Oh im still new. Only game i played was a one shot that cut short. Just curious about the setting @cobalt frigate
ngl same
Oh i tagged the wrong person
what to do if:
idk anyone who plays dnd
want to play irl
live in a small town
no nerd shop nearby
and doesn't have much experience
I guess the best approach would be to encourage the people who don't want to.
Try starting a bit of a regular board game night amongst your friends. Then once you have found who is into it and regularly availble, sound out if they want to try d&d
sadly, no one of us has the experience to be the dm
Always good to remember: every DM started having never DM’d before.
You don't need experience to be a DM. Grab the starter kit, or the free Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure that was in the older version of the starter kit. It's built for new DMs with new players
but they prob played as a player before
Phandelver is both great and free.
I never played DnD before DMing.
alr, I guess I'll use my family
But yeah, the fastest way to get a group together is offer to put in the work to get started, then rotate DMs as players get comfy and y’all find a routine.
most of my friends are kind of zoomers
they only play games
making characters is too "slow" and "boring"
same for the game as for them
and I very much believe that we would waste half of time explaining why that one guy "can't bang a sexy devil"
Haha none of those are exclusive to that generation.
hello
umm
If you keep talking about the thing getting deleted then it’s going to get deleted 😅
getting back to subject
so how do you even play DnD cuz IDK how to start D:
But the game takes a lot of time. It can be difficult to schedule for, and if you have to rely on your guardians for transportation it gets even harder. Take your time, offer to run the game, and you’ll build a group.
If you’re still in school there is a chance there’s a related club, and I can guarantee you that there is a teacher willing to sponsor one if you’re willing to start one.

clubs in my school doesn't exist
Valei here’s some links to get you started!
Then you make one.
thanks
the "option" of making one doesn't exist
It'll be a bit hard to create one for some countries or schools
in Poland schools are insanely bad ya'know
Alright. Do you have the ability to talk to others in your school? Message board? Bulletin board? Talking to each other?
no, they only stand for the council
So you literally cannot approach anyone else in your school who might be interested in playing D&D?
You can always join a group that's advertised in our game finding channels such as #looking-for-players
You can play D&D online and make new friends that way
I said before, that I prefer irl games ALOT
That may be the case, but if finding people to play with IRL isn't possible, that preference is moot
Yeah you’ve kind of illustrated that it’s impossible for you to communicate with others IRL.
Gotta make do with what you got, which in this case might be online play
that's why I'll probably DM some campaigns for my family
after that I'll try to make them to be the dm
I'm not a total caveman nerd, I know bunch of people none of them wants to try
I already asked
of course, there's option for dnd events in poland
that sometimes happen
it's usually like a "RPG game event"
but they are totally random so I can't play usually
aslo they are 1 shots or 2 shots
I sometimes go on camps
where I play like 2 weeks stright
that's my plan for next year
I have a question what i put on the voice FAITH of my paladin?

That’s probably a question best discussed with your DM.
Typically it would be whatever god(s) they worship, but which gods even exist depends on the setting of your campaign.
Those personality and description sections are mostly for your own benefit, though. You can add as much or as little as you like there.
Background is the only one you really need.
ty men
Does money weigh? or is there a cap of how much money you can hold?
Coins have weight, which would be capped by your carrying capacity and other equipment.
Many DMs handwave that tho.
A standard coin weighs about a third of an ounce, so fifty coins weigh a pound.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Coinage
ic
Handwave means “not bother with.”
why does dnd beyond not add that to your carried weigh
There’s an option in your character settings to include or ignore coin weight.
You should ask your DM which settings to use.
I'm the DM 💀
yeah by default DDB sheets count coin weight
Then you get to choose!
Then it’s up to you. Just make sure your players have it set consistently.
Click “Manage” next to the character name, then select “Character Settings” in the sidebar.
I have zero ideas on dnd

But if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!
Sure sure, man I hate reading.
There’s a YouTube playlist in there that breaks the rules down nicely and gives you direction.
But you’ll have to read eventually. The rules are published in books 😅
Oo character character creation. Time to make an abomination
what if you get a negative total on an ability check
Then you likely failed the check.
You need a total equal to or greater than the DC to succeed.
(I would not expect there to be a negative DC; at that point, the DM shouldn’t even be asking for a roll.)
"Divide 100 XP equally among the characters if the party avoids or survives the pit trap."
How would i tell what the xp is for if they didnt trigger it
also
do I reward xp mid fight or after the fight?
If by “didn’t trigger” you mean “didn’t discover”, then I would not award anything.
If they did discovered it and turned away, I would not award anything either.
If they discovered it and got past it without triggering it, then they avoided it, and you divide 100xp among them.
Hello everyone. I'm curious about spellcasting focus, does a holy symbol work for all spells? Im a Cleric but want to branch off to bard, so I don't know if the Holy Symbol will work for bardic spells.
That part’s up to you, though. Usually easiest just to do it at the end and give them a single combined total to add.
A holy symbol will not work for bard spells, simply because a bard’s spellcasting feature doesn’t say they do.
If you’re multiclassing, you’d either need an item that can serve as a spellcasting focus for both classes, or switch to a component pouch instead.
But would a component pouch work for cleric spells
If a player served a god of music, for example, and gave me a reasonable argument that their musical instrument constituted a holy symbol, I’d probably allow it.
Yes
ohhhhh
Any spell can be cast by providing the material components for a spell. A component pouch holds those components.
Thank you @smoky adder
A spellcasting focus replaces the need for those specific components (unless the component has a gold cost or is consumed).
Is there a tool for converting local time?
Do you mean in discord? There's a timestamp functionality now I think. Or do you mean to the time/date of the game world?
E.g. right now it is <t:1688915340:R> and that will be accurately displayed based on local settings.
Which can also be said as <t:1688915340:F>
Oh discord
You can use this tool: https://r.3v.fi/discord-timestamps/
Cool, thanks!
As a druid, you have access to all possible druid spells of your level, but select a set number to "prepare" for that day. You gain access to new spells when you level up and get spell slots of new levels.
Every time you take a long rest, you can change what spells you have prepared.
So is there any spell for lvl 1?
Something to be aware of is that Spell Levels and Character levels don't match up. Spells are levelled 1-9. If you look at the table on this page, you can see when you get 2nd level, 3rd level and so on spells. E.g. you get Level 2 spells at Druid level 3, and 3rd level spells at druid level 5: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/druid
Okay thanks man
Thanks means alot
You'll also get a small number of Cantrips. These ones you do just learn a set number: 2 at Level 1.

