Ty guys
No problem š
What dnd applications does everyone use?
For...?
I use D&D Beyond for character sheets and books, Avrae for dice rolls and combat management, and Owlbear Rodeo for maps.
hi there new here i have been looking at games people have been posting in the looking for players but when ever i try to veiw the submissions page it says i dont have the right role
You should be able to see them right here in Discord.
If not, head into your Discord settings > Text & Images, and make sure Embeds are enabled.
I think it means ācampaign final bossā but what does BBEG stand for?
Big Bad Evil Guy/Gal.
How did that become the widely used term and not something akin to Final Boss?
not trying to make anyone take a super amount of time out of there day but i am new but very interested in trying to get into a game, i have a loose understanding of dand, ive played alot of board games and did a changing breeds campaign from world of darkness(though very homebrew) but it was alot of fun and like to try to play again i just doint know whwere to even start

ok thank you i will
Yo where could i find a DM for a One piece campaign me and my friend wanna run, we have the ideas we just cant run it since we dont have a DM
I suspect that's going to be difficult because you're looking for a homebrew campaign based on an anime series. Even if there is one out there, they may not have any openings.
yea ik ;-; but me and my friend wanna see this campaign through
DMs decide on what the campaign setting is, not the players.
fair enough, we both wanna play and our usual dm want to play this time so we dont have a dm for this
I've never seen One Piece so I have zero interest in a D&D homebrew setting based on it. And even if I was, I don't want to DM to Internet strangers.
DMs are hard to come by as it is so if you want to play this specific setting then someone has to volunteer to be the DM.
yea, and thatd be rare
Plus it isn't even finished, so you don't have the whole picture
fair enough, we have from dressrosa to thriller bark
Do you guys think a player should describe their killing blows?
If so on every enemy or just important ones?
You can always let the player describe the killing blow a la the Matt Mercer "How do you want to do this?" for the killing blow
But would you say that on every enemy or would that loose it's charm that way?
That's based on your table. Not every player wants to describe what their character does.
If it's every 1/8 CR mook, it's probably going to get old fast. If it's more significant enemies, then probably fun
I can confirm. 6 people is the max group size I wanna be in
No clue what ur saying
You took proficiency in deception, a charisma based skill, despite having a negative modifier in the relevant stat
Lol I was confused as well till I read it
Iāll fix it
I have a character that basically casts moon beams from his eyes
Lol owlin Druid order of stars
Ok so what should i take proficiency in?
Anything non charisma based, but its really up to you
Being?
Ok
Why not 20?
Because I played in a group of 13 and I wanted to Kurt go bang myself
Would athletics be dex
No thatās strength
Ok
Thatās hilarious, did you make that up yourself?
Arcana or history
So a sage
I would
Crap i have to rewrite notes
Or go bounty hunter
Where do I find that
Background
Yeah its not there
Itās called ā urban bounty hunter ā I do believe
No
Hmmmm
Its not there
Unless you are looking at the basics hold on
Go spy/ criminal
For your stealth bonus
THATS WHAT IT WAS
BRUH
Rawrš
I DELETED HALF OF MY NOTES
When I make characters I use rpgbot.com
Fair enough
Iāll take slices from there then add flavor
Ok
This is my best flavor character. I normally donāt play melee classes Iām normally spell casting
Well that boy right there is a beefy one
Higher stats on that one, 15 lowest. Real beefy, but still died? I see the failed death rolls.
suggestions for Artificer (creating one)
Lol yeaa I killed him off on purpose
rpgbot.com helps me build characters
i want to learn how@to do it on paper and stuff
i rolled my stats and most them are good
Well it gives you all the stuff but it you wanna do it on paper then youāll need to loo up racial stats in the handbook and stuff
idk why but everything i make has a 9 in strength
hey
thatās racist
:c
?
Artificers use explosives right?
A Dwarven artificer who carries a backpack that 'dwarfs him' to carry explosives sounds funny.
Thatās something I wanna make
Imagining him trying to dig through the backpack makes it all the better.
hello i just got here
Hola
quick question why isnt artificer in the book i hear alot of people talk about it but can only find it on dnd beyond
And you can say for backstory, he was a explosives miner. Who accidentally caused a cave in, killing a few dwarves so he got cast out for like 20 years or whatever for a journey of repentance.
It wasnāt an original class
And a fairy barbarian, is it a really small fairy or not quite a halfling?
ah ok thank you
I might be wrong though
I've seen cases where fairies are like finger sized and others which are like forearm sized
I mean like tiny sized
hm
idk much but
maybe if you strap a firework to a arrow
sorry to jump in on the convo but tiny can range from 2 feet to anything below right? if thats the case a 3 inch fairy shouldnt be able to carry most weapons how should i balance this?
That's what I'm meaning.
A 3 inch fairy can't be anything but a cleric or magic caster
Exactly.. itās a bogus character
smalls cant weild heavys and tinies cant weild normal so it kinda limits fairies to be a monk or bard
Like a Giant rogue
Can't wield anything at 3 inches though... fairies have generally better magic than most races so clerics or magic caster would make sense..
when my characters die in my campaigns i make them reroll races so its a random one (this player used the spell to make him rise as a different race if he died due to wild magic)
Which makes it a bogus character
i think a monk is a funny option tbh
I don't see how a fairy can be a bard when most instruments will still be like 10 inches at least
doesnt have to be instruments
Sure, it's bogus.. but what Weapon could you even wield.
Acapella?
cant it be voice?
Daggers
making your players sing would be kinda funny
Just simply enlarge your hands
tooth picks and lock picks
Then how fly? They'd be some strong wings.
Lol thatās the name of my bugbear barbarian
Just simply donāt fall
I've heard what you meant, I'm not discussing in actuality. Only theoretical.
sup gamers
So question can character things like them being a clown affect a situation?
Yes
Sweet
If you play a character based off a background or something could change party opinion
I use a Reincarnate spell (i made it a d100 with a bunch of cool races and homebrews) and he got a fairy when I died he was a bard level 5 and a monk level 1 and my dm let me keep my levels so im a fairy that has 19 ac due to lucky rolls and the monk ability of wisdom and dex
kinda broken
well not broken but hillarious
but my dm also plays with the rule where if your a tiny race players have disadvantage on ranges weapons when attacking
but also made it so i cant grapple anything thats larger than 1 size larger than you
So I thought of a real stupid gimmick to do with my first character with it being that his whole thing is that he just grabs Random things to attack enemies with.
Depends on race
MOON NIGHT
with the random bull stuff good (idk if cussing is allowed i just got here)
?
I don't like that
can you at least use a hand crossbow
Like if you choose a goblin to start throwing chairs around it wonāt be as good as like a leonin or a bugbear
Ok I was just wondering if you were talking to me, I chose human
Then yea you should be fine
Just make sure to get bonuses in athletics
And I gotta say, I feel like a genius coming up with this gimmick because it gave me the best idea for a background
oh sorry other races have disadvatange on ranged attacks
not races sorry characters enemies and so forth
ok I guess thatmakes sense, lol
Since my character I came up with is a paladin I came up with the genius idea of
Religious clown
Seeeeee now that could roll into some conflict
ima head out fun talking enjoy your nights everyone
Gn
GN
forgot about the no cursing rule
Does anyone know a free pdf editor on pc? Trying to make my character sheet
Ahem, the idea of a traveling circus clown who is also a paladin tickles my brain In just the right way
Beats me
I have the pdfs I'm just looking for a good software to use to edit them instead of printing them out
Upload them into Microsoft word maybe?
Iām not technical enough for that
My saving grace D&D beyond
Adobe Acrobat
There is a free version that should work
Is there a channel that gives me tips on how to be a DM?
Oh I let it put all that in for me
Ah
If it was a snake it wouldāve bit me
Lol look I got 2 brain cells fighting for 3rd place I need all the help I can get
I'm looking at Adobe acrobat, all I'm seeing is free trial for pro edition
Use that free trial then unsubscribe right before it ends
Download Adobe Acrobat Reader
You need to specify Reader I believe to get their free offering
Can reader edit pdfs?
Ah. Okay
Of all the difficult things for getting into dnd, it's getting a pdf editor lol
Lol I just have a dear friend who prints it all for me when I send him the digital one
I couldn't find any pdf editors on my computer, the only thing that popped up was Microsoft edge

