right now i only read the first and second chapters of the basic rules, i dont want to read all but any you suggest me reading?
I do suggest going through the free basic rules and read the first 4 chapters as that covers how to create a character. Then read Chapter 7 and Chapter 9 which deal with skill checks and combat. And maybe chapter 8 (Adventuring) if you want. Anything else you read can be helpful but honestly, knowing where to look is more important than knowing it all.
The handbook helper videos can be helpful too: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/105653019 well i have already tackled a character, mainly just had a concept then people in #optimization and #character-discussion helped me finish it, and people said it was ok so its fine by me
So the character part is handled - I'd read up on using ability scores and combat
yeah ill do that then, character classes are a little hard to choose i find
fighter is like really basic but gets what i want done, while monk is alot more unique but complicated with its ki mechanic
That's okay - I like the fighter class myself. Well actually I like all the classes as they all have their role and fun little features.
another problem i face is if i make one i fear im kind of locked into it, like what if i get bored of the fighter like a couple dungeons into a campaign, is there any way to spice a class up?
Talk to your DM and group - some groups are fine with "retiring" an old character and bringing on a new one at a similar level as the old. But it can impact the adventuring party's dynamics so thus why check with your DM and group.
At any rate I wouldn't worry about it.
alright then thanks, i think you have addressed most of my concerns. sorry for asking so many questions by the way
Hey that's what this channel is for - helping new-to-D&D folks get started with this fun game!
well while looking for DMs in looking for players ill just browse memes i guess
how long should it take to find a group?
thats fair enough guess ill look around on else where to find a group
If you get frustrated waiting to find a DM, you can always try looking into being the DM yourself. It's a challenge, but it's still very achievable for a new player to do. I started as a DM myself.
i can try but i think what ive made up is a bit much for people as its very much "f around and find out" with my own rules here and there for fun
yeah you cant exactly do much more than wait for that notification sound, then you check if the description of the group matches what you want
ok yeah it really takes a while, 3 hours and no dm yet
I think you need to temper expectations. 3 hours is nothing
It can take days or weeks
Yup. It can go hours to years, tho admittedly the years bit is more for finding your permanent group as life changes.
I usually only play with co-workers/ex-coworkers/co-workers of ex-coworkers. It was only recently after losing three players I scouted out to people outside the game industry and recruited two new players within half an hour (I had to turned down several people).
Oh yeah DM privilege is going to vastly decrease the time it takes to find players.
yeah most of the people wanting to play are players, so when a dm with a flexible time period shows up everyone flocks to them
Hi, is there any server for new players to learn to play through playing? I already uderstand basic rules but its hard to learn only in theory
we have #looking-for-community
Thank you
At level 3, you gain a subclass which will add abilities to your character, and more over time. As you grow more comfortable with game mechanics and your character more play options emerge
is it that archetype thing?
Fun fact: the word "subclass" is never actually used in the PHB.
(Though it does get used in later books.)
But yeah, Martial Archetype is the name for Fighter subclasses.
It says that fighters can start with (a) a martial weapon and a shield or (b) two martial weapons.
Can he choose to start with one of the very expensive items like the two handed sword that deals 2d6 damage?
yeah i chose champion because i didnt plan for mine to use a gun
Yep. If there was meant to be a cost restriction, it would have to state it there.
Thank you!
help, SOS etc. #ddb-support message
Regarding weapon properties, you can find those described here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#WeaponProperties
Neither heavy or light have any effect on your attack bonus.
Is there a specific weapon you're trying to figure out?
so what do i put
greataxe
A greataxe is a melee weapon, so it uses your Strength modifier.
If you're proficient with greataxes or with martial weapons in general, you can also add your proficiency bonus.
i see, so how do i decide what modifier to use on other weapons?
The general rule is that melee weapons use Strength, and ranged weapons use Dexterity.
A weapon with the finesse property will let you choose Strength or Dexterity.
So if you had +2 Strength and +3 Dexterity...
- A greataxe (a melee weapon) would use +2 Strength.
- A longbow (a ranged weapon) would use +3 Dexterity.
- A rapier (a finesse weapon) could use either, so you'd probably want the higher +3 Dexterity.
gotcha
In combat, if you are wearing a shield and a sword (1d8). Does it take a turn to put the shield away and use the sword 2h (1d10) or can you do that in the same turn and attack?
Thank you!
If it was anything other than a shield, that would work, though.
how does dnd decide if a weapon is one handed or not?
They just did. No process behind it other than trying to balance
Its a game they arent trying be perfectly accurate
oh i see
there's something I don't understsand about spellcasting focus
if you want to shoot with a bow but cast Hex before
you need to hold your focus first and then use your 2 hands to shoot
but does that take anything except a bonus action to cast Hex and an action to shoot ?
If it doesn't have the Two-handed property, it's one-handed by default. That's the easiest way to think about it!
Because a bow has the Two Handed property, you cannot fire a bow if you have a spellcasting focus in your other hand. That other hand must be empty in order for you to make an attack.
During a turn, you can interact with one object as part of another action, such as drawing a weapon as part of an attack, or opening a door as part of your movement. You can only do this once, and if you want to interact with a second object, it would require your action to do so. Drawing/stowing a spellcasting focus as part of casting a spell would be this "object interactions" for that turn. So, if you started the turn with a bow in one hand and a focus in the other, you could use your bonus action to cast hex, then store the focus. Then as your action, you could fire the bow. But if you started your turn with the bow in one hand and the other hand was empty, then drawing the spellcasting focus would be your 1 object interaction, which means you wouldn't be able to store it afterwards. You'd have to just drop it on the floor if you want to be able to attack with the bow, because dropping it is free (check this with your DM, but that is the standard interpretation of the rules.)
This, however, is overcomplicating the process, because Component Pouches exist, and would function a lot better in the case. If you had you component pouch on your hip, you would be able to simply draw the component from the pouch instead of your spellcasting focus, which would mean that after you finish casting, you wouldn't need to stow the focus, and would be able to fire the bow without issue
Bravo as usual
hm you think it’s possible to strap a health potion on a arrow and shoot it at ally’s to heal
Hi peeps I’m new to dungeons and dragons what do I do it looks interesting
Same honestly
Not within the standard rules of the game, but this is a fun idea that I've seen some DMs allow in the past. If you want to stretch the boundaries of what's possible, its always best to have that conversation with your DM, because we can't give you any definitive answer other than what's possible with the normal rules. Everything else is the DM's to decide
Oh ok lol

Can u drop the shield(completely discard) in order to 2 hand in the same action. I guess the question boils down to if unequiping is the same as discarding the equipment

Thanks!

