Oh I got plans tonight
You can maybe join later on if you want
Idk how many we are running with this session
surely i can get in on this/
you want to join
come my son
Hello, just wondering if you need to do voicecalls and stuff for dnd sessions here? Since I'm not really comfortable will calls and stuff, and where can I find the cool roles you guys have? Sorry, checked channel navi and can't find where you can get the roles, if you can get it, or there needs to be a requirement or something, I'm really new to this stuff.
Do you see something at the top called Channels & Roles?
All I see is channel guide, sorry
Games are not hosted here. If you prefer voiceless games, your best bet is to look into Play By Post games.
Also, you don't have to use voice to play but that is the most common method. As Zero said, Play By Post games are the text only ones
If you don't mind, what are those? Play by post games I mean.
And where can I find those?
They are games in which a session is played on a forum or discord thread. In which the GM posts an enviroment and players make a post of what their characters do.
Oh, I see! Thank you, that's exactly what might fit me, if it's not a bother, can you tell me where I can find those?
There's not really a specific place to find those types of games as far as I know. You just have to check for that in the details when looking through all listed games
dms will post ads basically looking for people to join a campaign
Yeah its all random
Thank you! I really appreciate all the help and the answers
Be ready tho text based ones are semi rare from what I have seen
You can find several play by post games on dndbeyond's forum page: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post
There are also discord servers that host play by post games.
I've always wanted to try DnD for a while now, but my friends aren't really into it nor do I know anybody that was willing to let me in sessions
Aw yikes, but much gratitude, I'll keep an eye out if there's one, do you guys have any tips or a character sheet where I can make one? I'd love to do research first before diving into sessions, but I don't know where to start
dnd beyond
Thank you!
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
What do you mean research?
Free basic rules are a good place to start
I also recommend looking for games at your local game shop.
Like how the general sessions work, I'd love to know the basic mechanics so I avoid hindering everyone
Not yet, but thank you, I'll check that out
Highly suggest you read the basic rules
Sadly there aren't any here, I live by the province
for character sheets, you can make a character on dndbeyond.
Like, watch? Is that okay? I'd love to see and learn how it works
We are doing theater of mind
Thank you! I'll check it out
You can watch streams and videos on youtube as well.
I won't have to talk, right? Since I'll just be watching as an audience, if that's okay with you, thank you so much
I learned alot of DnD passively by watching different DnD series on YouTube
yea all good
I have watched a few, so I got uh, the general gist of it, I think?
Still you should read the first few chapters of the free basic rules.
I will, thank you!
Are the following statistics typical or below average?
Warlock level 3: AC 12 | HP 29
Barbarian Level 3: AC 13 | HP 57
Ranger Level 3: AC 13 (light- armored) | HP: 37
All of those are drastically low AC
Thought so…
What are the ability scores?
Give me a second to check
As for the hp they seem abnormally high
Absurdly low
Ranger has medium armor prof
AC is calculated with Dex right?
Depends on armour
Unarmoured = 10+Dex mod
Light armour = armour + Dex mod
Medium armour = armour + Dex mod (max +2)
The barbarian specifically had a feature called unarmored defense
It is AC = dex + con
A shield is +2 to any of those
Warlock:
Dex 13
Con 15
Ranger:
Dex 14
Con 14
Barbarian
Dex 12
Con 14
You going for a strength based ranger?
Extra info:
Warlock (fiend pact of the blade)
Ranger (Monster slayer)
Barbarian (berserker)
For the warlock I would recommend using light armour, and also making it 14 con/14 Dex
For the barbarian and rangers I would recommend medium armour
Also did you roll that hp?
My Ranger player put
Str 12
Dex 14
Con 14
In 12
Wis 14
Char 12
That’s… not good
Way too balanced stat spread
You should always have at least one dump stat, and your primary stat (either Dex or Str on a ranger, typically Dex) should be at least 16 to start with
Stat priority for Dex rangers should be Dex > Wis > con, then whatever
For Str, it should be str > Wis > con > Dex, then whatever
A good stat spread on a ranger will be pretty evenly spread between 8 and 16-17
I was working with them on doing a point buy stat system, guess somewhere around there something got mixed 😅
Doesnt a ranger start with scale mail, which would be 14+DEX = 16Ac
Why are they wearing light armor
They can start with either Scale or Leather
They read “offers some protection without sacrificing mobility” 😶
Dont just read the description, read the stats
Ranger is giving away AC for no reason, it gets better AC for free with its starting equipment
Light armour and medium armour have no difference in mobility
Heavy armour normally won’t as well
It’s fine, it seems like it’s following the rules properly, it’s just not well built if that makes sense
Everyone has to learn somewhere, and it’s not like the game tells you what a good stat allocation looks like, beyond “make these two high”
And it doesn’t even say what high is
Sorry if I came off a bit harshly btw
Imma send the other two stats:
Warlock:
Str 8 | Dex 13 | Con 15 | Int 13 | Wis 12 | Char 17
Barbarian:
Str 16 | Dex 12 | Con 14 | int 14 | Wis 11 | Char 10
Ranger:
Str 12 | Dex 14 | Con 14 | Int 12 | Wis 14 | Char 12
Warlock seems pretty good, I would personally swap con and Dex, but it doesn’t make a massive difference either way
Barbarian isn’t too bad either, 14 Dex and 16 con would be preferable, but it’s okay as is
We’re all new, I’m a new DM and their new players. Trying make sure the math I was helping them with was right.
I read somewhere the armor was 11 + Dex, and they said they wanted light armor-
(This includes the armour warlock starts with btw)
The math all seems right
Would this be rightly calculated?
Warlock AC: 13
Ranger AC: 16
Barbarian AC: 15
With what armour?
Warlock: Leather
Ranger: Scale
Barbarian: Scale
Ranger and barbarian sound right, is the warlock ac after switching the con and Dex around?
No
I believe it should be 12 then? 11+ a Dex mod of 1
Right right 😂
One more question, and idk whether to find it in the PHB or the DMG, how can you tell if a weapon you use would be a proficient weapon or a weapon without proficiency?
In the class descriptions
So if it says martial, any martial weapon is automatically proficient?
Yes
I did that right! Thank you!
There is a chart with all the armors and their stats
I was focusing on standard starting armor, since the list of armors and their stats was a tad bit confusing on what to give them 😅
I wouldn't say I'm new but I just never played a game and if some one is looking for a member for there group then im open to that
Hii I'm new, of course. But I won't mind trying new things. 😊

Both are linked above.
Check out #find-a-game to look for games.
There are no games hosted on this server.
it gave me one server and one only this is the new comer server so i thought i would try that out but thx
i saw i looked didnt help just saying i thought i could try here but i guess not its fine
but thank you
Try what here?
Each class will say what starting equipment is available to them
Wait what
Did you look in #looking-for-players ?
yes
dnd isnt a video game where you just drop in random games on a moments notice…
Check out iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online:

Don’t forget it’s Xmas soon people will be taking a break over the holiday period
Yup, my campaign paused for the Christmas break until the new year.
and we cant chat in the chanel you recommended so we dont know who needs a group and not all of us have servers
of our own
The Looking-For-X channels can be confusing, but you need to read the #find-a-game instructions carefully on how to use them, because there should be multiple threads in each channel that you can reply to, but you can only post once in looking for dm/player so on, to make your own thread, and you have to follow the instructions to be able to.
just tried it its showing me the same exact guy
neveermunud figured it out finally
never mind😆
Hello.
howdy!
Hi
I'm tempted to say screw it and join a party on my own since my group flaked on me
Yeah I'm saying screw it
that sucks 😭
I really wanna play forgotten realms campaign but i have only ever played once lol
Hey there, I've heard and just watched dnd streams but when I got to play my first game with like a pro-DM I just got that hit of euphoria that got me hooked onto it lol
hello there i'm new i watched some dnd videos and shorts on youtube i'd like to play dnd if anyone is down to take me in their party
If you're ready to find a group to play with, please read carefully #find-a-game as it has useful info on finding a game and it has important instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
alrighty i'll take a look real quick
What's the worry?
-not being able to commit
-being a bad player/person
-no character but does have an idea
-no experience in terms of actual dnd but do know the premise
- If you can't commit, look for one-shots
- Not sure what being a "bad person" means, but as long as you're trying to make the game fun for everyone, you'll be a good player
- It's often best to not make a character until after you've joined a game
- A lot of games are newcomer friendly
- do one-shot adventures
- don't actively try to be a jerk, take it slow and learn
- #character-discussion
- everyone starts somewhere
- come play!
Jinx.
Interesting
So join a game first before making a character in case the DM has specifications and homebrew and stuff?
Yes, but building a sample character first is good practice to learn about the system. Come over to the character channel, we'll kick the tyres on this idea and see what can be done.
Understood
I'm just doing a character on DnDBeyond, a wood elf fighter, can they have spells? Elves are inherently magical, right? Does being a fighter mean I don't have spells? I can't find anywhere to add or view them.
No wood elves don’t get spells
Have you read through the elf options
You get spells if something says you get spells.
Fighter doesn't get spells, Wood Elf doesn't get spells.
Xanathar's Guide to Everything has Wood Elf Magic, a feat for wood elves to get some magic
the Eldritch Knight subclass for Fighter gives a Fighter spells
Some races have an inherent spell feature. Mostly you get it from class, or feats.
I read through most info on the character creation pages on DnDB, is there another place you were thinking of?
Nope all the info is on dndbeyond
(Is high elf in basic rules?)
Sorry to be so dumb, but where would it be stated on the DnDB character creation specifically? For future reference
When making a character:
Wood Elf Magic would be a Feat, from XGtE, so you need to own Xanathar's Guide to Everything, and reach 4th level to get the Ability Score Improvement feature, and be allowed to take a feat instead of that feature.
Eldritch Knight is a subclass from the Player's Handbook, chosen at 3rd level
Yes
Under the description. So it goes:
"...They often have hair of silver-white, black, or blue, but various shades of blond, brown, and red are not uncommon. Their eyes are blue or green and flecked with gold.
...
Cantrip
You know one cantrip of your choice from the wizard spell list. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for it."
for High Elf
Yes.
Hey everyone! I'm new here and planning on playing D&D with friends, but none of us have played it before so was wondering if anyone would help teach me how to play. Been trying to research but just kinda get lost lol. Thanks! Feel free to DM me
hey not really new just havent played in a long long time and just got a sudden urch to make a D&D character for fun and had 2 questions 1 can anyone tell me more about yuan-ti and 2 is there a webside out there where we can design what our D&D character would look like or will i have to find stuff to make them in the sims?
Heroforge
is that for character creating or?
You can make little minis of your character on there
oh epic thanks
Then show them of in #dnd-heroforge-etc
Hi; im new here, i barely knew things about dnd and i wanted to try, but i don't really get or understand how it works exaclty, if somebody could explain it to me i would be grateful, thx 😅

Hello, i'm new to D&D i have some knowledge but its very basic, just looking to play to learn about the game more and gain experience when it come to D&D
does heroforge have every race or only a few?
it has so many
cause i searched one up and it didint show up when i searched it
What race
because it filtered to what you searched
it's also probably by a different name if it's one of the shmorgasbord of them
yuan-ti
This would be more suitable to #third-party rather than this channel
oh sorry
s'all good
im trying to run the wild sheep chase as my first dnd oneshot/session for friends who are also new players, what are the biggest things i should be working on?
anyone have any tips on naming D&D characters
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Is it your birth name? A nickname? The name given to you by your tribe at the Age of Ascension? Practical? Florid? Fanciful? Symbolic? Hereditary?
wdym?
When you're picking a name for your character, think about what it means.
Anyway, there are plenty of random generators out there. Just Google elf name generator or whichever, and you're away.
They're asking for relevant context for how your character might be named
If you are the child of Dorax and Mesotan, and your siblings are Thoris, Porquen, and Sareen, calling your character Geoff wouldn't really work
oh so sorry that makes more sense
For me, I either use Fantasy Name Generator or just pick a 'sound' (Like with those names above)
Mani, the half orc gladiator, is a simple guy. Simple name.
so would it be easier to come up with a backstory before coming up with the name?
Could be maybe something in your backstory give you inspiration for a name
i see
Lady Reylana Ilphelkiir nee De Vor is a much more complicated person, with a noble heritage. Her family traditions are matriarchal but she honours her grandfather De Vor also.
i don´t really know about especifically naming d&d characters, but you can search both name generators or baby name pages for your character names (in the case of lastnames you search the type of lastname you would want and just choose)
Thanks for the help guys
ur welcome
do people ever make spotify playlist for their D&D characters?
and could the backstory just be the reason they are in the campaign?
People do all sorts of things to help with creating a PC anything to give you inspiration
Thanks
hey im using D&D beyond and it doesnt show the race ive chosen what should i do
Do you mean the race you want to use isn't available for you to select?
right yes sorry that makes more sense
no i dont
What race is it that you want to use?
yuan-ti
Yeah, that's not a free race, you need to buy it from Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
i see and if i couldnt buy it could i just use a different race for now or?
If you can't buy it, and your DM doesn't own it (DMs can share content if you're part of their game on some platforms, including Beyond I believe), then it's best to pick from one of the free options.
For first time characters made before joining a game, the free ones are the best options honestly. Yuan-ti might not be allowed in all games, where as the Basic rules options are allowed in most games.
i see thanks
Individual races and classes are 1.99 if you go to the webpage marketplace
i see thanks
ok so my brother's sub-class is warlock-hexblade I wanna see if it is a good sub-class
i looked at the marketplace webpage and couldnt find the spot for just the different races
How do I play DnD?
Click on the book with the race you want and scroll down you should see other options
thanks

The bot post above has some very helpful links for getting started
can i ask what the difference between each yuan-ti is?
Are you referring to the Yuan-ti and the Yuan-ti pure blood?
theres a few different ones theres like 5
not sure where you're seeing that. You might be looking at a homebrew page.
should i send a screenshot?
There are 2 official the Volos legacy and the new version
i see
I don’t think you’ll be able to send a screenshot here. Perhaps you’re looking at the monster stat blocks?
im looking at this book Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
There is only one playable Yuan-ti as a race in there. the rest are stat blocks for NPCs.
that makes sense
Play what you think is fun, there’s no need to to worry about how “good” something is when you’re just starting
The one on page 36 is the playable yuan-ti. The ones on page 272+ are the 'monster stat blocks'
idk what he thinks is fun
oky so i dont have the book but someone suggested i just biy the one i want from the book so im assuming the yuan-ti i want is Yuan-ti Anathema
Nope, that'd be a statblock
So, let him decide
The playable one is just Yuan-ti
he just said any class but i heard a ton of critisism on hexblade
could someone help me with this? itd be much appreciated
it doesnt show that one in the list does that mean its in a different book?
I don’t know what you’re asking anymore
If he wants to he a hexblade warlock he can do that
You might be looking under the wrong category. It's in MpMM
im just looking at the ones that cost $1.99
no I wanna pick an actually good class not one with a TON of critisism
The playable race is in Monsters of the Multiverse as well, but its going to be in a different section. It looks like you are looking at the monsters specifically
my bad i didint scroll down far enoough
Go to the bottom of this and search 'races' (not 'monsters') under 'Additional purchase options'
Me and 2 other friends are looking to get into dnd, what would be the best way to start?
found it thanks guys
Ignore criticism, some people like certain classes others don’t you won’t know until you try them
A new player does not need to worry about power levels or “criticism”, those are irrelevant. The point is to get into a game and have fun
something was said before and now im curious is there nay particular reason dm's wont let you play as a yuan-ti