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Just making sure I'm getting this right
With a level 1 druid for example, you already know all the 1st level spells, you're just limited to which ones you prepared? I wasn't sure if there was a constraint on how many spells you can know
yes, you can chose from all level 1 druid spells in the game when you prepare your spells after a long rest (with your level 1 Druid)
Alright, thank you
hey, trying to find a group of people to play with but i cant find any, any suggestions on where i can find a group perhaps?
you could ask around in your local game shops if they have a game night or look on reddit - those are two pretty efficient ways you could try!
thank you! ill try on reddit cuz where i live they dont have a clue on what dnd even is š
/lfg is the subreddit name
exactly
roll20.net also has a lot of games
How do I add a roll bot to my DND server?
Well usually the bot you chose to use has a website with instructions on how to install and use it
its all explained on this website
(I wasn't sure if they were using Avrae or some other dice rolling bot)
fair, the way i read it, he hadnt chosen a bot yet, so I linked the most obvious one I could think of
What are you trying to accomplish?

Thx
i have acquired a set of dice today
Then today is a good day š I just acquired a new dice tray
awesome
In addition to the LFG channels here, you can check various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&DBeyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
I just finished my first charecter sheet, and although I have it filled out I am wondering if there's any advice on how to keep it looking clean/as to how I can fit all the information I'll have to put on it eventually. I know it's a silly question, but I figured I'd ask. Organization is important to me.
Is this a physical sheet or digital?
Physical
Maybe check out alternative character sheets? (You can find free ones on DMsGuild and probably elsewhere too.) You might find a design that makes it easier to keep things in their appropriate places.
I used to use physical, but Iāve been playing online exclusively the past few years. Going digital made organizing much easier on that score.
I've been considering going digital after a bit, thank you!
To be clear, I was talking about printing out a different version of the character sheet. If you go entirely digital, I believe your options grow from there. Some folks use tools like Google Docs and Excel to organize character sheet info. Just searching Reddit for āorganize character sheetā turned up a number of promising threads.
Thanks š
There's a ton of jargon and terminology in this game. Here's a good resource: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1026-common-terms-new-dungeons-dragons-players-should
oof
I then proceeded to run them over this morning
Lol no the dice shattered
Well...honestly that's probably better than the alternative. I mean still sucks, but dice are easy to replace. Tires less so
anyone has a good online map maker for a dm?
Lol this was my expensive set
like battle maps
Lol I know this is gonna be strange. But I use an app on steam called talespire. Itās a little expensive but I create interactive battle maps that can have hidden doors and everything.
Lol then roll20 maybe?
like i dont know how to create maps from that like i want from scratch and it sais i need a file
like i dont get roll 20
ok this seems way easier
@woeful mist I have switched to using Dungeon Alchemy For my D&D games and Chronospire for my modern/future games.
Sorry yes Ai driven Map making program
Its pretty killer so far and they are updating it alot. I used it to make mostly all my battle maps and then export as top down. I use FGU for my VTT so it also imports all the line Sight and walls for me.
Darn, where they ornate and expensive dice or just regular or edible?
Orante with little skulls in them
Darn, I can tell you where to find some oogie boogie d6s if it helps.
||Amazon||
Just curious, how does one cheat in this game?
Generally by lying.
yeah people who cheat either hide their dice roll and lie about them or they lie about whats on their sheets
Rolling dice then picking it up really fast and saying something different than what they rolled.
Yeah a lot of the common ones are often immediately obvious.
Had a player that added 1 to everything they rolled. It was almost unnoticed until it wasnāt.
Thatās a sneaky one. Iāve only encountered one or two cheaters at my public games. Often a reminder that theyāre ruining the game for themselves followed by a āhey next time this happens youāre getting the bootā clears it right up.
I am looking to start running an adventures league game at my local artisans guild, any tips on what I can do to set it up smoothly
Establish a code of conduct! Make sure people read and agree to those before they ever sit down with a character sheet.
Thisāll be in a small town so I donāt expect many people to show up, but thatās a good idea to start with.
Ha. Youāll be surprised. We had close to twenty show up when we started ours a few years back.
Offer up one or two DMs and people will show up in droves.
Well Iām gonna be the sole DM most likely. Just looking to set up this as a place to play
Should I provide dice for players that donāt have any? Like maybe offer up a generic set for first time players?
So I want to host my first campaign but my friends don't have characters yet - should I make them character to play or should I help them make their own personalized ones so they know how to create them? I don't really know if they'll like the character they would get and if they are motivated to roleplay them..
