whatever you find the most compelling.
Spellcasters are a bit more complicated than, lets say a Barbarian, but not so much that a beginner cant pick them up
Ok thank you
Any class in the players handbook is good enough for new players, the first few levels are really intended to introduce you into the class mechanics. Artificer, which was introduced in a later book, would be my only suggestion to be wary of, but if you really wanted to play it, go for it. It just might be a bit harder to start off
me and my friends are getting into dnd, and we’ve decided i should be dm. i’ve read the rules and watched videos a bunch of times, but i’m still confused on just about everything
Haha no worries! That will probably last until right around...session 3!
Are you planning to play a published adventure?
yes
Picked one yet?
not yet, i’m not too sure which ones would be beginner friendly
There's three specifically written for the starter or essentials kits, which are for new players
My favourite is Lost Mine of Phandelver, which is free on dnd beyond. Levels 1-5, nice classic "bit of everything" adventure. A new full campaign based off it will also be published in September.
The newer edition of the starter kit has Dragons of Stormwreck isle, which is levels 1-3 and is a little more like a video game "tutorial island"
Finally, there's Dragon of Icespire Peak from the Essentials Kit, which is a little more freeform, and while some swear by it, I think it's better if you feel confident or are moving from another system
i might have a look into this one
Here's the campaign on dnd beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
And here's an official video where they play it with some new players: https://youtu.be/hgNRe76o4_8
You'll find loads of other videos about it, but I like that one because it really shows a lot of the beginner questions that will come up
If you have any general questions, here or #dm-discussion are the best place to ask, but if you want any story/mission based ones, you'll need #1029835597168267384 - any mention of story points is considered a potential spoiler, so it has to go in that channel
thank you 🙏
Great questions above. To those I'd add:
- What elements of the game (combat, exploration, social encounters) does the DM like most? Least? How do those preferences impact the game? For instance, combat is my least favorite pillar, so I lean less on it, but I try to incorporate it as best I can if the group wants combat as well.
- How challenging should you expect combat to be?
- What style of game are you playing? A political intrigue campaign is very different from a dungeon-crawl, for example. Whatever the answer, you can ask follow-up questions to clarify the DM's intent.
I'd personally suggest a barbarian, fighter, or rogue to start, because learning the rules and picking spells can get a little overwhelming
In a way, this is a correct order. If you want to see how a spellcaster can work, usually a Warlock or a Bard is a good idea to pick up a spellcaster
please help i dont know how to find people to play with

Anybody know what Sourcebook adds the 'Additional Attunement Slot' Feat?
It's an artificer feature but I think Tasha's would unlock it.
My friends Eladrin Sorcadin has it
Maybe it's a homebrew feat?
It shows up in one of the campaigns the Westmarch server I play on has for content sharing, apparently, but it's full
Homebrew feats can be shared in a campaign
if the DM has it as homebrew made somewhere, it gets shared with everyone in that campaign
We have a few campaigns that are missing things to be fair
like, the DM cant even turn off the sharing unless they remove the feat from their collection
So that might explain it
We have multiple campaigns set up to content share for characters but some are missing bits
Sounds like a "talk to your DM" and figure out what should be available and if/how to use it.
Yeah the DM I asked had no idea 😂 I'll speak to one of the others
Thanks for your helps guys ❤️
Gotta be careful spotting real stuff and homebrew stuff sometimes!
I figured it out, my dumb self didn't have 'Homebrew Content' ticked for my character
More than likely it was in all campaigns but I didn't realise it wasn't ticked lmao
(The official guidelines for homebrew actually explicitly warn against adding attunement slots. 👀)
Hey hey, super newbie here. I know just enough to be dangerous. going to try to run a starter campaign with family this weekend......
We will be in person, but im wondering if we should use software to help ability checks and rolls, etc
That's up to you. D&D generally involves arithmetic, so if you think that'd present an obstacle to folks, use whatever supplements you need.
Good luck! You can use software, which may also make it easier to keep track. That said, doing it the old fashioned way can help the principles and ideas sink in better.
Is there a recommended software or tool for in person?
papers and pencils for sure
I like having my laptop up with DnDBeyond loaded and Discord/Avrae to run quick lookups and do dice rolls.
A simple calculator like the one on a phone usually is sufficient
I think the real difference is simply becoming more familiar with where to find your modifiers, saves and spell DCs
that is the main issue. making sure i know what modifers to add, etc
Once they are familiar with where to find their stat, it goes smoothly
Pre-game i suggest everyone double check their character sheet. Make sure all the skill modifiers are filled out, saves, and know your spell Dc (for casters)
All the skills are alphabetical on the standard character sheet and DND beyond
That should help
The math is fairly simple once u know where to find what you’re adding - just punch it into the calculator if needed
i also recommend going over everyone’s dice. What is a d4, 6, 8, 12, 20 etc. new players will offen forget
I'm trying to understand this game but holy crap it's difficult.
You can also help cut down a bit what they need to focus on if you distinguish between whats likely needed in noncombat situations vs combat
Walkin around town for example, theyre just gonna be looking at the left side of the sheet with all the skill modifiers
In combat, itll be the middle of their sheet with actions, weapon dice, etc
It will get easier. Sharp learning curve but i think alot of the “work” is before you start playing. Gettingyour sheet filled out and becoming used to it us probably the bulk of the work.
In-game, you’ll pick it up as the game flows
The youngest is 12, but smart. I plan to run the LMoP first ambush with them a day before. good practice for me and them maybe
Are there any specific areas you're having trouble with?
Trying to get that stuff figured out, haven't ever played an actual game though I really want to.
D&D is basically a collaborative story telling game. A dungeon master (DM) sets the stage and asks the players what their character would do in that situation (this is where the role-playing comes from - players playing the role of a character). The player tells the DM what their character wants to do, the DM decides what rules are in effect in that context and if a dice roll is needed. The players roll the dice as directed, add any modifiers and bonuses depending on what skill or attack is being used. The DM figures out if that succeeds or not. And thus the story gets told with everyone participating.
I'm mainly just trying to figure out making my own character and stuff, having abilities and all of that. I don't want to use one of the presets.
Respectfully, then, it's no surprise you're struggling.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
D&D is essentially an engine. If you're trying to build a replacement part for that engine without first understanding how the engine works and how that part is intended to function within it, you're going to run into performance issues.
I'd strongly recommend sticking to the official options while you're in the learning phase.
I've made a character on some website already.
I had a story all set up aswell.
All of the stats and things to roll for is what's confusing me mainly.
Well let's narrow it down then. What's one stat you haven't been able to calculate yet?
Can I send you a picture of the sheet thing that I made?
You can send a link to a picture here, sure.
It won't let you upload an image directly.
I've already sent it to your DMs
Oh, if it's on D&D Beyond, just send us a link to that.
D&D Beyond already does all the calculations for you, though.
So is there something specific you still had questions about?
I think there was a miscommunication
When you said you wanted to make your own character some may have interpreted that as homebrew
I believe what you meant was not using a pre-made character, not using a preexisting class
Yes
Yeah, I totally misunderstood. 😅
I just don't know what to do with all of the information that's on my screen.
I just have to experience a game firsthand to understand better i'm guessing..
Your character sheet seems fine to begin with, but there is no equipment. Have you gotten to that part of the character builder?
As a fighter, you get certain equipment to start with, such as weapons and armor
Your background will also give stuff
I put stuff in but it didnt add it to my thing
Thats fine - just finish the build in Ddb, and how it works is the next step
After your selections, dont hit “next”
There should be a Specific button that says “add equipment”
There's a video here that walks though the basics of how a character sheet works.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChYPIdCrBdE

You definitely want to add your starting equipment.
And I will say that being human isn't really doing you any favors here.
But the rest of it looks just fine.
I wanted it to be that way, feels odd being any of the other races.
And what would the starting equiptment be?
I don't want to go overboard and give myself some op crap
If you click on Inventory, there's an option to add starting equipment.
That'll walk you through it.
And human's definitely not a wrong choice.
If that's what you want to be, then go for it. 👍
Okay
It just means you'll have to wait a few levels to really capitalize on it.
The available starting equipment is basic stuff, you wont be OP, no worries there
So my advice for later: when you get to your first Ability Score Increase at level 4, focus on turning your odd-numbered ability scores into even-numbered ones.
What equipment should I use for the character I have, or am I supposed to only have the starter gear at the beginning.
Okaty
It'll give you a few options based on your class and your background.
So if you just pick between those options, everything's good.
Is there no like fist weapon or something.
Any creature can make an unarmed strike. It does 1+STR damage by default.
It should already be listed on your character sheet under Actions.
Using weapons is generally more effective, especially for a Fighter.
Question about spells:
Example: Charm Person (Save/atk: WIS 11)
Does the caster roll against AC or is it automatically cast?
If target rolls WIS equal or higher to 11 the spell fails?
When Charm Person says this...
It must make a Wisdom saving throw
That means the target of your spell needs to a roll a Wisdom saving throw.
If their result is equal to or greater than your spellcasting modifier (11), then they succeed on the saving throw.
In some cases, that might mean they're entirely uneffected by the spell.
Which is the case with Charm Person.
In other cases, they might take half damage instead of full, or have some other reduced effect.
but the caster, never rolls?
Nope.
Not for Charm Person, no.
What class would be good for unarmed
Not when a save is involved, only when it's an attack roll.
For other spells, the caster might still roll for damage, even when there's a saving throw involved.
Ok. I did it right. lol, let me see if i understand one of those damage ones. one sec
Burning Hands is a good example.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/burning-hands
(And one of my favorite pictures. ❤️🔥)
Vicious Mockery would be the same, but if the throw fails, then 1d4 and disadvantage
If you wanted to do unarmed as a Fighter, you could take a look at the Unarmed Fighting fighting style.
That sets your unarmed strikes to do 1d6+STR instead (or 1d8+STR if both hands are empty).
You got it.
Alternatively, you could take a look at playing a monk instead.
ok. what if it doesnt have the "must do a saving throw"? or do most spells have that?
It might direct you to make an attack instead.
Spells with usually specify the caster makes an attack roll or the target makes a saving throw.
In which case, you would roll and compare the result to the target's AC.
Fire Bolt, for example: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/fire-bolt
ok. i was totally overcomplicating that
Magic Missile is notable because it just deals damage automatically. Neither side rolls (except for damage).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/magic-missile
And of course, there's utility spells that don't involve any rolls, either.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/message
But ultimately, each spell will tell you what needs to be rolled, if anything.
Fire bolt:
1d20 +int vs AC?
1d20+Int modifier+proficiency bonus (if you're a wizard, for example).
Your spell attack bonus is listed in your class. It's typically your spellcasting modifier plus your proficiency bonus.
But yeah, if you roll equal to or greater than the target's AC, that's a hit, so you roll for damage.
You’re playing a wizard, I take it?
You might want to prioritize your INT more.
+1 is pretty low, even at level 1.
Oh me? actually not. just trying to learn. Actually its a bard. I just did random rolls.
but i think my rolls are pretty low. i just left them as is
Ah! All good, then.
The overview of classes here shows what a given class's primary ability is (or abilities in some cases), so if/when possible, make them the highest. https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
yeah actually I think i messed up. I can assign which stat i want where
You can, but some folks prefer to use the rolls in order. For as many rules as there are, there's also lots of cutomization possible in the game too.
Ahhh. Ok. I did it in order. Thought that was most fair.
Some DMs don't even use rolling, so a lot of people recommend using point-buy or standard array. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Ultimately, it doesn't matter what you do if you're creating a character to understand the process. You might need to make adjustments anyway once you actually join a game/group.
For those that do assign the stats in order, you probably want to then choose your class based on your strengths, according to that table above.
Im trying to fill out a character sheet for a drow rogue and i could really use help
are you using dnd beyond?
Yes
Drow aren't free on D&D Beyond. You have to unlock them by either buying the Player's Handbok or individually on D&D Beyond ($2)
lemme check that out
alternatively you can use a paper sheet or get one digitally
Where are the drow in the marketplace?
PHB
Go to Marketplace > Store > Sourcebooks > Player's Handbook > and from there you can buy individual things like playable races and sub-classes for about $2 each.
There is not a players handbook section under marketplace for me
?phb
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is an official sourcebook containing the full core rules of the game. The book is everything a player needs to create heroic characters for Dungeons & Dragons the world’s greatest roleplaying game. Some of this content is available for free as a part of the Basic Rules. Learn more: https://dndbeyond.link/discordPHB
^ That link should take you where to see the purchasing options.
Thank you
If I am using a paper sheet is it okay to copy the information on the website onto my paper or does it differ at all
The DnDBeyond digital book stuff allows you to use the material inside of DnDBeyond's character sheet tool which can make it easy to build characters. But I guess if you buy the whole Players Handbook on DnDBeyond you can then copy the bits and pieces you need to your paper sheet.
The information should be the same (except DnDBeyond's info should be the most up-to-date/accurate version since it's hard to make corrections to an already printed book).
You can also just print your D&D Beyond sheet as a PDF.
Ok I just Wana say something for new players, if you can't make the time commitment it takes to play dnd maybe dnd isn't the game for you, I've had 2 new players tell me.they really ajt to play....then they play 1 session and don't have time.for the next one, make sure your schedule actually allows for such a commitment before telling a dm your ready because it's bs if they go through all the trouble of helping you make a character and everything if your gonna wind up not playing!
Nah, I disagree. Sometimes things happen. It sucks, but that's life. Sorry about your group coming apart, though; I don't want to downplay that.
People have real life issues that comes up, be it sickness, family issues, etc.
Health/Real Life > D&D > LARPing
Yeah life makes things hard sometime. I started a spelljammer game that we ended up playing one session and then things happened and I fell into a depressive spiral and had to prioritize. Yes it sucks, but sometimes you just don't know
I lost three players due to personal real life issues (none of my business what they were) so I just got three new players. There are always players out there willing to replace ones who can't play at your table.
im taking the spot of my friends brother in their campaign since hes going to college, im hoping to get the schedule avalibility in advance from employmenty
Both sides should respect each other. A DM puts in work to prepare for the table; players should plan accordingly
Real life happens to everyone but everyone at the table needs to understand that dnd is a commitment to each other
Yea I'm not trying to sound like a jerk , it's just if players can't make it they need to inform me like as soon as possible and not the day before the next session cause I have to balance all the encounters and if there's 1 less person there will.be too many enemies /or they will.be really tough for the rest of the party to beat
just curious, is this online? or in person?
Are you asking specifically about Nightmare Factory’s game?
I send out a roll call poll on my private Discord server the day before the session so I know if there's quorum (minimum of three players) for the session to go ahead or be cancelled.
Things happen at the last minute. It's a fact of life.
sorry. yup
Unrelated but i didnt see various ways to heal in the basic rules. Online i saw: short/long rest, magic (potions/spells), and then healer feat/kit.
Is that the basic list? I assume you generally can't roll nature, find a plant, and heal?
There are no rules for that, no.
In addition to the ones you mentioned, though, there's a number of different class features that provide healing options.
A fighter's Second Wind, for example.
It’s my first time playing as a player and I want to play as a cleric in the grave domain. I have all of the domain spells and cantrips listed, but I don’t know how many spells other than those I get to learn and have on my spell sheet. I’ve tried looking online but I’ve gotten mixed answers.
You know all the spells available to you, you just choose which you prepare after every long rest, depending on your class
So, as a level one cleric, you know every single level one cleric spell, plus any given to you from domain
You just pick which you have access to each day
Ah, that makes sense. Does it work the same way for each level up and higher spell levels? We’re starting at level 5 so I have a few 2nd and 3rd level spells
You prepare the list of cleric spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the cleric spell list. When you do so, choose a number of cleric spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your cleric level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/cleric#Spellcasting-108
Yup, cantrips are the only ones locked in
Got it, thanks for your help!
Remember - dont just look at the subclass features, check the main class features as well
Hello everyone, I am relativley new to DnD, having played once and DM'd once, and am now looking for someone to play with. I've never played it online and do not know exactly how it works that way, but am fairly proficient with the game as laid out in the player's handbook. I was wondering how i would go about finding an online group and how online DnD games work. Thank you in advance!