Worth noting that unlike your prepared spells of 1st-level and higher, you’re unable to change your cantrips after a long rest.
@lofty rock remember have fun
Thanks
Of course
This community is the best one i have ever seen

Hello
Im New with DM, there was any trick? (I have buyed the starter pack with the Tempest Dragon Island)
Read the campaign. Read it again. Read it a third time...then read what you intend to run on the first session.
Keep it moving. You don't know the rule? Let your players know, make up something to use for now and move on. Look it up later and let them know at the next session.
Momentum is always more fun than rigid adherence to the rules.
how do i start playing here in the server
do i have to own the dices w
?
or some other material , like i know i gotta create a character and all that
but some help would be very needed
i really wanna get into this but i dont know how
any volunters ?
First you need to find a group that is willing to take you in
There is a pinned post instructing how to look for groups here
If you’d like I could help understand the character creation process
Thanksss
@soft relic I made my own discord channel for my group and put in the rules for them as far as how to make an attack. I made my own campaign and put each section in the discord channel for me to privately see the maps, creatures, traps etc ..just a thought
i was wondering how to play d&d online i heard it is possible to do that
There are websites that are platforms for playing online
They handle everything, character sheets, maps, dice rolling, music
#find-a-game has info on how to find a group or game.
This covers the basics of playing D&D online. https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
If I wanted to create a draconic character would they have to be Evil/serve an evil deity? I really want there breath attack but I want a lawful good nature. (First character btw)
no
Dragonborn's alignment isn't affected by their draconic ancestry. You decide how they act with their Bonds, Flaws, Ideals, and personality.
Not all dragons are bad
And the trend at many tables seems to veer away from using alignment at all.
Remember that alignment doesn't define your character but the other way around.
Hello !!
Hello
I'm really sorry I'm gonna bother you lot with loads of questions, What's the best thing to work on first when you're starting DND?
this is gonna sound really stupid
but what does it mean by system
i’ve seen people but like “e5” or something
So there have been many editions of D&D over the years - so "5e" refers to the current 5th edition of D&D.
Best thing to do is start learning the game mechanics and terminology. I'd recommend giving the free basic rules read through. Check the pinned messages on this channel.
there are massive differences between editions, its easier to list the things that are the same
The rules in each edition are different from each other. They evolved over the decades of play.
THANK YOU!!
ok so should i start with 5th edition then?
The major differences is each edition used different rules/game mechanics. They also often had different books.
I would recommend you do because 5E is the current edition and the most played.
I agree with OldManYellingAtClouds
Here's an article that explains the history of the editions of D&D but also their differences.
https://www.dicebreaker.com/series/dungeons-and-dragons/how-to/dnd-edition-differences
sure i’ll chuck tgat down i’m going to look for a one-shot game to play to begin trying to work out how to play properly
(I've played all of the editions except of OD&D)
im completely new to d&d, and need help ;/
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?

Good ways to learn a game like D&D:
- Read the rules of the game
- Watch some folks play the game (livestream and video on demand of D&D games)
- Find some folks and try playing the game with the knowledge learned in step 1 and step 2.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
You don't need to memorize all of the rules but the fundamental ones. The Basic Rules (and source books) are there to be referenced.
I have a question about the online D&D, Do i just make a character in Dnd beyond and can enter any campaign?
So D&D Beyond is basically the official digital toolset for D&D.
But which tools any particular group uses is up to that group to decide for themselves.
I use it in all of my games; some people prefer other tools or good ol’ pen and paper.
Since it’s the official toolset, I’d wager most groups allow characters on D&D Beyond, but again, that’s all up to the group itself.
If you don’t have a group yet, I’d recommend coming up with a few loose ideas for characters. You can do that on D&D Beyond if you want a helping hand through the process.
Then when you find a group, you can work with the DM to pick whichever character fits best for that campaign and then add any finishing touches.
How do you do that in D&D beyond??
It lets you create up to six characters for free. Just play around with it and build a few different ones you’d be interested in.
ooh alright
You too bro

Not sure if this is a good place to ask, but thought I’d give it a shot. Currently a player in one campaign and a DM in another with some friends. Both are moving pretty slow due to busy schedules so I was hoping to start playing in a West Marches style campaign to fill the gaps between these campaigns. I’ve never played with strangers before so I was hoping to play in a pretty vanilla group open to relative newbies. I looked through the find a game posts but I really didn’t know where to start. Anyone got any specific recommendations?
I am probably one of the few DnD players who has NOT watched Critical Roll yet
I’m probably some heathen or something for it
For West Marches style of play, try looking through the #looking-for-community posts as that's where they'll be. I can't give any specific recommendations other than be careful and don't share any personal information to folks (keep it general), utilize Discord's tools to block users if needed and report to Discord any harassment or breaking of terms of service.
Hey everyone, i really want to create my own campaign, but I don't know where to start. This is my first time doing anything D&D related. Any help?
#dm-world-building and #dm-discussion might be better places to get help from other DMs
Thanks bro.
I will say if it's your first time DM'ing I'd recommend running a prewritten adventure - lost mines of Phandelvar is built for first time DMs and players anc can be found for free on DnDBeyond.
Alright.
That way you can focus on learning the rules/managing the game without all the overhead of "how to create an adventure for your group".
But don't be afraid of tweaking things to best suit your group.
I have the motivation and ability to create my own campaigns. It's just I never managed to work it out because this is my first time doing D&D. I already have a few stories but I'll try the premade one first. Thanks.
can i as a rogue learn spells?
If you take the arcane trickster subclass
alright ty
I’d actually suggest folks post their specific questions here and then we can respond/answer here so more folks can learn from what’s posted.
Yeah no worries!
Does anyone know a good dice set for d&d? like 2 of every dice required or something
Hello
I use a website called Dice Emporium bc its one of the few places that lets you buy individually
There’s a set of like 5+ full sets on Amazon for cheap
I’m kinda shy rn. I haven’t played since 2005 the yr b4 my eldest brother who introduced me to the game passed away so…. This is the first time since then that I’ve attempted to play
Welcome - sorry to hear about your brother's passing. We actually don't play D&D games on this server but we have a #find-a-game channel which describes various ways to find a game and group to play D&D.
So I just bought the starter set & dragons of icespire peak for me and my daughter to learn to play the game as it seems really fun with lots of freedom. I still haven't fully gasped all the rules, etc. Trying to find an online group to play with to learn the ropes. I work swing shift so I'm never off the same day each week so it may need to be a one-shot. Let me know thanks! If there is any more swing shifters we could possibly do a campaign.
I’d look for a local adventurers league at a game store. Those modules are built for more drop in play

All good but thanks for offering

Ok
waves new to the online d&d so i may have questions from time to time
Welcome - feel free to ask questions. The more specific the better.
E.g. "Can someone teach me to play?" is less likely to get a positive response (that's a big ask) then "How many spells does my wizard know at level 1?"
well at my age i played 1st edition back in the day but i saw this and thought id look into it see if i could get in with a group from time to time so the new D&D i know little about to be honest

Technically the Curse of Strahd adventure still take place in that setting.
Welcome!
thats good to know
Thanks^^ I know the basics of dnd and always wanted to play (listened to podcasts and such) but I haven’t actually ever played before
question can people with a free account play as well or do they have to have a subcription ?
Do you mean using DnDBeyond?
DnDBeyond is just the official digital toolset - it is not required to play.
Some online groups and games may require it, but again, overall it's not required to play D&D.
The DnDBeyond subscriptions also only unlock perks like unlimited character slots, ability to add other's homebrew to your collection, and the Master Tier subscription unlocks the ability to enable content sharing.
cool thank you good info
The subscriptions do not provide access to the books though - those are seperate purchases.
Also DnDbeyond allows you to purchase items a la carte. So you can buy just one race or one class or what not and not have to buy the full book.
And speaking from experience, you buy a book here and there on DnDBeyond and before you know it it's only a small cost to buy the whole Legendary Bundle (that's all the books) - which comes with an ongoing 15% off all future books.
good to know thank you
What does it mean in lfg when they say the campaign ia combat heavy or rp heavy?

