Dump your Cha and move that 13 to Dex
now 12 yes
k
how i do that
wait nevermind
now i only need to find a party or a dm
I just started trying to learn to play today and I have my character sheet thing, and there are strength wisdom and stuff like that, but what decides the number?
Typically the "standard array" which is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8 assigned as you like. Your DM may allow other methods such as point-buy or rolling dice.
Alright and when you join a group( which I think is called a party) do you chose everything there or can you have premade ones? And an array of I understand means I can’t have all 15’s i use each number for a different ability?(sorry if I ask too much but you know I’m really interested in learning dnd)
You get those six numbers, you put one in each ability score. Which way around you put them is up to you. If you're right at the start of your journey, take a look at this first.

Thank you I’ll be back if I have questions 😄
First family game night was a success, the kids (6 and 10) loved it! We may have bribed them with sweets to keep them motivated through the session (jelly teddies for good game manners, m&ms as enemy HP counters) and only managed to complete the first encounter in our 90 min game, but they’re hyped to play again next weekend!
Hey! how are you?
I have been seeing some Tik Toks about D&D, and since I have always liked roleplay, I want to try it. I am really lost on how to start. Does anyone know what things I should do? I am an absolute begginer, but playing seems really cool. 😄
I'd appreciate any help.
Welcome! There’s some handy starter links a few messages up. ☝️
But if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!
That’s great!
If I have the players handbook is there any way I can unlock it in the DND beyond app?
I have the hard copy
I’m afraid not.
You could recreate those character options using the homebrew system, though.
Or you could buy just the character options you need instead. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Makes it easy to just get what you need when you need it.
So I have to write out everything on a character sheet
Rather than use the convenient character creator on the app because it will be missing things
You can use the homebrew tools to recreate anything in your hardcopy books
Is it too late to return it
Or u could sell the book and buy the digital if you really want to
You could also buy the options you are interested in for your character piecemeal for $2 a pop if the total value is too high for your taste
How do I do that? It doesn’t seem to let me
I click on it and it just takes me to the players handbook purchase page
i think you can scroll down there and the individual options are below it?
Doesn’t take me to purchase page when I click on them it just closes the menu
Hey there! If you're having issues with DnDbeyond tools and services, let us know in #ddb-support and we can dig into it and see what's happening.
Two dms were talking about a samurai long bow build one said elven accuracy stacks for advantage other said it doesn’t
Listening in I went to read on the rules and it doesn’t say if it does or not
If you scroll down on this page, you’ll see them.

Hi everyone, hope you are all doing alright.
I have created my first character and got my character sheet from the app, got beyond20 installed on the browser and signed up in roll20 site, even got the fantasy grounds app via steam. I'm looking for a short one shot experience but I'm not sure if anyone would accept me since i am a newbie, been looking at the lf players channel too, any suggestions for me on how to continue, maybe other useful tools to prepare for my fisr campaign experience with other adventurers? Cheers !
One thing I always recommend is before you join a campaign, get really familiar with your character sheet. Try to remember where things are, where to click when you need to role a check vs a save. Also, find out what a turn in combat looks like (action, bonus action, movement) and see what kind of actions and bonus actions you have available to be ready for that first combat
Hello guys! So I’m rlly new to dnd and rlly don‘t knwo a lot abt it. Me and my friends wanna play it but were unsure how, and how to make our characters and what options we have (were rlly newbies.. but we wanna play it In person. But- atm were only 3 :,))

Hi friends, are links allowed to share? I found a great resource into learning D&D as new players. Plus building Rougue.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Ty
Links are generally allowed, but you can check the server’s link policy for the full details.
Book of lore bard says I can choose any two spells at level 6 of a level I can cast so thats cantrips, first, second and third levels right can I later change them to fourth level and up?
No, you can only pick them as they're available to you.
If such a feature allowed you to swap spells, it would say so
Im so confused. i am making a wizard, do i automatically know every wizard spell that i have a slot for?
no
Ok, why dont i have a spells know collumn on my class chart thing
this is detailed in the section explaining how the Wizard spellbook works. At level 1 you pick 6 spells to automatically add to your spellbook. At every level after you choose 2 spells of any level you are capable of casting. Anything beyond this you need to find and add
At 1st level, you have a spellbook containing six 1st-level wizard spells of your choice.
...
Each time you gain a wizard level, you can add two wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook for free. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the Wizard table.
that's because Wizards are a prepared caster, meaning you prepare what spells you can cast for the day from the list of spells you know
Yep.
ok
Barring any you've found through the adventure.
correct. The amount from those you may actually prepare, though, would be your wizard level + your intelligence modifier. So even with a max modifier of +5, at that level you would only be able to prepare 10 of those 14 spells to be able to use for the day
wsp
cool! i got lucky and rolled a 17 on con and 18 on int, and im a rock gnome, so make that 20 int an 18 con, and then ability score improvements on con, 2 20's at 4th level!
so, im currently running a high elf monk
and like
i was looking over my character sheet
how do ki points work
What part of the description is confusing you?
What level?
im lvl 2, im just asking for future ref
If you read the class description, you'll see there are multiple abilities to spend ki on.
You will gain additional features at different levels that consume ki points, such as Stunning Strike at level 5 or features from your subclasses
k
Whats ki point
Monks have a particular resource pool called ki - they use this resource to empower some of their monk features. An example would be like the monk's "flurry of blows" feature that allows them to make two unarmed strikes as a bonus action after making their normal attack action for 1 ki point.
https://atomcal.com/dungeons-dragons-fundamentals/ this defo helped me btw this site also has build guides
so i have some player expierence and I wasnt sure if this would be a dm discussion or or here. but i want to dip my toes into DM for the first time, and im nervous on where and how to start.
We have #dm-discussion - and it's a great place even for folks just starting out with DM'ing.
It's a better channel for DM questions as this channel is more for new-to-D&D folks questions.
Got it
Hiya! I’m interested in learning how to play D&D and eventually joining a game! Any advice?

Can catnap give a Warlock their spells back?
It can as it counts as a short rest

It is, check out #find-a-game if you're trying to find a game to play in 😁
Thank you! 😊
Hello everyone
If I have two short swords equipped with my assassin rogue, do I just roll twice and how do I calculate disadvantage with offhand?
No - you only have one attack action. As a bonus action you can attack with a second weapon but do not get your proficiency bonus added to it.
There’s generally no benefit to this unless you have a feature that specifically allows two-weapon fighting.
"When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you’re holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you’re holding in the other hand. You don’t add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative."
So you make a bonus attack as you would a normal attack, but don't add the ability modifier to the damage