If you’re asking whats easier for a new player thats a different question
Each DM’s campaign setting is different
oky so would you say a yuan-ti is good for someone who used to play a one shot once a year and hasnt played in a while or?
my biggest concern is that we are on level 1 and he is too strong for level 1
The basic rules are free and can help get you started (the above also has video guides). If you've got three people together, you could try to have someone DM, and have two players + some sidekicks (The game is balanced around 4 players). You could get the starter kit, but to try it out you could also run Peril in Pinebrook which is a very easy, tutorial 'one shot' (should only last one session) that helps teach both the DM and the players the rules as they play.
There is nothing that is “too strong” at level 1 and you seem to be inventing concerns
If you have made a character by the rules, you're fine.
Stop making excuses and just play the game
no I have to wait like a month for us to get united and play
ok then this all seems moot
would you say a yuan-ti is good for someone who used to play a one shot once a year and hasnt played in a while or?
More a question for your DM, I'm afraid.
From what I remember, warlocks do get their pact at level 1. But you could always just ask to read the subclass?
thanks
I'd avoid getting too 'married' to a race/ character concept before talking to the DM of the game you want to join, as they might not allow Yuan-ti or perhaps there might be better options that fit the setting and campaign idea.
Yes hexblade can be strong but a lvl 1 warlock is still a lvl 1 warlock with 1 spell slot https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/114998416/F3Wqqr
You don’t get good weapons or armour for warlock at lvl 1
I see, thank you
That’s a really broad question. If you’re giving them pre-made characters, review the parts of a character sheet, combat, and ability scores/checks (so chapters 7 and 9 in the Basic Rules). Set expectations with a session zero. You could get more feedback in #dm-discussion.
what do yall rec for someone whos never play dnd before? :)

thanks heaps
I have watch some, but i havent play before
You should probably read the rules if you haven’t yet. Then you can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to hopefully link up with a group.
Question how much does animal handling help in taming wild animals
That's going to be very
. But presumably easier with it than without it
Would it help in taming a wild bear
What is the end goal with taming animals?
Is for roleplay, combat, or something else entirely?
That's going to be up to your DM
So a mount?
Yeah
There is no “taming an animal” mechanic
“animal handling” is askill in the game your character can be proficient in; the context for it is used is entirely DM dependent
As others have mentioned, this will be up for the DM.
Though there are some rules as written options you can pursue. You can become a Beast Master Ranger (The Tashas version), Battlesmith Artificer, or you can buy a riding horse and flavor it as such.
Typically when it comes to taming animals to be pets, companions, or mounts. The intent and endgoal behind taming animals will affect what decisions I make as a DM because it can affect the action economy, difficulty, and balance of the game.
There are subclasses that have various pets
Remember a wild animal (Beast) is still a wild animal regardless of how high you roll for your Animal Handling check. It's like thinking rolling a Nat20 Persuasion check is mind control and you can talk a merchant to give away their stuff for free.
If you're simply looking for a mount, you can potentially buy a riding horse and flavor it as a bear. Like I said, the intent behind having pets can affect how I would rule it.
Though if you want animal companions, the easiest approach without having to worry about class choice is to get the Magic Item called the Bag of Tricks which can be quite fun.
so i have a question whats going on with wizards of the coast i9s that going to effect the game any
This is a good point to remember
“Animal handling” doesnt mean you miraculously control animals
Probaby better to ask in #dnd-discussion than here. This channel is to help out new players to D&D.
What’s an i9
ok my bad i am new lol
no worries, we were all new when we started.
A new book literally came out today..so unless you are making allusion to a specific article or event I don't see reason to worry
A book came out today? I clearly haven't been paying attention
But regardless, I wouldn't worry either. If you've got the books, you can always just keep playing with them regardless. Who's going to stop you? 😁
Anyone have a group that’s open right now?
have you popped by #looking-for-players ? that would be the best spot
is there anyone who is experienced and is wiling to get in a call whit me and explain how caracter creation work send me a friend reqest and we can talk later in a apoited time i am curently busy
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPjdPog_vKX1vnjf68Sx2jcq1OtVUSA2i&si=32ANvDAtOixn1QEN video guide on how to build on the app
For finding a group you have a few options.
- In this server you have #find-a-game , which list instructions on how to find a game.
- You can also look for groups in dndbeyond's forum looking for group.
- Visit your local game shop.
- Look into dnd adventurers league, which you can ask about in #adventurers-league
thx
im wondering if anyone has an open slot for a non 18+ player trying to learn the game. I've looked at the #looking-for-players channel but haven't seen anyone looking for a person that matches that too well.
If you'd like to try advertising yourself, you can make a post in #750812887697588356
Read through #find-a-game for instructions on how
The looking for channels are your best best. You can make a post of your own in #750812887697588356
but read carefully the information in #find-a-game because it explains how to use the bot commands to make a post in those channels
How are these dnd games played? Do I need an app or a game board? Or is everything done virtually through text?
It depends on the DM if they're playing in person or online.

