If you have questions about the basics of the game rules and how to play, you can ask them in this channel. If you want help making your character, #character-discussion would be the channel to do so in
how do i play a bard
i am a bard right know
and if never used my spells only fighting with my sword
i am new i am looking for a online capain
what kind of bard are you playing? Like what subclass did you end up picking, if any yet?
college of swords
you can either look for groups to join in #looking-for-players or look for a dm if u have a party already in #750812887697588356
ah, then you're doing mostly what that school is meant for. They tend to rely more on the fighting aspect than thr magic aspect, but the spells tend to be able to boost yourself/your allies for bard
that the entire thing about bardic inspiration, its meant to either be support for you or more likely your tanky player
yea my party keeps bugging me for me to use spells but is just dont know how
well what spells do you have rn?
i dont know thats the thing
bard is one of the classes that mixes fighting and magic, so you should ideally be using ur spells
did you make ur character sheet on dnd beyond or something?
if so you should have spells listed to pick from it makes it a lot easier
where do i see it
ah i see the issue. you havent picked any
ok so when you're in the character editor/creator, under the class section where you pick your class level stuff
there should be another subtab called 'spells'
the 'known spells' will be empty, and then theres another drop down on spells you can learn
hmmmmm are you wanting to have some healing, boosting, attack spels
hmmm let me look at the spells youd know rq
can a add you btw
sure!
so if youre wanting to focus on mostly boosting and charming and attacking, i'd recc this as your spells, or at least its what i run for swords:
cantrips: thunderclap, viscous mockery
1st level: thunderwave, healing word (its always good to have one way to heal yourself/others) but you could replace it for something else like hideous laughter or bane, and charm person
2nd level: shatter and cloud of daggers of hold person depending on if your wanting more raw attack power vs taking people on one by one.
Most of bard's early damage spells are gonna be AOE, so just keep that in mind when being near other players in combat :)
area of effect, aka it can possibly hit multiple enemies at once, but it also can hit your teammates as well unless you have specific items or specific subclasses
ok thank you
npnp!
Is there anyway to find a campaign online that's not through dnd beyond/genq
Sure. Not everyone uses DDB.
Yeah, just look for one that doesnt use DDB.
I mean here though
Same applies, not everyone here uses DDB
Yeah, just look in #find-a-game for the games not using DDB.
How do I submit a post as a dm?

Nice! Well check id:browse to see all the many channels we have dedicated to different topics related to D&D.

Look forward to getting to know yall soon
Hello there
Welcome!
Hello
Ok. If you're more of an online player, all you'd need really is a way to make a character sheet (dnd beyond is great for newcomers.) And for dice, it really varies from dm to dm but depending, you can technically roll from discord or a virtual tabletop (vtt for short)
Not really
Every game of D&D is a world of its own.
Any official lore may or may not even apply.
Your DM will tell you the things you need to know.
How much time does one dnd session takes?
Ah thanks
I have 3 characters ready to go lol
Hey guys I’m new here
Hello Dr salt so am i
I'm just here to join a DND group so I'm not bored 24/7 everyday yk
I see
I came cuz I saw someone play a heavily simplified version of the game and I thought why not try it myself?
I see
I’m barbarian what role are you?
Wizard
Noice
Yur
Have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages for this channel
Ok then I’ll check it out!
does anyone use table top sim for d&d here?
Some do, but I don’t think it’s a very common choice.
There’s much better dedicated options
like roll20?
Such as roll 20, foundry vtt, and owlbear.rodeo
Yeah that’s one very popular option
me and my friend are very interested in playing d&d but we need a lot of help lol
i tried roll20
Have you read the basic rules?
Roll20 is just a VTT (virtual tabletop)
are the rules posted on roll20?

No, they’re on the dnd beyond website

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.

Hehehe hi sorry if this is a dumb question. IN GENERAL, would it be silly for me to spend a lot of time creating a character with a specific kind of race that may not naturally inhabit a number of realms? For example, a Satyr, which would more or less exist in one plane of existence based on D&D mechanics...
In your experience, is it likely that a DM would be willing to work around the origin of a specific race like this?
Or is it normally something where a campaign is crafted before character customization, and that I should be building my character based on the chosen locale?
Generally the latter
Oh poops. Okay thank you!
never played dnd before
Have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages of this channel
why is it so hard to find a group? 😩 😂
People don't think it be like it be, but it do
Yeah finding groups is difficult
I have three active games and it's all within one friend group
it do in fact be like it is
So, just keep trying. You've got your timezone and desires, that's basically the factor for LFG.
just
Can you attend
Do you want to attend
is it worth paying for a dm?
A highly debated topic. My personal opinion is not exactly but I don't have enough experience in that for a pedigree in it
well lmk if any room opens up in your games, its a struggle out here for us peeps with no group 😂
Are you just looking here?
Where else is can we look?
everywhere really
other discords
other social media
local places
r/lfg on reddit, the looking for groups on individual platforms like Roll20, facebook and meetup.com for local groups.
Even on other D&D discord servers as advertised in #looking-for-community
Find a pre written one shot
You could try Intro to Stormwreck Isle, which leads into the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle starter set.
There’s Frozen Sick — a good choice if there’s any Critical Role fans in the group.
Some free ones on DMsguild too
So uh if a fiend dies in nine hells do they die for good?
that's a #dnd-lore not a #dnd-newcomers one
Oh thanks, my bad ^^
s'all good
When you make your character, how do you vary the points for like strengths, dexterity and stuff
Depend on the class you want to play and what equipment you want to use and what skills you want to focus on
Ok thanks
IE you want to make a ranger who uses light armour and a bow you would need dex mainly then wisdom for your spells and I’d say you wanted them to be good at talking to people some charisma would help
omg why are their so many books and why are they so expensive? aaaaaaaa
ik i don't need all of them but aaaaaaaaa
There are 'so many' because this edition has been out almost 10 years (there are actually fewer books per year than previous edition)
They cost so much because TTRPGs are expensive to develop and publish
And no, you do not need all of them
You don't "need" any of them, you can get started with the free Basic Rules
For additions to the basic rules I would recommand tasha's cauldron of everything and xanathar's guide to everything if you want more, they're both very well made books
But as davyd said they're both optionnal and are just expansions
noted, thank u ;-;
If you join a table the DM often shares their books with their players (whether physical if you play in person or digital if you play online).

