I'm quite new and I don't know if this character is fine to play
i did not think itd be this detailed
wish i could help but im as green as you can get
I like it
That's fine XD
Stats coincide with a rogue. DEX based.
Amazing detail
Chose a rapier for melee and a short bow for range to give you good combat options.
Idk about the rabbit companion, that’s up to your DM to allow tbh. Usually, companions have to be found in game, but it’s not a big deal.
I Haven't played an actual game but I know the gist of the game, I'm playing with chatgpt sometimes XD
Ohhh okie
Secret weapon is interesting. Add the secret weapon to your items and inventory for consolidation purposes. It would probably be treated like a dagger when it comes to damage and use
Alrighty thennn
I would recommend switching Con and Cha. Or some such thing, either way you want high Constitution
Noteddd
Also you'll want to work with your DM and group as far as stats generation. And just making sure the character concept works with that group's style of gameplay and setup.
CON stat affects your overall HP max, as a thief, you might wanna keep CHA a bit higher too though for social encounters.
But that’s up to you for that one tbh
Ohhh so Con affects my HP, I'll take note of that
what else could constitution possibly affect if not HP?
When it comes to ability scores though, most DMs I know prefer to have players roll their stats in front of them. So those could change depending on your DM
They are new Aud.
RenZ, if you haven't already, you should take a look at the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
The first 5 chapters go over character stuff.
My bad I don't know what Con is XD I'm a newbie
It's all good.
Thankies
Overall though, for a first character. It’s actually really well built out. Small details you didn’t know about but that’s alright.
Also, your Constitution Modifier (derived from the Constitution Score) is added to your HP for each level you have
So for example, a 4th level rogue has 4d8 hit dice, their first level is (8+con)hp, and each level thereafter is either (a roll of 1d8)+con or 5+con, added to your HP.
con mods add up fr its a big deal esp for casters but for everyone really
Well done RenZ! You have a great character start here!
Thanks guys, I'll keep your recommendations in mind
I'm personally a fan of the 'average' (rounded up for player HP increase) HP. A d8 averages 4.5, so over the course of ~19 rolls, you'd expect it to average at 4~5 on the die. Of course, there's room to get lucky, or really unlucky considering how important HP is.
I like a nice guaranteed value that's slightly above average.
That’s the fixed value choice?
A d8 averages 4.5
For the Rogue, Cleric, Monk, Druid, Warlock classes, they use a d8 for hit dice.
If you pick average, you get 5+con hp for that post-1st-level.
So if you pick average for every level, you're getting +0.5 higher than the average for every level.
A level 10 warlock picking average has, on average, 4 more HP than a 10th level warlock picking to roll their HP.
Since the warlock that rolls their HP expects an average of 4 or 5 on the d8, plus con.
But the warlock picking average always gets 5+con, never a 1, 2, 3, or 4.
Basically, it boils down to being half a point luckier as a guarantee, rather than hoping you actually get lucky.
hii, where do you think a person new to dnd should start? I have been playing bg3 (about 35h or so) and I would be interested in trying out an actual dnd session but I don't want to join a random group and ruin the experience for others if I don't know the ins and outs of the gameplay

Hello
Dose anyone know a good fairy home brew I could use?
Are you looking for a fairy specifically? There's a fairy race that's available in a few books
Both the Wild Beyond the Witchlight and the Monsters of the Multiverse books contain that Fairy option
Monsters of the multiverse Vol 4 just came out with a bunch of stuff for fairies I believe 🤔
no, monstrous compendium vol4, full of monster statblocks came out
Ah that’s what it was
Monsters of the Multiverse is a very different book full of both player races and monsters for the DM
Couldn’t remember. I saw it last night in a sleep deprived haze 😂
Hey there! I'm not sure if this is the right place, but I was wondering if there's a DND server for Italian players. A friend and I are looking to join a game, but the timings on the find-players platform are a bit late for us since we're both university students. Any help or info would be awesome. Thanks!
i don't either, i played once before so i don't know much about it

Being in the US (along with a lot of the player base), I'm not sure of other D&D servers that cater to specific regions. They must be out there, but I don't know if folks here will be able to help much with that.
Do you have a group/DM yet?
I don't think so but if there is a group i would like to join i just dk how
#find-a-game has instructions for using this server's Looking For channels.
Faith is just a role playing prompt. It’s whatever god you follow or religious organization you might be a part of. That is tough to do before actually joining a game, because many DMs like to make their own gods
What you enter in the “Faith” box has no mechanical impact or purpose. It’s just to help you role play
If you want to fill in something, you might just put down the sort of god you'd follow (like one of Luck or Justice or whatever), just as a placeholder.
well which channel in your prospective is better I'm sorry if i'm asking to many things its just its been a while since i played a D&D before
This is the perfect channel for questions.
If you're a player, you can make an ad for yourself in #750812887697588356. Someone might contact you and ask you to join their game.
You can also skim the ads in #looking-for-players and contact the people whose games sound interesting to you.
Both require you to read the instructions in #find-a-game.
Care of UnyingNoob:
Okay in the #find-a-game channel, type
/looking-forand then selectdm- the bot will give you a form to fill out. Once submitted, this creates a post in the appropriate channel (you can't type in the channel - only the bot can). The bot also creates an attached thread to your post. Use the thread to provide any further details or corrections.
hello
how do i put an ad in looking for dm
im trying to get into a game as soon as possible
The message just above yours covers it.
thanks
What websites other than roll20 and discord can I use to look for campaigns? I havent found any that fit my scheldule and are starting soon
I made a pretty extensive list here: #third-party-tools-archive message
ah thank you
ok I submit my thing so do i just wait or
So you can wait for someone to contact you or (my suggestion) look through the ads in #looking-for-players and contact anyone whose game sounds interesting to you.
I'm still creating my character I'm trying to think of what organization
To be clear, if you don't have a game or DM yet, you don't need all the details figured out in advance. But if you know how to make a character, that knowledge will serve you if your DM asks you to make changes so that your character fits the game/setting.
Keep in mind: Dungeons and Dragons is a game that takes patience and time to organize and set up. While it's certainly possible that folks might get lucky and get into a game that starts up quickly, it's fairly common to find yourself waiting days or weeks for the right game. Manage your expectations accordingly!
The campaign I am in only plays a few hours once a month. IRL is busy