and yeah - maybe you'll just get 2-3 sets of pretty cheap dice so you'll be safe
I would make back up characters in case. Like a generic fighter, monk, rogue. Maybe walk them through the creation process
Iāve used the chessex pound of dice for years for this reason. Cheap dice I donāt care about that players return at the end of the session.
I might see if the guild Iām a part of will buy some cheap sets that new players can just take home with them if they want.
Thatās generous of you!
I want people to come back, plus this is going to be part of a community growth project Iām a part of.
Have Session 0 where you all just make characters and if you have time remaining start the campaign
Maybe ask your players which one they prefer. They might be intimidated by character creation, or they may be excited by it.
I find that new players sometimes like being handed a character, it's closer to how rpg videogames are, look at the witcher, mass effect, pretty much every jrpg etc
You're handed a character and the game says you're a super cool monster hunter/space soldier/anime girl, go be that. Even elder scrolls to an extent with you being the prophesied reincarnated god or Dragonborn, even the oblivion MC was foretold to the emperor.
It's easy to roleplay when you know who the character is, and it's hard to think of characters.
That said, some players love making up their own OC (do not steal) and playing as them. So as always communicate first, maybe a mixed solution is better
sure, what do you need help with?

Me to
Hello :)
heys
hi
hello š
hello š
im new to the whole D&D and its beyond my era. in my generation D&D isn't huge unlike FPS or MMORPG but i like trying new things and i hope some of yall could him š
is this gen alpha?
nope Z
I don't believe gen alpha are old enough to have Discord accounts
No, wait the eldest will be able to get them this year. That's only mildly terrifying
Also age/generation is irrelevant to D&D, it's a game enjoyed across what may be the widest range of demographics
i think they would be about 13 or 12 but very young to have discord
yea true
but rare
mostly now gen alpha rather play Br or Fps or popular sandbox games
i actually enjoy mmorpg and i came across D&D ive heard of it but never really understood it and then came across it again
DnD is probably a direct upgrade from MMORPGs and Roguelike games. you know how those games present you with decisions to choose from? imagine that but now there are no specific decisions you have to choose from. you can make your own decisions.
a roguelike gives a choice between 3 things you can say, but in DnD you type in an answer (so to speak), instead of choosing from a list.
hi
Hi, im pretty new to dnd and saving throws still really confuse me. Can someone help me with them a bit?
what's confusing you?
Mostly what stats im supposed to use for all attacks, i only think to use dexterity everywhere because i find it the most fitting,
That depends what weapon you are using. Unless you have a feat or a weapon trait that is letting you, it is strength modifier plus your proficiency bonus to attacks assuming you are using a weapon you are proficient in. In order to use dexterity as a modifier, you would need to have a ranged or finesse weapon
Saving throws are rolls you make to avoid something bad happening to you.
Attack rolls are a different thing.
Generally the effect that causes a saving throw to be made calls out which stat is to be used.
For example, the Charm Person spell says the target needs to make a Wisdom saving throw.
If someone's attacking you with a weapon, typically you don't have to roll anything, they just have to roll against your Armor Class.
Oh, that makes sense now. Damn how did i not get that
I understand attack rolls and armor class.
Thanks everyone
I'm glad someone was able to answer your question š Feel free to ask if anything else comes up
Heyo! Iām not necessarily NEW to D&D, Iāve been playing on and off for about a year, but was thinking of making a new character. Iām having trouble figuring out what class and race to pick, so I kinda just want people to start throwing ideas at me :]
Also, never made a character on my own before, any good resource to help with things like deciding items and dice rolls?
are you doing it digitally or in paper? also, more a discussion for #1045165827068002374
Oh, thank you! Did not see that, Iāll head over there right now :]
HI
What are some ooze related/adjacent spells?
I donāt know what channel this should go in but this one feels alright.
What are you trying to do? You can reflavour spells as long as you donāt change them mechanically or if your a sorcerer you can get the transmuted spell meta magic and change the damage type
Something Homebrew, but this didnāt feel like a āonly Homebrewā question.
I could prob reflavour lots of spells to be ooze related is this for a plasmoid character
Could do a spell similar to the Wand of Viscous globs that does acid damage
but this is likely more a homebrew discussion at this point
Is the Wand of Viscous globs a magic item in the DMās guide?
it is a magic item from the Out of the Abyss adventure
Hmm, can I ask here what it does?
It shoots out sticky gobs of goo
it's viscid, sorry, not viscous. But yeah, it shoots a glob of material that restrains people on a hit
Hmmā¦
Ok so Iām brand new to dnd and I was wondering if I could just make a character that was essentially Ryan Reynolds
What kind of abilities would you expect Ryan Reynolds to have?
not even deadpool, just ryan reynolds
i meaaaan. bard or sorcerer...
Where should I go to look for a group to play online with? Anyone willing to help me learn D&D would be great.

