I have two mini lists of DM pointers. The shorter, more big-picture list is here: #dnd-newcomers message

Howdy partners
Hi!!!
am new
Same thing
Anyone got any good recommendations for websites/tools to use when creating your dnd charectar, is dnd beyond the standard or are their other popular alternatives
dnd beyond is the best option
Hi everyone! Excited to be here!
I'm excited to be here too. Created a few characters on D&D Beyond and I'm hoping to put them to good use, even if I'm a beginner
Nice what classes
I’m thinking about attempting to join a game here as a player. I’ve never played with strangers before so is there anything I should know beforehand?
1st is a variety Human rogue who I want to multiclass into bard, 2nd is a halfling druid, and the third is a dwarf paladin
what the hell is an "encumbrance"
Question: Once I've asked about a game setup in #find-a-game i.e. putting in my info, how long does it take for a response?
How much weight you have on your inventory
whats the best class for each race? (5e races that are on dnd beyond)
Races dont really matter due to floating ASI’s in Tashas
There is no “best class” for a race anymore
Aside from the one that sounds the most fun to you.
Use session zero as an opportunity to ensure your playstyles and expectations mesh. If they don't hold a session zero, maybe don't play with those folks.
thanks i because i wanted to do a teifling for the next campaign but didnt know if three was a certain class that was best because ive already had a soccer tiefling and wanna do something other then that
Make whatever combination of race or class you want
Make sure to ask your DM if the Tasha's rules apply. If yes, you can distribute the +2 / +1 how you feel. If not, the +2 in Charisma especially leands itself to Charisma casters likes Sorcs, Bards, and Warlocks, but also Paladins. And even if they don't let you use the Tasha's rules, you can still play any class you want. You can have great fun with an unoptimised character.
what are the tasha rules?
So, before Tasha's Couldron of Everything was published, each race came with certain stats, right. So +2 CHA +1 DEX for Tieflings, or +2 STR +1 CON for half orcs. In that book, they introduced the alternative rule that every player can just pick stats to add +2 and +1 or 3x +1 to. So you could make a Tiefling with +2 CON and +1 INT if you wanted.
Did you read #find-a-game yet?
And did you type /looking-for dm and wait for the bot to give you a form to fill out?
But since that's an alternative rule, not every DM does accept that. Some may prefer to run their game without that ruling.
ohhh yeah in the previous gaes it wasnt like that at all (and probably because we used dnd beyond for characters and idk if it does that?)
So, Tasha's rules are optional, not compulsory?
Honestly, the vast majority probably will accept it, but it is common curtesy to at least ask before presenting a character that makes use of alternative rules.
DND Beyond can absolutely do that!
Exactl! Very little is actually compulsory in DND and anything published after the PHB and DMG is more ore less popular to use.
"Can I use Tasha's rules in my campaign?"
"You can certainly try..."
Tashas rules, while optional, are very much the desired direction the D&D owners and creators would like the game system to move towards.
Well, that's another £30 doing down my account...
Which is perfectly understandable. There was a big movement to move away from certain stereotypes regarding the DND races. So now, you have official rules to back up that not all half orcs have to be stupid, evil brutes.
wait really?
is it like the paid for one or the free one tho?
If you want materials that are not in the SRD or free basic rules, you have to buy them - regardless if it's on DnDBeyond, Roll20, or Fantasy Grounds which are the only places licensed to sell digital version of those materials.
What's the SRD?
ohhhh
^ That - it's basically the materials D&D releases for free so others can build things for the game system.
Ah. Thanks
If you get Tasha's on DNDbeyond, whenever you create a character, the first page is the home tab. If you scroll down far enough, you'll see a little toggle for "Customize origin". By turning that on, you get to redistribute your class boni when you get to the ability tab.
what's constitution do
Represents your toughness - plays a role in your HP - see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoreSummary
Background provides some mechanical effects (usually skill and tool proficiencies) - it describes like where your character came from or their previous career/life before they became an adventurer.
so i can set that myself?
I would suggest checking with your DM and group before setting a background (unless you're just playing around with making characters). That way you don't end up with a background that doesn't work for the kind of D&D game/setting you're playing in - like having a Sailor background when you're actually in a desert setting. Things like that.
gotchya
Where do I find DNDbeyond or do I just look it up
Thank you
You're welcome!
Easy: sand ships.
Could flavor sailor into like, caravan worker?

Hi. I'm new to the whole DnD stuff. I've been exposed to it here and there in various shows and movies. The thing that has gotten me into it recently is Critical Role. I'm wanting to get into more and hopefully start playing. Would anyone be able to possibly help me?
You can flavor a background however you like long as rhe mechanics are unchanged
That is the beauty of flavor
Check the linked materials in the post above
thats what im saying. id just say the free passage thing would only then apply to caravans
Strength is how well you can crush a tomato
Dex is dodge a tomato
Constitution being able to eat a bad tomato
Intelligence is knowing tomato is a fruit
Wisdom is knowing not to put tomato in a fruit salad
Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad
Seems reasonable
old meme
Your DM has final say but it seems like it is fine
Yes, gotta expose the newcomers to it
I'm waiting the perfect response
thats actually a great analogy tho
hoping someone could help me with D&D Beyond, im trying to put together a lvl 5 character for an upcoming Adventurers league event and am trying to put together a beast master ranger. I have tashas and from what i understand i can swap out natural explorer/favored enemy for Deft Explorer.
When i'm creating the character though it doesnt give me the option to do anything other than picking favored enemy/natural explorer
On the class page, there should be a dropdown next to the class feature dropdown called “optional class features” or something like that
You can select it under there
Happy to help
do you have a recommendation for what languages would be decent to learn for adventurers league?
didnt know if there were common languages that may get more use
well other than common lol
Draconic, elvish, and dwarven are pretty common as well I think
I wish it would tell me what languages i already know based on my race. Do Eladrin get access to sylvan? or elvish? or do they have their own language?
Your race gives you common and one other you choose, sylvan would probably the eladrin’s native language
do beast master rangers not get access to spells? the character builder didnt ask me to pick any spells and i was just curious if it was because i picked some additional features or just part of the class
wasnt sure if hunters mark is a standard rangers thing or if it was attached to a certain subclass
They do, you pick them in the spells drop-down in the same place
Rangers get spells at level 2, so if you're making a level 1 character that could be why you didn't have he option
im making a lvl 5
Ah in that case no clue!
Yeah it’s the spell dropdown alongside the class features and optional class features drop-down
That’s where you pick spells
ahh okay so i just click on add spells and put whatever i want?
so it says Known Spells 0/4 so i get 4 spells at lvl 5?
You get a certain number of cantrips and a certain number of normal spells
Yup
Wait sorry rangers don’t get cantrip
So yeah 4 spells in total
okay ill probably go with hunters mark and goodberry then, and maybe look at something defensive
is there somewhere i can see what my options are for a primal companion? I picked beast of the sky
Like for how it looks?
oh i thought i got to pick what my animal companion would be
You do
and theres no limitations?
i figured there were certain animals that fall into certain categories
Well choose something kinda appropriate for a small flying creature but apart from that go wild
Just keep in mind that it doesn’t change how it works
There isn't a real limit in that (outside of the usual dm approval)
The stats remain the same for the creature, so its just up to you to pick a fitting creature 😎
ahh cool so i can just say its a primal hawk
Yep!
awesome
hmm i dont see the bonus actions listed in the character sheet for them, is there somewhere else they'd be?
oh i see i have to click on it
Yep
and then the take action comes up
You go into the actions box then click bonus actions
Hello
I wanna try playing a simple game of DnD, but I'd like to know the basics first
If anyone runs a game that would be fitting for this, like a quest for delivering a letter to the squad leader's granny

