and if I look up game store it gives me gamestop (cringe)
closest I can find is 21 min
There may not be a solution for your specific situation. We can only suggestion the options that exist
thats ok, tysm
Libraries or school clubs would be other possibilities.
hi hi! i have more questions!
is there a summarized list of combat rules (for dms who need it on the fly) about specific/easy to forget rules? liiiiike
- partial cover and 3quarters cover giving +2 and +5 to both AC and dex saves respectively
- if you cast a bonus action spell you can only cantrip or melee attack
- the massive damage rules
- the death save rules about the double fail and double success etc
- grappling rules
- opportunity attack rules
- difficult terrain rules
etc etc, other small, easy to miss rules that would be handy to have nearby!
i've tried googling and searching reddit but, i've come up empty
i figured i'd ask here before making my own sheet!
Googling ‘dnd cheat cheet’ or ‘dm cheat sheet’ does turn up some examples, but you may have better luck making your own so it has exactly the info you want on it.
tysm both of you! :D
"if you cast a bonus action spell you can only cantrip or melee attack" is misleading - if you cast a bonus action spell, the only other spells you can cast during that turn is 1 action casting time cantrips. It doesn't mean you can't make ranged attacks, nor lock you to cantrips or making melee attacks - (you could use the Dodge action for example)
Hello everyone, it is a pleasure to join this community... and that's all, I don't know what else to add to the presentation xd
Welcome
It's a pleasure, I had joined another dungeons and dragons community a long time ago but it seems they archived it, anyway I never did anything there so it doesn't matter much xd
So, due to my lack of experience... I don't know almost anything about the game apart from the basics, I've never played it in my life but I do feel like playing it, I just... well, I never had anyone to play it with 😥👍
Well, that's where my super uncomfortable presentation ends... it's 4 AM, let's see if I fall asleep or do something else.
Hi, I'm new to DnD, I've never played a game yet, but wants to learn and is interested. I usually draw and write stories and wants to explore this side of creating/gaming.
You also just joined today and had a better presentation than mine xd
Oh naw, everyone's presentation tells a little about themselves! There's no good or bad, just personality
Now it's 5 AM, South American time, specifically Argentina but it doesn't matter much now... and this is my bedtime for some reason xd
sleeeeeeep (attempts hypnosis) itssss goood for your heeeealth
For your good luck, I was already falling asleeeeeeepp... He falls half asleep half dead on the floor
Hello everyone. For a few years I was interested in dnd and today got a starter set and joined this discord
Welcome, it's a pleasure to have you, now if you'll excuse me, I'm sleepy and I can fall asleep at any second 💀👍
Bruh💀
Hi, all. I
Hi, all. I've played before in person twice. Looking for a group to play some more! I'm in UTC +7
Check #looking-for-players
can cleric with heavy armor jump over the pits while having heav armor?
somehow my teamplayer is refusing to jump over it, stating... i have heavy armor, i can not jump over the pits or obstacles... thats why i ask is there any additional disadvantage while wearing heavy armor besides not having +AC on dex modifier
unless you're under a STR requirement, no, you could jump as far in heavy armor as you could in leather armor or even your skivvies
Even if you are under the strength requirement it doesn’t directly effect jumping, just indirectly reduces the distance you can jump by reducing your move speed
Hello, I’m kinda new to all this and need help on how I should start / create a character maybe just for fun atm?
Have a read of the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
The other mobility penalty is if the character doesn't reach the minimum strength requirement for that armour (13 for Chain, 15 for Splint and Plate), then their speed would be reduced by 10ft. This can have an impact on your jump distance if you are doing a running jump.
A 15 STR character in Splint, with a base movement speed of 30 ft would move 10 feet for their run-up and then be able to jump 15 ft, and carry on running for a further 5 at the other side.
A 14 STR character in Splint, with a base movement speed of 30 ft would move 10 feet for their run-up, but only be able to jump 10 ft, with no additional movement afterwards.
In other words: you can tell your friend that there already jumping penalties in the rules for if you are too weak, but if they are not reaching those criteria (or in those scenarios) then they are making up harder rules for themselves.
gracie mile, you are really helpfull.. looks like i encounter high home rulling dnd group as my first timer 😄
It's the same with high jump - 3+STR if you take a 10 foot runup. So if you have that base 30 foot movement, and have a 10ft penalty from not meeting your armour's STR requirement, then your jump height would be diminished.
Hah well everyone house rules. Don't worry about it.
Hello
Hello guys! I am a Barbarian that just got lvl 5 and i see that when i get lvl 5 i get +1 proficiency bonus, now i totally have +3 proficiency bonus. Now,i add that +1 on the skills and saving throws i have marked as proficient ? For example Strength & Constitution on Saving Throws
Yep!
Thank you 😄
So now you get to add +3 instead of +2 to attacks, saves and checks you are proficient in.
Awesome
Anyone think the new dnd book shattered obelisks is worth a go since first few levels is supposedly just LMOP to someone relatively new or os it just too heavy for now?
Hey, im new to DND, played one oneshot session with some friends 🙂
If i wanted to play online, what program do people use? i was thinking Tabletop simulator would be a good place to set up a session, im curious what you guys think about tabletop
Tabletop Simulator's a popular choice. There's some other good recommendations here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
so in D&D rule, u can only attune to 3 magic items at a time. in most D&D rpg video-games u have boots, gloves, armor, cape, necklace two rings and helmet in most games. so in tabletop u can only have say, armor, gloves and boots?
Not every magical item requires attunement, usually just the stronger ones.
So you can equip a ton of stuff, just pay attention to what requires attunement and make sure you don't go over your limit
Also D&D fifth edition doesn't use 'slots' like what you're describing
Instead it takes a 'common sense' approach; you can't wear two hats at once properly, but you can wear reasonably ten (or more) rings
Use common sense to determine whether more than one of a given kind of magic item can be worn. A character can't normally wear more than one pair of footwear, one pair of gloves or gauntlets, one pair of bracers, one suit of armor, one item of headwear, and one cloak. You can make exceptions; a character might be able to wear a circlet under a helmet, for example, or to layer two cloaks.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/magic-items#WearingandWieldingItems
ooooh, ok I understand. thank u!
are those all the items in D&D?
No
there a database where one can find them all?
thank u!
These are all the ones available in the free Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items?filter-source=1
Is the wizard the only class that can permanently learn a spell by copying into their spellbook from a scroll?
What would be a good level to have players during a oneshot where they'll fight a lvl 9 necromancer? Will be 5 players.
Yup! More specifically, the wizard is the only class that actually uses a spellbook!
Might want to ask this in #dm-discussion . They might be able to help you better
got it ❤️
Pact of the Tome Warlocks (with the Book of Ancient Secrets invocation) and characters with the Ritual Caster feat can also do this with ritual spells.
Good point, I forgot about this!
As permanently as the spellbook is.
Hey I’m pretty new to DND, I just made a few characters. What should my next step be?
You know the rules, at least generally?
Hardly, tried going into the rules channel but didn’t get much
I’m brand spanking new so 💀
The Basic Rules are linked in this channel’s pins. I’d recommend giving those a read. Then try to find a group. See #find-a-game.

