Whats the difference between intelliegence and wisdom?
Its always better to ask, than to just be confused
Intelligence is usually formal learning/knowledge. Wisdom is intuition.
int is book smarts, wis is experience
^
street smarts, if you will is wis
Intelligence is your ability to know and recall lore, history, magical knowledge, etc.
Wisdom is your ability to understand people, observe your surroundings, and make intuitions
hmm. im asking cause im making a sheet so i can join a group to play some dnd
ah ic
my only experience was in highschool
i took me a while to fully understand the difference too
I have this "Dragons of Stormwreck" starter set that my friends and I want to start with, and it comes with pre-filled in character sheets. One of my friends, however, would like to play his own character (he doesn't know how to play, but wants to make one and learn along the way anyway). Do we have to use the characters that come with the set, or can we make our own? Side-question: How do you make a character sheet?
The first few chapters of the Basic Rules describe the process of making a character. Those are linked in the pinned messages of the channel. But the DM can decide if that's fine or not.
You can use the premade characters or create your own.
Personally, I don't see any reason to disallow folks making their own character if they're up for engaging in the process, though there is a learing curve involved.
I have basically finished it but I dont know why my health is so low. i know im level one but 9 hp seems weird
That's not unusual. Level one characters are fairly squishy.
Level 1 characters start with max hit points based on their class hit dice.
Try adjusting your constitution. I think that gives more hit points
D&D's design is very much not like video games, if that's your frame of reference.
You Hit Points at level 1 is your class's Hit Die plus your consitution modifier. So, if you are playing a class with a d8 hit die, which is the most common one, and if you have a +1 for your consitution modifier, then you max hit points at level 1 would be 9. If you want that to be higher, you need to either select a class with a larger starting hit die, or increase your constitution modifier.
Starting with 9 HP is a tiny bit under what I would consider average, but its still perfectly reasonable
That's not great. You don't want a -1 CON modifier.
also cause im doing a paladin im confused what to put for faith. I know paladins have a bond or something with their patron but i dont know what to put
patron is warlock
Work that out with your DM.
depends on your oath
You don't need all the details ironed out before you get into a game/group.
ah okay
i usually put that as N/A unless they are actually religious
"faith" is a role play detail. It doesn't affect your game mechanics at all. It just refers to what god you worship or follow.
trying to find a group. I cant do it in person so i was wondering if i could find one here
your faith is usually reflected from your gameplay and subclass tho
there should be a list of gods if i search them up right?
Yep, Colossus explained the looking-for channels just a few messages ago. #dnd-newcomers message
It depends on the setting. Not every D&D game is played in the same universe
Talk with your DM. Their campaign setting is different from other tables'.
yeah, but it depends on your DM's settings
true. guess i will leave it blank for now
Don't be tied to your first character because when you do finally have a DM they may tell you to create a new character.
i have that experience before lol
I make no assumptions.
yeah
Okay i think i finished it. I had a question about rolling. When do i roll? I roll for attacking, being attacked, the skills i have but what else?
When the DM tells you to roll.
ah that makes it much more clear
During combat you roll on your turn, whether for a weapon / spell attack, or if you need to make a saving throw from an enemy's spell.
If you do something the DM may ask you to roll for an ability skill check. They'll tell you which ability to roll for.
There are 3 primary types of rolls you will do with your D20:
- Attack Rolls
- Ability Checks
- Saving Throws
Hello, Can our characters have immunities and weaknesses? (Like Pokémon?)
Attack rolls happen whenever you make an attack
Ability checks happen when you want to take an action that is not defined by another game feature or ability
Saving throws happen whenever a harmful effect is about to happen to you and you have a chance to resist it
they can has resistances
Oh great cuz my character is a human corpse in a biological grass body and I have the argue to make him immune to acid-based spells but I feel like it’s a stupid thing to do
Vulnerability, Resistance, and Immunity are things that exist in this game, though they are far more common on monsters than they are on player characters. Some features will grant them to you though.
asicd and poison are ver different
Whether your DM allows that might be a big ask. Some don't allow homebrew and ask you to use official material only.
Oh there is a poison type? Okay great I am still learning lol
Hello
Wait fr? I don’t know I am new.
One of the important things to learn about D&D is that things only exist when the game rules says so. You can't get a resistance or immunity to a damage type just because it makes sense for the character you created. You need to get a feature from your class or subclass or something like that which specifically says you gain that ability
Oh ok thx
So he is a grass man that isn’t weak to fire spells?
I dont think so
When trying to do the command for looking for players where do i do it?
ofc thx btw
You can use it in any channel.
Im looking for a game
Wait did i see someone called bahamut?
wha
#find-a-game is where to start your search.
"Grass man" isn't one of the playable races in D&D, so you would either need to make your own race, or take one of the normal races and reflavor it to what you want.
If you are making your own race, that is called "homebrew" and its not something that all DMs allow, so you will need to talk to yours about it first.
If you are reflavoring an existing race, you would use all the mechanics and abilities from that race as they exist in the normal rules. There is no existing race with vulnerability to fire, so you would not have that vulnerability if you played that race, even if you reflavored it.
Bahamut is the good-aligned metallic dragon deity.
Bahmut, also called "the platinum dragon" is one of the good aligned gods in the Forgotten Realms setting
Actually he is a human wizard that died and used his magic to make a biological grass body before dying so he is technically a human using a spell
Ik I am pretty stupid sorry ;-;
I would recommend looking into the Reborn lineage from Van Richtan's Guide to Ravenloft for the most accurate race to what you want to do. But if you want a free option, just use the normal stats and abilities for the Human race
Ok thx
Remember to consult with your DM first if they will allow such a character.
question, if im 'sneaking' through an empty hallway with no one around, is it still needed to roll stealth?
Up to the DM.
It’s very unique, and could be fun if handled right, but it is a bit outside of what we would consider normal for a D&D character, so it’s very possible that a DM might not allow it, especially if they are a newer DM and don’t want to venture outside of the normal rules while they are just getting started.
A DM might make you roll for Stealth 'cause people are nearby. They might also make you roll for Stealth to make you think that people are there.
well me and my dm argued over this, he said that its not logical. while i begged to differ
The corridor might not have anyone there. But the rooms next to the corridor might have people in it.
in the first place, how do you know that it was empty in the first place
Your DM may ask you to roll. As far as you know you don't know if anyone else is around (perhaps there's someone stealthed/invisible in the hallway you don't see).
It’s not a good idea to argue with your DM over things like this, imo.
Idk I am new but what if someone is nearby and your character can’t see it?
Idk just saying
its a tight hallway with 1 door, im sure no one is there besides my self since it also is a secret passage way
As a DM I sometimes ask my players to roll for something for no reason to keep them on their toes. 😛
but true, i might not know of an enemies presence
This is outside the purpose of this channel
If your DM ask you to roll then roll.
This channel is for helping newcomers understand the basics
If you want advice on reconciling a disagreement with your DM, #dnd-discussion would be a good place to ask
well the question was answered, so no need to continue it further ig
If you want to learn how specific rules work, we have #dnd-rules
Up to the group, but probably yes?
Hi there, sorry to just pop in. I’m new here and have been interested in DND sometime now with my husband and my 9yr old. (I know tmi) but my son is really enjoying our beginner dnd board game and has sat with me to watch critical role and he wants us to really get into it. Any advice on how to get started or how to even make friends who like this 😅😅😅 mind you my husband wants to build a set out of legos just for dnd campaigns with our son 🤣🤣🤣
Online it’s easy to find people, in person it’s more difficult, but in my experience you just have to accept being “perceived as a nerd”(not a bad thing, it’s totally worth it to me), and just mention it to other people and how much fun it can be, and you’d be surprised how many people will consider trying it
Oh we’re major nerds 😅😅😅 no worries about that! Hahaha just difficult getting in when we don’t know where to go hahahaha if you catch my drift.

