I do not know. I assume you could, but I'm new to this
Sorry, I'm not looking for an english group right now
okie dokie, no problem
ive looked around the server and there apears to be afew other languaged individuals, or atleast multi language
try again tomorrow, you might have better luck at a different time when there's more people on
in darkness, how does perception change?
Disadvantage in dim light
Automatically fail ability checks based on sight in darkness
does passive perception get lowered in dim light or darkness?
Any ability check you have disadvantage, the passive version gets -5
And +5 for advantage
I am looking for a group. I should be considered a new player however. I played 25 years ago in second edition for a handful of campaigns. Looking for laid back 18 plus. Willing to learn

Hey, I about one week time I will be dm'ing my first ever D&D game with two friends, I have the first part of my very own campaign ready (very flexible, so I can easily adapt to unexpected behaviour, I heard this is important). I have bought the Player's Handbook, Dungeon master's guide and the Monster Manual. I am currently reading through the player's handbook to learn more. Anything else i can do to prepare?
awesome!
I would say you're off to a good start. Read up on the monsters you want to use and consider ways that things could go off the rails and what you'll do when they do.
Thanks, I am a bit scared because I know my friends. They are quite unpredictable at times 😆 so I don't really know how I can properly prepare the campaign
Been DMing 28 years. The truth is you can't. The best thing a DM can do is to have a few possibilities lined up, ways to either get things back on track or simply be ready to take things in a different direction.
I guess my best bet is to plan out what other physical directions the adventurers could go in, like create some more settlements in my world and some interesting landmarks and encounters
yep, fleshing out the world a bit is a good idea. One trick you can use is that if they leave an area before you introduce a particular plotline, you can always introduce that plot later
Example: You want them to be hired to look for missing caravans and you know where they're supposed to go to do so, but they pick a fight with the town guard and get run out of town before you have the chance to have them hired. You can introduce the plot next town they go to instead.
A good principle is to prepare characters and situations, not plots. If you try to write a linear story, eventually your characters' decisions will stray off course and you'll be off script.
But if you focus on things like "this important NPC wants X, so they'll do Y, which if the PCs don't get involved will accomplish Z" then you can adjust their behavior and what happens based on understanding how they think
A lot of DMing is improv and being willing to build on what your players are doing and vice versa
that's the sort of thing I've been doing in my Monday game which is very sandboxy
Have you held a session zero?
It definitely helps for a sandboxy game, although I think it's useful for a more plot-driven one too. Like, say you have a mystery plot with a serial killer -- you want to think about how you're going to lay out clues, what will happen if they don't actually find any of the clues, what will happen if they say "forget the mystery, let's go shopping" and the killer strikes again. Maybe there are certain pieces of information they can't miss, maybe there are consequences to people knowing there's a killer on the loose
and you don't have to script these things out exactly because there's a good chance they won't come up, but having a sort of "doomsday clock" of advancing threats can make even a plot with one single antagonist feel much more alive and complex
HEY IM NEW🤨🤨
Oh, absolutely nod
welcome 🙂
New to dnd I got the starter set and essentials kit what should I buy next
I would say the player's handbook is a good next step
that is more than enough for your first game.
I got like 200 bucks spending range so what should I go for
I’m a collection hoarder I want all I can
I’ll be going Wednesday to learn to play at a game store but want to come home and teach family
Players Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guidebook are usually the first big 3 books.
Then I'd follow that up with Xanathar's and Tasha's for additional player options and other rules to enhance your gameplay.
Does anyone know where to find this? (please reply so I see it) https://gyazo.com/61b217e0b56c74919429e77cf5ebd66a
Hi... um im new and looking for ppl to teach me to play....
I suggest taking a look at the pinned message here in this channel - it has lots of good links and resources to help get you started.
Then I suggest looking up "D&D streams/liveplay" and see how people play the game.
Then find a group to play with - no better way to learn then by doing.
That said - do take a look through the free basic rules so you have at least a basic understanding of the general game mechanics.
ok, thank you
Welcome. I'm new too. I found a few friends last night on here. We made a private group chat to get a campaign together. Still don't have a DM tho :/
My group of friends and I are looking for a DM, We became friends last night on here and made a private server to get together for a campaign
do you think i could join this campain... if not thats fine, i just want to learn since my freinds asked me to join theirs and they arent meeting for a while
We would love to have another member. I was awkwardly asking you to join 😅
I'm gonna friend request you then I'll add you into the group
ok thank you
Is there a cleric subclass similar to the Great Old One warlork subclass?
warlork? Is that like an orcish warlock? :p (I'm sorry)
Let me check
Doesn't seem to be a real equivalent, but you might consider talking about reflavoring arcane or knowledge ('Things mortals were not meant to know')
Should be easy, already have examples for the spell list.

my usual advice (though this is purely my personal taste and opinion) is that you should look for a game first as some people might have different rules for making characters. Best to know what kind of game you're joining first
Hi. I'm new to DND and I'm trying to fill out my first character sheet, I was looking through the classes and races from an article I found, can I be a changeling bard? Or is there a restriction on the races I can use for a level one character?
there is not 🙂 use any race/class combo that your DM will allow
In previous editions there were often rules for what races could be what class, but that hasn't been a thing for a long time now
there is no restriction on race+class in the rules, except for one barbarian subclass that can only be taken by dwarves.
nod this is part of why I always recommend finding a game before making a character.
I think its totally fine to make characters as practise though, so you get to know the process better
just dont get too attached to specifics
It's just a beginning character to mess around and practice making them so I can get better
I won't get to attached
nod true
Evening, Would it be a good idea to watch some D&D games online to see what to do?
We have a set of links to help you get started, you can find them pinned in this channel.
Ah, thank you
Yep 🙂 a lot of people start that way
Are there any resources that can help me learn more about everything?
its not a bad idea to watch live plays to get a feel on how the game is played in general, but it wont teach you the rules fully and it might set up unreasonable expectations for your groups so be careful there

Is there a maximum stat count a level 1 can have?
Yes, but I mean as in can you only have 50 total stats across all ability scores?
each score can have a maximun of 20 and a minimum of 3, can't get higher or lower than that without magic items or spells.
the Standard Array is a total of 72 points after combining all the scores' numbers. that is the ultimate average for a character
so if I got a high roll on strength I wouldn't have to lower another stat to balance them?
if rolling for stats. you just take the rolls. no lowering or increasing them. (other than racial ability score bonuses which apply right after)
let me grab an example
Stat 1: 4d6kh3 (3, 6, 1, 2) = 11
Stat 2: 4d6kh3 (6, 4, 6, 1) = 16
Stat 3: 4d6kh3 (3, 4, 1, 1) = 8
Stat 4: 4d6kh3 (3, 6, 2, 5) = 14
Stat 5: 4d6kh3 (2, 2, 4, 2) = 8
Stat 6: 4d6kh3 (4, 5, 6, 6) = 17
Total = 74
i just rolled these.
i do not change them. i just assign them to my 6 different ability scores as i please. then apply racial score increases
(this is the standard method when rolling. the DM might have other houserules. but this is generally how it is.)
Alright then
I just got really lucky on my rolls due to 18s in str and con post racial and wanted to know if I had to lower something due to it
That's fine
yeah
but I guess it's just statistics and luck
Do know that some DMs will require you to generate your character stats in front of the group (and possibly with whatever house rules the group is using).
Alright
nod I started doing that after a player came to me with a sheet that was literally all 18s that he said he just rolled
I let him play it because I wasn't going to call my friend a liar...but the next time we made characters I made it known that (purely coincidentally of course) everyone was going to roll in front of me
in my games i have a simple houserule. every player rolls stats twice, we delete the highest and the lowest total rolls. and then each player picks a stat array out of the remaining ones
Yeah, I'll admit that I manually did my wisdom int and charisma because I thought getting that lucky on the first 3 rolls would be too powerful, but I'm probably going to redo them.
Just got my first set of dice and the dnd Essentials kit

