Ahh, okay. That makes sense. Thank you!
Choose from the list or make your own up
I'll start worrying about that later now that I know it's basically just how I plan to play the character. Thanks again.
Any other questions?
Not for the moment, but I expect I’ll have some more in a few hours.
Yo, I'm trying to figure out how to play DnD and Idk where to start. Could anyone here explain stuff to me or show me where I can get started?
?new - Check out this list of resources to help get you started. I recommend giving the basic rules a skim and maybe checking out some videos of folks actually playing the game (so you can see how the game mechanics and rules in use - although keep in mind many D&D liveplays focus first on entertainment), then find a group to play with.
Here's a few excellent resources to get you started!
• Try this guided interactive adventure to create your first character and learn the basics of D&D.
• The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
• For a bite-sized breakdown on specific rules, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series on YouTube.
• You can create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
• Get advice on making your first character, then check out the rest of the New Player's Guide articles.
• Start here to learn how to be a Dungeon Master.
• Get advice on starting strong for your first game, then browse the rest of the Dungeon Master Tips series for more.
• Check out #find-a-game or this article for instructions on finding a group.
• Get advice for playing online with this article or video.
I'll try giving it a look
Would anyone here be willing to assist me with the character sheet? (vc or text)
Hi, um... I just recently started but I felt that the character sheets in dndb were very helpful. There's a crapton of info they provide during character creation
Throw the question and we might find someone capable 🙂
I got some help, I think that I understand it now
I finally made a character sheet
whats the general consensus on suggesting things to players (as another player) when they're new to the game? im also new but some of my friends are entirely new and sometimes i wanna suggest like "you should put the range of that spell here instead of there" to help them out
is that like bad to do or is it generally ok? 🤔 curious because i am p new and am not sure exactly the etiquette of the game lol
its especially hard not to try to suggest things that would be better for the group when we're in a life or death scenario-
do i just let them do what they're gonna do or try to help at all sjhgkjgf
I think it's okay as long as you ask them if it's okay.
is it aight even if im saying it to them out of character? like not my character giving them advice, just me as a friend giving them advice-
Probably best to let them make their own mistakes to learn from them
-guy that never played dnd before
If they are new I’d let them help, more experience players will self police to be honest
LOL fair
ahh ok, got u
currently our party consisted of our DM who's experienced, someone who knows a lot but is new to playing, someone who's experienced as a player, and two people who are entirely new, one having only gotten into d&d like a week before we started to play lol
i personally am new to playing and have only really been into the game for about a month xD
Sure! Again make sure they are okay with it and also frame it in such a way that you leave it up to them to make the decisions for their character, but I think it's okay to lean over and say "Hey - have you considered using your 2nd wind there?" or whatever.
Hmm okay! Got u
I hear a lot about "metagaming" and was afraid that I was potentially doing that 😭 im not entirely sure cuz like i said idk all the unspoken rules of the game yet lol
yeah i'll ask my party members if its aightttt
thanks guys :P
Also random side note but it's very fun playing as a character who is easily impressed by magic, but I don't know much about the game myself so my reactions to new spells is genuine LOL
Meta gaming is if one of the players starts going if this enemy only has ?hp hit it with fire to do double damage etc etc try to keep person knowledge above the table and just play what your PC would know
Can you share it?
Swap your dex and charisma scores equip your armour and rapier
I concur
Is this rolled or point buy?
n/m, 18 is a giveaway, rolled
Vulcanos, which subclass are you aiming for?
I'm not sure. I'm VERY new to this
your gear doesn't seem right. Did you use the gold option or the starting equipment option?
yea
It's one or the other. Not both.
OR...not both, which one did you use?
equipment
then you should have a shortbow instead of your shortsword
Other than the equipment it’s a very nice rogue now go backstab someone
I don't have anyone to play with

oohh ok i get u
Or check out your local game/comic stores
equipment choices:
Rapier or Shortsword (grab Rapier)
Shortbow+ or Shortsword (grab bow)
Burglar, Dungeoneer or Explorer pack (I personally prefer Dungeoneer, but Burglar is also an option)
I don't have one of those lol
Universities/colleges may have game clubs, public libraries sometimes even have groups that meet there to play.
What is your character's background?
isnt there a website with a map showing where u can find stores near you that host d&d / mtg games?
It's BIG should I send it here? It's a character that I've adapted for dnd (a bit)
No, background, not your backstory.
i think by background they meant like one of the options like sage, criminal, etc
Ohhhh
it affects some things of your character :O
Feature: Heart of Darkness
Those who look into your eyes can see that you have faced unimaginable horror and that you are no stranger to darkness. Though they might fear you, commoners will extend you every courtesy and do their utmost to help you. Unless you have shown yourself to be a danger to them, they will even take up arms to fight alongside you, should you find yourself facing an enemy alone.
so your background is Haunted One?
yea
You are missing a skill then

You have 4 skills from Rogue, two from Haunted One, and one from Human.
I suggest Perception.
You are also missing your equipment from your background.
This is where my knowledge ends
I need help
If you go back through the creation steps you should see where you missed selecting a skill.
Similarly, if you go back through the creation steps you should see where you missed selecting your equipment. Also, I see you have 90 gp listed, you don't have 90gp. You have 1 sp as per your background equipment list.
yup
absolutely.
I have 3 games a week online :)
do u know how i can participate?
living the dream
I would recommend reading The Player's Handbook online, familiarize yourself with the game a little. Then I suggest reddit or perhaps roll20 for searching for a group.
You can find people to play with a variety of ways...via a Virtual Tabletop such as Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, etc. Or via #looking-for-players or #750812887697588356 or #looking-for-community etc.
definitely try learning the rules before you start your search for an online group.
more like the nightmare...forever DM :D
oh i did,I actually played the ice spire peak as a DM, i want to paly some adventure as a player now
LOL oh you're the DM for 3 campaigns?!

