Did you reply to any of the posts in #looking-for-players?
There's a long list of DM's offering their games. Pick one which fits all the criteria you may have
and how do i get in touch with them
Just either DM them personally, or write in their message "Interested"
ok can you hook me up
How can I hook you up?
by helping me find someone
There's a large list of DM's offering their games.
As I mentioned, go through threads made by various DM's, and see if the timezone, playing method and settings are good for you
ok
I can't just easily hook you up with a DM. You're looking for a DM, there's a large collection of DM's there, willing to run a game.
ok thank you for your help
I wish you luck in finding a DM. Hope I helped enough
Good dnd bots?

Hey y'all! I don't know much about D&D, however my brother and I would like to dip our toes into the game. From the little bit of research I did, there's a bunch of vids with sessions from Dimension 20, Critical Role etc. Before I even get started on playing I think it'd be a good idea to watch people play first. Anyone have any favorite sessions/vids/channels to get started? Or maybe even a new group that wouldn't mind an 'observer' like myself? Thanks!

Thanks! Much appreciated!
I would actually recommend limiting how much dimension 20 and critical role you base your expectations on. They are professional actors, many with backgrounds in improv, and there's a whole team working to produce those shows...it's fun to watch! But it wont help so much to get you started in playing, because it's way beyond what home games can achieve.
There's an official let's play of the original 5e starter adventure, including some totally new players... Not as glamorous!! But more realistic https://youtu.be/hgNRe76o4_8
Theres also plenty in between. Arcane Arcade and Dungeon Dudes are high end but not crazy end.
When spellcasting, what does charisma and perception determine? And how would rolling for said spell work?
Perception isn't relevant to spellcasting. Charisma may be depending on the class your character is.
Are you imagining a particular scenario?
I am a tiefling red dragon sorcerer.
Say I want to cast magic missile on an enemy 20 ft away. What would a DM instruct me to do?
Magic Missle doesn't involve an attack roll or a saving throw, so you would decide to do it and you'd roll the appropriate damage listed in the spell text.
to roll damage for the number of missiles fired based on what level you cast it at; as, magic missile is an automatic hit unless otherwise blocked by some feature or spell
if speaking for a spell you need to roll to hit with, like firebolt as an example, you would:
Roll 1d20 and then add your spell modifier (Charisma as a sorceror) + Proficiency Bonus to the number you rolled to determine if the spell hits the target. If it does, roll for damage as normal
Very helpful thank you 🙏
One more thing. I am yet to find any actual explanations as to what sorcery points do. Can anyone explain it to me?
A sorcerer gains a feature called Metamagic at level 3 (https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/sorcerer). They use sorcery points to fuel that feature which can do cool things like enable you to cast a spell as a bonus action, extend a spells duration, or extend a spells distance, or even cast the spell without verbal components (which could prevent it from being counterspelled!).
Or even regain spell slots by using those sorcery points.
If using the Metamagic feature, you would simply state which option you are using when you cast a spell and mark down the spent sorcery points necessary to fuel the Metamagic option utilized
Ok that’s sick thank you.
Everything you were told about magic missile is correct, but there's one further thing to bear in mind...magic missile is unique in being automatic like that!
Most of your spells will do one of two things:
Either you do a spell attack roll where you roll d20+CHR+Proficiency and if it beats the enemy AC, you hit.
Or for other spells
The enemy does a saving throw roll, and tries to beat your spellcasting DC, which is usually 8+CHR+Proficiency
The class description for Sorcerers in the Basic Rules and PHB goes over what you can do with Sorcery Points, both the Metamagic options and the rules for converting SP to spell slots and vice versa.
Hello, well as a new player to dnd,I wanted to know what a monk attack is (to be more specific,I wasn't sure how much damage I can do with a monk's deflect missile skill)
I'm not sure what you mean by "Monk Attack", exactly. Did you mean to ask "What is a Monk Weapon?"
A deflected missile deals the damage of your Monk Weapons, which is equal to your Martial Arts die.
Can you log into dnd beyond with discord?
Yes,as you said I meant a monk 'weapon',sorry. And what is usually the martial arts die? A level 1 monk here
I need help
No. DnDBeyond only allows logins via Google, Apple, and Twitch.
Shit
I may have lost my account then
I linked my twitch and it confirmed
And after a series of unfortuanate events I can't sign in

Also in the future, please use #ddb-support for support questions with DnDBeyond.
Depending on your phone (Android = Google account, iPhone = Apple account) you can then figure out how to login.
A level 1 monk's Martial Arts die is 1d4, and will still be 1d4 when you first get Deflect Missiles at level 3. You can check out what your martial arts die is by looking at a monks's level table in the PHB any time. It goes all the way up to 1d10 by level 20!
Alright, It's all cleared up. Thx for the help
Hi there, I'm new and have never played DND before, but I've wanted to for several years now. I've been reading all the rules and watching guides and tips and stuff, but I'm still absolutely terrified to actually play. I wanted to introduce myself and keep reading up on the rules before I actually try and find a group, so thats all this is. Sorry if Ive wated your time, I just really dont know where to start
Once you have a general feel for the rules, the next step is to find a group to play with.
Check out #find-a-game to see the different ways you can find a group/game to join.
Thank you so much! Something like this was something I was looking for! I think my brother def wants to learn more about DMing so he got interested in Lost Mine of Phandelver.
Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to DnD, I've only played a few times years ago with some friends. I recently started listening to some DnD podcasts and it got me excited to get back into it. I don't have anyone to play with though, and there aren't many places that host games around me. This seems like a great way to basically start over. What would be the best way to get into a group and start playing?

@fallen surge Thank you!
Where is a good place to create a new character for someone inexperienced? DnD Beyond is missing many races.
You have to own the books on DnDBeyond to use anything not in the SRD
This is true regardless of websiute/app you are using - not-SRD material must be pruchased/licensed.
Anyone familiar with the Taguel race from Fire Emblem? I have an OC of one who doesn't have her full human form anymore, stuck in an anthro form, who I'm thinking I could rework into a Haregon. Would that be too far fetched?
Reflavoring an existing race is fine and encouraged
Awesome!
If a creature is deafened and has blindsight, does blindsight just stop working
Nope - defenead just means:
A deafened creature can't hear and automatically fails any ability check that requires hearing.
Blindsight is not impacted.
I just found and read the giant bat statblock
and I learnt that this is true unless it says it's not somewhere in a creatures stats. I guess
Thanks
Hello everyone. Im completely new to DnD and I've been meaning to try it out for some time now. I want to get into this fascinating game but I have zero clue where to start. I was hoping I could be pointed into the right direction and get going with actual DnD experience. I plan on including other friends but for now I want to learn what it takes to play this game. Im intimidated by a lot of things and I'm not sure where to go or what to do. I was hoping someone could lead me into the right direction with these things so that my introduction isn't so confusing.