Hey I have a few character creation questions
So I am making a character for a lvl 20 game, he is a Wildfire Druid/Rune Knight Fighter. My dilemma is at 9th lvl druid I get 2 class spells but at 12th lvl fighter I can get a feat (3 total)
What would be more beneficial?
The feats I was looking at were Warcaster, Great Weapon Master, and Martial Adept
Then the spells are Flame Strike and Mass Cure Wounds
Then because I'm sort of new to druid and I don't know what is good, what spells should I take?
You might want to check in at #1045166392174972938
oh okay, I'll just put it there

Hey, I have a question about how damage is calculated, is it just the weapon the player uses that calculates damage? if so, when they level up do they keep doing the same amount of damage until they get a better weapon?
(Let me know if there is a different channel I should ask in)
It's your weapon's damage, plus either your strength or dexterity modifier depending on if the weapon is ranged or melee (Strength for melee, dexterity for ranged and finesse weapons)
Weapon damage generally doesn't increase except when your ability modifier(usually Strength or Dexterity, depending on the weapon) increases. Weapon-focused or "martial" classes initially scale their damage by granting you the ability to attack twice a turn(usually at Level 5) instead of once. Later on their attack power can get boosted in other ways. Fighters get a 3rd and eventually 4th attack per turn. Paladins eventually get to add 1d8 of radiant damage to every melee attack. Each class gets more powerful in their own way. Some focus on dealing more damage, others on defense or control, there are choices for lots of playstyles.
Is there a way to/How does Monster Challange Rating equate to Player Level?
The IDEA is that a monster is supposed to be a fair challenge for a group of 4-5 players of a level equivalent to its CR. But the CR system often doesn't work terribly well and a lot depends on the capabilities and resources of the group
So for the most part CR equal PC group level average?
I mean the idea is that PCs should be fighting monsters approximately equal to their CR. A CR 5 monster is about a good challenge for a group of level 5 PCs
Ideally at least
So what about monsters with past 20 CR?
they're meant to be an incredible challenge. Now...a party CAN beat a higher CR monster. Often 'boss' encounters are a CR or two above the party
Doesn't it go up to 30 though?
Ok what’s a good website to read up on this and like research the game and rules. I’m new I’ve been in one game that didn’t last all that long. It didn’t rlly help.
it might? Such beings generally aren't meant to be fight-able though, or only under special circumstances. They're mostly there for completion

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.

Basically everything 💀 I don't even know how it's an rpg
What is the official site for the game? Where can i download? it?
D&D is the grandfather of role playing games
Oh I read that one 😭
There are hundreds of them
You just need the Basic Rules.
Basic Rules PDF
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf
You don't get it, I am reading but I have no idea what they stand for..
But people can play it online as well?
Yes. As most people had during the pandemic.
- Basic Rules.
- Character sheet.
- Other players.
- Dice (physical or digital)
- Your imagination
- Snacks
So there isn't a set material for this game?
D&D can be as minimum as I listed above or as extravagant with thousands of dollars in miniatures.
Snack are a must-have for a dnd session
I can't upload pictures 💀💀
I found this website Roll20? Official licensed version of dnd it says
"Start playing now" 💀
Roll20 is a virtual tabletop (VTT).
Literally what I need okay
You should read the Basic Rules first to see if you actually want to play the game.
Who is my dm? 😭😭
Get your beginner's driver's license first before you go car shopping.
Dungeon master yea I know 💀
What's the difference between roll 20 and DDB
Videos are the reason why I'm here, sobbing
Roll20 is a VTT.
D&D Beyond is a digital character sheet and digital book compendium.
Which videos?
Is one better than the other?
"What is dnd?" Videos
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
What is a table top
It is literally a tabletop.
Then why do I see more DDB than roll 20
People played at a table.
Because people use DDB for their character sheets. It does all the math for you so it's very easy to create characters.
DDB is that hashtag on Twitter yes?
DDB is the acronym for D&D Beyond
Clearing up some off topic messages 🧹
So is Player's Handbook enough for a new starter? No tabletop experience no rpg experience and never heard of dnd before
You don't even need the players handbook, the Basic Rules is enough (and free)
It also includes information from both the players handbook and the dungeon masters guide
If however you're going to spend money, I'd recommend the Starter Set as it includes a print version of the basic rules, character sheets, and an adventure
the Basic Rules are a good start. there's also the Starter Set which is a box with a copy of the basic rules, dice, sheets to write your character stats on, and a cool little adventure
I couldn't find the Starter Set on Amazon and my local stores are not selling it, could you guys provide a link please?
https://www.miniaturemarket.com/woca9216.html
This is the original Starter Set
This is a newer edition with a different adventure
Your local store should be able to order you a starter set if you ask them
this is a book? isnt it?
i assume that this is pure sarcasm
You can also find everything in there online except the pencils and dice, if you want to save money. Including print out character sheets and the adventure
but it says Starter Set.... complete with dice
How is that sarcasm, any local games store should be able to order in DnD products
It looks like a book, but it says it includes the dice and sheets
Also no, that's not sarcasm, I used to work at a game store and if someone wanted a specific item we could just ask for one and have it in stock in a week or two
im sure solid materials will do it for me, ty!
mine says ''we dont sell this product anymore'' also i just realized that it (the starter set on amazon) was actually the set my bad!
Funny. I was about to use the same reply as you and be called sarcastic
Well that sucks lol
The original may be out of print and unavailable to order but they just put out that new edition I linked
sorry, didnt look close enough and what do you mean by being called sarcastic?
how do i join a group?
thank you very much!!
I think the newer Set would work as well
i have the template but where do i submit
i guess so, ty
So the template is your character sheet yes?
Not sure where you are in the world ( don’t tell and dox yourself) but if US target GameStop would have copies of starter sets, If UK game, or a local game store which you can find using https://locator.wizards.com/
probably? lmao
i would prefer online groups
dox myself? what does that mean?
It means to disclose personal information that could lead to random people online finding you in real life
Dox is a contraction of "documents", as in people would have 'personal documents' released about them that discloses their location
Basically "be sensible online" is the advice
Here #looking-for-players
also im sure its my country that holds me back lol
i tried that and the dm chat but im not allowed to post
?looking
yea i am being sensible, ty

