In my experience, creativity is very much a table controlled factor. Getting an idea of the general rules is very important, though. There's no flexibility in calculating modifiers.
Fr I struggle at creating the scene the options for each situation as a dm
I am trying to learn the rules right now to be honest it’s kind of difficult to understand
you may have to just learn it as you go

How does your character learn spells? ALSO is a lycanthrope transformation a spell or..?
A caster learns spells when the level up - there isn't really anything mechanically more to it (except wizards who can learn and record spells into their spellbook following the rules outlined in their class description). Now as a player you can work with your DM to flavor that up if you want.
Lycanthropy is a curse and not typically for PCs because it would be a bit too OP due to their resistances/immunities.
Is there any possible way to play as an angel in Beyond?
That said, there is the shifter playable race but your DM has to allow that.
You can pick the Aasimar race - which is kind of "divine-like" humanoids.
Aasimar is the closest thing to a playable "angel"
Im learning alot today lol
Ill do research from here on, thanks yall for the help 👍
Lemme rephrase my question, my character is a werebear is there an ability for a transformation? Or is it at random?
That would be a homebrew race so up to your DM to decide how it works
What do you mean “your character is a werebear”?
They were polymorphed into a werebear
So basically, Haldir asked to be infected from a werebear and now has the curse
Is this your concept or did you make a character and this happened to you in the game, im so confused what you’re asking for
It sounds to me like their character existed as something else and submitted to this curse?
In which case depending on the DM they might just describe your first transformation and then tell you to make a new pc
Unless u are at this persons table or know the answer, lets let them answer
Fair enough
Okay, sorry for the confusion it’s a concept I made. I was just wondering if there was an ability for the lycanthropy transformation.
Yes that’s easier
You can choose the shifter race
In Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse, there is a race called Shifter available to players that approximates the “werewolf” (or animal) concept
It is an official book, it is not free, but should be legal at most tables
Oh, alright i just thought shifters only got the abilities of a certain animal and didn’t become it itself.
How the creatute appears is generally up to you
The mechanics of the race and how the transformation works are described in the book
what stats besides charisma are the most important for sorcerers?
Constitution is critical - both for HP and maintaining concentration
shifters are on dndbeyond. you just don't own the book it comes from
(Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse)
Ohhhhhh ok
And the link to that race: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/1026402-shifter
No but they can scroll down in the marketplace and buy it individually if they want
That’ll take them to where they can purchase it, then.
stealth sales employee
nah - good customer service
so as a sorcerer i was thinking of making wisdom my lowest stat
is wisdom going to be that important for me?
Maybe make strength your lowest...
but anyway i think eberron also has the legacy shifter @lyric fjord if you need it
Wisdom cam be helpful, but I’d say CHA, DEX, and CON are the top three.
ok thanks
After that, it’s just personal preference.
CHA > CON > DEX
Or that
CON is one of your proficient saving throws
I might be blind? Is the race itself called shifter?
Correct - the race is called Shifter
there are some nasty effects tied to wisdom saving throws
yes, i always leave wisdom at 10 minimum
I’m so confused. So if my character is a werebear it will not have a character card with extra abilites? My apologises for the confusion I just need to double check
There aren’t really official rules for playing as a werebear.
werebear is not a race in the game
No that I understand
You can play a shifter and call it a werebear, but you’d have only the abilities of a shifter.
Anything beyond that is a discussion you’d need to have with your DM.
Understood. There were just a couple “rules” I saw and like ability cards so I was making sure
Is there a rat race on dnd beyond?
Druid is the best bet dm can always agree to let a wild shape be one
I learned how to run a lycanthrope, everyone clap!!!!
sadly no...
Dang
ratfolk in pf and skaven from wh fantasy are awesome
you can try to reskin the rabbit race into one though
what age are tieflings considered adults?
What is that called?
Alright thanks
Also thought of that sounded kinda cool
Age
Tieflings mature at the same rate as humans but live a few years longer.
I want to get started, but I have no idea where to start. Please help.

Help finding a game to join?
The lore is not the important part
Learning the rules and building a character (if just to practice) is
Yeah, every game is a universe of its own, so the official lore may or may not apply.
a lot of settings share more or less the same things
Hello! (I be new) I've been playing BG3 and it's been fun so far and it's gotten me interested in actual DnD. I made my character sheet in DnD beyond and I don't know what else I need to do.

Do light weapons let you use dex for damage or just finesse weapons
Check out those links and review the basic rules
mainly the ones that say finesse
The light property does not affect which modifier u use
finess does
light weapons just mean you can hold one in each hand
The properties are explained in the weapons section
Thats not what light does - the one handed or versatile property does
no
Light is a property required for Two Weapon Fighting
you can't hold two longswords without additional features
What about if a non finesse weapon is thrown then does it use dex
I dont want to bog down newcomers but this is incorrecr
you need the dual wielder feat to use two longswords
because longswords are not light weapons
A melee weapon must have the finesse property in order to use dex, UNLESS you have another feature that overrides it
A weapon such as a hand axe, for example, has the thrown weapon property and can be thrown to make a Ranged Weapon attack using STR
A Dagger also has the thrown property but ALSO the finesse property, so it uses dex
Longswords are versatile. You can attack with a longsword using only one hand.
Again, this is incorrect
You are failing to distinguish between HOLDING a weapon and ATTACKING with a weapon
telling a newcomer that they can use two longswords, weapons without the light property, without telling them about the dual wielder feat is disingenuous
you can hold two great axes - you cannot attack with them unless you put two hands on one and drop the other
Hold on
What?
Refer to the Two-Weapon Fighting Penalties table
Yes
k
I just need help finding a game
Let’s keep things civil, please.
I’m just so confused I’m super new and navigating this place is confusing for me
What specifically has you confused?
The more specific your question, the better we can answer.
The flow should go like like this:
-
Melee Weapon or Ranged Weapon?
-
if Melee, does it have finesse?
How to find a game I can join
I’m trying to traverse this place and it’s so confusing for me
#find-a-game has instructions for that.
If you’re looking to join as a player, the first thing it will suggest is to reply to games in #looking-for-players.
Just browse through what’s available, and if you find one of interest, you can reply in the attached thread or send the user a private message.
Ok
there is no penalties table.
if we actually need to do this argument we should go to #dnd-rules because its not productive anymore here
you're right, was looking for something regarding it and read something else
however the limitation for two weapon fighting requires both weapons to be light, that much is true
If it is a melee weapon, you use Strength. (Like a thrown Handaxe.)
If it is a ranged weapon, you use Dexterity. (Like a Longbow.) If it has Finesse, (so basically, only the Dart) you can use Strength or Dexterity.
If it is a melee weapon with the finesse property (Like a Dagger), you can use Strength or Dexterity.
The limitation for using the Two-Weapon Fighting bonus action is, yes.
But you can still hold two longswords, each in a hand, and make attacks with each of them - if you are a 5th level Fighter with the Extra Attack feature, you have two attacks and can make one attack with the left, and one with the right. The only thing Dual Wielder gives is being able to get the bonus action additional attack (and the bonus ac and the draw-stow-qol bonus)
As a nice round-off for the explanation of what was going on here
Yes, the context of the original statement was in regards to clarify what the Light property was
that it doesn't do anything to make a weapon use DEX instead of STR
Hi all! I'm a newbie looking for advice from experienced players. I have a character set up (Female half-elf druid, I know, so creative...) in D&D Beyond, but don't really know where to go from here. It would be cool to have someone look at her character sheet to see if it makes sense/needs adjusting. I would love to join a game, but would not be available until this weekend. Should I hold off on looking for one for now? Can I only apply to those that mention "new players welcome"? Thank you in advance 😄
You could share the sheet and get feedback in #character-discussion. Be mindful that you may not get to play the character as is depending on the DM’s setting and such; character concepts are usually better than a full-on character built.
As for applying to games, you can always ask the DM if they’re open to new players or not regardless of whether the ad specifies.
Great, thank you!
Looking for a group to play with i have played 1 time before used dnd beyond looking for some one to play with
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
so i havent played in like 3 years and got no clue what to do but i do have a basic understanding of the game. is anybody going to be in a game tomorrow around like 6pm pst where i could just sit in and get an idea of how it goes?
Check out #find-a-game
Sorry but I don't allow Internet strangers to my private Discord and listen in. You should check out the many actual plays of D&D sessions on Youtube and Twitch.