Tbh ima a SAHM, I homeschool my kiddo… and I just had a baby so I hadn’t been social lately lol 😬😬😬
If you want something closer to your son's reading level (I assume), the Young Adventurer's Guides might be worth a look.

This is fantastic he loves to read! ❤️
Im not a parent, maybe I will be someday, so I don’t have specific advice, but making friends anyway you can (food works well for me 😂) goes a long way towards any game you’ll ever want to play
Also congrats on being a parent of 2!
how do i find dm?
Go to “find-a-game” then click on “looking for players” you can find a dungeon master searching for players there
ty
I am new too so it’s good to help another newbie
were is the looking for players button im also new to discord lol

Let me imagine an artificer, basically someone who make weaponize of everything?
not really.
Then can he use a bone of someone power to create a weapon that will reanimated their past power, like blade from the bone of powerful paladin.
Aww
artificers are more turning mundane items into magical items
A boat into flying boat
that would depend on your DM
I saw sheets saying genetigist artificer
that sounds like homebrew
Yeah i thought so, since it's sound like something that not really in the game
Hey, hey! I've been playing my first ever dnd game on saturday, and our DM made me a prebuilt character so I was wondering if anyone has any tips and tricks on best way to play rogue? Never before I've played anything dnd like besides divinity and bg3.
The folks in #character-discussion should be able to help.
Do you mean in combat, or in general? You're starting at level 1, I assume?
So we're starting at level 6 I think for some reason xD
Rogues tend to like fighting from range, because it’s easier to trigger Sneak Attack that way. You want to pay attention to the position of your allies, and attack any creatures near them. Once you reach level 2, rogues get the ability Cunning Action, which lets you do several things as a bonus action, that normally take an action. One of which is Hide. You can use you bonus action to Hide, which will grant you advantage on your next attack, which means it helps you trigger sneak attack.
yeah
Yes. It’s a very straightforward class
yall ok with reading a back ground im making?
It would be better to post that in #character-discussion
alright
when do characters get feats in dnd
When they would otherwise get an Ability Score Increase according to their class rules.
ok so i get 1 feat at level 1 and at level 5 i get 2 feats and level 9 i get 3 and so on or i only get 1 feat when i reach level 4?
every time you get a feature that says "Ability Score Improvement"
One feat at the appropriate moment. It's typically levels 4, 8, 12, and 16 (if my memory is right).
Okay thanks
and 19

At lv6, the rogue has “stuff to do” in every phase of your action economy so its a good learning opportunity:
Review the class features to get a feel for when its abilities can be used during your action, bonus action and reaction
so whats the rules on a voice call to ask some questions about charater sheets and so on x

Hey I'm kinda doing the math here, and since you can get your character to have up to +10 in strength wisdom intelligence, etc, and you can have your proficiency bonus be +12 with the "Double proficiency bonus" skills... Wouldn't that be close to an automatic ability check?
Typically +5 is the highest you’ll get for an ability score.
Without the use of special magic items or special class features (like the barbarian capstone), the ability score cap is 20 (+5).
There are no automatic ability check successes. A DM can say something is impossible regardless of the roll.
If something is impossible, you just wouldn’t roll for it at all. Rolling implies it’s possible
But whether or not you roll is up to the DM. If, for example, you wanted to push a boulder, that would normally be a strength check of some sort, but if you aren’t strong enough to do it, you DM may just describe how you try and fail, without asking for you to roll
hello
Hi
Hey I just started getting into DnD, alongside reading parts of the players handbook, is Monk a good starter class?
it is not to complicated and can be fun so sure why not
Oh okay that’s good. I’ve heard some mix stuff about Monk but I really want to play the class where they throw hands with demons and magical beings
I’m looking to start playing dnd and I would like to know how I should start

I don't know much about the game at all
What is the best way to make a character sheet online
Either use D&D Beyond (free account) or use a fillable PDF
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
Thank you
How do you even find a good printable character sheet
Just look up dnd character sheet
I did I don't know which one is good because I don't know much about the game other than it's an imagination game where you can do anything if you roll a high enough number

I also follow alot of ren fair and dnd accounts on tiktok
@fossil venture Oi.
Hi
They can help you here.
Oh thank you
There are a few ways to generate ability scores. I remember rolling and point buy. Isn't there at least one other way?
Standard Array.
Anyone want to be my DM?
Please use the LFG channels to find a group/game to join. Read #find-a-game for more information.
So with point buy...
What is the lowest value you can put an ability score to?

Thank you :>
I’m sorry to pester, but are there any good ways to find people to participate with other than the “Looking for ‘placeholder,’” sections?
I made a whole guide for just that purpose: #third-party-tools-archive message
Thank you so much.
im new to dnd so and ive seen titkoks and other stuff on people being able to tame monsters or just animals in genral. whats the best way to do that or is there anything that deals with animals like a class or something?
theres no rules for taming animals
there are some spells and class features that help with interacting with animals however
and some subclasses (beastmaster ranger) where you by default have an animal companion
yeah, i believe so
ok cool thank you ^^
yeah you can get the spells animal friendship and speak with animals
ok cause in the game that i just started i ended up giving a gaint spider meat and then was able to make a pole with meat on the end of it and ride the spider but i dont know how i would know if its tamed
thats all homebrew, so ask your dm
really? wait what part of it is homebrew?
sorry if im asking alot of questions btw i just wanna understand the best i can
I think they are referring to your building a lure to ride and drive the giant spider.
thats not a normal thing?
there are no rules for taming and riding wild animals, so that is homebrew
it is in Minecraft with a pig. There is nothing in the rules that lays out the mechanics for doing that. It's something you would ask a DM if you can do, and they ask for rolls to see if it works.
oh ok, sorry if these were dumb questions i just dont know this game at all
not at all dumb questions
is there a way to know if its like tamed or am i looking at like to much like a video game? like how would i know ive tamed a animal and its my friend or is that also just something up to the DM and im looking into this to deeply
as ive said, there are no rules for taming animals, so we have no idea how your dm is running it. ask them
ok thank you ^^ have a good day
you too
The DM will have to work out any rules relating to training animals and how well they work.
There are stats for animals. There are rules from older versions, and although not entirely the same, there are DM rules for minion loyalty.
While I could guess at their rules and reasoning, I would likely be wrong. My best guess is it will involve handle animal checks
have you read the basic rules?
tysm ^^
ive mostly read the lore, i know almost nothing when it comes to the game mechanics.