yes
oh man
DM is another way to play
that is .. a lot.. i think all i could handle would be being a player for one and a DM for one in one week xD
My regular group, a newbie group turned regular, and my sister's kids and their friends.
Abhi, I think the comment was referencing me. :)
oh yes lol
speaking of DMing, I should probably keep prepping for tomorrow. LOL
I use Roll20 + Discord for voice
My campaign I DM is just Discord, Avrae Discord bot, and DnDBeyond character sheets. Just theater of the mind.
I play in several others that use Discord for voice and Roll20 for maps, DnDBeyond for character sheets.
Lots of different ways to play online
yup
I use Roll20 for character sheets because I like Roll20's customizability over DnD Beyond's sheets. But, that customizability a much higher bar of entry (skill requirement) than DnD Beyond
Abhi, spread your net WIDE...that is your best bet. Look everywhere.
I'd actually suggest starting with your own peers and friends.
Then really you can start looking wherever. And yes spread that net wide.
haha yeah i did, tghe problem is availability
And be patient - putting together a group of people to play a game can be challenging even in the best of times.
and most of my friends are busy with work, RL, so hard to get them together to play
Haha @safe badge I have all the time just no one to play with and no idea how to play 🤣 so anyone that can teach me anything would help
some Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) also have resources to find groups...I would check those too.
for my friends we all get into a vc in a private server
and we use roll20
dnd beyond is very useful for making a character sheet
yes i just checked dnd beyond today
what would be usable bonus action stuff for Barbarian that is raging?
That'll probably depend a lot on your subclass.
Totem barbarian
My friends all bailed on me so I’m turning to the online community
Sure as barbarian I could knock down large or smaller but lately I have mostly faced huge or larger
Hi all I’m extremely new to dnd. Does anyone have like any material to recommend to get started

Hey I'm still sort of new to DnD I recently left my DnD Group, Due to issues with a few members and Not having fun as I ones was, Started to look elsewhere as I really want to start a new group and hopefully get back to enjoying it, I stick to a simpler set that I was using with my group as most of my group has some form of learning difficulties and health problems I understand there is more rules to DnD The Main Dice I have been using is D20 , other dice, like for saving throws I have been Dungeon Master once I had fun and like to think I tried my best despite my disrespectful group I have quite a few characters I would like to to try with new people and my old Characters to bring back.
Well if you look up here, these are some resources to help you with learning the rules
Heeey what's up?? I'm a brand new DM here looking for help-
What kind of help were you looking for?
Best way to afford books, do campaigns, and help setting up sheets for certain species/classes
Well if you make a d&d beyond account, you will have access to the free basic rules and lost mines of phandelver. That's more than enough to get you started to run the game
Well your own campaign needs nothing more than your imagination (which I’d hope is free).
Hm
D&D Beyond also lets you purchase just parts of books, too.
So if all you want is a specific subclass, you can buy that individually.
Do you know any places or websites where I can affordably buy books? I've seen the prices on DND Beyond....
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Pretty sure all the digital sites are gonna have roughly the same prices, though.
Sometimes you can find good deals on the physical books, though.
Isn't it only d&d beyond, roll20 and fantasy grounds for digital sites?
Best stores?
I don’t know. I buy all mine digital.
Alright uh....what do you know of Artificers and warforged
Is there something specific you want to know?
is it normal for a DM to say "make a strength save" out of the blue and refuse to explain anything about the situation beforehand?
It could be depending on the context
Generally the players should have an idea of where things are coming from, which depends on the DM accurately describing the scene before the effect takes place, unless the effect is from some unseen source, be it some invisible enemy waiting to do their thing or a trap of some sort or Plot™️
I will sometimes call for such a check and then explain what happened.
okay - this person does it several times per session, often in-between scenes where there is no context whatsoever
yeah depends
Anyone know another beginners interactive I could do? The dnd one seems to be broken
Like on my phone it doesn’t let me continue past the d20 roll and on my laptop the site lags like crazy
Beginners interactive?

Try emptying your cache?
On what and how
Your browser's cache.
Also on my laptop its the only site that lags
Hope there is something else cause i wanna learn how to play correctly and everything
Might be worth trying to enable/disable hardware acceleration on the browser.
Wdym
Go to your browser's settings.
In your browser settings, depending on which one you're using, you may want to try disabling hardware acceleration if it's already enabled and seeing if it works better - if not then making sure it's enabled.
If you google "<your web browser> enable hardware acceleration", you'll get search results that will give you instructions on how to do it.
Also worth making sure that you're using a "modern" web browser. ie., Chrome, Firefox, even Edge I suppose. You'll probably get best results from Chrome or Chrome-based web browser though.
I use opera gx
Should be fine but might as well try in another browser.
Wait am i doing this on phone or laptop
Laptop
Your best bet for learning are using the rules and things like the handbook helper. The guided adventure just helps you get a basic idea and get you into the starter set adventure
Oh
Still very laggy
D&D is a game of rules. Start by reading the first four chapters on character creation.
Why not 5 6 and 7
Because those don't directly pertain to character creation but you can.
Hm
Idk i feel super sleepy
Dude i got something super cool today

How you read the free Basic Rules yet?
So, I have no idea what DnD, I've just heard about it in pop culture, usually made fun of. But some guys in a creative writing server recommended it to me.
I've read the basics , but I've not made my character yet. Is there a campaign where beginners like me can join and understand the game?

But finding a game can take time. If you want to see what a game is like in the meantime, there are numerous videos online of people playing. D&D beyond has a series called battle for beyond, there's dimension 20 and critical role. And many many more

Sure
How do i create a homebrew item in d&d beyond? I can only find a way to create magic items, no options for normal items
This question would best fit in #ddb-support which is for DnDBeyond technical support but to answer your question, DnDBeyond does not support homebrew creation of normal mundane items or classes.
One way to work around this is on the front-end of the sheet, under inventory, click the Manage Inventory button and then use the Add Custom Item. Fill the fields out and then add to the character sheet.
how do yall make combat interesting
im dming a campaign rn with some friends and it gets pretty boring for players when its not their turn
like lets say theres 5 players and 1 enemy, they get bored 5/6 of the time when its not their turn
It sounds like they're not paying attention.
I narrate what happens during each turn of combat instead of just saying, "You miss. The orc hits and does three points of damage."
Describe in prose form each attack and spell cast.
I am currently running a 9 person campaign played (somewhat hilariously in a bar composed of players who met each other in that bar). In combat I have to maintain focus wihin the group, while also trying to avoid things being just mechanics. So what I do is call the first player and then say who is "on deck" and when the dice are down, narrate to them a brief description of impact of the attack. If it is something exceptional, AND I think they are prepared/able to narrate their own action I share the stage. (some players are more up to that than others), and then I keep things moving. Goal is <1 minute per player, because thats 10 minutes between turns.
I do a lot of framing for my players to keep them moving. A lot easier with smaller groups. (Oh, and hi, I'm new here)
yeah i have a 40 second timer rn for players to think of what to do on their turn and declare an action. dice rolling and rp isnt on like a timer or anything cause i dont want to discourage that
getting them to describe their actions could help a lot
I also like to divide the group (because of size) into clusters of players and rotate focus between them when out of combat. But ask was about combat. Always gauge whether people are engaged/having fun. People are hard on themselves uncessarily
i split the party once and it was a complete disaster
it had to be chunked into turns basically rotating between 3 groups and there were multiple people who would literally just leave the vc when it wasnt their turn
so i kinda just ruled that from then on they cant split the party cause the only time they did it was a mess
not so much dividing the group, but I guess it is, when they are in town, or pursuing plot-lines. It helps to break them into decision groups since people have a tendency to fall into affiliations, otherwise I flip around the table and keep moving the camera if you will.
gonna step-back now. 🙂
Never split the party.
People got bored and frustrated being the audience in the game.
yeah
splitting the party is almost never a good idea
How do you that anyway irl?
"Aight, you three, leave the room".
(Answer in #dm-discussion)
so I recently DM'd for the first time, only played once. It was Lost Mines of Phandelver and the goblin ambush, and apparently that encounter is pretty infamous, because my players almost wiped with the barbarian left at 1HP.
Now I crave to DM more but my friends have an availability problem, and I'd like maybe a little more experience before I try DMing for randoms online or something like that...
Try out a discord called Tale of the Twilight Realms
It's a 24/7 server that works like D&D's answer to mmorpg
It would be an easy and carefree way for you to get some experience whenever you want without waiting for pal availability