I'm not 100% brand new to 5e but I don't know much. I'm wondering what class is generally considered to be the most complex? As this is definitely subjective and not necessarily an easy/simple answer, which 2 or 3 classes/subclasses are the most complex or hard to learn?
My top three hardest classes to learn (for me personally) would go (in no particular order)
-
druid. Wildshape is a hell of a concept to tackle with its own list of rules to remember, along with learning spellcasting.
-
paladin. A lot of features that work on their own resource pool means a lot of management for the player to handle. Also, getting down how you wanna roleplay your paladin doesn't always click easily with new players.
-
warlock. This one is can range from easy-breezy to frustrating depending on how well you have a grasp of how spellcasting works in dnd, because warlocks have a form of casting spells that no other class in dnd does.
I’d say wizard, warlock, and artificer, as they all have lots of options to choose from (wizard with spells, artificer with the infusions, and warlock with eldritch invocations) and thus lots of interactions to deal with, whether you try to memorize them all or not. Druid would probably be my honorable mention.
Hmm alright then I'm probably gonna play a Wizard or Artificer. My group has decided to play 5e instead of PF1E like normal so I'm most interested in whatever has the most complexity. My brain needs something to chew on and classes like Fighter and Barbarian just don't do it for me.
in dnd can I be a hands free champion in 2e or is this the wrong place to ask for 2e
Artificer is a good choice for what you're looking for by the sounds of it. My current experience with a level 10 artificer has me falling in love with the class. Having two resources that you can prepare per day (spells + infusions) allows for a lot of customization to tackle a wide range of problems
In general I find that builds that use spellcasting to augment their martial abilities allow for the most complexity. Combining concentration effects with martial attacks such as that done by the moon druid, hexblade and battlesmith really does it for me personally
(is there even a 2e discord)
You could ask in #dnd-elder-editions
ok thanks
ok so
if I want to be an Eldritch Knight and be a small-scale imitation of Sauron is that possible? Like very minute-scale.
and also be a fist fighter
in standard 5e
I mean based on just like reading the class I don't see why not? I don't know much tho
How to get adopted into a group to play with im not sure how to find the right fit
Yea I know it’s just, im a bit older and I’d prefer to play with adults for starters and also I don’t know what a lot of the choices are or mean it’s a bit overwhelming
Have you got the option of trying with some existing friends of yours?
Most of the people in find a game will be adults
Also you should probably learn the basic rules first

Also, depending where you live, many cities have gaming cafes that will have some sort of D&D presence. Heck, there's two in my small town, but we are kinda a nerd enclave!
If you’re in the UK there are numerous Geekretreats popping up that run DnD most nights
I’m too introverted I’m afraid, but it sounds so nice, I keep to myself a lot so,
I don’t really have a group that plays this or they have their own people im not the type to insert myself so I’m trying here but it’s still scary
I used the char creator , I also did that intro game, I have played some tabletop but only briefly … (at events when I was a kid)
The nice thing about d&d is that there's even an option to play just as one player and one DM if that suits you. For you, this might help separate the "new game" anxiety from any other anxieties, and ease you in
Yea I wrote I’ll take any game, one to one sounds okay too
You can even solo play, but that's obviously quite different! But it can really help with getting on top of the rules. When I was learning to DM, I solo played all of the encounters first, just so I could anticipate what might happen
How would you solo play?
Here's a video from a YouTube creator explaining it https://youtu.be/c2nVilB8QeY
And here's a liveplay of someone doing the adventure that I used https://youtu.be/dvxTU4F2L04
Thankyou that’s really helpful
Unfortunately not
The second one is almost doing it like a "show" for us the audience. For me, I was more focussed on the combat not the roleplay, so I was just thinking "what would be a good move for the barbarian to make from here" etc
Other places to look are libraries and geek shops, being a bit of a shut in myself it can be quite daunting to go in some of these places to get a game but once you find the right group for you it’s great fun
Yea I wish I could
Best of luck to you finding an online group, spread your net wide and you’ll find something 👍
I will and I am, thankyou for your suggestions I hope I can cure my shut in one day but for now it’s online for me xD
Yeah been having trouble finding a online group to
It feels like all the player and group spots get snatched up pretty quick
Don’t forget this isn’t the only place to look for online games, roll20, Reddit, other discords, https://startplaying.games/ but these are paid games I believe, Facebook dnd groups
Indeed

Hello, if im a paladin and have two handed weapon heavy fighting talent (that allow to do another attack action x turn everytime a crit or heavy strike death occur) i can basically have 6 hits with speed spell casted?
1 normal attack
2 extra attack
3 normal attack from speed
4 extra attack
5 bonus attack from heavy two handed weapon fighthing death\crit
6 extra attack
is all correct?
Heavy fighting talent sounds like homebrew, or is this a translation?
No - at most a paladin gets three attacks if they have the effects of the haste spell, and potentially 1 bonus action attack (must fit the requirements of using light melee weapon in your attacks)
I think they are talking about the Two-Weapon Fighting bonus action feature.
Two-Weapon Fighting
When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you're holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you're holding in the other hand. You don't add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative.
1 normal attack
1 extra attack
1 haste-provided attack
1 bonus attack from two-weapon fighting
Assuming you are over level 5
The feat and fighting style make that bonus attack better, but don't give you more attacks. You only get one bonus attack, and the haste spell has the explicit statement that it only provides one weapon attack, so wouldn't trigger extra attack a second time.
yea but under extra attack if you read it, it say strickly that everyime the action of a weapon attack occur you get an extra attack.. u 100% sure?
As a Paladin, two weapon fighting probably is not optimal for you. It takes a feat and a style to get the most out of it. Paladins are more "few big hits" focussed
And under Haste, if you read it, it says this won't apply.
As a suggestion, Paladins are best with Great Weapon Fighting
You only get one bonus action per turn (unless something alters that but pretty sure very little alters that)
You've learned to put the weight of a weapon to your advantage, letting its momentum empower your strikes. You gain the following benefits:
- On your turn, when you score a critical hit with a melee weapon or reduce a creature to 0 hit points with one, you can make one melee weapon attack as a bonus action.
- Before you make a melee attack with a heavy weapon that you are proficient with, you can choose to take a -5 penalty to the attack roll. If the attack hits, you add +10 to the attack's damage.
^Great Weapon Master
I see why this is confusing, because it's one of those areas where a specific rule is overriding a clearly stated general rule.
General rule: if you take the attack action, you get to do two weapon attacks.
Haste lets you take an additional attack action, and therefore would trigger that, except....
Specific rule: when using the attack action from haste, you only get one weapon attack.
^in addition to any subclass features you might have access to
@jale ok lets say you are right on haste, and about the bonus attack from Great Weapon Master? you get the extra attack there? so
2+2+1 attacks x turns ipotetically?
You have in your turn
1 Action
1 Bonus Action
1 Reaction
1 Special Action
And other actions.
If you are usin GWM and score a crit or kill, then you get the right to use your one bonus action that turn for an additional attack.
If you get a crit or kill twice or three times, from your normal, extra, or hasted attack...you still have the right to use your one bonus action for an additional attack
As Damien says, you get one bonus action. GWM Unlocks the right to use that for an additional attack. It doesn't grant more bonus actions 😞
In addition, you only have 1 action per turn, except attacks. Maximum attacks per action = 4 attacks.
Sad face for lack of many bonus actions
I have homebrewed a spell for it.
But I agree, having a lack of bonus actions sucks.
yea under haste is clearly stated (one weapon attack only so it means not extra attack nor two attacks ecc)
so extra attack apply only 1 time x turn only in my normal attack action, no in the haste attack and not in the bonus action. did i got it right?
how you categorize extra attack @dire slate is the "special action"? sure isnt a bonus action
Choose a willing creature that you can see within range. Until the spell ends, the target's speed is doubled, it gains a +2 bonus to AC, it has advantage on Dexterity saving throws, and it gains an additional action on each of its turns. That action can be used only to take the Attack (one weapon attack only), Dash, Disengage, Hide, or Use an Object action
Okay
With Haste, you get your +2 AC, advantage on dex saves and additional action.
You get an additional one action, which you can use for:
One more attack, to dash, disengage, hide or use an object action
Extra Attack is just a part of your Attack Action. You take the attack action, you get to swing your sword (or any combination of equipped weapons you choose) twice.
Hi
So, if you already used your action to attack, haste allows you to attack once more
You’re deep into #dnd-rules territory now
Yeah. We should move this to Rules tbh
Yeah this should go to #dnd-rules at this point
Hey guys, yesterday i just did my first DnD character on DnD Beyond. I don’t really know the rules off the DnD and i only know how a few of the systems works. My own character is an Wizard and I had an question to an specific spell. If I use the spell „Burning Hand“, do I burn myself too when I cast it? When I look at the range of this spell, it says „Self/15 ft.“
No, you don't burn yourself. It means that the cone of fire emerges from you. The apex of the cone will be you. It's what can be thought of as a template-based spell, because it relies on some shape on the battlefield. Other template-based spells might not require the template to originate on yourself.
Two spells to compare that might make this clearer are Lighning Bolt and Catapult. Lighning bolt has a bolt of lightning emerge in a line from your position. So it says Self(100ft) - A 100ft line that starts on yourself.
Catapult has you pick up an object within range and hurl it in a line. The range is 60ft - because that object can be anywhere within 60ft of you. So it just says 60ft, and the line drawn can be from whatever object you choose.
Ok, thanks

