idunno if this is a question for this channel, but for my own interest, why is the classic 'meeting in a tavern' introduction so popular?? is it just because taverns fit best as the archetypical 'generic fantasy social hub'?
Because a tavern provides a plausible place where many different people would have reason to meet in a social environment
Historically taverns and coffee houses would be places you'd conduct business, meet with people, etc
It's "neutral ground" so to speak
Characters can be there for a variety of reasons, and show of their personalities there in a variety of ways.
It's adaptable.
makes sense, i can see it
Mines a spirit bard and they're currently going through a haunted woods. My motivation is being like my grandmother who was an adventurer and I'm trying to find a party to join
Im slightly confused by spellcasting- are all spell slots of a certain level?
I'd say you heard about some Adventurers heading into a haunted forest while at a tavern. Decided to follow
for example do all of your spells slots become second level when you gain second level spell slots?
No, they remain the level they are, but you will get new spell slots of increasing level
Only Warlock's spell slots are all the same level and always at the highest.
For other spellcasters their class table tells you how many spell slots you have at each level.
Okay, that’s good to know, since my character is a hexblade(lvl 3). So how many spell slots should they have?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#TheWarlockTable
At level 3 a warlock has 2 spells slots. They are at level 2
So youll unlock different spells at different levels, but as you progress in level, you can use most lower level spells in higher level spell slots to do more damage or whatever is does.
Alright, thanks for the help!
To read a warlock's class table the 'spell slots' collumn tells you how many slots you have.
The 'slot level' tells you what level these slots are.
Can I ask for server help in here too? 🫣
For other spellcasters their table will tell you how many slots you have of each level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard#TheWizardTable
For example a 3rd level wizard has four level 1 slots and two level 2 slots
I’m trying to figure out how to post looking for players

Does having an established backstory for your character matter all too much?
Having the basics helps, where did you come from, how did you get your skills/powers, why are you out adventuring
My current back story is “grow up in the underdark but escaped to the swordcoast during an uprising of his clan, found himself in a swamp and was taken in by a witch/hag who taught him herbalism and cooking. The witch died so set out to see more of the world and ended up on a boat from neverwinter to icewind dale as the ships cook
The story of your character is what happens in-game. Your backstory only needs to be enough to set the stage.
What do you and your DM need to know about this character to get the real story started?
Another way to frame it is making a "front story". Here's an article on it. About 5 minute read. https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/573-character-creation-and-the-importance-of
People
It took me like 5 years to come up with a backstory for my skyrim character
And a lot of knowledge of the lore to make something semi belivable
Hi I have a question
Hello friend. This is a good place to ask.
As in a deer?
Like a goat man
Saytr race
Yes
The Satyr race is official content for DnD 5e, but you should confirm with your DM to see if there’s any races they don’t want due to campaign settings or whatever still.
Ok ty
Can someone at least help me write a backstory
I have no idea where to start
I know everything else about my character
Dragonborn
Druid
And that's what I'm trying to figure out
Thats also what im trying to figure out
What is your character doing before they started adventuring?
That's what im trying to figure out
Were they always a druid, or did they become a druid?
What circle of Druid are you thinking off taking
Well we can’t really answer that question for you, I would just recommend choosing an option that you think would be the most fun to roleplay
hey anyone want to teach a begginer the basics? i have 3 houres of free time right now anyone free to help me? im open to a short game session ill really be thankful!
There's some handy links here to get you started.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
But if you've got any specific questions, ask away!
I dont even know how to answer that
They became a druid
oh imeant if someone was willing to play my first game with me
When i selected it on the character builder
i dont really understand those tutorials their kinda complex
THANK YOU
All we can do is ask general questions that might spark an idea.
Ok so was your clan a bunch of druids? Is it just someone in your family that is a Druid and they are passing on their knowledge to you
We can't give you an answer here, because there is no right or wrong answer. Your backstory is your own personal choice.
What's one specific thing from the tutorials you don't understand?
It’s your character. Having somebody else make your background would make it so it’s not fully your character. We can give you ideas to inspire you, but the end goal is for that character to be your ideas so you best know how to roleplay as them.
It might help to ask your DM about druids in their setting. For example...
- Are druids commonplace or rare?
- Are there any particular parts of the world where druids can be found?
The same for dragonborn. See if there's anything that clicks together.
Or it might help to read through the available backgrounds, see if one of those sparks an idea.
Why did you pick a dragonborn druid? What kind of story do you want to tell with that combination that you couldn't with another?
My normal thought processes for character backstories is
- Racial context (What race are they, how/where were they raised)
- Class context (What class are they, what made them into the class like family or job etc etc and why)
- Class aspirations (Planned subclass or multiclass and why)
- Campaign aspirations (Why are they adventuring, what are they trying to achieve)
And throughout that think about how it has made them into the person they are today
what experiences may they have had to make their personality how it is
I usually try to tie my characters into the theme of the campaign, so my backstories usually help reinforce those themes.
My backstories are also Swiss cheese -- enough there to give them structure, but full of holes.
You don't have to answer every question about your character.
You just need enough to set the stage for Episode 1.
i mostly used a questionnaire i found on reddit based on the knife theory, works pretty well so far
You guys don't understand.
I don't roleplay, as in play a role
I don't write characters.
I play myself. Different aspects of myself that I feel comfortable writing. I then use the worldbuilding tools available to me to create a reasonable justification to why they are the way they are.
I cannot make a fleshed out backstory for a character I have no experience with in a world I know nothing about.
My main sonas in several other fandoms took me years to come up with semi belivable backstories for.
I have like 8 Pokémon OCs I've had for years. Only one of them has any semblance of a backstory.
In that case: we don't know anything about your world either.
Which is why I recommended asking your DM.
I've played Skyrim longer than I've been writing. And only a year ago did I come up with a backstory or even a name for Gaz'je.
So you're telling me you know nothing about dnd lore
in that case maybe you can adopt your life story into the character?
Every game is a world of its own. Yours might take place in an established setting, or something completely original.
Backstory is not needed when the real story is the game you play
You might wanna pump the brakes on the abrasive attitude when people are trying to help
Only your DM can tell you about the world you'll be playing in.
There is no one single "D&D lore"
We don't know what setting you're playing in, or what variations your DM may be adding to that setting if it's an official one
We can't tell you "Oh, your druid might come from this town" if that town may not even exist in your game.
Again, all we can give you is questions that might spark an idea.
You can do with those questions what you will.
Also #character-discussion would be a much better place
But I strongly recommend that you go in with less of a "But I can't do that" attitude and more of a willingness to engage constructively with people trying to assist you
Well, blank backstories are viable, over a campaign you can discover for yourself what the character is truly like as the story naturally takes you through different experiences
"[Character name] lived a plain and boring live. So now, they go adventuring to find meaning to their life" is an acceptable backstory as well
and from that you can then form a backstory
doing "yes, and" technique also works when writing backstory
they live a boring life > ask yourself, what do you find boring? > "wake up, go to school, sleep" > thats what your PC do for 18 years
something like that
I don't know if this is helpful, but I've had a lot of players who "just play themselves" - and I think that's a totally valid way to make a character.
Like playing "me, but if I was a druid" is absolutely roleplaying IMO. And that can be super fun for the whole table. ✌️
What is the reason for why you wanted to play as a druid? What made you choose the druid class?
Elemental magic and basic healing spells
He specializes in cold but can do pretty well with others
I imagine a fun interaction like "YOU CAN DO LIGHTNING?" "Well duh"
So you’re telling me, that you got interested in a class, because you found the wonders of Elemental magic to be cool. And that the idea of using healing spells to help others interests you. And that the idea of controlling lightning excites you.
might someone recomend me a goofy combo like a lizard monk or somthing moree goofyer?
Sounds like you have the reason your character became a druid 🤷♂️
Goliath wizard with a stone tablet as their spell book
u my friend is a genius
a senile yet stealthy rogue
No the idea of controlling ice excites me
The idea of surprising others with the fact that im capable of the others just as well excites me more
zealot barb who just believes he is a paladin
A Goliath Barbarian who thinks they’re a really good rogue, but just intimidates people into not seeing them instead
YES
jezus so many good ideas i love u all
Do like the most peaceful combination you can think of but make them overly aggressive and intimidating
I've got a kobold rune knight who is angry no-one takes him seriously so he just grows to large when belittled and acts like an actual dragon
Owlin cleric
^
This would be better suited to #character-discussion
This channel is for covering the basics and assisting newcomers with the fundementals
What do wretched and squalid mean
Variants of poverty/disparity
These are lifestyle choices, it means how much money you spend each day on trivial things like food and living
Wretched: of poor quality; very bad.
Squalid: extremely dirty and unpleasant, especially as a result of poverty or neglect.
Your DM most likely will not take that into account for actual mechanics(for example taking away money for each in-game day based on your lifestyle choice)
Even though it's accurate, it would seem very unfun
from what ive heard so far it seems like most DM dont like to go too in-depth when it comes to resource management, like counting ammo and stuff
It depends on how challenging the DM wants to be. But most dont AFAIK
Yeah, I personally don't like tracking food water and ammunition, I just say that the players have an unlimited amount of those nonmagical resources when they need to use them
Yeah I was a gun toting arti in the campaign ive just come out of and I advocated for my own ammo creation and consumption for flavour as my DM didnt care
It's up to you in most cases
I would only do that if the players request to do so or I'm running a campaign where resources being scarce is one of the challenges I plan to add
This enables you to wield a shield if you had a handcrossbow, which is quite the advantage
Nah I never went down that route
We were using exandria firearms as well so upon acquiring Bad News the shield wouldn't have been too optimal
Hello, everyone!! I'm brand new to the D&D world and am..well..a bit overwhelmed by all of this...it seems amazing....!!!
Welcome, it is a lot but just take it bit by bit and you should be fine
Have you got the free basic rules?
Welcome! It’s a lot to learn but if you take it in pieces, you’ll be able to learn it quickly
Average?
Lifestyle
I have found (and read) the basic rules on the d&dbeyond web page....
is the subscription there....worth the $$..doesn't seem that much $$...?
It’s average like a commoners life style
It’s worth it to me, but I DM a lot, and create a lot of characters for my campaigns, as well as it allows me to content share with the players in my campaign
I'm just worried that it will take me a while to get it..the game and how it is played...I'm interested in the text only version..to start with but seems to me that building characters might be a good place to start..that, alon, is a daunting task...??
Greetings!
There’s a good article here that covers some popular options for playing online.

