No, there is not
Well... i mean if you only qualify for the two-weappn fighting bonus action... different class abilities or spells might let you chose to use a different bonus action on your turn.
But you'll still only have the one item interaction with action, and one bonus action per turn.
Certain abilities can grant you extra attacks, more actions, more ways to have a reaction mid-round... but there's technically only room for one bonus action per turn.
They were asking if you could get a second Bonus Action, not a second option to use the bonus action on. Like how Action Surge or Haste can grant you a second Action. But there are no game features that give you a second bonus action in the same turn.
is it possible at any point in a campaign to respec one subclass to another?
Probably depends on the DM
I am a level 1 rogue light foot dwarf, how is best to kill a bugbear?
With a bow
i know it breaks the idea of progression but i had the doubt of whether my character would lose his abilities on my main subclass for new ones in the one im running
but yeah i'll end up asking that to my DM
Sounds like a good side quest
I'm now i'm only have played one dnd game
What if the bugbear is in an enclosed cave…(I am a player in the lost mines of phandelver)
Then I’m not gonna answer cause that meta gaming and spoilers for that adventure
FUUU- ok I am gonna die
Don’t forget it’s a group game so your not on your own
Nah I am in a group, just wanted to see if I could cheese yno
Try not to cheese it may upset your DM
Your DM and other people at the table might not appreciate that mentality
...which is why I repeatedly said it was always just the one bonus action per turn...
There is some guy playing one of the most looked down upon cleric combo apparently? Some human species?
My mentality so far has been to skin alive goblins, so I have an idea how to distract the bugbear
Well that's gruesome...
In Tasha's Cauldron of everything, they added optional rules for this, actually:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/tcoe/character-options#ChangingYourSubclass
The TL; DR is, if your DM is ok with it, you can change it whenever it fits in the story. You might have to train to learn something new, or have a big story beat that suddenly changes your magic or your outlook on life, or whatever. The written advice is that this change should occur at a level where you would normally gain a subclass feature, but that its more important to make it fit in the story, and to make sure the player is having fun, than it is to stick to that rule too closely
If you want to obtain better numbers go to #optimization, but as a friendly advice, I can already tell you the combination you have is not among the most optimal.
yeah, i'm playing an psionic awakening githyanki that's currently a psi warrior, but the moment he has a big awakening i want him to lose his fighter power to double attack and become a psionic wizard
It is resourceful…..
so to let go of his weapons and become a wizard in some sense
Dex is pretty high, I am sure I’ll be fine
Good Luck.
Make sure you talk to your DM about this, because whether or not this optional rule is available is 100% up to them.
yeah i'm awaiting his response
i'm working on reworking psi wizard into a playable/balanced state thanks to people here and chatgpt to spec into that later, i want it to be as canon to the story as possible
There's no psionic wizard but there is a sorcerer and bard with those powers.
I'm working on making a homebrew version of UA's psi wizard
Check the rules about AI too.
i'm not publishing it elsewhere, im just consulting ideas from it
using chatGPT to make homebrew content is a very, very, very bad idea, but thats a discussion for a different channel
it is indeed very bad at it
i'm only consulting it for novel ideas i then work out to be balanced/original
there's pretty bad takes from my gpt chat but there's some novel ideas i can incorporate
though the highest authority in the end is my DM to allow that
It was trained on homebrew scraped from public places on the internet, which generally is pretty dire. Garbage in, Garbage Out
Ask first before working on the homebreww or you can play an official class instead, that brings less problems at the table.
Aberrant Mind (Psionic) Sorcerer is a great option.
Ohhhh that's why it's so familiar and all "1d4 turns"
yeah AI isn't good at DND
yeah, when i asked my DM he conceded on the fact that if I managed to make it a playable subclass by balancing it i would be able to play it
even though i have an extensive list of ideas, i'm really selective of what is going to enter the subclass
You can ask about balance issues at #homebrew
yeah sorry im getting offtopic
just to put this into context
I wanted to help you to find a place if you have any questions related to that, excuse me if I sound rude.
yeah, i'm aware, i have asked there before, don't worry it's just that this question went a bit offtopic so i won't drag it more
we can talk in that thread too

Is con for HP supposed to increase as you level up? Because with every level the con on my spread sheet goes up for calculating hp but it doesn’t affect the con modifier.
I thought HP is just hit die +con modifier. Is there supposed to be like an HP con modifier?
Your CON modifier gets added to your maximum HP each time you gain a level.
But the modifier itself can only increase if your CON score does.
How do I join a campaign?
Check #find-a-game
Ok thank you. I wonder why the spreadsheet i got has the weird calculation
Can you share a link to it?
HP increases with level
Each level you gain 1 hit die + con mod hp
Hello I am new here with no knowledge of dnd I need help on how to play it

just joined and been playing since ad&d advanced Dm'n past 2 years 5e
If you want to discuss about older editions then head on over to #dnd-elder-editions
Otherwise we teach new players about 5E in this channel.
It's one thing figuring out the rules + lore, but finding a group to play with feels daunting lol
Yeah it can be hard
I have a basic understanding of the game I bought the 5e starter pack and decided to play a one shot first before playing the first campaign. While playing the one shot I came across lots of errors and just had to make stuff up as I went. I’m gonna play another one shot soon and want to know the rules better. If you can help me pls dm me and I’ll further explain what I don’t understand I love mtg and love the concept of dnd and want to learn to play well.
You can ask abt what you don’t understand here
I want to get into dnd but I have no clue where to start
Have a read of the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
I have 💀
So I kind of get the concept but in the one shot I played u had to cross a moat and u were supposed to go across and roll to see if u fall through or not but instead the player tried to use rope and an arrow which they had to shoot through the wall and walk across. So one question I have is can the player do anything in dnd as long as they have the stuff to do it? (The player had enough rope and arrows)
Have you made a practice character?
Uh I tried
Entirely up to the dm. Personally, I would allow that, but the player would need to roll an attack roll to hook onto the wall, and an acrobatics check to walk across the rope
Which part did you struggle with?
If you need any more help dming feel free to ask in #dm-discussion
Ok
Also were you using dnd beyond?
Nah I kinda hate how limited it is
In the options for subclasses and stuff? Yeah, you have to buy the rest of them.
a pdf character sheet can work fine
Which part did you struggle with?
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

Can Weapons be destroyed or degrade ? Or can I type these in on my character sheet
There are no rules for weapon destruction/durability
Same for armor ?
Yep
Sweet ty so much
All objects have an AC and HP, and they are destroyed when their HP reaches 0. However, using a weapon or armor will not reduce its HP at all, and most spells or other AOE effects that can damage objects will almost always say "unless that object is being worn or carried" so in practice, items are almost never destroyed.
nice follow up thanks
@hoary sand good luck and have fun
@turbid ridge thanks, im preety new to dnd learning the ropes right now i have a character sheet and such prepared and bought a whole bunch of stuff haha, im guna be dming, but i have around 2 maybe 3 months to prepare 😄
Nice I love dming
Hello
Welcome!
hello!
During the game does the whole player group make decisions as one as the game goes and the only time turns get implemented are attacking right in which u role for iniciatitive to see who goes when correct?
