Counters out into a straight roll.
Disadvantage means you roll two d20s and keep the lower one.
Sometimes a special ability or spell tells you that you have advantage or disadvantage on an ability check, a saving throw, or an attack roll. When that happens, you roll a second d20 when you make the roll. Use the higher of the two rolls if you have advantage, and use the lower roll if you have disadvantage. For example, if you have disadvantage and roll a 17 and a 5, you use the 5. If you instead have advantage and roll those numbers, you use the 17.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AdvantageandDisadvantage
And for this specific scenario:
If circumstances cause a roll to have both advantage and disadvantage, you are considered to have neither of them, and you roll one d20.
Hey I’m new to D&D and I was hoping of anyone is having game for newbies to gain more experience
Look through the #looking-for-players listings!
even if the games you see in LFG threads don't say they're newbie friendly, most open tables in my experience are open to teaching so don't feel afraid to ask
just be transparent about your experience 👍
Can I ask what a one shot is? Lol
A one-shot is an adventure that is started and finished in the same sitting, they usually take 3-6 hours
Thank you
I’m going to be playing a monk for the first time. If anyone has any advice on how to build his character, or has experience playing one, please any help would be greatly appreciated.
After choosing a background for your character, you can choose a few personality traits, ideals, bonds and flaws from the tables to flesh out the character
Usually hermit or acolyte a pretty good choices, but you can do anything really
Thank you!
What kind of stats should I spec into?
The quick build advice in the monk creation rules sums it up pretty well:
You can make a monk quickly by following these suggestions. First, make Dexterity your highest ability score, followed by Wisdom. Second, choose the hermit background.

Hey I really wanted to start playing D&D ,I have only heard about before
I'm kinda in the same boat, trying to make my first character and boy howdy it is quite a lot lol
Yeah it takes some time to learn
First time was confronting and wasn't too sure about how everything worked
I mostly just gotta find a group lol
Hi! I’m new and I’m looking for a online campaign group since I don’t have a lot of friends that play

Is there a "best place" to buy the textbooks for DnD? Digital or Physical? Somewhere that's like Fantasy Grounds (or is Fantasy Grounds a good investment?) I'm as new as new can get but I adore the world's and everything within them- so it'd be nice to slow collect. I'd just like to know where's best!
I usually spot them at comic shops, a warning they are pricy, 50$ a piece usually.
Digital, I know DNDBeyond sells them, also same price
slow collecting is mentioned cause boi oh boi they do be thicc in price
Yea lol
Though, if you are near a local library they MIGHt have some? I dunno how they handle stuff with Tabletop games but its worth a shot if you want to go through one before buying
I will look into it- I have a hobby shop that has them- sadly they only run Magic and no DnD games there- but I still frequent the shop cause I'm a dice gremlin
Thanks for your input tho
Also- would you suggest 1 on 1s for first timers? I find I get really choked up and lost in a crowd of 5 and I'm really wanting to give a corporeal form to all the beauties (and uglies) in my head & heart
I'm a bit upset because I found a tabletop store that does games, and they had a newcomers DND event literally the week BEFORE I found it
I would recommend at least one other player. You, the DM, and 1-3 other players
Someone else said the same- it's intimate doing 1 on 1 and I'd be lost and all awkward and stuff haha
I'm definitely the type that needs an "anchor" character in the mix. I am not the solo adventurer that lands in a party type
So awkward finding people- adult friend finding is bizarre
Hey Im completely knew to dnd, i need help with chosing a class and race
Sure, have any specific character tropes or concepts you'd find interesting to play?
I typically get my D&D books from Amazon where they're $10-25 cheaper than elsewhere
which part of dnd are you most interested in? roleplay, combat, or some other more specific thing?
im playing it online with some school friends
but i would say mostly combat but some roleplay too?
what parts of the game are there?
those are the two biggest ones that are usually in every campaign. I can't think of the others off the top of my head
The three pillars of 5e are combat, social and exploration
Certainly an interesting way to start building a character
mainly combat and a bit roleplay
When I need inspiration for build a new character I generally start off with a character I enjoy from a book, movie or series and add a unique twist onto them
Do you have any characters that you enjoy the idea of playing as?
yea thats the problem.... i have no clue on anything so idk much about them
It might serve you well to think of a play style that you enjoy.
Do you play many fantasy RPG video games? If so, do you have a certain type of character that you generally lean toward, such as a thief, wizard, fighter etc.?
As it turns out, all those kinds of characters in video games are really based on D&D!
The term "role playing game" was invented to describe what D&D is.
generally mage/wizard types
but im also fine with fighters
mmorpgs i play like albion online
I’m a fan of the Mass Effect series and made a biotic. Picked custom lineage, telekinetic feat, and made a graviturgist wizard. Have a lot of fun with them during combat.
Overall it’s good to decide on a concept or play style and use the already established rules to make a character you’ll enjoy.
Between the mage-y classes there's the Wizard, who learns their magic by researching; Warlock, who gets their magic by making a deal with an extraplanar entity; Sorcerer, who is born with flexible magic inherently; and the Bard, who creates magic from their artistic performances
Do any of these sound like something you'd enjoy?
Sourcerer, yes
ive heard half elf is good with sorcerer?
For people who are mostly into the roleplay of the game, I would recommend starting by making the character's personality traits and stuff first. Choose personality traits you would like roleplaying as, and ones you find interesting that you think could add to or work with the themes of the game your DM plans on running (ask your DM what themes will be present in the campaign (themes in this context means stuff like horror, politics, mystery, etc.)). Once you have the character part of the character all built, let that decide what class and background would work well with a character like that.
For people who are mostly into the combat, I would recommend first thinking about what part of combat seems the most interesting to you. Do you like thinking on your toes and coming up with different solutions to different problems? If so then I would recommend choosing a class and subclass that gives you a good amount of options for things to do in combat, but also try to avoid having too many options.
As a new player it might be a lot of work to memorize all the different spells your character has, and if worrying about if you picked the best spells or not isn't something you want to do, then I would recommend checking out Paladin or Eldritch Knight Fighter or Arcane Archer Fighter. They use spells but they are still good at martial combat. If you don't care about spells, but would still like a little magic, I recommend checking out stuff like Echo Knight Fighter and Psi Warrior Fighter or Rune Knight or Ancestral Guardian Barbarian or Storm Herald Barbarian or Totem Warrior Barbarian or Wild Magic Barbarian
Yeah that can work out well, really you can play any race with any class effectively so don't feel constrained
Where do you imagine your character's inherent magical talent stems from? The most common two are a connection to the randomness of Wild Magic, or having a relation to an ancient dragon
ancient dragon
i think mystery, adventure ive heard they're making a taiga type biome, with an ocean nearby
do i choose a race or class first?
you don't need to choose them in any order
you can build the aspects of your character in whatever order you want
For the first time it's probably easiest to follow the order in the Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
If you use the rules like a checklist, doing one after the other it can make the process easier
oh theres a lot in there alright
yeah, a 5e character is pretty complex so it can take a bit to get used to
but it you are mostly interested in combat mechanics, your class will determine most of the stuff you can do in combat, so that would probably be better for you to start with.