New here. Need to figure out how to reserve/ask questions about joining a live game at Mox Boarding House in Portland OR
Call them and ask? Or send an e-mail?
Unfortunately this is the official international Dungeons and Dragons discord, so it doesn't interact with individual play locations at all.
Not all of us live in the US...
They said to get on discord
Perhaps they have their own Discord server?
Thank you, but I couldn't find anything under their name.
It's on their website. Scroll about three-quarters down the page.
Okay great. Thanks.
Razorwing with the above and beyond assistance
As someone who never played D&D cuz i never had friends to play with. i wanna ask a few questions...
This is the place to ask questions!
I got an advanced one. I want to play my first session as a vampire (yeah ik sun weakness. I'll travel at night).
The biggest question is.
Is vampire a class or a race? How does it work?
I just did a beginner session in Adventurers League. My character is now only level 2. Do I need to be higher to play in an actual game?
It's neither. There's a race called Dhampir which is kind of like a half-vampire, but there's no official race or class that is a full vampire. I'd suggest reaching out to your DM to discuss this, as it's not something a player usually ever has access to.
well i have no DM
im just a guy that wants to learn and someday play
The DM sets what level a player's character needs to be. Some begin at level 1. Some start higher than that.
We have #adventurers-league for Adventurers League specific questions. They'll know a lot more than folks here!
Vampires are not a playable race because they're too OP. The dhampir, as mentioend above, is the closest thing to a playable vampire.
So a common misconception that new players have is they create a character in the hope of finding a table that will let them play that specific character. That can happen, but you're likely to have more success finding a group if you have multiple character concepts with enough flexibility that you can tweak them to fit the particular setting/game.
yeah they exist
and they confused me with multiple edition thingys

btw. i love building critical chance in my games
can you go 100% crit chance on d&d?
Nope! The highest you can go is 10%.
That's correct. Critical chance increasing features and items are few and far between. There's other ways to increase your likelihood to crit, but that mostly involves attacking more times per turn.
that is incorrect
but either way its hard to build a lot of crit and actually be useful since a lot of crit isnt good
You're right, I apologize. 15% is the highest you can go.
and then with magic items and advantage you can get higher i believe
And even then, you're building a 15th level champion fighter. That's pretty late into the game! I'd not worry about fishing for criticals so much.
Not statically, but there are several conditional effects and game features that can guarantee an attack is a critical hit, such as the Assassin's assassinate feature, or the paralyzed condition
uhhhh hello? Very new but also very interested. I also have no friends so I never really go the chance to figure it out because I had no reason to sooooo
Can clerics pray to regain spell slots in 5e? I heard some other ttrpg that had that and it sounds really nice
uh, Tasha's Cauldron has an optional ability that lets them recover spell slots in exchange for channel divinity
Oh that's cool
I am also brand new with no friends that are interested in this stuff, at the end of an engineering degree with only a little free time but looking to find out where to play and the basics (I’ve played lots of video games like Neverwinter and the early Baldurs Gate so I understand some lore and how it works) but I have absolutely no idea how to begin this

Message I typed didn't send xD
What is opinion on terrain and creature case, I'm looking for. Solution for some visual great aids and mats, tokensfigurines cards dungeon kits etc on the other hand there's dragonlance deluxe pack about same price perhaps that would be better, there's also expanded rules pack ii seen
Monsters multiverse, tashas cauldron xanathars guide all in one
I have starter set, essentials kit, player handbook and a magazine subscription dnd adventurer already
Sounds like a good #dm-discussion question
Hey! I was wondering how character background creation works. Do you make your own background or does a DM help with that?
You can custom make your own or use a premade one, like Acolyte or Criminal.
I have seen the premade ones but they seem kind of vague.
when making a wizard class are you ssupposed to pick some starter spells or does it depend on the DM and the campaign beginning?
A level 1 wizard starts with three cantrips and six 1st-level spells.
thank you very much
At 1st level, you know three cantrips of your choice from the wizard spell list.
At 1st level, you have a spellbook containing six 1st-level wizard spells of your choice.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard#Spellcasting-410
Yeah, backgrounds are meant to be vague
There’s a difference between background and backstory
Background is a mechanical preset you choos
Backstory is purely flavour, and you make it yourself
For example, you backstory could be that you were a sailor who was shipwrecked and is trying to earn enough to get back to sea, so you might pick the sailor background
Can you fully create a Homebrew subclass completely free on dnd beyond?
I heard theres pay walls to it
Questions about D&D Beyond are better suited to #ddb-support.
Helloo, So i am currently a player, but i want to get into DM'ing. I probably want to do a "west marches" campaign, do you guys have any good tips for a 1st time DM?
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.

im not a dm
aw
im a player aswell
Its usually a multi day process, yes. Even if you get a response, you will need to work out scheduling and such
I'm a new dm looking for chaos 🤣 🤣

Thank youu
Can a cantrip's range be increased in any way? Like for example the message one
if you're a sorceror, Distant spell
I’m new to this server and am looking to join a game! How do I do so?
The Spell Sniper feat doubles the range for any spell with an attack roll.
Please read #find-a-game (carefully) to see how to use our Looking For Game channels
And for warlocks, there’s an invocation that increases the range of Eldritch Blast.
ty
i probably sound ridiculous, but how do torches work if the pc is using a two handed weapon?
You would need to drop the torch to attack with the weapon.
does the torch go out? or somthing else happen?
so it does stay lit?
The rules don’t explicitly state what happens if you drop a torch.
The DM can rule that torches don't work without a free hand or that it just sputters on the ground when droped or that it goes out.
that helps alot, thanks😅
But basically up to the DM
It says it doubles the range of a spell, so it works with cantrips too?
Yep
oh
Cantrips are spells, yes.
Sickk
im doing my first campaign as dm and im trying to get anything important down
wait, but metamagic needs a leveled spell though
Nice, thanks y'alll
We have the #dm-discussion channel if you want to pick the braisn of fellow DMs
how do loot drops work? do i set a random amount of gold based on the number of enemies or is there another way of determining?
I'm playing Baldur's Gate 3 which seems to follow 5e rules, why is my Warlock having 2 spell slots and an Eldritch Blast spell that does on average like 3 damage? Meanwhile the other party members have 4-24 (Shadowheart), Lae'zel has this Superiority Dice thing and Action Surge. And Astarion has sneak attacks which deal good damage every so often
There’s some loot tables in the DMG that can help.
This imp familiar is probably better than my character
I thought Eldrich Blast was good
Baldurs Gate makes some changes to the rules to make it work better for video game playing. So it's not exactly 5e rules.
I thought it was
Based on but enough differences to not be exactly D&D 5e.
I took Agonizing Blast, I'm level 4. It does 4-13 damage. But every attack roll is 65% hit chance. If I do the average damage. It's ((13 - 4)/2) * 65/100
so it's 3
Anyhow you might want to dive into the intracacies of it in #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers
This channel is meant for new to D&D folks to get help getting started.
I hope that channel doesn't have spoilers
We have #1136736147817631967 for spoilers
Right nice
ello
Welcome!
Can a sneak attack one shot enemies if its like an execution style attack?
I heard theres a rule for take downs while stealth
depends on the Dm and the dice
So no official rules?
Ok dang
although you may be thinking of the assassin subclass for rogue
oh yea
Is there a new player question here?
soo many math dice
This is sounding more like a #character-discussion topic maybe?
Not really just high dex sharp shooter a bow and assassin use hide after your attack free crit next round to
At least i thought
Okay I'm going to nudge this discussion to #character-discussion
Feel free to pick it up there.
Im still new asking
are there guides to d&d classes? not 'what spells should you pick' type of guides or 'how does the class work' type of guides, but how stuff on how you should play a class generally
There are JoCat Videos but each class is so versatile and flavorful so I would not consider them as a definitive explanation.
How do you mean by play? I am new too to dnd. Do you mean role play,?