why doesn't items have stats? like for example: https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/4574-armor-of-invulnerability
there is no AC noted.
so unless specified, the AC is the standard of the armor type, ie plate armor 18 AC?
The item type says Armor (Plate) which means you use the stats of Plate Armor
gotcha, tks
thx
hi, im new to the server, i've been doing a bit of research about dnd here and there, and im planning on being a dm. any tips on how i can uhh i guess start or like learn about the few steps on creating a campaign and such?
Welcome! I'm not sure how far you got with your own research, but if you need any resources for getting started, such as the free basic rules, you can find links to that in the bot post below this ⬇️
As for becoming a DM, while that certainly is a lot more work than being a player, its very possible to do so as a newcomer, if the work load doesn't bother you. If you want some tips and guides, I would highly recommend the Youtube series "Running the Game" by Matt Colville

Anyone got anything on monster hunter class
What do you mean?
You can pretty much take any class/subclass and make it a hunter of monsters, but generally Rangers are defined by "A warrior who combats threats on the edges of civilization."
Monster Slayer is the name of a Ranger subclass, if that's what you meant
The messages starting here (#dnd-newcomers message) and then scrolling down should help some.
how does combat work ive read the rules but im not quite understanding i need like a step by step example ive never been a dungeon master before first time player
Can you be a little more specific about which part confuses you?
sure like understanding armor class in the midst of battle like how do i know if the opponent like a goblin hits a 22 armor class
from what i understand, start of combat is rolling for initiative so that you know who can go first, every player and creature in the current encounter has an action, you can do 2 things in action phase; cast spells, ability or action and bonus action (im still not so sure about that)
i guess the dm tells you if your attack roll hits or not?
If you are attacking the goblin, you tell the DM what you rolled, and they will tell you if it hits, based on the goblin’s armor class. If the goblin is attacking you, the DM will tell you what the goblin rolled, and you will tell the DM if it hit or not based on your armor class
so you dont implement DC difficulty?
Armor class is usually pretty static in 5e: it doesn't usually change over the course of combat. All you need to pay attention to is your own, and your DM will pay attention to all the enemies' AC.
DC (Difficulty Challenge) is for saving throws and ability skill checks.
ah ok cool thank you

Can i make a party open for all / can i see where other people made a party?
And join it?
wtf 44 episodes
so I haven't played yet but I do know how to, and i have a bit of a stupid question lol
im planning on playing with some more experienced friends soon and i was wondering about roleplay, like. how into it can i get so it's like not bland but socially acceptable??? im pretty comfortable with it but idk if and what would be too much lolololol
I think you might be misunderstanding how dungeons and dragons works. It's not like a multiplayer game with lobbies to join, you'll have to reach out and find a group that is looking for new players. Check out #find-a-game to see what's been listed on this server and how to get started!
Thanks

