Then Xanathars and Tashas.
Adventure books are more for DMs to use with their groups.
But at the end of the day, pick what you think you'd enjoy most.
Don't get Spelljammer (coming from someone who got Spelljammer)
The book lacks a lot of the things required to get the system off the ground
That being said it does contain information
Just a lot less than it should
What Is Tasha’s cauldron of everything about? I saw from the preview in dnd beyond it unlocks artificer and a lot of magic item.
Tasha's is good
Tasha's offers the Artificer class (and its subclasses) as well as new subclass options for all existing classes, magic items, feats, and spells. It also offers optional features for existing classes to utilize (with DM approval)
it's highly recommended for a player to have for the variety it offers on top of the PHB
It was like a light rules refresh for the PHB and kind of codified a lot of homebrew rules into something that can be used at most tables with DM approval.
Alright thanks
Hi, I'm totally new to DnD and I literally have 0 knowledge about it, does someone have the time and patience to explain it for me? or better yet if there's a way to play it online while I get the explanation I need.

The hit dice is dependent on class. For the default classes it's:
d6 - Wizard, Sorcerer
d8 - Everyone else
d10 - Fighter, Paladin, Ranger
d12 - Barbarian
Is a concentration check a d20 and a 10 and above is a success?
Whenever you take damage while you are concentrating on a spell, you must make a Constitution saving throw to maintain your concentration. The DC equals 10 or half the damage you take, whichever number is higher.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Concentration
So there isn’t a concentration check; it’s a saving throw instead.
And a 10 or above might mean success, if you took 21 damage or less.
If you took 22 damage or more, you’ll have a higher DC.
So war caster only helps maintain concentration if its like a weapon or object hitting you not a spell
Not sure how you came to that conclusion.
War caster gives you advantage on concentration saving throws if you take damage.
Cuz it only gives you advantage on constitution saving throws for concnetration
Since it gives no requirements for the source of damage, then damage from any source qualifies.
Any damage you take will force you take make a constitution saving throw to maintain concentration for a spell you have active that requires concentration. War Caster does not differentiate between sources of damage, so you have advantage on any and all saves you make to maintain your spell from damage
Whether you’re damaged by a weapon or a spell or a trap or falling or anything else, you’ve still taken damage.
You therefore need to make a constitution saving throw if you’re concentrating on a spell, and if you have War Caster, you make that saving throw with advantage.
If War Caster was meant to apply only to damage from weapon attacks, it would have to say so.
Oh idk why I forgot some spells make you do constitution saving throws
that is different
I mean, some do, but that’s not the point I’m making here.
Some spells require concentration.
a spell that forces a constitution saving throw as part of the spell does not benefit from War Caster. Only for con saving throws you make to maintain your spell
To maintain those spells, you need to maintain your concentration.
If you take damage, from any source, you risk losing that concentration.
Hence: you have to make a constitution saving throw per the rules for concentration.
A spell could in theory have you make a constitution saving throw completely unrelated to concentration.
The result of that saving throw will not break your concentration.
If that same spell causes you to take damage, though, then you’ll still need to make a separate constitution saving throw to try and maintain your concentration.
If it doesn’t deal damage, you don’t.
As an example:
If you are targeted by the 4th level spell Blight, you must make a Constitution saving throw to determine if you take full or half damage.
The first Con save is made as normal (unless you have some seperate source of advantage or disadvantage). After you take the damage, you then make a second Con save to determine if your spell requiring concentration stays up or is dropped. If you have the War Caster feat, this second Con save is made with advantage
The amount of information you need to play this game is crazy
Just take it a step at a time. If becomes easier with time and experience; and no one expects you to know or remember all the rules. The rules will make sense with time
It's more when you're the DM
Hello
Hi
Is anyone doing any campaigns
You can find DMs looking for players in the #looking-for-players channel
Its more that you need a willingness to spend time reading and learning
how do i respond to a prompt in the looking for players channel
The thread underneath it
What are somatic components of spells
Spellcasting gestures might include a forceful gesticulation or an intricate set of gestures. If a spell requires a somatic component, the caster must have free use of at least one hand to perform these gestures.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#SomaticS
Maybe you have to wave your wand or trace some arcane sigil in the air.
It doesn’t go into specific requirements for individual spells, so you can describe it however you like.
The important part is just that you need a free hand.
(If the spell also has material components, you can use the same hand for both.)
In war caster it says “When a hostile creature’s movement provokes an opportunity attack from you, you can use your reaction to cast a spell at the creature, rather than making an opportunity attack. The spell must have a casting time of 1 action and must target only that creature.” Does that mean if I’m within 5 feet of an enemy, and then they move more than 5 feet from me I can cast a spell at them?
But they have to have been within 5 feet of me, and I only get 1 reaction until my turn passes
Yes
An opportunity attack occurs when a creature leaves your attack range
Your melee attack range specifically
So normally 5 feet
Where does it say how long your reach is or is every players reach 5 feet