Are Druids meant to deal damage or are they mainly utility?
Yes
Think about druid like they are somewhere between a cleric and a wizard. They honestly can do quite a bit all and all.
Any spellcaster can be utility if they put their mind to it!
Druids, more than other classes, are very much defined by their subclasses. So there's no one role for all druids, really. You can be very melee, very wild-shape reliant, very caster-reliant, summon lots of pets to do fighting for you...
Likewise, any caster can deal quite a bit of damage!
The way Druid casting works, they can take entirely support spells and then at the next long rest, swap them out for all attack spells. So you aren't locked.
Ok Ty
this is prolly a stupid question but baldurs gate 3 got me kinda intrested in this whole dnd thing i was wondering if its a good way to learn like dnd rules and stuff
I heard it’s supposed to be a good way to get into it so id say so
I don't think it's a one-to-one translation, though. See Elgate's comment here: #non-dnd-topics message

hi
Hey, mine’s pretty okay
is there any game/server where people play dnd without the dnd fantazy world? like for example where it is possible to have different spieces or more advanced technology?
i know it is possible in normal dnd but i would like to create my ideas that i am not sure that would fit in normal dnd
to name a few
-a hust of a long dead hero, a necromancer where it questions its own existence
-a chaotic god who isn't in your avarage religion, instead he seeks entertainment and challenge among strong heroes/villains who he is able to challenge with his unlimited power
-a normal human that was caught by mysterious goo, that gained powers after maing the human it host, a symbiotic relationship between two different beings
-a superhero who can fly in unbelievable speeds with incredible strenght and dexterity, being able to survive (tho still feel) the hot hot magma
-a GLitCh that appears whenever the world rules get broken a bit too much (in a more game-style sense)
-a world where characters from different franchises can appear (mostly undertale) a world where multiversum exist
-a commanter with his best blocky pet/assistant/creation(who wasn't made by him) trying to rule over a city by using his blocky friend that multiplies and creates giants and mini solders that attack with mini weapons (like a gun or a bazooka)
as you can see
a lot of ideas
and i am not sure on how much normal dnd allows or how the world in dnd works, but i would to create mine or join in into a community that allows it
any help?
As DM you can create your campaign setting as you see fit.
Have seen steampunk worlds, low magic worlds, no magic worlds. Have seen Mass Effect, Final Fantasy XIV. At the end of the day, the rules are a system you can adapt and utilize to create whatever world you desire. If you want a non-fantasy world or an alternative to the classical style of fantasy, pursue it
There are many official D&D campaign settings that don't fit the typical fantasy mold (Dark Sun, Planescape, Spellljammer, Ravenloft)
i am not sure how to dm
and i am also not sure what about other people already existing characters
like... the world i see might be a lot different with perhaps different mechanics and world rules
like different kinds of magic
or technology (like smartphones)
Have you read the rules of D&D yet? Because you seem to just want to create the ideas but don't seem seem to know what the game is about?
D&D is just one TTRPG. You may want to look at other TTRPG rulesets if you feel that D&D is too constraining.
i know the very basics of dnd
i forgor to read the dnd rules
like?
Perhaps read them again to know what you're limited to?
Depends on what you want? Scifi? Horror? Anime? There is TTRPG for practically every genre you can think of.
every
Google is your friend then.
I mean if you really are allergic to reading then just use a die and roll it for checks (higher is better)
That's pretty much the entire game is roll a 20 sided die and roll high
perhaps i can read dnd rules and change them in the ways that fit me
Outside of that it's just thinking logically as the dungeon master what happens when number is big or small
And knowing when to ask for the die to be rolled
If you can do that and slowly integrate 5e rules you should be fine
That's a lot of work, especially if you're new to TTRPGs. Again, I recommend look at other TTRPGs to see if they fit to what you want
I honestly agree, messing with the rules can change the game quite a bit. Run the game as is first and find what you like and dislike
It's a kid who never rode a car before but wants to customize a car without knowing how the engine works.
how do you start playing?

You can absolutely switch genres. I've been running an eberron space opera campaign for about 8 years now.
the game is pre-flavored for fantasy but once you have proficiency in running a table you can swap out genre very easily. implementing new mechanics is secondary to how you flavor them.
the one thing is
i would like to have a lil bit of everything
like a world where characters with different magic systems can interact
like a wizard that uses crystals and potion meeting with a sci-fi robot fighting off a cartoony-style villain with a inator that turns everything into chicken
just a random idea, but i hope i made the massage across
Learn the game so you know the boundaries based on the rules.
i first need to learn the rules to know how to break them
D&D is a game with magic in it but if you want a world that has 0% magic well, probably D&D isn't the ruleset for you to use then.
Or look at another game that may suit your needs rather than learning a game and trying to break it and find out it's a mess because you don't know what you're doing.
Yes, homebrewing is a thing but I try to give advice to new players who want to jump head first into it without knowing what they're doing.
is there another game with a different character sheet system?
that's not totally on-point. "spells", "magic items", "rituals" are codified specific effects that require action economy and/or resources to trigger.
"magic" is a flavor same as steam punk vs sci fi.
anything in the game can be codified as sci fi or whatever... we just need to set game world narrative boundaries and a means of importing features into the narrative.
the original assessment of understanding how game mechanics and table play actually runs is the bottom line to modifying the game away from its "factory default setting"
Each TTRPGs has their own unique character sheets.
You take out magic (spells, features) and that's a good chunk of D&D rules. Yes, it's been done before with d20 Modern. It's doable but that was with people who knew the d20 system already.
there's a billion games. this is the point where you start to explore various game systems. try searches in youtube for folks with opinions to share them with you.
so youtube is my friend and research is the key
Yes
There are many Youtubers who talk about D&D and other TTRPGs.
There are many who avoid talking about D&D.
I love the old WebDM series with Jim and Pruitt
my point was that you don't have to remove spells to not have magic. a sanctuary spell doesn't need to be divine protection... spend a 1st-level resource and for a minute folks have to think twice before attacking you.
in a Toon-skinned genre this could be expressed as a big eyed stare a la puss in boots. Wisdom save or too cute to attack.
etc.
That's reflavouring...
that was the point i made
My point was that to deter a new someone new to the hobby of making more work than necessary when there may be a system that is more well suited for what they want.
the original question was how to reskin DnD. you're in a tangent
A deep discussion of the limits of reflavouring and homebrew probably isn't on topic for the newcomers channel.
Thank you.
What do y’all think about vampires as players?
Vampires may bite the other players.
Vampires would be too powerful as player characters.
Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft has the Dhampir race, a pseudo-vampire playable race. Ask your DM if they allow the dhampir.
Vampires or any kind of extreme thing like that I almost always say no to in character creation.
HOWEVER if something happens that changes a PC in game then so be it.
I think with vampires in particular I would probably take control away from the player or impose severe restrictions.
Palidans and clerics of non evil alignment should lose their powers and all that.
I think the only time I've allowed vampires in character creation was vampire the masquerade.... because that's the whole game lol
Im like brand new to dnd, is there anything i should look at or know in particular?

I'm brand new too!
I just made my character, that first link really helps!
What did you make?
I bet a bard
just finished making a decent character LMAOOO all my other characters dms dont accept bc they hav their own race and shtuff
Is anyone here looking to join a game?
me!
Just a heads up, but game invites should be posted in our #looking-for channels instead. There’s instructions in #find-a-game to get you started.
Oh sorry
Why does far step use concentration? Can you keep using it without using up a spell slot after the first time?
It only uses a spell slot when you cast it
After that you maintain concentration on it to be able to keep repeating the effect for free for the duration
I made a human bard! Nothing too complicated
are there any suggested classes for beginner players?
Fighter or barbarian are good for newer players
The martial classes tend to be simpler.
Less to keep track of
Getting into spellcasting adds complexity, but none of it is unknowable.
Except monk imo
Basically fighter is simplest, then barb, then rogue, then monk imo
The absolute easiest thing you could pick is a human champion fighter. But not everyone wants to be a human champion fighter.
Yeah
So I’m of the general opinion that you should just pick whatever interests you.
Yeah
Some might be a little more work than others, but there’s plenty of people here happy to help you figure things out.
hi i know absolutely nothing about DND, where can i find a guide on how to play and how it works?