thank you!! I didn't realize oops 😬
Another question is it worth getting the physical books or is everything I need online? I'd probably wait for books until I know I can actually play with people cause I don't want it to go to waste, but still curious nonetheless.
all the basic rules are available online for free
You can buy physical and/or digital books, depending on your budget.
If you're starting out, don't rush to buy anything yet. The free Basic Rules, as ThePixelatedCat mentioned, has everything you need to start with.
ok thank you!! 🙂
thank you for being so helpful I appreciate it : )
On WOTC site are there any active promotional codes or are they solely just running a 40% off sale
On D&D Beyond there's only the 40% off sale
I'm saying on the wotc site for physical plus digital bundles but I assume it's the same promotional code wise
There are no promotional codes for dndstore.wizards.com
OK thought so just checking tyy
Do you start off with more gp the higher level you are?
I think there is a table somewhere that gives recommended starting hold for each level. Maybe in the DMG
Hi, new to the server. Where can I post my info so I can find a group?
Have a read of #find-a-game
That’s in the DMG, so “your” discretion means the DM’s.
hi hello im a new player with 0 experience? ive just seen some of my friends play it long time ago
i have looked at the find players thingy i cant find anyone that explicitly asked for new players i assume i have to dm the DM myself and explain my situation?
its just that i have a lose idea of what i want to play and thats about it i dont know much about sheets or what different races are or even what my character falls into as a class
do i just keep trying to find a DM who agrees to put up with my situation or i can find a campaign specifically for people like me somewhere

Take a look at some of the links above to start learning the basics! Not every game is going to explicitly say that they accept new players. Better to cast a wide net and see if any games you think look cool would be willing to accept you! Just be upfront and honest with the DM.
So when a spell's components say "V, S, M" (I know what each stands for), does it mean I need ALL of them or just one is enough?
What channel should I got to if I want to join an online game?
Head to #find-a-game for instructions on using the server’s LFG channels.
All of them.
thanks
If i were to start playing DND with some friends which set should I get? Essential or starter?
We will be very story focused and try to immerse more into The world so I think essential but I’m not sure yet
Starter, if you wanted to spend money, but you don’t have to as the Basic Rules are free and the starter adventurer Lost Mine of Phandelver is free on D&D Beyond.
We’re planning on doing physical though
So D&D beyond we prolly wont use
Because I saw this in the PHB:
"A spell’s components are the physical requirements you must meet in order to cast it. Each spell’s description indicates whether it requires verbal (V), somatic (S), or material (M) components. If you can’t provide one or more of a spell’s components, you are unable to cast the spell."
Last sentence: "if you can't provide ONE or MORE..."
You can still play it in person. You would just need a laptop or tablet. If you want to not do that, I still recommend a starter set.
If you needed all of them, wouldn't it say something like "if you can't provide ALL the components" instead of "ONE or more"?
Alright thanks I’ll prolly use D&D beyond but only I as a DM would need it right?
Right. So say it requires Verbal, Somatic, AND Material. Missing out on any ONE of those means no spell.
some people like to use it for character sheets too, its an easy option.
Ah thanks
Oh, I see, I misunderstood it, my bad
when the group I'm in played to starter set, it took us around 4/5 months of fortnightly sessions to make our way through it. was definitely worth the 15/20 bucks!
plus there's a new campaign that's set there on pre order, it will be probably be released by the time you're done
If you are looking for a good podcast to listen to, I would reccomend either The Chosen ones or Tales of the dtinky dragon. TOTSD is more comedy focused but the play is very good. TCO is my favorite podcast and it has some comedy, but is also very story driven and is more serious. Both are great for you to listen to. I am also new to dnd and just by listening I've learned what some of the stats mean and what races get what. Try and listen to them, i promice taht they will be fun!
I’m a half ofc monk, could someone help me figure out what to put in the box that says ‘other profiencies and languages’
Half-orcs know common and orc.
Your character may know more languages depending on their background.
Your character's skill proficiencies are the ones from their background.