Is shocking grasp generally considered good or bad
It’s a decent damage cantrip
it is a handy thing for a caster in a party w/out much frontline to have
Rather than spending your entire turn disengaging from an enemy that has gotten too close, you can instead cast shocking grasp. If you hit, you burn the creature's reaction, letting you move away unscathed
But you have to spend your action doing shocking grasp and then another to disengage but by that time they have their reaction back
“Next turn” means the turn after their next turn?
a spell or feature will specify if it is the start/end of the target's next turn or the start/end of your next turn
Hi ummm new to dungeons and dragons and I have a question for any dungeon masters that are available
Yeah what’s the question
Well, I think my dungeon master is a bit frustrated with one of us since he is a bard bad only using the vicious mockery cantrip and Well he is doing what the dungeon guide tells him for encounters but we are kinda lacking in damage....
We are a Me sorcerer, A bard A paladin and a Fighter,
We are having a discussion about having a healer since we sometimes can't kill the enemies fast enough so we end up taking a lot of damage, but I think my dm is frustrated because he doesn't want to kill us but can't figure out what to do
Do you have any advice?
I did suggest something but I think is a terrible idea and probably we will all die
Have a talk to the bard player about using spells other than vicious mockery
I’m trying to make a character but I can’t find the Tabaxi race is it not available?
It’s a paid race
ohhh
I think it’s about 2 dollars on its own
We tried but he seems to be set on not really casting any spells tho we are only lvl 5 so I get we have little spells but I will try to see, I don't really want the dungeon master to do my idea is very terrible, but ty
Well your dm could just make the encounters easier
But I would understand being frustrated if a player wouldn’t play their character properly
Do you have any suggestions you would prefer? To make them easier we are all new
I mean just by using weaker or less monsters
Really it is just a matter of getting comfortable with one's class and watching some helpful guides on how to play those classes. If your Bard is truly only using Vicious Mockery and nothing else, then yes, it is a hinderance since at level 5 they would have access to 3rd level spells
OK ty I will tell him to try that
Aye, sometimes it's easy to get locked into doing what seems easiest or safest, which cantrips can be a trapping like that. Online guides (video or article) can help explain how to do a bit more with a class without going into any sort of deep-ended optimization build
Is it a bad idea to multi-class cleric and ranger?
not necessarily. Both use wisdom for their spell casting and dex tends to be fairly universal so it can make for good synergy between the two classes. Is there something in particular you are looking for in this multiclass?
I’m new to dnd so I wanted to try something, thanks for the advice!
Just in case you think this is a good idea (wish is not), I suggested to separate us all like we got kidnapped and are in a dungeon and specifically have us deal with each of our weaknesses in a good role-playing format, example my character is very wise with an 8 and my character tends to be very coky have my character try to do something with will have to make my character have a humbling experience, our dragonborn fighter never looks for traps and always just barge in soo have him be in a corridor with a bit non fatal but harmful traps ect, the bard would be like to save someone he knows or is from his back story he would have to use his powerful spells. Is there an enemy that is immune to vicious mockery?
Also ty so much for the help
did he elaborate on why he only casts vicious mockery?
Is it because of the rp aspect of insulting ppl? Or is he just unwilling to learn to use any other spells.
I think I’ve made a mistake
Dragonborn works best with charisma and strength but I picked cleric and ranger because I didn’t know, should I change it?
It depends. If you are building a character for the sake of fleshing out an idea, you can utilize the optional rule presented from Tasha's that lets you choose your starting level ASI rather than going with the preassigned one (if the race you are using has a preassigned ASI like Dragonborne does)
While it is up to a DM whether they allow this or not, it is not inherently a radical optional feature/rule; but, still a point to consider when making a character in case you have or come to have a DM that does not allow the optional rule from Tasha's regarding starting ASI
you can use the version of the dragonborns from fizbans treasury of dragons. They have floating racial ASIs
Ohhh okay thanks guys!
Prestidigitation says you can create sensory effects like musical notes does that mean you can make any noises like make it sound like someones voice or like it sounds like its raining outside?
I don’t think you can make voices
It’s like a single instantaneous sound I think
Let me check
Thinking Minor Illusion or Thaumaturgy might be more in line with doing something like that, though still limited in scope
hi
Wouldn’t rain sounds and whispers be a sensory effect tho
i've never played an actual game of D&D but want to start playing.
Mage armor wouldn’t be good for warlock because they wear light armor right
Actually Mage Armor can be good, especially if as a Warlock you take the Armor of Shadows invocation. The best light armor (before touching any sort of magic items) do for you is 12+dex modifier. Mage Armor is 13+dex modifier.
Might want to take this to #character-discussion
But I wear light armor and it says you touch a creature not wearing any armor
This is a conversation better suited to #character-discussion so if you wish to discuss it further, I'd be happy to do so down there
I'm new

ah
There we go
thank you very much :D
Also check out #dm-discussion - a great place to ask questions and get advice from other DMs
okay, thank you
Being a DM is a different kind of way to play D&D - I find it lots of fun!
i am aware how dnd kinda works
i watched lots of slimecicles stuff
which is why i got into it
Yeah you don't have to have all the rules memorized - rather you need to have a decent idea of the game mechanics and know how to look up rules as needed. I'd also recommend starting by running a prewritten adventure so you can get a feel for how an adventure is set up - also saves you time from having to create everything. The Lost Mines of Phandelvar adventure is free on DnDBeyond and it's a good "new to D&D" adventure you can use.
Hey! How do I start playing dnd?
I always thought it would be fun to play but i never tried it
what?

There we go, bot was on coffee break.
So above there are some links that can help get started, mostly being the free basic rules. You do not need to to read all of these before a game, but having a basic idea of how to make a character and how combat works can really speed things up when you get a game.
yeah i bought the "dnd starter set" a while back
but never got to actually play dnd 💀
Oh, so are you hoping to play in person or online? Starter set is good for when you want to get a bunch of friends together and one of you DMs the adventure.
My friends dont do "things like dnd"
I downloaded roll20 this morning but I really dont know what im doing
Hello
On mobile? the Roll20 app? 'fraid to say the app on phones is.. really bad. Roll20 is better on PCs.
The starter set as a physical set is dice, basic rules + an adventure (Used to be Lost Mines of Phandelver, I think it Stromwrack isle now).
I believe lost mines is also free on D&Dbeyond.
Sadly you can't redeem these on roll20, so would either need to manually remake the maps and sheets (doable), or rebuy the adventure on roll20 to run.
somewhere in a channel here there's #find-a-game and a #looking-for-players channels. those are good places to find a group that you can play with, and many of the DMs will be open to newcomers.
Hello all, looking for some advice for our campaign to make it a little easier
hi
#dm-discussion if youre the dm, might help best
I'm a player
So what’s the problem in your campaign?
I just needed some info on a blink hound, like what it can all do and can't do it's uses and limits
Do you have a blink hound or are you fighting one
Our barbarian was gifted one as a pet, and with the predicament we are in, I was wondering if it was able to transport people or entity's a short distance of maybe 10-15 feet?
Wellllll, it's technically not a party member per say, more like a temporary alliance with a docile flesh golem in a pit
Hey guys im new to Dnd i need help learning how to be a DM. Does anyone wanna hop on a discord call and help me be a DM ( we can text if you don't wanna call)
Head on over to #dm-discussion to ask for advice. I would recommend that over an one-on-one with a stranger who may give you bad advice...
Hello everyone, I’m new to dnd and am quite overwhelmed with all of the components relating to dnd and all of the different ways to play. Does anyone have any recommendations to start with? Like, starting with character building or start with some research, etc?