@visual crown no bother
What’s the idea?
@visual crown yea tell us
May I message both of you with it?
You can put it here
Just a big Orc lady. With Tyrande's hair. I'd love her to have lightning and shadow teleporting like she moves with the wind. She's a cook, hates to fight and likes purple.
There are a few mildly different versions of orc you could use. You can get proficiency with cook’s utensils as part of your background.
And there’s a number of class options that could get you magical abilities like that.
May I message you, Spam?
Alright
I’m gonna be dropping in and out, but it’s fine to discuss it here. This channel literally exists to help people.
I made myself a character
But I cant log in on the website so I can copy and print
Cause Google lol
I just don't know where to go and I'm not trying to be annoying.
So when people say role playing heavy campaign, does that mean role playing/banter with your party or interacting with the npcs? I was under the impression that even combat would be considered role playing.
Does anyone here have a game I can join? I don't wanna make my own cause I don't know how to make a link
Role-play heavy means more social interaction between player characters and player characters and NPCs rather than combat focussed.
Please check #looking-for-players (and also check out #find-a-game)
Share your chaarcter concept here and folks can provide suggestions on how to accomplish that (or something that comes close).

guys, my friends are running a 3 man party Tier 3 oneshot on Saturday. We're going to be slaying a dragon. The build allows us a couple things:
- Free Starting Feat
- Three Magic Items
-. two uncommon
-. one rare - Ignoring Material Cost for spells
Can someone look over this build and help me optimize it a bit further? My main concerns are that I'm going to have choice paralysis because I've rarely done high tier games, that doing damage calcs are going to take an ice age and a half, and that because I'm the main caster of my party (we have a fighter and a Hex/Sorc/Adin as the other two) I won't be helping with the DPR that much.
#optimization is prob your best bet
thank you

