If one runs out of speed, does that mean u cant move for the entirety of the round?
How does one calculate the needed speed for every movement made? Or is it decided by the players themselves?
On your turn, you can move a distance up to your speed.
Most characters start with 30 speed, which just represents how much you can move in that 6 seconds during your turn
So with a walking speed of 30, you can walk 30 feet.
Certain scenarios like difficult terrain might increase the cost of movement, though.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DifficultTerrain
So with a walking speed of 30, you could cross 15 feet of difficult terrain.
But like, is there a set distance? For example, in a battle in a cave, I want to move from the left wall to the right wall
How much feet would that cost?
Many games will have a map divided into 5-foot squares. You just count it up.
Ahh, okay, got it, thx š
Yeah, that all depends on the cave.
If there's a map, you can usually figure it out for yourself. If not, you can ask your DM.
Leave it to your DM to decide, that's not something you have to worry about until you're in the cave
Google Images, search for battlemap, you'll see plenty of examples.
And you can either look at the battle map and count up all the squares and do the math yourself, or ask the DM "how far away is this thing I wanna interact with?"
Ohh, that makes sense, thanks <3
Btw, does 1 action = 1 turn? For spells. It says concentration can be broken, too. Howād that happen? Would that cost a spell slot then?
Other than getting hit
An action happens on your turn. It is not the entirety of your turn.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#YourTurn
Concentration can be broken in the following scenarios:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Concentration
Concentration happens after you've cast the spell (and used your spell slot).
On your turn you've got
- Your action
- Your bonus action
- Your movement
All of that is 6 seconds of time
Take note: not every spell requires concentration. Each spell that does will say so in its description. They tend to be the stronger spells, so concentration is the way the game keeps them balanced!
You can cast the big, strong spell, but are you gonna get beat up before you can get the most out of it? That's the kind of hard decisions you make
How do you get temporary hit points? Is it from a potion you consume, or is there a specific event/spell?
Does anyone have a like a dnd game I can join for beginners
Iād love that too, i think i can try understanding better with experience/in hand knowledge, but i feel u should ask that in find a game?
I could maybe dm a one shot to introduce you guys to the game if you'd like
We would need 2 more players
Wait, whatās āgame styleā?
Where have you read that?
In the find a game channel
I understand now tho, i didnāt read the example on the front š
hi guys im new
Hello
I would be able to join, it just depends on time and day. I havenāt played in over year
same
We can talk about that and find a time and day good for everyone
i can only play on sunday or saturday
I will then add the 4 of you as friends so we can make a private chat and organize this
whats the easiest class to use to learn dnd
Fighter
is cleric hard to use
A little
it uses spell slot right?
Depends on your definition of hard
cause all games i play. i always choose the support
so maybe i'll like bard or cleric
Hey hope everyone is well, I'm new to D&D but have some experience with tt wargames. Would love to join a group if anyone has space and is willing to deal with a noob haha
That is a nice and interesting path
I can include you on this beginners one shot i intend to run for these people
so when are we discussing the time to start the campaign
I'll have a quick read back but sounds interesting, thanks
Calm down, we'll talk š¤£
Allow me to add you all as friends so we don't flood this chat
im just so excited to play dnd for the first time
Cool a little one shot, I'm down if you are all cool with it
Same. Iāve been meaning to jump back in for a while
Question š„²ā can u reuse one character in different campaigns, or do u have to make a new one?
Guess it depends if they survive haha
I generally discourage reusing characters, but that is personal to each one
I think each adventure is more fun with their own new characters
Please accept my friend request
Not exactly
They do tend to spend a lot of gold on their spells!
what does BBEG mean?
Big Bad Evil Guy. It's the slang for the overall villain of a campaign
oh lol
Late to reply but gamestyle and playstyle talk about preferences and genres. The style of the game.
For example a game might be gritty survival- limited resources, stricter consequences so on.
Or it could be more light hearted fantasy.
Playstyle might be things like 'I prefer combat over RP', or 'I prefer silly fun games to serious games' so on.
Does anyone have any starting places I could go to for learning the basics/finding a game? Iām real new, have only played a single one-shot so if anyone knows any resources that could help I would appreciate it :)
This place! We have a #find-a-game channel which helps explain how to use this server to find a game

- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
And here's some starting links- the basic rules on dndbeyond are free and you can play a game just using those. Dndbeyond also has the free to use classes and races and such, and character sheets.
Don't feel like you need to read all the rules before finding a game. Most will click into place and you'll pick them up as you play, but finding a game can take a while so you can mess about trying to make characters to get a feel of the rules before then. Once you make one character you basically know how to make any other.
Hello
Hi!
Hey guys, I don't know if this is the right place to ask. I'm looking for spells that have a certain effect. And I want to know which spells would be closest to the chosen effect.
First Spell:
- Object is destroyed. Just falls apart. No big boom or sword or fire, just Destruction in itself.
Second Spell: - Person is freed of anything that is holding it (Tentacles, Vines, a grabbing person, maybe even chains or shackles?) I assume that would be some kind of cutting spell but i hope there is something closer that just releases someone
I don't think the first one exists, though Disintegrate is probably your closest bet.
As for the second, check out Freedom of Movement!
Unfortunately, neither are spells you have access to at early levels
Hi
I am new and trying to play and, i made a character, but cant start playing, i have no clue hehe

ah, thank you thank you! š
Well like most things i would say learn by playing, so gonna try find a game to play xd
The place to start is the Players Handbook or Basic Rules. If you just downloaded (somehow) supplementary materials they arent going to teach you how to start
Ok gonna read all about basic rules manual i downloaded, maybe not that easy as i thought, Ah well i got time, thx i will come here again after i read the complete basic rules manual
Well it was shorter then i thought, read the basic rules. It now says i am rdy to join a campaign. So ... Try to find a campaign now , hehe gl to me i guess
If you would like to find a game then I recommend looking at #750812887697588356 or looking around at local game stores (if you have them) or places like Reddit
Just made a topic there, hehe thx for advice
Np hope you find a great game
Hehhe thx i hope so to
Hey I was dumb and accidentally told you the wrong place, it is #750812887697588356 not players sorry again
Hehe yeah i saw it before i submitted, hehe no worries hehe xd xd xd
Yea sorry about that good catch
Anyone can teach me dnd and help me find a campaign
Probably not! But there's plenty of resources here to learn the basics yourself
That I can do today