Hey guys, how does your wealth level (like wretched, poor, comfortable) affect your character
Mechanically it has little to no effect. It's more of a roleplay guideline for what kind of lifestyle your character prefers and tries to achieve, and provides a "general cost of living" cost associated with that lifestyle.
That is purely a role play/ social aspect.
DMs could use it as a guide of how much it costs to travel 1-2 weeks within a world without actually role playing every single day - but yeah, mostly for roleplaying.
Ic, thx
Hi everybody. I need some help. My friend is throwing small birthday party, just 6ppl plus me, and he wanted me to lead dnd oneshot. I have never done anything like this, tho I read dnd starter set manual and listened to some dnd podcasts. What should I do? We are all polish speaking and have about 5-6h of playtime. Party is in a week. (Also, only one of them ever have played dnd but he knows rules very briefly)
Find a nice beginner friendly one-shot adventure, read it and put together a rough plan of how to run it. Maybe make some pregenerated characters for the party to use (so no time wasted figuring out how to make a character). Make sure to have dice to roll (physical or digital). Also check in with the nice fellow DMs in #dm-discussion.
Thx, do you know where can I find those oneshots? Don't know if you can reffer any free ones on official server...
Here's one that might work well: https://winghornpress.com/adventures/a-wild-sheep-chase/
Also there are some free adventures on DnDBeyond.
Oh right, thanks again
And my number one tip is to focus on fun!
Making a custom character sheet for my newer players and am not sure of what an "Ability Save DC" that is on the DNDBeyond character sheet is? What's it for? Is it just something for monk?
So a monk feature that requires the targetd creature to make a saving throw based on whatever ability score the monk is using to use that feature.
What's the feature's name? I'd need to look at it to better understand what you're discussing.
Above Speed on the 1st page of the dndbeyond pdf character sheet is a section called Ability Save DC and I want to know what it is used for
I am looking at a monk character sheet on DnDBeyond (web browser) and I am not seeing an Ability Save DC under the Speed field. I am unsure of what you're referring to.
You can link the character page on D&D Beyond.
Some character sheets get an ability save dc field above the speed section and I'm not sure what it's for is the question
Okay I see what you're saying
I think this is used when the character has a particular feature (like battle master fighters) and they use a certain feature against a target, and the target must make a saving throw. This field provides info on what kind of saving throw the targeted creature needs to make and what the DC is to avoid/reduce the effect of that feature.
So very niche stuff basically
Well... just very specific class features
Yeah that's moreso what I mean
then yes
Filling out the last portion of my beginner friendly 1st page and was just double checking if the ability save dc is that important compared to putting something like alignment in its stead
Hello
welcome!
yeah - we do that to help keep the scammers and spammers at bay
it was a hassle cause I had an account I made ages ago with the phone still attached, so I just gave up after a while, but Its sorted now obviously
Whats recommended for a good character?
Never played before
Have you read the basic rules?
Well my number one tip for good characters is to just play something that sounds fun for you and works well for the type of D&D game you're playing in (and works well with the rest of the group). Beyond that, you can check with folks in #character-discussion and #optimization (focussed on applying math to make numbers better).
And we do have some useful resources linked in the pinned messages to help get you started with D&D
Appreciated 🙏🏻
yea
Pick a class you find interesting, go from there
Hi ya'll Im new. I'd like to play tonight. Any groups I can join and do yall have any guidance/tips?
I'm about to start Stormwreck Isle and I've made a light cleric and a rogue and just can't make up my mind on which to play. Anyone want to convince me of one over the other? The rest of the party will be a paladin, a ranged fighter, a wizard and a warlock.
I'd highly recommend that if you're new to D&D to spend some time reading through the free basic rules - most groups are fine with new to D&D players but they won't like having to teach everythign from scratch. Much better to show up having at least some idea of the terminology and core game mechanics. See the pinned messgaes here in the channel for some useful links/resources to help get you started. Then when you're ready to find a group/game to join, read #find-a-game carefully as it will explain how to use our LFG channels here on this server. But you can also look for games elsewhere as well - spread your search net wide for better results.
Flip a coin and let it decide?
Rogue will be easier to play, but it’s your choice
If I can pick four books for starting players what would you recommend
I’m new to the dnd and I want to know
Players Handbook, Xanathar's Guide, and Tasha's Cauldron books are good for players
I thinking of getting xanather guide to everything, monster manual dungeon master and player handbook
Are you wanting just player focussed? Or do you want a good base that can be used generally by a group to play D&D?
If you’re not dming, don’t get the monster manual, and the dmg isn’t very important
I would also recommend TCOE over XGTE for a player, as XGTE is slightly more dm facing
But getting both is a good option
i am so lost here 😅

ive been reading it but still a bit lost, ill get there eventually
I’ve been hearing about a lot of this Druid and other types of things what are they? Most of them are self explanatory.
Could you specify what the things you’ve heard about are?
ok so i have been look at thing for dnd and i see a race called Aasimar is like a race i can play or what is it
It’s a race option
oh ok so like what are they i know there a falling and not falling
ohhh that super cool
Don’t judge but things like Druid, warlock, and other fancy ways to call creatures
They’re different classes
Druids are like nature-y spellcasters
Warlocks are spellcasters whose magic comes from a pact with a powerful being (not a god)
Oh cool
hey im new to dnd and i dont know how to play does anyone have a session for new players?

