I see, thank you! 😊
Ya welcome
We are allowed to reuse the same backstory right?
wdym
I think a good backstory is one you and the DM work on together. You have a seed and they help it grow so that you both feel good about its fit into the setting/campaign.
I have literally n3ver playef dnd in my life
For example, let’s say you have a surface level backstory in one campaign, and in another you reuse the same backstory but add more details perhaps?
Can a wizard of the dungeons and dragons show me your knowledge
Some playere re-use character concepts. So long as the table’s okay with it, you can do so.
I think I understand? Thx for the advice.
a d 4 usually kills a wizard
Take that wisdom
LMFAO
jk
No but im serious
is there any way to find a table without this discord
dnd beyond forums
I literally do not a single thing about dnd and it makes me feel stupid
See above: #dnd-newcomers message

Basic dnd gameplay
Go for the crap guide for dnd from jocat very well done videos with comedic aspect
Lore
You can go to runesmith he explains it well aswell
Oh that’s great I’ll go check it out now!
Con affects your hit points, not defense.
Naa how much health your char can have and how he resists stuff like sickness
Armor class is your defense
If i havent slept for the 3 days thats constituion
Well if you would roll a 1
You would be now sleeping
I would spontaneously combust
Naa thats level 9 spells are for
If i was a DM and you rolled a 1 on like
Dodging
You would roll directly into the wnemy's blade and instantly die
Cope
Critical failures are not standard rules.
Indeed
Awwwww
and nobody would make another character
Homebrew
Which i use alongside critical success
Since you gotta have both of the world
But that’s beyond the scope of this channel.
Indeed
thats not happening
Constitution gives you HP
Armor class dictates how high the enemy needs to roll on their attack to attack you
but the dmg is high
Ohhhh
Armor class is dictated by your armor, and your dexterity
I can send the message request
i already messaged you
Anyway for more questions we are available
we don't bite (often)
Usually only my fanged friends do that
I’m so sorry I didn’t get the request until I clicked on your profile 😬
Helo
I haven't played dnd before and I would like to join a campaign but I don't know how to ask if I can join one
I can be ur dm
I have been seeing ads for dnd beyond and wondering if you have a campaign on there
D&D Beyond is a website/app tool for character sheets and digital books.
You can use it as part of your campaign. For mine, my players use DDB for their characters and I share my digital books with them.
If you use one of the published campaign adventures bought from DDB then yes you can use DDB for your campaign.
I should say that I had the app for about a year but I don't know if it classes me as a newcomer or not
Does someone have a campaign on dnd beyond I can join
I'm not sure how to ask
Step 1: read all the instructions.

Need help with dndbeyond.com. How do I unfollow posts, I keep getting emails
Alright, so I’ve never played dnd before but it peeked my interest, how does it work
Basically your DM will lead you through a story sorta where you and your party try to complete a mission usually to defeat the BBEG (Big Bad Evil Guy)
Well, what are some of the basics of it
1- Dice basically decide the game and the outcome of a task
2- Each character has a race, class, and allignment (For example Chaotic Evil)
3- The quality of the game is decided on how you, the other players, and the DM make it
Also, you need a party, dice, and a character to get started
And how do I get all that
Cause I’m trying to play online
And idk where to start
Hey
I have 0 clue how to play but it’s interestingg and I wanna learn
Ya same
hi
For online, try roll 20

So for the recent influx of newcomers:
The best way I can describe it, is in DND, you're collaboratively telling a story. The DM acts as the world and the people in it, whereas you - and other players - play your respective character within it.
The rules come into play when there's a question of whether somebody succeeds at something when there's a chance of both failure and success.
So, for example, you don't fail in patting a friendly dog, nor do you succeed in shooting an arrow to the moon.
The rules decide who can do what, when they can start doing it, and how much they can do it, as well as governing how tough things are and how damaging your offensive capabilities are.
I’m asking this because I feel like the character I’m using is someone i really love and it would feel wasteful if the campaign ends abruptly and his story just ends without any resolution
Reusing a concept is fine, for example if a campaign fizzles out or you can't play in it anymore
But reusing the exact same sheet and bringing over all your stuff is generally not a thing you can just do, outside of Westmarches and Adventurer's League
Also because the people im playing with are different time zones and we are just going to chat to each other no microphones and im quite scared if it just suddenly gets canceled
No, I mean to say the character and im using will go back to level 3 and do the whole process again
yeah the concept
I've done that a few times with a Half-Drow-Elf called Vigo, sometimes it's neat to explore a character differently
funnily enough i dont understand like half of the warlock patrons
Lol I'm going to be joining my first campaign ever next month
exciting
Hi everybody, I was brought in by BG3, just taking a look around and hoping to maybe join a game 🙂
how do warlock spell slots work with spells higher than 6th level
Warlocks get a feature called Mystic Arcanum to cast those higher level spells