eyooooooooooooo
i am relatively new to dnd, ive done a few small homebrew campaigns, but i wish to find new people to play with and to become friends with!

Quick question. I wouldn’t consider myself a beginner in the world of Dnd , but I would not consider myself super experience either. And in my area a nerd store is hosting a Dnd Al session from level 5 to 10 tomorrow. Not sure if I’m experienced enough to join the session. I really want to go and I think I can do pretty well, but I’m nervous it will be too advanced.
Any advice??
The folks in #adventurers-league can probably give you a better idea of what to expect, but I’d image they’ll accept players of any skill level.
Can anybody help me put together a character?
Bro just play it off and ask questions
Hello!
👋
Hi
Hey
I'm new and just made a player for DnD Beyond last night and have an interest is seeing where this'll go. Don't know much thought but it seems fun
Did you read the free Basic Rules yet?
👋
Yes and no. I got the gist of setting up the character and that they get perks that come with ones race and class
The whole 1d8 thing and d20 kinda has me a bit tripped up in trying to understand the hit point system and whatnot
1d8 refers to one 8 sided dice
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
If you have a 1d8 hit dice, that means that at first level you have 8 + con mod hp and at each subsequent level you roll 1d8 and add the result plus your con mod to your max hp
So if the 1d8 lands on a 5 it becomes a 13 and that'd be the damage I do?
No. Hit dice are for health
No, this is for your hp
Say if your constitution modifier is +2 and your hit dice is 1d8. At first level you would have 10 hp
im new to dnd can anyone teach me the rule and how it works
At level 2, you would roll 1d8. If for example you rolled a 3, your hp would increase by 5 up to 15

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
I'll do both
I have the app so I can read the basic rules there and watch the handbook helper on YouTube
@fleet field thanks
So far though I have a dragonborn who's a black dragon Druid
can anyone help me make a character which dice do i use to roll
Read the basic rules on character creation
For your ability scores I would recommend either Standard Array (15 – 14 – 13 – 12 – 10 – 8) or Point Buy rather than rolling.
Hello I have never played dnd before just got intrested in it after watching the movie can I still join campaigns?
Of course you can! If you check out #find-a-game it gives you the instructions on how to use the bot and appropriate channels to find a game. But as an FYI, we don't actually play games on this server.
I’m going to be DM for the first time tomorrow, is there anything I need to know?
First and foremost: have fun.
Some tips/advice for new DMs:
- Do have fun (not just the players, but you too)
- Don't stress about not memorizing all of the rules, that's what the rule books are for.
- As DM, you have final ruling. If you screw up and realize it, acknowledge it (retcon if you need) and move on.
- Prepare as much as you can but expect the unexpected from your players.
Thanks!
If you have any more questions / advice about DMing head over to #dm-discussion
I'm scared to start dnd. But I've always been so into it. Every aspect seems absolutely amazing to me, I just don't know where to start
Welcome! If you look up here (which is also in the pinned posts if you ever need to find it quickly) we have some resources to get you started. I recommend trying the short intro demo they have (they first link) as it does a phenomenal job of giving you and idea of how the game is played!
Thank you sm!
No problem! And feel free to ask questions. Many of us here are willing to help out!
Hi hi! I'm fairly new to dnd and as much as I played a knock off dnd game, I wanted to try making a dnd campaign as a new DM with some new dnd players. I wanted to ask if, as a player, does the starting* equipment affect the carry capacity? Or does the carry weight apply to specific things?
I'm still learning and developing the game currently and I'd like ask for help here as much as possible.
Carry capacity is determined by strength, and yes starting equipment has it's normal weight. This does mean that in rare circumstances a starting player can be over encumbered, particularly if using the variant encumbrance rules, usually it's not an issue
Ok thank you ( ^ ^)
Do you guys know like where to find a dm?
#looking-for-players is a good place to start
Alternative, if you post in #750812887697588356 a DM might find you
Follow the instructions in #find-a-game in order to figure out how to post
Thanks
Hello. So I’m completely new to D&D. I have a character and a sheet for them, what do I do now? Do I find a dm? Do I get into a campaign? It’s really overwhelming haha..