If something says "eat" in its requirement, say like a mushroom or something, but instead it gets injected, would the effect still happen?
There's the term "RAW" which means " Rule as Written". RAW, if it says eat, it means eat. But the DM can override anything they like. If they wanted to inflict that effect without forcing someone to eat, and so injected it, then they could decide that the effect is the same.
Usually, it's advisable to only change it to something that is equivalent to eating. For example, a health potion should be drunk. You could argue, it's the same to drink it as inject it. But then you might have someone who tries to go into battle with health potions fed into their body by drips, like Bane...and then you have broken the game a little!
This is why you hear the phrase "Flavour is Free". Sure, it's fine to say you inject not drink. But it's not fine to change away from the rational limitations implied by "drink".
Evening folks
Hello
Hey
Hi im neww
Hello both
Hello
What are good weapons for a character high in dexterity?
I am the same
Hello all 👋 just joined. Played many years ago, looking to play again, virtually or locally.
Anything with the finesse property, and any ranged weapon. Monks also have the ability to use most weapons with DEX instead of STR
Dagger and rapier use finesse?
Got any tips on how to make good backstories?
Yes
Correct
And remember, flavour is free. If your character concept requires something "cooler", but you are happy with it functioning exactly like a rapier does, then just talk to your DM about it. One of my players is a DEX ranger who wields a very aragorn-like sword. It's just a reflavoured rapier. As long as he respects all the rapier rules, it makes no difference what we call it.
Give the DM something to work with: places you'll know, characters you have history with (good or bad), a reason for some longer-term goal.
Thanks you 😄
Let me give you an example from my current campaign. Both players were totally new.
Not helpful backstory: My character is from somewhere remote. They don't know anyone here. They have some trauma in their past. No, I won't decide what that trauma was.
Helpful backstory: My character is from somewhere remote, so I don't know anyone around here or any real info about this region. They were raised by a kindly Bronze dragon after their family was slain by orcs. The dragon has been cursed (or diseased or something) and can't use all its draconic powers, like its breath. To complete my apprenticeship to the dragon, I must find an old tome of dragon lore that includes a spell that will cure them.
You see how the two are quite similar in a lot of ways, but the second one gives the DM so much more to latch on to. All I have to do is put some clue down that the tome is in X location and it gives that character a motivation to go there.
No problem!
It’s my first playing dnd any tips for being a paladin?
Talk out-of-game with your party about the personality you're considering and how that would work with (or clash) with the group. Sort out how everyone can participate without someone ruining the fun at the table.
Hey Im trying to assign points to my 6 abilities (strength, dexterity, etc). How many points do I have to give out?
(If your DM is using the point buy system, of course!)
Hello there (●’◡’●)ノ
General kenobi... wait wrong universe
Hi I am looking for a dm I am a newish player I have played magic the gathering and I want to join a campaign and just have fun I have a thing in #750812887697588356
Check out #looking-for-players as well.
As a new player,I want to try and become a DM. Now I need some tips for that. Fellow DMs,do you have any suggestions?
First head on over to #dm-discussion where you can ask questions and advice.
what's Dexterity?
A Dexterity check can model any attempt to move nimbly, quickly, or quietly, or to keep from falling on tricky footing.
All the stealing, sneaking, and just plain maneuverability checks are Dexterity
Dexterity:
noun Skill and grace in physical movement, especially in the use of the hands; adroitness.
Arcana. Your Intelligence (Arcana) check measures your ability to recall lore about spells, magic items, eldritch symbols, magical traditions, the planes of existence, and the inhabitants of those planes.

I've seen a build recently about the monk class using a longsword as a monk weapon, but I am unsure if monks can use longswords, since it isn't a simple melee weapon. Does this render the monk unable to use the longsword?
two ways to do so:
Be a Kensei Monk
use an optional feature from tashas, which lets monks use longsword if they are proficient
Think it’s called dedicated weapon
yep
Let's say as a monk, I use the versatile property (two handed) on the longsword to make a regular attack; can I also make the unarmed strike as a bonus action by "dropping" the longsword with only one hand while still holding it in the other hand and then making the unarmed strike?
Unarmed strikes can be hands feet knees head butt etc
you dont need to drop the sword
just make unarmed strikes with feet or whatever you want
you also dont need to hold the sword in two hands to attack with both hands
Any weapon that requires two hands only does so at the moment you attack, as well.
Hi everyone. I am new to DnD and i have a question about something i saw on a live game of dnd (probably e5 but i dont know for sure). There was a character that made a ritual after he saw some of his firends die. He said some magical words and put a hole in his chest then took out his hearth and froze it and gave it to his crow. i was wondering if it was a formal dnd thing or a custom plot of some
Why did he do that?
That's a custom plot of some kind, first of all
First thought is that it's maybe a heavily flavored Gentle Repose.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/gentle-repose
Riiiight, no idea what the outcome of all that ritual was. But seems highly dramaticised
What was the live play called?

OK, quick question, kind of in a rush:
A DM friend has created a local adventure league near me, but has had an arguement with the other DM, and i wanna step up, where cna i get campaigns and/or oneshots for me, absolute newbie player and to-be-DM ??
#adventurers-league might be your best bet
gud, ty
As a rogue, the recommended plan of attack to best utilize the sneak attack feature is to use the "hide action" after every round. However, how is this possible to hide if you have to disengage first which uses your bonus action, thereby not allowing you to use your hide action?
This is my first time building a character and this is so confusing to start
I think I got it, but i was not ready
Which part of character creation?
You don’t always have to hide you get sneak attack I’ve you have advantage on the attack or if a team mate is in melee range of your target. There is also an optional rule for bonus action steady aim to give you advantage
all of it lmao, this is my first ever time trying D and D. I got it done, but im sure it could've been better
You can share a link to your sheet if you did it on dndbeyond