Hey everyone!
Welcome!
Hi
Hello everyone
Hello!!
I have a question about weapons, so how do they work? Like obviously you can only use weapons you already have (can’t pull a gun out of nowhere) but do you need to roll to see if the attack hits or..? Potions confuse me a lot, because would you just need to say something like, ‘I heal my teammate using the potion of healing!’ Or something like that?
For weapons you basically roll to hit then if you hit roll the damage die specified on the weapon
This is a basic and simple description
Damage die? I thought we had to use strength die
Rules about combat can be found here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat
Thanks
Wait, you need a whole other die for damage?
No - there are two dice rolls - the to hit roll
Then if it hits, roll the camage die
Yes, however if you use dnd beyond you can do all your rolls digitally
Rolling to hit is a d20 + attack modifier + prof if you have it.
Ohh I get it now, thank you both
(prof means proficiency)
Thanks for that 🙂
I'm looking for a group to play with
Have a look in #find-a-game
Does anyone know any good games I can join
All the posts are made by the same guy
I can't find anything on that channel
Check out #looking-for-players. The posts there are from a bot that is used to make posts for those putting them up using #find-a-game.
I'm trying to submit for looking for a DM, do I message the bot itself or is there a different way of using the command (I think Im misreading something in the directions and dont want to end up sending something to the wrong chat, sorry)
hi, i want to start playing dnd but i dont know where to start.... im currently watching some tutorials on youtube but i dont know if i need to find a party first or if i need to create a character first
I'd recommend reading the free basic rules (no need to memorize them but skim over them and get a feel for the language/terminology and where the rules are located for future lookup) - check the messages pinned to this channel.
Then maybe watch some videos of folks playing D&D (sounds like you're doing that - do not that many D&D videos are entertainment first and not so much a primer on how to play D&D).
Then try your hand at making a character sheet or two to learn a bit about the mechanics and rules behind that.
Then go find a group and start playing! (see #find-a-game to learn some helpful info and also instructions on how to use our LFG channels)
would you say a players handbook would help a lot in getting started or am i gonna be fine without one
I'd suggest playing with just the free basic rules and then if you like the game enough, sure, invest in the Players Handbook. It provides additional character options.
Also before buying books, consider whether you prefer physical or digital access. You can't get both unless you buy bundled options available through Wizard's of the Coasts' online D&D store: dndstore.wizards.com
For digital, DnDBeyond is pretty neat as you can purchase individual class/race/spells/items without buying the whole book. Whatever you buy gets discounted from the book if you later decide to buy the whole book. Also DnDBeyond does allow content sharing if someone in the DnDBeyond campaign has a Master Tier subscription and they enable content sharing. This allows folks to share their books/materials that they've purchased with others in their game.
You can also buy digital book access through Roll20 (only usable through their platform) and Fantasy Grounds (also only avilable through their platform).
Hi im fallen I've joined because I will hopefully be DM-ing my first group (thinking about doing it on DND beyond because I don't have a job) I'd like to just say if anyone has any tips they would be greatly appreciated I haven't actually done this before or played too much DND as a player either so I'm fairly new to this
Hi there! For useful DM tips and tricks, check in with the folks in #dm-discussion.
I'd say my two major tips would be:
- Focus on Fun - it's a game, make sure everyone (including yourself) is having fun
- Establish expectations and boundaries and enforce them (e.g. expected player behavior, what topics are allowed/not allowed, how to handle player disagreements, etc.)
This guide is a good start: https://howtogm.guide
Search this server for “dm tips.” There’s plenty to read through!
What is a hit die
Please don't post the same question across multiple channels
You were answered in #dnd-rules but you can find more information here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#HitPointsandHitDice
might be a smart thing to let each and every person upon entering the server know they should check the pinned messages in each channel before asking a question
We do, it's in the server rules
Hey guys what is the class called if I have revolvers
There's no official class matching that description
So what do I put?
Have you read the basic rules on character creation?
Not really
You should probably start there, you don't normally get to choose equipment and then build a class around that
Ok

hi, silly question. if i cast a spell like hypnotic pattern. it says that each creature makes a wisdom saving throw. How is the figure of the wisdom saving throw determined?
it is in the creatures statblock
but if you mean the spell save dc its the casters casting stat modifier +proficiency bonus + 8
Are you asking what is DC that targets must hit to save?
Or how targets determine the result of their rolls
ah yes spell save dc. thanks for this!
I have a character and I know the basic rules but I don't know how to find a game I read the find a game channel and I dont get it
Help pls
SAME HERE
Basically in the #find-a-game channel, there is a bot. You can use that bot by entering the command for what channel you want to make a post in. If you are a player, and you want to find a DM, then you should make a post in #750812887697588356
When you enter the command, the bot will give you a form to fill out. When you are done with that form, the boat will be automatically generated for you. After you do that, you can also go to the other channel, #looking-for-players and read through the posts there. That’s where the DMs that want new players make their posts. If you find a DM that looks like a good fit for you, you can use the discussion thread under their post to contact them and try to join their campaign. And at the same time, DMs will make posts in the discussion thread under your post, if they want you to join them.
Thank you colossus
is there a good character builder that allows me to access fey ancestry for my sorcerer
also do you have to be an elf for fey ancestry
There's no Fey-oriented sorcerous origin in the base rules so that's homebrew/third party
but regardless things only do what they say they do - there's only a restriction if it says there is, it can only do X if it says it can do X, and so on.
Hello everyone!
I am kinda new to D&D and I need some help with creating my character. I found the Astral Elf race and it seems really cool and interesting for roleplaying and I am really excited to play it… but I have a problem in creating my character.
Because I don’t have Spelljammer my D&D Beyond doesn’t let me create a character of that race so I have to ask for help if anyone can help me and is willing to help.
So the main part of my question is how do I actually create an Astral Elf character that is a Cleric and with that I wanna ask for example what proficiencies do I have, in how many skills am I proficient at, what backgrounds can I take and what do they give me,…
P.S. This is the question I will have to ask my future DMs, but generally would DMs allow me to run this race outside Spelljammer setting?
If you'd like to use that race in DDB you'll need to purchase the race, which can be done individually for $3 iirc in the purchase page for the Spelljammer book
Otherwise, print off a physical character sheet and fil it in manually using a copy of the book someone else at the table has purchased
As for filling in proficiencies and other features, its just a matter of reading through the cleric rules in the PHB/Basic Rules and doing things one step at a time
For the cleric you get:
Skills: Choose two from History, Insight, Medicine, Persuasion, and Religion
This means you pick two of those skills, fill in the dot next to their listing on the sheet and add your proficiency bonus to the total modifier, plus whatever ability score modifier they are used with.
This is something you have to ask your DM. Some may not allow certain playable races in their campaign.
Hi guys! I’m very new to DnD but I really want to start playing! How should I find campaigns that are willing to accept newbie’s? I was thinking about joining some of the communities but I’m not sure if I can because I’ve never played. I would appreciate any advice!

Me and @real shell are new and we created our characters and we have been looking for a dungeon master that will accept us for a campaign. dm me or @real shell for more information.
have a look in #looking-for-players
also a few questions if I buy a D&D book or adventure in book for do I get a key or something for it in Beyond and other question is if I should get Spelljammer to play with my friends or is there a better book for a beginner/moderate party
keep in mind that even if a dm doesnt directly advertise being new player friendly, they likely will be
no, and yes
for new players, i recommend dragons of stormwreck isle
it's free on dnd beyond
We have been looking all day
itll take longer than a day
yeah we played that one and are looking for something a bit more advanced
what do you mean some books come with digital edition or?
no to your first question, yes to your second
ah okay
maybe ask in #dm-discussion
okay will do
Does anyone know if sharing a book online is the same thing as giving them a copy or can you only see it when sharing a campaign
I might have worded that weird idk
You can only see it when sharing (and having a master sub involved from somebody in the campaign)
not realy
have a read of them. theyre linked in the pinned messages for this channel
thanks!