Thanks for the link!
So how do you create a character?
And are there set maps or is it all up to the person controlling the game
The first few chapters of the Basic Rules there cover character creation.
But if you’re creating it on D&D Beyond (also linked there), you can click “Show Help Text” and it’ll walk you through it.
Okay I'll be sure to check that out
As for maps, most of the official adventures do include maps, but when, how, and if maps are used is ultimately up to the DM.
That makes sense
Last question
What would you say would be the ideal amount of people to start a game for beginners
And thanks for being so helpful
Most games have around 3-6 players.
Thanks for the help man really appreciate it!
What is the reasonable amount to pay a DM (Ok DM with some experience who can handle most of campaigns)
That's not really a newcomer question, more #dnd-discussion
I think it would be cool if there was a DM newcomer chat
This channel covers all aspects of being new to D&D
Hi everyone, new to the server. As someone who has only lightly dabbled into DND despite watching a lot of Critical Role, how good of an introduction is BG3 to actually playing table top?
I’ve been interested in playing TT but I’ve been a bit intimidated by information overload.
I feel like I’m grasping the concepts a bit more because of BG3 but I may just be learning things wrong because obviously a video game and tabletop is different.
It's not an introduction to the ttrpg D&D experience at all really
While it's very faithful to the tabletop experience, it's still a video game first and foremost
Alright. I was hoping the mechanics overlapped a bit so I was able to go in with a bit more understanding. Thanks!
The mechanics are very similar in places, but it's still a video game
I’m trying to get into d&d but i’m not exactly sure where to start i think i have decent general knowledge but i feel like i’m still too lacking to join a campaign can anyone offer advice
If I multiply class my level 5 sorcerer with a Warlock would I regain my spell slots on a short rest
You want #dnd-rules
lacking in rules, or like lacking in imagination/creativity?
i think it’s mostly imagination but if you know anyways or sites to learn the rules better it would be very much appreciated
YT is your friend, if you’re a visual and audio learner. I do recommend taking the PHB section by section, but gameplay is where the rubber meets the road here. Don’t be afraid to play, you’ll learn best that way.
Thanks for the advice
I watched a few episodes of critical role to help me get the idea, they do stretch the rules a little sometimes and aren’t perfect… but they definitely give off a good sense of creativity and problem solving when they play
That’s a good point also, don’t try and be perfect, just be willing to learn as you go.
Question on characters, do they carry over from one campaign to another one? Say I start a lvl 1 character and it gets to say lvl 10 during the course of a campaign and then it ends, can you take that lvl 10 and get in a new one or do you start a new character?
you can if you want
its up to the dm tho
Typically speaking jumping from private game to private game: not usually
However there’s a thing called Adventurers league
Which does exactly what you want
I DM private games with a friend group, and we have carried on this way, but that’s OUR norm. AL is best for consistency, unless you find a similar group willing to serialize game play.
Just added the server and thought I’d introduce myself. I’m in the curious position of having never “played” D&D, but have DM’d a few games. Although my friends seemed to have a lot of fun, I don’t think they’re keen on the idea that “we’re D&D players now”, so I thought I’d take a look in the channels and see what’s going on. Anyway, Hi.
The DM is absolutely a player; they just have a different role!
you get to be a god and choose your own alignment.
I'm so intimidated into getting into dnd
Real moment
You don't have to learn it all at once. No one learns anything that way.
If you have specific questions, this is a good place for them!
Summon Greater Demon at spell 4, how do I know the power of that Demon is there a specific token in the Compendium (I have most of the books) 😄
I've been reading and watching some videos but I'm still a bit confused on where to start. I tend to learn when I just do something 🙇
In the spell description, it says it's a demon of CR 5 or more. You'd have to skim the bestiary using filters, as here (https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters?filter-type=0&filter-type=9&filter-search=&filter-cr-min=9&filter-cr-max=&filter-armor-class-min=&filter-armor-class-max=&filter-average-hp-min=&filter-average-hp-max=&filter-is-legendary=&filter-is-mythic=&filter-has-lair=&filter-partnered-content=f).
You could play the demo linked in the pinned messages or begin reading the rules. You could watch some explainer videos or some streamed games. Odds are good, though, that unless you find a group in-person who wants to learn too, you won't find a group of strangers who will take on someone who hasn't tried to learn some of the game.
Are those things explained in DM guidebook /just started reading/ I guess yes - because I was unable to find that stuff in Players Handbook?
Monster types are listed in the Monster Manual.
Outside of spells (and a few class features), players generally don't have to worry about monster types, so that information is usually for the DM to know.
What are you reading?
Bc the DM manual is not where to start

Please don't post your character here like that. Link it instead of posting a wall of text.
If it's in DnDBeyond you can link it. If you're new you have to wait for a bit of time before you can share links (helps prevent spam bots)
it's in a google slide
D&D Beyond accounts are free.
You’ve made a barbarian what race are you
It’s $2 if you shop on the dndbeyond website
Does your DM allow plasmoid?
yeah he allows any official race
So where exactly are you stuck?
how do i obtain my skill stats
Ask your Dm - they decide what the table will use to generate stats
Dice rolling, Standard Array, Point Buy, some homebrew setup they've concocted
i think its dic rolling
You should be able to set that up on DnD Beyond
Skills use the modifier for the associated ability score.
So a Strength (Athletics) score would use your Strength modifier of +3.
ah, ok
If you’re proficient with that skill, you also add your proficiency bonus.
For a level 1 character, that’s +2.
is ther e a list of what skills i should use for each modifier?
thank you
Hi
E. Blast with Agonizing Blast charisma modifier. So if I hit + roll dmg 7 - do I add +5 Charisma modifier as DMG (+5 dmg) every time:
Yes
each blast is a separate attack and damage roll. Therefore each blast gets the charisma bonis
In combat, would it be possible to knock an item out of a creature's hand, pick it up, and use it as your own?
There is an optional rule for Disarm, in the Dungeon Master’s Guide.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/dungeon-masters-workshop#Disarm
the battlemaster fighter gets a maneuver to do that as part of an attack.
so if your DM doesnt use this optional rule, you could fall back on that
could I just take a spellcaster's arcane focus to prevent them from casting anything?
arcane foci only replace some marterial components. so you cant prevent them from casting all spells
ohh alr alr
how do i do the ability scores? i'm confused by a lot.
Did you read the Basic Rules yet?
There are three methods: rolling dice, Point Buy, and Standard Array.

No...i don't know where to look, do i look in the dnd hand player book?