How do I use detect thoughts spell my group is using homebrew characters and I want to be able to read minds then turn into the person they love the most
If you read the spell, it'll explain exactly how it works
I read it but I don’t understand what it says
So sorcerers get the spell100% of that time?
That’s like all I need to know who gets to use it
Bards, Sorcerers, and Wizards have access to it from their spell lists (not sure if anyone has access to it from an expanded spell list). If you choose to learn the spell when you level up and make it one of your known spells (Bard and Sorcerer) or have it learned and prepare it for the day (Wizard) you may use the spell using a 2nd level spell slot (or higher)
What don't you understand about it?
A spell's description say what it can do (and sometimes what it can't do). Nothing more. Nothing less.
That's more a question of which classes get which spells, and when - and that varies from class to class. Sorcerors have it on their spell list - it is a spell that they can choose to learn when they level up (or for some other reason get a spell). Sorcerers don't need to "prepare" spells, so a Sorcerer who has learned the spell, and has spell slots remaining, can cast it at any time. Conversely, wizards have to prepare a list of spells every day, leaving some behind in their spellbook, so a wizard might know it, but not prepare it, so they wouldn't always be able to cast it.
Out of curiosity, are you starting this game at a higher level? I remember you stopping by yesterday to mention this was a new game you were joining today.
Ok so my plan is my group has a homebrew class called channeling so I wanna read there mind find there family change into them and rob them is that possible ? I’m still new to dnd
That might be a question to ask your DM, and would still probably by limited by the constraints of the spell.
If it’s a homebrew class, you’d need to ask your DM what the limits of it are.
I would also suggest rereading how the spell works as there may be some confusion as to what you can do with it (or the fact that probing deeper into a target's thoughts can cause them to become aware of what is going on)
I’d also suggest discussing this with the players themselves before you do it to them.
So if I’m a criminal what skill proficiencies and languages do I know?
Yea Ik Ik
The background will tell you what skills you are proficient in and how many languages you may learn, if any.
I won’t need to probe deeper just what’s on there mins I’ll fulfill that
And rob them 🙂
again, I suggest rereading the spell and what its limitations are.
I read it u can read what’s on peoples minds
Whatever the background lists.
Surface level thoughts; meaning, only what they are immediately thinking about at the very moment. That does not guarantee that they are thinking about their family as you seem to be seeking from them
This is confusing
Are you a player trying to rob another player?
Are you a DM trying to send an NPC to rob your player?
No im a playing trying to rob anything I want from anyone
By probing there mine for anything that makes them uneasy then turning into that thing
And taking money
D&D is typically a collaborative game, and it's important for everyone in the group to have fun.
Or something from them
And are YOU playing this homebrew class or is someone else?
Again, I would advise discussing this with your fellow players before trying to use it against them.
Lest you accidentally ruin someone else's fun.
If they're on board, then nothing wrong with it.
Whereas if they're not on board and you wait to find out the hard way...
Stealing from other PCs may be a big issue at many tables. This is something should be discussed at a session 0.
Your fun may not be fun for others and is a good way to be kicked out from a table for being disruptive.
I recall seeing a fun solution to that fantasy: the rogue gives the other players (targets) items or trinkets that the rogue then tries to steal back at a later time or whenever they can.
With that method you get consent, collaboration, and the ability to do the stealing.
Stealing this (with consent please)
Take it.
What are you trying to do?

For the other profiencies and languages box do I put the skill and tool proficiencies from being a criminal in there? Or is that section only for language?
Skills go on the first page of a paper character sheet
Tool prof stick them anywhere
Saving throw proficiencies also go in the saving throw section instead.
So "other" would be tool, weapon, and armor proficiencies.
Is a Pixie a "Person" or a "Monster" for "X Person/Monster" Spells?
Pixies aren’t a playable race, so it will be classified by the author of the homebrew being used.
Someone told me that all humanoids are affected by X Person and all non-Humanoids (Fey, for example) are only affected by "X Monster"
Fairies are Fey, tho. Likely it’ll be the same.
Hold Person: Only Humanoid creature type
Hold Monster: Any creature type
ah, I see
The playable races will describe the creature type. Humans, elves, and dwarves are Humanoid while the Fairy is Fey.
But it's probably not that much of a stretch to homebrew a pixie to be a humanoid, considering they are, well, humanoid xD
You can do anything with your DM’s approval, but considerably less without it.
You can use the Fairy race (although they're Small size).
Not all humanoids are "Humanoids". Yeah, confusing, I know. ;p
I feel like there should be some rules for mixing tags for hybrid monsters and pc race/heritage etc.
The playable races will specifically say their creature type.
Humanoid-shape =/= Humanoid creature type.
Like, maybe "Vampire+" means "has all of the advantages and disadvantages of vampires regardless of other tags" and "Vampire-" means "only has the advantages and disadvantages of vampires when not disallowed by other types". "Vampire* - list of explicit powers/resistances etc." Anyway, just my wishlist item.
5E moved away from multiple creature type (and sub-types) with a set list of resistances/invulnerabilities/vulnerabilities like 3.5E had (this is moving away from the purpose of this channel). Should head to #dnd-discussion instead because it will just confuse new players.
👍
Is there a difference in flavor between having +X on a throw vs. having advantage on a throw?
That's a mechanical difference, not a flavor one.
If you're asking how that plays out in the game narratively, you could make a distinction, but I don't see most folks add flavor to saving throws in particular.
So how to use them is really a balancing decision, not an flavor decision, right?
I wonder how high +x must be to be better than a throw with advantage. Guess I'll have to do some math
I know it's been discussed elsewhere on the server. Likely #dm-discussion rather than here, since that's well beyond newcomer territory.
I see, thank you!

How good/bad could a Tiefling fighter/battle master be?
As good/bad as any other race fighter/battle master. It's how the player plays it.
So the racial bonuses don’t matter to much?
¯_(ツ)_/¯
DnD 5e race features don't really interact with class features very often, so it usually doesn't matter!
It's a minute difference in the over scheme of things.
👍🏻 thanks
So play whatever sounds cool!
Hello.
Hello
okay so this is less of a mechanics question more of a logistics one. what is psychic damage? like, in a literal sense, how does it translate to damage. is it the classic 'magic that physically affects the mind' sorta deal, like as in taking psychic damage would feel like a really bad headache? or is it more of an abstract thing?
Well I'm very new so I'm not sure but I found this... if it helps at all. This isn't from a dnd source but it sounded helpful. Sorry if it isn't.
A form of assault on humans an animals which is alleged to cause physical or mental illness or injury. Such attacks may be as the result of the action of a human sorcerer, or of malevolent spirits, or with the latter acting under the influence of the former. They may also be the result of action by a human during out-of-body experience. Symptoms experienced may include feeling a crushing weight accompanied by paralysis (the "hag syndrome"), feelings of overwhelming dread, the presence of bruises on the body after sleep, and poltergeist phenomena.
Psychic damage is something that affects your mind. Narratively it's however you want to describe it.
Could be an overwhelming of the senses. Discordant voices/sounds, hallucinations, sharp cranial pain, deep overpowering emotions that cripple your will to live.
That's all just flavoring, though.