awesome thanks
thanks, normally i like to be a beefy boi or ranged, pretty opposite styles tho haha
Barbarians tend to be the beefiest bois.
But a fighter could fit either of those roles, too.
Barbarian is a perfect beefy boi and fighter can easily be built around archery
gotcha, i kinda arbitrarily chose paladin bc in games ive played they are kinda frontline/supporty
That’s a good choice, too!
from my understanding at least
Yeah Paladin is a good tank as well
Slightly more complicated but totally doable
They’re basically a tank with a bit of support
Good damage as well
thanks you two, im sure ill have a megaton of quesitons in the future, im basically clueless
Have you read the basic rules?
not from the link, i should rpobably do that now
i actually played a random session with some friends, they helped me make a character and stuff and now im kinda hooked, i did struggle fitting into my charachter though because i didnt really know what was going on
Is arcane eye a little redundant if you have find familiar?
Not necessarily. The eye has much more range, and it's invisible. There's definitely some overlap in their utility.
That's less of a newcomer question, though, and more for #dnd-discussion or #character-discussion, depending what you're looking to get from the query.
The range confuses me it says 10 feet but then in the description it says you can use it while its in 100 feet
What "it"?
Find familiar says range: 10 feet then later the description says while its within 100 feet you can see through its eyes
You can summon it within 10 feet when you cast the spell initially, but otherwise, yes, you can use its vision up to 100 feet away from you.
What's up bois
Question can you find campaigns to join on here?
If anyone knows...
Yes, check #find-a-game.
But you said the eye has more range it only has 30 feet the familair has 100
the eye can move 30ft at a time but the spell states "There is no limit to how far away from you the eye can move, but it can't enter another plane of existence. " Whereas your familiar cannot communicate with you past 100ft
Can you replace eldritch invocations as you level up?
Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the invocations you know and replace it with another invocation that you could learn at that level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#EldritchInvocations-388
hello hello!
Heyo! I know like the bare basics of DnD and have never played a full campaign. Any tips on starting? Like what classes are easier and how I should think going into a campaign?
Well martial classes tend to be easier but play what you want!
☝️ We had a chat about an hour ago about easy starting classes.
Uhuh
i honestly would say barbarian maybe?? big guy hit stuff
But yeah any questions are welcome!
My list of general player tips: #dnd-newcomers message
To those I'd add, "Don't make your fun interfere with anyone else’s.”
I made a character yesterday with the most scuffed stats
A high elf rogue with 9 (-1) attack and then 20 (+5) dexterity
So now my boy is walking around with +12 stealth and +7 sleight of hand but absolutely no attack
Uhhh
Dog dex can be used for your attack Stat if you have finesse weapons
Your character is godlike
That's actually true, how did I forget that
I have two daggers and two shortswords, my character is insane
That's actually- that just blew my mind, I completely forgot about finesse
I'm relatively new to DnD, I've only played a few times, I get the general gist of it but details slip my mind
For sure, rapier is the best dex weapon by far just fyi
Will invest
Tyty <33 Ill be using this and everything else everyone said!!
For me the problem isn't "which class and race should i start with", it's the fact that I don't know what I'm doing
I have to be told everything and i feel really guilty when I don't know basic things like how attacks work and stuff like that
Have you tried reading where that stuff is written in the basic rules? Having it explained in the simple way the rules does it could help
I remember I tried learning from that before but my brain didn't brain
I'll try again tomorrow, and if that doesn't work I'll ask someone to explain it to me in person cause like, I don't even know
My brain is great with roleplay, character building, world building, lore and so forth, but the rules with the dice and the math and stuff, that just doesn't want to stay in there
I seem to be having trouble finding a game .-.
Where/how are you looking?
Unfortunately it may take time to find a game. The ratio of players to DM's is heavily skewed with far more players than there are DM's. Just have to keep at it until you find the right table
I’ve been looking at the ads in #looking-for-players
But I don’t really want to join in mod game in a high level character game
Or like, worlds based on other magic systems/futuretech
Wdym by other magic systems?
Search elsewhere: other Discords, Reddit, Facebook, etc. Here's a list of places to check out: #third-party-tools-archive message
I mean I don’t want to join those
I mainly want to find a game to get the hang of how stuff works and then maybe run a campaign for friends who don’t play it currently
Idk if there’s people who like to dm for groups of new people .-.
I hope so D:
what ability scores are important for a fighter?
I'm with you I just wanna leaaarrnnn
Strength or Dexterity first. Depends on what type of Fighter you are wanting to build. Constitution second. Mental scores (Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma) are dump stats for a Fighter.
But they may be important for particular subclasses.
Idk I've been looking but I'm not getting my hopes up I feel like ppl on here aren't looking for newbies lol
I have like the ideas for making a story arc, but never played so I don’t really know how to manage people or game rules
thanks, also, how important is skill versatility? should be chosen based off the specific campaign setting i assume?
I assume a group of all fighters will get kited by something that can fly or cc
Can’t kill what you can’t touch
Not necessarily. This is why there are Dex-based Fighters who focus on ranged weaponry over melee combat
But limited options for your own cc
I love to personally but i do not run 5e anymore
It since the accident
I think new players are the best players by far
What is 5e?
5th edition
o
5e is dungeons and dragons 5th edition
what do you run if not 5e?
1-4 or other games
A lot of games actually are newcomer-friendly even if they’re not explicitly advertised as such.
So if you see one you’re interested in, it can’t hurt to ask.
I really like Dungeon Crawl Classics and I'll probably run that forever.
I've ran other stuff too and it's been hit or miss for me.
I'll play almost anything though.
i didnt realize there was so much range to dnd
The hobby is HUUGE dungeons and dragons is the biggest one and a very good starting point
My style of play is closer to older versions of the game though.
There are also games that use d100 or d6s instead of a d20. Some systems even want you to roll low instead of high.
ah golf dnd haha
Well its more like roll under your skill.
So let's say d100 roll under...
I want to shoot you and have a ballistic of 47, I have to meet or roll under 47 to shoot you
Instead of dnd where I match or beat your ac with a d20 roll
very intruiging
For sure, feel free to experiment, there are so many good dungeons and dragons books from 3.5 and back
I can't say much on 4e but there are diehard fans of that too
There’s also pathfinder which is a seperate d20 system that split off from dnd 3rd edition
greetings and salutations.... new here
Oh there are also games which are skill based instead of class based
Those tend to be more rules heavy in my experience
We’ve got #non-dnd-topics if you want to delve into the wider world of TTRPGs.
thanks
Welcome! New to D&D or just new to the server?
new to the server... started playing in 2 groups here in my town.. know of D&D, last time i really played was in the 90s ... Dragonlance... been watching Critical Role S1 these past few weeks... was wondering how doing D&D online would work....
i blame BG3 for my D&D itch coming back... lol
There’s a good article here that covers some popular options for playing online.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Hello all. New here just looking for advice and focusing on learning the rules thanks for any and all help