me and my freinds just played our first ever session of dnd and i killed a shopkeeper by crushing her with mage hand out of panic and got us arrested already :L
If you're worried about your RP, you can always start off easy. Dictate your character's decisions in third person:
"Alfred is going to tell everyone he's planning on checking inside the church for any signs of danger."
oh
This article might be helpful: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1463-how-to-get-better-at-roleplaying-in-d-d
Pick the ones on the topics you want more information about. You certainly don't need to watch them all
yeah
im tryna be a 4ft tall dwarf with a 8ft long sword, watching dnd figther guide
i love roleplay actually, I'm just wondering if there's "too much", but I guess I could go with the flow of the party if I'm not sure
Each one is a short video explaining the various parts of D&D rules.
D&D is a game of rules. You can't avoid reading the rules.
yea
thank you!
Mage hand or Bigby's hand? Magehand can't attack normally so I'm a little confused
You'll usually get a feel of the table at your first session. And from there everyone can slowly become more comfortable with what their RP style is like!
nailsage sly style
i used magehand but we are all a bit new to dnd so we dont really know all the spells specifics yet
Roleplaying can feel awkward whether you're playing with friends or strangers. So if it's a little bumpy at first, don't fret too much. The groove may come with time, and if it doesn't, you can always find a new table whose style meshes with yours.
is your DM new as well? you don't have to know all the rules.. we all learn over time - but you should try and read the whole text of a spell you want to use so you know what it can or cannot do..
she is, and i will be sure to do that next session :)
but our first session was still hilarious and really fun
really excited to play again
Awesome!
that's the most important thing, really. 🙂 glad to hear it
also, continuing on the how much is too much thing, is it acceptable to go a little wild with the characters? i have a chaotic character i wanna play that's really fun but wild and im scared that someone's gonna mind
idk im just scared to try things generally
but i feel like playing a more unhinged character would make it more fun and easier for me
You should discuss this with the group before springing something out there on them. Session zero can be good in this regard, which is a pre-game conversation about expectations, vibe, and no-nos.
This is a decent summary of session zero, and there's tons of other guides online: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/929-new-players-guide-how-to-make-the-most-of-session
alright, thanks so much! :))
Be careful of being disruptive that it ruins the fun of others (including the DM).
Hey guys I'm somewhat a new player to dnd but I know a good amount of basics. I'm having a hard time picking a character to build. I want one that has pretty strong and consistent damage each round (not one that blows a bunch of CDs in one or 2 attacks) and also versatile having some cool in combat and out of combat features. I don't mind multiclassing but preferably only 2 classes cuz in still kinda new and we are level 4 and leveling progression is pretty slow
Ranger, Rogue, Bard, Paladin come to mind, but more importantly, I wouldn't focus so much on versatility; adventurers don't go alone, after all.
For new players, the general suggestion is not to multiclass at all. It's a bit complicated for someone just starting out, and can inadvertantly end up making your character pretty subpar.
Based on what you're looking for, check out Rogue, Artificer, Ranger, or Bard! Sometimes referred to as 'expertise classes', they can excel both in and out of combat
Which would you guys say has some of the strongest like consistent damage per round? Cuz it seems like a lot of classes rely a lot of spell slots for their big damage and once ur out of them you kinda do pretty doo doo damage
Depending on the subclass, I'd say Rogue, Ranger, or Artificer. That being said, I wouldn't worry too much about spells running out. If you're out of spells, it's likely your team is as well! Probably time to rest and get those slots back
Nothing is consistent like the big guy that stands in front. Paladin can hit especially heavy with some spells and smites, but should still hit decent if no spells. Fighters are just consistent DPS, all day, every day. Barbarians hit hard as well, and are big meaty sponges. Nothing's gonna compare to magic for hitting hard, though.
What kind of damage can rangers do?
They can do lots of different stuff like there's multiple ways to build a ranger
Most people go for an archery build though
Like Paladins, they can use spells to empower their weapon attacks. I'd suggest looking into the options some of the newer books add for rangers. There's plenty of cool stuff
You can vary from sniper to front liner, though I played Ranger once and poorly
Ranger is quite fun and can be strong especially if you're in your favored terrain often or fighting your favored enemy often
What kind of spells do they get to empower their attacks?
Also rangers don't get magic damage do they, so later in the campaign won't they be pretty useless against monsters with resistance to non magical damage?
I don't remember the name of the spell but turning the floor into thorns is pretty useful for, like, forever.
Rangers do get a few spells, but magic weapons solve that problem, too.
That is not remotely what makes Ranger good
Access to a fighting style, extra attack, good spells, and one of the best subclasses (and two fun ones) are
But getting into the weeds of Ranger seems beyond the scope of the channel
This is not entirely accurate
If you want to learn about optimizing damage, you’ll want to go to #optimization
Whats the best place to get metal dice for not 50 bucks? I want something kinda cool
Amazon?
Anywhere else you think?
No sir
Okey
im too stupid to figure out dnd, ive watched hundreds of guides over the past few years and i still dont know anything
do i just stop trying?

yes
If you have questions you can ask them
Or just go to your local game store and find a game
huh
You don't need to memorize all the rules. Just understand the fundamentals, like your class and combat.
Hello!
Hello!
Hello
Hi
yo is there anyway to do dnd online for new players
We don't talk about the MMO here. This server is for the D&D tabletop game.
i mean is there a way to play the tabletop but like online
Virtual tabletops (VTTs)? Yes.
It's the DM who decides which VTT to use.
They'll tell the player which VTT, such as Roll20, owlbear.rodeo, or Foundry (those are web-based clients).
Depends on the VTT.
Roll20, owlbear.rodeo, and Foundry all have free clients.
Talespire, a 3D VTT, requires everyone to buy a copy (this is why I didn't go with it).
I believe FantasyGrounds requires everyone to own a copy as well.
I think Roll20 is the only one where you can have a totally free experience. The others all have one person paying. I use Foundry - there's really only one piece of software, but it serves up web pages for my players (who don't need to pay).
My advice is to start with Roll20 on free mode, see if you and your group like VTT play, and if you do - then upgrade to something better.
Roll20 has a free tier and a monthly sub tier (the latter has added features).
Owlbear 2 is free too, and actually usable at that. I've got a boatload of maps, assets, and custom tokens, and it's only around a quarter of the free storage. I've not felt any push for a subscription on it
I use Foundry and it's worth the one-time $50 license fee (although you have to host it yourself).
Owlbear 2 also works even on potato toaster laptops, that's a potentially important thing about VTTs. I've got a couple of players who basically run on toasters, so the low intensity works nice. Roll20 has some jank due to being made for everything and another, and the others are far more intense or require money
Anyway, if you want to know more about VTTs, ask in #third-party-tools-archive
is there a way to find groups to help people learn the game
Check out #find-a-game
appreciate all the help
I was reading the post and notice online rules focus on class and combat rules. My question is are there other rules I should have knowledge of?
Skill checks and saving throws are also good to have some familiarity with
Ability checks*
Thanks for the knowledge in advanced
is there any functional difference between an attack roll, ability check and saving throw, besides what the dc is determined by, the context and what modifiers (ex. guidance, resistance, bless, bardic inspo) apply to the roll?
like are they all just on a baseline level, 'roll a d20, add ability bonuses, meets it beats it, profit'
Pretty much - but just to recap:
Skill check: player rolls a d20 and adds their modifiers and proficiency (if applicable) and any bonuses. The DM takes the result and if it beats the Difficulty Challenge (DC) they the DM has set, the character succeeds. Nat 20s or Nat 1s do not have any "auto succeed/lose" function.
Saving Throws: Player rolls a D20 and adds any saving throw bonuses/modifiers (and any additional magical bonuses in effect). If it meets or beats the DC or spell save DC, then usually damage is reduce and magical effects don't take effect. Death saving throws - nat 20s and nat 1s have additional impact.
Attack Rolls: Player rolls a d20 and adds modifiers and bonuses - if the result beats the enemy target's Armor Class (AC), it hits. Natural 20's are automatic hits regardless of AC. Natural 1s are automatic misses regardless of bonuses and modifiers.
Mechanically, they work pretty much the same. However, they do fulfill different narrative roles, and other rules may apply to some of them but not others.
An ability check is an attempt to perform a task, an attack roll is an attempt to hit another creature, and a saving throw is an attempt to avoid some ill fate.
I assume it would be stupid to carry around 2 backpacks, but what about having 2-3 pouches strapped to your sides and front?
Items strapped to a backpack, do they count towards the backpack max carry limit, or your main inventory?
Just looking for some opinions.
Some games are big into tracking equipment and weight so adding more pouches to what you carry would very much be a discussion to have with your DM and group you're playing with.
Other groups just handwave it away as they'd rather focus on other aspects of the game then tracking all the things.
I seccond that. It's really up to your DM, and how realistically you guys are playing the carry system
Sounds good. I'll bring it up when we play
Ability checks*
Thanks!
the format is a little less colloquial yeah
It's not exactly skill check, it's Ability check, or Ability (Skill) check, depending on if a skill proficiency matters or is allowed or whatever
Does anyone have premade character sheets for each class with varying levels if so DM me it.
You should be able to find some on DND Beyond, if I remember correctly
Yep
They only have a few, with very little varying races from what I have found
You can level them up yourself
There’s one for every class
You can’t expect someone to make one for every race/class combo
Idk, the page I'm on has plenty
There’s one for every class plus one for each bg3 character
including character sheets for characters from BG3, which is super neat
Thanks for the info maybe I'm just blind I'll go try and find it 👍👍
Hey. I am new here and struggling I don't usually use discord and never played dnd is someone here able to help me?

