The DC for something like that woukd be up to the DM to determine, and there are some tables to assist them.
so as a DM, i can say that DC should be higher than the character's base CON to have this hike successful, right?
You would choose a DC based on the difficulty of the task. The character's constitution only factors in as the modifier. You may choose to have it be an ability check using a skill instead of a save too.
Hey there folks 🙂
What is your preferred character building site/app? I tried using DDB but it requires me to have the digital books to add a lot of the stuff I want and I refuse to pay for that since I have the hardcopy books already 🙂
I don’t believe there is any site that can redeem your physical purchases for digital content.
There is no site/app that can legally allow you to access that content.
Yeh not looking to do so 🙂 Just wondering what your preferred character building site or app is 🙂
okay. so it is better for me to say 'the hike's DC is 15.' my character's cons is 14 with +2 as mod. i roll d20 and get 12, so the DC would be 14. does that mean my character failed the DC? or shall i roll some other dice for skill check because this character has athleticism +5
The DM would silently determine the DC, if your DM is having you make a Constitution saving throw you would fail. If your DM is having you make a Constitution (Athletics) check you would add your proficiency if you have it in Athletics.
The DM could also take other factors into account like if you brought water, have the right gear, have heavy armor, etc.
To give an example.
The adventurers made a forced march for 9 hours. At the end of the first hour, the DM asks them to make a Con save. (The DC would be 11 in that case, which the DM doesn’t have to tell the players)
Everyone rolls a D20 and adds the mod for their con saves. If the total is less than 11, they suffer a level of exhaustion.
Yeah, I was presuming that this was something above and beyond the travel pace, more of a constant difficult terrain situation for a hike across a short distance.
The DM could of course set a different DC based on more factors , yes
- If you haven't played at all, watch at least a few minutes of some streamed games, professional or not. It'll give you the basic idea of how play flows.
- Try to engage all the players, even if it's a just "What is your character up to?" Be wary, however. Some are perfectly happy being audience members.
- Don't solve problem players with in-game solutions.
- Don't try to avoid mistakes. That's impossible. Do your best to learn from the mistakes.
- Plan something but not everything. You'll figure out your own sense of doing enough/too much over time.
- Realize you'll get curveballs all the time so be ready to improv.
- Run a pre-written adventure or one-shot to get your bearings as a DM. Doing so will help you get some practice instead of having to first build a world (even a small one) and situation. Read any content in full before you run it.
- Don't see the game as a DM-versus-players scenario. Be a fan of the players. Try to present them with settings that let them be heroic/cool/whatever they're hoping to be in-game.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations so that all have a good time. A session zero is a good start (literally and figuratively).
- Don’t try to absorb all the info at once so you’re ready. That’s like trying to learn all the baseball rules before ever picking up a bat. Know the basics, start playing, and the rest will come with time and practice.

Hello question if I haven’t played D&D in like 6 years and I was looking to join a campaign how easy would it be to pick up a new character that is lvl 6 because I got a offer to join one the other day but I have no idea how easy it would be plus I don’t wanna be making all the players wait for me to figure something out as well
If you played 5e before then you shouldn't have too much of a problem
I kinda have played it before but my homie helped me build a character and such and I was confused most of the time lmao
So is it considered disrespectful to create a new character for a different group? I'm already in a group that I like, but I wanna try a new character.
Making new characters for different games/groups is fine and acceptable.
No? I don't think I've heard of anyone that thinks joining a different D&D game is "disrespectful"
Unless it just overlaps at the exact same time as your current game
It's like if you play a game of uno with one group but they somehow have the audacity to ban you from playing uno with any other person in the world
Which would be completely insane
Hello all i have question about being a DM, should i always ask "what do you do" from someone specific if not how should i adk multiple ppl about their next action?
I think you misunderstood their question. Its about whether it's disrespectful to use a different character in a different D&D game.
No? Why would it be any different?
Playing a different character in a separate game and your current group somehow banning you from doing that would be unreasonable in every way
First off we have a great #dm-discussion channel (grab the DM role to see it).
Then next, make sure to set the scene and try and ensure every player has a chance to shine. Some players prefer to sit in the back and not do anything until needed - that's okay, just something to be aware of. Other players will grab whatever space they can, sometimes to the detriment of other players, so make sure to help moderate that. So yes, checking in with the players, "What would <character name> like to do?" is a good skill to use.
Thanks mate, also sorry for posting my question here didn't notice the other channel 😆
No worries! Grab the DM role and have fun bouncing ideas off of other DMs in #dm-discussion!
I would but we have guests tonight so i thought maybe ill introduce them to to the game for now and maybe play some dnd tomorrow
hi i never played D&D in my life i know the rules but one thing is how to play D&D online cuz i dont have friends IRL interested in it
Have you checked the pinned message here in this channel? Lots of useful links including information/ideas on how to play D&D online
ow ok thx
Hi @lyric fjord! This is a good place along with #dnd-discussion to have conversations to learn everything. The rules channel is very much about discussing beating and arguing edge cases or unclear specifics 🙂
Ok thanks
Sooo, what should i know first ?

if a party manages to get to lvl 20 and decides to keep playing do they just keep gaining health or do they just like multiclass or something im a little confused by this
Level 20 is the cap. While there are boons (found in the DMG) that can simulate gaining new abilities beyond level 20 there are no more levels to be had.
ah I see that makes sense so pretty much no matter how you multiclass you can only gain up to 20 levels no matter what
Correct!

Hello.
Hello guys, I guess this is the best place to ask this question
I am about to start a new campaign, and I wanted to use a variant human, but I don't totally get what they exactly are. For my background, I am trying to run him as full human, both parents are, but he was adopted into a dwarf family
Is this the place to ask for it? Or should I go to #dnd-lore ?
Hi there!
Variant human allows you to start with a feat at lvl 1. It's more like a "variant-rules human" than a "variant kind of human" if that makes sense
variant humans are just humans with slightly different mechanics. Biologically identical
Ok thanks
So there is not a special reason they are variant
Just instead of getting a plus 1 in everything
I get 2 and a feat right?
Just a gameplay thing
Yep!
Thank you very much for your help!
Of course, you and your DM could certainly give them a special reason if you wanted.
I think if that is just a flavour thing
I believe the fact that he was raised in a dwarf family would be enough of an excuse to make him more "Dexterous" and "wise" than your average human
Going to run him as a kensei monk
HI! I have a new idea for a subclass of monk and I was hoping I could get some ideas from here. This subclass's main ability is that anything the character touches, it can replicate that same solid material into gauntlets, no matter what material. The ability would be able to last a couple hours and can only be replenished by a long rest after three uses. If anybody has any ideas for what I could name this subclass, please tell me.
P.S. I don't have a digital format for a class and subclass sheet (or character sheet) and I can't do it in roll20 without joining a game so if anybody could give me a Word document or Edge document that is in this format then please dm it to me. Thank you!
Yes, exactly
I'm trying to buy the Hero subscription on DnD beyond and for some reason it's not working. It shows the screen where it says the cost and subscribe button but when I press it nothing happens
#homebrew can help with that!
refresh and try it in a different browser mayhaps
#ddb-support can help with that!
I use the mobile app
Yes. Try a different browser. A lot of phones today by default use their default browser, and that is often a cause of several problems with different websites.
I've never had issues with Google Chrome.
anyone know what's the best to use for making maps? i am a terrible artist but i need to make a few maps.
does anyone know how i can make a thread in #looking-for-players tab?
Follow the instructions in the pinned comment.
ty ty
There's a bunch available. See https://www.dnd-compendium.com/dm-resources/maps-map-tools
What's best really depends on what you need it for (town map? Battle map? Dungeon?) and how much time and/or energy you're willing to spend learning the idiosyncrasies of the platform.
So whats the easiest way to get my hands on AL content to run.
i literally dont even know where to buy it if I could
hi! im completely new to dnd, can anyone enlighten me on where i should start in order to get into the hobby?
Looks like I’ll need to start doing research on what to start with.
Hello! The way I started was by finding a local Adventurers League near me. It's mostly all one-shots and you're rarely playing with the exact same people every week but it was a great way for me to learn. If you can find a home game near you, that is probably better but it can often be hard to find openings sometimes.
Your local game store or through online resources