If you want to pick up where you left off, #dnd-elder-editions has people still playing the previous editions.
If you want to check out the current edition, the Basic Rules are available here:

i mostly need assitance with charachter development im not really sure where to start
What have you got so far?
The basic rules have a step by step guide to making a character
appreciate the info sir.. thank you
ngl... think ive gone a little crazy using Beyond.. lol... used it to make my 2 new characters for the 2 groups ive joined.. but i think ive created about 15 new characters by now, prolly gonna make more
Character creation can be fun
i was told to take it easy my first go around so ive chosen a cleric hill dwarf. ok i will look into the basic rules
thankyou!
Is there a specific place you’re stuck, then?
heck yeah... and adding more of the books, getting more fun by the day with the different races and sub-classes
i mostly just need to find resources to learn about the race ive chosen so i can actually develop the character based on those traits
Hill dwarf is on dnd beyond
basic players handbook should have info too correct?
Yeah
my first character i created using Beyond is a Hill Dwarf Forge Cleric of Moradin...
nice guide
I've made a character on dnd beyond and I want to join a campaign but I don't know what kind I should look for
As someone new to DND what is the best character type/race/class to start with?
race wont matter much, for class i would start with fighter, barbarian, or rogue
I'd agree that Fighter, Barbarian, or Rogue, as they have the least "required reading" to play.
thank you
thank you
I've got a couple of newbie questions about using the DnD Beyond app to run a campaign.
Me and my 2 kids are playing DnD for the very first time. Picked up Lost mine of Phandelver and the essentials kit a couple of weeks ago. We're currently exploring the Redbrands hideout. We have no experience with DnD and I have opted for a simplified approach to the game, allowing us to enjoy the story and rather view the rules as guidelines.
I'm wondering if the DnD Beyond app could be used without having to follow the rules to the letter?
I was hoping to use the app manage the characters. Keep track of inventory, and assist in the leveling up. But still allow me to customize the characters strengths outside the strict rules.
And can the encounters be customized to allow magic to be used more than once? Can the damage taken by attacks be tweaked (manually assigned)?
what do you mean to allow magic to be used more than once?
In an encounter, usually a magic spell can only be cast once according to the rules.
Can I bypass that if I use the app for encounters?
That's not the rule. Can you identify the bit of text where you got that idea, so we can see where the misconception is coming from? Since you have the starter set, I imagine the text is the same as the Basic Rules?
It's probably referring to another rule or feature, so if I know where it's coming from, I can hopefully explain what it means.
Are you on about PC spell slots or enemies that have spells in their description that say they can cast it once a day
It's this part on spell slots from the basic rules:
"When a character casts a spell, he or she expends a slot of that spell's level or higher, effectively "filling" a slot with the spell. You can think of a spell slot as a groove of a certain size--small for a 1st-level slot, larger for a spell of higher level. A 1st-level spell fits into a slot of any size, but a 9th-level spell fits only in a 9th-level slot. So when Umara casts magic missile, a 1st-level spell, she spends one of her four 1st-level slots and has three remaining.
Finishing a long rest restores any expended spell slots."
Spell slots are like ammunition. However, they aren't tied to a particular spell. It's confusing terminology, I know! You can use all of your spell slots to cast one spell over and over, if you like.
When you prepare a spell (assuming you are a class that does prepared spellcasting), the number of spells you can prepare is not determined by the number of slots you have available to cast them, either. The term "slot" does imply that you need to pick a spell, and put it in that slot. But in reality, slots are just like magic "bullets" and the prepared spells are like the "guns" you are taking into battle to fire those bullets.
I see. So if a character has 3 spell slots, it means the character can cast 3 spells during a battle? And it can be the same spell 3 times or 3 different spells one time (or any in between)?
If a character has 2 1st level spell slots and 1 2nd level spell slot they can cast any 2 first level spells and any 1 second level spell per long rest
Or they can cast a first level spell using a second level spell slot if they choose
However a second level spell needs a second level slot or higher
guys guys is the paladin proficient in both ranged and melee simple/martial weapons?
Im glad i chose barbarian
Yes, the only part you are getting a little off is the "during a battle" - it's more like "that day", i.e. before they take a long rest, for most classes, Warlock being the exception.
And of course, Cantrips are seperate, and do not consume a slot.
Magic seems confusing
Yep
Paladins are proficient with all weapons (except Firearms, usually!)
It’s more complicated
gotcha, thanks yall
Treat magic as stated above as ammo, you have a certain amount to use a day on the main spells and infinite ammo on cantrips
If I use the app, I guess it will follow these rules? Can I "reset" the spellslots during battle, allowing the character to use them again?
I don't use the App myself, so I don't know what limitations it sets. Whether you can just increase the number of slots available so they can cast their big spells over and over again. I'll give it a go and check,.
Yeah if you want to remove the limitation on numbers of spells cast, and you are using DND Beyond, then it looks like you just have to manually click to remove the expended slots.
I know you are playing this with kids, but this will really put a bit of a time limit on your campaign. If they are using their biggest spells every turn, it will make things very boring for the non-casters quite quickly. Probably fine for their first taste through LMoP, but if you want to carry on I would recommend introducing the spellcasting rules back in for your next campaign.
I'm not criticising what you are doing currently, though. Depending on the age of the children, making spellcasting simpler can be a very good idea.
Returning to DnD after a bit of hiatus (45yrs). I still play a lot of war games though. One thing I have been looking for are the rules around moral. Both for the PCs and hostiles. Still plowing through the rules and may have missed it.
D&D doesn’t really have a morale system - it’s very much up to the DM to decide if monsters run away or to encourage the party to run away. There are some conditions like Frightened and Stunned but those are more individual effects and not really “morale” based.
At least in 5th edition I should clarify.
There’s no official morale system for 5e, but I think generally most enemies that are sentient thinking people might run if there leader or 50% of their group is killed
Interesting. In games like ASL some of the most complex rules are those dealing with morale and routs. So there are no morale/courage values for PCs?
Yes, there’s no official rules for how that works exactly, but there are conditions that can prevent a character from doing something
Good example is Frightened, it forces the affected person to move away from something on its turn
I don’t understand the evasive footwork maneuver, don’t you stop moving after your turn is done? Then all attacks would be happening when I’m not moving
just looked on roll20 and it looks like a really good virtual tabletop
I'm making a character for the first time but I don't know how to scale the ability score
what do you mean by that?
like inteligence and wisdom
yeah but what do you mean by scaling them? do you not know where to assign your points?
Hey everyone I'm a bit new to dungeons and dragons 😅
It's very good for getting into VTT play in general, because it's free and very convenient. I started there, and I left it because there are aspects of it which are super janky, it gates some pretty vital features behind subscriptions, and ultimately its featureset was beginning to become limiting. Moved to Foundry, which is a pay-once and host-yourself, and had a much better time as a DM - players love it too. So my advice: do start with Roll20, but get your books through DDB or in hardcopy, because if you do mesh with VTT play, you will probably outgrow Roll20 eventually, and you don't want to be locked into their ecosystem by a sunk cost!
Hey welcome!
Thanks I know absolutely nothing about it other than the fact that I made a virtual figurine for fun
nice, heroforge i'm assuming?
General advice for newcomers: start with Standard Array. Put the biggest value into the stat that your class is most dependent on: e.g. Strength for fighters, Dex for rogue, intelligence for wizards. Constitution should also be one of your top 3. See how far that gets you, and feel free to ask for specific advice!

