Welcome
Hey, how do I play? I really want to play but I just do know how to
If there’s any videos or guild plz show me
Welcome! There’s some helpful links here to get you started:
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
But if you’ve got any specific questions, ask away!
Hey I'm making a lvl 2 scribe wizard (I'm new to dnd magic) how many cantrips and spells do I take?
Have you read the wizard class features
Look at the wizard class table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#QuickBuild12
thx
You'd know three cantrips, per the table linked above.
And per the wizard's Spellcasting feature, you'd start with eight 1st-level spells in your spellbook. (You get six at level one, and two more for each level after.)
From those eight spells, you can prepare a number equal to your Intelligence modifier and your wizard level (2). These are the ones you can actually cast.
how do you set up a simple shop system for your players?
Maybe ask in #dm-discussion
Your DM allowed you to choose a magic item?
im joining the campaign late and the current party members have 2 rare magic items each, so i got to choose 2 rare or lower items myself
If you’d like help selecting magic items for your character, then the #optimization channel is the best place to ask that question.
oh this isn't #dnd-discussion is it
whoops
where can one induldge in the art of multiclassing
#character-discussion and #optimization are the channels for discussing character builds
See id:browse to see all the many channels (and their topics) we have here.
hii 🥲
Welcome!
I need help trying to determime hitpoints constution modifyer whats that
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores, determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
☝️ The last paragraph there will help you figure out your modifiers.
But they depend entirely on your ability scores.
Whats abilty scores
Oh thats 0 without stats
It's basically your stat
Oh how much stat points i would have in a 5e lvl 1 charicter?
Depends on what you use to determine your stat
There's 3 ways roll standard array and point buy
You'll have to discuss with the dm which one you'll be using
Oh ok sounds good ty silver
👍
Hey can someone teach me how to play I’m interested in playing but I’ve never touched or playe the game in my life

why is finding a group so hard
Spread your net wide
Because your goal is to intentionally force the creation of a relatively tight knit social clique willing to commit a moderate sized group of people to a regular investment of a relatively large allotment of time
It takes time and effort, always has and likely always will no matter what new tools and styles of play come along
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view good guide to finding games online (credit iamrazorwing)
i assume it doesn't but just checking, does the 'Unarmed Fighting' fighting style effect natural weapons such as the Naga races bite or constrict
'Natural weapons' have had a bit of a shift over the years in writing. The easiest way to answer that question is to see exactly what the text says. If it says something like
You have talons that you can use to make unarmed strikes.
Then probably not.
There is no official Naga race, so you might need to ask your DM.
Cough planeshift cough
Not official 😛
They're probably referring to the Naga from the Plane Shift: Amonkhet PDF, which is not published
Well... It's published in the sense that it's on the website. But as Spam has pointed out, still not official.
i assume that since it already give damage amounts it wouldn't effect it (1d4 + your Strength modifier, 1d6 + your Strength modifier) but it is still same format as unarmed strike (die + strength mod) so idk
Ultimately, unless a feature specifically says it can be used to make an unarmed attack, it probably can't. You can always check with your DM to see if they'd be willing to change the rule, though!
I got a question about Drow High Magic: "You learn the Detect Magic spell and can cast it at will, without expending a spell slot." so can I use detect magic repeadly basically like using a cantrip?
Naga bite is an unarmed strike and unarmed fighting style says unarmed strike
Guys i dont know anything about dnd and where i live there's no dnd clubs or host to play with how can i learn and play solo or duo? I'll appreciate the help

@lyric fjord here are some useful resources for getting started 👆
I don't think there's arabic resources right? bc my english isn't that good
Not as far as I'm aware
Then thx for ur help anyway I'll check the articles u sent
https://x.com/20arabiarpg?s=21&t=6ZjYSYvlQGW8CJC24ZgVOg found this apparently they hve a discord for Arabic dnd games
Thx
One of my players is a warlock. And so I was looking at his sheet and noticed he only can use level 3 spells and only has two spell slots? He says in BG3 (which Ik isn’t dnd 5e rules) he can use all of his spells that he has prepared on any level. Is this true? Is there a way to fix this on the dnd and beyond app?
I'd jump in here, but I know Colossus is gonna have a very accurate response for you shortly 😌
Warlocks are very unique spellcasters. As they level up, their spell slots change what level they are, rather than gaining new ones. So, a level 5 Warlock would have slots, that are both 3rd level. That is correct. What is important to keep in mind is that up casting is always possible. So if this 5th level warlock has spells that are below 3rd level, they can still cast those spells with those 3rd level spell slots, even if that spell doesn't gain an additional effect from being upcast
- Yes, they only have two spell slots
- Yes, they are both 3rd level spells slots
- Yes, they can still cast those first and second level spells that they have with those higher slots (sometimes increasing the effect!)
But on there sheet it says they only can cast at third level?
Like my cleric character shows that he can cast the same spell at diff levels but the warlock can only cast on the third level
Warlock spell slots are level locked
Exactly. They can only cast their first level spell using a third level spell slot.
This means that they'll always be casting their spells at the highest available level
So they can’t cast first level spells.
Incorrect
They can, but those spells will be upcast using higher level slots
I mean like they can’t cast first level spells at the first level
It would have to be at the third
Correct
Think of it as powering a weak flashlight with a big BIG battery!
And they only get too cast two spells max before needing a refresh?
Correct
how do i access the looking for players chat?
Go to #find-a-game and read the instructions there
Though remember: a warlock regains all their spell slots every short rest, unlike other casters!
i did but i still cant see either chats
Okay thankyou lots guys that makes much more sense!
You have to post the command in #find-a-game
Have you tried clicking the links that take you to those chats?
Guys i printed a lotr map can i use it for my campaign? Or does it have to be specifically for dnd
You can use what ever you want
There are no rules for what you can or cannot use in your own games
that's why its your game
The main problem that i don't even know how to play this game is just so complicated 😭
im think of starting d&d after binging stranger things and i wanted to know what are the essential things you need to start playing??

other than the rules just some people to play with an imagination
New player here, had my third session this week. Session ended with a cliffhanger, next session I'm likely to be the first to act and I'm not completely sure how to handle the situation. Very short summary: my character (Gnome Wizard) bumped into an NPC that can turn out be both friendly and hostile (the session was stopped before we find out (it was 11 PM real time and people preferred to go sleep)). The rest of the party is close, but not right at my back. On the one hand, starting of with talking seems risky, because I might be in trouble if the NPC turns out hostile (I'm playing a Gnome Wizard after all, not very tanky). On the other hand, I don't want to start with instant aggression. How do you as experienced players generally act in such situations?