I was about to ask the same, thanks man!
Samee bro
How do I get to know the rules of dnd?
Dosh just sent a link
do not fret friend it is on the dyno link
yeah its up there
I see
Ok then thank you
I was also wondering about the customization of dnd. Should it just be a strictly fantasy setting with fantasy characters or can I make something in a different setting with different characters?
If you're the Dungeon Master, you can make any kind of world you want! If you're a player, you'll have to ask your DM what kind of world they'll be using
My bet is it depends on the DM
There is laser pistols in the Item list, just as an FYI c: so really you can make a cowboy bebop themed dnd session
I bet some are cyberpunk with cience and technology based powers
I see. And I’d like to be a dm but, idk how to get there
Or a group of magical ladybugs that have to fight evil frog wizards
I’ve heard you need to be a player first
If you're looking to become a DM, start with the basic rules. It's more difficult than being a player, and requires more time and planning, but it's still very doable! My first DnD experience was as a DM!
I see, that’s great news. Because I do have a horror/mystery type story I’d love to try
I’ll look into it
I might be wrong but I assume you want to go for a simple quest run before going for more lore heavy stuff
Like, helping an old lady get safely to the next town

I am now wondering if the player manual for dnd beyond is still up to date or which one I should buy? As far as I know, dndn 5e is the latest version (at least I think so). Sorry if this is a strange question or if it's already been answered somewhere but I'm a bit overwhelmed with everything and I don't really know where to start.
I see
I just noticed, all newbies here are paladins loooooool
That's correct, DnD 5th edition is the most recent (though they are in the works for the next version). DnD Beyond has all the most up-to-date options available
I assumed it'd be easy to begin with
Just hoping to be a chill member of a party and support and do sum damage and
Try to convince the party to do the right thing if possible
Also about characters. Do I have to be the races and species in the base game or can I be something else?

Hello
Salutations!
I'm trying my best to learn how to play since I think I'll be interested in this. I have a lot of questions (since I'm very new to this) so I'm sorry if I ask too much.
No harm in asking lots of questions
However, good way to get questions about playing D&D answered before you ask them is to check out the basic rules

Not me. I'm a Rogue
As well as me I’m a Ranger
Understandable. In my case I just assumed Palading would be noob friendly starting class
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).

Handbooker helper are great videos
I am brand new to this game i know next to nothing about it I know there’s dice and that’s basically all that I know 🥲 I’ve tried my best to understand when people explain it to me but I just can’t for some reason so maybe if there is a website or something that can explain it to me like I’m 5 years old that’d be great 🥲

Bc it seems really cool I’m just absolutely clueless on where to start learning
I didn’t know there was basic rules🥲 I’ll read them as soon as I can (I don’t have good internet connection rn)
The basics of it is is a pretend game of make belive where we get to step into a fantasy world and tell great stories
I like this description from Sly Flourish:
- The DM describes the situation.
- The players describe what they want to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results.
Lather, rinse, repeat, and you got yourself a story. It’s make-believe with rules so that everyone is working within established boundaries.
Hi, I’m new here, a pretty basic player that enjoys more goofing around and story building than action.
Go to YouTube or you can go to the official D&D website and learn. I hope this helps
Hey everyone 🙂
hello 👋
if i were to join a game lfp and leave if i didnt mesh with the gameplay, would that be okay?
You should never feel compelled to stay with a game you're not enjoying. You play because it's fun; if you're not having fun, consider how you can. If that means walking away, then you should do so.
The flip side of that is that you shouldn’t just ditch haphardly. Talk to the table before and if any issues arise to see if things can be worked out
Be respectful of everyones time
Hello, I am assembling a group of 6, and one of us is dyslexic, is there a site that sells a digital/physical version of the players handbook thats dyslexia friendly?
Not that I'm super familiar with, unfortunately. There are plenty of videos that cover basic rules, such as the Handbooker Helper series, which might help, but that's only a stopgap
ah, thanks for that. Hopefully someone eventually makes a translater or something?
Seems like good feedback to give WotC directly.
ooooo thats a great idea
hiii !
hello all, I'm a new player to the D&D community!
Howdy same
any particular races that go very well w spells and a supportive yet powerful style( want to heal and buff teammates, but still be able to do my own stuff, hence my main focus being spells)
i was thinking half elf, but not really sure
Any race can be any class. Pick what sounds fun or interesting!
A handful of races off some benefits with built in limited spellasting but for a new player those edges arent relevant
Current set of rules allow any race to be perfectly functional with any class
im kind've looking for recommendations, i dont know which race to pick so im asking the community which ones generally go well with both my playstyle and general class choices
We do have #character-discussion for questions like this. But if you don't have a group yet, any character you're making at this point is really practice, so it doesn't matter too much what you pick. Try out different options, see which spark your imagination.
I'm looking to join a campaign as a newbie to D&D
ah, i shall go there then, I do have a group, but for ALL 6 of us, none of us have played before and are starting via making a char