@lyric fjord you can learn how to play via the links in the bot post above 🙂
Yep, I made a foreclaimer gladiator
While I won’t spend any money on DDB I appreciate the help, I was just attracted with Roll20 for the two reasons you stated, it’s free (and in turn popular) and it’s convenient
So, Foreclaimers aren't official content: they were from someone's youtube series. It's what we call Homebrew. There are multiple flavours of elf that might fit the same vibe, though - and it's ultimately up to your DM whether a particular character (and any homebrew) fit in the game they are running.
heroforge is probably one of the most useful bits of software for DND imo, helps a lot with visualising PC's which is like, most of what you're doing in the game. It's good you've discovered it this early on, a lot of DMs appreciate it when you have a physical appearance for your character and a lot of those appreciate it when you've made it yourself 🙂
What would be the closest official race to a foreclaimer in that case?
From what I understand, they are sun-powered techno elves who are really unempathetic. So you might want to consider:
Sun Elf aka High Elf: Rare, basically like High Elves from Elder Scrolls. MNo actual sun mechanisms.
Shadar-Kai: From the dark mirror to the material plane. Super duper unempathetic. Kinda undead.
Eladrin: From the bright, wild mirror to the material plane, the Feywild, Very emotional and moody. Associated to a season, so a Summer Eladrin is fire themed.
Can I keep the gem in his chest?
As mentioned, a DM will be deciding what is or is not allowed for players in their game. High Elf is likely to be allowed, because it's in the Player Handbook and is so sort of a "core race". Everything else might be debateable, and is ultimately their decision.
Probably, i don't see why any DM wouldn't allow that as long as it's just an appearance thing.
If a player asked me "I would like to play a High Elf, and can they have a gem stuck in their chest which they hide from people", I would ask to know the secret behind it, and what it might mean, and probably allow it. But I'm not your DM.
To me it acts both as a symbol of social status and coming of age
If you want it to have actual lore and backstory implications for your character and their race as a whole then you'd need to discuss that with your DM probably
Good to know
It's to increase your AC for avoiding any opportunity attacks or readied actions that might happen during your turn.
Hey guys
Hi there this is my first time doing dnd can some one help
What issue are you having?
I made a chacter what do i do next
I don't really understand how character levelling work.. If you're new you should start with level 1?
how do i join a dnd caimpian
online
Check out #find-a-game
i did
If and when you find a group to play with be prepared to create a new character because the DM will probably ask you to.
how long will it take me to find a group
Between now and never.
oh
Finding a good group is like dating — you may not get a response, you may get ghosted, you may get drama, etc.
Okay how do i play online
like i dont wnt to go some were to play
It depends what the DM has set up — I use Discord for text and voice chat, D&D Beyond for my players' character sheets and shared digital books, and a virtual tabletop (VTT) for the maps.
okay can i join your campighn
No.
- I don't know you.
- It's full at six players.
- I only DM to players who already know how to play (sorry this is a long campaign and I don't have time to teach new players)
shamelessly copied from another channel,
if you want to find a game to join you can check out #looking-for-players where DM's looking for players, #looking-for-community for Westmarch stile games and #paid-looking-for-game in case you have the funds. You can also make your own post in #750812887697588356 using the instructions in #find-a-game :)
How much for paid looking game in general?
depends on the DM. but they can range from 5 dollars a session to a lot. We don't realy regulate that because everyone has to be responsible for their own financial choices^^'
was looking at other VTTs aside from roll20 and i saw this one called owlbear rodeo, does it do anything different compared to roll20?
Hey everyone I'm new here was wandering how to start playing i already have a character just need more info
Sounds like you’re ready to find a group to play with. Please check out #find-a-game and read it carefully- it has information on how to use our #looking-for channels.
It's free and simpler (much less features). I've never used it so I can't say how good it is. I use Foundry VTT (it has an one-time $50 license fee).
ah i see, might try it out one day then
I don't really understand how character levelling work.. If you're new you should start with level 1?
Depends on the group, some like to start higher
I see!
Hi guys! Anyone have any tips or videos on how to learn this fantastic game? I love it so much but it’s so hard and I’m scared to play with other people because I don’t want to ruin their experience. Thanks for anyone who will help 🙏❤️
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

For sure, thanks ❤️
You should also read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).

Basic Rules on D&D Beyond

Get the players handbook
Step 1: Don't forget, you're here forever
In all seriousness, most players are gonna be chill with newbies, and are always willing to help people out! If you find a group that's a jerk to you about being new, eat their dice.
I'm a fan of JoCat's Crap Guide to D&D, but I'm sure other ppl here have better newbie-friendly resources.
The main thing to know is that although the PHB looks daunting, not all of it will be relevant to your character setups. You don't need to devour a 300-page book just to learn how to play
Amazon link? Pls
i think one of the bots eats links if we post 'em
The free basic rules are fine to start with - don't buy anything unless you're sure you like the game and want more.
also 100% i recommend purchasing a PHB from your local game store! gotta support ya LGS
plus it's prolly cheaper than amazon
Don't spend money until you are sure you like the game. The free Basic Rules is essentially like a video game demo (try it before you buy it).
Thanks I will check out anything you said
It contains almost everything you as a player need to know, if you want to be a DM I recommend the dungeon Masters guide https://www.amazon.com/Dungeon-Masters-Guide-Dungeons-reglament/dp/0786967536/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=141ZGBL5UPL4J&keywords=dungeon+masters+guide&qid=1691254677&sprefix=dungeon+masters+guide%2Caps%2C98&sr=8-3
What’s a dm1?
I think I would work better as a player
Yeah, don’t become a dungeon master, until you’re confident in your abilities as a player
Probably should’ve mentioned that
Np man thanks for your help
Thank you
I became a dm before being a player
hello
Really?
Yeah
Did they like it?
My dming?
Yea
Yeah
Being a DM is just another way to play D&D. It's a bit more to take on but can be just as or even more fun than being a player.
Of course it all depends on you and your group.
I just started being a player and my first character from scratch I was so confused
Making monsters is so much easier than making a player
I made a Tabaxi Barbarian
Yeah, but once you’ve made your character you have it for the whole session
Well yeah
I haven’t played it yet but I have it ready
I am dming 2 campaigns then one of my friends will
I’m teaching them to dm and they teach me to be a player
Cool
If we continue on, we will implement more and more of the rules as we go along. The non spell caster in this campaign is having a blast attacking with his sword and pet wolf!
Sounds fun, are you paying over discord?
No in person
We have a meet maybe 2 every month
I’m in a friend group that I see all the time and we play together
Did you make the campaign or buy one?
We should probably keep this channel open for new to D&D folks to ask questions and take the general D&D game chatter to somewhere like #dnd-discussion or #dm-discussion depending on what level we;re digging into.
what is the best way to get into DnD and learn how to DM and play aswell? we are couple of friends who want to give it a go but none of us have ever played it. what exactly do we need?

Welcome!

Need help with anything
Can some one explain about how the different dice work in the campaign
not really much to explain except you use different die for different things, D20 is for checking if you suceed in things, while D6 / D8 / D10 are mainly for attacks
Okay I get it now its for the actions your characters can do
D20 is used for attack rolls, skill checks, and saving throws. D12 is usually a damage dice - things like great axes. D10 is used for percentage (D100) rolls or damage dice. D8 used for damage dice. D6 for damage dice. D4 for damage dice as well (and healing potions).
yeah, in DNDB you can click certain values and it rolls said dice + any modifiers attatched to it, keep in mind some modifiers arent included in an attack roll like profiency
DM decides if a dice roll is needed and what roll type.
Alright thanks
Thank you
D100 is usually for tables and the dm
the only problem with being GMT is that EST times for me are generally really late, so when most parties play at around 5 PM EST its like gone 10 for me
Yea same with me I work most of the week and my free time is 7 to 11 eastern time
P.M.
Schedules and time zones and real life my friends - they are the worst monsters in any D&D game.
Followed by mismatched expectations causing drama at the table.
even worse than that one beholder, i swear
Dang
(in the middle of watching JoCat atm..)
enjoy it while you can
Facts
Hey
not yet thank you
Mk
just send a message here if you get ever get confused or stuck on anything 🙂
if all else fails go with the rule of fun 🙂
No
i've played pathfinder so im not 100% clueless, but still im quite dumb
Start with rolling your stats
okay...
And pick ur race and class
Have you read the basic rules linked in the pins?
uh...

