on the note of systems, i have one more question i wanted to ask for anyone who can answer: what does 'cast as ritual' mean? i've listened to some dnd youtubers before, and i've heard the phrase, but i've never gotten an explanation for what it means. is it a behavior of specific spells or something?
JoCat has some pretty good videos, but not sure how valid his videos would be for someone completely starting fresh. Pack Tactics does really good with explaining the math of game though.
As for rituals, I'm only an intermediate player, so someone more experienced can feel free to correctly but iirc, tldr from sorlock gaming, rituals spells are spells that can be cast over a longer period of time, think usually 10 minutes, but when doing it that way, they don't consume a spell slot, basically best imagined as your "Spell bullets."
So, if I want to cast say, unseen servant, I can either just blow one spell slot of first level right there, or spend time doing a ritual, and get it after some prep time, without using my spell slots.
i see. is that behavior exclusive to specific spells?
Correct. Ritual spells have their own classification, but generally in most cases, spells will consume spell slots not counting feats or other variables.
Unseen Servant can be used as a ritual but Fireball, yeah, no, lmao.
Ritual spells are generally best though if you have rest time though, since a 10 minute cast time mid combat would be 100 turns, lmao.
So, generally, they are used in times of rest and all that.
makes sense. thank you for the explanation
Np, may RNG be with you in future adventures.
quick question guys
Something I forgot to mention on double checking, ritual casting requres a feat or certain class feature, otherwise needs to be cast as normal. Could be wrong on that though.
as a lvl 3 cleric with 18 wis, do I have access to 7 prepared spells?
for example 4 lvl1 and 3 lvl2 or 5 lvl1 and 2 lvl2?
Why did they try to get you to change the class.race and backstory? What is your "commisioned character?
You may have applied to a game that isnt the right fit by the sounds of it, I have had players come to me with a sci fi character for a game set in the forgotten realms.
Honestly, dm was bit of a control freak, heck if I know, lmao. Comissioend character was small anime wolf girl who was a shadowlock.
What race were you trying to be? Shifter?
Tried to tell me to play a werewolf shifter, didn't want to be werewolf, wnated to be custom lineage, told me to play a melee warlock, not a melee build with 7 strength so said no, got pissed, then blocked me.
Thanks yeah I checked it but got confused as I have 18 wis and not sure how the +4 instead of +3 would affect it
if I would have 1 extra spell to prepare and can choose by myself where to attribute either lvl 2 or 1
Mfw my almost 3 years of hosting 5e is actually helpful, lmao.
Free feat? or just not like shifters?
Messing with class, unless its a class that isnt in the setting is unusual. Race is more common and backstory should be colloborative.
That was the strangest thing Titan, wasn't even about the feat, just wanted me to play a werewolf, lmao.
I would have thought werewolf shifter was more werewolfey than CL though.
That's the thing, wanted to play an anime wolfgirl, not a werewolf, lmao. Maybe not the best place to discuss here though as this is for the new blood wanting to learn, lol.
Fair.
Hey folks! This channel is to help folks new to D&D get started - please use #dnd-discussion or #character-discussion to continue your disucssion of characters as we want to leave this channel open for new-to-the-game questions. Thanks!
i looked it up, and apparently, you need to be either a full caster, an artificer, or a pact of the tome warlock, and otherwise you need the feat for ritual casting with 13+ in either int or wis
Yeah, sounds correct, ritual casting is kind of niche.
Kind of makes sense though, a creative ritual caster can do some funky things, like summoning multiple unseen servants. So, kind of makes sense only a few builds can do that stuff.
Ritual casting also takes time which means it's not useful in the midst of combat so taking it as a feat means your character is giving up an Attribute Skill Increase on a level up... so hard choices there.
Yeah, that's something to consider. RAW, you choose one feat OR one attribute score increase per 4 "Class levels," not total level.
speaking of that, are there any universally recommendable feats? like, ones that are usually never a bad idea to carry on x class setup?
What this means is that multi classers get their feats or important attribute score increases, or "ASI" slower, and makes those asi more important.
Good question for the #character-discussion channel
gotcha
is multiclassing something that's good to the point of making it so that you're seeing a significant power drop-off by not doing it? like, if i don't wanna do a hyper-optimized paladin/hexblade multiclass where i meticulously plan out every decision i make for my class, am i likely to have less fun with the game overall?
Multiclassing is also a subject better suited for #character-discussion
It's not something we would recommend new players use
i see, thanks
can you cast as many cantrips/spells as you want per actions per turn?
eg. if you have 2 actions per turn can you cast 2 cantrips that same turn?
yes, but with spells, the bonus action spell rule trips a lot of people up
if you cast any spell as a bonus action (be it naturally a bonus action, or the Quickened spell metamagic), the following restriction applies until the end of that turn:
"You cannot cast any spells other than a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action."
it's one cantrip and one bonus action leveled spell, right?
bonus action any spell
ah
even shillelagh
You can quickened spell wish and cast fire bolt, but not quickened spell firebolt and cast wish.
i see, i just have a dilemma because i want to multiclass on bladesinger being a psi warrior, and at level 6 of bladesinger i get a 2nd attack (which i already have on fighter at level 5) and i can also cast cantrips at this level, so i miss out on these features because i've got it all already
so the anti-synergy is screwing me at this level
Just did a 2-hour one-shot (well, it’s actually gonna be 2 shot since I wasn’t been able to DM any longer (lack of sleep kicked in) and I just called it a session. It is truly magnificent experience and I kinda feel like I am breaking through my social anxiety in a way. It was jittery at the beginning, but whenever I got the hand on it, I kinda started liking it. Plus it was really fun (for the wrong reasons, obviously), my one shot was kinda bizarre and that’s why I love DnD: legit anything can happen and it will feel organic (or cringe depending on how good your DM is on storytelling)
Either way, super cool experience and the players I’ve played with said that for the first time that was actually pretty good 👀
Still feeling kinda wobbly on DC territory as I sometimes fail to estimate how hard a certain task might be. But it is still a cool mechanic that allows you to shadowy manipulate how the game will go
im still struggling to get into a DnD session. i wouls suggest maybe have a session for only newcomers to try out. i never done a DnD before and would like to try just one session
Check out #looking-for-players
Suggest to who?
to anyone that sets up a DnD session
I’m sure there are some like that over in the channels you use #find-a-game for, but since DMs are also playing the game it’s gonna be up to whoever is running and organizing the game to decide what they want to run.
A new player only session can be, and has been done, but I personally like to have at least 2 experienced players alongside the new players because there’s a LOT of information being thrown at you as a player. alongside learning everything about your new character and abilities, you also have to learn the rules of the game and world, and learn the basics of roleplay, interactions, and combat, Having an experienced player alongside you as a new player, to show you what’s capable of being done, and to guide the party or influence the party decisions (on good or bad ideas) helps immensely with building you as a new player while not putting too much into you at once. Allows the experienced player to take some of that load off of you and even some off of the DM 😅
Um joining my first campaign and I have a few ideas. A spore druid, a water ganisi astral monk, and an aasimar phantom rogue. Are any of these too complex for a beginner
idk what those words mean but my DnD character is half human and half gnome
Martial classes are usually first choices for beginners due to less spell slots or complexities in their abilities.