Generally, yes.
Maybe some sort of sea creature that follows the ship around, scavenging bodies thrown overboard
Not really a question for this channel, ask in #dm-discussion or #dnd-discussion
This channel is to help new players learn the game.
yaho
am new to dnd, had my very first one shot a couple weeks ago but always lookin to learn more if possible
If you got any questions or want any opinions feel free to ask away
i like learning on the spot with others teaching me, hopefully looking for a game to try out and learn
i see there's a channel to find players so ill keep my eye on it
Excuse me
How do stats work? Like athletics, animal handling, insight etc
What do I put for those? : ))
Ty ty
Can I use the javelin of lightning if my dwarf barbarian is not proficient with it? My dm told me to get one uncommon magic item.
My main weapon is great axe
If you weren't proficient with javelins, you could still use it. You just wouldn't add your proficiency bonus to the ranged weapon attack in the last sentence of the first paragraph.
Thankfully however, as a barbarian, you are proficient with javelins.
@glass summit Thanks my character sheet must be wrong.
It could be right. Under your weapon proficiencies it should say "Martial Weapons". Javelins are considered martial weapons
As a barbarian you are generally safe in assuming that if you see a weapon, you know how to use it since martial/simple weapons covers every weapon
It does indeed
depends on character level and if you're proficient in the thing and other factors.
Those are skills, not stats
Stats are your strength, wisdom, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, and charisma
For skills, you fill in the box on the right of a skill with the modifier, and the dot on the left you tick if you’re proficient in that skill
All g
Each skill is associated with a specific stat
Hang on let me see if I can find the part of the basic rules that talks abt skills
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Skills here’s the basics of skills
Your modifier for a skill is based on the relevant stat for that skill. If you’re proficient in a skill, you also add your proficiency bonus to the modifier for that skill
Your proficiency bonus is based on your characters level
For example, if you had a +3 dexterity, were level 1, and had proficiency in stealth, you would have a +5 to stealth
get that expertise for a fat +7 at level 1.
Yeah, some things let you get expertise in skills, which means you add twice your proficiency bonus to it
@calm shore just making sure you don’t miss this
Oh ty ty lol
I did smtn else and forgot tysm💖
All g
I took a ss ty again : ))
Heyyy so im trying to fill out my character sheet for a new campaing i'm gonna start with some friends, usually i do it with them but they're unavailable for now and im in dire need of help :/
Help with what
So all i remembered was the dices roll to fill out like Strenght dex inteliggence etc, but im not sure what comes next
Follow the Basic Rules.
Ah. You’ll have to wait for someone else who can post a guide to the basic rules or whatever
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
oooh
If you’re rolling for stats though, make sure your dm is fine with it. Usually they like to watch you roll to make sure you aren’t sneaking a couple extra numbers in
Yes thats how we usually do it
Use the Point Buy or Standard Array system
yeah fair enough
They told me to just keep with rolling
I usually give my players a little bonus for being bold enough to roll for stats.
Having imperfect characters is where the funs at
i cam out with
16 Strenght
12 Dext
15 Constitution
10 Intelligence
10 Wisdom
15 Charisma
Im playing as a barbarian
yeah haha
Seems good, I personally would swap Dex and Cha tho
For some people
I was thinking about that too, as a barbarian i dont think i would need to be charismatic
Not unless you wanna be good at intimidation checks lol
yeah well... my friends will deal with that haha
could be funny tho
16 Str 15 Dex 15 Con 10 Int 12 Wis 10 Cha is my suggestion
why did you up wisdom
im guessing perception
Wisdom saves can be very bad
Wisdom is useful for many things. Perception and saving throws.
okok
fair enough, ill keep those numbers and talk with them once i know all the characters
thanks all of you
No problem. Come back when you wanna do something silly with multi classing and I’ll give you forbidden knowledge for a top tier high charisma sorcerian
hahaha for sure!
Is there some sort of prejudice in the dnd universe about tieflings?! I keep seeing things about ‘everyone hating tieflings’ or smt
It's being actively toned down in the lore, but due to their fiendish heritage, in some settings tieflings are treated with distrust and suspicion
But the key points are
- This is being reigned back in the games design
- This doesn't apply to all settings
I’ve never been able to like light armor, despite liking magic casting. Light armor tends to be some sort of loose drape or leather that doesn’t flatter as much. I associate them with vagabonds or bandits actually. Plate is always my favorite. Is there no good looking light armor? Why?
Depends on what you mean by armor. Is a fancy shirt and cool leather belts light armor, swashbuckler style?
What about a hauberk jazerant? That’s the kind of shirt that link would wear but is definitely still armor
Maybe? It’s not often I get those as rewards, certainly not traditional caster gear I believe or whatever
I googled that and I’d prefer the full plate
I think I’m just proud and think of light as peasant armor. And then except things like vampire lord aristocratic garb or nicely tailored wizard robes
Oh im sorry did you mean official armor from the handbook? Because if you did you could always multickass to gain access to medium or heavy armor. Or use mage armor
But like level 1 plate armor to me is already scratching the itch way more than some brown hood sack
I guess just in general how fantasy RPGs handle the categories, but in the context of DnD also is not inaccurate
The armour can look how ever you want it to look
I certainly feel the level 1 plate is way more expensive
Plate armour is meant to be expensive as it’s a big job to fit it to a person
Mechanically and logically it is. But nothings stopping you from getting a shirt made out of fine elven silk that costs 5000 gold or something
If you’re really interested in plate, there’s a few ways to get it on a caster for very little investment. Like a 1 level dip into fighter
Mm maybe that’s why. My brain really gravitates to higher social status displaying things. I feel I’m decreased in my world presence otherwise
I’m thinking of people like Gwyn from Dark Souls for example. Though he’s a god so it’s not comparable to a level 1 character
Hey
On the other hand you could say his gear sucked even for a level 1 character if you got it lol
Sup
Been a while but I feel that armor was much more important in dark souls 1.
Cheap in the sense that I don’t want to look cheap in a rp way. Though irl too actually
There’s also magical light armor that costs more
hi there, im new here and i'd like to get help thinking up of a new character to play.
I'm currently playing in a campaign: icewind dale rime of the frostmaiden, as a (lvl 8) goblin barbarian with ancestral guardian and echo knight.
Long story short is that my character is on the edge of death, and i need to prepare another character in case i do die.
My experience of d&d is rather limited which is why im wondering if anyone could give me any fun ideas of what to play.
for context, my party has a kobold artificer, goblin wizard, human pally, tiefling warlock.
in terms of what i want to play: im quite flexible. i like the concept of fun, unusual or unorthodox characters that can value add to the experience of everyone.
preferably one that can handle their own weight in battle (but isnt too hard to play mechanically)
i did think that playing a changeling could be fun but havent really thought of what else to do other than make a bard.
so any suggestions would be very welcome!
(And thanks for taking the time to read this!)
A bard would work well in your current party
Changeling bard honestly has some potential if you have a mainly martial party, especially since they can get proficiency in bard skills, leaving room for even different skill proficiencies.