Help meeeeeee
Idk what to do😭😭😭
Haha I don’t know if I’m the best person, that was my first game ever! 😂
Did you play online or in person
In person.
I need to find someone to play with online cause I'm bored af rn

Ok ty its much better for me lol
That said, at some level, D&D rules will need to be read to a degree so you understand the terminology and core mechanics
Oh well, there is nothing i can do
Don't feel like you have to memorize it though!
you can always make a lil cheat sheet with your DM so you know what abilities you can use
and it would be easier to read than a wall of text, most of the time
Had my first DM experience this morning! My wife and son seemed to enjoy it!
I wont,and cant
Oh ty
But the problem is,i wanna be a dm
Oh well, i guess i actually dont and that feeling is a lie(im getting mysleft to not be dm,cuz i cant i just cant)
there are some DMs who write down nothing for their sessions, but generally speaking, you'd need to jot down a few things here and there
Then you'll need to know the rules more than a player would
The rules provide the framework for playing D&D.
But again, even as a DM and having played this game for years, I still don't know everything and I sure don't have everything memorized!
I will not be dm
You do you. We're here if you'd like any help.
Nah staying as a player is better for me,i do want to wacth my friends suffer, but in another game.
Omg, I'm too nervous. English is not my first language, but easier to find someone to first game here, I think
If you're trying to find a group/game to join, we have several LFG (Looking for Game) channels:
#looking-for-players - folks who need players for their games
#looking-for-community - other D&D servers that may have games, looking for more members
#paid-looking-for-game - paid games (e.g. players pay the DM a fee)
Also you can read #find-a-game to learn more about how to find games and instructions on how to use our LFG channels.
Ty for everything
No problem! If you have any new-to-D&D questions, you can ask here or in an appropriate channel here on the server (see id:browse to see all of our many channels)
The people here are chill, right?cuz some might not like newbies...
Thanks!
Most groups are fine with new-to-D&D players if 1) the player is making a good effort to learn the rules 2) vibes well with the rest of the players/DM playing the game.
Age range and timezones can also influence how likely you'll get into a group's game - too much age difference from the rest of the group can make it hard to vibe well with them and timezones can make the already hard challenge of scheduling even more difficult.
But generally most folks are fine with newbies
Ok,thanks.I will be careful about that.
Nice,i think i can play my first game in a fre hours
few*
Where can I go to find a game?
check out #find-a-game if you want to try your luck on this server.
otherwise, there are for example roll20.net, /lfg on reddit or if you prefer IRL, try your local game store or friends/family
99% of my rp has been done online (the 1% is just random rps i did at school when i was a kid) so i dont really know how dnd works in person. do players just roll die and talk about what theyll do?
Essentially
It works in 4 parts:
- The player asks the Dm to do something
- Dm will choose what skill to roll that fits the asked action
- Player will roll the dice and add the modifier to the roll where relevant
- Dm interprets the roll and explains what happens
how will the players get immersed then
does the dm like prepare pictures n stuff like that
Not typically? I can’t really commentate on how DMs handle immersion as it’s completely unique to every Dm
Immersion comes not from the rolls but the results imo
Yes you may be rolling dice to see how it works, but those dice rolls are helping to tell a story
my rps usually involve images to immerse players
And most people don’t remember what they rolled, but what happened
Which is how you remember the story
Immersion can come in many different ways
Pictures, music, maps, physical scrolls of lore
depends on the group.
the minimalistic approach would be paper sheets, dice, pen and everything in game happens in theater of the mind.
but you can use laptops, miniatures, printed maps or maps on a screen, music, digital sheets on a tablet etc. there are few limits here
Can I ask I’m very new to D&D, but I recently bought from my local bookstore tasha cauldron and Xanathers guide to everything as well as the player and dungeons masters handbook as well as a dm screen and a set of dice for $100, was it worth it?
All of it is brand new or just opened
all of that combined for 100 bucks? seems like a decent deal
The person I bought it from owns a bookstore and so I wanted to help local business as well he seem seemed nice and understanding and told me to buy this set if i wanted to start dnd
Yeah that’s a steal for hardback copies, a screen, and dice.
See if you can play your games at the shop as a way of thanks 👀
Sadly, he lives too far away for me too play at his book shop so I just asked him to ship it
Can I also ask the books that he recommended me? Are they the best for new players?
Playerhandbook and tasha's are very often recommended for new players, yep.
They have all the base content, plus great expansions on the rules, classes, magic items and so on.
What about the xanathars guide and the DM handbook?
The dungeon master's handbook can be a little more niche, but has great advice for making your own campaign, some rule explanations, and all the magic items. So that set is a pretty good set for starting out.
Oh sorry, Mixed up Xanathar and tashas- both are recommended.
Xanathar's is a little like a PHB/DMG 2.0 and Tasha's like a PHB/DMG 3.0
well the DMG is pretty much only useful for DMs, but xanathars is also recommended
So Xanathar + PHB is a good combo.
What other books should I get when i stop being a novice
You can do well with just those for now. If you want monster stats, there are plenty free in the SRD.
If you ever do want to expand your collection, Tasha's is pretty great for the reasons above, and Mordenkain Present Monster of the Multiverse has the updated monsters and races for players to use. (And is like a Monster Manual 2.0 and has options from some now 'legacy' books like Volo's Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes)
For now, wanting to play, it's more considering if you want to make your own homebrew campaign (the DMG has some advice on this), or to run a prewritten module. You can find some free ones to use online or purchase one.
Honestly, I think I’m not going to start the dming for a while probably after a year or two
I don’t wanna be the novice DM
As a player then, you've probably got the starting books you need, but honestly DMing is fun and you can just jump into it. Someone's gotta be the DM for the group, but you can see if there are any groups around with DMs already.
It's also common for groups to share books with each other. If you get a group together, you might all decide to chip in to get an adventure book for the DM to run or so on, or just share any books you already own.
Personally I like to own the books I have that’s also why I don’t just buy the online copies because I’m scared one day. They’re just going to remove it.
Also, will my books ever be outdated like Will there be a point there’s going to be sixth edition
there is going to be a remaster of 5e next year, which will be mostly backwards compatible
How long do you think my books will last before they become outdated?
there might be a 6e at some point, but that isnt going to be anytime soon.
but also, older editions of the game are still being played
if you find people to play with you with these rules, then those books will never be outdated
never
and while the playerbase of older editions is smaller, they are still being played by a lot of people
I can barely find people playing this game, how much more if it becomes outdated
Every time I try to find a group here or somewhere else they either ghost me or they live in a different time zone
Don't fuss about timezones. Just look at when you're available (and maybe a world clock).
How do I find parties to play d and d
Because most of my friends either don’t know how to play d and d or just doesn’t want to play.
I'm looking for people too 🙂
So far it is just me and my husband