Just so you're aware, finding a game for DnD isn't always the fastest thing. It's certainly not like an online game where you can sign up for matchmaking and get into a game immediately.
Depending on your circumstances, it could take days or even weeks!
If you want to find a game, try to look in #750812887697588356 local game stores, adventurers league or places like Reddit
Dosh bones put it extremely well, it can takes days or weeks to find a game for you to play, especially since there usually arenāt that many DMs. However in places like Adventurers league you can play pretty quickly if itās in your area
Itās more of an IRL issue if anything, trying to carve out 4 hours in a day for usually 5-6 people Is pretty hard
Yeah thats true for any activity
People have very different schedules so it can be quite difficult
Well I have to go see yall later hope I helped
Thx for the help
Newbie here to D&D!
I was wondering, how is it played? I have a few friends to play with, but I was wondering; is it like. Verbal role-play? (I have no other way of asking this š)
I know it's usually played IRL, but due to my friends being on the other side of the world, we've opted to play through discord ^_^
You can play it through voice chat, sure!
Usually people use a virtual table top, something like roll20 or foundry, that can handle the character sheet and maps aspect and let you roll dice with it
But you can even just play using ddb and a discord chat room if you wanted
Huh, haven't thought ab that!
:') I've always wanted to play & now that I'm actually doing it, I find myself quite overwhelmed with the sheer amount of things š„²
It is a lot but itās very fun once you get the hang of it
It is very fun!
I like making characters ^_^
Yeah same
As you play you'll pick up things and it won't be as overwhelming as you get more and more used to the system, don't worry about it š
You've started playing the most extensively documented and played TTRPG ever so there's plenty of good resources for absolutely everything
Lumffy
I really want to get back into dnd after my first and only experience was ruined by a rude dm, but I worry my timezone being European and scheduling being restricted to weekends sometime September due to school I won't find any
Also where can I set my roles? Idk why I'm only dungeon master
Hello all! Newcomer here! I have a question about a certain campaign me and a few friends are looking to run, the only problem is, we dont have an experienced DM yet. Is there an experienced DM that is knowledgeable on the anime Jujitsu Kaisen available to look over some ideas to see if it is feasible to play?
Check id:customize?
Oh thank you
That's a new discord feature for me
How did you link to that btw? Like what is it and where could I normally access it? Just curious
Made a sorcerer dragonborn human (uses dragonborn stats, levels, equipment etc, but looks human) with the knight background. Need help setting up the second page and figuring out feats and traits.
Feats are an optional ruleset, although widely popular and used
They are an option for you to take instead of an ability score improcement
It's above the channel breakdown, under where the Events are located. Upper left of the sidebar.
Oh it's right in front of me, I don't know how I missed it
Thank you
Whenever you reach a level in you class that gives an ASI, you may take a Feat instead
Feats give your character some added ability, and its a way to specialize or customize your character
Also, there are some backgrounds and races that give you a feat to at level 1
If you do not have any Feats you leave that section blank
Alright can you simplify this?
What do I write for a level 1 dragonborn sorcerer knight
knight as in the background dingus
Yes, that. And if you havent taken a feat , you dont have one. Leave it blank
Okay.
You dont want to speak like this, especially when asking for help
Each class has a hit die that determines the range of their HP. A fighter has a hit die of a d10, for example, so they either roll on each level up or take the average (5), plus CON modifier. At level 1, they have the maximum, so 10+whatever the CON modifier is.
Fair enough.
And for the feats and traits on the second page, also leave that blank?
If their CON modifer is +0, yes. Otherwise it's higher or lower.
Traits are different than feats, they refer to your characters description
A barbarian has a d12. Each class has this info in their class description: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/barbarian#ClassFeatures
There are 2 separate sections.
Feats and traits, on the first page.
Additional feats and traits, on the second page.
Actually
Hold on, i need to check something
are you talking about features and traits? there is a section on that page specifically for feats (which you can get as OptionZero stated).. but the features section is also filled with Class and Species feature information
Ok yeah
So page 1 has āFeatures and Traitsā
page 2 has āAdditional Features and traitsā. It is merely extra space for stuff that doesnt fir
At level 1? No. Each class get the maximum for their hit die at level 1. Your DM will inform you whether you should roll or take the average at level up. If you don't have a DM, it doesn't matter what you do because your character is essentially practice.
What page would standard feats be on then?
I was mistaken, when he said Feats i thought he meant something like PAM. The āFeatures and Traitsā sections actually are for more
you have Class Features and Racial traits. Those sections are for writing all of those down
IN ADDITION to specific feats you took
Is anyone open to talk to one on one, because everyone is being general and I need a specific thing to put down
So for example Fighter class, you would list level 1ās āFighting Style: whatverā, level 2ās Action surge, etc
And racial TRAITS are whatever special traits your race gives
To make it simple:
feats and traits section is where you write your Class Features, Racial Traits, any Feats you took
except for the variant human, no one starts with a feat unless a DM lets you.. but they would go in that section. Class and Racial Features are what you write in those other boxes.
Are you using the D&D beyond character generator or one of the downloadable character sheets you fill in by hand?
Downloadable character sheets filled in via pdf
Dnd beyond puts then at the bottom of Features and Traits but for the hand written form theres leeway for how the user wants to organize it since its just two blank boxss
if I have a dragonborn that just looks full blown human, would I write down the racial traits for a human since it'd be appearance?
ah, unless you need more room to write, you don't have to fill out that section.
Does your dragonborn have the racial abilities of the race in the books or the stats of a human?
On the top of p2 is a box for you to put the physical characteristics like height/weight
The racial Traits go in Features and Traits
All stats and everything are dragonborn. But he looks human. Height age and weight are the only difference from standard human appearance because dragonborns fully mature to 18 at 15 years old.
āļø
but which race would I write down for racial traits is the issue
so in that section you would put things about the dragonborn race which you can find in the books under the section "Dragonborn Traits" IE: Dragon Ancestry"
Alright and that goes by level, right?
If it is, in every sense but physical appearance, a Dragonborn, then it should get the traits from the dragonborn race.
and some racial traits improve, change or come online at later levels, yes
Alright could I get a list of what to write for level 1 dragon born racial traits?
I don't have the official player handbook so I've been relying on online things and I can't seem to find it
We cant reprint official materials in full here
Dragonborn are freely available as part of the Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/16-dragonborn
razorwing beat me to it š
Thank
Is draconic ancestry the only one for level 1? There's no levels listed on that page.
the breath weapon damage evolves over time (IE at certain levels).
Alright. Are there other traits I can get at level 1?
There are no additional dragonborn racial traits at other levels.
Alright so the only thing is draconic ancestry.
Player races tend to get all of their racial traits from the get go.
Alright and what would I write for sorcerer features?
Would this not be easier to do on dndbeyond with the basic rules?
The only thing that they may get at later levels are innate spellcasting
Don't have dndbeyond.
You can sign up to D&D Beyond for free.
I know.
Do you guys recommend dnd figures
Hey folks! I'm very interested in DnD but sadly I don't know anyone in real life that is interested in it neither is it particularly popular with people in my part of the world, I was wondering if someone here was in a similar situation as me and managed to find a group to play with, if there is then may I ask how you went about it? did you just start joining random groups until you found one you vibe with?
Bro goto your nearest game stop and ask I met so many friends that way
I play online and I have enough money-sinks as it is. Plus, you can use things like candies, coins, or whatever. Minis are cool, but they're not necessary.
For ability score increase, would that apply for at the start too, or just per level?
if you don't want to make a DDB account, you can download the basic rules from wotc: https://dnd.wizards.com/what-is-dnd/basic-rules
There are tons of ways to find online groups. You can use those tools to find people that lines up with your schedule, and some let you make a profile so that you find like-minded folks with similar play preferences.
For sorcerer class features at level 1, it'd include spellcasting and sorcerous origin right?
Here's a list of sites to use in your search: #third-party-tools-archive message
ability scores are adjusted when the character is first created based off of any adjustments the race provides +2 or +1 to this or that ability. It will tell you everything in the rules. Afterwards, at 4th, 8th, 12th, etc there is what is called an Ability Score Increase opportunity where you may choose to boost one ability by +2 or two abilities by +1... alternatively, some DMs allow folks to pick feats instead.
You can find the rules for sorcerers here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/sorcerer
apologies for the trouble, and thank you!
The table lists their first level features
No trouble. Hopefully you find folks!
hey guys ive been playing dnd with my family and in the 1st encounter we ve run into a problem. What exactly does armor class do and can cantrips be cast infinitely?
AC is the number your roll needs to total (with bonuses included) in order to hit. You don't run out of cantrips, but you generally can only cast one per turn.
Armor class determines how much you would have to roll on the d20 to actually hit the monster
so if lets say my AC is 15 and monster rolls 14 then he doesnt hit me?
Yep. It needs to meet or exceed that number.
Yes
Armor Class is the number an enemy creature has to achieve before they can "hit"/affect the hit points of a player. It's like a numerical representation of the cumulative affects of one's armor and their ability to swiftly avoid strikes.
Cantrips don't consume a spell slot (of which there are a numbered limit per rest). You can typically cast one cantrip a round (as most of them are actions)
He doesn't hit you
Me personally I don't use bonuses when I'm playing DND as a DM but you can still use it
ok thanks, and initiative? i know that if i attack from stealth i have it, but how do i calculate it at the start of the encounter?
You roll a d20 and add your initiative bonus. That determines your order in the combat. It's not a thing you have or don't have.
This happens at the start of combat.
initiative is what determines the order players and creatures will go in a round of combat. it is based off the Dexterity modifier of the creature.. so roll a d20 plus the initiative number..
Greetings adventurers! I'm trying to add the magic initiate feat to my lvl 2 wizard but the DNDBeyond character sheet interface doesn't show any feats available. I'm new to playing so I may have missed something.
Do you own the feat or the book it's published in digitally?
I have access to the player's handbook in DNDbeyond
Head over to #ddb-support. They'll get you sorted.
how do i tell what my passive perception is? what stat does it deviate from?
It's 8+WIS bonus(+proficiency bonus if you are proficient in Perception).
thank you
Is it normal for me not to use bonuses?
Because I heard you can make little changes to your game
You wonāt be able to add a feat at lvl 2 on dndbeyond you need to be lvl 4
Would I get a feature or trait from a background or no
Some give you something
Would knight background give anything?
Whatās it say
I don't know. I don't have access to the player handbook
if a character doesnt have armor does it have 0 AC? and what does setting a creature on fire mean?
ty
Giving out none basic rule info is against TOS if it not in the basic rules you have to buy it
And what would I write down for a character's treasure
Extra equipment stuff you find whilst questing
So nothing until I start playing pretty much
You're starting your adventuring career. You start with just the starting equipment. You write down "treasure" when you find treasure during your adventures.
Listening to real-play podcasts is not only engaging but I also learn a ton from them
what exactly do "Hit Dice" mean? my book says that fighter has 1d10 per fighter lvl but i dont get it
Itās used to calculate your max HP, and to recover health during a short rest.
but arent hit points HP? it says 10 + constitution modifier on hit points
Have you at least downloaded the basic rules?