Look at this
dnd and pathfinder have quite a few similarities so it should be quite easy for you to find your bearings
yeah i've heard so
the truth is i wanted to play a slimelike creature, and in pathfinder thats homebrew and its 90 something dollars
so i wanted to see this side of the slime
for what i've seen a slime race in dnd beyond is 2 bucks
Plasmoid
Yeah
I don’t have the book so
oh no, i dont think i have to buy the entire book
Oh
i can buy only the race
Feats are a separate thing from a playable race. You mean racial traits.
I buy books
To see and search this race's full details, unlock Plasmoid by purchasing Spelljammer: Adventures in Space on D&D Beyond.
counter argument im poor-er than the average fruit fly
Then you are limited to what you can afford or what is shared by your DM.
If u want a good variety of races get the players handbook and mordenkain’s book
This doc contains the playtest version of the plasmoid, which may not 100% match the final, but it should give you an idea: https://media.wizards.com/2021/dnd/downloads/UA2021_TravelersoftheMultiverse.pdf
oh nice
any recomended classes? or do i just go nuts like in pathfinder?
like in there you kinda make a character and foundry makes all the math, idk if thats a thing here or i actually have to read the books
Fighter, barbarian, and rogue tend to be recommended for new players as they have the fewest parts to manage. But anything is doable.
Hi!
hi
D&D Beyond automates much of the process for you, and the base classes are all free. Subclasses and races are extra money.
what does this mean?
Generate your ability scores either by rolling, using Standard Array, or Point Buy systems. I thought you played Pathfinder?
yea but we dont roll there, between race class and background you get points that make up your stats
Anyway, read the first four chapters of the Basic Rules on character creation.
It's actually advised to not roll the stats: standard array or point but are better.
my only weakness, reading
D&D is a game of rules, eventually you will need to read.
but if you roll you can get max on everything
not quite sure whats the max :p
This is why a lot of DMs have their players use Standard Array or Point Buy.
Which is actually pretty boring.
im personally a point buy person, allow you to flush out your build to a more specific degree while also having decision
Eh standard array is easier.
Read the rules.
okay dude calm down
sorry for being a newcomer in the newcomer channel, im gonna read the book
i guess
There's nothing to apologize for.
okay yeah most of it its really similar to what i know
Okay so take a 6 sided die if u rolling
roll it four times and drop the lowest?
yeah, i am currently watching a guide while i read
kinda interesting that my dice is not as dependant on what im using and instead depends on what i am
Do this 6 times and depending on your class and race and what it needs disperse them among ur stats
I would recommend rogue for a plasmid
Plasmoid
Which means u need dex and int highest
Strength and dex is damage
yeah dex on finesse
That’s incorrect.
what is
is it dex for stealth here too?
Stealth uses dex, yes
damn im trying to learn over here haha
Rogues generally want high dex, and then after that it depends on what else you want to do
well i would like to be good at not dying, so i can apply flat footed and- yeah that works different in this game right
No flat-footed in 5e.
Rogue u want dex highest and then either strength or int second
so how do i do sneak attack, is there sneak attack?
You can be a charming rogue for high Cha, some good skills like Investogation are Int, perception is a really good skill as well which uses Wis, if you plan in becoming an arcane trickster you want Int to cast spells
Yes
Sneak attack you get if you have advantage vs your foe, or there's an ally within 5ft of your foe
Once per turn
What
I think every class needs Con, personally.
Every character wants con, it just depends on how you want to prioritize
Please stop giving bad advise and let them read the rules
please stop fighting
absolutely not no
this is a lot funner than reading 37 books
Rogues want dex primary. Then you want either Int/Wis/Cha, depending. Then Con. Then the other two. Then Str last
Con isn’t important for anything besides hp and saving throws as a rogue
Generally*
Hp is a big deal
Need is a strong word. It can help, but it depends on your campaign
two of the most important things in combat encounters
Am I supposed to fill out the form with like your skill level and stuff that is online?
Rogues do tend to get pretty tankier later on with evasion and uncanny dodge, but without con they can't really last long in a fight if they are up close
i haven't done it or heard of it so no
If you don’t have a game or group yet, practice making a character and reading the rules are good ways to start.
It depends on how you are playing. You can make a dnd beyond character sheet and use that to play, or just have a paper character sheet if you play in real life
ohh they meant a character sheet? they mentioned skill level so i assumed it was a survey or smth posted here
I’m just trying to say what I know
I usually don’t focus on hp as a rogue
But I guess my mistake
When I play as rogue I usually don’t get in outright battle it kill the small things and check for traps and stuff that’s it
As this is the newcomer channel we try to stick to the basics and not what works after years of playing and experience
You dont have to focus, but for new players I don't believe the correct advice is to ever just dump con
could someone help explain the difference between int and wis? i’m just a litttttle bit confused (please reply and @ me)
Int is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to put tomato in a fruit salad
Intelligence, measuring reasoning and memory
Wisdom, measuring perception and insight
Soooo I’m brand new to this😅, I’m creating my character rn , can my character be half elf half fairy ?
Does anyone have a campaign I can join that is in gmt+2
So, mechanically, you would have to choose one or the other. There is not a way to do a half and half character. However there is a Custom Lineage race option, that you could use to represent that. It won't have most of the options from either, but if you just want to flavor your character as such, its the easiest way
im not sure if there's an official way to make that happen mechanically but if you pass it by your DM im sure they'll be more than happy to let you run that 🙂
Or you can ask your DM if you can work with them to make a custom homebrew race, which is always an option
Ok! Thank you ! I don’t currently have a dm but hopefully when I find a group itll be ok 😅
Just play a fairy
That's the easiest way tbh, and then just role-play them also being half elf
Okie dokie😊
hi! can someone please explain to me how rolls work? on all the dices xD i just started today with my friend group and i think we messed really bad today :/ I appreciate all the help!
Mm, can you clarify your question a little more? How dice rolls work in what capacity?
like how the rolls are how to deal damage and how to do spells mostly the whole PvE adventure (roleplayling and creation of mobs i got them ((I am the DM)) )
the player type of playing
That's more than one thing and not all of them relate to your original question of "how rolls work"
Weapons and spells say the damage dice that is used.
A dagger does 1d4 damage when successfully hit while a shortsword does 1d6 points of damage when successfully hit.
Spells do what the spell description says they do (need more context if you are trying ask something specific that occurred).
If you want DMing advice head on over to #dm-discussion
Have you read the basic rules thoroughly? Can you provide an example of something you think you might have done wrong?
say if i purchase the essentials kit on the US website, is it shipping for free in the UK?
because it does not say a shipping cost
Is this the WotC website?
dnd beyond
D&D Beyond doesn't sell physical books (except for the physical bundles at https://dndstore.wizards.com/us).
The channel is called Rules, how did you get to product sales questions ?
This is the #dnd-newcomers channel
This is newcomers my sibling in Asmodeus
It's probably cheaper if you buy it from the UK version of Amazone or your local gaming shop than shipping it from the US.
just checked on the physical bundle, doesnt seem like the ship to the UK
This is Wendy's...
Try the UK store https://dndstore.wizards.com/uk
Wizards definitely has a UK webstore. I was on it this morning
It should have redirected you.
And Jale beats me to it :p
Hello everyone! I'm new to the whole D&D scene, but a girl I'm seeing is getting me into it. One game I enjoy playing is League of legends, so I started watching a channel called Dorans and Dragons, which aims to provide builds that are similar to the characters you play in the game. I was hoping that someone might be able to give me some advice as to whether or not I could get away with playing something like the character Aphelios as a beginner
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/34411727/vba7se
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAVZi2zY1Xs&list=PLVG8138L_5Bjso52ZLEYYVPkiNDk-1T1N&index=90&ab_channel=Doran's%26Dragons
I've heard that artificers are one of the more complex classes in the game, so I saw some merit in possibly going a polearm sentinel character as a backup
I would very much recommend, as a newcomer, to not try and immediately jump in to trying to reproduce characters from other IPs
D&D is very much it's own thing, with it's own style, tone, and feel
This can make it very difficult to reproduce other IPs
That's fair, I wouldn't try to be carbon copying it per say, but I can understand that
My advice comes from the perspective of it often being easier to reproduce a character if you're familiar with the limitations of D&D
Totally understand, I'll probably role with my backup then and try to learn more that way
to be clear the rulebook in https://dndstore.wizards.com/uk/product/811478/dd-essentials-kit-digital-plus-physical-bundle is not the same as the players handbook
?
Nope, that's the essentials kit which is a boxed set with the basic rules and an adventure
The basic rules are the free version of the rules that doesn't have as many options as the Player's Handbook
Player's handbook is an expanded and more detailed version
You should be able to browse the Basic Rules here
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Hi guys. Complete newcomer here. I've recently been playing a game in a discord server where we had to do some role play and it made me finally want to dip my toes into the world of D&D. I will have a look at all the resources here over the next few days, so sorry if this is mentioned somewhere already but what are some good sites for newcomers to get an online game?
Anyone looking for an extra person? Never played but have role played for years. Figured joining as a player instead of a DM is best option for me
Check out #find-a-game
Hello, I have become interested in DND and wanted to start trying it out whenever I can, if anyone has any of the basic rules or a website they could send me, or if there is a game for newcomers please let me know, Thanks!