And roleplay wise, that could be a potent combo, take the form of an npc, persuasion expertise, boom, you are now them, lmao.
Unless you roll badly that is.
Hi I'm new to DND, I've played before but with made up rules (for example I was a rogue with electric power that I could direct to the eyes to get inhuman reactions). Anyways I've been trying to learn to play but the rules seem to vast and hard and I don't wanna join a campaign in #looking-for-players cause I'm scared I ruin everyones experience by not knowing the rules.
So what would you like advice on exactly?
You might have to just jump into a game and learn from experience. I’d recommend playing a fighter or barbarians. 2 of the arguably simplest classes in the game by design. That way there’s as few things you can potentially get wrong and you can instead focus on learning the other rules without making too many mistakes. Let your dm know you’re new and it won’t be an issue at all
I’ve come across people who have been playing for years and don’t know any rules
Hmm okok, Ill try to go with some barbarians first and say that I'm new to the game, hopefully I'll learn fast to be able to go to sorvetes asap hehe
Tyy
The tips I wanted was mainly how to start playing without ruining everyone's game
Just be cordial and no one reasonable will have an issue. Write down your weapon’s damage(1d6+2for example). Your attacks hit bonus that you add to your attack rolls. Remember how many spaces you can move, your health, and just read over your character sheet or skills or book in between your turns in combat.
The trick is to narrow your scope as much as possible(let’s say, just try to remember what your character specifically can do at level 1, disregarding everything else) so that you don’t get overwhelmed
Okok tysm!
Barb main, can say they are pretty straight forward for new players. Bear Totem is iconic because it can tank pretty much anything. Unless it's a high level encounter or a really insane DM, you can shrug off a lot and just continue smacking things.
Don't let that scare you from playing a subclass you like more though, just figured I'd suggest the simplest barbarian class, lol.
Most games don’t mind you switching your character for something else if you don’t like it either. At least for the first few sessions
Also true, fighters are also pretty simple. Casters are more intimidating they are but I'd say that's lower mid to mid level of experience. Mostly because a lot of groups will be annoyed waiting for a caster to take 5 minutes deciding what spell to use, lmao.
Generally as a spellcaster, it's good etiquette to know your sheet, spells, and be ready to cast without too long when your turn comes up.
I am new to dnd and so far I found one offs. Single visit campaigns to be fun and I can change characters easily
Most seem to be willing to help me play
hi im new
Welcome!
thanks
@mighty vector You get one bonus action per turn that can only be taken when a game feature says you can take it
So for rogues Cunning Action, you can indeed use that once per turn
More accurate to say you can use your bonus action each turn for Cunning Action.
You only get one bonus action per turn, so if you use it for something else that turn, you wouldn’t be able to also use Cunning Action.
Hey I’m brand new, in D&D beyond I’m noticing legacy content in character creation screen, And the option to opt out of using it. Should I avoid using legacy content?
That's up to you and your DM
what's legacy content
If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d recommend leaving all those setting at their defaults.
I don’t have a DM yet, I’m just dabling in creation screen until I find one. Is it common for DMs to allow it?
Content that is "out of date" because a newer version has been printed.
ooh, thank ya thank ya
It really depends on the DM. Though in my personal experience, most either don't care one way or the other, or don't allow it.
Okay thank you 🙂
is it important to premake characters on dndbeyond for a game before you even get into one or does it not really matter (or a case by case basis)
I’d generally recommend coming up with a few loose ideas for characters to start.
Then when you find a DM, you can work together to pick the best fit for that campaign and add any final details.
gotcha
im mainly only interested in doing cleric stuff but ill try one out
In general, pre making characters is fine as long as you are aware they might have to change a lot in order to fit into a particular campaign. It's usually better to have general ideas instead of a fully made sheet though, so you can adjust easier to things like "there are no clerics in my world" or "I don't like using feats" if you had a human cleric for instance
If you come up with just one character — say, a dragon fighter — a DM might have a hard time fitting that character in if the campaign isn’t really about fighting dragons.
thats exactly what my character is that i drew before lol a human cleric for my first one shot
but yeah totally understandable
With clerics in particular, its important to work with your DM, because its very common for DMs to create their own gods or pantheons instead of, or on top of the existing 5e lore
noted, ill be sure to keep it in mind then
im pretty happy to adjust as needed with character concepts, so hopefully its not too bad
Is there any angel like races in DnD to play as? I found something but idk if it’s true or not

hi, new to dnd online, trying to get started by finding a game, any tips on how or where to find one?
?looking
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
?tag new online
These two links should help you out!
I made this guide to help folks in their search for groups/games: #third-party-tools-archive message
Hey all ^^
I'm new to dnd but I've been meaning to get into it for a while
Could anyone show me the ropes? xP
Welcome! There’s some handy links here to get you started.
But if you’ve got any specific questions, fire away!
I uh- I learn better being able to talk to someone rather than reading a wiki page ^^;;
That’s not a wiki page that’s the offical dnd website
Is there a lot of reading involved?
Some yes, lots of videos on YouTube to help explain them
It's a wiki page
You can find video explainers on YouTube. Some are linked above. But the odds aren't great of someone taking the time to explain the game to you one-on-one.
Would the Cleric thing apply to Warlocks as well?
Which cleric thing?
What a helpful and inclusive community
Collaborating with DM for the lore around extraplanar entities
Everyone in this channel is eager to help newcomers, but this server has thousands of members, so we can't offer 1-on-1 tutoring to everyone. You'll get a lot better results if you can ask specific questions like "how does an attack roll work?" or "What is dexterity used for?" instead of general questions like "how do I play D&D?" So, some base line investment is expected from the newcomer as well
Unfortunately, DnD requires a decent amount of reading. There's hundreds of new people hopping into the discord every day, so it's simply unrealistic to expect folks to take time to explain the rules directly to each person who needs help
yep theyd help you with stuff on your patron
All I want is to make some friends to rp with and be able to learn how in a way that doesn't make me want to cast a self destruct spell
In that case, yes, work with the DM to see how your concept can fit into the game as designed.
Absolutely! Reach out to your DM and make/pick the most fun Patrons imaginable!
Watching Crit Role, some DM videos and playing BG3 I feel like I understand the gist of how to play it
Maybe except for proficiencies
They seem to mean different things depending on what it is one is proficient in
Proficiencies basically just make you more likely to succeed at the things you’re good at.
The odd one out is armor proficiency.
Well it seems like for armor you need to be proficient to use it
And the higher level your character is, the more likely you are to succeed at those things
Ah yeah
(FWIW, they’re probably renaming that next year to Armor Training instead.)
Hell you wanna talk about how I learn best let's get a practice game going, I'll pick some stuff up quick with hands on
Do you have a local game store near you?
