The ranger in my group does far and away the most work in combat
they can be super fun
I enjoy dming one shots
4-3 years, mind you the first 2 years were mostly just random games every couple of months
I think the average time spent playing this game during which you encounter 37 consecutive bad DMs exceeds the time during which this planet has existed.
Oh, I see, you mean 37 in total, both good and bad.
I had the same party for 2 years that was so fun
All bad.
Well not all bad, some of them were good but immediatly ended due to bad players
That’s pretty wild, 37 DMs over 3-4 years is almost a new DM every 6 weeks
That's some extraordinarily bad luck yeah
Where are you finding these tables?
This server and r/lfg
Are u making a new character every time?
Yes
The best groups I found were local tbh
It's a big difference if you can actually talk to someone face to face.
Or just adjusting a premade character
37 wasted characters is crazy
My favorite group was legit across the street
hey im new
i wanna know if there is a website for play D&D or i need to pay the game ?
I live in a small town where everyone's favorite hobby is either hunting or off trailing
The basic ruleset is free.
Search up D&D beyond
You can buy physical or digital copies of sourcebooks like the Player's Handbook.
Check out #learn-to-play and #dnd-newcomers for newbie help in learning the game.
As for playing online, it can absolutely be done for free. At base all you need is the Basic Rules and a table to play with
thank you
Why is it almost 5am 💔
ok thanks 🤍
You’ll usually use some of the following tools for online play:
- D&DBeyond or another character sheet/content hoster
- A Virtual Tabletop (VTT)
- Discord or another communications platform
I should sleep, Gn chat!
Druid/Fighter/Rogue I'd say, I'm giving it a try rn and it definitely feels quite nice so far, its not unique by any means but I also don't have any major criticisms towards it
I feel like it has more overall impact than the Echo Knight and Spores Druid at least, it settling fights within 3 turns is incredibly good without costing a resource (and it can fight just as well even if you run out of spell slots)
Ranger is one of the two gish classes by default, mixing weaponry and magic in a way that's pretty seamless. They have a spell list that is very versatile and able to cover a lot of different party roles, but still able to bring the martial weapons work when it comes down to brass tacks.
I'm playing a Beast Master right now and I'm very happy with it.
Yall think artificer would be good for a wild west campaign [with magic]
Absolutely. Guns galore.
Yes. You can be a quick drawing artillerist, or a gunmaker with a robotic sidekick as a battle smith.
Probably going to go with the gun factory build
I wonder which sub-class would be the best for that
qeustion buying a quiver it comes with arrows right? since i cant find single cost of arrows alone
It's in the PHB. 1 GP for 20 arrows.
The quiver is a separate item that holds 20 arrows for you in an easily accessible location.
ok thx i fix that right now
Hi I'm a new player. I'm looking for a party to join if anyone will like to have me I would be most appreciated. All I ask is I would like to play on d&d beyond and use discord voice chat.
See #looking-for-players or #looking-for-dm. I'm also running my own campaign, here: #looking-for-players message
Hey there, am a CoW Druid with 14 Wis & Con as my highest stats, rolled pretty badly (don't mind).
For flavor/background reasons as a Variant Human feat I took Chef.
Playing with fire/healing spells only - what should my Feat progression be roughly? Max Wis via 4/8/12th Feat and on 16 take Warcaster? Or Warcaster first and max ASI after?
Playing as a full caster and (also for flavor reasons) without Wild Shaping into Animals.
Decided against elemental adept originally since it doesn't work on the spirit and I felt like many enemies get fire immunity also - counting on my DM to give some magical items in that regard
The tavern brawler feat makes you proficient in improvised weapons, so that seems appropriate.
I have been reading the "marriage" mechanics and finding out the shenanigans of the marriage-murder-revivify-marry loop has got to be one of the funniest optimizations out there
bear in mind, it is a good 300gp a head for this to work
War Caster is mostly useful if you plan on taking a good concentration spell(s). Druid gets a lot of them, but if you’re mainly blasting (with fire spells) and healing then it’ll see diminished usage
I am totally going to explain it as a pioneered battlefield tactic my character's heretic father invented in one of his rebellions
300gp a head for a whole rebel army? They must have a good financer
"Before we storm the gates, would anyone like to protest this marriage of 3000 couples?"
It's a little dubious. Me personally, I probably would just say it doesn't take effect in my games, because it's 100% a use of the mechanics in a way that is not intentional
but also hey, it's your games, whatever works works
dude's an insane heretic exploiting his religion for the most political gain, it fits too well for a snippet of his lore
there is definitely a question of what widowing means in a world where magic can bring you back from the dead
especially if you were gone for one minute or less
Now that I look at it, some backgrounds really are just straight upgrades over another
the religion does not have divorce but it does have murder suicide based annulments
I would assume a big part is that such magic is prohibitively expensive
Urban Bounty Hunter is just Criminal with more flexibility on the proficient skill
John the Farmer is not working off a revivify diamond in his lifetime
who said divorce was cheap
Criminal is Deception + Stealth, UBH is picking two from Stealth, Deception, Persuasion and Insight
plus this is an extremely painful process, being you know death. It's very authentic to real life
and now you have a sitcom of a couple in an arranged battle-marriage dealing with the consequences all these years later
so for context
this costs 1.8 million gold pieces each time
but for a temporary burst of 2 ACC per person it's somewhat of a good buff for a peasant army
Breaking News: Tarrasque dies to CRAZY action economy
1.8 million gold pieces worth of diamonds being available weekly isn't realistic for a peasant army
no you get the buff from the marriage, you reset the buff through the murder-resurrection
yeah the resurrection costs 1.8 million GP worth of diamonds for 6000 soldiers
it would probably be a one time per soldier thing done before important battles or opperations
unless the person was of extreme import they probably wouldn't be 'divorced'
Add on an extra 25 gp of silver per couple as well, so 75000 gp worth of silver for all the Ceremonies
each ceremony also takes an hour. If it was a single cleric performing the spell, it would require 125 days of weddings. To get through them all in a day, you would need at least 146 clerics
"Why are you stealin all our gold mister-officers?"