Any idea's for a dnd campain#
LMoP is pretty good.
Samurai fighter with 3 levels in cleric or a ring of regeneration if your campaign is high enough level
When Iām doubt, just rip off your favorite movie.
man, I realized after I introduced a big plot point to players, one that's mostly in lore, that I made lord of the rings.

Hello everyone
Goodbye everyone.
Itās Games workshop all over again....
not really sure what you are referring to, but I have an inkling it belongs more in #ogl-discussion-archive
No was saying that you say hello at games workshop local to me and everyone ignores you because they donāt like newcomers lol how are you anyways
ahhhh, that makes sense
Hehehehehe.
My apologies for the confusion
all good, I'm doing well, hope you are as well
Yeah Iām great thank you
Iām kinda hungry.
Perhaps move this to #non-dnd-topics ?
Iām air frying something currently.
OldManYellingAtClouds is correct, this isn't on-topic for this channel, and all things off topic should be discussed in #non-dnd-topics please
But Iām a newcomer.......or would you propose I would be rude off the bat and constantly ask questions to learn dnd or ale small talk first then simply ask.......where to start ?
True but considering Iāve literally just joined the server didnāt want to be rude....... where do I start then lol
Check the pins for the dnd game rules
And ask any question you like the hive mind of nerds will swarm to your aid
Have the rules changed at all recently ? Iāve bought a rule book online earlier
They haven't changed in the last 9 years
Good stuff, are there newcomer friendly games available here and there ?

Hey quick question is there a newcomers/ new to DND Lfg anywhere?
Not specifically that I'm aware of - here they treat them just as any other individual looking for a game.
Some games might advertise themselves as being new player friendly.
Generally many groups are fine taking on new to D&D players as long as the player has made a good faith effort to read and understand the basic rules or at a minimum understand how their character works. Then just be willing to continue to learn and fit in well with the rest of the group.
So where do DMs look for games then
I'm not exactly smart if it's right in front of me, mb
#looking-for-players is where DM's look for players for their games
#750812887697588356 is where players/groups post that they're looking for DMs
#looking-for-community is where other Discord servers that have online D&D play post.

Hello everyone āŗļø
Hello everyone, I'm a dnd noob and I just wanted to ask about character race movement speeds. Does anyone know if this is true/when it might be implemented? Thanks

thereās a basic rules sourcebook where everything should be explained. idk how to link you to it bc Iām not allowed to send anything yet ^^ but you can probably find a pdf on the internet too

oh thank you!!
I'm looking at hit dice for cleric, what does 1d8 per cleric level mean?
Does it mean that I get 2d8 as a lvl 2?
Itās a pool of self healing you can use on a short rest
Yes, per short rest you can throw however many hit dice you have to recover that amount of hp, so if you are level 5, you have 5 hit dice which you can expend. Eg. I roll my hit dice which is a d8 due to me being a cleric and i get a 5. I recover 5 hp during the short rest.
You can throw multiple hit dice as long as you have them. Eg I throw two d8 and get a 5 and a 8 which means I recover a total of 13 hp. You regain all your hit dice after a long rest
Half your hit dice
hey, which bestiary should i get?
Depends what your after?
Hitdice have 2 uses.
First one is, that you can Roll them in short Rest to regain Hitpoints,
Secoundly, is a creatures Maximum Hitpoints dependent on their hitdice.
At First lvl you allways get max value of hitdice+constitution modifier.
Any lvls you Take after First you either Roll the dice and gain number rolled+Con Mod to your max HP, or you Take average + Con Mod.
Average is Always max Roll divided by 2, plus one
So e.g. a d8 is (8/2)+1 which equals 5
question... does the dm make the map and the players choose which characters they want to play, or do the players choose which characters they want to play and then the dm makes the map for the characters?
i had a pretty neat idea for making a map with.. well, locations that represent their fears, but that'll probably take some time because of the writing of the backstories.. for example, the barbarian has a fear of cats - there would be lots of cats in the town, so the barbarian is overwhelmed while the other pc's are confused what's making him feel scared
typically the latter, but the map doesn't have to be inherently based on characters or vice versa
alright, thank you!
Anyone there
There are presumably people who are dipping in and out of this channel, do you have a question about getting started with D&D?
no
Okay, well that's the purpose of this channel, so you might wanna try a different channel in that case
I don't know, you haven't said what it is you need help with
However, do keep in mind that this channel is for getting started with D&D, so if it's not related to that, you might wanna check out #channel-guide to see what channel would be a better place to ask
What part of it?
Like how to get xp
So basically there are 2 different ways of leveling up
ok
Milestone which is basically your DM deciding when you level up eg. completing a quest etc
and exp way in which you gain a certain amount of exp for monsters you defeat
You get XP by playing the game
or complete quests
Your DM will award it when you overcome challenges
typically XP is awarded for resolving encounters - not all encounters are combat; they can be puzzles, traps, social situations, environmental hazards, or anything that involves decision making and usually dice rolls
I still don't how to get armour level's
Depends on your class.
Different armor will get different AC (armour level)
armor class is determined by equipment, spells, and class features
What if your class is half-elf
If you could tell us what class/race you are, it would be much easier to tell you what you can do
that's a race
That's a race, not a class
class is like wizard, fighter etc
My class is ranger
It may be worth you re-reading the Basic Rules to familiarise yourself with them
What armour do you have?
?
Do you have leather armour?
Or scale mail?
or have you not made the character fully yet?
I haven't made my character fully yet
You should read the basic rules more like Lionn suggested
ok