I’m a rogue at heart 😎 lol. Rogues break games if you play them right.
The race itself doesn’t necessarily matter in terms of complexity unless you go with a custom lineage.
It’s mostly all about the class choices for complexity
Oh, sorry
Nah it’s okay. You didn’t know. There’s a LOT to learn lol.
I'm very excited I might be joining my first campaign
Hello
Hell yeah! Dnd is a game that only goes as far as you allow it. Expect a fun time and you’ll find that. Just do your best, take notes, and try to pay attention as much as you can. Also, have snacks available 😂
Bit scared because it's starting at level 5 cause I might be a fill-in
Oooo that’s where it gets more fun lol.
Still scary tho
Nah nah. Can be intimidating, but not scary. Just go in with an open mind and be ready to learn.
Biggest thing to learn is where stuff is located at on your character sheet. Learn that and the rest of it comes faster cus then it’s just reading lol
Thanks
I might go for a healing type of druid
Would that be enough healing for a party
It's always nice to have, but sometimes you can save more HP by doing things such as restraining or otherwise occupying the enemy - such as with an Entangle spell
I used to have a halflinf rogue it was the best for stealth
Halfling rogue is unbeatable in stealth.
Legit, got a level 20 rn with +17 in stealth checks
Well, not exactly, they're just a good pick for rogue anyway. Lightfoot synergizes with it twice over, and Lucky is always nice.
It's more about rogue being very good, not necessarily halfling giving innate bonuses to stealth
I'm between phantom rogue, storm barb and spore druid rn. Anyone got any idea to help me choose
For example, that level 20 with +17
A rogue will typically want to reach 20 dexterity (For a +5 mod) anyway, and take proficiency (+6) and expertise (+6 doubled to being +12) in stealth. That's +17, but they also get Reliable Talent, meaning they roll a minimum of 10 on the d20 for ability checks using skills they're proficient in. Making their true minimum, 27. That's just rogue being cracked
Rogues just be fun, and game breaking lol
Rogues are fun, Phantom is cool. Spore druid and Storm barb both feel kind of weak in my personal opinion, but they can still be very nice for flavor
Rogue is just cracked under someone who knows how to trick their pony
If it’s your first time playing, go with what’s fun. Don’t worry about min maxing.
I mainly wanna help my team
Druid is good at that yes
Rogues are “selfish” but played correctly, can help the team immensely
Druids are fun as well if you like to turn into shit and be creative
They have a good amount of unique spells, and many are effects basically unique to druid as a whole, such as transport via plants, a 6th level spell only on the Druid list, meaning... Basically only a 14th level bard can get that, otherwise.
I'm a bit worried about the then into shit thinf
Nah that’s the fun part lol. You’ll definitely have to find out if your DM is by the rules for druid wild shaping though.
I mean I'm worried it's too much for a beginner
The spells should be okay, it's just Wildshape that has... a bunch of kerfuffle and exceptions and tweaks
hey what is the best class/subclass for a summoner character that summons animals?
Druid, Circle of the Shepherd.
Do spore druids wild shape often?
At 6th, Beasts and Fey you summon or create via spell get more HP per hit die and their attacks count as magic, at 10th your totem (from 2nd level) heals them each round, and at 14th you get an instant 9th level Conjure Animals (so, 4 CR2) when you're downed to protect you.
Like would it be every fight?
You can summon like 70 velociraptors at level 8 😂
No more or less than any druid that isn't circle of the moon
Summoning is banned for one of my players because of the shenanigans he does ☹️
Dreams, Spores, Stars, Land, Shepherd, Wildfire, and third-party TCSR's Circle of the Blighted, all use wildshape specifically as much as each other, being... they could use it or not. Moon though focuses on Wildshape, hard.
thanks Shepherd (Druid) seems what I what I want to go for
Think I might be a spore druids but mainly use my wild shape charge for the necrotic spores
Hell yeah.
And even if you don’t enjoy it, speak to your DM about changing it after the session is over. Most DMs I’ve known are more than willing to work with players to make the game more enjoyable
Gnome power!
Movement ain’t everything
Halflings move 25ft and still are the best for a rogue most of the time.
What about my spore clouds?
What about them?
People could outrun me
Use it defensively then if that’s what the DM has the NPCs do
“If you wanna hurt me, you gotta come to my area”
There’s always another side to the coin lol
You want to play a gnome, they have another features instead of that movement.
What do you mean
They have advantage on all Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saves against magic.
Is that good?
Yes, that protects you against some enemy attacks.
Oh
You are overthinking this lol
For example, spells that frighten, charm, banish, or attack your mind or comprehension of reality, will target those
so you're more protected against them
Play with what you have and just see how you like it
You have to find your preferred play style, and the only way to do it is to play
Test some characters on one shots
are we allowed to have a semi-funny backstory of our character?
Sorry
DMs discretion
ok
Some like to be serious. Others don’t care
It’s cool lol. Just try the game and see how you like it
My gnomes names gonna be Stunko McFungo
Awesome
I think it's funny
my gnome character mother is human and father is gnome
Maybe with the right spell
But a barb could probably burst it down without it if the DM allows it
absolutely no one:
me who knows nothing about dnd but still watches
i was going to put a gif but i am not allowed 😦
Wouldn't it count if it was within my area of spores
Keep on taking d4 damage from rotting
Rot doesn’t work fast unless it’s an in the spell. Idk much about spells for rot tbh. If it states it just takes 1D4 damage from rotting, then a barbarian hitting it with his axe would do just as much and more
You can cast a necromancy cantrip to rot the tree. But ask your DM first if they allow that.
You can look for others to play in #find-a-game
When a creature you can see moves into a space within 10 feet of you or starts its turn there, you can use your reaction to deal 1d4 necrotic damage to that creature unless it succeeds on a Constitution saving throw against your spell save DC.
A door is not a creature, so it would not be affected by the Halo of Spores.
ty didnt saw that chanel ^^
I’m like brand new to the game, like I’ve never played a game of dnd at all. Could anyone give me a run down of how to make characters and all? I’m trying to make one rn but I’m not understanding what wizard skills are or how spells work. And why do I have to pay to be a pirate? I just wanna be a swashbuckler 😔
Swashbuckler is a rogue subclass, and that subclass was published in the supplement book Xanathar’s Guide to everything, so yes you would need to pay to access that subclass. However, in D&D we have a saying: “Flavor is Free.” You don’t have to play as a swashbuckler to be a pirate. You can talk like a pirate, act like a pirate, and have the backstory of a pirate no matter what class or subclass you are playing. Game mechanics don’t decide how you are or are not allowed to role play

The steps for making a character are described in the first few chapters of the Basic Rules, linked above. Handbooker Helper and WASD20 on YouTube have good explainer videos if you want more bite-sized coverage of the different game elements.