There's something we refer to as "session zero", it's a session before the game itself starts where you establish any house rules and expectations (including behavioral ones). During that we recommend creating the characters too, and working with each other, including the player who is the DM, on it. You can work on backstory at that time too.
I mean, how should I decide what spells to start with?
Are you the DM or the player playing the Wizard?
DM
I have played before
I know a lot about paladins and fighters, just not any sorcerers
Then it's up to the player to decide what spells they want. If you're all new I'd setup a rule during your session 0 that they can change the spells they've chosen for a number of sessions, whether it's after the first one only or give them a few.
How many spell should I start with? because I don’t want to give them so many spells at the start.
the wizard player can chose 6 level 1 spells to put in their spellbook
they can chose those 6 spells freely from the whole wizard spell list
Thx so much
Which just the Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spells#WizardSpells
yeah, additional sourcebooks often add more spells to spell lists. As a DM, you can allow which source books beyond the basic rules you want to include in your game
Should I also recommend cantrips?
If they want recommendations though, Detect Magic, Find Familiar, Mage Armor, and Magic Missile are pretty good suggestions, as are Burning Hands and maybe Sleep or Thunderwave.
you can recommend cantrips and spells if you want.
Sorry, but how does magicka work?
I tend to enjoy Light, Message, and Mage Hand for the three cantrips without knowing more about the playstyle and adventure of the table.
at level 1, a wizard knows 3 cantrips https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Cantrips6
Magicka I might not be the right term but how does it work?
you really should give the whole basic rules a read if you wanna DM
Ok
no damage cantrips?
i would probably give at least one
I've found that for new players and a new DM, it doesn't come up that often.
More experienced people who know what a boon a short rest can be, yeah, but you probably have a good idea of how your characters will interact by then.
Hey, if I'm looking for a DM to host a game for a group of rookies then would my best bet be the looking for players chat?
I think so.
Thank
How do wizards gain spells along the campaign?
its all in the rules that were linked to you
All I found was a giant list of spells
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#LearningSpellsof1stLevelandHigher
this is a slightly different part of the chapter on cantrips that I linked you
the whole chapter explains how a wizard works
It’s in the wizard section, but the general gist is that they start with 6 in their book, gain two more per level, and can scribe spell scrolls in to their book (provided they pay the cost, time, and arcana rolls.)
Then they can prepare a number of those spells in the book per day based on your INT mod and wizard level.
No, that's way more complicated and not something I'd recommend at all.
Start at level 1.
That’s a solid couple of sessions for sure. A good goal for a first campaign.
Tho if you’ve not run any games I’d recommend a one-shot first just so y’all can have a more manageable story and goal.
What do I need to start?
I'd read through the information provided in the pinned links here.
hey im like brand new to all this dnd stuff where would i get started finding a campaign

Is there an original source for all of the abbreviations and terms and their meanings?
There’s a sampling in #frequently-asked-questions, but I don’t think there’s an overall index.
Thanks!
I need some serious help
Basically I have a friend who is really into DnD and they have asked me to play with them
But I can not understand this game at all
I have kinda read through the rules but it is frying my brain 😭
Can anyone help me, I really want to get into this game
How does multiclassing work? Are you able to go up to lvl 20 on two or is that up to the DM?
Take it slow, work with your friend.
Do you have specific questions to ask?
Its a bit complex so id say look up a guide, but in general your lebel is a total, so you cant have 2 level 20 multiclasses
You can have a combined level of 20
In regards to understanding what dnd is about and how to play it, i think a certain amount of experiencing it is neccessary.
But in general, if you have questions about certain mechanics in happy to help. If you have questions about making a character sheet im willing to assist with that too
Where do I go to find a DM to join?
Thank you will look into the stuff you have mentioned and get back to you
We have lfg channels in this discord to find folks