Thank you so much!
Building a character is a good place to start, and can be quite fun, yeah. I personally started by watching youtube videos of other people playing the game, to get a feel for what it would be like. Reading the basic rules is also very helpful, if a little overwhelming sometimes. You can take it piece by piece though. You don't need to know about stuff like travel pace or jump distance just to roll some dice and have fun
Sounds great, thanks for the help :)) I’ll definitely spend a bit of time browsing for a campaign to watch and looking at the base rules and such.
Lol very nice.
The usual big and fancy campaigns I see recommended around here are Critical Role and Dimension 20, but there are plenty of great smaller-budget ones to watch all over the place!
Can i play DnD fully digitally without paying? Idk how it works so an easy version would be nice, i looked around on the interner but i didnt find any website that looked good. I will be playing with 2(or 3) other ppl.
Yes you can, the basic rules are free
Check out this message
Yup! What Davyd said. The basic rules are free. Everything you need to play and run the game can be found in there.
As far as getting access to all of the options for free? Generally no. Much of the additional content must be paid for unless it is shared with you by someone who already owns the books.
why cant i see drow on character creation?
heya
Do you just have the basic rules?
idk this is on the online thing
If you’re on D&D Beyond and haven’t bought or had content shared with you then you’ll only have access to the content in the basic rules. Drow are not in the basic rules.
ok tyvm
saving throw DC means Dice Check?
Difficulty Challenge
You need to roll the number equal to or greater than the DC to successfully save.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#SavingThrows
Here I thought it meant dungeon cookies... jk ❤️
since eldritch blast says to make a spell ranged attack but power word kill doesnt that means I need an attack roll on eldritch blast but not on pwk, correct?
Correct! DnD spells are nice because they do exactly what they say they do
No need to make any assumptions!
ok ty!
im looking at my warlock character sheet rn, my only action rn is an unarmed strike but i have a yklwa
Make sure to equip your equipment - click the box next to the item to equip it - it should fill in to indicate it’s equipped.
with the command spell can you literally command something to off itself?
Nope! If you read the spell it says it can't cause the creature harm
oh i read it as if its undead, cant understand your language and doesnt harm it. I thought it was way too specific at that time
turns out its either
so if you are checked for eg a dexterity check you throw 1d20? and then another dice for dex?
If you make a Dexterity check, you roll a d20 and add your Dex bonus.
cant post images here?
No, you can link to images, provided you explain what you're linking to.
im just trying to show my character sheet
Do you have it on D&D Beyond? You can link to that. Otherwise, you'd upload it to a site like Imgur and link it.
where it has your stats on the top of the sheet, with +1s and etc are you referring to those as bonus?
Yes, there's your Dex score and your Dex bonus (typically between -5 and +5).
Those numbers are referred to in the rules as ability score modifiers.
So if something says to add your dexterity modifier, you add the one for dexterity.
does the rulebook explain all this with images?
A lot of it is text, though there are video explainers like Handbooker Helper.
There's an interactive example sheet here that briefly explains what each field is for.
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources
Very cool. Are those new additions?
The nature of rules is that they are by default in text.
If you want something more digestible than reading I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
The modifiers themselves are explained here:

ty guys
About a year old, I think.
I've never seen them before. Good to know they're there. Thanks for putting them on my radar!
My favorite things on that page, though, are "What To Do On Your Turn" and "Glossary of Common Terms".
Lots of useful stuff to show folks, for sure.
I'll add that to my Sticky Note!
Doh they copy/pasted the "Hide" description into "Help" on the what to do on your turn page
"We're in the middle of a fight! Why are you hiding behind that box?!"
"I'm HELPING."
Excerpted from actual gameplay.
where would be the best place to get involved into a dnd campaign? i'm extremely new to everything so any help would be appreciated 🙃
#find-a-game has instructions on using the server's Looking for Group/Game channels.

Hi guys
Hello and welcome!
Hi
I've got like no friends interested in dnd and am just starting out whats the best way to find a group as a player
Check out #find-a-game
can you add booming blade to a sneak attack action (arcane trickster)
Sneak attack isn't technically an action.
But if you take the Cast a Spell action to cast Booming Blade, it is possible to also meet the requirements for sneak attack.
You'd need to be using a finesse weapon, like a rapier or a dagger.
And you'd need to have advantage on the attack or have an ally next to the target.
But it's definitely doable.
how is intelligence useful in dnd?
A very good question
Outside of being the casting stat for Artificers and Wizards? Intelligence is useful if you want your character to be knowledgeable whether that deals with magic (Arcana), knowing the past in detail (History), or having a working understanding of the faiths of people across the land (Religion)
okay thank you!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Intelligence
Covers this in detail as well as some examples for uses for Intelligence beyond Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, and Religion checks

Hello everyone ! I've just started playing D&D for the first time a couple weeks ago and I'm completely hooked ! =D
Woo!
Hi, I'm new to D&D and i'm excited to see how things go.
is the finger of oblivion charm good or is the possible 0 hit point thing make it not worth it
Hey how are y’all doing? So I got into painting dnd figures and my current project is an adult red dragon that I have named infernocus. I am currently in the making of mountain diorama for him as well. I’m quite proud of it

Not realy a #dnd-newcomers question, maybe try #dnd-discussion #character-discussion or #1029833015423143957 > Curse of Strahd
Just wait until you commit your first crime!
I’m playing a rogue for my first campaign and we just hit level three, I’m thinking of taking the phantom subclass (my dm recommendation) but I’m using Roll20 and I’m not sure how to add all that stuff and abilities into my character sheet. Do I have to type it all by hand? Is there a way to automatically add it all?
Yes - also you'll likely get better help in #third-party-tools-archive or even via the Roll20 support forums.
Oh thank you ♥️
Hello just joined the server I've started to pickup interest into DND because of baulders gate 3 is coming out Tomorrow and Wondering if this is the server to talk about that game and possibly find a DND group
This server is for the tabletop game primarily

when u start another spell requiring concentration, you lose concentration on other spells, correct?
yes
ok ty
crimson rite and blood malidict last for multiple turns right?
when using invisibility on multiple targets, are we all visible until every target has been touched or can I turn invisible first and invisibly turn others invisible
As a bonus action, you can activate any rite you know on one weapon you’re holding. The effect of the rite lasts until you finish a short or long rest.
Blood maledict doesn’t have a duration itself; that depends on your chosen curse.
of the marked
Since it’s a touch spell, you need to be able to touch them at the moment you cast the spell.
You’re not able to add targets afterward.
so we all instantly turn invisible?
You touch them all when you cast the spell, and you all turn invisible at that moment.
You can’t walk across the room and then touch someone after the spell has been cast.
also uh, it this somewhat accurate? (We're all lvl 3 and are at risk of a tpk if things go wrong). I have 2 superiority die and my dm was cool enough to let me take a fighter class fighting style.
Turn 1:
Blood maledict (no turn)
- Blood curse of the marked (1d4) (-1d4 hp?)
Crimson rite (bonus action) - 1d4 fire (-1d4 hp)
Green Flame Rapier (action) - 1d8+2
Turn 2 (wait for a miss):
Riposte (reaction)
- Green Flame Rapier?
Precision attack (action) - Green Flame Rapier
Hex (bonus action) - 1d6 necro
correct, Thats the most accurate way to go at it. Greenflame blade is a good cantrip as long as you have another enemy within 5 feet otherwise not as effective.
If you arent wearing a shield you could also as a BA on turn 3 to use an off handed weapon attack, if you have a short sword or dagger itll only deal 1d4/1d6 weapon damage but itll also proc hex at that point since its every attack
So In total It should be
1d8+1d4+2
r2 1d8+1d6+1d4+2
r3 1d8+1d6+1d4+2 and 1d4/1d6+1d6 damage if you are trying to be as optimal as possible
I think we’ve sailed beyond the warm waters of #dnd-newcomers here. 😛
Here be dragons, which means it’s probably a better topic for #character-discussion or #optimization.
gotcha thx!
We just don't have the bandwidth/time to teach folks one on one. I'd recommend reading/viewing the resources in the pinned message here in the channel and then try your hand at making a character, watching some folks play D&D *YouTube or Twitch D&D livestreams/video on demand) and the find a group to play with.
oh ok, ty
how does multiclassing work?
When you level up you can choose to put the level into a different class instead
Don’t worry about it at this point
It’s pretty complicated and easy to mess up
Is a dexterity check a dexterity check or a dexterity modifier check
Wdym by that?
Checks are rolling a d20 and adding the related ability modifier to the roll
If it’s a specific skill check and you have proficiency in that skill you add your proficiency bonus as well
So initiative is whatever you roll for the d20 + your dex modifier
Correct
Your initiative modifier on the character sheet is just your Dex modifier
hey guys i am new ot character creation, i wanted to make some kind of weapon wielding class merged with magic, like make sword magician or maybe a character who is mainly a paladin or fighter and put heavy into offesive magic, any idea of class combinations to use and race?
By “magic”, do you specifically means spells?
The only fighter that gets spells is Eldritch Knight, but there’s a few others like Rune Knight or Echo Knight with other kinds of magical abilities.
All paladins have magical abilities, both spells and otherwise.
Swords bard, hexblade warlock, or bladesinging wizard could also fit what you’re looking for.
basically what I am looking for is someone that fights with magic in their weapons and it a bit tanker then most , i think carrying around a flaming sword sounds so cool or someone who wields magic weapons
Paladin
Literally just Paladin
Martial with some magic, is a tank, can literally channel divine power through their weapon
gotcha ty 🙂
Ranger would also fit, they are often seen as ranged based but can be build to fight ijn melee as well
and you get a wide range of bonus action spells that do something magical with your attacks
very new to D&D, looking for people to talk to and learn more about the game.
i know a bit, i might be able to help with general things
great! would you mind if i messaged you sometime with some questions? its close to midnight where i am and i need to get up early
sure thing
thanks