Your DM will tell you which method to use. Point Buy and Standard Array are the most "safe" way because DMs would want to witness you rolling.
Do i add +1 for strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, wisdom and charisma?
if i'm human?
regular human adds +1 to all those stats, yes
Okay, thank you! your an awesome helper, including the pros at the game :>
Can someone point me in the direction of resources I’ll need if I want to get into dming?
My recommendations would be Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series, Sly Flourish's blog/books/videos, Johnn Four's Roleplaying Tips, and blogs by the Angry GM and the Alexandrian. Justin Alexander is releasing a book in November, So You Want to Be a Game Master, that sounds quite promising.
The Dungeon Master's Guide is a helpful reference, but I feel like it assumes you already know how to run a TTRPG. The 2024 version may be better on this score.
Oh ty! I’ll look into that YouTube channel! Sounds like a good place to start
hello!
hi
should i bother learnhing 5e or just wait until 6e comes out
if you mean onednd, thats not 6e
The next version of D&D is "supposed" to be backwards compatible with 5e
so i learn 5e
Not a bad place to start.
Teleport says the dm rolls a d100
Are we supposed to have d100’s or is that spell usually banned
A d100 can be rolled as 2d10 instead.
U can just roll two d10s and designate one for the singles
A standard 7-piece dice set will include two d10s for this, with one of them often labeled using double digits.
Percentile dice, or d100, work a little differently. You generate a number between 1 and 100 by rolling two different ten-sided dice numbered from 0 to 9. One die (designated before you roll) gives the tens digit, and the other gives the ones digit. If you roll a 7 and a 1, for example, the number rolled is 71. Two 0s represent 100. Some ten-sided dice are numbered in tens (00, 10, 20, and so on), making it easier to distinguish the tens digit from the ones digit. In this case, a roll of 70 and 1 is 71, and 00 and 0 is 100.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/introduction#GameDice
How much does sunlight sensitivity affect Drow's rolls?
I'm very attached to mine and I want to use her in any campaign that I can ><
It gives you disadvantage on attack rolls and Perception checks in sunlight.
wait, is that when I roll two dice and take the lower number?
Yes
aw damn
Hello 👋
meow
what is a cantrip?
Cantrips are a form of magic that your character has probably spent hours practicing and perfecting. It's small magic that can be cast without much effort
a spell that can be cast at will, without using a spell slot and without being prepared in advance. Repeated practice has fixed the spell in the caster's mind and infused the caster with the magic needed to produce the effect over and over. A cantrip's spell level is 0.
for future reference use the PHB and the DMG
and i have yet to learn the magic system...
physical free?
no
ok
So I have a question about a possible character I'm creating
shoot
@fiery chasm So I would like to do a Stout Halfling and I'm stuck on choosing a class (I'm stuck between a Ranger and a warlock ) and I don't know if my choice is super common and or overused
in the phb it says for death saving throws if you are stable and remain stable 1d4 hours you gain 1 hitpoint. does it mean irl hours or some ingame time i dont know about
ingame
well depends what kind of character you wanna play. more magic focused got warlock, more weapon combat and nature go ranger
In game.
or dms choice
how long is one ingame hour
dms choice
Whatever your DM says
sounds like dnd to me
Ok I may go with the ranger thanks
What are the components that are just one letter
glad i could help
Hi. In AL is it 10 downtime to level up unless your are in tier borders?
Like for example lvl 2-3 is 10 downtime?
How about lvl 6-7?
you mean the V, S, M things?
Yes
verbal, somatic, material
verbal is speaking, somatic is like gestures, and material is physical stuff
#adventurers-league can probably help more
I'm super interested in AD&D 2 and the Dragonlance Modules. Is there a good place to search for D&D groups?
#dnd-elder-editions probably knows a good place
M is the parenthesis stuff after the letters right
yep thats the specific material components required
Welp i got my character sheet done
Nice!
Thanks I ended up going with a Stout Halfling ranger
Cool
Hello everyone
Hi
What do you guys recommend for spells for a wizard
Magic missile, mage armor, shield, absorb elements, firebolt, and sleep are all good at first level
2 1st level slots
My god I've been working so much on my dnd character
Check the class table
I like using mage hands
Can u send link
They are super handy to get around
It’s in the basic rules, you can find it yourself
Kk
go to comedy jail
You gotta roll for that
Ha didn’t work
damn it! how do you always get away?!
I’m just lucky and plus I’m too wholesome for jail
are you also handsome?
No, I think I’m ugly
hey thats no way to talk about yourself. have some self respect
I may have luck, but I do not have charisma
I’m not saying this to doubt myself I’m saying this because I’m shy around people
everyone has a dump stat, just gotta figure out how to deal with it
So what you’re saying is use the hand that you were dealt
By the way, I’m trying to join a DND campaign. I don’t really have that many friends to do one so I figured why not come here
Hi i am new to this world and don't know where to start can someone help ahaha i want to play but don't want to be a burden to more advanced player because i know nothing ahaha
Go to #find-a-game.
Have a look at the resources in the pinned messages
There are both dungeons and dragons in the game Dungeons and Dragons, although it depends on which particular campaign you are playing.
what really?! thats crazy 🤯
It is actually quite regular.
How do I determine attack bonus for Mage Hand
Ok, so how important is the handbook? Is it required or could I find it for free online?
Also, if I were to get the starter kit, would that be good enough? Or would I still need the handbook.
Eventually I plan to get the handbook, I’m just not in a great spot finically rn and wanted to ask
Mage Hand cannot make attacks so there is no bonus.
if you have someone to teach you dnd you dont really need any of the books, but if not yeah I recommend the PHB
@plucky wadi Many of the questions you are asking can be relatively easily answered by checking out the basic rules for the game. You can check it out here

do you guys use dnd beyond?
cause it has a much more intuative char maker than roll 20
Some do, some do not
helloo! 😄 I'm making a new character, but I don't have the dice for it. Do you guys have any online/android app recommendations?
dice on google
yes google has its own dice engine
it has saved me multiple times when i lost my dice stash
There's also the Avrae bot on discord that supports dice expressions in addition to dice rolling
I just finished BG3 with ZERO knowledge about dnd. I'm very interested but none of my friends are remotely interested and there aren't any IRL groups where I live. Am I out of luck or is there an active scene of randoms online dnd?

oh sorry didn't notice that, thanks
Hey no worries!
if a spellcaster knows how long their spell lasts, say 10 minutes, and the whole party's safety depends on the spell holding, not in combat. how do characters understand time? do different characters understand it differently? i imagine watches aren't a thing, yea? how would the spellcaster tell the party they have 10 minutes, rush. is there someway that could be communicated?
Mechanically it doesn't really matter (other then when the spell ends) so you could role-play it as your caster informing the party they have x time before the spell ends. The rest of the party would have a general feel for how long that is. Or if you're the DM you could force more mechanics on it and have everyone make an intelligence check to see if they accurately gauge the time.
It's an assumption of the game that people can always sorta ballpark estimate how long an hour/ten minutes/a minute is for the purpose of things like that
Where that ability comes from depends on setting; maybe clocks/watches are a thing, or maybe there are common magical equivilents
thanks. question came from critrole S1E44, where both marisha 1h29m and later keyleth 1h32m said they've 10 minutes. it's neat.
i like how you said an hour/ten minutes/a minute. checked spells and that seems to be the duration for them. i like that
then for those with low int, like grog, if they ask how long is that. someone that's smarter can crack a wise joke to frame it.
Im planning on dm'ing the stormwrecker isle starter campaign (First time proper dm'ing), how do you determine when its time to level up characters and what then?
There are instructions in the adventure. See the sections marked "Gain a Level", usually at the end of a chapter.
Milestone is a good way to go about it
e.g. Page 27, at the end of Chapter 3.
ive looked through it and i dont see it
found it
was looking at the wrong book lol, thanks
Yes, go to #find-a-game or go to the roll20 find a game and there are plenty to choose from.
No problem! I much prefer using that (what is usually called "milestone levelling") rather than tracking XP.
is that just where you finish a encounter and then boom yhoui level up
It's when the DM awards Level Ups at points that make sense for the story, usually at the end of an arc or dungeon.
ok thank you :]
XP Levelling, you have to keep track of yet another number, the DM can only indirectly control the pace of the campaign, and the level-ups are probably going to drop at some weird inconsequential point.
Where would be a good place to find little figures to use to represent characters?
my dm last week had a bunch of little 3d printed pokemons which was cool
You can print out paper minis or use chess pieces or bottle tops
Depends how cheap or expensive you want to go
Just wanted to ask if i understood this correctly, in the essentials kit do i get a code which i can redeem to get it also on dnd beyond + the 3 other adventures?
There's an official FAQ post about the codes here: https://dndbeyond-support.wizards.com/hc/en-us/articles/7747237647252-Redeeming-Codes-from-the-D-D-Essentials-Kit
I don’t think newer version still include the code.
I’d check to make sure it’s explicitly mentioned on the package before you open it.
Oh yeah I just founda forum post that says they discontinued the codes in 2021, so my initial quick search was wrong
Ok ty
Yeah, I think they effectively traded those for giving everyone LMOP at no cost.