we dont have a dm...
we are 6 w no dm, bc none of us have played EVER
Lots of groups start that way with one person taking up the DM role and everyone learning together. Not saying you need to do it. Just pointing it out as an option.
Yeah. Dms can learn as the players do.
Does anyone know how I can start as a dm or learn how to
Have you played before, or are you new to D&D as a whole?
I’m new but I’ve been doing lots of research and watching vids just can’t find peeps to play with
Was trying to be a player but it’s hasn’t been easy so I just thought I’d make my own
So an important question: do you want to learn enough so you feel ready to run for people, or do you want to recruit people to learn alongside? Because that determines the order of operations somewhat.
I want to learn mostly but if I enjoy dm I might just stick to it and continue learning the art of dm
Learning to DM is a process; it's not a thing you complete really. So that's an important thing to establish upfront.
My suggestions:
-
Learn the rules. You don't need to memorize them, but you should know the gist behind combat, spellcasting, and such. Read through the Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
-
Pick an adventure. You could make one yourself, but I'd recommend going with a pre-made so you're not inventing the wheel even as you're learning how to drive. If you're worried about the commitment, there's a bunch of one-shots (AKA stories designed to be finished in one session). Plenty of those on DMsGuild (https://www.dmsguild.com/) and here are some other options (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/43718-list-of-free-dnd-campaigns). Read through it and take notes.
-
Watch some streamed games—professional, amateur, doesn't matter a ton. The point is just to see examples of how people run the game. You can find games on YouTube and Twitch at nearly any given hour.
-
For anything you want to know more about, there are tons of YouTube videos and blogs full of DM advice out there. My favorites are Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series, Sly Flourish's blog/books, and blogs by the Angry GM, the Alexandrian, and Johnn Four (Roleplaying Tips).
I have a PDF of DM resources I can send you if you like.
I'd also recommend keeping an eye on #dm-discussion. Even if you don't participate, you can learn a lot just by "listening."
Thank you very much I appreciate the info and your help as well as the links to all this information I’ll read through this try to make my own one shot thanks 👍
I think I watched almost twenty videos on making one-shots on YouTube. There's lots of info out there, and you can always ask for advice over in #dm-discussion. Good luck!
Thanks 🙏🏼
hey i'm pretty new in the D&D space can someon explain a litle bit how it works because i heared many good things about d&d so i wanted to try it out

but what if i wanted to start my own game? is that possible?
I use fantasy grounds for online gaming with friends. You can get it from steam easily and it has ready adventures there also.
Absolutely! Being a DM as a new arrival to DnD can be difficult and does require some patience and effort, but it can be very fun! My first time playing DnD was as a DM.
DM = dungeon master? (remember i'm new to this 😉
That's correct!
but why can't i be a player and search a dm?
You could do that as well!
because maybe it is better to just play and maybe become a dm after some time you know?
Yeah, it's always good to get a bit more experience if you're not feeling sure.
but like when we do discord voice calls when we play hwo can we role dice?
i'm asking stupid questions i know
There's lots of different ways, and the DM usually decides what the group will be doing. There are some bots on discord that can roll dice for you, and there are programs called Virtual Table Tops which can also act as dice rolling mediums
oh ok and you create your character thrue d&d beyond website or isn't that how it is working?
Many people use DnD Beyond, but you also could fill out a Character Sheet the old fashioned way if you wanted.
i like me some technology so i will do it through the website hahahaha
is there any free virtual table tops that i can use to rol dice?
Sure! I know some popular free options are Owlbear Rodeo or perhaps Roll20
You can even roll dice on Google if you search "roll 1d20" for example
but what would you recomend owlbear rodeo or roll20
I've never used either, so I couldn't say. I use a paid VTT.
Im new to DnD and would like to join a campaign.

Yooo i just joined
Hi
I’m currently playing an elf sorcerer
Ooooh sounds cool whats her name?
Lia Freestryde
Damn thats cool as heck
I play a rouge tiefling called Mirage
Have no clue what a cunning action is so i homebrew tge living heck out of my campaign so its not even dnd anymore😭💀😹
Why?
Stick with the core rules until you learn them before you start homebrewing. Otherwise you'll break things you don't know how to fix.
Well damn i messed up already
That’s an awesome name for a rogue
Dnd is complicating for me yk
If you don't know how the game works, don't homebrew it or else the game will almost definitely fall apart
You should try and learn the proper rules rather than making homebrew patchwork solutions
Cunning Action is a rogue feature at 2nd level
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#CunningAction
What do you know?? First of all do you know ability score modifiers
If yes, do you know proficiencies and proficiency bonus
Thanks guys for the support i really feel welcomed. W server
Yep i know like the core rules but idk like what every class does so i gotta google it
Memorizing every class isn't needed, I still don't know most druid features and subclasses and it's been a year
Ohh okay😂
I'll learn it when I need it but focus on what's needed right now
Yeah i know how to play but idk the like really complex stuff that i dont need
Cunning action just lets you dash, disengage or hide as a bonus action
How many metersfeet
Dash let’s you move your movement speed
Wow even if i moved alr?
Damn thats actually broken ngl
But it takes your bonus action
It’s not rlly, a powerful build will have other uses for their bonus action that may be more valuable
Dash is just extra movement for the exchange of actions
You know action, bonus action, movement and reactions right? Cunning action lets you use 3 specific actions as a bonus action.
Dash: double your movement (dash)
Disengage: nobody can opportunity attack you (when you leave someone's range they can hit you as a reaction unless you disengage)
Hiding: Pretty simple, you have advantage on attacks when they can't see you and they don't know where you are
How do you climb in dnd and if so, how much feet can you climb
It's all in the Basic Rules.
Depends on if you have a climb speed
Oh okay
If you have a climbing speed, that climbing speed, but most people move at half speed and may have to make an athletics or acrobatics check for difficult climbing terrain
Thank you guys so much
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#ClimbingSwimmingandCrawling
Each foot of movement costs 1 extra foot (2 extra feet in difficult terrain) when you’re climbing, swimming, or crawling. You ignore this extra cost if you have a climbing speed and use it to climb or a swimming speed and use it to swim. At the DM’s option, climbing a slippery vertical surface or one with few handholds requires a successful Strength (Athletics) check. Similarly, gaining any distance in rough water might require a successful Strength (Athletics) check.
Now i need only one tip.....how do i make people interested in dnd
I don't understand feet measurements I need meters
I dont got no party😭👍
Except for more experienced DMs games, they have some insane combat environment
You don't know the terrain or the battle so "shouldn't" is an awfully strong word.
5 feet= 1 metter aproxymetly
Introduce them to baldurs gate 3 and it will ping their interest in the subject
Learn French is literally the only way to have metric dnd
The basic rules in french are metric iirc
Ah shit
I think 5 feet is aproximetly i meter
5 feet is about 1.5 metres
I will just pull out my calculator
You get used to it, I do still have to google pounds to kilogrammes
I goofled it
when Americans tell me they can lift 265lb and I don't have a clue if that's good or bad
Would it be a good idea to play dnd without reading the newcomer guide?
Playing without learning the rules would probably be a bad idea
Its 5 feet equals 1.52 meters just so yall know😊👍
Mk
I just run a foot as being a third of a metre even tho it's 0.305 and not 0.333 ongoing
But its just really long
Why would you tho
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Imperial system is cringe ngl
There's probably a YouTube video somewhere explaining the rules if you don't want to read
Miles are insane it's like 1306 feet or sum
K
Damn I was way off 5280
Imagine playing but using a coin instead of a D20
Km is just 1000m
There's systems that work like that
Like for americans its easier to say half an inch/ one quarter of an inch than just 15 mm💀💀(i didnt fact cgeck the measurments bc its a joke)
That would be really fun but also really triggering for me😹
Let's make sure to keep the channel clear for folks to ask new-to-D&D questions and move off from the measurement conversion discussion...
I hate the word triggering so much 😭
You could say I'm triggered by the word triggered
Ok bro thx
Indeed but let's get back on topic - thanks!
Hello everyone
Would i be screwed if I didn't have any die available
no because there are many online dice rolling tools and many groups may even share their dice - that said, dice (digital or physical) are kind of important to the game
Ok thx
DND Beyond has a free dice rolling feature
Didn't know that
Yea you can as many dice as you can click to choose at once
Oh
If you have a character created in the app you it’ll auto add your modifiers but you have to watch out because it won’t add some modifiers like if you’re raging
Could someone help me with my DMing im just a starter i would appreciate some help
Head on over to #dm-discussion to ask for DMing advice.
ok
Hi everyone just started getting into dnd. Any character/class advices? like whats easy go get into and still has a lot of options. (yeah I know everything can work and can be fun but in your opinion :D)
Thought so seemed like it. Probably not bad if I'm also still working on role play i guess
Yeah
Ight like i know its alot but like how do i even make a character or play the game cause i dont have anybody to play with so yeah
Have you read the basic rules?
oh nah
Start by doing that, they’re linked in the pinned messages
ok and how do i play with people man cause i dont know anybody who plays
check out #find-a-game
Once you know the basics we have channels here to help with finding a game
wait you can play online n shit? thats big
all you really need is a pen, paper and some dice. If you can speak with people over discord you can play dnd with them
Well just finished my first run with my artillerist! Thanks for the advice the other day it was very helpful
hello everyone 🙂
Hi
so, I've never played before ever...if anyone has any good recs for places to maybe play online and what not? I don't have people to really play with lol
Have you read the basic rules?