It definitely has a learning curve, and you really have to start from the most basic concepts to understand the more complicated stuff.
Have you ever watched people play the game?
Yeah have watched a few live streams but just don't understand it
Well at the most basic level you're making up a character, putting them into a story, and describing what they do.
Then when your character does something with a risk of failure, you roll dice, to see if they have good luck and succeed or if they fail
The DM acts as all the other characters and the environment, so they decide what number you have to match or beat on the die. If you're trying to jump from one steep ledge to another, they might call that a 12 on difficulty, so you'd have to roll a 12 or higher on the dice
Does all that make sense?
try the handbooker helper videos on youtube
New players seem greatly disadvantaged in being accepted to a game without experience. What's a good way to get some entry level exp?
I would be happy just observing at this point to get a better idea of game play
I think you are right Alf
Thats not 100% true, it just depends on the dm.
Many dms are welcoming of new players and some even prefer them. It can be hard at first but applying as a player instead of trying to fit into a table helps
If you absolutely cannot find a game, seeing if any ALs are in your area and going to those can help you get a hand on it
I live in a remote location, so been fascinated with the idea of online play, but am willing to travel for some exp. Just seems like a lot of new players relpying to looking for posts as soon as they drop. But was hoping to find something broader for first-timers to join in on, maybe I can find that wit AL
It can be tough to find a game for anyone i think, but if you advertise yourself as a new player looking for a friendly an willing game where you can learn youll probably get some hits
As a new player on their first campaign and with 6 players total.
What difference does the player count impact the game?
Can two or even ONE still produce a fun game session?
If so how hard is it to balance due to less party members?
AL is a bit less consistent imo, but is a good way to get exp, and some groups are fantastic
It impacts combat. Everyone gets a turn. The DM will send more at a large group. It’s harder for a large group to sneak around.
Watch videos/streams of people playing the game. Read the basic rules and have some familiarity of how a character sheet works (does not need to be perfect, but understanding how to make an attack roll, saving throw, and do a skill check is important in the game). Then just be a chill person and show you can get along with folks, post in the #looking-for channels (or really respond to a #looking-for-players posting), and even check elsewhere - Facebook, Reddit /lfg, Demiplane, Roll20, etc. And eventually you'll find the right group.
Also make sure it really is the right group - no D&D is better than bad D&D.
So this is a bit of a deep discussion.
You could play with just one player but thats difficult. 2 is possible but i find 3 players the best low player count.
It affects a lot though, more characters means more bodies for combat which influences fight difficulty, it means more proficiencies which means more paths open up via skills. It means more voices, which can change roleplay. More languages to open up other paths with different races. Basically any effect one character can have on the game is multiplied with more of them, and specializing becomes possible rather than being jack of all trades characters. It opens more story routes, combat routes, options in general. To many players muddles the table, slowing things down and sometimes folks lose their chance to voice at larger tables.
Ok
Ive done 1 on 1s with my gf before but ive always run multiple characters when we do, and im very good at roleplay.
But its always more fun to share with a table. 2 players can work just fine, but you end up missing some stuff
3 is great if you want a small focused group, and the dm can always run a companion or two if the group ends up weak in a spot.
Ok that sounds neat
It's just I don't really know
Where would you say the threshold for having too MANY players lies?
I cant imagine wanting to run more than 5 players at a time, but for those patient enough probably around 7 or 8
Generally the D&D written adventures tend to be for parties of 4-6 players.
Too many players? Really depends on the group dynamics and DM skill but 10 players or so gets complicated.
hi, i don't really know what to do, but i've been really intrested in d&d and had mought my first d&d starter kit, but i have no one who wants to play with me, and i don't really know what to do, if i could just join a campaighn, that would be amazing.
I think critical role drifts between 5 and 7 and they can get pretty muddled when planning stuff
Theres some looking channels in this discord
I had a table in college. Got to big. 7 players would mow down monsters. Had to throw dragons at them. It got out of hand.
?looking
what one would you recommend?
Ah man the bot is slow again
Do you think that there can be more than 7 characters ina campaign that all equally contribute and play a huge role in both combat and role-playing?
Yeah thats anothet detail, a cr8 is pretty good for 4 level 8s. 7 level 8s? Not so much
Try #looking-for-players - that's where DM's are looking for players for their games
thank you!
No, not without a lot of combat planning, and even then youre really struggling without something like a talking stick or very mature table.
Once you get past 5 to 6, things get harder to balance combat wise due to how action economy works, youll 1 round a lot of stuff if its not planned and done well, and people will naturally get drowned out by more outgoing players.
Your sessions will be longer but get less done, and theres bound to be a ton of crossover in character strengths unless they plan their sheets together.
Youll find a lot of trouble running bigger campaigns. Itd be easier to have them drop in drop out, or fashion some sort of dual adventure setup where 4x go one path and the others go the other path and its a work together kinda deal, but thatd take a highly skilled dm and a lot of planning just to write in a fun way.
If you have a bunch of friends who want to run maybe divide it up into 2 seperate campaigns? They could be interlinked and you could have crossover episodes and stuff. I dunno, might be cool
Yeah its just we are all 6 players (first time) and also have our dm (first time)
I was a little worried that the amount of players we had prohibited him being able to get everyone at the table to progress through the campaign.
And we usually finish combat after 2 rounds meaning a few people get left out from either having low initative and or not being well designed for a very very short combat.
6 players isnt to much imo
Maybe discuss with your dm to make combat harder
Even at my gfs table tho, sometimes she throws a bunch of smalls out for a fast encounter and my sorcerer just ohkos everything. It happens.
I think with 6 players the table needs to respect their partners time, but theres no reason a dm with some practice couldnt do it
I would definitely talk to your dm in a friendly manner and maybe ask the table if theyd like combat to be harder so everyone gets turns.
If people are making the story go slow, maybe bring that up too in a friendly way.
Dming is hard, every player wants something different and every table needs to be catered to properly, on top of just needing to balance and make a campaign thats fun normally
Im sure theyd understand as long as you the player do
Hello y'all, do you know a way to play dnd online? Cuz I want to start, but I don't think anyone in my area plays it. Or if there is like a website to find open groups or something. That would be really nice
Yepp! Theres a couple ways to play it too
Are any one shot same day adventures that occure regularly?
Man is the bot still being slow?
I know off hand of roll20 and just a discord call.
Maybe but likely not announced via the #looking-for channels as the channels only allow one post every 7 days.
Maybe try the #looking-for-community channel as those are advertising other Discord servers/communities that may have more frequent pickup D&D games.
As far as playing online, all you really need is some way of communicating with the group - can play by email (slower-paced games but can be very RP heavy as you have more time to think and write out your character's actions), Discord, Skype, Slack, Teams, Zoom, etc.
I personally run my campaign via Discord with Avrae bot to help with dice rolls and rule lookups.
Any tips on how to convert a town into a religion? Thanks
lots of charisma and torture
So far got 14 charisma as a lv3 warlock so just been trying to make ppl join by being nice but I do plan on either convincing a shrine maiden to either convert or somehow kill her without the towns ppl protesting
1 way is to break her spirit and beliefs another is to setup a quest only she could complete and then ambush her the final way i can think of is mind control/hypnosis and brain washing
You really like tourture huh
ofc
If you're a good/neutral character and don't do torture (because no one non-evil should) then probably helping out in the community. Find a way to apply the message of your deity to the daily life of the people.
Yeah I'm chaotic neutral and so far I have been spending days helping farmers speaking with them and trying to get them to join and got s nat 20 so decent amount liked what I was selling and I'm just trying to make my self as liked as possible so that I could either A. Somehow kick out the shrine maiden B. Become the townmaster and lower her influence and shrine or C. Just kill her quietly somehow even if I were the prime suspect
In Forgotten Realms the most reliable way is probably to set up and provide services. Healing, blessing, whatever niche you can find that your spell list fits. And if you can't do that then grift people into buying cheap holy symbols.
Hmm...is there any particular reason why you can't both live there? Let the people decide? I'm just saying that if you kill her and she suddenly vanishes you'll be the prime suspect
If you're trying to convert or drive out a priestess? You can always have an old-fashioned miracle contest.
Hm true I could just leave her be but I would imagine that getting rid of the only competition would improve the rate / amount of towns ppl who would join
Get everyone in the public square, see whose religion empowers who to do cooler stuff
Well so far my patron god litteraly just became able to share it's powers to me so it won't be able to do much lol
Even if she doesn't convert the town will see you have more to offer.
Think for now I'm going just try to convince her to join
Oh well time to fake some miracles
might work but if they like the shrine maiden and she's the established authority while you're the new guy...people will probably be pretty mad if you disappear her
Yeah that's the last resort plan
Or if I can get a zealot to kill her in public then publicly excommunicate him but don't actually
Get a shill to pretend to have a missing arm and "regenerate" it from the sleeve. Wow! Your patron is so strong!
Yeah, but what happens then when someone actually needs it done :p
"If you pray and the answer is no, then your god simply has different, better plans for you, my child"
Might work :p for awhile
I mean it seems to hold up for a few centuries once you get enough people in on it
Is there a skill or a spell that effectively forces all enemies to target you?
D&D doesn't have "aggro" if you're implying that.
there is the spell compel duel
The closest thing I can think of from the top of my head is the Compelled Duel spell but it is only one target but it gets a saving throw.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/compelled-duel
Ah, a shame.
Again, there is no "aggro" in D&D.
Also there's Ancestral Guardian barbarian
After thinking a bit I think I'm going to scrap the paladin multiclassing and just go full meaty barb instead.
Which can give enemies disadvantage to attack anyone but them if they damage them
PHB only, Berserker or Totem Warrior sadly
aah, drat
Thanks for the help though. The main reason I'm scrapping paladin is that the bonuses for team defense just seemed so miniscule compared to the bonuses of the last 4 barb levels (if I ever get there)
And the main one I would have used wasn't allowed
So I'm just making a tanky barbarian
I really need to stop looking at my potential maximum because of how rare level 20 characters are
Expected as much
Though, I was expecting them to end at the 5/6 mark
A campaign that goes from 1 to 20 will probably take over a year
Mine's been a year and they're only 20% in.
I'm not even sure playing at that level is that great. Every fight needs to be an epic clash of ginormous proportions or you'll be bored. Might be cool for some, but you can't really do anything without a world threatening big bad around every corner. So looking at your maximum at the very start is looking at what you'll do in a game that I'm not sure most people
A - want
B - will see
It took 3 years for me to finish mad mage which was a levels 5 to 20 campaign.
and that was with weekly play
We've had a couple "shopping episodes" sessions (that wasn't my plan but the players decided to do stuff during downtime).
basically anything you run into melee with will give you an attack of opportunity when they want to leave, so while you can't force something to attack you, it will sting quite a bit if they ignore you. It's less like aggro and more a question of forcing a trade off.
Then by end of campaign I'd only have 3 feats/stats
How should I balance this out?
You're multiclassing still?
GWM for the + 10 sounds really enticing, but I'm facing homebrew enemies that probably have ungodly ACs
Well, it's either ASI or feat. You have to decide.
I'm running 19/15/18 for the main stats. I can either
A: get dex to 19 for 19 AC + GWM
B: get str and con to 20, 16 dex + GWM
C: Get 20/20/18
The main thing is that I'm running the games "tank character", so I need high AC/Health
I feel like option B is the best here, but since we're fighting Homebrew monsters the GWM imposed -5 will cause me to miss 90% of my attacks.
I mean...not all homebrews are powerful necessarily. Not all will even have high AC. Also you can always choose not to use GWM if you have trouble hitting someone
Would 18 AC be high enough to get me through late game campaigns?
Sure. AC doesn't go up very high in 5E (unless your DM is generous and gives out +3 plate armour with a +3 shield).
Hi all! I’ve been interested in DND for a while, but have never gotten to play. (My mother thinks it’s demonic or something 🙄). I’ve played around with DnD Beyond character sheets a bit and read the PHB, but that’s it. I’d like to find a group that can help me get started, even if they’re mid-campaign, but I’d rather not use voice chat. Which channel would I go to to ask for something like that?
#750812887697588356 would probably be your best bet to start with
I wnat my character to be a healer so I made him a cleric are there any specific spells or items he should have he’s level 4
Specific to healing?
Yes
Cantrips: Spare the Dying, Mending (not healing per se, but still along the same theme)
1st: Cure Wounds, Healing Word,
2nd: Aid, Gentle Repose, Prayer of Healing, Warding Bond (essentially makes you take half their damage)
Tysm!
Whats tysm
"Thank you so much"
Oooh
How do i make a character on this new server
( and can i have my old one bacck ?
This isn’t a play server per se
You can use DnDBeyond to create characters (DnDBeyond id a digital toolset service to help play D&D)
I’m not sure what previous server you were on
I believe they were on the one that merged with this one.
Not to speak for anyone. Just happened to be browsing one of the other channels and saw that mentioned.
I don't think the archived server had game channels.
There was a merge but the old one didn’t have any playing at all on it
Yeah, I don't remember it having anything either, but tbh I didn't really spend much time in it since I was coping with the unhealthy addiction of DMing 3 weekly campaigns at the time.
Don't list your age and please use the correct channels for finding a game. Like #looking-for-players.
Hi, sorry I didn't know about the age rule. Do I post in here and use that hashtag to find a group?
No, there are instructions pinned in those channels to make your own post, or you can look though them and respond to posts you're interested in.
Ty, new to discord & this server.
No worries! Welcome and hope you have fun here!
Is there a book I can read that provides one with a set story and adventure before actually starting to play the game? I've heard of gamebooks and "choose your own adventure (path) books.
Absolutely. Now do you mean an adventure that uses the D&D rules? Or do you mean like a gamebook set in a D&D world?
I think I mean the former but I really don't know what they stand for..
Sorry, let me try again
Only the DM would read the adventure. Players interact with the DM during the course of the adventure when presented with situations.
I'm going to be doing it solo
The former is like an adventure (pre-written) that you would run for a D&D group. It contains dungeons, encounters, NPCs, monsters, and so forth. But yes, only the DM should read the adventure.
However if you want to get an adventure, make a party, and run it yourself you CAN do that.
I've done it.
is there any way someone could help me get started with dnd? I know the basics of it in which theres a story and a group of people, but I have no idea how to actually... play
(also ||I know theres a wizard class, is there any way an 'ice wizard' character could exist if it fits intot he dm right?||)
D&D is a group game, with at least two players (a DM and at least one player).