I've posted on there, both my own post and proactively seeking DM's but I don't seem to get much success!
Was asking more for tips that DM's look for in their players
A basic understanding of the rules and a willingness to embrace the story always helps,
And to have fun
Be a team player and pay attention to what’s happening on other people turns
Just takes time
Tips have an idea of what your story is not so much as where it goes but have key points your pcs should be and remember the villain is always growing and moving his plan
I have a pretty fleshed out story for my character, really excited to play him! But left him open ended so that he really is just looking to join an adventure
Thats good gives your DM (when you find one) something to work with
I posted my backstory in #character-discussion so maybe I can get it properly fleshed out to give the DMs some confidence
Maybe I come across too desperate hahaha am just so keen to get on it
It already is very fleshed out in my opinion
I’ve just read it back story looks good, you’ve not made you’re self too powerful in it. you’ve got an origin and a reason to be out in the world
I really wanted to try and make myself as malleable as possible! But if anything is too OP I want to reduce it, want to make it satisfying to get to those high levels (if i dont die) and then actually be powerful
so if you purchase the players handbook you get more subclasses and backgrounds?
and the other stuff too
?
Yeah
what this then underneath the rulebook it says add to cart all those things?
or the handbook
You can buy each item from it individually
what if you purchase only the physical edition?
You get the full physical edition book
?books
There are five ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full book from the marketplace
- Purchase individual elements from the marketplace (options can be found within the book description)
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from dndstore.wizards.com
- Join a campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
yes but what of those subclasses and stuff?
You will find the same subclasses in the physical Player's Handbook as in the physical one
The difference being if you buy the physical book, you won't have access to the content on D&D Beyond
ok thats what i wanted to know, ty
Firstly, we have #find-a-game for finding/setting up sessions. You don't do that here
That’s not how leveling a character work
Secondly, you don't need to level up a character through play if you need them to be a specific level
You just make them at that level
naw man that cheatign lol
No it's not
lol whatever
i just know alot of new ppl who play never make it out the charecter sheet
If you need a character to be level 5 for example to join a campaign, you just make a level 5 character
Lots of games start at level 3 or 5, because that's when major class and subclass abilities kick in.
You don't need to make a level 1 character and level them up to 5 elsewhere
i get that i really do
That's also why one of the most popular DND YouTubers is called XPtoLevel3
The only exception I believe is Adventurer's League but you can verify that over in #adventurers-league
but me and my buds dont really play like that and this class has a homebrew that i feel more comfortable messin w it startin at lvl 1 rather than 3
im pretty proud of makin it to
Okay, well that's beyond the scope of this channel, which is for getting help with the basics
so when you purchase the digital handbook, how do you recieve it? PDF through email? DnD beyond already has it?
hello
Once you purchase it, you'll be able to access it via D&D Beyond or download it to the D&D Beyond app
You can see how it works with the free Basic Rules and free adventure Lost Mine of Phandelver
does this server have online matches? or is purely just discussion?
It's purely discussion
and D&D doesnt have 'matches'
That's not really how it works
Both in terms of what things are called (usually a 'session', often as part of an adventure or campaign) and in terms of the fact that a game of D&D is something played at a time often scheduled days or sometimes weeks in advance
In fact, the day that my group plays, Wednesdays at 1930, was scheduled years ago
I honestly find experiencing the game first like on a practice room to be better at explaining how to make a character than a lecture/ txtbk.
any idea where i can find an online session for dummies lol