And I believe was already full
New games get posted all the time, keep checking. Also spread your net wide by checking other D&D-related Discord servers' LFG channels.
Wanna send me some other dnd related discord servers?
Most D&D Youtubers have their own Discord servers.
Oh, thats right
Well I am in The DM's lair discord server but I dont think it has an lfg channel
P. S. Is pointing out specific dnd servers against the rules?
P. P. S. You got any other ytubers with discord servers to recommend? I legit dont know any more 💀
There are D&D Youtubers, such as Matt Colville, Sly Flourish, The DM Lair, Dungeon Dudes, Dungeon Craft, How to be a Great GM, Nerdarchy, Web DM, XP to Level 3, WASD20, Seth Skorkowsky, Esper the Bard, How to RPG, Zee Bashew, Don't Stop Thinking, Icarus Games, Runehammer, Zipperon Disney, and MonarchsFactory, who give advice on DMing and playing.
Watch what you enjoy, but none of it will get you ready for playing, everyone comes in from a new perspective
Playing is the only way to learn
There aren't many, but there's r/lfg_europe
I think you forgot to read my question 😅
I'm sorry, what was the dyno message? I couldn't read it
I don't really see a question....
That was the question
Oh, I can't answer that one, I'm not in Europe

Lucky? Wanna trade places?
US
Thars like the best place for dnd, no?
It's a big country, can't answer that for everyone
Poland
Hi, I understand that wizards have a spellbook, do they have to be holding it and reading out of it when spellcasting? Also wizards get the option of an arcane focus , does that mean if they choose to use it they dont need to spend the 50gp to transfer spells into their book or the 10gp to create a back up?
You need to spend money to do smth with your spells??!!
they dont have to hold it
they only need it when they prepare spells in the morning
also no
According to the book to copy a spell into their spell book they must spend 50gp
thats not what the arcane focus does
the arcane focus only replaces material components that are not consumed and dont have a cost
They have to verbally say the spell, that's I think the only requirement normally
Damn
Guys are there spells with only ingrediant components
(No verbal or somatic)
i dont think so
Ok thanks, I'm assuming 50 Gp is quite a lot for every new spell since right now the party of 5 can just put all of their money together to make it
50gp isnt much past like level 5
also the spells you gain from levelling up dont cost that
its only for the spells that you copy from scrolls or other spellbooks you find while adventuring
If you have to pool money, it's not worth it
Thankyou, one last thing, all schools of wizard have access to the same spells found on the spell list correct but then the school just adds some abilities/spells of it's own
Guys, is it just me or do +1 weapons feel not very much stronger compared to their not magical counterparts?
yup
they are. thats a +1 to hit and +1 damage
+1 to hit is a 5% increase to hit chance
Thankyou!!!
which is pretty substantial
Yea, +1 is a significant increase
with an up to scratch attack stat against average ac for an enemy of an equal cr to your level you have approximately a 65% hit chance normally, that goes up to 70% with a +1 weapon
and say it's a longsword that you're one handing
average damage on hit will be 7.5 assuming +3 in the damage stat (normally str)
that goes up to 8.5 with a +1 magic weapon
which as a percent is decent
more importantly, a lot of monsters have resistance to nonmagical damage
starting at about level 8ish
so with a nonmagical weapon, you'll be doing about half damage
magic weapons are quite nice - and, as Pixel says, they also increase your base damage
and your hit chance, which is amplified if you took good feats like Great Weapon Master or Sharpshooter
I was looking at the spell dominate Person, it says that the person you are trying to control has to succeed a wisdom saving throw, does that mean the player tries to control a human lets say, as soon as the player casts the spell the human makes a wisdom saving throw with their own modifiers
I’ve seen some dnd content and i wanna try playing but idk how when and where
Honestly I feel exactly the same way, that's why I was hoping this group would help me work out the newbie side.
Hey everyone.
This is the first time I've been in a d&d server and I'd love if someone would help me out with what I'm supposed to do here 🙂
yes

best look for a group that is looking for players. check #looking-for-players and see if one off the offers fits your schedule. Or you could always just go ahead and be the Dungeon master yourself. You get to rp as DM too, you just take a different role. As yourself the question if you rather like playing out a single characters reaction and development, or if you enjoy telling stories and coming up with creative situations and challenges more
Greetings! My daughter started up a dnd beginner course, hosted by her behavior therapists, as it targets: creativity, teamwork, problem solving, social skills, math, leadership, learning, imagination, and on and on. She loved it, so i jumped in and spent almost a grand on everything from several books minitures to paint etc, thinking it was something the two of us could do to connect and bond deeper together with (as i have no interest in minecraft and pokemon which are her other obsessions lol) but since i dont really know how to play or dm, it seems its not something we can do with just the two of us. Weve gone to the local game store several times a week for about 2 months begging to be taught, but there is no one at beginner levels, or willing to have a 12 year old play. They only do a beginning course once a month, and it sold out in 2 hours. Weve been watching youtube videos etc, but we have no one to play with. How do we go about finding a place in this community? Cuz so far it feels like "get good" before we can get in, or figure it out yourself then come back. We just want to play, as we both learn better by doing rather than reading or watching
it seems its not something we can do with just the two of us
it 100% is, that style of play is called Duet and it sounds like it'd be perfect for you and your daughter
There are online games for beginners but I do agree, finding one that is also willing to take a young person might be tough. Do try having a look around, there's #find-a-game here, Roll20 and others. You might want to try looking up Five Room Dungeons and making your own short adventures to DM for them.
I've done duet play with newcomers and you can find duet adventures on the DMs Guild, give me a second
Thank you, its also my first time on discord, i created it just to ask this question lol. Ive not heard of duet. Thank you for the tip!
Done. Got those 3 duets now 🙂 ty for letting me know they exist!
No worries, and best of luck with your new hobby!
please elaborate
i dont know anything about D&D except from riverdale and stranger things
but since yesterday i have watched D&D

