oh noooooooooooooooooooo
I just read you right now, and I cannot get it trough
Everything is going just fine!!!! So fine... you cannot imagine
Hey, im completely new to d&d, and my friends want me to dm for our group every Monday night. I have a general idea of what it's about, but I would really appreciate some help/tutoring. I'm excited about this opportunity, so I really don't want to stress so much that it becomes a burden.
Welcome! There’s a post here with some good starter tips:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/159-starting-strong-at-your-first-dungeons-dragons
I have a Starter Set, DM Guide, Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Volo's Guide To Monters. But I still think I need a tutor before I start a campaign for our group
But if you’ve got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
Thank you @smoky adder
@lyric fjord I can show you how to DM
@signal fog pm me if you have time to call and talk a bit tonight
I tried to PM you but cant
Sent you a wave
me a
what cantrips should my High Elf Wizard start with?
i have literally no clue what any of them do
lol
I would pick a ranged spell, a melee spell, and a utility spell.
Fire Bolt, Shocking Grasp, and Message, perhaps.
Oh, you get one more as a High Elf, too, huh? I’d take another utility pick.
Mage Hand or Dancing Lights, maybe.
mold earth and shape water can be very useful a lot of times
Toll the Dead and Poison Spray are good combat choices, too.
Booming Blade is a very popular one.
I use Prestidigitation as my High Elf free cantrip, and then Fire Bolt or Ray of Frost for combat, Mold Earth for creating cover, and then filler cantrip
You might ask your DM if you can use the optional class features from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, too.
One of them lets you switch a cantrip after every long rest.
Oh, Mind Sliver is another good one.
And Mending
S I made a new character and there a teifling warlock with chill touch poison spray charm person comprehend language and unseen servant is that good?
That's more of a #character-discussion question
I have one question about dnd.
Do I need to actually read all the lore first before playing.
Yes
Ok.
No you don't need to read or know any of the lore before playing. Each campaign will have its own lore. What is more useful is trying to understand the rules, which can be found in the Basic Rules in this channel's pinned messages
Thanks. Now the time for me to read is cut down to 2 hours.
Feel free to ask if you have any more questions from what you read 😃
I actually do have another question.
Can I still be a undead skeleton lich even tho I can only set my race to variant human.
That is a question to ask for your DM unfortunately
Oh OK, thanks again.
Hello fellow gamers! I'm not new to DND but new to this discord. I'm looking for a long campaign to join in. My details are in LF DM channel.
Welcome! You can check out #looking-for-players
You don't need to read any lore to play. It might give you some interesting information for building characters, but it's not necessary.
I'm so happy, celebrated my birthday yesterday, and I now own the d&d starter kit along with the d&d essential kit, looking forward to opening it up and getting to grips with how it all works
Hello! I'm new to D&D and I'm looking to purchase kits to help me get started. Should I buy both the starter and essential kit or is it okay if I choose just one?
Hello everyone! I am new to the game. Have always been interested in playing and have watched a few different campaigns in different play styles. Only problem is I have no friends interested in playing. I would love to find a group of noob friendly players to help me into my first role and learn all there is to learn about this ever expanding game.
Hello I'm new to dnd I've been interested in it since be older brother told me about it and even bought me dice I'm into role-playing and would love to join a non-toxic campaign
Hi everyone! i always wanted to play D&D and im not sure how to get started. would love to read on some tips and join a newbie group for an online campaign
first thing first: do you create 1 character and use the same character for different campaigns? is there a standard guide on character creation?
How do i liek do a pre made campain
Hello all, im new here just getting started
You can choose whichever one appeals to you more. I have played the Essentials Kit adventure, but haven't tried the new Starter Set one yet

I've just purchased both, the starter campaign roles into the essentials campaign, but it's up to you
There’s a bunch of helpful starter links in the pinned messages here. This is a good article, too:

Typically, though, you’d have a separate character for each campaign.
Hi, I am all new with D&D rp but familiar with the concepts. I've played computer rpgs on-and-off for about 20years and are familiar with character stats/creation, some of the D&D lore (by playing BG series, Neverwinter Nights series ++), but not so much with tabletop roleplay. I've looked at D&D for years but never taken the step to embrace it. I signed up to D&D Beyond 2 years ago but never got into it. Now I see it possible to take part in play-by-post and discord... and hence it got my attention again. I am very interested to join a group with new players that aim at doing pbp. As I've never tried "real" d&d rp, I would very much like to try a beginner friendly group 🙂 Please feel free to pm me if you want someone to join your adventures.

#750812887697588356 #looking-for-players Hello to everyone here. I'm looking for a DM and party willing to teach a newcomer. I have a character sheet started for a custom character that I'd like a little help. I understand it will most likely not be playable, but just want to put it out there. I would also like to write a Lite RPG story out of any dungeon crawl played.
@raven dune Those are channel links, not roles, so you're not pinging anyone. If you're looking for a DM, you can
- reply to posts you find in #looking-for-players via private message
- post in #750812887697588356 using the template provided
Thanks, I'll do that.
Hello there
I'm a newcomer to D&D and I'm very interested in knowing more about it
me and my partner got an essentals kit yesterday
That's a really good start! Welcome to the hobby
if you're looking for more information, check out the pinned links in this channel
Additionally feel free to ask any questions you may have
Will do, I do want to ask, can you be disabled, and also have ADHD and still play?
Yes, most of the game involves talking and rolling dice, which DDB allows you to do digitally if you don't want to use physical doce
we have the whole essentials kit thing with what we need
I also just want to talk to others about D&D
seems fasinating, and I l ove telling stories
If someone was a blind DM and was planning on mostly ‘theatre of the mind’ gaming, and wanted to become an expert (through repitition and exposure) to a specific adventure/campaign/setting, which would you recommend? I would like something from level 1 to 15 is I guess my target. Out of the Abyss? Candlekeep Mysteries? Spelljammer? Something official, self-contained (for the most part), something with some replayability from the DM perspective. Any suggestions? Also I say official because I don’t want to have to add a bunch of homebrew items. Any suggestions on which I should choose?
I wouldn't worry about becoming an expert
You'll continue to improve and develop new skills as you play
Oh, I mean expert with respect to that specific ‘module’. After a couple of times going through it, I will get faster/better as I have to look up things less. I’m already an ‘expert’ hahaha.
Why do you want to become an 'expert' in a single module?
Most people run a module once, maybe twice, and then go on to a new one
So I can offer to DM for more people, and as I go through it I’ll get ‘smoother’, increasing mine and hopefully my players enjoyment.
Being blind, I’m 4 times slower than everyone in referencing… If I do it enough though, I am the reference.
I can build all types of stuff, except for plots and stories it seems. Lol
In that case, I'd suggest that there is no right or wrong answer here.
Go for whichever one excites you the most.
I’ve not read any of them in the event I get to play through in the future. Like which has the least need of mapping?
From the adventures I have read, I think Storm King's Thunder doesn't have many complicated maps
It doesn’t, the squares are just larger scale
Cool. The one about the underdark, can’t think of the name (Waterdeep …) I would guess that one almost all maps.
@waxen eagle if you need some help please let me know
There is Dungeon of the Mad Mage, which is a 23 floor megadungeon
The Underdark adventure is Out of the Abyss
I have a player on my server who is blind and has been playing DnD for more than 20 years
I started playing in 1989.
Hey ive been trying to find a D&D group never played before though

so can someone explain DM's to me beyond the basics?
Lost Mine of Phandelver has a good overview. You can check it out for free here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop/introduction#TheDungeonMaster
But if you had any specific questions, feel free to ask!
i have submitted to the 'looking-for-dm' portion.. how would i be contacted if accepted and i assume that it will take a while being noobish?
Just made a post in looking for DM's
Anyone interested in your post should be reaching out through direct message — so make sure you’ve got Discord set to allow DMs.
How long it takes all depends on who’s currently looking and what they’re looking for.
But the quickest way to get results, IMO, is to instead browse through #looking-for-players and contact a few people yourself.
Even if you're like, super new?
As for this, the link I sent above is the best answer I know of for that question — which is why I sent it. 😜