Dnd is a roleplaying game built on a system of rules; learning to play inevitably means learning the rules
You dont need to memorize them
You dont need to learn them all quickly
hello! I just joined the server and I was wondering if anyone was able to explain how the D&D dice set works?? I just had my first game and I wasn’t active that much, but when I was I was confused when it came to actions and such in battle— is there a channel for that?
This is the channel for new players to ask questions about the game.
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Why would the DM knock your character out in a bar? Did your PC assault the bartender?
No combat initiative?
Red flag.
Was it some sort of cut-scene for storytelling purposes
The point of the D&D game is to have fun - if you’re not having fun, it’s time to stop the game and work with the group to fix that problem. But sometimes the solution is to go find a different group to play with.
Finding a good group is like dating — there's going to be ghosting, drama, and incompatiblity.
Ive never found a good group in all my years of trying to find one so Im checking out solo TTRPGs.
That's why I'm a married forever DM.
Hello everyone! I hope we are all having fun.
Yeah but I've looked at other systems and ran some and now I've an OSR/ Delta Green itch.
But fun nonetheless.
I'm entirely and completely new to DnD.
I have no knowledge of how things work around here or how a game is played, but I only know there are different classes and subclasses you can use and work for to get
Is there like a video that captures/tackles a beginner information to a new player without it being overwhelming?
there are the handbook helper videos linked in the pinned messages
oooh, thank you.
In dnd terms is a dungeon usually referring to a cave system?
Dungeon is anything that's an interior, be it a cave, sewers, castle ruins, or a royal palace.
It's actually a complicated question because there is also the theoretical "dungeon" being a representation of challenges in the game that the characters must overcome.
Just a building can be a dungeon?
I never been in a dungeon in dnd
Yes it could be considered that
Theoretical dungeon?
"Dungeon" is a carry-over term from the early edition where PCs would explore literal dungeons.
As in the mental concept of challenges in the game world the characters must overcome rather than a building to be explored.
Which dnd edition is like known as the anime world of dnd
There isn’t one
The editions are like sequels, not seperate worlds
Dnd doesn’t work well for anime
I don’t think dnd has just one world right?
Considering each homebrew world out there...
No
I’m just saying that that’s not what the editions are
Not considering the homebrews i mean like Curse of Strahd and Ghosts of Saltmarsh are two different worlds
Correct - two different settings/worlds. One is Forgotten Realms (although they provide tools to place Saltmarsh in other settings like Greyhawk), and Barovia, a domain of dread.
I'm not very new but I need help creating a character if someone can vc for a sec and help me create my Tasha's couldren blind fighter (on paper so I will have to turn on my camera I guess)
Have a look in #character-discussion
Thanks
Looking for a DM and other players. Still can’t figure out how to put that 😭 I have a character
To reframe this
Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition, at the end of the day, is just a collection of rules and stat blocks
While WOTC has published “official” settings and lore, players and DMs can take this system and slap any setting they want on it
A liveplay show like Dimension 20 has literally done D&D in magic new york, a fantasy high school, and actual candyland
The only limit is your imagination and the amount of work your DM wants to put in
You could even say…thats the point of DnD
Take this system and use it to transport your table to your collective imagination
I’ve never actually used dnd beyond to play dnd, I have the app and sign in but I mostly just use roll 20, how different is dnd beyond from roll 20?
Dnd Beyond is for two things:
Digital library for books
Or
Digital character sheet w/ dice roller
It’s not a vtt like roll20
You don’t play “on” dnd beyond
Oh, yeah that makes sense, thank you.
So I figured out something about myself. I overthink my characters. I was making my first character and was doing fine until I got to where it asked about friends, enemies, backstory, etc. I blanked just staring for so long. I started to make another, same thing happened. It's been fun.
Most of thst stuff is there as a guide, but its not mandatory
Bro thinks its wrong to put effort into your character
Honestly, only focus on backstory when it comes to extra stuff like that, after which you can write bonds, flaws, enemies, factions, etcetera etcetera based on that
Writing too much can limit your options for growth
I'd say it is good to have some connections to the world around you so your dm can give you a more taylored experience but it isn't a must
I have gone into a game with no backstory, just stats and a funny voice
At the end of the day, it's about your experience
if you enjoy it, then that's all that matters
Don't different dms build different kinda worlds? What if you switch to random dms? Do you have to rewrite part of your dnd character's story?
Well having a family member who has done interesting things can carry over
besided, switching dms might mean you have to change backstories anyway
even get a new character entirely
yeah
anyway, you usually go through your character with your dm so they should bring up any issues
Hi there! I'm DMing my first campaign and I figured this server seemed like a cool place to join! Pleased to meet you all!
hi
Sup everyone I’m a real newcomer to dnd my friends told me there where giant monsters and that gave me ideas of pacific rim but I’m doubtful it’s anything like that but none the less I’m a “don’t knock it till I try it” kinda guy so here I am to test the waters of dnd for the vary first time

Hi
Welcome!
Hi all First played DnD back in my younger days back in 84 has it changed much if at all?
A decent bit, but you’ll find a bit of overlap
Well the current edition is called 5th Edition and I'd say it has changed a bit
It's changed quite a bit, but the core premise should be familiar to you
84 would have been ad&d 1e probably
and if you're unaware, we're in 5e right now
ty all Im sure i will pick it up again and all i remember back then was the great painting sessions (of the old lead figures) between adventures
painting minis is still very much a thing! the #dnd-minis channel has a bunch of photos of figures people have painted, if you're interested 🙂
ty will check it out im currently going through my pile of shame from a different game genre
Yo, im new to DnD and really want to learn the genre. Dont know how anything works and that. I have a character made
Hey I live in South Australia, I'm fairly new to DnD an would like to get a group together to play DnD over Discord with DnD Beyond would anyone in South Australia be interested?

I got a question, I am going to DM for the group I’m starting in but I need a Screen or what it’s called and I found the official one for like 25$ but the essentials box has one as well in it and costs 19$ so I’m wondering is the one in essential a worse one or?
You only need the screen for two reasons
- To reference the information on the inside
- To hide information such as notes/minis/dice rolls
As far as the difference between the two screens; they have similar information but the one in the essentials kit is slightly smaller (to fit in the box) and isn't printed on as heavy card (it's a little floppy)
So wait
If I say, did a monk/fighter multiclass, and both classes were at level 4, would that mean I'm level 8?
Yes
yeah, since you've gotten to a total of 8 levels, you spent 4 on fighter, 4 on monk
DnD Beyond is making their own VTT.
Hello everyone! Soo I‘m a DnD baby-player. Never played it before. Never seen it etc. but I was interested since a while and now I‘d like to learn how to play and especially become a Dungeon Master. :D Any tips on how to get started?
I learn best with learning by doing
Sure thing! The most reliable place to start is to take a look at the basic rules, listed below 👇

Hi everyone, im a new DnD player. I have never played before but got interested after watching it on youtube since 2 months ago and I'd like to learn how to play. I dont have any ambitions of becoming a dungeon master, just want to join the community. So where can i start?
Check two posts above you for some good places to start! Plenty of helpful links there to get acquainted with the basic rules

Hi 😄
i recommend reading the book called D&D Basic Rules, its available for free as a PDF online, just search up "D&D Basic Rules PDF"
No need to search it’s linked in the pins of this channel
I also much prefer the D&D Beyond version to a PDF. 😅