Always happy to host a one-shot or campaign for new commers
you can get an online die on google by simply searching “dice roller” or better yet dnd beyond which is a free app that you can make characters and buy books on
Thanks!

Dropped u a dm
Welcome what your timezone

Currently got one group forming for a game looking to fill up one for early gmt time but if I can fit in another est time game happy to dm it
What days? I work.
I work 7 to 530 Sunday to Wednesday. Mandatory Saturday. But, rare. I work for Amazon.

Because if I move they can still attack me on my turn?
Correct. If you're within five feet of a creature and move out of its melee range, it can use its reaction to attack you. That's called an opportunity attack.
Looking for players for Fridays new players welcome
You should post in #looking-for-players. The instructions are in #find-a-game.
Hey folks! Please don't use the regular channels to put together a group or game - we have our #looking-for channels for that. To learn how to use those #looking-for channels, please read (carefully) #find-a-game.
Hey
Hello - do you have a question?
@terse wind The Basic Rules are free, so if you'd like to try playing before you sink money into it, you can do so. But the Player's Handbook is the single most important book in the game if you are looking to buy one thing.
can druids scry? i can't see anything in dnd beyond
As in use the spell Scrying? Yes, they can
Hey guys so i NEVER played DnD and i want to start can yall help me ?

God there are so many things
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
You don't need to bother with Part 4.
I actually have a question. Can someone explain the stats?
What don't you understand about them?
Strength measures natural athleticism, bodily power
Dexterity measures physical agility, reflexes, balance, poise
Constitution measures health, stamina, vital force
Intelligence measures mental acuity, information recall, analytical skill
Wisdom measures awareness, intuition, insight
Charisma measures confidence, eloquence, leadership
what is the use of an instrument
A musical instrument? That depends. For a Bard it may serve as their spell casting focus
For anyone, a musical instrument could be used in conjunction with attempting certain actions such as distracting some guards with a musical performance, earning a stay at an inn or some extra coin with a stage/street show.
ok ty
I meant the + and - numbers
Like if INT is 0, are you stupid?
It means you lack intelligence. The mechanical effect of it on the game would be that you have a -5 modifier
The ROLEPLAY effect is up to you and the DM
No you’re incapacitated and cant really play that PC
There a rule somewhere about being reduced to 0 in any stat and what it does
Hmm..
Every table is different. Talk to your DM and table
I mean i dont have a table
in general, a new player making a starter character is unlikely to be “too powerful”; if you’re copying and pasting a power build from the internet, maybe yeah
when dont worry about it?
If you’re just testing character creation then, experiment away
Check #find-a-game
The channel above
Or in person at your local game store, university, library, check also facebook, meetup, warhorn etc
I played around 8 years ago and haven’t played since so I’m counting myself as a newbie. where is a good place to start coming back from such a long break?
Reread the free Basic Rules.
Ok I can do that. Thank you!!
Do you mean the int modifier or int score?
Does anyone know some easy to learn online table to services I tried roll 20 but couldn't figure it out
A virtual table top? There owlbear.rodeo (it's free)
Do you have dnd beyond??
Or website but yeah
Yes I do
I don’t see the relevance tho @carmine jolt, ddb isn’t a vtt
Yeah there is this super useful extension call beyond 20 so you don’t need to learn the roll 20 stuff
Oh that
Crazy
How do I find the extansion
You have to be using it on a chromium browser
It’s just a chrome extension
Oh
Super easy
Well thank u for the advice I will look up some videos on it
Yeah np I was on the same boat a couple months ago
Hi! I'm new to dnd and I really want to start playing
You have anyone you know to play with, or are you looking for someone online?
I DM and play, so if you want I could build a campaign or something
Could i join?
I mean yeah, would be just you and me. Recently lost my ddb account so I would need to write a whole new campaign too. I haven't played in about a year so I'm rusty
Anyone who wishes to join random people who don't know each other, I can take about four people
Ok as long as u dont mind me asking questions here and there 👍
No problem! I'll be checking the book nearly every turn either way. One question, do you use pen/paper or ddb?
Ddb
Cool. Makes it easier if I know what everyone uses
Tru
You mind if I take this to #looking-for-players
Ya bet
is there no "owned books" on DnD beyond?
Wdym?
like a section of all the adventures you own, cos i have to go scrolls through the whole catalogue to find it
You can go to this page and see which ones you have licenses for
https://www.dndbeyond.com/account/marketplace
hey everyone I'm new here and while I've watched a few campaigns I've not played dnd myself wonder if anyone could gimmie a little tour on what to do and what campaign to join