Cool. Try posting in #750812887697588356 following the instructions in #find-a-game
I should try a game online after being done with bg3
Learning, like playing, is a collaborative process
You have to bring something to the table as much as your fellow players and any DM
But I literally don't even know where to start
I would find it extremely offputting if someone showed up to my table having declined to read any materials and simply demanded that a table cater to them
I was told to ask more specific questions
best way to learn prolly find a short game, like a one shot, thats newbie friendly and ask the DM to help you out
But I don't even know what to ask
thats how i learned as well
Multple folks here, i’m sure have directed you to the free basic rules, but i will link them again

I find it offputting that a community as large as this can't help someone with a learning disability
You spend some time reading
Afterwards, others may spend some time clarifying tjem
Except all players can and should put in at least an attenpt to read some basic rules
Which are free and provided here to you
Many people here are happy to answer questions but no one is expected to cater just to one person , everyone here is basically a volunteer
There are videos linked if you struggle with text
The best places to start are to either read the basic rules, or watch a video explaining them
both of which are linked in the bot post above
Im telling you I've been through this with comp pokemon as well
Ive tried watching videos and reading forums but it all goes for naught
Ive done best having conversations with experienced people and battling firsthand
Idk if i should try signing up for three four campaigns and then after talking things setting it, cancel others... It should be simple and really helps on my end, in one go im def netting one campaign to chill in, but it feels weird to cancel after troubling a dm and almost confirming...
Hi all, i am new to this server!

A player should respect the time and effort that a DM puts into preparing a game. Do not sign up if you do not intend to play
Fair enough, ill talk one by one
Some people do run introductory one-shots, keep an eye out for them.
The big difference between D&D and pokemon is that a single game of D&D takes about 4 hours, give or take, so its very hard for someone to just casually jump into one to help you practice. And even if you do go into a game, the player does have a least some responsibility to know the basics. At the very least, you should know the character creation rules, since that is something you need to do before the game even starts. If you want a good place to start, that would be it.
Think of finding a good table as dating. Don't sign up for multiple tables only to cancel — it's rude to set up several dates at once and cancel on them. As a DM it really is upsetting that you spend work helping the players get ready only for them to ghost you.
Okay then is there like a character sheet?
yep
Character Sheets
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
on dnd beyond theres a character builder tool
Do I have to print it off
if youre playing online no need
Oh based
Maybe give D&D Beyond a try. It has a character builder to help you through the steps.
Link?
Thanks
How much you can carry.
Thought so
Don't worry about that.
"You cannot fast travel while overencumbered."
Use "standard array" for ability scores, leave HP on average, and select "starting equipment" when it comes to it.
Hello everyone. Just arrived
When you're making a new character worry more about the rest of the stuff. You're not going to be overloaded with just your starting gear.
Can in play online in d&d beyond?
D&D Beyond is just used for character sheets and digital books. Many DMs who are online use D&D Beyond. Ask the DM if they use it though.
So does race matter
tl;dr Yes but ask the DM.
There's a Chrome extension called Beyond20 that will share your dice rolls to a virtual tabletop like Roll20. It's the only way I play.
Is it like skyrim where certain ones get certain buffs
yep certain race gives you certain features which can be useful
Playable races give you racial abilities and skills.
pretty much exactly that, yeah
Hmmm
Read the Basic Rules.
Is there a furry

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Does that mean no furry
Read the Basic Rules.
Not to be offensive to the Read the Basic Rules. people but I don't think that's a furry
There are a few, but none are available for free with the basic rules. They were published in the expansion books
DND HAS DLC 😭
There's some classically furry-adjacent races, such as Tabaxi or Harengon. Many of them are relegated to supplemental books, however, which cost additional money
Tabaxi, dragonborn, aarakocra, probably more.
I'm trying to be polite to get you to read the Basic Rules because it's quite apparent you haven't and are just asking questions without knowing anything about the game.
Like lizard people, but not lizard folk. They're a different thing.
Skyrim is not D&D. It may have influences from D&D though.
Idk about the lore of any of this lizard people stuff but at face value you literally just said the same thing
It do be like that sometimes.
I know. I'm not a complete idiot.
I don't make assumptions.
Forgive me for having a sense of humor
You're assuming reading a bucket of word vomit is gonna work for me
Have a look at the Handbooker Helper videos linked above, that'll give you a starting point.
There have been many people before you who have only played RPGs via video games so their view of D&D is limited through other media.
D&D is a game of rules. Eventually you will need to read the rules.
Braille and text-to-speech exists.
Ah yes braile
My favorite smartphone feature
I love the lengths that these people are willing to go to avoid helping someone with a literal learning disability
Let's keep this to topic and stay civil, shall we?
People are usually happy to help but it often involves the other person having specific questions they need help with.
I was just asking if there was a furry race like the khajiit from skyrim and this guy keeps on me about reading something that's gonna go right over my head lmao
So you would like to know if there are any playable races that literally have fur, correct?
Yes
There are
Tabaxi are probably the closest to what you are looking for
That arent paid*
theres a legacy aarakocra
Then no, unfortunately.
Great. Tabaxi, Leonin and I'd say bugbears count as furred.
They can be purchased a la Carte but are not in the basic rules.
Fur or scales?
its a bird so fur?
Oh feathers forgot about those
Dragonborn have scales, if that counts for you
There’s an official rabbit race
and dragonborn are part of the free basic rules
My mind may be tainted from skyrim but arent dragonborn important?
Oh right! Thank you.
I totally blanked on haregons!
That could work
nah not really, all race equally important
Are haregons paid orr?
maybe in some campaign certain race is rarer than other but thats about it
Yes, unfortunately.
Damn
They would be, yes.
Tbh if dragonborn isn't some "main character" level race that could work
- actual importance may vary by campaign and scenario, always consult your DM before making assumptions and if they ever say "are you sure?" strongly consider backing off.
Different races have different importances on different planes too
Im just saying overall
Yeah, broadly your choice of race makes no difference to anyone but you.
Dragonborn sounds cool then
Dragonborn are not overly special in the game world. They are just dragon-like people
Exactly what I needed to know thank you
ahh i never had a game like that yet, at most some races have lower population but thats about it
ALRIGHT WHO DECIDED THE LIZARD PEOPLE DON'T GET TAILS 😭
like on one game im applying rn specifically said shapeshifter (reflavored changeling) is a rare race
Appearance is flavor. You want a tail, have a tail.
I mean the dndbeyond thing said dragonborn dont have tails
but if your DM allow it you can have a tail, its not gamebreaking anyway

Hohhhh boy that's more than I thought
my chicken aarakocra can fly cos screw logic
12 classes dude 😭
Okay um
What are all the magic ones
Cuz i see sorcerer which seems obvious
And wizard
Is that it?
What kind of things do you want to do? Most of them can cast spells, or learn to.
Full Magic:
Sorcerer
Wizard
Druid
Cleric
Artificer
Warlock
Bard
Half:
Ranger
Paladin
Bards, Sorcerer, Wizard, Warlock, Cleric, and Druid are "full casters"
Paladin and Ranger are "half casters"
Fighters and Rogues have a subclass that can allow them to cast spells too
The 'Primary Casters' are Sorcerer, Bard, Cleric, Warlock, Druid, and Wizard (in order of least to most compact)
I want ice magic >:3
Artificers are "3/4th" casters technically, but they are closest to half casters, not full casters. They max out at 5th level spell slots
Again, most magic classes can cast ice spells, so it’s more of “how do I get magic”
I vote dragonborn sorcerer.