this isnt really the sort of question for the channel, character stuff goes to #character-discussion
-
you’re asking a group of strangers how to handle a roleplaying scenario like its a test and you’re being graded.
It’s a game, for fun, and it’s your character. There’s no right answer- do what you think your character would do and enjoy the result whatever it is, as your table discovers together
New to dnd need help joining someone to play with and teach me the ropes any pointer or people having a session and have an extra spot
Make sure to read the game rules (see pinned messgaes here in the channel) then you can try and find a group to play with. The more you read up and get familiar with the game mechanics/rules, the better you'll look to a group (at least to some extent). To find a game, read the info in #find-a-game
Thanks for the info
me and my friends are sitting at the table playing our first game ever, and now we have our first combat encounter ever, with an ochre jelly. and we are just so lost, how does the damage work????
(help)
Did you guys read the basic rules
yea
combat is explained
but we are not very intelligent
What do you mean “how does damage work?” I don’t really know what you are asking
Please help us
im the dm, and i dont know how i should attack my friend
Well, first, you roll to hit vs their AC. Then if it hits, you roll damage. Whatever weapon or ability you used to make the attack will tell you what dice to roll for that damage
Melee attack +4 to hit, reach 5ft. One target. Hit 9: (2d6 + 2) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d6) acid damage
how
We don’t understand this
its very confusing
Are you a player or a DM? If you're a player you don't need to know this.
if we did it right, my friend died in 1 go
This is totally different then monopoly
Making an attack: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
we've been stuck on this for an hour, we decided to look at this together
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Roll a d20 and add 4. If that number is equal to or higher than the target’s AC, roll the damage as described there.
Thank you!
We are total noobs
and..? That can be part of the fun
Very easily, yes. That is not a monster a level 1 player should be fighting
Melee attack +4 to hit, reach 5ft. One target. Hit 9: (2d6 + 2) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d6) acid damage
The creature gets a +4 modifer to its attack roll, it has a reach of 5 feet (the next square to it).
If it hits, with the attack it does 2d6+2 (the 9 is the mean average of 2d6+2) plus additional 1d6 of acid damage.
OHHHH
i tried to get them to do the easiest quest but they decided to go for another one#
thank you strangers
Thank u guys we are restarting the whole game
we will do a quick restart
Because we are stupid
Nah you're just learning!
its very confusing lol
And hopefully having fun though!
A monster’s Challenge Rating (CR) is roughly equal to the level of a 4 player party that should be fighting them. So an Ochre Jelly, which is CR 2, is a good challenge for a party of 4 players that are all level 2
Yea its fun!
Well, Ochre Jellies are very dangerous if you let them attack you but they are also very slow. stay away from them and you will be fine, even at level 1
yeah oops
theyre not on this dc anymore just me lol no worries
I think its funny you say that, considering WotC seems to think that fighting several jellies is totally fine for a level 1 party
I think it would be more fine if the level 1 party was made up of experienced players, but it’s certainly too much for someone’s first D&d combat ever
true enough. WotC is kinda notorious for its deadly level 1 modules
especially in the beginner adventures lol
help players learn that characters are expendable?
but yeah, it's kind of a thing that early levels can be fairly swingy and dangerous
Is that instructions to us or what you think WotC is doing?
I'm mostly joking - I have no insight into the game designers minds in some of their encounter designs.
Sorry - didn't mean to cause confusion!
in the case that I think is referenced, two ochre jellies can be pretty effectively fought by retreating and attacking at range, as can anything with a 10-foot speed

Welcome! Check the pinned messages for some useful resources to help get you started.
Anybody willing to help a newbie out with building a character?
What class and race sound interesting to you? I'd start there. And check out the first couple of chapters of the free basic rules as it goes over character creation.
If you get stuck anywhere, feel free to ask here or in #character-discussion
Thank you
my players are officially level 2
are they now qualified to face the jelly
(they are not watching)
Potentially? Again lower level combat can be a bit swingy (e.g. the dice rolls can swing things either way) but if you have 4 level 2 characters, they should be able to face that jelly.
Consider reducing the jelly's HP or AC to help the party. As DM you have the power to adjust things as needed for the sake of everyone having fun.
okay thank you sm
Hello
Welcome!
Hello
I am a newcomer
Well you're in the right channel to ask newcomer questions about D&D
your players should have zero issues with multiple jellies if you remind them of how slow the jellies seem to move. imo. no need to nerf them
just really hammer it home that these things can not catch up to someone just moving at a normal pace
well we dont have a battlemat so moving and range is a bit difficult for us to grasp rn
so were just improving
I’ve been having trouble with my characters race, I’ve had a character idea in mind but just not the race
Well, do you have any sort of specific biology or innate abilities you’d like to have?
I kinda want them to be able to use a ghost arm but also be strong
Do you want them to be undead or have a horror theme?
Yeah
Gith can do that I think
And kinda look like ghouls
Hello. I've been interested in getting into dnd for years now, but now that I'm reading about it, I'm overwhelmed...
Perhaps consider the Reborn Lineage. This is a special race that was printed in Van Richtan’s Guide To Ravenloft, and it represents a character that has died and then come back to life. They have abilities and flavor themed around being undead.
That sounds perfect thanks
Welcome
Everyone here is more than happy to lend a hand if you need some help. What specifically is confusing you right now? We can take it one step at a time. You don’t need to know everything right away
What's a ghost arm? What does it do?
Oh. I'm sick right now, and overall reading and focusing is a little hard. I'm sure it'll be better when I try again when I'm not on the middle of fever. I guess I'm just saying hi rn
Thank you for your service, though