… that’s not how you do that maths
you dont do 13-4
you take the dice roll average, which is 5.5, and add the modifier, +3 im assuming
so 8.5 becomes the average damage on hit
then multiply that by 0.65
which results in 5.525
no idea where you're getting ((13-4)/2) from
Can you only have 1 DM?
a single table generally only has one dm, but theres no reason you cant be in multiple tables at once
as i said, each table has a dm, and you can be in as many tables as you want
therefore, you can have multiple dms
Oooh okay2
but you wont be playing with them all simultaneously most of the time
Now, can you use the same character in multiple tables or would that not be recommended so info doesnt get mixed around?
If I could pick your brain for a moment, what prompted this specific idea?
progression would highly likely be different, with different things happening, and the games being in potentially different worlds
For example, it'd be difficult to take a Tortle Druid from a seafaring pirate campaign, into a domain of dread consisting of gothic victorian london, wouldn't mesh well.
Honestly, it sudden came to me as a though since I joined a friend's table, I still wanted to play in other tables, and mind you I'm still pretty new to the system but I know roughly how the game works now from watching YT, but then it just got me thinking because back when I asked questions about custom race the folks here told me to ask my dm, which made me wonder if one can only have 1 dm to have consistent info for when you create a character
That's only relevant as far as each table goes
Oh yeah that definitely wont make sense, I get that
Genuinely speaking I do want to look for another table, but probably one who would be welcome on a newbie...
I wanna play my rogue 😭
Oooo your a rogue
But yeah, this specifically is a very difficult and long-term thing to actually do. You're either going to rework the character or level them down to the level you're playing at in the next table, or try to find a game that would actually start at their exact level, or is at that level, and allows all of the stuff such as their magic items if any to be brought in
Basically, 98%ish likely you'll just make a new character for a table
Ohoo, well I'm not against that, I dont mind making characters
let it be known thats one of the reasons I joined dnd in the first place lol
You should be lucky finding a table thats welcome on a newbie hehe. im a Newbie myself and everyones been so loving and accepting so far
Princes you're not from Europe by chance?
i am!
Dang Loco stalking out here
i dont think so. ive only played in 1 campaign so far, the other 2 are gonns be later
It's a video game.
Lol
I knew some one named Elvira from Europe
im from Germany, so finding Tables in my Time range is so difficult
Me in SE Asia...
Maybe I do. I am loco after all
Me in US
Same, west coast
OMG, I have been studying DND rules for the past like five hours, is this necessary, should I know absolutely everything or can I just learn as I play?
Funny story I bought a set of dnd dice because they were relatively cheap (in my humble opinion) and got free shipping, only to realize 2 days later they were being shipped directly from China

Depends on your method of learning. I mean I'm new but I learn from watching people play and playing as well, and talking to people too
i didnt read everything myself yet, its definitely good to know but you will definitely learn while you play
Star I've played 4 one offs. I am still learning
all u really need to know is the basic rules and some terminology everything else id say u can learn in game
Alr thank you guys
Hey guys can i ask you something?
sure thing
Is there a game I could watch or like a stream I could watch? before I try and play with people?
there’s a butt load of dnd playthroughs out there, the most popular being critical roll and dimension 20
I hope to someday become a dm,my storytelling and writing talents might come to use...
Are High Rollers good to watch for dnd?
my Boyfriend said he would like to get into DnD, but he says hes afraid his Creativity might not be enough. while i do know his Standards and i think they are acceptable he still says no.
i bought him some Dice so he can get into it aswell but he didnt get to use them yet.
high rollers sound familiar
They recently made vids with the bg3 cast
thats right! i was watching that yesterday
i offered him to join the Campaign im currently in cause we could possibly fit another Player, but hes stubborn
My creativity is almost 0 and I can't rp for jack. I can role a dice
yeah outside of making ur character ur don’t have to be super duper creative
personally, im not the most creative recently either. most of my Characters kinda just evolve from an existing one
yet i still LOVE playing DnD.
nothing stops me
same Character different Class
My experience has been miss miss, do middling attack that leaves goblin at 3. Miss, blocked by path, grease slip, miss, other teammate gets the kill
Roleplay is good in BG3. But this combat is annoying actually
also, in one of my Campaigns we were supposed to roll our Abilities.
god i was Blessed with high rolls lol
65% base accuracy so you don’t even know if you won’t get killed by RNG
alr, I think by like tmr I might be ready for like a one off
An attack with 80% accuracy in a game like Pokemon would already be considered iffy. Never missed so much like in this combat system
What about missing a melee attack against a goblin in front of you? 65%
Later all, may you get high roles.
95% Hit Chance with Advantage.. and still a Miss (Shadowheart ffs..)
I rarely ever get that high
That and only 2 spell slots. Since I’m only spamming this one Eldritch Blast spell
pew pew
you should use your spell slots, you can cast some more powerful spells with them
you end up attacking a lot more in dnd combat
I do use them, But yeah only 2 of them
Then you just spam blast
I don't really have any big hits once it's out
what spells are you using them for?
yeah, you regain the slots on a short rest tho so you can regain them after every combat or two
The way BG3 works is you can only short rest 2 times before long resting with finite camp supplies
Hadar arms, crown of madness, dissonant whispers, and the laughter spell
how many encounters a day are there?
hideous laughter probably has the most value out of those
you should pick up some 2nd level spells tho
It's also because you don't get the handcrafted dialogue in combat like in dialogue scenarios. It's just the same computerized calculations with the same predictable outcomes. Barely a flinch or some arm coming off
oh crown of madness is 2nd level
And a misty step
misty step is generally good, but as a warlock you mainly want to be using spells with a lot of bang for their buck
spells that last a while
youre playing it decently
up until 5th level its a bit weak
at 5th level you get 3rd level spells tho which are the big kickers
also your eldritch blast shoots two beams
so youre effectively casting it twice whenever you cast it
I see
so you have a 88.75% chance to hit at all which feels a lot better
It seems like this Lae'zel warrior with Superiority dice and action surge is the best class right now
Fighter*
Oh and Second wind
battlemaster fighter is pretty decent
And high health
wizard is probably the strongest at this level tho
Ah I don't have one
Warlock, Fighter, Cleric, and Rogue
Guiding Bolt has been hitting pretty nicely ever since I had this party member
And lots of spell slots
The Rogue is also pretty weak without stealth attacks
Oh so there's a meta thing as well
yeah rogue and barbarian are the two weakest classes in the game
rogue is the single weakest imo
in an unoptimised party tho its not that terrible
Will enemies generally have more things that make them better?
wdym?
Nah I don't have enough context to properly word it, it's probably just encounter design
Resulting from going into enemy territory
enemies dont really have builds
they have statblocks, which are premade sets of stats and features
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/17077-zombie for example, here is the zombie statblock, which is what says what a zombie can do and what its stats are
the equivalent of a character sheet, but for a zombie
What about goblin mages or stuff like that?
What's so special about the class thing? Is it the spell slots?
a DM could take an apprentice wizard and make them be a Goblin, for example
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/17325-apprentice-wizard here is the old version of the apprentice wizard
There isn't a statblock for everything under the sun, but a DM can mishmash a couple things together (like what being a Goblin means to an any-race statblock such as apprentice wizard) or make something new
for reference
How do I find an online game? Also is roll20 a good option for beginners?

