Doubts?
Yep
Elaborate?
Spent 2hours reading the Basics then 1 hour crating a character but i don't understand things like spell savings and others
And i don't even know if my character could be accepted in a real campain
Hello is here a DM recruiting players
Like if it follows the rules
Understanding of the rules will come with time
There are sessions today
Well, for "spell savings" - what do you mean?
Some spells may call for a saving throw as simple as anything else might, such as a dragon's breath weapon or the poison of a poisoned blade.
For spells, the save DC - difficulty class - is determined by the thing doing the spell, such as the Spellcaster casting the spell.
Wait could i send my character stats to se if they are even logical?
Check posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
DnD is not like an MMO where you will drop into a game, it can take a while to find one and then there is some prep work
I mean when you take some kind of ailement or damage and you tri resisting it
What about that?
If a spell requires a saving throw, it will state so.
Dungeon Masters also decide if and when any rolls are required and what type of roll it is.
Lets say you are a wizard and take an enemy spell and you try "resisting" it
what do you mean by "take" an enemy spell?
oooh thanks
that is stuff for the DM to worry about. You as player, only need to know where to find your bonus, when asked to roll a saving throw of a specific type. The Dungeon master is responsible for asking you to roll and deciding the outcome after you roll
If it's just "the enemy casts a spell targeting you", the rules are per spell
when a saving throw is required it will always be stated in the relevant ability/spell or effect
With Magic Missile, the only way to stop it is the Shield spell.
With Burning Hands, it says you must make a Dexterity saving throw (against the caster's Spell Save Difficulty Class).
With Fire Bolt, it says they must make an attack roll (against your Armor Class).
Things each do as they say
Go ahead
There's one one think that i don't truly understand DD
DD?
yep
what's DD
which means?
Aaah i see
Sorry i'm french so i dowloaded the french version
and it probably doesn't call it the same in english
uh... still don't know what DD is meant to be referring to
just type out the word. I am sure we will be able to figure out what it is
Difficulty Class I assume
Maybe
If it’s on your spell page it’s prob spell save DC
Is it in a class's spellcasting feature right by the calculation for a spell attack modifier?
A DC (or DD in french it seems) usually is a set number you need to meet or beat. So you roll your dice, and add any modifiers, and if you meet or beat the DC it is a success
How high or low the number is, depends on the difficulty of the task, or if it involves a spell cast by a caster, its "powerlvl" measured in the casters statistics
In the basics it would be in "Caracteristics throws" don't know if it helps
Saving Throws?
Do you have a link to your character sheet?
Link it here
I don't find how to do it
where have you created your character?
If you’re using DnDBeyond you can paste the URL to your character.
If it’s an image or PDF use a reputable file sharing service and link to it that way
that's for your computer
if you made it on DNDBeyond, simply use the share function, after making sure the privacy setting is set to public
point buy isn't just 27 points 1:1, it has an escalating cost
but scores also start at 8 on point buy, and you buy the higher values
I did 4d6 keep the best three then 5d6 for the rest
what?
don't worry i understood
That's not what you do
You do 4d6 keep the highest three for all of them
as in, you get six totals from that method, then assign those totals as you choose
But yeah, I assume you're a Wizard - as you went for Intelligence. But being only level 1...
You wouldn't yet have a subclass - like 'evocateur' which looks like Evocation to me.
You start with 6 spells of 1st level in your spellbook. You also have cantrips.
yep i just wrote it in advance as i already what to chose
And the spells written below aren't those that i have but those that i "can" have
You don't write in that you have them
After chosing evocateur
because you do not have them
And nothing about being evocation lets you have certain kinds of spells, there's no spell school restriction
Really?
It doesn't say so anywhere
Then what is it's purpose?
You specialize in evocation
Your subclass when you get it, will be that you're better at evocation
not that you can only do evocation
oooh
Whait but that means that i have to choose 2 spells from all of them at each lvl up?
You have as much access to the 8 schools of magic as any other wizard - you're just going to enjoy throwing gigantic evocation spells out and making it avoid hurting your friends
And not only my sub class
At 1st level, you only have 6 wizard spells in your book, each being a 1st level wizard spell.
Every level thereafter, you add 2 new spells into your spellbook, for free.
and at certain levels, you gain access to higher level spells - so when you reach wizard level 3, you gain access to 2nd level spells, so the 2 free spells added can be chosen from 1st or 2nd level wizard spells
So, at level 1, you start with 6 1st levels.
At level 2, you'd get two more, for a total of 8 1st level spells.
At Level 3, you'd get two more, but now you can choose to add spells of up to 2nd level.
And as a Wizard, if you find spell scrolls of wizard spells, or another wizard's spellbook, you could copy those spells down into your spellbook and be able to prepare them from then on. But it costs time and money.
I see but the 6 firsts spells in lvl 1 do you chose them
Or the Dm Chooses them (or random)
you choose them
As long as they are 1st level wizard spells
"At 1st level, you have a spellbook containing six 1st-level wizard spells of your choice."
Things do as they say
Thanks
Out of all the Handbooks, which one should one definitely own?
Howdy'O Folks!! How are you all, lovely people, doing today?
Fine thank you
But I don't think this is the chat for small talkies^^
Players Handbook. After that, Xanathar's or Tasha's.
Hiii, I'm new, never played dnd before but I've watched a lot and have only just started researching where I can find a group online to play with
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
The #find-a-game channel will explain how to use the Looking for X channels here. You can also look elsewhere like r/lfg on reddit, or on specific platforms looking for groups (Like Roll20 is a Virtual Tabletop (VTT) you can play D&D on, and has it's own find a game section) or such.
Do people like having completely new players in their campaign?
I really wanna try find a group to play with but idk how welcoming people are to people like me who doesn't really know how to play etc
I can't speak for everyone, but I love having completely new players in my games. I think it's super refreshing and helps bring new ideas to my tables and groups!
My only thing is that I like to know beforehand so I can mentally prepare to hit some friction points in combat, with rules, etc. It's not a problem at all - but I just like to know for my own sake.
If you join a group with an experienced DM, there is a good chance the DM owns the Players hand book at least and can share it with you on DndBeyond
Get the cheat sheets ready, the planogram of the character sheet and so on.
I doubt theres any groups near me tbh and I feel like having my own book will make it a bit easier, yk, dont have to rely on others
Ah I understand. Many ppl do play online using a virtual table top. It makes gathering a group easier obviously but it is a different experience from in person D&D
What's the easiest way to find a group, Im new to everything when it comes to playing dnd. I joined to see if there would be groups I could join or just overall advice
I'm looking at roll20 and it's really overwhelming
Man I'm actually here bc I can't find groups!! I wanted to refresh my knowledge and have fun while I'm waiting for all my irl friend to have time to play
I think "easiest" changes on a case-by-case basis, but I find the easiest way is to get a group of people you already know together and figure out a time to play. Since you already know them, it makes things smoother when it comes to asking questions etc.
Roll20 (and other online looking-for-group places) are also great because you cast a wider net to find a group if you can't form one on your own!