I've played a few sessions of 5th edition DnD, but other than that I'm completely new. I'm looking forward to getting into the community!

I'm looking forward to getting into the community as well but I have not played a single..anything, yet..andhave only treid to create characters....and failed...i may be in well over my head here...?
In what way do you think your characters failed?
Is there a specific point where you got stuck?
laughs in the sense that i get into the process and get confused as hell about what i am doing.....do I/we just create characters and find a group/campaign that they will fit into or find a group that needs a specific character and create one that way..??
character creation dndbeyond playlist on how to make 4 of the classes
They really need to do the rest of these videos
is it possible to read a past campaign.....I will only be able to play the text way, to start with and it may help me if i can read just how it all actually happens..or no..??
Yeah which one is that
It's generally recommended not to spoil yourself for what happens in an adventure. And sometimes, your DM might not even be running a published adventure, and will instead be running a campaign of their own creation!
Average
ah, i see....so..and bear with me andmy stupidity here..each campain is basically the same..in the sens of startin point and goals....etc and etc or no..i'm still not cler on how it all takes place...
They're not! Two campaigns can be completely different! It's really up to the DM to decide the setting. There's dozens of premade adventures to purchase and play, and plenty of DMs just make up their game from whole cloth.
wow..i just assumed there were basic campains the DM just freestyled particular parts..a brand new campain sound like even more fun.....!!!
Modest
Would it be ok to mention in here that there are massive amounts of D&D items, books, starter kits, etc for very cheap on Amazon thanks to Prime Day
I wish I had money...🥲
More of a #dnd-discussion topic
So how much would a 14 yo db weigh on average
The game assumes for the most part that you'll be playing an adult, so the average and random weight information for Dragonborn (which can be found in the Basic Rules) is for an adult dragonborn character
14 for db is equivalent to like, 15-17 for human i think
So almost an adult
Are they a muscular Dragonborn or a skinny one, tall, short, chubby, lean it’s upto you and how you picture the PC in your head
Okay then
Is there like a sheet
That describes the different races average height and weight
So from my understanding a 15 yo dragonborn on average is 6'5 and 300 lbs
Here is a link to the exact table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#HeightandWeight
I already found it
So if an adult is 6'6 I imagine a late teenager would be about 6'
Maybe I'll do 5'11 cuz smol boi uwu
And the average weight for a 15 year old male is 145.7 lbs
So db are roughly double the weight of humans
18 is 156.6 so it holds
So an adult human is 156
An adult db is 300
A 15 yo db is 145
A 14 yo db would probably be 280-285 ish
But again since I wanna make him a bit smaller ill probably say 270
Just wondering how my character looks
Whats a ywkla
Yklwa*
Also what's the difference between all the druidic focuses
Starting ones I mean
Like totem and staff
It’s like a very short spear with longer blade on the end of it.
So a sword
Are we getting kinda far afield here? The weight of a character is very tangential to new player questions about how to play
I just wanna flesh out my character
I love how nobody has even attempted to fight this
Alright so can anyone tell me what the difference between these is
Sprig of Mistletoe
Totem
Wooden Staff
Yew Wand
flavor
So it says its a spellcasting focus
they are all mechanically identical. You just pick which one you think matches the fantasy of your character better
Yes. The wooden staff tastes like wood, with a staffy texture.
Do I have to be like holding it
Or can I just keep the holly in my bag
And it work the same
I believe any spell focus needs to actually be held.
If you are casting a spell that requires a material component, you must either be holding a spellcasting focus, or have a free hand to reach for the material component from a component pouch. The 4 thinks you just listed are the druid's options for different spellcasting focuses
@mortal elbow Again, this would be more suited to #character-discussion
So do I get any money to start or is that a dm's call
There was a prompt for equipment OR money but I'd rather have the gear tbh
Both options are technically legal by default, but that's definitely something you should ask your DM about.
Are there homebrew rules for a pokemon DnD game? XD
If I’ve got a -1 as Constitution Modifier and a 1d10 as hit points, do I get 9 Hit points at level 1 ?
Should ask in #homebrew
funny i just said to my brother that would be a mass hit 😛
Yes, which tells you it might not be a good idea to have a negative CON mod
Most definitely, thanks man
this is what we call living on the edge
i'm a total noob to D&D is it hard to find sessions online?
With patience, you're bound to find one eventually! Check out the link below for some tips.
?tag new online
also my brother gave me this huge list of races and stuff but now that guy is linked to his d&d beyond thing
is there a way around that or should i look at making a character after finding a group
Go through the character creation process to know how it proceeds and come up with some loose character concepts. Fine tune one once you have a group!
i have a concept in mind for each class and race combination lol
and no they're not all the same
i'm not new to RP, just new to D&D 😄
I opened this video that explained the subclasses... and he began to talk about how many voted on the most OP version of those.. I instantly clicked out of that.. lmao
I was like.. I don't want to know that my alchemist has only 2%!
so i watched a lore video and that was cool 😄
To be honest if my players were like “I want to play this subclass but it sucks compared to others” and they have a point to why it’s not as powerful, then I would probably change it to make them feel equally as strong
well my brother just told me that alchemists roll for potions every day and such
at the cost of spell slots
Yes that is what Alchemist does
To start off: once for free, and additional for spell slots, yeah
ah that makes it sound like a little bit more of a perk than a loss lol
i always appreciate creative classes like druids, tinkerers, sorcerers
spellswords.. all though I haven't seen a variation of that 🤔
Spellsword is more of a playstyle than a class. There are plenty of classes and subclasses that fight with weapons but have access to magic, such as Paladins, Ranger, Eldritch Knights, Arcane Tricksters, Hexblades, Artificers, etc
i'm not consistent enough to play a paladin 😛
tricksters and artificers are cool tho
I was planning on a gnome alchemist with a last name Bottleboots
coz he'd be loud with all those bottles 😛
but there's a severe choice paralysis going on here 😛
Wait, alchemists get potions?
Where in the rulebooks are the pieces for describing these professions?
Tasha’s
Alchemist is not a profession, it’s a subclass for the Artificer class
That makes more sense.
I'm super new to DnD, are there any tips for starting out? (Planning to only play online)