What happens if I tell my DM, I want to push this guy (party member) off the cliff (let's say that he is on the edge). Can he basically refuse to allow that?
Your DM can do that, and there may be a good reason for that relative to your continuing game play, but then again they may not because of other reasons. Bottom line: The final decision ends with the DM of your game. You can discuss this with them post session.
I am asking because if I am Chaotic Evil character, those things are expected.
It's part of the DM's job to make sure that everyone's having fun at the table, and that includes preventing random acts of inter-party murder
Answer is the same.
Your character is chaotic evil
You as a player still have a responsibility to not disrupt the game
There's a common refrain in D&D advice; "It's what my character would do" is never a good excuse for toxic behaviour at the table
If you've made the choice to make a chaotic evil character, you have to figure out some way for that character not to be a disruptive presence to the game. They're not a real person, they do whatever you decide they do. You are responsible for their actions in the game
Agreed 100%. I’ve had to tell some people who keep asking basic gameplay questions to “go look it up in the PHB and get back to me”, only because they don’t realize their constant line of questioning disrupts the other players. I’m always happy to answer questions, but interrupting the DM mid narration fairly consistently is not a good way to be. Be choosy with your questions and when you ask.
Playing D&D, and learning about it, requires a growing knowledge of teamwork and cooperation with your party.
I realize now I went on a tangent only slightly relevant to the subject. So, to get back on track, a player does have a teamwork role with the party. If the person doesn’t realize it (or cares not), and wants to be disruptive then some discussions will need to be had to see if this game is right for them.

What you expect and what the table expects should be communicated, not assumed. Out-of-game discussions like session zero try to prevent anyone from stepping on someone else's fun.
I am surprised how D&D is welcoming newer players. I would always get bashed whenever I would start playing any other game. 10/10 guys - keep up the good work.
I've watched one shots before
yeah oneshots are a good way to get to grips with dnd

oh yup I did!
can I vc with someone to just ask a few questions
im more of a auditory learner and prefer learning through talking
There is no voice channel on this server. Ask your questions here.
The person you get may not give you the correct answers.
can you do it then>?
It's true! The purpose of this channel is to act as a hub where a group of people can all work together to get you the information you need. And as Mr. Cloud says, others can look at the conversation and learn as well!
whats the best way to get into a group here and play today?
There are tens of thousands of people on this server. We can't give one-on-one tutorials on the game to every new person who wants to learn the game.
Play today? A little difficult unfortunately. You can check out the #find-a-game channel to look through the advertised games on the server. Fair warning though, while some people might get lucky and find a game to play on the same day, the vast, vast majority of people take days or even weeks to find a game. Even setting up your character and getting to know the setting might take a few days if you find a group immediately!
Learn the game and its rules. As Dosh Bones indicated it may take a while to find a table to join but probably more difficult to find a DM offering a game for new players only. In the meantime, learn how your character works. This way you won't have the DM constantly pause the game to teach you the fundamentals of the game.
On top of which, arranging schedules to find a mutually convenient time and orienting everyone to the type of game (whether through session zero or not) entails more time and logistics. D&D typically doesn't work like an MMO where you can just find a game happening at any given time and hop in casually.
The true villain of any campaign is the calendar. 😔
Yup, I had to cancel last session because four of the six players couldn't play. Sigh.
I guess that'd be a reason why one shots are nice
They still take a considerable amount of coordination. Just less of it.
Oh right. Something else I'm confused about. How does gear work?
Like equipment? What do you mean, specifically?
yeah. Like how in RPGs you can get new gears, your defense, attack, etc. is partly determined by your gears. etc
That's true! Same with DnD. You usually start off with a set of base equipment (armor, weapons, and miscellaneous items) determined by your chosen background and class.
Armour enhances your AC. Magic armour increases your AC.
Weapons does base damage while magical weapons does more damage and maybe have powers.
Other RPGs have their foundations in D&D, which is the granddaddy of all RPGs (D&D is turning 50 next year).
Check out this page for more specifics:

Sweet thanks..
Will I be able to put an arcane shield on a necromancer summoned skeleton?
What do you mean by an "Arcane Shield"?
The Shield spell only works on yourself, unfortunately, and only lasts 6 seconds at most anyway
Ok
@upper root This is the channel you should probably start in
If you're looking for something similar that might help, check out the Mage Armor spell!
Am I able to revive a mini boss with the raise the dead spell? Ok and thank you for the tip
It's another classic early Wizard spell, but many people forget it can be used on allies
Do you perhaps mean the Animate Dead spell? Raise Dead is just a resurrection spell, whereas Animate Dead creates an undead minion.
If you do mean Animate Dead, then possibly- depending on what kind of creature that mini boss was. If it was a humanoid you could, but remember: it would always come back to life as a generic zombie or skeleton. There aren't any spells in DnD that raise undead minions with the same degree of power they had in life.
That is what I ment and thank you for letting me know
I’m wanting to make my own campaign with mostly homebrew stuff while still working in the rest of normal DnD.
I’m a newcomer. Is this a bad idea?
Homebrew setting or rules
Is there a difference between Kobold (MoM) and Kobold (UA)? I am creating a character and there are 3 different Kobolds to choose. First one just says Kobold and has unique features but the other two are Kobold (MoM) and Kobold (UA) but they have the same features
Settings and I guess some rules?
I’m a newcomer DM because nobody wants to put me in as a player 🫠
Okay, that's more work to create your homebrew setting (nothing wrong with that).
Yeah I understand that. Was just wondering if it’s a terrible idea or not 😅
UA stands for Unearthed Arcana. It’s playtest material, so it’s essentially the unfinished version.
Start small and run some one shots
So, the difference is that one is UA (Unearthed Arcana) and the other from MoM (Monsters of the Multiverse). Basically, anything that is UA is not official material. It is released by official sources but it's basically a playtest version. With this specific example, it did well and was then published in MoM and is now an official race you can play.
MoM is effectively the “current” version.
Alright thanks for the info was really confused about that
We can't say if it's a terrible idea for you or not. I don't have tons of time, so I prefer to run published material. Making a homebrew campaign would be a terrible idea for me as of now. Maybe that would change later on.
It's definitely an investment of time and energy. If you're willing, go for it.
Hello
Welcome!
Do servers like this have hosted games or will I actually have to go outside to find people to play with?
#find-a-game has instructions for finding a game here, but the games themselves happen outside the server.
As in on other servers or in real locations, there is nothing within a tolerable distance for me hence why I'm searching on discord
Ok
I am brand new to this