Oh yeah
Each of the individual spellcasters have their own rules about how they get new spells, but all of them start off with a small handful of options that you choose at character creation
When you say Ice Weapons, what specifically are you asking for? Magic weapons that deal ice damage?
Pretty much yeah
Using ice magic to summon a sword or something
Yet hopeless with physical weapons 😔
I mean, there is a spell called ice knife
"WHY IS IT SO HEAVY--"
It's up to your DM's discretion to reward the players with whatever magical items they deem appropriate. That being said, there are a few spells which allow you to temporarily boost your weapon with ice damage later along the way
Yeah, but it's a grenade.
yes
Magic Items exist in the game, but they are only given out at the DM's digression. You don't get them when making your character. There are some spells that can create weapons, like Shadow Blade. You could reflavor that as Icy, instead of shadowy, if you wanted. But you can't change the damage type into cold damage. When you reflavor something, you can only change the appearance, not the mechanics. The shadowblade spell deals psychic damage
item does
"magic item" does not
What's that one that makes a sword? Warlock spell- ah, shadow blade.
That could work
Im more about the lore than the mechanics tbh
if you want a ice blade that you can weild without too much convincing of dm artificer who made one migght work
There are few weapon-summoning spells unfortunately
Hi Everyone
but also, some dms will let you have a "ice blade" that just has regular stats of swords as long as it fits in their world
I believe they are trying to make their character with SRD content only. It seems like they don't want to buy anything yet
Then when you ffind a campaign take it up with the dm, bc all dms are different
I def just use third party websites but yeah
shame on you
truly
I think the easiest way to create your character is to read through the spells available, then decide which ones of them to be around your character's main schtick. It's definitely simpler than deciding "ice sword" and then trying to find something that fits that description
There's plenty of ice magic available. As mentioned before, I think Sorcerer might be your best pick if you like elemental magic!
Though
I do have to ask
I'm probably wrong
But I would assume most classes could at least learn some basic spells from most categories right?
any of the classes I listed above
One way or another.
here
Not every class gets magic. But I do think its over half
some class can learn certain spells
What im saying is I want at least a few basic healing spells
but you can get spells through race/feats/some subclasses
Nothing insane
clerics have many of those
Healing spells are a little more class specific. Wizards and Sorcerers don't get any
Damn
Very few classes that have access to ice themed magic also have access to healing
but fighters get second wind!
Ooof
(almost a heal spell)
druid def can
WAIT WAIT DOESNT A DRUID GET A PET
Not by default, no
Aw
Rangers?
Idk lol
Not quite. If you're looking for a caster like that, druid is your best pick.
Rangers are a "half casting" class, which means they primarily fight with weapons. Traditionally a bow. They get a small amount of magic to support themselves, but its not their main way to fight
Ah
Sorcerers, Wizards, and Warlocks
Unfortunately, Shadow Blade is only available through the Xanathar's Guide to Everything supplement
Ah, forgot about that
DnD really got the EA business tactic
Got the mr krabs bill
Breathing
Existing
Standing
Lollygagging
Oh I'm sorry you wanna walk? That'll be 14.99 please
Its really not as bad as you make it sound. You have to remember, 5e is almost 10 years old. Of course there have been expansions since the initial release
Expansions yes of course
But locking away fundamental parts of the game is just
Weird
Do like the mmos and lock special items and gear behind paywalls not my freakin body type lmao
All the fundamental parts are free! You can play the game with the Basic Rules no problem for years
That'd be like if elves and beast races in skyrim were a dlc exclusive
Other RPGs do exist.
You have to remember, D&D is written as books. If they want to publish something new, they have to write a whole book, and sell it. There's no such thing as a "free update" or whatever
Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait
Don't tell me I'm gonna have to buy a freaking book to do discord roleplay
Nope, as stated before: the basic rules are free and all online
So why cant the new rules
Because game design is a job, and the designers need to eat and pay rent
Basically, capitalism, Dude. Anyway. There's plenty to get started with available free. See what you can do.
I wonder though
Are they gonna send the feds to my door
If I just say my character is a Haregon?
You'll have to take up reflavoring with your DM.
"Flavor is free" is probably the most common catchphrase in all of D&D
"Ask your DM" is probably more common.
I want a campaign
Then here, on the official Wizards of the Coast Dungeons and Dragons discord, our suggestion would be to purchase the Harengon supplements (chocolate ice cream) if you want to play it.
Shadow Blade isn't a great spell on many situations
The SRD content is really good.

I'm genuinely curious whats stopping me from just
Saying that I have chocolate ice cream
What's the dm gonna do
Check?
Yeh
This is not the place for this convo, let's jump to #dnd-discussion
you can say you have ice cream, but the dm gets to say whether it does anything
You don't understand
You don't technically need to own a book in order to use content from it. If you were playing in person, you can write whatever you want on your character sheet. If one of your friends has the book with the Haregon in it, you can borrow their book to use its mechanics. If you are playing online, sites like D&D Beyond allow content sharing, if someone in your campaign has a premium subscription. Or, you can use that site's homebrew tools to recreate the content, so long as you don't publish it for other people to use. The rule isn't "You must personally own this book in order to use content from it." But moreso "you don't get to know what's in this book for free, but if you know what's in the book, you can use it"
Ooh shizzle, big words
how do i use beyond20 in Roll20, i want to join a party for the first time but i dont know how to load the caracter i created in D&D Beyond to Roll20...
Ask in #third-party-tools-archive
Anyway um
i used Beyond20 extension
oh wait nvm you already have beyond20
Elemental main, basic healing
Whats my best bet?
Druid
Oke
ADOPTING ANIMAL FORMS THATS IT
Not a pet 😭
I got a bamboozled
Mannn I don't wanna be a wise priest
I wanna be stupid
Intelligence and wisdom are 2 different things
You don't have to be. I played a druid in a game who was a guy who wrestled with bears all his life. That's just flavor text, and you're welcome to work with your DM to design a druid with a different vibe
Intelligence is knowing tomato is a fruit
Wisdom is knowing you shouldn't put tomatoes in a fruit salad
sorry, its a common joke
intelligence: book smart, wisdom: street smart
I mean
To be fair he's probably more booksmart than streetsmart
Studies magic and all
Intelligence is your ability to know and recall lore, history, magical knowledge, etc.
Wisdom is your ability to understand people, observe your surroundings, and make intuitions
Oh so wisdom means you have a good gut
exactly
But so does constitution
I love it
Wait
Why is there an option to add another class
I can be multiple with one character??
Seems kinda busted
Yes, multiclassing exists
An Optional Rule
The short answer to that is: Yes, but don't.
Wait so then
Wait does multiclassing mean multitasking or is it like switching back and forth?
Can you change mid battle?
