You don't play D&D Beyond, you play D&D
D&D Beyond is a toolset to help with playing D&D

Hey Iv never played dnd or even seen a game ever until i saw somone on yt play 4 the 1st time ever and i might wanna try. PS i dont know any rules or anything about the game just a heads up.
Is there someone out there who can walk me through creating a dnd character from scratch? I know the rule book n everything is on the internet but I just don't know what do with so much information, plus idk what's relevant and what's allowed
Same
rockstar and joey
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
wanna be a group with us 3 being player?
Oh ok
u wanna group up?
Mmmm I don't see why not lol
Ok
alr dm me u 2 and add me ill make a group chat
Info on encounter building is in the Dungeon Master's Guide. There are also encounter calculator websites like Kobold+ Fight Club (among others) to help.
warch "a crap guide to DnD" which is ironically a pretty good guide tnDnD
Ooo alr thx
I watched a crap guide to dnd when I was very new
To know how to fill a character sheet and I didn't understand anything the video is too fast bc its like a joke video
damn really? that stuff is exactly what I liked about the video
like it's fast and funny while still telling you the stuff ya need to know, I guess people just learn in different ways lol
and I hate slow, yeah looks like we just learn differently, pretty cool
yeah well everyone can learn the way they are best at
yeah, lets just wait and see which Bonett prefers

Where should I start I don't know how to play DND and I don't have any friends
Start with the links right above!
But if you've got any specific questions, ask away.
I really want to find a group to play with I have seen a few videos about DND but other than the staff like what classes There are in DND I have no clue what to do
The links above should help. This how-to-play article (https://www.ign.com/articles/how-to-play-dungeons-and-dragons) breaks it down nicely:
- You need people.
- You need the rules (linked above).
- You need dice (these can be digital or physical).
- You need character sheets (available at https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets or via D&D Beyond).
- If you're playing online, you need a means of communication (Discord, Skype, etc.).
The player create characters (see the rules). The Dungeon Master (the narrator/referee) runs the adventure, controlling the world and non-player characters. Players describe what they want their characters to do. Dice are rolled to determine success/failure. The DM narrates the results. Together, you all create a story.
That's the gist of it.
We recommend recruiting using the #find-a-game channels provided in the server
You can Google search dnd or game store. Sometimes they host dnd or know of groups. I play at one at a local college. I found some friends.
from what i hear, sometimes the 'making friends' part comes with the territory of playing the game
everyone starts somewhere, after all. you don't need a whole network to play the funny dice game
Hi hi. I'm new to the dnd community, Im still learning the basics but I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice? I'll be mostly playing online so advice would really be useful.
Are you a player or a DM?
Player
My list of general player tips: #dnd-newcomers message
To those I'd add, "Don't make your fun interfere with anyone else’s.”
Alrighty.

Is owlbear radio free if the DM has already set up the board?
Owlbear Rodeo is free in general. (I'm unsure if there's an upgraded version with an associated cost.)
It’s free regardless.
And yeah, there is a paid subscription with additional features.
More rooms, more storage space, etc.
With the roll 20 is it not possible to create a character sheet alone or is that part imported in with the game/by the dm?
That one I don’t know. I much prefer Owlbear. 😅
I think the DM has to import a character with Roll20. That sort of thing is less newcomer and more #third-party-tools-archive, FYI.
roll20 is character sheet set by campaign.
in the campaign options, before you launch the actual game, you can set the charsheet you want to use for that game, and there's quite a large library of styles to choose from, even just within DND. Pretty sure you can upload one too.
then the GM has to create a sheet, then give the player permission to edit it, and ownership of it.
im super new to d&d but i think id really like it, where do i start, should i make a character first or find a group
My suggestion is go through the character-creation process for practice and to create some loose character concepts that you're okay with tweaking to fit a game. You can do that while looking for a group/game, and that takes time, so no sense sitting on your hands.
It's created as part of a game. You can set up an "empty" game if you like. But you can also import from DnD beyond, and the same (free) content is available on both, so you are better off making it in DnD Beyond - it's also a better user experience.
I will point out, though, that there is no official integration between D&D Beyond and Roll 20. There are third-party tools that provide it, but they’re not officially supported by either site, so they may cause unexpected behavior.
@void saddle it's cool, it's just one of those servers where everything is kept in a very specific box. The #dnd-rules channel is the box for "what happens if I multiclass this while casting this spell on this creature and holding this item". This channel is more for "how does grappling work?".
Even if you have played D&D for 40 years there is no shame in being new to 5E. I only started playing 5E back in 2019 but have played D&D since the early 1980s (I get the occasional edition rules confusion).
hey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone is more than happy to help you and answer your questions, but we just wanted to make sure its done in the right place. This is technically the proper channel for the discussions we were having there
Yeah and this is still a very active channel.
so, feel free to keep the questions coming if you have any. Just post them here
The tone here is much more conversational.
You'll get used to hearing "the proper channel for that is..." On this server. It's both a community thing and a moderator thing. It's never meant as criticism.
The rules channel is for rules lawyer and not really for helping players new to 5E.
yeah so we can really ask about questions here? I wont be blocked or put in time out?
For sure. Much less specifically restrictive.
Ok so someone explain to me the advanages of being a barbarian.
Low AC, rage just gives them damage bonus
It gives them damage resistance too
Low AC, but damage resistance and usually very high HP because of the D12 hit die
They have the biggest hit die, their rage reduces damage, and they get advantage on certain checks/attacks.
They also hit hard, as you point out.
Barbarians are also the simplest class. Usually your combat options will rarely get more complex than picking who to hit. It makes it great if you are trying to tempt someone into playing who is put off by complex spells. It can also be a little boring as a result.
is there a good template i can use for a character sheet?

thankk uuuu!
Is there somewhere a small book / pdf that is used as a reminder about how to create a 5e character sheet + leveling
There are a couple of Reddit threads if you Google Images search dnd character creation cheat sheet.
Ty guys 🙂
yup 🙂
Good day.
Hello!
When I look up how to get into DND I see a lot of people talking about physical guides like the Player's Handbook
But I plan to play online and it's hard for me to get my hands on these sort of stuff where I live
What are some good online resources to help me get started?
@waxen timber can i dm you?
D&D Beyond is going to be one of the best options for the resources online. They sell digital copies of the rules, as well as integrate it in to a digital character creator.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

This has all the information you need to play DnD for free! Give it a look!
Are you using xp or milestone advancement type for characters? Using the site you are given the option, chat leads me to believe xp, default is milestone.
You'll have to ask your DM! It's different between individual games
Thanks! I will once I have one, first time player.
Anyone know any good small businesses? tryna buy some dice
if you want to support a small business, its probably best to buy local
If you’re looking for something in the server there’s #dnd-advertisements
Hello, looking to learn how to play DnD and was hoping someone has some tips. I think I understand the basics, but don't really know where to find a group to join and was told that was the best way to learn.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