Do we DMs the dm we want to play with?
Are you asking about the ads in #looking-for-players ?
Yea
There should be a thread under each ad to respond in
Unless they have said direct message them in the game description
Ok, thanks for the help
how does one play dungeons and dragons? I've always wanted to get into it but I'm clueless :')
Have you had a look at the free basic rules?
Never hurts to join a Oneshot and learn as you go either

The specifics vary from group to group.
Ultimately, you just get together with your friends and start telling a story together.
But you can check out the introductory demo linked above for a general idea of how the game works. ☝️
Dont touch ‘Homebrew’ games until you go through a short story first to get the idea.
Generally you just need to understand that different groups have different vibes, understand whether or not you'll get along given their vibe, and understand that bad D&D is ALWAYS worse than no D&D
Ok thank you but do you know how I can get a session?
Well, this DM that helped me start like 3 days ago showed me, but im not sure if they wanna run another side story. since theres already like 2 others in my group and we all ready to play it.
Oh ok
HOWEVER. i beleive that you can find a wonderful group if you search around in… #find-a-game
Thank you
Not a problem man. happy adventuring 🙂
OK so this is a question not answered In the basic rules... how do I...do it. Like where do I start?
you're gonna have to be a little more specific
are you asking how to start learning the rules, or how to get a group and start playing dnd together?
You find a group (or start one) and learn the rules (or vice versa). It depends if you're looking to play with friends in person, with strangers in person, or online with either.
There's no way to start other than to jump in. Find a newbie friendly group, ask for help building a character. Personally my characters tend to be a basic idea before I actually play, and then I tend to feel them out as I go.
Don't go in with any grand expectations of either the group at hand or of yourself; just feel your way through it
from my experience best way to learn any game is to play it and see rules in practice and I assume that DnD is no different
The big asterisk* here is that understanding the basic rules will make that first time you play SO much easier for everyone involved. Remember: D&D is a collaborative game, and you've gotta put in enough effort to respect other people's time.
Asking a question or two isn't usually a problem, and even tables full of veterans will stop to examine the rules from time to time, but you don't wanna hold everyone up all game because you haven't read up!
That's why I think understanding the situation matters. If you're playing with a group of personal friends who are also new, then you can learn together. If you're playing with strangers, you're probably better served by at least trying to learn some of the basics since there's no shortage of resources. Someone who hasn't put forth any effort prior to the game doesn't make a compelling case versus someone who has—and there are so many players out there.
exactly! It's a bit tricky to contribute to the game in any context if you don't know what your options are
Can a new player to D&D play online with strangers? I've only played one game but I loved it but do to living in a VERY rural area my options are limited to a 2 hour drive once a month to play with some friends. But I really want to start playing a few times a week.
Yep, that is definitely possible.
Absolutely!
?tag new online
That article gives you an overview of how it happens, and we have channels here to find fellow players/DMs. See #find-a-game to get started on that score.
Ok cool, thanks guys. I knew people played online but I was worried since I don't have much experience that it might not be a good idea
Beginner games happen online just like they do in person. It's a bit different, but not dramatically so. You just have to find a group that's willing to bring you in with whatever experience level you have!
Awesome! Thanks for the help 🤠
We had to reschedule my first campaign like 3 times now is this part of the dnd experience?
sometimes, yes
hey !! happy to join this discord :00 just wanted to give a quick hello. ive participated in one half-planned campaign and still dont understand that much, but im learning :]
Welcome!
I had an idea (That might be very cliche but I'm a first time DM) that there's an island in my world that's actually some sort of creature that's going to be awakened later, but I'm trying to decide what that monster should be. Something big enough to have a city on it
Might want to bounce ideas off of fellow DMs in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building (when you're creating whole new D&D worlds/settings)
Okie! Thank you!
I'm doing something similar with the slumbering god Kazagoroth. But also the main advice for a first time DM would be - don't try to rush into making your own bespoke world. If your world fits with D&D's main aesthetic, then you could drop in Dragons of Stormwreck Isle quite easily, and it will give you a nice tutorial while you develop the rest of your world.
Thank you everyone for your advice
welcome!
Hi!
Hi I’m very new to D&D
I’ve made my character sheet (mostly) and am just checking out the official Beyond server
Well welcome!
Hello 👋
Is there a place to post my DND character sheet?
For discussion and review we have #character-discussion
No worries! Also I'd suggest checking out id:browse to see all the possible channels you can access. And welcome to the server!
Thanks squared
Was wondering if there’s a place I could post my character sheet pdf for people to review?
If you mean as images or files, generally no unless the PDF is generated by DnDBeyond
It is
And yes that’s what I meant, sorry for any confusion
post a link to it then
You can link direct to DbDBeyond character sheet URLs and it should show just fine
Oooh. Sorry I’m all new to D&D
Would anyone be willing to teach a newbie? I've been wanting to get into this for a while but can't find anyone to teach or any groups that accept new players
there's a lot more than is easily teachable, youll have to do some reading of the rules yourself
theyre linked in the pinned messages
Yeah, I’d suggest starting with the links there, then if you have any specific questions, the folks here are happy to answer.
so what’s a good build I should consider making
What kind of play style are you interested in?
I’m new to the game so I’m open to suggestions
what sounds fun to you?
usually I build characters to the type of D&D game my group is playing and to something I find fun or interesting
hello!
Do you want to hit things or shoot them from a far. Sneak or heal. Use magic or your words? @dusky wave
hi
Idk in Skyrim I played a dark elf sneaking archer
i joined the server, and im also a newcomer to the game itself
Rouge could work
range or fight as well
Okay
as a fighter you could take the range fighting style and leather armour and a bow
well welcome to the game
Ok
thank you 😄
rangers usually start with bows and you can easily give your rogue a bow
no problem
okay so proficiency is about what you are trained in
if you have training in a skill, with certain tools or weapons
Hi
that training represents a plus @carmine niche
hi
I was told by my friend that it was possible to be a necromancer and I was wondering if I could get some help with that
there is a necromancy subclass for wizard
clerics can also do a bit of necromancy as well
so how do i implement that on dnd beyond?
I think you would have to buy the subclass
the necromancy subclass isnt inculded in the basic rules, you would need to buy the subclass
oooooooo
its $1.99 on its own
there are spells that you can use for free though
or you can get the players handbook which includes it and a ton of other subclasses
the necromancy tag for spells will show you what you can use, just make sure that you've set the source to basic rules
k
you still there @carmine niche? At level 1 you get a +2 to your proficiency which, if you are trained to use your specific weapon means you get the +3 to hit from your strength plus +2 to hit from proficiency giving you a +5 to hit. You roll a d20 add +5 to it and that is your to hit roll. proficiency is not, I repeat not, added to damage
?tag new proficiency
Proficiencies
Your proficiencies define many of the things your character can do particularly well, from using certain weapons to telling a convincing lie.
The table that appears in your class description shows your proficiency bonus, which is +2 for a 1st-level character. Proficiency with weapons, skills, tools, and saving throws let you add your proficiency bonus to applicable rolls, making you more likely to succeed. Spellcasters add their proficiency bonus to their spell attack modifier and spell save DC as well.
Your character also needs to be proficient with armor and shields to wear and use them effectively. There are drawbacks to wearing armor or carrying a shield if you lack the required proficiency.
I don't think the person is around anymore but thank you for showing me that command
Hi everyone! I’m a super new dnd player and I have no clue what I’m doing 😄 if anyone wants to help me I would be super thankful!
Hi, what kind of help do you need?
I honestly don’t even know where to start omg. My roommate is super into dnd and it seems interesting and I have no idea where to start