Ty
I rec seeing if you have any local game shops hosting Adventurers League, casual games, or Learn to Plays as well
I don't think there is, semi large town (I think) but it is the UK so it isn't too common where I am
I could play online though
Your role playing does not affect the class you pick
Its a game
oh i think it's fun to make choices based on a character's setting
playing a forest burning druid feels weird to me
And yet, its fine if thats what you want to do and your table is cool with it
i'd turn into an oathbreaker the first session
😄
Not because of criminality but because of nat 1s

How hard is a bard to roleplay
I mean there is literally a Wildfire druid
Depends on the character and their personality, not your class
well if you object to me by using this as your arguement... 😛
''does not depend on class'' ''bro there is wildfire druid''
The two statements are separate, and directed at two different people.
Wildfire druid is a common fantasy and as such has mechanical support.
The difficulty of roleplaying a character doesn't depend on their class.
Those statements aren't mutually exclusive.
oh no sure don't
glad we agree after all
😛
any class can be any type of persona, but I feel like a persona should at least be somewhat guided by a class
iidrc how others do it lol, I think that's a nice limitation to set on yourself
People are stressing over “roleplay” too much
It’s a game the point is to have fun
You aren’t performing on broadway, no one’s scoring you or paying for your performance
You can roleplay as little or as much as you and your table want
oh fair but the dm going like ''you get back to town, you rest, this is your next quest, let's go''
''roll initiative''
that ain't my kinda table i think 😛
tho it could surely be for others
Can I ask a monk related question here?
#character-discussion would likely work best.
Ok, thank you
Yeah I know some who enjoy the tactics/maps portion of the game way more than the RP. Similarly, I know some who go sessions without any kind of combat, and just let the RP flow. It varies wildly.
Every table will have a difference balance of roleplay, social and combat encounters. It is up to you to have a discussion with the DM and the table that suits you
yee even different tools to play in will change the outcome of that
Now that D&D beyond has maps my desire to get a digital map case grows.
I got impressed by that discord bot and then realised it wouldn't have maps
my bro & co made a table with a tv in it
but they don't really play anymore and i'm just getting started XD
Avrae does have a community-created alias for embedding maps but it’s very much Advanced imo.
I wonder if I could set up a quick MP mode in UE5 or unity 😛
But this is not really newcomer questions so I’ll forgo getting too much into that.
just make maps in there and grid them
Yeah I’m hoping to get one of those tables once I eventually renovate the house, but the table I want is around $5,000 😬
This is called a Virtual Tabletop (VTT) and the best option out there by far (like insanely far) is FoundryVTT
Excuse me
I think I'm understanding DnD more but I saw that there were different versions/editions
Does that mean the gameplay is different for each version? What's the difference?
Ty ty : ))
There are lots of differences in terms of rules, options, and gameplay emphasis. To summarize them all would be very difficult.
Yeah, the rules vary between editions, and the rules for one edition generally aren’t compatible with another.
Is there a commonly used edition?
All the current books are for fifth edition, which is what most groups are playing.
The latest, 5e
Ohh ok tysm y'all 💖💖
You can get started with fifth edition here:
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.

- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Ooo ty tyyy
how do you give your character stats?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t yet have a DM, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores, determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
ty
Have you picked a race and a class yet?
Your race will add to your abilities scores, so make sure to include that before you look up your ability modifiers.
And your class will guide which abilities to prioritize.
So now that I've got a character do I just look for a game?
Yeah, the hard part unfortunately
I'd suggest searching and making applications in as many different places as you can, are you looking to play in-person or online?
Online and does literally anyone play without voice chat 😭
Yup and good luck and have fun
My parents would freak the flip out if they knew I was on call with internet strangers
Plenty of westmarches
Which I personally don't care but last time I tried to play pokemon unite with a friend it turned into a whole lecture
Lol only till you get to know them
Hey hey, newish, played 3.5 for a long time and trying to get back into the swing of it with 5e. Anyone know if Myconid is allowed in official source material as a PC? Totally unfamiliar with anything past the core at the moment
Do you think it would be a problem if i gave my tiefling some animal like behaviours like purring and growling ?! Or is it like— against the rules,,, 😔
Not at all, personality quirks like that are great ways to make your character stand out
Perhaps your tiefling's fiendish origins tie back to Baphomet, the demonprince of beasts?
Awesome :DD and yeah!! Maybe!
I'm afraid there isn't an official myconid race, you could either ask your DM about homebrewing, or make the Custom Lineage rules in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything work. For the most part however, while learning the 5e rules it might be best to use an official race. For now, anyway.
These are the custom lineage options I'd choose for a myconid (or perhaps a myconid/human hybrid?):
Size: Medium
ASI: Wisdom
Feat: Telepathic
Trait: darkvision
Language: underdark
That's super helpful! I'll look into custom lineage. Thank you
Is there bounty hunters in some dnd settings ?! 👀 sorry i know its a dumb question im just like extremely new and clueless lolz
There are yes
You can both be a bounty hunter, or face them, it’s up to your dm if they will include it but if you’re playing dm then feel free to add whatever you want
Should I buy the player's handbook? I got some money to spare
If you like D&D and enjoy playing it, the Players Handbook is a good book to get.
We'll see. I haven't joined a campaign yet but I have made a character and that was pretty fun
Alright thanks!
Hey Am new at D&D is there anyone that would be interested in joining and starting my first campaign Group of 4-5 not including GM dm me to find the right date
Hello I'm new to this. I only tried once about 20 years ago lol but still interested and have the free time.
Ok cool just Do my and we can figure something out
It's a new edition in this day and age, and there's a change to it coming 2024.