And that too. Also check out local comic book/game stores, book stores that sell D&D, local libraries, college/university clubs, etc.
There's also Facebook, Demiplane (website/service), Roll20 (virtual tabletop but has game/group finding services).
Ok thank u
i could have sworn that warlock had an ability that allows them to recover their spell slots, am i mistaken?
yo
After a short rest...
yeah yeah i know that, mustve been dreaming it XD
hello
BigC, just so you know it took me almost 2 months to finally get a short one play dnd adventure...im still new at this but you must know all these links are terrible if you dont know what your doing....we need a better way to show 1st timers the game. Just going to a link doesnt do scwat to help....
That's why this channel exists. To help newcomers get started with the game, answer questions and the like
Finding a good group to play with is honestly one of the hardest parts of the hobby

I DM’d during COVID lockdown with a group friends and none of has had played dnd before but we all loved it .However, I was also learning while trying to DM which was tough. Is there anyone who runs short campaigns (1-2 sessions) that I could play with from the player perspective? Or is there anyone that can provide a good teaching guide that doesn’t require too much experience to understand everything? We really want to get back into it on a regular basis.
You can always bug me for some of it if you want. I wouldn’t mind sharing some input or even hosting a small campaign

But we also channels like #dm-discussion for helping with your questions about dming
I believe that's wizard, it's an action (which doesn't need an action) called arcane recovery. This might just be an elvish thing.
how do ability scores work im confused
Warlocks recover spell slots on a short rest. That's what's distinct about their recovery.
They are generally a number between 3-18. The scores then determine the bonuses, which are added to dice rolls
Hello, new here, myself and my kids who are joining discord are trying to learn. We have the newest starter set, but the attempt at our first run was definitely rocky.. any tips?
Your ability scores are determined by one of several methods:
- Standard Array: you get a set of specific scores (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) which you disribute among your abilities as you see fit
- Random: you roll 4d6 (six-sided dice), remove the lowest one and then add the remaining three. You perform this 6 times and then distribute those 6 scores among your abililties as you see fit
- Point Buy: You get 27 points to distribute among your abilities the point cost of particular scores varies.
If you can say more about what was rocky, we can give more targeted advice.
I am a long time rpg video game player but I feel completely lost understanding how to dm our first adventure of dnd. Neither of my children have any experience either so the combat and my storytelling ability were the"rocky "part. I'm not sure we ran the first fight correctly, I guess atleast according to the actual rules which were slightly confusing
Have you watched any gameplay of D&D?
Where do you think you may have not run the combat correctly?
I've been watching some videos, I thought I had a decent understanding until our first try, which I understand wouldn't be perfect, but I want to make it fun for them as well as me.
I'm not sure I fully understand the rules enough to explain how to run and describe the battles or even more so in between the text boxes that I read from the adventure book in storm wreck isle.
I’m also with Valth666 and I’m also very confused on playing d&d
BuffRoy and Eleven are my kids btw 😋
You don't need to know the rules well to play so long as folks are having fun. If they're not, though, that's a different story.
Well, combat basically works like this:
- Roll initiative, this determines the order of who goes when
- When it's a person's turn, they state what they do
- If they attack, they roll a d20, add their attack bonus, if the total is equal to or higher than the AC of their target then they hit
- Then they roll damage
Each creature (PCs and NPCs) has an "action economy," various thigns they can do in combat. They get:
- Action
- Movement
- Bonus Action (though they can only take a Bonus Action if they have something to "spend" it on - some classes don't have a lot of Bonus Action options)
- Maybe a Reaction - only a couple things allow the possibility of a Reaction
None of these things have to occur in any particular order, you can do your Action before your Movement, your Bonus Action before your Action, and Movement can be split up - move a portion of your Movement, take an Action, then move the remainder of your movement (or whatever)
But also this entirely. I started playing D&D when I was 8 years old. My friends and I didn't play the game using all the rules, we just played with enough of them to have fun.
We didn't even try to learn all the rules
That was some much appreciated advice. I think we may have played some of the combat decently, although it was kind of dry with my attempt at giving them visuals to play along with.
I think the in between the talking points in the quest book are kind of confusing to me, how to proceed with the story and lead up to the talking points and the continuation of the quest/ chapter. Is it just as simple as making it all up as you go? And then just end up at the next talking points when following an already crafted storyline?
Anyone suggest what weapon an urchin paladin should choose?
Not really used to this format in anything, like, I don't know the limits and other stuff
Also, the fact that people pays to play makes it look like if I don't play I may face consequences, like people leaving, etc.
Do you have a copy of the rules?
I've got the general idea, but close to 0 knowledge honestly
You don't have to join the pay to play groups