will do, thanks guys

How does Sleep work because I read it multiple times and I just can’t understand it.
Basically a long rest is an eight hour long sleep, which restores most abilities, all hit points, and half of your hit die.
Almost a full restore
Sorry, to clarify the spell sleep
It knocks out targets in an area based on their hp, taking the total of a 5d8, and descending per person.
i.e. you roll a 25, targeting a group of bandits, 4 in total, each with 10 hp. two would be knocked unconscious, but unless a third had only 5 hp, the rest would be unaffected
I see thank you for the help
*e.g.
what race would people recommend for a new player that wants to do a circle of the stars druid build i was thinking loxodan the elephant race?
Just use Tasha's rules for racial ability bonuses and let them pick any race that seems interesting
Race hardly matters unless you don’t get flexible ASI
im the new player lol so i was just curious
If loxodon sounds cool to you then go with that
There's no magic formula, just pick stuff that sounds cool and play that
are tashas cauldron, xanathar's guide and unearthed arcana homebrew additions?
No, Tasha's and Xanathar's are official books, UA is playtest material and not considered official content
i see
It is of course at the DM's discretion as to whether any of that is to be included in a given game
why are they seperate from the players handbook?
Because they were published at different times
It's the publishers coming out with new books of new content
Because these are literal, physical books
ah, i see
PHB: 2014
XGE: 2017
TCE: 2020
Is it okay if I give my half-elf cleric a plague doctor mask? I'm trying to make a build around a plague doctor who heals others through unorthodox methods. Also is a cleric a proper class for this? I've been a onetrick Barbarian so all I know is haha axe goes shwing
Cleric is the main healing class but you can heal through other classes, Mercy monk, bards get healing spells, divine soul sorcerer, celestial warlock
If I buy the hardback books DnD, is there a way to update the DnD Beyond app?
Using the homebrew tools you can (sort of) recreate the character options, spells, and items. But unless you buy the special bundles from Wizards of the Coast there is no “buy physical, get access to digital” product.
Ahh so buying directly from Wizards of the Coast does it come with a code or something to input into the app?
Only if you buy bundles from dndstore.wizards.com
Yes the special bundles come with a code that you can use to redeem a digital version of the product.
Nice 😁
And what Davyd said.
Cheers guys, think I'm gonna buy some of the books in the new year
Heal them by throwing weird potions at them or go mercy and punch to heal
i would like to have a d&d session but i've never played it before nor do i know how to start and would appreciate any help; looking for a group and i'm willing to learn anything with the right help

Check the free basic rules out to get a feel for the game mechanics, watch some videos of people playing D&D to kind of see it in action, then find a group to start playing with.
Most groups are fine taking on new players - but it always works better if you put forth effort to learn on your own and being engaged in the game.
is it wise to be a DM when you are new to D&D
You can start DM’ing whenever.
A lot of people DM straight off the bat.
I mean it would be good if you’re at least familiar with the general game mechanics as that’s one of the DMs major roles -deciding what rules are in effect and what roles are needed and how to interpret the results into the story
alittle sad that no DM got back to me on the looking for dm post but i will never give up XD
But you can learn as you go - don’t let being new stop you from having fun.
It can take time - it’s a bit like job interviewing.
ahh yes dyingNoob i try not too but im not good with coming up with a story
but im not trying to interview anyone im more or less looking for someone the help me make something cool and i want a expert some what
Borrow inspiration from everywhere - books, art, music, movies
But also consider using a published adventure module. This can be helpful by providing the framework of an adventure so you can just focus on running the game.
And you can tweak up published adventures with some of your own ideas to help make it work for your group and style of play.
sounds good but im a artist not really a story teller i try to fit all the story in one image. for some reason i dont know how to stretch the story out
if you get what i mean
Yeah. I again would suggest taking a look at an official published adventure in that case. Again it can help you see how adventures are structured and help with pacing, etc.
Lost Mines is free on D&D Beyond and is designed for new players/DMs so would be worth a look
If you want to see how other DMs handle things (and see what we struggle with) grab the DM role and hang out in #dm-discussion channel
We are all pretty friendly in there
thanks a lot
whats the easiest way into getting into a game online
my first game i did at a place they just lumped me in the deepend and before going back to playing it at a place thought id learn online
This is going to sound a little sarcastic, but it’s a 100% serious answer
You just have to find someone hosting an online game, and ask them if you can join
i was told to try Roll20 or something
but i know nothing about any of it
hello
Roll 20 is a decent website. It’s a most used by online groups for battle maps. It lets you move tokens around a game board, and everyone can see it in real time
All i can tell you is i have dice and thats it
You said you played at least 1 game right? But they threw you in the deep end?
yes, not very good time
it was something called Adventurers league
um being a player just requires vc and my imagination, right? 😅
I have created my character but I've never been in a game before
And dice. But there are online dice rollers you can use for free
okay
Well, if there are still rules and such you are confused on, you should probably read through the full Basic Rules, which are available for free online. Link is pinned in this channel. If you are comfortable with the rules and want to try again, you can use the “looking for game” channels in this server to try to find a more beginner friendly game

that certainly does happen, yes. There is no age limit on D&D, but it can make people feel uncomfortable to play with people too far outside their own age group

wanna know how new i am? i know vaugly how many sides each die should have and thats about it
i was thinking on making a character. Species. Shifter (werewolf). subspecies Wildhunt . class wizard (school of necromancy). idk if any of that info is in any way accurate. what yall think?
hello, im currently making my first character, and i was hesitating between sorcerer and wizard, can anyone tell me what the difference between the two is?
wizards are Intelligence based and have a spellbook in which they collect many spells and then prepare some daily from those.
sorcerers are Charisma based and have a smaller number of spells they just know. they can manipulate those spells with metamagic. (like twinning them or making them last longer)
what about the other casters?

I have watched some streamers play dnd and it seemed like fun and wanted to try.
Where should i start?
Welcome! Check out the pinned message in this channel - it has lots of useful links and materials to help get you started.
I definitely recommend giving the free basic rules a review so you can understand the terminology and game mechanics.
As you have already watched folks playing, I'd say the next step after reading the rules is to find a group to play with.

Hi, what does it mean when it says something like 2d4 minions?
2d4 means roll two four-side dice and add the results together
So, you'd get for example 4 minions as an encounter?
Hey guys, I'm starting Tomb of Annihilation with a few friends of mine. We haven't played much d&d before, and I'm reading through the campaign book and am a little stuck on how I should layout battle maps. I've tried using roll20 to align the maps to the grid, but haven't had much success. Are there any other ways I can easily display the battle maps?
No, you'd get a number equal to the total of the two four-sided dice you rolled
So say you rolled a 2 and 4, you'd get 6
Uhu, sorry, that's what I meant. And the 6 is in this case the ammount of enemies you're facing, right?
Can't say, as that depends entirely on whatever it is you're referencing
Welcome to a new world of fun
It can be! But it’s fun and as you play you’ll learn the rules better
it is complex but at the same time the core rules are quite simple, so I suggest you giving them a quick read
Ok
im new and when i try to change the graphic of the game it talks about directx error or something like that

okay im a little confused
what exactly are the levels for? i know the modifiers add to your roll, but like what do the levels do? do they determine your modifiers?
sorry if i sound dumb im new
Your ability score modifiers are determined solely by your ability scores.
After assigning your ability scores, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. To determine an ability modifier without consulting the table, subtract 10 from the ability score and then divide the result by 2 (round down).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
(You can find that table here)
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Your character level primarily unlocks new class features as it increases, plus other things like your max HP.
At certain levels, though, you’ll get an Ability Score Improvement which can be used to increase your ability scores (and their modifiers).
Level marks the amount of power in a character, class, and spells.
For example, a level 10 fighter is more skilled with weapons and tougher than a level 1 fighter straight out of the military academy. A level 10 wizards knows more spells (and more powerful ones) than a level 1 wizard straight out of arcane school
Not looking to play yet, but how can I make a unique homebrew that everyone can play (with races, places, equipment, traits, and useful things)? since I want to make a Skylanders homebrew that skylander fans can enjoy
If you’re new I’d recommend using the standard races, classes, and items so you can get a feel for how the game balances things before adding in any homebrew.
I did mean as in creating unique things (for example Smolderdash's race)
i am like super new to this, i have only ever heard of dnd and i think it sounds cool but i really dont know how anything works