Hi I'm Back
hi
Hi back I'm dad
A dad? In D&D? Run quickly before you become part of someoneās tragic backstory.
Most dad's are either villains to a party member.
Dead for tragic backstory.
Dead for backatory.
heya people im new here, literally just finished my first character, just wondering if anyone had any tips for where to start? i dont really wanna jump right into someones campaign without knowing the rules and stuff you know?
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05OiKZgfz7hi_Gvw9hftY0LD good playlist of the rules
Thank you
I was also wondering, on my ability score roles, I'm not sure if it's broken or not but my wisdom roll doesn't seem to be right
I rolled a 15 on wisdom, and it says the total Is 1, and I've tried reloading it and stuff but
I donāt recommend rolling your stats until after youāve joined a game. The DM may not even allow for it, and the vast majority that do allow it ask that it be done with them present.
Making a character is a great way to dive in and learn the rules, but itās best to consider it practice until youāre in a game and know what rules your DM chooses to use.
ah okay thank you, i appreciate all the help
anyone able to teach me how to play in a vc? I just started and would like to learn!

āš» New and improved!
ive never played dnd but i got an amazon gift card so i was wondering if i should get into it with my friends (we play a lot of board games)
i was wondering if theres any specific starter pack i should buy
and if i could just keep making up new scenarios with that map and stuff
and does the game cap at 6 people?
thanks
Welcome!
If youāre looking specifically for a starter pack, Dragon of Icespire Peak would be my recommendation.
But you can also get itās predecessor, Lost Mine of Phandelver, for free on D&D Beyond.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
In which case you could look into things like the Playerās Handbook or the Dungeon Masterās Guide instead.
As for the number of players, thereās no real limit, but the game tends to work best with 4-6 players, plus the DM.
Hello
by the way, do i print this stuff out? the free version
i'll most likely get Icespire though
I just use them there on the website, personally.
Icespire wouldnt work with 8 ppl (including the dm) though would it
Youād probably need to adjust some things.
Add extra enemies or buff their health, for example.
But yeah, itās doable.
thanks!
The book itself says this:
You can run Dragon of Icespire Peak for as few as one player or as many as five players. Each player starts with a 1st-level character.
Yeah, you can.
thanks!
Sorry to ask im new to the server and dnd in general and im not sure what to do here

But if youāve got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
I got a taste of what dnd was kinda like thx to my older brother but im just am wondering if theres a way to connect with ppl my actual age
You're certainly not the first person to ask exactly that in this thread. I don't exactly know any surefire methods. I'd start by asking at libraries, at your school and youth groups
The perfect solution is that you know some people that would be willing to give it a go, but I know that is often unrealistic
Im a introvert big time and my friends are the kind of ppl who summon demons not play DND
Summoning demons and playing D&D certainly have some similarities... You could try coning them into a one-shot at your next birthday? Idk, obviously you know them and I don't so use your best judgement
Thx for the advice
I never thought I'd see the day where people feel averse to D&D because it's not demonic enough š
Hi
Hello :)

oh hey thank u!
No problem. The free Basic Rules is a good place to start. Feel free to ask any questions you might have after reading through it š
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Just for you @cobalt frigate they added that to the newcomer guide
Right, I see it now! Thanks!
What is/are class hit die?
They're used primarily to determine your maximum HP.
But they can also be used during a short rest to recover HP.
It's what size die you roll to see how many Hit Points you have. You also roll that size die when using Hit Dice to heal during a Short Rest.
Ohh.
- Hit dice at first level: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#HitPointsandHitDice
- Hit dice at later levels: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ClassFeaturesandHitDice
- Hit dice during rests: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#Resting
Thank you.
What page in the PHB talks about hitting without a weapon?
Or does it not have anything about that?
are you talking about improvised weapons, or unarmed attacks?
This section of the basic rules about Melee Attacks
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MeleeAttacks
Either would be good.
For unarmed, the above link show "Instead of using a weapon to make a melee weapon attack, you can use an unarmed strike: a punch, kick, head-butt, or similar forceful blow (none of which count as weapons). On a hit, an unarmed strike deals bludgeoning damage equal to 1 + your Strength modifier. You are proficient with your unarmed strikes."
Improvised weapons are on 147, the unarmed attacks are on 195
Thank you.

hey
hi
im new to online d&d but i was wondering if someone would like to join a campaign
You can fill out the form in here
Just check the channels listed above.
ok
I'm new and I'm reading about everything, I'm still very lost about some things. If I joined a group and created my character does it have to ONLY be the races offered?
Itās generally only the races the DM allows. Youād need to ask them what sources they allow, and if you want something thatās not published, what homebrew is allowed.
It's very likely you'll be asked to use the existing races so you can get acclimated to the game's rules and sense of balance. Lots of homebrew is just broken, and without the context of how the game plays, it's easy to bring something you don't even realize is skewed.
Hi! I am kinda new to d&d and been wanting to play. But there are no places where I live on where I could find a group. So I thought of searching online.
But I am not sure where I could seek for a group to play with. Could someone guide me to where I could find a group please? And thanks in advance ^^