It’s really just an arm that can stray from the body and enlarge that I just made up
I learned a lot through videos, so id recommend those
Ohhh thanks! I'll surely come back. Dnd sounds very fun
There is a spell called Mage Hand that can do something like this
So, people can play online? You do not need the board game and friends?
I listened to jocats crap guide to dnd while doing stuff and it kinda engrained itself into my head
It’s like that but permanent
You can but I play irl with some pals
Roll 20 is what you’d use for online
That's cool. Dnd is not really popular in my country, though. Overall, it's very hard to find niche communities here. I'll stick to online
D&D isn’t really a board game. It’s just a set of rules. You can use maps to visualize things, but they aren’t required. All you really need to play is dice and a way to talk to people. That can easily be done online. There are also online tools that can be used as maps as well though
Sounds good, thanks
My friend recommended I try dming because I drew maps when I got bored, I made a big ole map for my current campaign
Looks nice in my opinion
It’s a cantrip, so you can cast it as many times as you want, whenever you want. It basically is permanent.
Well, me put it this way: the ability you want doesn’t actually exist, so rather than make something up, why not just take the next best thing and reflavor it to fit what you are looking for
I just made it up during a shower
Sure, but D&D isn’t a game where you get to just make up powers because they sound cool. There are character creation rules, with a list of the powers and abilities you can choose from. Fan made content (called “homebrew”) does exist, but I highly recommend you do not make or use homebrew while you are still learning the game.
Homebrew is cool when world building and doing enemy encounters and stuff but I generally don’t let my players make up abilities because it can easily destroy the balance and pace of a campaign
The trick with homebrew is to check with everyone in your group if it sounds fair, balanced, and cool. If everyone is on board, then is doesn't matter too much how broken it is. Just keep in mind that everything has limits.
I really feel like discussions of homebrew and advice on its implementation is outside the scope of what should be discussed in the newcomers channel
Fair enough
As a moderator I agree. Let's get back to helping new-to-D&D folks learn the core game rules and mechanics
Yeah, I don't recommend bringing up homebrew when new players barely know the base rules...
anyways, last session I had one of my players as a half orc threw a gnome through a elf and killed him
You can relate your sessions in #tales-from-the-table BTW.

Hello everyone! I’m relatively new to D&D (played two or three games myself as a player) and am looking into being the DM for my upcoming campaign. I will have the dragons of stormwreck Isle starter set and I have purchased the essentials pack. Are there any other materials that are recommended?
Alright thanks so much ! 🙂
the dm creates the story and world
however there are a large number of precreated adventures and worlds out there that dms often use
Question: How does one go about starting a DND as a newbie with no friends at all who remotely like dnd (or that all their friends have been in a 3 year long game or smth and thus I can't join)
You don't really need anything as a player just go #looking-for-players to find a game for yourself. What apps you need will depend on the dm of course
The basic rules all seem so confusing
The most important parts to learn as a player is how to create a character sheet and then the core dice rolls like skills check, saving throws, attack rolls, and damage rolls. That said the DM decides what dice rolls are required and in what context.
So read through the rules (don't need to memorize them but having a general idea of what they are will help with playing the game), check out some videos of folks playing D&D to see how the game flows, then find a group and start playing.
Atm im trying to figure out how spells work
Spells do what the say they do (at least mechanically).
Some spells require an attack roll - d20 + your spell attack modifier (check the class details for details on how your spell attack and spell save DC are generated).
Some spells require the targets to make a saving throw.
Is there a specific class you are playing and a specific spell you're trying to understand?
Is it allowed to be a Pseudodragon?
By the rules, that is not a playable race. That said you could use a spell like polymorph to become one albeit temporrarily.
If you have a specific technical question about DnDBeyond, you can ask those in #ddb-support
ok
I planned to play a cleric and I was just looking through the spell list trying to get a understanding of what they do
But DnDBeyond follows the standard rules when it comes to character generation.
Cool thing about clerics is that they are prepared casters - meaning they know all their spells but only have the amount prepared that they are allowed to for their class level. And every in-game day, your character can swap which spells they have prepared.
So in some sense you don't need to worry too much about "I can only get one of these spells, which one should I pick?" like say a sorcerer does.
But you still have to decide which ones you'll have prepared for the day.
As im looking through the list. Different spells have weird descriptions that don't specifically say what they do. E.g. guidance and resistance cantrips
So guidance: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/guidance
So what guidance does is add to someones ability check?
You touch a creature and while the spell is active (e.g. lasts for 1 minute), that creature can add a d4 to one ability check roll of their choice.
So yeah, it's like you give them a bonus d4 to add to one ability check roll.
Ok , so it would be something that I have to be able to anticipate ?
Not necessarily - cantrips don't take any spell slots and are always prepared.
You would need to take the spell though (and it's a decent utility/buff spell) and then use your action to cast it.
some DMs are more lenient than others with the timing, but technically you have to cast it before the ability check is made
Can someone explain dnd to me?
You get together with friends to play a game where you're different people in a different place doing different things usually heroic and fantastical
And for the game play?
The DM sets the stage/scene, ask the players what their characters do, decides what rules are in effect and if any dice rolls are needed and what kind and what bonuses/modifiers apply. Players roll dice, report results, DM decides how that impacts things. Rinse and repaet. Stories are told, fun happens.
DM is kind of like a stage manager - players playing their characters are like the actors.
How long are games?
How do I play dnd?
as long as the group decides to play for. Usually sessions are something like 3-5 hours long.
Games can take years
U can do 1h games?
U can play across multiple days?
But if you really wanna make it long like @true shard Said it'll last year's
Yeah and as long as they agree to play
That's something to decide with your group but yes a session could be an hour
you wouldn't get much done. Two hours is the minimum reasonable session length, IMO
.
Most game sessions tend to be 2-4 hours but that's just a generalization. Each group is different.
most groups play regularly, 1/week - 1/month
Oh so it’s across multiple sessions
@inland spruce By any chance do you have a comman class that you play
What’s that
Yeah a traditional dnd game is played weekly usually but it can have any time control that the table wants of course
You don't know what a classes is
I mean it's the newcomers chat
I’ve never played before