Ooh ok! Thank you ^^
Any tips with making a homebrew character?
Im still pretty new to DND and I haven't really 'experimented' with homebrew yet.
I would hold of on homebrewing your own thing until you have a grasp of what's already in the game personally
What exactly do you mean by homebrew character?
Are you homebrewing the race? The class? The subclass?
But yeah, if you’re new to the game, I’d focus on understanding it first before you try to modify it. There’s a lot of different mechanisms at play.
The race was my main focus but I guess it makes sense to wait a bit
What kind of race did you have in mind?
Typically people homebrew things to fill a hole they feel can't be filled ny something that already exists
And a lot of times you can re-flavor an existing race into something else. Same mechanics, just described differently.
Turn a halfling into a mouse-folk, for example.
Follows the same rules but tells its own story.
Yeah, that's why I'm wondering.
Basically I made a water type of slime character on dnd beyond and the closest thing I could choose race wise (without buying anything) was a water genasi.
That makes so much sense. Why haven't I though if that before lol
There is also plasmoid. They are an ooze
For example, you could transform halflings into anthropomorphic mice without changing their racial traits at all.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/dungeon-masters-workshop#CosmeticAlterations
😜
Damn dmgnomes
It probably just better to make the character on a different format rather than go n buy a pack on dnd beyond, wouldn't it?
Cause I'm sure you'd have to buy smth to use the plasmoid race.
You could buy just that race if that’s all you wanted.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the purchase of the book itself, too.
All that said, if you really do want to homebrew something (with your DM’s permission), the folks in #homebrew can lend a hand.
If a wizard looses their spell book and they don't have a copy do they just loose their spells?
Ohh, I might just do that instead🧍
I'm not gonna lie I assumed you needed to buy a whole pack, not that you could just buy them individually.
Any spells they don’t have prepared, yes.
Unless you’re a Scribes wizard.
How do you just buy a specific thing?
Open that book in the marketplace, and you’ll see the individual items inside.
(Only in the website), cant do it in the app
I can see them listed but how do I buy them
You’ll find plasmoid here, for example.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/spelljammer-adventures-in-space
Oh
Thank you lol
The app has a bit more limitations than the website in general
Like what?
From my experience, you cant buy individual items, copy characters, add appearance descriptions
I'm sure there's more I cant think of
I like the app better because I'm used the the graphics now though lol
Hell yeah 🥳🦾
i almost died about 1 minute after my char was introduced
hey there im really new, and am hoping to do my first dnd sesh with the kids at my home

Do you read the whole book before doing a pre-written? I found my players wound up in a city before I was ready for it and I had no idea what was in there.
Hello, I would like to join a game as a complete beginner. if anyone can help it would be appreciated
Different people prepare in different ways. If you think reading the whole book ahead is the best way to be prepared (it very well might be), then go for it.

Hi! Me again! I found this guide on the web and I am so confused with it I need some help to understand what is happening here.
https://tabletopbuilds.com/flagship-build-chronurgy-magic-wizard/
They write, that this build uses a ASI of +2 Int, +1 Dex. But the tiefling race from the Players Handbook talk about +1 Dex, +2 Cha. Looking at the "winged" variant ins SCAD gives no hint, that the ASI are changed in any way.
Is this an error from the flagship builds? If I want to go with this, do I need to change the race to any other, that DOES provide the int and dex bonus?
(like the forest gnome)
They’re probably referring to the rule in Tasha’s where ASIs can be assigned anywhere regardless of race.
I would avoid looking at 'builds' as a newcomer
They can focus on more complex/niche/specific concepts that may not actually help with learning the game
They also tend to make specific assumptions about how your DM is going to run their game, or even what content is allowed.
Thanks for the clarification. I was only wondering if I miss some really basic part because of the different allocation of the ASI.
As mentioned, they're likely using an optional rule which your DM may or may not be using
Where is that from?
I was trying to find some simplified spell cards for my 7 year old, stumbled across this random thread with a link to a dropbox. Dunno if it's okay to post that here, but it was just made by someone, not like pirated.
That does constitute pirated content, as that's not an SRD spell so distributing the information is piracy (you can see it says PHB in the corner)
Oh, sorry I didn't know.
S'all good
As for that icon, it's not a standard icon so only the original creator would be able to tell you
I'm still working on a lore for my character, can i copy paste it here?
#1045166392174972938 is probably the best place to get feedback.
If you're curious about official lore and how it impacts your character, I think that'd be appropriate.
Rather than asking for a mentor, maybe try asking questions
Have you read the basic rules?
you can check the pined messages to get started traveler

can i join a vc with someone
is it something that you're struggling with?
alright
Can i have help with making my character
You need help?
What kind of help were you looking for, specifically?
I bought the stormwreck isles set. I will be the DM with 3 players. The book suggests having some players play 2 characters so you have one of each of the premade characters but I don't want to make them do that.
Any advice on how to make it work for 3 players? Or would it work fine with no modification?
I just don't wanna overwhelm them because we are all new, but I want them to be well equipped enough to not all die or have a really hard time with it lol
It should be doable with three, but combat might be marginally harder.
You could compensate by slightly reducing the enemies' HP if needed.
I would run all of the combat encounters through the builder on DDB and tune them a bit
Ok!
Thank you c:
(The builder on DDB?? That's a thing?)
yea reducing HP, or just removing one minion from some of the fights should make it dooable. That or play a DMPC sidekick class who is mostly passive
Also if anyone is familar with the campaign or can recommend 3 classes that would work well for it that'd be great xD
I'd start with a Cleric, if someone's up for it.
Ohh! That's so neat. Thank you.
I never knew that existed because this is my first time trying to DM
uh hello
If nobody chooses that... can I just let the wizard have cure wounds or something XD
i'm am having a hard time making my character i keep messing it up and i was hoping to be able to talk to someone in VC so they can walk me through it
You could, yeah. Unless no one wants to be the wizard either. 🤣
You could also make sure they get enough healing potions, or check out some of the optional healing rules in the DMG.
I'm running it for my two siblings and my mom and my mom has already claimed being a wizard 🙏🙏
Give them a healers kit and maybe 2 health potions
That is a fair point too!! Keeping that in mind
uh sooo i just want to get into dnd world could anyone teach me the basics or is there any faq place which i can read maybe a handbook
I believe stormwreck isles has an npc in it that will revive everyone in case of a tpk which is great to know lmao

Healing Surge is a good one for parties without many healing options.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/dungeon-masters-workshop#HealingSurges
THANKSSS
Aww damn i cant look at that cuz i dont own that book on ddb
It's in chapter 9 if you've got a physical book.
Was gonna get a dm guide book but didnt appear the store i went to had one in stock.
Do I need it or is it fine if I just use the info in the starter set?
(You might be able to borrow one from your local library.)
Or is it just recommended i should get one
Im not entirely sure what's in it to be honest
The kit you bought should have everything you need.
I do have a players handbook already
Im trying dnd for the first time can anyone recommend some good starters to use and tell me the rules?
You can peek at the table of contents here if you want an idea of what's inside:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg
Hey Tuna can i VC you and see of you can help me make a character?
I mean i just got the stormwreck isles one and it seems pretty cool!
I'm at the office today, so I can't do VC. Sorry.
Thank you anyways
You're welcome to ask questions in here, though. Is there something specific you needed help with?
Any race is good play what you find fun and interesting
dragonborn..? xD maybe
Maybe choose a race that gets racial bonuses on strength or constitution. I don't know which ones do specifically
Golith get a strength boost don't they?
Not sure but probably
There's an optional rule nowadays that will let you put those ability score increases wherever you like.
Oh? What do you mean exactly-
So if your DM lets you use that, it opens up a lot more options for your race.
I know Elf's are good with Magic right?
I.E. you don't have to pick a race with a STR bonus to prioritize STR.
If you're playing a Barbarian, just be aware that you can't cast spells while your Rage is active.
So if you do want a character that can also cast spells, you'd probably want to prioritize non-combat options.
What is better Fighter or Barbarian?
Depends on who you ask.
You can't go wrong either way. Just pick whatever options you find intriguing, and tell the story you want to tell.
Do you have a character concept in your head? How do you envisage you character
Yes but i am having a hard time making it and need help