Hello my friends are german Player Here ?
You can find non-US players around the server, but they're fewer.
does "What style of game does the group play?
Homebrew" mean to join you need a dnd subscription?
Homebrew is fan-created content. Some DMs allow it, some don't. It doesn't have anything to do with D&D Beyond inherently.
Style of game is kind of general: do you like a balance of combat, roleplay, and exploration? Do you prefer one element over the others? Do you like a deadly game? I think ultimately it's a spot for people to express their priorities and preferences.
ah ok
Even on D&D Beyond, you donāt need a subscription to create your own homebrew or share it with your campaign.
Youād only need one if you want to add any of the publicly-available homebrew other users have published.
So I know that for spells like conjure minor elemental the dm chooses what elemental appears, but isnt there anyway you can work around that cause what if your dm just chooses to give you crappy elementals every single time...
Or switch to Summon Elemental.
hello, my friend and I are trying to make character sheets and were confused on some things, would anyone be willing to help us out with creating them?
were super new to dnd
how to do it tbh
i read through the rule book about creating it and i think we have our stats down but were missing things
like experience points and armor class and the weapons
The very first chapter of the free basic rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules) goes over how to create a character - is there any particular step you're having issues with?
experience points and armor class and the weapons
and saving throws we dont understand that
If you're just starting, don't worry about experience points - you earn those as you adventure and deal with encounters.
Armor Class is determined through several methods, the most usual is by wearing armor items. So for example Leather Armor gives you a base 11 armor class plus your character's dexterity modifier.
So if my character has a dexterity modifier of +2 (that would be a dex score of 14-15), then wearing leather armor would make my AC = 13 ( 11 base + 2 from the character's dex modifier)
Saving throws represent your character's ability to withstand/react to particular harmful situations. For example if a fireball goes off and your character is in the area of effect, the DM will ask you to make a dexterity saving throw. You would roll a d20 and add your dexterity saving throw bonus and tell the DM the result. If you passed, the DM would say you only take half damage instead of the full fireball damage.
I'd need more details about what you are struggling with with weapons to answer.
But generally melee weapons use your strength modifier and ranged weapons use your dexterity modifier when rolling to hit (plus you proficiency bonus if you're proficient with that weapon)
this is so cool
do you mind if i send you my character sheet and could you give me feedback on what i have so far?
okay
i can also check it out

I'm trying to make a Charlatan changeling Rogue (Inquisitive) Bard (Eloquence), could this work as a character in gameplay? I have plans for backstory and the like already
No reason why it wouldn't unless your group's setting doesn't really make sense for the changeling race or other factors like that (e.g. table specific).
Check with your DM and group.
Oh, is it common for changelings to be illegal?
Oh
I'll read the stuff on changelings then first
It's not about it being "illegal" as it may not fit the campaign and setting or work well for the type of game the group wants to play. Best to make sure your character concept works well for the type of D&D game you'll be playing and works well for the setting and works well with the group.
Hi
welcome
Hello, and thank you for accepting me to the group. š š š I honestly do not know where to start; Except I have roleplayed table top style D&D a long time ago with my brother, and his friends. But I would like to get back into roleplaying again. I would love to find a D&D group that is around my age group(I am 32.) Where we have a Friday night D&D session, goof around, and what not. š š š That is what I am looking for lol!!! But about me my name is Kat, as I stated I am 32yrs old that is from Nashville, Tennessee(Born and raised.) I love anime, and gaming on my Xbox. If you want to know more feel free to ask.
Oh š š ?

I figured age would be okay especially if you are searching for a D&D group around your age group. š š š š
Probably saying that you're in your 30s or early 30s would be fine
They're probably just primarily trying to minimize any potential risk to minors.
Since this server takes people as young as 13 (Discord's minimum age)
I hope what I've submitted in #750812887697588356 isn't too much.
I just wanted to make sure DM's knew what they were getting themselves into when reading the More Info section.
so with the lfgs, as a lone player should I submit a looking for Player or should I just peruse looking for player/community til something jumps out at me? all my other times playing were invited by line of sight with friends so I have no idea what to approach
Oh shoot, is looking for Dms for players looking for Dms?
Or players looking for Dms?
ty, I was confused by the variety lfgs. I'm used to just lfg +region so I wasn't sure what the different lfgs do even after reading the descriptions
I have been perusing the lf-Players but most of what I scrolled through was high-expectation groups or groups expecting me to be home by like noon every session to play
Okay good, I didn't mess it up then.
I was worried for a second.
I spose I can post to lf-DM. Is lf-Communities for living worlds etc or is it too varied to simplify here?
tyvm I'll keep looking I spose
I've been in groups of friends so far in the past, so I expect it to be weird
Finding a group can take a while ,finding the right group longer sometimes, are you only after online or have you looked for IRL groups too?