Oh rlly? Didn’t notice that
Do dms just hate New players or something?
Broadly speaking? No.
I'm trying to find a group and some dms are rude af
…
i know this is kind of a dumb question but can someone explain how warlock spell slots work? i dont understand the table
The Warlock table shows how many spell slots you have and what level those spell slots are.
All your spell slots are for a single level that increases over time.
Unlike other Spellcaster, Warlocks have “pact slots”
The primary difference:
- they recharge every short rest instead of long rest
- you have much fewer, for most of the time it will be only 2
- the level of the pact slot increases accoring to the table
so you only get 2 spells to cast per day at level 4? that seems pretty bad no?
Thus, when your Warlock pact slots reach level 5, when you cast a spell with them, it will be at lv 5
Not per day, read CAREFULLY
They recharge every SHORT REST
This is distinct from most casters who recharge on a long rest
so youd have to convince your group to short rest after each battle essentially then correct?
That is sonething for your table to discuss
But a short rest is approximately 1 hour; a long rest 8 hours
Every DM paces their day differently but generally it will be much easier to short rest than long
This is the distinct advantage a warlock has when your DM runs more frequent encounters per “day” (between long rests)
If you read further you will see Warlocks get “invocations” which provide for benefits that compensate for fewer pact slots
Good night
Hi I’m brand new and kinda confused on some stuff
Same
What are you confused about?
I have a perfect campaign
One thing I’m confused on is do you just hop on a call and play or do you have to do some kinda set up thing
You need to find a group to play with
It depends on the DM on how they set things up.
Join this group:
Don’t advertise here the mods don’t like it
Breads Haunted Manor
Any whey my friend made I character that seems cool but I’m not sure if it’s allowed or something’s
Join that group
How is it not allowed?
The DM has final say on the characters allowed at their table.
I’m not it’s not even my group I just really like it
This is something your friend should work with the DM on.
We haven’t iven hade a game
That’s why I’m asking
His character was a child who was thrown off a cliff do to bring a child of a affair and was raised by a dragon
Do you have a DM?
Please stop advertising here
It’s the one I’m in
Aye everyone calm down
He stopped advertising
And he was just showing me a group
In case I couldn’t find a group
Sorry bro I’m a dude
It’s fine
Anyway is the idea of a child being raised by a dragon allowed
Entirely dm dependent
But what do y’all think about it
My carecter name is Frey
Nice mine is
Sounds good to me!!!
As long as the character doesn't get anything extra out of it then it should be fine.
Okashii ryu
Ah yes the chaos is brewing now the adventures won’t fully pay attention to the workings in the shadows
I’m got to go to bed. Gn
Yeah he really just got like a weird rock thing that protects him and can speak dragon
Good night to Frey
Players shouldn't be giving themselves magic items.
Sorry
I just thought it made sense because my characters intire thing is he has no understanding of society
So I thought sense his “mother” would give him something to protect him
The availability of magic items is dependent on the DM, and you certainly should not make a backstory that hinges on having a specific one bc that is not in your control
This is a thing that is up to DMs but it is unlikely to find a dm that would allow it
U also maybe be over-writing your backstory too specifically when the DM hasnt worked with you yet
DMs usually start new players to D&D at level 1 -- those characters are "fresh out of the academy" so to speak. They won't have any experience adventuring and shouldn't have any magic items. Part of adventuring is getting loot.
Okay what about just the basic leather armor two schumatrs he can dual wield and basic supplies
Is that too much
Or should I turn the schimatrs to like basic swords
Your class and background will dictate what your character comes with
You dont arbitrarily give yourself stuff
Well you would think a dragon would have stuff
Like two swords
No magic just two scimitars
Again, your class and background will give you the starting equipment.
Again, there are specific rules about this - your class and background will determine what you come with unless the dm has specific rules
Class fighter
Otherwise, everyone will write in their backgrounds that they were raised by dragons so they can give themselves anything and everything.
Don't bro me.
Again
I know DMs that let things like that go and DMs that dont, it is a heavy dm dependent thing. My suggestion would be to make a sort of skeleton of a backstory, then find a DM you like. After finding a DM you like then I would flesh out the backstory and talk with them to see if they would allow things like this.
One more time- read your class and your background
We're telling you the standard rules so it's safe with all DMs.
We're trying to teach you so don't "bro" us.
Backstory thrown off cliff as child abandoned found by dragon cared for and sent out to leave
That’s it
And learned dragon
Language
Dragon if
Dragonic
The BACKSTORY isnt the issue- thats something up to the player
The BACKGROUND is a mechanical part of your character creation
As is your CLASS
Fighter is my class
So the look at the fighter class
Now pick your Background.
And one of his skills was dual wield
Read what it says about starting equipment
Dual wield is not a “skill”
Okay fighting style sorry
Also not a fighting style
And it’s says basic weapons
And also does not mechanicaly affect your starting equipment
It says that on my thing
The fighting style does not dictate what you can have, although you may choose from what the fighter class gives you
We keep telling you:
- your CLASS
- your BACKGROUND
These dictate your starting equiebt
Dnd beyond
There is no such term as “basic weapons”
Simple weapons I believe is the term used
in dnd language is important so you need to use specific terminology- another lesson for you
look at the table with all the weapons
Or the dropdown menu
And select the appropriate options
Okay so you can have that stuff
It says in starting equipment
Open two martial weopans
In the list it has scimitars
This is why we tell you to look at the text instead of randomly giving your character stuff
Scimitars are martial weapons
I do look at the text
that was not apparent
But was I right tho schimatrs are martial weopans
Dude you need to relax a bit
You can take over
Thanks for at least backing me up super speedy
no problem
Should I just start a new character super speedy
Or continue
Because my real story is the dragon has no flight was robbed for all her gold and is pretty much a poor dragon
Continuing would be fine
But has weopans from all the adventures attacking her
I dont know what your character sheet looks like exactly but continuing should be good
How did you generate the ability scores?
Oh so you have both then?
Oh so you did point buy then I believe
I think
Is there like a screen share thing I could do
So I can show all of it at once
Dexterity 16
Charisma -3
Don’t ask
Did you just write a random number or did you select from a dropdown list?
Okay
Maybe some multiplier was negative
No it is the scor
Well that’s not possible
go for it cuz I have no idea how that happened
That means the score is 5
Oh
-3 is the modifier
My mistake guys
Still no idea how you got that
Me neither
I think you did use rolled stats, it must just roll for you
Ok so the mod is -3 and the score is 5
Yeah the dropdown options would have been what it rolled
No it make sense now
Yeah now it’s 11
Yeah but still my lowest stat
Yeah its much better now though lol
But his goal is kinda weird but is it still good
His goal grind heaps of gold to his mom
The dragon
Is 30 ft speed good
30 is default speed
Yeah
Cause my guys intire thing is strong good battle sense but no common sense
Cause he lived with a dragon his entire live
Oh yeah his mom gold was stolen by pixiu
Pixiu?
Yeah
It says they like stealing
Oops another mistake that’s a mythilogicla creature
Not a dnd creature
Stupid google
All good lol
It labeled what dnd race likes stealing
And that was the answer
But uhh how long do most dnd session last
No it said pixiu
Generally 2-4 hours, but very dm dependent
Can session be split up
A session is one instance of play
Oh do you mean campaign?
If you split up a session more it would be multiple sessions
I’m still new to all the grammar
Plenty of games run 2 hour sessions
Yeah there are plenty of those out there
Oh did y’all know I own a crocodile
Using an analogy of tv shows, a session is like one episode, an adventure is one story arc, which could take place across multiple sessions or fully in one session, and the campaign is the whole show
Let's stay on topic folks
Sorry I just started
Ye sir
hey huys i just joined for dnd beyond any tips?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
hi hi! can someone clarify the "threatened" status for me?
is it just when a character has an enemy within 5ft and tries to make any ranged attack it's disadvantage?
so even a normal melee character like a fighter using a dagger(as an example) or some such, if they have an enemy right next to them and try to throw the weapon, it's disadvantage?
Yep
Yeah, that's how the threatened status works
Thats a baldurs gate thing right?
As an actual 'status' yes.
5e has it where ranged attacks are at disadvantage if an enemy is adjacent to you and not incapacitated. In BG3 this shows as having a 'Threatened' status. While no such condition/status actually exists in 5e, it is essentially the same concept.
But note that if you're playing with someone who doesn't play BG3 and you say 'you're at disadvantage because you're threatened' they may not know what you mean whereas 'you're at disadvanatge because an enemy is within 5ft' they would.
Thats what I thought, I was just curious if I had missed a entire status effect, it would not be the first time someone has added something to the PHB or DMg behind my back.
Hi guys, quick question about channel divinity: preserve life. Does "This feature can restore a creature to no more than half of its hit point maximum." mean I can heal them up to half of their HP? or mean that the amount of healing I can do is equal to half of their hp, if that makes sense 😛 the wording makes me think that if someone has 80hp I can't heal them past 40 health with the use of preserve life (probably a silly question but wanting it clarified)
maybe this should have gone in dnd-rules
Yep! So if someone has 80hp Max, and is currently at 25hp, when you use that feature you can heal them up to 40, but no more.
so up to 40/80? Thanks for clarifying 🙂 the splitting healing makes more sense
Hi I'm new ro dnd and wanted to find a campaign with like 2 other people cos I don't rly like calls with more than like 4 ppl lol