So I have created a character and play exactly one one shot campaign that was super short. What’s the best way to proceed after reviewing the rules?
you can do 2 things
either look at your character and modify them a bit
to personalise them
Generally, you create a character after joining a campaign as your character may not work with the group/setting
or look into making a new character
that is true
yeah, I'm used to my players just using any character
I forgot about that
Yes I understand! I just mean I have created one so I kinda get the character building process on dnd beyond?
So it sounds like you just need to look for a game
looks like someone is already one step ahead of me
Haha okay! I’m guessing I can find some beginner friendly ones lol
hopefully
if you can't find any through that, I suggest seeing if you have a local board game shop or uni as they often run beginner games
Okay! Thank you all so much!
no problem
I'm not sure what to do next. I just made a character on dnd beyond. I'm Not sure what to do next. I'm not sure why I'm lost. I think I may be overthinking this

Hey , I'm new too
here you go @elder cove this should help
Hi new I'm Dad LUL
And confused
Perfect! I know it's definitely overwhelming at first, but I'd love to play and someday be a part of a group.
Literally trying to make a DnD off a game I used to play
You might try playing D&D for what it is before trying to fit other game styles on to it - but regardless, chase your bliss!
I thought about loose game style
Inspired by Dungeons and Daddies because of the storyline and the players making how the story progress
what are you confused about
My only thing I really wanna know and learn is Challenge Rating
Oooh... that's an interesting one but perhaps a bit more advanced than for newcomers!
You may want to check with the folks in #dm-discussion as CR rating is usually more important for DMs to understand or at least have a feel for.
I don't know what to do next and how to start playing , I just finished creating a character on DND beyond
You can also share the link to your character in #character-discussion if you want someone to look it over.
have a look in our #find-a-game channels to find a group
or you can do this
CR indicates the general threat level of a creature. A monster of a given CR is a moderate challenge for four adventurers of the same level.
So four 3rd-level adventurers are typically a good match for a CR 3 monster.
Ah alright
?tag new cr
Challenge Rating (CR)
A monster's challenge rating tells you how great a threat the monster is. An appropriately equipped and well-rested party of four adventurers should be able to defeat a monster that has a challenge rating equal to its level without suffering any deaths. For example, a party of four 3rd-level characters should find a monster with a challenge rating of 3 to be a worthy challenge, but not a deadly one.
I found my proficiencies
Light armor, medium armor, shields. Martial weapons, simple weapons. Dice set, vehicles.
so yeah you get +2 when using martial and simple weapons and dice sets and vehicles
Martial weapons + simple weapons = all weapons
proficiency in armour and shields just means you can use them with out disadvantages
What does armor class 11 mean
?tag new ac
Armor Class (AC)
Your Armor Class (AC) represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle. As a baseline, a character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier, but characters often wear armor and shields, use spells, or have class or race features to improve their AC.
When making an attack, the total of your attack roll is compared to the target’s AC. If your total equals or exceeds their AC, the attack hits.
it means someone needs to get 11 or hhigher to hit you
I'm sorry I've just never seen any of this
Is your armour definitely equiped?
I don't have any equipped but I have a set
Yeah, 11 is generally low.
I have half plate
equip it
I got it from the king as a reward
That should give you 16 AC, I think, with the armor equipped.
yeah
(I’m assuming you have +1 DEX)
anyway when you roll to hit something you use strength and proficiency added together and then added to your roll, if that total is equal or over the AC of what you are attacking, you hit
Is the DnDbeyond character builder not working for anyone else
In what way is it not working?
Not loading ^
you're to hit is +3 (strength) and +2 (proficiency), making it a +5 over all
wait when you said you rolled a 20, was it on dnd beyond?
Working for me
Oh yeah there it is
It was on the dice maiden thing we're using ^
wait what there's Rick and Morty content in DND?
There was…
I just go in the character editor and add/remove stuff right?
Maybe. What exactly are you trying to add/remove?
The items I've used and items I've gained during the campaign
You can manage items either in the character editor or directly on the sheet itself in the Inventory tab.
getting back into after a few years. have a dm and another player as well as myself. we are looking for one more person any experience does anybody want to join us?
will most likely be tomorrow or this weekend
anybody willing to answer some questions from a first time DM 😭
maybe try in #find-a-game
sure
can i dm you?
sure
Iam a new player I don't know which class to pick playing with my friends they pick assassin, mage and hybrid paladin
First, have you read the basic rules to get an idea how stuff works?
Second, have you played any classes at all or none?
I’d recommend a martial class to start, so Fighter is most straight forward, barbarian or rogue or monk if u want something different
Ok
i looked there but it says i dont have permissions to speak in there. how do i make a post in there?
nvm wrong one my bad
I think you have to click the tags that are relevant
How do I add a thing to the looking for dm place?
Ah thanks

Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
Thank you.