Hi
how are we
Good thx hbu?
yeah going good thank you
I have two characters in two campaigns I really like. I really do like these characters and am afraid of them dying. I know its silly and I shouldn't care so much about such a thing but I seemingly can't help it. Does anyone have any advice?
Ask the dm if you are likely to die first
I'm honestly not sure if they'd even know
I don’t really have any advice other than to just recognise and come to terms with the fact that your characters very well could die
It’s a part of the game
Okay thanks
Sorry if that’s not very helpful
No it's fine. I'm just having a hard time and it makes me feel stupid and selfish. I'm relatively new
It’s fine to feel that way
There’s nothing wrong with getting attached to a character
I'll certainly accept it if it does happen. Maybe I could make another character I like just as much. Thank you, I feel better after talking with someone about it.
Helo, I have a friend he needs to find a campaign, he is a newcomer, and he is pretty shy.

hey im really new to d&d and listen to podcast and played a little of baldurs gate 3 does anyone have a campain i could join to learn in?
See above for how to use our game finding channels
a d10 averages 5.5, so two is 11.
a d6 is 3.5, a d8 is 4.5, so together they're 8, +3 is also 11.
Ob
But the second will give you a more average experience with a slightly higher 'floor' to the roll
Oh I thought primal savagery was way better than shillelagh
shillelagh?
shillelagh doesn't add damage
it wouldn't be 1d6 + 1d8. It'd just be 1d8.
ah, that works for all melee attacks during it
Turns it to a d8 plus wisdom mpdifyer right?
technically, spellcasting ability modifier (such as a bard or warlock getting it, via magical secrets or pact of the tome respectively, being able to use charisma), so as a druid yes wisdom
average of 11 (4.5, 3.5 +3) or average of 11 (5.5 twice)
I'll go with primal. Tha ks for your help
would a dip into war cleric be good for a spore druid, cause can do a weapon attack as a bonus action
that'd be a question for #optimization
sorry
this channel is for the basics, and that doesn't include character optimisation, let alone multiclassing
No need to apologise, just letting you know
Hi,
How can I find a Group to help me wirh my first game
You can either use the looking for dm or looking for game channels or use the roll 20 game finder https://app.roll20.net/lfg/search/
If you head over to #optimization we can give you a good idea of how to avoid this thing called death

appreciated!
Anyone can help me on changing monsters attacks so they deal more damage as I feel like giving lvl12 to my one-shot party was a slight miscalculation
If you are just starting out, I would personally recommend that you stick to the monsters as they are written for now, but if you REALLY want to make your own, the DMG has some basic guidelines for the process: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/dungeon-masters-workshop#CreatingaMonster
Give em magical weapons
I don’t mean like making my own, I just feel like hitting lvl12 with 1d6 mace is gonna be very easy to clear as a thug
How would I do that?
Let's move this over to #dm-discussion , as it's a bit out of scope for this channel
I don't follow. I think you are mixing terms a bit here. "Levels" only apply to player characters, and "thug" is a monster stat block
It occurs to me that I didn't stop into the newcomers room and I'm a newcomer. So... Howdy

Do you know if there are campaigns for new players
Some campaigns in the LFG channels will directly advertise as being newcomer friendly, but even if they don't say that directly, it never hurts to ask. Most people are usually willing to have newcomers in their group, even if they don't say that in their advertisement.
That being said, I wouldn't recommend joining a game that starts at higher levels. Levels 1, 2, and 3 really act as a great tutorial for new players
Hey everyone, pretty new to D&D world (played a couple of games on pc like pathfinder and baldur's gate and watched a bit of critical role campaign 2 recently) it got me hooked so i bought an essentials kit and i'm gonna be a DM for this adventure (since i know the most about the game, which is kinda funny) to a small party of 2 players. One of them is definitely gonna try to be some kind of Samurai/Ronin and i'm wondering how would i let him use a Katana as a 2-handed weapon that uses dex instead of str, also i'm looking for some DM advice on how to run that adventure if someone played it/DM'd it before and how to make it more interesting for them since there's only 2 of them. I'm kinda afraid it will be a bit awkward because they won't have as much dialogues/ideas as a group of 5+ players
If you're a new DM, I'd advise against homebrewing a weapon; weapon properties are likely what they are for balance reasons. (See the discussion here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/general-discussion/9988-1d8-damage-versatile-with-finesse)
You could always let the player reflavor an existing weapon without any mechanical change.
For the adventure, we do have a channel for it in #1029833015423143957.
Long sword and then just say it's a 'special' one that has Finesse would work... but as iamrazorwing says homebrew is something to work up to - or you end up with pretty wacky things... and even adding Finesse to a longsword could have unintended consequences later on
What are the LFG channels?

oh okay. thanks. Also, I am a bit confused by the different races. Why are groups of races categorized under names (ie.MotM)? I wanted to make an owlin character but does that mean I won't be able to play them on a "regular" campaign?
You will have to ask your DM which playable races are available/allowed in their campaign setting.
Owlin is from Strixhaven so they may not be allowed in an Eberron setting, for example.
The “groups” of races just refers to which book that race released in. MotM stands for Monsters of the Multiverse.
When milestones are the selected method of leveling up in a campaign, what are some measurable ways that players can track how far/close they are to their next level?
They don't.
The DM decides when they reach the milestone. If the DM tells them if they're close then it rather spoils the adventure.
If the DM decides that the milestone is only after the PCs discovers the lost MacGuffin and the DM says, "Oh, you're close to leveling up because you're close the MacGuffin you haven't found yet!" then it kind of spoils the game. It's like skipping to the end of a murder mystery novel to find out who the killer is.
The entire point of milestone is that there isn't a determined point at which you level up. The rule for that method is literally just "Your DM decides"
Ok cool
Hello folks - quick question if you get a NAT 20 on a weapon with a 2d6 +3 fire does that mean then i would roll 4d6 +6?
All damage dice are doubled.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#CriticalHits
When you score a critical hit, you get to roll extra dice for the attack's damage against the target. Roll all of the attack's damage dice twice and add them together. Then add any relevant modifiers as normal. To speed up play, you can roll all the damage dice at once.
Im starting to DM. I'm going to use Dragons of Stormwreck Isle as my first campaign. And I'm going to have my players use custom characters. I was just wondering. After I complete the campaign, would the players roll a new character for new campaigns? Or use the same characters?
but not any +fire / arcane etc dmg?
On a critical hit, a weapon that deals 2d6+3 damage will deal 4d6+3 damage, no matter the damage type
That's up to you as the DM.