Thx dude/dudette
very much welcome
You aswell over there
new here, and new to dnd, but want to find someone to start with ❤️
we do have a lovely community around here
You can search here #750812887697588356 #find-a-game
hello everyone! im very new to dnd and am struggling really bad trying to process the rules of the game. if there are any resources or explanations anyone can provide please let me know <33
Thank you Fine in a traveller
there are lots of content creators on yt. my personal recommendation is the crap guide to dnd from jocat
thank you!! i will check them out for sure <33
I dunno if that one’s the most educational, but it’s very funny. :P
Hi guys, I'm new to these type's of games and I'm wondering if i can start looking for a party after watching a few you tube videos about rules and the like, or would it be better to go out and buy an actual rule book?
Read the basic rules and I would suggest watch a few YouTube videos because they can give you some examples and can like simplify how to play
Also very much welcome to our chaotic little world
thank you very much. so the checklist would be: Know basic rules thru vids + how to make a character sheet + have Roll20 to actually play?
that varies on dm
I myself use foundry vtt
to host my games but there are lots of these vtts out there
That is about right. But I would suggest read rules first (they are sometimes confusing, and if so then watch some vids about d and d).
Decided to make a lore college bard any suggestions on spells?
Tasha’s hideous laughter 😆 🤣😂😆🥸 why can’t I stop laughing!
what would be the advantages of foundry vtt compared to something like roll20? or is it more personal preference?
uh oh
Foundry is a one off cost and has a lot more customisability IMO
Whereas Roll20 is free as a base option, but if you want anything special you have to subscribe and pay monthly.
Ultimately its personal preference.
So many damaging spells so few enemy’s
well what level is your bard
probably 6 since lore
yeah
oh wait nvm
well maybe idk it isnt mentioned but i dont think fireball is on the bard spell list so
i dont play bard much so thats why i asked so i could check
ngl i don't even know how to play dnd properly yet i joined

^ yes stuff like this
it's more about all the stats, they seem overwhelming. So will def check it out
So I just barely set up a
beyond account, and created a character and all that, so now all I have to do is find a session to play, and I have no idea how to do that (I'm brand new)

Both are linked above.
is there any better way of finding a d&d game then Discord or Reddit i keep getting ghosted or they never start the campaign or i am told I'm too young to play d&d
Check out iamrazorwing's guide to finding games online:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
the nearest bookstore that has d&d games is like 5 hours drive
Library, school club?
I genuinely don't think anyone in my school has any interest besides Fortnite and or having sex because it is all they talk about
the only club that isn't a sport is chess club
i really want to play d&d but everyone is either a different time zone or they only allow 18+ players
Then you have to keep looking for online options.
may i ask
how can you tell if the group will actually play or if they will never even have a session zero?
Finding a group to play with is like dating. There will be no shows, drama, ghosting, etc. It's like any other relationship with people.
ok
Keep looking. I'll be honest and it may take you days, weeks, or months to find a group to play with. This is because there are waaaaaaay more players than DMs.
im a very new player if i can't seem to find dnd group maybe ill just make my own
There you go.
are paid games better than non paid games
not necessarily but potentially due to players probably showing up cause they paid and also the dm might put in more work cause theyre not working for free but there are no guarentees
Money will guarentee that players will show up.
That's not 100% true. Some people will pay and not show up - for a million reasons.
quick question, I've been making a character for the first time and noticed a lot of things on the official DnD site (like backstory's) are part of books that I would need to buy. Would it be easier if I a made a DnD beyond account or not?
Hello, first time dwelving in D&D, hope we get along

yay
How do spells with a casting time of 1 action work? Does it mean i have to use an entire turn to cast it and then wait for my turn again to use it?
Yes - you use your action to cast the spell. Spell effects generally happen the same instant/turn of their casting unless they state otherwise.
you spend 1 action to cast them. you can do your other stuff as normal, like move, bonus action, object interaction.
the spell goes immediately in effect, no waiting for your next turn
sick, thanks
yayyyy the links help ^^
hello all
im a complete newbie to DnD i was wondering if i can get help with the character creation