Pinned message about playing online: #dnd-newcomers message
Me and my girlfriend are new to dnd, I'm dming and she wants to play as a taxabi rogue-assasin, is this viable? I figure not if he relies on stealth and she's solo, how can I balance this? Possibly setting up opportunity for pets like owl bears??
Taxabi I think will work well due to the wall climbing, but if any races are better please tell me
D&D adventures are typically optimized for 3 to 5 players (excluding the DM). One DM and one player adventures aren't typical.
Hmm, well I know of no one else to play with so I'm kind of ruling it out
Tabaxi have a climbing speed equal to their walking speed.
It will largely fall on you as the DM designing the adventure to be very leniant towards her character's skill set
The DMG offers this advice on having NPCs (such as a pet bear) join the party, the key is to make sure they dont overshadow her PC
You can find groups to join online (check #find-a-game ) or in person.
You can also use sidekicks (from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything) to fill in the missing roles in a party.
I'd just use a very simple tabletop like Owlbear Rodeo and use your unofficial sources seperate to the VTT
Thank you, I'll set up opportunities to get pets
Like maybe I can make them trick a faerie dragon into being subservient
Yeah, fun little social encounters like that I think would be great in a solo adventure
combat will be the biggest difficulty, because at lower levels one NPC scoring a critical hit could potentially one-shot them unconscious
Ruling that NPCs cannot critically hit, or granting them an NPC sidekick with a bit of healing magic could be good for counteracting that
Can you explaim how to use it seperate from the VTT? I'm not sure I understand
You dont need your ruleset to be programmed into the VTT to play. Owlbear Rodeo is essentially a digital shareable whiteboard. You would have your rules either printed out or on a seperate monitor for easy reference
So I could like screenshot a map and put it on the white board?
yes, you could take a battlemap youve found on google and upload it into Owlbear Rodeo to use as a map
Okay, thank you man you're a lifesaver
its a very easy to use program, I'd recommend just messing around with it for a few minutes
how do paladins work around some parts of their oaths that might become obtrusive, ex. the oath of devotion's tenet to be honest? if the party is in a situation where they have to lie can you legitimately just go 'i am a good boy and promised to always tell the truth, and therefore i'm going to go stand in that corner over there and wait while you lie through your teeth' or something
Pretty much
The real answer is that the dm doesn’t care most of the time. That’s how they work around it.
But yea never lying doesn’t mean you always have to speak up
The tenets may also not be totally restrictive - breaking the tenets to uphold the oath wouldn't be considered breaking the oath by many
Its a role playing GAME. Never forget that
That means you can do whatever you want. Literally
How strictly a paladin has to stick to their oath is entirely up to you and your DM, as are any potential consequences
There is no formula
No cops will come to your door
WOTC isnt watching you play
Figuring out how to play it and dealing with the consequences, if any, is part of the experience
No one here can tell you, only your table can
i played with so who was a paladin of bread and brought real croissants to the table to uphold his oath. If thats how u wanna do it, go nuts
If u wanna let stuff slide, do that too
never let the stereotypes of a class get in your way
i'm going to be honest, the only thing i'm getting from this is that i'm now very invested in what the spell list for a paladin of bread looks like
seriously though, that all makes sense
with sorcerer flexible casting can you create a spell slot higher than the currently available spell slot level? for example if you only have 4th level spells by default can you melt them down and make a 5th level spell slot?
Theoretically yes, but even if you melt down spell slots you can never have more sorcery point than your maximum
So you’d need to be level 7 to have enough sorcery points to make a 5th level spell slot
thanks
I'll add more - Tasha's Cauldron of Everything includes Sidekicks, which you could use to help give your player the strength-in-numbers, and the action economy, of a populous party
Arent pets just forms of sidekicks?
yes and no
Just giving an Owlbear as a friend isn't a Sidekick as per that rule
a Sidekick is a CR 1/2 or lower (1/4, 1/8, 0) creature, given levels of one of three Sidekick classes
so for example, a Wolf (CR 1/4) can gain levels in the Warrior class for Sidekicks, being a basic fighty one. It can get more HP, proficiency (i believe), extra attacks, and so on.
So a lower level cr creatures get bonuses for being classified as a sidekick?
Basically yeah
basically
Sidekicks is a way for a party or even single PC (player character) to have NPC (non-player character) allies come along with them, while being able to match them in level roughly, not overshadow them, and not be as weak as a wheat thin versus a nuclear missile.
Do I control the side kick? Or how does that work
For example, a Noble (CR 1/8) could be given sidekick classes, so that, if it was someone's backstory friend, they wouldn't immediately die to ten (10) damage as, say, a 5th level sidekick with a 5th level party
Because a dm controlling a character sounds a bit idk overpowered
anyone can control it, DM or players, it's a choice
It's a monster statblock with a few scarce extra traits, and more HP, basically.
Can a human sidekick be given gear, and say if it's a cavalier a different high cr mount??
it's a creature like any other
and there's nothing stopping the sidekick from being gifted a warhorse, either. Hell, you can even give a Warhorse sidekick levels!
dwarves and wolves are both medium
Hmm is gnome better then?
if you want, you can bend the rules to give a dire wolf sidekick levels (it's CR 1, but Large, and already has a bunch of extra HP on top, and has a nastier bite damage)
woops, I misread-
you could give a dire wolf mount for the Dwarf Sidekick yes
has like 37 hp and 10 average damage per its bite
This reminded me to make my player's horses have sidekick levels so they don't instantly die the moment a monster sneezes at them
hi can anybody give me tips for starting dnd
its been a interest for a long while but I never knew how to properly get into it
Well like with many games, it helps to give the rules a skim - check the pinned messages in this channel for links to the free basic rules and other useful resources to help get you started.
And welcome!
alright! and thank you!
Hello everyone! I hope this is the right place to ask this.
In the last few months, my partner and I have started to develop an interest in all things DnD, partly because she started to watch Critical Role (as have I now) and also because of us diving our heads into Baldur’s Gate 3. Now, we would like to take it a step further and try to play DnD; however, we don’t know where to start, and I wanted to ask for some advice regarding the essentials and maybe useful resources for beginners.
Also, there’s a cavest: due to our current schedules, we would like to start by playing only with each other. I have already done some research and my bare bones understanding is that two player DnD is possible but it requires some understanding of the game, as well as one of us being the dm (something I’d be willing to learn anyways, since I really like story telling). What would be the best way we could go about this?
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!
Hello! The style of game you're asking for is a "Duet." There are a lot of published adventures made in that style, but yeah it would require one of you to play as the DM.
The game is generally designed having at least three players and a DM, so you may run in to some wonkiness as time goes on, but it can definitely be done.
Important to note there's a lot of creative liberties BG3 undertook that are not base rules in DND - although you can rule them back in, it's fair to say modifying the game can inadvertently break it, if you don't know how important each strut you're modding is before the entire thing falls down.
Thanks a lot! I definitely understand that it is a “format”, so to speak, outside of the original design and that might be difficult to execute properly, but knowing that it is possible is definitely encouraging (thing is, if we enjoy do enjoy the game as a duet thing, we’d eventually like for a proper group but due to time constraints it’s the best we can try at the moment)
For sure, I mean, from watching some gameplay it’s definitely clear that BG3 adapted many things from the original game and I would be very interested in, first of all, learning the rules of the game before trying to go for it, but thanks a lot for the insight!
To coincide with reading over the rules, you might wanna check out this site: https://dndduet.com/
Tons of info about the style of play you're looking to try!
Hey All, not really sure if this is the right place to post, but i'm interested in getting into dnd, i've had a read of the basics and watched the odd video. Is looking for a beginner group the next realistic step to take and how easy is it to find one, generally speaking?
Sure - find a group and start playing! Most groups are generally fine with new to D&D players if they show they're putting in the work to learn and if they fit the group's general vibe.