So question, I've already created a character in dnd beyond, how would I go about uploading it to the server? Do I even have to, or can I just find a game and share it with the DM/other players?
You use the sheet to play the game - you can print it off if playing in-person. You can use it on your mobile device with the DnDBeyond app in person or online. You can use the Avrae Discord bot on a server to connect the bot to your character sheet and load your character into Avrae and play that way. Ultimately talk with your DM or group you're playing D&D with and find out how they like to play and they can help you figure out the best way to use your character sheet in their game.

^ @simple coral see the message above - it has some useful resources to help get you started. I recommend reviewing the free basic rules (see link in the bot message) and maybe watching some D&D liveplay streams on YouTube/Twitch. Then try your hand at making a character (make sure to reference the free basic rules). Then find a group and start playing! Hope this helps!
So I wanna try dnd but I can only use free recourses, also how many people are needed for dnd?
Thx
1 Dungeon Master and at least 1 player. The game is deigned for 4-6 players generally.
You can start playing with just the free basic rules.
Also do you know how to play cs2 😏
Not on topic.
Jk ik
Well let's make sure to follow the server rules so I as a mod don't have to do more work tonight eh? 😉
Thank you
Bro how u gonna get paid if you don't do any work???
You NEED us to break the rules
Last bit and then we really must get back on topic - but what I'm trying to convey is I'd rather not have to issue warnings, mutes, and bans.
Yeah and if you have any specific questions (like "what does AC mean?") feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel (see id:browse to see all the many channels we have for specific D&D topics).
One more question, I don't have the ability to get roles, is there a specific way for me to do that?
It's good - thank you all for helping out!
How do I use that?
Go to that channel and click on the roles you want.
It would seem that I don't have access to that channel
Make sure your Discord client is up to date (sometimes you have to uninstall Discord and reinstall it to get it to work correctly).
Probably ask in #ddb-avrae-help
Is it possible to have 2 feats? If so, when can i get my 2nd?
A feat can be taken whenever you would gain an ASI
Feats are an optional rule - DMs can allow them whenever but the optional rules states that on a level up where you can boost your attributes/skills you can take a feat instead.
most classes get them every 4 levels
Note a feat is taken INSTEAD of an ability score improvement
Oh ok
Where do I go if I want to join a campaign??? because it’s not allowing me to type in the” find a game”section.
Please read (carefully) #find-a-game - it explains how to use our LFG channels.
Question. When there’s a game of dnd and the DM is doing something like “The Ghost of Saltmarsh”, do players need to own the book for it in order to play it?
Nope.
Many would argue it’s better if the players don’t have it. 😅
How come? Would it contain spoilers or something? are they like books exclusive for DM’s?
You would spoil the adventure for yourself, which is probably less than fun. Plus, learning stuff you’re not meant to know is really bad form.
If you’re a player, you don’t need access to any adventure book/module.
Ok, so the player handbook is all I need?
Correct!
And not even that technically, as the Basic Rules are free. But that’d be the one book you’d need to have access to.
Well the basic rules actually is all you need to play
But the players handbook is very useful
Okay good. Cuz I do own only the players handbook
Then you’re set.
Another thing, when I sign up for a campaign, do I make my character sheet before or after signing up?
After. Your DM may have stipulations about how to generate stats, race restrictions, etc.
But you should know how to make a character and have some loose concepts prior.
Okay I understand.
Even worse than spoiling it for yourself is spoiling it for the rest of the group.
Whether or not you tell them directly, the game is changed just because you know.
You can practice making characters, but understand the DM may have guidelines that require you do change or start over
Okay good, that’s what I was doing
I’m already aware of Dnd beyond and roll20 and how they do and stuff as well
is there a way for me to remove the wizard symbol next to my name
that link didnt work for me
It’s is at the top of the server sidebar above all the other channels
thank you i see it
How did you get the link spam?
It shows up for me when I type a hashtag and a C.
anybody have tips for creating your first character? I'm more than willing to figure out more difficult mechanics, but if ppl have any tips on what sort of classes/races might be hard for a newcomer, I'd love to know :D
At the end of the day the rules are designed to be usable and learned. If you're willing to put in the time to learn there shouldn't be any race/class that is impossible to learn, even for a first-timer.
Generally, the full-caster classes like wizard, cleric and druid are considered harder to learn, because you have a wide selection of spells to choose. This is difficult to learn because every spell is like its own little super-specific rule. Compare this to something like a fighter where there is only 1 optional choice to make in the first two levels and you can start to see why people suggest to play martials for your first time.
you put it into the palm of your hand, shake it a bit, then let it tumble off your hand into the table
Real or digital
Digital
oh
I know how to roll a dice irl lol
uhhhh i think you press the butoton
Which one
Here or in a different platform
If its DNDBeyond, the modifier (the +X)
Here
Sorry, I thought it was a trick question of some kind
I don’t think you can roll dice here maybe in #ddb-avrae-commands
Oh ok thx
Nah I am too stupid for trick questions lol
If you have your own discord you can add avrae or a simpler dice roller like dice maiden
Is 13 good?
Oh ok
depends on what your rolling for. But its average
Ok thx
Not 100% new but still am fairly new, any guides for leading a better campaign?