If spell casting ability is 16. +2 prof. A target would need a save throw >18 to succeed?
You mean your spellcasting stat is 16?
Yes
8+prof+ability mod
Spell save DC is 8+stat mod+proficiency bonus. It’s usually around 13 at level 1.
Ok. Thank you.
Ok. Found it. Basic book has saving throws in two areas. I needed the spellcasting chapter.
Hello guys I'm new here I'm very new to dnd too only play a little bit with, my cousins I'm interested in joining a dnd game on here
Ty
Read over the instructions in #find-a-game for navigating that part of the server.
How do I multiclass in DND beyond?
You choose the new class when you level up.
Hit the Builder icon (the anvil at the right side), scroll down to Add Another Class.
Hello.
Is it a good idea to subclass from druid to warlock from level 5?
You mean multiclass (subclass is part of the same class, multiclass is taking another class)
You need a minimum of 13 Cha and 13 Wis to multiclass druid to warlock
https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/customization-options#Prerequisites
Depends what you plan to get out of the two classes. It'll take you longer to get the sub-class of druid if you're starting off as level 1
I never play online, but have play in person. Well only for session because school shut down. So I how do I join a group?
Check out #find-a-game
Cool thanks
For a newcomer, I’d generally recommend not multiclassing unless you have a very specific reason for doing so.
Is wall of water any good in a combat heavy setting?
Battlefield control spells are only as good as the user and their party’s coordination. Understand what you’re doing will affect everyone
Look for local game stores that may host games. facebook, craigslist, meetup, warhorn - check for groups online.
The Adventurer’s League is the official organized play structure , by WOTC. There are chapter almost everywhere
I hope this is the correct channel.
I'm pretty new to DnD and I have a question how "Find Familiar" exactly works.
1st: I and my Familiar have their own Initiative, correct?
2nd: Can I as a wizard cast a Spell in my Turn and can my Familiar cast a Spell (in Touch reach) in "familiars Turn" ?
Your familiar doesn't cast spells but rather you cast a spell through it.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/find-familiar
Finally, when you cast a spell with a range of touch, your familiar can deliver the spell as if it had cast the spell. Your familiar must be within 100 feet of you, and it must use its reaction to deliver the spell when you cast it. If the spell requires an attack roll, you use your attack modifier for the roll.
This might be inconsequential, but as a DM when you roll for something to happen to your players, do you guys roll a save for your players, or a check against them? As in, do you look for a high or low roll?
Players should roll for their characters, such as saving throws and ability checks.
Do you have an example? If it's something else acting on them you should be rolling a check for it, or have them roll a save
That's fair actually. Even if you're rolling for something you're keeping secret from them?
As DM you can roll opposing rolls for monsters, such as a grapple check.
If it's affecting them via a roll, it's not that secret anymore is it?
Such as a monster's stealth check? Yes.
If the PCs are stealthing, they roll their Stealth check opposed to a DC (such as a monster's Passive Perception)
I was thinking more in the line of ||a false hydra growing a new head||
Ugh... Sorry but it's a meme that requires a buy-in from the players to meta-knowledge and "forget"
Putting one in your game you mean? We're all rookies so I'm quite sure they've never heard of it
Perhaps not using it as new DMs and players?
Again, it requires a buy-in from the players to play along with that.
Well regardless, I was jist wondering if you'd roll a check on behalf of the thing, or a save for your players. I just meant it as a hypothetical
DM: "The storekeep isn't there."
Player: "But we just left the store a second ago..."
DM: "The storekeep isn't there."
spooky background music plays
You the DM don't roll for the player characters otherwise you're taking agency away from the players.
I understand where you're coming from, but my question was about something else
You asked about rolling for the players
do you guys roll a save for your players, or a check against them? As in, do you look for a high or low roll?
Indeed
You can ask them to roll a save, then say "interesting" and audibly record that info and say nothing about it that's always fun
Thanks! That's all I wanted to know

But if you’ve got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
They can be. Depends on the type of game they want to run.
Absolutely
a.
You can run modules or homebrew
i think dnd encourages its players to tweak rules to their fitting
as its intended for people to enjoy it as a game
You can make the game whatever you and other players and DMs want it to be
You guys are super cool and nice
most of us try to be and thank you
could you provide an example of what you're thinking of? It may be possible to reflavor existing options, but either way chatting with the DM about it is always a good way to move forward on ideas
Sounds like a Rune Knight to me.
That’s a Fighter subclass.
They add magical runes to their equipment, which gives them special abilities.
there are also some subclasses that can learn spellcasting which you could just flavor through your weapons probably as well. But Rune Knight does fit that perfectly
thx
Never played dnd before but I have books to help. I’ve been really interested in Barb and I was hoping to get some insight on barb’s play style from people that played one before. I also never played with a group and I don’t wanna embarrass myself cause I’m still a beginner at this 😂
They act quickly and recklessly usually, vulnerable to things with saving throws but they can take a lot of physical damage. Usually you have no ranged ability to speak of, but you can hit hard and take a lot of hits. They're usually only good at a couple of specific things outside of combat
When I was looking at some things I was thinking if it was possible to play it in a support way. Not like heal and stuff but increase teams attack speed. Debuff the enemy in some way.
Pretty sure some of the totems can do that, if not Paladin is an option
That is really outside the Barbarian class’s reach. They are there to take and do damage. Support is something you’d need another class for
The Ancestral Guardian might have the best tank ability in the game + a reaction ability that can reduce damage
If you are looking for a martial that has support abilities, you’re probably looking at Paladin
Battlemaster subclass Fighter can also do it somewhat. And there are a few martial archetypes that get magic access as well that might work. But yeah Barbarians will always be overshadowed by spellcasters for support options
Hey im new to dnd, could someone point me in the right direction and where to find a party to play with, im willing to pay if needed
Have you read the basic rules first?
No, im completely new but i have played rpgs and arpgs and mmos my whole life so im interested
You should probably read the basic rules or at least the first 4 chapters on character creation before jumping in to the deep end

Hi ☺️ so I'm wondering if anyone knows a good way to use DnD Beyond alone or with Discord for online play? Me and some of my friends have scheduling issues so we're gonna try online instead ❤️
You can use it in conjunction with Avrae!
So when I looked at that it seemed complicated and had a lot of uneeded text
There’s a good article here that covers some of the more popular online options.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Holy my bad guys I was getting the name wrong. I meant to say Bard
My dyslexia is showing lmao. I was wondering if I can get any tips on how to play a Bard from people that have played one before 💀
Your choice of subclass can make a fair bit of difference for how a bard plays, but commonly bards aren’t going to be in the thick of things dealing damage and absorbing hits. Their bardic inspiration along with a lot of their spell list focus on support, whether that’s healing, inflicting debuffs on the enemy, creating areas of effect on the field, and/or buffing allies.
You can probably get more details from the folks in #character-discussion.

@lone bolt ty do you think i'll find a game tonight?
(that is a bot) check out #find-a-game
same day game will be harder than scheduling one in advance but there are a few posted here and there
Generally will stay in range and debuff the enemy while doling out inspiration to damage dealers to ensure hits. Backup healer when anyone goes down. At higher levels, many of tricks of an arcane caster.
subclasses will change your play style. Swords and valors can swing a weapon. Creation bard can do whacky stuff with a summon
damn ok, IM NEW idk really how to play, im not very serous either. id like some people to play with