Im new to the game what races would you guys reccomend for a druid?
wood elf and genasi sparked my intrest but Im curious what you guys have to say
You can make any race work, but do you wanna go for vibes or for mechanical synergy?
Wood Elf is good- got that vibes, and if using the old rules the +2 dex and +1 wisdom isn't bad at all. The other features might be helpful, but also depends how much you want to stay in wildshape or not. Really up to you.
Loutsden halfling is pretty lit for a druid.
what kind of equipment would fit a druid
For Genasi, again, by old rules Water Genasi probably synergises best with +1 wis aaaand if you can convince your DM, your aquatic nature and swim speed can work in any wildshape too. >.>
oeoe I do like that
They can use whatever, but most druids are limited to only a few weapons... and their "no metal armor" guideline can get weird.
I read up on the genasi and was kinda dissapointed that the water powers dont do damage
was hoping I could go full percy jackson xd
You do have to discuss with your DM though. Different DMs rule differently on what race and class features carry across into wildshape. RAI and RAW, many abilities should, but then vibes the DM can be like 'But shouldn't that be based on your races anatomy, so if you're not that race, you shouldn't get that?' so chat it out, see how it goes.
Sling and quarterstaff are typically good for starting out, as you can have the shilellagh and magic stone cantrips.
alright btw one question what is a one shot campaign?
Whoops didn't realise this was the newcomers channel so I was giving an "advanced" answer 😄
Where do I find people who want to play DND and beyond campaign
I have never played dnd and according to the dm its a oneshot but idk what that means
#find-a-game has instructions on how to find people on this server
One shot is a short campaign with start and end all in the same session.
@simple goblet thank you
A one shot ideally will be completed in one session, though often will spill into two or more...but the key feature is that the characters are just for that particular story, and probably won't level up. The story starts and ends within that narrative, without progressing to another story. Think of it like a self-contained movie, where a campaign would be an episodic tv series perhaps with multiple seasons.
Just started getting into dnd, any pointers or tips?
- You don't need to have the rules memorized, but you should try to learn them. If you don't want to read, there are videos.
- Communicate. Be honest with yourself and your group about your wants from the game, your preferences, your discomforts, your dissatisfactions. Work together to find a solution; sometimes, it's to walk away from a table and find others to play with.
- Collaborate. It's a social game. Don't privilege your fun above anyone else's.
What class would you guys suggest is the best for o newbie
Fighter is the most straight forward class and i recommend thats where most people start
Rogue or Barbarian are other options
Are you trying to have people not use the channels that are here to help them?
Kind of defeating the purpose of using this server.
Yeah, the point of the channel for everyone to pitch in
And no offense, but nobodys perfect, who knows if you’re giving sound, safe, appropriate responses in DM
This also seems like the wrong place to be advertising your live stream
Its still a little weird and inappropriate. This channel is a place where they can access the collective wisdom of the community when they have questions, but its also a safe space that's watched by moderators. Specifically requesting private conversations with anyone who is new to the hobby/community gives you a position of power over them that no one else can watch over. Even if your intentions are 100% pure, that just seems a little weird to an outside observer
Hiya, Im a (kinda) new D&D player looking for stuff to learn bout the game! Looking forward to meeting some of ya!
whats the best way to learn how to play on your own?
watching some podcasts is a simple way to learn and pass time
Are you talking about solo play, or just learning on your own how to play?
i didn't know there was a way to do solo. i guess both
Start by reading the basic rules. Ask questions about anything that confuses you. Watch other people play the game on twitch or youtube. Watch guide videos on specific topics. The "Handbooker Helper" series is fantastic for that
At minimum, D&D will probably require at least 2 people. A DM and a Player. It doesn't really work for just 1 person to play on their own
Good advice above. For solo play, look up The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox. If that's outside your budget, you can find video explainers about solo D&D on YouTube.
There are tools for solo play but really, D&D is about collaborative storytelling with a table of people, whether your longtime friends or new acquaintances met for the purpose of play
winning, losing, or just fooling around together is the point
Wildermyth is solo dnd
As i said, there is stuff to play solo. But the full experience is at a table
but its much funnier with friends
If you have a question, you’re welcome to ask it. Whoever’s around will help.
Where would you look to find groups looking for players, especially ones that are good to newcomers?
oh, that in retrospect seems a little obvious. Sorry I am stupid lol
Or you can ask in #character-discussion
Hello, I’m new to DND and I don’t know how to start
?new
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
No, ask here. There are plenty of people who are knowledgeable who can help you here.
Im actually thinking about making an Obito Uchiha themed character since he’s my favorite and I’ve seen many people on the internet make characters based on their favourite characters
I understand where you're coming from, Dillz, but it's inappropriate for this server.
Sup peeps
I think they should have a choice on which they want to do and jjst have to talk in here because if I was new I’d rather talk to people 1 on 1 as well
Dude...
What?
Your messages were deleted for a reason.
I don't know the character, but you are right, a lot of people start with "how do I be X"? - for a guy in my group it was Strider. For someone on here recently it was Anakin Sywalker
Huh
Then they can reach out of their own volition, it’s odd to say the least that you’re requesting people to DM you, especially as their new to the hobby which creates a power imbalance. Also no one knows if you’re even giving good advice or are being safe within DMs as opposed to here where everyone can see.
My messages were deleted because you don’t like that you don’t get to have an input on your opinion on what others have to say
I'm not a mod.
Can everyone just stop arguing please?
Alright folks. Cool it.
I’ve helped plenty of people already
And they have said there characters I helped them make are good
A moderator has said to stop. Don't cross the line.
So I've played as a DM a handful of times but starting to go to a card shop on Mondays to find more ppl to play w regularly.
I'm planning to use the cragmaw hideout and the cragmaw castle maps from the list mines of phandelver essentials kit to run a short 1 shot tonight as dm.
I'd like to set the run for lvl 5 chars so I'd like some help on what type and how many enemies would be appropriate estimate and idea to work from. I know I'll have to change it on the fly but just a source to work off fromthan
Blade Singer and flavor some spells could work.
#dm-discussion can probably give you the best help here.
Read the free Basic Rules and check out the classes that are available to see which one fits closest to Obito Uchiha. D&D is about progression of the character, both in terms of power and character development. You're not going to be a demi-god out of the starting gate.
Sounds like fun! Some folks on #dm-discussion might be able to hammer out the details.
Many people make characters inspired by their favs from other mediums, but just keep in mind a couple things:
- flavor is free! How a character or item looks or sounds is pretty much up to you, even if it strays from convention. As long as you’re not changing the mechanics of how something works, you are encouraged to flavor spells, characters, items to fit your vision
- OTOH, D&D is a collaborative game, with rules. Your fav anime hero might be a super powerful ninja who is super fast and strong and wields the mighiest weapon, but …you usually start at lv1, with limited abilities. The fun is the journey of growth and adventure; dnd characters usually start weaker and grow stronger
- as a group game, you’ll have other party members playing with you. Be respectful of your tablemates
Lastly, think about what it is about your inspiration that you actually want take for your character
Just saying “i wanna be X character” isnt as helpful as: i want to have these characteristics and style from X
Explain what yu’re looking for, not everyone shares your interests. The more you explain the better help you get
With those tips, check out #character-discussion
this is fantastic advice
hello i am new to dnd
Hey! Welcome.
hi, me too
I'd like to join a game but it's hard to find one :/
You aren't wrong. Finding a good group is the entry boss of D&D - Scheduling is the Final Boss.
I'm running a game also lol
i would like some advise on how to get started, i know how to create character but i would like to know if i could create my own charater from imagination
But I want to join one just to kinda have a break and Bea ble to sit back and enjoy someone else's world lol
You are best creating a character that you like, but mechanically fits within the rules of the game. You can do a lot with just changing the "flavour" description of things.
@lyric fjord you should use the race/class options
DM's may bend rules to fit an interesting character, but it's best not to start out with that.
Not many dms are going to be ok with a player having a 100% homebrew character
the reason i am asking is becasue i want to make a inkling like character from the game splatoon
@lyric fjord so your talking about a race