I see. I think. Lol.
Playing online is quite common these days, especially during/after the pandemic.
Dnd is fundamentaly a group if of people talking to each other. It can be in person, video, or text
hey everyone, I need some help with a character sheet, because I never made one involving multiclassing, the couple of times I played
and I want to make the sheet from scratch instead of using dnd beyond like usual
would anyone be willing to help me?
What are the classes and level?
It's a level 3 bard level 3 rogue, college of eloquence and arcane trickster
Which class was the first one taken?
the bard !
So your ability scores minimum are: 13 Dex and 13 Cha
and your rogue class gives you proficiency in Light armor, one skill from the class's skill list, thieves' tools.
but how do I work out the spells, I assume the spell slots don't stack since I'm not using the warlock class
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Spellcasting
Spell Slots. You determine your available spell slots by adding together all your levels in the bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, and wizard classes, and half your levels (rounded down) in the paladin and ranger classes. Use this total to determine your spell slots by consulting the Multiclass Spellcaster table.
oh yeah, makes sense
Arcane trickster would be considered a "third caster" (ranger and paladins are "half casters").
oh yeah that was my next question
thank you !
oh just to check, my skills stay the same proficiency wise but I add my proficiency bonus to a skill of my choice from the rogue skillset right?
It’s actually 1/3.
Your proficiency bonus is based on your character level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#ProficiencyBonus
Your proficiency bonus is always based on your total character level, not your level in a particular class. For example, if you are a fighter 3/rogue 2, you have the proficiency bonus of a 5th-level character, which is +3
This line from the PHB is missing from the Basic Rules quote above.
and a third of your fighter or rogue levels (rounded down) if you have the Eldritch Knight or the Arcane Trickster feature.
Probably because those subclasses don’t appear in the Basic Rules.
thank you !
Hi, I'm new to discord but not dnd I've actually been playing (mostly dming) roughly 5 or 6 years
Welcome!
ranger and paladin are half
Sorry, I had half but corrected for the arcane trickster. Fixed it again!
Howdy y’all! I’m not completely new, I participated in a campaign my freshman year of college (6 years ago) and haven’t played since. I recently started watching the Witcher series on Netflix and it sparked something in me to give D&D another go. I’m looking for a light hearted group that doesn’t mind taking the odd side quest and fooling around— I want to drink lots of mead and I want a pet wolf. I’m currently visiting family but I’ll be back home on January 6th so I can start anytime after that. Thanks and happy holidays!
Welcome! If you’re looking for a game to join, #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
hey, im new, to the server, and dnd in general, me and my group are finishing a campaign tomorrow, and we have a couple planned campaigns to do after. But i wanted to share what i wanted to do for my own possible campaign, to make sure its not defying any rules
is anyone available to help me out on this?
Not sure what you’re asking…?
i want to write my own campaign, and as i am new, idk if what i want to do for my campaign won't work.
So you’re the Dm?
no, but in different campaigns in our group we want to switch, so we all got to experience being a dm
Alright now im confused
You want to design a campaign, but you’re not the DM?
Think he means when its his turn to dm he wants a campaign that he made ready
that sounds right
Got any ideas?
That should be #dm-discussion
Hi
I would like to get started into DND, but well, I've never played it and there are a lot of things I dont know yet
The pinned messages should help with that
I've played DND before. I'm just looking for the new d. M.
ill move to dm then
ill check
as a non-native english speaker, I think a DND campaign would be a nice way of practicing my listening and pronunciation
Also max what exactly do you mean by find a new dm?
Yoooo Wus up y’all
@acoustic reef thats probably the coolest reason for starting to play dnd
Sup
thanks!
My dm deleted his Discord.
I'm pretty advanced in my english already but I have some pronunciation issues
Oh.
btw, I have some questions about the game
How in the world do I find people to play dnd with (I’ve never actually played before)
there's no need to purchase anything to play right? If I want to play thru a voice-call or smth I mean
Well, go to #looking-for-players if you want a new group to play with
you too @lyric fjord
@acoustic reef yea that's awesome, I'm trying to learn Spanish, but the class is really difficult.
I didn’t know that was there mb lol
lets move this to the off-topic chat
Yeah, there's a lot of stuff that's free and you don't need to buy anything to play
@mint jolt fair enough lol
thats awesome
I'll go to read the rules and information I need
Cool
learning all the rules and things needed to properly play will take me around a week right?
I don't really know, I learned through playing
Oh yeah
try looking on #looking-for-players and try finding games that say they are beginner friendly
so I can start playing right ahead and learn along the way?
If someone’s new to dnd, what’s y’all’s first suggestion on what to do? I just picked my class of being a rouge now what should be the next step?
Welcome! So the only thing you've done so far is decided you want to play a rogue?
The first few chapters of the Basic Rules walk you through the process of creating a character, so that'd be my recommendation. They're linked in the pinned messages of the channel, as well as some handy videos. Reading through those as well as the chapters on ability scores (7) and combat (9) should be helpful.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
New players can start with those
Thank ya thank ya
I really wouldn’t recommend it
i am a newcomer i finally caved
Welcome 👋😀
Rogue is so useful and so fun. You can scout, recon, talk your way in/out, haggle, steal, plant items on people, stab, shoot, even cast a spell or two.
What do you want to do with you character?
hi
Assassin and thief are fun traditional rogues. Soulknife and Arcane Trickster are odd and magical and different.
Hi I’m looking for a dnd beyond campaign to play
Rogues can be snipers, run'n'gun archers, trap setters, or melee fighters, even grapplers!
#find-a-game has some instructions you can use to find a GM and players.
Since yours is dnd beyond focused the website does have a forum to help you find a game as well.
The dyno bot post just above has some things to help you get started.
this
Ok I put up a thing looking for A dm
I also recommend checking out postings by DMs looking for players.
Ok
lol im stuck in this trap i clicked the first thing i saw and im already getting sucked into this weird choose your own adventure story
Here is the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Start with that and ask any questions that come up.
ok sounds good ha
If you prefer a visual medium the handbooker helper series is a good start as well.
I’m not fully sure yet, but those all do sound interesting
Good day everyone. Is there a link to generate random characters?
Npcs or PCs?
If you mean npcs you can just use a name generator and the commoner stat block
More a PC generator
NPCs as you said, are more just a name and maybe a class.
Pretty sure you can randomize a character on Beyond's character creator
Ohh. I'll check that
Thank you !
@lyric fjord Basic rules can be found on DND beyond.
As a player, all you need to know is YOUR section of the rules; your class details. Thankfully, the character sheet heavily summarizes these rules.
I have no clue how DnD works but i am very intrigued and want to learn. Where does one even begin
this server should have vcs for people to play
Check the basic rules, they’re linked in the pinned messages of this channel
We don’t play on this server. There aren’t any VCs bc they’re too hard to moderate.
Ill check that out now thanks.
Basic rules are FREE on DND Beyond, and they contain base class info as well as a single subclass to get started.
thats a shame. know any DnD servers that have voice channels?
Look at the number of people on this server...
Where do i create my character. Or is that something i just write on paper for example. Sorry if these are stupid questions i seriously have no clue how this works😂
You can do that, or make it using dnd beyond's character creator
or any other one
dnd beyond?
Tysm! <3
Fillable Character Sheets PDFs

Got it
How come Artificer doesn't show up on DND Beyond?
In a nutshell, everything in DND requires ability checks (your skills); saving throws (outlasting a harmful effect); or attack rolls (bonking).
Everything is determined by a 20-sided dice, then the rules tell you when you use every other dice as needed.
Ah dang, that's a Tasha's Cauldron of Everything class.
Because it's not a free class in the Basic Rules. It's part of Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Oh-
I understand (maybe not every) but moves are rolled on a dice that decides how effective they are. 20 being complete success, 1 being astounding failure
No, that's incorrect.
Natural 20s are only automatic success for attack rolls.
Natural 1s are only automatic failures for attack rolls.
Saving throws and ability skill checks are based on the d20 plus Proficiency Bonus plus appropriate modifier. There's no automatic success or failure with them.
I'm just going to switch to Paladin because my brother says they are one of the classes with rizz.
Bard mains in shambles
Paladins are half-casters! Melee fighters with divine powers.
They are divine warriors upholding virtuous oaths.
They don't have very complex spells. They primarily focused improving your choice of bonking with bonk stick, protecting allies or improving social encounters.
All those spells gets pushed to the wayside with Paladin's main ability, Divine Smite. Spend a spell slot to do extra damage. EZ. :3
What’s the largest character you can make?
Medium
i feel like dnd is so complex, how do people remember everything that going on?
You reference the rules
My brother plays Homebrew and their campaign made up a spell called, "The Wave of Rizz." I don't understand a thing.
The OG people have every DnD book sitting next to them
Not all but a lot
My brother bought all the DnD books off of Amazon. :')
no but like imagine having like 4 items in your bag or something (idk how this stuff works) and having a special type of armor, and having this and that and thats just for ONE character, how is everything all remembered
I’m honestly trying to find as many online as I can before I buy one. Being broke and all that lol
I'm poor so I got my brother artist clay for Christmas so he can make his own DnD figurines. :D
Define ‘medium’. Height-wise.
Just like all things, DND isn't just memorizing; it's applying the rules.
Notes are important! And if the notes don't work, the book is available to help you.
Player characters (PCs) can be either Small or Medium size. Their racial descriptions often describe how tall they are. Their height and weight doesn't have any real effects on gameplay mechanics.
are there servers where you can play in vcs, is that even possible
Yes, just not here.
DMs would have their own private Discord servers for their own games.
The vague-ness is unsettling. lol
Read the playable race descriptions.
Handwaving it:
- Medium is roughly like 4' - 6'.
- Small is roughly 2' - 4'.
Thank you for the clarification
Everything varies, just think average human height for medium-sized humanoids.
Half that size for small humanoids.
Goliaths can be 7' to 8' tall.
Hello
You don't memorize it. You write it down on your sheet and then look at that for the most part
Or if you're me, write it down on your sheet and then forget about it half the time anyway
@pulsar skiff In a nutshell, long as it's below 9' to 10', it's medium.
Hallo.
8' seems to be the upper limit for Medium size. It's not hardcoded.
You're not going to have an 8' tall halfling, gnome, or dwarf though.
So I just picked up the essentials kit to get started I’m very new to the game. I think I’ve only played an adventure once at my local game store but I really wanted to play with my kids and wife I guess I was just kind of wondering is it best just to run through both the rules and the entire DM book just seems overwhelming
Where is there anyway to start off small as far as maybe just building characters and making a small campaign for me and my kids to play to kind of ease them into it or is the essentials kit about as easy as it gets
The players do not need to run through the DM guide
they do need to run thru the basic rules in some form
The essentials kit is fairly small. If you want something even shorter, you could look for a free oneshot adventure on DMsGuild
Oh yeah that is DMs eyes only
And honestly, I don't think you need to read the entire DMG to DM. I've only done it once, way after I started
The Running the Game chapter has some useful stuff, but otherwise you can kinda read it as you need it
And your players really only need to learn the class they're actually playing to start, not all of them
Ok cool also this may be a stupid question, but how does movement work in this game? I saw that a lot of characters have their foot speed, but how does that relate to the map?
If you use a map with a grid, it's usually assumed 5 feet per square
Unless it says otherwise
I think they talk about grids more in either the PHB or DMG, but that's the core of it
Feel free to assume diagonals are also 5 ft unless you really care about Euclidean geometry
Ok awesome thank you
Here's the neat part about TTRPGs, theatre of the mind actually works.
Hi
helloo
Hallooo!