Start there
Is it ok to multiclass wizard and warlock
I’d try aim for something with the same spell casting ability. Wizard uses Intelligence, Warlock uses Charisma.
A sorcerer might be a better pick, as it uses Charisma as well.
Ok
Ask your DM.
If you're starting at level 1 then you can't multiclass at that point.
Ok
You’re new. Dont multiclass. Learn a class first and how to play
Later, learn the rules about multiclassing and be prepared to do some reading
can i ask a dumb lore question here
Hiii
Hey there!
Welcome
is they any classes you think a newbie shouldnt start with
Casters are always harder
Any caster
They’re totally doable but it will be a lot more work
so im making my first character sheet, wizard high elf. high elfs have perception proficiency and wizard i chose insight and arcana. Ive dotted them in but what values do i use? I have my wisdom and int scores then i add what on top?
like with spells and shit?
Proficiency modifier which at level 1 is+2
A caster is short for spellcaster so yes
sorry
All g
Yes. So Wizard, druid, bard, sorc, cleric, warlock
There are “half caster” classes in Paladin or Ranger
Don't say sorry bro
The three types of classes are martials, casters, and half casters
isnt that like all of the classes besides barb
Strongly suggest you start with a martial like Fighter, rogue or barb
Martials are rogues, barbs, fighters, and monks
Or monk
Half casters are artificer, ranger, and Paladin
monks seem cool, but a little boring
Full casters are bard, sorc, warlock, wizard, Druid, cleric
They’re the martial class with the most choices to make, until you run out of ki points
After doing like… 2 cool monk things
oh
i dont think imma do that class then lol
i think my fave classes are bard, barbarian, druid and artificer
Al classes have their role usually
under the equipment section wat is cp sp ep gp pp
whys that
Copper pieces
Silver
Electrum
Gold
Platinum
Lots of stuff to manage very overwhelming
Tracking all the wildshape options can be very overwhelming
icl im mainly tryna pick a class after what i want the backstory to be
I had a new player play a Druid and I basically had to choose their wildshapes for them bc they were really overwhelmed
might go with bard tbh
so the base stats are 10 across the board and then you have 27pts to make adjustments?
If doing Point Buy, you have 27 points to buy stats with, which means you can end up with some stats below 10 (lowest is 8, if I remember for Point Buy)
Yes, but the points aren't 1:1, it costs more if you want to have higher stats.
The only way to feasibly do it for a new player is to meet pregame and together pick like…2 animals ahead of time. One combat one utility
And have the stats ready
wait they start from 8 not 10?
Yeah
ok
my maths wasnt adding
i was doing from 10s and i was looking at it why cant i have 5 15s cos 27pts
that's why. a matter of balancing stats out so you can be good in what you need to be good at but with the sacrifice of dumping stats you don't need
Points aren’t linear like that either
What do bards do when out of spell points. Just stand there?
either use cantrips or weapons
Can trips or bardic inspiration or weapons
Oh i forgot about cantrips
Ideally don't run out by pacing yourself
I can't remember what bard's get but I remember they're there
wait guys. Im using the dnd beyond creation as a guide and its no 7pts to go from 8 to 15 its 9pts
Yeah correct higher statd cost more
Yes, because it costs more to go up that many points.
Im very very new to dnd are there certain races better for certain classes
Whichever race you find particularly interesting.
Gotcha
so from 13pts onwards its 2pts from the 27 per level
Yeah but that usually isn't relevant unless you wanna optimize like crazy which I wouldn't recommend for a beginner
Ty!
Go for whatever race is funniest
okay so high elf wizard. i have 8str 8dex 15con 15int 14wis 10char. but i have a +1 int and +2dex so its 10dex and 16int which gives me +0 and +3 respectively?
Solid but dex is pretty strong usually
Saving throws are for all stats but dex are pretty common yes
ac?
Armor class
kk
How difficult you are to hurt basically
Dodging and weaving or simply being impenetrable
the book says the wizard saving throws are int and wisdoem, is that when im bleeding out
No those are death saves
That’s just the saving throws you get proficiency in
Basically there’s 7 types of saving throws
One for each stat, and then death saving throws
You don’t add anything to death saving throws, they’re just a flat roll
You do those when you hit 0 hp
and not outright killed
Yeah
Are half orcs generally good barbarians
Generally, yes
Actually idk why I asked that
Yeah course they are
Is there any race you'd recommend not being a barb
so wizards at level 1 get 3 cantrip and 6lvl 1 spells known?
Yeah
?help

There is a table in the wizard section shows that # of cantrips
There is a specific section in spellcasting that explains how many spells you know
And prepare
ive read it and it says you prepare spells equal to the amount of your int modifier + your wizard level
so level 1 and 16 int would be 4 spells
that you prepare
out of 6 in your spellbook
at first level you have 6 1st level spells in your spellbook
every levelup you gain an extra 2 spells in your spellbook of any level you can cast
sculpt spells just stops alliues dying from aoes?
lastly before i go to bed, background proficienies stack right? so insight x2 is a +4?
no
proficiency doesnt stack
if you have proficiency in something, you just have proficiency in it
hmm so BG3 is not the same as the real thing
theres some differences yes
you can get expertise in skills, which is double proficiency
BG3 is based on D&D but has difference because it's a video game and not a TTRPG
but you dont get it by having proficiency twice
i gues that promotes strange combos like criminal wizards?
sort of promote not wanting proficiencies to overlap?
well you generally want to choose proficiencies that dont overlap
If your background gives you a proficiency you already get from your race or class, you can switch it to something else.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Proficiencies
so i would have arcana twice, i swap one with another int proficiency?
I don't think it has to be an INT proficiency. It's just if you have an overlap of skill proficiencies, you choose a separate skill. If you had a tool proficiency from two sources, you'd choose another tool, not a skill.
Uh how do i play with someone else?

Hi
Hi
How are you
Good thx hbu
I'm ok just tryin to make friends
Hello moon
Hey guys!! 👋👋👋
hi
Hey guys
hey silly question but as a level one character is there a specific total that all my ability scores should round up to?
i mean how do i determine my ability scores in general 😭
oh okay sick thanks so much
There are three ways to generate your ability scores:
- Roll 4 d6 dice, drop the lowest roll, and then combine the score. Do this for the 6 attributes (Strength through Charisma).
- Use Standard Array which is a set array of numbers: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Use point buy: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#VariantCustomizingAbilityScores
Ok for my first character I want to play a pact of the great old one warlock that has gone blind from seeing his patron how do I counter balance that ?
talk to your dm
I was told there’s a cantrip that deals fire damage and will damage a second enemy within 5 feet of it
But wasn’t told the name
Green flame blade
its one of two cantrips that trigger a weapon attack with a side effect
How can a druid get this?
We are beyond the scope of newcomers questions, lets go to #character-discussion
K
If a spell says make a melee spell attack does that mean you can make a melee weapon attack and also apply the spell
A melee spell attack is an attack using your spellcasting modifier, and then doing the effect that the spell says.
Melee Spell attack:
You are casting a spell
Roll a d20 to hit, add your spell attack modifier
Then whatever effect is described
Hey there so I’m kind of a new character and I’m still tryna figure out character creation, if an ability score increase increases a score, does the modifier also increase?
Yes
How do you play D&D?
Take the score
subtract 10
Divide by 2
Or more simply:
score 10, mod +0
score 12, mod +1
Etc
have a look at the resouorces linked in the pinned comments