And of course, you can ask any questions you have here in this channel. You’ll get a lot better results if you ask specific questions though. It’s a lot easier for someone to explain what a specific ability score does or what your proficiency bonus means than it is to try to guide you through the entire process of making a character
Lol yeah you’re right haha
I’m just trying to get into the game but everything looks so confusing but it also looks like I could have lots of fun
I wanted to be a warforged artificer. I had to find the DM with the right books to share with me in order to make it.
Idk what a warforged artificer is but I think I get your point lol
A robot tinker
Oh that’s cool
I paid 2 bucks to make a minotaur
Warforged are a race of Robotic people, and Artificer is a class the specializes in the creation of magic items and tools
I’ve just always had a thing about pirates so I thought it would be fun to try and have my own little pirate character for my first character
That’s sick lmao
I actually played a pirate for my first character as well
I believe the only sites that have licenses for digital content are D&D Beyond and Roll20. Fantasy Grounds also has the materials for sale, but don't believe they have a website
Cantrips are “level 0” spells. You do not need to expend a spell slot to cast them, so you can use them as many times as you want
they are basically a caster’s basic attack
Oh cool
theyre not even necessarily attacks they can also just be useful little effects like the light spell that creates well light
So, I found a sealed dnd essentials kit for $6 at a local shop. Does it still hold up for new players?
Yes, the Essentials Kit is made for new players in mind.
does strength impact how much meelee attacks do
Nope - class features determine how many attacks one does in an attack action.
i mean how much damage they do
Ah yes - strength is typically used in calculating melee damage
Som features can change that to dexterity but in general, strength plays into melee damage calculations.
how does it though
base weapon damage + strength modifier = damage calculation
oh okay
So a shortsword does 1d6 damage + strength modifier
Spells can change things up - and often use the spellcaster's spellcasting attribute
i mean shelleagh
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/shillelagh
Yep - makes a wooden staff/club weapon use your spellcasting ability's modifier for calculating attacks/damage and the weapon does a base d8 damage and magical.
Pretty useful spell
Yeah if you want to dig into more of that character build stuff I'd recommend the #character-discussion channel.
Or #optimization if you like to focus on the math and opinions behind "optimized" builds.
Would a saving throw for a character being shot at (with a revolver) be constitution or dexterity (or something else)?
The DM would decide if a roll is needed and what kind of roll.
Typically DEX save is for dodging damage and CON save would be for enduring the damage.
Still very new to DMing so that helps a lot, ty!!
hey I'm new to dnd I'm looking to learn, I'm still making a character hope I could join some of you if you would let me
Check the LFG channels - see #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community. See #find-a-game for more info on how to find a game.
@echo kelp ok thx
Any kind of weapon use (including revolvers) is typically an attack roll, not a saving throw.
yeah, unless there are lots of shots to create a sort of suppressive fire, I recommend using attack rolls
Okay, I've always wanted to join a D&D campaign since I was a kid, but life has never allowed me the chance. Only within the past 5 years have I discovered Critical Role and reignited that passion. But before I go about blind asking for games, I thought it might be good to ask some people who are in the loop about some advice. I would like to join a small group that would do everything over text in a discord group, mostly because I'm not that comfortable using my real voice to act things out and would also like to pay as a girl character for my first character. (I also do writing as a hobby and am just more comfortable that way.) Though I'm not even sure if text only campaigns are even something people do. But if it is a thing (And this is where my biggest questions come from) the issue of honesty with dice rolls is a thing to worry about. So I'm looking for resources for online D&D campaigns I can have at the ready before starting looking for a game.
There’s definitely text-only games out there!
You might see them described as PBP or play-by-post games as well.
That is good to know!
They’re not quite as common, and they tend to progress at a lot slower rate than live games, but with the right group, they can be a lot of fun.
How do people handle the dice rolling aspect though?
There’s a lot of digital dice options out there.
The groups I’ve been in all used Avrae, right here on Discord.
https://avrae.io/
But there’s simpler options, too. D&D Beyond has built-in digital dice that record any rolls for the whole group to see.
I've actually never heard of Avrae, though I do know about DnD Beyond having dice and sending the rolls to others in the group. Though I thought you had to pay for DnD Beyond. Maybe a misunderstanding on my part though.
Anything in the Basic Rules is available for free, which is all you really need.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
And you can have up to six characters for free.
But they do sell all the official books as well, which includes stuff like additional character options.
DnDBeyond allows you to buy individual bits and pieces though so you don't have to buy a whole book (unless you want to).
Subscriptions just unlock unlimited character slots, or the Master Tier subscription which unlocks content sharing for up to 5 campaigns.
Or you can even just buy those character options individually. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Hmm, that seems like the rout to go. I'll look into it.
hi guys
Hey there!
Welcome!
im new to the world of D&D and started reading the general rules
i genuinely wanna learn more but im unsure of everything.
Got any specific questions you want to ask?
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
oooo ill definitely look into that! thank you
i dont really have open questions right now since im still reading, but theres so much to it that im afraid my tiny brain wont understand lol
You’ve gotta start somewhere lol. My favorite thing to learn about was the creatures
First off, amazing game
Welcome but I want to tell you that BG3's rules are not the same as 5E D&D rules.
Secondly though, it’s different from how DnD is, but it’s an amazing starting point for interest into DnD
The developers of BG3 changed the D&D rules to suit a video game.
i know, D&D was always interesting to me and i wanna know its actual Rules. BG3 just got the kick for me to join here haha
BG3 has sparked MASSIVE new interest in DnD again, but they don’t play anywhere near the same lol
i believe it can be much more fun playing actual DnD with other people, than playing a scripted game (its amazing either way, but actual DnD feel so limitless)
love Rogues btw
i always play Wizard in BG3, but Bard seems so fun
Scanlan Shorthalt.. lovely Character
Bards also break games. Notorious for never failing their skill checks too
But it’s not often I have a bard in any of my games tbh
id love to be one if youre down. but first i gotta get the rules down
just the general stuff for DnD to get a hold on, thats what i mean
thats awesome
But that’s not how I’d recommend learning lol
I reward creativity in my games. So I never really fully tell my players something can’t be done unless it’s game breaking or world breaking
I always allow them to try at least lol 😂
ah yes my bard accidentally killed the 10x larger dragon by smashing the instrument on its foot
The dragon lets out a loud Yelp as it picks up its foot in its hand bouncing around the cavern on one leg as if it had stubbed its toe. 😂
Pov: the bard knows they messed up big time
Eh not really
Yes so. Legit has a build that makes it so you never roll below 11 on anything ever
That build probably sacrifices a lot of everything else
It’s god at social encounters
That’s all it cares about lol
Eloquence bard can do that while not sacrificing anything else
Ello Im completely new to the topic of DnD and their rules mind starting me off? 😅
hi guys! i’m new to dnd although not to tabletop RPGS, and i’m the dungeon master for my party for the first time

thank you!!
btw what character sheet would you suggest? 5th edition?
The different editions don’t refer to character sheets per se, but to versions of the rules themselves.
Fifth edition is the current iteration of the game, and therefore the one most groups are playing.