Hello this is my first time doing dnd beyond and my first dnd experience ever
Welcome to the most amazing hobby in the world 🙂
Oh

Oh
ye
well of course
its more whenever you have time to do it type of campaign and advwnture
like the creator of this world has gone so far into detail that almost everything is self explanitory and could be dont by urself unless you wanna adventure with others than we set up a time to all join in

This is my first time and I have autism and adhd I don't understand any of this
It's totally okay to be overwhelmed! If you want some more resources on learning how to play and where to start check the pinned messages in this channel: #dnd-newcomers message
If you get confused or have any questions, everyone here is happy to help
Where do I start
so the free basic rules are pinned to this channel. you can start reading them if you didn't already.
there are also some other helpful links in that pin.
as for finding games. the channels above are made so people can find each other for games. there are other places on the internet too to find games but those are the ones on this server.
Many DMs are willing to teach newbies how to play.
oh and as far as them time investment goes. Session length can vary a lot between groups but is ususally oriented around what everyone is comfortable with. I had 2 hour sessions and I had 7 hour sessions
hello, how's everybody? also pretty new to this whole thing, just made my frist char.
Hello i have never played before but i am looking at playing with a group of friends from another game wondering if anyone would be able to help us out?
Depends what help you need; ask questions and people will try and provide answers
almost all of us are going to be first time players
i think only one of us has played before so i dont even know what we will need help with
i have always wanted to try and play but never had any friends to try it with
Lost Mines of Phandelver is free on the website and is the intro adventure from the first Starter Set and is designed for new players
hey me too im trying to set up a group with some people from another game i play if your interested in trying to join us and learn with us let me know
Hey I'm new to D&D and still trying to figure things out4
I'm DM by default and don't know what to start with to create the story
I don't know how to run a game
Have you tried reading the Basic Rules? A link to them is pinned in this channel
if you are already familiar with the rules, then there are several options if you need help running a game. Some examples:
the Dungeon Master's Guide gives some guidance on world buildung, variant rules, creating monsterns and encounters
you can run a published adventure
you can check out Matt Collville's "running the game" series on youtube
I believe Lost Mines of Phandelver (Original Starter Set adventure) is free for all D&D Beyond users which is designed to teach new players and DMs how to play the game
Why not
Hi! I’m newish to dnd, I partially played a campaign with a new-to-the-game DM and kinda sorta figured some stuff out, but I still have a lot to learn
Welcome 🙂
Me and my buddies are almost new to dnd as a whole just need a dm to make learning fun for us! is it pretty hard to learn or no?
It's a bit like most games - spend some time with the rules and you should get the general mechanics down fairly quickly. I also recommend watching some videos of folks playing (check YouTube or Twitch for some D&D streams - just remember that most of these are oriented towards entertainment first rather than teaching the rules of the game). That said, there is lots of intricacies as you start to delve into the classes and subclasses and other areas of the rules beyond basic mechanics.
Are there any channels you could recommend for new players? I watched a couple videos by dungeon dudes and they seemed informative. Don’t know any of the creators for this niche though
This channel is a great place to start
Oh for YouTube?
Dungeon Dudes "Dungeons of Drakkenheim" is pretty good.
They don't get too crazy with homebrew rules or anything like that and while the setting is very homebrew (e.g. not an official setting published by D&D) they do a good job of stying true to the rules as written.
Hi, I am a new player and don't know much. I would like to play but don't know how. if anyone would like to help me figure out how to play and maybe play a game just DM me.
Check out the pinned messages here on the channel - lots of good resources to help get you started.
@eager venture @rich elbow @subtle hollow I will be glad to help you guys out
hey
Hey im new to Dming, How do I create more roles?
Could you clarify, what do you mean?
Im drying to make some private channels and I dont have any roles
So I can’t make private channels
hi i’m new to dnd and i really want to play, how to i create my own like character or like i’m not so sure how it’s called?
Welcome! You can create a character on D&D Beyond for free right here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters
If you click “Show Help Text”, it’ll walk you through the basics.
But really it just follows the first few chapters of the Basic Rules (also free) in order.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
If you’ve got any specific questions, though, ask away!
Hi! I'm not new to D&D as a whole, but I am new to online D&D.
I have purchased the PhB, though not an online version. This means my Racial/Class/Subclass options are limited on DnDbeyond, yeah?
Correct. You will have access to the options that are in the free Basic Rules, plus any books you purchase digitally on D&D Beyond. In addition, if you have a character in a campaign group and someone is able to share their content, you'll have access to options from any of the books being shared, but only for that character.
If you have the physical book, you can use DDB’s homebrew tools to recreate that content for free. (For private use only, though; please don’t publish it.)
Alternatively, you can buy just the parts you need, like a single subclass.
Whatever you spend on those gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Is this where I can ask about what my lvl 1 char can do, or is there another place?
Could be rules, I guess, but it's mostly me being confused I think.
Here is fine if you're new to D&D
Do you have a character made already?
Yay! Yes, I made a Wizard, going Bladesinger. She attacks a bandit with a shortsword, casting Booming blade. Hits. Now, that is a spell attack, I understand.
hey folks! :)
been dming for 35 years
illustrating small press rpgs for 20
creating content on dmsguild for 4
streaming pdf game creation for 1
happy to be here! AMA
The question is, can she get away with Disengage, or something that blocks an attack of opportunity? I know level 1 doesn't have a lot of options yet.
Is there another part to her Attack action?
Booming Blade has a casting time of 1 Action, and that would be the Cast a Spell action, not the Attack action.
Hi FilKearney!
Disengage is also an action, and you typically only get one action per turn.
So, my WHOLE action is the cast booming blade and stick the bandit, right?
So you’ll probably have to choose between Booming Blade and Disengage.
Yep
Ok, was afraid of that. Thanks so much! So, just to be clear, a Spell Action is the same as a Melee action for turn purposes?
You can choose either the Cast a Spell action or the Attack action (or another) on your turn, yes.
Perfect. Thank you spamandtuna.
On your turn, you can move a distance up to your speed and take one action.
The most common actions you can take are described in the Actions in Combat section. Many class features and other abilities provide additional options for your action.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#YourTurn
Ok. I will re-read that section. I think it will make more sense now.
What do you do if you have a character idea where you know what you want them to be, like race and attitude, but don't know what you want them to do, i.e. class?
roll dice
Hi I'm new and interested in playing some games