the #find-a-game channel is the place to look. I hope you find a group to your liking!
Thx
Hiya! Soooo.... I've never actually played dnd before but my friends and I wanna play. But the issue is we're not really sure how to play or what to do. I've looked it up but it doesn't really make too much sense to me. Can someone like REALLY dumb it down for me?

Greetings. The name's Lucorias, I'm a fairly new player that has never actually played before that has also started to build a concept of sorts for a homebrew class that I just came up with one day at the beginning of this year.
Welcome!
Is assassin rogue one of the strongest rogue subclass up to 5th level?
Thanks
i dont think theres a hard a fast rule for that due to the variability in games and dm rulings
Out of curiosity, have you run this class by your DM yet?
especially suprise and stealth
I take it your speaking to me spamandtuna?
Yeah
I don't currently have a DM
and also because I am inexperienced, I plan on playing the Wizard, Sorcerer, and Warlock Classes before I start to test the Homebrew class.
Oh good 😅
Didn’t want to rain on your parade there, but DMs are usually pretty choosy about which homebrew they allow.
And a class is no easy feat.
Yes
I can only imagine
and incase you have wondered why I have chosen to play those 3 classes it is because my homebrew has something like a subclass called a "Class Path" and those 3 are planned to be a part of it. Because it is a Magic base class.
If you did want to work on the idea, #homebrew can help.
But my general advice to newcomers is to focus on learning how the game works as-is before trying to modify it.
Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Yeah, Duely Noted.
Would any subreddit in Reddit be of any help as well?
hi im new, i enjoy playing magic users usually.. I'm planning on DM'ing friends IRL.. but i've never gotten the chance to play before
The issue is you are trying to make your own class having no experience playing any class yet, so there’s no starting point for the mechanics or balance of features
Yep..
I would strongly suggest tabling the homebrew idea and actually playing before committing to it
There may very well be existing classes that can already do what you want to do
I wouldn’t know. Sorry. 😅
Welcome! Picked an adventure for them yet?
can anyone give me a run down of what adventurers league games actually look like? is it small seperate groups all playing in the same overarching plot or do all the characters interact with eachother somehow
#adventurers-league maybe the best place to ask
Hello I’m new and hope I’m welcomed just trying to have fun and enjoy this new experience
True. I saw a video on YouTube and a guy suggested check wikis and all sorts of other websites for any way that someone may have made a homebrew idea similar to my own. (or to anyone watching the video)
Woops, forgot to turn off the ping, sorry.
I own 'Dragon of Icespire Peak' and 'Lost Mines of Phandelver' but I have not decided which yet. Any recommendations?
they are both amazing
Or…look at the existing classes and subclasses
Yep
lost mines has a better plot but icespire peak felt more sandboxy when i played it
So? ,how does one play
theres a command somewhere that links all the info, maybe someone could send that
any general tips regarding adventuring for new players?