But you should check with your DM to confirm which rules to use.
I see thanks for the help
This guide should help: https://howtogm.guide/
Some of the info is likely familiar if you've run other things, but you might still find some useful insight there.
thing is, u don't need to gather people to play, u can just boot-up whenever u can. u can quit when u want, and pick it back when u want. with people there might be days u don't want to play, or people can't play, or need to schedule, etc.
thats cool
I now exist here
*hello

I've been slowly getting into Warhammer 40K and this seems a bit similar
eh
I’ve watched the game played I jus haven’t had the chance to play
Not really
superficially they are similar
im literally never able to find a group
in that they are both ttrpgs
Warhammer isn’t even a ttrpg
ah i see
It’s a tabletop wargame
i just know a guy who has like a gazillion figures
Original dnd was based on a tabletop wargame called chainmail, but it’s evolved a lot from there
and spends all of his money on them
Hi...
hi
I can't find a group:/
There are a lot more DMs than players so finding a group can take some time. You check check out the channels here but also check out the DnD Beyond forums or other sites like Roll20 for games.
Every time. I join a group...dms act like jerks...
Sorry to hear that. My best advice is to keep looking and make sure there's always a session 0 to set expecations.
It honestly can take some time. Being able to find one and have it not have some jerks can honestly feel like a lottery draw at times. I've maybe found 3 groups of chill people over the last 3 years, and as of my roll20 ad of 2 months, had to reject like 10 DM's and 2 that made it to session 0 were control freaks.
As samo suggested, best advice is to cast a wide net in multiple places with ads and try your best to be patient.
Do you play online or in person?
I get so tired of people thinking "oh we MUST have a perfect group! We have x class already!"
Online@calm sonnet
DM me
Can anyone help me with mob control? I kinda would like to understand how the controlling works with attacks and such
What do you mean?
Like, I always try to use !a, but it shows my characters (as if I’m a player) actions instead of the one I am controlling in the combat (like Iron Golem etc)
Hows Roll20?
For help with avrae use #ddb-avrae-help
It’s useful
Never used it, but it might be good? 🤔
mostly just looking for a way to play dnd with others online dont care what it is so long as i can play
Have a look in our #find-a-game channels
Thanks ill do that
You can find a bunch of online games there
Hi, I’m a newcomer but dont know where to start , any suggestion?
Have a read of the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
Where can I find them? I am still learning to use discord
Are you on mobile or desktop?
Not sure if its the same on all mobile devices but if you swipe left and look up right itll say pins
then theres links to the new players guide which i need to look at myself
I’m on an iPad

Wish i pursued this sooner
No game has filled my thirst for dungeons yet
ive been marked for death
yes
Guess ill start with learning how character creation works
dnd beyond
Hoping to make a priest of some kind with 3 specialties
- divine striking the crap out of undead
- healing
- abjuration mostly for protective spells
They get some good abjuration spells
Id imagine
Peace domain cleric is the most defensive one
“Peace domain cleric” ill have to look into that
Oh sanctuary off the bat yea this is what im looking for
The level 6 feature also gives defensive stuff
Might i ask how components work?
Are those just for the less experienced or is that for any who wish to cast the spell
They're a necessary component to cast it, just like many need a Verbal component
They come in two 'categories'
If the component is either Consumed by the spell, has a minimum Cost listed, or has both of them, you cannot replace it with a focus and need to provide that material component.
If it's just 'a piece of wool' then sure you can replace it, if it has no cost or consumption.
a component pouch or a focus of an appropriate kind for your spellcasting class will be all you need for a vast majority of spells
just look out for spells that have an M and list it as having a cost or being consumed by the spell.
Yea like warding bond
Plat rings required to cost 50gp each
i see now this isn’t as troublesome as i thought itd be
Thought that since they needed components theyd always absorb them
spellcasters often end up being confusing for newcomers yeah
It's just a matter of, if you lose all your stuff, you can't cast a few of the more potent spells
As such, you might find many spells simply being more powerful than others of the same level, but requiring special components.
Really cool spell system
I wish I could find a group but people keep being jerks...
Especially the higher level spells
absorbs high value items for table turning spell
Really puts weight behind casting spells
what about material components that dont have specified costs? like for example the '50g each' is specified for the rings on warding bond, but the bless spell has a component of 'a sprinkling of holy water' that isn't specified in cost. would it just be assumed you probably have the component on you in that case, or?
Probably right?
Now holy water is weird, where the rules became a bit jank
Holy Water is an explicitly listed piece of adventuring gear, listed at 25gp. The Ceremony spell also costs 25gp to cast, and can produce Holy Water.
i see, i see
Breaks even, no profit.
But, bless says a sprinkling, not a vial. So since it's not the equipment it seems to be removed enough that it's its own flavor thing, not a monetary requirement, I believe, but take this with the red sea of salt
How does one measure a sprinkling
i guess that makes sense? it sounds like you'd still need the component but how much of a vial 'a sprinkling' would use seems kinda vague
Need to maximize my holy water game
Because it doesn’t have a listed cost you can use a component pouch or focus to replace it
I already love the component pouch and i havent even used it
if you were really maximizing your holy water game, you'd be using one of those water pulse rifles to fire holy water bullets at your allies instead of sprinkling people with it
Facts
i see i see
but you need the specific item for ones that DO have a gold cost, yeah?
For stuff like this id imagine so (believe he mentioned that the specific item is required if it has a specific gold cost)
yes very much so
i am learning
can a spellcasting focus replace the material requirement of a spell?
i never knew jewelry shopping could be so strategically sound
"Casting some spells requires particular objects, specified in parentheses in the component entry. A character can use a component pouch or a spellcasting focus (found in “Equipment”) in place of the components specified for a spell. But if a cost is indicated for a component, a character must have that specific component before he or she can cast the spell.
If a spell states that a material component is consumed by the spell, the caster must provide this component for each casting of the spell. A spellcaster must have a hand free to access a spell's material components -- or to hold a spellcasting focus -- but it can be the same hand that he or she uses to perform somatic components."
got it thanks, bookeeping my spell materials sounds like a pain lol
You don’t need to generally
component pouch betrays me on consumption
(your component pouch has / your focus replaces) - anything that doesn't have a cost or consumption
There’s only a few spells you’ll likely be casting that have costly components
wait, so the rules say you need a hand free for material and somatic components. are sword & board users just SOL for spellcasting, then?
It’s not often that a sword and board user will be able to cast spells
Even then, if you’re a Paladin or cleric you can put your holy symbol focus on your shield
Clerics and paladins have exception with their holy emblems that can be on a tabard/shield.
And the war caster feat lets you perform somatic components using a hand that is holding a shield or weapon
i see i see. what about two handed weapons, ex. a paladin with a polearm or greatsword?
You can be holding the weapon in one hand when you aren’t attacking with it
So therefore if you use a component pouch you’ll be fine
does it have to be on their hand/shield? cant they fashion it into a necklace (kinda like a crucifix)?
ah, makes sense
If a spell has S, you need an empty hand.
If a spell has M, you need a free hand to access the M.