As the bot post says above, you can go to our #find-a-game channel for instructions. There, you can use the bot commands to fill out a form, which will automatically generate a post in our "looking for games" channels. Or you can go to #looking-for-players to browse posts made by DMs, if you want to try to find a group that way
Pretty rough trying to find a new game as someone who's never had the chance to leave the starter town.
Some people are newbie friendly but not many, and most still want you to have had more experience than... like 2 fights.
I feel that. Hope she recovers well, but thats rough on all ends
a feat called "better lucky than good" says the prerequisite is 2 luck feats. what are luck feats?
No idea what feat you're talking about and feats are a bit above newcomer kind of questions
Just did a lookup of feats and that isn't an official feat.
oh mb i think its 3.5e and not 5e
Okay... than #dnd-elder-editions folks might know what you're asking about.
yeah mb i didnt know it was 3.5e at first
what dose PHB mean? me and a friend (he knows more about D&D then me) cant find out what PHB means.
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is an official sourcebook containing the full core rules of the game. The book is everything a player needs to create heroic characters for Dungeons & Dragons the world’s greatest roleplaying game. Some of this content is available for free as a part of the Basic Rules. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordPHB
Hello I'm new to the whole dnd and is interested in trying it
Hey me too
#find-a-game has the information you'll need
What background is a background that goes with researching death?
Sage, maybe
ok thanks
City watch, potentially.
making a bloodhunter character that is a researcher of death
CSI: Waterdeep
Bear in mind, while it may look more official than most, Bloodhunter remains Homebrew, and won't be accepted at all tables. They are also not as well balanced as other classes (in my opinion).
yeah i know
hello!
Hello
hi i'm newish to DND :)
I have played a few games
Like 5
One being a one shot the other 3 are not done yet
i've started a campaign with friends but we never finished and some rules weren't included but i get the basics i think
yea!
hello
Hi
Hi
I am not currently looking for a game but I hope you find a good one
It complicated to explain it in messages
The game is easier to learn if you find a dm that can help teach you

ty so much for the suggestion!
trying to find a game but idk really where to start

oh yea i looked through there! i just dont know where to start lol
i'm nervous
Check out #looking-for-players
If you’ve read the basic rules and made a practice character you’re ready to find a game I think
i know a bit about the rules and i made a character before but that was with a friends help and they did most of it
how do i make a practice character?
Make a character on your own just to practice
oh ok is there a place i can go to? like to do that
It can come across as daunting but it's not as titanic an undertaking as it may seem.
D&D Beyond is a great website for making characters online
i think i tried it before but got really confused
i just kinda stuck with using my note pad in my computer and looking up dice roles lol but i'll give dnd byond a look!
about what?
idk really anymore it was a while ago i just know i got confused on something with it and gave up
i'm making a character with it now
If you want to practice fighting with a character once you make one, I would start with one goblin, at the opposite end of a 300 foot by 150 ft arena of 5 ft squares, and one piece of cover near the goblin.
If you look up the dnd 5e quick reference sheet, it will give you a visual shortcut list of what actions you have available to you in a given turn.
If you want to make the practice match harder, add one goblin and or one piece of cover at a time.
I put a link to the quick reference sheet in the #third-party-tools-archive channel for you
Dnd beyond is generally the easiest option
How many cantrips can a high elf sorcerer have?
Depends on the level.
Level 1
One for being a high elf, and another four for being a sorcerer.
If you look at the sorcerer class table it shows the number of cantrips sorcerers get at each level
It’s 4 at level one
Then you get an extra cantrip, from the wizard spell list, for being a high elf
Ok thanks
yea i'm making one rn :) i'm makin a ranger tiefling
again i've played a altered version of dnd a bit before and also a bit of baldurs gate 3 but idk how much that counts for
Generally baldurs gate 3 can help to get a rough idea, but don’t assume any rules based on it, as it had a lot of changes
Yo can anyone play like rn online
how do that
like find a website that lets you and get in a vc
Please use the LFG channels to find a group/game. See #find-a-game
ok
What undyingnoob said, also it’s not really a game you can just jump into instantly. It’s more built for finding one group and playing with them at prescheduled times
there ARE some servers out there that do PVP stuff
that's more of a pick up and compete event, but that's a less common arrangement.
D&D is still generally not a drop in at a moments notice game
There's also adventure league, where people race through modules (packaged and sold adventures)
where you can show up day of an event and sometimes get a slot if there's an open slot at a table, or if you learn enough to run a game, volunteer GMs are often welcome
and some westmarch servers have some honestly novel and unique ways of playing
a westmarch game is one shared setting, run by multiple Game masters/DungeonMasters/Storytellers
Westmarches still generally aren’t instant, you apply to a session a few hours ahead
yeah but he could jump in and start the application right now
just trying to help
I usually find westmarches weird and cliquey though, so be advised.
(the people playing longest have a substantial lore lead on anyone attempting to join, and trying to catch up leads to a rushed character arc. not that you have to try to catch up.)
When people join a new VTT group is it usually expected to have a character already set up on something like DnD Beyond before joining?
Not necessarily. It's often a good idea to have the character fit the game, both lore-wise and in terms of party composition (if that's how folks play), so pre-building can clash with that. But you can always ask whoever you're in contact with from the group.
That makes sense, thanks.
Our DM for one offs. Who ever is coming make a level x character with x magic item and see you there. That being said I need to make a bard
How do you post on looking for players or looking for dms
Read carefully through #find-a-game.
is anyone down to start a new campain
Please use the appropriate channels for making a group, I.e the #find-a-game channels
i am im new to dnd
Yep - posting that you're looking for a game/organizing a game anywhere else is off-topic and means more work for us mods 😉
Read #find-a-game and use the right channels.
but also guys go to the other channel
guys accept my freind request maybe we can talk privately

Hello! I'm new to d&d and I was wondering if I need to have a character set up before joining a party? I only know a very small amount from watching videos of people play it
There'll be a lot missing from BG3 - lots of creative liberties to make a videogame out of it
Not necessarily. Your DM could have restrictions on what they allow for characters in their campaign. If you would like to better understand the general basics of the game, take a look at the Dyno message right before yours that has a breakdown of information pertaining to the game.
You can certainly create a character to have and offer for the game, but it might be easier to join the group before creating the character.
ok i was just asking just in case
Definitely, seems reasonable. Good luck finding a group!
I know that there is a race that has the feature to insult in combat, anyone know what that race is?
That rings a bell, but I’m not sure what race it is
Kender?
Kender Taunt
Kenders can impose disadvantage on attack rolls not made to them
which is a pretty tank move
Hey I'm completely new to dnd so new I don't know really anything about and ie never played it I just heard more about it recently and got interested so if anybody would be willing to give me a hand and help me out much would be appreciated