After come back with specific questions
Hello! I'm new here ^^
Welcome !
Have a look at the resources linked in the bot post a few messages up
My husband and i are extremely new to DND. dont even have characters yet. we are looking for discord groups to join to meet new people to help teach us and we can play the game with online
Scroll up, check out the materials in the bot post above
Thank you!
Joining my first campaign tomorrow! I played with a group in uni but it's been ten years... spent the weekend developing my character and I'm so excited!
I have read and watched about rules of d and d (I’m still lacking at some parts) so I am now looking for parties to play d and d with, where can I look?
I got a couple of questions
1 I need an excuse to name my dragonborn acha. Any ideas for excuses?
2 Does food cooked by bards that went to the school of flavors heal?
Both of those are probably discussions you'd want to have with your DM.
I'm not sure why you'd need an excuse to use any particular name, though.
But for the latter, there's a feat called Chef that lets you cook healing food.
Or you could potentially cast a healing spell and simply describe it as your bard feeding them.
I just want my dragon born to be named sir acha (sirracha)
You don’t need an excuse for that
how do you know if the campaigns are beginner friendly? ive got a little xoerience but would feel comfortable in something that's nice to new players
If it isn't explicitly advertised as beginner friendly, you can always just ask.
true, guess i'm just a little awkward
I feel like im too awkward to join a campaign low key
same, i'm trying to put myself out there but the lack of responses is a lil demotivating too 😅
Hello! I am new to D&D and have only seen stories of it and wanna play myself for the first time!
I also don’t enjoy voice chatting but I know a lot of discord based games are VC, I rarely see text based games 😭
I don't really wanna do vc anyways for when I do my games
Y'all I have no idea what to do I literally just started getting in to dnd tonight
Yeah
I’ve been into the idea of playing dnd for a little over 2 years now but since I’m so awkward, I NEVER actually played a game of it
i'm happy to do vc, cam if it's even required. i got a few characters too but it's just finding a group to join that's the struggle
There's one person that asked me if I was into dnd and I wasn't at the time. But today, I wanna play
@wise pasture wanna try to be in a dnd group?
Yeah sure
I have no idea what to do
let's play
Ok
You should check out the pinned messages in this channel for tips on how to play. It's super helpful for new players!
Soooo....
so
Idk

same question
y'all will need a dm to create the story and host the campaign
I have no idea how to do that
Ok so we need to add each other to make it?
The DM they mean is like the storyteller/leader of the group, idk how to explain it
Oh
Oh
Oh
The master
I don't want to be the dm
The DUNGEON MASTER yes 😭 idk why I forgot the name momentarily
me neither
I just wanna play
yes
Bobbi the master
dungeon master. they basically tell the story, play the bad guys you combat, voice the npcs and help the story progress
I know that
You kinda just have to look in the “looking for players” unless you’re able to request for one and I can’t be a dungeon master, I prefer being the player 😭
Being a dungeon master seems so daunting 🧍🏻♀️
Yeah that seems cool but I would rather be the player
Dang
was just tryna be helpful 🤷♀️
Thanks dingus
I know.
me too
Wanna be the master Dingus?
no experience in it
Ok
😮💨
Y’all can also look through “looking for community” which is essentially discord servers that are based around the RP aspect of it, most of them are text and VC
I enabled find dm
I tried that but when I joined one I was to young for it
Some are 18+, some are 13+, you just gotta find ones that don’t say 18+ if you’re younger than 18
18+
Ya I'm too young
Same
Because the one I’m in, you don’t need to be 18
I'll for in the 13 plus tho
I might be able to do the 13+
You aren’t allowed to share your age in this server
Also I would recommend reading the basic rules linked in the pinned messages of this channel before jumping into it
ah, my bad
I thought it was just private information like credit card and other stuff. Not age
They consider that private information
Oh ok
ha, great name
I noticed that to
We could just start one
But how
Just make a server with us in it
im in
I guess group chat
We would still have to figure out the dm problem, since nobody wants to be it
lol
Hey dingus, wanna play?
Welcome to the problem of why people have trouble finding a group to play with — there are waaaay more players than DMs.
Lol
@cobalt frigate wanna be our dm
No because I don't know any of you. I only DM friends and (ex) coworkers.
so uhm i was wondering if it was possible to do dnd online and if so how would i get into it im completely new to dnd i know little to nothing and i also dont really have anyone to play it with so i would also need help with that
hello
Hello I'm new to dnd as well, i have a little group of 3 people and we could help, and if you don't want to join or don't find us helpful you can look at the stuff in this group
uhm yeah i would be fine with uhm what would i need to do?
?tag new online
To join?
Idk we are new (I'm one of the 3)
Have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages of this channel
If so nothing I can just add you to the group
But if you want to make your character you can download an app called dnd beyond
It’s very helpful to read the rules before trying to make a character
me to maybe?
Yeah give me a sec
hey, I'm kind of new to D&D and this server. can anyone get me into a campaign of some sort so I can get experience?
Have you read the basic rules?
yes
thanks
where are the rules???
under #dnd-newcomers
The basic rules are linked in the pinned messages in this channel
@lyric fjord I'mma add you
so uhm i read the articles in pinned and read the rules is there anything else that i need to do before i try joining a campaign?
Maybe make a practice character
practice character?
Make a character to practice the process
oh alright i think ive already done that i know that ive made a character before once or twice before
im looking for a dm anyone interested for dnd beyond
hey
me and blur
are looking for dm master to play with
and learn how to navigate and play with dnd beyond
dm if u want to play tg.
i am not alloud
to message in that.
why is that
No one can send messages there. You need to use the bot command as explained in #find-a-game
You can also reply to posts using the threads under them in #looking-for-players
Ngl i just bought the starter kit the other day and I don't have anyone to play it with rn, is it possible to play solo?
no, but you can play with people online
Ok
D&D is a collaborative group game not a solo game.
The least you can pay it with is 2 people, but usually you want a dm and 4+ players
welcome
i have no idea what i am doing