@fathom vector You can post it to the DND Beyond Homebrew Races section. There is also a some advice (As well as references where to look for guidance on how to do it) : https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1182-how-to-create-a-homebrew-race-using-d-d-beyond
No, don’t do that.
You’re only allowed to publish your own original creations. If it’s based on an IP like Skylanders, it’s not eligible to be published.
Your private homebrew is automatically shared with your campaigns, though, so you can use it with your own group without publishing.
Ultimately, though, if you’re new to D&D, I’d strongly encourage that you work on understanding the game before you work on trying to modify it, especially at that scale.
I'm trying to, but I can't sign up (due to sign up with google not working) and people usually use voice, I am the text aka chat person type
Its less popular, but there definitely are groups out there that play text chat only. Its called "play by post"
text only is wild
@smoky adder Based is not the same as taking an IP. Halflings are Hobbits, in fact all of D&D is homages, outright ripoffs, and IP theft, and always has been. As long as you rebrand it, it is ok. That isn't a Appoplexian, it is a Tigorian (still a violent Tiger based species)... that isn't a Wookiee, it is a Hirsusapian (still a 7'-8' big furry race with an honor code)... That isn't a Vulcan, it is an Astral Elf (wait, um, nah... I won't comment on the similarities)... That isn't a Githzerai its a Yuuzhan Vong (Wait, I think I got that backwards... well, whatever)... That isn't a Tortle that is Master Oogway (oops, Pixar is going to sooooo be mad)... And the Grippli and Grung totally aren't like Throg (Cause, you know, they definitely can't have hammers with lightning and winds and fight Trolls and Dwarves Ice Giants and stuff... wait)... oh, and we all know that Great Old One Warlocks are totally not violating IP by preying to Lovecraftian Horrors (um... I think either IP doesn't actually matter, or WotC has way more problems then worrying if a player bases a race off Activision Blizzard's Skylanders... you know, the people who borrowed Dwarves, Orcs, Goblins, Death Knights, Trolls, Tieflings I mean Draenei, Dragonkin I mean Dragonborn I mean Half-Dragons I mena Dracthyr, Gnomes, Duergar I mean Dark Iron Dwarves, Drow I mean Night Elves, etc. heavily from DnD...)
Anybody know how to set up one of those need players things?

Hey folks, is this the right forum for someone who is completely new to table top D&D and might need a little hand holding through the character creation process?
Pretty much
I just didn't want to disrupt the flow of the group if that wasn't it's purpose
Which part of the process are you unsure about?
Essentially from step one. Well heres the deal, loved RPGs growing up, ESPECIALLY Baldurs Gate 2 and the Kensei kit. Growing up where I did, table top D&D wasn't really a thing, so since I've finally got a good group I want to try and build one.
In my head it's an Elven Kensei Monk who's spent millenia honing his skills with a katanna.
If you want, we can get into a call and I can slowly guide you into building a character
So other than picking "elf" I'm kinda lost

Hi hi, I'm new to dnd (actually playing dnd) and uhm.
How do I play? I know how to make characters, that's just the only thing I know how to do.
(Please reply with @ on, thanks ^^)
(Edit: I also know how to world build and make homebrew and other crap like that)
have you checked out the basic rules? its the first thing in the pinned messages
Are you interested in DMing (running the game, playing as NPCs, being the arbitrator of rulings, etc. etc.) or being a player (a single character -unless death occurs- which interacts with a DM's world)? there is typically 3-6 players to each DM.
I'm interested in both, but I'll go with being a player before dming
Alright, other than reading the basic rules as Xanathar suggested, you're gonna have to find a group. You've got a couple options for that; within this server alone you can check out #looking-for-players to find games advertised by DMs looking for players. You can follow their instructions, apply to their game, and see if you're able to get in. Otherwise you can advertise yourself in #750812887697588356 to put yourself out there and see if any DM wants to pick you up. In both of these options you're gonna wanna look at the pinned posts to see how to actually make a post.
There are other means to find groups (reddit, roll20, other online forums, or locally advertised if you're looking for in person games) too.
Just be warned, it might take a little bit to actually find a group. player slots are highly competitive, unfortunately, because there are MANY MANY more players than there are DMs available. Once you do find a game, you'll have a chance to talk with your DM and figure out what exactly they need from you; once you reach that point the process pretty much guides itself.
Okay, thank you so much for your help! ^^
Maybe a way to have the battle maps easily displayed in person?

do i need to pay to play d&d?
Nope
so how does it work then?
The basic rules are free, character sheets are free, the are free dice rolling apps
oooh
You just get together with a group, the rules, character sheets, and dice and go
alright
The tools are all free on D&D Beyond so you can make a character there using the basic rules.
You only have to start paying if you want extra options like more races, subclasses, spells etc
so i need to download character sheets and dice to start right?
You can download a pdf to fill out from the Wizards of the Coast website (Google "D&D fifth edition character sheet") and either print it out or fill it out digitally.
The extra options are certainly nice, but there’s so much free content already published you can play the game and get a good idea about how it is played without ever having to invest more than your time.
Alternatively you can use D&D Beyond which automates a lot of it; there's an app you can use, or you can use the website
oh my...
And D&D Beyond also has digital dice, or you can use one of the many websites or apps
You will need to fill in your character sheet, yeah
The basic rules take you through the process
there is soooo much
ok
before i fill it. Should i open it in any program and just write my stats
You don't need to read it all, but I'd recommend reading the section on character creation first
alr, thx, brb
i don't quite understand the stat-making process
rolling the dice to assign strength dexterity etc?
and what dice should i use
Hey folks. Played D&D a long time ago in high school. For Christmas this year my daughter has mentioned she wanted to learn D&D so I’m buying her some starting books and I’ve been bingeing all I can about the new D&D and I’m getting hooked all over again. 🤤