Is there any online ways to play? like games or smtn cuz I never played before
Theres plenty of ways, it just depends on what you would want specifically
But the more popular options are through discord, Roll20, I've used Foundry a few times. But there are lots of options and ways to play online with folk.
Okay thanks. I know one of my friends plays but he recently went to college before we tried playing haha
?tag new online
Well there ya go lol
Thank you lol
I've been watching dnd related things for a while and am wanting to learn more about it, would I go the #character-discussion to ask about like spells and abilities and such?
Have you read the basic rules? Thats a better place to start, they are pinned in this channel

Ah OK thank you
hi i wanted to know how i should go about dming my first session i wanted to do a one shot but i want to get my friends into it so a homebrew campaign better fitted for them so itll be more fun..... any thoughts?
A one-shot is better to test the waters. You can always do a campaign afterwards.
Can someone explain me how the cantrip chill touch works
Ive read it but I didn’t understand
They can just do 1d8 damage without rolling anything
No they have to hit first
Make a ranged spell attack against the creature to assail it with the chill of the grave.
What does making a ranged spell attack mean
Like with a weapon?
So you can’t use this spell if the target is 5ft away
You could
Oh
You'd just have disadvantage
d20 + Spell ability score + Proficiency bonus
its a ranged spell
Does it say it in the spell?
no. just ranged rules
Yes since it is ranged
Sure I guess
yes, but if you shoot at someon within 5ft, it has disadvantage
it can be up to that range
Oh ok
Im writing it to my sorcerer player that doesnt know how to use spells
I mean she read them but shes very new
ah, ic
Tomorrow I am doing session 0 with them
it should be in the spellcasting section of her class
hey so generally how does like buying stuff work when you're starting as a fresh character?
cause like, for hexblade it kind of seems like im getting a lot of proficiencies and main class benefits that with starter warlock gear i wouldn't really be able to make use of, like medium armor/martial weapon/shield
That depends on your dm and your world
alright
But you're usually able to go to a shop sometime or maybe find some loot early on
is there a starting gold in raw or is it just what's on your sheet
Yeah there's some gold from your background
background! okay
i will look at those thank you
is there a good like wiki for dnd stuff cause beyond seems gated behind like, money
and ive found a comprehensive one but the ui is kind of bad
This is the official dnd beyond discord, asking for pirated versions of copyrighted materials is not allowed
Have you suggested that your players join this server so they can ask questions on things they don’t understand
Ill try to suggest them
alright i guess that's fair, i will probably go elsewhere. i figured maybe since this stuff is just readily available elsewhere it was just a sort of crappy thing about the beyond site
no worries
if it is readily available it is not a legal source
and it also will not be accessible if you want to use the dnd beyond character builder
In order to use the content on Dnd Beyond it must be purchased
Why is it crappy for a company to sell their product? They give you the basic rules for free and you can buy individual races and classes options for 1.99 so you don’t have to buy the whole book
i didnt get the like 123movies kind of vibe from the other wiki i found so i thought it was more of a "pay beyond for our dnd resource" and not "this is the one dnd resource"
my friends said yes yall im so excited to introduce them to this because truly this game has to be the most fun ive ever had i hope they feel the same as i do
ignorance on my behalf, it's alright
Roll20 and FantasyGrounds also have the license to sell 5e digital content, but anything else sharing content beyond the Basic Rules is fundamentally breaking the copyright
oh okay, i felt like i was trying to read basic rules and i couldn't get to it on beyond before
but maybe it was something more specific i was looking at
Those links directy send you to the basic rules on dndbeyond

what on roll 20 costs money? i havent played a campaign in years and that campaign was my first ever online campaign so i dont really remember what we did there
i just know i didnt pay for anything and we were using roll20 for something regarding that campaign
You get access to a lot more storage space and can fool around with dynamic lighting.
Is your DM is managing the campaign through dndbeyond they can share content with you
okay, he probably had roll 20 proper then
The highest tier gets you access to api scripts and even more storage space.
idk what my dm is using for our upcoming campaign yet i was just trying to figure out what raw offers my level 1 character in terms of resources to potentially pay for the stuff i need
i know you can sell your starter gear at half price and that yeah, dm discretion i might just get some things to help me be more realized
You need to ask what your DM also allows at the table
yeah i know i was just sort of figuring out worst case what i might be able to scrounge together with the bare rules
i like drawing rp characters on other games and such so im trying to figure things out before session 0
RAW, your gold is from your background and a class, which provides the option for gold or starting equipment. You can sell stuff for half cost.
Your DM has discretion to modify as they see fit
yeah. there's definitely some backgrounds that could help me pay for some stuff but im thinking my character was kind of a loser before his patron arrived (and my patron is charon) so fisher might be the best
and again i know, dm discretion stuff, just sorta trying to piece things together without the immediate help of my dm who isnt available to talk to about this stuff yet. just super excited
As a new character you really dont need to focus on having the absolute best items
The starting equipment is fine to begin
i'd just really like a longsword and maybe a shield, my character is a hexblade that thinks he's a paladin
let me see how much a shield costs
Being prepared by understanding the rules and knowing your class features and having an idea of your characters personality is really where your time is best spent
Shields cost 10 gp
yeah, so 25 is how much i need to hit if i want both of those. yeah im not a complete beginner, i dont have the most like hands on experience, i played i think maybe 3.5 back in highschool and then i played a handful of sessions of 5e sometime after highschool and ive watched a lot of dnd content and have played a lot of bg3
but yes the class features i will try to get a good handle on
Just keep in mind you'd only be able to cast verbal spells if you do this which can be limiting. Unless your dm is lenient about spell foci and what not
ooh yeah i didnt know that. i dont think bg3 uses foci
thank you for that, could be good to just do the sword then
is eldritch blast verbal?
That’s not accurate
You can cast any spell, however you have to manually supply the material components
Let's compile this all together just to be sure:
- It's a Ranged Spell Attack. It's an Attack just like any other, meaning you make an attack roll, see if you hit the target's AC, dealing damage (and Chill Touch's special effect) on a hit.
- It has a range of 120 feet. You can attack anything up to 120 feet away.
- All Ranged attacks have this rule: "When you make a ranged attack ... you have disadvantage on the attack roll if you are within 5 feet of a hostile creature who can see you and who isn’t incapacitated."
So, 1: If there is an enemy within 5 feet of you, and 2: that enemy can see you, and 3: that enemy is not incapacitated, then you have disadvantage. If they're blinded, if they're incapacitated (including by the Stunned, Paralyzed, and Unconscious conditions), or if they are not within 5 feet, the disadvantage does not apply.
If he doesn't have a hand free he's not going to be able to cast anything but verbal though
The spell description will have some combination of V, S, M to indicate whether it has verbal, somatic or material components
Eldritch Blast is V and S
The war caster feat lets you perform S with the same hand as a shield or weapon
And V takes no hands
So with war caster you could eblast with a shield and sword
i think hexblade has a pact boon for that so might not want to use a feat on that
but at level 1 yeah ill have to consider the spell focus stuff
Not exactly
There’s a eldritch invocation, locked behind the pact of the blade, that lets you use your pact weapon as a spellcasting focus
You can perform somatic components with the same hand that holds your spellcasting focus, but only if that spell also has material components
So war caster would still be worth it for concentration protection, and the ability to cast spells with S and not M with both hands full
Component rules are weird
V = no hand needed
I'd just allow you to do it as a dm because the idea is cool enough but i know most dms are sticklers for it
S = free hand needed, or can use focus hand if spell also has M
M = focus needed, or free hand needed to access component pouch
war caster lets you use a shield or weapon hand for S
so assuming my character started as a lowly sailor/fisherman before he made his pact, it could work sort of flavor wise that the war caster aspect was part of the boon granted to him by his patron, even if im getting it from variant human?
Sure
hexblade already kind of gives this idea of turning a guy into a proficient warrior via magic, so he could've been granted those necessary skills as part of the pact
alright cool
my character has 6 int and believes charon lord of the styx to be a "boat god"
lol
the pact involves bringing charon evil souls to help balance out a low period they're experiencing in the styx due to magical influence (revivals, immortality, etc.) charon is not intending to mislead him at all but due to his sheer ignorance he believes he's been chosen to become a paladin and that his oath involves "slaying evil doers"
charon is just like "alright well he seems happy i guess, whatever"
Lol I like that
we're rolling for stats later on but because my backstory requires my character to be significantly clueless i requested my int be set to 6
there's just kind of a bloodthirsty nature that charon sensed within my pc that he believed could be useful. he really wants to be a brave and inspiring hero but like a lot of men his fantasies are a bit gruesome
Hello
Is it possible for a sorcerer to have a flintlock pistol?
If your dm allows firearms, then yes
Keep in mind that by default they won’t be proficient in it tho
So could my character become proficient in it or would this just be a bad idea in general
Having a gun sounds cool but I don't want to make my character weak in order to become a jack of all trades
Sorcerer already gets light crossbow but would that or a flint lock be better than firebolt?
Fair enough lol
And uh one last thing
Which system for ability scores is usually used?
Ask your DM but point buy or standard array are the ones most would likely use but if you roll a DM would like to see you roll the stats
Thanks 🙏