hi
Finding a group can take time, finding a group that you are comfortable with and staying together for a long time can take even longer.
So I made a character that is lawful evil. Is there like anything I should be aware of as far as being in a party of lawful good people?
Some DMs may not allow that character
You should discuss it with the rest of the group beforehand.
If they rest of them aren’t on board (or even if they’re reluctant), then it’s probably not going to work.
You should sit down with your table and work out your party dynamics with them. This is a game that requires collaboration between those playing the game (that's both DM and Players) and to make a character that's the opposite of all the others may not be conducive to the level of collaboration. That's why communication of expectations and willingness to compromise with eachother so that everyone at the table is enjoying their time.
hey guys! i'm a new dm and i need some tips on how to get my players more engaged. some of them are just not doing anything unless i ask them specifically. is there something i'm doing wrong?
How are they not engaged? Are they looking at their phones all the time?
How well do you know your players? (Is this friends or family IRL, or strangers online?)
Whatever the answers above, paying attention to the quieter people at the table and giving them direct opportunities to contribute is already a good practice.
You could take that a step further by encouraging your more active players to do the same.
they're just... not doing anything. i guess a lot of them had valid excuses; but one of them were literally in another country at the time and still participated. (a lot)
they just stay quiet.
just thought of a fun way to put it; they're the "shy" kids in class, they never raise their hand and i'm not sure if i should want them to raise their hand more
they're friends IRL
i see, tysm for the advice
The introduction for the DMG outlines a few ways different players might prefer to engage with the game.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/introduction#KnowYourPlayers
You might recognize your friends in one or more of those, and use it to guide where the story goes.
If they're new, they may feel awkward, so give it time. Asking them direct, leading questions can help. (Not "What do you do now?" but "You can X, Y, or Z. Which would you like to do?")
There's lots of advice for encouraging shy players you might take a look at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nx6sRk3jIc
https://dungeonvault.com/encouraging-shy-dnd-players/
You can also just talk to your players before or after the game and ask them why they're being so quiet, not in an accusatory way but in a "I want this game to be fun, and I'm not sure you're having a good time."
i was a bit scared to "railroad" them, but that makes a lot of sense. thank you!
i'm running a pre-written campaign so i'm pretty much just trying to follow the storyline and improvising anything they do that's not covered by the book; should i add stuff to it like mentioned in the dm's guide?
It's absolutely fair to worry about railroading, but think of it like training wheels; you take them away once they're comfortable making decisions proactively.
interesting analogy! that makes a lot of sense, thank you so much
Adding to a pre-written adventure can enchance it, but don't feel like you need to. It's really dependent on what the table enjoys, which includes YOU as well as the players.
ah i see. i'll look into what i can do for my players :D
i read the article you sent me; i think i could implement some stuff into the campaign that might push some players to roleplay more! i'm really excited to see what i can do next session
Don't push them; some folks are content to be audience members more than active players. If that's a problem, talk to them and see if you can't work out a compromise.
If you think the advice above helps, great, but be sure your table is on board with it too! It's a social game, so be responsive to the needs of the table.
Try ending it with “or something else” instead.
“Do you want to head to the tavern, ask around town, or something else?”
That gives them both clear direction, and the freedom to forge their own path.
that's such a great idea!
i'm worried that i'll reveal something that might not have been obvious before to them; like there's a secret room, and i say "do you want to go upstairs, search around for any secrets, or something else" (or something around those lines) and it's crafted so taht they can tell there's something to be found
maybe i'm just paranoid?
You’d generally want to phrase it based on what the characters know.
oh i'm dumb it was that simple
Even if you give some stuff away, it's not the end of the world. It's a game; don't worry if you make a bad call. It's gonna happen.
alright, thanks!

Hello. Where can I go if I want to join a session 0?
What does Plnv/Plns mean?
I have to send Plnv/Plns as a part of a character information but I don’t know what it is.
Where are you seeing this?
hi
Hi
do you play dnd?
Yeah
are you a rogue?
cuz im a rogue
does anyone know if party members can kill each other
PvP is up to the DM and the players if they agreed upon it before the game starts.
D&D isn't made for PvPing. It's meant to be a collaborative game, not against each other.
just checking
Personally, I ban PvPing at my game because it wastes my time.
yeah my Barbarian buddy keeps on threatening my death so im making sure he cant kill me
Can he kill you via mechanics? Yes. Should he kill you, and is that OK to do at a table for a game about collaborative storytelling? That depends on your group, and if you are ok with that and want to play the game that way
…from who?
Again, can you steal 2000 gold from another player via mechanics? Yes. Should you? See my above post
im a rogue😎
tomfoolery
allowing for rp is fine, but not to the point where your rogue steals 2000gp from a party member
a chest
A CHEST
...a mimic?
why the zoypé is there 2000gp in the chest in the middle of nowhere
i took said money and did not share
What level are you at?
what is your dnd group on???
it was in a spider den though
WHY IS THERE 2000 GP IN A SPIDER DEN???
i was at lv 2 then
Has your dm ever played before?
your dm is on something
im dnd's god.
even if its to be shared, 500gp for each party member is stupid. AT LEVEL 2.
That’s like a level 5 amount at minimum
ive got 300gp now
:(
you have almost a years worth of money
no your dm is either very inexperienced or just cooking something
and me and my party fought and killed a spectator last session
your messages make me concerned for your party's mental wellbeing
💀.
wtf is a dragonling???
a baby dragon
Your dm sounds so incredibly high
hes fine
Giving out that much gold and letting your barb fight you
are you sure you aren't just hallucinating a dnd game
and letting you kill a spectator
i dont see what's wrong with this
criminal charges and imprisonment go brr
honestly
thing is, they usually lead to beholders
Oh I thought you meant spectator as in crowd spectator
me too lol
the what
beholder at level 2 sounds like a recipe for TPK
what's a beholder
egotistic balls with 11 eyes that shoot rays
Did you mean the monster called the spectator or a spectator in a crowd?
certain doom
im lv 5 now. each chapter, we level up
damn
monster
Wut?
so chapters
I think you're confused about the definition of what a "session" is.
How do you have multiple sessions per session?
"Ok guys you killed such and such time to end and go home" x2
yeah
Do you mean go home in the campaign or irl?
Irl
Ah okay
your dm is weird
No that is a session then
hes crazy
So how do you have multiple sessions per session?
we have different adventures
So you do multiple adventures per session
its multiple plans per each time i go to the dm's house
like "we do this we do that"
again and again
Each time you go to the DMs house is called a session
yeah
So like you go into multiple dungeons each time for example?
i guess
Okay
theyre different dungeons though
Yeah that’s normal
You go on different adventures throughout the session
So do you level up every dungeon or every session?
session
we end that session and start a new one
not every time though
that only happened once
That's pretty fast...
i dont care though
My players have only gone up two levels in a year and a half.
They control the pace.
different dm, different journey
honestly I would wanna run a campaign for you
just to see what the hell you would do
She's offering to DM for you.
cough mass genocidecough
Yeah, I wouldn't DM to you...
good
I love dm'ing problem players
im good though
You seem to have had a very… nonstandard intro to dnd
the most sane thing you've said so far honestly
and my bard friend killed himself (ingame) hes alive though
whos that snake guardian of the forest?
i killed that snake i think
Do you guys know of any useful resources for a new DM? Something like a reference sheet (e.g. for the typical amount of gold to give to a party of a certain level) would be grand
Also if you guys have any tips for implementing/balancing an alchemy system that'd be even better!
here is an alchemy system i think might fit into dnd
of course, the ingredients and other specifics should probably be changed, since deepwoken is not a TTRPG game, but the core mechanic (one ingredient has 1 major effect and 1 minor effect) is pretty neat and is kinda simple.
Nice, thanks! Seems like a pretty common way to run alchemy. My player wants to run a modified version of this system. Maybe some of you have used it before and have some useful insights? http://www.alchemyfordnd.com/

tips for beginners?
Read/skim the game rules to get a feel for the mechanics (free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules), learn how to create a character and learn how it works mechanically, maybe watch some videos/livestreams of folks playing D&D so you can see the mechanics in action, then find a group to join to play D&D.
Read the basic rules, understand your character sheet, and most importantly have fun