Your class is basically. The thing your character revolves around
So my character is a mechanic
A character does not have to revolve around a class. There are a lot of other things that make your character a person.
Ima just start by getting a starter set
What’s the minimum players?
I'd say that three is the best number of minimum players.
I have an idea for 1 friend
Max keep it at least lower then 6
Ok
Oh so real quick question are you running dm
How do u get sessions to connect?
Idk
What do you mean by that
Howdy
Like do u keep board and that out in same way as last t8me and have ideas written down
Howdy
It's like any tabletop game - you coordinate schedules, find a time and place to meet (in person or virtual), then play
Howdy
Here's a guide on ways folks play D&D online: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
That’s not really what I’m asking
Yay what he said @echo kelp
.
Usually the DM keeps notes about where a game session leaves off
Ok
Yeah
People usually play a continuous story yes
And for the board?
Oh it usually stays the same
like how do u remember how it was?
Boards as in maps?
As a new player should you put yourself at lvl 1 or maybe start off at lvl 3?
Like the gameboard
Usually I try and make sure we end in a place where maps and detailed locations are not needed
Yes
"The party ends the day sleeping in the inn on the way to Emberwood Village"
Also, if you want to listen to some dnd. I would heavily recommend tales from the stinky dragon
No maps and locations needed
You don’t need a map with tokens for every session. It’s not an actual board game per se.
Again don't end the session where you have to remember where folks are on a gameboard
Your notes that's really like all though we can really say
Most D&D doesn't even use maps except when a battle starts-up
Oh ok
And while some battles do run longer than one session, I’d say those are the exception rather than the rule.
How long is the demo?
Well under an hour, I’d say. Maybe closer to thirty minutes?
Ok
What are all the different 'versions'? Of dnd? Is there any specific difference?
There are five major editions of D&D, without getting in the weeds of things. And they are all quite different from each other in terms of their rules, options, and such.
Can anyone help me with the online set up
Online setup of what?
Honestly I wanna join a party or a game and I really don't know where to start
Have a look at the basic rules, linked in the pinned messages of this channel?
Hello! Obviously I'm new to this community and game, but I have been watching videos of different campaigns to understand a bit of the game. Anyways I'm looking for some help with starting and also making friends to play with 🙂
have a look at the basic rules. theyre linked in the pinned messages of this channel
I'm in the same boat too! I'm getting into DND. Learning the rules, and wanting to build up my own campaign for my friends.
I was looking for some, assistance from people who may be more experienced then me. I need a bit of help undertstanding the rules/structure of the game. As well as wanting to build my own magic system if I can- otherwise, wanted to see what type of homebrew systems there are out there.
Well, we already have a magic system for DND
Right, but I haven't yet seen if it can withstand the type of magic I wish to put in my campaign.
Since, well, I haven't taken a look at it at all. 😅
The spell system in dnd is very reflavourable
Reflavorable...?
describe different, cosmetically
Oh, so- meaning I can use it, but swap out names?
Names, descriptions, basically all the things that aren’t mechanics
Describing things differently without changing them mechanically
It’s not easy to create your own spells, particularly as a new player with no context of the existing rules and balance. Thats why you’re encouraged to learn the default rules and learn existing spells
I figured it wasn't gonna be easy, which is why I've been a bit slow at opening the rule book.
But! There is so much ambition and desire on what I want- I'm just gonna have to figure it out.
Hello where can i play dnd? And is there a way to play without a pc?
For the first question, there’s no dedicated “place” to play dnd. To get started, you’ll want to read the basic rules, which are linked in the pinned messages of this channel
For the second, yes
Either you can find a group to play with in person, or you can find an online group that either doesn’t use a vtt, or uses a mobile compatible vtt

oh, thanks 🙂
There is also other places to look like r/lfg or other reddits dedicated to diffferent online platforms (like Virtual Table Tops), roll20's lfg.
Or in person by looking into local gamestores or seeing if there are any local groups on meetup.com or facebook.
ok
Also it can take a while to find a group. Especially if you're looking for in-person
How do I unlock the different than standard races/subclasses in DnD Beyond character creation?
You'll need to purchase them from the books.
You can buy them individually if you’re not ready for the full book yet.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
hi all 👋
ive fallen in love with watching people play dnd through streams and youtube but have yet to play myself, hopefully looking to change that in the near future 🙂
Do you have a group to play with?
So I started playing DnD very recently
after every level up* am I supposed to inform my DM the changes I made in my characters abilities?
like the spells, feats, what stat increases I took
Level up*
It depends on the DM but generally a heads up about new stuff you get is a good idea
Especially if it's unusual (like a feat or a specific spell)
Honestly best to ask your DM directly what they need to be informed about
If you’re new, you probably should share your character sheet with your DM on level up to be sure you made choices as appropriate instead of arbitrarily.
But it definitely does depend on the DM.
what can I do on this server?
Talk to people
ok
Ask questions about D&D, making a looking for players post, share your homebrew, answers someones question about DM'ing
i require a bit of help with the creation of my first charracter, anyone free?
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?
someone is helping me in character-discussion
started playing in my frist ever campaign last night.....i'm fully addicted
Congrats
Cheers
It was the most fun I've had, now I'm just trying to fill the void till next Friday lol
coughs havin each day a game cough
Even 3 each week for me is starting to overwhelm me xD
our DM does I believe 3 other games, but this is his only in person game. I'm so hooked, I'm bouncing through Twitch watching campaigns trying to fill the void. I wann play more so bad lol
That really is the D&D experience
Hey i am brand new to DND if anyone would like to teach me how to make a character I would greatly appreciate it
Do you have a character sheet?
Have you got any thoughts about what class you'd like to play? There's a list here (https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes), or you can tell us the top three things you want your character to do and we'll work it out.
I want to have a character that can do funny things. That's really all I care about currently
Thats less a class choice and more of a roleplay choice
I literally know nothing about DND so I wouldn't know
What's the best class to choose for a beginner?
One of the martial classes (weapon users) a fighter, rogue, barbarian, monk - with Fighter being the easiest
I would go for bard or sorcerer to start with. Have a look at their class pages.
All spellcasting classes/subclasses demand more studying/in game decisions and tracking
Oh ok ok, thanks do you have any tips for beginners like me?
Bard is probably best with their charisma.
Don't be afraid of playing a spellcaster. Just be prepared.
What can shape shift?
Druid
Study you class features
Read through the combat rules
Thinking about how you’ll spend your movement/action before its your turn
Role play wise, think if your character’s personality, goals, flaws
Are there any classes that deal with like earthy magic or are close to earth? (does that make sense?)
Have your character sheet organized and be familiar with where to find stuff (your modifiers)
Druid
Druid, ranger, rune knight fighter
Cool cool! Thanks for helping me, this is giving me a lot of insight for what I want to do ❤️
The bard seems most interesting to me. What now?
Are you in a campaign?
No
Time to pick a race.
Okay
You'll need to pick a race. Here's a list: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
Any particular characteristics you'd like to have?
For abilities, what’s the best way to go?
Like should I let the site do my ability sheet orrr should I roll for them?
Do you have dice?
I a. Trying to look at the harengon but it keeps on trying to make me buy something...
Use the standard array method.
Only the Basic content is available for free.
Oh well the link Hella sent works fine and i think thats what i choose. The harengon
I was gonna use an app for the dice
That's fine. Do whatever is easier.
That is just the wiki page on their lore. It does not include any of the game mechanics that come from actually playing as that race
guys, any tips on how to create my first character?
Im new to dnd and I was wondering what should I do before I try playing