Check out the channels #looking-for-players , #750812887697588356 , and #looking-for-community
is it beginner friendly?
You have to check each DM's table.
Table = group.
D&D is a tabletop RPG, originally people gathered around a table so reference to "table" is the group.
So it depends on the individual DM if they are newbie-friendly. Some may want to help new players while others don't.
how does the game play out? Is the DM streaming to us our game or only he has all the information about what is happening
The DM sets the stage, explains the environment and what's happening.
They then ask each player what their character will do.
Players then explain what their character will do,
DM decides what rules are in effect and if any dice rolls are needed
Player rolls dice, adds any bonuses/modifiers
DM then explains what happens (sometimes with player input)
Thus a collaborative story is told, guided by the DM (Dungeon Master)
before the game i should send my DM a character sheet, right?
Before the game you should meet with the DM and group and decide what kind of D&D game you'll play - then develop a character for that game.
That said, go ahead and build a character to get a feel for how it works.
And yes, generally a DM will like to review your character to ensure it will work well for the game
Because D&D is a social and generally collaborative game, yes there is a bit of feeling things out to ensure a proper fit.
And no D&D is better than bad D&D.
More like dating.
Some groups are more casual than others, but more experienced players will treat it like a screening/interview
Most folks don’t want to invest time into orienting others only for the game to go poorly or not at all, so it’s a safeguard against that.
The DM will tell the group what (if anything) is allowed or not allowed at their table. Some DMs (such as myself) don't allow certain playable classes or races (usually due to the campaign setting lore).
I only play with coworkers/ex-coworkers (or their coworkers) (everyone is a fellow game developer too) and with the expectation that they know how to play D&D because I'm too busy to sit down with a new player and give them a tutorial. I expect everyone to know how to play their class (and their spells).
maybe d&d is not for me
Don't say that.
You don't know until you try. However, there are more players than DMs so finding a group (let alone a good group) can be a daunting task.
Nah, in the core of it its just seeing if your character can do something and rolling a dice
You can try playing it with people you already know to get a feel for it if you like it more casual
Finding a good group is like dating. Groups fall apart due to drama and/or scheduling, players flake, and/or some DMs are jerks. However, like dating, you may find "the one."
Grab the free basic rules (check the pinned message here - lots of useful links including a link to the free basic rules), grab some friends, paper, dice, and try it out.
Or watch some other folks playing D&D via YouTube/Twitch if you want to observe it first.
I've been playing/DMing (mostly the latter) for forty years. D&D is fun and I welcome new players to the hobby.
I think i might try that but having no friends playing D&D, will be a tough task
Well do your friends like playing games? This is just another kind of game.
But if playing it seems too much - yeah maybe watch others playing D&D with your friends... they just might get hooked.
Do you have a local game store?
How long do you all usually play when you get together? We’ve been playing 4ish hours 1 time a month. This is my first game so idk what to expect.
I should also put a little warning about D&D shows/streams - they usually prioritize entertainment first over teaching the rules, etc.
That said, the Dungeon Dude's Dungeons of Drakkenheim on YouTube is pretty good.
Most game sessions run 2-4 hours typically but can range as short as 1 hour or last as much as 12 hours (with breaks obviously).
https://locator.wizards.com/ you can find most local stores with this link
We try to play once a week with three-hour long sessions although occasionally sessions are cancelled when there aren't enough players (minimum three out of the six players).
thank you guys! I think i found few friends to play with
Makes sense. I would like to do it more frequently as I forget what’s going on in between sessions and I’m terrible at taking notes ha
I also have a 15 month old so I dont have the time to go weekly
hello, i never played, but i'd like to try it out and maybe encounter a new hobby
i have a character that i made using aurora, it was my first time doing so, so idk if its ok or no

i already made a character
i just need to see the rulles and actualy play it to learn hot to play
Did you read the Basic Rules to know how combat, ability skill checks, spells, etc work?
am still about to go onto it
To get an idea of how to play, watch some videos on YouTube. That is a great way to see the rules in play and learn how the game is played. Then find a game store in your area that offers games onsite or dungeon masters looking for players. That’s how I did it.
Once there one gets familiar with the basic role play, is there a way to listen in to a session that’s on? Have a few hours this eve and would love to take part even in that limited way🤷🏻♂️
^ enjoying this crappy weather my fellow Canadian 😄
Yes! Blustery and rotten out
Go watch some dungeon dudes on YouTube they are Canadian too
That’s what I’ve been doing at work the last few days. Found lots of great YouTube videos and I’ve watched a few games played. Watched a Celebrity D&D with Terry Crews. Im going to be working on a surprise campaign for my daughter to play once I get it written up
Dungeon dudes? I’ll check that out!👍🏻
As will I.
I’ve watched some Critical Role. And played 25yrs ago. Just poking around on here looking for a chill bunch to have the odd game with. Love the whole strategic combat stuff🕺🏻

Yes for my sins lol
Ha!
Enjoy the world of DnD 😁
Thanks! I’m sure I’ll stumble disruptively into a game🤦🏻♂️❗️

Cool! Thanks 👍🏻
You played 2E AD&D?
I think it was AD&D yup
I’ve been watching alot of his videos to help understand D&D he’s got a lot of great info
Have tonnes of books packed in the boxes in a closet
5E is relatively simple compared to 3.5E and 4E. Probably closer with BX and AD&D.
Those could be worth a small fortune on eBay.
What class should I be starting with as someone who has never played? I made this bard guy but I don't think I would enjoy playing him. I'm also pretty sure I got a few things wrong while filling out the character sheet lol.
Really? They are mostly mint too. I was a bit of a fuddy duddy