The link up there for handbooker helper is pretty great if you learn better with a video rather than reading
im new to DND and this might be a dumb question, but its been on my mind: Does this game assume that other adventurers dont exist unless they come accross one another? example given: multiple groups go on the same campaign and the same dragon keeps getting killed. or like if theres like millions of adventurers that do magic, then NPC's wouldnt be that impressed
D&D isn't (typically*) an open world like a MMO but often just deals with one group.
*The exception to this are Westmarch servers which has multiple DMs running a "live" campaign world.
Every table of D&D exists within it's own parallel multiverse
(with a few exceptions that are easiest left unexplained)
Oh ok, so I take it that the D&D lore would serve as the basic "template" for each parallel multiverse
Lore is what each DM makes of it at their individual table.
Okay, I think Im getting it. Thanks so much Deez and OldMan!
Hello, I am totally new to D&D but I am keen to get involved. I bought my grandson the Dragons of Stormwreck isles starter set but we are yet to play it as the rules need some learning. Is there any advice that can help me in starting this new hobby as I don't want to go down the wrong rabbit hole. Thanks in advance

Well reading the rules is a good first step. I'd also suggest watching some videos of folks playing - I don't know the age of your grandson so picking appropriate videos/streams might be a bit challenging as many of them would be, at best, PG-13 rated. The Critical Roll folks have a great Handbook Helper series which breaks the rules down into nice bite-size videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
Thanks (he is 13)
Well as a heads-up many of the shows/streams can be pretty salty in language and some may touch on adult subjects. So please do your homework! Also keep in mind that many D&D shows/streams are more entertainment than "how to play".
Thanks for the tip
I can recommend Dungeon Dudes Dungeons of Drakkenheim. The language is generally clean and the worst topic they deal with is more like cosmic horror.
You can also play pretty loosely with the rules at first. Think of it a bit like a boardgame- someone at the start can read the rules and explain the general premise (So we tell a story, with the Dm controlling the world and the players controlling the heroes, but when it comes to things the heroes might fail at we roll dice to see what happens) but if you tried reading all the rules it'd be overwhelming quick and it's easier to play and let rules click in place as you play.
And if you get things wrong- doesn't matter! Either look up the rule and use it next time or just play how you like. Making a character and Combat rules are probably the only ones you'd need to really read up on, everything else can be ab libbed or checked up when you need them.
Hey guys, so I've been thinking, looking for a game as an absolute beginner would be hard. So why don't we gather a group of 3-4 people and then look for a DM who's willing to do a campaign with us? I'm in GMT+7, anyone interested?
Hi there EddieV! We ask that you use the #looking-for channels or private direct message when trying to put together a game/group. See #find-a-game for more info.
My bad. Thank you
I'd also say it can be slightly harder finding a DM as a group, and by that point, if you've already made a group, one of you could DM.
Hello! I'm not sure whether or not I should post this message here or in the DM discussion channel but I've been meaning to start learning how to DM so I could organize a campaign with my friends :)
Nice! Check out the useful resources in the pinned message here in this channel (or type ?new and submit and the bot will post it for you in this channel).
If you're new to D&D this is the place to ask basic questions without getting steamrolled by other D&D conversations that may be happening in other channels. That said, do check out the many channels here and as always, use the most appropriate channel for the topic of discussion.
And here's how to see all the channels: id:browse
Thank you! Ill definitely check out those resources.
hey guys! i’m new to dnd, i actually know nothing about it T-T. but i’m interested in playing because there’s a dnd club at my school. can anyone help me start?
Hi! I'm quite new here and there is a d&d event tommorow and I am completely lost as to where to start. If anyone could give me some pointers as to some basic rules?

I've been playing for a few months now and got recommended to this server by a friend, but I'm still a bit fuzzy on the finer details of the game. Mostly because my local club can get a bit chaotic, lol. Mostly looking for a group that both won't mind explaining things, but won't have to get sidetracked with the basics as well.
You could put a post on the #750812887697588356 channel. Or message dms privately who have listing on #looking-for-players You could also look on dnd beyond's forums, roll20, or r/lfg on reddit

I have the dnd beyond app but idk if that helps
See #find-a-game for how to use the server's recruitment channels. Read the instructions carefully.
Okay thank you
For fun could if I used unseen servant would I be able to see what they look like?
Check with your DM since that'd be going against the spell's explicit details of it being invisible.

Hello people I´m new to the channel and to DnD in general. I´m looking for a group to join. Where do I look or who should I ask around here?
#looking-for-players is a great space to look for a party!
thats the point its a read only channel
is there a place to ask about character creation? this is my first time not using a premade character lol
Hello, hello 🤗 I am Mine.
I am suuuuuper interested in DnD, having seen a few Pen and Paper campaigns (which is as far as I understand the same but different rules and settings...) I really want to play, but also am super interested in being the DM and writing a story and world!
Sooo... I need help on where to start playing, and how much I have to know about this stuff ^^'
Check #find-a-game for instructions.
Depends on the question! If you're wondering about the rules for character creation, you can ask here or in #dnd-rules. If you want help specific to your character, the folks in #character-discussion can lend a hand.