What’s your character idea describ them
What are some basic rules and good to know things for dnd?
Stong but fast but also also having a good strategy
Do they use sword and shield, a battle axe, do they run into combat or pick their target and duel them?
I think theres a pdf of the basic rules on ddb
Do you fly into a rage in battle or are they a skilled fighter using their year of training to defeat their foes
Training
Then let me introduce you to the battle master fighter
You get battle manuvers to do stuff like trip attack, disarming, pushing, percussion strikes
Yeah, if you want tactical options, Battle Master is a good choice.
Fighters overall are very versatile, so they can fit all sorts of different styles.
Just gonna throw some sort of introduction out here because there's a bit to tell. Most significant being I am as new as they come to D&D, I have not played much of D&D and only watched few bits of campaigns, though I do very much would like to play and learn the game and enjoy the game along with everyone else here. I am very much open to new player advice or tips or any of that sort and if you have the urge to have a new player I may be open. Thank you for your time reading my paragraph and have a great Morning/ afternoon/ evening
Do you have a copy of the rules yet?
ive read the basic rules on D&D Beyond
Awesome!
as for physical books or equipment i have like two or three sets of dice and a leather notebook i got just for the D&D theme
regardless, I don't fully get it, I learn better by doing and trial and error unfortunately
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

how do I dm a dungeon run ? Is it a room by room thing ? Do they get the full map or is it 1 map per room ?
Either way!
Ideally the party keeps together and you run it one room at a time. Maps are optional but can be very helpful for complex dungeons or where you want to encourage tactical combat. Maps may be more helpful for the DM to keep track of everything.
If you can find a way to reveal it room by room, it’s a great way to keep the mystery going.
But there’s nothing wrong with just showing them the whole thing either.
Alright thanks.
About traps. Do I wait for them to walk into one or is it an automatic trigger when they enter a room ?
Might depend on the trap.
If you're playing with new folks, you might want to encourage them to investigate or you could call for a perception roll so they at least have a chance to spot it. Or you could have them fall for the trap and use that to encourage learning, but I tend toward a more forgiving approach.
If they don't think about checking for traps i try and use whoever is walking first's passive perception.
We are all new to dnd and the only reason i'm a dm is the fact that i watched some ttrpg games on ytb.
If everyone’s brand new, then I’s have a skeleton killed by a sprung trap at the beginning of the dungeon.
Put it into their mind early.
how do i type in the lookign for dm channel it dosnt let me

can i do it in any channel and it auto goes there?
Yep

When you’re done, it’ll post to the correct channel.
Heyo, I'm a bit new to dnd. And I just wanted to know, if I wanted to make a scifi character on DND Beyond. Where should I set it under?
Scifi?
Not sure what you mean by "set it under."
There are no scifi races, classes, or equipment. D&D is "medieval" fantasy game.
would i put a character sheet here for thoughts, comments or concerns here or somewhere else?

Most of us simply don't have the time or bandwidth to teach people one on one.
See the message Dunl called up
Or the pinned messages here in the channel.
what are the rules that i need to know most of all? i would love to read all the rules but at the same time im trying to join in as soon as i can
same
Check out the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Focus on understanding a character sheet and how your class works.
And the general game mechanics of like how to make an attack roll, roll damage, do a skill check, and roll a saving throw.
I didn't know there were so many
that were seeking a how
to learn the rules subject.
i just wanna jump in and learn while i play
could we get a bunch of new player in a game and have a few good player there to help guide us
Do you jump into Catan by just playing or do you at least skim the rules?
There's also the module
Sister Hood Of The Blade that
explains a great hands on learning
explanation of d&d mechanics.
i played catan but i did read the rules
While that is a way, it's much easier for everyone involved if you tried to learn what your character can do
i feel like that may be foolish and make the game a lot more unenjoyable
So I recommend doing the same - check out the rules then find a group to play with.
You don't have to know everything, but having a general idea of how the game works (by reading the rules) will help you.
Also will make it easier for group's to take you on in their game if you demonstrate that you're reading the rules and show an interest in continuing to learn.
agreed
Not to mention, finding a game is one of the tougher parts of the hobby.
I haven’t been a part of AL for over 5 years. Do I still have to abide by the php+1 rule or was that phased out?
yes - if you don't already have a group of folks wanting to play, finding a group can take time and patience
Take the time while you are searching for a game and try to make sense of the rules. We are here to help as well
I believe that has changed - check #adventurers-league for more info on what's currently allowed in AL play.
Anyone got a game that's bi-weekly that needs a player?

Hello I haven't played DnD in years and I wish to get back into it again. I have character sheet set up to level 15 on DnD Beyond but I don't know where to go from there?
Heya guys , played all the old d&d video games like balders gate 1 and 2 and neverwinter 1 and 2 back in the days but never knew any one who played d&d. Anyway been bored and was playing around with chatgpt and aidungeon, Ive been building a vox machina inspired AIdungeon world thats almost complete and have bought my first sets of dice today, some cool glow in the dark chessex lab dice
Going to buy a start kit I guess for me a few friends to tryn figure out
?looking - Use these channels to find a group to play with. That said you may need to create a new character for whatever game the group is playing (most groups don't allow you to just randomly start at level 15).