Yeah I had a scan, there's a lot of homebrew things, i'm guessing i probably want to stick to core game for the time being?
Not a bad idea. Look for ones advertising specific modules. Mines of Phandelver is a common starting point, I believe.
I just had my first session of the campaign!!!
I singlehandedly stopped a tpk
Because of my subclass
#tales-from-the-table and let everyone bask in your achievement
i did a little silly moment and accidently infected 3 of us with mind flayer tadpoles last session
☹️
I just skimmied through it during an “active break” at work lol and it looks amazing! Thanks a lot, really!
Sent it, It not fully formatted but I'm so excited
I had no idea giants had such good wisdom
Had a read sound like you did well, did you heal the paladin and then stun the giant all on the same turn?
Yeah. Healing word is a bonus action isn't it?
It is.
So is rolling on your spirit bard table then it’s an action to use it. Don’t worry we’ve all used stuff wrong at one point but sounds like you had a great first session with many more to come
No? I already had that spirit rolled
Before the fight
That’s a good one to roll
Does alignment come into play much in D&D games? It sounds like it might become preachy
Not outside of specific spells. And it's less what you should do, and more what you actually do.
Very, very few DMs I've interacted with actually care about alignment
Oh good
It’s too simplistic
My Warlock icon keeps appearing and disappearing in chat
I see it as more a general idea of how one should behave, but not have to
Like a chaotic evil person ain't gonna give charitable help
Unless it directly benefits them
I see it as more a general idea of how one does behave.
Intent more than behavior imo
It's there upon character creation so I interpret it as how you are intending this characters morals to (at the start) be based around
I got chaotic evil from idrlabs not long ago. Wondering if that is somehow going to cause issue as it sometimes does
I think it’s kind of difficult to make so many characters so I tend to focus on my own decision making
Different backstory but yeah
Understandable
I mean you don't have to play your alignment
It's your character
Fairs
What does the chaotic part even mean
Disregard for law and order, a rebellious nature, an anti-authoritarian attitude.
chaotic is whatever floats your boat at the moment
Yeah, spontaneous
I can't type in looking for players am I missing a role?
you prefer to let your feeligns and emotions guide you
Must be a shoddy quiz or something. Only 24 questions
Chaotic from what I understand is like "I will do the shit you want me to sure I will just do it in a way you hate"
thats specifically LE or CE
To me, chaotic is going from your own feelings, with no set or rules stopping you
Oooooooh
actually CE is not doing it at all
No one can type in that channel. Read through the instructions in #find-a-game, and the bot will post in the proper channel you select.
the way i see it if lawful is doing things by the book, chaotic is using out-of-the-box thinking
^
so you may have the same goals, but your approach differs
in that way also prevent people playing chaotic as "lol so random" type of character
I try and avoid something that would feel cartoonish as it's against my interest in immersion
I take other quizzes and it can become CG or CN or CE but it keeps the C ig
did you do that quiz in character or as your own self?
Sure derails the original premise
I tend to fuse into my characters, it's some form of method acting and role model projection
nice
i heard a tips of doing that sort of quizzes in character, help you get into the PCs mindset
havent tried it myself but that sounds cool
I think some people would call it delusional so I may not mention it often
I like it though
FYI, D&D Beyond has 40% off in some sourcebooks right now (PHB, DMG and MM), in case any newcomer was waiting for a sale to get a hold of any of them
Oh! Also I saw Amazon is doing that as well for physical copies!
What does « +5 to hit » mean on a monster card ?
Does it mean I’ve got to add 5 on 1d20 roll ? And see if it hits a PC ?
Yes
That is the attack bonus. When you roll to hit, add 5 to the D20roll
Damn … but that’s wicked 😅
you compare the result to the target’s AC, just like for players
Thanks guys
Wicked cool awesome good
Sounds too much but I guess that’s balanced… I’ll see by playing 😉
Really ? With their weapons ?
True that
Yeah thats the common starting point for a weapon a player is proficient in, as described above
Does anyone have a DnD beyond campaign to join? I am new to DnD and want to learn to play!
have you checked out our #looking-for-players channel yet? if you want to try and find a DM to play with check out #find-a-game for information on how to create a post in the #750812887697588356 channel!
thx
The game is balanced around it dw
Good luck and have fun
Unless I’m mistaken, y’all have text based RPs here too? I haven’t seen that stuff in years. Lol. I sort of miss it. It was actually helpful in helping me write a bit better. 😅
We don't actually run games here now (too many bad actors in the community and a major pain to moderate).
Well other than some special cases
But yeah, no official D&D games actually ran here. But you can use our LFG channels to find a group or game. See #find-a-game for more information.
I actually used that a few days ago. ^-^ Putting together a group for a MtG based campaign. No luck so far, but we will see.
does increased size do anything?
not really for PCs
for monsters, it usually increases their damage (or in creation, their health)
Hi, my friends running a dnd campaign and i am trying to make a cleric character using online tools, it only shows life domain but im sure there should be other options for subclasses, is this actualy a payed feature to use other subclasses on DnDbeyond?
yeah, unfortunately
for every size category you get over medium the weight you can push, drag, lift and carry doubles. Mechanically speaking if you find a way to make yourself bigger, your DM will likely make Strength (Athletics) checks easier for you
you have to buy the subclasses all over again
is there a free builder that has subclasses lol
no
No, as that would be piracy of copyrighted materials
Correct. On D&D Beyond, you have access to 1 subclass option for each class (minus artificer) for free, because that is what is available in the public SRD (System Reference Document). All other subclasses, and the artificer class, are available after purchasing the associated books (or the individual subclasses) in the marketplace.
You could however use a pdf character sheet where you can use any materials you have access to
print out a character sheet and either borrow the sourcebooks from someone else at your table. Alternatively some gamestores let groups borrow books to use at the store like a library, that would give you a much lower cost entry into making a character too
when u say i have access too im unsure what that means, i plan on writing it out on a hcaracter sheet but thought it would be useful to use a online creator to design it easier
why do i need to spend money to make a character or buy books im not realy understanding why thats neccesary
They are assuming you or a friend would own the books in real life.
, , , the character stuff is in the books. . .
you dont need to spend money, the basic rules are free
But WOTC is a company, and they want your money so... yeah
Discussion about and promoting pirated materials is against server rules. Thus I am going to clean up this discussion.
🧹
Good cleanup 👍
Thanks anoth
thenk you
Looking to surprise my friend by learning how to D&D cuz he loves it, so I've read/heard/know how D&D works in the basics. But I have no idea how everything around it works, I really wanna try having my first D&D session. If people do this online here or through voicechats, please DM me :))