to much info i need to know i just need to be in a call with someone explaining i am bad with this kind of stuff
D&D is a game of rules. Eventually you have to read the rules.
You can watch the "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos (link above)
to much time
Well, perhaps D&D isn't for you if you're not willing to invest in learning the game.
i mean it is better for me to lern from someone in a call bc it help me focus bc i get side tracked easy and if i am watching youtob video and i see something else that seems more entreating even if i am watching the stuff i usually watch
Hello
ello
Well, there are dozens of new people joining this server every day so we can't give private tutorials (there are also no VC channels here).
oh
ok i see i will try and find someone
I’d really love to make a DND campaign with the a certain concept but I don’t really wanna be a DM
Hello
Well, to be honest most DMs would rather run their own homebrew campaign rather use someone else's homebrew one.
I see I see
Well there are also DMs that use pre-made adventures, so it's also not unreasonable. Making a homebrew adventure for someone else to use is basically the same thing
I guess the only weird part about it is having the creator of the adventure, who knows everything about the adventure in said adventure 🤔
It’s more like
I want to find a DM, give them the general world idea and concept.
And then allow them to build said world
Why they want to take your idea and do all the leg work when they can use their own idea?
Well it’s a unique sci fi idea that they could build upon that’s all
Ah yeah in that case might be a lot harder
And what if they take your idea then change it beyond what you want?
I’d like to be surprised
Also dnd doesn’t work great for sci-fi
So again, why should a DM take your idea and do the legwork?
There’s much better systems for that kind of thing
But the basic idea is
It’s a world where a giant space planet tower is at the center of several planets
What’s that?
If there's a genre, there's a TTRPG for it.
I’m sorry I’m new to this
I feel this is getting beyond this channel though 😛
Sorry!
I feel like it's appropriate though - at its core, DND 5e is fundamentally built on heroic fantasy.
Makes me sad how difficult it can be to find a group
Run a few one shots. Ask the players you vibe with back for a campaign.
Oh
If you want to play that is a bit more difficult. Try matt colville or critical role. They have communities where it's pretty easy to get into a group
I remember a while ago joining this server and Oldmanyellingatclouds was the member that frequented the channels
Lol he still is
Heyo
Hello
Hi
First DnD server ever. 😅 I just recently started to get interested in it honestly. Also watched the Vox Machina show so that kinda helped make it even more interesting.
i'm getting a bit time for myself so i joined to look for a game
😓 so far not good bc of the time difference
I just started getting interested in dnd but I barely know anything about it 🥲
Are we allowed to ask what time zones were in? State and that sorta thing anyway?
yes ofc
I’m in CST MS
like, that's how you decide to join a game or not tbh. if a game holds their session at 1AM then naurr
I'm GMT+7, yep and that sums up my situation lol
Ahhh I see but I haven’t seen anything close to me either I’ve googled and googled
yes, but specific personal info is a no on soliciting or providing, on this server
yep yep
So, for all of you newcomers, welcome

I have never played DND before, i know absolutely nothing but I wanna give it a go because i heard u can make friends and dnd seems interesting to get into
Thank you it is appreciated
In need of friends for sure 😂
Take a gander at the basic rules and feel free to ask questions
I would say we have the beginnings of a group right here but time zones seem to be an issue and I uh really would like to do my first game in person being new and not knowing what I’m doing lol
For example, an Attack is a discrete thing in the rules - so casting Burning Hands (basically a mini-flamethrower) isn't an attack.
Some things can end up a little quirky to understand
I’m Autistic I wouldn’t feel comfortable meeting in person the first time anyway
Understood
It would be cool to do it in person but that’s gonna be a lot harder to find people to play with. Vc is the best way to go about it I think
I wouldn’t mind learning it, i have dice but I’ve never used them
I've played 1 game before
You just get that old fashioned feeling in person or I guess I’ve watched too much YouTube on people playing together
And that's it, so still veri green veri new
lol same
I’m so green I haven’t even sprouted yet
🪴
Pretty sure you can just roll on an app or something right ?
but tbh, I can buy the dice if I find an offline campaign, but that's far from reach for me
I have all these awesome ideas but no friends 🥲
combat who?
What kind of writing do you like ?
Even if you do, chances are that they aren't interested in dnd tho
What do you mean?
Exactly
hugz
We four shall be comrades now 😂
Yea my friends aren’t the dnd type at all
Yes, there's many methods. Many virtual tabletops will have dice tools, DNDBeyond lets you roll your character sheet's stuff in it, and the Avrae discord bot can roll dice (as can some other bots)
That, and phone apps
Comrade Lagging 🫡
I would ask them to just read the basic rules and then wip out a total disastrous game that I DM tbh, i don't need much lol
but sadly
not a single soul wants to join
Comrade Xeno🤌🏼
I would
We could lowk set something up and throw it all together and have a mess of a game 😂
Hello I am new here
hello
Hello
Heyo
New to this server, or new to D&D?
Hey guys, I recently got interested in dnd and I want to learn how to play so I’ve been reading the guide/rules but i can’t properly understand it cuz there’s a lot, can someone help me out
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