"It's called wedding gifts idiot, and it's for the upcoming great battle marriage ceremony. Idiot."
25 gp is actually a fairly significant amount for the average peasant, that’s like a months income for the lucky person who can afford a modest lifestyle
Honestly I just think Ceremony should include a divorce option that states the divorced people can never marry someone they were married to ever again
Eh remarriage is a thing, but I get your point
the doomed romance between two adventuring party ex's, coming this summer
All bards are forced to pay alimony after divorce, regardless of circumstance
Here, I'll homebrew it.
Divorce: You touch a humanoid willing to be divorced after benefitting from the wedding effect. It applies to their marriage partner or partners. For the next year, all divorced parties lose 2 points of armor class while they are within 30 feet of each other, and gain advantage on wisdom saves when more than 30 feet away from each other. They can benefit from the wedding effect but never with someone they previously divorced with ceremony.
it's probably a good theological system since it forces those seeking divorce to witness their afterlife for a moment before they return forcing them to reflect upon their ways.
tactical 30 ft socially distanced divorced divisions
I may have said that before but the absence of a divorce option means that there is in-universe an incentive to spousal murder.
I would never marry an adventurer because 90% of the time they die
wealthy couples murdering each other and remarrying before a battle.
Like I genuinly want to see D&D death polls
I can just imagine the logic. Want to marry someone else but the magic will not recognize your wedding unless your previous spouse dies?
That just feels like the universe and the gods telling you that you need to murder your spouse.
You know. It's like how just about every country that legalized divorce saw an almost immediate drop in mysterious deaths
just sounds like another good grift from asmodeus
Still don't understand why people would ever mistreat a loved one, especially if you sleep in the same house as them
that's like asking an illithid for a hair cut
"we're getting so many people racking up murder numbers, we are bank rolled"
"Until death do us part" may come from good intentions, but in practice it has historically encouraged poisoning, beating people to death, and many other forms of abuse.
okay so this has prompted a funny DnD shared backstory idea: Two partners who got a fantasy vegas wedding who do not like each other, and they need to suffer one week together before they can get a divorce, and they need to stick together so that they can benefit from the divorce effects
I'd advise learning about abusive dynamics.
I see.
I was thinking this - two soldiers marry for a battle and then survive and have to face the consequences of this
Would dispel magic work on this spell?
not only do they have ptsd from the battle they now have to find away to both afford a revivify and must suffer death
two soldiers marrying for a battle is not really what i was thinking
Maybe I misunderstood but isn't Praetors's homebrew about inciting the divorced people to stay as far away from each other as possible?
2 acc is 2 acc
im starting a new campaign and was wondering if i should multiclass, like 3 into rogue and 2 into wild magic sorcerer
do u think playing this would be fun? or will i be somewhat underpowered?
Do three into wild magic, then you can sneak attack by readying and action and quickened spelling a cantrip (like booming blade)
Not optimal in the slightest, but it’s funny
i like ur thinking, thanks!
If this were 2024, you’d also be able to get advantage via innate sorcery for free sneak attacks, but I see it isn’t, Tis a shame
Innate sorcery gives advantage on all spell attack rolls.
Booming blade is an attack roll, which gives it advantage, which gives sneak attacks.
And I know you’re playing 2014 cuz you can’t have a subclass before three levels in a class in 2024, and you have a level 2 wild magic sorc
Have a nice day chat 👋
Why not Bard Sorc multiclass
you too friend
Bard fits the skill monkey thing
ahh yea i see
how so?
Hello!! I always thought this chat was dead? I guess not
i mean what benifits does it give
More supportive spell list, like the Rogue its also proficient in a lot of checks
If you want melee stuff you can go Swords or Valor Bard
No? This is the most active chat on this server
Yeah I think my inbox just wasn’t working
I bet dwarf buildings are rather cozy and surprisingly spacious since you have practically unlimited building area underground, and digging non-comfort rooms wouldn’t require wall or floor construction
oh yea and using charisma is just both their things as well, how should i build a lvl 5 character for that though? 3 lvls into sorcerer or bard?
Uhh probably need to ask #optimization for this
ah alr thx!
what will i be able to play worlock on?
Like any campaign if that's what you mean, very versatile class
Thanks! Will probably go for ASIs first then, at least to +4 Wis
I mean I will also be using Con spells, sure. Since I only use fire/healing roughly half of my spells are con spells
If you mean the video game announced a few days ago, I think PC, Xbox X/S, and PS5?
Not fully sure but those would be my guesses
I actually think resilient con is better than warcaster
Better than being able to cast a levelled spell as a reaction?