Will do, thanks!
S'all, just a heads up for the purpose of the channel
@vivid prairie It’s nice and simple and help you build a character, also if and when you find a game your DM will help you too
Thanks a ton! :)
Can anyone help me where it says in the PHB how much starting gold your character starts with? Articles keep saying it depends on Class and Background and I see it in Backgrounds but I don't see where in Classes how much gp each class starts with
It's not in classes at all. Your starting gold comes from your background.
You get a certain amount of equipment from your class, but not gold
Under your Class Features > Equipment are the starting equipment (but not gold) in addition to the stuff from your Background.
Unless you use the alternate starting equipment rule in which you don't get any of the starting equipment (or gold) from either your class or your background and instead roll for an amount of starting gold and buy all your starting equipment from that.
This varies by class. The table is found in PHB p 143
Thank you so much that is what I was looking for
Just do keep in mind that you don't roll on that table if you take the starting equipment from your class and background
Howdy
Haha this is where veterans go to die
huh?
It's a joke because this is newcomers
I don't get the joke, but thats fine. Welcome
Thanks lol
Not exactly a newcomer persay but is there a place to learn how spell preparation works? I don’t think I understand
Also I’ve no clue what ritual spell means
The exact rules for Spell preparation varies a bit from class to class, but the basic idea is, instead of “learning” a spell and then being stuck with that choice forever, you instead basically get to re-pick your spell list for free every day. If you can tell me what class you want to play, I can go more into the specifics.
Ritual spells are any spell that had the “ritual” tag, the same way some spells have the “concentration” tag. If a spell is a ritual spell, and you are playing a class that has a ritual casting feature, then when you cast that spell, you can choose to add an additional 10 minutes to the casting time. If you do, you do not expend a spell slot when you cast it.
I’m trying to figure out wizard atm
I was under the assumption that once you picked a spell at level up that’s it
Ok, so wizards are a bit of a special case, because they are a mix of both. Basically, at level up, you pick 2 spells, and add them to your spell book. At the start of each day, you pick a certain number of spells from that spell book, and those are the spells you are allowed to cast that day
The table lacks spells known and I think that’s what’s confusing me
Okay yea I gets it
Wizards can potentially learn all their spells. So while you gain 2 a level its possible to learn any others via study, getting them from other wizard's spellbooks and other places
Yea thank you, now’s a matter of picking subclass
Whuch isn’t for this channel afaik
So im coming in from Pathfinder, and i've been looking at 5e classes and races over and over and over again... I know 5e is way more roleplay driven, but I can't really get over how oversimplified all the classes are.... Am I misinterpreting the choices given, or is it really this streamlined? Also, is there a universally accepted kitsune race? I haven't been able to find one
My go-to's for pathfinder have usually been bad touch clerics (gnolls of lamashtu preferably), and shapeshifting/wildshaping characters that focus mostly on martial abilities. After looking at druids and the shapeshifting barbarians, and the death/trickery domain clerics it seems its..... idk, far more limiting than I was told
No official kitsune race. You could maybe use the stats for a different race—my instinct would be ardlings or shifters.
After looking a bit closer at warlock, I see why bad touch was taken away from clerics, warlocks seem to have the best of those abilities now. I suppose I could just pretend to be a weird cleric as a warlock, it hits the flavor enough
you mean like celestial warlock?
No, bad touch cleric is usually evil. basically, it would play out as a support/healer type and whenever something gets close to try and take them out, just turn the bugger inside out with a handshake (inflict wounds, slay living, etc). couple debuffs here and there, hold person. a lot of the stuff is in 5e, but not all of it unless im missing something. they seem to be more of a mid-range debuffer than anything else
I've never looked into pathfinder character creation rules, but from what i've been told, yes, 5e is far more simplified than whats available in that game.
You're using a lot of jargon from pathfinder that doesn't translate well into 5e tbh. "bad touch" as a character archetype isn't really a thing. I assume its some sort of build based on melee spell attacks, yeah? 5e does have an inflict wounds spell, but I've never heard of "slay living" before.
Bad touch is a term used for characters who specifically cast in melee, doing really nasty hard to resist effects such as inflict wounds, Slay Living is basically the highest tier of it, or really nasty debuffs. The reason they are so potent is because they can only be cast in melee, high risk high reward. From what im seeing, you can do that in 5e but its less direct, more taking control of small parts of the field through upcasting hold person and such
Where bad touch in pathfinder is more directly dangerous, since the damage types range from negative energy to simply unmitigable damage (slay living pretends its negative energy but its basically true damage) and the damage is much more potent than say, a well made barbarian
Its honestly, a support class that when the enemy sees what they can do when their friend explodes they decide to stay away
there are very few spells in 5e that affect enemies and have a range of 5 feet. Honestly, inflict wounds is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. There are plenty with very short ranges, like 30ft, but that doesn't seem to be the same thing you are talking about
Right, I noticed that. It's not exactly a bad thing, it just makes it a bit... stagnant. I like that its better at playing with the party, even if its not as scary
there are a few buff/healing spells with touch range, but not damage/debuff ones
Right, that seems to mostly be saved for the warlock even then its midrange
What are some example you saw with warlock? I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to
the warlock seems to have a lot of bad touch flavor with hexblade and such
debuffs, heavy hitting cursey/negative energy sort of stuff but not exactly
it basically does the same thing, but at mid-range
debuffs, explodes people occasionally
Ah sure
yeah, warlocks are more or less the designated "curse" class
to some extent
I honestly don't like spellcasters but looking at the martials in 5e its like... wow, this is a cool idea... and then I realize that its honestly just a slight reflavor of not doing the cool thing lol
in the end most of the subclasses do the same job just in different flavors, which I guess is okay since you can just jump right in
Im all for roleplay but when I want to play a giant scary cat thing, I want it to feel like im playing a giant scary cat thing, you know?
and for more than an hour at a time.
that was more a comment on wild shape druids than martials but I play my druids like martials most of the time... since I don't actually like spellcasting
Idk, I guess I would have to just jump in and try something out. Im not trying to be super unique guy that breaks the game, I just like the flavor I choose to have justification
I suppose. There certainly are some subclasses that pretty radically change the play style of their base class, but most of them affect flavor more than anything else. Sure, they each have their own mechanics, but especially with classes like Paladin or Wizard, they can end up feeling a little same-y sometimes.
Kobold being an actually good race in 5e and tabaxi/catfolk having good abilities is my favorite part so far. kobolds in pathfinder are really really bad, and the catfolk abilities never see play beyond like level 5
Im curious about the artificer, I see that there is a strange rendition of an alchemist in there, and thats my favorite type of "spell caster" in pathfinder since its not actually a caster. I was wondering if it might have access to stuff like making oozes/slimes in 5e
As people become more familiar with 5e, they often talk more and more about the phrase “flavor is free”
I’m sure this is discussed in pathfinder as well, but in a more simplified character creation system, it becomes even more important to put your own spin on mechanics that are otherwise flavored in a specific way
Artificers are an extremely fun class. My personal favorite, by far. Unfortunately, the alchemist subclass is pretty mechanically weak. The other 3 subclasses are far better
Right, I can reflavor stuff to be more interesting all day, its just a little difficult to pick a flavor that you want and it ending up being the exact same as whacky hitty swordy guy in the end.
Like, a lot of people say that the way pathfinder did basic wild shape is too overpowered hence 5e putting such a hard limit, but they don't seem to realize that all the FUN options for it are honestly too dangerous to use in a RAW game/module. Take my current pathfinder character right now, I have managed to get my wild shaped character, who in flavor is an awakened dire wolf, to do more damage in a single hit than anybody in the party and have an insane grapple that I can toss people around with. Sound op, right? Well its still got crappy Druid hp, and since its so big, stuff that attacks Touch (dunno if thats in 5e, its basically how hard it is to physically touch you so doesnt account for armor) is almost guarenteed to hit you no matter what, even from sources 5-10 levels below you
So its got a super high risk, with not a great reward but its fun when utilized correctly. And god forbid someone mind control him, our poor wizard is going to get yeeted and die to fall damage or something since hes allergic to damage
Thats the kind of weird stuff I was kind of looking for and it looks like you can kinda sorta but not really do it in 5e, to my knowledge
Oh right. Pathfinder is based on 3.5e, which means it doesn’t have bounded accuracy. I forgot about that
Im still not really sure what that is, I keep seeing the term
Bounded accuracy is the concept that you AC and to-hit bonus don’t really scale much at all through the entire game. It will a tiny bit, but only by like 5 or less. So for example, if a character has 16 AC at level 1, they’d only have like 20 AC at level 20. So no matter how high of a level you get, low level enemies will always still be a threat, in enough numbers
Plus, a natural 20 automatically hits. So even if by some miracle you do have a higher AC than an enemy has to-hit, they will ALWAYS still have a 5% chance to hit you
Ah, I kind of like that idea, keeps encounters fresh. Is kind of a pain to be a tank without taking abilities that are more about control, just like pathfinder but its fair atleast
Honestly now that I think about it, the ability scores being locked at no more than 20 is probably why the weird big cat flavor I look for isn't entirely feasible. in pathfinder, being a big animal nets you insane strength values at the cost of dexterity and AC, where in 5e it looks like you, the barb, and the fighter will have essentially the same range of effectiveness unless you start flying/swimming around
Yeah, that’s more or less true. The main benefit of wild shape would just be whatever unique traits or abilities that form has
How are combat maneuvers in 5e? I didnt actually see anything about them looking through the classes. Like, what kind of maneuvers would be available?
You’re gonna hate this answer 🤣
Combat maneuvers are a unique feature of 1 fighter subclass
Well, I guess it depends what you mean. Monk has their monk features of course. And many of them are similar to maneuvers. Things like stunning strike or deflect missiles are unique to monk, where as Battle Master Fighter has maneuvers like trip attack or distracting strike.
Ah. I thought it would be hilarious to be a kobold that jumps out and grapples people. lol
Why wouldn’t you be able to do that?
its not something that can really happen in pathfinder, not effectively, since being small makes maneuvers terrible
Well monk was usually better at it, since monk is usually about unarmed stuff
where fighter was everything weapon related
Grappling is not a maneuver. It’s just a special type of attack. It’s available to all creatures
What class would be best at it? from what im seeing, the battle master gets sort of a free attempt if an attack lands with an extra dice added to it or something?
But the thing is, to grapple something, you have to make a contested ability check, using your athletics skill. Athletics is strength based, so if you have low strength you won’t be able to grapple things very well. Monk is a dex based class, so they don’t use their strength stat very often. Most people choose to “dump” strength when playing a monk, which makes them not very good at grappling.
Any martial class with access to the grappling fighting style
There are lots of things that make a character better at grappling. The unarmed fighting style is a huge benefit, yeah. The tavern brawler feat is really good as well
You just want a character with high strength, and 1 free hand. So usually, it’d be someone who either fights unarmed, or using a 2 handed weapon
When you grapple a creature, it becomes subject to the grappled condition, which means it can't move, and nothing else.
If you want to force creatures to not move it's great, if you want somethign else to happen, it ain't gonna do it
Is there a way to lessen the danger of being small while being a grappler, like a feat that lets me grapple creatures bigger than medium?
nope
You could play a Rune Knight fighter, to tap into giants magic to become larger
A grappled creature can attack or cast spells as normal, just to be clear
The only thing you're shutting down with grappling is movement
Is that different in Pathfinder?
idk the rules to Pathfinder, so I can't say
I think the pf grapple rules are closer to the 3.5 d&d rules for grappling which are much more complex than the 5e rules
5e rules: grapple is a special attack , it's an opposed roll, you use your Str (Athletics) the target uses Str (athletics) or Dex (acrobatics) which ever it prefers, if you win, the creature is subject to the grappled condition which means it can't use it's movement.
And that's all it means
It’s an attack, but not an attack roll
A grappled creature can still attack or cast spells as normal
in pathfinder you can basically go down a chain of effects that make the grapple more and more effective, but it MUST be done over a couple rounds. the general action economy is, 1st round hit and/or initiate grapple, end turn (cannot make multiple grapple effects on the first turn, ever). 2nd turn, maintain the grapple, if maintained you may: attempt to damage the enemy, move them, drop them, or attempt to pin them. If you choose to pin, the creature takes heavy minuses, and can now be Tied Up to give them the Helpless condition, which essentially removes them from combat and allows for coup de grace etc
So grappling at a surface level, is the same as 5e, but then you can start applying more and more crippling effects. grappling someone also makes it so that they cannot use two handed weapons, and need to make concentrate checks to cast spells
There are some extra effects you can add in with feats/class features to make it more debilitating, but its basically "This guy is taken care of for the next 4+ rounds"
Yeah, 5e doesn’t have any of that 😬
Oof, thats a huge bummer.... i like the idea of a kobold wrestling you and being super annoying so that you have to focus on it instead of its party
It kinda sounds like a monk’s stunning strike ability might work better for what you want to do then
Looking at the description of grapple in 5e... it leaves it extremely vague.. it doesnt really explain what all you can do, while some guides are saying you can pin and tie creatures up just like in pathfinder...