A nice dm might be willing to homebrew that with you
But what class would you play@lyric fjord
Can you describe some of the features of the Inkling that are important to you? What are you identifying as a major piece of it?
Just be aware you may have a hard time joining any game lots of dms don't like homebrew stuff
well the thing is i dont know becasue the inkling uses a veraty of weapons to spread colored ink on the ground or on enamys for my to swim in it or damage it
@lyric fjord yea... dude your talking about creating an entire class around your character I'm sorry to say I don't think your gonna be able to do that
Because homebrew race Is one thing
But having a dm help you homebrew an entire class....
The way I would accomplish this is taking some key spells, and flavouring their text to be ink-based rather than their existing description. Snare and Glyph of Warding, and Catapault for hurling Oil flasks around will accomplish some of that "field of ink" effect, and Misty Step for transporting yourself across the battlefield.
@viral pelican true ^^
But they should still choose a specific class that's actually From dnd
Yes, this is a new person who I am trying to talk towards that end.
I would reccomend attificer
ok i get it but about the features basicly its a three foot human squid hybrid that can switch between human and a squid form
and it desolves instenly in bodys of water and slowly takes damage in rain
Well artifice would work for the type of weapon play your wanting
Druid would work for the "become a squid" thing
Druids are the shapechanging class, maybe consider that. You could also then couple that with spells like Transmute Rock, which turns a field into mud that you can swim through (if your DM is going to allow you to swim in the mud)
that could work but is the whole desloving water thing fine or no...
I'm just being honest it's up to your dm
And your not gonna find many that would even entertain these ideas
@lyric fjord is this your first time playing?
anyone tryna run a game bro
Not everything is going to map directly. You can have an Inkling-themed D&D Character, but you can't have an Inkling in D&D without some serious concessions that most DM's wouldn't agree to. Just like you can't bring Link into Splatoon and let him throw bombs at the other players.
yes
In other words: build a good, functional druid, and then go through it and ask "how can I theme all of these abilities to be close to ink".
ok i will work on it but about the disolving in water thing fine or no
@lyric fjord ok here my advice, you should pick a regular class and race and run a campaign first and actually learn how to play, and the nuances /features ect THEN you can have a better understanding of what your doing when designing a character and try to make your inkling for the next campaign
Can't think of any feature that would fit dissolving instantly in water, no.
then i shall
Not trying to.be a jerk, but if you haven't played before you should learn the game first before doing any homebrew
@lyric fjord I will say thats a cool idea tho ^^
no i understand you just trying to help i dont see you as a jerk
Dnd has a LOT of rules and such
one more question should i first randomize a characetr or should i create a character from scratch
Create a character from scratch
Read about the classes, see which sounds fun to you.
I have a character I can't wait to play
I made a tabaxi rogue Swashbuckler
Puss in boots 😈
ok
@lyric fjord want some assistance with your character creation?
I actually really enjoyed my first randomized character, but by randomise I mean i step by step randomised things instead of picking things out, and building the character up.
If you make a random character fully in one click, it can take the fun out of discovering them and putting them together.
It also helps if you're stuck and don't know what to play.
But remember even if you do go that route, you can always ignore a random roll and go with what ever cool idea was sparked for you instead.
So is dnd
yes i love some help
What class did you decide was the most appealing to you?
Or if you haven't decided yet, what do you imagine your character doing in a fight?
i have desiced to change up completly and go with a dwarf
Cool! Dwarves can be a very fun race.
So that's race sorted, have you decided on your class
how do i become a artifiver becasue its on poping up in dnd beyond
Artificer is the only class that didn't come from the original Player Handbook and basic rules
Therefore you kinda have to "buy" it to see it on DnD beyond
I'd recommend ignoring it for now. It's actually a relatively weak class, and usually doesn't get much attention.
ok
So, in a battle, do you image your dwarf swinging an axe, jumping around stabbing, throwing spells, or doing some combination of them?
i was thinking fighter
A wise choice to start with
now should i go with fixed or mannual hit point
Fighter is an excellent choice
Do you mean Ability Scores? I would recommend using Standard Array for your first character. Point buy is also an option if you feel more confident. I wouldn't recommend rolling for them.
This will also determine your starting Hit Points
False, artificers make magic items, guns, and of course magic guns. Very good well-rounded class
whats the difference between a sorcerer, warlock and a wizard?
I once heard a story where an artificer made a nuke out of a stone
Okay...
Sorcerer: They are naturally gifted with arcane magic
Warlock: They have a pact with a supernatural patron who give them arcane power in return
Wizard: Studies arcane art from books.
sorcerer: magic is just inherit in them (by bloodline, magical accident, or whatever)
warlock: magic comes from a bargain/pact/deal with a powerful entity
wizard: magic by learning and books.
All three are spellcasters.
A wizard learns spells from a book. They get a lot of spells to choose from, and have to pick a list to have ready each day.
A Sorcerer is innately magical. They learn a smaller number of spells, but have all of them ready all of the time. They get some extra abilities to tweak those spells, such as making them hit harder, fly further, or hit more targets.
Warlocks get spells from a pact with a higher power. They only can cast a few powerful spells between each rest, but also get a lot more punch out of their Cantrips (spells that cost nothign to cast)
Oh.
Huh
Never knew
is there any specific place for new players to find games or do i just go to find-a-game
Just find-a-game and its associated channels.
so encumbrance is just weight
Correct.
That's up to you.
I only have a first name on my first character
Up to you, does your character have a last name? Do they have 13 middle names?
hold up your telling my someone has 13 middle name
I love naming all my characters Yu for the funny
You can have as many names to your character as you see fit.
Hey Yu
All simultaneously Yes?
You can do whatever with your name it can literally be as many as you’d like
You get me
I had someone in my class with 11 😄 It was a welsh thing.
😂😂
I absolutely love dwarves it’s a great race ngl
I’m starting to lean more towards half orc for that plus 2 in strength and 1 in con and the resistance to cold
Dwarves are cool I think I see so many people use dwarves abd all of them are so angy
They are just smol but deadly
Agree the con is so helpful with dwarves
I once had someone play a dwarf cleric better than the barbarian and I feared dwarves ever since
I used to play a Paladin dwarf he was so busted
Dwarves, just like people in marching band who are under 5'4'', are always ready to throw down, no exceptions.
It doesn't help that the dwarf could come up with names and descriptions of multiple made up but highly convincing gods on the fly to make herself scarier.
The DM... had her roll advantage every time just to add to the nightmare fuel
😭😭😭
...I need to get into a marching band
Its a good time
What’s everyone’s favorite d&d class overall?
i may need help witht eh fighting style i dont know what to choose
What main weapons do you envisage your dwarf fighter using?
Big weapons or big armor?
Bard/Paladin, followed by monk
That is for #dnd-discussion
This is the newcomer channel
either a big hammer or a big two sided axe
they just joined today, Im guessing they wanted a place to start looking at classes
Sounds like great weapon fighting to me
That is not what hes doing
so i can roll again if i roll a 1 or 2 cool
More damage more of the time is hard to argue with
My bad @slow hawk
You can never go wrong with Defense. Great Weapon Fighting on average adds 1 to your damage, while an increase in AC is harder to come by.
And by going for a big weapon, you are giving up the AC of a shield
AC?
Armor class
Armour Class, how hard you are to hurt
so is ther an inbetween
The in between is using a large 2 handed weapon, and taking the defensive fighting style, still get big damage, and you get half the AC from a shield
The fighting styles sort of provide you those in-between options. A sword+shield fighter is more defensive and less damaging, while a two hander is more damage, less defense. Through fighting styles, both have the option to move closer to the middle.
Like smooth is saying
The opposite is to take sword and shield, but the dueling fighting style, which gives the more defensive build more.damage.
Option are you an admin?
They are not
does an expertise in perception affect passive perception ?
or does it count as a simple prof ?
Yes, your bonus +10 is your passive
so do iget a my weapon in game ot do i chose it
so at level 1, it would be 2 +2 +10 ?
Hi
If you had expertise and a +0 wisdom mod, yes.
you get the equipment according to your beginning class
Welcome!
It'd be 10 + Perception modifier + proficiency (if applicable) + proficiency again (due to Expertise) + any other modifiers, for calculation purposes. Add or subtract 5 from your Passive Perception if you have advantage or disadvantage, respectively.
so if a pick defencive style how do i get two handed weapon
You can still USE the weapon, you just cant reroll the 1's and 2's
I am new today in the dnd what should I do I've seen people playing it looks really cool
ok