the bot messages dont appear
Then check your Discord settings and turn on embeds
Hey, can I make a custom character with a custom background?
I mean D&D Beyond is kinda limited no?
You can make a homebrew background I believe and use that
I dont know what that means š
I am a beginner and trying to see the creation process so me and my friends can make characters without much trouble, however I dont want it to be limited to basic or vanilla stuff
Using 5e classes and stuff like that is nice
There is a customs background option on the character creation on dndbeyond
What about certain races and certain buffs?
You can use DnDBeyonds homebrew tools to create custom/homebrewed backgrounds. That said, if you're beginner, I suggest using the existing backgrounds and reflavor them (change how it feels but don't change the mechanics) to meet your needs.
I recommend staying way from customizing races/features until you have a bit more experience and can better gauge how to balance it within the existing rules and options.
Yes homebrew is "I made it myself/someone made it that's not Wizards of the Coast or 3rd party publisher"
I am not gonna make a God just a variant human or stuff thats balanced
and then I am planning on using the 5e classes sheet to pick a class and background (Sage, dark lord etc)
but I do want to give certain buffs for a character (In a balanced matter)
You and your group can decide whatever you want to do - I'm just recommending using base/vanilla D&D first so you can better understand the game mechanics and can create stuff that balances well with existing rules and options.
Yea thats valid
You can always describe things differently (flavor) but it's best to keep the mechanics intact in my experience.
I got to go but feel free to ask questions - the community here is pretty good about helping out.
Thank you so much ā¤ļø
after making characters and encounters in dnd beyond what then?

Do warlocks have access to fireball at level 3?
No, only 2 Warlocks get Fireball, and they get it at level 5, those are The Fiend and The Genie
just use thermaturgy on a bottle full of gunpowder, you have your own grenade š
Do Warlocks use they're melee attacks?
Only Hexblade Warlocks do melee attacks, usually
All warlocks can do melee attacks. Hexblades just get bonuses to weapons
There's also Pact of the Blade, which any warlock can get.
Ok so warlocks, in battles are sort of battle mages?
Hexblade Warlocks, yes
hey im new to DnD and i would like to join a game / learn how to make my own charecter if necessary
Look at #looking-for-players to find a game as a playier
oh ty'
And a character could be a bit complicated but you'll get the hang of it
IMO, D&D Beyond is the easiest way to make a character. If you click āShow help textā, it will walk you through each step.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
But it really just follows the first few chapters of the Basic Rules, in order.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Best part is, it does all the math for you that might feel to arcane or complicated
Great dndbeyond keeps crashing before i can complete my charecter
is my looking for dm request wrong somehow? The requests below mine are all answered but mine not (mine is 3ish up from the bottom at this time)
It's not a case of right or wrong, simply you may not be what any given DM is looking for at this exact moment
I'm effectively totally new and have weird schedule but otherwise flexible. hm
where would I see your request? I only see what looks like bot messages in looking for dm
That is how that chat works if I understand the lfgs correctly
correct, there is a form submitted through Dymo that formats the request into a standardized look and posts it as a message
pinned message says the bot simplifies and formats the requests better
will need to train my brain to noyt ignore bot looking messages then
Bet, Iāll send it your way whenever I get home
Iām also not sure why I donāt have roles š

Roles are purely aesthetic now (blue for DM, green for player)

hello
im very new to dnd and i just made a warlock character last night but i dont understand how to make a patron
that is up to the DM whether you are making it or they are really. it varies and there aren't really rules for it
You work with your DM on the patron.
thank you very much

ah
I could use a hand. I'm trying o look through the #looking-for-players but when I click on the "view submission", it just tells me "You are not authorized. You do not have the necessary roles to view submissions for this form." What am I doing wrong?
You should be able to see them right here in Discord. If not, head over to #find-a-game and check the FAQ for info on how to enable embeds.
May I ask, what level of weapons can Fairys have proficiency in? I imagine light weapons only?
The Fairy player race?
Yes
Their weapon proficiencies would probably depend on their class more than anything.
the fact that they are tiny means nothing?
Theyāre Small, not Tiny.
Ah.
A Small creature would have disadvantage when trying to use a Heavy weapon.
I am glad you told me
But if they were proficient in that Heavy weapon, their proficiency bonus would still apply.
Yeah, theyāre more Flora/Fauna/Merryweather than Tinkerbell. š
Who?
How do I play
What channel would i post in to get help with a concept for a character?
The dm describes the environment to you, then you describe what you want your character to do, and the dm can have you roll to succeed or not.

And CrazyDave beat me to it! š
So I can play on my phone and do I have to say my character?
You need a character sheet, some understanding of the game rules, some dice (real or digital), and a group to play with.
A phone might be able to help you with that but it's just a tool.
I have a character but when I press it it doesnāt work
Yeah, someone more experienced with online stuff will need to help you.
I have no idea what tool or service you're using - maybe DnDBeyond?
Currently DnDBeyond is experiencing technical issues with character sheets and campaigns so some functionality may not be working correctly right now.
Yes itās that
Yeah so right now DnDBeyond tools are having technical issues so some functionality just may not work right now.
Ok
Hello. I am new and never played before. Very little knowledge coming into it but would love to learn and get started. I had a friend introduce me to DnDBeyond and I created a character but thatās about as far as I have gotten.
The best start is to read the basic rules of the game first to get a basic understanding of how to play and then look for a game :)
We have a bunch of helpfull links in the pinned messages in this channel as well for beginners.