Reading these
Hello im a little shy ill have to get used to talking in here before i join a game. Im relatively new to d&d but i have characters and understand how to play for the most part
Hello, myself and a group of friends are looking to get into DnD. Where do we start and any advice? Note: We have never played
See the bot message a few lines up!
Have a look at the botpost here
Read the rules (linked above), figure out who will be the DM, and players should make characters while the DM decides on the adventure (whether a published one or one they make up themselves). That’s the truncated version.
It'll also be good to read through it and get to grips with the rules. I'd be happy to help explain away any confusions if you'd like.
Rock! And! Stone! Ill keep that in mind thanks!
fellow DRG player as well, nice. But yes, DND comes down to being... You have statistics and some abilities that say you can do X this well, you have the ability to do Y, and you can do Z, and so on. You describe what you do, resolve any mechanical determination as to if it succeeds or fails, or what effect that has, and it continues on.
If I was looking to find a DM to help guide us/run us through our first night playing where and how do I go about that?
Check out #find-a-game
Great thanks! Just posted it 😄
How does "holding action" work? can I say "I hold my fireball until my friends get away from that goblin and only then I blast him" ?
exactly
can I hold "enlarge/reduce" to enlarge a boulder that my friend is gonna throw so it becomes a huge rock mid-air?
yes
damn that's cool
- You can hold any action (no bonus actions) or your movement
- Holding spells requires you cast your spell, then hold it using concentration
- When you hold an action or movement, you must specify a trigger that your character (not you the player) can perceive
- When that trigger occurs, you can choose to use your reaction to perform the held action or to move
- You can specify a trigger that occurs multiple times and pick which one you respond to
that's very thorough and clear, I appreciate it
Can I fly super high, have haste, throw boulder, cast enlarge on it, and have a huge rock fall from the heavens on my enemy?
Theoretically yes
Wait no
Actually no yes sorry you can take the actions in any order
wouldn't that do absurd damage if I go high enough like 200ft or sth
Also is this considered "cheese" or fair play
- Fly super high: yes
- Have haste: yes
- Throw boulder: yes, but if you want it to do damage, it'd have to be an improvised weapon attack which does 1d4+str damage
- Cast enlarge: yes, but not before point 3 is fully resolved so it'd be enlarged after it hits. And even if you enlarged it, it wouldn't do any more damage as an improvised weapon attack
- Have a huge rock fall "from the heavens" on my enemy: no, there are rules for dropping objects on creatures. There's improvised damage, but that's at the DMs discresion
as someone who had a boss crushed by a falling elephant i say cheese
At least you have a funny story out of it
thanks
Hang on what if you just dropped the boulder
Not throw it
The action would be resolved as soon as it left your hands
Also an object interaction like that would be a free action
So no need for haste
That may work
However I am not a rules expert so don’t take my word for it, wait for someone more qualified to respond or ask abt it in #dnd-rules
I like your thinking either way
I was thinking of throwing it straight up so I have "time" to cast enlarge on it before it's out of range, but i have no clue what damage it'd do lol
Rules as written, falling is instantaneous so the moment you released the boulder, it falls to the ground with no window to trigger the readied action
If you take the attack action and throw it, the action isn’t resolved until it hits the target so you can’t do anything else
Oh true forgot that part
Yeah RAW it won’t work
Talk to your dm tho, they may allow it
yeah ofc, when i find a game

Is there a way to play D&D solo (DM and player in one) for combat purposes for example?
Your good just helping
Yes you could have it like gladiator arena
There are solo-D&D 'adventures' that are more like choose-your-own-adventure stories, but are a far cry from the actual D&D experience
Yes, I already have 3 normal runs (on the weekend) but I would like to enjoy some from Mon-Fri by fighting monsters etc.. 🙂
I mean, you can 'goldfish' combat by yourself all you want (goldfishing being a trading card game term for playing against yourself)
It's not what D&D is designed for, kinda takes the roleplaying out of 'tabletop roleplaying game'
I agree, and I do enjoy RP aspect - considering the fact that I am NEW to the game, few extra rolls and combat would be welcome I guess 🙂
You don't need to ping me when you replying immediately after me
sooooooo i got a problem
everybody around me wanna play D&D and me as the only somebody who already played at least some Pen and Paper games was chosen to be a Gamemaster by my Group
HELP
What kind of help are you looking for, specifically?
well i managed to put together a decent round of Cthulhu once so i know how to learn mechanics. My Problem is more that i dont know what i can expect from the other players like what can i expect them to read up on without them knowing like every lore bit of the world (which personally, i am also not able to).
Aa far as lore goes, each game is effectively a world of its own.
You can use as much or as little of the official lore as you like.
Or you can take it and put your own spin on it.
If you’re running a published adventure, it will tell you what you need to know for that adventure.
so you telling me i can make orcs like the most peaceful guys around and may still just play fine as long as i can DM that stuff atleast somewhat convincingly?
yes absolutely
the lore is basically just there to flavour the mechanics. you can reflavour just about anything without changing too too much
Ultimately, D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together.
And that story is uniquely yours, so tell it however you want.
if you want to be a little more lose with your lore, i might suggest checking out tasha's couldron of everything which introduced the optional rule to respec any race however you like, so your peaceful scholarly orcs can have the boni that best reflect that
And while the world is ultimately the DM’s responsibility, IMO the best DMs let the players help shape that world.
If a player came to me and said they wanted to play a peaceful orc, I’d find a way to make it work.
then there is the part on how i should limit my friends in character creation, on the one hand i want them to be what they want and on the other all the races brought in seem overwhelming at first
you can absolutely suggest that they stick to the phb races at first. plenty of people do that
last time people were a little upset one guy just shot cantrips like every round while they got absolutely smashed by the mobs in meelee, how do i know which mobs are adequate for what level and how do i scale mobs?
you don't exactly 'scale' things - and each creature (or Monster) has a CR
on the other hand, if they do come across something else that really pulls their eye, you could always just let them have it. racial abilities aren't super plentiful so getting familiar with the ones that apply to your party isn't too much work.
hi anyone can really show/teach me how to start D&D? I'm really interested but never got any chance to play around nor have friends that familiar with it 😢
CR is Challenge Rating, and the specific portion on encounter building does far more justice to how CR and XP budget (think of it like a DM buying monsters with points per-adventuring-day, as a close-enough gauge of how much monster a party can slay through in a day - but putting more together at once gets more expensive) and so on all work.
i kinda get where you to are going with that
so effectively, that's as much as you're going to get for "a monster's level" or "power level" or whatnot. Challenge Rating.
if you want to make things a little easier on yourself, you could ban flying races, because balancing encounters and dungeons around flight can be a little tricky at first
flying races are easily countered by one thing
them falling
if a flying creature's speed is reduced to 0, be it from anything at all, they fall. That doesn't apply if they have Hover, whether it's stated (a Beholder) or just from the flight being magically sourced (obscure rule that says all magic flight is hover)
also, to give the most basic description of challenge rating: it is defined as what level a well rested party of four should be to go against a monster without any party deaths.
low ceilings also work wonders.
that's true. however falling damage especially for low level pcs can become deadly very fast. plus you will want to find a good balance between countering your flyer and just letting them have fun with it every now and again.
I need some help filling out information. I’m joining a D&D club and my teacher gave me this like paper thing to fill out information and now I’m supposed to fill out my skills but I don’t know how and I’m just wondering how to do that 😭
if they keep flying ~80, 100 feet high... that's 8-10 d6's of fall damage. So if they only fly 10~20 feet high, only 1 or 2 d6's of fall damage. Keeps them nice and low.
its okay with the flying i get it ^^
but thanks i guess i will just yolo some story up and hope it doesnt blow to pieces XD
That'd be your character sheet. Step by step character creation will help.
does it also help creating them manually?
it's the list of instructions, it's the character creation process
yeah but is it a dndbeayond specific manual?
no, it's just D&D. Beyond is just a digital site for the stuff
because if one googles D&D character creation there are just some dudes talking 5 hours about character sheets and tough i am not generation tik tok i will have forgotten what they said in the beginning at the end of the video llol
@tranquil pilot yknow what might also help, d&d beyond app, if you download it on your phone then all you have to do is pick a race and character thing and I feel like it organizes everything for you making it less complicated
It basically comes down to
Race
Class
Ability scores
(and then description and equipment, like background and does a fighter take a greatsword or a rapier or whatever)
the last part is the most complicated for me like what if they just pack bullshit?
like, as an example, one could make a High Elf, choose Fighter, pick their scores to emphasize Dexterity and Intelligence, and they're a dextrous, smart, high elf, fighter.
The Starting Equipment list for each class is fine to use, gives some nice starting gear
Yeah, but I recommend just making the digital version then copying it down in pencil

