actually i might pick mage hands as it could be useful for doing stuff like making sure there are no traps or poking a chest to see if it's a mimic
thats a pretty good reason right
Or make use of it to impress a crowd, or Pick Up a small object you could Not reach otherwise
And earn money?
wow what a great idea
Yes that is why it is a utility cantrips. It can Open Up Options Out of combat
Could i also use it to get something like a key from a guard without them knowing?
also works well with my criminal background as i have extra stealth points
Well Most DMs will allow you to try to earn a few coins this way. But you really want to use it as a Tool to interact.
Like do a Performance to attrackt a growd. Then someone Rolls perception to See If a Kind of Person you Need for your Mission is in the crowd. If they liked the Performance they might be more inclined to Help.
Ofc to Back this Up Performance skillproficiency, and maybe eventually the actor feat can Help with making it an actual Asset in the Partys arsenal
wow thats so smart
is there stuff in dnd, like being able to buy a book with spells in it?
Like in the campaign i currently Play i Play a Bard with Expertise in Performance. For month in ingame time He performed every day in the Main city square. By now Like the whole City Heard about him and in Extension Out group. Like more than once, the DM used the "we looked for the Performer wois Said to do Dangerous jobs" as a way for NPC questgivers to find us.
It May Not give me any fancy reward but it Sure feels damn nice
huh i see
sorry if this sounds dumb but whats the highest damaging spell for a warlock with fiend patron
That is a Wizard gimmik again.
But there are spellscrolls that give you a one time use of a spell, or Magic items that let you Cast a specific spell a number of Times per day.
Basically you (or the DMs Imagination) and the DMs good Graces are the Limit (and obv Balance)
i see thank you
i might be a wizard for my next character a necromancer since that seems cool
Later on you will be able to make your eldritch Blast stronger.
Aside that at lvl 5 you can Pick fireball
How do I make it stronger?
At lvl 2 you can Pick invocations, 2 of them. Some invocations add additional effects to your eldritch blast
what are some examples?
Agonizing Blast for more damage
Repelling Blast to Push an enemy away on hit
are there any other invocations?
But D&D is Not a Game of big Numbers (compared to Most Video Games)
It Is more about the adventure the Player Characters experience
Just Google for d&d warlock invovations
also is it common to find heavily combat based sessions, cause i dont like the roleplay as much, but am fine with quite a bit of it
I would rather Not Type down more here
Ofc. Then prob a Dungeon Crawl is what you are looking for
sorry to ask so many questions, but what is that?
But you say now that you dont Like roleplay. Give it a try still, after 1 or 2 really good RP Interactions you might Change your mir nd🙃
Yeah maybe I will maybe I wont
Basically a series of encounters the Party has to face to reach their Goal, mostly of Combat, trap or Puzzle Nature.
Usually Not that much Interaction like "win by diplomacy" and "Talk Our way Out" in this Kind of game
Dungeon crawling is basically just a dungeon. A series of room with challenge, treasure, different corridors... The challenge in the dungeon crawling consists of exploring the ruined fortress, the cave system, the temple or whatever and get the loot and kill the bosses.
and there's nothing outside of that?
also i was looking in looking for players and this person said that they're playing by voice and (rolls if you so choose) what do they mean by rolls?
It varies depending on the DM really.
Discord for voice calls, and a VTT(Like roll20) for Rolls and Maps is the Most Common thing
are there any only text-based dnd playing servers you guys know of that you could invite me to?
Yeah highly DM dependant what you will Encounter. But i would say Dungeon Crawl is in general the Type of game with least RP and Most combat
Not really, but you can Check Out #looking-for-community to See If there are any in the Posts
Aside that Just make a entry in #find-a-game for the looking for DM Channel, and Just Put in the description what you are looking for
are there any places i could go for beginners, as in like beginner campaigns

• Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
• Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
• Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Like everyone else has suggested the looking channels are your best bet here there are other places like roll20, Facebook, Reddit, find a local game store etc. finding a game isn’t like joining an MMO and loading into a server it take a while to find a DM and then they have to prep the sessions so be patient and spread your net wide
ok 👍
Yeah, there aren't DMs just sitting around 24/7 waiting to run games
This is a game run by humans, not by computers
Mornin'
wonder if this server has a dice roller bot
is there a specific chat for rolling dice or something?
There isn't, no.
I wanna roll my stats in this server idk if this chat is ok to use
I'm using 4d6 drop lowest then assign
Is that something you and your DM agreed to?
I'm just making a character to make a character for the fun of it
Just to get used to the process
Then you can use any dice roller, yes?
ig lol
Or you can…roll actual dice?
I have no actual d6
no actual dice i use virtual out of necessity
i will use google to roll my dice lol
You can just Google 4d6.
ye
first stat number be 13 that's decent ig
guys i got a 6 damn it i'll just put it on intelligence or something my character is more of a brute anyways
dragonborn barbarian
got another 13 then a 10
are these stats low or average for stats?: 13, 6, 13, 10, 11, 8
low
Yeah, I think the standard array total is higher than that.
compare them to the standard array option which is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
'S why I prefer point-buy.
I'm gonna have to choose which stats are gonna be bad and which ones are gonna be in the minecraft void lol
a 6 is so trash that's like a -2 modifier
I'm making this character for fun so I'm literally just gonna roll again cause I'm not using this guy anyhow
I got a 14 so starting off slightly better lol
I generally feel like any character made outside of a game is just practice anyway.
AYO WHAT I GOT A 16 I FEEL LIKE THAT'S GOOD
Aaaaand it seems i got a 5 god damn it
With a +2 bonus, it'd make it an 18, which is nice to have.
I got a 14 and a 16 then every other stat is below 15 but above 10 with one being a 5
How do these stats be looking?: 14, 16, 5, 13, 10, 12
Istg just rolling stats is fun for some reason
Pretty good all in all.
cool
So do I wanna put the highest ones in strength and dex and the 13 can go in con do you think? I'm making a barbarian dragonborn which i think is important info probably lol.
The quick build advice has CON second highest, and I do that with almost every character myself.
aight makes sense. Con does affect HP I think and also it has other useful benefits for being second highest
there are a lot of times when con saves are important
Like when you're poisoned for example innit
If you’re just gonna roll stats until you get good numbers, …just use standard array or point buy
The point of rolling is to accept the randomness
I'm making a character for the fun of it. Also, rolling stats is weirdly fun. It's chaotic and entertaining to see the numbers that come up.
That'd be more a question for #dnd-discussion or #dm-discussion
ok thank you
is a warlock a good choice for a beginner? Cause that's my class currently on my first ever character
Warlocks operate a little funky, so it wouldn't be my recommendation for a beginner, but any class can be learned.
https://youtu.be/oH-4Lkx8xsA guide to warlock
They operate differently than any other spellcaster
Id say its a decent one just take a minute to get used to the lingo of it. I started with Warlock when I first started.
Hey all. I just DM'ed my very first game. It feels amazing. The only thing I still need to figure out is how to get sound to work with AboveVTT
Anyone know of any introduction games? waiting on my friend to go to her group, but want to dip my toes before hand 🙂
how do i make a character