you can absolutely make a wizard who focuses on learning ice spells, sure
hell yeah
I know but trust me I don't have anyone to play with
This is why you should look around, such as in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channels.
actually there are ways to play D&D solo. I've done it and I've seen an entire facebook group dedicated to solo adventures
Yes, I know but D&D at its core is a group game.
(There have been official D&D solo adventure modules in the past)
nod sure. But if they want to do it this way, then they can 🙂 I can probably give advice
this looks really complicated to learn
And I just gave them the advice to look for a group to play with. That makes it easier for them to learn the game with others.
so much stuff
Yes it can be overwhelming. Again, check out the tutorial videos I linked above.
it can be, but it can be a hell of a lot of fun
+I'm pretty new and don't really know anything so I'm willing to go solo until I understand the basics and prepare myself for a game with others (not to mention the fact I will be using English as a second language in a story telling game. That pretty much sounds like a problem to me)
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Yea thanks
that's fair. So yes, there are a lot of adventure modules you can look at. There are big ones, official modules, and there are small ones you can find on sites like drivethrurpg or DM's Guild
So is it going to be like one player for both DM and adventurer?
is arcana magic
I mean they're all intended to be run by a DM for a group...but you can DM yourself. The trickiest part is trying to avoid spoilers
but if you want actual solo adventures that are intended to be run by one person for their one character like a choose your own adventure novel I think there are a few of those too
I'm sure that's what I want
Pure solo adventures will be more like Choose Your Own Adventure than a typical adventure.
There are a couple on DriveThruRPG / DMs Guild.
You might want to try buying this.https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/331912/DM-Yourself--solo-roleplay-for-5e-DD-and-OSR-adventures
Will check it, ty
This also comes up as a popular purchase on DMsGuild, and it includes Ginny Di's really helpful breakdown of solo play: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/252355/The-Solo-Adventurers-Toolbox
The Executioner's Daughter is a solo adventure (suggested price of $0.99 but it's pay what you want).
https://www.dmsguild.com/product/243081/The-Executioners-Daughter?filters=0_0_0_45752_0_0_0_0_0
I'm looking for a hardcover since it's the best way for me to learn but I will definitely take a look at these, thank you all!!
Stick with the free Basic Rules for now. It has everything you need to learn how to play the game.
I agree with OldManYellingAtClouds.
That said if you're absolutely dying for a hardcover, the Players Handbook is the one to get.
What is an AL-Admin in this group?
AL is adventurers league which is organized D&D gameplay. More info about it can be found in #adventurers-league
is there anyway to get into a campaign through discord
Check out #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channels.
What exactly am I supposed to put in the proficiency bonus slot? Is there a specific number I put in there?
all I know is that I have a +4 on my greataxe attacks
I know what I'm proficient IN but not what the bonus is
Proficiency bonus is a number that you add to things your character is trained in from their background, class, and maybe race
What level are you?
1
At level 1 it should be +2
then it's +2
How does the prof bonus affect gameplay again? Bonus to rolling on AC or damage?
You add your proficiency bonus to everything that you're proficient in from race, class, and background. So weapons, skills, saves generally
tool proficiencies
D&D Beyond did that for me though right? Want to know before I add a second +2 to everything
Well, let's check. What's your strength mod?
+4
and what does it say your attack bonus with your weapon is?
+4
then it isn't populating automatically
Did you put your +2 proficiency bonus into the place it's supposed to go on the sheet?
+8 on strength saving throws then?
should be +6. +4 from strenght, +2 from proficiency
Maybe?
On paper yes, on Beyond it doesn't give me the option to.
Honestly...hmm...I would ask on the D&D Beyond forum
I don't use it enough I guess, but if it's only giving you a +4 attack bonus something's off
My hit dice is +6 though, so maybe prof only accounts for hit and not damage?
I mean, my str and con saving throws are both +6 (+4 mods and +2 prof), so whats up?
Oh, I asked what your ATTACK bonus was\
not your damage bonus
and you said it was +4. Yes, sounds like you're fine then.
Damage bonus I have no clue myself then
2 questions. How do hit dice work and where do I write down atk bonuses
If you're using DDB, it should create the attack bonuses for you if you go into your inventory, add a weapon (such as a longsword), and equip it.
I'm just using the beyond character sheet because this is the first time I've actually made a character with every intricacy
Hit dice are a resource you expend during a Short Rest to regain hit points. You have a number of hit dice equal to your level, the size of the dice is dependant on your class. While resting you roll a hit dice, add your constitution modifier and take the result as regained hit points. You recover half your total hit dice after a long rest. Its pretty complicated so I wouldn't worry about it until it comes up in game.
Ah, alright. Seems pretty easy to handle compared to the other 4 things I learned the last 2 days
The best way to learn the game mechanics is to just play the game and focus on the roleplay. When a mechanic is required, rely on the other players and DM at the table to explain how its done.
Only four? Need to bump those numbers up :p
I don't really see a damage bonus location though. Closest I have is listing the bonus I get from listing the rage damage bonus next to the skill
On the Beyond character sheet, the bonus should appear besides the name of the weapon in the actions area
says I have a +4 for atk bonus. Guessing that takes into account everything else for me and turns into +6 during rage?
Doing that right now actually
atk bonus should be +6, damage bonus should be +4
Yeah it says I have a +6 when rolling to hit and a +4 on damage
Wait
So does that mean when someone says atk bonus they mean your bonus against enemy AC
Yes, correct
attack bonus is what you add when you're rolling the d20 to hit
damage bonus is what you add to your weapon's damage
but are you fortune's fool?
Idk, maybe
who knows? 🙂 either way no worries, easy to mix up
Yeah that covers basically everything for me
Just have to copy over some equipment and I'm essentially done
I wonder if my DM is going to do inspiration?
Most likely not, hearin some slurred speach like thine isn't goin to help nobody.
Now to throw away the spell sheet as it holds zero purpose to me
Nope! Scrapped the multiclassing because the only defensive parts of it were the oath of devotion. Everything else was just not what I was looking for
Gotcha
I'm hoping that my DM lets us use the same characters for a future campaign
I'm attached to this character specifically