How to start off a session or like make that first session happen
and some important stuff to know would be nice
@civic lodge schedule is important make sure you iron that out before setting up a game
Make a character. I'd just tell your friend you're interested and he'll talk for hours about it and help you.
If you were planning on DMing for your friend, there’s probably a ton of short and long campaign ideas that people have designed that you can use. Official and unofficial ones. They’re called “modules”. Even if you don’t want to use one exactly, they could still help you figure out how to design your own adventure
If I’m a dragon born, do I do my name, then my clan or my clan them my name
Like, how do I name myself?
Just do what you want - there isn't an official lore you have to follow
In any manner you like
How do I get like a last name and like a title?
Like I know, it’s up to me, but how do I think of something that’s unique you know
I got a name it’s kriv
I think most of us just use Fantasy Name Generator .com
Either that, or just mash some syllables together
Do Dragonborn’s have a religion/faith was it just whatever you would like it to be and if so, is there made up faiths in religions in DND
this is more, stuff you'd talk with your DM about, with the world they're running
Ok
As a DM, I’m weird. Most DMs I’ve run into are weird about size. Me? If my player decides to play a Fairy or a Centaur or something, I make it very clear that it comes with both pros and cons. 😅
As a dragon born, did you age like human? What does age like a dog will set an amount of human years is twice amount of that many years
I’m just trying to do some minor details with my character
Treat it roughly equivelant to humans unless your DM has other lore or reasons to treat it differently.
There should be some official (or semi-official, correct me if I'm wrong) guides to most races ageing systems, including dragonborns. But from what I remember, they're quite similar to humans with ageing.
But they mature at 15, are as developed as a 10 year old human at 3, and are walking at a few hours old
They live about the same time period tho
This isn't totally true, there are tables of hundreds of dragonborn names, and clan names too
These are official (Xanathar's)
They give you a pretty good idea of the orthography of Dragonborn, which you can use to construct your own names
For example, blibdoolpoolp wouldn't be a Dragonborn name
This is (mostly) correct - in the PHB, here's the info on Dragonborn @meager dust:
Young dragonborn grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. They live to be around 80.
How doom hold heat but preach non violence
Your DM may choose to ignore this lore, or create their own, but this is the official lore from the Player's Handbook
I want to play D&D like, tonight. What's the best way or method to find a pickup group? I looked in the looking for players and looking for DMs channels and they are all scheduled out of my time frames.
sadness
Maybe check #looking-for-community - there's other D&D servers with games that may be running now or on a frequent basis.
was hoping to get lucky and find one starting soonish that i could jump in
DnD is not intended to be a “pick up” game
Its not easy to find 3-5 other people willing to commit to something for 4ish hours, especially when that thing takes hours of prep time by one of the members. Even with one shots that can easily add or drop players, The DM will still try to balance combat around the number of people in their party, so adding or subtracting someone still takes quite a bit of work
This. DnD is meant for finding a group and sticking with it long term
typically, yeah
Gotcha. I know, and I wanna, but my life schedule is just like, a maze
and im not the minotaur

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

@quasi kayak see above. Might work for you
thank you, checking it out shortly. Also, am I missing something? Did they remove elvish from 5e? or is it just commonly spoken now or something? i dont see it on the drop down
It’s a common language
Elvish is still a language option in 5e. If you don't see it in the dropdown, that usually is because your character already speaks it. Are you playing as an elf?
human
Then it should be there
Check your character sheet. Like I said, you probably already speak it, if you don't see it listed
you were right. i guess humans can just speak elvish by default now cause its on my sheet, even though i never specified it as a feat or trait of mine
would you mind linking your character sheet here so I can check?
Most likely, you took it somewhere else without realizing it. Humans do not get to speak elvish for free
ok, yeah. As I suspected. Humans get to speak 1 language in addition to common for free. This can be any language of their choice. You chose Elvish for this
i must have overlooked it in the creator
is there a place i can go to so i can like play a short campaign with other new players? but prefferably a more experienced dm to answer questions
You might struggle to find one specifically with just new players, but you can have a look in #looking-for-players
I would suggest googling for Adventurers League events near you
They usually run one-shot/short campaigns that are open to anybody interested dropping in
My local group uses meetup.com to organise, but those near you might use facebook groups or something else

hi! im interested in playing a DnD. but i want to try something shorter first. i don't want to waste anyone's time. maybe an online game without a real DM. is there any place where i can find that?
Closest thing I can think of, there's an introductory demo you can find linked in the pins of this channels
One-shots are very short, but have a DM, so not exactly what you're asking, but not a long term commitment
And DMs doing one-shots with brand new players probably won't be judgmental, so you can just try playing
How long does someone usually have to wait before they get a response when looking for a DM?
It varies tbh based on what you asked for, timezone, availability and anything else.
I mean I'm looking for like two players for a one shot tonight
Me and my friends do an arena player v everything everyone every now and the.
Hello everyone,Im a real newbie in DnD,like i dont know how to do anything but i just think its cool and i'd like to learn,i'll try my best to not disrupt anyone