What do you mean by this
Heya guys
often a character's class or background might give them starting money (ie gold).. so you could put it there. Not every space on the character sheet needs to be filled in at first. it's meant to grow with the character and provide space for things you encounter while playing. š
Guys can y'all give me some tips and tricks for being a dungeon master for the first time?
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isnāt competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Thereās some good general advice here. āļø
Is there anything specific youāre curious about, though?
If your not sure about something just decide what works in the moment and look up the ruling after, the game will flow much better. Just make sure everyone knows the ruling going forward at the start of the next session.
Depending on the game you're trying to run, its absolutely okay to make puzzles without having a solution in mind and listen to what the players theories on how to solve it are and have that be a possible answer.
Make sure YOU are having fun as well.
Try to include elements from player backstory in your main story, try to weave them all, like the roots of the tree reaching its trunk, then based on the decisions of the party, out of the trunk onto branches.
Don't worry about it too much, people are happy enough to just come together and hang out, your game will be fun as long as you try.
Would joke names for characters be fine?
Depends on how funny it is, whacha got?
I got TouchMyEars, GermyWormy, VacuumTwister, Brittle Brat, Generic Blacksmith
Whats the character?
Wdym?
Think about whether you or your table is going to find that amusing, and whether you want that as a name for a campaign
Do you mean their backstories or something?
Those are all a bit rather silly but if you and your table enjoys it, all power to you
Iām in a campaign with one of our members named Damwell Betterbee and I thought that was a pretty great joke name
I will keep that in mind
Like brittle brat works for a low con warforge wizard, thats pretty funny, but it really depends on what the character is ya know?
Ah I see!
Its like being an 8 foot goliath barbarian called tiny
running a homebrew campaign for the first time, i have a setting and some rough plot hooks (i have 10 days to figure stuff out it'll be fiiiine), the only thing ive run before was a lost mine of phandelver campaign that died out after the first session so im definitely a newbie to this. any general tips?
Definitely pick the brains of folks in #dm-discussion but my best DM advice is to focus on fun. If you make sure everyone at the table, including you, is having good, safe, fun - you're a good DM.
Doesn't matter if you forget rules or if the main plot goes off the rails... as long as everyone is having fun.
Talking to me?
You can play dnd over discord yes
Not looking for a game right now maybe tmr