That said, Roll20 is really overwhelming if you aren't exactly sure what you want to do with it. It's a "virtual tabletop" (VTT) so it has a ton of features - a lot of which you probably won't use.
#looking-for-players
Skim through the posts in this chat and leave a message on promising ones
#750812887697588356 you can create a entry here, just make sure you note that you are a new player
The dndbeyond forum is also worth taking a look or creating a post yourself
On roll20 i recomment using the forum too if you are looking, the lfg tool is confusing at best.
How do I create a thread on looking for a DM?
Local games stores are your best bet, IRL games could be hiding in the weirdest places ask around in book shops/comic shops/anywhere that sells nerdy stuff/goth stuff, libraries, you’d be surprised what you find once you start looking
#find-a-game
There is a link in the "Join as player" section
I think I did it, I'm not sure if I did it correctly
Thank you for the help everyone btw
Should I wait to be in a campaign before I make a character on dnd beyond?
Waiting until you join a campaign can be a good way to make sure that your character fits the DM’s game world and lore, as well as any special rules they might use for character creation. However, making characters beforehand is fun, and could be a good way to learn some of the basics of the rules. So, just follow your heart on that
At the very least, just be aware that you might need to make some changes to the character if you do make them beforehand
Many DMs have limitations on character creation and in case of your chars background story, it is always better to work with the DM.
If you want to make a few chars to just see the result and get a beter feeling for races and classes go ahead, if you think you will ger attatched to a char you make and imagine up a whole origin story for them you find hard to let go to start over, then better wait
I've played Solasta a bit and loved the way they create characters if anyone has heard of the game. Is DnD beyond like a more in depth character creation?
I'd recommend coming up with a few loose ideas for characters. Then when you find a group, you can work with the DM to pick the best fit and add any final details.
Yes, this
Thank you again peeps, gonna be asking quite a few questions from now on I think 😅
Just wondering, how long does it usually take for a response on a thread when looking for a dm?
Not very long, usually
Unless they’re overwhelmed with replies, keep that in mind!
Ofc, I don't mind however long it takes, seems like a lovely community, worth time spent however long it may take
Could be at work, out of signal, only check messages once a day. Patience may be needed.
Hi, new player here, trying to learn and make my first character. What are the rules on unique styles of weapons?
What do you mean exactly?
That's actually a really good question, I'd love to know if there is like a limit on a unique weapon you could have
So, I am trying to make a unique type of greatsword with an extended or extendable grip to allow for more control of the weapon, and to help it adapt to the situation at hand
The available weapons according to the rules are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Weapons
Whether the DM allows anything beyond that is their call. Differences of description are often allowed, but not mechanical differences that impact gameplay.
is multiclassing complex for a newbie (around 12 sessions played)
In d&d, there is a list of weapons to choose from. Customization, in the sense of changing the actual rules of the weapons, like that doesn't really exist. Though, what you are describing sounds kinda like the Long Sword, which has the Versatile Property, meaning you can make attacks with it using either one hand, or two hands, and it deals different damage based on which you choose
I didn't multiclass until I'd been playing for two years. You could do it sooner than that, but it can easily result in a less effective character.
damn
You could describe it like that but I would not expect any mechanical benefit from it.
It could be a fun way to role play taking the great weapon master feat though.
I drew up a picture of what I was trying to go for, but I don't know if I am allowed to post it here
Multiclassing isn't too complex, its just very easy to do it wrong. You have to go into it with a very specific plan, or you'll usually end up with a weaker character
To be clear, I'm not saying you need to follow my example. I'm just offering a data point. Some multiclasses are not as complex as others. It depends what you're trying to do, but beyond that, that's more for #character-discussion.
I'm not trying to make it unique in terms of stats, I just figured on trying to do something unique in terms of style, per se
That may be fine, but you should check with your DM.
Make sense. Thank you
am statring my first game today and here what i got for my guy
i know i want to be sorcerer and the subclass Draconic Bloodline I look up sorcerer and i saw it and am think i could be a human rise by a blue dragon
i kind want to do magic so am go to try it
that works
Do you have your character on dnd beyond? It would make things a lot faster and easier if you share the character sheet.
sorcerers are cool
yea i like magic but i kind of hate runner and then use magic but i guess if am close but not far then i likei t
sorry i dont know what you mean?
If you’re starting your first game today shouldn’t you be talking to your DM about your character creation
my bad kind to know what i said i mean that i have to be super far way but if am kind of close and run and help if one them need help then i like it
yea my dm said it fine
sorcerers, unless specifically a gish, arent really gonna be in the frontlines
they dont really benefit from being face to face with the enemies
i just mean if i run to the frontlines then it find cause if they fall into a trap i can try to save them
im sorry i do not know what you mean about that
i mean i do not want to be like 30 feet way or more cause that i can save them if then fall into a trap and with this subclass i loss less hp then i would if am not the subclass
spellcasters in general are going to be more than 30 feet away from the enemy if they can help it
unless theyre a specific meelee spellcaster like a swords bard
Sorcerers in general have a lot of long range spells. Fire bolt for example has a range of 120 feet.
are you sure you want to be a sorcerer?
you can be a sorcerer, and you can be a close range PC, but you are gonna struggle to do both
What would be some good names for a goliath barbarian who speak in the third person
Same as a barbarian Goliath that speaks in the first person
Touche
Enoki thinks that big dumb Goliath should be called Erlrich yes yes
Hmm if big and dumb is their "gimmik" then maybe a word that describes objects or animals? Like Hammer, Thorn, Boar...
"This big, dumb goliath have no problem squishing little man who wish to be mean to him, yes?" lol, I actually typed this out with the voice in my head, and it hit so much funnier
I'm thinking something like Thrumm
Thrumm is a great Goliath name!
"Thrumm is thinking that it is time for supper. Thrumm would like deer. Thrumm will go get deer now." five minutes later "Here, deer! Come get in Thrumm's belly now!"
Now, for the big question. XP or Miletone leveling?
Total noob here with a quick question — I've been buying minis and assembling some props which I want to make use of. Any official (beginner friendly) campaign books that would make good use of:
- A campsite — winter setting
- A tavern
Obviously I would have to build more props for additional settings, but I am looking for a campaign book that could use what I have as a good starting point.
My google-fu is not really yielding good results... If you could be so kind to put me in the right direction 😃 . (Maybe this isn't even the right channel.)
Also, Fixed hit points leveling or Manual roll hit points leveling?
Those are questions for your DM. If you're creating the character for fun/practice, it doesn't matter much really.
XP and Milestone leveling is a choice made by the DM. You just set your character sheet to whichever one their campaign is using
Ok. I'm kinda just going through the Character builder and learning as I go. Thank you
Do fixed hit points for now. If you use this character in an actual campaign, your DM will tell you if you are allowed to use rolled HP or not, and even if you are, they will probably want to watch the process to verify your rolls
Makes sense. Thank you. (Thank the Nine for discord.)
If you’re practicing making a character you could make a adventures leagues character and use its guidelines for practice.
Explain the Adventure Leagues to me real quick, please
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Hi ^-^
Hello 👋 I look forward to finding some way to play some DND. Never have always wanted too. Just sort of never had the chance.