You have to purchase the book that they were published in, either online or physically. Though if you purchase it online you have the option to purchase just the individual race instead of the whole book
I can't just search for the "game mechanics" of harengon?
Any website that allows you to access copyrighted material for free is piracy.
Oh
If you think of D&D like a video game, it would be accurate to think of Harengon as a “DLC” character
Refer to the botpost above
Remember that your DM may not allow certain playable races if they don't fit in their campaign setting.
Check out the botpost above
For example, cute rabbit person in gothic horror set in an inescapable domain of dread
I will say that if you have a good story for why you chose the race, most DMs will go wit hthe rule of cool. I created a Harengon Bard who was a storyteller and pathological liar who would drum up stories of bygone heroes like the time Alice slayed a Dragon because he convinced her it was a good idea.
How does one figure out the skill?
clarify?
What skill?
the skill section on a character sheet how does one figure out what you tick
your background, class, and maybe if your race grants it
For example, the Soldier background gives you Athletics and Intimidation, whereas the Fighter class gives you a list of skills to choose 2 from.
I dont see anything that indicates what skills to tick on the bard and Lightfoot halfling
The word you want to look for is proficiency.
Bards can choose any three skills to be proficient in.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#ClassFeatures2
Skills: Choose any three
oh this is where I belong
so does anyone have an advice for people who are absolutely new, how to start, what to read. I have no friends that could help, and I think finding a group to play with would be the easy part.

Why so many boxes in character sheet
On DNDBeyond or on a paper sheet?
I am using a digital sheet
pdf sheet?
On DNDBeyond?
What does carisma do
Charisma is one of the 6 key stats. Charisma is predominantly used when you are doing stuff related to being charismatic. For example, when you are trying to persuade an enemy to lay down his weapons in hopes of reaching a mutual understanding.
Thanks
Ability Stats With Tomato
Strength is being able to crush a tomato.
Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato.
Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato.
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.
Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
I like that example
hello! i just joined hehe
not sure if there is a better place but how can i post for a game ? im looking for an extra player
Go to #find-a-game and read the instructions (carefully)
As a beginner who is looking for an earthy type of race which is best?
Hiya Guys! I’m new here and a beginner for d and d so I’m not too sure where to start! Is there any suggestions ?
Earth Genasi in Monsters of the Multiverse is good, if Dwarf doesn't satisfy you
Thanks so much!

can I use one character for multiple campains at the same time?
The idea, sure
the same sheet, no. You might advance in level at different rates, find magic items, money, equipment, or have things happen to the character
That's up to your DM if you can transfer a character from another DM's campaign.
As for me, I don't allow it if I don't know the other DM because I don't know if they player is honest and claims they rolled six 18s and got a lot of magic items from that other DM's campaign.
You could play either or, and flavor your character as having both from parentage
But as far as the rules, you have one or the other.
Unless your DM decides to allow/make a custom homebrew race incorporating bits and pieces of either.
how do i find a dnd group?
you can use our #find-a-game channels
I would probably say find a game but I wouldn't know

What's the best choice for background?
depending on class
Druid
Thank you!!
Best how?
Well I'm not sure like how to put it but just best for a druid like I said previously
Does that make sense??
Well, it depends on the character
quick build recommends Sage, as it fits the general basic nature (heh) of Druids
Oh? What would you say is best?
Well, it depends on the character
I choose a Earth Genasi
Hermit or Outlander could be appropriate, thematically. What you want to look at in the backgrounds is the feature. Everything else is negotiable.
class and race doesn't determine who someone is
Oh ok ok
makes sense
Druid criminal, heh, I can see it. Acolyte makes sense.
where do i go to find ppl to play with?
you can use our #find-a-game channels here, or you can have a look at this guide by Iamrazorwing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
What you should ask yourself is what did your character do before becoming an adventurer.
nice advice I will take that into consideration
Remember. Your background is just your character's profession or lack of profession before they became an adventurer. Perhaps your druid lived in the wilderness among a secluded group of druids so you chose the outlander background. Or maybe you're a burly half-orc who is tired of working on ships so you picked the sailor background.