Hey me and two friends re looking for a dm, they are a bit newer then I am. How would it be best to apply to be a dm?
hi, just wondering, as a beginner (like i haven’t even played a proper game yet) would baldurs gate be a good start for someone with no irl people to teach you? (also i probably spelled the name of the game wrong, oops)
Do you mean like the video game? The game would only help as far as the setting and city names go. It may offer glimpses of game mechanics but ultimately if you want to learn D&D the game, the best way to do it is by actually reading the game rules and playing it, not a video game.
Hello everyone im new to dnd as a whole i watch a few game and played a homebrew rpg whit a friend or two but now im looking a for real dnd experiance classic meet in a tavern type
I recommend checking the pinned message here in this channel - lots of great resources to help get you started.
Like check out the free basic rules and learn a bit about the game mechanics. Maybe try your hand at creating a character to see how that works. Then maybe watch some D&D live play /streams on YouTube/Twitch to see how others play the game. Then find a group to start playing with.
i alredy have a carracther
When you find your group you may need to adjust the character to fit the game/campaign and the style of play that the group is running.
But if you’re ready to find a group - check out the looking-for channels!

is legacy content balanced for 5e?
Not really
Since it’s made for older editions
Which had there own entire rules that 5e altered or removed over the years
i see
There does exist “ports” for older content to 5e, but it’s a great undertaking to port gameplay stuff
Sourcebooks for settings are easy to use in any edition, but be aware that there’s some stuff that may not adhere to modern social standards
If there is something from an older edition you want to move into 5e I would search online in case someone else has already tried to homebrew/port it
No because past editions' game mechanics isn't 1:1 to 5E. Remember that 5E simplified the rules (compared to 3.5E and 4E) while it's more complex than OD&D, BX, and AD&D.
I'm currently using adventures from 2E and 3.5E and it takes a bit of work trying to convert the gameplay mechanics and monsters over to 5E.
Which legacy races?
stuff like the aarakocra, goliath, genasi
Those are in 5E — they're not legacy as in previous editions.
in dndbeyond it says they are legacy?
"Legacy" as in they've been surplanted by the updated rules in Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse (they were originally in the now out of print Volo's Guide to Monsters and Elemental Evil Player's Companion)
The Elemental Evil Player's Companion is already included in the D&D Beyond Basic Rules or you can download the pdf for free (https://media.wizards.com/2015/downloads/dnd/EE_PlayersCompanion.pdf)
so theyre meant for 5e?
Yes.
Again "Legacy" just means those were the old version from an older book (Volo's Guide to Monsters) and they've been updated with a newer book (Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse).
alrighty, thakns
More info here on what DDB means by “Legacy Content”:

I’ve got a question. What happens when a vampire bites someone with Lycanthropy?
The DM decides what will happen.
If its the Lycanthropy from the MM, I think they are immune to damage from the bite, so nothing.
Oh actually I think they take the necrotic damage.
So yeah back to the DM Lol

How do you read adventures?
From start to finish, usually reading as far ahead of whatever your party is doing in order to be prepared
Alright, thank you Davyd
Hi! Very new player here with a question regarding 5e literature. Other than the Phb, what are the best books for a new player? I'm familiar with DnD concept-wise but I'm yet to take part in an actual campaign
Probably either Xanathar's or Tasha's would be my suggestion if you want more subclasses and spells, or Monsters of the Multiverse if you want more player race options
Thanks!
Another question, do people prefer physical books or DDB? Just curious to see people's preferences
I like digital books because I can quickly search them personally
yo guys, imnew to dnd and would like to start, could someone help me get into the game?
ive been wanting to play with friends bu i haven't had the chance yet
im busy reading them
its gonne take a while for me to get them all straight in my head
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
I'm kinda new.
I've put off reading the rules a bit because I've been messing around with d&d beyond and skimmed through the rules.
what is a good class and race to start off on dnd
It's mostly preference although some people recommend staying away from spellcasters 🙂
ok... how about a monk, are they a good starterclass?
or are they spellcatsers aswell
Monk might be a fun noncasting class that is otherwise involved. I've seen someone start off as one, so I think it's a good option to consider.
I started out with fighter.
And I know someone who started off as a cleric and resented the decision every time he had to prepare spells 🥶
As for race, races are far less complicated imo. So I think anything you find you connect to or like the style of. Human can be a good choice if you have trouble feeling like you 'get' the other races, and you could also say it's the least 'complicated' in terms of features.
Hey im pretty new and trying to get my bearings in roll20 for a dm, how do I get maps/backgrounds for free?
Search Reddit, Pinterest, and Google Images.
gotcha, how do I add them to the game?
hey guys can I give you a link to help you out
I imagine there's a YouTube video or, barring that, try the Roll20 Discord.
Probably?
Yeah, if it's D&D material hosted elsewhere not officially endorsed by WotC, it's likely piracy and thus not suitable for this server.
glad the server block it then
You can find the free Basic Rules here, though:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
whats a good class for dnd eyonf
What do you mean?
Hey Folks, I just wanted to thank all the help from the group I've gotten over the last several days building my first character. Not only were comrades impressed by my character but how much I added to the campaign, (I went near Jedi Like Sensei monk and pretty much carved through every batch of bad minion we encountered.
Kensei Monk*
Unfortunately I hate to tell you this but.
It doesn't really matter what class and race you take. Although some races synergies with classes
Creativity > actual power level
I mean if you ARE new then there are some classes which seem a little easier to use and I understand that but all classes are good in their own way and honestly I'm in the same boat as you.
if you like it simple, then human fighter or human barbarian are solid. dont listen to the memes
I agree. I just took a race which sounded cool tbh. So if you are having trouble just look and see which one is the most stand out and pops out in your eyes.
Dam I'm glad I'm on my first character too but I didn't put that much thought into it. I saw paladin and I liked it. But now I have that kind of creative outlook you have right now so my next character is going to be much more complex. Glad you made your first character one you loved
I need help starting, I need some people to play with and a dm. And I want to create a character but don’t know how.
id love playing with you though um not an expert and I've been playing for under a year (dont know all of the rules that good but most of em i think)
Well I hope you can help because I am pretty confused right now on how to start playing, especially since I don’t know how to create a character.