ey thanks 👍
hello everyone
Hello friend. 😉
🙂
What is dnd and beyond for?
It's a digital toolset and marketplace for D&D
You can buy the official books in digital format and have them integrated with the character sheet app
You can also roll on your character sheet, share those rolls with other players and a DM in a campaign, and run combat encounters using the combat encounter tool
There are also homebrew tools to let you integrate your own D&D creations into the tools offered
it's a really handy tool to make characters
Thanks!
Are there any good images of the Bard Musical Instruments? Beyond app is not helping.
What you after exactly cause your instrument can look how ever you want it to
Just looking for pictures of the instruments and potentially sounds
Google image search and YouTube for people playing them is prob your best bet
So this might be a dumb question. But yall actually just find groups of randoms online to play with remotely? Don't get me wrong more power to you. But I just can't imagine finding a group of strangers online and agreeing to jump in a Skype call every week and roleplay a dwarf. That feels like it's gotta be super uncomfortable unless it's with friends.
you could just google the names.
Trying too, but Google's algorithm shows popular hits, and not necessarily D&D instruments.
Kinda feel like a lute is a lute
what instrument are you looking for?
If youre not choosing a lute. I found a obsidianportal that helped with descriptions. Thanks.
because generally, the instruments in dnd are the same as their IRL counterparts
I understand that, like I said Google search results are not helpful when they're showing businesses instead of the actual instrument.
there might be something broken with your google image search
because all I get are images of actual instruments if I search on google
ive been wanting to get into dnd for a while but from the surface it seems complex to get into, can someone help me with it?
have you tried searcing "instrument [name]" like "instrument lute"
Have a look at the pins in this channel for links to free rules and video guides
thanks, ill send a message here if i have any more inquiries
@gilded plank Here are some resources:
- While geared for younger audiences, does a good job chunking it down https://ymiclassroom.com/lesson-plans/dd/
That YouTUbe is by D&D 3 minutes and breaks the game into 3 phases
I also recommend way more than the official dnd channel Imo.
Check out One Shot Questers.
https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU AND ALSO WASD20 CHARACTER CREATIONS
ill watch the video and a couple other resources in the pins, thanks again
I don't have any friends that are willing to play with me so I'd end up playing with strangers anyway
it's always gonna be awkward at first you just gotta take that leap that's how you make friends
from what i got from that video the core of it is:
DM says your situation
you make your decision
you roll for wether it works or not and to what effectiveness
Yeah that is the bare bones mechanics.
It gets creative with your characters, how you want to play and such.
ill look through the like 10 chapters of the basic rules now as i assume that covers some more in depth things
yeah ill need to tackle character creation which is gonna be hell
yeah i heard about dnd beyond so ill use that
is there any other resources ill need?
Pen paper and a sense of humour
Basic Rules will get you through, and what @fresh fable said.
yeah ill read through the basic rules now and then ill try and make a character or choose a preset one
@gilded plank Do both! Its to be fun and chill. And come back if you have questions on character ideas, or anything else.
also whats the average length of a dnd campaign or whatever they call it?
It can vary to a "one shot" adventure that can last 1-2 hours, or repeated quests and storylines lasting years with custom campaigns.
ah so you can do like a campaign spanning like a week with multiple oneshots acting as missions?
You could with the DM. D&D is really to be whatever you want it to be. As lomg as its fun and enjoyable for everyone at the table playing.
yeah, ill read over the rules now
Check out the #find-a-game space to see of anyone is running a beginner adventure to help you get your feet wet. Those games are meant to help new adventurers get their stripes in.
ok i have a character concept from reading less than a paragraph, a courageous dwarf who punches the hell out of people using some cestus
Sounds good. Monk type?
maybe, dont exactly know what monks do though
Or maybe a Dwarf Fighter with a fear of swords or axes so they resort to their fists?
Its a great concept, and let that guide through your first character
i kinda just want to be like senator armstrong, abs so strong swords shatter on impact
like their mentality is "swords are too complicated, just punch them"
if you get what i mean atleast
Yeah, could be a Dwarf Barbarian. Such a beast in combat, and goes berserk.
Which ever you choose its all good.
yeah, anything that includes a fist im down for as i have had an odd attraction to the cestus weapon type recently
LOL, Senator Armstrong in D&D would be a great character. LOL
Also be a great adventure plot. Finding out some leader is behind evil stuff and is so strong, and not some frail senator.
or you playing as armstrong and your motive is "i want to make (country) great again!"
while i read the rules ill go through the character creation process
oh also regarding character creation should i do quick build?
It's been a long time since I played d&d
Me and some friends have just started playing. We've played a couple of mini campaigns as none of us have really played dnd or its been a long time since some have played dnd
Nice! I'd love to play with you guys some time.
Hello 🙂
Not a problem we have a discord that is the dungeon we're playing in, it kinda cool, once I chat to you some more I'm sure I will be able to invite you in
We're still figuring out the basics lol, just wondering what time zone are you on
Check out #find-a-game for how to find a game
Thank you Davyd
OK my timezone is GMT+1 might be a lil difficult to meet up on time
try to look for games on weekends. if you dont mind playing in the morning, you can play with americans
🦆!
Sounds good, once I get use to more of the play then I'll definitely look into finding some people on here to play d&d with
anyone able to lend some eyes for my backstory please, (first hero, pure new to everything)
Post in #character-discussion perhaps?
Birds fall out of the sky when they hit the colllision box of the map. 😉
Collision box?
Flying is just like walking but in three dimensions. You can move as far as you want.
It was a video game joke.
Yup, assuming you’ve got an open sky.
Just hope something doesn’t knock you down, and make sure your party and DM are cool with the idea of you just leaving a fight.
I’ve honestly never played but have been interested in getting into it
Isn't that kinda op if I can just snipe people with spells from above?
Your DM will definitely have counter measures in place if that is your go-to strategy
People below can simply snipe you with spells from below 🙂
Afternoon
But melee characters
Sure, a wolf won't ever be able to hit you if you're flying 50ft in the air
But as Lionn said, it only takes 1 combat encounter where that happens before you stop seeing wolves and start seeing bandits with bows haha
This is why some DMs don't allow flying playable races at low levels.
Are we able to play campaigns on this server?
Can flying units fly forever or do they get tired
I assume if they fly using a biological component like wings then yes
A monster statblock will say if there are limitations (if any) to a monster's flying speed.
Ok ty
^
No, this server doesn't host games.