Have you played D&D before?
nope never.
so maybe a weird question, but are bards required to have their hands available for instruments, or can they use their class actions without instruments by like, singing or whistling or something along those lines?
guess a better question would be, are instruments a requirement for parts of the class
None of their class features require an instrument. They can use an instrument as a spellcasting focus for their spells, but they can also use a component pouch if you don't want to.
alright, thank you
Nope - the instrument is just a focus for casting spells. But it actually doesn't need to be "played" to be used for casting spells and all that.

Hey guys. Does everyone start out as a player or can you try it out as a DM? Does it matter?
You can try to jump into DMing without playing but DMing takes a lot of work, effort, and time.
Players just have to know how their characters work while the DM has to know a bit of everything.
Got it. Thank you
Heyyy, so, question about bonus actions in combat
I have a Level 3 Rogue and 2 daggers, one of my abilities as Rogue is to have a bonus action (limited, but still bonus), and reading through the dual wielding thing it says I can "Use a bonus action to attack with the other dagger"
Can I use both bonus actions at the same time? Like let's say I used the Rogue bonus action to double my movement and then the other to attack with both daggers
You only get 1 bonus action per turn. Your rogue abilities are just different options on what to spend it on
Ahh okay, cool thanks!
Hi guys I’m new

Did some things but
All game are the next week-end
So it’s hard to stay into it
Hey guys if I roll an athletics check to push someone over and they fail their saving throw are they just knocked back or do they get knocked prone?
Have you learned how the rules of the game yet? The more you know the more that helps out a potential DM.
Shoving another creature:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#ShovingaCreature
The target must be no more than one size larger than you and must be within your reach. Instead of making an attack roll, you make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target's Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). You succeed automatically if the target is incapacitated. If you succeed, you either knock the target prone or push it 5 feet away from you.
Oh ok, yeah they got knocked prone but they failed their save so that tracks
Or should I say they rolled way under my roll
Hello! I'm a new player attempting to create my first character for dnd and i'm having trouble trying to figure out their backstory and motivations
does everything have to be based off of an already existing lore bit in universe? should i create my own things? its alot to remember and read and im not really fully understanding it
It would depend on the world the dm is setting the adventure in
If you can’t wait one week for a game that’s an issue on your end
Patience can be a big part of DnD, most groups play 1 day a week, and some campaigns can go a long while. I played in a campaign for 2 years, some weeks drag by slower than others.
hello, ive never played before but it sounds really interesting and im looking for someone to teach me and or play with me <3

Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups if you’re ready to jump in.
Welcome!
If i am starting a game at level five what equipment should i have. Im an autognome artificer specialising in melee combat
can someone help me I don't know how to play this game
Sure but im not much better
Your DM should let you know whether you start with anything other than the typical starting equipment from your class and background.
Ok. Thanks!

Do I need to build my character before starting a campaign or is that a process that happens during the start?
I like building my characters to fit with the theme of the campaign… which is hard to do before knowing what the campaign is about.
What I’d suggest is coming up with a few loose ideas for characters. Then you can work with the DM to pick the best fit and add any final details.

You can have a couple concepts in mind and tweak after you know your Dm’s rules
And keep your backstory looser, which is better practice anyways
I hear a lot of stories of campaigns and characters taking weeks or a month to set up and no one ends up attending the session. I don't want to creat a whole new character building his backstory to specifically fit the world of the campaign only for it to be canceled at the last minute. So can I just make a character with just their name and stats set up and make a backstory with some vague parts that I can ad lib later
The way you keep your backstory adaptable is to focus on general points and not something specific
For example this is limiting:
Mom came from the South river village
Dad came from the willow spire mountains
I was born in year 293748
Parents died in the third war of blah blah
I found a Fairy Sword of Black magic
All that is pretty pointless
Something more like:
Orphaned
Grew up on a temple of monks who found me in the forest
Looking for parents killers
Likes swords
Fits anywhere

Hi everyone! I played my first session today! My very first roll in dnd ever was a natural 1! It was hilarious and I had a blast! 🤣 sorry just had to tell someone!
Oh dear! Well hopefully there are many nat 20s in your future
I did get one which was so exciting! Even with some bad rolls though I loved it.
what are saving throws
They’re a roll you make to see if you can avoid/resist some effects, often magic or traps
An example is a Dex save to see if you can get out of the way of a dragon’s breath weapon
Sometimes things are attacks - an archer shoots a single arrow at a target, attack roll versus target AC.
Sometimes things are stranger effects - an aura of deathly energy, a spell causing fear, a ghost trying to possess you, the roaring wave of fire from a red dragon, a banishment spell returning something to its native plane (or temporarily banishing it from its native plane), these are saving throw effects, made with one of the six abilities, against the DC of whoever or whatever caused the effect. These things aren't always suitable to be attack rolls, and thus saves exist.
basically. saving throws are made to avoid something bad happing to a creature.
Attack rolls are made to hit things, and ability checks are made when attempting a non trivial task
Figuring out it's poison is an ability check.
Enduring poison is a saving throw.
Throwing the poison bottle at someone is an attack.
hi 👋
Hey just started looking into D&D and is wondering if there is a beginner game i can join (will be my 1st ever D&D game) and would really appreciate the help
You can look through the various posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community . Most folks are fine taking on new-to-D&D players as long as that player shows they are putting in effort to learn the game (e.g. read the rules) and generally vibe well with the rest of the group playing.
Just message the poster or use the attached thread to the post to let folks know you're interested.
Yea I’ve downloaded D&D beyond on my phone and players handbook been watching alot of youtube and feel as ready as i can to finally meet others hopefully know enough not to embarrass myself thanks mate