how old is your daughter if i may ask?
Almost 13
Then if you run it for her you probably want to not be too strict with the rules but still set limits.
The makers of those duet adventures have a whole site dedicated to that style of play you may find useful: https://dndduet.com/
hello
so i played the short adventure, now im trying to make a character in dnd beyond website
but there are so few options, ive seen videos with yk different types of races like golems and yk demons and everything
The Basic Rules, which are free, give you limited character creation options. You would need to buy additional books or races (and such) in order to have access to them in DDB. It also sounds like some folks used homebrew, which is unofficial fan-made content.
ahhh home brew yeah
so say if i had a character which is like a "demi God" class itd be a homebrew right?
Yeah, but the odds of homebrew being accepted at a table aren't as high as it'd be if you used official material.
Prob not the best system to play something like a demo god, say you were this Demi god class and at lvl1 you died to a goblin, you would prob find no enjoyment with that
Where do you go to find player for a dnd game

How good is a level 2 bard that physically cannot deal damage?
That’ll depend on the rest of your table. If the bard makes everyone else better enough that it’s enjoyable, then it’s a good bard.
What do you mean “good”? Because a bard csn be extremely effective in ways other than direct damage
It is a full caster after all
bard is a full caster???
ik it does
Ok
So, the Bard is as effective as the player picking and using spells. And dishing out barding inspiration
Or, just fire a shortbow at low levels
nah we at prison, no weapons
also I picked rogue as a subclass cuz why not
instead of bard second level
hi, which is the best for damage out of: Samurai, Echo Knight and Eldritch Knight?
We need to back up
Rogue is not a subclass. Do you mean multiclass?
thats right
Almost entirely down to how you build it
I actually have no clue how to get a subclass
All classes gain a subclass. Different classes gain them ar different levels.
A bard gets to choose their subclass at bard level 3
I strongly encourage you to go back to the basic rules or PHB and review your class features which describe this
And i also strongly discourage you from multiclassing as a new player that doesnt yet have a full grap of character creation. It will make things harder
Built to their 'best potential', which would be best? Sorry, I'm quite new so not sure how to rlly build them yet
nah I'm just doing bullshit for this class
where is the fun in not multiclassing
consistency
Learning how to play?
If you don’t know what a subclass is, i will respectfully suggest sticking to one class and learning how it works before attempting to multiclass
Ty for your suggestion :D
where is a free phb? Or is that considered piracy
If you’re asking how to achieve the mathematical best damage results, that is something for #optimization
The pathways for increasing martial character’s damage are (for better or worse) very well established
The free basic rules are in the pinned messages in this channel

I make no assumptions on people's experience level.
Built to their 'best potential', which would be best? Sorry, I'm quite new so not sure how to rlly build them yet

i tried making a character
used dice roll to get the ability scored
scores*
but i have -5 strenght T_T
i believe that that is impossible no matter how you build your character
rolling for stats happen by rolling 3d6
it was a 14 roll too
what?
i dont think you understand how you fill in your stats
yeah i dont think i do T_T
If you're having trouble use the general numbers, can't remember what they're actually called
It's 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 iirc
standard array
A 14 whether from rolling or another stat gen method, will never be “-5”, thats not how ability modifiers are calculated
A 14 ability score means your ability modifier is +2 in that ability
Each ability score directly correlates to a modifier, as show by this table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityScoresandModifiersTable
If you have a 14 as your base ability score, that would be a +2 in that ability. In order to get a -5, you would need to have your ability score be exactly 1, which isn't possible through any of the normal methods of stat generation
ty
could some1 explain to me what dragonblood and ravenite are? are they both like 'subclasses' of dragonborn?
Where are you seeing these terms? What context are they from?
From Critical Role: Explorer's Guide To Wildemount
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/16-dragonborn#DraconbloodDragonborn
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/16-dragonborn#RaveniteDragonborn
Ah they are Subraces of Dragonborn from Wildemount
ty
how does that work? do i choose one of those at the start?
If your DM allows those options.
Those are optional because they belong to the Critical Role campaign setting (which means you need access to the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount book).
Think of them like variations of the normal dragonborn. Assuming your game is using normal D&D Lore, they only exist within the Exandria setting, so if your game does not take place there, these would not be an option (normally). Your DM may choose to allow them, or incorporate them as part of the lore of their own D&D Setting