Yes! Thank you ❤️
Thx (I dont want to asume you gender) for all the help
ty!
So I am newer to DnD as a whole and would like to get in a game where combat is not super necessary and that has no real storyline so I and other players can just kinda screw around and do cool stuff. Is that a thing that happens here?
We don't play games on the server if that's what you're asking. As far as what can happen in D&D, anything can provided the table (and the rules the table agrees to) is cool with it.
You can browse through #looking-for-players to see if there's any games like that currently on offer.
aight
ok!
got it!
so for languages kenku get common and auran so you can fill that in at "other proficiencies and languages"
make sure to not make it to big since its a pretty small box
ok
as a criminal you get proficiency in stealth and deception
do you see the list of skills?
yes
you see the circle nex to them?
mhm
fill in the circle for stealth and deception
ok got it
ok back to other proficiencies and languages
as a criminal you have proficiency in one type of gaming set and in thieves' tools
so the gaming sets you can choose from are
dice set or playing card set
so fill in thieves' tools and then your pick from dice or playing cards
I'm new and want to play with some of my friends that never played dnd before. Whats a good VTT I could use?
well roll 20 is one of the most popular i believe
you got it?
Thanks, Also what classes should they have like for example, Paliden, wizard, ect
if theyre a beginner id say they should start simple like a non spellcaster
alright, so no magic users?
yea
well not necessarily but theyre hard to play and will probably sap up a lot of playtime tryign to understand
alr
so as a criminal you get some items
so under equipment you get
a crowbar
a set of dark common clothes including a hood
a belt pouch containing 15 gp(gold pieces)
I’ve gotten familiarized with character building and soaked in as much guide info. I believe I’m ready to find a dm. I’ve gotten 2 other friends familiarized with character building. We are all noobs/new. Can’t speak for them if the read up on the guides. But how would I go it trying to find a DM?
#looking-for-players chat is for dms looking for players to play with so you can join a campaign from there
got it!
or you can put a post in looking for a dm
and theres some optional stuff you cando like choosing your speciality
if youre a criminal youre probably doing 1 kind of criminal activity
theres some suggestions in the book
like blackmailer burglar enforcer fence highway robber hired killer pickocket and smuggler
you dont have to do this or you can choose something else
could i choose robber?
where would i put it?
well its more of a backstory thing
ah ok
ok
yea?
ok as a rogue you are proficient in dexterity and intelligence saving throws
so fill in the little circle
got it!!
further you get to pick some more skills
well lets start with the stuff youve got automatically
under other proficiencies and languages
you are proficient in simple weapons
light armor
and additionally hand crossbows, rapiers, shortswords and longswords
so you know how to use these weapons properly and whatnot
ok! got it!
now you get to make some choices
you get to choose 4 skills from
acrobatics, athletics, deception, insight, intimidation, investigation, perception, performance, persuasion, sleight of hand and stealth
you cannot pick something you are already proficient in
ok!
so pick four of those and fill in the appropriate circle thingie
got it!
if you need clarification on what they would be used for just ask
i think i got it
good stuff
now you get some more equipment
first you get to choose between a rapier or a shortsword
which would you like
and then you write it down under the equipment thing
ok
then you get to choose between a shortbow and a quiver of 20 arrows
or ... another shortsword
ok
then you may choose between 3 things
a burglars pack
a dungeoneers pack
an explorers pack
pick 1
chose one
got it
now you can make some more choices
you may choose 2 skills to gain expertise in
thats basically proficiency but better
so choose 2 skills in which you are proficient
you are now an expert in those
you may also choose to become an expert in thieves' tools
though you choose one less skill of course
the way you signal expertise is putting a circle around the circle
like a small circle
got it
ok good
you also learn another language named thieves' cant
basically a secret code like language thats used by thieves, scoundrels and the like
you also get a bunch of features from being a kenku
you get to pick 2 more proficiencies
man you get a lot of them damn
you get to pick out of all of them
so pick 2 in which you arent proficient yet
got it
and then you have a bunch of other skills that you may write down under features and traits
or you may write them down under additional features and traits if you wish
ok
or you can just not write them down if thats your thing
ill write it down
but from rogue you get sneak attack
ok
Sneak Attack
Beginning at 1st level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe's distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon.
You don't need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn't incapacitated, and you don't have disadvantage on the attack roll.
The amount of the extra damage increases as you gain levels in this class, as shown in the Sneak Attack column of the Rogue table.
just write down the mechanics btw dont write down the flavor text
ok
cause the further you level the more features youre gonna get and if youre writing down all the extra text youre gonna run out of space
got it
cool and from kenku you also get a bunch of stuff
like what
im looking it up lol
ok lol
Expert Duplication. When you copy writing or craftwork produced by yourself or someone else, you have advantage on any ability checks you make to produce an exact duplicate.
Kenku Recall.
when you make an ability check using any skill in which you have proficiency, you can give yourself advantage on the check before rolling the d20. You can give yourself advantage in this way a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Mimicry. You can accurately mimic sounds you have heard, including voices. A creature that hears the sounds you make can tell they are imitations only with a successful Wisdom (Insight) check against a DC of 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier.
I am new I brought stater kit and player handbook
brb!
np
I’m sorta new to the game and started playing with some friends I kinda get how the game works but before we start a campaign we’re running some one shots I was just looking for some experienced players who could help me get one or write one for me
Check DMsGuild! There’s also a bunch on Winghorn Press’s website.
Ok Thank you
Also, not all of these are one-shots but a few are: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/dungeon-masters-only/43718-list-of-free-dnd-campaigns
back!
cool
well
i guess you should look at peronality traits, ideals, bonds and flaws
and try to fill those in a lil bit
Maybe take the conversation to private messages?
ok!
huh alright
Okay, do you want help with anything?
I'm new. I'm writing something I'm unlikely to ever use, but still I had a question. Do we capitalise Orc, Orcish, Dwarf, Dwarven, Elf, Elven?
I can't recall ever having capitalised the word "Human"...
Then again, I'm not a native speaker.
In fact, as I've been writing some character and world lore, that I'm unlikely to ever actually use, I've capitalised all races except for when I refer to humans, as capitalising the word human feels unnatural to me.
Official books published by WoTC do not capitalize the names of races.
Just like you wouldn't capitalize "human," "elephant," or "cat"
can a Warlock change eldritch invocations ?
yes, ever time you level up, you can change one of the invocations you know for a different one
hey I'm new to DnD as a whole, I've watched a decent amount of stuff so far and have the general basics down I believe, but have no-one to play with, or a group at all for that matter. I have my character made and everything already, I just need to know where to go to find a group to play with if possible. Thx!

gotcha, ty
Is there a specific channel where we can chat about our characters' lore and development?
#tales-from-the-table or even #character-discussion might be good ones!
OHH thank you! I don't know why I couldn't see that channel until now.
How do I transform the Fighter Folk Hero here from Human to Dragonborn? https://media.wizards.com/downloads/dnd/StarterSet_Characters.pdf
do i just -1 str -1 dex -1 con -1 int -1 wis -1 cha
then +2 str +1 cha and add breathe weapon, damage res., language, etc?
Sounds about right.
for 5 by 30 ft. line for black dragon ancestry breath, is that a rectangle 5 by 30?
It's a line 5 feet wide and 30 feet long, in other words a line six squares long on a battlemap grid.
Is anyone else getting the "you do not have permission to speak" in the looking for dm tab?
You need to use the command in the #1075498333705089084 channel, as described in the #find-a-game instructions.
ah ok thank u
Hi so what is the big difference between Human and variant humans
There is none afaik
It’s just a minor difference
More options and customisation with a variant human
Variant humans get two +1s to distribute, an extra skill proficiency, and a feat. Humans get a +1 to all stats, no feats or extra proficiency.
Oh ok thanks
is there an order that people recommend to read the guides? i’d like to learn all i can know about the game before i start playing it.