Yes
Have a look at that bot post it has some useful links
Ok
No that was a bot command not a question
Thx
Sorry
Concentration is a resource that certain spells require.
Certain spells with a duration of longer than one turn will specifically say they require concentration
When concentration on such a spell, that spell will end if you cast a different concentration spell, so you cannot concentrate on more than one such spell at a time. Non concentration spels are fine tho
When concentrating on a spell, and you take damage, you need to roll a āconcentration checkā every time you take damage
It should work. Give it a try?
New here uh edited
This is a dnd discussion discord
i got confused by this popup at the bottom of the chat entry, sorry
absolutely interested in dnd discussion
Welcome! This channel is specifically for new-to-D&D folks to ask questions and get started with D&D. We have some useful reosurces linked to in the pinned messages.
i am especially new
is there a resource related to DM creating scenarios and things like that?
not so much world creating
#dm-discussion and #dm-world-building cover a lot of that ground
i just literally don't have a background in D&D in-game events
should i ask in dm discussion?
What would I do about having my character having a pet raven?
Would it be a familiar, or just an NPC, or what?
Well let's figure out what exactly you want to discuss here - are you interested in D&D lore?
Do you prefer to make your own lore and settings?
You can work with yout DM to decide if pets are allowed and what the mechanics would be for that. Usually if the pet is going to be involved in combat it would take on the stats/mechanics of a familiar or similar.
Don't want it in combat. So I guess it'd just be an NPC then?
If I were your DM, I'd just use the basic raven monster statblock.
Alright fair enough.
is the lore wiki good enough or should i be reading something?
Ah okay. How much do you know about D&D settings? There's several of them but one of the more famous ones is called Faerun. You can get a feel for that setting and it's lore here: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Forgotten_Realms
Well actually the setting is called the forgotten realms - Faerun is just the most used area of it.
i am familiar with Forgotten Realms but I don't know this Faerun
Faerun is a continent in the forgotten realms
Anyway start with that wiki and its resources and then for further lore discussion and questions, use the #dnd-lore channel.
hello
Hello you need help
Can you give yourself advantage after the roll for samurais fighting spirit? So if you miss it you can go again?
Nope
You use fighting spirit at the start of your turn to give yourself advantage on all future attack rolls that turn
I want to create a character entirely based off outsmarting the enemy with MacGyverd traps made from kit tooks like rope and hammers, what 5e class would be able to support my ideas for this character? I am open to suggestions from the handbook, Tashas Couldron, or Xanathars guide
Preferably this character uses a bow or some sort of ranged weapon
artificer can give alot of tool proficiencies but many items for mechanical manipulation like you are thinking were not developed well and leave alot to DM discretion
Additionally, as enemies become stronger theyll have access to magic or special abilities that quickly outplace what you can Mcguyver
I have a question about my first build and want to know if how it'll work
There is an Artificer class that combines spelllcasting with mechanical features that you may find meets some of your ideas
It is not free and it is challenging for a new player, beware
The artificer can support this idea
My idea is to use a rogue and multiclass into fighter 3 echo knight to effectively opportunity attack and be in two places at once. Would that work?
Nice, also would the throwing +2 damage on thrown attack work well with psychic blades? (Fighting style)
Would you be referencing the Artillerist?
artificer is the class. Artillerist is one subclass. The others are Battle Smith, Alchemist, and Armorer
I was referring to the artificer class generally. Which of the subclasses you like is up to you
Ok, thank you
Sure
One last question, would there be any suggestion on when I subclass?
Do I go 1 rogue into 3 fighter or 3/4 rogue into 3 fighter?
Btw you are using āsubclassā instead of āmulticlassā
My bad
I meant multiclass
A subclass is something different. It is the specialized path for each class that you get either lv 1-3
Fighter first becuase extra attack
Although, why so you even need rogue
It's fun
I wanted the echo knight teleport
Also I thought that +2 damage on the extra psychic blade throw would be good
Yeah
Be advised the soulknife blades do not work on opportunity attacks
My plan was to hold a normal blade in one hand and just use the soul knife as an extra attack mostly
Unless I can't opportunity in a location than just shoot both knives
uhhh hello! sorry for bothing you all.. i just got here and i wanted to join in the fun! i got most my stuff ready.. but i wanted join a campaign!
Also your non-psychic blade should be a finesse weapon if you want to get sneak attack on an opportunity attack
I can't use a one hand sword or do I need a dual weild trait or something?
the blade does not manifest on an opp attack
The psychic blade feature specifically says the bonus action attack is a blade that manifests in your other hand, if it is free
If you are holding a second weapon it means your hand is not free
I was planning on holding 1 weapon
Thats why iām saying holding a weapon precludes you from using the bonus action psychic blade attack
Ohh holding any weapon does sadge
Read the feature carefully
First blade manifests in one hand when u take the Attack action
Second blade manifests for a bonus action attack, in your OTHER hand, if it is free (which it is not)
ok
I'll try something else probably then
anyone interested in helping me homebrew my first dnd character? dm me š„²
I wouldnāt start with homebrew material
Homebrew is intentionally a topic beyond the scope of this channel because it's not recommended for first timers
super reasonable, but it's still something im interested in š
If you want to discuss homebrew, please use #homebrew
But just to clarify, what do you mean when you say "homebrew my first dnd character" exactly?
Usually someone would say "make homebrew for my first D&D character"
What kind of character are you trying to make maybe one of the existing races class will fit better than some homebrew shenanigans
no yeah im using a human warlock
its just im āmaking a homebrewā (lmao) for the pact. trying to kind of flavorize the spells with tarot reading and the major and minor arcana
What do you think 'homebrew' means? Because there might be a misunderstanding that could lead to you getting redirected to the wrong channel
so my understanding is āhomebrewā is, for example, creating a custom spell for your character rather than using hex
That's a question for #character-discussion, not really the newcomer channel
Okay
Yeah, it's making new mechanical options for the game
As started, really not recommended for newcomers as to be able to make stuff that works well in the game you need an understanding of the game
But if that's what you want to do, #homebrew would be the place to ask
They have a point. You can always have ideas going into the future of homebrew style games with that. But most often times as a dnd newcomer, making abilities that are of ur own design are not the best to do early on. Mostly due to mechanical or scaling difficulties imo
what about for super short term playthroughs?
U must mean a one shot
Those are usually ok to test functions or ideas for settings and gametypes. But theory crafting in homebrew, it can work. But did u want to flavorize the character background or flavor a spell when being cast?
Or make a whole new spell altogether? Cus that would be more of what a homebrew generally is. The other two things are just details of character design moreso
A homebrew is changing how the game is played at its gameplay level. I wouldn't call it a homebrew if you say use reduce/enlarge magic and just call it pimm tech (how antman gets smaller or bigger).
Pretty much yes. Lets say you are trying to summon a demon, im not familiar with warlock but lets just say that it was an inherent ability already with warlocks. If you wanted to detail summoning it using a said tarot card set, it wouldnt be making a new spell really. Although i could find there being issues of the medium ur using, the idea of using the tarot cards or such incantations is more fluff than it is changing the way the game is actually played.
There's an expression in D&D which is "flavour is free"
What that means is "Anything that changes only the description of the rules and not the rules themselves is generally something that is permitted in most cases and not considered homebrew or generally in need of approval"
Note, there are exceptions as they pertain to flavour that for example, doesn't make sense (such as flavouring an attack that cuts off a limb every time it hits) or doesn't fit the game world (flavouring a spell as looking like a dinosaur in a setting where dinosaurs don't exist)
Sorry to bother and interrupt š can i ask what exactly are these homebrew things, are they like another/specific world or something in DnD?
Example. Theres a weapon in game called a Sickle. And if you read the description of monk when picking weapons for them, it gives example of flavored text that change the identity of the weapon but not its functionality within the game
Homebrew is content developed by players and DMs, outside of Wizards of the Coast
And what is wizards of the coastā¦.
They are the company that works on DnD
The developer of DnD
A homebrew isnt usually just a spell of character either. Its usually a whole recreation of concept of the dungeon masters design. Such as wanting to play in JoJoās Bizarre Adventure, the universe and skills and abilities get tailored separate from how dnd operates.
Ive been in two homebrews, and both have mild complications due to scaling, difficulty, or functionality. It takes work to make it work, really. That is why its not advised for new players to attempt homebrews early on until they understand some of the ruleset design and such of the actual style of game
Basically homebrew to DnD is like what mods are to videogames
That's an apt description of a Homebrew setting, but it's important for newcomers to know that people say "homebrew" to refer to anything that is outside of the WotC published material, even if it's just a single rule change that isn't listed as an optional variant.
Yeah, we actually have separate channels due to the distinction
- Homebrew settings get discussed in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building
- Homebrew rules, items, and features get discussed in #homebrew
This is because homebrew itself possesses a very broad definition like Jale mentioned
Anybody wanna help me come up with a good story? Iām a first time DM š
You might be best off picking up an existing adventure and giving it a read-through first.
Maybe try in the #dm-discussion channel though?
Absolutely, ping me or dm if you need help

But if you have any specific questions, ask away!
Do people have persistent worlds in this game? I'm curious about building structures long term, like houses, mage towers, etc.
Maybe this is covered in the player handbook or DM guide?
What do you mean by persistent? As in exist between sessions or exist between campaigns?
The answer is yes to both, both are possible
I guess I mean like a campaign. Long term
Are there guidelines to this in the player handbook?
It will depend on the DM, but it's usually assumed that they will try to simulate a world that "exists" with as much persistence as the real one.
World-building is covered in the Dungeon Masterās Guide, not the Playerās Handbook since players typically donāt need to concern themselves with those elements. (Whether the DMG does the job well is up for debate.)
ok, thanks
Hey guys! Does anyone have recommendations for starter items for me to take to college for DND?
I already dice.
As a player, you are already off to a good start there
A copy of the Players Handbook is also always a good idea, though a new version will be coming out next year, so you might not want to invest in that just yet.
You can also get by with just the Basic Rules, which are free. (Frankly, I think you can pick up the current PHB if you really want, as I don't believe everyone will just flock to next year's edition.) But if you haven't played before, you don't need to invest in anything just yet.
The contents of the current PHB should be compatible with the revised edition as well.
Okay, perfect! Because I'll be at college for 4 years.
Also.... what dice trays do you recommend? I am hard of hearing, wearing hearing aids and the rolling of dice on tables irks me.
I... apologize if that too muc info... but it's the truth.
I don't use one, I'm a VTT DM (online platforms). I think if I did need one, I would get a portable one - they usually have poppers in the corner so it can fold flat.
Yeah, I've seen those! Also, I'm going see about 3D printing my Orc OC, Moggatorash. š I'm almost done with creating him in blender.
I have one of those foldables; the lining does a fair job of muting some of the noise. Just a quick Google reveals there are even more options for quieter rolling.
Alright, awesome! So... what player handbook do you recommend for me to get until the new one gets released?
The fifth edition Player's Handbook. This one: https://dnd.wizards.com/products/rpg_playershandbook
It's the kind of thing t discuss with your group at Session 0 as well.
Ah... okay.
These days dice trays and dice are available in materials known to humanity. You want a soft one like cloth or leather , itāll save your dice from damage too
Hello, I'm practically discovered D&D this summer, and I am currently working on a character and a backstory for him. As I was working on the character's backstory, I had him pray to a god in a time of need and a phoenix showed up and killed his would-be murderers. Then I thought, would that even work? Sooooooo, my question is: is it possible / plausible for a god to summon an elemental?
Short answer: sure, in practice the gods can do whatever the story needs. But every table has its own lore because every gm runs things their way with their lore
For YOUR purposes though, i would keep it about that vague, because you dont want a backstory so rigid a DM cant integrate it into their world
And even more to the point, the god and the elementa stuff doesnt matter. You dont play your backstory. Your backstory is there only to serve your character going forward.
Why is your character going on an adventure? What are short and long term goals? Personality? Flaws?
U dont need a novel. And personally iād say shorter is better.
Ah, understood! That is very helpful, thanks. I will delete the unnecessary fanfiction. š
That I spent hours on ... š
Donāt delete it all Change it up a bit, the god didnāt summon an elemental they provided you with the slight power to defeat your foes, you donāt want to be more powerful in your backstory than what a lvl 1 character can be
Got it, thanks!
What class you playing?
Fighter, with a soldier background
Then prey to tempus torm or tyr to give you the strength to fight of your foes https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-b-gods-of-the-multiverse
I was thinking more along the lines of Helm, but those are excellent suggestions, and I probably will change my god.
Oh Helms a nice choice too fits with protecting you in your hour of need
Yeah don't walk any of that back. Your character was saved from murder by a phoenix sent from your deity, or at least that's his story. You might find out somewhere down the line what you thought was a phoenix was just a beneficent wizard casting a spell-shaped fireball š
Or a million other possibilities.
Oooooh, intriguing!
Another question: do most of the D&D games set in the Forgotten Realms / Faerun or do they just take place will-nilly?
Most of the official 5e adventures take place in the Forgotten Realms, but plenty of folks use other recognized settings like Eberron. Lots more make their own. It's hard to generalize, really.
The early editions took place in campaign settings such as Greyhawk and Mystara. It was only around 3E that the Forgotten Realms became the official "default" campaign setting.
So I am going to see if I can 3D print my orc shaman I modeled in blender.
Hmph, wow, I really don't know anything ... here I am, ruthlessly researching Faerun and where my character could be from and everything ... now I realize that it may not even be relevant. Oh well
Ask your DM which setting they're using (official or homebrew).
Gotta find a group first, but I will certainly remember to ask that question. š
im new and i wanna learn how to play (iev alr made a character sheet