how do you people play.. exactly?
Are you asking how the game works mechanically, or what goes into running a game?
Mechanically.. I guess?
The basic rules which are the first link in the post immediately above yours from Dyno cover the core gameplay of the system
will read those now.
If you have any questions about what you have read, we will be lurking here happy to answer them 🙂
Okay I guess I get the mechanics
so the game is played on Discord? on voice channels? 🤔
nor text?
It can be played through any means of communication; in person, discord text, forums, voice chat, video call

Hey everyone. i was wondering how you figure out your passive wisdom
10 + Wisdom Modifier
and the wisdom modifier is figured by what character your playing correct? or is that one figured out by the roll of the dice
It's determined by how you make your character and what value you set your wisdom as
This is the process: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
oh man yo uguys are awesome.. thank you
My local game store isn't newcomer friendly. How can I find an in-person game?
I don't have friends — been a loner for the past two decades. Makes finding a group difficult.
Sites like Meetup or apps like Demiplane.
sometimes local facebook groups also can help
Okay, thanks. Playing with folks I don't know feels sketchy, but will give it a shot.
When a bloodhunter looses max hp to "activate" his sword. Is it permanent or until the end of combat ?
Got any locally owned bars or coffee shops near you? Sometimes you can ask/persuade the owners to leave a little card or ad to advertise finding a group on their bar. Turns out nerds love coffee and beer.
I believe it resets after a long rest. It's been a while since I played with one so the rules may have been updated since then.
In critical role c2 matt says to taliesin that he loses 2 permanent hp to activate his weapon. C2 is prettt old so yeah what you said sounds right
does anyone know which racial language would have an Australian accent?
Whichever one you want to make it sound like it.
Flavour is free and that's up to you (player/DM).
its more of a joke, but many people say that drow sound like australians because they are from "down under"
I saw something like that about deep gnomes too, which Is what I am probably going to do with my character
Does ki work like magic?
What does DC mean ?
Ki is described as magical in the flavor text but its not magic in terms of game mechanics. it doesnt get shut down by an anti-magic field for example
It stands for Difficulty Class. The DC for a roll is the minimum number you have to roll for a success. The Basic Rules and Players Handbook sections talking about Ability Checks and Saving Throws will cover it, and each class description will tell you how to determine the DC for rolls that targets make to try and resist/avoid your spells & abilities.
I understand magic slots, preparation and cantrips any other basic rules?
Does the player faint after using all their slots
If the player faints then call 911.
No, they just can't cast any spells that require the use of spell slots. Did someone tell you they faint?
Seriously though, just think of slots as spells you erase from a blackboard.
My party gets attacked by a group of mobs, someone in my party casts some sort of mind control spell that no one knew he had. Is it meta gaming if I intentionally avoid attacking that mob ?
Eh, that depends on your group. Was it the character who kept that spell secret, or the player?
the character, those spells are kinda taboo in our world
Him being some sort of a psychic mage is part of his backstory
It'll be a question of whether he told the party what he was doing. Hopefully he'd decide to be helpful and call out something like "I think I've taken those guys out of play, focus on the others!"
hi guys

Making characters can be quite fun!
omg yas im so exicted
Just guessed.
One of the most common mistakes new players make is assuming the rules say things that they don’t. If they don’t say it, they don’t do it 🙂
Hey, I’m a first time dm, with a bunch of first time players, and a I had question about running combat. So I have the monster manual, but there isn’t much about just, basic things like thieves or humans, what should I do if they are doing something like a bard fight? Or fighting a few thieves?
By this I mean, is there any way I can find some sort of base stats for those types of characters? Or do I just have to make character sheets for them
At the end of the monster manual should be different type of npcs ready for combat encounters i.e mercenaries, nobles, etc.
Look at Appendix B: Nonplayer Characters. should be more "normal" monsters
Thank you! I was just looking in the main section for something like "humans"
I guess thats why I didnt find it
There is a bard NPC statblock in Volo's
I also sometimes reflavor some of these to be other hirelings (acolytes become minstrels when you flip their spellcasting ability from wisdom to charisma and change a spell or two out, priests become wizards). It’s beneficial to think of that Appendix as a template that you can adjust on the fly to get an NPC with comparable CR to be what you need at that moment.
Sorry for my blunt question, but what’s Adventures League in D&D?
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Adventurers League is a form of organized play in D&D. You create a standardized character following certain rules so you can drop in on public games at different venues

hello, so I'm newly DM'ing my first game to my children 10, and 11. I curious with zero experience if there is any videos they can watch to teach them how to play. Im finding myself having to fill in a lot because there's a lot of downtime/silence, (ex: I go and walk over to the cliff and stare out into the ocean). and telling them to roll for things, instead of them exploring on their own
Check the links pinned here. However, I also recommend https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPjdPog_vKX3zZa6R_R9nE7m2V-0WrAaY
Are there different rules for multi subclasseing?
Do you mean like a Fighter taking two different Fighter subclasses? Can't do it.
Under Tasha's optional rule, the DM can allow you to change sub-classes. However, you can't have multiple sub-classes. That's not a thing in D&D.
Hey, I'm entirely new and am wondering about some die rules. I've got a "starter set rule book" but I'm having trouble understanding it. Goodness there quite a few.
So now Drakewarden/Swarmkeeper?
What about them?
I'm not too far into the handbook but it's not explaining when exactly to use certain die.
It's only talking about d20
The feature, spell, damage, etc will say exactly which dice to use.
In the dm's book?
Um, no.
Go to a weapon or spell and read their description. They'll say which dice to use.
O, on the character sheet it says something about a spell save DC and =13
Is that what you mean?
Aren’t they both Ranger Subclasses?
Yes...
Ah, okay
So, when you attack, you roll to see if you succeed then roll the damage?
Yes
Ok.
Any other things I should know about combat?
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Hahaha, I was just watching that. Quick bite sized videos that help you understand the basics
Is the video that explains Warlocks the quick build one?
Is there a way to optain a breath weapon like a Dagonborn without being one?
The Dragon's Breath spell
A Dragon's Wrath weapon when it reaches the Wakened state
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/dragons-breath
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/4047217-dragons-wrath-weapon
I might as well stick to my druid and wait for draconic transformation
Yeah you can do that. Feel free to ask these less newby questions in #dnd-discussion and #1045166392174972938 btw
I was reading something for a campaign, and I noticed an attack said “the target loses 5 (1d4 + 3) Hit Points”. Does this mean they lose 5 HP and it was already pre-rolled, or that i roll 1d4 + 3? Or is it more of a do whichever you want?
the 5 is the average of the 1d4+3.
and its a do whichever you want thing, yeah.
alright, thanks
Newb here. I have a character ready to go. Now…. Where can I get involved with a campaign. And also, how can I find a local community in my area?
Couple of things you can do.
You can go to #750812887697588356 and fill out the form there or browse the #looking-for-players section to see what DMs are currently looking.
As for local communities, you can check your local gaming store or perhaps search facebook for players in your area. The former will probably be more promising if you have a local gaming store
Be warned since you've made your character in advance: Not all characters will be accepted into all games. Some DMs may disallow certain classes or races or require certain character creation methods so you may need to be flexible.
https://locator.wizards.com/ make sure you select stores and it should show most places in your area who deal with dnd
I can’t seem to find the form. I can view other submissions. Do I need to be a certain level before I gain access to this on the server?