Do you own any of the books? (You don't need to. I'm just clarifying.)
I have the players handbook and the monster guide. i’ve been reading the dm one online
If you're a player, you should only concern yourself with the Player's Handbook. The other two are for the Dungeon Master.
Alright, thanks. do you have any other books to read? i don’t really understand the combat system so that’s what i’m really looking for.
Monster Manual is for everyone, its fun to look at all the stuff in it
Eh, so long as you're not metagaming, I guess, but I recommend against it.
I like reading the lore of all the monsters
The other books won't clarify the combat system; the PHB has all the info in that. You might want to supplement your reading by checking out YouTube videos in that case.
alright, thank you for being such a good help.
So I’m creating a simple human fighter how should my stats be divided?
What type of fighter are you doing
Are they strength close combat based? Finesse/archery?
Great weapon
It's up to you. I like what the quick build advice has to say:
QUICK BUILD
You can make a fighter quickly by following these suggestions. First, make Strength or Dexterity your highest ability score, depending on whether you want to focus on melee weapons or on archery (or finesse weapons). Your next-highest score should be Constitution, or Intelligence if you plan to adopt the Eldritch Knight martial archetype. Second, choose the soldier background.
Ok so you want Strength and Con your highest
Yeah close combat
Wisdom 3rd highest. Intellect 4th highest and Charisma least
You using point or standard array
Hmm standard
Strength 15, Con 14, Wisdom 13, Cha 12, Int 10 and Dex 8
Been in the community awhile never been in a campaign can anyone help me with somethings

Games do not occur in this server
That said, there are channels here where people are looking for others to get games going, those games would just occur on some other server or venue
Great thank you @slow jasper I'm just trying to get into DND so that would be great I'll check those out.
Hi, any spell suggestions for a lvl 7 (up to 4th lvl spells) Hexblade Warlock?
Shadow of Moil
Combine iwth Armor of Agathys
Yeah I've heard that's good, the only problem is that I only have 2 spell slots per short rest, would that still be more worth it than other things?
@slow jasper plus they're each an action
idk
Hello, new to this server and DND in general. I was wondering if getting into a game would be difficult for someone who is just starting or should I look up resources before looking for a game here?
how do i decide a race and character that i enjoy..., im completely new im confused what to pick
well armor of agathys lasts an hour so its reasonable that youre able to cast it before combat
Hello
I'm kinda new to dnd, last time I'm played was a very longtime ago and I joined a campaign
I need to create a character, I'm familiar with it but need help to not make mistakes
Especially since I need to create a multiclass character
I already know what I wanna play tho I probably need to choose feats and stuff to make it coherent
If anyone wanna help me, ping me or dm me
Oh, and I wanna play Fighter/Rogue but what kind of idk yet if I want to make it a battlemaster or assassin simply because idk the limits or what I can do and not do
I like melee but I like using a crossbow too so idk if I can be hybrid or need to specialize in melee or distant
And since I'm joining a campaign the DM told me I'm instantly level 10 so
Hi there! I'm going to suggest posting that in #character-discussion as that channel is more specifically for character discussions.
I see, thank you
Hello everyone, I am new to DnD and look forward to learning and growing in the group
This may not be the best advice what I did was google the class i wanted and found a suggestion page of good and better options for everything like race, spells, extra skills etc.
I am new to this Discord. I use to play AD&D e1+THAC00 back in school. looking to get started again.
Hello I've never played dnd how should I learn or find a group to play with?
We have a list of useful links pinned here, but also we have #looking-for-players and if you follow the instructions in #find-a-game you can use #750812887697588356
Hellloo I've been meaning to get into Dungeons & Dragons for a year now but I never had anyone who was interested and I'm quite nervous to play so it was always held back
hi all is there a place for newbie DMs to get advice or step by step guides etc? we're a newbie group and I've volunteered my hand... getting D&D beyond set up as we are going to play remotely. I've popped a campaign together, they've added their character and I've drafted the 1st encounter....any advice for a baby DM?
This is my general advice for new DMs: #dnd-newcomers message
If you have more specific questions, you can ask them here; depending on the nature of them, they may be better fit for #dm-discussion.
You can find folks to play with online through our recruiting channels (see #find-a-game) and other sites online such as Reddit, Roll20, and more.
Always prepare for the unexpected
you aren't kidding - the group did great for our first session though!
That's awesome just remember celebrate both highs and lows though
@slow hare and research your homework always continues between the sessions
we all had an awesome time! I will, but playing really cemented the stuff I'd tried to learn b4 we played. thanks for advice!
@slow hare always feel free reach out anytime
Also don't be afraid to bend things as needed
Hi! How do I find people to play in person?
thanks so much! I appreciate it and yeah I had to a couple of times to keep it moving
Howdy!!
:D
Of course always here
Hi I just joined this server and am relatively new to dnd and am looking on info for getting into a game if anyone can help me, thank you
Hi, i’ve been on the old server, weren’t there channels with different languages to search for games?
I don't believe there was
Nope, the old server was English only.
Oh okay, my bad !
Hello, i had a question about rangers and their pet in combat.
Do you have to direct your pet to attack on each turn and does that take up your action or can i tell it to attack once and it just continue to attack without needing additional commands
You could try checking any local comic stores, card stores, or game/hobby stores. Some of them have gatherings inside the stores and possibly a bulletin board for local groups to advertise
PHB pg93 explains it. Summed up, you can freely move your companion and they will automatically dodge if you give no command. If you want them to attack, you have to use your action. You and your companion cannot both attack on the same turn until you gain second attack.
Thank you
YES! I got some character sheets and a adventure grid for dnd
O zerg profile, nice
Thank lol, first background when i got my pc😄 wish i was any good at SC2 lmao
what are the best spells from all the spell lists ?
because I have a feature that allows me to pick 3 spells from any spell lists and add it to my spellbook
(as a wizard)
but it can't be more than 5th level spells
How do I post in the looking for dm channel
Maybe try #optimization.
pins
Read the instructions in #find-a-game. It tells you the commands and where to use them.
So... I want to start playing, like alot. I have an idea for a character, i want to roleplay and have fun. But i feel like there is alot to it? like spells, weapons, armor, classes, enemies, etc. There is alot and as someone who is new, i dont wanna feel dumb with it.
Ah, yeah. There is a lot to get through. If it helps, I find most groups are pretty gentle with new players - so as long as you're putting in the effort, they're likely to be happy to give you a hand!
If there's genuinely something you're really worried about getting, feel free to drop a specific question. Tons of people are happy to help!
How is the new edition of spelljammer?