Ask in #character-discussion!
whats the difference between army of takhisis and knights of solamnia
Hi all, I'm brand new to playing DND, and my first game is tomorrow night - wish me luck? My question, which is probably very dumb, is about magic missile. Am I understanding correctly that I cast / roll it in DNDBeyond to determine how much damage each dart will do, and then that value is multiplied by the number of darts that I should cast according to the spell description? Thanks in advance!
Yes, that is true
You roll once, and each dart deals that much damage
Also, good luck!
Thank you so much! Fingers crossed.
Heya, Im new to the DnD stuff ^^;
The names Shadow!
i only know the whole rolling system and some cathegories (elves, mages, rogues, etc) not all of them
Im also looking forward on participating in campains and learn my skills and also know a bit better the whole character developing
Lore-wise, they’re opposing armies in the War of the Lance.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1324-what-is-dragonlance-krynn-a-world-at-war
If you’re asking because of the post in #dnd-announcements, there’s a little competition happening here <t:1666368000:R> at <t:1666368000:t>.
hello everyone, I'm new to D&D and I want to participate in tomorrows campaign but I can't choose a side because it says I don't have permissions. How can I get those permissions to choose the side I want to be on? And does this automatically link to the D&D beyond page so I can roll the dice? How does that all work?
Just head to #dnd-announcements and add a reaction for the team you want to join.
The game is entirely here on Discord, though. No dice necessary.
Hallo, I’m a new DM, joined dnd about a month ago. Im gonna run Dragon Of Icespire Peak soon, if anybody has ran this campaign before could ya give me some tips?
We actually have a dedicated forum post for Dragons of Icespire Peak
Is it alright if I know where the channel is?
Howdy, I am new to DnD and know nothing about it but am willing to learn it. I have a character made in DnD Beyond but I do not know where to go from there
Have you read the basic rules? Not all of them, but skimmed the bits that pertain to playing the game?
The basic rules?
Yes, they're linked in this channels pinned posts
Alright. I read the basic rules
Head over to #750812887697588356 and put a post (using the format), and skim through the #looking-for-players for a game that might fit you.
@crisp cloak I already put in a post in #750812887697588356

Hey my friend group is starting dnd and I am making my character online, I should I balance my stats for my ability scores
I rolled 16 11 9 11 12 16
I’m a half elf so I get plus 2 charisma
And I added plus 1 score to my intelligence and wisdom
I’m a fighter
That's more a question for #character-discussion
Oh ok thanks
Is anyone here a fan of Doctor I need help creating a Character as a Mixture of THE Doctor and River Song(The Many Husbands of River Song period)
#character-discussion can help with that!
Hello! I need help with real life time during downtime during long rests or between quests. Do I let the characters do mundane stuff for 2 real life minutes or do I just do time skips? Sorry if my wording seems weird, im new to dnd
Time in game can move as fast or as slow as you need.
I’m thinking of starting playing any ideas on what race a new person should be ??? (Thank u if u respond)
Any race should be fine for a new player 🙂
This page lists the playable races
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
The races in the Basic Rules are the ones you can use for free in the character builder
Thank u I Already chose to be a lizardfolk fighter chaotic good with a fear of spiders but still thank u so much
Thank u for all the support
hi!! I’m completely new to DnD. where could i find the rules/ how do I get started? tysm!!
The Basic Rules are in the pinned messages of this channel 🙂
thanks :))
Any tips for new players (thank you so much if you respond)
Have you read the Basic Rules?
A bit why
Just checking as that is usually a good first step 🙂
Otherwise be prepared to make mistakes, but don't worry about it as you learn
So a good way I learned is by getting thrown into a game with experienced players who were cool with it
Try to understand what all the abilities/spells and features on your character sheet let you do
You probably want to find a campaign starting at Level 1 so you don't have too much stuff to worry about
To some helping you take your turn and teach you things like that is fun and rewarding
Thank u I have a week off to research and then a day to actually make the character and then play my first game with friends wish me luck
Have fun and remember if someone says “free magic item” its cursed.
still waiting for my friends current campaign to finish before i play my first game, but after watching some other games online i had a question about shops
are you typically supposed to know what you are looking for when you walk in? like "hello do you have any magic shields for me the cleric?" im coming from most other games where the shop inventory is just presented to you. do you ever just get a list of what the shop sells? are you supposed to have some knowledge when you walk in?
It depends on how your DM runs them honestly
Honestly I have seen dms go either way. “It would require a knowledge check for the item depending on its origin, then a roll to determine the chance of it being in the shop” to “opens catalog say what you wanna get and I will tell you the price..bargaining is an option”
Does any new DM have this problem?
DM: “You are in the town of Phandalin, there’s life everywhere.”
Player: “I will purchase some stuff”
DM: “Ok you head to the shop (shows weapon prices)”
Player: “I’ll buy a short bow”
DM: “Okay, you buy a short bow and head to the next location”
I think I rush it too much, anyway I can make it longer?
I am just now starting to get into dnd as a drow but i need a bit of help on knowing how the game works and how to play and or what i need for it
Thank you
#dm-discussion can give you some advice there.
Hey, so I JUST learned about D&D and I don't know what I'm doing or how to get started...
Can anyone help me? 😅
My number one suggestion is to read the free basic rules to get a feel for the game mechanics. You don't have to know it all but having some familiarity with the rules will help in playing the game. Also check out the pinned messages on this channel - lots of great resources to help get you started.
Oh, okay. Thanks!
If you have a specific question about something, feel free to ask here or in an appropriate channel.
my physical copy of the players handbook arrived today, next day or so is now occupied haha
Hi, just a question as I'm gonna be playing my first campaign as a DM in a few days, we're gonna play the Essential Kit campaign, and I was wondering is there a way to get the maps of this campaign somewhere ? Like if i take the digital version on DnDBeyond, are the maps included and printable ?
All D&D Beyond digital books include high resolution version of the maps you find in the books, as well as player versions
thanks !
im new and i did create my character and im unsure how to play it correctly
what type of character are they?
can i call myself them/they?
Of course you can
how?
Change your nickname to add (they/them) at the end, like I've done with (he/him)
oh boy
Unless you mean in game, in which case people usually just say something like "my characters pronouns are "they/them/theirs""
oh
It's just a part of how you describe your character
Why would you make them deaf?
Because it may reflect their life experience and be easier for them to roleplay?
For me it’s like, you actively gib them in combat.
But I can understand since I made my first character half blind in their other eye
I'm not sure what you mean by this? If you're saying they'd be at an inherent disadvantage in combat, not necessarily
You can build the fantasy of the game in such a way that a disability that might disadvantage you in real life doesn't have to in the world you play in
That's the beauty of D&D

Hi folks. I'm new to DnD. I have a few friends with the starter set, so hoping to play a game soon. We've also bought the Blade Runner RPG to try later
I created a character, and would like some opinions and suggestions for it. Should I post it here or in character discussion?
#character-discussion would be the better place
Hi all. Use to play 22 years ago. Just started playing again a couple weeks ago since my fiancés best friends husband has been playing for years and wanted us to play. He’s been dm and we’ve done about 3 shorter sessions. Due to my job I travel a lot and spend most my time in Japan so won’t get to play in person much. I want to start playing online. Anyone willing to help or let a newbie join their party?