I'm writing my dnd character, he's a taxabi rogue who's in deep debt to his countries form of IRS, thus he left his country to go to the sword coast, he then became a rogue due to his extreme financial issues, and has developed alcoholism through the stress. Do you think a dm would accept this back story, and if so is it a level of obnoxious? I couldn't really come up with anything else
it sounds cool
Think so? I just thought it was kind of funny to make dnd into a beurrocratic world with taxes
what would the word equivalent of pyromancy be to a druid like uhhh
"you go to a magic school to learn pyromancy"
"you go to a magic school to learn (druid word)"
idk what its called
School for a wildfire druid?
no like im writing a backstory and im trying to find a specific word
like what is the druid equivalent to pyromancy
I think there isn't really one
sadge
It's like cleric domains, there's no Latin to be found
Just "x cleric", "x druid". You could always just say your druid is a pyromancer though
Maybe shamanism? Depends on how you present the Druid’s powers
Druidism is likely the response.
Things like 'pyromancy' and any new X-mancy words are often made up for modern media. -mancy is actually more divination, but now days we use it to mean 'control', thanks to the popularity of necromancers in games being people who control undead rather than divine through communication with undead.
Schools of magic like that in D&D (Divination, Abjuration, Evocation) is for wizards.
Sorcerers, paladins, rangers, so on wouldn't classify their magic as such.
At most there is a distinction between 'Arcane' magic (Magic gained through mystical means like Warlock, Sorcerer and Wizard so on) and 'Divine' magic (Magic gained through connecting to a higher power, either through belief or praxy, like druids, clerics, rangers so on).
since when is schools of magic specifically for wizards
As in they are the ones who specialise in a school.
Spells can have schools but you don't say 'I'm an evocation druid'
Only wizards focus on specific schools, but other classes still have schools of magic they cast
Wizards are the ones who specialise and classify themselves by schools such as 'I'm an evoker' or 'necromancer' so on.
Death domain cleric references a specific school
But still not a necromancy cleric. Death domain cleric (or grave cleric). I'm talking more about the terms here.
Just bc a specific term isn’t used doesn’t mean they have no association with a specific school
In D&D there is schools of magic for spells, and you can classify magic as 'divine' or 'arcane', but aside from wizards, spellcasters don't tend to define themselves by a school of magic.
But I think this is getting beyond 'newcomer' now
They don’t define themselves by it, but they may still specialise in it
Agreed
Isn't a druid being a pyromaniac like an oxymoron?
Defends on how strictly you define Pyromaniac I suppose
I'm still new but aren't druids supposed to be protecters of nature and life? A pyromaniac likes to set fire to that stuff right??
Wildfire is a circle of Druids.
And generally fire is not antithetical to the flourishing of nature and life.
I mean pyromancy is like an absurdly strong feeling to set fire to things though
Fire allows life to survive by creating warmth, controlled burns allow for prevention of larger more destructive wildfires by keeping the environment relatively clear, which in turn supports the flourishing new life.
But I didn't know that, Im gonna read up on it
And Pyromania is not Pyromancy.
Pyromania is a psychological condition, Pyromancy is magic that focuses on the creation and manipulation of Fire.
The only thing they have in common is the latin prefix "Pyro" meaning Fire.
sorry *Greek prefix
Ohhh lol I miss read I thought he said pyromaniac, my bad
I think in this case as well it's less wanting the name for a druid that specialises in pyromancy (wildfire druid being the closest) and more 'What is the term for druidic magic' the same way pyromancy is a term for 'fire magic'. In which case I still would say the answer is simply 'Druidism' or even 'druidic magic'.
Hey folks let’s get back to the channels purpose of answering new to D&D folks questions.
That was pretty on topic
I think the answer is now 'this is beyond newcomer level'? >.> Maybe we should take it to #dnd-discussion
Alright, ig.
My bad
The topic is answering D&D rules/core D&D concepts for new to D&D folks.
Could anyone here explain to me the proper difference between Chaotic Good and Neutral Good? I'm planning on making a very folk-hero, chill fighter dude that's all about helping out the little guys etc and I'm thinking of making him NG. I'm not sure what the distinction between CG/NG is though, besides CG being more radical thinking, Robin Hood-like.
In some ways it doesn't really matter so long as you have a good idea of how they'll act. Alignments are guidelines and you don't have to stick to them strictly.
But in general chaotic individuals do tend to be more radical. Decisions are more subjective and based on their current logic at the time, and they don't react well to authority telling them what to do. Individual over society values.
A neutral person might still respect the law and authority, up until it begins interferring with their own values. They'll try to balance the needs of individuals and the needs of society more. But they're not so lawful as to respect and follow the law of society wholely.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Alignment
Here gives a very brief summary of the alignments you could have
Chaotic Good. (CG) creatures act as their conscience directs, with little regard for what others expect. Copper dragons and unicorns are typically chaotic good.
**Neutral Good. **(NG) folk do the best they can to help others according to their needs. Many celestials are neutral good.
This was quite helpful, much appreciated! 🤠👍 I think I'll go with Neutral Good then, it seems to fit what I'm going for best
Remember that alignment isn't fixed and locked (good people can have bad days).
Alignment doesn't definte your character but the other way around. Concentrate more on your character's Ideals, Bonds, Flaws, and personality.
For Helping people for advantage in Combat does it apply for all attack rolls for their turn?
It was already said, but in different words: don't build your character from that narrow standpoint up, build your character and the way you want it, and play it the way you want, and maybe it fits in that category, maybe not. Just build a character you enjoy playing
I appreciate the advice and don't worry, I'm definitely focused on making a fun character as priority number one. Just wanted to know what to classify them as 🙂
Attack rolls are not ability checks as far as I know
I thought help works on attack rolls?
There’s two ways to use it
That's my bad
Do you mean using it to distract an enemy, or directly assist an ally?
Mostly distract
“You can lend your aid to another creature in the completion of a task. When you take the Help action, the creature you aid gains advantage on the next ability check it makes to perform the task you are helping with, provided that it makes the check before the start of your next turn.
Alternatively, you can aid a friendly creature in attacking a creature within 5 feet of you. You feint, distract the target, or in some other way team up to make your ally’s attack more effective. If your ally attacks the target before your next turn, the first attack roll is made with advantage.”
I get that, just seems restricting to try to fit in that box, real people and characters flow into other boxes depending on the situation, don't try to always be in one box, it's not authentic
If you’re using the second option, the person you help has advantage on the first attack they make against the distracted enemy before the start of your next turn
That can be your baseline, I totally get that, just don't unnaturally try to stay in the box
Do you have a D20?
Read the guide
i have one online💀
You're good to go
thats it?
Oh, sorry, do you have an imagination?
yes

Hello!
howdy
I'm writing my first character backstory, can anyone read over it and give tips?
It's not long at all don't worry about that
You can share it in #character-discussion if you’d like some feedback.
Thanks
I have a dumb Idea and I need to be told if its a dumb idea
ok so, world I'm making, (well, its the purgatory of the world) but in this purgatory, all weapons are pretty much useless, while random items that sort of match the weapon are that weapon-
Like, a mace will become a mop, and vice versa, ladders are great swords, wands are feather dusters, etc, etc.
#dm-world-building would be more appropriate, but it seems like a cool idea, if a bit gimmicky
Wht do you do with component pouches? Like with a wand or a staff you point with it, what do you do with a component pouch?
Wear it on a belt, and grab components from it
So like with summon aberration for example you hold the pickled tentacle then what where does the spell come from
Up to you to flavour
can a 6th level moon druid turn into an intellect devourer
Intellect devourer’s aren’t beasts, so no
ah ok thanks
Can you play as a firenewt??
You could play Custom Lineage, which can be anything you like (see the specific rules on this, it has mechanical limitations)
You could also reskin (reflavour is the word we use in D&D) a Tiefling, Dragonborn, or other fire-based race
What book is custom lineage in??
It's in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (read the mechanical limitations first)
It lets you take a feat as your main racial feature
Elemental Adept: Fire might be appropriate
Okay thank you, my girlfriend thibks they're cute and wants to be one hahahaha
I saw something on unearthed arcana it's a race, what is that?
Unearthed arcana isn't official content
You'd probably get better gameplay from reskinning a fire-based race
Hmm okay thank you!
What is the default timezone in #find-a-game ?
There isn't one
though most players here will be in US time zones if thats what you are asking for
The form does advise people to share their timezone and even includes a link to a tool to help with that
would a half-orc monk work? i like the idea of monk bc punching and kicking is cool and half-orc seems cooler
also what do i need to know getting into this
Any Class and Race combination works :)

depends on what you mean by 'works'. 5e isn't crazy difficult so you'd really have to consciously try to make a character too bad to 'work'
@olive temple this would be better suited to #character-discussion

Thanks for the reply earlier, i'm from europe so i think i will have a hard time finding a team 😅
yall im preparing to play a wizard and im a lil lost with spells per level
my campaign begins at level four, but i cant seem to find a straight answer on how many spells i have at level 4?
12
i can find the amount of slots, but not the amount of spells i can take
6 at level 1
+2 for level 2
+2 for level 3
+2 for level 4
It's in the section on spellcasting
great! tysm
Spellbook
At 1st level, you have a spellbook containing six 1st-level wizard spells of your choice. Your spellbook is the repository of the wizard spells you know, except your cantrips, which are fixed in your mind.
Learning Spells of 1st Level and Higher
Each time you gain a wizard level, you can add two wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook for free. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the Wizard table. On your adventures, you might find other spells that you can add to your spellbook (see the “Your Spellbook” sidebar).
I can embarrassingly say, I have never never played d n d before
That's not embarrasing, literally billions of people haven't

I suppose you que right

quick question am i supposed to leave the attacks and spellcasting area on the character sheet empty?
Most likely yes but that’s all up to your dm if he wants you to add or not if your making your character off the original DND e5 way
Very new haven't played in well over a decade lol
Depends on what class you are playing. If you have spells, they will go in the spellcasting area.
The Attacks area is for any weapon attacks you have, but you can really put whatever you want to have easy reference to there

If its been well over a decade, then that was before the current version of the game (5e) was release. You can find a link the the current basic rules linked in the bot post above
how would a belt of giant strength work with druids wild shape?
PC physical stats are replaced by the beast’s stats, so it wouldn’t have any effect.
wouldnt the beast still be wearing the belt, cause "You choose whether your equipment falls to the ground in your space, merges into your new form, or is worn by it. Worn equipment functions as normal"
The belt itself is what gives you the new stats, so your wildshape form would need to wear the belt to gain its benefit. Its important to note that your equipment does NOT change size or shape to fit the new form. You can only wear it if the animal could actually wear that item
This sounds like a good topic to check in #dnd-rules
So a monkey could probably wear it, bit a spider or an elephant could not
Was just typing the redirect.