Yes sir dungeron master moderater sir 🫡
Carry on and happy adventuring!
i also made my character in hero forge based what i think him to look like
Hi I'm creating my first character... I'm leaning towards making a human paladin. any tips please ?
Sounds fun!
How do you feel about teleportation and gunslinging?
teleportation sounds good but not really thought of gunslinging
Here is a character idea i made for a failed campaign.
Shadar-kai artificer battle smith, here's why.
Shadar-kai get half damage after they teleport which comes as a race bonus action.
Battle smith allows your battle dog to help (free advantage) and reaction of guard (enemy disadvantage)
Artificer gets infusions you get Homunculus and Repeating shot
Repeating shot gives you infinite magic ammo in whatever weapon you put it on including bows
You dont really need homunculus but its great for RP and fighting you find yourself a rifle? infinite rifle, find a shotgun? a hand portable cannon? GATTLING CART? all the same you feel me
I will also remind you we are in the newcomers channel. Artificer is not always on the table ( as it is from a book of optional content), so make sure with your dm before you commit to playing a character like that
Didnt artificer come out on the official? or was it rewritten in Tashas i forget but yeah Dunl's right on that
On the official? It's first printed in Eberron and then reprinted in tashas
Yeah i thought artificer was no longer optional content blocked on DndBeyond either way id recommend tasha's if you like dnd and it comes with so much extra content its worth it
How long does it take for Monodrone to review a post? Sorry I'm used to the old system lol
Review a post for what?
for looking for players i think
yess
I must have done something wrong lol
Yeah I'm having issues with posting as well lol only my issue is that it doesn't let me type in the channel
Would y’all recommend a Dwarf Blood hunter?
I wouldn't recommend a blood hunter until you have talked with your dm. That is a homebrew class made by Matthew Mercer and not official
@pseudo frost my DM is good with anything that’s on DND beyond. I’m more so wondering about class progression.
I’m still really new and a monk is the only character I’ve played.
Blood hunter is baller asf
If youre going into a session knowing youre fighting lots of undead and constructs Ghost Slayer is the best option and works great for a Black Knight Rp
Unfortunately my DM has left us all in the dark as to what our next campaign is going to revolve around, so I’m trying to build a pretty well rounded character. I’m in the process of building a dwarven Blood hunter that is Strength and Wisdom strong.
Your other members are they tanky or more mage
Ones a Paladin, Warlock, and a rogue
If youre really new id stay away from Mutant. In that line-up Lycan would be good because it gives you resistances the same as any other werewolf, you control your shifts, and it can give your Dwarf a more firey attitude if youre going for a ruffian
Also it doesn't restrict any of your blood maledicts, Blood puppet is my level 1 go to
Oh i forgot to mention, Your claws count as Crimson Rite able weapons so if you like Monster Hunter at all you can RP a shape-shifting zenogre
I was debating on blood puppet and Bloated agony at the moment
Both are good choices
I appreciate your input!
Gotta spread the blood hunter's good word thats all lol
Hello
Feelin like I might wanna get the game and read the guidebook front to back... bad idea? (I want to learn to DM)
dms handbook gives you a rough outline
You may end up with information overload load
interesting.
I wouldnt go purely off of the dm handbook
okay.

is this different from the player handbook? I've only really just made 2 or 3 character sheets with my friends' help.
so I haven't really done much of my own prep
players handbook is more based around character building
figured
dms book is all about encounters and that kind of stuff
I would say, for just starting into the hobby the basic rules and the starter adventure Lost Mines of Phandelver (also free on D&D Beyond) is more than enough to get started running the game
gotcha.
The adventure in the newest Starter Set (Dragons of Stormwreck Isle) is also a great starter adventure.
Hello I'm new to this but I've been wanting to play dnd for awhile but don't know how to start?
There are some resources up here! I would check out the guided adventure to help give you an idea of how the game is played!
@pseudo frost thank you
hi
Hello!
i made a character and played my first game yesterday, i was hoping to play an online game w my friend but im unsure how to find a DM. im also very new and inexperienced so yee
The looking for players/looking for DM tab is a good place to start to find a good group.
oki. i was on there and i wasnt sure if im supposed to tyoe my own request bc the tab wont let me do that.
i didnt scroll super far up but i only saw looking for DM. ill keep looking tho :3
#looking-for-players just respond in the thread under each advert
im planning on doing a dnd premade campaign with some people and ill be dming it. any advice?
be prepared for players doing other stuff than you first though of 😛
especially if the players don't know each-other in game, be prepared for them wanting to do their own thing. give them a good reason to want to work together, that works for all the characters (money might work for a rogue but maybe not for a pally or druid, etc)
ty!
Have been trying to find a party through this server for almost a year and a half now but haven't been able to find one, do I just keep putting up ads or what? what do I do?
Gotta be active! Look for oneshots, Adventure League, campaigns that seem interesting and PM the Dms. Just posting an 'add' in looking for DM and waiting is not going to get as many results.
Online D&D is a little like speed dating. You need to chat to a few people, be active, go on 'dates' (Oneshots and low commitment games like Adventure League or westmarches where it's easier to drop in and out), and see who you get along with. Ghosting and bad match ups might happen but you keep at it.
Stay in contact with folk you do get along with, and then slowly network- they'll invite their friends, or you along to other groups, and slowly you'll form a stable group you get along with.
if i was in a one-shot and needed to leave for 15 to 20 min in between what should i do?
if at all possible I would use an in game reason why your character is not currently there. otherwise extended bio-break for everyone?
thanks
it would depend on when you needed to leave, if it's about half way into the session a bio break would be fine and probably welcome, it it's after 30 minutes of playing I'd try the in-game reason thing. you could also aks the dm or fellow player to take over your character for that short time period if needed
any1 doing a campaign me and a friend wanna join but we new and dont know much

The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.
• #750812887697588356 has players who are ready to join a game.
• #looking-for-players has unpaid DMs offering a traditional D&D experience: a single party playing together through a shared adventure.
• #looking-for-community has free community-style games like West Marches, One-Shot locators, and more. These are easy to join and regularly active, but you might play with different people each session.
• #paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. These games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation.
The best place to start is by replying to the messages that have already been posted. You can use the thread attached to the post or send the user a direct message.
To post your own instead, simply type /looking-for, select the channel you want, and send.