made this character, is it decent? https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/105653019
Those stats look just fine!
what is the range of sight
ill check
edit: dont know how to check
thank you!
oh wait forgot to manually do the hit points
As far as your character can see based on the environment, light condition, and/or weather.
Don't worry it. Your DM should tell you if it's important (most of the time the PCs are indoors)
actually making hp manual seems difficult so nevermind
ok ty!
does drawing/stowing a weapon use up an action?
pretty sure it doesnt
Drawing a weapon is part of your Attack Action.
If you have a weapon already in your hands you can drop it for free and draw another weapon as part of that Action.
can you stow a weapon and take out your spellcasting focus?
does anyone know a fun oneshot adventure thats short but still has exciting elements to it? / how do i throw together a nice short adventure as a little just-for-fun thing? / what was you people's first session all about?
Im not a dm but I’m playing a one shot where you have to find a mystery of a mayor
do tell more
Stowing would be an Use an Object Action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#UseanObject
and like the mayor is like hiding gold and treasure but people say it’s folk tell but the party has to break into the mayors place and find out if the myth is true
sounds fun, is it like a thing thats available online or was it made up by the dm ?
ahh it does give me inspiration tho thanks
No problem and yeah we aren’t finished with it rn but I hope you find more interesting ideas
how do i caclulate damage?
roll for melee attackw ith weapon?
is it (damage of weapon)+(Ability mod)?
ok ty
does anyone know if one DND character sheets are different than 5e character sheets?
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Nope cause that’s not a thing till some point in the future
The DMG has the stats for firearms.
hm ok
Cure wound does what the spell says, a bullet will cause a certain amount of HP damage
Cure Wounds will heal whatever hit point damage, regardless of the source.
I mean thanks like that’s the only healing spell I got for my cleric
Cure Wounds can regain an amount of lost hit points, and each time you take damage you lose an amount of hit points. You'll have to do the math on each of those figures
Damage in DnD isn’t like taking damage IRL
Yeah they did 30 dmg in total to me
does using green flame blade prevent me from using the second attack from thirsting blade for a hexblade warlock
Yes
green flame blade is a spell.
To cast it, you use your Action to Cast A Spel
thirsting blade gives an extra attack when you take the Attack Action
always think in terms of which Action you are taking
Many abilities and features are keyed to a particular action, so start there
How much damage in total you think my flame axe should do since rn I’m making a thing about it
The weapons stats tell you what damage it does
There’s no “should” about it
Is it an item you're making up? Check out #homebrew ! They're experts at crafting new items
this might be a weird question, but are there any easy campaigns out there for just 2 people (DM + 1 PC)? (even better if I can access it for free 🙈)
I really enjoyed the one game I played with my bf and his friends and would like to learn how to DM, but the rules are still very opaque to me, and my brain learns best trial-and-failure-style 😅 I asked my sister if she would like to play, but she‘s also a newbie and I don‘t want to overwhelm either of us
Most adventures are written for about 4 PCs in mind. One PC is unlikely to survive an adventurer without help of sidekicks.
Free Adventures
Lost Mine of Phandelver is now free on D&D Beyond. It was written for new players and DMs in mind:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
Here's a list of free adventures:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/43718-list-of-free-dnd-campaigns
thanks, I‘ll check it out for when I have more experience 🙂 but my first game will definitely be just my sister, I‘d just feel most comfortable that way 🙈
https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?filters=0_0_0_45752_0_0_0_0&src=fid45752 might be some free one player campaigns here
thank you!
depends, what do you need?
What help are you looking for specifically?
what for then?
We have a whole channel for DMs to share tips and tricks: #dm-discussion.
If you have a question about the game, you'll probably have better luck by simply asking the question.
its a bit hard situacion
Just ask the question
in my country like noone plays the game, but i found some friends which wanted to play, but im only one who knows english well, so i had to DM and i need soe tips
i dont know some rules
dnd is so complicated br
See, now those are things we can help with.
ty
Is there a specific rule that's giving you trouble?
What about it specifically is troubling you?
when to make players lvl up
There's two main methods for determining when players level up.
If your group is using experience points, then the players level up whenever the reach a certain total number.
certain total number?
The table here shows how many experience points you need to reach each level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
alr
The other (and arguably more common) option is to ignore experience points altogether.
and how can i tell how much exp points they managed to get
i like that one
That's called milestone leveling, and you typically just have them level up whenever they complete a major event in the story.
simple = more fun
i like that
Each monster rewards a certain amount of XP based on their CR (it will be listed in their monster statblock) when the PCs defeats them (not necessarily kill)
I personally really like and recommend gold from the dungeon is exp.
1gp to 1exp.
It's fun if your game revolves around treasure hunting over combat.
If anything I encourage you to experiment and see what works for you!
Exp is the primary mechanical motivator for your players so think on what exactly you would like to reward with a level up.
That's not one I've heard of before. 😂
It's old-school lol
That's an old school AD&D method. Perhaps not bring that up and confuse new players even more.
thats all good but, they're playing first time and they barely know rules
How is that confusing?
Not RAW in 5E.
Okay but it's an option and they can and should experiment
But yeah, if simple is what you're after, then the simplest option is to just tell your players to level up whenever you like.
They are the dm and it could make their game good regardless
i literaly have to translate EVERYTHING
They beat their first dungeon? Level up.
They uncovered the campaign's sinister plot? Level up.
can i consider main quest as doing avanturist quest or smthing?
Sure
like slaying goblins
There is a lot of nuances to exp or milestone and no one expects you as the dm to do a perfect job
Whatever you think is right, you're the DM so follow your gut
how does spellcasting schools work?
ur right
The schools don't have any special rules of their own.
But other features in the game may refer to them.
u just choose school and u can learn spells from only that school?
I believe detect magic has descriptors on different schools
As an easy example, an evocation wizard can add evocation spells to their spellbook at half the normal cost.
Beginning when you select this school at 2nd level, the gold and time you must spend to copy an evocation spell into your spellbook is halved.
And when they cast an evocation spell, they can protect certain creatures from it.
When you cast an evocation spell that affects other creatures that you can see, you can choose a number of them equal to 1 + the spell’s level.
bro u know so much stuff
Just ask what your players are actually planning on bringing to the table for characters and learn those classes
We've been in the hobby for a while
you will learn a lot too
Spam is very wise, but it just comes from playing and knowing where to look in the rules. No one has it all memorized.
An evocation spell on its own, though, is treated the same as any other spell.
Hmm
Have you read through the free Basic Rules yet?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
That covers everything you need to know to play.
My point was that if you don't have the book yourself, the Basic Rules are the next best thing.
For example, you can find the schools of magic explained here:
The schools of magic help describe spells; they have no rules of their own, although some rules refer to the schools.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#TheSchoolsOfMagic
how can a character decrease other's saving throws?
Bane would do it, for one.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/bane
any cantrips?
Mind Sliver
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/mind-sliver
Hello everyone just wanted to say hi and that I have always wanted to play D&D, but none of my friends were into it. So here I am 18 years later to check things out.
Welcome!
bro has almost same story as me
Just an in-person one with in-person friends.
But there's lots of games out there if you're looking for one to join. #find-a-game has instructions.
@smoky adder off topic are you from Hawaii (because spam)
Nah. Never been. 😅
Lol just curious, they love that stuff there, highly recommend!
when dual wielding, can you throw 2 light weapons?
If they have the thrown property, yes.
Yes, you may.
The rules for Two-Weapon Fighting state it explicitly:
If either weapon has the thrown property, you can throw the weapon, instead of making a melee attack with it.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#TwoWeaponFighting
ok ty
Didn’t you ask the same thing a few days ago?
oh wait yeah i forgot
The answers are in the rules. Dont be afraid to read them multiple times.
ok ty
hi
if you manage to reduce an enemy who is important who is meant to take death saving throws and the spell is finger of death, the spell waits for the character to fail the sasving throws and then turn them into a zombie, correct?
That's more of a #dnd-rules question.
ok ty
So I am playing a wizard and I have a familiar, and I wanted to talk a bit about it and how it's balanced
It's definitely very powerful for a first level spell if you run it as written, and even more so if your DM is lenient, so I'm a bit afraid of abusing it even though I also love to use it all the time
As far as I can tell, the familiar can use the help action, and that's really useful when exploring a dungeon, and am owl cam scout by itself pretty much
So then don't? I think it's easy to forget that the DM is a player too. This is just my very personal take, but I suggest not always making the optimal choice so that the DM's fun isn't compromised either.
I did talk to the DM and they have no complains so far and nothing really that I should change (it's still pretty early too)
Then that's good!
I'd recommend keeping that line of communication open just in case feelings change as the game progresses.
More specifically, I asked for guidelines on handling the familiar and they said they would notify me if there's anything wrong.
That sounds like good due diligence, honestly.
And I also said I was worried about that
But still, I do want to know what I should try or not with the familiar
And some advice from experienced players and DMs is very much appreciated
And how frequently I should use it to get things like advantage
I always advise my players that if a familiar is actively participating in combat, then the enemies will likely treat it as an active combatant.
As a wizard, I'm inclined to think of familiars as less of a spell and more of a class features tbh
I was talking more about out of combat stuff. I don't think any problems will arrive from the combat department as I imagined my familiar will just get poofed if it ever becomes a problem
Two immediate thoughts:
- Don't forget there are other players at the table. If you're constantly scouting, how are you giving them a chance to shine (if they have that skillset)?
- You only get advantage on one attack roll per round, so use it when you can. The DM has plenty of tricks to deal with player power.
There isn't a problem per se, I can just see it's... Too useful
You can also talk with your fellow players, not just the DM. Find ways to keep them active; you are not the main character.
I don't think any of us can make that call. My two cents would be don't use the familiar every chance you get, that's all.
is there anything like multiclassing with subclasses?
You can only have one sub-class per class.
can I slap someone with cure wounds?
Flavor is free, but always check with your table.
So I can
If the dm allows it, yes
I thought you had to hold it over someone lol
Well mercy monk can punch you better
See you understand me
Because magic is cool
its not that bad
ur right
And bows are boo
but u need one melee figher in the group too
no, why?
idk I’m pretty sure fireball can solve many things
Fire ball
especialy in small room right?
So just throw a fireball
in the small room?
Yes
where u are standing
Ok let me give more context... So the problem is also not me being the main character, I think, I do try to take a more proactive role, but that's more because we're having a hard time being... Active? Not sure if that's the word for it(it's an online text campaign and messages are slow, but we're progressing so everything is great), and I'll try to call someone to do the job of it's in their skill set and send the familiar to help them instead (like when the rogue went scouting, I sent my familiar). And I think I'm not taking anyone's job when scouting because the rogue isn't doing it more often than not. Anyway, GM gave me the familiar NPC to control and that gives me a lot of liberty with it, basically as much freedom as I have to control my character and I don't want to miss use that freedom, but I also want to make my familiar useful, it's a cool and somewhat flavourful familiar, but I feel like there is some hard balance to strike. Again my DM did say that when it was exploitative they would tell me, but that's also beyond the point of being annoying and I don't want that. Oof that's a lot
I’m pretty sure you will be fine
rex ur right magic is cool but melee fighters arent bad
yeah yeah sure
but I rather blink away from any combat
because I’m pretty sure a tiny Dragonborn can’t do much damage
ohh
It's an owl familiar btw, and I did choose it because it was the best familiar and the only one actually useful in combat.
is that so?
I play a coward tiny Dragonborn lol
I found the words for it. I am not worried about making myself too much of a main character, but I'm worried about making my familiar too much of a character
so dragonborns are coward and weak ?
bro
No mine is
why?
Because he is small
tell its stats
dwarfs halflings and gnomes are small too
Yep
and are they weak?
what are u saying
That my pc is a shy weak tiny Dragonborn
do u like ur pc?
uh yeah..?
alr
I mean I made him tiny
dwarfism
dragonborns are huge
Homebrew at a guess
ohh
yep
Dragonborn’s are medium
i dont usually use fused classes or races
Wdym it’s not fused lol
that way its more complicated
not really and it’s funny how no npc takes him seriously
what class is ur dragonborn?
Trickery cleric
my username is the Dragonborn
but
?
cleric needs wisdom, dragonborn gives 2 strenght and 1 other thing
Ok?
u dont care?
Nope dragons are cool
i like u
Nice
I got a fire war axe
but u did dragonborn bc dragons are cool?
Yes
accept my friend req please
rex is ur dragons name?
yes
cool
yep
u have drawing?
Yes 10
show me
Without his cloak and his base armor
inn dm
It's more of nudge, It's not that big I think. As an example from today me and another player found a door warded with an arcane lock, and after identifying it I said "Hey Character can you so something about this?". Sure the player could have taken the iniciative too, but that is a good way to signal I'm done with my thing(in my case, inspecting the magic) and they can come and do their thing.
It never came up but If I do see the potential for a player to use an ability that they didn't think could be used in a certain situation, I'll probably suggest it to them too, but that's is, as you said, strategizing. But not overbearing as it didn't even come up.
This is a better way to handle it both socially and in-game than simply: “Hey X, use this spell”
I had my first live D&D game
It was fun, though at the end it felt like I didn't get much done
Sometimes it happens. The previous session was just the party doing a "shopping episode."
We skipped the shopping part lmao
I asked for half pay upfront from the quest giver to shop for trinkets
It ended up being like one strong orc character that we did no damage to and the encounter ended when he decided to just suicide and blow everybody up
And we got 0 loot from it
I wish it had gone different but yeah I mean, there's gonna be a next time lol
I want to start playing on Tabletop simulator with othr people here
i have no clue what the hell this is, but it seems cool. guide on how to play?
You are on a server for discussion about the tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons
Is that what you’re asking about?
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation):
Basic Rules PDF
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf
Basic Rules on D&D Beyond
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
my honest reaction after seeing this shit is 180 pages long
lmao
You don't need to read all of it. Parts of it is spells and DM-related stuff.
Again, read the first four chapters on character creation to get you started.
So I'm the wizard, me and the DM would rather have players being relevant at all types of scenarios, not just combat, or not just dungeon diving, and that makes sense to me. And even though I'm a wizard, I do want to have relevancy in social and exploration scenarios, specially because as a player I fall short on that and I need to work on it, and my character concept also kind of touches on it. It's already easy for me to fade into the background during roleplay and I have to actively work against that. My point is, I don't want for me to be doing nothing at certain scenes (not the challenge themselves, just the overall game), and I would rather not have a familiar than compromise on that. and I don't wish that for any other player too. That kind of specialization is happening a bit at my table, the barbarian rolled well and he's a beast in combat and a good roleplayer, but isn't doing much else during exploration, but he's a new player like me, so he doesn't know everything that's possible for him to do, and might be lost at times. I think he'll find more ways to make himself useful soon, he's creative, but tips about that are also appreciated (not my job exactly, but I do want to find some ways to include him also, he's very committed) or should I just leave it up to the DM?
I had so many campaigns fail or end up badly, I can't help but get anxious 😅
Yeah I'll just let it go for now, thanks.
Thanks
I think I'm fine for now, just overthinking stuff a bit
I really want this campaign to work, specially after multiple other campaigns I joined didn't
Still, about including the new player, while I do believe he'll be fine, I am willing to include him when I naturally can, how can I? Or should I also drop that and leave it to the DM?
Hai I’m new and wondering if anyone can teach me how to play ^^