Use standard array or point buy when starting out
If your making a warlock you want charisma as your highest stat
I just read through the basic rules for some magical classes and there was a major question in my mind:
How should cleric/druid/sorcerer prepare their spells? How does it work? when should they do it and most importantly why should they do it?
Cleric and Druids can prepare spells during their long rest since they have full access to their spell list.
Sorcerers can change one spell every level up, but otherwise are stuck with it.
As for the why of it, that is dependent on what you are going up against, have faced, or may face. If a spell hasn't been of use to you, you may want to swap it out for another available to you; or, if you know x is coming up, you may wish to adjust your spells to suit the potential situation
But how does it happen? Do you just say "I will change my spells" and that's it?
You just change them on a long rest,
Some DMs may ask you how your character prepares their spells, but that's not RAW. Just the fact they can do so is enough for it to happen in game.
So what about Bards and warlocks? I read through Bard and I think it worked like the sorcerer, correct?
Oh alright, understood👍
Bards, sorcerers, warlocks, and rangers know a limited number of spells; that's all they can cast. Artificers, paladins, clerics, and druids can access their class's full spell list (provided they have the proper spell slots), prepping a few from that list. Wizard is an outlier: they can have spells in their spellbook and prep a certain number from those.
ok so im new, used to play years ago and i'm looking to get back into it but im trying to find a group

I wrote a guide if you want to look beyond this server as well: https://tinyurl.com/TTRPG-LFG
So let's get this straight:
1.Bards,warlocks,sorcerers,rangers can only change their spell list after they level up to a new level
2.Clerics,paladins,druids, artificers have full access, but have to prepare it with a long rest
3.Wizards are different,as they have to learn spells and add it to their spell book. And they can change their prepared spells with a long rest
Correct me if I'm wrong in anything
Correct, aye
Bards, warlocks, sorcerers, and rangers can't change their spells known RAW; at most, they may learn a new spell on level up and can swap one spell for another (this is an optional rule).
Otherwise, you've got the gist of it!
is it mandatory to put a backstory for a character?
It's up to the table and DM, so no, but it's pretty common to have something to describe who your character was before the current adventure.
a backstory? Not necessarily. Some DM's may wish for it to be able to organically fit your character into the world/know their motives.
Yeah that's what I meant. They learn new spells on level up and can change an older spell for them(which is optional)
i utterly failed at the demo
as a normal person would, i'm never gonna even try the game or look at it again
i hate failure /j
The difference is that you're not going to be playing alone. D&D is a collaborative game played with a group.
do people tend to be kinder when regarding failure
Depends on the person.
Remember this is a game where there is not clear win/lose outcome (well, other than a TPK (Total Party Kill)).
Typically yeah! But it’ll vary group by group and depend on the circumstances.
One thing I’d say to keep in mind that failure doesn’t immediately mean a bad time. Failure is often even necessary to get those “wow!” moments that you’ll remember for a really long time!
To be honest, if there is no risk of failure then why play anything? Always winning isn't fun, there's no challenge.
sometimes, failing is actually enjoyable and leads to the best comedic moments for a party
Hello
The game is based around the randomness of the dice. You aren't going hit the monster 100% of the time and sometimes you fail your saving throws. Risk of failure is built into the game. If you are risk averse to failure then probably don't play this game.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Lets say you have a polearm with reach as a barbarian, you are 15ft (or 3 tiles) away from your enemy. You move 5ft (1 tile) to your enemy, you attack, and then move back to your original position. On that enemies turn, if he moves within 10 ft (2 tiles) of you, do you get an opportunity attack?
Only if you have the Sentinal feat if I'm understanding you're meaning. They have to leave your threatened range to provoke an OA, but Sentinel lets you OA if they enter as well.
You're thinking of Polearm Mastery. Sentinel allows OA even if a target attempts to Disengage before leaving your reach
Aaah, my bad, one of my players has both I get them mixed up
No worries, understandable
(and so do all my group apparently because they call 'Sentinel!' when anyone steps too close. Gonna have to chat about that)
is discord always required for D&D
Depends on the individual DM's setup.
Nope. Classically it is played around a table, in person. Obviously virtual DND is popular now, and a lot of people use discord, but other platforms are available
Creating your own Discord server is free...
Can I simulate a scenario with someone to understand mechanics with one of my character sheets?
I could. dm's?
yes that works, since I can't post images on this channel
Ultimately, you just need some way to communicate with your group. Which you use is up to your group.
Hello
do I need to use my voice for communication always?
That depends on the DM.
Personally as a DM I prefer voice because I'm busy with reading stuff on four monitors while I DM so I don't want to read a text channel on what each player is chatting about. Voice is easier for multi-tasking as a DM.
When every one else is using voice I would say yes.
hnngh i genuinely hate using my voice

You could as someone you know who is already dming to join an existing campaign (though this may be harder) or you could go to the looking-for-dm channel that is in this very discord 🙂
I’m looking into 3 groups right now
Two already the same thing and the other one is a new group but we’re missing people

what is Noncore DND?
I will add a bit of caution to finding a game/group - finding the right group can take time and effort. It generally does not happen overnight (but it could!). Scheduling is usually the biggest issue, followed by mismatched expectations. So be patient and keep trying.
All hail UndyingNoob
Where are you seeing this? It could mean using third-party rules and publications to enhance the group's D&D games. Or if you're talking about DnDBeyond, it relates to adventures and materials outside of the core books.
going back onto character builder
Hello!
Okay yeah, that refers to materials from like Critical Role and Acquisitions Incorperated which are non-core D&D settings.
ah
Hi 🙂
what is Eberron and Dragonlance
How're you?
Both are different D&D settings.
Eberron is kind of like... a film noire/steampunk-like setting
Good! Welcome to the D&D discord bro.
Thank you Glad to be here! Argh I can't get enough of DND
Dragonlance is more heroic fantasy but with cataclysmic wars that have happened or may yet happen soon.
I DM once a week and I'm looking for a discord game to have a PC on lol
These are very simplified explanations of those settings though but should give you an idea of what they're like.
I know it's not the same as a in person but I feel like it world be kind of cool to play on discord somebody recommended it and said that there's many one shot games on discord.

@haughty light
Ty king
Is there such a thing as a variant Dwarf? If so, is there any source material?
Not in 5e, no.
Variant is more of a mechanical thing- it isn't a 'subrace' or anything like that, it just changes how a subrace/race acts.
Variant human changes humans from +1 to all, to plus +1 to two skills and gets a bonus feat.
Varient tiefling has options to replace the stats/spells/traits with different ones but more mix and match.
In 5e dwarf options are Hill Dwarf, Mountain Dwarf, Deep Dwarf. Eberron rising from the last war has 'Mark of Warding' Dwarves.
Does this guide focus on 5e or do i need to read 5e in another web
The Basic Rules is for 5E.
Ok thanks
5th Edition (5E) is the current edition.
Yup!
If you want to approximate something like Variant Human, but for a dwarf, consider the Custom Lineage in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
what is contested by an intimidation check
Usually wisdom
There are no rules specifying what contests an intimidation check, the rules only give a few examples. As such, it'd be down to the DM to decide which is a good topic for #dm-discussion

Might be a dumb question but what can a person do with weapons aside from the average hit. Can someone like throw their weapon, use it to knock someone to the ground etc?
Not a silly question at all- there's a few things like 'shove' and 'grapple' you can do. You can also always try and get creative and see if your DM will allow something else to be done using the environment or so on.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#ActionsinCombat
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MeleeAttacks - this section covers shoving, grappling so on
Weapons with the Thrown property (like a dagger), can be thrown for full damage. Weapons without the Thrown property, only do 1d4, the same as throwing a rock or a chair (i.e. count as an improvised weapon)
Oh sweet, thanks!
Wow
Is there a full guide, or comprehensive page for Druid class what strngths and weaknesses, optimal weapons, and all those
We have #optimization if you want to dive into “optimization” builds but it’s very opinionated theorizing with math. Many folks would just say go with what’s fun for you and your group.
Is it possible to Miguel O'Hara chokeslam someone???
You can shove them to the floor
There's a shove action that you can refer to, letting you attempt to push someone prone.
There's also a subclass of fighter, battlemaster. One of the maneuvers you can choose allows you to knock someone prone and damage them at the same time. Might be worth a glance.
hey I was wondering if any one can help me. I'm trying to help someone who's never played make a wizard but I'm also pretty new and I don't know were to but the best stat and the worst stat.