You need to like dm people I think ;w;
#find-a-game hs instructions on how to go about looking for a group
You either post your own add in #750812887697588356 or respond in the thread under each add your interested in in #looking-for-players
hiii i was kinda wondering how to actually make a D&D character cause i really want to get into playing but i'm not sure where to start...!
Hi, from what I read a wizard's spells know is determined by their level + their intelligence modifier, so from what I understand a level 3 wizard with an intelligence of 18 knows 7 spells?
Take a lookat https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard#TheWizardTable
ok thankyou
they can prepare 7 spells*
A wizard starts with 6 spells in their book at lvl 1 and learns 2 every lvl
spells "known" is kinda... odd when it comes to wizard
ooohh
Yeah - wizards can write down all sorts of spells in their book but can only have so many prepared and have so many spell slots to use them.
so they know a certain amount but evey long rest prepare the ones they select
since there is
The Wizard Spell List (that you add into your Book)
Your Wizard's Spellbook (or suitable cosmetic reflavoring, which contains spells you can Prepare from, and you can ritual cast from as a Wizard)
Your Prepared Spells (that you can cast with your slots)
For example, with a book full of killy spells and general housekeeping spells, they would prepare the killing ones for going to a fight or venture the wilds, or the housekeeping for days off in the city and cleaning a residence
So a level 3 wizard with an intelligence of 18 can prepare 7 spells from the known 14 spells?
Oh wait ye thankyou!
but yes, you add 2 new spells to your book each level, of a level for which you've reached the slot level of in the wizard table (so for example, when you reach level 3, the 2 spells you add to the book can be 1st or 2nd level, since you've just unlocked 2nd level spell slots)
thank you!
is it just me or are there so many large terms when making a character
i think it's just me 😭
What do you mean by large terms?
i'm not quite sure of what some of the things the website is asking me are-! the lore must be quite vast too;;;
what things though
Lore is largely irrelevant to learning the game
You can disregard that for now
As for terms, generally they're explained either where you're asked to reference them or you can find them in the content page
ahh alright alright then
ahh thank you thank you!
how do i know what languages to choose when it asks under background? ( •︠ˍ•︡ )
Okay, so when it comes to making a character, there's a lot of stuff that will depend on your setting
And your setting will depend on your DM
These things include language, faith, details of your background etc
You can generally ignore those things if you're just making a character to figure out how things work
ahh thank you!
Itching to play
aren't we all
I need a sensei dm
Please use the appropriate channels to find a group/game - otherwise it becomes off-topic and then you make us poor mods work and have to clean things up 😉
Hey folks, want to try to get into DnD proper and wanted to ask which one of the rule/general books are considered "core"/"must have" beyond 3 from the starter set (PH, MM and DG).
If you are a player, the best books to pick up are Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, and Monsters of the Multiverse
Are those recommended for DMs as well or are they mostly relevant for players only?
That's for players
The first two books on that list are amazing for DMs as well, if only to provide more options for your players
And the third has a bunch of monsters for DMs to use, too.
Which ones are more focused for DMs?
I am guessing all 3 are useful for anyone to some degree but which ones are DMs specific?
They are not DM specific is what many of us are saying
Ah alright
Honestly, those 3 are still the best generic pick ups for DMs as well. There are other books that might be better for specific settings, like if you want to run an adventure in Ravneca or Eberron, then you'll need the book for those. Glory of the Giants and Treasury of Dragons are also good books for DMs and Players, but they are very specific in what topics they cover. If you want to run an adventure themed around giants or dragons, they'd be great to have. Otherwise, they are still fun, but not necessary at all
Anything you would recommend above the rest for a newcomer who wants to get a foot in the door?
Player's Handbook
this is my roundabout way of saying I cannot afford all 3 at once
If you have the Players Handbook already then I'd maybe lean Tasha's
I'd say Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, personally
I have DMs Guide, Monster Manual and Player's Handbook so far.
Tasha's and Xanathar's are pretty even in the amount and quality of subclasses options they provide, but Tasha's also includes a large amount of optional rules to increase your customization options. Most of the community has adopted those optional rules, so having your own access to them will be good
Understood, I have seen it mentioned the least out of those 3 options but would Volo's Guide to Monsters also be a solid choice?
I am very much into the creatures/monster side of DnD
Volo's is out of print, and all the player races from there were revised and reprinted in Monsters of the Multiverse.
In fact, Monsters of the Multiverse is the single largest collection of player races in any book.
(Though it doesn't offer any player options outside of races.)
Volo's Guide to Monsters is considered to be "legacy" material. Pretty much everything in it was reprinted and updated
So beyond for collection purposes there is little reason to get it by this point then
Well, the one thing Volo's has that the new material doesn't is lore. Monsters of the Multiverse is written to be generic, so that everything in it can apply to any setting or game. Volo's Guide was written specifically for the Forgotten Realms setting, so they went very in depth about the lore of the different monsters in it. That lore was lost in the reprint
So some DMs still like to pick it up for inspiration about how to use the monsters, even if the actual stat blocks inside are out of date
Whether or not its worth the full price tag of a book just to get the lore snippets is up to you
Thank you very much for the in-depth answers!
Based on what I heard I think getting Tasha's Cauldron of Everything would make the most sense for me
Sounds great. Best of luck to you. Let us know if you have any more questions
Since I am here I might as well ask something that will become relevant in the future: Which one of the adventure books would be best suited for newer people?
Intro to Stormwreck Ilse is a free adventure that's meant to be a great jumping on point for people

Okay thank you
Dnd beyond is also offering some free adventures for the holidays.
One of them is spelljammer academy:
a 4 one shots that tell an overarching story that does a good job at teaching players different aspects of dnd.
you pinged the wrong person
Apologies 😅
no worries. @twin elbow See Zero's message above for more recommendations
Much appreciated!