As for making a character, check out the chapter in the basic rules (link in the pinned messages in this channel) called "Step by Step Character Creation"
how do i play?
Having the book that actually explains the game OR an online resource like the basic rules posted on official websites- or dndbeyond- are really important. Beyond that, is there anything specific you're confused about?
GoofyRunner this answers you too
Do you have who to play with? Friends offline you're expecting to join, or looking to find an online game?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/how-to-play-dnd
first two links here could really help give you an idea of what it's all about
And as you can see here there are channels in this server you can go to to find a game. But I highly suggest reading the rules or at least skimming them first, before joining a game.
Character creation is usually done with a DM anyway, but understanding the game on a basic level is important.
ok thanks!
Let me know if you've got questions :)
Should I use grid based combat for lost Mines of phandelver? Its my first campaign and I'm dm
What resources should I go to to familiarize myself with DnD and how its played?
There’s a bunch of helpful links here in the pinned messages to get you started!
But if you only pick one, I’d start with the free Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Grids are very useful for giving everyone a complete picture of what’s going on!
But they do take some extra time to set up.
It’s totally possible to play without, though. This article has some good advice if you skip the grid:

yoo
im a looking at the game now can is start by myself or i need a team
and i have like 4 other people that never played either would ut be a good idea for 4 new people to play or we need someone experience
Hey does anyone know any websites or any good ways to play dnd online?
Where do I purchase phb?
DND Beyond has a digital copy of the PHB that you may purchase.
You may also purchase the PHB on Amazon.
Larger local game stores could hold PHBs as well.
I know Barnes and Noble sells DND books too.
Do you know if this digital copy is like a pdf file?
I wanted to use it offline
You can download the PHB to your devices as long as you have a DND Beyond account that has purchased it.
So offline use is a yes.
It's not, there are no official pdfs of the fifth edition publications
D&D Beyond has a free app that lets you download your purchased books to read offline
Thank you
like i know next to nothing about dnd
What made you join this server did you hear about dnd online? Are you gonna make a campaign w friends?
I heard about dnd offline and i havent tried to convince my friends to play dnd
Like im just looking to have fun with strangers
Not rn tho
Do you know the concept of the dm and the players?
I feel like ill learn everything important when i just play with people
Basicly
Yea i think so
Whats dm?
Oh so campaign's are designed and made by Dms also called dungeon masters.
Oh yea i know them
Btw@jolly crest you are extremly welcoming and kind. Is this whole community like this?
Couse damn ive been in some toxic communities
When i compere now
Nah all DnD is chill
But there are some outliers.
Yeah so as I was saying the dm makes and crafts campaigns. These campaigns are a whole eorld explained on paper everything that's in the world will come from the dms mouth.
Us as players well, get to explore that world and follow along the written story.

It's a question mark for the record
Should i read the rule book the set came with
hello
so at my lgs theres a few of us interested in getting into DnD. i have never played or run a game but after reading over the starter set rules (Dragons of Stormwreck Isle) I think I am willing to dive into being the DM. I would prefer to play in person. I have found premade maps online but printing them out seems like it could get expensive and i'm sure they're get ripped/torn/ruined fairly easily. Any recomendations on how exactly to make that work if you wanted to play in person?
Wrapping paper has a grid printed on the back if you wanted to make cheap battle maps
I created a character on there but never played it with a friend
yes, thank you. i have seen that but i'm just not into watching an hour or so of work getting torn to shreds in 1 session. any experience with those dry erase boards?
Yeah they a good to use don’t worry about going to overboard on a battle map just draw the important stuff
i wouldn't be against showing up with the first scene of a battle pre drawn, printing up handouts of the areas you kind of just walk through, and then break while i take 15 minutes to quickly/crudely map out the next battle area
hey thanks. you answering that just made me feel like i'm headed in the right direction
A chess board and some chess pieces can also make a good battle map no need to go expensive
nice!
Where can I post a picture of a character I made in hero forge

You (as DM) may also want to find YouTube samples of that game being played, so you see how others have handled it. Realize your game can and probably will be VERY different, but at least you'll have a starting point. There may also be YouTube videos with specific DM hints on how to run that game which can be thought of as appendices to the book you have. You can also discuss the game with DMs who have run the game ahead of time in the DM channel here to get some guidance.

Thank you for the insights! I just saw a great Bob World Builder video on this yesterday. I'm in the very early stages of planning here but I am confident I can do this and we can all have fun
I really appreciate all the help. this seems like a great community. thanks everyone!
So i have D&D books in person is there a way to have those on D&D Beyond as well without repechesing them
Not unless they were sold in a special bundle that included that option (and the codes to do so).
Oh ok thank you
That said you can use the DDB homebrew tools to create the things you need/have for your own personal use - just don't publish them.
Ok
(Also you can just purchase the specific races, classes, items and spells a la carte, singly, without buying the whole book again - anything purchased this way reduces the cost of the DDB book if you do decide to purchase the book at a later date).
Ok thank you
What is hero forge?
a website where you can design your own minis
pretty useful to show off the look of your characters without having any drawing skills
Hi
It is difficult to get a game huh
for a player, definitely; There's just not enough DM's to go around. Keep pushing through and looking 'round. you'll find a game soon enough.
I got to play one session that half the party was killed by a golem and skeletons totally traumatized now lol
Seems like to much math to dm
Do they make an encounter calculator lol
I guess I can start with world design and worry about accidentally killing people later lol
random dice question, how many sets of dice do you need in a normal game of dnd?
1 set for each person
that should work and can I play with you
k
I'm trying to figure out how to use encounters with d&d beyond
Can anyone help me a little with creating a player for me?
go to dnd beyond
I will need to find test subjects to figure out how to set up
Any dm's want to assist in setting up a server?
Have you checked the #looking-for-community channel? That's servers looking for people to join.

Still trying to navigate things
hi! i have a question about the wording in the handbook. about halflings, it says “you can move through the space of any creature that is of a larger size than yours.” i have no clue what that’s supposed to mean? does it mean you can move into their den or sneak past them? thanks in advance! (sorry if this isn’t the right place to ask, i’m a little confused by the layout lol)
And the other channels for finding a group to play with.
Do note that putting together a group to play takes time and patience.
Trying to find a good group that fits your expectations, play style, and schedule takes time and effort - it's generally not going to happen quickly.
I don't have permission to post in those
Great question for #dnd-rules!
thank you!! i’ll move it there
You don't post in the channel - you find a game that looks interesting in #looking-for-players and ask in the post's thread if you can join. Or direct message the poster.
If you want to post in #750812887697588356 look at the pinned message and click the link inside that message that takes you to Dyno to fill out a form that creates the post inside the channel.
I made a server I want to build a world I'm looking for some one to build it with me
Then you'd likely want to use the #looking-for-community channel - same rules apply, look at the pinned message, click the appropriate link, use Dyno form to create the post, follow ups and discussions can happen in the created thread that Dyno creates with the post.