Multiclassing is an optional rule that is extremely complex, and often very difficult to optimize, especially concerning spellcasting characters
Ah
It's best to pretend it's not even there while you're getting started
Nvm then ill stick to druid
You just get all of the features of both classes. There is no "switching"
Summary is you get features from multiple classes but yeah
¯_(ツ)_/¯
hey
does anyone know how i can get into dnd as a brand new person? looking for an extra hobby away from academia as an outlet
ty xoxo
any guide welcome

Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
We have handheld scythes but not the real ones 😭
Arcana, Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Nature, Perception, Religion, Survival
A glaive is very good to reflavor as a scythe, however
What are these???
those are some skills. Skills are specific applications of your ability scores
Skills.
Ability checks can have up to two "parts" - what kind of ability check it is (out of the 6 abilities, strength, dex, etc)
And an ability check might use a skill.
So for example, if you made an Intelligence (Nature) check, you would make an Intelligence check (rolling a d20 and adding your Intelligence modifier), and if you are proficient in the Nature skill, you also add your proficiency bonus to the check's total.
For example, if you're walking through a dungeon and you ask your DM if it looks like there's any monsters around, the DM might ask you to roll a Perception or Survival check to see if you can spot anything. The better you are at those skills, the more likely you are to succeed at the check.
More specifically, a Wisdom (Perception) check.
Excuse me
I started my character sheet and I'd like to know if it looks good for a lvl 1 or if I did smtn wonky (wip btw)
If I'm able to can I send the sheet to someone who would like to help me? : ))
If you'd like help with your character sheet, you can post a link to it in #character-discussion
Ok! Ty tyy
Hey! Im new to DnD and want to try and learn a bit. If anyone has a campaign for me to join on DND beyond. That would be great!
Okay but what do the ones I listed do
Recall info about the planes of existence and their inhabitants, magic items, spells, eldritch lore
Show body language to animals such as calming down a horse or not angering something big and scary
Reading somethings intent or emotions, figuring out if they're speaking lies
Your ability to accurately assess medical states, and stabilize a dying creature
Recall info about plants and animals
Your ability to notice details and spot hidden things
Your knowledge of religious lore such as gods, fiends, celestials
Your ability to track creatures and otherwise wilderness survival

Btw Dnd Beyond is a digital library and character sheet tool. You dont play games “on”the app
I find dnd beyond a great tool to use
if im persuading someone, what am i rolling for
lioke im rolling persuasin against theyre what?
Against a DC the DM will set, persuasion isn’t mind control though
It may make some like you a bit more to deal with you
Doesn’t mean you can always persuade someone
means if anyone can, i will
In most cases the dm will have you do a persuasion check but 5/10 it’s a fail anyways if the dm sees it fit
im not gonna 'give me your kingdom', im gonna be like 'weve been walking for so long, can you lodge us for the night'
Again that part relies on the dm of the campaign
Cause the dm has to be willing for it but more importantly if it’s ok with him

So those are just modifiers right? I can still calm animals and detect lies just more reliant on a dice roll?
.
If your dm calls for an animal handling check for example, you can still make the check even if you aren’t proficient in animal handling
However if you are proficient in it, you get to add your proficiency bonus to the roll, as well as the relevant ability modifier
So I'm trying to post in #looking-for-players but it's not letting type anything, the #frequently-asked-questions and #rules channels aren't exactly clear on how I'm supposed to post there. Help?
When you have to make an Ability (Skill) check, you roll a d20 and add your relevant Ability modifier (such as Wisdom, whether it's -1, 0, +1 or higher, whatever). If you are proficient in a skill this ability check allows, you also add your proficiency bonus to the roll.
You can make checks, just that in some contexts and for some intents, being proficient in a certain/relevant Skill makes you a little more likely to succeed.
If you take the sharpshooter feat as an Assasin Rogue, and surprise someone with a crossbow, is it still a crit?
Is there any reason it wouldn’t be
Sharpshooter takes away 5 from your attack roll to hit, but adds 10 to your damage
Assasin says that if you surprise someone with a weapon attack, it crits
That’s an option you can choose to use on a per attack basis
Also it wouldn’t change whether you crit
Nice
So I can crit with a crossbow, using sharpshooter feat, guarranteed if they can't see me?
Surprise is not directly related to whether they can see you
My DM says surprise means they don't know I'm there, so I'm going to take that over something else.
That’s a basic explanation of surprise
But that’s not how it works mechanically
Here’s the actual rules around surprise
You might want to reread the sections of the Basic Rules that cover Making an Attack and Critical Hits
I think you're getting attack rolls and damage rolls mixed up
And critical hits don't double modifier,s only dice
Hi! Im new to all this but love dnd. Is there a one shot or anything i can join as a newcomer?
Have a look in #looking-for-players
@mint citrus Thanks, you're right, I researched it, and now I am better Oogweducated
It's (2D20 + 10) + Dex modifier
not really, no
You're right
If I crit with sharpshooter feat with light crossbow it's 2D8 + 20 + Dex modifier + Proficieny Bonus (if proficient)
Thank you for properly Oogwayducating me
at best you get
1d8 (rolled twice), +10, +dexmod, +sneak attack (rolled twice)
for damage
the attack roll would just be
advantage, +dexmod, +profbonus
two very different and absolutely not interchangeable, steps of attacking and damaging creatures
@topaz garnet Sneak attack is doubled too, right?
How do i calc my ability scores or whatever
@mortal elbow What level are you starting at?
Right, yes
There’s three methods
three methods
Standard Array, Point Buy, and Rolled.
I would use standard array
I find point buy easier
SA and PB explain themselves, as does rolled, but rolled can be a bit wordy for someone making their first character
Perform the following process six times in total.
roll 4d6 (four six-sided dice). Let's say you get 6, 5, 3, 1. Remove the lowest roll. For that roll, we remove the 1. Combine the three remaining rolls, and that's a score. For that roll, it's 6, 5, and 3, so 14.
After getting your six scores, allocate each score to an ability of your choice. For example, we could put that 14 we got in any of the abilities, it's your choice as you make your character.
Strength is the ability to crush a tomato.
Dexterity is the ability to dodge a tomato being thrown at you.
Constitution is the ability to eat a rotten tomato and not get sick.
Intelligence is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing NOT to put a tomato in a fruit salad.
Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
That tomato explanation is pretty simple
Strength, measuring physical power
Dexterity, measuring agility
Constitution, measuring endurance
Intelligence, measuring reasoning and memory
Wisdom, measuring perception and insight
Charisma, measuring force of personality
There’s also this
So if I have 27 points
Hmm
I'll probably max out dexterity and charisma
The rest idk
The points aren’t linear btw
Huh
What class are you planning on being? That affects what stats are important
Wisdom is your most important stat then
Ill probably just max out those three then
And be stupid, weak and have a horrible immune system XD
Wisdom, constitution, and Dex are your three most important as a Druid
Never dump con, it helps determine hp
O
Damn but I wanna be charming and agile 😔
Oh well I've made ev spreads more complicated than this I'm sure I can figure it out
I would max Wis, and have moderate Cha, con and dex
Hang on let me get a good spread for it
Good news is you can very safely dump int and Str
They each do things.
STR primarily affects your carrying capacity and your melee weapon attacks with most weapons.
DEX primarily affects your Armor Class when unarmored or wearing light armor, and to some degree when wearing medium armor, and it affects your ranged weapon attacks.