But yeah I've read that on higher levels Res: Con gets better
Both are pretty good but at lower levels you’ll feel the impacts of War Caster more
Yeah that's what I read also, but maybe Res: Con on higher levels could be better then, it I go ASIs first, since they are rather low
Agreed. But at higher levels resilient con is better. What level does this campaign go up to @wispy terrace?
We don't know yet, but open ended for now, could be all the way to 20
If it could be high level, then I'd personally say resilient con
-# I say both-
ok thanks
Wha game?
Thanks! Settled on going to at least 18 WIS for now via 2 ASIs and then going for Res: Con after, maxing Wis to top it off later
Also important. 20 in your main stat is vital
What class are you playing? What spells are you planning on casting?
Oh wow!!
Cool right?
Evening y’all, I’m new and I’ve never had an actual campaign so how does one start or where do I find a game?
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
Oh. And use #dnd-newcomers if you’ve got any questions
Thank you very much nugget🙏🏾
No problem, Valentino. Hope to see ya around:D
Very much depends when you're from. I found my current group on Meetup
And my second group on Reddit
DnD beyond forums, reddit, this server, local games store, library, friend group, Roll20, there’s options
Well I’m Middle East and dnd is pretty much nonexistent here so I guess EU
Curious about something, how does one decide between choosing ASI or feats in general
Will check that out definitely
Well, if I think a feat is cool, and my class can afford losing the ASI, me take
Notably, if my class is monk
Think about what you want your character to do etc. I went Weapon Mastery as my Bard is an epic swords-woman
20 WIS would be by level 12 then, but that's fine I guess, we rolled stats and I'm fine with that. Will take Res: con after then I guess
Many countries or regions also have specific lfg communities. I’m sure you could find one for the Middle East with enough searching
Circle of Wildfire Druid. Only fire and healing spells. Not wild shaping into an animal due to background/flavor reasons
That circle looked epic when I played a Druid
We only had one session yet but it's so much fun
My current character is a Sword's Bard
Fiery Teleportation is so cool
+11 to persuasion at level 5 lmao
Honestly, you might be okay only taking one. See how things go but I don’t think you’ll be casting so many critical concentration spells that you need two feats keeping them up
Combining dnd and bg3 I have only yet to play Bard, tried all other main classes. Will defo do in the future
Yeah probably not, will also see what magic items my DM provides me. Maybe I should drop some hints to her to give me some magical items akin to elemental adept 😂
Honestly if you’re taking a ton of fire spells I’d even just say take elemental adept
My DM let us all take magic items. I got two +2 scimitars hahaha
Noice
+10 to hit at level 5 😭
Usually, its between two choices:
- Character design & synergy with class
- Catered to the DM's playstyle or campaign
That’s archery levels of to hit bonuses 😭
I like high dex and charisma. Sword's Bard felt ideal
Yeahh I kinda hate that it doesn't work on the wildfire spirit, but yeah, could still take that. Rn I'm feeling maxing my ASIs first
Party composition is gonna be fun, we got another Druid and an Arcane Archer lol
I like monk
I know. It's bonkers haha! But one of my friends, his rogue has a mechanical gun for an arm lol
what's your wis score?
That’s sick
+2 (14), tied as my highest score with con lol
Yeah, this DM is awesome. Super flexible but makes sure everyone is balanced
I guess he has smt up his sleeve
oh wow those are some rough stats
Oof. You rolled?
yeah I would take an ASI at level 4
He did lol. We thought we were going to die in the last session. The session boss had two phases. We were almost dead after phase one lol
I assume it's gotta be an all timer bad stat roll
The last time my DM tried a multiphase boss fight the boss got Bag of Devoured
that's at best gotta be 12s for all your rolls
Wow, that session boss was really gunning for him.
Yeah haha (for my backup I rolled great stats, 16/14/16/13/11/9. Thinking Bladesinger next)
Did your DM not put a minimum? We rerolled if we had 74 or lower
Nope, but I'm fine with that, fits into my backstory
Then, between ASI & feat, depends how short the campaign is. Taking an ability score to 20 or two to an even score is huge.
Or rather I accommodated accordingly
Hi fine with that, I’m Nugget
That's fair. We had a minimum of 75, otherwise we rerolled. It's a standard practice at DnD tables I think
Woah my name is fine with that, fits into my backstory
But it's ait, many people get it wrong
Fine-With-That, ah so from the Argonian school of having conventions
Partially based on maths. If I have a really bad main stat I might take a straight ASI (once had a 14 str paladin ;-;) but if my stat is pretty good I prefer a half feat
Yeah, if it fits with your character that's fine!
Yeah will do
A +1 to your DC and spell attacks is much better than war caster will give you
Thanks, the advice of y'all is much appreciated
I really wonder how long we'll hold out, honestly I don't want to die with this one, loving the concept. But no real frontliner is gonna be rough haha
I wonder who this “Ya’ll” fellow is, I don’t see their name on this server
No idea who ya'll is, but clearly zimahh was talking about y'all
Ok imma stop with the bad jokes, I’m going to bed. My bed mimic Ted says hi, plus I need to feed him. See yall tmr!
To bed! Where are you from?
Guess
No one who knows tell
I don't think its allowed to mention where you may be from
Oh sorry my bad haha
Nope
Anyway night!
Night!