If a spell has S and M, you can use the one hand for both the S and M at once.
Hands needed for spellcasting is a complicated topic
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#OtherAdventuringGear
**Holy Symbol. **A holy symbol is a representation of a god or pantheon. It might be an amulet depicting a symbol representing a deity, the same symbol carefully engraved or inlaid as an emblem on a shield, or a tiny box holding a fragment of a sacred relic. A cleric or paladin can use a holy symbol as a spellcasting focus. To use the symbol in this way, the caster must hold it in hand, wear it visibly, or bear it on a shield.
are there any spells with somatic components that need two hands to cast, or is it only ever going to be one hand needed to be free?
Somatic components only ever need one hand
i see, thank you
since it says wear it visibly then you can wear it like a necklace right? leaving both hands free?
The flavour for burning hands says you put both hands together , but per the rules you only need one hand
Yeah
nice
Just created my very first character and would love to play sometime but I have 0 idea how
Or friends that play
Check out #find-a-game
You can fulfill somatic requirements with the hand the material be in?
didnt mean to ping woops
Yep
neat neat
What I said, yes
if it has both
i see
so if you are a wizard using a wand and, idk, holding on for dear life on a rope
and want to cast a spell with no M but having S
you need to either drop your wand, put it away, or you can't cast it.
but if the spell had S and M components, you could use the wand as a focus to replace the listed M, doing it both with one hand.
But if the spell has specific M, costly or consumed or both, you still need to put the wand away
fall > both hands free > cast feather fall > profit
would be funny if the dm ask you to roll acrobatic to cast that spell
lol
but if the material is a uh
Consumption or Value required material then it wont work ok i think i get it now
Not terribly hard to understand good way of making it pretty easy to digest
Material components that are consumed and/or have gold value is essentially a gameplay mechanic to restrict players "spamming" the spell without paying a price.
Is focus something all spellcasters just have?
For examle, not every shopkeeper will have diamond required to cast Raise Dead. So the PCs will have to search for diamonds and save them for an emergency.
Ye
Yes, spellcasters all can use a focus in lieu of spell component pouch.
I see neat
does that includes half caster like ranger?
Each class will say what kind of focus they use.
ill need to take a look at this cos i have an idea for a rogue/ranger character
question, do you need to find these things or are you given the opportunity to start a campaign with one? like, say you were a paladin or a cleric, is it just kind of assumed that as part of being those things you'd probably have some kind of symbol of your deity on your person?
When you create your character you have starting equipment. Check the free Basic Rules on each class.
alright, thanks
cleric get one from the start
wizard and warlock too i think
dunno about others
Cleric Holy Symbol op
One thing im not certain of rn
Whats the cost of using a focus instead of just a component pouch or the item required when possible?
Other than having to hold the item in most cases
The costs is all in the Basic Rules' equipment section.
When you choose your starting equipment you can choose a focus or a component pouch.
ah i see how it works now
Just had a misconception on how focuses work but i figured it out
Think the wands in Harry Potter.
Ye
yeah, every spell from harry potter would have V, S, M
and then for the super super powerful people, they can cast without wands sometimes
As an example
Dumbledore and uh
Apparition
or literally anyone who can use apparition now thinking about it
think i named the one spell that doesnt use a wand unless it does and my memory is wonky
Thanks for the help
Subtle spell lol
yeah isnt everyone in hp kinda a sorcerer anyway since having magic is a birth thing
How do I post in the Looking for DM chat?
Using #find-a-game and its rules
How is best to start ? After create a character? Look for dm or players?
Once you have a basic understanding of the rules and have preferably made a practice character or two, you can start looking for a group to play with
as a player, you'd post in looking for DM
I’m trying to message un looking for dm channel but I can’t
Or reply to posts in #looking-for-players
You need to use the bot command as detailed in #find-a-game
the channel description says to go to find a game, and I said use #find-a-game beforehand too
Thanks I posted looking for dm
looking for someone to possibly be willing to teach me and my group how to play DnD because we are very confused on alot of things lol
Feel free to ask away here
You probably won't get someone outright joining a call to tutorial, but this chat will answer questions

ok thank you very much
Hello! I am new to DnD BG3 got me into it
Hi
Be aware BG3 has a lot of rule changes - and I mean it, I mean a lot of changes.
A lot of changes.
do you have a guide? to learn about DnD?

Start by reading the basic rules, which are linked in the pinned messages
question
it says v,s,m does it require all of this or just 1 of them? because ive been with 2 groups and one says you need at least 1 of them to cast and other says you need all of the components shown to cast
You need all. So if a spell is V, S, M that means it has Verbal, Somatic and Material components.
If you cannot do one of them (such as cannot provide verbal because you are in a zone of silence) you cannot cast the spell
but can that rule be change depending on what dm says? like the group that says at least 1 of them is required
Any rule can be changed by the DM
Sure, DM can change rules. But 'RAW' (rules as written) you need to be able to do all of a spells components to cast it. It may affect balance to change this and undermine certain powers like Sorcerer's subtle spells
But it's best not to assume what rules a DM might change going into a game
ty
And if you're the DM, it's best not to change a rule unless you understand the rule, why you're chaning the rule, and what impact that change will have
noted!
Raw means rules as writen and not just raw as in unflavoured
how does the dodge action work tbh
Yes?
What part of what the action says do you not understand
Good morning.
How does bleeding works?
On your turn you use your action to declare you are dodging. All attacks against you now have disadvantage and you have advantage on Dex saves
There are no general rules for bleeding
Bleeding isn't really a condition in 5e, so depends either on the edition or the specific ability/item/spell you are using. Do you have any more context?
Why did you ping someone to explain to them what RAW means when they themselves explained the term in the comment you're replying to
I was just surprised I misunderstood what raw means I don't understand the attitude
No attitude, just confusion
As it seemed like you were explaining something to someone who already understood the term
Ohhh so..
Usually I just told my players something like: you are bleeding you get 1D2 of damage every round intill you heal yourself or a teammate help you heal
And same with poison and things like that
That'd be a house rule and beyond the scope of this channel
#dm-discussion or #homebrew would be a better place to get feedback on such a rule
NP, but yes if you see 'RAW' used here, especially in all caps, it means 'Rules as Written'. 'RAI' might also be used that means 'Rules as Intended'. They're terms used when discussing rules to note when someone is discussing them as hard rules exactly as written, or when discussing what the designers intended to mean.
Ohh ok, sorry
I am new to this so I don't really understand where to ask what, but thx a lot 😁
oh ok ty
i've often heard from friends who play a lot that healing in dnd is weak, and is usually only used for utility like reviving an unconscious ally. how does this work? wouldnt an enemy just knock them right back down?
That enemy isn't guaranteed to hit, while healing doesn't require an attack roll
The thinking is that 1) the PC may get another turn, which could be important in terms of the overall flow of battle and/or 2) it resets their death saving throws, so even if they go unconscious again, they have to restart their fails/successes, which can be very useful if they were close to permanently dying.
that makes sense, thanks for the explanation
In order for healing to be useful, you need to heal more in 1 spell than an enemy deals in 1 attack. Otherwise, you are just wasting time. Unless you are burning ridiculously high level spell slots, enemies will always outpace you. Using your healing to bring someone up from 0 at least guarantees that it does something useful
I feel like this could quickly go beyond the scope of 'Newcomers' level.