Still making that just for fun character and I wanna make their barbarian subclass Zealot but my character doesn't worship a deity so they can't be marked by one theoretically. Could it be interesting to say that a deity has taken interest in my character despite their disbelief and that my character believes his power due to this deity comes instead from his own strength and willpower?
I know this is a just for fun character but I'm treating this character like i'm actually gonna use him
Oh, and he's a still respected ex-army dragonborn btw I think it's a cool idea
We’re beyond basic questions and into #character-discussion
I'm a new player who played DND with my college doing one-shots that also allowed for us to lvl up characters decently fast, so I want to know what the difference is between a traditional campaign and that?
How fast is "decently fast"?
Honestly it all depends on the dm and the game being run. Some people level up every session, some will go months before a level up. There is no "standard"
All characters start at level 5, and if you complete a certain amount of games you level up, and the amount of games you need to lvl up increases the higher your character's level is
so around 4/5 games to level up once you hit levels 9 and 13 respectively
That's definitely a different way of doing it
Yeah, but it was fun. The only problem is that it was almost always combat-based one-shots, so I didn't really learn how to use my character's special niches or class features or whatever, so instead of feeling like an artificer I just felt like a wizard
So in short campaigns are different depending on how the DM plans for the campaign to go?
My current campaign started at level 5 and after one year the PCs are level 7. It'll be probably at least 2.5 years they'll reach level 20 to fight the BBEG. They're currently using their 20 (game) days of downtime to do personal side quests.
ohh
I've never done a "serious" game of dnd before but after listening to a ton of dnd stories and stuff it sounds fun. Only thing I worry about is games that are RP heavy in vc since I suck at that
Hello how is everyone
good hbu
Role playing can be as basic as "My character says <thing> and does <other thing>" - no voices or acting needed.
Good just got into DND and make my character and delete him and make him again repeated 9 times
Getting some XP on character creation I see 😉
Trying I named him after a character in chowder
Mung Daal?
Shnitzel
Ayyyy
But I made him a half orc tho
I have him created on dnd beyond I thinking of rolling for his ability
Rolling for ability?
Yeah
I don't think I know what that is?
Abilities scores
Is it okay to make a character based on an existing fictional figure
Ohh that, I was overthinking it.
I was thinking of basing a conjurer on Megumi Fushiguro from the manga , JJK
Oh everybody does this to some capacity
I think it should be fine as long as it's not exactly like him
Is that alright or
Yes it’ll just have some traits
As well as his main schpel, summoning lol
As long as it has your own personal twist/spin or is not 100% carbon copy then it should be fine
I agree
My character not going to say radda radda when he speaks
They won't be mad, I guess it would just kinda be weird if it doesn't fit the setting of the campaign ig
Idk I feel like that wasn't a good enough answer but that's the best I got
So only mediocretely based character
I’ll just leave some traits blank for DM to create or intwine for
Do it like movies who say "based on a true story". The premise of the movie is based on a true story but like 99% of it is total bs
I have another question, but it seems more fit for #character-discussion
Might be the best place to ask
How do I join a group or game

Can always start here
People will direct you if there's better, but can't know without the question
game master, they control the enviroment and whatever the story continues to
Dungeon Master is like a stage director - they set the scene, describe the setting, determine what rules are in effect and ask for dice rolls when warranted.
The introduction here in the Basic Rules has a good explanation:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/introduction
for example, they’ll say stuff like “blank player gets ambushed by bandits” and the players can react by such
They help direct the story/adventure yes.
But again, this is a social collaborative storytelling RPG game - so the players can also play a role in helping determine and fill out the story as they play their characters.
Hey I'm trying to cast the gust spell and I'm noticing its components
v and s??
new here btw*
Hello! I am new to DnD, looking for a Dungeon Master and player buddies
V and S stands for Vocal and Somatic - "Vocal" means the spell has magic words that need to be spoken to cast and Somatic means the spell has specific hand gestures that need to be performed to cast it. Those conditions come into play normally when a character is in a tense situation - if they try to cast a spell with V and S components it is not subtle and may set off an attack (unless they use sleight of hand). Also if they can't speak or can't move their hands, they can't cast spells with those components either. - Hopefully that answers your question

how bad of an idea would it be to dm a game with 0 genuine dnd experience
So I think a lot depends on your energy and desire to learn enough of the rules to feel okay running the game and then how comfortable you are at helping to manage a social group.
But DM'ing is just another way to play D&D IMO
I know people who started D&D with DMing and I know people who still haven't tried it
Really just depends on what works for you
hmm i guess ill have to think about this. i havent socialised in months so that might be bad but the rest of what you two said seems fine
I mean if the rest of your group is down with it or doesn't know the game much I don't see an issue DMing with no expirence - All you need to know is how to run checks and combat really...
*Verbal
Verbal, Somatic, and Material
-
Verbal - the magic words: abracadabra, leviosa (leviOsa, not leviosA), etc.
-
Somatic - special hand gestures: a mudra, naruto ninja style finger moves, etc.
-
Material - physical items: eye of newt, tongue of bat, etc.
Hey there,
I was just wanted to ask about where I can find DnD groups/places to play in my area.
Google your local libraries and game stores to see if they hold open table games
Googling for adventures league groups near you can also be useful
You'd need to look at what's available in your area - local game store, places selling Magic the Gathering Cards, libraries, you might check Facebook for some local groups, google search your area + D&D, possibly meetup
I am a new comer to the D&D world and I just have a few questions. How long do gaming sessions normally last? How often do adventurers get together to play?
3-6 hours and once a week is kind of average
I think once per week is pretty optimistic for many parties but it’s certainly a good goal to aim for
My group has had 30 sessions in about a year, so about every two weey
My party is meeting every two weeks, sometimes just ones a month
yeah we do biweekly sessions
My party would optimally do weekly sessions but both times so far it’s been with a 2 week gap bc things have come up
i highly recommend looking for possible dnd groups on reddit if you are okay with having sessions primarily online (usually through discord). i was accepted into a newcomer-friendly campaign like three weeks ago, we've only had session zero & one but it was all so much fun that i cant wait for next week (meeting primarily on mondays in the late afternoon)
Very bad
👆hard disagree, everyone has to start somewhere. If you can tell a story and follow the basic rules then you can DM a game of DnD.
I started DM'ing with 0 game experience, and I've been doing great
couple decades in, my current campaign is coming up on 6 1/2 years, nothing says you can't jump in fresh
Yeah, DMing can take some extra effort, but it can be a lot of fun. You could start with a small practice session if you want something low-stakes.
And if you need to pause to look up a rule or just make something up to keep the game going (and then look it up and share the answer later), that’s totally fine.
I jumped in to DM’ing with nearly zero experience in the game as a whole.
Jump in. Make mistakes. Get messy. The important bit is having players who aren’t willing to take advantage of anothers’ lack of knowledge.
I know this is a total noob question, but reflavoring allowed in AL, if the stats aren’t messed with, in any way?
More specifically, could I call a Glaive a Scythe, if nothing about it changes, beyond the name and look?
The folks in #adventurers-league might be better able to answer that.
Gotcha.
How does thirst, food and rest works?
Well there are explicit rules for food and water, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#FoodandWater
But to Ratty's point, they're not always used by the DM.
They may not hold you to the water rules until you're in a desert where water is scarce, for example.
Thank you for sharing this. I'm planning on jumping in, to be a DM. Probably a home game or three, before sharing my time at a store.
Nope!
DM makes the world whatever they want
Lore is just the official starting point. Keep as much or little as you want
Hi i’m new in the game