Hi both. Myself, my wife and our 15 year old son want to start getting into D&D. Would be awesome if someone could point us in the right direction about how to start 🙂 thank you
try DnDBeyond for characters
Welcome! Check a few messages up for some handy starter links.
The best start would be to read the rules and try to get started with some basic stuff
Hi everyone! Brand new to playing D&D, I've watched plenty of people play over the years and decided its time to try it out myself. I've played some RPG tabletops in the past and watched some D&D shows on Dropout. Going to dive into the rules and create myself a character 🙂
Welcome!
Your experience sounds just like my own when I finally convinced myself to get into it, if thats any metric to go by I'm sure you'll love it
I'm also new to DND i want to learn as much as possible first before i join a Champaign, any tips?
🍾
There’s some good starter links a few messages up.
But if you’ve got any specific questions, folks here are happy to answer!
thats awesome! thank you!
First question, so once I dive into the rules and make a character what specifically should I look for in a game to join? Is there anything that I need to acquire physically or print out?
It depends if you play in person or play online.
I'd like to play online
If you play in person you will probably just need a set of dice but you can always use a dice roller app.
Check out #find-a-game
Hello I'm also new and would like learn to play

hi everyone
I’m new to dnd, my only experience with it have been watching some friends play and playing baldur’s gate 3
Welcome! We have some useful resources linked in the pinned messages here in the channel.
so, i have a fair amount of experience playing as a player. however i would like to learn to dm. i have the dungeon master’s guide and started on it but havent gotten very far. does it really say everything i need to know?
#dm-discussion is a great place to hang out and pick the brains of fellow DMs.
DMG is really that - a guide. It's generally viewed as decent but perhaps poorly organized/hard to find that thing you know it mentions but can't remember the page or section it's in.

I apologize
What stat does artificer use for attacking with weapons such as heavy crossbows
Ok
The exception comes with Battle Smith Artificers being able to use Intelligence when attacking with magic weapons, instead of Strength or Dexterity.
Artificer with a eldritch cannon
The DMG can be handy, but I think that, in addition to its organziational issues, it's light on guidance for how to actually run the game. It's more big picture than I found useful when I was starting. YouTube and blogs have lots of good advice: Matt Colville's "Running the Game," Sly Flourish's Lazy DM books/site/videos, the Alexandrian, the Angry GM, and Johnn Four's Roleplaying Tips are my personal favorites.
This guide is also super practical: https://howtogm.guide/
ok dumb question but getting confused. is spell save DC the value that enemies use to roll against my spell attacks?
Enemies targeted by spells with an associated saving throw need to roll a total equal to or greater than the caster's spell save DC.
If a spell says to make an attack, the caster rolls and compares it to the target’s AC.
If a spell says to make a saving throw, the target rolls and compares it to the caster’s Spell Save DC.
There are attacks and then there are saves.
If it's an attack, like Fire Bolt, you make an attack roll against the target's AC, dealing damage if you meet or beat their AC.
If it's a saving throw, like Burning Hands, the enemy makes a saving throw against your DC, with effects dependent on if they succeed or fail.
Mechanically, something is only considered an attack if it involves an attack roll.
Ones that involve a saving throw instead (like Burning Hands) aren’t considered attacks.
Hello, I am new to DnD and am reading through the manual right now to get into it and understand the game more intently. I was wondering if anyone here has any videos that could explain these rules in detail (also, creation of a character etc) in a short form. I find that most people I try to convince to play the game usually get turned off by it because of the amount of text they have to read (which is also why I'll probably end up being the DM most of the games (do send videos about being a DM as well if you have those.)) So again; if anyone has good videos surrounding these topics that I could send to my friends, that would be highly appreciated (plus I could also learn more from them as well.)
Handbooker Helper and WASD20's Rules School on YouTube are good breakdowns of various game elements. WASD20 also has a character creation video worth checking out.
Thank you! Off the top of your head, do you remember or have any slight idea of how long these videos are?
The Handbooker Helper ones average 5-7 minutes each, I think.
Handbooker Helper videos are under 10 minutes. I think WASD20's are closer to 15? And the character creation video is about 30; it's a process however you slice it.
As for videos on DMing, I think Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series is the best out there. But there are so many others.
This is fine though, I think this will be more digestible for my friends than actually reading, since I doubt they'll even try to pick it up
Thank you guys a lot!
Happy gaming!
Personal question, are there any games held here on discord or other servers? I would like to try out a character and see how far I can get and also get response on my creation, even if it is just for a short quest etc
No games are hosted here. But we have Looking For Group channels. Start with #find-a-game.
Currently my Goliath character is horribly mutated with 50% warp with one of his arms being covered in metal and at the end a massive claw the spin at high speed I have 150 hit points with the Armour plus 10 damage bonus but I'm realy dumb and I massacred a camp of humanoid rats ITS OUR SECOND DAY IN CAMPAIGN
Just so you know, the place to post about what's happened in your game is #tales-from-the-table.
ty all
Hi there, I'm still pretty new to DND and I heard Adventurers league is a good place to start, is there a channel where I can look for those games?
i think #find-a-game
thanks
Does anyone have any tips for writing character backstories
Nah, #1050206572535623690
since its only you and the DM that will likely ever read it, doing a real rough write up - perhaps even only using dot points - can be totally ok. Don't feel pressured into writing a fictional short-story of your characters pre-campaign life if you dont want to
because I have a ton of ideas but I don't know how to connect them
What do you and your DM need to know about the character to get the story started?
Ultimately, a good campaign is about the characters. The backstory is just setting the stage for the main event.
So it’s fine to keep the backstory incomplete. It’s fine if there’s holes. Make it Swiss cheese.
Your DM can help fill in those holes, with or without your foreknowledge, and use them to tie your character into the story.
How can i play with a friend?
You’ll generally need more than two people
You learn the rules, get a group, one of you decides to be the dm, then you pick an adventure or make one, and you play
With some kind of web thing or... How
Maybe have a look at the basic rules, they explain at the start what dnd is
I'm new at this
Dnd is a table top role playing game not a video game
But maybe there's a DnD online or something
There isnt a compurter running the game
Cause that tables are not cheap
If you’d like to play a computer game there are options
What ones?
Those are not the focus of this discord
Wdym?
There is not a specific table you need
Then?
You can try Baldur’s Gate 3 which is popular now
The game boi, the DnD game is not cheap
Ah ok ty my pc can't run that thing
All the rules are free
I need a DnD computer option
Also please do not call me “boi”
You are on a discord server for the tabletop game
If you want to find a video game thats similar to dnd, you can look for that…on google?

There is nothing you need to buy to play dnd
I'm doing that and the beyond DnD OFFICIAL PAGE says that
They are asking about video game i think
Dnd beyond is not a video game
It is a digital set of tools to help play dnd
Dnd beyond is an app that is a tool for playing the tabletop game
So you are telling me that this server is to play or to discuss about the game?
This server is to discuss the game
The dnd beyond website is a set of tools to help play the game, but it is not a video game, or the actual place where you play the game
Then why when i search things to play the game
Online
This is not a server to play the game
It os a server to discuss the tabletop game
Sends me to this server
Bc google can not read your mind
It is an imperfect search engine
because you arent reading carefully?
You will never get exactly what you want
At its simplest, D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together.
The rules (and the random roll of the dice) help shape that story.
Generally, the rules are written with a party of four players (and the DM) in mind.
Then why the table of the game exists
What “the table of the game”?
A table keeps books and stuff from falling on the floor
You can play on the floor if you want
D&D is referred to as a tabletop RPG because it’s typically played sitting around a table, like a board game.
its possible but less comfortable
It does not have to be played around a table.
Again, it’s just you and your friends telling a story together. All you really need is a way to communicate with each other.
I still think this person is looking for a videogame
If you want to do that communication over the internet, go for it.
theyre looking for a video game and not understanding that this is for the ttrpg
Okay, we will stop talking, and you can explain exactly what you mean
It seems they left the server
They’re back it seems