CON primarily affects your maximum hit points, giving you some bonus HP per level you have.
INT primarily affects your knowledge - many checks to see if your character knows something will revolve around Intelligence.
WIS primarily affects your senses and intuition - your Perception checks for example.
CHA primarily affects your force of personality - your 'social checks' will benefit from higher Charisma.
That said, there's also saving throws. Strength is mostly used for resisting effects that would move you or grab at your feet. Dexterity is extremely common, used for dodging flames and shocks. Constitution is also common, used for 'how tough are ya' moments such as against poison and cold, or concentrating on a spell when you're taking damage. Intelligence is rare, but usually is involved with weird mental effects, such as inserting an illusion or devouring your intellect. Wisdom is common, usually to resist 'charms and fears' and other more usual mental effects. Charisma, as a saving throw, is mostly reserved for the super weird stuff - possession, banishment, and the like.
I SEE CARRYING CAPACITY SIGN ME THE F#%K UP
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores is the entire explanation
Wait dexterity doesnt affect my ability to sans fights?
what?
It can affect your armor class, making it a little harder to hit you?
Ohh
I thought you meant like
Armor effectiveness
I'm slightly confused about charisma but I assume it's geared more towards persuasion checks than wether people actually like me or not
Like having 8 charisma won't mean I'm just automatically socially awkward does it
Just less likely to pass checks and such
it'd just be a -1 to charisma checks and saves
I’ve figured out a good setup for your stats, not including racial bonuses
Dragonborn
Okay well what would it need to be a flat 0
No -1
8str, 14dex, 12 con, 8 int, 15 Wis, 14 cha
- 10 is the average for a human
Dragonborn
You could also swap Cha and con
Also, the 'mental' abilities - INT, WIS, CHA - are used by the spellcaster classes. Also, occasionally, some 'martial' classes.
Intelligence is used for Wizards
Wisdom is used for Clerics and Druids, as well as Rangers. It's also important for Monks, with their Ki abilities.
Charisma is used for Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Bards, as well as Paladins.
And a Dragonborn, most civilised races really
That looks like a setup for a Cleric if I've ever seen one
You generally want even stats, as that’s when the modifier changes
As a Dragonborn, you’ll have 10 Str if you don’t change it from base, and +1 cha, so you could go 11 cha and have 12 total
Sounds good
Hello everyone!! I'm Noel I'm a very new DND player here to make friends and learn 🙂
Pulling myself up from a cliff lol
Yes, but chances are pretty low that will happen
Strength (Athletics) is what a DM will probably call for when it comes to rock climbing and holding on
Also bc of the +2 Str from Dragonborn you’ll have 10 in total, so a 0 modifier
Anybody willing to be friends?
Ayo fellow newbie druid
YOOOOO : )
Okay apparently ive got 2 points unaccounted for
Should I bump my int to 10
Or judt make dex and cha 13
Nah ill do 13
The principle of having an idiot that can dodge and wit you to death is hilarious
Equipment OR gold???
Why must i choose 😔
Um
So
Can anyone tell me what a 15 yo dragonborn would weigh
Prolly depends heavily on that specific dragonborn
Also are dragonborn any larger than other races
Like male humans and most elves i imagine would be ~6'
Like irl
Dragonborn mature to adulthood around age 15 and weigh on average 250 pounds, usually well over 6 feet tall
Late teens maybe
The issue is that children in dangerous situations can be a bit concerning
Just think about the variability that an 18 year old human can have with height and weight, and dragonborn probably have that much variability
But yeah, in general, dragonborn are taller and heavier than humans
So if a 15 yo db is a 18 yo human what would a 15 yo human be in db years
Math tells me 12
But more complicated math tells me that's not quite how that would work
Hold on wait
Lemme google
What percent of 15 is 18
I mean it doesn’t necessarily translate like that if they mature at different stages to humans
It’s about 83%
So dragonborn age 17% faster than humans or did I math wrong
The maturity rate is different for dragonborn
So it would be about 12.5 by my maths
I think that’s right
Young dragonborn grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. They live to be around 80.
That’s kinda what I was thinking
That implies adulthood for dragonborn is 50 💀
The curve might look completely different
Wait it says young dragonborn go quickly
Maybe after the first couple years the curve slows?
Yeah
Hence why they have a more human life expectancy
Irl human anyway idk how long dnd humans live
Id assume close to 80 though
Sounds right
But ho boy
Ive never been good at figuring out curves
Or much math other than the fundamentals
Hold up maybe theres a website
I feel like 14 would be closer to 16/17 than 15
But then again its hard to say
14 may be 13 14 15 16 and 17 all in one for db 💀
You can probably just tell everyone in ur group that it’s the equivalent of a 15 yo human

Hi I really wanna get into DND and I was wondering if there are tips anyone would like to say? I have also read the DND beginners handbook and have been listening to a podcast in hopes it would help me learn so far not.
Have you made a practice character?
Yes
Start with a fighter or barbarian as your first character(at least just for a session or 2) and then focus exclusively on how your character works until you get it down. Then you can branch out and start learning the rest of the game. But a narrow scope is key to quickly learning
That’s my suggestion at least
OK thank you both
Where would I look to hopefully find a group in the #find-a-game
Ok
Reply to posts in there
Use the thread under the message you want to reply to
OK I'll try that lol
would I be able to create a group to play and get a dm other than myself? i have doubt just because of my timeline thingy. and if noone joins can i just stop asking?
You could try
ok ill think abought it
Is it embarrassing to be new and not understand anything at all? I feel embarrassed to say that asking questions and being new is a nuisance to experienced folks🥲
Everyone is new at some point, it's not a unique or special experience so there's no reason to be embarrased by it
Thank you. There are just so many details and it makes me feel lost…
There's loads of us here who would love to help with your questions
What’s a good class to start with? I played BG3 and absolutely loved Warlock
If you've played a caster BG3, you've probably got a fairly solid grasp of the game mechanics - I would say all the full spellcasters are the most fun, since they have the most options in and out of combat
Sorcerer is an exception, it's a new player trap
Druid and cleric, being prepared casters, are my usual recommendations to new players
Gale was so good once he reached high level wizard. I tried Sorcerer but I did not seem to grasp it as well as fighter, warlock and wizard classes
I will definitely try that. What do you think about rogues? I did not like them as much in the game but I heard that rogues are more used in d&d… or well… its not the least used i guess
In the tabletop version, there's quite a few (4ish) classes focused on dealing damage and... not really doing a whole lot else, honestly. Of these, rogue does some of the lowest damage.
Rogues also get to boost skill checks, but honestly Bard kinda does this better, so play Bard if you'd like to be good at skill checks
and all the rogue subclasses are kinda boring/lackluster both roleplay-wise and mechanically, esp compared to other classes
hello i am looking to get into dnd and have a freind who has played before, ive played once and yea looking to get into it, its all a bit overwhelming regarding character creation just to start with, if someone could have a chat with me and share a bit of insight and guidance i would really appreciate it
Ok ok i think i have an idea for my first character. Thank you!
Have fun!