Thank you
Each skill is associated to one of your ability scores, as shown here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Skills
Your bonus for that skill is equal to that ability score modifier.
Your class, background, and sometimes race might also give you proficiency in one or more skills.
So for those, you'd add your proficiency bonus as well.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#ProficiencyBonus
Your proficiency bonus for a level 1 character is +2, as shown in this table:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
So if you have a +3 Strength, your Strength (Athletics) would also be a +3. If you're proficient in Athletics as well and have a proficiency bonus of +2, then you add them together for a total of +5.
So will I ever need to make just a basic cha skill check or will it always fall under one of the categories
Also if I'm proficient with cha does that mean any skill associated to cha will take my proficiency bonus or can I just not be proficient in a basic ability
You can’t be proficient in just an ability score. You’re likely proficient in charisma saving throws on top of whatever other skill proficiencies your class, race, and background grant.
Oh ok thank you
So I filled out the part where it mentions Strength Dexterity constitution intelligence wisdom and charisma
And I got
Strength- 16
Dexterity- 14
Constitution- 12
Intelligence- 14
Wisdom- 15
Charisma- 13
Now what do I do to fill out that little section on the D&D page thing that says skills? I was reading the D&D beyond website but I didn’t understand 😭
Well depending on your class race and background you get a certain amount of proficiencies in stuff I think
You'll need to start by writing down the modifier for each of those ability scores, using this table here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
A 16 STR, for example, would be a +3.
Then find all the STR skills, as listed here, and write a +3 for those, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Skills
Then your sheet probably has little circles next to the skills. Fill in those circles for any skills you're proficient in, and add +2.
(If you're starting at a level higher than 4, check this table for the correct proficiency bonus: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement)
Also what does a crit do in dnd ?
It hits regardless of any modifiers to the roll, and you roll twice the number of damage dice.
Ok
It says a one results in missing but I've seen some people make it so you hit urself or a team mate is that a good way to run things ?
IMO: no. 😅
So how do I figure out which skills I’m proficient in? I’m confused
Your class and background will tell you, or give you a choice.
Some races give skill proficiencies as well.
So I just wanna make sure all of the info I have is right
My character is a half-orc monk
Strength- 16 (+3)
Dexterity- 14 (+2)
Constitution- 12 (+1)
Intelligence- 14 (+2)
Wisdom- 15 (+2)
Charisma- 13(+1)
My skills proficient skills are
Athletics (+3)
deception (+1)
Religion (+2)
Stealth (+2)
Does all of that seem correct? (I hope what I wrote makes sense 😭)
Without knowing what your background is, I couldn't say so 100%, but it all looks likely! Those are some beautifully high stats
The background is a criminal
Then yeah, that looks correct
I got a question instead of using equipment from your class you get starting gold do you use that gold to get your own equipment or am I wrong?
i am new in dnd, and i choose human races and fighter class, so what should i know before i play.and how to win
How do I figure out my equipment?
That's correct. You've got two choices when you create a character:
- Pick from the list of equipment that comes default to them + your background's gear
Or - Roll for gold and buy things individually
If those are the skills you're proficient in, you'd also add your proficiency bonus to those.
If you're a level 1 character, that's +2.
So you'd have a +5 total for Athletics, for example.
I thought so thank you for confirming that for me dosh bones I appreciate it
At a bare minimum, I’d recommend knowing these common terms, what to do on your turn, and how your character’s own abilities work.
As for how to win: don't worry about it.
D&D is about you and your friends telling a story together.
The DM will present scenarios, and it's up to you to figure out how your character will react.
thx
There will be times you succeed and times you fail, and that's fine -- they both shape the story either way.
Your starting equipment is listed in your class and background.
mine Strength- 16
Dexterity- 15
Constitution- 14
Intelligence- 12
Wisdom- 11
Charisma- 11
what is best weapon for human fighte
Fighters are pretty flexible. What kind of weapon do you want to use?
which is best (idk
"Best" is subjective. 😅
Some common loadouts:
- A 1-handed weapon and shield
- Two 1-handed weapons
- A 2-handed weapon
- A ranged weapon
Not sure what you mean by that.
so like which character hate me in dnd
That's probably something you'd need to discuss with your DM.
ok
I have no idea who's even in your game. 😅
have elf, gnome, and dwarf there are two have elf
These are all questions better saved after you learn how the game works
This isnt a video game, there isnt a pre-ser bad guy coming after you, and even if there were for a particular adventure, we wouldn’t tell you and spoil it
ok