Pretty sure you can, though it’s not recommended
Night Nugget
Because I’ve already said multiple times on this server, and I haven’t been smited yet
Night, Star!💫
-# I don't know the extent of information allowable is all
Me neither tbh
Ok gotta stop procrastinating sleep
Is there any situation in standard array for example where ASI would be worth
I usually dont take it in standard array
Cuz even for MAD classes my spread's usually just 17/14/14 on the three main stats
just because i at least have a 17 score
Country, continent, and/or timezone are all ok according to server rules
If your main stat is 17, then take a half feat
Thank you!
I’m sure there are edge cases like if you lived somewhere like Nauru or somewhere hella small
Is it worth pushing con (as a SAD class) or int/wis/cha (as a SAD or MAD class) to 16 ever in those situations
Or are feats more worth it
Feats are usually more worth it imo
Depends on your class. If you cast con spells then 16 con is helpful. Wisdom is important for saving throws. But a half feat is more useful
I was thinking of 16 con just for some extra health lol rather than con saves
And that's fair
Con saves are the more important half of better con, especially if you have a good concentration spell
Then take tough
+2 HP/level is nice but monster damage definitely scales a lot more than that
Depends on what you want to do versus the length of the Campaign, and type of Campaign.
I took Observant because the DM had a ton of secret/hidden things and RP, so I Expertised Perception on a Cleric.
I realize out of context context it seems like a reply to taking Tough, mb haha
Yeah, I know what this DM I have is like. So my second Bard expertise was perception lol
I don't have a specific scenario in mind, it was more along the lines of there being guides for feats but no one really talks about ASI
Hey, could I describe my character's sword and someone try to sketch a lil sketch of it before I reveal it just to see how well I described it?
And in class guides they'd just take ASI anyways
So either ASI is sleeper good or I'm misunderstanding something
It’s a very strong default option, if I were to put it summarily
Like for example I took Sharpshooter and Piercer for Ranger so far as they were described as decent feats, but Ranger guides would rush 20 dex by level 8
An ASI in your main stat is useful. You get +1 to attack roles or you save DC etc. That's why half feats are really good
ASI vs feats, is really weighing math versus extra goodies.
Reaching 20 in your Primary Stat early is optimal in your success.
Yup. Agreed
Wait I think I'm getting it now, so almost all feats could be situational by nature, but ASIs just work in general (kind of like the Lucky feat)
And Half-feats on odd scores is both mathematical success & goodies. Then using ASI to top it off, you're golden.
Are MAD classes more reliant on ASIs in general, or is it anything goes too?
Like I was thinking a Ranger would want 20 dex 16 wis for example at one point by taking two ASIs
MAD classes? Lol
It sounds funnier than it should be, I mean Monk/Paladin/Ranger/EK Fighter
Oohh. Multi ability score
Classes that need to stack two stats + Con
Multiple Attribute Dependency. MAD.
I got so lucky with my rolls. My Bard had 20 Cha and 19 Dex at level 1
Meaning classes that require multiple attributes to function. A wizard only really needs int to function. Dex for AC, Con for HP are for survival not function. Compare and contrast with monks whose base functionality requires wisdom and dexterity. And they need con for HP.
MAD as opposed to SAD - Single Attriubte Dependent
"It's bad to be MAD, and good to be SAD" as has been said
Everyone is slightly MAD because everyone requires at least one attribute + Con. But the classes we call MAD are the ones who need at least two attributes + Con
Paladins require strength, charisma and constitution. Therefore, MAD.
They even give us a recommended standard array spreads for each class. With CON never lower than a 12.
Can anyone give me an example where Cleansing Touch is useful?
Ending a debilitating spell on an ally or an empowering spell on an enemy, for example.
The latter example is not possible as Cleansing Touch specifies it must be a willing target in 2014 and the feature is gone entirely in 2024, replaceced with Restoring Touch instead
Ah true, so it's basically for support.
Wait I just realized we skimmed through this
hey there, if i'm casting a ritual and i have an arcane focus, i don't need to mess with the materials, right?
A ritual doesn't matter, the value of the materials matters
Arcane Foci ccovers any and all Material Components that do not have a listed gold value only
gotcha, thanks
It also doesn't cover things that are used in the casting of the spell
You'll want to use the word "consumed" to be very clear.
Yeah sorry
I've been toying with the idea of taking my normal style or where we tracked food, water days, weather patterns ammo etc. And just straight up removing component pouches and arcane foci. And running a hyper gritty realism campaign where all the components are consumed.
My players like tracking and SIM play.
It's your book to keep!
how mutch AC does the "Armor Of The Fallen" give. doest say any thing about ac
Doesn't sound familiar. Whats this from?
Source: The Book of Many Things
It's a set of enchanted medium or heavy armour, so one of those.
Whatever the DM says.
so then wat would my ac be if i where? or is it something like the mithral armor that you combine with normal set like plate or chainmail?
if it doesnt say it gives an extra bonus then its just whatever suit the armor is normally
And whatever specific form of armour it is - chain shirt, a breastplate, full plate - is up to the DM. You get the same AC as the mundane version.
ok thx
Hear me out: beast barbarian tortle, it’s literally an alligator turtle.
And a massive racial defence of 17 AC without armour.
I wouldnt call that massive per se but it's an option
Well, it goes with the massive hp pool of a barbarian plus the tough feat, good luck cracking that shell.