Thanks I’ll check it out
i would
Finding the true table to have eternal fun is usually hard to find
patience is the key and while finding that one table make friends on other tables !
Aye
My example here is as dm i currently handle 3 tables of different kinds of players and each one has special place in my heart
It's good to enjoy all things in this game
Hellow, im new here 🙂
Welcome
Very much welcome have a ale !
thank you, im still new to dnd but i saw some videos and it seems a lot of fun
If questions appear ask around
im watching the handbooker helper from critical role rn haha
Nice that helped me a lot too
Especially when trying to figure out advantage and disadvantage
the most confusing thing is making a good character haha i have an idea of what i want but there are a lot of subclases and options, etc so its hard to keep track of them
very good stuff
Yeah i was lucky and pretty much immediately found something that i love playing
there are guides on which are good and which you should ignore which doesnt mean you cant pick em
Hello I am brand new
Hi there
ah ill take a look
hi there! im new too lol
Very much welcome all in here into this world
yeahhh
I created a character (based of of venti from genshin)
Dont overwork as dm !
hahaha yeahhh! i know
from the info i gathered i want to become a shadow sorcerer :))
COOL nice profile pic,Luffy right?
yeeep!
Anyway if questions arise
So how do I get started with a game?
People are here to help
Find one
Thank you!
i tried to make a character on a site but appearently you can have 2 classes at once. Is that correct or not ?
Multiclassing isnt recommended at start
you can certainly
ah okioki
It can be confussing
but for new players i recommend stay at a clean classing for now
It feels like a lot of min maxing when I asked for my old party for advice
well these players certainly exists
whats the key difference between a wizard and a sorcerer btw? I looked a bit into it and wizard just seems better overall?
Sorcerer is stronger but wizard is more flexible with spells
Sorcerer gets metamagic and knows all their spells, doesnt have to pick at the beginning of the day
ah okioki
A wizzard is like a scholar while a sorcerer is... naturally magical
How you getting Sorcerer is stronger?
Ô oki
then ill stick to sorcerer haha
wizards learn magic by reading and studying - sorcerer's get their magic through innate sources
and does that ancestrial blood have to be draconic ?
Wizzards get more spell or spell slots sth sth last time I checked, can't remember
I deem them stronger due to metamagic
no - talk with your DM to come up with a reasonable reason why your sorcerer has magic that fits the kind of D&D game you're playing.
Twinned spells/quickened spell/ etc etc
ah oki thank you !
I'm building a warlock just so that I don't have to count too many spell slots
bad at math
A lovely decision
what patron
on... the 21st tab reading about them
Can't decide 😭 I'm a sucker for lore I just keep reading all of them
My personal favourite ofc is the fiend
Hello
Hi
Very much welcome
I want to make a character but I don't know where to go to talk about it
just one more question. I wanted my ancestrial blood to come from a demon/devil. But appearently that would kinda automatically make me a tiefling. Is there a way to not look like a tiefling haha.
No - your sorcerer magic can come from anywhere that the DM allows.
Ya welcome
Imma head there aswell since i do love char creation
Tagging along
Salutations! My 10 year old expressed an interest in DnD, and although I have played it in the past, I have never DM'd, so I am here to gain knowledge, understanding, obtain pointers and tips so that I can take her on a journey.
Welcome to our little plane !
#dm-discussion can help out with DM tips, and we can help out with getting started in here. Do you need any resources or have any questions?
Thank you for the warm welcome! Thus far I have purchased some dice, a starter kit, borrowed a couple books from the library (players handbook and DM handbook), and found the online DnD site where we were able to set up our characters for printing, which was very helpful.
There are starter quests in the starter kit that include I think pretty much all I need to get through three chapters? I also found some printable online quests, which is where I plan to start because I am just not experienced enough for homebrew yet.
My biggest concern is trying to figure out all the numbers, all the little bits, pieces, the checks, what to roll for and when, etc.
Sounds like you've got a lot of it already sorted then. Does your little one have any friends playing with her, or is she going on a solo journey?
i may hand you a good guide one second
Just her and Daddy. I am admitedly planning to join as a NPC support character, but I know it's not the wisest to be both a DM and a character, but trying to bulk out the team a little bit.
Handbooker helper from critical role is a good start. easy to find on youtube
explaining everything in easy bits
Sidekicks are actually recommended for small groups! DMPC is a term for when the DM is trying to both be a player and a DM, and risks making their own PC the main character. Sidekicks can be handed over to players to control, and be roleplayed in a way that makes it clear they're support, not the main characters
Oh, nice! So I can in essence allow them to decide what the character might do in any given situation?
I'm a RPer by nature, and understand godmodding/powergaming, I don't want a major part in any story, just someone who can assist in battle and story growth.
Most D&D adventures are designed for about 4 players. So for newer, smaller groups, giving them some NPC sidekicks to help balance that out is a good bet.
I think the official Sidekick rules are in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, but the playtest versions are free to use and very similar
You could allow them to control the NPCs in combat (also giving them more turns to engage between enemy turns) but decide as a DM what the NPCs might feel outside of combat.
That is very helpful, thank you.
I have a feeling that I am going to jump into this thinking I am as prepared as I can be, but may come here for support when I come upon something I cannot figure out. :p
always available for tips
Helloooooo 👋, so I’m quite new to dnd and I wanted to find some other people who enjoy like I do so I joined the discord but I do have a couple questions, them being:
- How do I join sessions as a player and 2) Is there session more geared to new players
Any help would be appreciated 🙏
Alright thank you very much

Posted how you would look
there is so much info, it is endless
You'll make it
In case of questions we are here to help
handbooker helper
critical role
Gives a good start
I made a character actually
Yesterday, as a warm up. Googled a bunch, almost understood everything. Honestly I think the rest is me finding a game with a host that is ready to explain some more because combat and all that has to be mostly learnt through experience. Watching a Baldur's Gate 3 run won't cut it. I'm too confused even though I like the game. If my knowledge was a stat, I'd be in -100
It's pretty easy you'll pick it up quickly
Hello! I need some assistance with a recent character, I want to make a character which has an objective (Means to a Goal kinda thing) of making an army, completely using his magic, so a summonner, what class and what abilities would I need to make a character like that work
👍
So I’ve only played 2 rounds of D&D in my life. I had a great experience but the group I did it with hasn’t continued at all. So I’ve moved to discord in hopes of getting to play again. How easy is it for a newcomer to adapt to playing through discord? I just don’t want to be a burden to people when I do find a group to play with.
Very easy and finding a game could take a few
Alrighty! I’ll try and find some people with patience for me 😅
Well you free I could message you
That would be helpful yes
Welcome in here !