Does rolling always go for d20s or does it sometimes go for damage hits and other dice?
Checks, saves, and attacks always use a d20. Damage, on the other hand, uses d4, d6, d8, and d12s instead.
On rare occasions, some effects and features might add something like 1d4 to your d20 roll, but you'll still be rolling that d20.
Hello everybody 🙂 I'm new here! Any suggestions?
If it's not a check, a save, or an attack, it'll always specify what you need to roll.

Is there some kind of drunk condition
Nope. Not officially.
In the past I’ve just kind of hand waved if, but if you need to start somewhere for actual mechanics, you can look at Poisoned.
The "Poisoned" condition is used for drunkeness in at least one published campaign. Not a hard-and-fast rule, but at least it demonstrates useage.
Poisoned gives disadvantage on ability checks and saves attack rolls I believe
There's certain poisons (the item) which deal damage, but Poisoned (the condition) only causes you to have disadvantage on some rolls
Took the words righ tout of my mouth 😄
poison is a type of damage
Poisoned is a condition
The two are often found together
Depends on the effect. Many things that deal poison damage just deal a single instance of damage.
The Poisoned condition often lasts a while.
Ic
I think poisoned is an overkill so just roll 4 dice and take the second lowest (very good idea)
I cant form a question lol. Here is my actual question:
Does rolling at an advantage always go for d20s or does it sometimes go for damage hits and other dice?
Advantage is only for d20 rolls. There are abilities that allow rerolling damage dice, but they don't fall under the advantage naming
Rolling 4 dice and keeping the second lowest is more punishing than Disadvantage (rolling 2 and keeping lowest)
Average for a standard roll is 10.5
Average for Disadvantage is 7.17
Average for your method is 5.51
Wait wtf ??
Aint no way
Show me the anydice chart or whatever you used
output {2}@2d20 named "Disadvantage"
output {2}@3d20 named "Roll 4 keep 2nd"
output {3}@3d20 named "Roll 4 keep 3rd"
You might want to try Roll 4 keep 2nd. It's somewhere between Disadvantage and a normal roll.
Oops i did roll 3 not roll 4
hang on let me fix that
Ah yeah that was my mistake 😄
💀
standard roll 10.50
Disadvantage 7.17
Roll 4 keep 2nd 12.50
Roll 4 keep 3rd 8.50
My apologies.
I think roll distribution is entirely outside the scope of a discussion for newcomers.
I think it does overcomplicate things though, for such an edge case. Disadvantage is simple and familiar to everyone, and the difference between 7.17, 8.5 and 10.5 is not....game-making.
Nah I was joking lol
Why don't you take this to a more appropriate channel like #dm-discussion?
I think the point has concluded.
Where does voice acting advice go?
There’s not a specific channel for that, so either #non-dnd-topics or #dnd-discussion, depending on the nature of the advice.
You often want to tailor your character to the DM's campaign and setting. For example a sailor character is probably not going to have a good time in a desert campaign
If you make a character before finding a game, don’t expect to play it as is since it may not fit the setting, vibe, or such. Have character concepts and tweak those once you find a group.
Going through the process of creating a character can be helpful regardless.
You can definitely make characters to learn and get familiar with the process before finding a DM, but be prepared to modify your concepts to fit
I'd recommend coming up with a few loose character concepts. Then when you join a game, you can work with the DM to find the best fit and finalize the details.
I usually try to tie my own characters into the theme of the campaign itself, though, so I prefer making mine once I have more information.
oh okay...
so uhhh
im like really new to this
what would be the best way of making a character?
As a new player, I would recommend figuring out the concept for your character. Do you want to wear heavy armour, fight with certain types of weapons, or rely mostly on magic
D&D Beyond can do a lot of the heavy lifting. If you click "Show Help Text" before you start, it will walk you through each step.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
If you don't have a DM yet, just skip the Home tab with all the settings, and start on the next page with Race.
And when you get to Ability Scores, I'd stick with Standard Array or Point Buy. If a DM wants you to roll, they'll have you do that later.
Ultimately, the character builder as a whole just follows the first few chapters of the Basic Rules in order:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules

Hello! Have you checked the channel above? Finding a game isn't always easy, as it requires a lot of things to fall into place just right. But hopefully you'll come across something that works soon!
Hello. I am new, I was wondering how most d&d games over Discord take place. I watched an Asmongold video with him and 2 friends playing on an online 2d tabletop with different environments and monsters which piqued my interest. If I took place in a campaign over Discord would we just talk over the mic and imagine everything or would we use an online tabletop? Asking this generally as in what do most people do.
If playing online, people would either use a Virtual Tabletop (VTT), such as Roll20, Foundry, or owlbear.rodeo, or use Theatre of the Mind (aka your imagination).
I DM online and I use the Foundry VTT.
Hey so I’m relatively new dnd, been playing since idk I’d say august but I have a really cool story line I wanna do but I don’t know how to dm, let along get started on being a dm, any tips?
I recommend asking in #dm-discussion
I just did right after I saw u mention it! Thank you
@fresh basalt The best way to learn how to DM is to watch other DMs such as the best ever Matt Mercer from Critical role
Or you can join a server and listen in on DMs
Note: people who recommend watching critical role or dimension 20 for tips on how to make your home game better are probably deliberately trolling. You shouldn't measure yourself against professional actors with teams of writers and other artistic professionals backing them up. They are fun to watch.
Matt Mercer did some DM tutorials a few years back and they are really good
Honestly though, it would be good inspiration. My advice to be a good DM is simple though: Be the DM you want to have.
I’ve heard podcast are good to and I have like three I listen to, so I know Matt Mercer is a big part as well is there any others I should look into for home brews or anything like that!
Keep in mind Matt Mercer is a professional actor, who's great at improv, and he's been playing for decades too. Be inspired but build your own DM style.
That’s really good to know!
WhackSteven from TableStory and Mark from High Rollers are very good DMs to watch
I totally believe in tutorials and analysis of what makes them good, that can be really helpful. But watching these shows uncritically (lol) is probably going to make it feel like an insurmountable challenge. If you need to learn to walk, don't try to learn by watching Olympic runners!
Ok perfect these are great starters!
Seems like an over reaction to someone recommending a very popular D&D podcast to someone Lol
Another way to learn how to DM would be one on one training with an experienced DM
If anyone has any other basic questions about how to get started in DnD Im here to answer as best as I can
I really appreciate that!