i have now created character
sup
Is it normal for enemies to do like 30 damage in one hit around level 4ish? Sometimes to multiple characters? Even 20+, is that normal to happen fairly often in one hit?
You can have a look at monster stat blocks and see what their average damage is
However, "normal" depends entirely on the type of campaign you're playing in
Every table is different but you can look at the monster statblock and check the damage and see if that's about average for that type of monster (e.g. the damage number before the dice equation for the weapon attack). So take a troll's claw attack:
Claw: Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage.
The average damage is 11. And since a troll has multiattack (one bite, two claw attacks) then yes, the damage could be 20 or higher assuming the attacks hit.
Let's take a CR 3 Akroan Hoplite
It has Spear which does on average 7 damage and shield bash that does 5. However it can attack 3 times meaning it can do an average of 21 damage
Hello I've been interested in playing dnd for a few years now, but I'm not really sure where to start or begin.
Help please 🙏
This probably won't be super popular here, but I'm watching Critical Role Campaign 3, and like 70+% of enemy hits are like 11 of this (piercing, whatever) damage, and 14 of this (acid, whatever) damage, it's like every fight, so I'm just curious if it's that normal, that it happens all the time
Hello I'm new here
they're at a decent level by this point, and with low encounters per day, each encounter can be more deadly to compensate, kinda. So for combining the power of many encounters in a day to only few encounters, monsters end up with more damage since they're scarier monsters.
They're level 4 where I am
That makes sense, they only do like 1 combat sequence per day
Sorry, I keep tagging, can you turn off auto-tag?
Just watched some dnd guides
And it is for sure overwhelmingly
Like weapons even have weight
level 4 characters with decent HP can have like, a nice 30+hp
so a single "boss" encounter in a day can probably be a chunky one like that
pinging
and you can hold shift when clicking reply to make it be off, or hit the blue @on to turn it to @off
I have to turn it off every message, I'm on mobile, and I keep forgetting, I wish I could change the default
I could just not reply, but then they sometimes get lost, turning off the auto ping would be much easier
Sorry, back to D&D
👋 hey me as well
So hmm what do you wanna talk about I'm still currently making a character
In the website the discord gave
Anything pretty much oh what website .....I'm thinking I should probably make a character too
What website is this?
Check the pinned messages
Character Sheet?
Dndbeyond
Ty
Thank u
No prob just make an acc then you can start making ur character
Just got on there and realised I already had an account 😭 but no character yet
Ah okay okay I'm still stuck on mine rn names are hard ngl
In the races why is there no automaton?
That always takes me a couple hours, every game
Thanks, that's crazy
Just got through that but whats the difference between advancement in XP or milestones ?
What's the least played race? I want an unusual character (nothing silly, just uncommon)
It’s the way a DM will increase your PC lvl, xp is like video game kill monster get points, milestone is more story based get to a certain point and you lvl up
There is warforged and autognome but they are not free options and cost 1.99 each
Dayum sadge I really wanted to play as one
guys i see there are many newcomers today
Yeah hi
yall think we could have a game?
I don't have the book yet, right now I'm just watching things, so I'm very newcomer status
Same
Helooo
Still navigating pretty much everything
Maybe after we are finished understanding
I've been playing RPG video games for 25+ years, but just finally breaking into TT, so I'm just learning the different rules
Thats crazy
I know, I'm so incredibly late for my age
I bought/painted TT figures many years ago, and a few years ago, but never actually played TT
Sure I would love luv to
Hey um what's better in everyone's opinion manual or exp for lvling up
Oh ok ok nice
Thanks
Ok I pick an eldarin character with the class of rougue and ranger but the stats I need help with
Adding my character is lvl 2 I dunno why
I'd love to try, if everything else works out, put me on the long list
No one answered, what's the least played race? I want something kinda out there, not trying to do something super crazy, just not the super norm
Well, yea, I'm sure that's impossible, but just generally, what is rare to see?
I saw Genasi, for example, and had to learn what that is, I had never heard of it
They keep track of stats on D&D Beyond about player races used there. The last time they published their data, the least played race was Aasimar, but that was 5+ years ago. Since then many more races have been released, and the Aasimar has been redesigned
To be honest your race although giving you some traits, in the majority of games won’t really come up, try to come up with a concept you find interesting and choose the race and class that best fit it
Thank you, this is why I'm asking, they were new to me
This may sound stupid, but I kinda wanna do the opposite, I wanna pick a race that isn't super common, then a class that works well with it, then build the story from there. I know it's NOT the best/easiest way, but I would like to do it that way, if possible
The least played race in the game is probably just going to be one of the new ones, since people have had it for less time. Probably something from Spelljammer
Gnome barbarian, satyr paladin
Bard and monk are very interesting to me, I'll look onto these, thank you
Goliath sorcerer, half orc bard
Goliath sorcerer? That sounds very unique, but I was looking for classes that kinda fit, not trying to be just out there as I can be, does that really work?
Any race can work with any class
I'm not trying to do something crazy, I'm brand new, I'm just looking for uncommon, it works, but people usually don't do it
But we’re gong a bit above newcomer stuff
That's why I'm starting with race, what do you not see very often? Then I'll build off that
Is this basic rules only?
I'm not trying to go that far, I'm new, but I want something unique, but not unique just to be unique, I also want it to work, so I'm asking race first to build off that
How about Aasimar? I think that race is uncommon considering he is something celestial something
oh
Nevermind then
For my question, sure, I'm not particular, so basic rules is fine for my question
I think mines very common i chose a wood elf and sorcerer as a class
I’m only asking cause of your using dndbeyond and only have the basic rules your options are limited
They're so limited, very true, but using dndbeyond is just a practice exercise, I'll be using the book when I make the final character
this would be better suited to #character-discussion
Even just asking for an uncommon race? You're the pro, just asking, seems like a newcomer question, but I can move it, no worries
I'm not the pro, I'm the mod
So yes, asking for what race you should pick for your character would be a topic for #character-discussion
Ok, I'll move it (I think mod includes the label "pro", though 😝)
It does not, being a moderator does not have any bearing on our advice or opinions on D&D
Isn't a pretty good knowledge a requirement? That's pro compared to me.
No
Moving on
Is making suggestions to other party members allowed? And if so, how do you do it?
Are you asking if you can talk in-character in D&D?
No, just in particular, recommendations, without stepping on toes too
Your question is....odd
Yes, you can talk to your fellow players, that is not something the game puts any restrictions on
Like, I feel like "Hey X, you should maybe do Y to Z..." seems out of turn
That would depend entirely on
- Who you're talking to
- What you're suggesting
- How you suggest it
- Why you're suggesting it
- Where you're suggesting, aka the context
Ok, say we enter a new room, and I think there's probably a hidden door, but my perception/investigation is crap, but a party member is much better, can I be like "Hey, friend, wanna look for doors?"
- Yes you could do that
- No you shouldn't do that
Pick one based on the following factors:
- The nature of the person you're talking to
- Your relationship with the person you're talking to
- The context of you and this person
- The other people involved
You're asking "Can I have social interactions at that table involving how the game is played?" to which the answer is "Yes, that's kinda the point, but we can't tell you how to have those social interactions"
Do you get where I'm coming from?
So I shouldn't do that? This is why I'm asking
I'm saying no one here can tell you if you should or shouldn't
Because it depends
For example, so the other person is new to the game and doesn't understand the full scope of how things work. That'd be great advice
But on the other hand, say this person knows what they're doing and is tired of people trying to backseat play their character. That'd be an annoying thing to say
See what I mean?
Ok, yea, I totally get that. What if we're both brand new? I'm no expert, I just suspect something
No one can tell you how you should interact with another person