Tortle barbarians rock
I'm on day 5 of my 13 game streak till I'm off for Christmas
I've had the same idea a while ago, he was gonna be one of my characters in a campaign I joined like.. 6 or 8 months ago but I decided against it lol 😭
Instead, in another campaign, I'm playing a Tortle Knowledge Cleric
He's an old man and a Librarian..
In Waterdeep... 💀
Hmm thinking about doing another 4-6 session campaign
But this time give the party a theme to follow
Like “Divinity Unleashed: Play a character with Divine powers and or abilities”
💀
yow
i played a session of 5e irl, this is my first time playing using the 2024 rules. but ... i dont get how weapon mastery works
Hello
Each weapon has a specific effect that fighters Rogues barbarians paladins and rangers can take advantage of
It's a little unintuitive. I can try to explain it here:
- Every weapon has a "locked" property called a mastery (e.g. nick, vex).
- You can only unlock the property if you have "Weapon Mastery".
- For an example, you can look at Barbarian: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level1BarbarianWeaponMastery
- "Your training with weapons allows you to use the mastery properties of two kinds of Simple or Martial Melee weapons of your choice, such as Greataxes and Handaxes. Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can practice weapon drills and change one of those weapon choices."
'Your training with weapons allows you to use the mastery properties of three kinds of Simple or Martial weapons of your choice. Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can practice weapon drills and change one of those weapon choices.
When you reach certain Fighter levels, you gain the ability to use the mastery properties of more kinds of weapons, as shown in the Weapon Mastery column of the Fighter Features table.
so i get three unlocked at the start?
Yes
"Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can practice weapon drills and change one of those weapon choices."
what does this mean?
You got it!
You could, for example, pick dagger (simple; nick), long sword (martial, sap), and longbow (martial; slow).
When you finish your long rest, you could change one of these out. For example, you could then switch out dagger for something like greatsword (martial; graze).
oh so i was confused . Thought it allowed me to change a weapon's mastery to another mastery lol
Each mastery is hard-locked to the weapon
So you can choose another weapon, to swap it in/out of the 3 you know (at level 1)
btw, a mastery can be used every attack right? my GM and the group thinks its once per turn?
It'll depend on the mastery. Example:
Cleave
If you hit a creature with a melee attack roll using this weapon, you can make a melee attack roll with the weapon against a second creature within 5 feet of the first that is also within your reach. On a hit, the second creature takes the weapon’s damage, but don’t add your ability modifier to that damage unless that modifier is negative. You can make this extra attack only once per turn.
And if you allready toppled a foe they aren't going more prone If you hit them again but you can topple multiple foes
Like a prepared spell you can swap it out
We have channels for looking for games
please do not post your age (and specific age ranges arent allowed in #find-a-game
Don't share your age, it's one of the rules, wouldn't want you to get in trouble
mb
might wanna delete it
I wonder if you're allowed to post your age in the form of a riddle?
If you wish to know the age of me, first you must answer my riddles three!

This is sort of DnD related as its for a character im writing
There a music channel for this server?
Anyone got music for writing a thief spy woman oc in the style of like Catwoman and similar characters like Fujiko Mine from Lupin III, Invisigal from Dispatch, Carmen Sandiego, Jane Doe from Zenless Zone Zero, Anne Tamaki / Panther from Persona 5, Vala from AFK Journey, Irma Vep from Les Vampires, etc?
I got myself some magic items and now i can aurafarm
Random, but holy heck, I love this feature:
"Positioning. The target knows the location of all other map holders that are on the same plane of existence as itself. When casting a spell or creating another effect that requires being able to see the effect’s target, a map holder can target another map holder regardless of sight or cover, so long as the other map holder is still within the effect’s range."
Driftglobe is really cool
ya girl has accidentally conned herself into learning 3.5e
Sounds pretty interesting for utility or if you're a buffer/healer then a way to bypass darkness and obscuring effects
Its a Cartographer Artificer thing, which, is indeed very support heavy
its a very fun subclass from the looks of it
I mean how do you make someone a map holder
The subclass creates maps
Oki. And anyone who touches the map becomes a map holder?
Hence, Cartography
depending on the ruling, they either carry the map on their person or have to hold it in their hands
Yes, so long as that map stays on their person, they don't directly have to be holding it as far as I'm aware as long as they keep it
Oo, interesting
the second ruling is a lot more harsh and probably isnt intended but the way its worded makes it seem like that
Yeah, they don't have to hold it
i just remember the wording used was vague, where it could be ruled to be either
anyone playing some dnd tonight I am trying to learn
Do you all think the Background Feats from Dragonlance and Bigby are equal in power to the Origin Feats from PHB, Eberron, and FR?
Close enough yeah
Check out #looking-for-players for games recruiting players
neat, so it's fine to treat them as Origin Feats then?
torches are the cheapest
Sure go for it
If the DM allows it
6 hours of oil 1sp 1lb 6 hours of light
Assuming enemies may be nearby, or there are random monsters, Hooded Lantern. But as Skittle says, relatively expensive to buy (at low level).
what do you guys use for DnD sessions? Foundry, Just DND beyond VTT? or anything else?
My groups use Roll20 and Discord
Hello
Roll20 is cluttered and the sheet a bother
Owlbear+pdf char sheet is best
Ive used roll20 in 3 campaigns now and each time it was this weird "its the best weve got" atmosphere with several people pitching alternatives from time to time
And some didnt use the native char sheet
The chat takes too much screen away from the map and the clutter is in the way
You could just put the chat in a separate window
More windows mean clutter and, while open, cover the map
Roll20 and Beyond20, Discord for voice. Or just Discord and DDB, we can see the rolls in the campaign log. I prefer to have something visual for folk to focus on when playing online though.