Can I just make up my height and weight as a human or do I have to roll for it?
You can make them up. Human size is medium, and that's really what matters for the game.
Height and weight matters about as much as hair and eye colour - it will only come up if the DM has concocted a weird scenario where it might matter.
man i always focus on height but weight is actually an interesting point
it could be kind of rad to make a big dude, like strongman real heavy
if i end up in another campaign after this one i should do that, just be a real physical presence. i know stats are really what matter but ya know. the roleplay
You could even use different heights, with different playstyles, like a short but crazy stacked (heavy) character with a high strength, and decent dexterity, that's just like a wrecking ball crashing through fights
Yo do we like actually play dnd on the server?
No we don't play games here on the server - but you can use our LFG channels to find a group/game to join. Read #find-a-game to learn more.
Hello, i'm completly new to dnd and i would like to learn how to play
Have you read the basic rules?
Me to! Been looking into this alot recently after watching a lot of tabletops online and i'm a little hooked now
just have no idea where to start

Oh! I did set up a DND beyond account, been reading through it and trying to work out whats what
thanks
Have a read, any questions and people will jump to answer to the best of their ability
Theres so much to remember - how do you keep track of it all?
I have no clue how to play/do this all i know is that its fun and people think its for nerds
Help lol
The link above is really helpful ⬆️
No one does. You are not expected to remember all of the rules while playing. Looking things up in the book during the session is a totally normal part of the game. The trick isn’t to remember all of the rules, it’s to remember where to find all of the rules
That makes alot of sense. I just pictured myself with a thousand post it notes on my computer screen 🥲
Most of the stuff you need will be on your character sheet
Also true
Once you are underway, you'll get into a groove of what rules you need to remember, and what won't be relevant. For example, grappling rules are quite complicated, but aren't usually going to matter if you are a Wizard.
I'm just having a look at character building now and what goes into it
It ends up being a web of interconnected memorizations, for me.
There's a lot I can just jump to and go "I know that exists, let me source it"
I'm assuming there is a learning curve 🥲
indeed
The character building - is this like a universal building process or are there different ways to do it?
Technically you can do it in any order, only that equipment has to come after class and background
race, class, ability scores, you can work whichever way
I prefer figuring out my scores first to see what I'd like to play with those stats, but others may prefer other things
So I'm using the D&D Beyond one, i'm just curious if they all use the same scope for builds and stats
I guess the first character is more of a learning one or do you all still use your first character?
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPjdPog_vKX1vnjf68Sx2jcq1OtVUSA2i&si=tmIFEDl7ZLhCOAiy playlist on how to make a few character on dndbeyond
Oh, I'm already making one. I was just wondering if everyone uses this or if there are other platforms and if they use the same bases?
There are a few other options for making character but dmdbeyond makes it alot easier, you will tend to make a PC for each campaign you play in, there are games called adventures league where you can play the same PC in different ones
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

So basically I am new and have not played or seen a dnd game? So somebody tell me what to do before finding?joining a game?

In what web or app can I use for a dnd map with tiles and to move the players and draw on the map
If you get what I mean...
That's called a Virtual Tabletop. Popular ones include Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo (both with a free tier) and Foundry (a one-time purchase). D&D Beyond is also in the testing phases of launching their own, which I think they just called "Maps"
Usually a VTT will also incorporate the game system, like do the dice rolls and HP tracking, rather than just being a passive map.
I tried roll20 and I didn't understand how to use ittt
There's a learning curve, that's for sure...but it's the best way to play online.
You might want to try the Roll20 Discord for further tips, if that's the one you have decided to have a crack at. I started on Roll20 before moving to Foundry, which is much better.
Just keep in mind that there is no official Roll20 Discord as far as I'm aware.
You might have an easier time with Owlbear Rodeo.
what to do after creating a character?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Although to be honest, you can try and find a game before creating a character as well, that's often advisable
I tried owlbear rodeo and it's easier
why's that?
There isn't, but there is a helpful subreddit that operates their own discord.
You may fall in love with the idea of your paladin character and then find that the only group you want to join already has a paladin, warrior, and barbarian, but really wants a rogue.
Another way to address that problem is to make a handful of different characters.
Your character might not fit many DMs game-worlds, so you're limiting yourself
so after learning the basics just join a game?
Yep, that's the point; get into a game!
Yeah, I just wanted them to have full disclosure that it was the Subreddit one before thinking that it was run by the official source.
And agreed, it could feel disheartening or disappointing to create a character that you love, only for your DM to tell you that they aren't allowing the race or subclass you chose.
Hi guys, never played d&d before but really wanna start anyone have some advice?
As a middleground, it may help to come up with a few loose ideas for characters. Then when you find a DM, you can work together to pick the best fit for that campaign and add any finishing details.
so how to join a game if you are a newbie?