Guys do certain races like fire Genasi work better in certain environments? Like would they be more effective in the mouth of a volcano than an icy tundra?
Yes, but indirectly
Through the fact that fire genesis have fire resistance, which would probably be very useful in the mouth of a volcano
I've seen in some adventures they do something like this:
For every hour of travel through this area a character must make a DC10 Constitution saving throw, or take a level of exhaustion due to the extreme heat. A character with fire resistance makes this save with advantage
So yeah, it does happen from time to time. If you feel like your character should have a benefit to travelling through an environment due to their resistances, feel free to ask your DM in the moment
Ah ok thank you, nice mistborn reference in your bio btw
Noted, thank you
haha thanks, that line just hit so stupidly hard idek why
"tempest of horseshoes" lmao
I preferred it when Kelsier got absolutely rocked in one hit by the Lord ruler, just showed how powerful he was and gave me a bit of perspective lol
Yeah, as a DM I feel that scene perfectly orchestrates how to make your BBEG a threat. Kill an NPC that up until that moment appears incredibly strong
I understand everything in that sentence apart from BBEG lol
oh sorry, Big Bad Evil Guy
I'm very very new to this I have no idea how most of this works 😭
That seems way too simple 😂
Yeah its a very broad term
Let us know if you need any help 😁
Thanks but I don't even know where to start lol, I read through the rule book and created my first character, just looking for some hands on learning that's welcoming to brand new players
Thats a good way of going about it, you'll learn much more by actually playing
Looking to play online or find an in-person game?
Definitely online, I live in a seaside town and there is almost nobody around here remotely interested in DnD lol
In that case I'd suggest casting as many lines as you can keep an eye on
I'd check out the #find-a-game channel here, various subreddits, facebook pages and Roll20
The more games you apply to, the more likely one will come back as viable
Soooo. Just Seeking Confirmation Or Correction 😬 Regarding Saving Throws During Encounters/Combat...
As The DM...I Get To Be Like The BBEG Does This Atrocious Act (Some Sort Of Attack Or WhatNot) I Roll The d20(?) To Decide The Damage? And They Have To Roll What For The Saving Throw Which Would Ultimately Decide Whether The Attack Hit Or Miss?!
Thanks, I'm not sure what level my character is and Beyond is weird to navigate lol, not sure how to look at the different tabs
Your characters level will be in the top left of the sheet, or in the little drop-down box on the class tab in the editor
Actor does action - if it's an attack, they make an attack roll. If that attack roll (d20) + modifiers and bonuses meets or beats the targets Armor Class (AC), then roll the damage dice for that attack. Natural 20 rolls are automatic hits and double the damage dice rolled. Natural 1s are automatic misses regardless of modifiers and bonuses added.
Nine dots, bottom right.
Some actions and many spells will require the target to make a saving throw. Sometimes this means they can avoid the effect entirely, other times it may just reduce it. The specific information for the action or spell will tell you what happens.
So Legit Same For Both Monsters To Characters And Characters To Monsters, Just I As The DM Roll For The Monster If I Decide They Attack Back Etc?
Yes - any attacks usually require an attack roll (D20 + modifiers/bonuses).
Some spells though require a saving throw from the targeted creature.
But the spell description will outline what's needed.
Are There Specific Die For The Saving Throws For Each Character? And If So I'm Assuming They'll Be In Their Tables That I Probably OverLooked 🤦🏻♀️
all 5e characters/creatures use a d20 for their saves
modifiers are, as you correctly pointed out, in their statblocks/sheets

What we here for
What classes can have a companion? Like can I be a bard with a cat familiar that attached to me after their master passed away?
Rangers, any class with the Find Familiar spell, artificers, and wildfire druids. A bard could take Find Familiar through their Magical Secrets feature, but they don't get a companion through ordinary class progression. You could always try to work something out with the DM, though.
Rangers, wizards can cast "find familiar", but there are feats where you can do it. I think it's ritual caster. I might be wrong about that
Ok. I'm like brand new to D&D.

Not sure how to use the commands? I'm trying to post in the DM looking for players, but I can't post a message there and the instructions are vague to me?
Can anyone help?
Please read (carefully) #find-a-game - it has instructions on the bot commands.
The commands start with a /
I did, not sure how to use the commands, do I just use the hash tag in any chat box in the server followed by my post?
So looking for players post command would be /looking-for and select the /looking-for players command
You can use that command in any channel (the bot autodeletes it). Once you send that command the bot will respond and give you a form to fill out. Once you submit it, it creates the post in the desired channel and creates a thread attached to the post. Use the thread to provide additional details, clarifications, or corrections.
Does that help clarify things?
Yes, perfect! Filling out the bot form now.
how does this work? you get max hd at level 1 and average or roll it there after?
at level 1 your max hp equals the max roll for your class's hit die (so if you're a fighter with a d10, you get 10), plus you constitution modifier
at every level after that, you either roll your class's hit die and gain max hp equal to the roll + your con mod, or you gain max hp equal to the average (rounded up) + your con mod
How do I play?

Hi! Been getting into Baldurs Gate 3, how do its combat rules compare to regular 5e DnD?
Baldur's Gate is sort of based on D&D 5e but takes some major liberties in the name of video gameplay experience.
So maybe similarities in core concepts but differences in implementation
BG3's initiative uses a d4 I heard (I don't have the game) while 5E uses a d20.
Is it worth it to get polearm mastery on a hexblade?
So that I can attack as a bonus action? However my first bonus action will be hexblade's curse.
Sounds like a #character-discussion or #optimization question
Oh sorry.
This channel is more of new to D&D folks to learn core concepts and mechanics
can you explain? I get the walking around with sprinkled extra game-activities, but what about the combat?
as in comparison
As OldManYellingAtClouds mentioned, they may use a different implementation to initiative even though the core concept of iniative is still there.
Initiative is how D&D manages combat turns.
I don't have the details of everything Baldur's Gate 3 does differently - I'm just aware that folks say it is similar to D&D 5e but there are differences due to it's video gameplay nature.
fair enough
Maybe folks in #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers could explain it better

I have grown very interested in trying the D&D experience after playing Baldurs Gate 3. Is there any way I can find a new player-friendly online session?
Check the video just above

Keep in mind that even if a group doesn’t advertise specifically that they’re new player friendly, they likely will be
I see, I see!
Very excited to try it out.
Though I would recommend avoiding games that start at higher levels when you are starting out.
Me level 1
What level you start at is determined by the DM.
Makes sense
Starting at level 1 is ideal for a beginner, but more experienced players sometimes like to start at higher levels. You should try to find a group starting at as low of a level as you can find, so that you can get eased into the game and learn it as you go
Ah ok.
i wanna get into d&d but i don't own any of the books how do you buy tons of the hardcopy book for cheap also whats the best books to buy for a beginner
You don’t need to buy any books to start with