love u bot thank you
i really wanna get into D&D again but i feel like it's gonna be hard to get into it again because when i tried playing it previously my old DM honestly was not the best
like he was forcing a REALLY specific "story element" onto everyone with a specific item that i really did not like and did not want to be part of my character but had to do anyways
and started off with a campaign that doesn't exactly seem beginner friendly from my research
unless i'm wrong and beyond the witchlight is a good starter campaign but in my opinion i don't feel like it was a good place for me to start
there's not really a thing as "being good" at DND
it's not a competitive game and campaigns have their own things to them as far as i'm aware
If you think the tutorial game is boring then perhaps this is not the game for you.
that's more for an extremely basic introduction to the concepts of it
like interacting with people, what the ability scores do, and the fact you can usually do things in a myriad of different ways
And ironically, in an actual game, you can just say anything, no prescripted choose one dialogue option out of 2 to 4
this is not fallout or skyrim
this is the real world
you can tell all of the characters in the game to suck it if you REALLLY wanted to but i assure you you're not gonna live for long in that campaign
Also a big important note is that it is a collaborative game - everyone playing should be working together to have fun. That's not to say folks won't roleplay their characters having a bit of interpersonal conflict but at the end of the day the focus is on everyone having fun.
and don't be an edgelord
maybe not kill others characters got it
murderhobo-ism is an observed phenomena
💀
You can be edgy, as a treat, just be sure to make your character an actual character with depth, and remain co-operative and not obstructive to the game and story.
Murderhobo play is possible but usually only goes so far on the "fun" scale from what I've seen. In 5th Edition D&D there is a strong design bias towards heroic fantasy, not edgelord power trip fantasy.
im just kinda confused on how i make a backstory though? im comin in completly blind
just come up with something and work it into "and that's how my character is in the party"
I say this because being a dark and broody evil character is much less forgiving than basic "druid likes nature, barbarian likes alcohol, wizard is smart" stuff, or "the nice paladin is a super nice person"
For example, if you found a beggar begging for money in an alley you might want to give him a gold coin. Meanwhile the half-orc might yell at him and tell him to get a job. On the other hand the high elf fighter might want to ask the beggar if he wants to "stay at his for the night".
An example could be an Archer from an army getting frustrated that their talent with a bow was getting completely ignored and the credit for their contributions instead went to anyone who lightly brushed the enemy with a sword. So, the Soldier background, and a justification for them to join an Adventuring party in search of glory while also protecting people and the nation in the same way the army does.
An important part of a DND character is, why are they roaming the world and being essentially a mercenary in a party of 3 to 6 people?
like textbook definition
It's like writing the character for a story. Is the main character a dark and handsome knight with a drinking problem or is the character a humble farmer who wants to find his kidnapped wife?
Basically, look at any fantasy movie, that's basically a campaign
also i don't think it helped the room i was in when playing DND for the first time because all the other players at my table were dedicated theater kids and i was just. also there for the ride
If you've played any games with story modes, they're also usually called campaigns
A campaign is basically just a series of adventures, usually with some sort of overarching story connecting them
An adventure is just a story that you play through, usually involving talking with people, exploring places, and fighting bad guys and monsters
ohh.
like the journey of The Last of Us, Spec Ops: The Line, the Halo series, etc
each story is that game's Campaign
oo so do the DM pick the campaigns?
i got not many chances to speak, made up story elements that i didn't like, and in a campaign i wasn't interested in starting with
anyways how did you guys do in your first campaign
So for your DND game, the campaign is your story. You're campaigning against evil (98% of the time lmao)
thats what u get for working with theater kids ig
Yeah the DM acts as the world, the people, the monsters, the plot contrivances and conveniences, and the storyteller
damn 😫
usually
and as in "not many chances to speak" i don't just mean "ohhh im not the main character :(" like even for a "side character" i wasn't able to do jack shit half the time
Pretty much. Though the players sometimes have a choice in the matter. It depends on the DM.
Do DM like have the whole story mapped out or something
Story just works better when you're of a vaguely nice alignment
They’ll generally have a rough idea of the general plot points
Not entirely in advance, outside of prebuilt Adventure books, such as Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk
But it’s normally very fluid and changing
i totally know what those are yes
No plan survives contact with the players
ok this is sounding better the more i learn
For example, in my game, I'm planning around like 5 different villains, but the party is currently travelling from a certain point on my world map to a certain city on that map, so I only need to plan for the area they'll generally be around for the foreseeable future
so HOW do i find a good DM and team to play with so i don't feel like i'm just sitting there and making the game worse for everyone because i didn't get chances to do stuff
Campaigns that already had the plot written and planned by professional writers.
ok so how do i start playing
Here's a classic example:
The DM can say the party is offered ludicrous money to do a heist (likely to be taken due to money)
The party chooses whether the mood is mission impossible, the pink panther, or benny hill
thanks ham my ride or die right here
They also usually don't have conscious control of that choice, and it gravitates towards benny hill anyway
Have you had a look at the basic rules?
Interview the DM and fellow players. It doesn’t need to be formal, just a non-game conversation about preferences, experience, and the like. Maybe if you’re joining a game already in progress, you can observe a session. Knowing what you want from a game makes it easier to advocate for it!
alright
i ask because i don't wanna seem like a snively brat to a DM though i might only be thinking like that because of my negative first DND campaign experience
being conscious about not wanting to ruin any fun for others is a pretty good thing IMO
Talking to the group to be sure you fit is, in my eyes, a mature thing to do; it ensures nobody wastes their time.
so i asked in the join game section, do i just wait until a DM lets me into the game or sum?
Did you make a post yourself or reply to someone else’s post?
reply
like, if you actually go to a DM and interview for their game, and are honest about wanting to contribute and not be ruinous, I bet they'd be much more amiable to helping you get to grips with the game
Then they’ll contact you if they want to extend an invite.
I would love to do that but i have no idea how to find a Dm who open slots??
help bro
just read #find-a-game and do what it says
re reading it brb
Many people don't read the instructions and ask "why can't I post in the channel" - it's because you use a command to make a bot post your game-ad/application
Replying to game ads is also a decent way to find games.
which books should you buy in ddb if you want to start a campaign?
Do you want to run a specific adventure or are you making it up yourself?
homebrew original
campaign
basically, the DMG and Monsters of the Multiverse will be great tools. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything is also full of great stuff for both Players and the DM.
The Player’s Handbook is also essential, if you want to not just stick with the free Basic Rules.
Well, and the Monster Manual for a decent amount of the basic/classic monsters too
i am looking for a discord vc dnd game to join where would i find one

You can add as many or as few personality traits as you like.

But if you’ve got any specific questions, ask away!
What do I put for faith, I know it's probably optional but what would I put?
Whatever god your character follows, which is going to depend on the setting the game takes place in.
oooh ok ok, if you don't mind, may I have some examples?
Of settings or gods?
gods
Here's a bunch: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Portal:Deities
Ones I've seen referenced in adventures I've run/played: Tymora, Lathander, Oghma, Umberlee, Lolth, and Tyr. That's just a handful, though.
ya, there's literally a ton of gods available for your character to worship
Ahhhh thank you 😭
I'm looking at the physical characteristics of Earth Genasi and as much as I want to follow it, can I tweak some things or do I have to stick with the description?
Which specific descriptions?
I mean always check with your DM but when I DM flavoring your characters is wonderful to me! You’re an earth genasi? Cool. What kind of minerals does your skin look like? Are you a fire genasi with obsidian colored skin and red eyes? If it doesn’t change the game I don’t see why not
Yea I choose earth genasi, I'm like super confused on what to put exactly for skin and hair on physical characteristics :/
If what you want to describe doesn’t change the character mechanically at all, then as your DM I would almost always say yes
Like if you wanted a bright pink skinned Tiefling I won’t say no but I will ask why lol
I wish I could be pink as a earth genasi but it wouldn't make sense, but bro it's literally my favorite color
Opal can be a pink gemstone
pink rocks exist
Boom pink Earth Genasi!
Anyways the description online says their skin color would be deep brown to black tones, but like skin texture wise I'm a little like lost
OH MY GOSH
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
That’s just flavour, you can make it what you want
What I’d do for skin texture is rough, rocky texture
It’s like choosing to be an Aarocockra and wanting to be a toucan one vs an eagle one
Maybe with big crystal protrusions
That would be so cool! I could literally picture my character with some crystal shards coming out of her shoulders and arms!
That’s a wonderful idea! I like it
I'm gonna cry (not literally) y'all are so much help 🥹
I love helping new people into the DnD Cult Community
Thank y'all so much, I'll do a small update when I finish and I'm ready for a campaign ❤️
I finally finished my character 😭 I'm ready to play now
any modules to try out as dnd begginners
Lost Mine of Phandelver is a great starter