Actually I need help with a homebrew campaign
Hi there! You might want to check in with fellow DM's in #dm-discussion.
Ah then maybe check the #dm-discussion channel (world and setting ideas and just general DM advice) or potentially #homebrew (if you need help with homebrew mechanics).
Well I've never made anything homebrew
Homebrew can be as simple as taking an existing spell and changing the name and damage type... Like Fireball is now Forceball and does force damage.
But again, #homebrew would probably be the best place to discuss that.
whats a good place to look up classes and all the info that goes with them?
Players Handbook is a good place to start. Are you looking for a catalogued version of all the information through all the books? If so, you'd need something like D&D Beyond or another reference.
a catalogued version would be great
D&D Beyond would be your best legal option.
im trying to design a website so some friends of mine and I can play together and im trying to gather all the information i can and impliment them into a website that is SQL db driven
That is a very legal grey area, especially with the issues surrounding the OGL.
That will get you the game rules and some basic stuff, but beyond that, you'd have legal questions.
This is beyond the scope of this channel, which is for discussing the basics of D&D
Hey good evening, I’m not really sure where to go to with this question.
Ive been interested in giving DnD a gofor quite some years now but never found players to play with.
Watching viva la dirt league playing DnD I was wondering how viable is it to play it on mobile phone ?
I downloaded dndbeyond and I have made some characters ( I’ve read that some DMs might not allouw them but that’s fine, was mostly looking at what does what tbh )
Erm, I don’t own a pc but I guess I could use my smart tv to open that roll20 even though it really really seems a massive step to just join a game. Been looking at it a couple of days but I don’t want to ruin other peoples experience because I fail due to my setup/ non-existing experience.
Followup question, how does one start with it if it is possible on the phone ?
My apologies for this long post.
Do you have local friends who you can play with, or would it be online?
There are a great many ways to play, so it's possible to do on a phone.
(Though I personally struggle specifically with Roll20 on my phone.)
But there are other map options, and it's possible to play without maps as well.
Ultimately, what tools your group uses (or doesn't) is up to your group.
Online, I only knew 1 person playing but we lost contact
Does this take away the fun of the game when you play without the map ?
I saw this YouTube video that roll20 is bad on the phone, that’s why I thought maybe my tv? I don’t know
If you have your character sheet and a way to communicate, D&D can be played as a "theatre of the mind" type game, so something like Roll20 wouldn't even be needed. If you're using D&D Beyond, you have a built in dice roller, but if not, the players and DM would just have to trust that you aren't fudging rolls and you're good to go.
Depends on the person if it "takes away" or not.
Ok thank you
The rules are actually written for playing without maps by default.
So I guess I just try joining a game when I have a set amount of houres free this weekend ?
And then there's variant rules for playing with maps.
I find these rules map/no-map in the app I assume ?
There is so much to read up on 😅 seems overwhelming.
Thank you all for your replies btw
There's a little bit of it in the Players' Handbook, but most of it is in the Dungeon Master's Guide.
Ill start with reading that then, thank you
Hey! New dm here, I was wondering if there is advice on how to make some bbegs
hmm. that'd be a tricky question for me to solve as I've got a few tips. Do you have a concept for a bbeg/s?
There's definitely advice on it, generally from other DMs. You might want to go to #dm-discussion to ask
So the plot for my campaign is that an arch mage attempted to capture/control the fey realm. Unfortunately he was in over his head and proceeded to be transported there instead. However this accident caused a lot of magic and magic items to be thrown out of his tower into the surrounding lands. He hires the party to retrieve his items from any man or beast they come across. I plan for him to eventually be my main bbeg, but while he’s out of the picture atm I wanted lesser bbegs to take his place.
For example, a group of crows were hit by wild magic and got turned into arokokras. They then are using their newfound powers/abilities to cause havoc and obtain more “shinys”
interesting. if wildlife is involved, perhaps a bulkier monster corrupted by one of the magic items, making them smarter and wanting to be more dominant to lesser creatures?
That’s the goal for the crows. They formed a group called BURDS RULL and a sorcerer crow will be corrupted by a magic item. It’s a homebrew item called The staff of the scarecrow. Takes roughly an hour to cast and cost a spell slot of the users choice. Can be used 3 times a day. It’ll be broken by the crow sorcerer by the time the party kills them.
huh

Hi Thulsa. I am also living in Berlin. I started in ~ 1997 and wasn't playing for quite some time. Lately, I start running a game. If you like let's be in touch.
Those videos give the gist of the game, explaining it in easy to understand language. You want something more detailed?
I'm checking it out now, thanks for the tip

Aberrant mind sorcerer, arguably oath of the ancients paladin. I don't think any of the classes are really lovecraftian in any specific sense though, other than being aberration-focused. D&D's aberrations are mostly not lovecraftian beyond "ooh, tentacles"
Close enough.
Ranger has a subclass or two that might fit as well, maybe
Ooh, which ones?
All I need is madness and tentacles.
Gloomstalker maybe. Monster slayer is a possibility. Swarmkeeper is vague enough about how the swarm effects work that you could probably make it work.
wouldn't be hard to reflavor the drakewarden's drake into something suitably eldritch
Thank you.
Hi
waves
Yo
How many 5e books are there that aren’t campaign/ adventure books?
5, hence 5e
Well, aren’t VGR and Eberron a little more than just a campaign?
Any other settings?
I wonder how I missed those…
A lot of adventure books are also setting books and vice versa.
Like, Descent Into Avernus has chapters of info on Baldur's Gate and Avernus
Hmmm, which of Theros, Strixhaven, and Wildmount has the most character options?
And/Or monsters?
Are you planning to DM:?
I like having the books, and I’m not entirely sure yet.
If you're not planning to DM and just want the character options you should talk to your DM because they have say on what's allowed in their campaign setting.
I don't allow stuff from any of those setting books in my campaign.
I do like Greek Mythology, I was already gonna get Strix just because of the owl race, and I hardly know who Critical Role is.
Don’t have a group yet.
Already have those.
Oh, sorry.
Ok.
how would i make a fair stat block for my paladin?
ive tried the app (dnd beyond) but my dm just keeps sayin i have to high stats
whats like nice base stats
Tell them to watch you and screenshare as you roll your stats.
Or yeah, ask the DM what's the method they want used for their game.
Not exactly i complete newcomer but never been able to be in a group for an actual long term campaign. Any tips on how to find a new group?