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

I might start one on Monday but I'm not sure yet and I'm tired after work so I'll let you know
is it okay to not use a backstory for a character?
Can you elaborate?
if i dont know what backstory i should write or i dont want to is it okay?
I would check with whoever is DMing but it would be chill with me as long as you know what they act like haha
i see
To me a backstory is a huge part of my characters. It makes them who they are today. Though I don’t know what it is like for other people.
I would say no, but I like roleplay in my campaigns. Your backstory is your reason for being where you are right now, how you got there and such things. it doesn't have to be very long, it can just be something like "got tired of studying and wants to experience the real world" or something like that. The more backstory, the more the DM can try to work that into the campaign
Question: is there a way to customise how you cast magic? As in creating a character
that would be up to the dm. It would also depend on what kind of customization, if it's mostly flavour I can see most Dm's agreeing, if it's more it might be a different story
In some games your backstory is whats happens in the game, like, coming out as a lvl 1 nobody and becoming someone of great power. So I think it's ok to not have a backstory, but I think for roleplaying purposes would be cool to think at least what motivates your character to go out adventuring
My general DM advice: #dnd-newcomers message
Expand your search? There are plenty of places to look for games/groups.
Besides here, skim various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&D Beyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, EN World, RPG Geek, RPGnet), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
If you’re interested in play by post (asynchronous text-based play), check out Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, D&D Beyond's forums, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
ty!
Can you have two fighting styles if you take the Fighter initiate feat?
The description says you can.
Alright, thank you
They just need to be different. You can't stack the same one.
hey I'm a relatively new player I've played before but I've never played constantly I have some knowledge of the game but I was hoping I could join a party and play and learn more
Awesome profile pic. Check out #find-a-game for instructions on how to use our recruiting channels.
What's a saving throw and when do I use them?
A saving throw is an attempt by a character (either a player character or an enemy) to resist damage or some type of harmful effect. Some spells and abilities determine when the target makes a saving throw, but otherwise you as the DM can call for one such as when a player triggers a trap or is otherwise trying to avoid something, whether that's physically avoid it or mentally.
Im new to dnd, how do I exactly play it online?
This article gives a good primer: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Basically, have a means of communicating. That's really the main requirement.
Some use Discord and a virtual tabletop (Roll20 or the like) for maps. Some use no visuals but just imagine it (AKA theater of the mind). Some use text-only. It varies.
Whats the difference between DnDBeyond and Roll20?
DDB is official Dnd?
Roll20 is a side website, not dnd brand i think
count me if im wrong
Beyond is an official toolset, but it doesn't yet have a virtual tabletop for maps and tokens. Roll20 has D&D content, but like DDB, you need to pay for it officially. But you can also use Roll20 for just maps, tokens, and dice.
DDB is basically just info Roll20 is VTT
hey im new, and ive been researching a bit into classes and im perflexed about choosing between rogue, fighter or ranger
can someone give me guidance on selection
Fighter is good at all weapons and tends to favor the frontline. Rogues are a bit squishier in terms of HP, but they can be up front. They're good at several skills (commonly sneaking) and can do some pretty bananas damage thanks to their sneak attack ability. Rangers are often nature-based warriors who have a bit of magic. They can be, I think, a good intro for someone who wants to learn the spellcasting classes without being overwhelmed.
there are too many magic characters in my group so i cannot be picking that
im thinking between fighter and rongue which one is easier to use or better at low levels, and pros and cons?
any dnd game i can join?
Either or is fine; they're martials, so they don't have a lot of mechanics to learn. It really depends on what subclass you pick; I really like the rogue ones, whereas there are several fighter subclasses that don't appeal to me.
See #find-a-game for instructions on using the recruiting channels.
How do cantrips work?
They often taken an action, and they don't consume spellslots. Do you have more specific questions?
Do they require rest? How often can they be used?
Out of combat? They can be used as often as the player likes (with the DM's okay). Some of them are limited by things like duration or concentration, so it depends on the spell details.
They don't require any rest, though; they can be cast at will.
oh okay
which one is more reliable with multiclass
I don't mess with multiclassing, but maybe fighter for the fighting style and action surge. At this point, though, you should check in with the #character-discussion folks.
and what are the races either rogue or figther of general "meta" or well paired
okay
My approach is play what you find interesting or cool. I don't follow the meta. #character-discussion will help you more on that front.
okay ty
Do I have to join a game before I make a characther or can I use a premade one when I join a game?
That's up to the DM. Some don't provide pre-mades. I would have some character concepts and be familiar with HOW to make a character if possible before joining a game.
So, I'm pretty new to the whole d&d thing, I just know a very small bit about it, but in general not much. How would you reccomend I get started with this whole thing?

Is the point buy method for abilities like what's used for the adventures league the most common method of assigning ability points, or is it pretty much a toss up between the three methods?
Yes
Hi everyone. Thought I'd introduce myself here. Never played DnD but always wanted to give it a go. Thought I should probably take a deeper look into it
Lol. Yes it is the most common or it's a toss up?
I don't know if there's any way to know which is the most common, honestly.

Yes, point buy is the most common because it's the most fair.
That's what I figured. Thank you!
But that's the individual DM's choice on how to roll for PCs' ability scores.
Understood. Thanks again.
If I make a reaction to run + 2 dashes due to cunning action when one of my allies says something, if they say it does that mean they use their action or can they say it and use another action?
You use an Action to Dash and then a Bonus Action (Cunning Action) to Dash again.
I don't see where a Reaction comes into play?
Hi, I’m completely new to d&d any help would be great x

depends on what it is they're saying. Most Dm's will allow people saying something short like "help!" without it costing an action. If you try to convince someone to not fight you however would take more, so would cost an action. I don't see how moving comes into it, normally you can move, use dash as an action, and as rogue you can do another dash as a bonus action with cunning action
When they say "Disperse" then I run.
You still have to wait for your turn in the Initiative order unless you Ready your Action. Because you use your Action to Ready, you can't Dash with your Action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Ready
First, you decide what perceivable circumstance will trigger your reaction. Then, you choose the action you will take in response to that trigger, or you choose to move up to your speed in response to it. Examples include "If the cultist steps on the trapdoor, I'll pull the lever that opens it," and "If the goblin steps next to me, I move away."
When the trigger occurs, you can either take your reaction right after the trigger finishes or ignore the trigger. Remember that you can take only one reaction per round.
There are only certain things you can do as a reaction, like an attack of opportunity or casting certain spells. Running is not one of them, even with cunning action
HOW DID I SAY THAT SO WRONG, i meant ready action not reaction
thanks anyway
If you are grappled and they choose to slam you into the ground, do they need to roll hit dice.
I'd say that would be a contested roll, the grappler first need to get up, with an unwilling person, then fall back down sort of
@exotic remnant I'm a new player. I tried the small guided adventure that really only three decisions, but would like to play a more involved campaign if it is possible. Is there something like that?