Agreed. I think that's the end of the conversation, though. Otherwise, continuing it would be best in #dnd-discussion since it's kind of generalist.
Hi, is there another way to find a game? No one is a looking
You've looked through #looking-for-players?
spread your net wide and ask in different discords or reddit or dnd beyond or whatever other means you have to reach out or even irl
Hello! Im brand new to the game, and im a little overwhelmed with creating a character sheet. I'm looking through the players handbook rn but im not quite sure which page I should go to?
Chapter 1 'Step-by-step characters' can help break it down. There's also videos that can help explain things like 'handbooker helper'
Sup DnD'ers
Ah okay, thank you!
You can also use sites like dndbeyond that can help sum up some of your options to make chocies easier- it looks like a lot of reading, but if you focus just on the one character you want to make (race and class) it helps cut down the reading a lot.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes can help sum up and navigate classes
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races does the same for races.
And of course you can ask questions here when stuck!
Tysm! I really appreciate it
Note that not all those classes and races will be in the PHB (for example it has some races from another book 'Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse'), and you'll have extra options that won't be in the basic rules which is the ones you can access for free on dndbeyond.
hey, I've been into DnD for over 2 years now and have created dozens of characters but I've never been able to find a group that sticks (and have never completed a campaign). Just looking for advice on how to find the right group, specifically for UK times (I notice a lot of users aren't in this time zone).
You have to cast a wide net. My best advice is to check out the threads on this server but also take a look at other sites and D&DBeyond and Roll20. I know Roll20 will let you filter by timezone which can be helpful in screening out game times that wouldn't work for you.~~ I think Foundry may also have LFG forums but I'm not sure.~~ Foundry doesn't have forums from what I can see.
Thanks for the advice, I'll see what I can find on Roll20 and beyond 👍
Finding a group can be a lot like online dating.
You need to put yourself out there and try to meet many people but can't expect high commitment from the get go- you need to find the people you like. Westmarches, Adventure league and oneshots can be a great low commitment way to meet up with people and see if you click.
When you and other players get along and find new games you can invite each other along. Meet DMs you like or DM your own game. Slowly you'll network and friends will invite others they vouch for and eventually you'll end up with a forever group online.
In person it's more like finding a local group and making that relationship work with a lot of communication and compromises >.>
Have you guys run the waterdeep dragon heist?
Are you asking as player or as a DM?
I'm asking as a player, tried my hand in DMing and it did NOT work haha
I think OMYAC was asking Chef
sry my bad
I have. It’s a lot of fun but it’s definitely a different campaign from the other official ones
Because if a DM, there are channels here that can help a new DM discuss an adventure. If a player, that question is better directed to his DM.
And no spoilers should be discussed in this channel.
I’m starting it tonight. I’m doing my last read through band notes. It’s gonna be a ball
hi guys
currently making a character and was looking through some options on what i would like to go for.
previous chars where just some random test ones for 2 test campaigns we did.
I noticed on one of the lv20 character sheats that he has 3 passive senses instead of just one (as indicated on the blank character sheat i have).
How is that?
What do you mean? are you talking about Investigation, Perception, and Insight?
I tried to collect as many options I could for this Looking for Group/Game guide: #third-party-tools-archive message
could you explain this to me a bit more?
yes
Oh, thats pretty much just a base of 10 + Your character's bonus for that skill
the blank one i have only says perception but not investigation and insight
Ah
thats what i'm confused about
Well, paper based can only put so much on their sheets
It’s a great campaign. Plays differently from the others I’ve ran but it’s a lot of fun still for everybody involved
and they might have a custom character sheet they or someone else made online.
its a digital one from our DM
he just downloaded it from dnd beyond i think
yeah
Print out from Dnd beyond doesn’t always work
the downloaded print from DNDBeyond is different from the other papaer based ones
ah i see
Last time I played paper, the wizards spells didn’t print at all. Would just be a blank page every time
couldnt you technically prevent that if you make a screenshot and print that?
so in case we need those stats we just wing it i suppose, since the pdf doesnt mention it
Its really kind of what I’ve envisioned a campaign to be. Just complex enough, lots of things to do, and just pandemonium
You could yeah. Do the ol Windows+Shift+S
Checked out what clerics domain of peace has to offer and wow
I like everything though i do wish there was a larger barrier to cover multiple people
But given how much it has to offer its more than made up for
Can somebody tell me if i'm doing this character sheet right? I haven't finished it yet, but before a progress I want to make sure the existing information is correct
file:///C:/Users/stell/Downloads/Laikov.pdf
(Also let me know if the link works, idk how to exactly post it from my computer)
That won’t work
I can tell you that already. That’s not a link anybody can click on here. You just copied the file path on your computer friend
You can take the PDF, copy it to a google doc and share the google doc link
Just ensure that when you share it, make it so nobody can edit it. Only view
ahhhh thats smart, thank you
I sometimes know things
Yeah I think that should work. If anyone can let me know if im doing this right- that would be of big help 🙏
Where do I go to find D&D games?
i believe #find-a-game
I can “see” it but it’s really not rendering well for me. Might be because I’m on mobile though rn
Idk. I can’t tell from mobile
Is that for an online campaign you’re in?
aight some things are going well but some things have a lot of issues
im trying to create a character sheet first
oh will my background give me a dexterity modifer?
and as a barbarian your ac is your constitution modifier + your dex modifier +10
no your dex mod is determined by your dexterity score
your modifier is equal to you score minus 10 divided by 2
so your constitution mod is already wrong
oh shoot
it should be 14-10 so 4 divided by 2 so 2
your strenght is correct though as it is rounded down
so constiution is 2?
well a +2 would be more accurate
you round down
ohh so +1?
mhm
im reallyyyy bad at math ngl
thats why you wanna not really have uneven scores
theres a lot of math in dnd but the math is really easy so i hope it will be fine
usually simple addition or subtraction or division by 2
arithmetic?
i think it is called
so i have +1 i think as a racial feature from being half-orc in constitution
If you have a calculator it’s a lifesaver
do i put that in my modifier?
no in your score
I fr just use the calculator on my phone, it’s easier than in my head
wouldnt that be really slow though having to type in everything
like theres a lot of dice rolls and stuff involved in dnd lol thats a lot of typing
It works for me personally. I’m fast at typing that stuff in.
fairs
i am confusing myself big time ahhh
you started pretty wel with proficiencies and stuff
yeah, im trying to refrence the handbook as well as premade sheets to make my own
ok so have you got all your modifiers and scores in place??
umm give me a sec
if my wisdom is 10- do i not have a modifier? or will it be negative?