The pinned messages in this channel should get you started!
Playing online is an option
If you don't have anywhere local to play
hello 🙂
How do I start dnd
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
What race can I be anything? Aasimar?
Ask your DM. First things first, read up on the deal. Maybe make a character so you know how that process goes. But don't fall in love with them!
Every table is different, every DM has different requirements.
That depends are you playing a home campaign, Adventures League, or some other type of community campaign ?
Assume nothing. Figure out the basics first.
I need to find dm first?
Is there some sort of rule book for how many points do I start with
You don't! Test the system, kick the tyres. Just remember that every game, every campaign is its own thing. An idea you have beforehand may not work in the game you play.

So the playable race is the same as bg3?
Read the Basic Rules and it lists the base playable races.
No bdg3 made some changes to the rules.
Each DM may allow or not certain playable races in their campaign setting.
That's because Aasimar has to be "unlocked' by either owning the Monsters of the Multiverse book or you can buy it individually on D&D Beyond for $2.
Yeah that's the plan.
There are many additional playable races that you have to buy beyond the ones found in the free Basic Rules / Player's Handbook.
Drow is not in the basic book too?
It's in the Player's Handbook (PHB)
Think of the free Basic Rules like a video game demo. If you like it then you buy the full game via books like the Player's Handbook.
If you find a DM they'll probably share their books with their players.
I share my digital books with my players.
Am I getting this right
Base score is 8 max score is 15
Then you have 27 points that you can allocate
yep
And then you add or lose score base on class and race ?
Racial ASI gives you points. You don't deduct.
There are no bonus ability score points from class.
Race score is bonus or forced upgrade
There is no "forced upgrade"
If you choose a Halfling you get a +2 to your Dexterity score and there are two sub-races of halflings. The Lightfoot gives you a +1 to your Charisma score and the Stout gives you a +1 to your Constitution score (this is on top of the +2 to your Dexterity).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#HalflingTraits
Racial ability score improvements are either fixed (must be applied to the specified ability) or a choice
Races released or re-released after a certain point have them all as choices
An optional, rule lets you have all racial ability score improvements as a choice
Best thing to do is read the basic rules chapter 1 on character creation
How long until I can digest the whole book
Don't need to read the whole book. Usually just looking over the character creation rules and some combat rules are enough to get you started. Most clicks into place as you play.
☝️ that's why I specified a chapter
You read at your own pace. Just read the first four chapters on character creation.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
For your first character it's best to just focus on one or two thing. For example pick Halfling as a race, and rogue as a class and only read those bits. No need to learn all about spells, or all the other races.
Once you make your first practice character, you've learnt 90% of what you need to do for any other character.
a half-orc - barbarian is allowed. to start.
Yep, that's a sound character!
Or not
Although we're not your DM, and depending on the game you join their might be some extra rules. But Half-orc and barbarian are both Player Handbook / Basic Rule content, so most DMs will accept them
Do how would one go about finding people to play with?
In person or online?
how you would find anyone for anything really maybe ask around in your area or look things up on social media like discord
Well we can give more specific advice for either.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

For example, for online games there are the ' Looking for X' channels here, which #find-a-game gives advice and instructions on how to use. Gotta read them carefully.
There's also r/lfg on reddit, or the dnd reddits, or the looking for groups for specific online platforms like Roll20 (a VTT or virtual table top).
In person it's things like checking out local game stores, libraries, community centres, or looking on facebook or sites like meetup.com to see if any local groups are around. if not, time to kidnap some friends and try out a quick oneshot to see if they want to play D&D every week or so (depending on schedule)
Hi all. I hope you are all well. Just saying a quick howdy. I'm really interested in playing D&D but know nothing about how to play etc. I'm keen to jump into a campaign but need some more guidance. I'll do some reading but just wanted to say hey in the meantime

welcome! in the bot post above, you'll find some very helpful links for getting started
Okay I've been trying for hours the character sheet but i need someone to dm and talk with one step at a time can someone?...
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
Alright gimme a sec ill dm you a photo of what i have so far
Share a link here so everyone can chip in.
Kk
Btw that's the pdf my friend shared with me so if it doesnt work tell me
And im only doing the first page rn
So what are your questions?
First what's the background that's listed at the top
Hello im completely new 🤣
What do i put there
Hi welcome
Thank you
Backgrounds are features that adds flavor to your character. They can be found in the PBH, SAG, and other books as well.
Backgrounds give you extra items/proficiencies/features as well as other mechanics. Often times you pick these to be in line with your backstory
Backgrounds are explained in chapter 4 of character creation. You can find a link to it here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Backgrounds
Hi, I'm new to the server and am looking into starting to play.
At the top next to class and level?
That’s where you’d list the one you’ve chosen yes
Kk. Ill be back after some time when i have more questions
Choosing a background is part of the character creation process. The background space on your character sheet is just a place for you to write it down so you remember it. Honestly, that's all a character sheet really is.
But what do i put there? It's such a tiny space.
The link did not help me
Just the name of the background
Ex; if you pick the Scholar background, you just write Scholar there
the name of the background so you can refer back to it if you have a feature from your background so you have grounds to justify it
theres options listed in the books
Backgrounds are a list that you choose from. They all have names. You right the name of the one you chose
Googling lists can help you find them
The basic rules are free
Kk
Purchasing additional books will unlock more customization options, but to just get started, its completely free
Whatcha pick?
Online
Oo that’s a good one! 😄
As a new player? How many dice sets, should someone have, to help whilst playing?
Just one should be fine.
I use the googlr dice thing
well you only need 1 dice set, but I personally like having more for things that ask me to roll a lot of dice
I dont know anything about dnd i just did the tourtorial on google lol
and if you play online, you dont need any physical dice at all
Ye!
thanks.
I have a question, can you play D&D online with people from the internet?
yes
Ye! That’s what things like Roll20 and Avrae are for 😄
For example, my game has someone from finland, australia, america, and singapore.
Thank you!
You could also do it over discord
There's probably bots that'd to the stuff you'd need to do, like I know there's dice bots, not sure about other kind of bots though
yes
the calculation is the score-10 divided by 2
Yes, that is correct, 16 and 17 both grant +3
rounded down
Or just consult the table in the PHB/Basic rules
Hi I’m new to dnd I got a starter set for my birthday and I’m looking to get into playing I’ve never played a table top game before and I’m looking for any recommendations on good minis to represent each class I already have a few friends to play with but they have also never played dnd and I have all the things you need for dnd other than minis
The starter set was 5E
Frankly? You don’t need expensive minis to represent characters though they are nice. You can use dice, coins-anything really
If you want good ones tho I haven’t heard anything bad about the ones you get from Heroes Forge
Ok so uh I’m wanting to get into D&D but I’m not sure where to start, so any ideas?
You can start here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/how-to-play-dnd
So what things in the character sheet are decided during the game and what's not?
99% of the things you put on the character sheet is determined before you have your first session. Afterwards, things will be added/change as you level up/get treasure and items and gold
So things like death saves. Temp hp. And attacks and spell casting are during the game right?