Okay, thank u so much 🙂
I created a character in D&D beyond
Okay but did you read the rules?
All about the characters and how to choose/create them
It was a very long process lol
So what in DnD has changed since my last campaign in 1979?
I'm looking to get back into the game again --finally.
Um, lots. The lore, the rules, the general playstyle. I wasn't even alive in 1979, but my impression is it's a significantly different game in some ways, though you can still see traces of the origins.
FYI I have bought some of the Online books so far and have been reading through them as well.. created some char. on DND Beyond...just need to refresh I guess LOL
we only had the Basic and Expert rules back then, I know a few friends of mine started collecting the AD&D books in the early 80's but I had quit playing at that time because i moved and nobody where we moved to played sooo NOW... I have a whole ONLINE group of people I can reach out to and figure this all out again 🙂 (kinda excited TBH).
I do have a son that plays and is in a couple campaigns and that is what got me interested again after all these years, I am just not cool enough to hang out with his crowd though LOL
Well, if you've played before, you know how to learn the game, so I suspect you'll have an easier time compared with folks who are getting into the hobby for the first time. Hopefully you continue feeling that excitement as you get yourself better oriented.
This channel is a good place for questions, though folks will point you elsewhere if the discussion is better suited for another channel on the server.
You can re-use characters in so far as the same basic build and concept, but they'd be more like alternate universe versions of those characters, since each would be connected to the setting (and have the backstory appropriate to a given game's starting level).
You certainly could have a small stable of character ideas and cycle through them, but part of the fun (in my view) is coming up with new characters that fit the world and party.
There is no requirement to make a new character for every game. The only limits are your Dm’s rules
Hello everyone I am new to D&D and it is great to meet you all.
i'm new too 😄
i have maybe a silly question: how easy is it to homebrew a completely different kind of setting from the "classic" D&D one? or am I better off looking into a completely different game? I was wondering if there's any existing RPG or a version of D&D that's like more around the surreal / strange / mysterious and less about the classic world of fantasy? Something like the book "Annihilation" if anyone's familiar
It depends how much effort and time you're willing to homebrew your own campaign setting.
that's the thing, i really have no idea what's the effort involved 😄
The DMG has a section on creating your own campaign setting.
D&D's design is really meant for heroic fantasy. It does have wisps of other genres and styles in it, but it would be a lot of work to make it something else. Other games/systems are probably an easier way to engage with those themes and such.
If you want to change from heroic fantasy to sci-fi or anime inspired settings then you will probably be changing the game mechanics rather than flavour.
i see 🤔
There's a lot you can do with narration/flavor, but you have to decide if you want your genre stuff to have mechanical significance. It takes a lot more work to alter the game mechanically than it does narratively.
agreed i was going to be playing an elven rogue but now im playing a dragonborn cleric albiet a stupid one in rime of the frostmaiden
What would be a good quest to start out on for a new group of players to ease into the game ? Also, does one person have to remain the DM. Or, could people alternate each session so long as they do not alter what a previous DM has already done?
It's more common for one person to consistently be the DM, but a round-robin approach is definitely doable. It takes a little bit of coordination. Or when it's a different DM it's a different setting/adventure.
It's a lot less common for people to switch off DMing in the same campaign, but it does happen
@past storm wargamer.com has a great article on not being cliche...basically don't send your group to the cellar to fight off rats...give the story more heft - something worth losing, something that's actually awesome to game. So or like whetting new players appetites
@past storm something worthy to gain...awesome for low level characters
@past storm they are approached by someone who had something stolen from them, they know thief took the loot to the sewers. They can still fight the rats, but they come back and the patron is dead and the thing that was stolen? It's in a box the group opens and it's a treasure map (the next adventure hook, questions on who murdered their questgiver (was it for the map, was it because they tried to recover the map, is the adversary after the group?))
(You don’t need to tag the same person for every sequential message. 😅)
lol - sorry
I started my last campaign with the PCs meeting in an inn and going into the basement to kill some rats.
Except one of the rats was a cranium rat, who was mind-controlling the other rats and sending psychic whispers to the innkeeper, which was preventing him from sleeping and thus, slowly eroding his sanity.
It was also foreshadowing the mindflayers as the bbegs.
Also, my players were all new, so I felt having them start in an inn was a rite of passage for the game.
mindflayers!! sweet. Definitely a right of passage.
Is it really a cliche if you've never experienced it before?
Like are you really gonna poo-poo starting in an inn if you've never played the game before?
that's true - I've been playing since 2010, so I was thinking of myself and forgot I was in the newcomers channel. If someone has been reading a lot of novels, it could be cliche...a rat king is defeintely cool though
Nothing wrong with a classic
I was thinking about getting a D&D starter pack. Is that a good idea? If so what should I be looking for in a starter pack
I suggest trying the game out with just the free basic rules first: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
If that clicks and you find it fun, then maybe look into the books and sets.
Alright, thanks!
Random question: what’s a min-maxer?
A min-maxer is someone who optimizes their character for game mechanic reasons which can sometimes unbalance the game for the rest of the group.
I dont think thats accurate at all
A simple way to say it is specialization in an area
MAXIMIZING one area at the cost of accepting other areas will be minimized
People have different experiences with minmaxers - I have simply explained that sometimes that pursuit of optimization for game mechanics at all costs can cause issues for others playing at the same table.
More broadly: it helps to have a group whose playstyles mesh well together.
So I played AD&D from 82 to 91 or so, I remember you could do dual classes like Fighter/Illusionist is that still a thing? I look forward to re-learning a game I really enjoyed.
You can multiclass into different classes in 5e, yes.
Oh kool I'm starting with my brother and his friend is a DM we are starting in 5e. Should be interesting adding technology to it.
You do have to have the prerequisites stats to multiclass - also up to DM discretion to allow it or not at their table/game.
understood, just going with the flow to re-learn everything.
Would a "magical energy ball made from the power of nature" be force or possibly fire damage? I'm making something
Ok il send that exact message there with absolutely no changes thanks!
where does fire come into this
Idk, solar energy or smth? That's kind of a stretch though I think so idk
What's new fellow newbies
how should i get started if i literally know nothing about dnd lmao

Hi all ... Going to be running my first game with family as my party members but was wondering about something. I know that as a DM it is possible to have NPCs join the party but is it possible to have a permanent NPC to fill a role that the players are lacking?
I only have 3 players ... A ranger, a bard, and a Wizard and was wanting to put them with a barbarian who I will effectively play while leaving all the decisions to them.
Is this possible to do this without a conflict of interests being both DM and joining the party as well?
Yes, DMs can add sidekick NPCs to fill in roles
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/UA_Sidekicks.pdf
The DMG has guidance for having NPCs join the party long-term
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/creating-nonplayer-characters#NPCPartyMembers
In my experience with NPC party members, I don't really enjoy it. It's a lot to constantly remember. If I were to do it again, I'd probably have the NPC in question be nonverbal, such as a beast of some kind, but you do you.
I have no idea if you have the book, but Tasha's Cauldron also has guidance on filling the party in with Sidekicks:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/tcoe/dungeon-masters-tools#Sidekicks
Also 3 party members is plenty to manage especially for your first time dming