ah okay thats what i thought
so tell me if this is right
strength 15 with a modifier of +2
dexterity 13 with a modifer of +1
constitution 15 with a modifier of +2
intelligence 12 with a modifier of +4
wisdom 10 with no modifier
charisma 8 with a modifer of -1
uhh int is +1
intelligence?
ye
mhm
sorry if im being annoying btw i am just overthinking a lot of things
nah youre cool lol
Hallo
so my initative will therefore be 1?
oh
initiative determines when you act on a round high initiative is you act first low initiatve is you actlast
so 1 would mean i would most likely act last?
no it is above average actually
yeap
oh dope
10 is the average score
but thats for a commoner of course
so your adventuring buddies might be even faster
but expect to be roughly in the middle of combat on average
ahhh okay
alrighty
just copy the modifiers over except for the ones you have proficiency in
so dexterity modifier is +1 so dexterity saving throw is +1 as well
like that
except for your saving throws that you are proficient in
so for the ones that you are proficient in just do the modifier +your proficiency bonus
correct
so for your armor class
read what unarmored defense says and then figure it out from there
yall making characters
ye
mhm basically
it says 10+ my dexterity mod and constitution mod
mhm
so 13?
yep
oh yay
when you are wearing armor it will of course be different
are yu making a barbarian
but if you are unarmored that is what it would be
yes
yeah im making an half-orc barbarian
you should be a totem barbarian they are really cool
isnt that a later stage of barbarian?
dont worry about thatfor now but yes
i read a little on that, they do sound cool
so in attacks i put weapons right?
where would i get the info on the weapons i have
you can look it up
a weapon has 2 distinct features usually its attack modifier and its damage modifier
what weapon are you gonna use
the attack modifier means the chance to hit the enemy and the damage means the amount of damage you will deal when you hit
barbarians come with a greataxe, 2 handaxes and four javelins according to the player handbook
yeah but you can use what weapons you want if you are proficient
well i do like axes
ok so for all of those weapons you have an attack modifier of your strength modifier + your proficiency bonus
which would be 4
so put that for atk bonus with those weapons
okay got it
so d14?
no
d12+ strength mod
the way this works is
you roll a d12 (a twelve sided die) and then add your str
no you do that when you attack
every attack does a different amount of damage because of the dice rol
so i just write down in the box d12 +2
yep
for a javelin and handaxe you do a d6+ str
ooo
they can but it is not a common occurance (there is no weapon durability)
oh sweet
If a weapon uses ammunition, like a Bow, then after the battle is over you can recover half of the ammuntion you spent, and the other half is considered to be broken. As for normal weapons like a sword or a spear, all objects in this game have an HP value, and they are destroyed if you reduce their HP to 0, but attacking with a weapon does not reduce its HP at all, and in combat nothing will typically affect your weapons or armor. Most spells and other abilities that affect objects say "unless that object is being worn or carried."
I have a homebrew mechanic of critical failure with weapons in my campaigns. Nat 1 and you drop the weapon or it breaks or whatever.
But that’s not normal lol
Not to criticize how you and your players have fun, but most people will tell you that's actually a really bad idea to have a mechanic like that
Fair enough. My guys enjoy the risk to it 🤷♂️ cus theyre all experienced players
The main issue with Critical Fail mechanics is that people already widely agree that spellcasters are significantly stronger than martial characters, and this mechanic makes that gap even wider. A spellcaster doesn't need to roll to attack, so they can never get a critical fail. It only punishes people that use weapons
Not to mention, it can be demoralizing, because its punishing someone even further on top of the fact that they missed their attack
We have a mechanic that allows them to fail as well to even it out
Like I said, I don’t want to criticize how you and your table have fun, but since this is a channel for newcomers I want to make it clear to others that this is not typical to how the game is played
Perhaps move this to #dnd-discussion so this won't confuse new players to D&D?
what would i need to do to get started playing dnd?
dam🫡
gl soldier
An internet connection can get you pretty much everything you need for free
even friends?
the true friends are the characters we make before we play DnD
you make multiple?
uh yes
i thought it was only if ur main died
usually turn them into NPCs anyway
o
Oh no, my secret (I don't have a life) has been revealed!
But like, if i come up with a character idea i like, i immortalize it as a character
oh ok
what does dm mean?
Dungeon Master
oh like the controller?
well, yes, but more like the game system/narrator
oh ok
wait whats character creation like/ what do the classes do?
If only
well, if you really want a more detailed preview, try signing up for DNDBeyond
whats that

oh, a link'
would my irl age be a problem if i want to find a group of people to play with
depends on how old (or young) you are
i second this
Please do not share your irl age on this server when applying for a game
Only way i could see an issue, is if the group you’re joining is all older and don’t want younger players, or it’s like, a group of kids with a dad DMing
That’s the only way I could see age being an issue imo
i’d first look for groups you’re interested in and, after you feel comfortable joining one, just ask if there’s any kind of content limitations or age expectations
i’m sure most people would be very upfront about it
im also very new and dont know some stuff but i did go buy two books
player hand book
and something else
found it
xanathars guide to everything
both were recommended to me by someone who had been dming for a long time

is there a limit to reactions per round?
one per round
^
damn
to be specific, around your turn
I keep getting confused with prepared spells as a wizard. The prepared spells are rounded down with the ability modifier + half class level?
My case is, I am level 3 with 19int. Does that mean that I can prepare 5 spells only?
7 spells
no (but yes to oni), level plus intelligence modifier
You prepare the list of wizard spells that are available for you to cast. To do so, choose a number of wizard spells from your spellbook equal to your Intelligence modifier + your wizard level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
wizard spell + your INT mod
so as a level 3 with +4 intelligence modifier, you do indeed get 7 spells
Thanks guys thats big
aye
Hello!
each class gets specific weapon proficiencies, and if you arent proficient in a weapon its gonna be a lot weaker for you
and can you only use weapons on the list at dnd beyond?
in the character creator thingy
you get to pick a weapon
in starting equipment?
The only "restriction" is
if you're proficient or not
and all that weapon proficiency innately determines, is adding your proficiency bonus to the attack rolls with that weapon.
And the PHB lists the weapons of the game.
I think an adventure has the yklwa, and dragonlance had a couple(?) (at least 1) strange double-weapon
could i create a eapon of my own
or is that a dm to dm thing
you can reflavour an existing weapon as a different weapon
so could i make a 2 handed sickle?
otherwise its dm dependant and i wouldnt recommend it
by reflavour i mean keep the same stats, but change the appearance
aw
aight
there's no rules for that, that's more of a DM thing. That, and there's no method to make new base items on DNDBeyond as a user.
so if you wanted a two handed sickle, you could take a glaive and call it a two handed sickle
But you could do things such as reflavouring a Glaive, a reach, 1d10, slashing weapon, into a Scythe. Mechanically, it's a Glaive, functionally identical to a Glaive, but it's a cool scythe yknow
thats like
exactly what i was aiming for
Flavor is free, mechanics aren't
wait wdym 1d10?
and whats a reach
it does 1d10 damage
a glaive does 1d10 slashing damage on a hit
it also has the reach property, meaning you can attack something 10 feet away
reach gives it longer range
oh
reach*
Range and Reach are two very specific terms for weapons. Ranged weapons uses Range, Melee uses Reach.