@surreal plank have a read of the basic rules linked in the bot post above, at least the first four chapters on character creation
Awesome thank you
Would you guys say that a mechanical familiar (as in the Find Familiar spell) would be a balanced "small experimental creation" for this spread of starting equipment?
Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, Investigation
Tool Proficiencies: Tinker's tools, one type of artisan's
tools of your choice
Languages: One of your choice
Equipment: A set of tinker's tools, a set of artisan's
tools, a notebook full of your scientific sketches and
notes, a bottle of black ink, a quill, a small experimental
creation of your design, and a pouch containing 15 gp
This is a background btw
I think that more means a little clockwork toy that has no mechanical benefit
Aha, haven't thought of it like that, but makes sense. Cheers!
Probably something you can reasonably make with thinker tools.
Still, talk to your DM about that, it sounds interesting, a little mechanical creature. but it shouldn't have nearly the same scope or power as a find familiar spell, or am artificer's... Thing, idk what they do tbh
That's the problem. I am the DM
He asked me if he can have some sort of an apparatus that he can cast touch spells through, and given that it's one of the things a familiar can do I immediately thought of that
But it can have a much smaller scope while still being a touch spell conduit ofc
I’d take a look at the Rock Gnome’s Tinker ability and use that as a starting point.
Haven''t thought of that, thanks!
Cast touch spells... With an object? I mean, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me
Apologies, I thought this was the main question channel. I'll go there next time
All good
I already dropped the familiar distress, it but I'm still curious about what other people think. I see the find familiar spell as more of an optional class feature in terms of balance, because the spell is mostly for wizards and I'm a wizard (I'm ignoring how balanced it is for other classes, I have no way to know anyway) .
Does it make sense to think of it like that? Am I alone here?
Because the find familiar spell is different from pretty much every other spell out there, and it's more similar to some class features, and if it was homebrew, people would call it completely broken lol
This whole thread is way past newcomer terriroy and belongs in #dm-discussion
I'm not a DM though
You're touching on things a DM needs to worry about, not the player(s). Usually.
You can help new players with ideas - but players should let other players play their characters how they want and chose.
In my defence, I had other questions that did belong here, like the role of a player
Sure? The role of the player is to show up and have fun and try and help others have fun.
It's a collaborative story telling RPG game. The DM is primarily a story facilitator and rules adjudicator.
By role of a player i meant more like what the player should worry about, like the familiar stuff, being inclusive of players, how to make sure I don't overstep, those things.
I didn't think those were questions a more experienced player should have
Next time I'll try to find a different channel though, but it's kinda hard to judge where each question should go
But where should I ask player related questions about OOC things and behavior for example?
I can't find any other channel for that
I feel like that'd be general #dnd-discussion as the closest fit.
Each channel has a description for what falls under its purview. This channel is really for basic orientation purposes. There's not a newcomers-only discussion channel.
I see.
Well I feel like this is feasible newbie question so I'll ask here again lol, can a wizard feasibly take a support role in combat?
Instead of being a blaster
Yes - wizards have access to a lot of spells, many which can boost your party members or provide environmental effects your party can use to good effect.
Particularly some of the magical wall spells (wall of fire, etc.)
It can do damage but it can also block off parts of the battlefield, creating areas of control if you will.
Basically divide the enemies into smaller, more manageable groups.