Got any advice for a new DM?
Check out #dm-discussion but I do recommend running a prewritten adventure (Lost Mines of Phandelvar is pretty good for new DMs/players and is free on DnDBeyond), making sure to discuss expectations and establish boundaries before playing (what's allowed at the table, how to handle disagreements), and then just focus on having fun.
Are you trying to answer an ad or post your own?
If you’re looking to join as a player, you probably want to start by answering posts in #750812887697588356.
Typically the DM will invite however many other players they need for the game.
If you’re looking for both players and DMs as part of a larger, non-traditional D&D game (like a West March or something), then you probably want to post in #looking-for-community.
so for elves who have trance does it only take 4 hours for a long rest?
if so how long does it take for a short rest
1 hour
Since that feature doesn't say it changes the length of a short rest, it doesn't.
but that makes no sense im just going to go with 1 hour
...it is 1 hour. 😅
Hey yaal im looking for advice on my arcane archer im multiclassing into ranger at 4 but wondering if i should just go full ranger now i need to keep the arcane archer in as it basicaly gives my character exactly what i want magic arrows that do stuff but im not sure where to take it from there
I'd suggest asking the folks in #character-discussion.
ah alright thanks

hey i'm watching critical role and they had an enemy with ability "slippery dash" he got away like 30ft without OA
does this count as "disengage" or is it something entirely different? i'm asking because the sentinel feat came to my mind
Likely it’s a Disengage sort of action in the vein of a goblin’s Nimble Escape.
Slippery Dash: When an attack missed him, he could use his reaction to move up to his speed without provoking opportunity attacks
Thats the ability.
Then yeah, I wouldn't expect Sentinel to work there.
Sentinel is basically "if you Disengage, I get an opportunity attack anyway", but this enemy didn't Disengage.
Goblins, for comparison:
Nimble Escape. The goblin can take the Disengage or Hide action as a bonus action on each of its turns.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16907-goblin
hm thats what i thought ok ty
still learning the basics seems like there is alot to keep track of before making a character
It's literally a Disengage, so Sentinel does indeed work against them.
I wouldn’t use professionallly produced shows with a dollop of homebrew as a baseline for what you need to know/remember.
sure sure i have different sources but it helps to get an overall idea how things work since they still play along the rules alot
Razor has a valid point, but slippery dash is built and worded like a lot of official NPC abilities, so its valid to get your head around that interaction.
so in the end its up to the DM and i should not expect my feats or class abilities to work in every scenario bc they find a way to make me suffer?
monsters sometimes have abilities that players dont have access to. sometimes those abilities counter what a player can do.
would you complain about a monster with misty step too?
not if the monster was made of mist
misty step is a 2nd level spell
for spellcasters
why would a monster need to be made of mist?
sentient wizard mist
i did not complain i just want to understand
as long as your DM doesnt specifically targets your PCs abilities to counter so you can (almost) never use them, its pretty normal
sometimes your stuff gets countered
A good DM will also make sure your abilities get chances to shine, too.
if your stuff gets countered all the time, then you need to talk to your DM
Yep there will be surprises
also true.
Common misconception is that to are playing “against” the DM, so he must be doing things against you personally. That is an outdated , and frankly, unhealtht mindset
D&D is a collaborative experience, you and your DM are working together to make a fun and interesting game
Your DM should be making encounters that challenge you but also allow you to flex your abilities
Only easy encounters would boring (combat or social encounters too). Unwinnable encounters too, although times may call for an unwinnable fight for storytelling
no i dont think its personal but dm's are playing against their players and want the monters they create to stay alive and eventually escape from encounters to challenge pc's
i was just wondering if its possible and even appropriate to create a character who is especially good at capturing enemies or if i should accept the fact that some need to get away for sake of the story
Its well and good to build in some capture ability but remember your DM is god and at the end of the day, if he wants to further an angle, he can do it
There has to be an understanding that the DM os also telling a story. Are you just trying to beat the DM, or is your character trying to catch the enemy
Your character can try, they may succeed or fail, but you (player) need to accept the outcome
Failure is part of D&D
thats what i mean lets say theres a monsterhunter or something like that who want to stop all evil hes facing and has a variety of skills to catch enemies so they never or rarely get away
if the dm has a hard time to develop the story because all foes are slain or captured on the first encounter its probably a bad idea to go that way as a player
Different DMs want different things. You should discuss what you want from the game, and hopefully you and any DM you play with can find some kind of compromise.
its not my intention to take the fun away players or dm i just try to understand what character builds are viable and where is the line you should not cross
Exactly. A session zero will identify goals and set expectations
Each table is different, so it’s really hard to generalize about what is and isn’t acceptable.
right i forgot about that
For example, I don’t allow any homebrew and I don’t truck with optimizers. Others may have no problem with those players.
thats something i struggle with after several hack&slay games where you have your own solo hero its hard to find the balance between fighting power and roleplaying especially in a group of real people
Personally, I don’t think any amount of prep will get you 100% ready for that aspect of the game. You learn what you can before diving in, then you get playing. Folks don’t commit the baseball rulebook to memory before ever picking up a bat or glove.
I definitely don't play "against" my players. We're telling a story together: one about their characters. Giving them challenges to face is just part of that story.
Whether a monsters escapes or dies or gets captured doesn't really matter to me. It shapes the story no matter how it plays out.
Embrace failure. Achieve satisfaction.
Yep. I fully expect and want my players to win in the end
Doesn't mean it's not a bumpy road sometimes
Or that they'll succeed on every challenge. But that's the goal. If I come close to TPKing a party, it's on accident, not on purpose
I will always create an NPC that I play as a PC in the game. Like the others, he/she/it is a character, in the game and part of the party trying to resolve the challenges of the current Adventure. I play My character as if I was the player and knew nothing about the Adventure or where it was heading. However, I might know something or think of something that the players do not. (roll history/insight or another check secretly IF the players get stuck)
Most folks usually recommend against that kind of thing, if only because DMNPCs can go horribly wrong
I need help with the rules
Have you read the basic rules?
Yes but I don't understand them
What specific questions do you have?
I need help with all the rules
You might try watching Handbooker Helper instead, then.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
I'm afraid you're asking a lot of random strangers on the internet to explain to you an entire book of rules.
You should check out some YouTube videos such as Handbooker Helper or WASD20's Rules School. Most folks aren't able to walk one person through all the rules.
If you have a specific question about a specific rule, we're happy to help, though.
I just want to know anything to help me understand rules
Try the link that got posted, Handbooker Helper is a great and digestible series
Ok I will
Can you give an example of a specific rule or part of the game you're trying to understand?
Here's another playlist to supplement Handbooker Helper: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLq8DIL0O-i-l5KQLdY7n9QbwSpsr6yAax
Before The Storm can help with the basics, too.
Ok I am watching the handbook helper right now
Hi new here
Welcome check out the pinned message for some useful links
do i need to read the appendixes in the basic rules
No.
whats in them
If you plan on being just a player (and not also a DM), then just read the first four chapters on character creation.
i want to be a dm
ok
Also, head on over to #dm-discussion
Hi peps 🙂
Recently started my first learning campaign and it's awesome!
This isnt really the place to dump a wall of text
Please be considerate of other people using the channel
#tales-from-the-table seems whats most appropriate
Apologies. All done 🙂
The appendices are mainly reference, though you should familiarize yourself with the one on conditions.
So a perception check is, wisdom.
And If im in 1 lvl and have proficiency in wisdom, and have 16 then Ill get +2 +2?
And DC is 15 Ill need a roll of 11
Yep, that's the process, but you get a +3 if your score is 16.
Oh so +5 😉
Yep.
You need to be proficient in it in order to add the proficiency bonus. Otherwise, it's just the relevant ability modifier.
when will the ai dm be out
¯_(ツ)_/¯
ai dm with a few ai party members, could play by yourself really
there is no AI DM
AI dm with snoop dogs AI voice
This also isn't the channel for that kind of discussion. This channel is to orient new folks to the game.
no AI DM has been announced as far as I know
brand new here, looking for a group to join rn, just joined dndbeyond, but doesnt seem like thats even possible..got me thinking about the ai...
Have you looked at the #find-a-game channel?
yea, they are all scheduled
You're trying to play this very second?
id say most sessions are probably scheduled either way
kinda, super new and just want to see wha its like
if you are looking for a group and didnt find anything here, you could check out /lfg on reddit or roll20.net
also check out the servers in #looking-for-community
D&D isn't generally built around pick-up games; it takes prep and scheduling. There are servers in #looking-for-community that do have some of that flavor, but they're the exception to how most tables play.
ive been so desperate i've been playing the dnd solo adventure's toolkit...
getting a game takes time, usually a few days at minimum
Have you looked at local game stores, clubs, adventures league, facebook, meetup, warhorn, local school, local library?
id say just be patient, its kinda like trying to find a partner but instead youre trying to find a group of at least 3 others with a matching schedule to play for 3-4 hours
Wheres that 🧐
That's a DMsGuild product: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/252355/The-Solo-Adventurers-Toolbox?filters=0_0_0_45752_0_0_0_0
how do you start getting into dnd? I only designed a character, but I dont know what else to do now.
Well I'd say the next step after familiarizing yourself with the rules is to find a group to play with.