Nice! We have the #find-a-game channels for finding online games

so I’m a pretty new player, so far I’m playing a campaign with 3 of my real friends; I wanna get into DMing because I really love writing and such, any tips/advice?
I have some comments you might benefit from reading: #dnd-newcomers message and #dnd-newcomers message
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
?newdm

Is it bad that one of my players died to a door
Sounds like a tuesday
Did you call 911?
Couldn't we were in a tavern full of mercenaries who went against the kingdom
Very normal sounding tbh
So guards couldn't help at all
Sorry I was joking about "player died" rather than a "player character died"
Was quite funny too, he was on full health, then got hit by a door because I was introducing a later enemy(he kicked the door down ) and he thought it would be funny to roll for damage, he rolled a little too high and we were using a homebrew rule which allowed stacking of dice if you rolled the highest number, he did that like 4 times
Died
Instantly
Probably shouldn't have used a d20 for damage
But we only had thatl
You are playing DnD and only have a single d20?
You don't have any other dice?
That’s a very weird damage rule
There are free dice roller apps...
I’ve played games where a nat20 meant instakill, but never to roll it as damage
Before we could get a d20 we had 2 d6's that did everything
We literally too broke to afford any other dice XD
Let alone a phone
Now I have 2 of all the ones I need
I would use an online dice roller
Free dice roller apps
Stores will lend or outright give you dice to get you in the door
Hey is there any places in this server that I can learn about D&D into more depth?
This channel.
Does anyone know where to start for a new dm? im compleatly new to dnd
This message and the ones following might help: #dnd-newcomers message
thanks
Anyone have any tips for stuff to buy to learn more and get better acquainted with dnd such as rule books or tutorial books
You don’t need to buy anything to get started, the basic rules are free online
Start with the free basic rules and if after playing the game you really like it, the Player's Handbook is a good starting book to get.
Which is more commonly used as the character advancement method, Milestone or XP?
Milestone
oh ok sweet where would I find the free rules for it I was curious made a character and everything just got back because I got hurt pretty bad irl so now I can continue my curiosity
I couldn't really say - it's very dependent on the DM really.
The basic rules are linked in the pinned comments
ok sweet thank you
Would it be reasonable to ask to re-flavour a weapon to look like a pre-existing weapon?
So basically my GF is making a Kobold named Pickles, and they aren't very strong physically, but they instead their points invested into dexterity, constitution, and charisma. They're a fighter btw
Finesse weapons allow dexterity to be used instead of strength, but my GF wants to use to use a mallet of some sort. So, would it be a reasonable request to reflavour the schimtar for example into being a mallet/hammer?
As long as you're just making cosmetic and not mechanical changes, that should be fine. Flavor is free. But do check with the DM.
Question on spell casting. A lot of spells require your character to have certain items and these items can be quite specific yet random. How do DMs usually handle obtaining these? For example a spell needs the heart of a hen. My character has to find and kill multiple hens in advance?
That depends on the DM. A component pouch or a spellcasting focus allows the character to cast any spell that doesn't have a component with a cost; it's just assumed a pouch has the necessary materials (barring ones with a gold value). See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#MaterialM
Also worth noting, you would not necessarily need multiples of anything outright, so only one hen may need to pay the price. Unless a spell consumes its material component, you can reuse the material infinitely and thus would only have to acquire it once.
where's a good place to start playing? like, online
if I can't really muster up anyone in my friend groups IRL to play, but still think dnd is really cool
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
If you have no luck here, there are a bunch of other places to look for games and groups. I rounded up several in this guide: #third-party-tools-archive message
What are some of the biggest things to know as a beginning player?
I’d recommend at least knowing these common terms, what to do on your turn, and how your character’s own abilities work.
Your fun is not more important than anyone else's.
When there's a problem or something you're not digging, communicate that. If people don't help you resolve it or find a compromise, find another table.
so spellcastin focuses have to occupy a hand?
Not all
Most do, but paladins and clerics can have their holy symbol on a shield or armor
Are there any real differences between Grovel, Cry, and Beg for Kobold vs Draconic Cry for Kobold aside from Draconic Cry being a bonus action?
Draconic cry can be used proficiency bonus times per long rest, as opposed to once per short/long rest
Draconic cry is a straight upgrade
And do they function identically RP-wise? Or is Draconic Cry not wimpy like Grovel, Cry, and Beg is?
Ok, so she would need to ask the DM to reflavour it to be like actual crying rolling around on the floor type stuff, or ask to use the previous iteration of kobold then
Yeah flavour is free
Hi I'm new and was wondering which dnd books I should buy starting off besides the player handbook
Tasha's and Xanthar's would be the next two after the PHB to look at as a player
Alright tysm
In Dark Souls I like to play as someone who’s fast and can hit hard like they wear light armor but with a big weapon would that be a good or bad idea for d&d?
bad
Probably maxing dex as soon as possible just to be harder to hit? Cuz I know dms will be like “does a 30 hit?” So I’m thinking light armor probably isnt the best way to go to not get hit
you’d need good str and dex which is hard to come by
Speed isn’t really a big thing right (not talking about movement speed) being hard to hit relies on AC which would mean the heavier armor the better to not get hit?
when it comes to physical attacks yes
that could technically be a barbarian since I think they get unarmored defense
and they are proficient with big weapons
Just cheked, as a barbarian your AC when wearing no armor is 10 + DEX + CON modifier
but I do not know how well suited or useful this is
AC is an abstraction, it includes how strong your armor is AND how well you can dodge
this always perplexed me to a degree, why is someone in full plate hard to hit? it should be more like "the attack was not strong enough to damage" instead of "missed" but that's just me being nitpickish I think
They’re hard to damage
I was thinking a rogue with the defensive duelist feat and they already get uncanny dodge or just a fighter with defensive duelist
just one of those things that mechanically it is a straight forward thing; narratively you can explain the result of an attack roll however you desire
I am looking for A DM to help out a party of new players to learn the game who wants to be our DM
Post in #750812887697588356
I already did
a buddy of mine bit the bullet on learning to dm and im about to play my first real dnd game this week, so exciting
he seems to really like the idea of dming so this should be fun for everyone
What's the Wildemount Heroic Chronicle?
Hello! I am super new to D&D and will be joining my first campaign this evening! I am a half orc-ranger. is there anything you wish you would've known when you first started playing?
Gonna play my first session today with 3 other newbies , Is there anything I should know or should let the DM know? we're playing the Dragons of stormwreck Isle for 1~2 sessions
Hmm, probably that when you're planning on doing something, you should explain your intentions to the DM. They're there to help you, not hinder you
Gotcha, that makes sense, thank you
Can I be multiple classes like a fighter warlock or is it restricted to one class or does it depend on the dm
You can totally multiclass, but run it by your DM first
If you're new to D&D, I recommend that you learn one class before trying to multiclass right out of the gate.
Keep in mind you need to have a certain score in some stats to multiclass in and out of a class if that makes sense
Alright whats a good class to start with cause I made a high elf fighter class
E.g to multiclass as warlock you need a charisma score of 13 I think it is
All classes are good to start with, see what appeals to you
ok well I made a fighter class with the intention to eventually multiclass with some sort of magical class because a close range mage fighter is ideally what appeals most to me tbh
There are subclasses for some mage classes that are melee focused
I mean, as a Fighter you can already do that if you become an Eldritch Knight from your subclass choice at level 3
For example, the warlock has a subclass called hexblade which is very cool and very potent
ohhhh ok ok so I should make a mage class or stick with my fighter till I hit lvl 3 and that warlock class does sound pretty cool also while I got yall here how should I go about finding people to dnd with im really new to it and need to put a lot of studying in and dont want to be like a burden to someone who has a lot of experience
#find-a-game is your best bet for that
alright and you have any tips for my first time playing and should I have a art piece made for my character before I start or?
not necessary, no. If you wish to, that is entirely up to you; but, it is not required
And as to whether you should stick to a mage class or stick to fighter it's all up to you, if you want to play a close range magic caster sooner rather than later than a hexblade warlock is your best bet since that starts right at level one, however Eldritch Knight fighter is also very good but that comes later at level 3
You can use heroforge for that, it's a really nice little tool that helps you create models of your characters
alright and can you dm me a link for heroforge?
I mean pm ig the term dm can get a bit confusing in a dnd server lol
it's just heroforge and then .com on the end, I'd send the link but idk if this server allows that
ah alright thank you very much for the help
If you want some inspiration look in #dnd-heroforge-etc
Any time, it's always nice to see more people getting into DnD
oh yeah I got really interested in it after my older bro was telling me about his experienced
experiences*
?
Learn the rules of combat and your character's class and spells (if any).
Remember you are not the main character. You are one of many players so don't hog the spotlight.
Otherwise have fun.
well I know atleast 2 of us did that
don't know if the third guy did lmao
should read the barbarian skills just in-case
Do enemies die when their hp is 0 or do they also go unconscious
They die
Up to the DM to decide, but generally they just tend to die unless otherwise decided by the DM
Sometimes an attacker wants to incapacitate a foe, rather than deal a killing blow. When an attacker reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack, the attacker can knock the creature out. The attacker can make this choice the instant the damage is dealt. The creature falls unconscious and is stable.
Typically though depending on the type of attack and amount of damage a DM can definitely say it would kill
can you use maneuver precision attack to add flat damage to a connected attack?
Precision attack doesn’t add damage so no
what maneuvers add flat d8 damage?
Trip, disarming, distracting might be a few others
Lunging and menacing to add
ty
@anyone?
ive loooked thru that and im still confused
stuff like the gith, the most mundane of races, going on mukltiversal road dtrips and ransacking everything
and is knowledge of the multiverse commonplace?
I'm pretty new to DnD, I got interested in DnD via YouTube shorts can somebody help me in playing DnD/getting started?