Does a Circle of the Stars Druid not get a bonus spell list?
So with the new eberron forge of the artificer updates to artificer subclasses and a new subclass, do you think it’s possible that wizards of the coast might finally revive battlerager barbarian in the future ?
Neither release of Circle of Stars has had a bonus spell list, no. Likely because they get access to some specific spells baked-in
Ah,battlerager, one of if not the worst subclasses of 5e
I know man it breaks my heart, such a cool concept and aesthetic but terrible execution
I’d rather see a sun soul monk update
Thank you 😊
Did Fey Wanderer actually get worse in 2024, purely based off the subclass? (No taking into account Ranger feature changes)
Not to my knowledge
Only 1 change was done
Instead of Dispel Magic they got Summon Fey instead
Very minimally changed, but they still got Summon fey, just at 11th level
So I guess it just has 1 less spell basically
Everything else is the exact same in the subclass
It’s also hard to say it got better or worse without considering the base class
Like one might look better or worse when the two subclasses are looked at side by side, but when they’re designed to have synergy with their respective versions, it’s like comparing a lime and a lemon and asking which one is better than the other
They’re both good, but at its base they do different things
can temp hp bring someone back from being unconscious? 🤔
Nope
darn
THP is just a buffer before you start to actually lose HP
Am I lagging or is nobody talking
Just like a real life conversation, there are lulls
We're jamming in #dm-discussion.
is bashing a thing in dnd with a shield??
I think there may be a feat for it? But otherwise I think it's just treated as an improvised weapon attack.
Ah yes the Shield Master feat
There’s a feat for it
found it
using it as an improvised weapon would be 1d4? with no prof added to it right? does this use a bonus or normal action?
It would be an action to make an attack with an improvised weapon normally
This channel is so weird to me. Sometimes I see good conversations, but most of the time it feels like a big ol’ pissing contest.
And the amount of times where my style gets criticized and scrutinized instead of focusing on the person asking for help? Rancid vibes sometimes.
Passing good vibes your way then steve
Yeah, unfortunately a lot of people have it in their head that if someone DMs in a way they wouldn't, then that's the wrong way to DM
Oopsie, me forgetting the gif/emote only response rule.
What's your style? I don't read that channel much
I feel like it’d start a fight to list the points. Maybe I’ll think of a constructive to frame it later. ✌️
Is somneone else experiencing weird rolls on DND Beyond? We are playing right now and it acts weird. People role for instance stealth and it appears as something completely different.
It doesn't roll when you click on a stat or weapon.
Several things that are weird.
Last week my player was also saying that D&DB dice were being weird but I didn’t see it for myself.
Maybe #ddb-support can help?
I don't know, but sometimes browser extensions interfere with things like that just generally on websites in my experience, that is temporarily resolved by refreshing.
Also make sure to disable Beyond20 extension as apparently it doesn't currently work with the latest DNDBeyond updates (also we don't provide support for third-party tools like Beyond20)
It just happened today for several of the party ..
:(
Well have them hop on over to #ddb-support and we can try and help them troubleshoot. But we first ask that the disable any browser extensions that may intefere with DnDBeyond like Beyon20 and AboveVTT.
How good is toll the dead as a main damaging cantrip?
I find fire bolt more useful/usable but toll the dead is not bad.
Would grabbing a poison spray along it be good?
Toll the dead is decent, good damage when it lands but it’s still a wisdom save
What class cracker
Necromancer
Like, wizard subclass or homebrew thing
Wizard
2014 or 24 rules
24
Nice, with 24 rules then wizards can switch a cantrip out on a long rest so it won’t be too impactful of a decision
Personally I avoid most if not all poison based damage stuff since it’s so commonly resisted and immune
I like toll the dead more than poison spray but I don't think I've ever succeded in landing one ..
Alrighty
Undead have bad wis saves no?
Necrotic damage on undead sounds counterintuitive
someone more knowledeable should respond to that one ...
Do skeletons have resistance to it?
Like just a basic skeleton? After looking weirdly enough, apparently not.
Interesting. I mean, it was designed to do more damage to undead i think
Good evening, I am new to both the server and the world of role-playing games. I am looking for a GM for a campaign as well as some kind of “introduction.” If anyone would be kind enough to volunteer, I would be delighted. (I am French.)
do people host d&d games here?
thank youuuuu
Also welcome to the server and to dnd!
thank you for your kindness
where are you from brother ?
Skeleton would be a bad example of what I’m trying to say, which is the broad spectrum of undead creatures you’ll find either necrotic resistance/immunity, poison resistance/immunity, or both
Ukraine
look your mp
Oh i see. What about frostbite?
Cold damage right
Yup. It does 1d6 and disadvantage on the next attack
how does the looking for dm part work i cant make one
Con saves aren’t great to target
Yeah
Essentially, if you’re wanting to damage undead creatures, radiant damage and magical physical weapon damages are good bets
Is ray of frost good?
?
You might like mind sliver, targets intelligence saves which aren’t all that common, puts a penalty on their next saving throw, and does psychic damage
Sounds pretty great, though might be a bit hard to flavour as a necromancy ish spell
You simply dont. Even Necromancers dont exclusively use necromancy spells. Thats just not how magic works
Oki
Thanks!