What's the best spell casting class for newcomers?
How would making a homebrew go about? Like, what would I use to do that? I don't feel like using DND Beyond
Also how does someone write homebrew.
I'd say cleric, paladin, or ranger (in that order). They're all pretty hardy, and clerics/paladins can swap their spells on a long rest, so you're not stuck with choices you dislike. The ranger spell list is pretty small, so it's not an overwhelming array of choices. Plus, any of them can typically resort to melee fairly easily.
You might also look into the eldritch knight fighter or arcane trickster rogue subclasses.
Ill go off the deep end and just say wizard. Forces you into sink or swim, learn to use those spells and use them wisely, or die.
Clerics are awesome too. Full casters with a huge variety of subclasses, and plenty of non-casting versatility.
hello
Hard disagree as vehemently as possible
Handing a new player the biggest possible spell list, plus the mechanics of learning spells, on top of the basic rules is like the quickest way to leave a new player confused and discouraged
Eh I'm a weird one I guess. Reading spell lists and descriptions got me more engrossed. Taking spells one level at a time simplifies the "biggest spell list" issue.
But most spells alter game mechanics anyway, made me think of unique solutions to problems
We get āwhat is a cantripā here basically everybday
U want to hand them the wizard list?
Yeah man!
Sorry, i would like players to be able to pick up and play as soon as possible
Ok! That's cool too.
It may have worked for you, but objectivelyā¦.no one can say its the actual best class to start with, or even the best spellcasting class to start with to learn how it works
I started with a rogue, cuz I was advised to stay away from wizards at first. Then I played a wizard.
So, I tend not to agree with the overwhelming sentiment that wizards aren't for newbies.
Ok, weāre not going to ageee. But i wonāt clog this channel.
It's all good. No wrong or right answer eh? Just giving an alternative viewpoint.

dude so much to read
i chose human and then in classes every class has many spells
what is a good easy class?
Fighter or barbarian
humans are good at that right
Any race can be good at anything
guys im reading a bit on attack rolls and it says that "Some spells require an attack roll. The ability modifier used for sspell attack depends on the spellcasting ability of the spellcaster." but i cant find additional info as in what should i take into consideration in such roll
Any spellcasting class will tell you what your spellcasting ability is
For example, for wizards it's intelligence
8+proficiency+modifier (int/wis/cha)
ah thanks i was looking in the wrong place
As much as you want? If just "studying" is overwhelming, playing might be a better way for you to learn.
people will play iwith me if i dont know anything?
You'll probably want to grasp basics of movement or combat, but there's not really a good way to "study" the skills you can hone for RPing or exploration or social interaction.
what happens if i ,lets say, get hit by a mace? can i roll a saving throw for that? is there any way to reduce the taken dmg?
You have all the time in the world before you decide to jump into a game, so you can take it slow
The "saving throw" for not getting hit by a mace is rolled into your AC
ty dude
Attack rolls are made against AC to determine a hit or a miss, there's no saving throw
oh okay, i ask because i was playing a premade adventure and my group was pretty much 1shotted if the hit went past AC
Attack roll: The attacker rolls to see if they can beat the defenders armor class. If they do, they inflict damage
Saving throw: The defender rolls to see if they can evade the attacks effect, rolling against the saving throw difficulty class. If they do, they avoid some or all of the damage
AC is a combination of the effects of your armor to absorb a hit, and your ability to get out of the way of a hit
That's pretty brutal. It can be more common at low lvls, 1-2, but if your party is above that, the DM may need to scale back the challenges.
i mean it was the "Dragon of the Icespire Peak" adventure and when we fought on 1st quest our tank barely survived
even tho the quest is set for 1st levels
We do ask people don't discuss specific parts of adventures (aka spoilers) outside of #1029833015423143957
sorry
s'all good, just letting you know
The "beauty" of DND combat is characters are equally effective at 1hp as at 100hp
so its normal?
Yeah, getting very low on HP, getting knocked unconscious, even character death is not uncommon at lvl 1.
hit points are an abstraction of lots of things, not just your physical condition
Being at 1/100 hit points doesn't mean you're 99% dead
HP represents physical condition, willpower, stamina, focus, luck, and pure narrative force
thanks a lot

Yes thank you so much
can someone give me an example of "Reaction" action in combat?
An opportunity attack; a special attack you make as a reaction when a creature you can see attempts to move out of your reach
Reactions aren't an action though
In my book it says that on my turn i can move and take one action with reaction listed as one of them
Which book is that?
Essentials kit Rulebook
"Certain special abilities, spells, and situations allow you to take a special action called a reaction"
Does anyone know about Dragonology????
Right. So there are a few similarly named, but distinct, types of actions you can take. There is your "Action", your "Bonus Action" and your "Reaction". Movement could be considered a 4th type of action. Those 3 types of actions all have unique situations which they can be used. A "bonus action" isn't just an extra "Action". And a "Reaction" has to be used on someone else's turn.
mhm and i assume monsters can use opportunity attack?
Yes.
Ah, this is a little bit of a confusing quirk of the rules; when they say a special action, they don't mean a capital A Action
The reason this matters is because things that can stop you taking Actions don't stop you taking reactions automatically, unless they say so
However anything that stops you taking an Action also stops you from taking a Bonus Action
That's why the distinction matters
The next most common use of a Reaction I think would be executing a Readied Action
Hey everyone - not new to DnD per se (played in high school but that was a loooong time ago). Been getting back into it the last year or so.