@autumn blaze The best way to learn how to play DnD is to join a server
More specifically, the best way to learn is to actually play a game. But there's plenty of ways you can prepare beforehand: give the basic rules a read, check out the Handbooker Helper videos linked above, or give the introductory demo a try. Many tables expect you to understand the general gist of the basic rules, but even experienced players will run into scenarios in-game that will require a few minutes of looking back at how things are handled.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Joining a table without knowing any of the fundamental rules is something I would not recommend you do. DMs are busy as it is so make their lives easier by learning as much of the rule as you can (you don't need to memorize them since the books are there to be referenced) so the DM doesn't have to pause the game frequently to explain the rules, classes, spells, etc. to you.
Thank you all very much! I will get to reading and watching all of these then get looking for a game to join!
Glad to help @autumn blaze
are the campaigns posted in #looking-for-players newcomer friendly? I know the basics and such but i have only played with friends and we use a lot of homebrew rules
Some are, some aren't! You'll have to check on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes the descriptions will let you know outright, but sometimes you'll have to reach out to the DM.

Hello, looking for some advice/inspiration... been following DnD for a bit content/reading wise and have been wanting to play for months, grabbed the player handbook and watched some basic rule guides, character creation and a wee bit of lore. I want to play in campaigns , but am somewhat worried as it would be my first campaign and even if there are groups willing to take in new players/beginners i feel like it would be annoying having a new person in a group.... anyways please throw advice in my face
If a group says they’re newbie-friendly, trust them. If they aren’t actually, it’ll become apparent rather quickly, and you can leave the game knowing it wasn’t a good fit anyway.
Everyone’s there to have fun. Try not to forget it—they’re not showing up to judge you. While new players can definitely change the dynamic, it isn’t always a bad thing! Virtually everything in the game is new to them, which can remind older players the excitement they felt when they got started.
Plus, everyone has to start somewhere at some point; a good group will understand that so long as you yourself are honest with them about what you do/don’t know. The better you can set yourself up to know things before the game is a good strategy. You might look to join some one-shots as those would let you test out your knowledge without worrying about being a long-term burden (or whatever concerns you may have).
hello!
Anybody recommend a video to learn dnd quickly
It’s not going to be quick, i think you should accept that
But the pin has some

can all classes use the ready action?
Yes
are there any other acctions like these?
Actions in Combat:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#ActionsinCombat
But that doesnt say what can be activated by anyone
Btw can you do difficulty like dc 7 and any other number that doesn't divide by 5
What? There are no restrictions on the types of actions by any class
Why would the Ready action be limited to certain classes?
DC can be any number, if you so choose. Spellcasting DC's for instance, are based off the casters stats, so usually won't be divisible by 5.
The table provides multiples of 5 because it's easy to remember, but there's nothing wrong with you saying "hm, this is harder than Medium but not as hard as Hard, I'm going to set it at 17"
Wb hide?
Oh you cant hide with a bonus action... nvm
Spellcasting dc?
A spellcaster has a DC for their spells.
Btw 20 on a skill check isnt an automatic success, but wb 20 on a hit die?
8 + PB + mod
??
You don't roll a d20 for Hit Dice. Are you thinking of Attack Roll?
Attack roll*
When casting a spell that would cause the target to perform a Saving Throw, the difficulty of that saving throw is determined by the caster's Spell Casting DC, which is set at 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Skill Modifier (INT for Wizards, CHR for sorcerors and Warlocks, WIS for Druids and Clerics...etc.)
I thought spellcasters roll a hit die...?
Most spells will either have the caster roll an attack roll against the target's AC, or have the target roll a saving throw against the caster's Spellcasting DC.
Take for example, Dominate Monster.
Yes, a Nat20 is an automatic successful hit for an Attack Roll.
Hit Die and Attack Rolls are two separate and different things.
Hit Die is when you roll your hit points per level or for healing during a Short Rest.
I KEEP ON CALLING THEM HIT DIE DARN IT
Perhaps you should re-read the Basic Rules again...
Lol
Or a simpler pair of examples:
With Firebolt, the caster needs to hit a target, so it comes down to their sharp-shooting skills. They roll an attack roll, and its got to beat the target's AC.
With Fireball, the caster is just throwing down a huge explosion. The targets in the area all roll a Dexterity check to get out of the way. The difficulty of this check is the spellcaster's DC.
The approach you use will be stated by the spell text. If it says "attack roll", then the caster is rolling against AC. If it says "saving throw", then the target rolls against the DC. I think there may be instances where both happen, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.
Does it only cut damage in half on a failed save check or am I stupid
And attack roll would be with spell casting bonus?
The wizard for example:
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier
The spell will tell you what happens. Sometimes, a successful save check halves damage. Sometimes it negates damage or blocks an effect.
alr I think I got this
So when you throw an improvised projectile it does 1d4, right? What about improvised melee?
same 1d4 (+modifier)
- what modifier 😭
well you ususally add your strenght modifier to melee damage, and your dex modifier to the damage of ranged attacks
(some exceptions are lined out in the thrown and finesse weapon properties)
like, íf you hit with a mace for example, you do 1d6+str damage. you also add that +str to the damage of improvised melee attacks
Hey guys, just a quick question. Does D&D Beyond have everything i need to play D&D? Not that i get used to it and then find out that its missing stuff about the Game. For example i tryed searching for Thornwhip on my Druid and cant find it. I guess its because Thornwhip was a Version 5 Cantrip and not a 5e but im not really sure thats why i wanna ask.
TLDR: Can i use D&D Beyond for the rest of my life for D&D without missing out on stuff and having everything everytime aviable? Like how good would you recommend it
DnDBeyond is the official digital toolset for D&D 5e. It can have all the official D&D 5e materials, assuming you buy the digital books on DnDBeyond (anything that is not in the System Reference Document (SRD) is not free and must be purchased/licensed).
Hello guys 😁
Welcome
Thank you 😁😁😁
I know maybe is the wrong category but I'll introduce myself!
A Brazilian woman called Thais Duraes, she's famous because she is the original voice of Katarina from the tekken series
Well welcome! This channel is specifically for new-to-D&D folks to ask questions without it getting lost in the chatter of other channels.
Best language to start?
For a character? Common. Widely used across most settings and even homebrew games. Because many folks don't like role-playing language barriers all the time.
Uhm...i mean abyssal, celestial... 😂
Yeah - common is a language
Oooh wait
Then likely it would go to elven, dwarven, and possibly draconic.
I see undercommon
I already decided my role guys
Got a character concept?
I'm a wizard! Since I like to do some heals 😁
My advice from you is...the standard array
Wizards typically are less healing oriented then say clerics. But lots of spells. Lots of spells.
I still keep going 😂
Nothing personal
I like heals because I'm inspired by another in-game person. Mercy from overwatch!
Standard array is a good choice if you don't have a group yet - different D&D groups have different ways of generating stats from either dice rolling, dice rolling with modifications, standard array, or point buy.
Standard array is a good one though since many groups will allow it without issue.
My question is that I'm going to do 8,10,12,13,14,15
In order of course starting from strength
You'll want to have your intelligence high as it increases the amount of spells you can prepare. And just generally improves your spellcasting.
Thank you for the answer, im not sure if i wanna use it because we are a group of 5 people and i guess that everyone needs to buy all books on all 5 accounts.. makes more sence to get the physical copys i guess
If you all pool your resourcs together, you could have someone buy a master tier subscription which unlocks content sharing, then everyone could buy books and share it with the group in a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing enabled.
Sorry animated stickers get annoying.
thanks
uhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
guys?
about my heigth? i'm not american but how do i type 6 ft?
6'
i did the conversion of 185 cm
or type it as 6 ft
I didnt knew about that thank you very much! I instantly recommended that to my group. I think that is a great deal if you split the money between everyone
i finished guys!
in which category is that i want to do a photo about my character?
We have #dnd-arts-and-crafts for displaying your D&D art. If it's not your own, make sure to credit and link back to the original artist. We do not allow AI generated art either.
Ah! If you have an image of it you can create a link on an image sharing site and share it. If it's on DnDBeyond you can just paste the url to the sheet.
and paste it to #dnd-discussion
Here or #character-discussion would be best
hello everyone
I used to watch the twitch/dnd channel quite a bit in the past, but noticed that that latest show was 2 years ago. Does this mean that the dnd twitch channel is not being used any more? I do notice recent videos on their official youtube channel. Is twitch dead for them, or possibly just in hiatus for now?
how do you calculate the average stat roll?
assuming its 4d6 and take the 3 highest instead of 3d6?
Yep, take the 3 highest, discard the lowest.
but what would the average for that be? because 3d6 has an average roll of 10.5 (max 18, so half that+half number of dice), but im not sure how to calculate a subtraction.
Are you trying to find the mathematical average or create an average character?
anydice.com allows you to see graphs and works with drop lowest
wait no it doesnt lmao
It’s 10
So the average is a commoners stats
its about 13 from 4d6 drop lowest
3.5+3.5+3.5=10.5 rounded down to 10
the fact that you knowingly drop the lowest result of 4d6s makes the results coalesce at the higher end of the 3d6 distribution similar to monty hall problem
how does same initiative work
D&D Beyond still streams every week.
Like a tie?
"If a tie occurs, the DM decides the order among tied DM-controlled creatures, and the players decide the order among their tied characters. The DM can decide the order if the tie is between a monster and a player character. Optionally, the DM can have the tied characters and monsters each roll a d20 to determine the order, highest roll going first." - dndbeyond
At my tables I always ran it as as highest Dex goes first.