Yes.
for example but you can already filli n your attacks and spells so you know what you have for during the game
I might need someone to walk me through this because 9 hours of videos and i don't get half of thos
My brain becomes smooth sometimes
Um if anyone wants to look at what i have so far https://docs.google.com/document/d/1m-Ht3ySfCDYDXvskMw-L1SncUfC6xkjdS1B3ieejtCU/edit?usp=drivesdk
How do I calculate inspiration?
And proficiency and saving throws
And skills
Inspiration is something the DM can give players - you don’t need to calculate it. It allows you to roll with advantage (roll twice take highest roll).
So that's during the game?
Watch the videos at your own pace. You don't need to watch them all in one sitting.
That is my pace though
Im a binge watcher
Hi
The DM gives out inspiration at their whim during the game.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Oh so i dont gotta worry about that rn?
You don't bother with it.
Yes, inspiration happens in game. Proficiency is set by what level your character is at - check the table for your class to see when it goes up. It starts at +2
I just played a campaign mid class
Skills are given by class and background and sometimes race
Inspiration is just a nice gift the DM gives to players for whatever reason they feel like. I reward my players with Inspiration if they do good roleplaying or make me laugh.
Is there a calculator?
For what?
Skills
Hang on lemme explain
You use the ability score modifier for your skills and add your proficient bonus if you're proficient in the skill. That's it.
No calculator - it’s based on your attribute numbers, your race attribute bonuses, and your class proficiencies.
They all work together
If your character has a 16 Dex (+3) and is proficient in Stealth (+2 at level 1, for example) then your Stealth is +5.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
The first chapter of the free basic rules walks through the step by step process of creating a character.
Ability score modifer + Proficiency Bonus (if applicable)
That’s why when you look at your sheet, the skill often has (stat) in it. It tells you what state the skill’s score derived from.
If you’re proficient in the skill, you add your prof bonus, which is determined by your level.
So if you have a +2 Dex, and a +3 modifier, and are prof in Acrobatics, your acrobatics score would be +5
What you’re proficient in is determined by class, background and sometimes race
With rogue, you also get something called expertise, which allows you to add double your proficiency bonus to skills you have expertise in.
So let’s take my other example. +2 Dex, and +3 proficiency bonus.
If you have expertise in steath, your modifier would be +8
The dots along side the skills are great ways to keep track of what skills you have proficiency/expertise in
Ooo
There's a fair bit of math in D&D, but it's almost all adding or subtracting small numbers. A significant portion of the character sheet is made of up tables where you can do that math ahead of time so you can think quicker during combat. You just need to make sure you update those numbers when your ability scores or proficiency bonus change. The D&D Beyond digital sheet does that bookkeeping for you.
If you’re not proficient in the skill, you would just add the base stat mod.
Ex; my character isn’t proficient in athletics but has a +1 to strength. So if I need to make an athletics check, I’d add that +1
Patrick makes a good point too-these numbers may change as you level up, hence why it’s important to track your proficiencies. Just to make sure the math is right.
Okay. What if im proficient in dex twice?
Proficiencies don’t stack.
It’s either you’re proficient, or you have expertise
Yes. You earn it at certain levels with rogue
For any dex skill you’re proficient in, yes
+3 yes
Alright. Then whats the saving throws for?
Saving throws are determined the same way. You’ll know which you’re proficient in
For stuff like dragon fire breath, poison, explosive blasts, etc
Oh
Your class says which two saving throws you add your proficiency bonus to
Which class?
Rogue
Dexterity and Intelligence then
i recommend you read about your class on dndbeyond
just type rogue dnd on google and it will show u the link
Kk
A saving throw--also called a save--represents an attempt to resist a spell, a trap, a poison, a disease, or a similar threat. You don’t normally decide to make a saving throw; you are forced to make one because your character or monster is at risk of harm.
Oh
So for proficiency. Is it all skills with that ability?
no, it's per-skill
Skill proficiencies and Saving Throws are entirely distinct things
Being proficient in saving throws does not mean you're proficient in all skills related to that ability
^
basically you have two skills in rogue that you can add proff. bonus to saving throws to (everyclass have them)
Filling out the sheet does take a bit
There is no passive wisdom. Are you referring to Passive Perception (Wisdom)?
That is….calculated in a way I don’t remember xD
Basically, you just mark down what you are proficient with.
At a base level, when you're rolling the d20 for the attack, or save, or ability check, you add the relevant ability modifier.
If you're proficient in...
The weapon you're attacking with
The saving throw type you have to make (such as Dexterity, here)
The skill in the Ability (Skill) check, if any
Then you add your proficiency bonus.
and passive perception is for the DM to use
(passive is for 'if you spam searches for 10 minutes' or secret checks basically)
I guess. I dunno i did this like 2 am when i was right down everything
a "passive" skill represents your ability to use that skill passively. So, for example, your passive perception represents your ability to notice threats or secrets when you are not actively looking for them
Perhaps go to sleep if this is overwhelming you. There's no rush to learn everything immediately.
^ this. Take your time!
this
No i just stay up that late. I have problems
You do you.
Filling out a sheet is a lot of planning-don’t rush it
personally i learnt dnd by playing it before that i just couldnt understand how shit worked
with more sessions i realised how easy it is
That's how i learn most things. Alright i think i have everything. Im finna finish this sheet then try to find a game
good luck man
There are definitely some aspects of the game that are best learned as you play, but I'm generally not a fan of going in totally ignorant of the rules. I've played with groups that had one or more players in that situation, and it slows things down A LOT.
love this hobby, ill be glad if it suits u too
yep just have basic understanding and ur class, race features more than that u will learn with time
I think i did it
Is it good to multi class a varfiant human in bard and rogue
How do i use the looking for games feature?
read the #find-a-game channel, carefully
not particularly
that multiclass doesnt get you much of value
it depends on the level split tho
im kinda going for a stealthy sly kinda character but idk how ii'd do it since this is my first campaign and one of my pals suggested it
Do you have any suggestions hjow to make that work
you could just be a soloclassed bard or rogue
when you want to multiclass, look at the individual features you'd get from each class and think about if theyre actually important to the build
in this case, rogue or whispers bard would both work well
or any other bard tbh
I still dont understand how to use it
did you read through it?
It's fairly simple
you use a bot command to fill out a form, then the bot posts your filled form
- Type
/lookingin any channel. - Select the command you want from the suggestions that appear.
- Complete the provided form.
Ok
Question - When it comes to the holy symbol for a paladin, what exactly can it be? As far as I can figure out, it is essentially a focus, but for the Paladin class. I was hoping to use a book, like a tome of sorts, but I am unsure if that is something I am able to do.
A symbol has to be that, a symbol
So it could be a symbol of a book, but not a book itself
Or maybe a crest on the shield to
Hmm. Thank you. Trying to make a unique character takes a lot of work.
If I don’t want to print out maps, is there a free online resource I can use for my map purposes?