I’ve helped a ton of people get into dnd over the years. I always tell them to narrow down the scope as much as possible. I’d suggest picking either fighter or barbarian as your class(the two simplest ones) and only focusing on what YOUR character can do and nothing else. Let the dm know you’re new and no one will mind whatsoever if you ask questions. The goal is to keep yourself from getting overwhelmed and to keep your character as simple as can be. At least for the first session or two. Then you can ask your dm about switching to a new character if you want
Once you’ve got your character down tight then you can start digesting the rest of the rule set
ive got a baseline sort of character that i want to be my starting character, i am on dnd beyond at the moment creating him, i just am not sure if the race sort of gells with the character i want to play
i am very interested in a sword mage cross class, i chose an water genasi fighter/ warlock
Dnd is casual enough so that you’d really have to TRY to make a character that doesn’t work. If you’ve got a good and fun idea I suggest you follow it
If you've gotten that far, where did you start with making them? What's your style?
i have barely begun to work on the backstory
Keiaga has an excellent point, worst comes to worst your group ends up being a monty python or Rick and Morty cast rather than The Hobbit, but either way it's a blast so long as everyone is being kind and inclusive,
i have to put alot of thought into my backstory ive got a rough idea but i dont want it to be stupid
ill have a chat to my mate tomorrow and we will spitball a few idead
Nice,
ideas
ill get him to join this discords
thanks everyone
ill be back on tomorrow after work
Don't worry about your ideas being stupid, you don't even have to have a full back story when you start, as a forever DM I've never gotten to play much, but when I do I usually find it easier to start with
A goal, something my character is striving for,
A drive, something that sets apart the goal from any other tasks, a sense of urgency,
And a reason, this is usually a good flaw in my character that I like to let the others inquired about and exploit for rp moments,
when the character creator mentions a 'variant' race, does this mean that there's some difference between the two (like, physically i mean), or is it strictly a difference in your racial passives?
No, it just mean variant rules
ie "the rules for this version of the human race option replaces the default rules"
oh, i see. are use of the variant rules dependent on the dm, or will most dms let you pick either ruleset for that race?
by the way, as a new player, how forgiving do people tend to be about shoddy acting when it comes to playing your character? i know there's probably no straight answer there, but it's honestly been one of the main reasons i've had cold feet about actually seeking out a campaign x_x
Extremely. No one can act. Make a dumb idiot fool out of yourself and your group will most likely only think highly of you for it
No one cares about acting, if you want to talk in your own voice and do minimal roleplay that is a fair and valid play style
Depends on the person. I've found that a lot of people here are pretty forgiving, but not everyone is.
i'd like to get better at it, but my voice is naturally very flat/not very emotive, so i was kind of worried i'd end up embarrassing myself off the bat
You also don’t have to act to play well. Narrating your character as a third person voice works just fine. “Johnny Jims will ask about the goblin and also call you dumb”
that's reassuring to hear, at least
Just find what you prefer and as long as you’re having fun, others will feel that energy and enjoy it
Nah, you'd be fine, trust me. As long as you aren't doing something to actually annoy people and ruin the fun, then people don't care. Poor acting is not something that will ruin the fun
I'm new to dnd but I've played before my friends have me hooked
I'm looking for another friend group to play more he's always going afk we play in xbox party chat

Ability Modifier. The ability modifier used for a melee weapon attack is Strength, and the ability modifier used for a ranged weapon attack is Dexterity. Weapons that have the finesse or thrown property break this rule.
Does a bow use STR or Dex?
Dex
Atack rolls would be 1D20+Proficiency bonus+Str or Dex modifier?
Thx
So my friend gave me a bit of her nee goblin artificer artillerist and she’s not very good at making backstory (same as myself) possible is there anyone that specializes in backstory around here?
You could ask chatgpt to make a backstory for you
Whats that?
We have #character-discussion where you can ask for advice on fleshing out your character
Just an ai program that responds to prompts (such as: “write a brief backstory for a goblin artificer in dnd 5e”)
how has the dm experience been till date!
I love dnd as a whole, so i plan to dm someday, just want to get in a few campaigns first
cant create games when you dont play them and all
Is it free to use?
Yes
It is, but I still actually would advise against using it.
It's not a replacement for speaking with your group or DM and making sure your character fits the lore of the game you're making it for.
Last time I had a player try to use chatgpt to make a backstory, it came up with details that didn't match any established settings and we ended up spending nearly as much time figuring out how to rework it as we would have done just making our own.
Tbf you can try expanding your prompts to fit the world if you can be bothered
She wasn’t given information
You don't need to start the campaign with a fully fleshed out backstory
Sometimes you can also go in with no backstory and make it as you go
Well she needs something at least
Your friend can just develop it as they go in response to the DM describing the world
You can honestly start with nothing more than "goblin artificer"
PC or NPC asks a question you don't have an answer to? "I'd rather not talk about it, it's personal"
Ideally though every time the question of some part of your backstory comes up, you make something up on the fly
And remember, if you don't like a detail, well your character was lying for some reason
Or your backstory could be as simple as 'a goblin who found an interesting device, decided they wanted to learn more, and have been adventuring to visit different places to learn more about artificing'
"Oh, you know how I said I'm on assignment from my artificers guild? That wasn't true, I got expelled and I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing with my life"
In-character statements of your backstory are not objective facts
Her goblin is very fond with tools that make things go boom as she said
That's a backstory
"I just like it when things go boom, and it turns out I'm good at making things go boom"
Her first idea was she was given the magic by a grand wizard that came through her area when she was young to help defend her people against some raiders and in that fight she also loss her voice
But she doesn’t really know if thats good or what goes from there
#character-discussion is a good place to look for feedback, but I will say it's a little awkward you trying to get feedback for someone elses character
Yeah i know shes asleep trying to get rest before the campaign
I think maybe just leave it to her? She'll figure something out
Shes asleep and I said I’d help her and I’ll feel bad if I said yeah got nothing but they also didn’t give her any information it seems
my general writing advice™️, not necessarily where dnd is concerned, is that any fleshed out character backstory should at base answer the question of, 'what made this character the person that they turned out to be?' there are all sorts of interesting ideas you could use to give more dimension and depth to a given character thru their background. that kind of stuff in normal writing is 98% brainstorming until you come across an idea that really resonates with you, not really something with a neat and tidy set of steps to it
i dont know if its any different for dnd though
Guess thats true
I was thinking of making them from a wasteland but unsure what names in dnd lore talk about wastlands
Or even if there are any
Alright thanks I’ll go write something as it comes to my head I guess
the thing is, for any given character archetype, personality, or trope that exists, there are a thousand different backgrounds that could shape them into that kind of character. so it's really hard to construct one that you're personally satisfied with on the first try
Im sure shes down to go with something simple
What lvl
Dm messed up information on time zones and she can’t make the campaign now anyways so she will have time to make the character for a different one
Any advice for RP when joining an ongoing campaign
Has the DM told you how your going to meet the party?
I am doing that tonight actually. The dm is keeping it simple using you're going to meet them in a tavern.
For RP that probably depends on your characters personality
iam hosting a new homebrew if any new players want to join
what is that?