Online
I'd recommend using Roll20, it's a pretty good free platform. Do you have friends you're planning on playing with, or are you looking for a group?
Wife is gone for a couple nights. Wondering if anyone has room for a newbie in a one-shot? I've read the basic rules and the PHB and all but haven't played (besides Baldur's Gate 3).
You could try checking in #looking-for-players.
I am indeed looking for a group
Then I'll second the suggestion to check in #looking-for-players for a group. Having said that, @kind swallow and @hollow vigil , are either of you busy right now?
I have some time to kill, I could run a battle or two in Roll20 and run you through the basics
Sure
I have a "campaign" with some basic pre-made character sheets and some monsters
I'm free. That'd be really great and appreciated!
Aight, I'll make a group chat rq
why does the only crossbow that appears in my campaign in inventory customization is the light one?
This sounds like a #ddb-support question, if you are using D&D Beyond? But it may be because you are setting up a characer whose class gives them the option of having a Light Crossbow as part of their starting equipment, but not other types.

okie dokies
What is the point of ability scores if we only use the modifiers?
They are used in some situations (such as calculating jump distance) and also the base score is necessary when you get an ASI whether the modifier increases or not.
Well...
Depending how high or low your Ability Score is, you can calculate your jump distance, monks/barbarians AC and other things
It also encompasses the training or proficiency in that score.
Saying 7 in Charisma, will mean you are not so communicative, and 18 in Dexterity will mean you're agile and very quick to react, sneaky and etc.
It does. But now allow me to ask.
How you will then calculate the AC by modifiers, if without the exact number in your ability scores, you won't know exactly what is your modifier then
Basically it determines how good/bad you are at certain things. Such as jump distance, carring capacity and etc
I'm just starting my first dm sessions so really I'm just venting how convoluted all the stats seems to be compared to modern rpgs systems.
Oh... DnD 5e isn't really that complicated
you cant post images here what lol
i wanted to post my char sheet and see what im missing lol
Well.. a bit.
And yeah, you can't post pictures
Send me a link in the DM's, I can check it
You can link to images.
You can post a link to your character in #character-discussion
alr
Compared to other more complex TTRPG's like Cyberpunk Red for example, 5e is real smooth
Well, given that D&D is the grandfather of TTRPGs and not much has changed in 50 years for the ability scores...
To this day, some of key mechanics in CPR are crashing my mind.
@cobalt frigate Yeah. After discussing it a bit I get why modifiers are more user friendly than throwing entire ability scores around. But still.
I never played other TTRPGs (although I've owned source books) so I can't judge the complexity/simplicity of the different rulesets.

What's your favorite class
How many short rests should be in between long rests
As many as the PCs are willing to take (assuming they're in a safe area for at least an hour).
Hey all, never played D&D before but I like fantasy lore and RPGs.. Ultima Online, Elder Scrolls, etc. Would D&D be for me?
Sure. D&D is a tabletop RPG that's a collaborative group game (usually around 4 to 6 players (including the Dungeon Master).
You can play it in person or virtually online (the latter is more common after the past few years of the pandemic).

How to properly handle the net is always a challenge
My bad
Just as much as u need to read the basic set j
Primordially PHB
Unless you want to DM, that alone will teach u all
If you want another options after you're already familiarized, TCE and XGE will give you more options but arent mandatory
Would you recommend one of those over the other?
PHB is the one you wanna read. Others are compliments
Assuming you desire to be a player only
Right, I have the PHB- wondering if there is a preference of TCE or XGE for first expansion

One quick question
So i want to play irl with friends
Is it enough for me to have the dnd starter kit or do i need more stuff?
Starter kit and dice are really all you need
You might want more, like the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual and Dungeon Master's Guide but really once you have the starter kit and enough dice, you can play
The starter set has everything you should need to play that campaign. Everything else is a luxury or convenience:
- more dice so you don't have to share or use a rolling app
- a screen for the DM so you don't have to hide your notes
- miniatures and printouts so you can visualise the battle
All of it is helpful but not necessary.
And then if you find you like it, the group should get a copy of the Player Handbook and Monster Manual, and maybe the dungeon masters guide (which isn't actually that helpful a lot of the time!)
oh i see
i saw that u get a premade adventure with a starter kit
but can i make my own adventure with just the starter kit or do i need those books for it?
Yeah, you can totally make your own.
The starter kit only goes for a few levels, so then you can continue with those characters in a campaign if your own making, or start it up with brand new characters.
For cheap battle maps the back of wrapping paper sometimes has a grid printed on it or find a couple of cheap chess sets in a pound store put them side by side your got a 40ft by 80ft playing area
/looking-for community to play with very new to dnd
I know the basics though have played with a group of friends growing up
If you’re looking to join a community, you should go to the #looking-for-community channel and reply to any that interest you.
I noticed there was a mention of a 'level 3 campaign' in #looking-for-players, what does that actually mean
You start with lvl 3 characters
Some campaigns will start at a higher level whether it is a higher tier of a campaign or because a DM prefers to allow players to skip a few levels to get to their subclasses; postings will generally state what that level will be.
The main thing you'll be short on making your own campaign is enemy statblocks. Youll have some in the starter kit, and there's a good number that are published for free as part of the SRD (the open part of DnD). For more, they will be in books, particularly the Monster Manual. You can homebrew them of course, but when you are starting out it's best to rely on published material as it's already got a sense of balance in mind
Oh!!! I see (: Thanks everyone!
Ok so imma do it here because I don't want to interrupt the dm discussion channel
Ok so a little bit of background: I'm planning on playing my first campaign and it's all home made the first session is about disappearing people and stuff like food and building materials and the party and a bunch of other adventure are tasked with solving the problem and I am currently writing about the Materials part of the story: The cobalts are stealing materials and food to feed the half dragon that rules them(the party will be about level two so he's really weak) and build the secret base in the mountains BUT the half dragon is taking the food to the secret wivern in the cave... And the party goes inside does some stuff and they eventually get caught and put to a secret prison in the cave they meet an elf rouge that was also trying to solve the problems of the town he says that he will distract the guard's for everyone to make an escape as he leaves the party tries to escape but hears a load bang and screaming and the rouge kinda messed up and let out the wyvern and now they will be escaping.... SO they after some puzzles and stuff they escape and above the exit there are a bunch of rocks put in case the wyvern escapes and let's say they kill it with the rocks what now do I go to the next segment or.... idk what about the cobalts and the half dragon... The half dragon is evil and they will probably fight but what about the cobalts... And how do I move to the next segment
There's more to it like stuff to do in jail and in the town (too much if you ask me) but this like 1/100 of what will go down in the first part of the game
Okay first things first:
- What if your players don't care to help the town
- What if your players don't "go inside and do some stuff"
Prepare for those eventualities. It's not wrong to force them, or to have all paths lead back to that eventuality, but it's better if they feel motivated to do it.
Setting them up in an escape situation is classically very good, because they will always be motivated down a path that leads to more freedom.
You might also be planning too much. This already sounds like about half of the content you would get in a 1-5 starter campaign.
And finally, I don't see clearly what the next segment is. The baddies have been stealing; if the players investigate they will get trapped, and then seek to escape...and when they escape, what are you planning next? Do you want to just have them either kill both the enemies or go to the town and then have the enemies chase them there?
This does feel more like a #dm-discussion topic, we shouldn't gum up the newcomers channel
I already planned for what ifs like that but I'm talking about this moment
What now if that happens
No I'm saying, it's better to interrupt the #dm-discussion channel, not discuss it here.
Ok so imma go therw
When it comes to running a 1 shot, what preperation should I do?
So i have a question, how can i get started in dnd? like do i need the dice and players handbook or is there a website for that or sth?