Can someone experienced in dms help me finish filling out the character sheet?
sure

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me with the ropes of DND
I have 0 clue what I’m doing :b
Hi there! Have you tried reading the free basic rules yet? https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
I recommend reading the bits about how to make a character (see chapter 1) and the Chapter 7, 8, and 9 (covers the core game mechanics).
Additionally check out the pinned message here on the channel - it has lots of useful resources to help get you started.
hey, im a completely new player and i have no idea what im doing. ive looked at guides and stuff but its kind of difficult to get my head around, theres so much stuff that i need to know, does anyone have any advice?
its kind of been overwhelming trying to take everything in so it would be nice if a more advanced player could just give me some pointers on where to start and how, and whats most important to know before playing etc

If you have more specific questions I'd be happy to answer.
alright thanks! i’ll look through this stuff and let you know if i have any questions : )
Sure thing
heyy im kinda stuck on ability scores. would that be something i should worry about now if im working on my character?
What are you stuck with?
Ability scores are decided once you join a game. There a few different ways people do it. Either using Point Buy or rolling for them. Most tables accept point buy, but it's super case by case. Almost no table would allow pre-rolled stats though since you could just make up any stats and say you rolled them.
oh okay, so when you role for your ability, the number you get it how skilled you are at that thing for say?
and would that change depending on your class?
Have you read the Basic Rules?
ive been going through them
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Because it sounds you're mixing information from different things.
yeah i think so, thanks
The Ability Scores are what determine all your other bonuses and how good you are at anything. They are based on rolling for them plus adding racial bonuses. They aren't affected by your class choice.
For example if you have high str you are good at athletics, hitting and doing damage with str based weapons like a longsword or greataxe, and it also affects how far you can jump.
If you have low str you aren't good at those things.
I suggest looking over the ability score section to get a good idea of what each ability score does.
Okay, thanks!
Hey, i recently wanted to start playing DnD, i have already learned the Basics and wanted to ask where i could find an online group who appreciate newcomers?
Check out #looking-for-players
Thanks didnt See that.
Sorry if this is stupid or belongs in other channel i had question about percentage
if something has 37% chance to succeed, how to roll for that? i assume d10 and d% right? but what outcome counts for passing, anything above 37? or anything above 67?
am i thinking this correctly?
In what context do you need to account for percentages in this way?
i asked dm a hypothetical question and he said "well it would probably have like a 30% chance to fail" and i was wondering how you would roll that
they went to sleep so i can't ask them
Usually a d% (two d10s with one representing the double digits and one representing the single digits, or a d100 on anything that can roll for that) and rolling under for percentages.
i've never had to roll for something percent
Elgate's answer was my instinct too, for whatever that's worth.
You sometimes see it in older editions and for some tables. I think Divine Intervention for clerics does it as well
Yep.
got it, i mean what number would you need to achieve for 30% success? does that mean, on those dice, i need to a roll a 30 or more to succeed 30%?
Imploring your deity’s aid requires you to use your action. Describe the assistance you seek, and roll percentile dice. If you roll a number equal to or lower than your cleric level, your deity intervenes.
30 or less on a percentile
It doesn't matter Clown thise mean the same thing.
ok so 30% means i need to roll 30 or lower to win it
Yes.
i just wated to know what it needed to roll to beat it, is all
It's not beat
Because that means on a 1-30, out of a hundred, you succeed= 30%
so like, 70% success means i roll 70 or lower, anything higher means i don't succeed
It could be, but that's also less intuitive than roll under
Any 30% range
Also you could roll a d10 for any percentage that is in 10s (10% = 1 on a d10, 20% 1-2 on a d10, 30% 1-3 on a d10), and for 5%s you can use a d20
i see. thank you for helping me out
So, I used DNDBeyond [BeyondDND?] for a character sheet, god decent rolls for the stats, but my friend told me most GMs want people to set those before they start a campaign, is that normal?
Yeah, the general wisdom is to use standard array or point buy to make a character before you have a DM, a least for practice. I wouldn't trust any random person to come into the game with real rolls.
What's the difference between a GM and a DM?
Just different names for the same role.
ooook, thank you
The more complete answer is that Dungeon Master is the trademarked name for it, and Game Master is a more generic term.
Are there any applications or websites I could find a party to play a campaign or something even though I'm really new?
oooohhhh
Yeah, there’s plenty of beginner-friendly games out there.
We’ve got a few channels right here you can search.

how do i distribute ability scores in my character sheet, im new
How did you generate your ability scores? Rolling, Point Buy, or Standard Array?
Also depend on the character. Each class has it's own stat needs, you can find a suggestion in the quick build box above the class table
I tried finding this in the basic rules but I didn't see anything about it. If combat starts, can I draw two light weapons? Alternatively, if I use my action to draw and attack with one light weapon, can I use my bonus action to draw and attack with my other light weapon? Or can I only draw one weapon and have to use my action to draw the other weapon, even though they're both light?
Hey everyone, I played dnd 25 years ago and have decided to pick it back up and introduce my teenage sons. I have used some AI for fast character creation and created some other cool custom stuff content with it as well.
You draw your weapon on your Attack action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#OtherActivityonYourTurn
you could draw your weapon as part of the same action you use to attack.
Did you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?
As in server rules?
no, the dnd 5e rules
Bonus action would be two weapon fighting. You can only attack once using the attack action and once with TWF as a bonus action. At higher levels you might get extra attack depending on class and subclass

So, given that I'm attacking with two light weapons, could I draw them both on the same turn if I use my action and bonus action to attack with them?
Yes.
Yes
Dope
Note that you don't add your ability modifier to the bonus action attack damage unless you have that fighting style
Would anyone be able to direct me where I could find online games? Benn trying to find a group for a while on Roll20 but can't seem to get a group, for every game there seems to be 50+ applicants.