A book in of itself is a symbol of knowledge, I don't see why that would be an issue
Additionally, the description of the Holy Symbol equipment in the PHB doesn't say it has to be a small metalic badge, necklace or otherwise. So you can flavor its appearance however you like
Thank you. Please tell me what you think of this.
Book of Divine Insight:
Lyrakar Thunderforge carries a weathered tome, its pages filled with sacred writings, prayers, and reflections on the divine. This Book of Divine Insight serves as his holy symbol, its cover adorned with symbols representing his past as a goddess and his present as a guardian. When channeling his divine powers, Lyrakar often opens the book, its pages glowing softly as he draws upon the wisdom within to guide his actions.
Thats awesome, I love it
Just make sure your DM is ok with you being a litteral god in your backstory lmao
I literally had, like, 40% of my brain working on this stuff during class. lol
Definitely. I figured having godly powers would be something of a 'No longer has them' situation. Makes a interesting backstory without the whole 'God-stiel' problem
Do you still need help?
A reliquary is a paladin option for a holy symbol I don’t see no reason why it can’t be a book containing holy pages
It also has to do with the information your character would have had access to while a deity
Pretty hard to have DM-secrets when the player can just say "do i remember this exact historical event happening while I was an all powerful entity"
If I were playing the character, I'd mention they got hit with some serious amnesia when losing their divine power
Not gonna lie, those conversations would be kinda fun. DM talks about some huge historical figure related to his plan for the session "Oh, yeah, forgot about that guy. Watched him completely blunder a date with his crush. Great guy!" DM just stares.
My main plan on the whole 'being a divine being' situation was to have them be from another world.
So there would be no continuity situations like that
That would solve a lot of issues I think, but it'll come down to what your DM thinks of it
For my campaign, learning that other planes of existence was real, was meant to be a pivotal point in the story. For a character to simply just know they exist as fact from session 1 would have scrapped that for me
I can message you more on the backstory if you would like, but I would prefer not to send it here so that it desn't bother the community and Mods on the server
Ah. Makes sense.
I'm not really in the mood for proof reading rn, just offering some advice
At the end of the day its up to you and the DM what works at the table so, you do you
10-4. Thank you for the insight and tips.
Have fun and good luck
You too

i have created a few im afraid to join a game cuz im so new i want to but im afraid id get kicked
everyone was new once
You can only get better by doing.
ok how do i go abou joining a game
If you don't join a game then you won't get the experience to get better.
Check #find-a-game
Hi all. I'm brand new, never played before but have wanted to get into dnd for awhile. Do I need to get any guides beyond these or will these pretty well be enough to let me dive in? Only asking because I know someone that has all kinds of dnd guides & stuff.
Those will probably be enough to start. technically you can start knowing nothing at all and hope your group helps you set up a character and explain as you play.
You do not need to master the rules before ever playing. It's just helpful to have a rough idea of the rules before playing. Besides, while waiting to find a game may as well try out making practice characters to speed things up when you do find a game.
You don't need to buy any books to get started the free Basic Rules has everything you need to get started.
awesome, thanks yall
No problem enjoy
ok im so lost
Where are you lost?
ive tried to find a game im so confused on how to do so
Did you read the instructions in #find-a-game ?
At the bottom #find-a-game is a prompt. Type one of the bot commands, such as /looking-for players.
ok but im not a dm
That was an example, hence "such as..."
oh ok sorry
Look at the other commands.
Woops
Guess you know what to do
That's fine. This is what this channel is for.
Best not to do it in this chat however
Like to post in #750812887697588356 you'd use /looking-for then select dm
I'm getting a char together for a mature game that I am new to. I am not totally new but have only played one other time with a super fun aarakocra artillerist artificer. This new char is to be a variant human twilight cleric and will be dropped into the game at level 8. Anyone have favorite feats for this scenario? I imagine myself as mostly support but still want to be able to throw down both with melee and ranged attacks.

This game is learned best as you go
Is there a good online community for dnd begineers that uses the 5e system?
This one
Hello 👋🏽 I’m new to dnd and know a few things about the game but I’ve never played. I’m not so sure on how to find a campaign suitable for a new comer. If anyone has any suggestions on where to go I’d appreciate the help
Check #find-a-game
Will do thanks mate
What do you want to know?
Yo I have a question
Just the basic honestly how do you start a game, how often do you play, what effect are limited and whatnot. I know how to spec a character but besides that I’m at a lost with everything else
Can I use mold earth to make throwing knives
I was hoping to join a group that could teach as we play I’ll be keeping an eye out in #find-a-game
I messaged you some tips
Rules as written, no, but always ask your dm at the table if you can pull off cool stuff
Thanks mate 🤝🏽
Depends heavily on the group. I imagine a large percentage wouldn’t allow it.
😐
There also isn’t any official rules for it
Unless VERY SPECIFICALLY agreed upon then don't
But I suppose you could find games with such Content
Wouldint the dm dictate it?
If everyone consents and they’re at least 18+ and they are all agreeing then probably
The whole group would need to agree
Yea and this isn't really the place to look for it because this server is filled with minors
You would have to look somewhere else
Any further discussion of it than just this wouldn’t be allowed by server rules
I'm not looking for it I was just wondering I was told there was ANYTHIHG you could do in dnd and I was wondering if that was included
No
Thank you by the way
I have another question if you don't mind
Would it be possible for a level 3 to beat an ancient red dragon?
No
Mostly, no
you shouldnt even be fighting one
Or allowing you to do some insane bulid
So is it impossible or is it just extremely hard and unlikely
I’d say impossible
What do you think the minimum level would be to do it then?
I'm asking for reference btw
15 at least I’d say? Idk-it depends on how many peeps are in your party
And what you’re playing
That puts it into perspective honestly
Dnd beyond has an encounter builder that can help with estimating that kind of thing
It calculates how hard a given fight would be a given party
Ancient red dragon is a Challenge rating 24
What's the highest challenge rating
30
Also what's the hardest dragon you can fight
Challenge rating is roughly the level for four players to be at, as it is over 20 the balance would be roughly 4 levell 20 players
With magic items to boost them
That’s for a medium encounter
Deadly you can go a bit higher than equal to the parties level, assuming 4 players
we are getting far afield from newcomers questions, as level 20 fights are obviously experienced
Yeah
All you need to know is there is a Challenge Rating system for official monsters that gives an approximate difficulty
The strongest dragon in the game would probably be either the Ancient Time Dragon, a Metallic Greatwyrm, or Niv-Mizzet
the original Tiamat stat block was actually a fiend, not a dragon. I forgot that they printed stat blocks for the aspects of the god-dragons as well
though if I'm being 100% honest, those stat blocks are a little bit overrated. Yeah their HP and Damage numbers are absurdly high, but they don't really do anything other than damage. The 3 dragons I originally listed all have a wide array of abilities that can take multiple party members out of the fight for multiple turns in a row
But, anyways, this is getting really off topic for the newcomers channel
Lets just move on
Amazing. I’ll be sure to look at that. Thanks
Dose anyone have a character sheet been looking for one that I can see that doesn’t look like McDonald’s sprite when you drink it
Not a fan of the og one?