Helloo!
Hello! Also total new player here, been reading the ground rules of DnD and will be starting on creating my first actual character this week!
Played my first game ever the other night ... my first roll ever in-game was a constitution check for which I got a 19 ... not bad! Overall, while I sometimes felt awkward and/or dumb, I had a blast, and I can't wait to play again.
That is extremely unusual. Why would your first check be a constitution check? What were you making a check for?
I was written into an existing campaign and immediately after “finding” me, the party headed into a sewer to march. Constitution check to see if we could hold our breath and withstand the noxious fumes.
Con checks are normally the rarest ability check. Con is 79% hit points, 20% saves, and 1% checks.
Oh okay, fair enough.
It may have been a saving throw - now that you remind me that those exist … (like I said, I’m new) …
It was most likely a save. Con saves are quite common.
Anyway glad you had fun!
how does one make a Kenku? im trying to do so with DnD beyonds character sheet and i do not see it.
frankly im trying to figure this all out to be honest.
Own Monsters of the Multiverse.
if you don't own that book, you cannot select kenku.
i see i see, then can i do something like the Kenkus ability to mimic voices with the other bird race or no?
No, because Aarakocra don't have that ability.
gotcha.
I'm having issues with placing a map downloaded from dndbeyond onto roll20 when I click and drag it over the canvas nothing happens, it can be played if I change the layer to objects but its way too bad in resolution what do i do?
This channel isn't really for getting help using roll20
Maybe want #dm-discussion or better yet, the roll20 forums
how do i join a campaign
You go to #looking-for-players and contact a DM via private message if their game interests you
ok thanks
How long should a backstory be?
That’s really up to you and your DM. There’s no right or wrong answer.
Mine tend to be short: no more than three paragraphs and full of holes. Just enough to answer what needs to be known at the start.
thank you homie, now to find a dm lol.

Im new to DnD Beyond and I have a question about the Marketplace buys. At the top of DnD Beyonds website there is a link that takes you to the DnDstore.wizards.com that says you can buy both physical and digital content. With this being linked from DnD Beyond does the digital allow us to redeem the book purchases in DnD Beyond or not?
As of right now, the only product where they're bundling a digital & physical copy together is the upcoming Dragonlance release. For all the other products, they are separate purchases.
ok thank ya
That’s no longer true.
All of the bundles here include the physical item as well as content on D&D Beyond.
https://dndstore.wizards.com/us?icid_medium=article&icid_source=ddb&icid_campaign=campaign-case&icid_content=dnd-store
So yes, the Dragonlance preorders and the rules gift sets include both versions.
ok, the rules giftset is what i wanted to get
And the terrain cases come with digital-only copies of the DMG (for the terrain case) or the MM (for the creature case).
hi guys, what king of plateform do you use to host your game session?
My groups use D&D Beyond for character sheets and Owlbear Rodeo for maps. The online groups all use Avrae, and I use it as a DM tool for the in-person groups, too.
This article has some other worthy suggestions:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
I use foundry VTT, but also have played on Roll20 and Owlbear rodeo in the past
I've never played using VTT. I'm hoping to jump into some one shots to see what they're like.
how do i start my campaign?
Where can i find help with the homebrew tool on dnd beyond? I want to homebrew and sublass and need some help navigating
typically either in #ddb-support or #homebrew
Thanks Colossus
The simplest answer is “get your friends together and start talking,” but is there something specific you’re having trouble with?
ill be playing dnd for the first time soon any tips thnx in advance
Make sure everyone at the table, including you, is having fun.
Also try and have some familiarity with the rules - don't have to have it memorized by any means but understanding skill checks and attack rolls will greatly improve the flow of the game.
Hi, I'm a total beginner. I want to start playing d&d but im not really sure how... I don't know anyone into it and I also don't know how to play the game. I started to make a character and I know I want to be a player not a dm. How do I start?
look at the pinned messages on this channel, they will link you a number of guides as well as the basic rules.

otherwise, there are plenty of facebook groups, /lfg on reddit or roll20 to look for online games as well
oh and if you want to find in person games, maybe ask friends or family if they are interested to try the game, otherwise, check out if there are game stores near to your location
the biggest tips I have:
- learn how your character works, the DM has enough to deal with already
- D&D is a team game, try to make sure everyone at the table has fun
- dont worry to much about making mistakes. learning together is fun too!
- no D&D is better than very bad D&D (so don't stay at tables if they are toxic or you feel unsafe)
Thx
And how does the game actually work like, if your a player how do you join someone's game.
And if your a dm how do you get players to join?
P.S I just got discord so I have idea how this works but I'm figuring it out 😂😂
No idea*
well, if you play in person, you find other people who are interested, like friend or family or people at your local gaming store and figure it out together.
online, there are servers and websites were players can look for games or DMs can look for players
here on this server there are the following channels

Thank you, Playing in person isn't possible for me though I live on a farm in the middle of nowhere 😂
When I go to join a game I stop cause I do t know what all that info they post means ?
Do you have to wait for an invite to join someone's game after posting your post format ?
If you’ve posted in #750812887697588356, anyone interested should contact you directly.
If you want a more proactive approach, you can look through the posts in #looking-for-players as well and contact them instead.
I'm using DnD beyond so do I have to join a game that's using DnD beyond?? I've been trying to get this right for hours I have no idea how this all works 😭 and what means what
Is DnD beyond even capable of online gaming or is it just a character app?
What tools are or aren’t allowed by any specific game are up to that group.
Tools?
But on this server, at least, you should have no trouble finding one that lets you use DDB.
That’s ultimately what DDB is: a set of digital tools for playing D&D.
I'm having nothing but trouble
I can’t help you with that part, I’m afraid.
It can take a little while (days rather than hours) to find a game
But new games get posted all the time.
The main thing is I don't understand all the terminology
Such as?
Thanks for the help guys
I'm slowly learning but all the things about DnD in general, it's just so much info😂
It's definitely a lot. 🤣
have you read through the basic rules?
But the folks here are happy to answer any questions you've got.
finding a game is nothing thats instant. it can take days or even weeks depending on different factors
so you need to be a little patient
I’m looking to start a campaign with my cousins over long distance, what should I use for a platform?
this is what i would suggest, discord for chat, roll20 for the map and dnd beyond for the character sheet
This article has some other good recommendations:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
that's a useful vid
Spelljammer is going to be the first campaign I ever play. Are there race restrictions since it’s in space essentially? Is that just DM dependent? Can I be a hill dwarf in space? 😂
Ultimately it's up to your DM.
Ooooh a hill dwarf in space would be HILARIOUS 🤣
Hi👋
hi
Anybody know where I can find dnd campaigns for busy dads?
As a busy dad myself, I find play-by-post games are a lot easier to fit into my schedule.
They do pop up from time to time in #looking-for-players, but it’ll take some diligence (and patience) to find a good match.
Can attest: Not gonna find any groups overnight.
That’s true.
I've gotten some nibbles but had to edit "I can't pay for sessions" on my LFG posts.
Just give it time, and you’ll find one.
Hello everyone!
Hiyo
so for those of you who have found games online like in the looking for player channel: how quickly do you typically need to respond
like is this the type of thing where I need to refresh all the time and message/apply asap?
Generally expect it to be similar to a job application process - coordinating peoples schedules can be challenging and complicated.
is it normal for campaigns to start the same day they post looking for players?
Probably not in general
that seems like an insane turn around to me but a lot of posts today had sunday as the game date
okay
But if they already had most of the group ready, sure.
welcome! Take a look at the pinned messages here on the channel - lots of good resources to help get you started with D&D and DnDBeyond.
Hi everyone. I have limited experience with the game and the group I played with fell apart due to scheduling clashes. So figured I try find an online game. I'm New Zealand based.