Thank you. It wasn't on my channel list
Can someone help me make my character sheet
We can answer some questions as you go. I take it this is a practice character you're mking before you've joined a game?
Idk about “practice character” but yeah i haven’t played i game yet
Since a half elf can have 1+ to TWO other abilities,
Can i make it 2+ to ONE ability?
@solemn light
So for half elf you have these options:
Half-Elf standard: Your Charisma score increases by 2, and two other ability scores of your choice each increase by 1.
Tasha' Cauldron of everything rules: Use your standard rules but increase any, so in the case of half-elves +2 to one score, +1 to two other ability scores.
So using Tasha's rules, which many DMs allow but you will need to ask, you can add +2 to one ability instead of Charisma. The other +1 must be two other abilities.
So i put my ability scores in “saving throws” or the big vertical section?
Big verticle section
You can choose to put your scores (like 10, 13, 15, 9, 11, 16) in the big boxes or small boxes. There's two boxes in the verticle section so you can put your score (the full number) and your modifier (the number you get from your score to add to you abilities).
I'm not sure how you got that.
So should i write down +3 or be specific and write them separately
Is the +2 from Half-elf? Where did the +1 come from?
So it should just be +2. You must put the +1 bonues in other abilities
Ohhhhhh right
Half-Elf standard: Your Charisma score increases by 2, and two other ability scores of your choice each increase by 1.
Have you generated your ability scores yet?

Basically you buff your allies with it
Where should i write that
In the features section
Bardic Inspiration
You can inspire others through stirring words or music. To do so, you use a bonus action on your turn to choose one creature other than yourself within 60 feet of you who can hear you. That creature gains one Bardic Inspiration die, a d6.
Once within the next 10 minutes, the creature can roll the die and add the number rolled to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw it makes. The creature can wait until after it rolls the d20 before deciding to use the Bardic Inspiration die, but must decide before the DM says whether the roll succeeds or fails. Once the Bardic Inspiration die is rolled, it is lost. A creature can have only one Bardic Inspiration die at a time.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (a minimum of once). You regain any expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Your Bardic Inspiration die changes when you reach certain levels in this class. The die becomes a d8 at 5th level, a d10 at 10th level, and a d12 at 15th level.

Can you send me the link for a character sheet?
Oh, one second
Cause i printed one out and am writing on it physically. but i am not writing all that so i decided i’ll just do it online.
Thanks
Did you put in your starting equipment?
Ok
Scroll down and you should find the link for the download
One tip for physical sheets is to write down the main points of a feature and paraphrase it, and write down what page to find it on if you need to look up the full version.
Or just quickly look up the class on dndbeyond
I should do that for my too crowded online sheet
Have just a text file with all my features in full and "Buff stuff" "Debuff stuff" "very good at X"
in the character sheet
lol
I forgor what it's called tbh
Lemme check
If you're going online go for the one labelled "form fillable"
character sheet form fillable
Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V
Im on mobile
you tap on the blue stuff first before you type anything
Oh you might need a different app then
Blue stuff?
download adobe acrobat from google play store
Im on ios
Yeah they do
use that
Now for a the final few steps, your HP at level 1 is your hit dice number + your Constitution modifier
so 8+1
because bards have a d8 hitdice
You get starting equipment from both your background and your class
copy those over from the book
Hello!
Now Imma get going
o/
Noooooooooooo, I have to subscribe.
What else can i use
@wild onyx
@solemn light
Alternative to what?
Im trying to write my character sheet but im on mobile so the regular pdf doesn’t work so im trying to use adobe acrobat but i need to subscribe
What else can i do
You could use dndbeyond's character sheet app. Which also walks your through character creation or lets you put in things manually.
Getting abode is worth it though. Or continue using your printed out sheet.
I use gsheet
dunno if thatl help lol
Hey everyone looking to find a dnd group that's starting close to a new campaign on Sundays/Mondays depending when I have time
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
I've recently just got interested in dnd after seeing some friends play it and I want to join in on the fun
Find a game has instructions on how to use the LFG channels here so your post doesn't get drowned out in this channel.
You can post in #750812887697588356 or #looking-for-community and search #looking-for-players for games that might interest you.
No chance of joining in on their games or group?
Their in the middle of their campaign which sucks
Their going through some huge catacombs Rn and their really busy with it (the dnd campaign is about the underground)
I can’t seem to post in the find a game channel anyone have an idea why if you could help that would be very appreciated
Find a game channel isn't really for posting in, it's to give instructions on how to post in the Looking for X channels
No I mean I used to be able to do looking for players and now I lost the ability to
Oh right, i see what you mean sorry
You have the LFG active role.
It's stopping you from posting again.
Why

Hi ! I’m very new to DnD (absolute beginner) but also very new to this discord channel.
The above resources can help you get started on learning about the game, or finding a group, but of course you can ask questions here about things as they come up!
Thank you!
I printed out a character sheet and tried creating a character but I’m a bit confused about what goes in attacks & spell casting
If there are any DMs looking for a player that’s new but very excited and committed, please let me know because I’m looking to play with absolutely anyone !!
So those will be your most common attacks or spells that heal/do damage.
So what sort of weapon does your character have?
My character has a dagger and short sword
Okay and what is your characters Strength and Dexterity?
8 and 12
So luckily both dagger and shortsword are finesse weapons, which lets you use Dexterity instead of Strength for melee attacks if you want.
So you could put
Name: Dagger Attack bonus +3 Damage: 1d4 +1 piercing.
You have +3 to attack (+1 from 12 Dex, +2 from proficiency) and Daggers deal 1d4 and you get +1 damage from your Dex score.
Yes a short sword has different stats
Gotcha
Yep, as the damage will be different. The Attack bonus should be the same though.
And it's the same for any spells you have that you might use a lot.
Instead of Attack Bonus you might want to put in the DC of a spell if it's a DC save spell and not an attack spell.
Such as
Name: Vicious Mockery Attack Bonus: "13 DC" Damage: 1d4 psychic
Just anything you might use often to deal damage. Or even healing (Just put in 1d6 Healing in the 'damage' part)
Generally it's best to go through the features of your class and make sure you've put down what you've needed to and made any choices you need to.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#ClassFeatures
I don't know where you're at in your character creation. So go through the features you get as a level 1 bard (look at the class table as well to see what you have at level 1), and methodically go through them.
how do you plan a session? Like, the story line? do you make a vague outline for your players to follow?
Good question for #dm-discussion - this channel here is more for helping new to D&D folks get started with learning and understanding core game rules and mechanics.
So...I want to start playing dnd but seriously don't know where to start so can any one help me?

You don't need to learn all the rules before playing a game. Most will click into place as you play. But well worth looking into how to make a character and getting a general idea of how combat might work before you find a game.
ohok thanks
@azure geode
Remember we have the basic rules and guide here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
That goes through character creation and explains some details. Worth going through these steps to make sure you've got everything. Terms are usually explained in the basic rules or you can quickly google them like temporary hit points
One skill that is key to D&D is learning where to look things up when you have a question about it. If you get stuck on that, by all means ask, but try seeing if you can go through the guide first and figure some things out yourself.