There are probably lots of questions coming in from me, but which character sheet do I normally use? Is it the 5th edition?
Are the sheets listed in the links above for other "sub-versions" or "campaigns" (sorry I don't know the terms yet)?
They are all good, the top ones the 5e character sheets are blank, for you to make your own characters.
The others are pre generated characters from different box sets or just created so that if you didnt want to make a character and wanted to play, you can use those and pick one you like.
Its much easier IMO to make a character once you have played a little bit, it can be a little harder to make a character without a grasp of the rules and playing is the best teacher.
I appreciate the patience and explaination! The only experience I have with DnD is via Baldur's Gate and watching a stream where they play it as DnD, but that's as far as it goes. I would like to join a campaign and play but I feel like it's still too early. I don't want to slow down the game by asking too much lol What do you think? I assume reading the rules is now the top priority, correct?
Yes definitely, pick a class and race you like and learn about that, you dont need to know every class or race, just learn the one you want to play and the basic rules to begin with. Getting into a game especially online with strangers can be difficult, so I would start applying and throwing a wide net now. Be open about being new, we were all new once and it can be a complicated game at first.
Excellent. Thank you so much for the help ☺️
Can the books you buy be sold to other players? I bought it but didn't understand how to play. I regret it
No, there's no transferral
This game has no visible characters, it's all pictures. I think it's a card type game
it's a TTRPG. You make your character, the dungeon master runs the game.
And it's more math and rules than just pictures
D&D is not a card game, no.
you play together in a group and tell a story together, based on the actions of the players, the rules of the game and the roll of the dice
What's the point of buying a book?
D&D books? you get rules, character options, monsters, adventures or adventure ideas, lore, etc. depending on the book
note that you don't need to get every book if you just want to be player
so really you get those based on what is your need or what you want
What book did you buy, specifically? From where?
Maybe I'm dumb, but how do I buy JUST all the races and classes on DnDbeyond?
You can buy them individually if you go to the book in the marketplace, scroll to the bottom, and purchase them one by one. Tho at some point it will be less expensive to buy them in the book as opposed to all of the options that come out of just one.
Inside every book that has races, there should be an option to buy those races in bulk.
In Monsters of the Multiverse, for example:
You can get each race for $1.99, or all 33 for $9.99.
The only class that isn’t available by default is the Artificer, which can be unlocked by purchasing any Artificer subclass from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything: Alchemist, Armorer, Artillerist, or Battle Smith.
I didn’t know there was a race bundle in there! Neat.
Yeah, all the book have that for every group of options.
And whatever you spend on these individual purchases gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
If you buy a race, it will also reduce the price of the race pack it's from.
e.g. if you buy one race from that pack, it will cost $8.00 afterwards
Yep! Everything you buy counts for everything else that contains that purchase.
So buying an individual race gets credited toward:
- The race bundle from that book
- The book itself
- Any book bundles that contain that book
so im homebrewing a campaign based on ancient greek, any advice?
You could take a look at Mythic Odysseys of Theros for inspiration.
Or a third-party option like Odyssey of the Dragonlords.
Yeah, Theros is a good one

WASD20’s Rules School and Beginner Guides are also useful.
i'm kind of facing a problem here
i'm assuming that d&d playthroughs are played for a few hours long sessions over multiple days
but i'm a highschooler
i can't possibly fathom making this much time out of weekends
You could search for groups that play shorter sessions. Not that I’m looking for players, but my group plays for two hours every two weeks because everyone has busy lives. It’s a commitment, but not a major one.
You could also do play-by-post, which is text-based and not typically in real-time so folks participate when they can. Sometimes the expectation is once per day or something similar, just to keep the game going.
I’ve been in some awesome PBP games, but it is much slower and misses out on the cross-talk and detours that happen during traditional play.
I enjoy a good PBP.
Alrighty, I'm in a bit of a pickle, my friends introduced me to dnd which I now enjoy, our Dm had 4 players and a companion, we finished our campaign and they elected me to be the next Dm, the issue is that I need to figure out how to balance game play for 8 people
He invited some friends, are there any sites that could teach me the basics of the Dm so its not too easy or boring?
Explain that your new and dont want to DM for 8 people for a start TBH.
Balancing gameplay for 8 people is hard for experienced DM's. Its an unwieldy number of players.
Alrighty, that'd definitely lessen the load
This DM that invited 4 extra people? just say to them I am happy to DM for the original 4, but 4 extra people is too much and give them the option to DM again, I doubt they will want to juggle 8 people.
Yes, don't DM for 8. Two groups of 4. If each group loses one person due to attrition so you are down to 6, merge them. Maybe run the same campaign so it's easy enough to merge the .
hi
where should a complete beginner start with dnd, just reading some starter books?
nvm ill just look up chat history to find the answer lol
@lime bridge we can learn together lol. Im new too
🥹 we can be friends since childhood

what did you mean by that
Yh like since this is a RPG and if we learning together technically if we learn this together we can become long childhood friends

well ok

So I have went to the book (mordenkainen) and it shows all the stuff it gives in the book. But it doesn't give individual options. Do I have to use the actual website or the app?
For troubleshooting the D&D Beyond website, you should head to #ddb-support.
The website. Those individual purchases are not available on the app.
(Though they’re usable in the app once purchased.)
There was the problem. Figured it out thank you.
hii, new here!
Welcome!
Hey, what up? New here myself
Hello, new here and new to DnD

Hello everyone, I, someone who also joined a few days ago, welcomes you xd
What have you got so far? Where are you stuck?

i wanna join dnd but i need a character to join
Does that mean you don’t have anything so far? You’re stuck at the beginning?
yes

sorry i didn't even specify
There’s links there you can use to create a character sheet.
o ok
The Basic Rules are also linked there. The first few chapters cover character creation.
But you’ll want to start by picking a race and class.
Yeah, in the Basic Rules, linked above.
Chapter one is an overview of the steps for creating a character.
Chapter two describes races.
Chapter three describes classes.
So I don’t know if did the looking for game thing right
What do you mean?