Ah okay
He wants power
Then the PHB is the next step
hardcover books not online
After that, probably Tasha’s cauldron of everything and xanathars guide to everything
whats phb
Players handbook
Basic rules + a bunch more character options
Nice
More subclasses, more spells, more races iirc
What if I want to do a custom species? Do I have to ask the DM and see if they allow it?
Talk to the dm and see if they allow homebrew races
The other option is to use custom lineage
It’s basically a blank slate race that gives you a free feat to represent your race
An official one
I think I can use the human race as a templet. Just want to make it known that they aren't human.
Custom lineage will be a better option for that
Oh
The rules for how to play a Custom Lineage character are published in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
Basically build-a-race
What’s the idea btw? There may be an existing race that can easily be reflavoured into it
Well.
Imagine a white ball. With a smile. And square legs. Around 3ft.
Yeah CL would be your best option
Perhaps a Plasmoid would work for you?
Oh yeah there’s that thing
Geometric guy
I would recommend you start with one of the playable races in the free Basic Rules so you learn the rules first.
actually, i have another question is it possible to reflavor a tiefling into a mindflayer
Fair
Plasmoid?
No.
i always wanted to play a mindflayer who got kick out of the hivebrain
Theoretically??? But it’s a very far stretch, and also playing a mindflayer has some issues
Mind flayers are a tad OP for a playable race.
They said reflavour a tiefling to that
Which doesn’t really make sense but 🤷
I read that.
I suggest playing what's in the free Basic Rules first
You're more likely to join a table with what's "legal" than trying to create a homebrew race.
Remember that the DM has final say what's allowed at their table.
Boo-womp :C
i wanted to play a mind flayer who got hit in his head and suffered some brain damage could i just be a reflavored tiefling
That’s a very far stretch
Something like one of the gith races would be a closer fit
That's something you will have to ask your DM. Personally I wouldn't allow that at my table.
Yeah mindflayers as PCs have issues
A phrase we often say in D&D is “flavor is free.” You can describe the appearance and aesthetics of your character and your abilities however you want, so long as you use the actual rules and mechanics as actually printed in the book. And your DM allows the reflavoring, of course. However, in this specific situation, I’d say it would be tough to have that allowed, since Mind Flayers are an actual thing and it would have a huge amount of story and lore consequences if you were to play as one.
Plasmoids are a race of slime people, from Spelljammer. The start off as small blobs, but can reshape themselves into humanoids, and switch back and forth between those forms
Of course that's only if your DM allows playable races from Spelljammer.
Right
what would be the playable race that i could reflavor into a mindflayer
None.
that doesn't change the race abilities
Not any, really.
The idea of “reflavor into a mindflayer” is the issue here, not the specific abilities you are using
Mind Flayer abilities are specific things which are far too powerful for a player character to just have - and as said, the story consequences of doing so in the first place even if power balance is addressed.
I wanted to play as the unidentified being. Awakened in a forgotten/ancient area by an NPC or Player. Who immediately just wants to make the world smile.
This might work well!
CL would fit best for something as out there as that
Or yeah plasmoid maybe
With some reflavouring
What kind of flavoring?
what about beholder i really wanted to play a evil race that turns out to be good
No.
Beholder is even a bigger no
They're way OP
Just reflavouring it to the creature you want
Ah ok.
Beholders are creatures that, by themselves, should make a challenge for a 13th level party of four characters. That's even more no.
Stick to something simple for your first campaigns
Then, when you get to know the game better, you can start asking people about homebrew n stuff
B a l l
If you really want to play “evil race turns out to be good” then perhaps start simpler, like a Hobgoblin or Orc. Those are playable race options
I.e.
The first time ever, our table was just PHB
Then we used xanathar for our second campaign
And now, at our third one, we just allowed Tasha and Mordekainen races
Oh
But this is a Session 0 with your DM. Many DMs don't appreciate players playing evil characters because it can be distruptive to the game.
And doesn't usually fit in the "adventurers group who help around" idea
Makes sense.
Are chaotic neutral players any good? Because I might wanna do that.
Be chaotic neutral
Loose cannon, yeah
no i want to play a good character who happens to be part of an evil race
There are no inherently evil races
I mean some yeah, but they would be monsters, not humanoid races
beholders and or mindflayer are mostly evil
This is something you should talk to your DM about.
Is a beholder human shaped
no its a ball shape
I think it's more fun to just see how things play out.
The reason I want to make a CL character.
To see how players and NPCs will react to them.
And act accordingly to the situation.
I recommend doing this with one of the races that are actually a playable race option, like Orc or Goblin or Bugbear.
You could also play as a normal person who instead gets their powers from a creature like this. That is a great origin for a warlock
Hellooo!
I have started my first campaign and we did phandalin(first part) and then we will do Curse of Strahd. My DM bought the revamped edition. I have a vampire warlock of the undead, can I become Vampire Lord( dethrone Strahd or somehow rule Barovia)?
There's no playable vampire race. The closest is the dhamphir.
Becoming a vampire lord is up to your DM (again, playable a vampire is not officially allowed but you have to talk to your DM on that).
Are there any DMs willing to take on a new player?
Here! Read the rules so you don't get confused like I did.

question: do ppl usually play much with their voice or use their normal voice
Whether or not people do special voices for their characters is highly dependent on the person and the group they are playing with. It is certainly not a requirement, if that is your concern
Some people talk about their character in 3rd person "Grog bashes down the door". Some people use first person "I bash down the door" and some people do a Grog voice as they tell the DM they're bashing the door down. And some mix it up. No way is inherently better.
D&D involves some writing, but it's mainly a game of imagination and creativity. (I also believe that just because you're bad at something now doesn't mean you're stuck at that level forever.)
If you're only a player and not a DM you shouldn't worry about writing. A lot of D&D involves improvisation rather than scripted dialogue.
D&D isn't about writing, either as a player or a DM
that's why pre-written adventures exist

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Do I have to pay for it?
The Basic Rules are free. Think of it like a video game demo where you try it to see if you like it before you buy it (in this case the books).
If you find a table to play it (either in person or online) typically the DM shares their books with their players.
Oh ok
Basic Rules have plenty to get into. Elves and dwarves and half-orcs, oh my! Give it a shake, see what sounds fun. Hit up the #character-discussion channel when you have an idea.
whats a good place to find other people to play dnd with?
Check #find-a-game
Oh ok
I made a guide for places to search in addition to this server: #third-party message
I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask or if the question is missing info but; When/Do Druids gain Cantrips aside from the first 2?
Levels 4 and 10, as noted in the Druid Table in their class info
Where do I find Druid Table cause I’m using the internet for this stuff and I couldn’t find it
Thank you
That should have everything you need!
To clarify, are the Cantrips specifics ones you get to do with stuff like Circles or do you get to just choose another one at those levels?
Nope! You pick whatever you'd like from the Druid spell list.
Thanks
I signed up for an event this weekend at a convention and know dnd, but I need the rules for character creation
Do I start at level 1? The event is for levels 1-4
That's something you have to ask the DM / event organizers.
Ok. I will wait and make my character at the table
Is adventurers league different depending on the Dm, no standard character creation rules?
If it's Adventurer's League, the folks in #adventurers-league can help you get started.