Hello! I've been interested in D&D for a while and I finally went and made a character. I read the new player guide on D&D Beyond and I think I understand most of it but just because I think i do might not translate to actually knowing when playing the game and there were like 15 different pages with explanations for a bunch of stuff so I'm bound to forget some of it. What are some things that new players might make a mistake on? Like some things in the guide was a bit ambiguous on the wording or was a bit confusing
Something easy for new players to mistake is to focus too much on the rules, and not on their character. The rules only exist to create a guideline for what is possible.
If you can imagine your character doing something, you should just do it, regardless of whether there are specific rules that outline how that action can be done
True cause I know some people who kinda bend the rules to make it more fun and stuff
but I was talking about like things like inspiration how does that work?
If you do something the DM thought was cool or suboptimal for the sake of roleplay, the DM can award āØInspirationāØ
You can expend this Inspiration to gain advantage on any roll of the d20
It is entirely DM dependant on whether it gets used or not, so certainly not something to get bogged down in
kk
Sometimes new players get hung up on trying to memorize information rather than knowing where to look (on the character sheet, in the book, etc.). I think the latter tends to serve better long-term.
ok
I also think there are problematic behaviors new players can fall prey to, but that doesn't seem to be what you're asking about.
Nah I wasn't going to ask that but now I'm curious
I feel like I should probably watch out for stuff like that now
make sure you find a dm that supports the way you want to play dnd
I can see how it could be problamatic to have a dm that doesn't really support the way you play
These sorts of things aren't exclusive to new players, but they may not realize:
- It's a group game, so pay attention to other players' stories. You are not the main character alone; you're all the main character.
- That also means being careful to not let your fun step on anyone else's. Read the room. Be cooperative, not combative (unless you have explicit consent). Don't hog the spotlight all the time. Try to give others room to shine.
- It's not a video game; don't try to beat the DM.
Those are some that come to mind.
I mean it just wouldn't be enjoyable I feel like it would be kinda restricting
kk
I'll try to keep that in mind
yeah a lot of new players can fall off after if they meet a bad dm or a dm that doesnt have a play style they enjoy
all dms are different so yeah
True
my first dm was my cousin so i lucked out in that department but if i had a bad one i probably wouldnt have continued to play
but im about to dm my first campaign so im terrified lol
what are some items i should leave in chests or places for my lv 4 characters to loot (new dm)
Doing anything for the first time is scary, but if you're playing with friends who are there to have fun, it'll be fine.
Whatever would logically be there. Tombs will have plenty of loot and items since they belong to the dead. Goblins will just scatter things unless they are leb by some kind of boss. Kobolds will give their stuff to a dragon or if they have no overlord they will carry loot. Ect
Beyond that just think on why someone would lock something in a chest and for how long. Or if they are still alive or unable to access it.
It's up to you.
Alright thanks!
Depends on how they like to play. But consumable items like scrolls or potions can always be fun loot in place of just gold.
Imagine having friends lol
im trying to post in the looking for dm chat but it doesnt seem to be letting me. ive looked in the find a game chat but theres no info i can see
You've read the "How do I post?" info in that channel?
Where is general
General what
I assume you're referring to either #dnd-discussion or #non-dnd-topics

As to how to put it all together - the first chapter from the free basic rules explains the step by step process: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
hi im making a homebrew world and im a newbie dm and im wondering what information do my players need to know about the world in order to create their characters
Well for the 2nd part of your question focus on what game mechanics you'll follow in your game - and the use that to decide what races are allowed or not.
For instance maybe your world doesn't have dragonborn for whatever reason. Best to let your players know that for game reasons that you won't allow dragonborn in the game. For the other part of your question, you may get some good suggestions and ideas from #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building. I'd also add one other thought - try and avoid limiting character choices unless you really havea good reason for it. It can be a lot of fun for players to create and play characters and limiting options can feel bad.
tysm! i am gonna give my players some freedom which i can weave into my homebrew because it will be months before the game is actually finished but for my first session its just a beta

Hey everyone!
Hi
hi
Do you roleplay your stats? Like if you have a low int should you not come up with a brilliant plan?
You may not have book smarts, but wisdom and experience can make up for that
But if you are playing a character who is a new adventurer and have low wisdom too?
Depend on your background, donāt forget a lvl1 character didnt just pop into existence they had a life and experiences before the campaign
Lvl1 is still pretty powerful compared to a commoner
Even a lvl 1 wizard will probably have twice the health of a commoner and be able to one shot a commoner as well
Welcome

Alright.
Hi, Iām pretty new to dnd and was wondering if I can get some help regarding my character?
Basically her parents left her an instrument. I want something to make it special so maybe it has some elven magic in it or something because she is half elf. I was wondering if that is even possible
You could play a bard as they use instruments to cast spells
Thatās what I want to do
Then go play your magic flute and enjoy š

Cheers mate! Sorry for the late reply š I got caught up in something
yo im doing my first campaign as a ranger and ive gotten level 2 and i dunno how level casting works and ive tried to read the rules. Can someone explain to me how it works
You learn 2 first lvl spells from the ranger spell list and you have 2 spell slots so basically you can cast a spell 2 times, spells slots are like magic ammo
can i replace the spells later on
You learn more spells as you lvl up and everytme you level you can replace ONE spell you know with a new one
For example if you knew healing word and good berry at lvl 2 you could at lvl 3 learn a new spell like hunter mark and replace good berry with zephyr strike
do i have to do smth in game to get spells or do i just tell my DM i want to get a certain spell
You select them when you lvl up if your using dndbeyond once you lvl up you should have access to new stuff on the spells tab
thank you for all the help and do you reccomend any 2 spells for me
Hunters mark and good berry are nice options to start with
do monsters roll for a save when targeted by a spell from a player?
If the spell calls for a save yes
hi, im new and was wondering where and if i could get help on makng a character?
i have one in mind but dont exactly know how to make it
Whatās your idea?
its basicaly a living suit or armour thats possesed by a spirit
sorry for the late reply i had to go do somethoing butdo i get better animal taming spells later because i was siding more on that?
IF you went beast master at lvl 3 you get a summonable pet to aid you
thanks
Warforged race, reborn lineage, Autognome, or custome lineage all could work for that concept
thank you, good to know
They can take what ever form you want they get a set of stat based on if they are land water or air based
that sounds rlly cool and im starting to get rlly excited that i chose ranger
thx for the help
im on the dnd beyond character builder and dont see the warfoged race on it.
where can i choose it?
If you have not already you must own ebberon on this website
You can buy the raceās individually if you scroll down
Itās not a free race but you can buy individual races for 1.99 is you go through the website market place
oh
If you look at drakewarden you can get a drake companion the you can eventually ride on
Drakewarden?
Itās a ranger subclass but not in the free rules
Iām not interested in subclasses I donāt wanna make my first campaign too confusing
Every class will have a subclass by at the latest Level 3.
But of course there is at least one subclass for each class in the Basic Rules
Oh I thought it was an optional thing
So you guys suggest I take drakewarden for my subclass
I'd recommend if you are starting at Level 1, have an idea, but talk to your DM about what they would recommend, and what they have available.
The subclass in the Basic Rules is Hunter, and it's a perfectly serviceable subclass. If you want a pet, then the DM will almsot certainly have the beastmaster available. If they have the right book for drakewarden, or you are really drawn to that concept, then that's an option. But you won't need to decide now.
Alr thanks for the help
Hello
Hello! Need help with anything?
Hi! I dont believe you can help fix the website for me can you? Haha I think the character sheets page is down but I've seen some others are also having issues today so.
D&DBeyond?
Yeah I personally don't use D&DBeyond so the best thing I can say is if it is on your end then try restarting your device.
Pen and paper it is
The Wizards of the Coast Fillable PDF also works! (And what I use but I know it's not popular)
Oh thank you
Im just trying to decide how I wanna build this new character. I haven't played D&D for roughly 9 years
Damn, that's way over half my life, lol. If you have any other questions though here is the place to ask!
Thank you. I know I want a rogue but i haven't worked out the details yet
Do you have a concept for the character are they based on someone from popular media
For PHB classes all the details are free on D&DBeyond, my best recommendations for races are probably something on the shorter side (Gnome specifically) or Human.
I don't have alot of experience playing Rogue, I normally go for spellcasters.
That's not accurate
The Player's Handbook is not free on D&D Beyond (nor legitimately free anywhere)
The Basic Rules are free on D&D Beyond and contain most, but not all, of the content found in the Player's Handbook
Do you have a Player's Handbook with you?
The Basic Rules contains the 12 PHB base classes, one subclass each, all the base races and one subclass per race that requires them, one feat and most of the spells
Why do you ask?
Not you, sorry the person asking the questions.
I do not
But soon, as I do some research
I thought I would atleast join this discord with open mind
Again, any questions just ask here.
So... is there a premade campaign that you guys would recommend for first timers?
Like I'm LOVING how 5e is depicted in BG3 but I've NEVER played Tabletop
One of the starter sets. Lost Mines of Phandelver is the oldest, but is free on D&D Beyond. Dragon of IceSpire peak is part of the Essentials kit. Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is the newest one.
The sound like potential oneshot campaigns too
Do campaigns connect storywise potentially?
Cause I'm like, super spoiled from One Piece and needing my long term investment/storylines lol
Kind of why I love longer video games
One campaign for each saga that kinda thing lol
They usually are standalone. Most of the official published adventures take place in the Forgotten Realms setting, but with minimal crossover between them
Usually, at least to some degree. Baldur's Gate 3 is like a single large campaign. A one-shot would be more like a single main story quest within it.
True, pre-written modules usally dont' connect to one another, though a savvy DM can easily string a few non-contradictory ones together.
Waterdeep Dragon Heist (level 1-5) connects nicely into Dungeon of the Mad Mage (level 5-20).
Okay so some are only higher levels as if you're taking on rank bounties from hunt boards
Maskes sense, don't need to reset a character to a lower level that you've already worked with
It's also relatively easy for a DM to change the level for the campaign. it's more work, but it can be worth it. I am running Waterdeep Dragonheist as a 5-10 campaign instead of 1-5.
Your DM generally decides what kind of game they want to run - one shots, adventures, campaigns, etc.
Should they be custom or alter something premade for your group
Up to the DM really.
Even with something premade, it's usual that they will alter elements to fit the group.
For example, there might be factions with side-missions. If there's a faction that doesn't fit any character, but the side-mission is cool, maybe they will swap it around so you get to play that mission.
Hey! Iāve played D&D once and I wanna play again but idk people irl who would play with me. How can I play online with others??
Beyond is the online portal right?
Or just adapt the faction NPC. For example, there's a representative of a law-abiding government organisation who gives some missions. But most of my party aren't that straight-laced, and those that are aligned more with less government-sided groups. So I made the law-abiding agent into a bit of a loose cannon who is arranging extrajudicial assassinations and intimidation to make justice easier to carry out.
Is there a recruitment channel?
?looking
Here's a guide to getting started with online play. When you look for games in #find-a-game you want to look for games using a VTT (Virtual table top) like Roll20 or Foundry: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
thank you so much!
Beyond is a set of online tools, and a lot of people will use it when playing online or in person, but it doesn't (yet) have a virtual tabletop, so it isn't a full system for play. At the very least you will need a means to communicate with others, and a lot of groups that play online will use some sort of Virtual Tabletop
Imagine if BG3 eventually would let you use it's maps for custom campaigns? Virtual medium and all that lol
D&D are developing their own 3D Virtual Tabletop right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RiRoslMaa0&ab_channel=Dungeons%26Dragons
Ah sick!
Im new here
Welcome!
Is there a guide on how to play dnd i was bored and i saw dnd on youtube shorts and im interested but i have no friends to play with so i am here on discord