Yup
Need a little help making a character. Joining mid-campaign at level 11. I remember something about getting a feat at level 1 but I don't know where that was from and I can't spot it in the AL Players guide. Am I just misremembering?
Is it just from the background thing?
Some DMs will allow it
AL gives a feat at lv1
Skilled or tough
If playing forgotten realms, u can also pick magic initiate
See here: #al-news-updates message
The website’s guide is old
Yeah for AL questions please use #adventurers-league - folks there can point you at the most up-to-date information.
got it
"Eldritch Adept" "Prerequisite: Spellcasting or Pact Magic feature"
does that mean any class which is able to cast spells can take this or how does it work?
Any with a class feature called “Spellcasting” or “Pact Magic”.
Random spells like ancestor barb’s clairvoyance don’t count.
Hello!
hi everyone 🙂
So how are you doing?
good u??
I am also doing good! Thank you for asking and I am glad you're doing good!
Would you take pleasure in sharing our DnD OC's together?
We have #character-discussion if you'd like to dive into discussing characters and their backstories.
Thank you for the information!
Free Game I DM every Friday and I use discord, Dnd beyond and above VTT all of my players have dropped out I need 5 people who are willing to play. it's a story I made up and it is about to get very interesting with lore and story.
and I am a new DM
You should post in #looking-for-players. The instructions are in #find-a-game.
Hey I work a weird schedule and want to be able to find some games online what would be your advice? i also really want to homebrew races/classes because the kind of races I want to play aren't in DND original. the fighter class feels kind of bland to me. i might be wrong
@velvet jetty me
There's like 200 players for every 1 gm online and they only let the dms post one game once a week so it's pretty hard to find games as a player. I'd advise combing through different dnd subreddit / discords as well as looking for whatever way your vtt of choice advertises games.
If all else fails you can try your hand at gming as well
Check out #looking-for-community
Homebrew stuff will be up to the individual DMs to allow or not.
ok
The closest thing to what I want is Dhampir
But I really just want straight up monstrous demon, not Tiefling.
Good luck with that...
Again, be prepared to lower you expectations. If you find a DM they may not allow such homebrew races (I don't).
Hello, i am a newcomer and want to be a player to a campain. Anyone want to accept me into their party?
Check #find-a-game for instructions on using the recruitment channels.
I think i did it right
I was thinking about making a character for a campaign but how would I know what level I am supposed to make them? or am I supposed to join a campaign then make my character? Sorry im new
New players to D&D would (hopefully) find a game where the DM hosts a low-level adventure, which would typically start at level 1.
I suggest making characters to get used to doing that but be prepared to remake one when you do find a DM.
I will make a couple characters to practice. Thanks for the advice 👍
erm, hi..i'm new
Yes, wielding a shield gives you +2 to your AC.
If your not have profiency in an armor, it doesnt Mean you can't wear it?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArmorandShields - tells you here, but relevant part is
If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.
So you can wear it and get the AC, but you have ^these negatives.
Ahh Nice. Thx🔥
Hello everyone, I’m a new player who’s tryna get into D&D and I’m trying to look for people to play with. Anyone got any advice or a campaign I can in join,Newbie player here.

do i need to copy a wizard spell in my book from a written form of the spell ?
or can i ask someone to teach me the spell so i can write it after understanding it ?
imaagine there's an old powerful wizard that can't write anymore
and he wants to teach me a spell
can i learn it from him showing me the spell directly ?
so i can write it in my spellbook once the training is finished ?
You can copy from his book, as long as you have enough special ink and paper
Hello just joined on the server year long dm looking advice on setting up local dnd league at store
Adventure league?
what if he insists on showing me the spell visually instead of just showing me his book ?
@fresh fable nope just local store sponsored league then adventure league
Rules wise you need the written version, talk to your DM
@fresh fable our game store only one in 100 miles that is wizards sponsored
oh so i need a written form, okay
@fresh fable i am the dm
#adventurers-league might be best place of advise
Thanks
If you’ve met the wizard and they are showing you the spell they would more than likely show you their book too, narratively you could learn it by them telling and showing just make sure you’ve got all the materials you need for copying it.
okay
but now
i have this subclass that allows me to learn and write in my spellbook warlocks spells
but they don't have a book
What subclass?
so the only way for me to copy their spells would be from a scroll
a homebrew subclass
but would the scroll I copy the spell from lose his magic power ?
Yeah you would need spell scrolls
Yes once copied the scroll fades or crumbles or burns up etc
Best advice is work with your DM on what they would allow
also another thing with spell scrolls
wait no
nvm, thanks for your time and explanations
No worries
what does theater of the mind mean?
So my family is about to go on their first quest and in it there are secret doors and they are new so i know they arent even going to try searching for them so should i hint to them that there maybe are secret doors?
It’s a way of playing combat without maps and minis the DM will describe where you are in relation to enemies
I mean depends on wht you mean by secret, if they're behind walls you could say something like some of the walls look more crumbled and decrepit than the others
Yeah its behind walls
Also how will it work? Should i give each player a check to find the secret or only once and if they fail they dont find the secret?
Do any of them have a high passive perception maybe one of them notices a breeze in the room that shouldn’t be there or the doors scuff marks on the floor o
Get them to investigate the room
The highest one is 14 and the dc of the walls are 15
Then investigation checks would be needed to find it
This inspiration point 🧐
I know it can be given by the dm.
But when one use it, do they loose it?
Yes
If you have inspiration, you can expend it when you make an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Inspiration
Yir i saw that. But didnt see If they lost the point after 😜
In this case, the word "expend" means you lose it.
Oh. Thx..
Just the last question.
"To make an ability check, roll a d20 and add the relevant ability modifier. As with other d20 rolls, apply bonuses and penalties, and compare the total to the DC. If the total equals or exceeds the DC, the ability check is a success--the creature overcomes the challenge at hand."
And its the dm Who desides how high the DC is.? 🧐
Yep!
Well, in some cases, yes.
In others, the DC is provided by another feature (like a spell save DC) or even by another creature’s roll (like a grapple attempt).
But when the rules don’t provide one for a specific situation, then yeah, the DM decides.
As a general rule of thumb: 10 for an easy task, 15 for medium, and 20 for hard.
Um, im new to DND, is there a specific class to play thats easy for beginners?
I would prioritize what seems fun to you - you can learn even the more "complex" classes if you're really invested in playing them.
Fighter is the most basic to work with, but in general 5e is pretty easy to work with
okie, tq!
@candid summit is there anything specific you'd like to get into? Any particular gimmick you'd want to fit in
We can try recommend some to narrow it down a little for you
um, id like to play more as a sneaky kind of guy
Rogue? Rogue.
You can get stealth proficiency on every class if you try for it, but rogue lends itself to being the easiest to set up and be very good at sneakiness.
tq! Ill take a look at rouge definitley
Does anyone know where the best place to find a group to play dnd?