Looking for advice: thinking of a "necromancer" type character with a focus,on animate dead and other necrotic abilities, was thinking either a scribe wizard (allows every spell to be necrotic.... imagine, a necrotic dmg fireball xD) or possible a cleric of maybe the twilight, or death domains that focuses a lot of damage dealing on touch attacks (inflict wounds)? But not sure which would be better...the wizard has more versatility in spells and out of combat utility but cleric has more in combat versatility and survivability.
Also not sure which is better for crafting magic arms/armor? I feel like the cleric could use more magical items then a wizard?
you probably want #character-discussion
i'm not seeing that? what is it listed under?
nvm, i found it, i had to manually add it to the list, thx
hi
Welcome!
Heya, i'm looking for a new adventure. I thought about ruins and so.
I hoped for a collection of more or less one shots who are leading to a bigger discovery or evil. Something like that so...
My players are level 2 now, close to lv 3 (25xp missing) so if they are doing good before we start the next adventure in the prpare phase while in town etc i will surprise them with the 3th level.
So i'm not sure what's next. Problem first, we have one player who decline to play in english. A lot of works are not playable with this, sadly.
So i'm looking into Baldurs Gate, Descent into Avernus or Journey through the radiant citadel
the last one is mentioned for the one shot you can play one after another
@bleak gale You want #dm-discussion. this channel is for beginner/basic questions

How decent are phantom rogues?
Good #character-discussion question.
(I’ll always say play what’s fun for you and fits well with your D&D game and group you’re playing with)
Sorry, basically meant are they beginning friendly
Hmmm… they are a little more complex than other rogue subclasses.

It can take a bit, so be patient.
Hey Flint. Sorry to hear your having a rough go at finding a game.
Are you looking for a campaign or maybe just to play?
like a one shot?
I haven't played at all, prolly a beginner-friendly game
I played the DnD tutorial in the Dungeons website, the choose-your-own-adventure thingy
We have a discord group of friends and we run one shots on the monthly
Ah, nice
Theirs two campaigns active atm but we have raffles for one shots and we priortize the newer players
I'm interested
i can shoot you a invite if you like and you can watch out for a pop up
Yes, please
Greetings everyone
Sorta just decided to get into DND recently, hope I won't have to read the entire 290 page book lol 💀
You don't need to. Just read the first four chapters on character creation.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
You don't need to have the whole thing memorized, but its definitely a good idea to at the very least know where certain rules are within the book, so you can reference them as you play. And of course, if you are playing with more expirienced players, they can help you out with things as well. But I would recommend reading the chapters on character creation, since you need to do that before the game starts. Knowing the basics of the chapters on combat will help as well
A huge portion of the book is spells, and you won't ever even need to read most of those even if you do play a spellcaster.
hello everyone!! I was thinking about getting into dnd, but was unsure of how to find a beginner friendly group. I would prefer an European group as that would fit with timing a lot. also, do i need to buy any of the source books to get started or no?
The basic rules are available for free, so you can absolutely get started with just those. As for finding a beginner friendly group, you can search through the #looking-for-players channel to find an advertisement that says "beginner's welcome" or something similar. Most groups are more than willing to play with a beginner though, even if it doesn't say so in the ad, so if you see one you like, it never hurts to ask. Though, at the very least, I would recommend against playing in a campaign where you start at a higher level.
thanks. do i @ the person that the bot tags on the top of the messege? or how do i ask to join?
Underneath each ad, there is a discussion thread. You can send a message in there, or send a direct message to the person tagged in the post.
thank you 🙂
Fact check please, playing tonight with my kids had such good fun, but i am a monk - i have a quarterstaff i understand i am allowed this because it is versatile thus meets the criteria, my question is this - when i attack ,must i only use one handed dice result or can i use two handed dmg versatile? TYVM in advance
The criteria for what?
how should you decide which class you'd like to play? is there a trick to it or is it just kind of a situation of 'this sounds cool, guess i'm going with this'?
when i roll am i rolling for one hand damage 1d6 or versatile 1d8?
If you use the quarterstaff in both hands, you can deal the 1d8. If only in one hand, 1d6
So long as your other hand is free when you make the attack, you get to pick. If you only have 1 hand free, then you must use 1d6
It all depends! Most people just pick a class they like or see a subclass they wanna try out, or maybe the campaign they join has a restriction like no wizards, or maybe they want to fill a niche the rest of the party doesn't have like a paladin in a party of all mages
TYVM but any weapon that specifically says two handed like great club even though it is simple because it is two handed i am not allowed to use it
Its basically just "this sounds cool." You can talk to your other party members, to try to make sure everyone fills out their own niche, but that's not a requirement for the game to be fun
If a weapon has the two-handed property, it will not count as a monk weapon for you. You are still allowed to use it, but using it will not trigger your class features that activate after you make an attack with a monk weapon, such as Martial Arts
The Two-Handed property and the Versatile property are two different things. So long as the weapon doesn't have the actual Two-Handed property, the number of hands you use for an attack with it does not matter. It will still count as a monk weapon for you
Hello. Maybe character optimization might be better. As a warforged artificer. How do I make bullets for a revolver?
Can u sell off items u don't want after creating a chr before starting a campaign, selling items for.half.price is generally a.good way to go.i have read. For example my ranger has a staff from.backgrojnd and I don't need it so sellnit for 1sp since it's 2sp to buy
Check with your DM as whether firearms are even allowed in their games is a DM decision.
He said they are but I need to make everything
Another "Ask your DM" question - how to handle shopping and selling is up to them.
Good point
So it's down to the dm there is no geenrl rule for it ?
Okay then ask them how they'd like to handle creating ammunition like bullets. Again we can't answer that - that's up to the DM to decide how it works in their game.
Any suggestions in case he asks me how ism going to do vs telling me
No there isn't a general rule - there's only listed prices of items but how selling/reselling things works is very much up to the DM to figure out how they want to handle it.
Any recommended YT videos to understand how to break into the dnd world? I’ve found a video on how to set up a game, but I’m not looking to be a DM.
OK great thanks
Like is there a standard bullet materials?
Using alchemical and smithing tools you can spend x hours to generate y bullets maybe. But this isn't really a newcomer question as it goes beyond the core rules of the game.
Oh and a supply of base materials

during character creation, it seems that you're given the choice of picking from a set of artisan's tools (ex. kits for smithing, masonry, painting). do these have any actual utility in campaigns, or are they mostly for roleplay purposes? like, will my gear have durability to worry about that would justify picking smithing tools for example?
There is no durability concerns for usual games of dnd, most tool kits just help add to the RP aspects of your character. However if you wanted to craft things or if your DM decided you had to do some sort of check and needed to have the correct set of tools or kit, you'd need that. Plus the potential of being proficient with them and using that instead of a particular skill
any dm here willing to teahc a lowly little lad the basics of playing? ive read alot but im unable to actually ut it to use as most campaigns reqiure some experience
artisan tool proficiencies are almost entirely for role play only
i see, thank you
What?? Lmao
Toto had a question about tool kits and a few people answered them, that's all
it's common courtesy to thank people when they answer your questions
I understand that, but did they answer your question?
If they didn't they probably would have asked for clarification.
I'm not sure why you're so focussed on this though?
i mean it was a satisfying enough answer for me
'do artisans' tools have practical use or are they mostly for roleplay'
'theyre mostly for roleplay'
'ok, thanks'
Ok. If you consider that an answer. Then, cool. Good for you. To me, that was just a jumble of words with no meaning. But it was your question. Not mine. So I apologize for questioning if it made you uncomfortable
Anyway let's get back to answering folks new to D&D's questions.
Is anyone stronger than an Eldritch Knight?
Yes and much depends on context
Thats not a newcomers question
Depends on their strength score
seems like something to learn about in optimization
But if you want to dig into character optimization, please use #optimization.
This channel is for new to D&D questions
I'm very much a newcomer, and I'm honestly asking, so I think it is
☝️
Okay - well as a moderator I'm pointing you to the most appropriate channel for that discussion: #optimization
I'm brand new
I’m making a character sheet but the internet searches I am doing are kinda not making sense on how to exactly do it
Could anyone give me an easier to understand guide or just a set of rules?
(Not sure if this is the right channel because there is a character channel but I’m not sure if my question fits either)