Yes
Ok
now how does abilitys work
No
Ability scores are actually going to depend on who is running the game you are in and what system of stats they want to use.
Abilities like Strength and Dexterity?
so i donthave to worry about them now
But for heavy weapon fighters you want big strength and constitution, and everything else is up to you.
but it says to pick a generation method
Yea, because there are like 5 different ways people can have you take stats
You can just use standard array for now and change it to what the DM of that game wants later
Rolling, Standard Array, and Point Buy are the most common. Your DM will tell you which method to use.
ok
In all likelyhood they will be higher when you actually get a game
Best to start with Standard Array if you are just trying out the character creation, and then you might redo it later.
Create a character using Standard Array or Point Buy for now so you get to practice how to create one when your DM (assuming you find one) tells you to create a new character.
So at random point I asked my sister to ask her friends If she wants to try dnd
Usually when I ask these questions she would dismiss or something like that but today she actually went ahead and texted her friends to see what's their response
Now I have played only one session from many months ago and I do have one shot that's low level and easy already in my computer/printed out but I still haven't learned much of rules or the basics of how to read sheet and dices
I also have the starter kit with both player and DM book (player rulebook)
Will I be okay? 👀 (I would assume her and her friends like me are new to DnD or don't know much about it) and also assuming I will be the one DMing the one shot
I would assume you’re the one dming as well I’m also assuming it is in person
So make sure each person has dice to play
So I will have to go and buy dices yeah?
Also I would make sure since you know the most but not the most info about I would read more of the rules and learn more to help them building there characters and make sure they all are built correctly and help them all
@solid crest not necessarily
Yeah, it's gonna be my first time tho without knowing much about the game mechanics yet
@solid crest can you message me
You can use dice roller apps.
^
Dice roller apps are good
But if you would rather do dice that’s fine as well
I could help you build a campaign if you needed it
Or something on those lines if you’d like
If you jjst want to make one
I have one shot I found online that's really cute and sound fun
"A wild sheep chase" and the story is easy where not too many monsters and such
Yes, that's a good one.
The only thing I'm trying to comprehend is character sheet, i need like a complete breakdown on what they mean and how they work
Android
You can find many character sheet apps
If so there’s a basic d&d character building app on apple it’s not the best but it doesn’t the job it’s called prizm
If not there are multiple character sheet apps like nightmare said
Is it okay not to use official character sheet and just use DnD app instead?
That's up to you
Gotcha
D&D Beyond is more convenient if you're playing online. As DM you can see your players' sheets (and edit them if need be).
Ur the dm you can do what you want fr
Yeah, my only hope is I am able to read and understand the rules of the game
At very least the basic since even the instructions says I can do whatever I want
Did you read the Basic Rules yet?
Not yet, but I have seen dimension 20 enough to understand if that makes sense

Yeah I believe they also have like playlist videos on specific questions and teaching so I will do that as well
Yes they do
Can someone explain DnD to me I really wanna get into it but no one will take the time to teach mr
Teaching someone one on one doesn't scale well so we ask you to at least spend some time reading through the resources linked here - check the pinned messages on this channel.
If you have any specific questions, we can answer them here. But "teach me D&D" just won't work as we don't have time/energy to teach everyone one on one.
There isnt a replacement for putting in some time/energy into reading the stuff
The game itself kind of requires buy-in and commitment
Where can I find a game for a first timer? I don’t think I can learn much more without playing.

Most folks are fine running games with new to D&D players as long as those folks show they are learning and willing to learn the game rules and if they fit in with the group playing.
I am a late comer to the game and luckily have a mixed group I play with so they all help me figure out what I need to role because honeslty I get overwhelmed. We just started a new campaign in 5e that we are all working to retrofit back to pathfinder and then to 3 - but I decided to be a Goliath Barbarian/Sorcerer. The fighting I think I have in hand but i never know how the spells and cantrips work. Someone please explain how I find out what the heck it all means.
How they word in 3e? #dnd-elder-editions is probably the best place to ask.
If it’s for how they work in 5e you can ask here
Yeah, please clarify which system you are asking about
Also if it’s for pathfinder this is the completely wrong server
I am just trying to learn 5e for now. never been a magic user before.
Sorcerer right?
They're innate casters which means their spells come from inside. They don't prepare spells like a Wizard or Cleric but instead know certain spells and can use them as many times as they have that level of spellslots
Hey
Rules as written though, you cannot cast spells while Raging as a Barbarian
If anyone needs help making a character you can dm me and I’m down to help
#character-discussion and #optimization are great places for help on character making
Yeah I got the fact you can not rage and cast. No worries there...first time being a barbarian too.... previoulsy been Dwarve Rogue only so no magic. So I would just chose to use a spell rather than a weapon or unarmed attack.
That sounds awesome!
Is there a limit as a sorcerer as to how many spells I can use during combat?
Leveled spells yes, cantrips no
By the action economy and spell slots
During and entire combat? No, Rules as written states on your turn you can cast one leveled spell and one cantrip if you can.
But ultimately its up to how many spell slots you have though thats what cantrips are for you never run out 🙂
Usually you may only cast 1 spell per action.
Sorcerers have a metamagic feature that could allow them to cast a level 1 spell or cantrip as a bonus action, followed by a level 1 spell cast as an action.
You can find the basic rules for spellcasting here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting
But could I during the course of a battle use each of my spells & cantrips at least once? Not sure how that would work before exhausting the character.
And the sorcerer’s spellcasting feature here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/sorcerer#Spellcasting-369
I think we need to step back from explaining sorcerer spellcasting and explain spellcasting in general
Cantrips never exhaust, leveled spells you can only cast as long as you have an appropriate spell slot available.
If this person has never been a caster before getting into sorcer specific features is counterproductive
Definitely read this first
Thanks I have but it is still a bit confusing as to spell slots. I am a level 1 (new campaign)..so I have 4 levels of cantrips and 2 level 1 spells.
All of the cantrips are level Zero
In effect, yes.
Spell slots are your spell casting resource. Leveled spellss require a spell slot of equal level or higher. Some spells can be “upcast” at a higher level for a benefit.
Cantrips do not require spell slots
evening everyone
Thank you. I have read all the material I can but this is still new to me and I want to have a general idea what to do when the battle is raging...sicne currently my character is the only magic user so far in our party..2 more members could not be there for the first round. But thank you all for the help.
Hope you have an awesome time!
magic users can do a wide variety of things, which is the appeal
Yeah casting spells is really fun though there's a lot of rules
Yeah I always try to keep my characters versatile sicne I never knew who i am playing with or where we will end up on our journeys.
thanks all for the links and help last night i posted in looking for a game so ill sit back and see if anyone need a player and read up more on things
can you not cast 2 cantrips in one turn?
I am very new to the community, is there a difference between DnD and DnD Beyond?
@quartz stag remember to have fun
No