No I just can’t find one
Oh
That I can get a image of that’s clear
Fillable Character Sheets PDFs
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
i know this is a long shot but if someone could help me with making a quick character sheet i'd be really grateful. thought about using dnd beyond but they don't have the artificer class (for free) and I really want to make one. im fairly unfamiliar with character creation played a campaign but I got a lot of help making it. I think I know everything I want just need help with the funny numbers and stuff.
The artificer is not available anywhere for free legitimately
If you want to make an artificer, you will need to purchase it
im playing an irl game
it is duplicating copyrighted material for free access
that is the definition of pirating
D&D is an intellectual property owned by Wizards of the Coast. They put out products that have limitations on how they can be distributed (copyright)
Don't confuse D&D (a product) with tabletop roleplaying (a concept)
You can't pirate the concept of TTRPGs because you can't own the concept of TTRPGs
But you can pirate D&D because D&D is a specific TTRPG product
ohh gotchu
ohhh reviewed the rules, makes sense, anyways any reccomendations for someone who hasn't had a game in a while for roleplaying? its been a hot minute and I wanna get it right

Im quite new to Dnd, I’ve been playing as a DM mostly, I’m just having a little trouble with the math parts 🥲😅
Eg- what am I supposed to do when there’s an goblin ambush?
What’s a gojo? #character-discussion would be the best place to build a PC
How do you mean?
We could go to #dm-discussion and discuss how ambushes and surprise work if you like. Might be a bit complicated for in this channel
But in general you follow these rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Surprise
maybe a silly question, but whats a good class for a newcomer that 1. isnt right in the frontlines or leading engagements but still sticks with the party and 2. is relatively easy to learn with not too much responsibility
I would try out ranger or cleric, both are fairly newbie friendly and both can focus on ranged options so your far away from the front lines
hii which ability score i need for bard?
Charisma for spellcasting. Probably Dex if you want to use weapons.
The quick build guide gives some help
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#CreatingaBard
thank you very much
I'm almost completely new to dnd and know almost nothing I've been recommended dnd so many times and I just don't know how to get into it can someone help me ??

Does anyone have any good youtube videos for newcomers wanting to play online? I'm still reading up on the rules, but thought it might be a good idea to spectate an online session to get a feel for it.

I will after my game
Well one thing I will say as a new comer too, once you get into it. It's so fun
Is there any kind of assassin class?
There's an assassin subclass for rogue
Can I always be assassin?
You can roleplay as an assassin with pretty much every class
Probably. If you're asking can I be sneaky and deliver high damage to a single target, yes. If you're asking if a game can be run all about the notion of doing secret murder for money, that's entirely dependent on what games you can find to join.
D&D (very generally) is about heroic adventurers going on quests to defeat evil and defend innocents. That's not to say that's all there is to it, but that's a very common mode of play.
Character creation is discussed in #character-discussion .
Ah ok
What should I say in #character-discussion ? lol
''Hey guys I'm new and I need a character?''
Absolutely do have a look through the basic rules and see what you can come up with, just bear in mind not all DMs run the same game, and many will have specific requirements or restrictions. Pop on over to character discussion and give us your idea so far.
Done! ... I guess
hey obvi this is DM dependent but is it normal/ most dms allow for racial feats during character creation?'
There's no answer to that I'm afraid
If you're talking about things like a half-orc's Savage Attacks or mountain dwarf's Dwarven Resilience, typically yes.
Those aren't racial feats tho
I defer to your wisdom.
A racial feat is something like Elven Accuracy or Dragon Fear
yuh
it's relatively common for DMs to allow all characters an extra feat at level 1, but I don't think I would say most DMs do it.
It's a minority, but lots of groups don't even use feats, as they are technically an optional rule.
@crude musk Should I select Simple or Custom?
Simple or custom what?
I don't know what option you're referring to?
im pretty sure theyre referring to the characters ability score generation
Ye
That's not an option for that
Idk.. is there a chat where I can send screenshots?
No, not for this
Lemme send it to you in DM‘s then
No thank you
Where are you seeing simple or custom, there should be more information on the screen
Are you saying this screen only says "Simple" and "Custom"?
What's the URL of the page you're on?
Or the tab if you're in the character builder?
That‘s what I just said
There is no screen in the D&D Beyond character builder that just says those things so I'm confused as to where in the website you are
Can you provide the link to the page you're on?
Yeah, so it does explain what each option does
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPjdPog_vKX1vnjf68Sx2jcq1OtVUSA2i&si=aJYnZ0muJq27KXN9 play list of how to make some of the classes on dndbeyond
Thanks for helping ❤️
Ooooooooooh phone's different thats why I'm confused lmao
I gotta choose Hit points now
Yo
If a Nilbog and 2 other goblins are attacked with magiv missiles
Would the Nilbogism stop the caster from attacking the other 2 goblins
Or only the Niblog
That seems like less a newcomers question and more a #dnd-rules question
Hey all, I'm new to DnD I've read over 30 books and have played the video games based on DnD in the past but never actually sat down and played with a group. I also don't know anyone that plays. If I want to get into it would you recommend I buy the Player Guide etc. and then find a beginner group on Roll20 would that be my best approach to start playing?
You can get started with the free Basic Rules (linked in the pinned messages of this channel), and if you do like it, then the Player's Handbook would be the first thing to buy. And there are lots of places to look for games, includng here and Roll20.
If you have a local library or games/comics/hobby store, they may also have tabletop programming.
I've never played on Roll20 would that be a good starting place?
As good as any, I feel.
Thank you very much appreciated 🙏
Hi hello what are characters supposed to be in dnd
Like can they be absolutely anything or do they need to be like
Animals or human-likes
These are the official race options: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
Whether the DM allows all of them or not is an individual decision. To say nothing of whether the DM allows unofficial content. It's common for DMs to be okay with a player taking official mechanics and describing them differently (for instance, a flying race that's officially a bird might be described as more bat-like).
Man it won't stop telling me that my character isn't finished.. even tho I filled out everything I think
Would it be against unspoken (or maybe even spoken) rules to make an illusioner character thats constantly in a form thats none of them, like an illusion
That'd be something to discuss with the DM, when you've found one. I wouldn't allow it because that's granting a mechanical benefit that may unintentionally impact other things. That's just me, though.
I see, thats fair
I'm used to drawing object characters so thats why I was asking
What is an object character?
Can I DM (haha) you an image of one
I'd prefer just a description, thanks.
I dont really know how to explain it, but the style is BFDI
Characters that are objects, real or otherwise, that have stick limbs and faces
Its very cool to practice expressions, posing and shading since the limbs are easier to draw and you only have to shade the body
If you pick a race with certain mechanical features/abilities, you can always clear it with your DM if you can describe it differently, so long as you don't expect that to change how the character plays. (For instance, if you describe your character as a chair, you don't get to say they don't need to breathe unless that's specific to the baseline race you chose.)
If you go to Manage, Character Settings, scroll down to Character Privacy and select public you can share a link so others can view it.
I think the only thing they would affect is if they like look out of place in the context of the world, otherwise they could be treated as a human
I will try to make humans if it makes life easier for the dm though, I just wanna be an illusioner and have fun!!