Ask them if they want advice or suggestions, then listen
The obvious best answer, ty, that's the best and easiest way to find out
Thanks
I was thinking too far into it, just asking gets the best answer
Hooray for communication 😎
communiWHO?
Hey guys, im totally new to D&D, any idea where/how to start it?
Welcome! There’s some helpful links here to get you started:
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
But if you’ve got any specific questions, ask away!
I've learned a ton from Critical Role, but it's not like a normal campaign, but I've learned a lot, personally
Fellow newcomer
Thx for the help
I haven't actually played yet, but I think I have learned a lot from just watching, others will correct me if I'm wrong
Does anyone have any tips on how i can make character feel more human?
In what way?
What do you define as "more human"?
I dont want them to feel stale
You probably need to rephrase your question
By 'feel stale', you probably mean 'feel unoriginal or boring', right?
Assuming that's what you mean, there's nothing "not human" about being unoriginal or boring
Yes, and also like a real person
Okay, so you want them to feel complex and real?
Yes
Like they have depth
Precisely
I would look at the traits, bonds, ideals, and flaws of the various backgrounds. Those are a good way to make a character feel like they have depth
Ok thanks
I'd also make two suggestions:
-
Trying to integrate contradictions. No one is one thing all the time. They don't have to be major contradictions, but if (for example) your character is naturally happy, finding an opportunity for them to feel sincere melancholy about something adds a layer to them that was not visible before.
-
Letting the character evolve through play. Sometimes we get an idea of a character in our head and play them that way without letting the events of the game influence their decisions, their behavior. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but one route to complexity is to be shaped by experiences, rather than impervious to them.
Yo how do feats work?
If your DM is using them (they are an optional rule) when you get to a lvl we’re you can take an ASI you can take a feat instead
What is an ASI? (Sorry lol)
ability score improvement which you gain at certain class levels
So feats are like points where we use them to choose which ability we would like to upgrade?
How is avrae used with a discord chat game?
it is a dice roller and helps keep track of certain things
Ok awesome thanks! Yeah discord voice chat
Feats are like extra abilities
ASI gives you 2 points to put into your ability scores, a feat is a like a new skill/ability you gain
Is it possible to play without the discord VC? I don't like to vc people I don't know.
text based games exist and can be quite fun
Um so you use feats to gain new abilities? Like learn a new spell?
no a feat is the new ability
and what exactly is a feat?
No, a feat is a new ability. Think like your racial traits and class features. Only difference is that you can pick from a variety of options.
when you get a asi you can choose to either increase your scores OR take a feat
So for example..I could learn a new language?
Look up a list of 5e feats
and when you take a feat you choose from a list of options and t hat gives you certain capabilities
depedningon what you chose
Not necessarily. There are concrete feats that you'll have to choose from.
Oh ok
I speak Goblin
there is a list that you choose from
Tho I think some give you new languages? I don't know every feat
some give you in combat buffs or you gain some skills it really differs per feat and if you want to take one you should read up on them
Lol I speak abyssal (idk what that is but it sounds cool)
Demon language pog
Hello Everyone 👋
I'm very new to DnD and played my first campaign and would like advice on spells for my level 3 Eladrin Druid circle of moon please 😃 thanks in advance and
I imagine they sound like the Abyss mages from Genshin Impact or something.
hi there and welcome! we have a whole channel dedicated to advice in these cases - head on over to #character-discussion
Sorry and thanks!
no worries at all! 🙂
I believe they sound like the skin walkers in my basement
We're nothing like them
hii! i’m completely new to dnd but as an artist/writer it seems rlly interesting!!! i just don’t know where to start lol can anyone point me in the right direction
Have you read the basic rules?
Check the pinned comments for links to them and video guides
okay thank you!!
Hello idk if i can ask this here or where do i ask it, but I don’t really know what a community game is, could someone explain?
How would I create leatherface as a dnd character
Ask in #character-discussion
Name three notable characteristics or traits.
I used human race for a character that is a dead human corpse trapped in a biological grass body but idk use the race closer to your needs
That's not a newcomer question. Try #character-discussion
I am new and wondering if i can find my first game here?
You can. #find-a-game is where to start the search for other folks.
@harsh fjord oh thanks
Hi, i'm a first time dm and tried to send a message in the #looking-for-players , but discord told me I wasn't allowed. Anyone who knows what to do?
Hiya! I’m a player looking for a game and I had the same problem in the looking for dm area
Hello everyone, ill also add onto that. New player and im totally lost, my town doesnt have any groups. would love to learn
Me too
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
yup, i do know the basics all around
Mhm
No, where can I find those
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
well, i do know the basics, i do have some questions that mostly depend on the dm. i read alot of this stuff but never yet played
thats what i would well, like help with
Sorry, I thought you meant the discords's rules, I am familiar with the dnd rules though
Same
If you're looking for a game to join check out #find-a-game
oh okay, thank you
are things like timezones possible to control when finding a game?
this is primarily an american server right?
Thing is though, when I go to #looking-for-players through #find-a-game , i'm not allowed to sent messages there
Its a mix, though does tend to swing more american but that might just be a population thing.
hmmm, wont that be a problem? due to my timezone issue?
No there are other timezones represented.
You have to follow the instructions there by clicking the desired looking-for phrasing or typing /looking-for and selecting the appropriate one. @lyric fjord @wise dragon
Just look for a game that starts at a time you can make.
okay okay
thank you a bunch, just one last question, is it fine if im just a bit new? are most people okay with that? oh also, im not natively english, that isnt a problem with most people?
Some folks will be fine with it, and those are the ones you should play with.
oh also, is this server age restricted in anyway?
found out the problem, you'll have to go to #find-a-game , then type the desired bot command there, the bot wil send a message in #750812887697588356 / #looking-for-players for you
apart from the normal 13+ for owning dc
How should I go about picking my faith when it comes to being a cleric?
Work it out with your DM. If you don't have a DM yet, don't fill it in.
Okay thank you so much
Say my character has a musket
Do I have to use up an action to load it and another to shoot it?
Or is it all one action
Loading. Because of the time required to load this weapon, you can fire only one piece of ammunition from it when you use an action, bonus action, or reaction to fire it, regardless of the number of attacks you can normally make
Also:
Ammunition. You can use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a ranged attack only if you have ammunition to fire from the weapon. Each time you attack with the weapon, you expend one piece of ammunition. Drawing the ammunition from a quiver, case, or other container is part of the attack (you need a free hand to load a one-handed weapon).
Taken together, as part of an attack, you load a piece of ammunition and fire the weapon. You can only do this for one attack on a turn.
anyone have tips for creating an interesting character?
like backstory/characteristic wise (not classes)
think of a trope, but your own twist into it
my personal philosophy is to put a little bit of yourself in any character you make. that way, the character is a lot more relatable to you, and easier to roleplay because of it
and branching on that, try taking a trait you hold and exaggerating it, potentially until it's a flaw
for example, my last character i played embodied my trait that i love and owe so much to my friends. however, that trait was exaggerated in him to the point where it became a flaw
ok thank you
Good video by dungeon dudes on making a backstory https://youtu.be/p3N3gv1dTr8?si=PbQ5NzxHmxcQEEWk
another tip i always give is to see how you can fit your character to the world they're in
you can have a vivid and interesting backstory, but if it's a-thematic to the world you're trying to put it in, it's going to be hard to use
Also, no matter what else you put in to the character, make a character that wants to be part of the story the DM is telling
thank you will definitely apply this