If a D&D game is text-based, how do some games go about rolling? And how complex does DND get? Usually I hear stuff about playing and it seems so complex and a lil overwhelming 😭
there is a decent amount of rules but you learn while playing quite well and there is discord bots that can roll dice or you can always just roll a real dice and show it on camera
The Avrae dice Bot has direct integration with D&D Beyond and helps a lot with text based games. I can attest to it's convenience as I have played the last 3 years with it without a hitch and it just got better over time :)
My friend recommended me this, guess ill need to find some time to read through everything, looks neat.
I think I’ve just been to scared to jump into it tbh but thanks y’all :))
hello, can I have some assistance with my character creation?
If you have questions about character creation, #character-discussion would be the best place to ask
thank you
Hi
Hi
This article mentions microphone and I watched an event last year with a Deaf player who had interpreters.
Is it possible to play D&D without relying on audio? Is there players who play by using chat feature?
Thank you! Off to read more articles in the pin 😍
Some are most are over vc

Is there a way to practice playing DnD? Or you just gotta jump in a game?
Thx
Just look or post something
Besides reading the basic rules, not really
Just jump in
Its a game where the goal is fun, not a sport where you win by outscoring an opponent
what you can do to contribute to the table’s experience is be prepared/organized
oloo
I recently got the player's handbook, dungeon masters guide, out of the Abyss, and Waterdeep Dragon Heist plus a DM screen for 65 dollars was that a good price for everything
I am completely new to d&d so i don't know whats a fair price,
Check the individual prices on Amazon and compare.
All together it beats the MRSP
All for 65 dollars or just one thing?
That’s a good price
Oh yeah dang that is a good price as far as I know
I assume you plan to DM since the DMG and the two adventure books are geared towards DMs.
No i just want it
You shouldn’t read adventure books if you aren’t going to dm them
If you're only going to be player then those three books are useless to you.
They're for DMs not players.
But hey it's your money.
okay i am going to find better deals
It's not a bad deal but may have more material than you "need". At least for now.
what books should i be finding
Player's Handbook, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything are three books players should get.
cause i can also get the monster manual for 15 extra dollars
There's already a book bundle with those three books.
The Monster Manual is for DMs only.
where is the bundle also i want physical copies not just virtual stuff
Amazon, Target, etc.
is there places i can find used for better deals just wondering
Maybe local used book stores?
Hey wait a minute those books are still nice to have even if you just want to be a player
And that was a nice price
You could also decide to DM one day
DMs wouldn't appreciate players looking up adventures and the Monster Manual's statblocks... But again, their money.
Plenty of DMs don't use those adventures, just as reference
I don't think anybody would take issue with a player knowing that they start in a tavern
Can't foresee the future when this particular player will join a table that will use one of those two adventures.
I'm just giving out advice. Noone's obligated to heed it.
We shouldn't be making new players regret things already
It isn't about what we think will happen, it's about the random bull that actually happens at the table for no reason other than it's funny
I'd say all non-adventure books are useful for those considering DMing.
They're also still useful for players too- but for players with a tight budget who want to focus their money on books with more options for them (classes, playable races, and such) then some books like the MM and DMG won't be as useful. (Honestly this is true for DMs with a budget too)
Adventure books are probably best left unread unless you intend to run it some time, to avoid spoiling anything for yourself.
A player reading the MM isn't a problem. The intention to cheat or metagame is seperate to wanting to own a book, read the lore and enjoy the art. It's 100% possible to know all the statblocks and avoid metagaming.
The divide between player and DM isn't a strict one. A DM is a player. Players can be DMs.
Hi I'm new to this group and dnd. i am currently making my first character, but I'm not sure how to do the ability scores.
Check out the first chapter of the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules

heya all! new to the server and learning 5e after years of 3.5 and then PF1 and some PF2e that I really don't like. Anyone coming from PF and decided this is the way? love to hear thoughts as I plan and learn
hey could i dm you? want to ask why you didnt like pf2e but the mods wont let us here
or i could ask you in #non-dnd-topics
Feel free to use #non-dnd-topics - but everywhere else is D&D focused
yeah thats why i asked if we could move
thanks!
wait what is a hexblade
A warlock subclass
oh it sounds cool
^ Hexblade class decsription (assuming you own it)
They get some pact-powered weapons and other flavorful features.
I made a map with cardboard (took over 3 months) Bought some books and characters. And got a starter set. I still need 2 things. 1. Knowledge about how to play. 2. People to play with

Hey all I'm pretty much new to DnD for the exception of a one-shot and an absolute ton of binge-watching with Critical Role LOL Hope to learn a lot 🤘
Welcome! D&D is a lot of fun and I highly recommend exploring and playing with friends!
Thanks! I definitely almost died of laughter when I played my first one shot, and even though I don't have much experience I'm gonna attempt to try out DMing a one shot with a few friends 🤙 We'll see how that goes after I learn enough for it 😂😂
Nice! I'm glad you had a great time with your friends in the one shot!
I'm a ranger and wood elf and I chose sage, but the modifiers seem different from the total score that I have in my skills and the saving throws, when I need to roll plus the modifier for dexterity do I add the +2 on the saving throws or the +0 on the total dexterity?
Idk if I explained myself well
So, saving throws are different from your ability modifiers. For Dexterity based skills that you do not have proficiency in then you add your dexterity modifier which is a +0 in this case. Saving throws are different because those are your odds to prevent a certain condition from happening. Let me know if I didn't explain this well
Thanks!
To list these things separately:
Your Ability Scores determine their respective Modifier.
A Dexterity score of 10 means you have a +0 modifier (so nothing basically). So whenever you make a Dexterity check, you do not add anything - no bonus, no penalty.
However, some Dexterity Checks might be a Dexterity (Skill) check, where the (Skill) might be something like (Stealth) or (Sleight of Hand). The same can go for any other kind of ability check.
If you're proficient in the (Skill) displayed, you can add your Proficiency Bonus to the check's total.
Your +2 in the Dexterity Saving Throws is due to being a Ranger, meaning you are Proficient in Dexterity Saving Throws, meaning you add your Proficiency Bonus to those rolls.
So when you make a Dexterity Check, such as rolling for Initiative, you roll a d20 and don't modify it, no penalty or bonus.
When you make a Dexterity Saving Throw, you roll a d20 and add +2 to the number rolled, giving you your total for the save.
Everyone else has answered the main question, I just wanted to add that as a ranger, you should probably have better dexterity than that
Considering that dexterity is one of the most important stats for a ranger
They could be going for a Strength build though, maybe.
or full wisdom with shillelagh
Fair. Just making sure they properly considered it
Ok thanks
Ok so I'm gonna change my skills and have better dexterity (I sent the pic in #ddb-support what can I change to have "balanced" skills)
Please don’t use random channels to send images
Just listing them here would be fine
For choosing stats, int and Cha don’t matter much to a ranger, you want at least 14 con, preferably 14 Wis but 12 is fine, then consider what weapons you want to decide regarding Str or dex as your main stat
I will say the ranger is very much geared towards dexterity weapons (ranged weapons, plus finesse melee weapons)
How do you play then?
You find a group to play with
Have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Okay thank you
Hey! Pretty new to DnD terms however, have watched many DnD campaigns. Was wondering what people meant with a “one-shot” campaign. I’m assuming it’s like you have one life and if you wipe the campaign is over kind of thing?
One shots typically mean one adventure typically done in one D&D game
So it's a quest that is done in one short session rather than a campaign
Oo gotcha! Thank you!
No problem! Have fun with D&D
Hi 😊
I didn’t understand anything but it’s very interesting