Hi guys, i am new in d&d and thought that i should get some advice before starting, since i actually never played it before
Are you looking for advice on how the rules and the game works, or advice on how to join and what to do while playing?

For future reference, if you want to share stories from your games, #tales-from-the-table is the proper channel to do so.
This channel is generally speaking meant to be a question-answer format, so that newcomers can learn more about the game. Its much more flexible than #dnd-rules, but should still mostly be kept to that. You can share you session stories in the other channel.
How to join and what to do while playing? I am a newbie and have never played a game.
To join a game, you really just need to get a number of people together who all agree to play, and find a time that fits all of your schedules to do it. Any "looking for game" forums or websites, like the ones in this server or that you might find on reddit or facebook or whatever, are really just a way for people to talk to each other so you can find others who might want to play with you. In this server, we have #find-a-game with instructions on how to go about doing this.
Do u have timezones?
in #750812887697588356 and #looking-for-players the posts there should list the person's timezone, usually
If you're looking for basic terminology, you might want to check out the basic rules first.

Saving Throws
A saving throw--also called a save--represents an attempt to resist a spell, a trap, a poison, a disease, or a similar threat. You don’t normally decide to make a saving throw; you are forced to make one because your character or monster is at risk of harm.
To make a saving throw, roll a d20 and add the appropriate ability modifier. For example, you use your Dexterity modifier for a Dexterity saving throw.
A saving throw can be modified by a situational bonus or penalty and can be affected by advantage and disadvantage, as determined by the DM.
Each class gives proficiency in at least two saving throws. The wizard, for example, is proficient in Intelligence saves. As with skill proficiencies, proficiency in a saving throw lets a character add his or her proficiency bonus to saving throws made using a particular ability score. Some monsters have saving throw proficiencies as well.
The Difficulty Class for a saving throw is determined by the effect that causes it. For example, the DC for a saving throw allowed by a spell is determined by the caster’s spellcasting ability and proficiency bonus.
The result of a successful or failed saving throw is also detailed in the effect that allows the save. Usually, a successful save means that a creature suffers no harm, or reduced harm, from an effect.
Thanks for the help
Is it normal to be near death every episode
Depends on the DM, and the difficulty of the adventure, but its not that uncommon. Especially at low levels. Adventuring is much more dangerous the lower your level is
I was literally one roll away from certain unrecoverable death today
Thank god for Inspiration
Is paying for games common? A lot of the the replies to the thread I made are trying to get me to pay to play but that seems silly if its my first one and I'm not sure about groups and campaigns....
i believe they are theminority
It's not uncommon.
haha, I'm just a very skeptical person maybe
That's fair. But DMs sink a lot of resources into this game. It's fun, but wanting a little something back is not an unusual sentiment.
I get that, but your paying for something that you have no idea on the outcome of which just seems a bit odd. If you don't like the DMs style or the group your with it could be tricky. I've got nothing against giving donations through out mind, I can appriciate and time and effort that goes into running them.
Ty so much man this was very helpful
@smoky adder
Not all paid DMs offer this, but you could always express that concern and see if they'll offer any refund/money-back. Most paid DMs, regardless of the money, do actually want you to have fun (and also it's in their best interests due to reviews, word of mouth, etc.).
You could also see if they offer a free "Session Zero". That's typically a time to get together and not exactly play, but figure out what everyone is hoping to get from the game, figure out if there are any themes that should be excluded (e.g. homophobia or sexual assault), and just generally feel out vibes. Hope that helps!
This helps, I just wasn't sure on how it all worked. Free zero sessions sounds like a good idea, like a try before you buy
Yup. But again, just double check. Paid DMs all run their tables differently; but definitely no harm in asking!

How does wild shape work
Have you read the feature and need help explaining it, or do you need help finding it in the rules?
Need help finding
Thanks
If I’m a Bard/Druid when i level up do they both level up or do I have to choose
You choose
when you gain a level, you have to choose which class to take that gained level in
As a note, it's usually recommended for new players to avoid multiclassing. While certainly doable, it can be significantly more complicated than one might expect, and it's also much easier to make a very underwhelming build.
So, i already signed in #find-a-game so now i just have to wait or do i have to do something more?
Wait or look through #looking-for-players and respond to the ads
You'll probably have better luck contacting DMs directly rather than waiting for one to contact you.
@fresh fable I forgot that there was that, i will check out there. Thanks
Are battles supposed to take like an hour or is that just bcuz my party of six is made up of two ppl with no weapons a fighter a rogue and two bards
An hour per combat encounter is pretty average
depends on what youre fighting and how high level you are but yes combats eat up a lot of time
Ok I wasn't sure if it was or if it was because the things we were fighting were just really strong thank you
Level three now fought a mimic and a manticore

Hello all I am looking to become a player of a campaign so I can learn and be a dm for my job where I’m starting a campaign sometime in the future. Is there anything I should learn before joining a campaign?
Brief aside but text is always more accessible than images so please use text predominantly to convey your message.
Basic rules would be a start. Have you played before?
I recommend getting some familiarity with the game rules (check pinned message here for some useful resources).
Then get to know how your character and class function. Don't have to know everything but the more understanding you have the better it will be. And then focus on having fun - and also helping others at your game have fun.
Thank you both!
I’ve played bladurs gate but have been watching content of DND for a while. I have not played an actual campaign before
Well welcome! D&D can be an amazingly fun game!
As a headsup, Baldur's Gate 3, while based on D&D 5th Edition, makes some tweaks to the rules for the sake of an engaging and fun video game.
Tabletop RPG games play differently than video games.
Got it thanks!