a monsters block has written on its attack "Melee weapon attack: +6 to hit" does it mean that on the attack roll you add 6 to the outcome?
Check out the links int eh bot post, particularly the rules and the handbooker helper
Precisely. If you break it down, it will be because of the ability score (like strength) and proficiency bonus
thank you
I'm playing a Shar Cleric in a new campaign and I'm trying to get some information on what perspective my character should have on other deities based upon his own worship? I know that Selune is the clear and primary enemy of Shar, but I'm not sure how I should react to others. I also know that Mystra's a big thing with the shadow weave.
ok so im kinda confused. i keep on hearing about a fey, and i have no idea what it is. what is it ?
Fey are a type of creature
Faries, nymphs, hags, sprites
They're creatures that hail from the feywild
Might be worth asking the same in #dnd-lore or #character-discussion - it's a fine beginner question, but people there might have more suggestions.
Shar is an "evil" goddess, in a similar vein as Bane, Cyric, Myrkul and Bhaal. As such, most other deities will oppose her. You should think about what your character would even tell others about their worship, as it might be bad if certain people find out. Think: would you check "Satanist" on a job application?
Also, think about how your character justifies acts that others call evil. Are they just arrogant? Do they think it serves some greater good? Are they just not bothered about pedestrian concepts like Morality?
Sorry, I completely missed the dnd-lore channel, I'll ask there.
Im so confused, but i want to play dnd so bad
What is confusing you? We may be able to help
hello guys
Ahoy!
i need some help cause i have no skills no knowledge of D&D but its sounds cool and like something i wanna get into itbut i need some help

@umbral shore check out the links in this post, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask them here
you might want to start with the Handbooker Helper before the Basic Rules, and you don't need to read the whole of the basic rules, as a lot is monster descriptions or for the DM.
thx
h yea there is a problem i want to sign up in dnd beyond but i want to sign in with google and it doesnt work so
I played the introductory demo and i finished it and i went into um the how to create character and watched the youtube video and i was confused on how to make one
Try #ddb-support - it's the forum for help with that platform.
Have you had a look at the Basic Rules, linked in the post above?
Same
Should i read all of it?
I also heard that you need a character sheet
You'll need Part 1 for making a character, and Part 2 to understand what that character might do. Part 3 is only needed if you choose a spellcasting class (at least at first!). You won't need to read Part 4. The Appendices are just some lore stuff.
Uhh i chose my role to be a wizard so do i need part 3?
Yes, you will - it describes how spellcasting works, and lists the spells available to you. Since you need to pick some spells, you can treat that like a menu.
Btw do i need dices? When making a character?
For a new player, I would recommend using standard array or point buy (described in the basic rules) rather than rolling dice for your ability scores. While rolling dice is "traditional", there are very few tables that will accept a rolled character without seeing the rolls happen. Standard Array or Point Buy will automatically make a "balanced" character, that will fit almost any table.
A little tip: anticipate being very weak in at least one or two stats. Unless you are playing a specific class and role that benefits from it, it's better to specialise rather than attempt to be an all-rounder.
Thats confusing but ill try to understand that when im done reading all the basic rules
Dnd sounds hard but its very intriguing
There are a lot of rules - it's worse if you are the DM, as you have to referee everything! But really it boils down to quite simple rolls, additions/subtractions, and comparisons.