Both are linked above.
Is artificer still a half caster even though it gets spells at level 1?
It's a half caster because it gets spells only up to level 5
Hello
can someone please help me understand multiclass spellcasters
I would head to #dm-discussion
just did, sorry just joined didn't see it until now
What don't you understand? Have you looked at the rules for multiclassing?
i have just had it explained to me by my DM, i think i got the hang of it now
i was overthinking it a little
What happens if you take fey touched as a feat but you already know misty step?
If my character sheet says "Advantage on blank saving throws against magic" what does this mean?
do i add the score to the roll? or do i get 2 rolls?
you have a free casting of Misty Step from Fey Touched. that's about all that happens, and ofc the rest of the feat's benefits
from being a Gnome i assume?
advantage is that you get to roll two d20s instead of just one, and take the higher roll.
yes im a forest gnome
can i find this in the PHB ? my dm is being a bit of a stickler
so advantage on Wisdom, INT and CHA saves against magic i believe.
so whenever you make one of those saves against magic, you get to roll two d20a instead of one, and use the higher roll, then apply all other modfiers.
further info on how advantage and disadvantage work also exists in the basic rules and PHB btw.
thanks so much for your help
its in the PHB in chapter 7:using ability scores, i believe.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/using-ability-scores#AdvantageandDisadvantage
I have been wanting to do D&D forever and dont know where to start

I still don't fully get it. Can you use weapons that you're not proficient in? What does being proficient with weapons even do?
It allows you to add your proficiency bonus
Giving you a greater chance to succeed with weapons you are good at using vs weapons you are not good at using
And what about armors and shields?
And what about armor and sheilds?
If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.
Ok thx
hi
i was curious if the backstory of the character i made included spells that arent available at lvl 1, would i have to redo the story? or do i just ignore it and just leave it as just a setup factor
It'd be best if you explain why your PC can no longer use those spells
Wouldn't make much narrative sense to describe your character in your backstory as having the power to destroy mountains when they start the campaign at level 1 with itty bitty tiny magics 😅
yeahhh lolol
Yeah. Generally your backstory is what you did before you became an adventurer and it really doesn't make sense to be this all great and powerful being and then die to some random goblin ambush
Imagine your character in your backstory as being a level 0 character, they're just an ordinary person that is yet to be thrust into greatness (ie taking class levels)
oki thanks :)
I know I'm not new to DND but I have missed playing it and I hope to get back into it soon

Does anyone know approximately how long it would take to play through part 1 of the Lost Mine of Phandelver? The Goblin Arrows part
You might have better luck in #dm-discussion or #1029833015423143957, where there's a forum for the module itself. Do you mean how long would it take to do the whole chapter?
Ahh okay, and yes I do
My group reached Phandalin after about 10 hours of play, but I have two newbies and we take a pretty leisurely approach, so I think that's on the longer end.
depends on the pace, I agree. A group of half newbies/half experienced player got through it in 4hrs including the hideout
(in my own case)
but in a game of full newbies we took a few sessions since they wandered off to town after the ambush
Hey everyone I’m new to dungeons and dragons

Ahh ok! I was planning on doing part 1 as a test run for myself for the first time as a DM, most likely only playing through the 1st part as a oneshot basically. (Maybe I'll do more but i plan on playing a different one later)
I just wanted to know how long to set aside for myself and the players to get to some sort of conclusion basicallyy
Probably 4 hrs would be enough?
There are plenty of other free one-shots you could look into.
if you wrangle the players a bit you can get through it in an one-shot. but those intentions often fizzle when actually playing :P
Have not heard of any. Do you know any in specific?
I just wanna do something easy
Winghorn Press (check their site) has several. "A Most Potent Brew" is a good level-one adventure with all the pillars of play represented.
I like The Meeting at Deepnight, it's a very short Adventurers League adventure. has some combat, some rp and some investigation
Ooh ok! Thank you guys c:
I will check those out too and see what would be most enjoyable for me to run
You can also search DMsGuild for free/pay-what-you-want one-shot adventures too. Some good ones on there, for sure.
Hello everyone
Hi i'm a newcomer here. I've currently just got into dnd. I've already made my character and all..
Hello fam! I’ve been playing home games with friends as DM and player so i have a bit of knowledge. But I’m here to get more involved with the community and play more outside of my circle 😁
hehe newbie too, like super noob
Hehe well we're all here to learn so it'll be a fun experience
DnD is the best when you have no idea what you’re doing in my opinion, enjoy that while you can. I did and I regret nothing
Eventually you get to know the mechanics and stuff
do you have to have all the books and stuff to be able to play? I made like a char sheet on the dnd site but wasn't sure if it is right or not as don't want to be ott
haven't done a backstory or profile yet though just stats
Nope! All you need are the free basic rules
thats right
You can share a link to it in #character-discussion if you want someone to double-check everything.