Hey everyone, I'm not necessarily new, but not super experienced and I am trying to set up a new campaign starting in a couple weeks or so. Any good websites to buy the books or download pdf files or anything like that?
I bought all mine (digitally) on D&D Beyond.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/
You can check out the free Basic Rules if you want to see how the digital books are laid out.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
digital dnd books are generally better as its easier to access and the refund/book to money policies are more straightforward
i think?
Not sure what you mean by “book to money policies”.
But D&D Beyond doesn’t generally provide refunds.
(Which I guess is straightforward. 😅 )
Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds also sell digital copies, but I don’t know anything about their refund policies.
Most Fantasy grounds modules can be bought through steam, which has pretty flexible return policies
I have my first game this evening! First since about 1984 when I played Warhammer Fantasy! (And only one game them). My son is DMing, his first time doing this role. No idea what to expect but I believe the objective is to have fun first?
Have fun, make the DM panic, kidnap a goblin, accidently solve the plot through unexpected means, yep.
Also don't forget to slaughter every NPC you come across. I hear it's really popular
can someone teach me how to play
I like to confirm. A nat 20 roll on a cantrip like fire bolt is a crit?
Yes

But if you have any specific questions, ask away!
There are tons of DM resources out there. What specific ones to recommend really depends on what you need. For the gold question, just Googling “dnd gold per level” gives a number of possible discussions, especially on Reddit. You can assemble your own references this way.
The Treasure Tables in the DMG might also help you there.

Hello! It is my first time posting here; I am a relatively new player and was asked if I would ever be interested in DMing a game. I was suggested that because I am known to write stories and usually complicated ones, but the idea of being a DM kind of scares me to be fair, but I don't want that to stop me from trying. Before I delve deeper into my DMing route, I wanted to know if any experienced DMs have any tips so as to make the experience easier for both my players and me. Thank you!
There’s an article here with some good advice for first-timers.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/159-starting-strong-at-your-first-dungeons-dragons
Don’t worry about getting things wrong, though. It can and will happen, no matter how long you’ve been doing it.
And if you set the right expectations — if everyone in your group understands that you’re all learning this together — then it shouldn’t be an issue.
It’s okay to pause the game in the middle to look up a rule or ask in #dnd-rules. It’s okay to ask your players what they think is a fair way to handle something. And it’s okay to just make up a rule to keep the game moving, the look up the answer after the game ans share it with the group.
My generalized DM advice: #dnd-newcomers message
Ultimately, I think it's good to take advantage of the resources available (there's a ton of advice in blogs and on YouTube), but don't let "Not knowing how" stop you from doing. That's how learning happens: you try a thing before you know exactly how to do it.
At the end of the day, as long as you and your group are having fun, then you’re doing it the right way.
Thank you for the resources @harsh fjord and @smoky adder 😄
I have a PDF of DM resources I can send you, but I wouldn't want you to be overwhelmed with info. I think that kind of thing can paralyze some folks into inaction.
Oooh, trust me, I am already slightly overwhelmed with information. But thank you, perhaps in the future, I might need some extra insight with that 🙂
The core of D&D is:
The DM describes the situation.
The players describe what they want to do.
If needed, dice are rolled.
The DM describes the results.
The rules just help everyone act with shared understanding. If you and your friends can manage that core, regardless of the minutiae of the rules, you can play!

Hi
Ahoy!
I'm here to play dnd
Cool, check the Dyno Bot post just a few above, it has the starter resources, and if you have any questions, just ask.
If you want, I can give it a look over.
Don't be surprised when you join a game, if the DM wants you to make changes, or even make a whole new character to fit a slot in the party that they want filled.
Sure, and if you want to hang on to find a table that is eager to get a caster, then a Sorcerer will be very fine.
So your stats are 15 across the board, and that's not going to be good for you. Not even quite sure how you came up with those!
I just have no idea what im doing :(
You also don't have all the spells you should have as a Level 1 Sorcerer
Its okay! That's what the channel is for
Can you help fix it
For your ability scores, I’d suggest using Standard Array or Point Buy instead of rolling.
What
If your DM wants you to roll, they’ll have you do so.
There are three main ways to get ability scores:
- Standard Array. This means 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8, and you choose which one is which
- Point buy, which means you have a certain "credit" and it costs more and more to increase each one higher
- rolling for stats, which you'll only be able to do with a DM.
This is also why finding a DM first is going to matter, because your DM might have a preferred method so everyone is working to the same, fair, system.
What?
The different methods for determining your ability scores are described here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
If you want to leave the scores as-is until you can discuss it with your DM, that’s fine, too.
Ooooh, I see what happened.
I just wanna fix my character sheet
Click on each of your ability scores, and delete the numbers you entered for “Other Modifier” and “Override Score”.
As for the spells, you have two 1st-level spells, and you have chosen spells that you are allowed to have. You also need to pick four cantrips, which are zero-cost spells.
And you have 24hp at lvl 1 somehow
You won't be able to totally fix it without a DM you are playing with. It's like preparing for a BBQ without knowing if you have a vegan, or a coeliac, or a dairy-allergic person coming: we can't tell you what to put on the menu until you know what it's for.
Huh? I'm seeing 9 HP?
Oh they have 15 temporary HP
Yeah that shouldn't be there 😄
Fixed
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1089904541140521003/1118414108799291452/IMG_3530.png when you make a character to help you click the beginner help box
You’ll want to remove the numbers here, too.
Ok
hi can someone check my character sheet
Sure, shoot.
Those stats seem high. How did you generate them?
rolled
On all of them?
Most DM's won't let you roll for stats unless they really trust you, or are supervising it. You are better off using Point Buy or Standard Array if you haven't agreed it with a DM.
ok that's fine
Equip your armour
cheers didn't notice that
What does the lf DM mean when it’s asking for game style? Im new and I thought dnd was just dnd
Do you want something more...heroic? Horror-inspired? Fantastical? What's a movie or game that you imagine DnD being like? It can be a huge range, from Lord of the Rings, Jason and the Argonauts, Troy, Never-ending Story, Alice in Wonderland, or Dracula
Better!
You have a very high Intelligence score. As a Sorcerer, You will want Charisma to be your highest, as this powers your spells.
Ah ok
How?
I’m not entirely sure, I only have played like 3 times in my girlfriends campaign and i don’t exactly understand much. Other than combat
For sorcserors it usually goes (spoilers if you would rather figure it out for yourself)
||From most to least:
Charisma, because it's your spellcasting stat
Con, because it's your health
Dexterity, because it's Armour class and Initiative
Int and Wis, for other skills like Perception or Arcana
Strength, which is not really useful for you at all||
So, do you prefer combat over acting out a scene? If so, then that's something you can say. Do you enjoy gothic horror? If not, say so! DOes a heist sound fun? What about a war? The DM just needs to get a handle on what you are looking for, whether you want to get super crunchy with rules and strategy, or if you want to quip and joke with NPCs.
Alright thank you :)
Yo just made a new character but I have a concern with his stats in mind would he be able to use a great sword https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/103084619
Thanks for the tips @harsh fjord @smoky adder !
Your character is proficient with martial weapons so yes.
If you want further feedback, you could post it in #character-discussion.
Alright I'll be sure to ask for tips there
Also thanks Undying really needed to know
DND gives the rules for running the story.
The story gives all those dice rolls a STYLE.
Its like picking the music for a road trip.
Imagine you'll be part f a story. What kind of story would you prefer?
there are common game styles in dnd like resource management, exploration/open world, dungeon crawl, city crawl, etc
basically what steve said
hey, ive heard of D&D, ive never played, it seems fun, can someone help me out?