ok
I am new to DnD. I am in a group we are starting at level 5 the other two players are playing a druid and a rouge not sure what their specs are. Not sure what I should play. Please help me!
what is the attack role modifier based on and how do you change it?
It's based on the primary attribute that the weapon used, uses. And any proficiency bonus if you are proficient with that weapon.
So a longsword is strength based - so the attack role modifier is your strength modifier plus your proficiency bonus (assuming you are proficient with that weapon)
wait where whould the proficiency bonus be
What class sounds fun and interesting to you? Play that (but make sure it works well for the type of D&D game you're playing).
It's based on the level of the character - check the table for your class to see what the proficiency bonus is for your class level: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes
(but it's not tied to a class - it's based on total character level)
We are playing 5e and I'm not sure. I played a bard during our one shot and want to do something different. Just not sure what would work best or does that not matter? I was reading and saw some stuff on a twilight cleric possibly
I need to dip for now but do feel free to keep asking questions and check the other channels (id:browse )
Hi i started to make a character from my oc, so i was wondering if my character can have two classes?
Yes, there are optional rules for multiclassing, so you could check to see if your DM allows them. As a fair warning, it's usually recommended not to multiclass as a new player, as doing so makes character building considerably more complicated, and it's very easy to accidentally make a very weak character.
A character can multi-class if there are a higher level than 1 (no .5 of a class) using the multi-class rules - https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Multiclassing
But Dosh's assessment is correct - not usually recommended for new folks due to layering complexities needlessly
Thnks you!
Is it also true that I can't play warlock cuz i'm new ?
I am new and I play one
warlocks are probably the simplest of the caster classes so I would say that's deinitely not true
not at all true. Try whatever sounds fun.
Certain Dungeon Masters might have restrictions at their tables (such as not allowing multiclassing), but generally, you can build with any official source.
People will often caution newer users not to build characters at too high a level as many games begin at level 1 and wanting to bring your level 10, multiclass character built based off a youtube concept makes that a hard (and disappointing) fit
Thanks you guys 💖
One last question, is there a catalog of the creatures that can gives powers to the warlock ? Or we can use our imagination?
i believe theres a short description in every subclass of warlock
The individual subclasses give you a few recommended ideas, but you can work with your DM if you'd like to pick something outside that list or make something up entirely!
Thank you! ^^
HEY FELLOW DRUIDS😆
Please be careful with all caps - some folks can have issues reading long lengths of text that is in all caps.
Every Spellcaster!!: 😆😃😃🤣😂🤣🤣😂😂😁😀😁😁😂
so srry bro, didnt kno thats my bad
Well now you do! Welcome to the server. Have you played D&D before?
Hiii
Helloo
Hru??
Good hbu?
If you all ahven't seen it yet, we have some useful reosurces in the pinned messages here on the channel.
Oh i'll read that then ty
Feel free to check them out and if you have any specific D&D qquestions you can ask them here or in an appropriate channel here on the server.
Am I allowed to send photos here?
You can link to images so long as you provide context.
Only certain channels have image permissions

And any images posted in them must be appropriate for the channel's intended use.
alr, I found an easy character sheet is that ok to send somewhere?
Hello everybody! Longtime writer/actor/gamer, new D&D player. Happy to find the Discord!
Again you can use an image hosting site and link to it that way - making sure to provide text context when you share that link to the image here.
oh sorry I didn't understand what you meant before
Character sheet 😄
even though its like the top of pinterest
I would recommend using dnd beyond’s character sheet
is it less complicated?
It automates a lot of it
Hi! I am not new to DND but I haven't been with it in a while so if anyone could possibly help me make a character, it would be really helpful because I wanna join the DND group at my new school😅
Do you have any ideas at all yet or are you starting from a complete blank? 🙂
FYI, We have a great channel for discussing character builds: #character-discussion
(it's okay to discuss a bit here at least from a D&D newcomers perspective - just know we have a specific channel dedicated to the topic)
Can anyone invite me to there d&d beyond campaign if they wanna play i would like to be a thri kreen but i cant so im a dragonborne
You can buy the race individually if you don’t want to shell out for the full book. Otherwise, those sorts of solicitations are against DDB’s Terms of Service.
How would you buy the race? With real money or in game points?
Real money. Scroll down the page and you’ll see the options you can buy individually: https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/spelljammer-adventures-in-space
Check out #find-a-game
Hey, im a new to the game but have always wanted to play. Would anyone be willing to explain/ go over some fighting things with me in a call?
It’s kinda a bit much to explain over a vc
I would recommend reading the basic rules, linked in the pinned messages
I had an idea of like a disney princess who just sings to animals
Probably a Druid then
Shepherd Druid could work
ok
I would throw some caution about jumping in with shepherd druid. Full caster that focuses on summons?
Yeah, hard to play, just fits that idea best
If the concept is just talking to animals a ranger can do that too
Singing to animals doesnt mean controlling them necessarily
Bruh the hassle
The hassle for what?
A forest gnome or firbolg also have the ability to interact with animals, so those are possibilites worth considering. If you wanna get detailed about your options, check out #character-discussion.
ok👍
Alright I'm starting kinda with a clean slate, I've only played homebrews from what my friends and I have made so now time to get into the big Boi dnd things
I know a bit about it i’ve already created a character a dragon born artificer who Lost his arm and made a new one for himself, using his magic i’m looking for a game
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
Can someone help better explain spell slots for me? I just wanna make sure I understand it all
A spell slot is a dollar.
If you want to cast a spell, you gotta spend a dollar.
If you run out of dollars, you can’t cast spells.
Currently I’m lvl 4
I have 4 first lvl
And 3 second level spells
So am I able to cast 3 second lvl and 4 first level? So 7 spells in general
You get paid again when you take a long rest.
Is that how it works?
Yep! With seven slots, you could cast seven spells.
So I can cast four first level spells and 3 second level
Yes
You can also use your 2nd-level slots to cast 1st-level spells (but not the reverse).
But let’s say I use my guiding bolt at second level. Now I only can cast 2 more second level but still 4 first level?
Some of your 1st-level spells may have a more powerful effect if you do.
Interesting okay that makes more sense
I'm wondering about the usability of a feat on a certain class, would that be a rules discussion or a character discussion?
#dnd-rules for “How does this feat work with this class feature?”
#character-discussion for “Should I pick this feat for my class?”
Yep. For using a higher level spell slot, Guiding Bolt does a little extra damage.
So I can cast guiding bolt like 7 times if I truly wanted too
Yep
I appreciate the examples, thank you for your time
And four of those would be using your four 1st level spell slots, doing 4d6 damage, and three of them would be using your three 2nd level spell slots, doing 5d6 damage.
Now for spiritual weapon what would happen if I casted it multiple times
at once? the prior ends.
Got it
"You create a floating, spectral weapon within range that lasts for the duration or until you cast this spell again."
Also, it's a 2nd level spell, so you need to spend at minimum a 2nd level spell slot
So right now, you'd only be able to cast it three times in a day, since you only have three slots that are at least 2nd level.
Got it okay. Just wondeirng cause I wanna try and make a build with like floating swords
Got it I think I got the spell slots thing
You can flavor your spiritual weapon as an array of floating swords, yeah. Flavor is free - "The weapon can take whatever form you choose."
But it still only does the damage of one sadly
It's just always a melee attack against a target within 5 ft of the weapon and dealing force damage
Got it
You could flavor the higher levels, which add extra damage dice, as adding extra swords.
Just want to make sure but when doing Ability scores that's something ultimately for the dm to decide right?
Hiya
The DM decides the method (Point buy, Standard Array, Rolling), the player decides which ability to give which score
I figured but just wanted to double check
Hi
Heyy
don't heal people that aren't downed
yup
once you hit level 5, embrace the blender grindset and cast spirit guardians whenever possible
that's about it, clerics are pretty straightforward
oh yeah and if you have any slots left at the end of the day, burn them on aid
I have a level 1 teifling bard, and I couldn't help but notice how weak my cantrips are. Some of the other classes have some others that are a lot stronger, is this just a bard thing or did I make my character wrong?
Cantrips aren't especially strong since they're free to use. Are there specific ones you mean as an example?
i have 3 only, dancing lights, thaumaturgy, and viscous mockery
Though also yeah looks liek bards dont get the more damaging ones
Kinda feel like both dancing lights and thaumaturgy can furfill similar purposes
1 one time i used it (dancing lights) in a campaign once was to just help my friends navigate a dark cave
Dancing lights is a weaker one
Thaumaturgy is good utility
Vicious mockery is good for its rider, the damage is just padding
As a bard you’ll want to be using bardic inspiration, and casting big powerful spells you can hold concentration on, to buff allies and debuff enemies
When you get another cantrip I would suggest taking guidance. It’s good for out of combat checks like social checks, and boosting initiative
new player, never played before, anyone willing to accept me? am happy to do an interview!