bit to nervious to try a game yet, think i will let someone check it first
but thank you for that
https://locator.wizards.com/ if you want to try finding an IRL game or just some like minded people to talk to about dnd
Is there any plase were i can get pepole to play D&D
Up here are the channels we have
trying to understand warlock spell slots, they dont seem to work the same as wizard and its hurting my head lol
You get as many slots as the warlock table says, and they're all of the level that the table says they are
so theyre limited to only certain level spells then?
interesting
It's what makes Warlocks unique among the casters
hey i new to dnd. looking to get into it. im eyeing the D&D Core Rulebook Gift Set Digital + Physical Bundle on the dnd store. my goal atm is to eventually run games on foundry (im familiar with it and have run pf2e games on it). i think the physical/digital bundle will save me money in the long term as i wont need to purchase both the physical book and the digital copy separately, am i right? or is there another more economically sound way of purchasing the physical/digital books? im in Canada, are the prices in USD?
dude idk much abt dnd at all even making a character is so like huhhhh
I alr have an oc to base it off of but like
wtf is anything
have you read the section of the basic rules on making a character?
The step-by-step character creator is dope.
But yeah, if there's another existing character you want to try and create in D&D, there's nothing wrong with that.
(You might have varying degrees of success based on the character, of course.)
hmm okay
For example, my daughter wants to play Moon Girl:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/96320882
DND beyond is an easy way to make a character, u should check that out
thats what im using im just confused abt everything like the sources and differences between milestone level ups and xp
Oh. I believe your DM / the other players and you will decide together if you're using milestone or xp. You don't need to worry about that right now i dont think
The DDB character builder won't tell you how things work or why they're the way they are
is the critical role thing based on the podcast or is critical roll a real thing
For that you'll want to read the basic rules
Critical Role is a live play D&D show that has some homebrew on D&D Beyond, and some officially released products
i feel like such an idiot thank you for explaining everything :))
You're not an idiot, dww ^^
It can be definitely overwhelming at first how much options there are for character creation but you'll get the hang of it in no time im sure. And you dont need to know everything to play either
If you don't have a DM yet, I'd just leave those all as-is for now.
thank you! you guys are so sweet! okay I'm gonna go find out the rules lol ehehhehe :>
Honestly the best way to learn is in a beginners game, learning as you go is incredibly fun
hmm that makes sense how would i do that tho
Do you have a preference of In person or online games
not rlly but I kinda wanna do in person if possible
Usually local game stores have stuff for that
Or school clubs
I got into DnD during my Freshman year of highschool
There are ways to do online games as well using sites designed for it
can i ask something i'm completely new is this character fine? https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/96449547
Yes my child? What is your question?
okay cool!! (do I have to buy dice to start btw)
If in person u should but no. U can use dice online
For irl games yes (I have over 30 sets lol)
Online games have a dice rolling system
I find it more fun to use physical dice even tho i play online lol
They look cool
i don't really know what i'm doing when it comes to building a character?
okay cool good to know!! does it matter what kind of set i buy
I feel you there
Hmm, I can help with that
i wanna get some pretty resin ones
Hello! I am completely new and dont know anything about dnd besides it seems really cool! I have no idea on how to find a group, make a character, or really anything. I am hoping being here can help
Im willing to help people learn the basics to get into it, but I am not qualified for more in depth stuff
Do ittt just be prepared for it to quickly become a big collection LOL its hard to resist
Good luck
#dicegoblin
lol thank you!! :>>
Howdy howdy!! and im with you @lyric fjord Although I do know how to make a character kind of but im looking for a group to play with while at at college
bet im down with that
hell yea
Make sure to equip your armor. Looks like you missed a choice for your class, too (Bonus Cantrip).
like i can start a new character sheet too. are you able to vc so i can share my screen?
Other than that, it looks good.
Sure!
For sure
Anyone else need some character help?
where show we go for it?
Omg same! Im also kinda looking to find a friend group with it as well :3
i think dm's would be good?
What method does your DM use for making your stats?
Make sure to equip your items.
Choose what subclass you plan to be since you get that at level 2.
i don't really know they didn't really explain a lot to me. i joined late and they just said make a character.
anyone know where i can go to join a campaign? or start one?
I dont even know how to find a dm/group
same here
Finding groups is the easy part, being able to attend on a good schedule is the hard part
honestly my schedule is pretty flexible especially in the evening
My group just plays whenever we all are available
Same here!
Im balancing a job and college so Its hard for me
Im available pretty much all the time
same!
Sucks being someone available like all the time when the rest of your group isnt lol
Would play d&d multiple times a week if I could
Ive always wanted to become a DM but I dont have the time for it
i don't really myself lol. i was lucky to see a flyer but i'm thinking of not going again it had no structure.
I was a DM for a bit and yea its alot of work
yeahhh...about that...
I wanna learn to dm but i feel like id need experience playing first
what about it?
U dont need it but I would recommend it tbhhh
You would understand better what makes a game fun for players
that is very true but I liked to have some kind of structure and goal for my players when I was DM
Id be down to be a DM again but I dont have any players
I mean i also have final fights and the endgame for my players
but getting into it
the tension, the plots
yea like big things and certain monsters/creatures were probably the challenging part
and the plot!!
I just have no idea how to do anything related
Feels like the most interesting and fun quests to do are the most difficult to plan
that is very true
I loooove making stories and worlds but i just dont know how to do the actual game part of it
thats why they are interesting
like the...rules part?
I mean there are no rules if the DM deems so
honestly the game play part is mostly role play and the rules can be kinda confusing
rocks fall, everyone dies
Yeah like how to run the campaign. I know how to make a story but not how to make it into a game
and very true the DM can make up rules as they go if they want to
Maaybe get the dungeon master guide?
I haven't checked it out but if i were you id probably try that
Or just look on youtube for advice
I have the dm guide, monster manual and the players handbook
Id recommend the starter 3 books so the DMs guide PHB and monser manual
perfect lol
nice
I dont know about you guys but when an encounter has 100hp and they do 90 in a single round I do add an extra little 100 to the thing because 1 round is ridiculous
thats usually how fight goes
unless its an ancient red dragon that oneshots the party
Maybe ill try running a short quest/encountet where i dm and act as a player so i can get the basics down?
dude no kidding I had one player last year oneshot a golem because i gave him overpowered stuff by accident
start small
You could also try a starter kit maybee
oh yea a starter kit is a good idea
Whats that?
I dont know how many there are but I got Stormwreck Isle and it seems pretty good. Gives you premade char sheets, a guide on how to run the game, rulebooks and a dice set
Hm
Lost mine of Phandelver is good for it
you can find them on amazon or at game stores usually if you want a tangibleone
Oh i am legit broke qwq
Yis that one is free on ddb so you could try that QueenMadeleine
Lost mines of Phandelver is free on DnDBeyond
I think theres a couple free ones on DDB
a big +
Lost mines is actually pretty good for new players and DMs
exactly
i feel like dragon of icespire is a bit complicated because of the quests
its not like one storyline
but still good
would definitely recommend ✅
i always reccomend Waterdeep: Dragonheist for new players that are interested in political intruige and noir
another thing is if you are either playing TOM (theatre of mind) or battle map
because many of the game’s mechanics are unusable in TOM
Ooo that sounds fun 👀
it can be a bit overwhelming cause narratively there's a lot of moving parts and hooks for players to grab onto, but if you're up for it it's a great starting experience with dnd that has a little bit of everything

would any other newbies be interested in creating an all newbie campaign?
I basically don't know anything about dnd but I'm still creating a campaign
are you dming?
ok gotcha
Hey guys totally new to D&D, made a character like sometime last year to start a campaign which never happened but find it hard to find somewhere to actually start and learn it, found this discord and love to learn as much as i can and start a campaign 🙂 if anyone had any advice or that please let me know, nice to meet you all
Are you intent on making one yourself? I recommend running a pre-written one first.
i got help from someone who was experienced for there campaign but never used it so its on the D&D Beyond website, if a pre-written is easier first time that's fine i was not 100% sure that's why i thought i would ask
It saves a lot of time and gives you some sense of what a campaign entails. You can access Lost Mine of Phandelver, a level 1-5 adventure, for free by making an account on D&D Beyond. It came with the 2014 Starter Set, so it's designed for newer players and DMs.
i have no idea if i have access to this, i haven't been on the account in a year
It's free for everyone who has an account
If you have an account, you can access it. Or just make a new account.
oh yeah i see it now sorry
Have you checked out any Virtual Tabletops?
Some of them have looking for game resources
nope i am completely new to everything in D&D
So if you are looking for a game you can look in the D&D Games section here (scroll down the channels), or on various Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) such as Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, etc. Some of them have excellent looking for game resources.

Please use the proper channels for advertising games/finding games.
Appologies.

Ty
Also, do u guys hold games here frequently? I figured i should also learn by playing
While we do have game channels, most people don't host their games here. If you look up here, these are the channels we have to help you find games
Ok, tysm for the help 🙏
And to be honest, it can take a while to find a group and start playing. While you are searching I would try to look over the rules and ask questions as needed. Many of us are here to help
It's ok i don't need a group rn
I'm still looking for a group but i did post on the lookinh for dm already ^v^
Did you check #looking-for-players ?