Is there way to get a discount on digital books for D&D beyond (i already did the 50% off for the handbook)
@foggy saffron oh ok
D&D Beyond has seasonal sales. They usually have one for CyberMonday and before Christmas.
I dig Pointy Hat's advice if you haven't already seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLVJrK22gVA
You can also just search YouTube for character-creation videos. There's plenty out there.
yeah i’ve been watching pointy hat but thank you for the help
Does anyone have an idea of when portal keys first appeared in dnd?
What do you mean by "portal keys"?
They are an item in planescape
This would be a good question to post on #dnd-elder-editions or #dnd-lore
Indeed - this channel is for helping new to D&D folks get started.
Thnx
morning
Hello
im looking for a game too
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
ive tried that already
Keep trying. It may takes days or weeks to find a table.

But if you’ve got any specific questions, ask away!
Hey, I’m pretty new to dnd and I would like to learn how to be a dm so I can host a game for my 2 sisters, can anyone give me some help? I know a few things but still need to learn stuff like advantages and what dice to roll for what and how spells and encounters and whatever other things you might need to know. Can anyone help me with that?
have you read through the basic rules?
I made a DnD board. Took 6 hours. The book I made took a week
For your two sisters? Just learn the rules, everything else is up to you. Do what you think is fun
The one thing I've learned from joining this community is that fun is the most important thing
If the players are having fun, you're doing a good job. Obviously challenges are necessary, but fun is #1
Yeah, I’d be hosting for my 2 sisters, but it’s mostly because I want to run a campaign 😅. I’ve read some of the rules, and watched some videos, but a lot still goes over my head. Is there any videos you know about or a book/webpage that might be more helpful? I’ve tried looking to the players handbook, but it’s still pretty confusing
From time to time go left instead of right or rob that npc keep your dm guessing Don't just follow the path
Maybe look at the handbook helper video series
Being a DM requires more knowledge, as of course you are running the plot, the world, the people, and the monsters, while the players are only playing a single character in mechanics and personality.
You'll need to know your world (or more specifically, the relevant part of the world that's accessible within the foreseeable future)
You'll need to know your plot (be it a prewritten adventure or one you make yourself)
You'll need to know your NPCs to act as them
You'll need to know the monsters you're using and how their mechanics work
Thanks, I found a pre written campaign on dndbeyond that looks good so I’ll have to read over that, but the handbooker helper videos seem like they’re probably what I need. Thanks for the help
Please tell me/us how much they help
Hi everyone! I'm completely new to DnD. I've been watching Dimension20 and was interested in playing myself but I don't know where and how to start. I tried making a character on DndBeyond but didn't fully understand some things in it. If anybody would like to explain some basics and if a DM was running a campaign for beginners please let me know!!
Have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
DnD beyond isn’t meant to fully explain everything; it’s just a character sheet builder to be used alongside the basic rules
I see
How long is the rulebook now?
Which rulebook?
5e? Whatever the main newest one is?
There are multiple rulebooks
I guess the most basic one?
Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything...
Players
If you google "Player's Handbook Page Count" you'll find it's 316 pages long
316 pages? Wow. Does it explain most everything?
All the basics for players
For a basic player, I mean.
Yes, it covers everything a player needs to know
But you can also just use the Basic Rules on D&D Beyond
I want to buy the book, I've heard WotC has been pretty iffy lately, but I still wanna support D&D
Just personally
"WotC being iffy" isnt' a topic for this channel, but if you want to buy a book, buy a book because you need it, not because you want to "support D&D"
I'm saying take the "support D&D" part out of the equation
Get the books that you think will help you best enjoy D&D
I still need it
Yes, that was my point?
Yea
If you're going to be a player, the Player's Handbook is a useful book to have. It has all the core rules for a player and provides lots of options
TY
my ac is just the armors ac + dex modifier correct?
Usually yeah!
usually?
But take note: there are some things that will change that. For example...
- Medium Armor can only benefit from up to a +2 from your Dex, even if your Dex bonus is higher
- Heavy armor doesn't benefit from Dex at all
- Shields and some features can add to your AC on top of your armor
how about light armor?
Light Armor benefits from your full Dexterity modifier
There is a str requirement for heavy armour if you don’t meet it you lose movement speed
ah but no bonus?
Nope it’s a flat AC score
huh, alr thx!

Hello
Hi I haven't done anything D&D before but I'm going to get some stuff for Christmas. Any tips for me to get specific to get and tips for me since I'm planning on being DM?
Watch beginner videos on YouTube, read some of the basic rules and things like that. DnD Beyond is the website/app online that is really nice and easy to use when playing, messing around with that can make things make more sense too, especially after reading some of the basic rules that are on their and exploring making a character hands-on. That's what I did :)
The Player's Handbook and the Dungeon Master's Guide are fantastic books to have to start off. I know there are some bundles that include extra stuff, but I don't know the specifics.
If you're looking for books to expand your content, Xanathar's Guide and Tasha's Cauldron are amazing.
Thanks guys
Of course! I'm happy to try to answer any questions you might have :)
btw, if I wanted to do a campaign over discord is that possible?
I know there are people that do that, yes. You can use the voicechat and maybe the camera to do it online over discord if that's something that you would prefer to do or that works better for your group
Also, does everyone need dice if you do it over VC?
It depends. If you use the website/app called DnD Beyond that I talked about (which I personally highly recommend especially for new players), then no. The website itself has virtual dice ready to use. Having physical dice can be nice and fun but it is not completely necessary especially if you aren't wanting to buy a lot of things for it
Thank you so much man
Digital dice are free to use and widely available
Yes, please do! I'm always happy to try to answer questions and talk about it :) I don't know everything, but I do know a pretty good amount. And I feel fairly confident in my ability to get the information that I'm not so sure about
That’s what this channel is for
ive only been playing dnd for a week and now ive dmmed 3 times
im severely addicted
If you want to discuss DM things we have #dm-discussion
It is - this channel is specifically to help new to D&D folks get started on that fun!
i play using dndbeyond and avrae
i mostly play homebrew bc i like everything broken
Again, this channel is for helping answer questions newcomers to D&D have when it comes to getting started in the hobby
ok i have a question btw
If you want to discuss your enjoyment of the game, another channel would be better
That's D&D rules
Because those are the rules of the game
one more
More specifically, the progression of each class is not formulaic; it can't just go on forever
So the designers have to choose somewhere for it to stop, and they picked 20
This decision would be based on various factors
how do i use the rod with 6 buttons
i havent been able to use it bc im confused on how it works
The items description will tell you how it works
If you don't understand how any part of that description, we have #dnd-rules
If you want to figure out how best for your character to make use of it, there's #character-discussion
Hi folks what is a Strength Acrobatics check - i think this is when i use the STR modifier instead of the usua DEX modifier is that correct?
Hey, just joined the server and I have never played DnD but always wanted to. No idea where how why or when tbh. The world seems very vast
If you see a call for Strength (Acrobatics) that means "roll a d20, add your strength modifier, and if you are proficient in acrobatics, add your proficiency bonus"
It's an optional rule and is a little beyond the scope of this channel
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.