can someone join a voice chat and explain to how to play thank you
i will be in off topic vocie chat
I don’t think a lot of folks have time to teach someone one on one. Best to read the game rules and ask specific questions as you run across things.
understood thank you
Anyone know how to add spells to my spell list manually? Such as a homebrew?
Well first make sure to toggle homebrew on for your character. Then if the character is a wizard you can add additional spells to your spell book through the front of the sheet on the spell tab. But for other classes I’m not 100% sure you can add any random spell to your list unless you have the space to have that spell. Honestly it may be easier to write it in with a pencil on a printed character sheet.
I see..
Maybe #ddb-support can assist further
can't seem to find that channel anymore
Go to #880965682462875679 and toggle the DnDBeyond role
Ah, found it
Appreciate the help! Thanks!
I’m new to dnd but I’ve been playing rpg games my whole life, could someone please explain an overview of what dnd is and how I play it
It's a fantasy cooperative tabletop role-playing game that uses a combination of roleplaying and rules to allow you to explore and adventure as a character of one of thirteen adventuring classes
You don't need to buy anything to get started, just check out the free basic rules https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Thanks!
is it possible to get advantage on damage rolls?
No because advantage/disadvantage is only for d20 rolls.
Specifically it's only for attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks. There are one or two d20 rolls that don't fall into those categories and you can't have advantage on them

btw do i need like a pice of paper for my characters stats or is there a website for it?
You can use the character builder on D&DBeyond, or there are character sheet pdfs available on the WotC website
Thanks, I mangled my first sentence as silly sleepy fingers don't want to type this early
what the hell is a halfling?
It's a diminutive humanoid race, very similar to a hobbit from lord of the rings
what does that even mean. so you mean its a thin dwarf??
do you not now what a hobbit is?
its a hobbit but for legal reasons they cant call them that
Have you never heard of Lord of the Rings?
yes
oh ok that explaions everything
For real? I need to try this out thanks.
Then you should know what a hobbit is — they were referred to halfings a few times in the books.
gotcha
Many things in the original D&D were blatantly named after creatures and things in Lord of the Rings and had to be changed due to legal threats from the Tolkien estate (such as balrog to balor, mithril to mithral)
diminutive means "extremely or unusually small"
thx
im from Poland so my vocabulary is less developed in english than other people
Ah, apologies
I just meant they're small, human-like people, like the Hobbits from Lord of the Rings
Don't worry I am native English and I still don't understand their words lol
apologies for what? expanding my vocabulary?
Apologies for assuming that English was your first language and using a term that was less plain than it could be
damn this discord is now suspiciously nice
whats constitution?
It's an ability score that determines things like how many hit points you have, how well you can concentrate on spells when taking damage, and how far you can run during chases, amongst other things
It's your stamina, endurance, and overall health.
This section of the basic rules explains Constitution

wait a sec if im alone and i want to be a playier what do i pick?
ok
Whats the diffrence beetween a soucerer and a mage?
Mage isn't a class
Or however its called
If you mean Wizard, a Wizard masters magic through study and practice, whereas a Sorcerer has innate magic flowing through them which they must control through force of will
Ok thats good to know but i ment gameplay vise
Wizards cast using Intelligence, can learn more spells through copying them into their spellbook, and can swap their spells out each long rest
Sorcerers cast using Charisma, learn fewer spells and can't swap them out, but can modify them using what's called metamagic
Yep, they can increase the number of targets, cast a spell more quickly, change its damage type, or increase it's range
I don't know what the distinction is between a sidegrade and upgrade
Sidegrade is giving a downside and an upside for ex.- chaching from frost to fire
But you can read the sorcerer class page here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/sorcerer and wizard here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard
So its like better in one situation but worse in other
So mostly upgrades but olso some sidgrades
Sure
How long do you reckon ill have to wait for a game ?
It can take a while, even if you're being proactive about it
I'm talking weeks maybe, sometimes months
Damn
Generally it's because the DM will have to review and vet players, do a session 0, wait for people to make characters suitable to the campaign, and then schedule the first game
At what level are you able to multiclass?
You can multiclass from level 2 if you meet the requirements
As you need to have at least 1 level in each class
y do you have to review and "vet" playiers?
I normally have a chat and see what they want out of the game and if it fits with my style and vibe as a DM
i found one in 3 days
Generally to make sure their style works with yours.
Personally I tend to run light hearted romps through the story, leaving out darker themes or concepts. A player who wants that wouldn’t enjoy playing at my table, and I wouldn’t enjoy having them at my table. It’s good to vet each other so we don’t waste each others’ time.
If ya find one may I join you in it?
what's the general opinion about "solo" games (1 player and 1 DM)?
It's a valid style of play that a lot of people enjoy, but beyond the scope of this channel
I'm still looking for a group that does DnD beyond, voice chat, preferred Wednesdays. I can use roll20 too.
Not for beginner DMs, it requires modifying a lot of things that the game assumes
Please use the various looking-for channels for that.
and for a first experience as a player, would you recommend a group is better?
For a first time player with a DM comfortable with the game, one on one can be a good first time experience
ok so im in a full group what do i do now?
you schedule your first session, ideally a session 0 where you talk about expectations, house rules etc
but with who? the dm?
everyone
its said for a friday
well then you can ask your DM if you need to do anything till then as preparation
ok
Does anyone want to play a dnd game with me or nah I'm looking for players for a campaign and this is my first time dming
You can post in #looking-for-players. Followed the pinned instructions.
Check your dms
check your dm also
lol damn here i am waiting for the looking for player post lmao
Wanna join?
ye ill give it a shot
ive never played before
Nether
ive been dming and playing for the past 2 years with an irl group, maybe itll help with obscure rules lol
How do you make a group chat?
Nice
u got to add everyone i think
Do you guys have any suggestions for joining a dnd group
If a spellcating focus replace the Material in a spell, does that destroy it ?
only if the spell calls for it
spell description with say specifically if the material is consumed
Can you make a group chat with @nocturne onyx @tight bison @lyric fjord ?
With you aswell
hiii
Hi
i sent out the invites
i just bought my first d&d kit and i’m trying to learn it so i can dm for my friends and family when we play. thought i’d join the server to talk to some pros :)
Wait how does one accept invites
mods are pro I guess
I’m on the same journey tbh
https://allegro.pl/oferta/dungeons-dragons-essentials-kit-d-d-set-12818464721 is this a good kit and do i need any other accesories for the game?
Sorry if laungage barrier
It has character sheets, rules, and an adventure. I don’t think that one has dice, but you can always use digital rollers.
It is a good one from what I’ve heard, though I haven’t tried it myself.
"Everything it's about: includes an English language book (may not be available in Polish), an adventure book, 6 character sheets, a ladder screen, 11 dice, a double-sided card, 81 cards for auto items and side kicks in this adventure." Translated from polish
Is this enough?
Yeah, that is a decent introduction adventure for new players and DMs, and includes the character building rules
Yep, that’s all you should need to play!
And other nice-to-have accesories to buy that would be helpful?
A dice tower and/or tray for rolling. A journal and/or binder for notes. Spell cards for quick reference.
More dice so each player has a set possibly?
Ok
Mind, these aren’t strictly necessary.
Yes i know
I have a bon that still has money in it so ill waste mony if i dont buy more things
And im gonna lose dice somewhere so idll be nice to have more dice
Alright anything for 5 dollars from my gift card?
Like i have more dice
What else?
So I don't quite understand spellcasting focuses...
The PHB says that I can use a spellcasting focus in place of the material components but if a cost is mentioned it says I need that specified component anyways? So what's the point of a spellcasting focus?
There are certain spells that require components, for example Animate Dead ( https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/animate-dead) requires a drop of blood, a piece of flesh, and a pinch of bone dust. A focus can replace those components, but not say the Diamond needed for Chromatic Orb which has a cost
OOOOHH i get it now, the components that actually cost gold and have value are what's required?
You got it.
So I had a question: If you have a list of spells and you prepared ( for example 2 max) 2 of them , can you remove them and prepare another 2 different spells to fit the slots? ( and when?)
Depends on the class. Some allow you to prepare new spells on Long Rests, but some casters learn spells and RAW cannot change their spells, but as always, talk to your DM as they may allow you to do so
When (and if) you can change spells is described in the Spellcasting section of a given class's description. For example, https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/druid#Spellcasting-166
stupid question... do all characters know "common" automatically? For some reason my new character isn't showing Common in the known languages bit
Did you turn on the Customize your Origin option on the sheet? That would remove the Common Language I believe
No worries. Glad to have helped you figure it out 😊
can't decide which language to swap for common... any advice? Abyssal, Celestial, Giant, Goblin, Orc
I would have a chat with your DM about what would be useful
ahh still trying to find a DM for this character 😦