Disney characters
Fairies of varying sizes
(Does not include the Medium-sized Fairy Godmother.)
Ok if admantine armor turns a crit hit into a normal hit wouldn't that make every attack fail or does it hit but u don't get the benifits of a crit hit but instead get a normal hit
Itās still hits but you donāt double the damage dice
While you're wearing it, any critical hit against you becomes a normal hit.
So no more nat 20s
Ok next question so if i had cover which halves the damage and resistance with that type of damage do i just get one forth or does it only half the damage
Cover primarily increases your AC, making you harder to hit. If you do get hit, that cover does not change the amount of damage received.
But generally speaking, resistance wonāt stack with other sources of resistance, but it will stack with anything not called resistance that still halves damage (for 1/4 damage total).
Like Resistance + Uncanny Dodge, for example.
For reference:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#Cover
Half Cover
A target with half cover has a +2 bonus to AC and Dexterity saving throws. A target has half cover if an obstacle blocks at least half of its body. The obstacle might be a low wall, a large piece of furniture, a narrow tree trunk, or a creature, whether that creature is an enemy or a friend.Three-Quarters Cover
A target with three-quarters cover has a +5 bonus to AC and Dexterity saving throws. A target has three-quarters cover if about three-quarters of it is covered by an obstacle. The obstacle might be a portcullis, an arrow slit, or a thick tree trunk.Total Cover
A target with total cover can't be targeted directly by an attack or a spell, although some spells can reach such a target by including it in an area of effect. A target has total cover if it is completely concealed by an obstacle.
Ok thats good to know
Is a big sheild considered cover ?
A shield grants +2 to AC, that's all.
There are no tower shields in 5E.
Oh maybe they'll come out in dnd 6e
Possible, but 5e has opted for streamlining design elements; I suspect that'll continue with the next iteration.
I doubt it. 5E was all about simplification of the rules. 6E will continue down that path.
If you want more crunchiness and detail, check out 3.5E then.

I really wanna play but I donāt wanna get something wrong because I didnāt read the rules properly
You don't have to know everything but knowing how to make attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks is kind of important.
Then after that, the next thing is to find a group to join and play with.
I have no idea what that is
What chapter is it on

Iām not sure how any of this works too well. How exactly do I, or more so, how should I go about building a character for myself to play?
Alrighty, thanks
Also, what exactly does home brew mean? From what I can tell itās like a self made thing
Is there anything I should reference if Iām interested in making one?
Learn to crawl before you run.
Mmm alrighty
Hi Iām really new to DND, Iāve only really done a one off, so Iām looking for a possible group to join
Hello everyone. I've recently purchased the storm wreck isle starter set. My son and I have been working to understand and I think we got the basics down. I'm considering playing some online campaigns and would like some info on where to begin. Thx all

Yea I was reading those. Really unsure how it's done. Is it all done using an app or is it video using my dice and character sheets? I know these are dumb questions but I wanna be prepared with appropriate stuff before I look for an game
Vtt... that an app?
Yes, it's software.
Roll20, owlbear.rodeo, Foundry, and FantasyGrounds are popular VTTs.
Ok ok
I been seeing alot of the roll20 and owl bear. Had no clue what they meant
Gotcha. So if I'm using a tablet, what should I limit myself to?
Well, it depends on what the DM uses.
Ok. So apparently my phone is to old for owlbear rodeo. It dont show in the store
Oh a website ok
Simplifies things
Hello
hi
Comming back to DnD is good tbh
im writing my first story !š
Nice
So I'm new to dnd along with my cousins, and I've been assigned DM, how do I know if dice rolls are successful or failed?
Hi how is everyone doing
I know most of the basics, been reading through guides. But I don't understand how to determine what happens after checks.
Not a new new player but this will be my first time playing a rogue, any tips for me?
Avoid antagonizing other player characters - be part of the team.
Mechanically use your skills to help out - and make use of your sneak attack feature.
This may sound bad but I play bard and I'm wondering how to make a good bard character that is a good help for the team
So how do I find campaigns in this server?

You can get more specific answers in #1045165827068002374. My advice would be to pick spells that help your partyābuffs, debuffs, healing, and/or making enemies lose a turn.
hi im new to dnd i want to play some games online. i dont really know where to start,..
Hi guys, i have a problem with newsletter, can u said to me who i can ask for try to understand how solve this problem?
What newsletter?
There isn't a D&D Beyond newsletter
There are email updates for new releases and sales, and articles on the front page, but no newsletter
There's no need to be rude, and that doesn't appear to be the right channel based on the fact they didn't mention D&D Beyond
So we'll let them clarify what they mean
Ty for all the help people give in this channel, it's awesome š
Hello all. New here. Nice to meet you all!

If you have a character and know the rules, the next step would be to find a group.

Ok I finally got the player handbook on dnd beyond and honestly I really like all the creative options available!
just out of curiosity whats so bad abt the kensai monk it sounds good on paper why do ppl hate it so much ?
The Agile Parry feature requires you to not use your kensei weapon on one of your action attacks, which is quite backward when you consider you've taken this subclass so you can use your kensai weapon
Additionallly, all monks can now use kensai weapons using the optional Dedicated Weapon feature from TCoE so long as they can find a way to get proficiency
All this being said, there are still some really great builds you can do with the subclass, the Gunk for example (gun wielding monk) uses kensai and is quite good.
Hey I'm new to D&D and would like to eventually join a group of people here on a campaign. What do I need to do to get started?

You need to know the rules and how to make a character. The above links can help with all of that, and we can answer specific questions.
Thanks, I'll start taking a look at those
Oh ok anther quastion it says i can replace the damage with my martial arts die and some weapons deal 2 dices does that mean that the damage is increased to a 2d10 or is the damage just 1d10
Good question
Ultimately the effect that the monk's martial arts die has on weapons that deal 2d6 damage is inconsequential.
As a kensei monk, you can use a weapon as a monk weapon, if the weapon meets this criteria:
Each of these weapons can be any simple or martial weapon that lacks the **heavy **and special properties. The longbow is also a valid choice.
Unfortunately for monks globally, the two weapons that deal 2d6, the greatsword and maul, are both **heavy **weapons, and thus cannot be used as a monk weapon by you.