Hi, I’m trying to look into becoming a dnd player however I’m a bit lost on what to look into/research. I know some odds and sods about some races but not sure what is needed in a campaign if I am ever able to find/join one. Any tips or ideas?

The bot post above has some excellent links to get you started, including the free basic rulebook
Is it better to multi class or main one class?
For a new player it's highly advised to stick with just one class
Multiclassing can be fun, but it's also considerably more complicated, and it's very easy to accidentally make a wonky build that feels sub-par
Also my rouge says ability score improvement 6 times each showing different levels, for example it says 12th level in 4 of those does that mean when I get to the 12 level I get 4 ability points? Or 8 because it says I could increase an ability by 2
Or do i only get the choice of plus 2 ability points on those’s specific levels? So would if I was level 12 would i instead get 3 pts instead of 2?
You get 6 lvls where you can take an ASI of 2 point
Ah ok thats interesting
Sorry it was 6 so at lvl 4, 8 10, 12, 16, and 19
As a rouge I chose to increase my stealth but as a half elf I chose to increase my stealth too, would that give me a bonus? Or do they just only count once
Yea
New here where do I go to try and find a game
Do persuasión and deception compliment each other? Or are they the same thing
There’s a #find-a-game I think
Your proficiency bonus can’t be added to a single die roll or other number more than once. For example, if two different rules say you can add your proficiency bonus to a Wisdom saving throw, you nevertheless add the bonus only once when you make the save.
Persuasion is good for convincing people to do what u want deception helps people believe your b.s
Aww that sucks, ima tweak my character then
Rouge and bard would do well with both
If u are on a homebrew your charecter is fine it depends if your dm will be cool with it
Home brew?
This is newcomers let’s stick to the basics and ignore homebrew
For my extra language what’s a good recommendation?
I was thinking celestial because it be cool but I read it wouldn’t be a high possibility of every being used
But at the moment I know elvish and common
Depends on the game your playing in
Am I able to change it on the fly? Or do I have to go to the editor each game?
You make a character for every game you play in
That’s cool
For my ability score should I go with standard array, point buy or manual?
Standard or point
https://youtu.be/vgXhB0YTS08?si=Ccxaka0w9-VIqsG4 video on how to make a rogue on dndbeyond
I’m new to trying to play online how do I find a group to play with…. It feels impossible lol
Does #750812887697588356 actually work?
Same
I didn’t see any comments or posts on the find game link
#find-a-game is just a list of instructions for how to use and make posts in our actual looking for games channels, like #750812887697588356 and #looking-for-players
I have an old homebrew campaign where my players are all dragon riders by birth and roll to see what kind of dragon they get based on their alignment and the dragons will magically age and scale as you lvl up. I have no clue if anyone would be interested in it or how to do anything online 🤦🏽♂️
If you'd like to advertise your game and find players, use the bot to make a post in #looking-for-players
then people will reach out to you if they are interested
I had a bunch of people that kept trying to get dragon eggs so I just made a game where they start out with it to get the experience
that sounds super cool
Lol it was fun but trying to find new people to play with is hard
well there’s a bunch here that would
i would at least. unless your looking for experienced people
And that’s why we have the looking for channels
So if you're looking for a group...
Do some one-shots. Experience play. Take notes of names.
Try to get those people you like playing with in another game. Send them a DM, nothing fancy, just "I had fun with you in the Welcome to Woodvale adventure, I've seen another one you might be interested in, here's the link."
You may strike out. That's okay! But you may find after a few of these, building your experience, you end up with a whole group.
Maybe even take a turn at running your own game? It's not that hard and there are plenty of very helpful people around here to lend you their advice.
What would you recommend for a total newcomer to d&d never played before and just looking to get started really 🤗 as in best things to buy/online games or would in person games be better.
Also howdy 🤗
You can start with the basic rules, which are free and linked here #dnd-newcomers message
That also has a Demo and some video links as well
As for in person/online, that tends to come down to preference and availabilty. I prefer in person games and would generally choose them first if given the choice, but you may not have people or a place to play locally
Other people prefer playing online regardless

I know it's probably in the handbook, but I really don't feel like reading it rn, but I need to ask. Can I pick whichever spells I want as a wizard, or do I have to keep it in a certain school of magic? Evocation, conjuration, etc. ?
You can choose any spells from the wizard spell list.
They don't have to be from any specific school, though certain wizard subclasses do give you benefits for using spells from a given school.
Honestly a relief. I didn't want to have to skim trough the handbook and figure out which spells belong to which school. My dnd knowledge is limited basically to Jocat, president ai videos, and a whole lot of memes. But I'm slowly working my way up. My roll for stats gave me wizard stats so that's what I'm doing
FWIW, stats aren't typically assigned in the order you roll.
Unless your DM has instructed you otherwise, you can assign those numbers in whichever order you like.
I know. I'm not looking for a game rn, just more or less practicing on how to actually fill out a character sheet properly. But if it works well, I'll probably save it
Hi
Hi
So what are you looking to do?
Hi
Idk I just wanted to say about the campaign I’m doing
can i join a campaign
Check #find-a-game
ok
Be warned that it may take you days to months to find a good table to join because there are waaaaaaaay more players than DMs.
Like has anything happened that's crazy in said campaign?
I got to be a general yesterday
I could tell you how I got to be general
Yeah in #tales-from-the-table
All good
Ye
Ok
I just bought my own set of dice, is this all I need to play dnd besides friends and a notebook, plus a PC?
Player Character
Pretty much.
Cool
I'm just having trouble since there is just one dnd group I found in Prague, where I am most of the time
my schedule just doesn't work out
Scheduling is the biggest obstacle to D&D games.
I can try doing solo first
D&D is a group collaborative game and not made for solo play.
Perhaps take a look for online groups?
Any suggestions for where to look?
Please read (carefully) #find-a-game
Hi guys, new to D&D but curious to find out more. been an Xbox gamer for years. Recently got introduced to Balders Gate 3 on friends ps5 (who is an avid D&Der) She said I should actually give real D&D a go. So here I am dipping the proverbial toe into the pond. Have already created a couple characters on D&D Beyond. My friend also said to look for some free games to try to ensure I like it before going nto the serious stuff.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet? BG3 isn't D&D but just a licensed game based on D&D.