i need help i want to make a character that is a wandering smithy with no name (that anyone knows of) that wields a hammer (blacksmiths hammer not war hammer) and an axe
but idk what stats a "blackssmith hammer" should have
I would recommend choosing whichever of the official options you think best represents a blacksmith’s hammer, and then simply calling it one.
I Wanna Get Into DnD Maybe Learn Some Bits And Play A Campaign, Not Many Friends And Definitely Not Ones Into DnD, But Id Love To Get Into It, i Made A Character But No Campaign To Use Him :(
“Often, an improvised weapon is similar to an actual weapon and can be treated as such. For example, a table leg is akin to a club. At the GM’s option, a character proficient with a weapon can use a similar object as if it were that weapon and use his or her proficiency bonus.” Just treat the smith’s hammer as a war hammer, like Spam suggested
I didn’t even mean using the improvised weapon rules, just reflavoring.
Reflavoring works too!
Check out the #find-a-game channels
ok cool ill go with that
Ive never played dnd but if anyone has some tips please tell me

Did you have a specific question on your mind? Where are you stuck?
Hey I have never played dnd before and I am trying to set up a game with my friends. I’m still trying to learn how to be a dungeon master and I am really confused on how the dice rolling and effectiveness works. Could someone help me?
Do you have a specific example you’re trying to understand? What do you mean by “effectiveness”?
Have you read the basic rules linked above?
This section explains the basics of how dice are used, at the very least.

Could someone show me the online list of what Druid’s can turn into? I’ve seen different lists, but I’m not sure which one I can use in 5e
It's in the free Basic Rules.

Ah I see thank you
You can also use D&D Beyond to easily filter by monster type and CR. Here’s all beasts with a max CR of 1/4:

Ah I see thank you
So I just created my first character and I wanna know if I did a good job on it because idk. I'd like to join a campaign but I don't know where to start. I read chapters 1 through 4 on dnd beyond and I kinda want to learn as I play instead of reading a bunch
My dad used to play dnd way back in the day and he says it's decent but I only have 7 hp so idk...
looks good to me
my dad too, played dnd
Looks fantastic, only thing you're missing are some bonds for your character, but you could totally leave that blank until you find a game to join, a fitting motivation could vary greatly from setting to setting
But yeah, 7 HP is rough. You are going to want to keep mage armor on at all times.
yeah
Nice now all I need is a campaign to join. Do you have to play irl or can you play online nowadays
oof indeed
a lot of people game online
I thought having good constitution would help with the hp
It does, and it'll help you keep concentration on some of the really cool spells later on, so it'll pay off.
wizards are memeablely squishy
I might make a tanky fighter build later but I wanna actually know what I'm doing before I do that
Shadow of moil says you become heavily obscured what does that mean like I can hide easier in dark places?
hell yeah it would be fun
I'm personally all for taking the "worst ideas" and making them into compelling characters
heavily obscured is explained on page 68 of the basic rules
Can a cleric learn fireball
No.
I think a certain domain can? Can’t remember
Oh wait.
Light may be able to
Yep light can
Fire storm and flame strike are the only fire damage spells you can get
Which are very high level
Hello! Im pretty new to D&D and really wanted to get into the game. I have read up on some races and classes and im thinking of some characters. But Is there anywhere else I should start or something I can read up on so I know what I am doing? There is so much stuff that I dont know where to start!
Have you read the basic rules?

i'm so nervous, i'll be a dm for the first time and i'm still so confused..... the time i played with my parents was super homebrewed....
Hello people! I have no idea where to go but I'm looking to join a AL style game. Relatively new to DND. Haven't played past level 5 in any campaign since most to fizzle out rather quickly.
You'll do amazing! Think of it this way; every DM makes mistakes so the only way you can fail at being a DM is by not making any mistakes which immediately means you're an amazing DM anyway!
thank you 🥹🥹🥹 i'll do my best!
You may want to check the #adventurers-league channel - they even have a #1050206572535623690 forum area but I don’t think there’s a lot of game postings there. But the nice folks in #adventurers-league can probably point you towards other resources to find an AL game.
Morning guys and gals
hopefully a new player friendly campaign shows up today
Most folks are fine taking on a new-to-D&D player as long as the player is showing a willingness to learn (e.g. willingly reads the rules to know how to operate their character) and if they connect well with the rest of the group (fits in socially).
well my main concern is how sparce DMs publish campaigns
But also don't feel like you have to read all the rules - but get to know the core game mechanics (how to make attack rolls, how to make saving throws, how to make a skill checks, the general features of the class and race you're playing). The rest of it you'll learn as you play.
You'd be surprised, we get a new campaign in #looking-for-players almost once an hour