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Is there a point to pact of the blade when u already have a weapon?
Every Hexblade Warlock has a weapon, nobody uses Pact of the Blade for the weapon, they do it for the new features that they can now use with that weapon
I cannot fathom a DM that's like "no you cannot get weapons as Hexblade Warlock until you take pact of the Blade"
pact of the blade allows you to use every (magic) weapon in the game with proficiency. furthermore, its required for certain invocations, like improved pact weapon, thirsting blade, lifedrinker etc
Ohhhhn okay thank you!
and without thirsting blade at least, you wont be doing a lot with your weapons as you level
wait I forgot that Warlocks other than Hexblade can also take that pact
most people I've played with that takes pact of the blade are Hexblades though
Welcome!
So what do i do after i read the 100000 word thing
after reading through the basic rules, you would try to find a group to play with. Friends, family, your local gaming store, or online
You learn to create a character and find a table to play at (in person or online).
is there somewhere here that i can join?
Check out #find-a-game
Thats because theres little point in any other subclass going with a weapon
Or melee at all
yeah exactly
no. unless you play in hyper optimized games, any warlock with a melee weapons is fine
some subclasses are even quite good at it
and since this channel is for newcomers, I dont think its great to hit them with hardcore optimizer advice
Sorry I was at work I just meant I don’t think I fully answer everything how it was supposed to be answer when putting a looking for game thing
hii

Hello, I am new to DnD and plan to join in my first session at the beginning of november. I am still learning everything I can while taking insparation to make stories and for my stories.
If you're new, you should look over those resources linked above. If you still have specific questions afterward, this is a good channel for them.
Can I make a Rogue Paladin character?
You can multiclass, but it's not recommended for new players.
ive played before and finshed a starter campaign but still relatively new
knight it is then, thx for clearing this up.
There's no official knight class, unless you mean paladin or fighter as a single-class character.
Cavalier fighter?
yes I look on the fighter knight class
There's no knight class.
These are the official classes: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
I mean knight are like a sub class for paladin or fighter right?
Again, there is no knight sub-class.
There's the fighter cavalier sub-class and the paladin class, who fit the archetype of European knights.
maybe not as class but a playing style, like a fighter with heavy armor, and using one handed swords?
is that a knight?
that clear things up, thank you.
With multispeccing into paladin do you get the spell slots based on your paladin level or based on your level in general?
Spell Slots. You determine your available spell slots by adding together all your levels in the bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, and wizard classes, and half your levels (rounded down) in the paladin and ranger classes. Use this total to determine your spell slots by consulting the Multiclass Spellcaster table.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#MulticlassSpellcaster
I think, I just wanted the paladin spell and passive rather than the whole class for my rogue paladin, Im gonna use it after understanding the game as a whole.
?tag new online
The article above covers the basics of playing online. Did you have more particular questions?
Nope, thanks.
Btw, do we need to share the character for the DM first? or everyone in the campaign just share it all?
That's up to the table, but odds are good the DM will want to see your sheet first to check that everything's on the up and up.
that sounds nice, Thank You.
Most DMs want to witness rolling ability scores if they allow that.
so basically the character stats as a whole?
Yes.
Sup fellow... dnd'ers
Hello again
I'm pretty new to this as well
I did get my handbook last week and there is so much to learn and to know
Hi guys, I had a quick question. I'm going out to buy some dice tomorrow, I was told to at least get a set but might want more depending on the class I was playing, How many would I need for a Warlock?
I'm looking at creating a character...can I create a character that is half elf and half halfling?
Well, technically speaking you can make do with 1 set, if you are ok with rolling dice a few times in a row and adding them all up. I would personally recommend at the very least getting 2 d20s. I think 2 standard sets should probably be enough to do pretty much anything comfortably though
I've seen a few played and I'm eager to join a game, but I have a ways to go before I understand all that is involved
In 5e “half elf” is its own defined race. What your parents were, and what you actually look like, can be up to you, but if you want to play a half-elf, you have to use the stats and features of the half-elf race
Ah ok that actually makes it easier, the store near me have a lot of cool sets that would fit with the kinds of characters I like to play so having an excuse to buy 2 sets is great
Some really nice ones on Amazon
Unfortunately Norway (Where I am rn) doesnt have easy access to amazon
any sites that can explain how a dm should set up encounters? or anyone that wants to explain the basics?
ouch
im currently going through the player rule book and havent seen anything helpful to new dms yet
D&D beyond has an encounter builder tool that can help you evaluate the difficulty of an encounter based on your party size and level
okay thank you I plan on have one parent of each race
alrighty, thanks
wow that's crazy
Hallow I'm new ;-;
same
I'm shy to ask for help ;-;
nice
I played Baldur's Gate 3 by myself
🥲
Aww :< well hopefully u find a group
Same on both. I want to play though

Is there anybody here willingto teach newcomers in any dnd I recommend the official or something
Have a read of the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
i mean i had read it, but i'll reread it
Was there a specific question you had, then?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtLcWpD16Uo&ab_channel=D%26DBeyond this video might help you see how a game will go.
i'm just looking for someone. willing to actual teach, like in action. I mean i could look for a video but It not be as helpful as experiencing it yourself
:p
You could have a look for a game to join
Yes. You talk about helpful. The best way to learn is to do. And many groups are very kind and patient in helping a newcomer thru. So no need to worry. Join and game, let them know you're new and have fun.

Heya all
hi
Heyy
How's everyone?
Pretty good, got home from work and can finally relax for a bit. Hbu?
Noice I'm alright about to sleep tho lol
I’m going to my first campaign today, anything I should keep in mind?
Have fun, don’t worry about making mistakes, know your abilities and skills
Ye also try to be respectful of the dm, don't talk over them.
If you had a good time, say it! Dms love hearing that
What monk class is the easiest to understand
Probably fighter
What way of is that?
I think they're all quite simple
Way of the open hand allows you to just be focusing on the punchy aspect of monks, and doesn't need you to also learn spellcasting stuff.
Hallo
Well that's the same for Drunken Master and Astral Self as well
How do I start?
Start what, specifically?