All spells, leveled or not, have a casting time, such as action, bonus action or reaction
Thanks :)
Well DnDBeyond is a digital toolset to help with playing D&D - D&D is the actual game.
i am aware yes
Ohh
The limiting rule is that if u cast a leveled spell with ur bonus action, you cannot cast another leveled spell
ok thank you
Therefore you cam cast two cantrips IF one of them has a bonus action casting time
The examples off the top of my head is Shillelagh - bonus action cantrip, then something like produce flame, action
Casting a spell is an action
Action surge gives a second action
Therefore this is legal
thanks
Always think in terms of action economy
my dm thinks having 2 bonus actions is cooler, so he can do harder encounters and more stupid stuff happens
The moment hombrew like that enters the scene, it throws the normal D&D expectations out the window
true
Hallo dnd community
Welcome
Im pretty sure you can still only cast one spell per turn
Not quite
wait really
If you cast a spell as a bonus action, the only other spell you can cast on that turn is a cantrip with a casting time of one action.
I’ve played D&D for four years and haven’t known this
If you’re not casting a spell as a bonus action, there’s no restriction.
mind blown 🤯
yeah…
It’s a rule that’s frequently misunderstood. 😅
The rule is frequently misstate due as one spell per turn, which is wrong
All you need to ask:
Did you cast a leveled spel with your bonus action? Then you can only cast a cantrip
No rules against cantrip + BA cantrip
Even that’s not entirely accurate.
It’s any spell as a bonus action, not just a leveled spell.
sure
The rephrased version of the rule in XGTE makes things clearer:
If you want to cast a spell that has a casting time of 1 bonus action, remember that you can’t cast any other spells before or after it on the same turn, except for cantrips with a casting time of 1 action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/xgte/introduction#BonusActionSpells
Thats the one
So yes, there’s no rules against cantrip + BA cantrip, but leveled spell + BA cantrip is still not allowed.
i learn best from doing things rather than reading, however, i cant seem to find any groups that welcome beginners, any advice? im kinda scared of ruining a campaign due to being new and having to ask questions.
Honestly, most games are welcoming to newcomers even if they’re not explicitly advertised as such.
I'd suggest making a post in #750812887697588356. Also keep an eye on #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community. You can find DMs looking for players in the first and community servers in the second. You can also check out other 3rd party sites like Roll20 that have DMs posting their games.
So if you see one you’re otherwise interested in, it can’t hurt to ask.
i appreciate it, thanks, ill check it out
Welcome!
Hey so someone told me to look into "westmarches" and that was incredibly vague. Im looking into it and Isnt that the same thing as the opt-in "community" tag people can put in the looking for dm thing?
Or is it different getting confused by terminology
Online West Marches are a community server where DMs and players all play in the same shared world
So you would go on an adventure while other people go on a different one and then have the chance to interact later
Yeah i get that but is that the same as the community thing this server has in the #750812887697588356 opt in tags
#looking-for-community ? Yes, some of those are West Marches servers
oh thats the place i was looking for thank you thats helpful
Happy to help!
But yes, opting in for community invites does mean you’re open for West Marches and other similar game styles.
Hello, i am new to all of this and it is overwhelming. I downloaded the app DnD Beyond to create a character and checked out Roll20. Ive also watched videos on YT about just starting out but its confusing. Is Roll20 the best/only way to play this game online? I am looking to join a campaign to learn how to play
There are certainly other ways to play online. Since you're just starting out, I'd adapt to whatever virtual-tabletop the DM of the game you aim to join is using, rather than just searching for Roll20 games.
#find-a-game can be a good place to start looking, but there are other places across the internet that people post openings in online campaigns. Since finding a game can take a bit, it is often worthwhile to look in multiple places at once. So long as you're transparent about being new to the game, and have the patience to learn, you'll do great
There are a lot of options out there for playing online, I use foundry vtt, for someone just starting out though, it can all be very overwhelming for many people. I started off, teaching my players, the bear basics by playing simple adventures without using maps and stuff just to get them into role-play in the game itself
Honestly, though, if you wanna jump right into the virtual table top right off the bat, I said, go for it
hey guys ive just made a character and was wondering if people could see if its any good? from an rp/backstory standpoint as its my first proper character and want to make sure its good
thank you for your help
What is the best book to buy first for content unlock?
Player's Handbook
Then I’d go with TCoE if you’re just a player or DMG and then MM if you’re a dm
I’d post it in #character-discussion
ah thx
eh i think XGtE is better honestly
TCoE has more new classes and subclasses
i think at least
also the buffs for ranger
xanathar's has more subclasses if i'm remembering correctly
youre right actually, it has 2 more
ig im just a bit biased bc artificer
i would just look at which subclasses they add and choose based on that
hexblade...
fair
vs twilight
Thank you. I just registered there
but clockwork soul sorc
Thank you for the advice
zealot, shepard, samurai, gloomstalker, swashbuckler, and hexblade
vs
eloquence, twilight, clockwork soul, watchers, and soulknife
id go tcoe bc clockwork soul, soulknife, and artificer
but its rlly up to personal opinion
Are there any way to get rid of legendary resistance?
as a wizard
I was really curious of how 3 enemies who have legendary resistance to auto success saving throw against my spell
Not only that
I feel like my DM immediately told me that these enemies have legendary resistance to my spell even I don't know at the first time right after I cast a spell on them
I think this is not fair
No.
Legendary Resistances can feel unfair but remember its a team effort. So maybe your fighter can grapple them and they feel threatnend enough to burn one
So the only way to deal with them is Wall of Force then..
Why are you fighting against three legendary creatures? Legendary creatures are meatn to be "solo bosses."
Wall of Force
just lock them up, yall get no turns lol
I don't believe there is any way to get rid of legendary resistances, except by forcing the enemy to use them up
Idk man, this is my dm decision
Everything in here is sooooo confusing
3 bosses in last counter
What level are you?
10th level, wizard, mirror mage
My DM is still a newbie too
It's not like 3 bosses but 4 bosses
well... I casted Wall of Force to lock one big boss
otherwise this fight will go on VERY long and it will drain my irl sleep time
legendary resistances exist to prevent bosses from being basically shut down from one failed saving throw.
they should not be on every enemy.
usually 3 on a main boss, 1 can appear on sub bosses, minions (even strong ones that hit hard) should not have any
What do you mean by mirror mage?
That’s not a wizard subclass afaik
Homebrew
Congrats! Hope you had fun!
Yes it was extremely good
I just wanted to ask if u guys had any tips for me
Anything that will help me in my future games
I chose to be a dragon born paladin lol
Didn’t really know much abt it
Keep learning how your character works, and make sure everyone at the table (including the DM) are having fun.
Just cuz it sounded cool 😂
Okay will remember that
Also do we need to buy a board or smth to play on?
Cuz my friend just drew a map on his own and we were playing
Nope! You can play D&D in a few ways, and that is a classic way
Oh okay
You can play with no props at all, called 'theatre of the mind' where you just imagine the scenario in your head. Distances and exact locations tend to be abstracted.
Or you can play with minimal props, like putting some dice or caps or anything you have around to represent creatures and where they are, and use pencils to mark walls so on.
Or you can quickly scetch out basic maps- a clear wipe board is a great buy for this style.
Or you can go full out- buy tile sets, make dioramas, paint minis, so on.
Online games tend to have the benefit of being able to share digital maps, or even have a virtual map on something like roll20 where you can move tokens around the board.
Ooh
I see
Yeah we used minimal props and he drew the map on an A4 paper
How do I play this online?
Is there like a website?
Also appreciate u taking time and typing such a long message, thanks
Hellu :3 I got a question, so me and my friend know dnd now for quite a while but never reall played longer than some months, because the hype was gone :/. And we just played with our friends until now but i also wanna see how other people play ^^ so I wanted to ask how do we get to a short campain, maybe for 3/4 months ^^'? Bc most dms have dnd session who last years
Roll20 is a VTT (Virtual Table Top) but there are other platforms as well- Owlbear Rodeo is pretty minimal, Foundry is high tech, but does require someone to subscribe. Tabletop Simulator can even be used, but I found it a bit clunky and can overheat laptops >.>
If you want short games you can look out for games marked 'oneshots' (Which are meant to be contained to a single session, but it's pretty common for them to accidently spill over into 2 or 3).
You can also look into Adventure League games, which are official organsied play games. You make a character following AL rules (so pretty RAW and by the books), and you can join pretty much any AL game that has space and is the correct level. You can hop in and out with not too much commitment.
Westmarches can also be a good way to play short games when ever without commiting to long game. Westmarches are often servers with multiple DMs and players, and when ever a DM can run a game, players who are available can jump in.
Roll20 basic is free yep. Which gives you sheets, map and very basic fog of war (to hide areas). Paying lets you have more storage space for images (like maps and tokens), and gives 'Dynamic Lighting' which you can add to walls so that players can't see through them as they move around the map.
Again, one person could also pay for a subscription, make the game, then hand it over to someone else to DM. That DM then gets access to dynamic lighting, and the 'compendium' for that game (you can also buy books and content on roll20, which makes it a lot easier to drag and click things into your game, without having to manually fill in a sheet each time)
I see
Roll20 is bad for mobile though, as a warning. You can use a phone to play on roll20 but it's... not good.
So this will basically be like a map and game on a laptop without having to draw a map manually
Oh okay will keep that in mind
Pretty much yep. Like for my game I can either make my own digital map, or download one someone else has made (from other sites), and drop that in, add dynamic lighting, then add tokens. Players can move their own tokens around the map to look around.
Roll20 also has digital sheets, so you can just click things to roll checks/attacks so on.
It is worth looking around different VTTs to see what you actually want and also what people can use. Owlbear Rodeo is simpler (I haven't actually used it though). Foundry is a lot more high tech that roll20 and has a lot more things it can do, but does require pay in (Long term, foundry is cheaper than roll20 for more content, I believe so keep in mind)
Random question were do I find printable Character sheets
Character sheets: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
DnDBeyond also exports out PDF/printable character sheets.
Alr thanks a lot
Thank you @echo kelp
I appreciate it 🤍
Why do I need to buy expansions to make making a character easier?
What do you mean?
The other books only increase the amount of options you have, but they don’t make character creation any easier.
TBH I’d say the extra options make character creation harder because now there’s more rules.
I guess discussing my question is prohibited so I think its better to move on.
Not prohibited, just THe Sad Robut was correct
you don't need to buy anything to make it easier, and the basic rules keep it simpler by limiting your options.
It's generally advisable not to spend any money until you have a grasp of the game, and know it's a wise investment for you.
(that's when they have you hooked 😉 )
Yeah I'll definitely buy dice and spell cards ect