ive downloaded a few resources, not necessarily what you guys have available, im embarrased to say i cant really make sense of it all? could anyone walk me through the first steps?
Are you sure it's DND 5e resources?
im not no, im not sure which edition the ruleset i downloaded is
Check the bot post right up above for the basic rules for DND 5e
Probably just use what we sent you then
DND has just always been on my nerd bucketlist, im a good improver and comedian i just need help getting a foot in the door
its been nigh impossible to find any resources or means to find people lol
The resources are freely available in the bot post above
As for means to find people, have a look for game shops near you for in person games. As for online games, we have some places to find people here. I recommend you familiarise yourself with the rules first
thanks so much for being so welcoming!
after i get done reading the rules and such what should i do?
Probably make a practice character using dnd beyond. Then you’re ready to start looking for a group
thanks for being so helpful pixel!
All good! I try my best
youre a legend ❤️
im making an aberrant mind sorcerer, is the spell summon aberration just insanely powerful or do i just not understand it properly?
What makes it seem super powerful? It’s just a standard single ally summon spell
the ability to summon something like a Slaad which at least from what ive been told is very strong
It also has a very specific costly component you need to get
If you read it fully, you don’t use the slaad statblock. You use a specific statblock provided by the spell, modified based on which option you pick
oh ok that makes sense now thanks
hello!
Hi
Are you new to dnd or just to this server?
so i need some assistance over... just about everything..
Maybe ask in #dm-discussion
this server
i know dnd for 3 years
K
This channel is specifically for help for people new to dnd. For help with making a campaign, maybe ask in #dm-discussion
Or #dm-world-building for world building and lore
Wait, is the astral in astral plane NOT the cosmic space we know?
Not really
Space as we know it would be on the material plane (I think)
However, spelljammer, the dnd space setting, is set in the astral plane
So does that mean that the astral in astral self isnt all stars and constellations?
No, it is

It’s not directly related to the astral plane
Yo I Wana try bard any sugestions
Don’t expect to be doing a ton of damage. Remember to hand out bardic inspiration, and remind your party members to use it. Focus on buffing allies and debuffing enemies
So following this, does this mean astral elves arnt space elves
Think of it like this: astral plane is magic space, normal space also exists but it generally can’t be travelled to with modern FR technology
Or no one has. Idk, im not a lore expert
there's Space, then there's the Astral Plane.
The Astral Self Monk isn't explicitly about the plane or the cosmos, just your true self.
The Circle of Stars Druid is about actual stars.
hey guys.
i’ve played a lot of tabletop 3rd edition and tried to get into 5e but lost the addiction due to work etc.
how easy is it to transition from tabletop to online? and where should i go to find a flexible aus party?
it should be pretty easy to move from in person to online. A lot of groups use VTTs (virtual tabletops) for battlemaps. You can have a look in our #find-a-game channels here to find some games
How’s everyone doing
alr sweet thank you !
Question for the DMS, do you create your own adventures mainly or do you pull from somewhere for them?
try #dm-discussion might get more traction.

hi i like to see dnd and i want to learn it can someone help?
Check out the links just above 🙂
oki thx
Hey, I don't know if this is the right place.
I'm a new DM and next week we'll be finishing the first campaign with the players.
Therefore, I created a boss that I hope will be an adequate challenge, but I would like to ask if he is not too weak/strong?
The team consists of 4 players at lvl 3 (barbarian, warlock, priest, wizard). The players handle the game very well mechanically, but the characters are not min/max. Barb and wizard are game veterans, but they are playing DND for the 1st time. Warlock and priest are new players like me.
I created this boss on dnd beyond in the homebrow section, I don't really know how to show it here.
Would anyone like to take a look to see if it makes sense and isn't too unbalanced?
Yeah sure
Im not sure how to link it.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/3932061-priest-of-cyric
does it work?
My English is very poor, so all corrections and language errors are also welcome ;D
I dont get the roll 4 six sided dice for my statß
if i enemies abound an enemy, does that mean they will attack anyone at random until me or my allies attack them?
hello! I am currently new to the game! looking for a group to play with if they would like a noob cleric life domain hanging around to heal

so how does hp at higher levels work?
do you roll ur hit die, add CON modifier, and add total to maximum HP?
each level?
i dont really understand what the PHB is saying
You can either roll or take the average and then add the constitution modifer - and this happens at each level up.
and you add all of that to ur current max?
Yes - it now becomes your max HP.
thanks a bunch!
I usually go by the system where you can roll your hit die once, and from there either take that roll, take the average, or reroll and take the new number
As this is for newcomers we try to explain the rules as they are and not any customized rules different D&D groups use.
thats true.. but its very common for people to roll low and have low cons
and average does counteract this but it doesnt really let you go for higher hp if you need it
Yeah definitely check with your D&D group on any custimizations/homebrew rules they use.
with the extra spells drom my subclass, do i get them in additon to the normal spells for warlock or do i have to pick them instead of a normal spell
What subclass are you
For Warlocks, they’re just added to your class spell list.
dao genie warlock
So you can pick from those whenever you get a chance to learn a spell.
They are just added, yeah so you can if you want pick them.
Subclass spells tend to work differently depending on the class.
hi guys
I can play both player and dm forever
hello, cleric here looking for a group...
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
how do i figure out how many spells ican have per level for warlock the table doesnt make sense to me
So warlocks are little unique in their spell casting.
You have spells known, spell slots and spell level.
Check the “Cantrips Known” and “Spells Known” columns.
Spells known = number of spells you can know
Spell slots = How many times you can cast those spells
Spell level = is the level you cast that spell slot at, warlocks always cast at the highest level
i have, it doesnt make sense
A level 4 warlock, for example, knows 3 cantrips and 5 spells.
what do you mean cast at the highest level?
So a level 2 warlocks, Knows 3 spell, has 2 spell slots and casts those spells at 1st level.
A warlock only ever has spell slots of a single level, which increases over time.
what about a level 6 warlock?
Cantrips you just know and can cast at will.
so i only ever have level 1 spells?
and i can only know level 1 spells?
No
At 1st level, you know two 1st-level spells of your choice from the warlock spell list.
The Spells Known column of the Warlock table shows when you learn more warlock spells of your choice of 1st level and higher. A spell you choose must be of a level no higher than what’s shown in the table’s Slot Level column for your level. When you reach 6th level, for example, you learn a new warlock spell, which can be 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level.
Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the warlock spells you know and replace it with another spell from the warlock spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
You get them back on a SR which is not typical for casters, and you get invocations.
how do i join a game
okay im just not gonna make a warlock then because that makes no sense
#find-a-game can get you started!
yeah but i was looking in looking for players and didnt understand how to join a game
A warlock at levels 1-2 has 1st-level spell slots. For those levels, you can only choose 1st-level spells.
At levels 3-4, they have 2nd-level spell slots, so they can pick 1st- or 2nd-level spells.
And so on.
so at level 6 i can learn 7 level 3 spells?
Up to 3rd-level, yes.
and i just have 2 slots for everything?
Yes
oh
And any levelled spell you do cast automatically comes out at the best level you can do, so when you hit warlock 5, your spells that use slots are cast at level 3. Short rest recovery, invocations and pact features are what define a warlock.
Also "ELDRITCH BLAST"
It's always been a shame that agonising blast has been such a "prerequisite" if you're not a fighting warlock.
what are good pact of the tome cantrips to have for a warlock
Usually I recommend utility stuff, because eldritch blast and your other spells fill damage
Lemme to pull up a list
Bleh
vicious mockery, thorn whip and shocking grasp?
Mage hand, minor illusion, message, spare the dying, prestidigitation, acid splash, true strike, thorn whip
Those are all nice ones
Just keep in mind that thorn whip pulls a target (creature size large or smaller) towards you. So you might be pulling an enemy into melee attack range on yourself.