Ok so stupid question but are there such things as better staff than the base staff? Like are there better versions that improve spellcasting more / help effectively channel magic through the focus more?
Staff of power, wand of the war mage are two off the top of my head
You can search magic items on dndbeyond
Can an enemy counter spell thunderstep or invisibility?
Does it have verbal or somatic components
when playing a paladin, is it better to put defensive buffs (such as protection from good & evil, shield of faith, heroism, etc.) on teammates to defend them, or on yourself so that you can be more effective at soaking up damage as someone usually at the front of the fight?
Teammates I think
If the party has a healer (cleric or something like this) it's nice to complement, but depends on what time of support you want to be.
Hello i am a newbie dm and i want to start a new campaing with friends, so any recommendations? We already played lost mines
Wild Sheep Chase sounds interesting and I think its free
just checked it and saw it's from lvl 4 and the party would like to start fresh
Curse of Strahd is very fun
You can look for PWYW on DMsGuild website for other 3rd-party D&D 5e adventures that are "Pay What You Want" (including free).
Or even just create a quest-giver NPC wizard that hires the party to gather resources for their magical experiments and just random-table the adventure.
But this is getting into DM territory so I'd point any further conversation on this towards #dm-discussion.
yea did that for a side quest once but ty
was thinking of starting curse of strahd but wasn't sure how complicated it is bc as i said still kinda new to dming and dnd in general
I can't speak for everyone's experience but I played it as my second campaign and I didn't really have any issues with it
ok will probably try it
im a new dnd player lfg