Why do some people say dm and others say gm
Are their any other feats besides tavern brawler that give improvised weapon proficiently, it kinda sucks, especially when im already playing a monk
The idea for the character is street rat monk and I want them to be able to punch and throw people around.
Why would there be another feat to do the exact same thing?
Dungeon master, game master, it has no real difference except that gm applies to other games too
Because D&D legally copyrighted 'Dungeon Master' as a term so every other game legally has to use something else like game master or storyteller
Finally got a reply back from my DM
Because of course Paladins can smite from ranges in this campaign
They certainly shouldnt
GM is for many other RPGs. DM is specific to D&D, and this is the official server. That's all.
Homebrew rule, apparently. To be honest, this many rules for it is starting to be very off putting
A homebrew rule to make the already strongest 2014 martial even stronger is a red flag imo
Well, there plenty of homebrew rules that seem to make both players and enemies more challenging
Problem is, just about none of them benefits ranger
There’s a 3rd party spell, Ballistic Smite, that implements ranged smites quite well
Tavern brawler is an amazing feat for a monk
generally speaking a game riddled with homebrew rule changes is a red flag for me baseline
There aren't many. It's no more than 5 primary ones
It's just how much this benefits just about anyone but Ranger that is the problem
You want to play a ranger?
Perkin's Crit seems like a fun way to do high and rapid piercing damage as a ranger, only for the problem that crits on smaller enemies are not that important, while a crit on a big enemy is devastating
Imagine a boss dying in 3 turns mostly because a paladin did almost 100 damage in 2 turns as a level 2
So damage might not be the best route. But I still got some spellcasting up my sleeve, right?
In comes the next one, with spell points replacing spell slots
How would a level 2 Paladin do 100 damage
Close to 100 damage
And it would be from back to back divine smite crits from a thrown javelin (another homebrew rule)
Spells and skills and mobility is what the Ranger is known for yes
Ah, so broken homebrew
something i've always wanted to do in a campaign is a PC who's a ranger's animal companion given sentience and becoming a fully fledged party member, as a sort of idea when my first PC becomes retired from play
It isn't that terrible because things like Perkin's Crits apply to both us and them, meaning our Fighter did find out the hard way once or twice just how quickly crap can hit the fan
Well Beastmaster companions since Tasha’s are as smart as a person already
The problem is that these rules seem to be all fine and dandy... for just about everyone but Ranger
So talk to your group about it
It's still not the best, that's enough to oneshot a LOT of players.
Like.
With Massive Damage rules you'd die instantly at level 2 with crits that insane.
perkins Crit rules should not be applies to monsters unless you genuinely want a high lethality game
Massive Damage rules?
It applies to both us and them, apparently
I know it does. what i said is still true
When you take damage that more than exceeds your health
You die instantly
if you take damage of [Current HP] + [Max HP] in a single damage instance
I think it's if you take damage equal to twice your hp?
Nope if you're already low te threshold is lower
Or more than as well, obv
The rule is there, but it requires twice the Max HP and a failed Con save of DC 14
If you have 5 HP out of say, your maximum of 25, then you take 30 damage in a single spell/attack/instance then you die
If you are going to implement house rules to buff crits, at least wait until T2 in my opinion
i'm not in a dnd campaign. mostly just voicing out hypothetical character ideas i've wanted to explore for a while now
T2 being level 2?
Or Tier 3, even.
No, level 5 is when tier 2 starts.
Tier 2 is lv 5-10
tier 2 as in levels 5-10
Ahhh
Because level 5 is the first significant boost in power for D&D classes
I assume tiers are based on when the proficiency levels up?
Or is this another thing entirely?
No PB level up is its own scale
tiers was a category created by AL i think officially speaking to separate groups by levels
Tiers of play are in the Player’s Handbook and DMG explaining the power levels of DnD parties and threats they expect to face
They are? Neat
Monsters follow the tiers of play too as well by Cr
Anyways, I doubt it really matters
The homebrew rules themselves don't bother me too much as much as it bothers me that it makes me as a Ranger rapidly outclassed
Mostly follows player levels just expanded to have Cr17-30 for tier 4 and Cr0-4 as tier 1
Yeah since 2014, 4e also had some, not sure on earlier versions of the game
Why need consistent damage when you have AoE and High single target damage that can be casted several times thanks to spell points?
4e’s tiers of play was just levels 1-10, 11-20, 21-30
Why try to focus on crits when at least 3 of your party members outright do it better, even without a crit?
Then don’t
It would be a lot easier not to when I have something else to look for/towards
As of now, I don't
K
tier 4 being 17-20 always amuses me because it makes sense for spellcasters but martials dont get anything significant at level 17 lol
Genuine question (and perhaps this will wreak some sweet chaos)
What is a build with near no downsides that just works and isn’t too overpowered that a DM would ban stuff out of it.
And we’ll call the character: Todd Howards.
So yeah. I'm kind of just... stuck being on the sidelines
i personally feel as if 5e is intended to be played between levels 3-12. i think 5e works best in that level range. 13+ is too gonzo, and if i wanted to play a lvl 1-2 adventure in 5e i could just be playing B/X instead or speedrun through those levels
it's nice that 3-12 is 10 levels too. you could do an entire satisfying campaign in that level range
Monk gets the highest damage die for their attacks
Fighter getting another Action surge and Indomitable
Barbarian only gets improved Brutal strike.