How long should a backstory be ?
There's no right or wrong answer there, but IMO, a couple paragraphs.
A good backstory is Swiss cheese: there's enough to give it structure, but it's full of holes.
That's up to you and your DM! Some people are willing to read pages and pages of backstory, some like to keep it simple. Just remember: keep things vague before you find a game. You never know what your DM's world is going to be like!
3 sentences to 3000 word depends how in depth you want to make it
Ask your DM. I would recommend no more than a page: enough to give the DM (and you) some idea of where the character has been, but not so much that there's no room to surprise you. Also, at level 1, your adventuring career has just begun, so bear that in mind.
But never let your backstory be more powerful than a lvl 1 character
I think that's a good idea. Be mindful of the DM's time.
Some stuff is not usefull
What do people need to know about your character from the start?
Wdym ?
I played a wizard. I therefore had to explain how my character became a wizard.
In this case: he met some peril, which he only escaped thanks to the discovery of a spellbook.
So he's a wizard that was born into a barbarian family so he ran away into the city where he was mentored by an old wizard
I didn't bother determining what that peril was, because it didn't matter in the moment.
That's kind of the tagline
I deliberately left a hole that we could fill in later.
The ya go! That's a great start.
3 parts you need, where did you come from, how did you get your skills/powers, why are you out adventuring
As a DM, I see two holes here, which is good.
Why did he run away, and who was this wizard?
That gives me room as a DM to help tie things into the story.
I might then ask clarifying questions to help you fill in the parts I need to know, or I might surprise you in-game by filling them in myself.
I kinda imagined it as like he would get harrased by his tribe cus he's not much of a fighter
So I should leave it vague intentionally ?
I dunno about "should", but that's how I'd do it.
Ok
Yeah, it's not a matter of should. It's just doing so gives your DM something to work with in drawing your specific character into the game and maybe using it for later story fodder. Whether you want that or not is up to you.
D&D is about you and your friends telling a story together. Keeping it vague gives others the opportunity to help shape the story.
Also I've kinda been struggling to make another character where should I look for inspiration when I'm blanking
Borrow from media you like.
Not that you'll make that character directly in the game, but they can be a starting point.
You can also just browse through the available character options and see if anything sparks an idea.
Wdym character options ?
You can also just use random character generators to see what comes up and if there's an idea you want to run with as is or tweak to suit your tastes.
Look at the races and classes.
Races, classes, backgrounds, etc.
Oh ok
Don't put too much pressure on yourself as a new player to generate a bunch of character ideas. I suspect the more you play, the more you'll come up with new possibilities.
is alchemist a int check or a wisdom check?
Alchemist is an artificer subclass.
An alchemist is an INT-based subclass, but I don't understand what check you mean.
Alchemy itself isn't inherently tied to an ability score. Your DM can choose whatever they feel is appropriate for the given scenario.
i mean alchemist supplies sry
Tools aren't inherently tied to an ability score, either.
But if your character has proficiency with alchemist's tools, they could add their proficiency bonus to any applicable ability check regardless of which ability is used.
Tool use is not tied to a single ability, since proficiency with a tool represents broader knowledge of its use. For example, the DM might ask you to make a Dexterity check to carve a fine detail with your woodcarver's tools, or a Strength check to make something out of particularly hard wood.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Tools
so the dm might ask me to make a int check when i do something with the alchemist supplies?
I could even see a Dex check being called for.
Or CON. 😛
Extremely muscular alchemist flexingly mixing chemicals with all their strength
Or they might ask you for an unrelated check, and you might then suggest the use of your tool proficiency.
what is everyone's thoughts on using chatgpt to help you make stuff like homebrew or backstories some people don't encourage it some people do and I would like your opinions on this subject ?
If you can give me a good reason for why your alchemical training applies to the situation at hand, I'd probably let you do it.
That's not a newcomer question, and you already asked that in another channel.
Yeah sorry i just wanted you peoples answer to that question
I definitely wouldn't trust it for homebrew.
And I'd rather come up with my own stories. 😅
I definitely wouldn't trust it for anything
Ok thank you for your help
when i use alchemist supplies and the dm ask for dex check am I allowed to add the tool proficiency bonus?
Backstories, its probably fine, because it can be a springboard for your own ideas. You never just use its output directly. It always requires refinement and editing. I would avoid using it for homebrew at all costs though.
If you're proficient with Alchemist's Supplies!
ok cool thanks for the infos
Considering it will have been trained on the homebrew they found posted online, and how much awful homebrew exists online, I am going to say "Garbage In, Garbage Out"
So as a criminal monk what starting equipment do I have? (I’ve been looking and I’ve honestly just been very confused 😭
Whatever the monk class has for starting equipment.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Equipment6
- (a) a shortsword or (b) any simple weapon
- (a) a dungeoneer’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack
- 10 darts
So for this I would have to choose either a short sword or a simple weapon and a dungeoneer’s pack or a explorer’s pack?
Yep
Same!
I want to make friends here

ty!
I want friends not to just immediately rush into a game
I have tons of readings to do before playing the game itself
As of now im only familiar with jrpg
Fair enough
Yeah ^^
Wow that's a lot
Dungeons and Dragons is a big game with a lot of rules! Thankfully, the only ones you need to keep track of are your own. The most important are building your character, knowing how rolling and skill checks work, and what you can do on your turn in combat.
On DnD beyond the Paladin is mentioned as Charisma and Wisdom Character, can you choose either or do you go CHA WIS and CON on him ?
Charisma is the main ability stat for paladins. Con is important because paladins are a melee class. Wisdom is good for a lot of ability skill checks and saving throws.
im pretty sure thats just the saving throw and doesnt mean that its the most important stats for the class necessarily
The Quick Build for Paladin suggests this instead:
First, Strength should be your highest ability score, followed by Charisma.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/paladin#CreatingaPaladin
yeah those are just the saving throws. your spellcasting is always CHA based, and you can chose to go dex or str freely for your weapon attacks, though STR fits a bit more natural
As others have pointed out, you are looking at the two stats in which PAL gets saving throw proficiency. All that means is that when you make a saving throw for either of those, you add your proficiency bonus in addition to your modifier for that stat
Further, if you read through the PAL’s actual class features you will see that CHA is used, not WIS
ohh yea my bad haha thx
Cantrip is one action, but what if I use my mace (Cleric) can I then use a Cantrip as an action and why?
Nope! The Attack action costs one action and the Cast a Spell action costs one action. Most of the time, you only have one action per turn.
there are features that allow you to do as such but in a normal situation you cannot both attack with your mace and cast an action cantrip
Cantrip is the “Cast A Spell” Action
can you ever use a cantrip as a bonus action?
Each spell (cantrip or leveled) will list its casting time
If your spell has a casting time: Bonud Action, then yes
Otherwise, no
There are certain features that m change the casting time, but those are specific to those situations
It was sacred flame that I was able to use after previous action, can't remember which one (according to dm)
(I don't believe there's any official cantrips with a casting time of 1 bonus action.)
Shillelagh and Magic Stone
Clerics have a decent number of spells that take a bonus action to cast, such as Healing Word and Sanctuary. If, on your turn, you use your bonus action to cast one of those spells, then you can use your action to cast a cantrip such as Sacred Flame. That might have been what your DM was telling you. But since Sacred Flame takes an Action to do, and attacking with your mace takes an action to do, you cannot do both in the same turn, without one of the very specific game features that either grant you a second action or change the action type it takes to do either of those things
How do most campaigns manage leveling up for characters, I’ve heard milestones is the way to go but I’ve also heard XP is preferred, which is best?
Neither is 'best', really. Milestones are much easier to keep track of, though.
Either way, it's something your DM decides, so you can sit back and leave it to them!
The individual DM decides.
Milestones is easier because there's no XP to track.
If you are asking which is more common, it seems in my own personal experience that Milestone is a little more popular, but I don't really know if that's just within my own friend group or if that's a general theme
What books should I get as a beginner players and dungeon master
The core books (Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide) would be a superb start. Have you played already?
I went to the library and got players handbook monster manual and dm guide to start