Hey guys I have a question does the characters in dnd have a specific look or it is in our imaginantions
It's up to you how you think your character should look like.
races have some common attirbutes typically. But yeah you make up what the character looks like. Ik some people really like to draw a bunch of stuff. but for people like me without that skillset it makes more sense to just theater of mind it.
Great Thank you so much
Hi could I have some help?
My friends have told me about how fun dungeons and dragons is but I don’t fully understand the concept of the game
I thought I’d join to see what all the hype was about XD
Have you watched people playing D&D on Youtube or Twitch?
Not really I’m not allowed access to YouTube
Okay...
Parents are incredibly strict
So will they let you play D&D then?
They dunno what it is
Yeah this might unfortunately be something you need to have a discussion with your family then.
But at it's core, D&D is a collaborative storytelling role playing game.
One person takes the role of Dungeon Master and helps direct the story, decides what dice rolls are needed, and helps decide what rules are in effect and the impact of player choices and dice rolls.
The rest of the players play a character (Player Character or PC). They are like the main actors in the world.
The DM sets the scene, asks the players what their characters do, decides what dice rolls are needed, and then decides the impact of that.
Together, DM and players tell a story together.
There is one D&D campaign that's been running for close to 50 years.
But some games are only one game session of 1-4 hours or so.
That said D&D is a game of rules. If you do decide to play, you should familarize yourself with the rules on how to create the characters, combat, and magic.
Here's the link to the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
My current campaign has been going on for almost two years and will probably be another two or three years until it's finished.
Also check the pinned messages here in the channel for other useful resources for new-to-D&D folks to help them get started.
Ok read the rules
So how would I get into a game of it?
And would it just take place over a discord group chat?
Find a group of other folks that want to play - this can be in-person or online
Thanks
yeah a lot of people run the session over discord and use something like dnd beyond. OR just whatever tools the dm is comfertable with
So is it less imagination and more online game then?
Eh depends on the dm. I do mostly theater of the mind with sim mechanics in world
Read the rules. The more you are prepared the more like you will be accepted by a DM to their table.
Other games can go into full-on miniatures and 3d-terrain.
I read the rules
true I am a noob myself so if a player knew the rules better then me that whould be nice lol
Also, I'm going to assume you're a minor but some tables may not want minors at their table for various reasons. I only play with fellow adults and it would be awkward to have someone underaged at our table considering the subjects we talk about in and out of the game.
Im not a minor I just have incredibly Christian parents
My bad then.
Dw about it
I'd say don't play a cleric or warlock lmao
Don’t worry I won’t
Well, your parents may have issues with you playing D&D considering that during the mid 1980s there was the "Satanic Panic" where some parents accused D&D and its players of "devil worship"...
(I lived through that personally...)
Bro you've been playing dnd for like 40 years?
Honestly im an adult they don’t control my life
Yes, since 81 or 82.
That's cool.
Let's avoid any real-world religious chatter as per server rules
Sorry
No worries
Just reminding folks so I don't have to start deleting messages and actually working as a mod
D&D is a fun game. I've played all editions except OD&D. Each edition has its quirks...
So either way anyone up for a game? 😅
south I msg you
Check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
Nope, D&D isn't something you play at a drop of a hat.
Do mods have the gaurd stat block or are ya'll like a high cr monster?
More like another community member that somehow got an offer from Wizards of the Coast to help moderate their server by being a good community member. Also don't ask where to apply - it's more of a they reach out to you when they need another moderator.
gaurd stat block then lol (just joking)
I can’t tell if you guys are arguing or bonding XD
Kk
But I think we should end that topic now and get back to D&D
But feel free to ask any specific D&D question you have here or in an appropriate chanel (see id:browse to see all the many channels for specific D&D topics we have)
So, during a campaign, does your character gain experience and items that will carry over to future campaigns?
It depends. If it's a new campaign with the same DM, it might carry over. That's going to depend on the DM and what they're planning. But it's not common if you're going to a brand new table
The exception is games played under Adventurer's League rules since carrying your character across tables is one of the points of organized play
How does someone find a group to play with I'm a first time player I made a character on DnD beyond an I'm wanting to get into my first campaign but can't find anyone to play with?
Practically anywhere. DnDBeyond Forums, Roll20 Forums, Discord, etc. This same server should have channels #750812887697588356 is a good start. Or you can go to #looking-for-players .
Do know that some games might not take off and it could take some tries before you find a group that plays consistantly.
I'm just struggling to find a group that is open to completely new players that isint instantly filled
Is there a discord good for newbs?
There are a couple of avenues:
- You can follow the instruction in #find-a-game . This can point you to people that are looking for GMs and players.
- You can visit your local game shop as those often host games for people.
- If you are looking to ease your way into D&D, I also recommend trying out D&D Adventurers League as that allows you to commit to a single game session at a time, each being roughly 4 hours long.
Interesting this is just all kinda confusing I was hoping there would be like a completely online version of DND like settlers of Catan
Thank you!!!
Well D&D is more like cooperative storytelling with game mechanics. There are many games like Baldurs Gate 3 but it won't be a one to on experience as part of the fun of D&D is coming up with unique solutions to obstacles the DM presents the players.
In general discord is used for during session to hop on a group call. As it will either be played through theater of the mind, where players use their imagination, or a virtual table you have something to look at and interact with.
There are D&D video games like Baldur's Gate 3 but they're rather linear since they're locked in to what the game designers have designed and scripted. D&D is a collaborative storytelling between the DM and the players — it's very improv.
I’m sorry but I’m very much new to dnd, me and my friend are long distance and want to play together. Is this a place I can find people to play dnd with online? If so how do I even start with looking for a group to play with
Check #find-a-game
No, after a sesh is over you lose all items, experience, knowledge, you restart your campaign as if in a time loop, doomed to repeat everything all over again hundreds of times
If you want, I’m willing to take you in?
Yes please
Say less, I don’t think we can chat about it here sorry so if you wanna go to DMs or something (not sure if there’s a channel here for that)
Seems like there’s a lot of people here willing to try out dnd for the first time. I don’t like advertising my campaign here cuz I don’t think I’m allowed. Just know I pull up
You can advertise games here you just have to do it via #find-a-game and post in #looking-for-players
Perhaps mention that is sarcasm because some new players may take that literally.
Yea Ngl I should, forgot that new players are actually new😭
Everyone this is a JOKE, it 100% depends on the players and dm, discussing it with your fellow dm before, during and after a sesh can give you better insight as to how your future campaigns will play out. If you’re playing 1 campaign and swap over to an entirely new campaign, then usually you don’t bring along items/experience unless your dm says otherwise
Thank you
Its generally not acceptable to transfer characters between campaigns though, at least not in my experiece. Cat said session which is confusing but the question was about keeping a character across multiple campaigns.
When I look at find a game it only shows the rules and not anything from people ;-;
You have to read that channel for the instructions on using the looking channels
The looking channels are where the actual posts are, iirc
Hello, I'm very new to TTRPGs, in fact, only played one once, I want to get into D&D and DMing so I can play with my friends but I have no idea where to start, my only experience with the setting is Baldur's Gate III and the D&D movie with Chris Pine, I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer.
Hello I'm also new

If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Okay
Do you need help with the basics?
Did you make the character on dnd beyond? If so you can make it public and share a link to the character for other to view.
Yes
Feel free to post the link and I can take a look at it.
I'd really appreciate it!
@wild prawn @last quest Here is a Player's Quick Combat Guide that can make the mechanics easier to understand: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/214803/Players-Quick-Combat-Guide
If you prefer voice, I have some free time at the moment to jump on a call for bit.
Oh cool, thank you!
Thx
I'm mute sadly, but I don't mind listening!
No worries.
I also recommend looking at other free guides just below it for new players. You'll even find a guide on how to fill out a printed character sheet if you prefer to do things with pencil and paper.

cool
Making a tiefling for the first time and just wanted to ask exactly at what age a tiefling would be considered an adult (like a young adult age)! I was checking through a couple resources online and some of them say different things ;;
pretty much same as human, from my knowledge
Okay! So around 18-early 20s?
yeah
Awesome, thank you sm!
Can you use any race for a session or are some locked to a specific campaign?
Whatever the DM says is allowed.
Thank you, still trying to figure out the character development process thats helpful
If you're looking for practice creating characters, I would recommend making a character that is Adventurers League compatible.
Otherwise it's recommended to create a character based on the information the DM provides about the campaign.
Setting, Theme, Tone, Allowable sources, etc.
I haven't found a group yet, I'm using dnd beyond. Its been helpful but still have a lot to figure out. I started making an aasimar cleric and trying to determine starting equipment
Oh nice, starting equipment options should pop up after selecting it. Though don’t forget to pick a background first as those come with other starting equipment and starting gold.
Could I message you, showing you what I have and ask a few questions?
I’m about to turn in but feel free to post it in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on what you want to focus on
I'm looking for a group to join