If I don't have a full group, and I just want to find a group to play, how do I put it in find a game?
I see there's a looking for dm option but I do not have a group and am only by myself
Late question but if they do a investigation should all of them do one? Or only one player and if they fail you cant discover the secret?
I would do the whole group as 1🧐
@languid scaffold
Hey guys do you think if i have a tiny cat character the dm will find it silly?
a tabaxi?
idk
tabaxi are cat like humanoids
Oh is it a type of race?
Have you made the character sheet?
yep
yes on dndbeyond though
Ok so tabaxi i will have to edit my character then!
What's the race, class and background?
Ok the race is a human(i know its weird i only chose it because its supposed to have human characteristics) Ranger 1 And Noble
i cant find tabaxi on dnd beyond
If by “tiny” you mean the Creature Size, that may be harder to get accepted.
There are no official Tiny races.
so its not like tiny tiny its a normal cat size
You or your DM needs to have the Volos book
oh i got shared a bunch of books from an older dnd player
Yeah, a normal cat is Tiny.
tabaxi are in Monsters of the Multiverse or in Volo's
you can't buy Volo's anymore but you could still access it with campaign sharing
You can get that one here, if you need.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/mordenkainen-presents-monsters-of-the-multiverse
You can get either the full book or just the race by itself.
ok i will be right back and check if i was shared with either
Note that shared character options are only usable for characters in the campaign that’s sharing them.
Anyone got an answer to this 🧐
That's going to depend on the situation
Though if they're all investigating, a group check can work
Hey Im new to this, I'm excited to create a character (actually created two) but I dont know if I did the right thing. I'm still kinda lost with almost everything can I have some advice?
What would you like advice on? Any bits you're not sure about?
the right race to class thing. Im not sure if there is a sort of right mix to it. How to properly set my stats those kinda thing
When it comes to race and class you can do any combo you like, there's no right or wrong. If you are really concerned about getting the best synergy #optimization might be a place to chat, but it can def be a lot to take on as a new player. I'd advice just going with an idea that feels cool to you and sounds fun. Don't worry about best yet.
As for how to put those in, race typically adds +2 to one stat and +1 to another stat. Then add any race features or traits onto the sheet.
Most of your more technical things will come from a class.
I see thanks for that ^_^
Ty dude
went to dndbeyond to get a player version of a map but its the same as the dm version??
which map?
Dwarven Excavation
from DRAGON OF ICESPIRE PEAK
its showing all the secret places? or is that supposed to be there? i though even the players don’t know that there is a secret there
^
Player maps typically just lack the annotations that DM maps have. Player maps still have all the areas, and how you choose to reveal them is up to you.
yeah this map still shows the secret doors unfortunately
ooooh. oof
oof might have to draw it then
There are others online, made by folk. Not sure how many are of a resolution you can use.
yeah was just writing it i found one that doesn’t have the S on it but the areas are still there won't the players be like why they can't go there and if i tell them because its a secret area thats why, then they’ll know its a secret
Yeah always a bit of a meta game with using maps. If you cut it up, or hide with blocks of 'fog of war' or use Dynamic Lighting on VTTs, players might always note 'Huh, looks like the map should go further that way'
VTTs can hide parts of the map and reveal it piece by pieces. If you print maps, you could put paper over the not revealed areas
whats VTTs?
virtual tabletops
But then- it's not too big an issue. After all we do actually want them to find these areas. They still won't know what it is before they get there, but knowing there should be more isn't an issue
Hey I'm new to this and I'm really interested in playing. Idk where to start though

hello im new
hey

i want to play with random people
or play a campain
do you know how to do that?

finding a group with strangers online can be a bit like a job interview sometimes but all these places help you find games
ok
So I’m not sure how to use the look for a dm channel, but I have a group of people that are looking for a DM. Anyone know how to find one?
You can find instructions to use the channels in #find-a-game