Greetings Adventurers! 🌟
I am thrilled to join this vibrant community of Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts and share in the epic tales that await us. My journey through the realms of D&D has been a whirlwind of excitement and wonder, and I am absolutely thrilled to be here.
The allure of rolling dice, creating intricate characters, and weaving stories with fellow adventurers has always held a special place in my heart. Whether it's the thrill of an unexpected crit, the camaraderie around the table, or the endless possibilities that lie within the rulebooks, D&D has captured my imagination like no other.
As a newcomer, I stand before you with the enthusiasm of a wide-eyed halfling setting out on their first grand adventure. The vast expanse of rules and lore can be a bit overwhelming, but fear not! I'm eager to learn, to embrace the nuances of the game, and to embark on an incredible journey with seasoned companions.
i just want to dive in and start my D&D journey, and I would be incredibly grateful for any guidance or advice you can offer. If there are any brave souls out there who are willing to take a fledgling adventurer under their wing and show me the ropes, I would be honored to join your party. Your wisdom and experience would be invaluable as I take my first steps in this magical realm.
So, dear adventurers, I beseech thee: share with me your wisdom, your tales of triumph and tragedy, and your guidance on how to begin this wondrous journey. Let's forge alliances, wield our imaginations, and roll those dice in the name of epic storytelling!
Man, I feel pretty stupid for starting out with "Hey, people!" ...and that's it....
Nah you’re fine. You can be as dramatic as you feel comfortable doing so.
Have you looked at the Basic Rules yet, @bronze pine ?
I am completely new here and to dnd, can someone help me a lil bit pls?
I'm sure folks would be happy to help.. if you can narrow it down to some questions you are having about the game
did i make a big mistake to order physical dice when i mostly play online?
Are you looking to make your first character?
Mistake is a value judgement. What I can say for sure is 99% of online groups will not accept physical dice rolls.
Well

The link Ester provided will take you to the space we used here to help connect people with groups and games.
- Are you making a character on a printed character sheet, a digital pdf or d&d beyond?
i know that they wont accept it
You can have them to have, you can display them, you can use them for your own projects, you could keep them against a day when you get to play in person. Whether that counts as a waste is up to you.
I would probably make one on pdf or beyond, but idk which one to choose
well that is one way to look at it
I'd say not a mistake. I have a bunch of dice and roll them for games. Sometimes a dm might ask for you to show them the die as it lays, but even then, I've not encountered that.
Rolling digital dice is nice because it is like being at the table and being able to see your friend roll - share in the moment and them - BAM - see the result. But physical dice are also cool
A regular pdf version will allow you to input any information you may have from physical books you own.
D&d beyond is great because it's fast and compact for making a character but unless you own or have campaign sharing access to the digital books, the characters will be limited to what is available in the basic rules
Which, there is nothing wrong with those races/classes etc. Just not as many options. 🙂
Get on to D&D Beyond, let it take you through the process. See where you get. There's a #character-discussion channel for talking about characters too.
I'm confused with good vs evil. If good is intent on not harming another creature. Would good be willing to suffer pain to themselves at the hands of evil in order to not harm evil?
I imagine there's some trigger point for good?
No, there’s no strictly-defined criteria.
What you’ve suggested is one possible interpretation of good, but not the only one.
Better in the #dnd-discussion channel than the newcomers', I think.
Thx. how about an example? How willing would Koleum be willing to strike his own 'walking dead brother' -- would he think twice. What about for another undead creature that resembled someone he 'sort-of' knew?
Koleum is A Dwarven Paladin of Moradin, that vows to fight for all that is good and uphold the laws of his home city Krettlemash. It's recently discovered an evil Necromancer inhabited an area near Krettlemash and has brought the dead to life from the graveyard just outside of town.
These are skeletons roaming the lands. Some of the dead, their bodies haven't fully decomposed, so there is some resemblence of the dwarf that is now undead. Koleum takes arms and defends the city and this Necromancers addiction of power. He recognizes one of the walking skeletons as his recently departed brother.
Lawful Good. (LG) creatures can be counted on to do the right thing as expected by society. Gold dragons and paladins are typically lawful good.
Neutral Good. (NG) folk do the best they can to help others according to their needs. Many celestials are neutral good.
Chaotic Good. (CG) creatures act as their conscience directs, with little regard for what others expect. Copper dragons and unicorns are typically chaotic good.
Yeah, this really feels out of scope for this channel. Worth talking about, but have a look at the other options.
That’s about all we have to go on.
But ultimately, how your character would react to a situation is up to you to decide.
Alignment is a description; it doesn’t make your choices for you.
And in certain scenarios, a character might take actions that don’t fit their stated alignment.
All that matters here is that you’re telling a story. What story do you want to tell?
Hello
thanks. i have a lot to read. it's really my 2nd post here and learning the server.
Hiii Sorry I do t know where to ask but me and my friend would like to play dnd but we don’t know much where should we go ?

How to play dnd
relateable
Free basic rules and guide videos are linked just above your post 👆
@deft sigil@wild onyxbtw thank you two, I finally created a first character 🫡
What did you make?
well my first dnd character, a dragonborn wizard/bard
Good stuff.
You’re multiclassing on your first character…?
If you're new to D&D perhaps, stick to one class for the time being to get used to it first.
Good INT, plus the bard jack of all trades, plus good CHA. Might not be the bravest in a fight but it's a direction with a lot of utility.
What else good comes out of the bard/ wiz mix, any suggestions?
Play what you find fun, yes it may be complicated as a first PC but some people like that
For reference: @slow hawk knows a thing or two about getting the most out of a single class character.
what do you mean by this
How to arrange your stats for maximum effect, best skills and features, that kind of thing.
If you are new , multiclassing only adds an necessary layer of complexity to character creation, as there are both rules to learn and decisions to make
i am indeed new
Also, what level is your new character? A level 1 character cannot be multiclassed by definition
erm are you talking to me or
The person who made a bard/wizard as their first character
But this applies to all new players
No it’s doesn’t stop telling people that, some people can defo play a multiclass as a first PC you don’t know their gaming experience or ability to understand rules
I appreciate it
I wanted to play an character which used to be a wizard but is more a bard due to his past, its for fun mostly
Some but not all.
Which I said, so cheers for the ping to restate what I said 👍
I'm not reinstating but the opposite — there is an assumption that new players posting here have little experience playing D&D so this is why some of us (pun intended) suggest the slower pace method of learning one class at a time rather than diving head into multiclassing.
I'm not going to dissuade them not to because it's their character.
Also, how is a lv1 character a wizard/bard?
dunno
Did your DM have all the PCs start at level 2?
Better question
You built a character
What level is it
hey i have a question, is it possible for somebody to give me a like example of hoe armour works?
I simply thought "wow what character classes would be cool? woah wizard sounds fun...woah i can choose more than one? bet i choose bard too"
There are several Armours in DND
what exactly dont you understand?
my ac is 12
Each Class has proficiency with diferent things
lvl 1, as I dont multiclass now, so I hope yall are chill now haha
You need to use the armours you have proficiency in
Your DM is the one who tells you what level to start off at. Typically for new players to D&D a DM would start them off at level 1 to get you to know the basics first.
Heavy armours also need a minimum of STR
i dont know
i wanna make a character nut idk how
First
You are level 1. You have one class
What Class you want to play?
correct, and before, when I was bard/wizard, I was lvl 2, very simple 🤷♂️
Have you read the basic rules, specifically the section on…armor?
wizard
i dont have one of those books
thats a good point, yet again, I just tried to have fun creating a character yk, no metagaming