Anyone looking for players?
im using natural language
have a look in #looking-for-players
How much knowledge should i absorb before i try and find a game?
how your character works and interacts with the game as far as your sheet determines
Makes sense
So if you've got spells, that spells do exactly as they say, how range, casting time, components, targeting, spell slots, etc all work
generally, how saves and attacks work, AC, saving throws, how much of what you can do
Yea ill do that
I memorized my spells so far i believe
And how they work and how to adhere to their costs
you don't need to memorize them, really
for example, I know that Imprisonment is a high level spell, maybe 8th, requiring a costly component that needs to be made specifically in mind for the target, and it has multiple options, each needing the material component to be in a specific design.
So I know what it is and can look up the spell for the specifics
Jeez, fortunately most of what im casting isnt too hard to satisfy the requirements
And spells don't generally have costs beyond spell slots for the most part
Some have a 'barrier for entry' being a costly component, some also consume their component each time the spell is cast
but burning hands, fireball, ice knife, they're all simple 'you cast it' spells
First 4 chapters of the basic rules should do good
I made a couple a long time ago when i was young and stupid…er so hopefully i remember something from that
Ye ima give those a read now
Hey I’m new to dnd and was wondering if I could have some pointers or some tips about how to play or anything really wanted to get in this game for about 10 years but really never knew anyone that would play with me
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
ok thanks alot
i wonder if i should just buy digital books or physical as well
seems to be the same price for most physically and digitally but then again digital is probably more convenient
Depends on your needs and budget.
D&D Beyond has seasonal sales and you can buy individual things like playable races/classes/feat/spells rather than the entire book.
I own most of the 5E physical books so I don't need to rebuy them all on D&D Beyond, just the races/class for my players.
compendium only would be cheaper
might just go digital for easy searchability + the fact that i wouldnt have to buy players handbook when its already free online
Usually on Black Friday most of the digital books are $19.99.
oh yea about those seasonal holidays are there any soon?
You missed the back-to-school sale last month.
Hello I have a question. So I'm.brand new to dnd, bought starter set essentials kit and players handbook.been dabbling in creating characters I have created a ranger and got to the point of Equipment, I added the items I get from my class. Do I then also add all profiencies languages and Equipment from my backstory to?
yes
OK so what happens when profiecy skills are the same
Like I already have survival but outlander gives it me to
you can pick another prof. from your background or your class
proficiencies dont stack
I am a Circle of Shepherd Druid, when I want to summon 8 creatures, should I just hand a normal statblock to the dm, or should I make a modified version where the only difference is it has 8 hp spots to represent all 8 things being summoned?
OK so, I would need to choose. Different class or Background then? Or can I choose a different one because I have a duplicate,
This is a bit more than a newcomers question but the DM ultimately decides what gets summoned.
The DM should bring 8 creatures of their choice but you can agree to summon a specific creature.
They allow me to use reptile statblocks as my character is a lizardfolk and it is backstory and lore fitting, so I wanna be nice and make some statblock props they can use when I summon the things so they wont have to look into the book every time
a good way ive heard of doing it is to pick a set of animals the dm agrees with, then you can choose from that set when you summon them
Yeah that's basically what I did with them
Then I'd suggest asking the DM what they'd prefer. Work with them (and your group) to come up with something that works well and fits the group and kind of D&D game you're playing.
I specifically only summon reptiles since they're summoning the restless spirits of their tribe members (other lizardfolk)
Velociraptor is a great option imo.
Yeah, I'm making sure to not make it annoying and overpowered so I am going to roll between reptiles of the CR I choose basically, so sometimes I'll get velociraptors sometimes I'll get poisonous snake for example :3
question: i've heard that paladins get their power from their conviction and oath, and therefore they don't necessarily require a god. but paladins use holy symbols as their spellcasting focus, which is described as 'a symbol to a god or pantheon.' if a paladin doesn't pledge allegiance to a specific god, do they just not get a holy symbol, or are there substitutes they can use for a focus?
they use a holy symbol, afaik theres not really an explanation for it
its a holdover from previous editions where they did worship gods
just roll with it and reflavour as needed
i see i see
giant psnakes are really good too.
This might seem a little confusing since 5e doesn't separate flavor text from rules text, but you're definitely getting too caught up in the minutia of flavor, and treating it as a rule. Paladins are always allowed to use a holy symbol because the rules say they can. The flavor explanation is there, but flavor is just a suggestion or starting point. As long as you don't change the rules or mechanics, your character, items, spells, etc can look like and act like whatever you want
quick question, does a glaive have the finesse property or is it locked to strength?
heavy, two handed
reach
Glaive is a polearm with Heavy, Reach, and Two-Handed properties.
and reach
gotcha, thanks
idk im kinda just brainstorming rn
reading the rulebook
List of the weapons and their properties:

For drake warden, can you not attack with both yourself and your drake until level 5 when you get extra attack? Not sure on the wording in fizbans.
"It can move and use it's reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the dodge action unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action"
you use your bonus action to command it to attack
you can then use your action to make your own attacks
Ok so basically unlike a beastmaster pet the dragon actually can attack with myself pre level 5 since it's a bonus action?
yep
Beast master can do this too if you use the variant rules from Tasha’s cauldron of everything
oooh nice. thank you
The holy symbol can be used in place of an arcane focus or component pouch, both of which function similarly, and could be used by a non-religious paladin.
It may have been homebrew, but I think a few people suggest a symbol sufficiently significant to a paladin could be their holy symbol because it is holy to them: a lawful paladin might really like the scales of justice, etc.
The main reason for the interest in a paladin's holy symbol is: it can be painted on a shield.
how should i start getting into dnd? i’ve never played before and want to know how i can become a dm and such!

okay, thank you so so much!! 💕
This is a really practical breakdown of running the game: https://howtogm.guide
I’m a new player and want to get into DND because all of my friends are and I’m falling behind—even though I’m pretty into role playing too. Where should I begin?
Check the links above (or pinned in this channel).
What is the most forgettable race? I think Sea-Elf.
I wanna give some love to the less used races.
Humans.
I dont remember the last campaign Ive either played or DMd in that didn't have at least one human
how is this newcomer related?
real
I'm a newbie and I want to know what to play for my next campaign?
basing it solely off of other people's opinions of what's forgettable doesn't seem that related
For me, when I can't decide what to play I look to various media that I've recently consumed (books, tv series, movies, etc.). I take a character I enjoyed from it to use as a starting point but add a few variations in their personality so they're their own character
How do slings work? If I use a sling with magic stone is there any benefit? Do the magic stones deal more damage or go farther?
Can multiple magic stone be shot through the slingshot at once?
Isnt the range 60 ft when thrown, and 30 ft with a sling (or 120 for long range)
yeah the 120 long range is the benefit
Other than hurling small objects a further distance, wouldn't the point of using one over something else just be the stealth option?
can you only have a max of 20 levels distributed across multiple classes or does each one level on their own up to 20?