New DM looking for Players for campaign
what kind?
It a fantasy campaign
is it light fantasy or dark fantasy?
Going to point you towards #looking-for-players, before a mod comes along and has to use mod voice
Ok
btw can i play lost mine of phandelver after dragon of icespire peak?
Lost Mine of Phandelver is levels 1 to 5
Dragon of Icespire Peak is levels 1 to 7
yea ik and some people play dragon of icespire peak after lost mine of phandelver but my party has already started dragon of icespire peak
It'll take a lot of work to balance if you want to use the same PCs from Icespire since Lost Mine is made for PCs starting at level 1.
damn also for monsters who are blind do they do use disadvantage to hit or dont hit the target at all?
disadvantage to hit. If the player also has used the hide action successfully, then the monster doesnt know where the PC is, so it might not hit at all, or morel likely seek another target
If you look up a tale of two dragons in dmsguild, you will get a conversation someone has already made to run one of those adventures after the other
(this is assuming the monster doesnt have any special sense like blindsight or tremorsense)
I rolled for my abilities scores do you think a DM would let me take 2 point from one score and put it in another
They would probably ask you to reroll in front of them.
Probably not. But for rolled stats DMs are likely to make your roll again anyway
@unique frigate
Okay so what class did you pick in the end?
class? illrigger
... A what?
tried posting a link
@outer crest send me them privately if you want
sent
You're a newcomer and they gave you a homebrew class to use?
Alright, we'll work with it. First of all you're proficient in Constitution and Charisma saving throws
tbf they didn't know what it was either. it was just an option
Illriger is well written, so long as you work with your DM during character creation it shouldnt be any harder than an official class to pick up
Which means you add +2 to both saving throws when you make them
Fair enough. This is the first time I hear of it so I wasn't sure
Its one of Matt Colville's 3rd party homebrews, his site MCDM has some great stuff if you're interested by what you've seen of it
@outer crest anyway, so on the little circle thing on each saving throw, you need to tick or shade in or otherwise do something to indicate you are proficient in Charisma and Constitution saves
You're still proficient, and you still add +2
okay thanks
But you do add your modifier in that ability score to your saving throw
So if your Constitution is a - 1, instead of +2, it's a +1
If it was +3, then it would be a +5
yeah i found that out
what about skills? am i supposed to choose two from arcana, athletics, deception, insight, intimidation, investigation, persuasion, and religion?
Well first of all have you picked a background yet?
no?
If so, I'd wait, because your background gives you skills as well
And you don't choose your skills from a background, you just get them, so if you get Athletics from your background for example, you know you don't have to pick it for your class
Also, at this point I want to ask, did your DM say its okay to make the character alone?
You're clearly fairly new and usually especially a first character tends to be a one-to-one with player and DM, but if you're allowed make your character alone, I'm perfectly fine to help
not specifically but they did say to just let them run by it once i'm done to check things. busy right now so i went here
That's fine so
Do you have any specific character idea then to base a background on?
okay hold on
the character is kind of bloodthirsty. constantly seeking the "thrill of combat". the working with the demon god you mentioned to enhance abilities and as an excuse to go out and hurt people. working for the devil god but not truly loyal to it
dm added things. was slightly taken apart and put back together again as punishment for failing too often. some limbs were replaced with prosthetics. along with that dm said to set the race as warforged because of this. acknowledging that the character isn't more mechanical than biological. also the character spent some time in a prison camp; dm's only requirement in a character
@unique frigate
Okay... Um... Would Knight be a safe bet then?
Your character is a knightly figure correct? Ish
i think it's more cultlike. dm mentioned something about trying to replace the current gods with the god of death
Okay then maybe Acolyte
Or since you've been basically torn apart, Haunted could work?
can you tell me more about these i have never heard of them
Acolyte is just clear cut "you were a devoted servant of a god". You more than likely lived or worked in a church or temple, studied religious scripture and stayed with members of your own cloister
Haunted just means that you are traumatised by an event in your past that continued to live in your memories, whatever that trauma may be. Or you're literally haunted by a ghost or something, but that's less used.
i'll have to think about it. haunted sounds interesting
I'd suggest looking at the two mechanically as well if that might help. I can't send links in this server because... Well I don't think anyone can, but a quick Google search will help you find the background on DNDBeyond or something if you don't have the PHB already with you.
yeah i will eventually. i can move onto something other than skills if necessary while i think about it
Well the only other basic things I can think of are equipment really, which shouldn't be fairly difficult to do on your own, just look at the classes equipment choices and you should be fine, but let me know if you have any problems
But just for ease, when noting down weapons, your attack roll modifier is your strength modifier+proficiency bonus(+2) and your damage is the die specified on the weapon+your Strength modifier if the weapon is melee
If the weapon is ranged, it's the same, but Dexterity instead of strength
okay. i want to be sure the right "haunted" background is the one i'm looking at. can you send me the link privately
Alright
You can definitely send links.
Oh wow!
A whole new world has opened up to me!
Also, wait so I can send links, but I can't send screenshots of my homebrew in #homebrew?
@outer crest
Links are generally allowed, as long as they follow the server rules. (New members aren't able to share links for a short while.)
Images are only allowed in a few specific channels.

im completly new
There's some handy links there to get you started. ☝🏻
Homebrew ain't one of them?
i saw it. i think the being torn apart and put back together would work. but i don't really feel it should be something the character tries to bury or hide from others. would this change anything?
It is not. If an image is your only option, you could upload it to another site like imgur and share the link.
Not really, I'd say most people would allow it. The main thing I think is the trauma involved
alright. where do i put this?
There's a section that says background in it close to the top right
Put in Haunted One
how do i get started with a group
Same question
And then do the same thing you did with the saving throws and put it on the skills you chose for the background
?looking
#find-a-game has everything you need to start your search, including:
• Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
• Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
• Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
i just answered all the questions so how does it work now
@outer crest Then you choose 2 languages to speak in out of the following:
Abyssal: languages of demons
Celestial: language of angels
Deep Speech: language of... Weird cthulu alien thingies basically
Draconic: Language of dragons
Infernal: language of devils
Primordial: language of elementals
Sylvan: language of fey
Undercommon: language of dudes who live in this harsh hellish underground place
still trying to figure out where to put the background
I don't know... Whenever anyone else does it, they usually just get a "cool, thanks" and it's over... I don't actually know what comes next...
i mean like will i get a dm with a Dm or something or like im confused lol
Anyone interested in your post will either respond in the thread attached to it or send you a direct message.
It should be at the top right of the page. You have class and level, background, player name, etc.
ah okay thanks
pm
@outer crest is that DNDBeyond because if it is I actually have no idea at that stage
I thought it was a physical page
Oh okay, yeah, I don't know how to help you there honestly. I'd say just keep a mental note of it, and just keep going
ookay
It's not terribly important to note it down on the sheet, as long as you're aware that's what the background is
do you all know how long it normally takes to get a group
Do note down the skills, languages, tools, equipment, etc. though
It can take no time at all, or forever, really depends
😮 hope im the first
okay. should i put the things i get from that background in
Yeah. Just the ones you picked though
yes
Like you don't have to put down that you could choose deep speech if you don't want to pick it
To make it easier, don't worry about the personality traits, ideals, flaws, etc. If you don't want to either
Some tables bother with them, some don't, I'd talk to your DM about that specifically when you can
Everything else, you're fine
okay. what about the horror trinkets? i can look for one that i might like but i don't see any section i can put it
It's part of equipment
okay
wait how old do you have to be to play DND
My daughter was 4 when she started.
Most people in this server will be 18 or older I'd say
damn
wait ur a DM?
But I've seen plenty of school dnd groups
Well... Not plenty... One per school ish?
Yeah
u looking for a new player?
I don't play online, sorry
Start one!
There’s some club resources your teachers can use here:
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/educators
@unique frigate so i've done that. what do i put for the skills now?
Depends a lot on the area. For example I live in Ireland, where dnd is getting a lot of word of mouth, but very few people are actually playing it, and most people say "I've always been interested, but didn't bother looking into it"
Well if you put down the ones you chose from your Background, then you just have to do the same with the class skills
alright. what do i set for speed?
Whatever is set on your race. 30ft more than likely
I think you said Warforged which I'm pretty sure is 30ft
some limbs were replaced with prosthetics.
dm said to set the race as warforged because of this. acknowledging that the character isn't more mechanical than biological.
hit point maximum?
Yeah so 30ft speed
That's determined by your class. I'd say probably 10+constitution modifier but I'll check
Yeah it's 10+Con so 9 for you
No, it's 10-1 so 9 total
None, that mainly comes from spells
okay
Also, I just want to check, did you add your warforged ability score bonuses?
Or any other racial ability score bonuses
i don't think so
Okay well then that means that your Constitution increases by 2, which means it's set to 10 now
And your maximum hit points is 10 now instead of 9
And you can increase another ability score by 1
pm
Okay yeah that's perfect
okay
Now it's just a matter of putting in your other racial and class features really and I think you're done
hit dice?
There should be a section where you can just write (or copy and paste) those in
Oh right, sorry, 1d10
As long as you can get it to show as d10, you're fine
there's no d. just a chosen number
i found out how to set it to d10. but i don't know what that chosen number is for now
i'll deal with it later. death saves? @unique frigate
That's just for when you go up in level, for now it's just 1
okay
That's just to keep track of your progress in... Well... Dying once you reach 0HP. Not to worry about yet, you'll encounter it during play
oksy]
characteristics?
i have the "I live for the thrill of the hunt" from haunted but that's it
I would leave that for your DM and you to talk about, because some DMs might not necessarily need you to fill that part out as they don't really add anything mechanically, they're more guidelines for you to use while role-playing
okay
But if you want to do it for yourself personally, go ahead
There's a few guidelines in the background entry, and you can kind of make your own inspired by the ones that are there if the ones that are don't exactly fit the vibe you're going for
okay. what about class resource?
Class resource?
i think it has something to do with short rest?
Oh, okay I see it on the sheet there
I think that's just a place for you to put sorcery points or lay on hands HP or something, if you want to. That section isn't necessary, especially since I don't really think your class really has any specific expendable resources
okay then. other resource doesn't matter either then?
No
okay. what about attacks and spellcasing
Spellcasting is 2nd level, so don't worry about that just yet
Attacks is where you put the weapons that you decided to put in your equipment
this seems complicated. i'll start with longsword. i need to set ability+ a number. there's also a checkbox for proficient
You are proficient
I don't know about an extra number... I assume that's for if its magic so... 0?
And the ability is strength
yes. range?
Um... Okay. Really it makes you set the range?
yes it does
Well it's a melee weapon so, 5 feet
magic bonus and crit range?
Crit range? What edition is this?! 😂😂
i have no idea
Magic bonus is 0 and crit range is just 20
okay
There are some classes that let you crit on other numbers, but the default is always 20
damage. a die+an ability+a number
1d8+strength+0
type and crit die
"Crit: example die"
And type is... Slashing I'm pretty sure
the next two are optional. damage2 and saving throw
Okay yeah it's Slashing
Yeah that's for magical effects, leave them
last ones are save effect and description
Leave them too
okay. next is rapier
Okay, odd choice but cool
It's basically the same as before but with Piercing this time
👍
okay there's that
features and traits? leave that for when i can speak with the dm again?
Those are for your class and racial features
You can copy and paste them on, or type them out in a more simplified manner or... Whatever really
where do i find them for racial