I think before we delve into a billion questions, you set aside your character sheet, read through the rules first
i8 was just asking cause the armour class bit confused me
finish the materials
Re read anything you need to
Then
Come ask questions
thats like the issue idk why but its very hard for me to understand rules n shit from reading i think likeits visual learner hands on yk
also you dont need to read everything everything, but id say start with chapter 1, chapter 7 has important clarifications for things in chapter 1, chapter 5 for what equipment does what, then chapter 9 for combat
There are also YouTube videos if your you better with audio/visible means than text
The game is based on rules. You will need to read the rules at some point, even just for reference.
yeah im watching hambooker helper cause i will go isane reading
That's fair but also we do encourage as much self-learning as we can't teach everyone one on one all the rules to D&D. But let's step back and start with a character with no armor. Your AC is equal to 10 + dexterity modifier.
mk but what does armour do like reduce damage?
Then you start to layer on armor - armor adds a base AC and often allows some of your dex modifier onto that as well (for light and medium armor). Heavy armor just provides a set AC.
Armour Class is the number you need to meet or beat in order to do damage. Damage resistance is different thing.
AC represents how hard you are to hit and how hard it is to inflict damage on you - it's abstracted.
Your AC is like a threshold. An attacker has to equal or beat it to do damage.
so like if i have 14 armour class and a goblin swing at me and does like 8 damage he wont do anything to me?
The goblin has to achieve a hit roll of 14 or higher to hit you at which point they roll for damage.
So no damage is done until the enemy beats your AC.
a hit roll?
The damage roll and the roll to hit are two different rolls
The goblin makes an attack roll - that attack needs to meet or beat your AC to cause damage.
You roll a d20, add some modifiers, try to equal or beat the target's AC. If you do, roll for how much damage.
so he rools to see if he can get past my armour, then hits for damage if he does
Yup.
So if your AC is 14, the goblin needs to make an attack roll against you - if it meets your AC or beats it, it is a hit. The goblin then rolls damage.
You then reduce your Hit Points by the amount of damage the enemy did.
If the enemy did not meet or beat your AC in it's attack rolls, you do not take any damage.
okay
The same is true when you make attacks against enemy creatures - assuming your attack requires an attack roll, you roll a D20 and add any modifiers and bonuses. If it meets or beats the enemy's AC, you hit. You then roll the damage dice to see how much damage you did.
The DM will then reduce the enemies hit points by that amount.
Magic Missile isn’t technically an attack.
well d20's arent only used for that but in the sense yk
For magic missile, read the spell description.
It just automatically hits.
oh
Magic missile is an odd one because it automatically hits (there are also spells that require the enemy to make a saving throw instead of you doing an attack roll).
okay the magic missle says i roll a d4+1 force
Would a video tutorial help?
This is why you gotta go to the materials
Rules like how to calculate AC or wear armor invariably interact with other rules like how an attack works. You need to eventually learn the frame work as a whole
This isnt school, you dont have time limit
Read in smaller chunks at your own pace. Use notes or outlines as you go however u want
Watch the videos that walk you through it
And dont rush
You don’t have to do it at once.
but i wanna play today man and we only have the starter set
i just wanna find some people and try to play so i can learn or something but all the games are happening in like a week and they probably wont let me play cause i know nothing
Most groups are fine taking on new-to-D&D players as long as they show they're willing to learn and they connect well with the social dynamics of the group. No one expects anyone to know everything - but knowing how to play your character will help you have a better time playing D&D.
yeah but dude like i know litterally nothing and i dont want to have to pause the game and ask what shit is and does
I would like to join a new game, I’m a new dnd player
So skim over the free basic rules, particularly about how to create a character, and specifically about your race and class. Then watch some videos - the handbook helper ones are quite good. I'd also suggest watching a D&D liveplay stream so you can see some of these rules and game mechanics in action (but keep in mind most D&D streams are entertainment first and not training on the rules!). Then build a character and find a group to play with - again you don't need to know everything. You'll learn a lot by playing.

hello i’m new to dnd
Welcome!
thank you
This is what needs to change in your expectations
This is not a video game, its not a pickup game of hoops
Its a collaborative role playing game, it takes prep and it takes coordination between human beings
If you just want to be able to grab and go you should look elsewhere
Dnd isnt going anywhere. If you arent ready in a week thats fine
Whoever is the DM will need to take time to prepare (they need to know more about the rules than the players, they need to read up on the adventure, they need to set up maps)
As a DM, I spend more of my free time preparing for my campaign than with my wife during the weekends...
hello i'm new to dnd im onix
hello i’m new as well i’m Grim
beginner buddy
someone give this man a break
Whassup I’m new just wondering what id need to get if I wanna start playing online
i haven’t started one yet
have you made a character yet?
in general
im ps u dont need much a discord bot might be helpful
uh some what yea
on dnd beyond?
did you claim the free baldurs gate gazzetteer thingy?
the what
nope
idk what that is
its a free sourcebook you can get rn
in dnd beyond or is it a app?
in the app?
dnd beyond
you just go under sources and you look for baldurs gate gazzeteer
it’s called gazetteer?
yes
Also how does playing online acc work like the jist of it
Cuz I understand table top
Check this article out: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Ty
i dont think the gazetter has any mechanical stuff, just lore stuff
no it gives you a bunch of backgrounds aswell
it usually takes place on vc
but text is possible
Voice and text chat, sometimes Virtual Tabletop tools for maps and tokens.
just added things to players handbook backgrounds and one new background
and faceless isnt even new its from descent into avernus
better than nothing
eh?
basically
yep
just get into a vc with your charachter sheets and play dnd
yeah
mhm you could do text if u feel awkward with vc but overall vc is better
if your dnd has it he can make maps with tools like dungeon alchemist and then import them to tabletop sim and makes combat btter because you can see everything
idk first time i played was really fun unless you are playing with complete strangers and not friends you should be fine
All my friends are sporty like me so no one plays
You can find games/groups in our LFG channels - please read #find-a-game to learn more.
Sick
Can i join someone today to help me cuz this will be my first d&d ever
k
same here buddy
Yea
I dont even really understand the characters, i mean i ,did research but i just dont rlly get it
so what made ya'll interested in dnd?