Is there a way to facilitate a one player game? I want to DM a game for my buddy and we can never get a group together.
There are! It's a bit different, but doable.
On sites like DMsguild you can filter by 'Solo' or 'Single Player' - Some are literally just 1 person games, where as some are 1 DM & 1 Player (Often called Duets in the community- DMsguild hasn't yet seperated Solo from Duets in the filter).
You can also use normal prewritten adventures, but give your player Sidekicks to help bolster their party. Sidekick rules can be found in Tasha's or this old UA (playtest) that is similar.
It can but it's really, really bad at it
You don't get starting wealth if you've picked equipment
You just get equipment from Bard and from your background. Your background gives you some gold.
Oh ok
Starting Wealth by class is an optional rule your DM needs to allow. The basic rules do not cover starting wealth for classes outside of wizard/rogue/fighter/cleric as it only covers those classes. (The other free to use classes are in the SRD a different free to use document)
Your DM later may allow you to sell and buy equipment.
To begin with you get equipment as shown in your class: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#ClassFeatures
Follow the instructions in your class to pick your equipment
Weapon and armour proficiencies are different to skill proficiencies and saving throws.
As a bard you get:
Proficiencies
Armor: Light armor
Weapons: Simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, shortswords
Tools: Three musical instruments of your choice
Saving Throws: Dexterity, Charisma
Skills: Choose any three
As shown in the link I sent.
This is not the equipment you have. This is what equipment you are proficient with.
You do not get three instruments. Read that section again. What does it tell you can pick from the options?
Lute or any other instrument?
a) lute or b) any other instrument.
So you need to pick. A or B.
You can look these up in the Equipment section, that will be under 'packs'. All basic equipment that you can start with will be somewhere in that page.
I am new to this server. What channel would be good for someone looking for a intermediate 5e group ?
You'll need to go through the LFG channels

So you'll need to follow the instructions in find a game carefully, and can post to #750812887697588356 and search in #looking-for-players for a game that interests you.
👍
Should i choose rapier or sickle?
Have a look at the two different weapons. What are their damages?
Rapier is more
Also what play style are you looking for? Technically Rapier does more damage but it’s piercing is also finesse and Sickle is slashing with less damage not as finesse
Finesse?
It is, yep! But there's also more to consider here. So Rapier is 1d8 piercing and Sickle is 1d4 slashing. But also notice that Rapier has Finesse? Can you find out on that link under 'weapon properties' what Finesse is and does?
Ok!
Finesse
When making an attack with a finesse weapon, you use your choice of your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack and damage rolls. You must use the same modifier for both rolls.
I have +2 dexterity mod so u think it would still be better
Yep!
So with higher dex and proficiency with rapiers, Rapier definitely seems the better choice for you.
These are things to consider when picking weapons. Sickle might have been better for Rogues, because it's light so they can add sneak attack. But that's not a factor for your Bard, so rapier seems like the better choice.
But if something comes down to one or two points of difference in damage, don't be worried about just picking the 'cooler' option if you like it more.
So then you’d have an output of 1d8+2 piercing to start for bard… Elgate beat me to the explanation as to why that’s better.
Ok, thanks guys!
What can i do with the different instruments
I mean like, whats the difference between the lute and the viola or smth
They're all the same for bards really, it's more for flavour. Do you want a lute, or a drum, or a flute so on
Oh ok
But if you check your class abilities under spell casting: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#ClassFeatures
You can see you can use musical instruments as a spell casting focus.
I’m personally partial to the flute when not using a magical instrument. Easier to hold and travel with, also great for gesticulating.
These rules help explain what a spellcasting focus is and does: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Components
I wanna know more about the celestial, what section is it in?
For languages?
No the being
Hello. I am totally new to this D&D thing. I started to play BG3 and discovered that it is based upon D&D. So i started to dig into that to understand how it all works.
I know zero people who play this game since i am older
Making a character sheet is a good start
Then learning the rules
Are u on pc or mobile?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

I am on PC
Press on d&d beyond and find the character sheet
Its a pdf
Choose 5th edition
And tell me when u have the pdf
I downloaded and bought the players guide to work my way through. A lot there. I am slowly connecting the dots when playing BG3
Basic Rules for Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Fifth Edition (5e) - D&D Beyond
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
Celestial is a creature type. They are beings that come from the higher good aligned planes.
And press the link to look through the races
My guess is that BG3 is going to mae D&D a lot more popular
If D&D beyond for online games?
I think its just a official website they put all the links and products of theirs on and for the community to come together
Dnd beyond is a way to host campaigns
Some folks use DDB for in-person games for the convenience of having info quickly accessible.
i use it and import the characters into foundry while hosting via a virtual tabletop
How do you create a virtual tabletop?
these are bought or free to use softwares in my case foundry costs a one time fee
Rather a licence
so to speak
So is everyone in the same physical place or remote?
I use DDB, Avrae, and Discord Text games when I play. I have. A very long running group using these tools to play.
When I do more virtual stuff I like Roll20 and use DDB.
remote in this case
which got more popular due to corona beign a thing but it also has pros and cons
I personally simply prefer digital currently
I love all different ways of playing. Text games (or play by post) are convenient for me due to by busy life and kids.
Virtual games are less convenient but more convenient than in person games
And in person games just have this energy about them that’s fun
I use virtual games so i can spoil my players with high detail maps/intros and etc. but also gives me the freedom to have a clear field of view what is happening and who is distance of view and stuff like that
K
Since my goal is simply to let people dive into a magical world and make em forget about the boring real world
It's your Ability Modifier + Proficiency Bonus. Similar to how you calculate skills.
Oh ok
So, which two saves are you proficient with as a bard?
Yep, so they get your Prof bonus added. Everything else is just your ability modifier.
So what would you put into Charisma Save?
5?
Yep!
Ok thanks!
I have starting leather armor so i should put light as my armor class right?
Hi I’ve been really interested in playing dnd or something of the sorts and just wanted to know where a good place to start and or read up on it would be

You're proficient with light armour, but light armour is a category, not actually an armour. Your AC is calculated by what armour you're wearing and your Dex bonus.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArmorandShields
Try and find leather armour in here and what base AC it gives you.
Yep!
Ok nice 👌
It doesnt say whats my speed?
It just say the different ones and what impact they have
Your speed is determined by your race.
?
Oh ok