Hi, me and my friend are very new to dnd how does one play a game here
We don’t play here, this in more a community space for discussion, there are game finding channels see #find-a-game
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Any questions about rules and stuff feel free to ask and the nerd collective will descend to help
Eagers awaits the summons to descend and be helpful
Hello , I am actually new to whole DnD game play and i wanted to know how to play it and if i can join any games for beginners/newbies/noobs? Thank you 🙂
First, how's your grasp of the rules? If you're completely fresh, check out the bot post above for helpful links.
Thank You ! ill do that.
Potentially an odd set of questions…
Is there an etiquette to rolling characters? Should I wait until our session zero, or can I roll it now while I build the character?
It's fine to build practice characters but be prepared to modify them to work in your group's game.
Just don't expect to take any rolled stats done in private into a game.
That’s fair, and I was planning on creating a few different characters anyway as my group haven’t discussed any of their characters, so I’m not even sure if mine will even be a good fit. Fingers crossed though!
Making character concepts is great fun if you stick to point buy or standard array for the stats and keep the backstory vague and simple you’ll find most DMs will be happy
Start small and the more you play the more you will understand and develop the character
I’m going to wait before I work on the backstory because I’m not even sure if this specific campaign takes place in the main setting of DnD. The DM said their last campaign was a D&D/Bloodborne setting.
Which I’m not against at all, I just don’t know what to expect!
Backstories just need 3 things were did you come from, how you got your skills/powers, why are you out adventuring if you dont give names to places then they are easy to fit into most settings
That was pretty succinct, thank you!
That’ll make creating a backstory much less daunting.
Yeah, "served under Barick Ulfrik in the Karad Civil War" is much less palatable than "served under a noble in a war"
as far as a DM reading a first draft off the bat
Oh and never let your backstory be more powerful than a lvl one character cause if you have high king grand admiral targus the 3rd, leader of the 7 armies of tegus and heir to the 8 orbs of power and they die to a goblin in session 1
That makes sense. Unless that was simply a really op goblin.
Hello all, I’m very new to the community. Hope you’re all having a good day. I’ve got the sort of concept down for things and dnd has always fascinated me but I’ve never played a table top game. What are some things a fellow newcomer should know? Thank you in advance

Hello
hello, my warlock wants to cast hex, does he have to roll to hit or is it automatic?
It’s auto apply to target
Hello I want to start playing D&D. How do I start?
Welcome! There’s some helpful links above to get you going.
But if you’ve got any specific questions, feel free to ask.
Sure thanks!
If a spell requires an attack roll or saving throw, it will say so. Hex does not, so it simply works
What links do I need to get started on dnd? (I have the handbook as well I just don't know which to start and where in the book I should start)

OK thanks
Does anyone have a campaign running for curse of strahd I can join on?
Take a look in our Looking For Game channels - see #find-a-game
Hey I'm new to dnd but the concept sounds fun and I want to get in to it but the dm I tried getting to play backed out an I was wondering if there is anyone able to help me get started
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Hey I’m still not well versed in 5e so uh, is this all true? https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Human#content
+1 to every ability hot diggity dang
Yep!
Keep in mind tho that due to odd scores not being very useful, and due to not every ability being equally useful, that it isn’t as broken as it sounds
My group of friends and I are all new to the DND world. Since it’s hard to find irl games where we live, I have decided to get the “Planescape: Adventures in the multiverse” set. None of us have ever ran/played a game before. I plan on being the DM for the Planescape adventure. How exactly does this set work? Are 2 of the books in the set just informative and the other one is the adventure?
“Sigil and the outlands” Is player character options and worldbuilding information. “Turn of fortune’s wheel” is the adventure itself. “Morte’s planar parade” has the statblocks for a bunch of creatures for the setting, including some used in turn of fortune’s wheel.
Ok that’s what I thought. When I bought it, I was under the impression that it was a premade campaign that ran the course of 3 books…….but lo and behold….i was fooled lol
If you’re interested in more, there’s a free intro called Spelljammer Academy that’s available for a short time:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/source/spelljammer-academy
Yeah but it was nice for me because I originally rolled a 9 for my rizz stat

Welcome! There’s some handy links there to get you started, but feel free to ask if you’ve got any specific questions.
What's the best way to look for a group? I get lost in trying to find a group.
If you’re looking to join as a player, the simplest start is to just browse through the available games in #looking-for-players and reply to any that interest you.
You can assign scores whichever stat you want…
Bit random but for a newer player whose looking to understand the game.. is there somewhere like a go to website that shows the sort of “latest” campaigns and books and manuals etc? Hope that makes sense because even as I wrote it I confused myself 😅
The dndbeyond website
Not everything is free and available - anything outside of the free basic rules (see pinned message in the channel here) or items currently available for free through DnDBeyond or licensed reseller require payment to access.
But the free basic rules are all you actually need to start playing
Everything else is “extra” if you will.
Thanks!! I’m trying to learn as much as I can prior to playing. Me and about 6/7 of my mates at work are looking to try it out but they’re kind of leaving me to figure out the majority of it which doesn’t leave me with much confidence 😅
Oh so future Dungeon Master… lol
That word scares me but it’s looking likely haha
Take your time, feel free to ask specific questions you have here (or in an appropriate channel - see #channel-guide), and don’t forget it’s a game and the point of a game is to have fun.
I’m still only a couple years into playing but what I found made learning how to dm/play less scary is to maybe pick an adventure to run first and then read up rules for specific situations and make your own notes about it. Also making character sheets eith your players can help you focus learning on what you’d need for possible options for the players. Then build from there. You don’t have to know everything at the beginning to get going. 👍
Thanks a lot that helps with confidence anyway!! I’m working the next 2 nightshifts so I think I’m gonna sit down with the rule book and try and write notes on any questions I have. Then guess the best thing to do would be finding an adventure I can run for us first!
Good luck! 👍 😊
hi im totally new just getting into it. i had a random character created and im joining a group locally. ordered stuff online (dice, rules etc). any advice?
Talk with your group up front about what everyone does and doesn’t want from the game.
The better everyone can communicate their expectations ahead of time, the easier it is to avoid possible unpleasantness down the road.
thats good idea
Is your group purposely using random characters?
im just new so im just figuring things out so i figure its best just to use a random character before i figure out what to do myself
Just learning how to playyyyyyyyyyyuuyyyyyyyy
yeah! i want to learn. i'm excited
Remember to have fun
If you are new, learning how to make a character is pretty important
Yes but I am playing a monk and needed all my other rolls for something else
Monk problems
until i figure out what i'm doing im going with a premade character i found online
Solid move TBF, its much easier to make a character once you have a better understanding of what everything does and thats best acheived through actual play.
So a premade is a solid move for your first game.
yeah i ordered some stuff online about rules and dice and character sheets but im going to research more online before i get started in person
hey im brand new to Dnd idk jack but i learn fast if theres any new sessions willing to let me join it would be greatly appreciated
hey im new and was suggested on getting a rule book, dice, character sheets (premade character online is easiest) and just joining a local group
Start with these materials
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.

You mentioned you're using a premade. What can you tell use about the premade character?
i found on the DNDbeyond website can give you a premade character,