^ Useful resources to help get you started with D&D
Been watching high rollers and dimension 20 for years
Just never played cuz none of friends play it
same
freedom to be something else and plus it seems fun
So i will be tyed to my character even if i also join an other campaign or another one after my original one?
i was always really interested in high fantasy stuff and i played a lot of games like that throughout my life and i have wanted to play it for a while now only recently got into it
its extremely fun
Brother I grew up on lotr and playing Skyrim
you are your charachter and your charahcter is you
It’s about time I play this
i 100% skyrim
Same 😎
and plus i grew up watching a lot of fantasy shows and horror films
But how do ik my character fits me if i cant switch every now and that to see what im missing out on?
what do you like
well if you join a different campaign you can make a new charahcter and if your charachter dies in your current campaign you can also make a completely new one
that’s a question you have to answer and discover but that’s my opinion
Generally each DM/campaign will have you switch up characters - that way the character fits the vibe of the D&D game being played as well as it helps round out the rest of the adventuring party.
ohh so how would i join a DM
procceds to exist without knowing anything about DnD except that its adventure time
i been reading the rules but i’m s idiot so i don’t get it
#find-a-game - read it. It explains ways to find a D&D game and how to use our Looking-For channels.
lol
its always adventure time in D&D
Just imagine an Adventure time gif
Yup!
are you fammiliar with the basics of high fantasy races and classes?
Somewhat
what do you know about them?
Bunch of races, different attributes- translates to different succession in dice rolls, and uh
Probably some more but i simply can't pull it out of my head
race ability score correlation isn't really a thing here
hard to find one DM to join they all seem full already
They all seem unaccepting of blueberries!!
blueberries?

I spent the entire afternoon tryina' find DMs, buuuuut having no experience dimped to come with its cons

,_ ,
yeah finding a dm is a bit difficult sometimes
did you read the basic rules? theyre free :D
i've tried writing a campaign once and i realized that i suck at writing interactive stories
they are very new
: D
Oh okay
yup so we have no clue
animator do you have a dnd beyond account?
i have finished my monk charater in dnd beyond
nice
yuh
whats his name?
Lance
and race
variant Human
ooo what weapon did u pick
i'm a new player and i want to ask about the ways in which stats of a character distinguish what they are allowed to do. i might be thinking about this wrong but the sort of thing i'm wondering about is like, are low int characters not allowed to make good decisions in combat?
i guess i should make decisions in combat based on what my character would do for like the whole roleplaying thing
i don't really know
hm
it's hard to not separate the roleplay and character flavor from the combat and character stats in my head
well low int would suggest they aren't really smart thats usually a barbarian trait but that doesn't mean they can't be an excellent fighter
they might just now understand magic items or big words or anything that has to do with some knowlegde of the arcane
A low Intelligence score isn't going to make a fighter ineffective in combat. Training and muscle memory supercedes memorization.
Look at predator animals (aka Beasts) usually have Int of 2 or 3 but they are still capable in combat, especially pack animals.
that makes sense i suppose
hm
i guess
hm
hm?
what starting weapon did you choose for your monk
dagger, scimitar, and a third one idk why but the items it gave me does
so a simple weapon a martial weapons and since you are a monk im guessing 10 darts
which is a ranged weapon
yea
fair enough i once made a monk charachter that i have in my backlog who has a quarterstafff as a weapon
he is a golden dragonborn
oh alright
but if i want to multi class is that a option?
Of course its an option
It has sone pre requisets though
It says it all in the basic rules
so do i have to start with one class? and then when i get to lvl 2 i can multi class then?
is what i am guessing
Exactly
You dtart as a levle 1 monk
And when you get to level 2 you can multi class into idk lets say a warlock
Then you would be a level 1 warlcok and a level 1 monk
But the thing with multiclassing
You can never become level 20 with any class
One of the youtubers I'm subscribed to joined a game of D&D, so I figured I'd give it a watch, and soon as I realized how it could be played I was immediately interested
I was aware of the game's existence (I mean who hasn't at least heard of it) but had never bothered to check it out, so really glad that happened 😎
You woukd be surprised a whole lotta people i know have never even heard of a D20
its not so bad if you dont get to 20 level in any class. its the journey that matters, not the destination. multiclassing gives more options and different skills and talents on the way
That is very true
Can you play DND by yourself or do you need other people?
D&D is designed as a social collaborative storytelling RPG game - meaning it's expected there's 1 DM and 3-6 players generally.
Some folks have developed tools to "play" D&D solo but that is not the general way to play.
hi im new
Welcome - check the pinned messages here in the channel for some useul reosurces to help get you started.
okay
i am sleepy now, its 5 am, i will check another time. sorry
No worries!
i want to play D&D but due to being neurodivergent, and english not being my first language i mostly cant understand how the game works. could someone explain to me how to play in a more "simple" way?
I am interested to hear too
Roll a d20 and add the relevant skill/attack/spell attack modifier to the roll and the DM will let you know if you have succeeded at what you want to do
That as simple and complicated as it gets
A simple way to get past a difficult enemy is to beat up the dungeon master
i don't know if this was a good example. wizards and other classes are often encouraged to dump charisma. does this mean if i want to play a charismatic wizard i need to increase my charisma, thus potentially jeopardizing my build? or can i ignore the low charisma and roleplay as someone charismatic anyway?
Dump strength
shouldn't they dump both?
This happened during a campaign I was playing, I was the dungeon master
stats are hard to come by sort of
wizards really need high dex and con to survive, and int to land attacks
Standard array 15/14/13/12/10/8 even if you had a 10 in charisma you could choose some charisma skills to get proficiency in
that makes sense
i'm not talking about the skills though, i'm talking about flavor wise
You can still play a highly charismatic character with a low charisma score
Think of character from tv with high int low charisma they are still likeable example sheldon from big bang theory
Your DM may let you roll persuasion(int) by using your knowledge
intelligence as a stat measures a character's mental acuity, memory, and ability to reason, iirc. so it's not so much about the specific skill of strategy during a fight
Oh no, I often do not support violence, but if you say so...
i think it was wisdom that measures someone's cleverness and practical intelligence, which if anything is more in-line with what you'd need in a fight, but as far as i know, people usually won't ask that you nerf your decision making during a fight because of your stats
What is your language
polish
Hello
@dense wedge do you want to simplify the game, or you want a brief explanation how to play?
My English is also not too good
If you arent fluent in polish, then…is that helpful?
Also, unfortunately this is an english only server.
what subclass would I pick to be an ice mage sorcerer?
Storm or draconic (white)
Use transmuted spell Metamagic to change damge type to cold on your spells
I am an air genasi so storm would make more sense right?
seems thematically fitting.
Depends what you find fun about the subclasses,
huh- i think you misuderstood me: im actually pretty fluent in both english and polish but since its not my first language, i still dont know many words/terms and thats the main reason why i dont really understand how the game works 😅
sorry for that
I've played thing like DND but I want to learn real DND will any help
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05OiKZgfz7hi_Gvw9hftY0LD&si=szgbVXl3klhu6Xvr good playlist of some of the rules

Free basic rules are in the pinned comments in this channel
i made a dnd beyond character and i don't have a campaign to play it in if anyone has a campaign that i could join id appreciate it greatly