Dice are a worthwhile investment
Spell Cards...eh well if you are committing to a class, they can be neat.
D&D Beyond also lets you buy just character options individually, too, like a single subclass.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Yeah ive been enjoying playing sorcerer
So it’s pretty easy to just get what you need when you need it.
I made a character with a friend, and if i were to make it in dnd beyond i would need to buy multiple expansions so i was discouraged from using it
Yeah, that's unfortunately how it is.
That said, if you find yourself in a campaign with someone who has content sharing enabled and they have the content, you can build your character using that!
You can imagine how much it sucks for someone who has bought the book, has it open in front of them, but they can't use the content there because physical books don't unlock online content 😄 but thankfully, there's many other platforms for play, and you aren't obliged to use D&D Beyond whatsoever.
@serene wasp Please don't send me unsolicited DMs, anything you have to say to me, you can say here.
Exactly, but you are going to run into the problem that any other online character builder is going to limit you to the SRD options without purchases wherever you go
Im a Woodelf Ranger with Archery as skill should I choose absorb elements or cure wound as my spell?
Cure Wound
Also you're running archery, half the benefits of absorb elements are lost on you unfortunately
the d6 extra damage only triggers on melee, not ranged
TBF, I never see people use Absorb Elements for the extra damage. Only the damage resistance.
I am a swift halfling (forgot the sub race for it) should I focus athletic and acrobatics
There's no right or wrong choice for skill proficiencies.
Depends on your ability scores and what you want your character to be better at.
Pick whatever helps tell the story you want to tell.
My story is I'm one of the best guards from my campaign who has a turn of heart and joins the party fleeing from these other guards. I am also a pawn of the devious god togath
Yeah that was the part that I liked about absorb elements but would the damage resistance be more helpfull then healing myself and my allies?
Think of it this way. Your character needs to get into a window above their head. Do they scale the wall with climbing, or do they take a running parkour trick?
They would most definitely do a running parkour trick
Cause I'm only 3'2
Well then, maybe Acrobatics suits the character more.
If you have no one else who can use Cure Wounds, I’d go Cure Wounds. If you do, I think you’re better suited to Absorb Elements.
Strictly speaking, Jumping is more of a Strength-based activity, but I'm more asking this as a concept question to see how you are thiking about your character.
We do have a bard with a healing spell I believe
Thanks jale
Might be worthwhile to check with your party and ask them their opinions!
yeah Ill do that
I'm trying to stay away from playing monk cause I love playing different monks. Though my last one was cool cause he became a god. Had a town named after him (tubington). I also created beatboxing (which I called tubing)
Anyone now what I should play for my first game?
In terms of character class? Well, what do you dream of doing? If you imagine a battle, what role are you taking? Are there any fictional characters that really speak to you?
A soldier
Nice, strong start! You probably want to play a Fighter, which is also a great class for new players
At level 3 you can also pick a subclass, but it would be worth finding a DM and a game to join before thinking too deeply about that
You'll also have to pick a race/species. Really, any can fit.
My cousin invited me to a game it’s already started
That's cool. Ask them what level they are playing at currently.
3
Great, not too hard then. So, at level 3 you'll have a subclass too, which defines what kind of fighter you are.
He also offered me a role of an npc
What kind of abilities do you image your soldier would have? How do they fight?
Sword and shield
The basic rules describe the Champion, which is focussed on Critical Hits, and then the Player Handbook, which your DM also probably has, will have more like Battlemaster, who has special combat moves.
There's also ones with more magical abilities, if that's what you're looking for.
There's a total of 10 across all the books, so best to talk to your DM about which ones they have available.
You'll also need to pick a fighting style: with Sword and Shield, the Dueling style is probably the best for you. Gives you more damage when using a one handed weapon like that.
I was thinking something like black prior from for honor
So sort of a character who prevents others from moving past them?
Yea
The Interception fighting style might be a good choice, then.
And there's a few defensive maneuvers you could choose as a Battle Master.
The supplement book Xanathars Guide to Everything features a fighter subclass called Cavalier. While it's themed around horseback, actually most of its abilities are about preventing movement past you. At level 3, this means the enemies you hit will be at a disadvantage if they try to attack others, and you can hit them back if they try it.
I asked him he said we’re playing by the hand book
I'd go with Battle Master and the Defense fighting style, then.
Same, solid choice
Ok
And probably the Soldier background
Where can I send a picture
Of?
You can only upload pictures and share a link here. Try imgur
He offered me the role of an npc that is with the party
Does the NPC already exist? That can still be fun.
Especially as a sort of "try the game out"
Yes
If that's the case they probably already have a character sheet, but if not, a fighter battlemaster will be the best bet
He gave me the npc sheet and an empty one
I've gotta go play some DND now, so sorry I can't help further, but if nobody is replying here, you might want to try #character-discussion . Best of luck!
Ok thanks
do you guys have any tips for a new player whos gonna be a woodelf ranger?
or just general dnd tips
My list of general player tips: #dnd-newcomers message
To those I'd add, "Don't make your fun interfere with anyone else’s.”
alrighty
First have fun, second learn you characters skills and traits
Tips for rangers:
-You may not be a wizard, but your spells do matter! Keep an eye out for how best to use them!
-Your Bonus Action is a vital part of your turn, don't forget it
-You may not be a rogue, but you've got plenty of skills to use out of combat. Always keep an eye out for how your class features can help
I'm not technically a beginner because I've played quite a bit by now, but I still choose to play beginner campaigns because it takes me a while to understand everything, plus there's more patience/forgiveness in beginner games. Not as intense there.
I'm not ready for experienced dnd lol
Alright ^^ thank you very much and sorry for the late respond!
Hello, I am a completely new beginner and have decided join this server to learn and hopefully become a respectable DnD player
Welcome. There are useful resources in the pinned messages of most channels, this one especially. Otherwise, ask questions and get involved in the discussions as they happen!
Umm hi I'm new here and also new to d and d beyond, can i play with you guys?
#find-a-game gives you instructions for using the server's channels to find other players.
Just put a post in find a game I did still waiting to see if anyone wants new players but it may take some time to find someone
Hi everyone I’m new here and too dnd my daughter wanted to start dnd and idk how to play so trying to get as much info as I can. I’ll be there dm starting and eventually i wanna be a player also. Tia
Take a look at the pinned messages in this channel for some handy starter resources!
Thanks I’ll look into it i bought the essentials starter kit hopefully that will help to
The Essentials Kit is pretty good, though it's open-ended, which I would have found a challenge to DM when starting out.
There are 3 starter box sets which are are great for newbies.
I gotcha Hopefully it helps me get started, I’ve been doing some cramming trying to understand it is a lot of info I’ve been watching YT and reading online lol
Don't feel like you need to be fully prepared to get started. Do what you can, dive in, and have fun. That last bit is the most important. No one is tracking how many rules you get right or wrong.
Ok sounds like a plan just wanted to understand a bit i think I’ll figure it out
One more question how does playing online work
This is a good overview: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
In short, you need a way to communicate. Everything else is optional.
Ok thanks all y’all are so helpful I appreciate it Hopefully she ends up liking it that way we can play more if not I’ll just start in my own lol 😂
Good luck!
Thank you
Yea may take time I just started and I've not found a group yet but may take time
Yea will see where it goes it’s gonna be me my daughter and wife for now
hi im looking for a dnd group im new so it would be nice if u could teach me along the way
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
It would help your future DM if you have a general understanding of the game first.
I'm still reading up played fist edition was back but a lot has changed
So ive been reading this book (the players handbook) if i pick that Tiefling and then ranger do i always start wirh 2 swords and a bow with 20 arrows???
From what I read I believe so but someone more up on current edition can probably clarify better
Good evening all
Thank you, i was trying to work it all out as simple weapons are listed so i wondered if i can have crossbows n daggers
Equipment
You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background:(a) scale mail or (b) leather armor
(a) two shortswords or (b) two simple melee weapons
(a) a dungeoneer’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack
A longbow and a quiver of 20 arrows
You always have the longbow and arrows, whereas you can pick A or B from each line of equipment.
Ah i see, so silly questions again could i have 2 staffs, spears then?
Quarterstaffs and spears are simple melee weapons, so you could have two of one, not one of each (my read). Whether your DM lets you do otherwise is another story.
Oki doki. So i might stick with 2 swords or 2 daggers then,
Swords are not simple weapons if you mean longswords. Daggers are.
Just a little tip for new players , if you find a dm who can't answer your questions, doesent have an idea for a story, and is just "playing the game to play it" this is not how dms are supposed to be..find a better dm
I'd say 'two simple melee weapons' doesn't exclude them being two different simple melee weapons.
Although you don't have to have a 500 page document detailing the world, you should have SOME idea of the world your players are joining and as a dm it is your responsibility to help players with any questions they have...
But that's more a debate for #dnd-rules but I have never seen that reading of it
Fair. I think I see it being "two shortswords" means that, if you choose another weapon, it's another pair, but it doesn't have to be.
Thats ok ill pick 2 daggers and a bow, id love to go handbows and a soear
Is that to me???
Hi friends, completely new to D&D, haven't even made a character yet, but just diving in and wanted to say hello 👋
Hey
Hey there and welcome!

does magic damage ignore resistance?
It depends on the type or resistance. Basic magic still gets resisted by some things but like- fire resistance works on fire magic- but not force magic-
Kinda a weird way of me putting it, sorry
For Certian Monsters they may have resistances to Weapon Damage (Bludgeoning, Piercing and Slashing) however if you have a magical weapon (Which will say in the description) It usually can over come the resistances. (Usually)
itll say "resistance to bludgeoning, piercing and slashhing damage to nonmagical weapons" if magical weapons ignore that resistance
Hi, I would start by reading the basic rules, at least the first four chapters on character creation. Then you can try making a character on DnD Beyond

Hello everybody am new to dnd have read some of the rules
Welcome!
Hi
Welcome!
How long on average does it take would you say to find a dm and party to play with?
Took me a couple years to find my “forever” group, but I played a lot of games along the way.
If you have a group of friends wanting to play it could be literally seconds (but one of you will need to be the DM)
Otherwise it can take a while to find the right game and group.
But check out #find-a-game to learn about our various "find a game" channels and how to use them.
yeah I looked through it and I put in a request for looking for DM, only thing is I don't have anyone to play with at all, in that case would it be smarter for me to go to #looking-for-players ?