Hey
Anyone new to DND need help with making a character? I'm a DM and love the character creation process the most! I'd be glad to help anyone who dms me!
Would I be missing out on that much by playing DnD online with my friends rather than in person? I assume there’s basically no difference, but how do y’all find it?
I can see how that would cause difficulties lmao
nah just fly on over every week
I’m super new to dnd I’d love you help

In person it’s surely more pleasurable but (as someone who mostly plays online) after you learn all the little things that you can do on roll20 it’s pretty enjoyable too
In Person as Well as online Play get influenced by a few factors:
-does the DMs Style of pacing, decicionmaking and storytelling fit you?
-find Out If you are more into Roleplay, Storyprogression, mystery or Investigation. Give it a Ranking of sorts and then find a DM and other Players that share your Focus.
-Dont Metagame If you can avoid it
-learn to Accept decicions Others make, questioning them and arguing over it really does Not Help.
-communicate openly with your group If Something bothers you.
As for digital vs in Person:
In Person Play has the "hanging Out with Friends, eating Snacks" compinents with it, as Well as bodylanguage as a means to Express yourself in RP. But it has the obvious scheduling and Location issue attatched to it.
Scheduling issues happen with online play too but yeah, it really does get exacerbated when people need to be at a certain location at the same time.
@obtuse ore here is good for newcomer advise
Thanks
Hi
Personally I've become a big fan of online play. I can now play with friends I thought I'd never see again, and play with people all over the world, sharing my love of the game. I do miss playing in person sometimes, but honestly I don't find the difference to be all that serious.
hey just joined, no idea how to play d&d or the rules can anyone help?

That's fair, it can be a bit overwhelming. How do you learn best? Do you learn best from reading a book, watching people do something, or from live instruction?
Are Eladrin, Changling, and tortles allowed for Adventure League typically?
I believe so reading the players guide as they are in the Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse.
I plan on showing up to the local Adventurers League, but I've never been so wanted to have a few premade characters ready to go.
Check in the #adventurers-league channel.
Will do thanks!

Hey hey, super new. Never once played but want to get into it. But, was curious if there's a big community on people playing online? I live in a small town and don't really know if anyone plays or not🤷♀️ wanting to dip my feet in and learn!♡
Yes, a lot of people play online especially during the last two years.
I always wanted to enjoy this game, but most games can’t seem to make it past a week
Finding a good long-term group is like dating — there's going to be ghosting, arguments, drama, and incompatibility — so keep looking.
its pain T _ T
Kinda wanna try DMing but I dont think I understand the game enough
I've seen people DM livestreamed d&d games as their first time at the table. You can do it!
Have you watched any Actual Play games on Youtube or Twitch?
not too many tbh
If you watch Critical Role and/or Dimension 20 then keep in mind those are entertainment shows with professional actors.
If you feel you need a better grasp on the rules I'd recommend the Handbooker Helper series. As for DMing, the Lost Mines of Phandelver is a great adventure to cut your teeth on, it comes with the Starter Set.
am new to dnd online. Ive only played it once with my friends using the beyond thing, but ive wanted to get back into it, but i lowkey am lost as to where to join... and If I wanted to DM, what would I do, cause i would like to try both but again im new.😭 (I know like the base stuff about dnd, liek the dice and how to set up some stuff but overall im new)
Same tbh I play beyond but im so new i get lost pretty fast
Sometimes d and d beyond yeah
ive played with it before, but only using that dice thing and the charater chart, is there more to it????
also is there a way to play just typing with others too, cause i never know when i can make a call or not, but I don't want it to affect my gameplay
ah ok! good, but if there is a call, how long would they last, and when? or does it depend on the DM's ruling?
mmm okok. last question, can more than one person be a DM? like in one game i mean
Co DM's are a thing and colaborative DM'ing where people take turns so the DM's can play too
Back when I started playing TTRPG's my friends and I regularly rotated so everyone was able to play
Oh! Thats so cool! Ok thank you!
ok actually last question, what in the world is "dnd homebrew"??????
....... a-and what is WotC😅
Ohhhhhh ok thank you cause I was so lost on these channels when i kept seeing that
Like, if you want to make your own version of the monk called the Leaf Style Monk which had all leaf themed abilities, so your character could have a unique set of abilities, that would be a homebrew creation
I don't know why leaves are my example but that would be a new thing someone could invent for their game
ohhhh ok. so there are presets and there are homebrews?
Basically yeah. You can do everything by the book or you can come up with your own stuff with your play group. It's definitely a good idea to work with the DM and other players on what homebrew stuff you can do if you wanted to go that route.
*am so tempted to put the "da rules" fairly odd parents gif after that question but Idw get banned and i just joined *😔
you wont get banned but embeds are disabled pretty much everywhere that isn't used for self made art pieces or support related topics^^
ah ok!

Ty @echo kelp
yup never played
Hey there!
I dont even know where to get started
I can help out if you want, wanna move to dms? I can walk you through everything
Ok
Whats up?
I have dnd tmrw and I have a lot of trouble with how to cast my spells. The book doesn’t even help. It’s not clicking
I wanna just say which spells I got and ask which dice do I roll.
You just say "I'll cast (Spell)" on your turn and the dm should go "Okay sounds good" and if you're unsure of the dice you can just ask "Which dice is that?" and they'll answer
Once you ask enough about the spells you can even make notes to help yourself remember, im sure your DM won't mind
If it helps, you can focus on spells that don't require rolls. For example, some ask the target to make a saving throw instead. Then you don't have to remember any dice 😛
I think that’s the case for
Entangle
Goodberry
And Faerie fire
Right?
Those are thee of my spells. I also have thunder wave, Healing word, and one more I can’t remember
Right. Thunder wave is also a save spell. You just create a big thunderclap and everyone in its area has to roll a save to try to withstand it
Goodberry has no rolling, you just make some berries
And healing word is a d4 of healing
No attack or save involved, just a lil triangular die of health
Healing word is a great spell to have as a "save your ally" move if they go to 0 HP, because you can take a bonus action on your turn to bring them back up from up to 60 feet away and still have your regular action
I asked a guy if he spelled my name right on my character sheet i told him it was zander and i even confirmed with him that it was spelled zander i just checked it its spelled xander
Guess im xander now
Not zander
Ty 😭
I cant find a oneshot in the looking for players does anyone have a oneshot that i can play i havent played dnd before but i do have a character sheet made
They might have some available in public dnd servers. Some have channels w one shots going constantly
So far I’ve got
Produce flame - 1d8
Shilleigheh (can’t spell) - 1d8
Goodberry - no roll
Faerie fire - no roll
Entangle - no roll
Healing word - roll 1d4
Thunderwave - no roll
Charm person - no roll??
What does 1d8 1d4 and no roll mean
Hey there, I've just joined. Quick quesion...how do you post a LFP? I've gone oto the channel but it won't let me post. My "New" role status has gone.
1d8 means roll one dice with eight sides
1d4 means roll one dice with four sides (and so on)
no roll means you don't have to roll, it just happens
Check the pinned post, you'll see links to various forms
Ok
Fill out the right form and it'll be sent to the channel
What would be best for a person whos never played
Best what?
Best roll
There's no such thing as a best roll
20 haha
Hey do u know if those spell rolls I put are accurate?
Idk if I’m in the wrong spot but I’ve never played before and was looking to find a group to play with today how can I find one?