What does the fraction mean for range? e.g. pistol has 60/240 range
Normal / Long ranges
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#WeaponProperties
Range. A weapon that can be used to make a ranged attack has a range shown in parentheses after the ammunition or thrown property. The range lists two numbers. The first is the weapon's normal range in feet, and the second indicates the weapon's long range. When attacking a target beyond normal range, you have disadvantage on the attack roll. You can't attack a target beyond the weapon's long range.
;-; I think I'll play by post...? So can someone explain to me how that works or how that is played?
It’s like sending email messages or forum posts back and forth.
DM will typically set the scene via email/post then ask the players to respond by date/time. And so on.
Ah i see
Hey all, very new to DnD. I've read through the PH and had a quick question.
I can't post to find a dm for that.
Because i got two days left
hihi!!
i’m also pretty new 😿
I signed up for a DDAL session next Friday and was curious if there's any difference in creating a character for AL from regular I guess?
Ohhhh. Thank you
The folks over in #adventurers-league should be able to help you on that score!
Hi…. Kinda new to dnd in well…. General but i thought it would be fun to try out
As soon as I typed that I looked and saw the other channel lol
im making a race where its a living garden gnome and i want to make a trait that allows healing things to work on you
like medecine and spells and stuff like that
but like since you're still a garden gnome you dont need to breathe so stuff like poisonous gas doesnt work
and i dont know what i would name that
ive been thinking abt it for like 30 mins
Look at autognome.
I have been thinking of doing a dnd properly but I been playing DND with my friends and I was experimenting with it
lmaoo i didnt even know of this
How good is your memory
i went with whatever sounded the coolest
i went with cleric because gods can lend you their power if your characters morals align with the god that you chose
Erm, my muscle memory is average
Memory, not muscle memory.
Well playing a caster at all requires you to have a decent memory. Cause you can have effects going for ten rounds of combat+
I know controlling three enemy spellcasters was not fun. I did that once, not easy.
So, you’re telling me. That if I use a spell caster. It’ll be hard to use due to the remembering of spells?
Some spells have a lingering effect over rounds.
Some are easier to remember cause you can cast another spell and still use that spell
Action and Bonus Action
Spiritual weapon is an easy one to remember is there.
It can be moved and used to attack with a bonus action.
How interesting
At level six I was able to pump out upto 40 damage a turn using guiding bolt and spiritual weapon.
Cause spiritual weapon lasts 10 rounds of combat
True
But there is always one thing I forgot about with that combo
Guiding bolt gives the next hit advantage.
I did play with my friends doing a mock adventure
I actually never could remember that one.
Do you have somone teaching you? Are you willing to read/watch through a variety if materials multille times? If either are true, you can lesrn any class. If you’re not good about reading through rules, then a martial class (rogue, fighter, barbarian) would be easiest as they have the fewest mechanics to deal with. Wizard would be one of the toughest classes, in my view, but that’s not to say you can’t play it. You just might find it tricky is all.
I played a blind wizard once, good time.
I already read half of the fighter
I’m just done a mock adventure with my friends
To help me get good
And see if I made any mistakes
Basically learning the basics
But I did came up with a wizard character
how?
I think i can join to a campaign soon. Just reading the rules atm
Familiar
If you need any help with sheet things before hand, ill help out. I used to be a teacher for people.
The game needs your inspiration so you can play right. So, it can be from movies or tv show. And write it in your mind. Hmmm. This really is taxing for me because I have to create a backstory.
A good basis is 2-4 paragraphs, that includes a goal, a place, and a couple npcs the dm can use.
doesnt gotta be that complex. my players barely give me 6 sentences.
lol, it seems even of creating a story. It will take a few hours. It just have to make sense
Im not the greatest at writing, I actually need help with a backstory for a cahracter.
You do get a skill boost if you add more to the backstory right?
Hmm, good point.
backgrounds give you a choice of some skills, its different per background
Backgrounds help to give your character some connection to the world/setting/game your character is playing in.
Hmm, and that’s what’s troubling what if the dm home brew the game?
I think i got the character set but unsure
Dm me the sheet? Ill take a look, and let you know if I see anything off.
then ask them about the world
You can work with the DM and group to figure these things out. But for now, stick with what's official. You can always tweak it later.
hi !!! im not sure if this is the right chat to ask but im still very new to dnd and want to make my first character a tiefling !!
but a lot of my friends (who are also new to dnd) are telling me i shouldnt because theyre too difficult to play as so i wanna ask if i should settle for another race thats easier for beginners to dnd ?
Pick what sounds fun for you and fits the D&D game you and your group are going to play.
ahh alrighty thank you !! im going to dm for my group so im not sure if i’ll be able to include my lil guy in our game
Ah yeah usually the DM doesn't get a player character, but on the other hand you get to play all the other NPC characters in the game 😏
But can always have your character show up somewhere~
The DM instead gets to play the NPCs and monsters! It's just a different way to play D&D.
woo okay yeah!!! im really excited for that!! im following the essentials kit since we’re all beginning our journey into dnd!! so im slowly figuring things out!!
Huzzah!
Best of luck, and dont forget to have fun 😎
Yeah focus on fun! It's a game after all!
thank you both sm with the help ahh!! i’ll be sure to be back for any questions or updates when we start playing!! (super duper excited
!!)
Also to go back for a moment on tieflings being "difficult", races dont really tend to be overly difficult than another, and for the tiefling I guess the most difficult part is them getting basically few free spells at certain levels, which might be what they were talking about, but even those are pretty simple ones, just gotta read 'em 😛
hi hi! sorry to interrupt but i have a really noobish question
when using point buy (chicken dinner website) does it include racials stats in the count? or does it just allocate and assume you will add racial stats after?
sorry for the noob question!
my stats seem a little weird for my level so i was wondering if i had to add the +2 and the +1 from race on top of chicken dinner 😂
Seems like on that site you can pick the race from a list
It doesn’t factor in racial bonuses. There’s a drop-down with Basic Rules races (and some extra ones) on the site, actually.
tysm! :D
No. Racial bonuses are applied after stat gen from whatver method u choose
I just started and My first charachter was an artificer. Got dm to kill off the articficer and let me play a barbarian. The subclass and spells were just a lot to keep track of. Any tips if I wanted to be a spell caster in the future?
have flash cards
for your spells. if not, maybe use DnDBeyond to keep track of spells
ok
thanks
It was slowing down the game a ton to look at the character sheet all the time
np
i made flashcards for my players myself, cuz the cleric always forgets his spells...
ok. My dm and all other players are new as well so thanks for the help.
Playing an artificer requires putting in time before the game
For any spellcaster you need to know your spell list, what each one does, and what is best for given situation
The artificer adds to that infusions to choose each day
if you play a battlesmith or use a homuculus you have another creature to control
and to plan your turn out
Some artificers use the full action econony: action, bonus action, reaction
If you arent prepared it is going to drag your table out
So its a class that you dont just pick up and play
What are good ways to find alternatives if you cant post finding the dm?
All casters require study although something like a cleric i could probably teach more easily bc you only need maybe 4 spells that are insanely good
If you are looking for a game, check your local game stores, colleges, libraries, and online places like facebook, meetup, craigslist, etc. dnd is played just about everywhere
sunday will be potentialy my first ever dnd game
Good luck
thanks