Is it safe to say that the races inside the Player's Handbook would make a good fit into a majority of campaigns?
Yea usually
Of course! I would just like to think of some character options while my friends and I are searching for a local DM. 🙂 I do realize the DM would be pretty involved with the creation process but just want to think of some options in the meantime.
Thanks folks!
Always a good idea 😄
Remember to have fun
Anytime
My #1 goal is always to have fun!!!
Thats very important
And we dms want you to have fun
Yesss! I got way too into building a Satyr bard before I realized we kind of have to have our group/DM situation sorted first, so I have put her on the back burner in hopes someone will help me bring her to life someday 🥹
Another Saytr i seeeeee and a bard love it
Really?
i make most my saytr chaotic good, so i can mess with people the whole campaign
She is a bubbly forager who irrationally speaks to mushrooms and thinks they talk back to her, and has a cute lil accent like Jester from Critical Role LOL
ye ye
Sounds fantastic
Mines love to create mischief for the entertainment of it all and will always choose a party, gathering, and etc over battle sometimes to his on determent. Now my Saytr/Ranger whole goal is to be the king of all saytrs
Waaaah sounds so epic, and like a lot of fun!!!
@knotty spindle if you have a minute we can talk
I'll send you a DM! as in direct message... not the other kind of DM hahahaha
Hello everybody 🙂
hello Kitten!!
Hello Kitten how is your day going?
Good!! Finally have time to sit down and chill for a few.
that wonderful to hear, always need some time for relaxation.
Manuevering discord to find other servers to get back into DnD on mobile was so painstaking
Ahh thats why i joined the discord im trying to get back into DnD. Want to get my imagination going again.
Yes, we've had a very large gorgeous tree in the back yard for a while now. Just found out the vines are starting to kill it so I've spent all day ripping then off and chopping them down to hopefully save it.

I used to play about 7 years ago, but unfortunately the DM got into shady business and it all fell apart.
Oof
Dang sorry to hear your Dm did that to you
im sure the discord has wonderful DMs in it though, so im sure you will find one in here
Then I heard Baldurs Gate 3 came out, and bought it to stay busy while I felt like a zombie with pneumonia. Sort of reignited my urge to play in campaigns again, only my friend group's DM sort of... Um, well, he's been disowned.
welcome !
I'm always looking to meet new people and make new friends! I'm excited
Hazbin Hotel fan I see
In this little plane
A person of Taste you get a point for charisma
🥰 how many more for the claim that not only are they one of my 2 favorite characters, but my second being Stolas?
Im slowly realising DnD is a wonderful place to find friends plus we all have one thing in common which is always a good convo starter
Absolutely!! I'm just simply both unskilled AND a little rusty. But hence the newcomers and joining a group, you don't get good without practice
That get additional ones ofc
So true
I had a family member who was dear to my heart who looooved Taz btw. He had shirts and old plushes and such.
Awe so glad to make you smile
@restive herald and sorry for your loss
Absolutely
can you play online?
Same same, I don't play the game but it flicked the switch in me
That's my preference honestly. I'm a full time student with two kiddos so meeting irl is tricky.
how could i do so
Thank you 😊
Havent got my new gen console yet,but that is the first game i plan on getting for it Lol
Discord server and doing group calls with it and such. DM can walk you through it once you find one.
well, that's like months ago, I'm not getting the game any soon so I'm returning to good ol dnd
ok
I desperately wanted it on PC but it was too pricey to upgrade it so it could run. No mods for meeee
Surely
Schedule is important
I'm sorry I didn't start earlier
Huh ?
Yea this year i did a big move so financially it wouldn't have been responsible, and DnD has so many ways to play it esy to come back to.
Hello ! I'm new to D&D and I really want to learn how to play
Hello and welcome
Welcome!
Thank you !
Welcome in this lovely lil plane
Hey everyone. Im new to Forgotten Realms and D&D I came from DragonAge/TES...I am currently addicted to BG3 and figured this would be the best place to ask for lore related stuff. That chat in BG3 chat hasnt really been that helpful so hopfully i can get the answers i need here! So... What is a good source to see the entire Timeline of the entire history of Forgotten Realms..
I m getting info from all over the place on time lines i wanna start researching form the beginning of time and go from there.
Hello
The only novels I have is the legend of drizzt 1,2 and 3
Thank you
Forgotten realms wiki
I'd say wiki tbh
If questions come up feel free to ask
ive been reading that..is that the only source?
but i cant really find a timeline from the beginnign of tie to current day
Yt content creators make good vids about General lore
Unless you had older core books yes
Do you think its best to create characters on the D&D beyond website or on paper?
It's not. But it gives us an overall summary so we don't have to read a whole book. You also can watch yt videos
Digital is easier at start
I can recommend handbooker helper from critical role on yz
Yt*
Thank you! I've noticed I have wasted some good paper then
theyre not my style. i cant really watch someone talking with a picture on the screen. Now I can do that while im driving becauseall your doing is listening but I would rather watch someones talking head then stare at a picture slowly zooming in while someone talks over it...unless i havent found the right one? idk...im completely new at this.
Thats ofc different for everyone
Do you think it's a good idea to play solo when your new to the game?
It's a so-so tbh
There are solo games but groups are the real deal
Since it create a Team dynamic
And Potential stories about friendship and victory
I mean, to get the basic mechanics down, a short solo session wouldn't be the worst idea.
Indeed
Ability checks, saving throws, initiative, AoO...
To get a feel for stuff
I had seen a video from a girl who plays by herself and she says its fun when you don't have nobody that plays d and d anymore.
Ginny di ?
Yeah her
Well you can ofc
Indeed! But it's good to play with others.
It's like playing chess alone. People do that alot but playing with others is also fun
But for the full experience gettin into a Group is so good