So after some consideration I'm about to buy some books for me and some friends, I thought of buying the digital versions for the additional books Xanathar, Tasha, Sword Coast (and as it's a bundle Player's Handbook) to have them accessible for character creation on DnDBeyond (QoL). And buying the physical form for Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual.
My question is, should I add the physical form of the Player's Handbook or the DnDBeyond (pdf ?) version is good enough ?
We plan to play at my place, so everyone is physically present
DndBeyond version isn't a pdf, but you can search it via the website or the mobile app. It is up to you and your group which method for checking rules question is faster
Remember that DNDBeyond is online, so you will need internet, but the mobile app can download the books for offline viewing.
Ok so basically just what everyone prefers ? gonna have to check with my friends then
Thanks !
Btw is it the correct channel to ask questions about dming or is there a specific channel for new dm ?

Thanks !
I prefer digital. You can check out the free Basic Rules if you want an idea of what to expect:

hi guys! I'm very new to dnd but I always wanted to try it. Have been trying to finish Octopath Traveler for switch and enjoying the story and that's kind of what encouraged me to try to join a dnd community.... you can call me Kai, nice to meet you 😄

Ollo peoples
I learned or heard about DnD from Critcrabs channel among other things and it seemed like a fun thing to do with friends and people with common interests
I feel like my only bump in the round for me would be thr character creation since idk how restrictive it can be but, I think I'll be able to past that part
Welcome! If you’re building a character on D&D Beyond, you can click “Show Help Text” when you start. It’ll walk you through each step as you go.

I just joined.
I played my very first ever session last night. A Halloween one shot my friend made up. We had to escape an amusement park that the cult of the sleeper had infiltrated. It was super fun, we were all 16-17 year olds who unlocked latent powers as the game progressed. Think I’m hooked now 😂
yeah, D&D has that kinda affect on people
What is the Dragonlance Victors role?
there was an event to celebrate the release of Dragonlance, where people could choose to join one of two factions. The side with the most members at the end were the victors
Awesome. Sorry I missed it
@stable chasm attempting to solicit access to content sharing is against the D&D Beyond terms of service
Nah, there was an actual game. Each side had five clues to decipher. Each answer was a codeword that, when entered successfully, unlocked the next clue. The winning side was the one that solved their five clues the fastest.
Pretty sure the winning side had fewer members, in fact.
Actually the Reddit mods asked, and it’s not against TOS
so i started a DND club at my school and a bunch of people joined who barley know how to play dnd and i wanna do a kahoot with them but i dont know the sort of questions to ask them for them to learn about it without being bored. i already have shown them the basics of dnd, like what races there are and what classes there are etc etc but i want them all to be confidant about playing it and stuff so how could i help them learn about the game without making it boring? what questions can i ask them?
i didnt know what channel to post this in but since its about me teaching new players i thought that it would be wise to put it in here 👁️
I can not comment on what someone on Reddit is alleging, but we do not allow people to share a campaign URL here to just share content or ask for such things. The Campaign tool along with content sharing allows groups to share their content with one another (just like how an in-person group might have a single copy of the PHB and share it).
Joining someone's campaign without playing/speaking/knowing them, just to get content for free, is not the intention and is not something we allow to be posted, either here or on our forums. I'd also advise that individuals on Reddit would have less knowledge on what is or is not allowed by D&D Beyond than the Moderators and team here.
Hey! I have never played D&D before! Looking a group willing to help me out a bit in the beginning. I'm in EST, available Tuesday and Thursday, or any other day after 9-10pm. My current character is a Half elf bard, please send any tips and tricks my way🙏🙏

Welcome
My apologies, but I don't really understand your question. I'm not sure if english isn't your first language, or if you just made a typo. I'm assuming you are asking if there are opportunities for new players to play, and the answer is "of course!" You just have to find a group and schedule a time to play together.
Hello. I'm new and new to discord. This is a very confusing place.
The server or D&D?
Or Discord as a whole?
Which unfortunately we can't help with
Hello all, I'm really familiar with getting started in a campaign and creating a PC, but not much beyond that as the last 4 games I have started the DM has abandoned before much happened. They were all play by post games over discord. Is there any recommendations for free or low cost options to look at where I won't be abandoned?
There is no guarantee that can be given that a game won't fizzle
That's just one of the risks
Well that's unfortunate.

I have 0% experience in DND, I don’t know where to start at all, I listen to podcasts on DND (😅 that’s basically my only knowledge of the game). I want to play but not sure where to find a DM willing to coach I rookie like me, I created a character on the DND beyond website (though I’m not sure how well I did). Any advice on how to start would be greatly appreciated.
For finding a DM, we have #looking-for-players (reply to posts you find interesting via private message, many DMs welcome newcomers)

I'm joining a campaign next week, i have a character all set up mostly due a friends help. But would it be wrong to have like a notebook so i can remember money health stuff, inventory, that kinda stuff
absolutely not! You can even take notes on the adventures and events happening in the campaign, track your personal belongings and relationships, everything!
The more notes the merrier honestly. My DMs always get back to me because I take notes of everything basically xd
Taking notes is a great habit. D&D Beyond though does help track inventory, money, and health for you.
Okay! I just dont want to forget anything and end up messing up😅
That’s for the DM to do /jk
I thought they same which is why I started my Notekeeper journey ^^
I love being the inoffical DM brain /jk
Alr, i mean hey. Gives me a excuse to decorate a notebook
FACTS! decorate the notebook with all them beautiful DnD stickers :0
And doodles, don't forgett doodles.
I might decorate it according to my character. Like her own little notebook maybe?
I keep meaning to buy stickers for my bottles so I can make them unique in work
Ohh yes! I did that too, a friend of mine even drew all my characters and made stickers out of those drawings (i.e. my profile pic)
wait- dnd stickers exist
Redbubble .com is an awesome place to look for dnd related content ^^
All sorts of D&D stuff exists
Plushies, stickers, models, figurines, dice… you name it.
Yeah my bf bought me dice
wait til the dice-goblin-phase kicks in...you will have more than enough dice sooner than u think xD
But the most ive done for dnd is like character art for friends and listening to a podcast. Brand new to this stuff
Oh my god, our dm has a bag of just dice
if you can do art, that's like automatic +rep for DND players lol
Yeah ^^ i made my own art for my character
ohhh love that x3
hello! Im new to dnd and im about to get dragons of stormwreck isle starter set
Hullo! Me and my fiance are relatively new to DnD as we have only been playing for 4 months thus far and are looking for more people to play DND with! Are looking forward to making new friends❤️
In #looking-for-players, do you have to buy the specified game or is it already provided? I'm new and want to know what I'm doing before I buy stuff
What do you mean by "the specified game"?
Game Style
So the things like Tomb of Annihilation are just a form of gameplay?
No, that's a specific adventure, which the DM will already have if they're running it
Alright, thanks
Hey hey, I am quite new to dnd and been watching some games for a few years but only got the courage to start playing this year . Happy to meet new people !
What is the best way to find/build a DnD group? I saw on a Beyond thread that DMs are in short supply.... and I'm a completely new player so...
Patience and diligence!