Oh i see,so i should make an account in d&dbeyond
It's not a requirement. I play D&D without any D&D beyond. But it is one of the most convenient tools, and a lot of people use it. It was originally an independent company, but it was so useful that WotC bought it and made it the official platform.
And how do you play without it?
I have books (I like to support my local gamestore), and I use other platforms. My group predominently plays online using a Virtual Tabletop, and while I started out with Roll20, I now use FoundryVTT. These are all third party products, and if you are curious about those, it would be best to continue that conversation in #third-party
Pretty interesting
But also, the classic way to play was just to have paper, and the books!
But i dont have money to spend y'know...
Also as far as gamestores go,i dont have any here
DnD is a tool that helps you manage the character sheet on a digital device. You can do it the way folks did it before computers: with a paper character sheet.
You still need the books to get the rules, character options, etc
You can play with the basic rules if you want to put in the time. They are all you need to know in order to play some DnD.
There are free resources to get started
Oh i see
Whenever i get better connection ill try on my laptop
Maybe at home or sth
Oh also,i saw there is a spell called wish, you can basically wish for anything right?
Yes. Wish lets you cast
- Any spell, level 8 or below
- A number of predefined wishes
- Any effect you can imagine, if you ask your DM - but the DM is encouraged to think creatively about how the wish is fulfilled, if at all.
Question: can anyone point me in the right direction for starting and registering an Adventurers League so it shows up on the website when a search is made?
Thanks in advance
I wish for a meteor spell to hit the final boss a 100 times
What is an adventurers league?
#adventurers-league might help
WOTC’s official organized play structure. Usually run by volunteers locally and at particupating game stores
An Adventure’s League chapter will run games open to the public (with some sort of sign up), using pre-written campaign materials that generally allow anyone to jump in
There are some character creation rules to standarize players and do some balancing.
Most of the time, game stores will participate and offer a space for the local AL to play, since it brings in new and regular players who will probably buy stuff
Meanwhile WOTC theoretically is getting a soft, landing spot for new players to get into DnD And buy more stuff
Note that if you wish for anything other than replicating a single lower-level spell, you’ll risk permanently losing access to wish.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/wish
We might be getting afield from newcomer talk
I see thank you
Are you using a pre-written one-shot or making one of your own?
I intend on making my own
What's your, and your party's level of familiarity with DnD so far? All new starters?
I am decently new, but my party is somewhat experienced
I worry that I wont live up to their expectations
i know nothing
If you are worried, you might want to just find and adapt an existing one-shot, as it will probably have been well-tested.
There's a ton of stuff you could do and approaches you can take, but my prep tends to break down into
PEOPLE - NPCs and what they know; also hostiles the group may encounter
PLACES - where the group might go, descriptions for those locales, who is in them, and what they might find (either in terms of plot and/or treasure)
It's not a bad idea to try to include some of all three pillars (combat, roleplay, and exploration) so that your group, no matter their style/preferences, will each get a little something. Also, if possible, design challenges that could use the skills of any given build/class (something for a strong character, a sneaky one, a magic one, a bookish one, etc.).
With familiar players, I would suggest you consider maybe 3 combat encounters, and some non-combat checks.
Personally, I think a one-shot works best when things start right with the action. Don't start them in the tavern, but rather skip to the "final dungeon".
So me and my friends are brand new to dnd and want to try it out so where do i start or what should i do???

Okay thankss, so how i pick a map etc? like can i get one from this server?
You could grab a written adventure, official or not, and those will likely have the maps you need, both of the general area and maps where specific encounters might happen.
ohhh okay thanks, because i wanna see a template or something to just to help
https://www.reddit.com/r/battlemaps/ is very handy.
Lost Mine of Phandelver is free on D&D Beyond. You can also browse DMsGuild.
So the D&D books help me make the game or play a game??
Both
Some are "adventure books" - these will contian maps, stories, story-specific treasures and enemies.
Others are more like "rule books" - these will contain rules, classes, subclasses, enemies, spells, compendia of items, and advice for running a game.
^ Yeah. It depends on the book. The Player's Handbook has the core rules of the game. The Monster Manual has a ton of monsters for the DM to throw into adventures. The Dungeon Master's Guide helps you design adventures. There are other books with adventures, setting information, subclasses, spells, and more.
The most useful, by far.
Yeah, whether you're a player or DM, it's the most important book in the game.
You don't need it to play since the Basic Rules are free, but it expands your options greatly.
Player's Handbook is the rulebook to read.
Monster Manual is usually required for most of the campaign books, but without it you can still run the creatures in the basic rules.
The Dungeon Master's Guide is...really not that useful! Lots of optional/variant rules, and a guide on creating your own world, that isn't necessarily the best content on that topic.
Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything are the two main supplement books - sort of like expansion packs for subclasses, spells, etc.
I would say the dungeon masters guide is far more useful and important than the monster manual, which is easily skippable
It can be a lot, but you don't have to know it all to get playing. Did you read the rulebook before trying any sport? Probably not.

Hello! I'm trying to find a group but I can only play 2 times a month due to work :)
I'm not really sure how to find this though
See the messages above yours for how to find games.
biweekly is not an uncommon frequency, don't worry about it. That's how frequently me and my friends play.
Oh i understand how to find a group, I just wasn't sure how to find them for biweekly
If it isn't in the description, you can bring this up if/when you find a group and get to the scheduling phase. My group also plays biweekly, so it's not unheard of.
Hey sweet cheek gamers,
I have never played before and am looking for a group to get started with! I have no clue what im doing.