So if you see one you’re interested in, it never hurts to ask.
How to submit a thread in looking for players
Iam new can anyone help me with the grind
Read the instructions in #find-a-game
How to spilt my ability points in durid
You want to focus on your wisdom, followed by constitution and dexterity
Hello. I never played D&D before, I just got into it through BG3 and the recent D&D movie. I want to start playing, but what is the bare minimum info I should know?
You should start by reading the basic rules, linked in the pinned messages
You’ll find a lot of it familiar from bg3, but there’s a few changes so you should check everything, don’t make any assumptions
OK, thanks for the quick response.
All good
Both BG3 and the movie took many many creative and adaptive liberties (anarchies even) when looking at the rules for the game (as of current)
so the general idea is there, yes, but the specifics, like... wildshaping into an owlbear, or 4 fireballs in a turn, isn't there.
Anyway the max you can do in 5e is 2 in one turn
You can do 2 fireballs and one firebolt tho
that though yeah
The point is, the TTRPG is both somewhat more constrained but also... basekit balanced, to points.
Yeah
Until you start actually looking at the maximum potentially of stuff
Then it falls to pieces
And even without optimisation the balance isn’t the greatest
Non-op players just probably won’t care about there being glaringly better options
I have following issue, I am playing in a session where pretty much every character is squishy and on the backline. On top of that our only front liner pretty much died and he would have to create a new char but he doesnt want to go to the front once again and I wonder if I could somewhat take the role of soaking damage with my build atm.
I am a crossbow fighter lvl 5, we all have an extra feat on our table so I picked crossbow master and I do not mind being upclose while still making use of Sharpshooter. My stats are 18 on dex and 18 on constitution so I can make use of my goliath skill and save myself from high amounts of damage. Now the question:
should I multiclass into barbarian at level 6 with unarmed defence so my AC increases by 2 (16 to 18) and I gain the rage resistances for being more on the front? And is that my best bet at getting tankier? (I have 13 str)
anyway newcomers chat, BG3 and the movie are good introductions to the concept of DND and how an adventure can go
You could take 2 levels of barbarian, would give you better ac, resistances while raging, and reckless attack
Don’t take it any further than that tho
Would be better to just buy better armor
Also what subclass are you?
Battle master could make good use of "parry"
I am a battle master
Yeah
If you can afford plate armor, it's better than wasting 2 entire levels on barb
I just took a look at reckless attack and it works only for melee strengh based attacks :/
so it would be only 1 level
Ah didn’t realise that
Do you have a cleric in your party ?
I should have also note that I watch a lot of D&D videos on Youtube, stuff like Jorphden's D&D lore, and Zee Bashew's Animated spellbook.
Both great channels
Parry manuever uses dex to reduce the damage you take. And since you're already dex maxing it's good manuever option.
If you have cleric you could have them prepare Shield of Faith which is a level 1 bonus action spell. Very useful
Sly Flourish and Matt Colville have good channels for beginner dms that I'd recommend
You already have a very good damage build tho
I think I did not get that manouver but I will pick it the next time
Yeah it's pretty decent. Though only works vs melee attacks
yeh... maybe I can convince the previous front liner to pick cleric? xD
Well you don't necessarily need a frontline anyway
Tanking in DnD doesn't really exist. Just kill the enemy faster = less damage taken.
Is spellcasting class just ur class?
The class that you have spellcasting from
So if you’re not multiclassing then yes it’s just your class
in what context?
On the character sheet
where specifically
where is this said, what feature, etc
I’m pretty sure pixelated cat got it its just on one of the sheets that shows where you put all your spells idk if dndbeyond has it its on one of the sheets they let you download for free
I am new
Welcome!
You want #ddb-support
Oh sorry
S'all good
i actually have no clue where to get started with dnd
Well like with most games, it helps to read the game rules...
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Then maybe watch some folks playing the game - check YouTube/Twitch fo D&D liveplay/streams.
Just understand that these are more for entertainment then "her's how to play D&D".
Then try making a character sheet (refer to the free basic rules)

Hey everyone, I'm somewhat new to dnd and just wanted to get started with the basics. I'm interested in both playing and DMing. My experiences have been somewhat scuffed so far
same, expect i havent ever even touched a game seasion at all...and im kinda unsure/nervus to do so
and i cant think of a good DND characer to make...and idk how to translate my existing OCs over
Just think of a class that fits them and keep what makes them them while also being believable for dnd. And I was nervous too still am but everything's going to be great
yea...but what do i do if they arent any of the speices aviable but...stright up custom made speices
but i dont wanna make a new race yet since i don want to be the "OP guy"
Well describe them, or if your DM is okay with it just copy the stats closest to them from an existing race. For all we know your oc could be a strange polymorphed or cursed or just plain experimented on version of some race
yea
Also there's a lot of stuff out there, I'm still learning about new races, sub races, sub classes, etc so you might find a good fit
ye i could
..even tho i feel i should atlest learn and try the basics and slowly get comfy wearing those "Shoes"
Translating concepts/characters outside of D&D into the game rarely matches up perfectly, so you just make it as close as you can within the confines of the options available.
Character creation is a really effective way to get comfortable too as it's very fun and let's you be very creative and rewarded for doing so
yea