At the same time players are saying Dms are hard to find , dms are saying players are hard to find. it is very hard to keep a group together for long term games.
Ok
i’m very new to dnd and so i’m having fun making characters,, if i were to choose a druid is there skills that are better to select than others?
I would probably lean into wisdom based skills, like animal handling, perception, insight etc, since that will stack nicely with your highest stat
Like Omegon said, Wisdom-based skills will be the easiest for you to excel at. Perception is one of the most-used skills in the game, Survival is always good for a nature-based character, and I enjoy taking Animal Handling as a Druid or Ranger. It's a pretty situational skill, but it's also very "on-brand" for those classes. Despite Intelligence not usually being a high priority for Druids(though you're obviously free to build your Druid how you want), being proficient in Nature makes a lot of sense. Ultimately though, the best skills to take are the ones that feel right to you. Some people focus on skills for mechanical benefit, i.e. skills that align with their ability scores or ones that are mostly likely to get used. Some people take skills specifically because their group is lacking someone proficient in them, and they want to round out the party's skillset. Some focus solely on what fits their character's story. For most, it's some combination of the three. They're all valid ways to go, so my biggest piece of advice is to read through the section of the rules about the skills so you have a good idea of what each one is typically used for.
As a Druid, you're going to be using Wisdom for your Spellcasting.
A byproduct of this is that you're innately going to have a decent Animal Handling, Perception, Insight, Medicine, Survival, because those Ability (Skill) checks use the Wisdom ability.
You could choose to be even better (such as Perception) at one/some of those, or branch to other skills.
It ultimately depends on who you want to make. After all, Intelligence (Nature) is more like book smarts on it, whereas the Wisdom (Medicine) side is more about finding this herb from this local environment and it'll help this horrendous wound. One of many potential, and DM dependent, scenarios. We can't be definitive, but Perception is very very very easy to apply to almost every game ever, so I can highly recommend Perception.
um new to dnd i already created my charecter how do get a dnd group

There aren't rules of magic, but there are spellcasting rules
As for "ideals", that's what you decide as DM when putting together your world

I posted on the site looking for dm, got one reply and a discord chat. I just figured it would be quicker to ask here.
There’s a ton of useful information on YouTube about getting into online play if you don’t have any local options.
Once you have an idea of what’s going on I’d recommend trying a few one-shots before trying to hop into a campaign.
Probably a dumb question but how restrictive are the alignments for a character's personality? Can a lawful good character be convinced to break the law in the name of good or commit evil actions under the pretense of furthering a greater good down the line?
Honestly, it depends on how your table treats alignment.
Best speak to your DM about it
One thing I always like to remind people is that the Lawful alignment isn’t restricted to the “law of the land”. It simply means that a character adheres to a set of morals or a code of some sort.
One can make an argument for being a “Lawful” character that broke the laws of the land if said laws contradict the code taken up by the character.
Like I said, varies from table to table
Definitely
Thank you both. I'll be sure to inquire whenever I can get into my first game.
That would be a question better suited to #ddb-avrae-help
okie
I would say, if the KNOW they are going against their alignment then there are repercussions. If they are tricked into thinking it is within their alignment (usually through dice roles) then it isn't with repercussions other than RP depression when they find out.
I take it for new players it's kinda hard finding a group to play with
Not just new players — all players. 😅
And then when you find a group, the superboss Scheduling rears their head to lay siege to your fun
Can Drow (high) magic use a focus or do they need the components?
That would be more of a question for #dnd-rules
Oh alright
Oh, that wasn’t meant to be discouraging. Just trying to put things into perspective. It takes patience and diligence for anyone to find a good game, but when you get the right group, the payoff is totally worth it.
It wasn't I'm mainly tired of reading all the books and all the rules I rather play. But my friends here where I live ain't into it. So I have books and everything no one to play with. Plus in stuck at home till I heal from my appendix being removed. It wasn't discouraging at all just made me go this well take a while.
hi all
Hello everyone
I've been in like 4 proper games in about as many years, and I'm DMing a game on top.
It's for everyone, because it's not a one-size fits all like a much more rigid game like 40k or MTG. It's got nuances like levels, settings, character creation rules, homebrew rules, and so on.
Hello everyone I'm new to d&d and wanted to know how should I get started
I've never played adventures league, but am looking at this for an opportunity to play more regularly.
During the monthly virtual tabletops, is it a single day, multiple days, or is there options?
Well I am really only able to play weekends from 10:00AM - 10:00PM.
Oh. Sorry that wasn't meant as a response to you (though I'm happy to try to answer).
Well I hope you find your answer. (Sorry)

Hi all, my teenage son would like to join a new D&D campaign, he has played a couple of short games and knows his way around a character sheet so he isn't exactly brand new. Do any of you recommend anything suitable?
I would recommend finding a group of people you all know to play with (easier to have shared expectations and familiarity with personalities) but if you want to play with random folks on the internet you can use the #looking-for-players to find DM's trying to find players for their games.

We have #character-discussion for getting feedback on your characters
Hi
hi
Hello I am new
Hi!
Welcome! Check the pinned message on the channel for lots of useful links to help get you started.
Hello everyone. I'm a complete newb to d&d. I just wanted to ask, is it possible to play online ?
Very much so, a lot of people play online and there's even a link to an article on getting started playing online pinned in this channel
Oh wow. That's interesting. Because I downloaded the app and created a character. Didn't know what to do from there. Lol
So there are lots of ways to play online. Some people play via voice only with physical sheets and dice in front of them, describing everything
Some people use digital character sheets that share dice rolls
Some people use discord bots like our own Avrae that link to character sheets, track initiative, and do all sorts of cool automations
And some people use virtual tabletops to share maps and tokens
You can play by text instead of voice, either in real time like we're talking now, or asynchronously via a forum
Basically as long as you've got some way to communicate, you can play online
Alright. Sounds like a lot of information to take in. So I better do my research and take a look at the links. Thanks man.
Last question, what do you know about 20roll
I think that's the name.
roll20 is a virtual tabletop and one of the most commonly used (because it supports many different types of TTRPG and you can buy official products there)
It's the VTT I use; it's got a very steep learning curve but is quite robust
Alright then. Time to start. I'll take a look at the links. Thank you.
Hey, I got my first campaign I'm entering tomorrow and was asked to bring my own character sheet.
I made one with the help of a friend, but got no clue how to start on the background or features (since the guy told me to solo that part).
Anyone got a useful tool for that or a place I can find references or inspiration from?
Hope I can ask this here, sry if not :I
Are you asking for help with knowing how backgrounds work, or just want to pick one that fits your character?
Mostly trying to write one, but I suck at it (basically)
I think you might be conflating backgrounds (which are typically chosen from a list of available options) and backstories (which are you own individual narrative for the character’s personal history).
More on backgrounds here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules#Backgrounds
Hi, I got interested in DnD since yesterday, it looks fun and immersive! I'd like to know how pbp games are generally played, especially asynchronous ones
There’s lots of different ways to do PBP games!
The ones I’ve done have all been on Discord, using D&D Beyond and Avrae.
https://avrae.io/
Avrae my beloved. Makes pbp games so much more convenient
(I even use it as a DM tool for my in-person games, too.)
Same... Or to just quickly look up stuff
Do i need to fully read a new player's guide? I'm about half-done atm
That’s up to you, and whatever you want to get out of it.
tbh I'm hesitant to join any games bc I'm afraid to be a hindrance, this is all very new to me and there seems to be a bit of math involved
Thats one of the advantages of using D&D Beyond and Avrae. It does all the math for you.
And don't be afraid. The community as a whole is helpfull to new players and many DM's have no problem with helping out a new player. As long as you have the basic rules memorised the game becomes very easy to understand.
sounds great! 😄 To pbp in Discord, do people play on this server or join DM's?
Not on this Discord no. We provide game rooms but those are ment for voice games. The main way to look for play by post games are our looking for channels and looking for PBP specific games in #looking-for-players or you can go to #looking-for-community where you find Westmarch servers. These servers are a more broad approach to the play by post format with way more players. If you want to dip your toes into pbp I would however reccomend to look for a regular game first as westmarch servers can be a bit overwhelming.
what does westmarch mean?
It is a form of playing D&D. Where you have one or several characters with changing DM's and rarely a cohesive story aside of a hub area where the Characters can interact outside of adventures
I see, thanks!