I don't want to play a warlock, I'm not trying to make a character, I'm new to the world, and am asking about a class that seems very strong to me. But I don't personally like it
Pair this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcNgj0KPYuA) with the Basic Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules) and you should be able to make a character.
Thank you!
We arent here to debate class strength with you
Nor your personal preferences
I don't know class strength, other than the little I have read, I'm not trying to debate anyone
Look at the different classes and pick something that you feel would be interesting. Strength is relative and context matters in D&D. When you're playing with a decent group, it doesn't matter what class you pick because the DM and group work together to make sure the game is fun for everyone playing. "Strength" doesn't really matter all that much.
Are they a strong subclass? Yes. Is there stronger classes or characters? Maybe. But that all depends on a lot more and is outside the scope of this channel. They are definitely something cool to play as though
I learned a bit about warlocks today, and it was pretty cool, is my only point, that's all I was trying to say, sorry if it seemed like more
It's all good. If you wanted to know about them, ypu could just ask like "What are the strengths of the subclass Eldritch Knight as I'm thinking maybe I wanna play one" might be a bit more appropriate for here
I'm as much a newcomer as there is, I apologize if I sounded like I know anything
right, okay, question: can different buffs that do similar things stack with one another? so for example, if i had a level 6 paladin with +3 to their saving throws thanks to their aura of protection, could i then use bless and choose myself as one of the targets, and get the 1d4 saving throw bonus on top of the flat +3? will i get a +4 to +7 bonus on my saving throws (say for example a concentration saving throw to keep bless up), or will the game choose whichever bonus is higher and limit me to that (example, if a 4 is rolled for the bless saving throw it would use that instead of stacking)
I don't want to play one, because I don't agree with their base characteristics, but they seem very powerful
Effects of the same name dont stack
Differently named ones can
so in the case of bless + aura of protection, you'd benefit from both the +3 and +1d4?
You giving opinions based on limited knowledge with subjective slants tacked in. Which can be corrected if you go an appropriate channel
even though they do something similar by affecting your saving throws?
I said what i said.
I may be wrong, but temporary hit points only come from the highest source, right? They don't stack.
right, thanks
They can come from many different sources, but only the highest current single source is in effect, right?
Temporary hit points do not stack
You can have +3 from here, +5 from there, plus 12 from that, and +20 from Aid, and only Aid counts, right?
That's it.
Wrong
isn't aid just flat extra health, not temp health?
Aid does not provide temporary hit points. It increases your hitpoint maximum. Not the same, does stack with temp hp
Multiple features that grant temp hp would not stack. Pick one, thats it
well. it's 'temp health' in a literal sense but in a mechanics sense it counts towards max hp i thought
Temporary HP is different then a spell that increases your HP total for a time.
Really? I'm glad I mentioned it. You can have temp hp on top of aid?
Look at any spell slot chart
Go to the wizard section, read the chart for spell slot and spell progression. Same for any spellcasting class
But cleric and wizard would both have 9th-level spells by then -- the highest you can get.
right, there's something i think i understand that's in the basic rules but i wanna ask for clarification. the proficiency bonus that you get is the same for every character of a certain level, right? so for example all level 6 characters will get +3 to all rolls relating to skills that they're proficient in, no matter what other factors are at play? is this how it works? so if i was level 6 and had persuasion and intimidation proficiencies, i'd add +3 to the roll for taking either action, but the +3 despite being a flat value only applies to actions or skills i'm proficient in?
sorry if i'm not very good at articulating
Yes
every clsss has a chart. Which will say the same
Is Aid the same in BG3 as 5e, so at level 9 it would be like +40?
Hello im new to here and to Dnd in general. looking to start.... but don't know how.
Pretty much every question can be answered by just looking at the class description
Read the pinned materials
You got it! Your proficiency bonus applies to:
- Attack rolls using weapons you’re proficient with
- Attack rolls with spells you cast
- Ability checks using skills you’re proficient in
- Ability checks using tools you’re proficient with
- Saving throws you’re proficient in
- Saving throw DCs for spells you cast (explained in each spellcasting class)
Put your BG3 knowledge away. Read the spell
All of your questions would be answered if you spent just a little time reading, and it would help your understanding as a whole
All spells do is what they text says, so any spellcaster MUST spend time learning their spell list
I know, BG3 isn't DnD, but doesn't upcasting pretty much work the same?
It works similar to but the numbers might be different
Read the spellcasting rules
Tell me if I'm wrong. I'm brand new. I don't know crap.
Thats more reason for you to read
This channel is not a substitute for learning on your own
I have the book in transit, but right now BG3 is all I know