That's ultimately a good decision: make a character that fits the game/setting. That's why it's a good idea to have multiple character concepts!
Sounds like a reflavoured changeling
hello
im relatively new
i played like 2 years ago and like only 3 times
we could say that i know the very basics and i'd like to return to dnd

What information are you looking for specifically?
if i remember correctly, i need to createa character and then join a campaign?
and also, when creating a character, souldn't the DM be present while in the character creation?
If you know how to create a character and know the rules in general, you can try to join a campaign.
You don't need a character before joining. If anything, it's wise to make sure your character fits the game/setting, so have concepts in mind.
As long as you know the process of making one.
You can create as many characters as you want for fun or practice
To use one in a campaign you’ll have to follow your DM’s guidelines
i see
i should first join a campaign in that case
if im not very experimented with dnd, can the DM guide me through the process?
or other players?
Whats a changeling
It would help the DM a lot if you read the rules and grasp the fundamentals of the rules. Most DMs are busy as it is and there are two to four other players as well.
ok, onto the rules then
It's a race that Inherentky shape shifts
A changeling is a shapeshifter playable race in the Eberron campaign setting.
thanks a lot

DMS would really appreciate a newbie who knows the rules of their class and subclass at least
Can someone tell me how the material spell casting works? Looking at the basic rules book it says some material spell casting can be overlooked if you have an arcane focus (I have a staff) but sometimes it says I need to do the material thing, how does that work?
Some spells need actual stuff for someone to be able to cast them. Classes (eg druid) and subclasses (eg college of spirits) allow certain items to be a spellcasting focus. This focus overrides the need to have the items needed for specific spells, UNLESS they use up the item, eg Revivify needing a diamond of a certain cost
ok thanks
Happy to answer any other questions if needed
So like if I had a spell that used let’s say a vile of blood. I would use up the vile instead of overlook the vile cause I have a staff
If the vial of blood isn't consumed and/or has a gold value, you use your staff instead as a focus.
They don't use up the item, they just need it. Unless it has a cost. Eg revivify
Or explicitly says it's consumed
If you aren't using a focus (like a stuff, wand, rod, crystal, or orb (for arcane spellcasters)) then you would use a component pouch, which has all the necessary Material spell components that 1) aren't consumed and 2) don't have a gold value.
Usually just tell the DM your new
I just know that I get abilities and classes and a dice tells me whether what i decide works out or not
sweet!
is it easy to find a group now?
Online it easy to find a group (could take time to find a group you love)
thats reasonable
I aspire to fall in love with a group
can I find a group like literally rn?
within 5 minutes of looking
Not 5 minutes closer to a day or two but finding a group depends on a lot of things
Timezone/availability set up for you learning the game ect
It's not like a video game lobby where games are happening all the time. It's more like dating: finding mutual compatibility and shared goals.
Oh sweet true
aw xD
is there nsfw dnd? (just curious)
Up to the table to be on board, but that's outside the scope of this server.
dating example fits then
Depends on the group
thats fair
do you guys know a good resource to get a grasp of the game?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Server bots plus plenty of resources you can find
Fun is important, but the rules also provide structure. How much a group follows/ignores the rules is really dependent, hence why I mention comptability. If you're focused on one thing and everyone else wants something else, that's gonna be a bad time.
Oof xD that is true
I was told by my friend to hold the DMs hand and thank them deeply
Sincere thanks is nice. Touching should be preceded by consent.
True, its more about showing gratitude, not actually touching because I only have access to dnd on the internet
because they put a lot of time into making the world fun
Howdy
okay thank you guys! ill go check it out now
Just be nice and you will probably have a good time
mmhm
For spells that say V, S, M does that mean I have to do all of them or just one?
all of them
Does anyone have a list of every single spell of dnd
Just 5E or all editions?
It would be nice to have all editions but if only the 5e is available i'll take it
Oh, sorry
besides dnd beyond, is there a site or application that is good for compiling images, notes, and lore for your characters?
is the . on purpose?
nvm Ty!!
do i need an invite code?
tysm
Got one, i’ll dm you
That looks like a very toxic site
It’s good for keeping track of chars but for the love of god don’t interact with anyone on it
Doesn’t look set up for DnD character you might as well just fill out a pdf and save on google drive
I find making a private discord server to log everything works out wonderfully
i have one, but ive got no idea how to organize it
Hello eveyone I am a new dnd player who is jut starting out and is really excited to start my forst adventure i played Act 1 and @ od BG3 so I have a samll idea and also made mt 1st chater sheet on the dnd website
dang sorry for the typos
was typing to fast
I may suggest:
1 category per character and then have a channel in that group for a separate thing.
One channel can be for pics, another for backstory, etc etc.
to excited lol
tysm
Np!
I’m new
How does the illusionist work? I wanna play an illusionist sooo badly but I wanna know the basics
What about the subclass description are you struggling with?
I dont know where to look for the subclass description
Do you have access to the Player's Handbook? It's in the wizard section
Then you won't be able to read the description, it's not a free subclass
The free wizard subclass is evocation
No I cant access the wizard section at all
hello, i just joined and I'd have a few questions because im new and looking to try a specific idea out?
Hello, I just arrived in this server, I'm new as you can see.
I'm quite new to D&D, only had one campaign but it can hardly cound as one..
I am currently following the guidelines the server is giving me
this is the introduction, next up is joining a group, if I'm following the guidelines correctly..
same here, id like to discuss my idea with a DM and possibly join!
#find-a-game has the details on finding a group here, this isn’t the only dnd community for finding games so spread your net wide as it can take a while to find a game
If you want help making a PC #character-discussion
alright! im not too sure tohugh about joining, its just my idea id need some clarity on!
What’s your idea?
thank you!
I want to join my first game can anyone help me?
Here's the free basic rules section for wizards: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Wizard
Read (carefully!) #find-a-game
im wondering how feasible it is to join future groups as an npc "merchant" of sorts to sell canon/homebrew items of sorts, which I would discuss the balance of with the DM to alter stats and all that stuff -- appearing as one-offs here and there, but always suspsiciously at times of need
D&D doesn't really do "business NPC game characters" - that's more of something the DM builds and runs to fit the story/game they are playing with the group.
Yeah that’s not really a thing your either a player or the DM
yes, but i would like to play as a player/npc hybrid to steadily build up character over multiple games with different groups
The DM controls NPCs and monsters. Players control their own PCs.
A PC/NPC hybrid isn't really a thing...
The game isn't designed for that.
Different DMs may not allow cross characters from other tables.
alright keep in mind i barely played a one-shot so i dont have much experience at all
im almsot completely clueless so the clarification means a lot!
Each DM will tell each player if they need to roll a new character when joining their table.
oh ok
Outside of Adventurers' League, you don't normally hop between different DMs' tables with the same character.
Adventure league lets you play the same PC in different games
ok, sorry to ask more, but how would you help me re-establish my idea into a playable format without being a DM?
in adventure for example
adventure league`*
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Use #adventurers-league to ask question about AL D&D play
oh boy i wish this had a vc because i suck with explaining myself
thank you!