Do i also read the handbooker?
the handbooker helper videos are bitesized explainers about the key points. if you watch that, it might make understanding the rules easier.
I don't know what the deviances are, but it does feel like Baldur's Gate 3 might be a great way to understand a lot of the rules too.
hello me and my friends are going to play dnd for the first time and im the dm
im trying to make a char sheet for all of them
what does that mean exactly?
its all lvl1
your "proficiency bonus" is the number that you add to d20 rolls for any skills/weapons/saving throws that your are "proficent" in
Have you read through the basic rules chapter on step-by-step character creation?
+2 proficiency bonus is what all level 1 characters start with
Do i need to read the rules to watch handbooker helper?
I dont understand the rules so im watching the handbooker helper on youtube š
is there somehow i can send a pic of the chart when its done and some of you guys can says its correct or not?
The videos just cover the basics of the rules. If you want to know the rules properly then you should read it.
Why do you need to send a picture? If it's the basic rules, it's correct
You don't need to, but I can't really tell you what you will and won't understand, since I'm not in your own head. If you watch one of those videos, and get confused by some of the jargon or feel like you might be missing something, then its probably a good idea to turn to the rules. Those videos are meant to be supplementary, and won't get you 100% ready to play with no reading whatsoever
im just kinda
overwhelmed if its the true word it isnt really great soruces as turksih
and my english is not that good to understand complex things
hey does anyone have any good spotify playlists for background and combat music for the sesh if so pls dm me
If it's your first time, try starting with premade character sheets first. Then move onto using arrays etc D&D Beyond have some premade. It is overwhelming, I my self am just getting into it. A lot of the stuff I felt you need to sleep on and then come back to. It then helped.
As you go further into it, you can look at creating character sheets for players.
š
There are no official turkish sources and discussing pirated material is against server rules
That's a question for #third-party, not this channel
Do you get premade characters in google?
sorry
i writed that wrong
Im wondering when you play do you need to be in vc?
there arent really great soruces in my language and my english is bad
You can find them in Beyond D&D > Characters > Create > Simple
shortly
I would say only do this once you've gone through 2 - 3 different videos for each part of D&D. There is a magic/vibe when you are using sheets that you might appreciate and enjoy.
That depends on your group. "Play by Post" is a style of play that some people prefer, where you type out your actions instead of using a voice chat
Thank god im shy so i prefer by chatting
But remember @lyric fjord As you figure it out, what's more important is to have fun and move the story forward rather than trying to follow all the rules. It's something you will find repeated over and over. For me the ultimate goal is to eventually get to a point where I understand all the rules.
Did it took you months to understand the rules?
thanks
Nah I got it on Wednesday and have just been binge watching videos on YouTube. I have the essential pack so I have been doing a dry run at creating a character as per the campaign for example and then using videos to explain where I am stuck. Then I moved onto leveling up and then found out how there's different ways to level up. Then I went into more of the DM stuff because I know a lot of people who would love to get into D&D but don't have anyone to DM.
Playing a 1on1 encounter to get some experience in before I do a 4 person one.
Search for Lost Mines of Phandelver on D&D Beyond, it's a free campaign with pre-made characters. Or use the free basic guide from D&D to learn the steps to creating your own characters.
Took me at least a solid 5-6 sessions of 3-4 hours each to be pretty confident in my understanding of the rules that applied to my rogue
ššš thats a lot
Why the crying? It was still enjoyable. I had fun.
My DM is a good friend and he was very willing to guide us. I think that's very important.
Haha sorry, I got my own party of newbies to DM for and they're enough of a handful
I mean I'd say just try to watch vidoes and then ask questions here if you have them.
Alrighty
Playing is the best way to learn em. And if you do something that's "against the rules" by accident, it's the DM's job to correct you or let it slide.
If the DM doesn't know the rule you're breaking, intentionally or unintentionally, oh well. That's kinda the way it works.
Should i play dnd even with half knowledge of the game? The DM will correct me right or maybe theyll get angry
That's an interpersonal issue not a game issue. A DM getting mad at new players for not knowing rules. The DM should set expectations up front.
Playing should give me experience on what not to do and do since the DM will be there to guide me
If everyone's learning, there should hopefully be no issue. If you're playing with folks who already know the game, then yes, they may get annoyed, but if you're honest about not knowing, ideally they'll work with you to get you up to speed.
If you find a group for a starter set campaign such as lost Mines of Phandelver, dragons of stormwreck isle, or dragons of icespire peak, chances are the rest of the party are newer players too. Or the DM should expect them to be.
Ill learn the very basic first before playing with other new players and an experienced DM
I already knew all the basics before I played my first session because I became obbsessed with D&D for a while.
I decided to try dnd because i saw it on youtube and it seems fun and i want to try
I get OCD as heck with this stuff so yeah I dove in head first
Was reading the PHB and XGtE cover to cover, which I gotta think most brand new players don't do.
I watched Critical Role's series, forget what it's called exactly.
Handbooker Helper?
Yeah that,.
Btw do the dices have meaning like every other dices has meaning (d4, d6, d8)??
Huh?
Oooh i started watching that just now
Most dice are used for damage/healing. The d20 is your main "doing stuff" dice.
And your character's hitpoints!
Oooh so the other dices are for attacks and healing?
Yep.
Exepct for percentile die, people never use those.
d4, d6, and d8 will usually be used for damage rolls or a spell effect (like Guidance adds a d4 bonus to rolls). Also, each class has "hit dice", which represent both how much you can heal on a short rest, and how much HP you gain per level (plus con).
Hit dice is for hit points for your character right?
While it's fine to get things wrong, and obviously the DM will be there to correct you if you are wrong, it's not their job to be a teacher. The DM can even be a new player themselves, and they have 100 other things to worry about besides explaining things that you can read in the Basic rules. Try to go in with at least an understanding of how to play your class.
Your hit dice is assinged by your class, not your race. Wizards have a d4 and Barbarians have a d12 I believe.
So wizards are currently weak? Cause they only have 4 hitpoint or lower
At level 1, your HP will be your Constitution Modifier, plus the maximum possible roll on your class's hit dice - for example, 10 for a fighter or 12 for a barbarian.
Then, when you level up, you roll a hit dice, and add that plus your constitution modifier (plus any other bonuses you get from features) to your HP maximum.
When you take a short rest, you can roll your hit die for healing. This can be done a number of times equal to your level (this is your hit dice pool), and you regenerate half of those dice when you take a long rest.
Wizards have low HP.
At a bare minimum, Iād recommend knowing these common terms, what to do on your turn, and how your characterās own abilities work.
Wizards hit die is a d6. They have lower hit points than other classes, but that doesn't make them weak.
Right cause they are a spell caster
Nor does being a spell caster make them strong.
If you have a negative constitution modifier, you should probably change that. š
Nah this was in reply to someone saying their hit die is a d4
Health aināt a wizardās strongest suit, but theyāve got a big toolkit to answer many challenges.
Do races matter in your character? Like for example i want my character to be fast so do i pick elves?
Is elves fast?
A wood elf has a higher-than-normal walking speed.
Ooh so races do matter
Tabaxi are probably the fastest.
Races get different bonuses/abilities. Whether that matters narratively is a question for the DM.
Is there a list of races and their abilities?
Each race has some bonuses. The main thing your DM will decide is whether racial ability score bonuses are fixed or portable. More recent rules have tended towards them being portable, so you can add a +2 and a +1 to whichever ability score you like, but the original RAW was for each race to have fixed bonuses, like +2 STR and +1 Wis, for example.
I pointed you to the right section in the basic rules earlier.
You should still try to read that.
Yeah it said races but i didnt see the races abilities
For the spell danse macabre, how much of the body is still considered a corpse? Do organs have to remain?
Each race describes it own abilities.
It's the same content as on the page iamrazorwing linked.
More #dnd-rules or possibly #dm-discussion than here.
Look under the section marked "Traits" for each race.
Ok
Jale? Whats a fey i picked elfs and it has this traits fey ancestrals
Fey are magical creatures closely tied to the forces of nature. They dwell in twilight groves and misty forests. In some worlds, they are closely tied to the Feywild, also called the Plane of Faerie. Some are also found in the Outer Planes, particularly the planes of Arborea and the Beastlands. Fey include dryads, pixies, and satyrs.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#Type
Fey are the inhabitants of the feywild, a parallel world of heightened magic and emotion. Fairies, for example.
It's based in european myths and legends of faries before the victorians sort of sanitised it. So it's the more dark side of being "away with the fairies"
Hey!
Hi happy Friday
Worth noting, btw: within the rules your elf is a humanoid, and not a fey themself.
Talking with you guys makes me want to learn dnd even more
We're biased here, but we think it's fun.
Btw Artificers create stuff right? I did my research on classes
Back, I'll be hanging out in here for a bit so any questions just ask.
Yes, they are like a tinkerer/inventor class mostly.
Isn't their whole thing they make regular objects magic items?
Ooooh they can make magic items
Correct.
Oh right I played an Artificer and made a bag of holding at level 2 š
Do the artificer create their own magic items or the DM decides what item they make
Their subclasses are making robotic cannons, a combat robot, an iron man suit, andan alchemy class
I believe you take an item and can gave it properties from a list.
Guys im making my first ever characterin dndbeyond
There are guidelines on what they can make depending on level