Me to man me to
Welcome! There’s a bunch of helpful links in the pinned messages here that can get you started, but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!
Umm yeah so how does one go about creating a balance/good character
Depends on what you’re looking to build. Each class has a Quick Start suggestion that’ll have some good advice.
If you’re creating it on D&D Beyond, you can enable “Show help text” when you start, too, which will walk you through the basics.
If you want any specific advice for your character, the folks in #character-discussion can help.
Tnx
Quick question. Is the homebrew only for people who create home brew?
But, Hi! I just joined!
Homebrew is any custom material created by folks and not by D&D
I’m not sure of your question though - can you clarify?
For new players, I always recommend coming up with a character concept you want to role play. The dice and numbers are secondary to the story. Don’t let mechanics bog you down. The group you play with can help with all the rolls and number crunching.
If you’re talking about using published homebrew from the dndb website, then you’d have to be a subscriber to add to your collection
You can, however, create your own homebrew to use in your games, and you don’t need to publish it to do so
hey yall! im not new to D&D but im new to D&DB, i was wondering if i could get advice on how to get started once i do my character sheets? :3
Generally I'd recommend building a character aligned with the group and/or campaign you'll be playing in. That way the DM and other players can help create a cohesive party that will work well for the expected story line and campaign arc.
Oh I see! How do you join campaigns though? I’ve been exploring the site and can’t really find much :3

Okay so I’m really new to the dnd scene but I love playing and would really appreciate if someone had a spot for me in a campaign and could help me learn more about the game.
Are cooperative attacks possible? For example if you kick an enemy and stumbling back they lower their defenses, allowing the party's rogue to land a devastating blow?
yes and no.
you can for example knock an enemy prone on your turn and then the rogue can get a melee attack with advantage on their turn (or use their reaction if they readied it)
but due to turn order, this might be hard or impossible to pull off consistently in some situations
and of course "stumbling back" is not a mechanic 5e. Older editions had a condition called "flat footed" that was more like that
That yes and no is correct.
There is a good array of options that can help, such as a Battle Master fighter using trip attack to get someone prone, or a Rune Knight fighter using a feature to restrain an enemy, leaving them easier to attack.
Or, use the Help action.
Right, the closest thing would be to use the help action to give the next attack advantage
What's the general difference between a champion and a battle master?
champion: crits slighly more often. Battlemaster: can make a wide array of combat maneuvers to enhance their attacks or support their allies
Their features, really.
A Champion is just better at landing critical hits, being athletic, and gets another fighting style eventually, and that's basically it.
A Battlemaster builds a repertoire of Maneuvers that can range from launching something 15 feet, tripping, disarming, frightening, and goading (which gives them disadvantage on attacking anyone else but the goader)
Battle master sounds more like a team player
can be, depending on the maneuvers you pick
battlemasters can vary wildly due to maneuver choice
Can rogues do any tricks to confuse the enemy? The non-magic sub classes I mean
not really a definition for confusing them
Confusion is a spell, for example
depends on what you mean with "confuse"
you can take the help action, which could be flavored as confusing someone
Well mechanically speaking do stuff that gives you or the others an advantage
the mastermind rogue can give the help action at range and with a bonus action
Mastermind can take the help action as a bonus action and do its help from up to 30 feet away.
Is it a subclass?
yes
Mastermind is a Rogue subclass, yeah
other than that, technically Soulknife isn't magic, so at their high-high levels they can Stun with their psychic blades.
Which book? That sounds a lot more like a character I'm going for
or go invisible even
and of course in non combat scenarios, you could try to decieve an enemy and make a deception check
mastermind is in xanathars guide to everything
Thanks!
At higher levels, they can also, if taking cover from an attack behind a creature, they can make the attack target that creature instead of themselves. And at highest levels, they can present false thoughts for mind readers, never be forced to tell truth (such as by zone of truth), and if can choose to be treated as truthful by lie-detecting magic.
What do you guys enjoy about dnd the most?
That's probably more of a #dnd-discussion question
Yeah I'll ask it there then
so ive like only played dnd once and didnt rlly get it. but i really want to play so are there any tips people have?
Have a read of the Basic Rules (a link to which is pinned in this channel)
yes
yes what?
oh yeah i read them before hand
ive checked all dnd beyond resources
but i guess i understand it in theory just not in an actual game enviorment
What is it you don't understand?
mainly character building. i think the difficult thing for me is how each campaign wll have a different story and i dont know if like some things that may be allowed in one game wouldnt be allowed in another.
its more of a issue that i just havent been able to experience playing
you could check out some live play campaigns to see how others play dnd
As for knowing what's allowed in a campaign, you ask the DM
Unless you're playing Adventurer's League, there's no way to predict so the best way is to ask
Character building is a lot of fun, and many people do it before they join their first game, just because they are so excited to get started. But the honest truth is, you should probably find a campaign to join before making your character. That way, you know exactly whats allowed, and you get to tailor your new character to better fit the story and the world of this campaign.
ok on dnd beyond its giving me +5 for dmg rolls with rapier. my dex modifier is +3 and my proficiency is +3 so shouldn't i be getting +6 instead of +5?
If you're having an issue with your character sheet and you think something is wrong, #ddb-support is the place to go (include a link to your character sheet)
I'm gonna get into dnd again.
How long has it been?
I could really use some help on how to get back into the game. I played a long time ago, so I vaguely remember all the basics but I’m starting from scratch
Depends how long ago "a long time ago" is, but I would recommend checking out the Basic Rules (a link to which is pinned in this channel) and refreshing yourself
Hello, new guy, never played but kinda wanting to. I'm a little confused by the amount of paid sourcebooks. Am I good with the free stuff or is the paid stuff needed to join campaigns?
you can certainly play the game without paying anything, and often the DM will share their sourcebooks with players, too.
If there’s any specific character options you want (like a new subclass or extra spells), you can buy those individually on D&D Beyond as well.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
Oh thats interesting. Where can i find these individual things? cant seem to find them in market
is it common for people to put a ton of themseleves into characters?
Once you open a book in the marketplace, you can see everything that book contains.
it happens. a lot of players basically play themselves, while others play people who are very different to themselves
Dang man lol. I just give my characters my trauma lol
also not unheard of. Roleplaying is sometimes used by people to deal with their issues in one way or another. totally fine unless it makes the game unfun for other players
uhm im new and idk where to start