This guide doesn't substitute for the rules in the Basic Rules/Player's Handbook, but it's a pretty down-to-earth approach for being the DM: https://howtogm.guide/
Hi. Is this server generally for online DnD campaigns?
no dnd is played in the server itself but theres facilities to find campaigns
Hello adventurers! I played 1st edition and a couple of 2nd edition campaigns so I feel like I have got a good grasp of the mechanics. But.. It has been 25+ years since I played now. Those experiences have stuck with me to the point I've actually got dragons tattooed on either side of my head, I've blown fire professionally, I'm called Dragon on the streets IRL and my house is a dragon collectibles heaven lol. After playing Baulders Gate 3 and reading through the 5e players handbook.. I'm really itching to start playing again! I'm newbie old school lol - I like to voice my characters in game play and occasionally even dress the part. I've built out my dragonbon Ranger/Drakewarden character sheet on DNDBeyond (digital character sheets are amazing btw) - now all I need is a good DM and some fun folks to play with. Who's with me?! 😄
I'm down, i have 0 experience with actual dnd but im lifing BG3 rn and Kinda understanding the tabletop through bg
Can i find DnD adventures here?
Welcome back to the hobby. You’ll find that a LOT has changed since 1st and 2nd edition, but if you’ve played BG3 and read the basic rules, you’re probably familiar with most of those changes by now. If you have any questions though, we’re more than happy to help!
If you are ready to start playing, go to #find-a-game and scroll to the top of that channel. There are instructions there for how to post and look for games with other server members
You can try to find games to play at #find-a-game
Yea but how do i do thatV
Did you read the info in #find-a-game ??

Is 1d8+3 or 1d6+4 damage better? I could do that math but I'm sick and don't want to try even though it's easy lol
Yes but didn't really understand
Go to #looking-for-players look through the ads and respond in the thread under the ones that interest you
If you want to make your own ad type. ‘/looking-for’ and you should see some options appear click the looking for dm one and hit enter and then use the bot to fill out your ad
The average of a dice is basically the max 1/2 +0.5. So d8 = 4.5, d6 = 3.5
d8+3= 7.5 on average, 4 min, 11 max.
d6+4= 7.5 on average, 5 min, 10 max.
But the 8 will be more swingy, the 6 more reliable.
From a purely mathematical standpoint:
- 1d6+4 deals between 5-10 damage
- 1d8+3 deals between 4-11 damage
Neither one is objectively better, and each has their own situations in which they can shine. Ultimately, it's just a 1 damage difference in the end!
For wxample rn @ .itsmeh is hosting andi can ask him to join
If they have an ad in #looking-for-players just respond in the attached thread under the ad
FYI dnd is not like a MMO you don’t just drop into a game straight away it may take a while to find a game, and even then there is some setup required to get started
cool thanks
also cool, thanks
Posted - thanks for guiding me in the right direction.
Just got stood up by a group that I was supposed to DM (first time) for. Really bummed out, and feeling like the work I put in wasn't worth it
ouch 😦 That is unfortunate. Don't give up though - the world needs more DMs!
sorry bout that, i'm a bit of a new player but i wish you luck!
I'll probably try to find another group, but man does it sting when you've been preparing something for a while and it doesnt work out
Players are easier to find/replace than DMs. Just think of it as you dodging a bullet with those players.
Again, finding a good table/players/DM is like dating — there's going to be rejections, ghosting, and drama until you find the "right one."
Not sure if I'm gonna be able to find another table. Not a lot of people interested in DnD in the middle-of-nowhere town that I live in ahahah
But I'll try 🥲
i wish you luck!
Second that!
I only found online/unspecified groups.

I heard that the core rules of the official player book are free(like class, races, backgrounds etc) is this true?
You will DM? I'm interested
@elder sinew have you heard of the high elves?
like the race?
Like skyrim
Ive heard of high elves
Basic Rules are free, yes!
There are options in the Player's Handbook (and other books) that are not free.
You can grab the Basic Rules here: https://dnd.wizards.com/what-is-dnd/basic-rules
Isn't it oblivion?
Is your campaign beginner friendly? I'm new to dnd and want to play. I just made my character yesterday via dnd beyond haha
hi sorry to interrupt. i’m new here and me and my friend are looking to join a one shot to get more experience playing, what channel can i search for games in??
Please read #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels
Posting/soliciting games outside of those channels is off-topic and will be moderated.
What does “paid game” mean?
It means the DM/table requires payment to cover costs/time to prepare and run the game.
Neat
Some folks actually make a living DM'ing.
That’s pretty cool
Honestly I find it akin to a mix of acting, improv, and sometimes writing. So pay is well deserved!
Oh uh, I'm afraid I only DM irl for now, at least until I get some experience. Will make sure to let you know once that changes though!
I hope you find some more reliable nerds!
I feel so new and dumb I don’t even know how to phrase the questions I have.. All I gotta say is dnd is interesting but man there’s a lot
umm hiii. i'm new to dnd does anyone have any recommedations for a class that i can try and wrap my simple mind around? sorry if this is the wrong text channel for this question.
You can always build experience! It may seem intimidating at first, but a lot of it is intuitive as you learn. Just a silly little game. Whatever makes the most sense for you
Be who you wanna be, Barbie girl
Magic is typically more complicated, in my opinion. Any melee class is typically much more simple
I’m trying my best 😅
Many folks find Fighters, Barbarians, and Rogues easier to handle than more magic casting classes
That said just pick something that sounds interesting and try and learn it - passion for something can help you learn it better.
thank you very much ill have a read though of those classes.
As for learning D&D, I’d recommend skimming the free basic rules, particularly the sections on how to create a character and the section on combat/skill checks.
Then maybe watch some D&D liveplay streams on YouTube or Twitch to see how the game mechanics play out (remember though that these are entertainment first)
Then try your hand at creating a character or two to see how to do that.
Then find a group and start playing!
You don’t have to know or memorize all the rules- just be familiar enough to know where to go look up a rule and know enough about how to play your character/class
oh ok thank you again for all of this help!!!
Are character backgrounds made at the table? Otherwise do most people go about making just like a generalized backstory then adapting it to the current game they’re playing?
Hello all me and my girlfriend are in a long distance relationship and we would like to play D&D together. She has played once and I have never. I wouldn’t and don’t know where to start. We have tried several times to research and find ways to play together online and trying to find a group or even where to start has always been overwhelming. I’ve noticed a lot of talk about D&D and would love to be at least pointed in the right direction. Especially in finding a group to play with online. Thanks in advance.
I think you found the place u we’re looking for bubba. For pretty much all of that looks like they have links

Backgrounds can be made beforehand or at the table, but remember to keep in mind that if you make it beforehand, it might not fit your DM's world! Sometimes it's better to have a general idea of a character before finding a game than a super specific, concrete backstory.
Hi, i have a question. Probably a dumb one. Im totally new to d&d, i learned about it thanks to baldurs gate. I watched videos about d&d and would love to try,but.. is it possible to find a group that not only accept Total newbie but also uses chat(no vc)? I know thats natural to use VC thats why I feel like its dumb question to ask
Yep, that’s called play-by-post or text games.
Gotcha Ty, I figured it was inevitably up to the dm but wanted to make sure 👍
There are a few play by post games, sure! They might be a little harder to find, but keep looking and you'll find one eventually
Thats good to know, thanks!
Some of the D&D servers advertised in #looking-for-community may have specific play by post games
Take a look at the Dyno post a few messages up! It details how to find a game on this server. Or check out the article below for some more help!