@tropic garnet Have a look at the basic rules linked in the bot post above
thanks
I never played either and would love to join a campaign, if you come across one!
Specifically the first four chapters on character creation
After you get a sense of the rules you can check out #find-a-game
sure thank u
i find it so impossible to make online character sheets if you dont already own every digital version of everything
You can buy individual playable race or sub-class for $2 each with D&D Beyond.
Is it possible to Twin Cast Crown of Stars? If so what would it do, double the motes or double the dmg of the after effect dmg of using a mote?
Twin spell meta magic?
Yes, sorry
Then no it needs to be single target spells only not range self
And no option to use it for the BA mote strikes I presume?
No
no, those arent you casting a spell
Gotcha, ty
if im invisible and move away from enemies, they dont know where im going, right?
They have ears
They can still hear you, and see any footprints you might be leaving in the terrain. If you don't want the enemy creature to know where you're going while invisibile, you should take the Hide action first.
That being said, a wide variety of actions and spells require the user to be able to see their target. Enemies wouldn't be able to take an attack of opportunity against you for example, if you were invisible when you left their reach.
unless you use the Hide action, enemies know your position
unless they dont have any senses except seeing I guess
ok ty
Hi
Yes “You can make an opportunity attack when a hostile creature that you can see moves out of your reach.”
Hello
Can you multi archetype like you can multi class?
Sub-class? You can only choose one sub-class from each class.
i'm a complete newbie haven't even played the game yet, though I did buy the essentials kit recently. Was hoping if someone would be willing to teach me and we'd have a blast along the way!
i wanna join too
count me in too, if y'all okay with a complete begginer
Same
I'd be down if its still open
wot can anyone of u , like tell me what happens
if I roll a 7
and I have reckless attack
If you are using Reckless Attack, you roll with advantage to attack during your turn. So you will roll twice and take the higher of the two rolls. The trade off is all attacks against you will also be made with advantage; but, that's about it for Reckless Attack
How can you get more than one feat
Feats, if being permitted, can be taken at every ASI level, the first being level 4. Instead of taking the ASI (ability score increase), you may instead take a Feat. Check individual classes to see when they obtain ASI levels after level 4 as some classes obtain them at different levels than others. Note, unless a Feat says otherwise, you may only take a Feat once. Within the description for a Feat, it will say if you may take it more than once and what restrictions there may be for doing so
@candid thorn good luck and have fun
how does the help action work in combat or is it purely for skill checks outside of combat?
It give advantage to the roll
even attack rolls?
Yes technically
cool thanks
@vale shell with attack however you don't help you flank the mob
Help action is more for non combat
yeah thats what i figured. any idea how to do this in roleplay?
Help can work in combat to give advantage and flanking is an optional rule so not at every table
Like searching for something or doing specific things
Same problem, wanna try to find one with me?
Thx
i mean how do you roleplay giving help to someone. like if the dm says to give a history check, how do i say in character, i want to give advantage to another player role? or is it just skipped normally?
Yes …
You can check yesterday I writed ur same message xD
Yes you just say you want to help them
lol
thanks. i believe, officially its not in the rules right?
I added u @solid bough
Flanking is an optional rule in DMG iirc
@tardy panther
thanks
FYI mods don’t like you trying to organise games outside the #looking-for-players channels
Hey folks! Organization of D&D games and groups are not allowed here - please use the #looking-for channels (see #find-a-game on how to use them) or take your organization to direct message. Thank you!
Sorry 🫡
Ok mb
okay so i'm having an existential crisis lol
i usually have one character that is my main character
i understand d&d has a lot of characters and characters die etc, but i really want to just have one main character
but i haven't found a long term home group campaign yet (only for p2e atm)
only been doing AL one shots
but i know now about the different tiers 1-4, so i'm trying to figure out what to do
in my local shop, they mostly do tier 2s & 1s, occasionlyyyy a 3, but never seen a 4 yet
i want to take my main to tier 4 & level 20 and mostly play that one
should i create a "main" tier 1, 2, 3, 4, thus having 4 different mains/options?
should i name it the same & just have different stats?
should i just stick with a t4 main and wait for t4s?
should i just make t1-4s to play around and learn different classes? I do plan on dming eventually
they also have occasional tier 2 homebrew one shots, complicating things even further
Im completely new to dnd, where should i get started, also if i create a character i would like it to use 3 swords as i want it to base it of ronaroa zoro from One Piece, dm me if u can help me get started :D.
i made a short 2m video on how to get started if you like i can dm it to you
#adventurers-league might have better advise if that’s what your playing
ok ty
Check out the pins in this channel for links to free basic rules and video guides
can you take an al character and move them to a campaign if i found a homebrew group later?
You may have to reset some lvls and equipment but that would be down to your DM
ahh ok tysm
What class would Moana and winnie the pooh
#character-discussion would be the place to ask
Ooo clicked the wrong one
Helloooo- I am new, could you tell me the best place to look for a campaign to join?
Oh- nevermind, I just saw the "find a game" tab, haha
There are tons of other places online if you get no joy in this specific server.
Hello! I'm going to college on a few weeks and DND is well known at said college.
i got into dnd at college a few years back! i would definitely recommend doing it
Do you think you could help me learn the ropes? That is... if you don't mind?
Is it common or even possible to use/ have a shield as an arcane focus?
It's not possible according to the Rules as Written.
Ty
And wonderful to see a fellow cleric!
if you'd like!! i'd definitely recommend watching some online campaigns to get to grips but if you have any questions feel free to ask c:
This is actually my WoW OC but I am in the process of editting his background story to fit.
Is there anyone who could help me and my friend with the basics of creating a character and starting a game?

what exactly do i add my proficiency bonus to?
To whatever you are proficient with, such as weapons, tolls and ability skills.
Your class and background typically determines what you are proficient in.
so if i have great weapon prof and my prof is +2, i add +2 to my two handed attack?
No, you are proficient in specific weapons not "great weapon"
Fighters are proficient in all Simple and Martial weapons, including a greatsword. So if you're wielding a greatsword, you would add your proficiency bonus when attacking with a greatsword (plus your Strength modifier).
ah i see, so i add +5 to an attack since my strength modifier is +3 and my prof is +2
Yes.
alright i got it now, thanks
That said, the weapon damage is the weapon damage plus Strength modifier but NOT proficiency bonus.
ah so for weapons its just +3 then
Yes, for damage.
but then if im proficient in intimidation i add my prof bonus to that?
since that isnt an attack from what im aware
Yes. Again you add your proficiency bonus to whatever you're proficient in — weapons, ability skill checks, saving throws, etc.
anything im proficient in except attacking, thanks again
how tf do i start playing im lost
I don't fully understand how to make a character card and if there are any rules about how to distribute the amount of points in stats
It includes attacks with weapons that you are proficient in as well.

yes
"?new" is a bot command, not a question.
oh so since im proficient in martial weapons (and battle axes since im dwarf) it does count?
Read the first Chapter of the free Basic Rules (linked above)
Yes. Martial weapons are a group of weapons that only certain classes are trained in.

Hi
Welcome
How r u
Fine
That's good
Do you have any questions? This channel is specifically for new-to-D&D folks get started. We have some useful resources in the pinned messages.
Nah I'm just looking around
not all druid circles are meant to provide spells, right?
I have a friend for that type of thing
The different circles provide different features - but druids are a prepared caster class and know all their spells but can only have a certain amount prepared each day.
Wild magic barbarians are just sorcerers but have a liking for melee weapons correct?
Not really - they're barbarians who's rage is influenced by wild magic and can have certain effects.
But they aren't casters.
More like they rage and magical effects happen.