Welcome
Where do I make a characters
You can use a site like D&D Beyond, or you can follow the Basic Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters) using a character sheet (https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets).
@dapper panther the handbook helper videos are probably the best place to start with the question you put on dnd-rules
Is there a way to find a newb friendly campaign
You could search using keywords in a given channel, but aside from that, if it isn't specified in the description, just ask!
Okay thanks so much
One thing I will mention, many tables are new player friendly. Just be honest about your experience level with them and go from there
How do you join a game on discord?

hello im roughly new but the only time sive played dnd have gone badly especially online, how do i find a good group?
also im bad at spelling
The best group will be a group of your friends who you already share a sense of humour with. Barring that, it's just a matter of keeping looking until you find a good fit.
what if i dont have friends?
To the above, I'd add search broadly; there are plenty of places to find games/players, online and offline. Here's a bunch of options: https://tinyurl.com/TTRPG-LFG
Also, if you get to speak with them, try to suss out what's important to you as a player, what isn't, and if you're a good fit.
you make soem good points
Hi, I'm really new to D&D, can I make a character that's a monkey? Sorry if this is a dumb question
There is the Hadozee race that came out in spelljammer!
some could argue if you squint hard enough humans might fit that bill /jk
New to dnd here, btw is it ok to make my dnd characters early on before searching for a dnd game because it's gonna took me a while a lot to think of my dnd character backstory n stuff, and any tips on what dnd classes are generally beginner friendly to new dnd players as a whole? could say for dnd character race I am choosing human or half elf because it's probably mostly the easiest to why and how they wanted to go on adventures and looking for a group party and how and what motivates them to go on adventures/character motivations n stuff i guess.idk I had been looking up google n stuff on the internet so I had maybe a bit of knowledge but not a lot in dnd stuff, and I wonder how long and how many dnd sessions are there and how many hours does one dnd session last? Idk I haven't played a dnd game yet
I like to say that any character you make outside of a game/group is practice with the process. Some things may need to change depending on the table/setting/etc., so don't get too attached to one idea.
I’d recommend coming up with a few loose character ideas. Then when you find a game, you can work with your DM to find the best fit and add the finishing touches.
(I personally like tying my character into the themes of the campaign, which is hard to do before I know what the campaign is about.)
D&D can be a single session or it can be weekly (or biweekly or monthly) sessions over a period of weeks, months, even years. There's no strict limit, but I think two hours is the minimum needed to make any real progress. I think somewhere between 3-4 hours is common, though some folks go for even longer than that.
Sorry to ask something so basic but- I'm new to DND and I have a really hard time roleplaying without feeling kind of silly. Do you guys have anything that could help?
You can just describe what your character says and does. "Kota asks the barkeep for information about X" instead of using dialogue.
Honestly i have extreme social anxiety. Whenever i play the character i usually just make myself the character. Im playing someone thats shy i am now accacia the shy girl. I am a brazen pirate that cant remember names i slur my words and act funny. It helped me anyway
Both of these sound helpful for sure. I'd still like to rp a bit cause people look like they have so much fun when they do, so I'll try something similar to Ella :> thanks
Yeah and Ive actually been working with some new people so if youd like you can always dm me for any extra advice help or just questions or practice
That's sweet, thank you
Im going to steal that idea.
One thing I think helps newer roleplayers is doing what you're comfortable with. If you're naturally curious (or whatever), use that for your character. Don't try to be someone you're not until (and if) you warm up to the act of roleplaying.
You may eventually get bored of being just yourself, so by then maybe you'll feel comfortable trying to be someone very different.
My first character i based the personality on myself so yeah that actually does work well too
It's called descriptive roleplay, which is a bit different from active. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#DescriptiveApproachtoRoleplaying
I'll do that! I doubt I can rp well enough to be someone completely different since I'm a beginner anyway
Some folks think you need to be some fantastical character. Untrue. If it's just you in a fantasy universe, that should be fine. If you have an understanding table, they'll do their best to accommodate you.
Mhm just start with what youre comfortable with and branch out as you get better with it
Will do, thank you guys ^^
Good luck!
Helloo my lovelies, ive gotta know can i actually use a lasso in combat??
as in like..
Use a lasso like red dead 2/basically every cowboy media ever, toss a rope and pull em close
There isn't a RAW lasso weapon, so if you are just going off what's in the rulebooks, you would probably have to settle for either a Whip or a Net.
But the beauty of DnD is that the rulebooks are not the end of the story! Discuss with your DM, talk through what you would want it to be able to do. It could just be a Net for the rules, but you are calling it a Lasso - that's just "reflavouring" and it's rare that a Dm would object to that.
I'll totally have to talk to a DM. I appreciate that!! I have this whole cowgirl bounty hunter character and just cannot wait to get them out there
Well, if you are worried about convincing them, start with something like "I want to have a lasso, I'm thinking at least of reflavouring a net, but it would be cool if I could also use it to pull people over, what do you think?"
@coarse mulch Having trouble with links? It's an anti-bot feature. Are you trying to share your character sheet?
Ooh yes good idea! I'll have to find a nice, noobie friendly dm. A lot of my ideas are a little bit... "high level" player type of thing but with enough help from yall and the dm it'll go great. Thank you Jale!!
Yes , i saw an interesting homebrew and i thought it would fit my dark assain druid better (its very similar to circle of moon just a bit diff) and i was wondering if it was balanced. For context me and my dm are both pretty new
If you are both new, I suggest sticking with the official material as you get on your feet with the game
Well, you can wait for 30 minutes and then they will let you post links, or you can tell me how to find it, say on reddit? But dunl is right, sticking with official material will be much much better for your early games.
If you want a dark Druid, have you considered Circle of Spores?
Ill look more into it thanks
A standard Circle of the Moon Druid can be flavored like a horror monster pretty easily tbh.
Y'know, whole creature of the night, stalking prey, etc. I don't see why you couldn't be a Moon Druid that assassinates people.
I definitely agree with sticking with official stuff for now, and Moon Druid's probably the most worry-free Druid subclass, 'cause your stats don't matter that much, and you don't have to worry about spells as much.
someone told me there is a cat character. is this a playable character or just like a monster in the game?
It's the Tabaxi, available in https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/mordenkainen-presents-monsters-of-the-multiverse
The player does need to know the stats of the wildshape
Yeah, sorry, I more of meant less worry about what stats to invest in.
We recommending Druid to first timers today?
No, the person wanted to
Okay
Hey, I would totally recommend Moon Druid to new players tbh. I think it's the closest thing we have to NAD in the game. It's really hard to royally screw up compared to most things in the game.