You create a character for AL following the AL rules. Then you can use that character across AL games and different AL tables.
Um i have a question, its about traditional and community games
Mainly about considering PCs.. sorry if this message should be sent in #dnd-discussion
It's just a newbie question so thats why I sent it here. (plus I dont know much about AL)
When I want to play a race that is not "playable " in the first player's handbook
Is it a traditional game or a community game, for example if I want to play as a goblin?
That's something you have to ask the DM which playable races are allowed in their campaign setting.
okay I guess it varies on the DM, thanks for the info tho!
A DM may have a campaign setting that doesn't have goblins or elves, for example.
I see XD
ok so i understand this, however, could you elaborate a bit on why even if i discussed all the DMs no-go's and what they want me to do, why I couldn't act out as a one-off NPC? Like, as you said DND's not designed for it, but in what area does my idea not work? sorry if its a complicated question, it's just I need to understand why it doesn't work because in my head it seems completely fine
also if im typing weirdly formal, i just finished writing a work email so im in buisness talk mode
Bceuase the game expects those playing to be player characters who go adventuring together. Not run shops and pop in occasionally.
Cause you would maybe interact with the other players for 10 mins sell them some stuff and have nothing to do for the next 3-4 hours
okok i see, in any case I'd be fine with the 3-4 hours of nothing really from time to time, but then how could I combine my idea with being a playable character then if I wanted to be more involved?
Don't be a shopkeep - be a fellow adventurer with the rest of the party.
If you came to me with this idea I’d not allow it at my table cause it’s not a team player, I’d steer you towards playing an actual PC and if you wanted to sell stuff you could do it like any other PC
the last part is what i initially asked about/meant! Like if thats possible, thats great!
But to also answer UndyingNoob, how do I set up like a hybrid role as a shopkeep-esque pc?
My creativity feels at its best when having to come up with homebrew items and thats what attracts me the most to DND so far, so I'd love a way to integrate that
The problem is there isn't a class for shopkeep
Maybe play a wizard collecting things to craft spell scrolls and magical potions
yeahhh, thats a following question of mine
Selling is you go to a shop give them your loot and receive gold
I forgot which class creates stuff: cleric or artificer?
artificer
Yeah I’d suggest articifer
ahhhh, so if i chose to be an artificer i could kinda do that?
yes
some subclasses are better at it than others though
D&D doesn't really have fleshed out rules for mercantile/crafting - it's very much dependent on the DM and the kind of game they are running.
Now we're cooking
That’s gonna allow you create items (within guidelines) but whether or you you can them is questionable. I wouldn’t allow it
yeahhh, i figured, id communicate everything i wanna do with the DM ahead of time
You're going to need the whole group - DM and other players - to buy into this and help with fleshing out the rules for it to work within the game you're all playing.
This is very much going against the grain of how D&D was designed though
And a DM isn’t going to let you make loads of homebrew items to sell
^
okayyy, I have a better grasp on things now! thank you so so so much for the help
I have a question how does bard spellcasting work?
What part of it?
Do they replace them every once in a while or is it permanent once selected
Cantrips cannot be change outside of a specific feature that says you can
Pretty sure this optional rule is from Tasha’s:
Bardic Versatility (Optional)
Whenever you reach a level in this class that grants the Ability Score Improvement feature, you can do one of the following, representing a change in focus as you use your skills and magic:
Replace one of the skills you chose for the Expertise feature with one of your other skill proficiencies that isn't benefiting from Expertise.
Replace one cantrip you learned from this class's Spellcasting feature with another cantrip from the bard spell list.
If yourbackground says "one of your choice" does that mean in addition to your already known languages
Specifically if Race says "Common + Another language" and Background says "one language of your choice"; would you have 3 languages including Common?
Asking cause i remember readingt something about Languages stacking weirdky
Thankfully the 2024 Bard will be able to swap a cantrip at every new Bard level, not just the ASI levels, based on the playtests
Ok but if it says ‘you now know x more spells’ then u can pick more spells right?
Yes, you would know 3 languages
Thanks, was double checking
The table in the Bard class text shows how many spells you know at a given level. When you gain a new Bard level, you can swap one of your existing leveled spells for another one(doesn't have to be the same spell level), and if the number in the "Spells Known" column of the table increases, you can choose an additional spell.
Ok thank you that clears a lot up
Just remember that different classes manage their spells in different ways, so just focus on what the text for YOUR class says and you should be fine.
So each spell caster class does it differently?
And Rangers
Cleric and Druid have it the same as well, but different from sorcerer warlock and bard
And wizard has a completely unique system
Paladins work much like Clerics & Druids
Oh I forgot about partial casters
I’m gonna make like a table or a venn diagram to group these rules together thanks everyone
Basically casters are split into known and prepared
Known are ranger, sorcerer, warlock, and bard
Prepared are Paladin, Druid, cleric, and (kinda) wizard
Wizard is like a hybrid
You prepare spells daily, like a Paladin, Druid, or cleric
But rather than preparing from your whole class list, you just prepare from what’s in your spellbook, which acts kinda like a known caster’s spell list
But it has a ton more spells
Question does anyone know where to buy official dnd stuff
I want to know all about dnd (especially the illusionist! I love the concept)
dnd beyond or https://dnd.wizards.com/
Whats the difference? (Genuine question not being sarcastic)
Oh, I live in argentina so I cant get physical stuff I think
Where can I get dnd beyond?
Ty!
Hello What determines the level of the character
your dm will tell you what level to start
there's two ways of levelling up
xp, or milestone
xp is "you gain xp from killing enemies and doing other things, once you hit a certain amount of xp you level up"
milestone is "you level up when your dm tells you to, normally at important points in the story"
Oh Ok 👍 thank you
I messed up
Oops.
I started looking for a DM but half my party isnt ready yet
How so?
Like we can't even get online to talk at the same time
Even if they were they're still probably not gonna be able to play for a long time
Oh. Yeah it’s crucial that everyone have an agreed upon schedule before a game can even hope to form. Also if you’ve already got a group it might be faster if one of you were to take on the role of DM’ing. It’s not often that there are lone DMs looking for groups. They’re often looking for one or two players to fill out their own group.
Hello
Look in #find-a-game
Read the instructions in #find-a-game
You have to do the / command
Then it will ask you to fill out a form
Or you can reply to a dm post
K
I got a few offers
Can someone do a mini campaign with me so I know how it looks like and works?
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Thanks for reminding me! I wanted to do that like 10 hours ago

So I gotta spend 1 hour only to read rules?
Are they necessary?
If you want to learn how to play, the rules explain it all.
The rules aren’t the only way to learn, but to play D&D, some level of reading will eventually be required.
Can't I just learn it by doing?
D&D is a game of rules.
If you want to find a table to play at then you will increase your chances of being accepted if you actually have working knowledge of the fundamentals of the game.
Read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos that are linked above.
If you have trouble understanding something then ask here. That's the point of this channel.
I can walk you through some of the basics if you want.
Remember that you won't be the only player at the table. The DM has to deal with other players too.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