Hello

For other new players, how much of this did you have a handle on (as in knew w/o necessarily needing a "cheat sheet") before jumping into your first game/campaign? There's a lot going on with the various rules for various areas. I'm trying to find the balance between not waiting forever to start but also not holding back other people's fun because I'm totally clueless.
I am like 10 sessions with like 3 different dms over a long period of time(at least 6 years). I just jumped in while still learning and getting experience as it goes i guess. But most of the people i am playing with are also new. so we are learning as we go. Whether official or homebrew.
Thanks!
Don't worry about causing problems for other players. Everyone was new at one point. Just make sure its clear to everyone that you're new and learning and just need a little patience from everybody.
Yeah, most groups should be pretty understanding.
Try to get a good idea of what your character can do.
And if you’re not sure how best to respond to a situation, just focus on intent.
“I want to help my friend” or “I want to attack the monster” or “I want to protect myself”.
Once everyone else knows where you’re trying to go, they can help you get there.
Thanks for the advice!
I am a new player and trying to set up a character sheet for a half orc paladin with an oath of conquest and i have no idea how to set it up, help please
Where are you stuck, exactly?
How to build a character sheet and what to include
i recommend, on top of ppl helping you, to watch q tutorial on youtube. it helped me a lot. there is many on youtube
You can create one here on D&D Beyond for free. If you click “Show Help Text” before you start, it’ll walk you through each step of the process.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
But the character builder really just follows the first few chapters of the Basic Rules in order. You can read those for free here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
not sure if this is the correct channel but, how to i pronounce the druid cantrip Shillelagh
The Basic Rules include one free subclass for each class, but for Paladin, that’s Oath of Devotion.
Oath of Conquest can be found here in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything. You can buy just the subclass by itself if that’s all you’re after.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/xanathars-guide-to-everything
I am 99% sure that it is pronounced "shill-lay-lee" (and 1% certain I am about to lose all internet street cred)
Google can sound it out for you here. Just click the little speaker icon.
https://www.google.com/search?q=shillelagh pronunciation
thank you both
"That Irish spell."
Shill Lay Lay, or when being funny, shillylahg
iirc there is more than 1 proper pronunciation but i personally also use shil lay lee
Some say....there's a player still sitting at a table from first edition...waiting for the day that a DM sits down at his table. Others say their spirit haunts Local Game Stores...encouraging everyone to DM so others do not share their fate 😛
It is mostly what we talk about in this server. D&D Beyond is an official toolset for D&D Fifth Edition after all
is there a benefit to getting the players handbook on DDB or should i put that cash towards more sources?
Imo get more content instead of paying twice for a source.
If you have a physical copy of the Player’s Handbook, you can use DDB’s homebrew tools to recreate that content for free. (For private use only, though; please don’t publish it.)
Or you can buy just the parts from it that you want to use, like a single subclass or the feat bundle.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
So there is stuff I'm missing? It looks like I can access the whole book for free digitally. Missing some backgrounds/subclasses from the dropdowns? Why would a DM buy it? I have a 50% off from the physical copy
The Basic Rules are free on D&D Beyond, but only include 1 subclass per class and if a race has subraces, one subrace. It also has one feat and not all the spells
Purchasing the Player's Handbook on DDB would give you all the options
Why would a DM buy it? If they have a master tier subscription they could share the book with their players (up to 12 per campaign, up to 5 campaigns)
But if you're not going to share it, having it as a reference resource could still be useful
Thanks Davyd, that was really helpful. My idea is to invest more in DDB especially if AboveVTT keeps improving with its easy drag and drop from your purchased content
Can't really comment on AboveVTT as it's a third party extension not officially supported by D&D Beyond (and I use roll20), but if you have any more questions about DDB, someone here will be sure to answer them
Howdy, I'm new to this server. I just migrated from the old D&D server

Hi hi, so this place only for dnd beyond or can I find 5e stuff here too?
dnd beyond is a toolset for 5e, so you can chat about 5e stuff here 🙂
D&D Beyond is a digital toolset, for 5e
I believe you probably confused "D&D Beyond" with "One D&D"
D&D Beyond is a website, with a character creator, digital versions of all the books, searchable compendiums of the spells, magic items, and monsters, etc.
One D&D is the playtest material for the 2024 rules revamp
Cool cool, still, place seems like it will be helpful regardless 🙂
I’m looking forward to playing the most basic character, a human fighter, cause vanilla is still a flavor
And starting in December, this will be the official discord for D&D as a whole, not just the one specific for D&D Beyond
To be honest, I love versatility in both character and class, especially when it comes to story.
honestly, same. Fighters are extremely fun. I've played more than a few
There is one joke I still love watching on YouTube.’ Oh, you’re playing a fighter, how basic, YOU HIT HOW MANY TIMES?!’
In my last campaign, I played an Echo Knight - Gloomstalker multiclass. At level 8 I was able to make 8 attacks in a single round
and that jumped to 10 attacks at level 14
Ah, yes, nothing like melting bbegs in turn one XD
especially when you can apply Hunter's Mark on all 8 of them
What I like about fighter, it makes combat easy and fun, which is a good thing cause I find rp just as important
agreed
im guessing it was an action surge shenanigan ?
To that end I think I got a petty neat back story for my first dnd character
Pretty
It involved stacking extra attack, Unleash Incarnation, and dread ambush, for 4 attacks in one action, then using action surge to double that to 8
because both Unleash Incarnation and Dread Ambush say "when you take the attack action" but do not specify that its only once per turn. So 2 attack actions means 2 uses
nice
Dnd is going to be fun
My wife is planning on making a tabaxi warlock first got, closest thing to a witch, and wanting to be a witch, well tabaxi made sense to her.
Her back story is simple, she accidentally blew up her shop and wants to rebuild it, so off to make some coin.
I love it, clean, simple, fits with any campaign easily
nice, hope your first session is a 'blast'
Haaaaa
If you want I’ll share my idea for my character, it’s a bit more complicated
sure
If we're getting into character discussion, its probably a good idea to move the conversation to #character-discussion
Kk
Is this visible?
Yes
Okay I think I know what is it, they go invisible once I read them
interesting. never seen that behaviour.
you using PC or mobile?
Mobile
Ah- see the arrow next to 'General D&D' at the top of the channel list? If it points down v (v GENERAL D&D) then it shows all. If it points > (> GENERAL D&D) then it hides read channels
Click 'General D&D' see if that changes things?
Would paladin be a good choice for first time playing?
one of my players is a first timer and is having fun as a paladin
spells can be a lot for some new players. paladins have a cool feature where you can just use your spell slots to smite things. smite is like an empowered Bonk.
my new pally player just uses that, says he will learn spells when he gets around to it.
Not sure when I might do my first game, but Thanks for the advice, probably making a paladin
A lot of folks will say casters are harder to learn than a martial class like Paladin or Fighter - but honestly, I find new players learn best when they have a class they’re just excited to play. So if you are excited by Paladin, it’s a great place to start! But if it doesn’t interest you, I’d recommend taking a look at the other options. ✌🏼
They are harder to learn. I say that as someone who primarily plays them and whose first character was a Magic-User (because that's what the class was, alongside the Elf). Hard should never stop anyone though. Especially with D&D Beyond making tracking spells SO MUCH EASIER!
It’s official, we ordered the 5e players handbook and we will be hunting for a DM after thanksgiving
Anything you need help with?
welcome to the DnD Party 🎉