Okay, now that the rest seems to be dealt with, there is one thing I want to address. So your class seems to be like a battlefield commander/paladin type of build which means that your main ability scores should be Strength, Constitution and, (mainly as you start casting spells) Charisma
While there's nothing wrong with what you've done so far, and you are free to ignore me, I might recommend that you take some out of Intelligence and put them into either Charisma or constitution
And if you do change your Constitution, be sure to change your hit point maximum (it's 10+your Constitution modifier). Everything else should adjust itself as it changes
yep. i'll do that
Great! Now just let me know if there's anything else before I call it a night, otherwise, good luck in your game, and don't worry, once you've made your first character, the next one will always be 100 times faster
there's one last part. money. i might have to talk to the dm about it but i'd like to know what you think
Um... That should be part of Haunted one. Let me check
Oh... Okay... 1sp... Well that's not great 😂😂
But yeah, that's what you have apparently
¯_(ツ)_/¯
So yeah there should be a section with all the currency, go to SP (silver pieces), and you have 1
yeah i did that. i also noticed the equipment section. do i have to add all of those?
Do
Most of the time, it won't be too important. The main equipment you use will be the equipment you get from your class (ie. Weapons, armor, religious symbols, etc.), but it's good to keep a note just in case
yeah yeah
that should be it besides bio and info, and a confusing tab called attributes and abilities but i just can't understand it
You should be fine, I'd say that's everything
Actually, did you adjust your AC with the armor you're carrying?
right forgot about that part
"Abilities" are your six stats, like Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, etc.
what would the ac of leather armor be?
11 + Dex Mod
So yeah it's quite simple, if it's a leather armor it's 11+your Dexterity modifier, if you chose a chainshirt it's a 13+dexterity modifier(2 Max) and if you're using a shield, it's always +2 no matter what you're wearing
i also get a longbow, some arrows, and some javelins. do i add attacks for those as well?
In your case, assuming you still have a 12 in Dexterity, 12
Yes
Yes
Keep note of their ranges
okay can you help me with this. same format as before.
attack: set ability+ a number. checkbox for proficient. range. magic bonus. crit range.
damage: a die+ set ability + a number. type. crit die
You'll notice there are two numbers in the ranges.
A longbow, for example has a range of 150/600
These numbers are in feet.
The first number is "normal range" (150')
The second number is "long range" (600')
When you make an attack within normal range, you roll as normal.
For long range, (151'-600' in the case of a longbow), you make the attack at disadvantage.
Past the max range, you simply can't hit, the weapon has a max range.
You're proficient in both, strength for javelin, Dexterity for Longbow, +0 for the extra numbers, crit range is always going to be 20, Javelin is 1d6 for damage and crit die, Longbow is 1d8.
type?
P for Piercing
both?
Yes
range for javelin?
Also keep in mind that a javelin can be used to make melee attacks
That's... More complicated
30/120 (if used to make a ranged attack)
It's a melee weapon, but it can be thrown
melee range then?
20/60, it's thrown
I'm reading it straight out of the PHB, range for a javelin is 30/120
Yes but keep a note that it has the thrown property
Oh right it does
?,?
Sorry I don't know what I was reading instead
Find it right here" https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#SimpleMeleeWeapons
There are some weapons which are classified as melee weapons, but have the thrown property, which allows you to make a ranged attack with them by throwing them
i was asking for the melee range
Thrown means it can be used as a ranged weapon, but unlike most ranged weapons, they can still use your Strength modifier instead of Dexterity as usual for ranged weapons... Apparently
Melee range is 5 feet
okay
melee range is always 5 feet unless stated otherwise
Yeah, melee range is always 5' unless some other special property allows you to hit beyond that
Yes, the simple default is:
Melee weapons use Strength
Ranged weapons use Dexterity
(unless some special property allows something else)
Not that I'm aware of
Hey everyone! I just finished up my campaign and am looking to start a fresh one, I’m available whenever, Australian Eastern Standard Time (GMT+10), I’m fairly new but not completely useless, PM if you have a spot free 😁
👍 👍 thanks
You're welcome
Hi everybody, they say ya can't teach an old dog new tricks so I'm here to prove that wrong. I'm an older fella but I'm very keen to learn more and eventually find some folks to play with. Any tips are welcome. New Zealand time zone here.
Less if you read the (free) Basic Rules first.

It took me about 2-3 months to teach my newbies PF2e, considering 5e is easier, probably less
I'm a newbie aswell in 5e
Only thing I can help you with is telling you how to make them learn the rules
2-3 months? how often did you play? that seems like a long time TBH.
Typically if your playing weekly, if you actively try and hit every rule/scenario maybe 2-3 sessions, and then the more niche rules will still catch people unawares at times.
And sincerely the best tip here is, not just telling them what to do, and actively explain why you are putting them to do that, it took my guys a while to understand AC and DC, but after all they managed it.
Also making them read their characters is a gold mine. My guys used to read and make sinergies up to level 20 when they are bored so they know the ins and outs of their characters, especially if they are hard to learn.
And making them read the basic rules piece by piece is easy enough.
Exactly what I wanted to say
We started in march
But took a long payse between march and may when we restarted playing, I have no ideea how, but even the guy that had no ideea about PF at all, managed to learn the basics in 2-3 days. Either I am the best teacher ever, or he just read them Xd
And also, DnD and other PnP rpg's aren't made to be rule cluttered like 40k or other wargames. Simple, easy to follow rules that you just have to read
Any advice for a fighter with an eldritch knight archetype? On one side, he's a fighter so STR should be his top but on the other side, casting ability is on INT. Yet constitution is as well important.
Sorry if this ain't the right place.
I'm a DM so i brewed eldritch knight into using Strength for spell casting
you could try and ask your dm to use that feature, its fairly easy to change
If im reading it correctly psychic blades can only make 1 blade right?