I would also check out Matt Colville’s “Running the Game” YouTube series, the Angry GM’s blog, the Alexandrian’s blog, and Sly Flourish’s book/site/videos.
I would be interested
in organizing some thing in
the near future to do that.
Same. Its usually the best way to actually learn, plus it'll be a fun experience
Altho you should also read the basic rules and learn some basic things for your own gameplay
So I’m extremely new to the game but I know the very basics. Where should I look to find a beginner friendly group where I can start learning as I play.?

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Ok thanks I’ll check them out.!
Think it's named
Hanbbooker Helper
Ding.
I might be mistaken 🤔
Hey, I'm not exactly new but I haven't played dnd for over 23 years. I played 1st, 2nd, 3rd dnd edition throughout the 80s and 90s.
This Friday, I am attending a paid community game for new players 1-4. (As I said first game in 23+ years) The 5e rules are considerably different than I'm used to. It's going to be a steep learning curve.
My social anxiety about dnd still kicks in after all this time. 🤷🏻♂️
It’s a game, so remember to have fun! Not to dismiss any anxiety, of course. Just to contextualize that folks show up to enjoy themselves, so I hope you can do likewise.
I should be okay. I like the current trend of players to enjoy the role playing aspect of the game.
5e is pretty easy compared to 3e
Since I've decided to play again, I've been lurking these types of threads trying to figure out what the social atmosphere is like overall. From what I can tell, folks are lots more patient now. Yea, 3e rules were rough but the characters were seriously op compared to now. Feels more balanced.
correct :)
the magic system is way better
anyway, gotta run. Thx for the greeting. Have a gr8 day.🤜🤛
Why do I have to wait a week to post in #750812887697588356 again
Especially when it dissappears in a day
The bot deletes your post after 7 days
Hey, welcome back to the game. I myself had a 25+ year absence from playing and recently joined a group locally. Don’t worry, it’s really not that hard to pick up the new changes. And if you have a good group of players and a patient DM, you’ll be fine.
Unless someone digs past 100 other people to look specifically for you it just gets buried by everyone else
Once a day would be more fair
May i ask which is a good way to start making my own character? Because i want to see which options in customization i could have to put all my personaility on it
If it's a brand new character I recommend picking your favorite playstyle and wrapping the backstory around it
Unfortunately it would be the same problem this way prevents spamming the channel
Have you looked at the rules at all yet?
Do you know where i could use like a... How is it called... "pre made" type of character's paper
Just to inow how to assimilate
They have some pregenerated character sheets linked there if you want to see how a finished sheet looks/works.
Thanks
I don't knwo why but i am not getting pinged from your repplies
I dont know if its me
.
I don't like pings unless it's an emergency - I think it's a horrible thing that Discord makes pings the default action to replies. So since folks involved in the conversation are already there, I disable them when I respond.
Also for example at the skill points
If i am new it should be like... 20 in total?
There are no skill points in 5E.
Dont worry
My ahdh and asperger already made that a part of life 💀
You may want to read the free basic rules - at least on how to create a character: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Thanks seriously
No problem - and welcome! I hope you find the game fun and enjoyable!
I shall do!!
I mean for the type of DND game that I want to play like Critical Role, Noncore DnD, Homebrew, and so on. So that way can character can used in a scfi specific background. And not in a medieval background.
D&D is more in the style of heroic fantasy very much like lord of the rings. The closest thing we have to Sci fi is spelljammer, and even then it's like pirate ships in space
looking at the players guide and and refers to a sidebar when creating a character what sidbar am i looking for?
You'll have to be more specific.
CREATING A CHARACTER
Use the character creation rules as presented in the Player’s
Handbook (PH), with the following notes. You begin play at
1st level.
Step 1: Choose a Race or Lineage. See the sidebar for
available rules choices. Custom lineages found in Tasha’s
Cauldron of Everything are available.
Step 2: Choose a Class. See the sidebar for available rules
choices.
Step 3: Determine Ability Scores. Your ability scores are
generated using one of the following methods.
• Standard set (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8).
• Variant: Customizing Ability Scores (PH).
tryed using a capture but could paste it
this is copied from the guide
Do you know what page?
1st page on the DDAL players guide
Ah, Adventurer's League runs by a more particular set of rules. You could try #al-admin-questions or #adventurers-league or even #1050206875079155742.
The sidebar is what rulebooks should I use
Hi there, I’m pretty new to dnd as a whole, was just wondering if people play campaigns through messaging? Ik its dumb question but I’m not really open to VC and just want to know so I can look for irl players if not
There are some folks who play by post (messaging)
However, most people play either in person or via some form of virtual tabletop (VTT)
Ah ok thank you
What stat should artificers dump?
Yoorrrr
Dump strength to be the skinny guy using his intelligence to make up for physical inabilty
Dump wisdom for the absent minded professor trope
Dump charisma for the poor social skills nerd trope
I'm confused looking through #750812887697588356 and #looking-for-players Which channel do I go to for getting a dm for my group? The posts in both of the channels seem like a mix of dms and players
#750812887697588356 is where players post who are looking for a dm
#looking-for-players is where dms posts who are looking for players
Ok thank you :)
which subclass of Artificer?
How do you plan on fighting? Melee or Ranged?
Mostly melee but I will use spells too
So, there aren't great melee options for Alchemist unless you spend a feat to grab Shillelagh.
Assuming you do that, I would do the following:
Intelligence, Constitution, Dexterity, Strength, Wisdom, Charisma
Wisdom and Charisma can be swapped if you want to prioritize social over perception/wisdom save
If you decide instead to go ranged, Magic Stone is excellent for that.
With that said, Alchemist is probably the weakest of the Artificer subclasses
I take Shillelagh back, the only way for you to get it, and it to be an Int spell...is via All-Purpose Tool, which isn't a starting ability (it is a magic item)
Doesn't artificer get the ability to do +1 weapons by default?
So really, your best bet is going to be Magic Stone.
What is all purpose tool?
If you mean infusion? Yes, but that doesn't make up for your Strength or Dexterity being not a primary ability for you.
Some Artificer subclasses are good at combat because they use Intelligence for melee and/or ranged combat rather than Strength or Dexterity.
Armorer and Battle Smith for example
both of them use Intelligence instead of Strength or Dexterity for their weapons.
All Purpose tool is a magic item, you won't get it for awhile. But when you do it allows you to use one cantrip from ANY class for 8 hours a day.