Crazy
There are many playable races in the PHB and Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse
I would check them out and reflavor the closest match. It is highly unlikely you will need to homebrew a race
ye, i got that noted
can you just dismiss concentration on spell and make spell effect dissapear even though in description it doesnt say thatg you can dissapear spell?
Yes your character can drop concentration on a spell willingly and thus end its effects.
so if a hit is above your ac it hits, and if it's below your ac it misses. what if an attack roll and the ac are perfectly equal?
It hits.
"Meets it beats it."
So if a roll meets or exceeds a target number, it succeeds.
alright, thanks
Hello
Some spells require you to maintain concentration in order to keep their magic active. If you lose concentration, such a spell ends. [...] You can end concentration at any time (no action required).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Concentration
on d&d beyond site, how do you remove the Unarmed Strike?
That's probably a better question for #ddb-support, but click on it, open the Customize section in the side menu, then uncheck "Display as Attack".
another question... can you start casting ritual end of dnd session and have it done in another episode if there is sort of time skip?
thanks!
In theory, yeah.
But that's something you'd probably want to discuss with your DM at the time.
That would be very much up to your Dungeon Master to determine if it's possible and reasonable.
Welcome!
Question about real world requirement to join a game on Roll20: If I am a player (not DM) do I need to buy the module to participate in the game?
No, you don't need to buy the module. That's on the DM.
Thank you, sir.
if anything, purchasing the module would be a bad thing. Make sure to avoid reading any modules you're playing through, to avoid spoiling the story for yourself
What are the most important stats for a wizard? Intelligence, obviously, but how should I prioritise my other stats?
there isn't really an exact answer for that. It's more about how you want to play your character
I would say wisdom should be next prioritised, because wizards have proficiencies in intelligence and wisdom saving throws
but after that, it's your choice
and even then, you don't have to do that
I think a wizard should have some wisdom as well, not just intelligence. For RP reasons if nothing else.
Not that foolish wizards are unheard of, and are probably quite hilarious.
Yeah, for the most part you'll see wizards sporting intel and wisdom
Oh yeah, it's always fun to play a sort of unorthodox character
Dex and con are good for wizards too. Dex because you probably can’t wear armour, at least starting out. Con because more hit points.
Agreed, although it's hard to be good in intelligence, wisdom, dex and con all at once
Safe to say it's more a question of what stats don't really matter to a wizard, and that would be strength
charisma could also be minimised, and plays into the idea of a wizard who's spent more time in the company of books than people
My dnd beyond dice rolls gave my character 12, 14, 16, 16, 16, 18. Quite good stats I think. I'm considering changing it, but I went with str 12, dex 14, con wis char 16, and int 18.
Those are some excellent dice rolls
Like, really excellent lol
I’d switch cha and dex but it probably won’t matter that much
I just hope a DM doesn't make me reroll. It was the first roll I did while creating the character.
Some DMs do prefer if you roll stats in front of them
I Just started looking for a game. I'll reroll if the DM wants me to, but I'm keeping a backup of this character.
Yeah, rolling stats live completely negates the possibility of fudging the rolls
why might some DM look for new players?
if they don’t have enough?
i asumed they are talking about lack of experience playing dnd
so I personally prefer if people joining my games do so without already having a character made, so we can talk stuff through together if need be and make sure they fit in the world. But that’s me - other DMs will have different preferences. I hope you find one that suits you and you get to use your cool wizard!
Thanks 🙂 When I find a DM, I'll modify my character if I need to. But I'll keep a copy of this character as a "template" for all future games, modifying it to suit the needs of other games.
I just hope having 2 wizards in a party isn't a problem
In case they already have a wizard.
Can a wizard ever be a decent healer? IMO, a wizard should be able to learn all kinds of spells, but they seem more damage focused in D&D from what little info I've gathered
Wizards can’t heal
They’re not really damage focused
They can do okay damage, but buffing and control are their main niches
If wizards could do everything they’d be even more unbalanced
Healing is all they can’t do
Might be wise to make a version of the character with ability scores using the standard array or point-buy methods.
Oh and btw only ever playing one class may get a bit boring eventually
If that's what the DM uses, it should only take a few minutes to make the changes. That would be the most balanced and fair way to ensure that nobody gets OP rolls or crap rolls.
I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. 🙂
I'm changing some of my proficiencies then. I was thinking medicine, but if there are no healing spells I'd rather go with something else.
Medicine doesn’t generally help with healing spells
Medicine is for non-magical healing
Which is…. Not common
Medicine as a skill is only for checks, isn’t it?
Wait no healing kits don’t need medicine checks
K basically medicine checks are for non magical healing
I was hoping for my wizard to have some utility, but medicine seems a waste if it isn't used much. I wanted to be able to patch up a wound during combat, then cast a healing spell as well.
What that is is up to your dm as far as I can tell
Maybe have a look at clerics or bards then
Paladins have some healing elements, but clerics and bards would definitely have more
I'm really set on playing a wizard. I just wanted the option of having a med kit as well as 1 or 2 healing spells. I haven't looked at any of the spells unlocked after level 1, or if they're all just the same spells that I already have access to on dndbeyond
As far as I’m aware, there are no healing spells for wizards
Nothings stopping your character from carrying a Merlot around though
*medkit
A wine-drunk wizard is a funny thought as well
Haha, that it is
You could try multiclassing a cleric-wizard?
That’ll give you access to some healing spells
That sounds like a cool idea
For your first character, multiclassing might be a little confusing though
Especially spellcasters
Make sure to check out a guide for it online!
I'll google a bit, thanks!
1 level of cleric will give you some armor and some healing spells
With the feat war caster a wizard / cleric can wield a shield alongside their arcane focus, while wearing a holy symbol. Being a cleric allows for up to heavy armor depending on stuff I can't remember. Apparently just "dipping" into cleric would provide quite a few boons for my character.
You’d still need to multi class to get the shield proficiency, but yeah.
Honestly though if the party has someone else who can do healing you’re probably better sticking with pure wizard.
If they have a healer, I won't bother. If they don't, I will. It's kinda fun reading up on all this D&D stuff, not that I remember most of it afterwards.
Hello all! I'm glad to be here! I've played dnd since high school and I'm excited to be a veteran DM yet saddened by being a rookie player. I hope that this server could bring me some fun, exciting stories and grand adventures to journey through!
Cleric by default gets medium armor, some subclasses give heavy
Hi
can someone recommend a good set of dice? 🙂
What's your budget?
just something reasonable, as a newcomer. Not looking for diamonds, in other words
but quality and they feel good
You can go to a local game store.
Oh yeah when i made my character the gold was 160 (?)
Chessex dice are okay in quality and reasonably priced.
What is LMoP?
Lost Mine of Phandelver. It was the adventure that came with the original Starter Set.
Hello!
Hi
hennooo....also i come to ask for advice since i feel very unsure when finding a group
Is rolling for ability scores good for a beginner?
No because almost all DMs want to witness the roll.
Use Point Buy or Standard Array to be safe.
Aah oki2
When you use standard array, do the ability scores need to be as balanced as possible?
Standard Array is 15 - 14 - 13 - 12 - 10 - 8. You arrange them in whichever order you want for your ability scores. You apply your racial ability score bonus afterwards.
is it a bad thing if i dont VC at all. since i cant
if and when i join a group that says they VC
generally yes that would be a problem
my advice would be to find a group that doesn’t do VC
For example, I choose a high elf wizard
So for the wizard I put 8 Str, 13 Dex, 14 Con, 15 Int, 12 Wis, and 10 Cha
A high elf gets +2 Dex and +1 Int so the ability scores will be 8 Str, 15 Dex, 14 Con, 16 Int, 12 Wis, and 10 Cha
yeah...idk where to even look since everywhere i go i see VC
I know play by post forum games used to be a thing but I don’t know how common they are now
VC is much easier to communicate in real-time, especially for DMs.
As a DM I'm busy looking at the VTT and my notes and rarely look at Discord for text message (I have four monitors!)
yea
Websites like Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, Reddit’s r/pbp, and D&D Beyond’s forums all accommodate play-by-post.
ahh....so just look there instead?
since it also dosent help that ofc, its my frist time. hench why im here but yea
Give it a shot!
Heyo Everyone! I’m completely new to the D&D scene and I’m curious about playing
^^^^ im in the same shoes

How should I level up my durid
A good question for #character-discussion if you give more context.
The class will tell you what you get when you level up
Good evening, everyone! I just joined this server. I never ran D&D before and I'm setting my characters up before I look for groups to run my first campaign. I made three characters to see if one of them works. The Monk/Cleric (if you start as lvl 2) is the class I really want to play, but I heard of its controversial synergy. I also have a Paladin/Wizard which I heard it's a pretty good mix. Then I have a purebred cleric as last resort. Please let me know if there's a different channel I can ask for information on
Neither of those multiclassed builds work very well
Multiclass builds are more #character-discussion than newcomer material.
I would start by not multiclassing, it’s a lot of added complexity for your first time playing
And very easy to mess up quite badly
Gotcha, thank you
Good point, thank you
Is there also an art channel on this server?
Thank you
Why does the backpack add so much weight??
5 lbs?
how do I subclass?? I want to be an eldritch knight and stuff, but i don’t know how this stuff rlly works
At level 3 you can choose a subclass, if you have the material for it, it should tell you what you need to do
on dnd beyond you only have one subclass per class so you might not be able to find it there
Well it depends on the class, some classes get it earlier