i played a dnd-like game on roblox with turn-based battles a long time ago does that count as "me playing dnd"
Did it use the basic rules of d&d like rolling to hit or was it just a turn based combat system? Did you play with other users or only against a pc?
I ask because I wouldn't consider playing baldur's gate 3 "playing d&d" even though it uses the system pretty faithfully.
guidance is really good for pact of the tome thats all i will say
Any spam able support cantrip is nice
besides aginising blast, what is helpful as an invocation?
depends on what you wanna do
but if youre pact of the tome
book of ancient secrets is really good
what spells would be good for book of ancient secrets?
idk detect magic and identify might come up often just choose what you would think would be good
pretty sure find familair is a ritual
https://imgur.com/a/yPWPKwl this is my final spell list
I am new to dnd
Cool, whatcha need help with
How do I start?
No
Learning the rules and making a character are still a good starting point though
Okay
Ah, rip
Sry
You should be able to find stuff online, dnd beyond for example
what is roll20 and those other apps
Np
A dice rolling website

Oh right we have that
Check out the Basic Rules there. ☝️
I did my session 0 today and it was so EXHAUSTING
I had to explain them everything 102848282 times
Because they are very new 😭
That how it be
Don’t worry dnd is a slow process
Step one is figuring out the basics, then I’d say step two is finding a party
I tried and tried to understand the rules from reading the books and it just didn't sink in for some reason until I started playing BG3 😂. Then everything I'd read suddenly clicked.
But yes, it's a lot - it's not just you. Worth it though!
Anywho yesterday being my first day playing, I will say I had to do a little work before the game today. Right now our party is trying to get past some ducks
The ducks are making music 😂😂😂😂
D20 shows if you succeed or not so 1-10 you don't succeed 11-20 you do.
The other dice for damage
D&D is all made up as I've heard and read
And the percentile dice which may as well not exist
What do you mean by that
It’s the “d100” which is very rarely used for calculating distance and stuff
But, it is… very boring
Yeah, I agree. I was wondering what that's for. If it doesn't get used that what exactly is the point of d100
Yes, I don't know why
So if its for distance what if u get a NAT 1
Hum, I don't that. I'm not a player so how should I know, lol.
I honestly debated between dm and player and now im a dm 😂
(I have a suggestion never play both player and dm cause that's a big mistake. It will only confuse everyone.)
Definitely not at the same table in the same game.
I found that out yesterday
Yeah, I agree
But if you’re in multiple games, that’s possible. I run two games and play in three.
Yeah, true, cause I go to school it be hard to join a campaign(igspecaly one with other teens)
Why do I feel like thats off topic
This channel is for helping people clarify fundamental elements of the game and pointing out where/how to get started. General discussion of the game, which this is tending toward, goes in #dnd-discussion.
Oh okay
Good to know
Any idea why our dm doesn't ask us to do skill checks. I am a bard. I am not sure when silver tongue comes into play
Well it’s not technically a 100 sided dice, it’s two 10 sided dice
That you add together
That's something to ask your dm
Talk to them.
Just talk to them when online(not during a game)
I would post a picture but I am unable to
A skill check is when a player attempts something that they could potentially fail at. You wouldn’t have to roll a check to walk, for instance. Is your DM new?
Yeah, you can only post art you made or a picture of your character
They might be or mot familiar with a bard
I'm a new dm
No I’m just fully un able to post pictures
Yeah, maybe
So again, the solution is to talk to them and ask how they handle skill checks.
Yeah
I get the default answer is talk to your dm
What do you mean
I just played yesterday as a bard for the first time. Felt like something is off
Only certain channels have image permissions. If you want to share a relevant photo, use a site like Imgur and link to it, while explaining the link. (Don’t just drop it in the channel without context.)
I mean dm is the one who decides when you use skill checks
That's cause you're still new
Yeah I just read that
Everyone here says talk to your dm
HAHAHA
I have absolutely played sessions where we didn’t roll a dice, but that’s not common. It does happen, though.
Cause you should
For saying “l a m e”
Dose that to me
Thank you, dnd sever
I do. But I want more info before I do.
Very cool
Yep
I want a 2nd opinion
A second opinion on?
Just talk to your dm
How should or could be played differently
It's the best advice I can give you
No julie
You’d have to tell us more about the situation.
Be careful what you type
I would but apparently no one wants to hear about it
Well normally skill checks are done for
Attacks
Physical activity like jumping a gap
Mind stuff like perception, investigation, looking for secret stuff etc
That was kinda rude(let's stay in subject now(
That’s the basics really
Exactly
Tell us some examples of where you think a skill check would have made sense but the DM didn’t call for one.
Usually if something would require you to think about it and use your strength or smarts or whatever it’s a skill check
Persuasion and deception checks
I can't think of any so yeah you hath to
I mean you said it yourself it’s a roll
Stay is subject or you could get a warning
I almost think the dm is waiting for me to ask can I Persuasion this thing
Well, yeah
Well it's the best thing to do
I didn't know I had to
You could try that, or clarify “I’m trying to [skill] here.” The DM may not have the intuition yet to know what your intent is.
Why are you arguing anyways, were just trying to help you get a better understanding of how D&D works
Very True
Julie is am not arguing. I am upset that when I see people come here for help they get go away and talk to your dm