Hi Dudes, only ever played PC games like Baldurs Gate but would love to get into tabletop
In most RPGs I like the sneaky stabby stealthy types, if I'm get into pen and paper for the first time, is like a wood elf assassin gonna be a hard place to start?
sup im new and I wanna join a campain to learn anyone hosting rn?
Hello. I am completely new to dnd and my two sisters and I want to start in this world I’ve been doing some research and I know the basics of character creation and that’s it I don’t know how to make and manage campaigns or how combat or exploration work I don’t know how the dice roll mechanics work either. I want to be dungeon masters and make a campaign for them to play. Any guides on how to be a dungeon master and are there any premade campaigns that can ease me into being dm. I don’t really have any money to buy any books or kits and I’m doing it all online trough roll 20. I’d also appreciate a good roll 20 guide
Rogues are quite easy to play, that would be a good place to start
rogues, fighters, monks, paladins
@wooden folio hey I'll message
Have you read through the basic rules?
I mean it is a very long book
So not really, I have the basic version downloaded
You should at least read the chapters on Character Creation and Combat
the whole book is required reading for D&D, but those are the most important parts
Ok if ur rolling for slight of hand… Dex..no modifiers… against another character in group…
How do we know if he’s successful ? Would it be over 15 he steals it or …. 😅😅😅

here’s also some basic info u will prolly need to know
do i have to know every rule?
I’d focus instead on learning what rules are where, to start.
Then you can simply look them up as needed.
Question about psychic blade for the soul knife rogue spec, it specifies it uses 1d6 + whatever ability modifier you use.
It sounds very strong early, but weak pretty fast.. does the d6 on it become a d8/10/12 as the psionic dice grow?
i focused on how combat and exploring works when i was new
Dm sets the DC
well from what i understand it seems mostly up to the 20 dice
Nope
yeah thats most of the game, but combat has some stuff you gotta know to make it run smoother
well that'll be if i can find anyone to play with or figure out how to play online
Damn , so it just kinda sucks ? Telepathy sounds so strong tho.
Well the description says I can talk to them and they can talk to me.
Also states we don't even have to speak a common language and we still perfectly understand each other's. Basically makes you know every language
interesting
nah u can just talk to people telepathically, pretty good for being sneaky or needing to convey info to party members around ppl u like dont trust or something
or just yeet them on a wall make them pass out
but I'm more curious about the psychic blades, they do 1d6 plus ability modifier, it doesn't seem very strong at midpoint. Not sure it's a strong spec anymore
i am slightly more brutal xd
Oh so it does become a d8/d10/d12
No
not the blade
The blade doesn’t scale, but you can do more stuff with it
Think of it as a conduit for your other abilities
great way to put it
so like a power source?
Oh yeah it becomes homing strike / psychic teleportation at 9th level
You're right that it sucks, yes. However, it's not the only ability that the Soulknife subclass gives to you
Until LVL 9, kinda? Or am I not looking correctly ?
Soulknife is an amazing rogue subclass - one cool thing about it is that you can channel your psionic power into boosting skill checks, which is really neat
More like a point everything else comes from
It's probably my favourite rogue subclass for that reason
Truue
or can we customize it as we want
Correct
You need to follow the options set out
options?
It’s explained in the first chapter of the basic rules
You get psionic dice amount to twice you proficiency bonus. They refresh on long rest.
You can also use a bonus action to restore 1 dice per long rest.
The character options, like class, subclass, race, etc
pretty straightforward
there are 3 types of rolls you make
and the rules, while long, are simple
and you don't need to know all of them
so it seems complicated but its not then
yeah
well hopefully not cause yeahhh xd
is there a campaign based in the astral plane?
Spelljammer iirc
iirc? what does that mean?
If I remember correctly
oh ok thank you.
is it sci-fi based or fantasy based? i'm looking for kind of like a regular fantasy vibe but in the astral plane
It’s like fantasy spaceships
Spelljammer is D&D ships in space. Think Treasure Planet.
how and where do i find players to play test stuff
If you go to #find-a-game and scroll to the top of that channel, there is instructions posted there for how to use the bot to make posts in our “looking for games” channels. If you plan on running a game to test your homebrew or anything like that, you’ll want to use that bot to post in #looking-for-players
Does magic run on a cast-time or are they unleashed instantly?
All spells include a casting time in their spell description. Most spells in the game have a casting time of 1 action, which means they are cast as part of the same action you use to start the casting process, so basically instantly. Some spells do have a longer (or shorter) casting time though.
Seems fair
Hey everyone I poster looking for a dm in the find a game party and i didn’t see it post on to the channel? Do you not see@your own add xx
What would you like to do?
I would like to enter any campaign.
I would also like to learn more and experience DnD.
Have you read through the Basic Rules, and thought about making a character?
I am currently reading the basic rules and I am making a Human Bard Character.
Hi everyone i wanna learn how to play from scratch is anyone willing to teach and even play with me
Im new and really interesting in learning
Yeah i bought the essentials kit and i wanna learn but im not sure where to start
Yo
Crack open the book and take a look. Or there's a demo to get you going, let me see if I remember how to summon it...

Oh thank you ill definitely look into it
I played the demo i enjoyed playing as a rogue was interesting especially being a lightfoot halfling makes thr world so fun
Hey, Im a beginner DM (and D&D player) and I have a question:
- What classes/subclasses and races should I allow my players to use?
- Do we need to have the respective guide book to use some races and classes?
Either physical copies or digital, you can buy individual items on DnDbeyond so you don’t have to buy the whole book. If it’s a bunch of new people you should be fine with the free basic rules
It's more about what you don't allow, and for what reasons - such as a campaign about a holy order versus a cult, being mostly paladin and cleric
#dnd-newcomers I'm new to all this please go easy on me
"Granted then in still ine building my first character stage, but pretty much know in aiming for an assassin or Kensai monk. Just to double check my research, it seems like the wood elves are a good candidate for either role."
If you are a level 1 fighter using a 1 handed axe with 16 STR (+3), Dueling (+2) and profiency with axes (+2), do you add +5 to hit (as dueling dosent count there) and +7 (adding all values) to damage?
you add STR to attack and damage, so +3, as well as prof, +2, so +5 to hit.
You add STR to damage, so +3, as well as dueling 2, so +2, so +5 to damage.
so the proficency bonus with axes is only for hit and not for damage?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#ModifierstotheRoll
"You add your proficiency bonus to your attack roll when you attack using a weapon with which you have proficiency, as well as when you attack with a spell."
Thank you! New DM here, and thought the fighter seemed to damage a little too much last session. Found out why now.
as long as they're holding one weapon in one hand (they can have a shield) it's in line for damage
they have +5 to hit (3 str, 2 prof)
and +5 to damage (3 str, 2 from Dueling style)
cheat sheet. Nice little handout for players to simplify things
is there anyone doing like a starter campaign for newcomers just to get used to the hang of things
You can use the instructions in #find-a-game to find those games!