Hey, im a new player.
I mostly binge watch Viva La Dirtleague DnD but i'd love to play it myself one day.
I only have experience playing Dungeon Crawler Classics and had a blast!
Hopefully i'll be able to pick up a few starter one shots.
hey guys! i'm kinda new to d&d and spellcasting, i've few questions, hopefully you can help me 😄 . i'm creating an artificer. Lets say i'm at level 2 (which means i know two level 1 spells) and i've to level up at 3. i can learn a new level 1 spell. like is said in the tasha manual
the question is, i choose another level 1 spell from the generic list BUT, at level 3 i choose the spec (for instance: alchemist)
but when i get at level 3 i've access also to alchemist spells like healing word and ray of sickness
those two spells are taken BESIDE the other generic one i can choose?
Yes
You can know more spells than you have slots (capability) to cast.
At 3rd level, you can have 3 spells prepared, which you choose, and you always have healing word and ray of sickness prepared as alchemist so total of 5 prepared spells
what, there's no limit to spell known? 😮 the only limit is the spell "prepared" ?
Depends on the class, but kinda?
ah i see!!! so i can use up to three but i've access to 5
Depends on your class but wizards can "know" pretty much every spell wizards can know - but they still have to have it prepared and have the spell slot to be able to cast it.
yes you can spread out your slots however you want
So in your artificer's case they may know (and have prepared) those 5 spells, but they still only have 3 slots.
so i can prepare 3 spells and when needed after rest i can switch those 3 spells from the pool of 5 which i have?
No, you can switch the 3 to any spell in that list of the same level
because the 2 from the alchemist spec are "always" prepared?
Yes
BUT i can use up to 3 of the prepapred i think
ty so much i got it 😄
i've last the last question then!
Shoot!
when i'm at level 5 i've access to level 2 spells, if i've finished using my level 1 spell slots (whit JUST level 1 spells) but lets say my level 2 spells are "useless" for that particular scenario. can i use level 1 spells to spends in level 2 slots?
tell me if i did not explain myself xD
Yep - you can use higher level slots to cast lower level spells.
You can upcast spells yes. So you csn use 2nd lvl slots for lvl 1 spells
This is known as upcasting - some spells may have additional effects (more targets, more damage) when upcast.
The spell will tell you if you get more damage or other effects by upcasting
What Carolyse said
ty so much! and i read that it is required for the artificer to wield a focus to cast some spells like thieve's or "some kind of artisan tools"
lets say that for my artificer i'd like him to cast spells from some sort of gauntlet, is it considered an artisan tool or artisan tool are strictly something specific and to cast spells from that item i've to craft it and make it an infusion or something like that?
Artisans tools are specific, like alchemist tools or smiths tools
Also it's not specifically an item noted as a focus or tool, that would be something you'd need to discuss with your DM.
so at level one i'd imagine my artificer casting spells from scredrivers and cogs? xD
but to make it so, i just have to discuss it with dm?
Kindof yeah 😜 I played an alchemist a while back, and used alchemist tools as spell focus. I'd "cast" acid splash by throwing two vials together, shake and spray (like mentos in cola)
It would be something you can discuss with your DM to see if they'd allow gauntlets (or something else) to be your character's focus. Generally most DMs have no issue with "flavor" things - as long as it doesn't impact game mechanics.
You'd have to ask. The armorer i believe can use the gauntlets as spell focus for example. Alchemist needs tools rules as written, but perhaps your dm will allow for something different
LOL ok xD! the tools don't have any particular stat right? like they are just tools, the stats come from the spell itself i guess?
like lets say "ok i've a scredriver which i use to cast firebolt" but the dice and so on just come from the spell, not the artisan tools?
tyvm guys! you helped me a lot! it was very appreciated 😄
Hello!!!! New here!!!
hellooo
Seems like alot to take in
Howdy
Yeah, there can be a lot. But really when you're playing its just rolling a d20 and then adding a number to your sheet and knowing your own abilities which are also written down.
If you can roll a d20 and add a number to it, you're good to play dnd.
It should be noted that some classes are considerably easier to play than others
Hi everyone. I'd like to start DMing, I'd like to ideally do my own homebrew campaign (not completely from scratch, might take some cues from standard 5e modules) but I'm not sure if I should start off with a proper campaign or try my hand at running a one-shot first before diving into the deep end. Any thoughts?
My recommendation is to always start with one-shots. Those will give you a chance to explore how you like to run your games while still getting satisfying, meaningful conclusions.
In addition to that it’ll also get you and your players acquainted with each others’ play styles.
Hmmmm okay. Would it be doable to like run a one-shot within my homebrew setting and slowly transition into a larger campaign as I go along?
Sure, that's fine.
Will help you flesh out your world. Start small and work outwards
Cool!
People do that all the time when people really liked a one shot
can all players spam the same perception check on something?
or would it count as only one via helping?
or would it be separate rolls for each player if they didn't specify that they were helping?
depends on the dms ruling, some would allow only help action to count, while others would refer to it as more of a group check
personally i would say a group check is more appropriate if everyone wants to check it out. if people arent specifying theyre helping, then it isnt exactly a help action
I usually go "You guys can all roll or one person can roll with advantage."
Most of the time they pick the advantage option.
If it's a different check for specific knowledge like history or arcana, I usually pick which characters might know and have them roll. Or if multiple people might know, same offer of rolling once with advantage or doing individual rolls.
Simple and works for my tables and stops piling on to checks.
I bought a starter set and I don't have any friends to play with any suggestions? xd

Make some friends by luring them in with dnd.
Set up a large box propped up with a stick with a string tied to it, put dnd inside, when someone enters, pull the string and catch em
If you have a local game store or library, you might check out if they have D&D programming. Also, check local groups on the likes of Facebook or MeetUp if you don’t want to play online with others.
Lmaoo I mean yeahh why not!
hi, does it sound familiar, if there is any spell that as a wizard you could leave some answers ready, but only activates with the proper questions? like in "I, robot" movie kind??? cheers
excuse me could you reword that?
Leave some answers ready?
like an "hologram" that answers
Are you thinking of Magic Mouth?
Programmed Illusion?
even if the wizard is gone?
What?
Also thx ^^
maybe, it's kinda hard to go through all the spells in dnd 5, even just ilusion there are many, hehe

I’m sure there are. Are boardgame cafes a thing over there?
I’d find the ones closer to you and ask the owners. There’s a solid chance there’s other people looking for communities and they might know.

How does draconic fire resistance work? doesn't say how the damage is resisted for fire
Damage resistance means that you take half the damage.
Resistance means half damage.
If i have negative bonuses and disavantage to Stealth but the situation would naturally make my character stealthy, would it actually hide?
Like a black dragonborn in the middle of the night in a dark forest or smth
Roll stealth and see.
The DM would determine whether the situation warrants a change to your roll.
The dm could give you advantage if the enemies don't have dark vision or they feel the conditions give you advantage. But at most it would be a flat roll since advantage and disadvantages cancel out.
Got it, thx
You can find that in the rules here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#DamageResistanceandVulnerability
Are Prestige classes in any book ? Since they aren't from DnD originally
No, D&D 5E doesn't do Prestige Classes anymore.
Prestige classes was a 3.5E thing. 5E just has sub-classes.
3.5E had prestige classes.
5E has subclasses.
mmh
There was one UA (unearthed Arcana, playtest material) with prestige classes for 5e and it didn't stick.
5E has core classes (artificer, barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, rogue, paladin, ranger, sorcerer, warlock, and wizard). Each of those classes has sub-classes.
3.5E had core classes but then you could multi-classes to prestige classes that had strict prerequisites.
Why do you ask?
Hey guys, i'm creating an artificer lvl1 which i'll make it into an armorer. as cantrip i choose prestidigitation and firebolt. which lvl 1 damage spell would you suggest me to pick beside detect magic? catapult or tasha caustic brew?
firebolt is the only dmg spell i have
personally, I loved fairy fire. Not a damage spell, but if it sticks all attacks have advantage which is huge
You might get more input from #character-discussion. I would opt for Catapult by dint of staying out of range myself.
I wondered if I could add Prestige classes in my campaign but if you say that subclasses replaced it, then it's not important
That's a lot of work. You're homebrewing at the point.