When does the next game or campaign start
We don’t play games here, #find-a-game has details on how to find a game
I think maybe you have a misunderstanding of how D&D works. People run their own games on their own schedule. For example, I played last night with my group. Some people might be playing tonight, or even right now
The point is that it's not a game where things are managed by a server or external schedule
I'm new to the server and I made the sheet on DnD beyond so I thought it was appropriate but as soon as someone told me to switch to this channel I did
I took 2 shortswords and a long bow
I'm kinda playing a "campaign" with a bot on c.ai and as soon as I gather some friends I'm gonna play with them
Yes i watched some vids and read smth in the players handbook
I would also like to join you
Well ig it's kinda hard lol, I meant irl friends cause I already have some that play DND but we're kinda making the group rn
We do ask if people want to set up groups/games, to either using our game finding channels or private message
And not use these channels
Do u think that like this is fine? Strenght 13, dexterity 14, costitution 15, intellingence 10, wisdom 15, charisma 10
Depends on what class you're playing; that wouldn't make a great wizard, but would be a solid ranger
#character-discussion is a good place to ask for pointers
i see players writing entire paragraphs and im terrified i just wanna play dnd to rp and have fun not cowrite a novel
You and me both, but i have no luck finding beginner friendly sessions, or really anyone willing to help me through some of the mechanics that i just don't understand.
Hi! Are there games for newcomers? I haven’t been able to find anything ☹️
#find-a-game is the first place to look. You can browse what's available or put yourself forward as looking for a DM. Make sure to read the instructions in the first post carefully. You could also look at other places such as Roll20. Finding the right result for you can take time, so have patience. Good luck!
My character is a ranger so ig I'll stick to that build
My characters are typically rangers but I'm trying out druid because one time my DM got mad because all the players were rangers and I want some advice about being a druid
youre a full caster and would prefer to not get in melee
you like casting spells that require concentration usually so like have a good con score
you have a decent amount of summoning spells so they might take up some time
you can switch out your spells every long rest so you can test out spells if you want i suppose
just came here to start wondering... Could you technically make a Playable Vending machine as a Character? (Homebrew ofc)
its just hilarious to think about
That's between you and your DM to homebrew.
Anyone have tips to playing d and d
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
No not yet I just started playing
It's a good starting point

Ok thanks
Never forget to bring rope.
Make a character that wants to work with their party. Teamwork is literally the dreamwork in this game.
Different people take different approaches to character creation; diff DMs also ask for different amounts/form of backstory
There is definitely no need for a novel; personally I think thats a not a good approach in most cases
All you really need is:
- some reason why your character would go on an adventure
- a loose idea of their personality
- goals
- weaknesses/dislikes
You dont play your backstory, you play the adventure your DM puts in front of your party. Writing a buncha stuff your character already did kinda goes against the idea of why one would play DnD
some people just enjoy writing even if it wont necessarily ever impact the game
Wish I could find a campaign I’ve been trying for months now. Bout to just say screw it and dm for a group of us newcomers no matter how it turns out
Spread your net wide there are other places to look than here
I’ve tried every dnd discord i can find I’ve only found two campaigns so far and both have been cancelled

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
well the most important questions i have is which character ideas are even possible/allowed
What are your ideas?
like, what sorts of species are allowed, and are they allowed to lolook/act how i intend them to?
That is something you have to ask your DM when you find one.
In the mean time, create a character base on what's in the free Basic Rules.
like.....only one of my character ideas is even remotely close to the races listed.....
Any DnD species are allowed, you can even either take an existing race that works mechanically how you want, and change other stuff (Mostly roleplay stuff), or you can make a whole new race or subrace of an existing race with homebrew, it's all up to your DM to let you use them though
(Take any facts I say with a grain of salt, I'm also new but I've done a decent amount of research)
Theres more than the races in the free book, but from what I hear it's recommended to use those starting out
Again, that is something you have to talk with your DM when you find one. Not all DMs will allow homebrew races.
But I feel like homebrew right off the bat wouldn't be a good idea
How would making a homebrew character work btw?
Learn what the game is like by using the free Basic Rules first before you go hog wild on your OC.
Crawl before you sprint.
i get it,so...guess im going with that one idea, what exactly physically makes a half orc a half orc?
And if you aren't using any of the basic races, I'd suggest asking how beginner friendly they are
(Every race in the beginner handbook is what I'm calling a basic race)
ok...how beginner friendly isis half orc?
Just as beginner friendly like the other playable races in the free Basic Rules.
ok...could someone help me with mamaking a character?
Have you read the Basic Rules yet?
Also do you have a basic character idea?
most of it,sorta like i say my ideas and what im looking for,and you help me figure out what it should have to fit my vision
Also I recommend using some sort of AI chatbot to help with story stuff
Either way could you help?