There is no excuse
It was only like $5, but ty for the link
thanks! one last thing: how is this calculated for spells or attacks that hit more than once, like magic missile? if i have a +3 proficiency bonus, do ALL my missiles hit for 3 extra damage? does only one? is the damage averaged out between them?
Proficiency bonus rarely applies to damage.
oh, my bad, i mistook attack rolls and damage rolls x_x
And since Magic Missile doesn’t involve an attack roll or saving throw, it’s not used at all for that spell.
i re-read it, i've made that mistake a few times before
In your defense: there’s a lot to read.
There sure is
So I have a scorcerer who has a draconic bloodline and I have my race as a home brew dragon i am able to turn into a Dragonborn or human at will would this work out?
I need to know since if it does this will be a fun character
Your DM okay with this homebrew race?
We can't tell if it'll be "fun" because we don't know the game mechanics of this homebrew race. That and fun is subjective.
Anyway, any talk of homebrew should be in #homebrew . This channel is to help new players out on learning the rules of the game.
I haven’t joined a campaign yet
But the main point is I’m a dragon not the home brew
Then perhaps don't create a character using a homebrew race that's not approved.
Dragons aren't a playable race.
You’d still want to clear it with your DM. They might be a bit put off if you bring something like that in to the game before even asking what homebrew they allow, if any.
I know and I am planning to ask
But currently I haven’t joined my schools dnd stuff yet
But to answer your question: for my table I’d ask you to use the published options. Your DM may allow it.
Ok
If it’s a school club or larger community they may have their own set of rules or allowances to standardize play to that specific community. I’d recommend practicing making a few characters using just the published rules just in case.
so er what class can get a smooth run in solo campaigns?
Paladin is probably the best, but clerics are surprisingly strong solo too. Warlocks are really versatile. I also would think rangers, rogues, and bards would be good for a solo campaign
D&D is meant to be a group game of 3 to 5 players on average, not one DM and one player.
It's doable but adventures are not balanced for that.
Yeah, paladins and clerics are good at both combat and healing.
Classes aren't balanced too well either. I wouldn't think monks/barbarians/fighters would really work solo. Wizards and sorcerers are great but maybe a little too fragile/vulnerable once their resources are gone
You don't absolutely need healing but it would make a solo run WAY easier considering enemies won't have other targets for most of the combat you do find yourself in
Gotta keep alive somehow!
I would say anything can be played in a solo campaign. Because there is only one player-character for the DM to work with, there are plenty of things they can do to even out the odds such as giving you a magic item that makes up for some downfall in your kit, or an NPC that can help with things your PC isn't great at
Hexblade multiclass is also OP and you could abuse it with paladins or bards. CHA seems pretty important if there's nobody else to speak for you
That's such a good point, yeah. It depends on how much the DM is willing to cooperate
Hexblade? Sounds cool but I don't know what that is
That's a subclass for warlocks from Xanathar's guide to everything
How long do dnd campaigns last?
I'd guess a good 30% die within the first couple of sessions, another 40-50% last a year or so, and the rest go on for longer than that
Fizzling out early on is pretty common when groups don't have the committment or chemistry and it just means you get to look for another that'll suit you
I'm a bit confused about spells, it says in phb at first level I can choose 3 cantrips from cleric spells list, does that include 1st level spells or only level 0 ?
In my experience levels 1-13 hardcovers generally take 25 sessions or so to complete. That is a year of playing fornightly or 6 months of playing every week
Cantrips?
Cantrips are the lv0 spells
Yes
Lol
So a cleric don't start with cure wounds si ce it's lv 1 spell correct ?
Clerics actually know every spell on their list
You just have to prepare them, which s a little different
You pick a few cantrips to permanently know. Then you decide daily on which leveled spells you prepare
Adventures can last several sessions.
Campaigns can last one or more years. (My current campaign has been going on since Feb 2022 and will probably last at least another 2.5 years at the rate my players are going)
TV analogy for D&D
One-shot = made for tv movie
Adventure = a tv miniseries
Campaign = a multi-season tv series
Track of what?
Of sessions
So if my cleric has lv 1 spell slot resources, I can prepare any spell on lv1 list prior equal to my my wisdom modifier +cleric level. Correct ?
Yep
Perfect inunderstand it noe thank you everyone who assisted
how strictly are you expected to play to your character's stats? like, say you're a character with 10 int and 10 wis, so fairly average. if you pull up small details in-character because you took notes and you, the player, have access to small tidbits of knowledge that an average person might just let glide past them or forget entirely, at what point will the dm call shenanigans, if at all?
i see i see
One of my players plays a "stoner" dragonborn barbarian who is usually mellow until he rages. She plays him dumb even though he has a 12 Int. That's fine from the RP perspective. For Int skill checks I told her that he when he succeeds he just remembers tidbits and trivia talk to others (street smarts as opposed to book smart).
Is anyone willing to take in a newbie? I really wanna find a group to play with
#find-a-game is where you start your search.
What is total under hit dice represent
For monsters?
I put my hitndice I'm right, 1d8
But then above it there is a field that says total
On my example sheets there all 1
Okay great thank you
You have one hit die per level
The size of the dice is determined by class
They are used in short rest health recovery
How do I play DnD
Start by reading the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
What part of it is in question?
The mechanical process part, or the 'getting started with initiating a game' part?
The same way you start any game. Read the rules
help i need somebody to literally guide me through making my character sheet
Have you tried using DnDBeyond? It can help you through the process.
The basic rules also literally guide you through it at the start
ok
When a enemy is surprised, do all players take a Turn before the enemy ir just the person to attack first in intiative order
I may have asked this before, so apologies if I'm repeating myself, what helps people get into the mindspace, the mental connection/imagination to play?
There's no surprise round
Surprised is more like a... psuedo-condition. Basically, they can't take reactions until the end of their turn, and on their turn while surprised, they don't get to do anything, their turn just ends.
Okay so it's just 1 turn
So if something rolls a high initiative, they still don't act a turn, but they may be able to react to something slower on the uptake than them
So it's a free turn essentially?
each surprised thing is surprised on their turn
being Surprised means you can't take reactions or actions or move. Being surprised ends at the end of your turn.
So if I surprise a goblin but I miss with my attack, the goblin is then aware of me but not able to respond until the next turn
let's say the goblin rolls a higher initiative.
Surprised initiative start.
Goblin turn. Surprised, does nothing, turn ends. They gain reaction though.
Your turn, you do stuff. Goblin may be able to react.
Goblin turn again, now they can do stuff.
Not unaware, but in a state of shock
Alternatively, you roll higher initiative
You take your turn. The goblin can't use a reaction.
Goblin takes its turn, is surprised and does nothing, surprise ends and it now gets to use a reaction.
Your turn again, but now it can take a reaction
Okay greatbm thanks for clearing that up
Oh, if they roll higher initiative they can gain a reaction before your turn?
"If you're surprised, you can't move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can't take a reaction until that turn ends."
Yep.
Oh yeah I guess that's not super obvious
For example, a rogue with uncanny dodge rolls 23 initiative. The thugs get 15 initiative.
On the first turn, the surprised rogue doesn't do anything. But they're able to use uncanny dodge, a reaction, against a thug's attack, since they are no longer surprised.
Yea so iv learned about rangers and clerics character building and was just studying up on combat rules
Yea, that is new to me, I didn't know that
I kinda intuitively knew I just didn't think of it because it's a little rare
Ranger was easy to understand compared to spells lmao
This is basically all surprised natively does
Like a reaction to what? You who won initiative go first
So it would have to be to something in the environment like a trap they react to first
So effectively, you do get a round where everything surprised doesn't get to do anything
but
as things end their surprise they'll begin to be able to take reactions
Moving away from the enemy, usually, but also counterspell, and such, right?
Gob surprised, intke my first turn but I miss, goblin reaction. Would be my missed arrow right
Yeah but you don't use reaction for that
reaction to what?
It is now aware of me despite being surprised right ?
The enemy does
Reaction is usually in response as like a spellcast or save
A reaction is a specific term for doing something in response to another
If it rolled higher initiative
for example
You surprise a wizard. You go first. You cast a spell. The wizard cannot use their reaction to cast Counterspell due to being Surprised.
Wizard goes. They do nothing and end surprised.
You go. Cast a spell. Now the wizard can cast Counterspell.
or
You surprise a wizard. Wizard goes first. Ends surprised.
You go. You cast a spell. Wizard can cast counterspell.
Literally the definition of reaction, lol, sorry, had to
It's just extremely rare for being able to keyword react first isn't super relevant its gaining the first action
but yeah it's not like they can't be aware of stuff
And that surprised targets CANNOT react
I was just being facetious, ignore me, lol
So of I succeed stealth and attack goblin, goblin is surprised say I rolled higher initiative. Your saying the goblin would still not have noticed me until there turn.