Hard disagree:
-
tracking wildshape options AND all spellcasting options forba new player is not easy, certainly not for a new playse
-
moon druid is absolutey broken at low levels
Either you’re ignoring most of the class features or you’re walking thru encounters
I do not think any first time player should start with any spellcasting class
Huh. That’s not been my experience with moon Druids at all.
Its not a new revelation
Regardless of how you're searching, it does take patience. Where are you looking?
A moon druids wildshapes vastly outclass…anything in tier 1
They’re more difficult just by the fact that they have more rules to learn, but that’s not going to cause me to gatekeep an entire class from a new player just because they’ve got some extra reading to do.
Its just reality. Learning spellcast and a class feature that is massively open ended while ALSO learning action economy, movement rules, role playing, etc
Doable? Sure. Recommended? I would not
I dont understand how ita gatekeeeping. The reality is a fighter is a softer landing
Do you not see how many posts here are “why is this so hard, theres so many rules”
It’s the opposite of gatekeeping, its providing an easier path to get playing
Action economy ain’t that important for a new player and I’ve found works fairly organically.
What’s more bizarre to me would be to have a table of martials because no one is “experienced enough “ to play a caster. Someone is going to take that option. Easy enough to set some expectations and slow the game down so everyone stays on the same page.
I was one of the people who started with a caster, I would not recommend it
Would u throw a new driver into a manual transmission and tel them to parallel park downhill in reverse?
I was overwhelmed with options for quite a while
You start in an empty parking lot for a reason
lol ok. Nvm then if there’s a parallel between manual and automatic for martial v spellcaster.
Yeah, I just assign a lot more value to the ability to course correct. There are some classes you can just royally mess up to the point where it's not fun to play. Moon Druid? You can make some mistakes and it'll still be fine.
It’s not just whether you can mess up badly, it’s that there’s gonna be a lot of options of stuff to do that might overwhelm new players
I let the players decide that. Not me.
It wont be though. The fighter inherently has fewer decisions which makes them less overwhelmed. the caster has more options which takes longer to process
When u want a kid to learn how to swim do you chuck them into the ocean?
If we are gonna be realistic, 5e is designed in a way that all the classes are fairly approachable by newer players and I stand by saying the best class for new players are the ones they want to play.
I prefer not to drown people
I’m not debating that. More rules means it’s inherently more difficult, but a few extra pages of rules isn’t enough for me to tell someone “you’re not ready for that.”
Can we stop with the false equivalents?
Nope! But the hyperbole is doing you no favors in building up your point.
I realize this conversation is related to onboarding new players, but maybe it'd be more fitting to be had in #dnd-discussion?
I'd rather throw a kid in the ocean with a life vest than in a pool without one.
Some people arent. Its reality. If someone wants to put in the work, sure. But thats not gonna be the baseline
That's on them to decide and not on you to throw a blanket statement on
I already said there are exceptions
Ohhh. I don’t have the ability in making such a judgement on a person. I suppose if you’re able to judge someone’s aptitude so quickly it must go easier for you then. Fair enough!
But if a person comes here like they often do and asks whats the best class for a beginner, i will never say anything but fighter
I’ve got new players coming to my table with a “I wanna do X!” idea. I let them know what may match, where to find the rules in the book, and an assurance that while I may not have the rules memorized I can certainly direct them where they’d need to go, and also how to manage their time at the table between turns.
At the same time, as the DM I let them know I’ll make the judgements if they don’t know a rule off the top of their head and go forward from there.
trying to make a dnd character,is it ok for me to go multiclass or not because I put my dnd character to a multiclass rogue/ranger idk or do you had to level up first then multiclass
Again, if we are gonna be realistic (like you keep claiming thay you are), 5e is designed in a way that all the classes are fairly approachable by newer players and I stand by saying the best class for new players are the ones they want to play.
I would double check with your dm, some don't allow multiclassing at all
I’m not going to tell someone no don’t play that, but I will say that a certain class may be more difficult to learn
Have you read the multiclassing rules?
Setting those expectations do be pretty key.
You can multiclass at level 2. There are extra rules associated with it and it's an optional rule, so while it may not be recommended for beginners, you can definitely make it happen (provided it's allowed at the table).
Oh I haven't joined a dnd game yet oof idk
I have seen a young person join AL as a druid. She had trouble processing information and even the addition of modifiers was hard for her. She played a Stars Druid and was completely overwhelmed. Every game she was flustered on her turn. Eventually she quit AL
So no i dont think its “gatekeeping” to recommend a noncaster class
You can read up on the rules and make a character using multiclass rules as a concept, but recognize you may not get to use it as is in a game, depending on what rules are in play.
ok
Also it’s like double or more things to keep track of
We arent going to agree. You do you
You should recommend a class that the person is interested in, and help them understand the mechanics. It's definitely gatekeeping to tell people they can't be casters, just because it's their first character.
Not can’t. Shouldnt.
not everyone has processes information that same way and i dont have time to do a full lesson pregame for any new casters.
Again: if someone WANTS to be a caster, this is a game, do whatever you want.
If someone asks me which is best to start, i will say fighter
Alright, folks. I think we’ve drifted away from the point here.
Is rogue beginner friendly?
I'd say it is, yes
Rogue doesn't have very mechanics to manage, so there's that.
It’s certainly less complex than druid.
Its pretty good to start and it’ll help you learn positioning and movement. Plus you have uses for your bonus action so u’ll get used to using it
I wonder about timezones though I mean the earth is a globe and countries and continents each had different timezones and I was living in SEA(south east asia) so timezone in my country is UTC+7 and in the internet I primarily talk English tbh so idk
I've played with people all over the globe. So long as the timing works for everyone and you have a means of communication, you should be good.

I have to read a book 💀
www.dndbeyond.com is the main site for D&D these days.
There's dnd.wizards.com and dndbeyond.com
DND is kinda a nerd game- lots of reading and math involved lol
ill still try
Trying is good, very good
Well, D&D is a game about rules and if you want to learn the rules then you'll have to read.
this is true
Read at your own pace. There's also Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" tutorial series on Youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
💀 it was easier to learn magic
nahhh we chilling
lmao
D&D 5e is kinda middle of the road. It's still one of the easiest d&d editions to get into, but there are ttrpgs out there that are harder and some that are easier to learn. However there are countless resources (including people here) that are willing to help you get your feet under you with this
My biggest piece of advice is be patient. Whether it's learning rules or finding games. Patience is key
yo on the register for dnd wizards it says to redeem sum
When you respond, you can turn off Pings by following the instructions up here
sorry
And I have nothing to do with the site. I wouldn't be able to tell you what that's about