Yeah looking at it most Martials don’t get too big features (besides Fighter)
High level dnd rocks
Rogue only got a dice to sneak attack and a subclass feature
Ranger gets Precise Hunter which I can see as significant. Also 5th level spells
Paladin only gets 5th level spells.
Then again looking at casters they get to cast 9th level spells. But only get to use it once a day
A single use ability that’s strong but is only the once
Probably more significant for short adventures
The open beta stopped at lv 10 so that perspective is largely intentional
And wizards are honestly all broken in there own way but with low hp, which can be fixed with the spells shield and mage armour.
crazy. i didn't know that. what's the rationale for that
Rationale? WotC? Surely you jest?
ahaha
Those might help at low levels. But that AC boost gets overrun by level 8+
Hey 👋
AC largely stops mattering after late Tier 2 unless you are a bladesinger wizard
Then AC becomes useless after late tier 3 for blade singers
I will say it’s very fun pulling an Amethyst Dragon on a Bladesinger
Black hole breath using a Strength save
And by that time you have polymorph and too many control spells shutting enemies completely off, and actually, level 9 you get 5th level spells, summon dragon.
So wizard is good for those that are creative.
thats just going to mess up anyone besides the barbarian anyways
Plus 19 to hit on my cr 30 beasts goes brrrrrrr
Honestly my favourite is divination wizard
Ah yes Polymorph a single target Wisdom save.
And it’s late tier 2 so hardly any uses in the day
+19 is the terrasque so realistically almost nothing besides great wyrm dragons and ancients should have that much to hit
Near death allies is a better use honestly.
and the barbarian is anyways messed up because they’re stuck just throwing javelins at the flying dragon
Bladesinger is so amusing because it’s subclass features are hardly every useful for an actual Gish. It’s just to play an a wizard with bigger AC
The features are perfectly fine and useful for a gish. The problem is you're still a full wizard.
This is why we need a true 1/2 arcane caster gish base class.
Eldritch knight:
That's a 1/3 caster nice try
What’s the difference
gng i may have rolled so good for my stats 😭 it was all 19, 19, 18, 11, 12, 12
Magus fans laughing in the background
Spellcasting
The rate of spell level/slot squisition
Did you roll those in front of your DM
Half casters get more spells after all
But back to the matter of order, I’d really like your opinion on warlocks clerics Druids and sorcerers
no but if i need to im 100% willing to do that again
I'm not laughing. I'm mad we don't have a Magus equivalent in 5e
You will probably have to I’m sorry
Yea i kinda figured, though i trust in my luck
No sane dm accepts random rolled stats and more often than not point buy gets used on average
i dont think i have the capacity to roll lower than an 11
Not until it matters :)
How did you get 19’s
no no let them learn
Agreed. I don't love Eldritch Knight/Hexblade/Bladesinger's implementation. I just want an arcane martial half caster
im lowkey just lucky
A 19 isn’t possible
how so?
Eldritch Knight has most of what I want. But I've been pointlessly shilling a 5e version of the Duskblade from 3.5 for ages
Warlocks: pretty complex and it’s low spell slots isn’t an issue realistically
Clerics: What it lacks in utility and mobility it has in relying on a subclass to give them what they want.
Druids: Probably the most balanced class with the 2024 update besides maybe Shepherd.
Sorcerers: The fact their Metamagic applies to magic items is sick and sadly rarely taken advantage of.
Sir. How exactly did you roll those dice lol
I assume stat bonuses are factored in
Hi lowkey just lucky, I’m Nugget
And ye, a Nat 19 for rolled stats before modifiers is impossible
am i rolling wrong...
standard ability score rolling is 4d6 drop the lowest
What method are you using
Maximum for 3d6 is 3*6, or 18
your range of results should be 3-18 with this method
Unless your factored in your ability score increases
3d6 is for masochists
Nope. It’s 4d6 and drop the lowest roll
It’s 4d6 minus the lowest
tbf i have never rolled for stats, always point buy
You didn’t read the PHB on how to do it?
cool thx!
point buy is superior and fair to all players anyways
Or the free basic rules?
The highest level for this campaign is level 11
Even that isn't a good sign because even at best, a Ranger/Fighter will not keep up with the other players
I remember someone here had people roll 3d6 in order stats and they got what they got.
i always assumed it was d20s and nobody corrected me when i talked about it
sadism
Urizt in their toa hardcore iirc
Before or after picking a class?
Yeah 3d6 in order is how I like to do it when I get a chance
Question about clerics, the complaint about utility I hear often and I just don’t get it.
With access to, guidance, bane, bless, aid, and aura of life. And with the ability to switch out spells from the entire cleric spell list.
For the fun of it I’m gonna roll that and see what I get
I’m more of a “learn about the character I am playing” than making one early
Yes, fantastic campaign
Yeah that’s mostly support and control and not utility besides maybe guidance
I got a little question. Am I forced to use my own voice during sessions? I am not thrilled to use my own voice.
By utility people mean the ability to approach situations from different angles. Most clerics aren’t good at that, they tend to be a very direct approach class
Idk how you’d use other people’s voices to say what you want
OK i am back and now i rolled 13 16 8 11 10 17
Mind you, spellcasting is not something I can contribute towards with 3 dedicated spellcasters and 1 hybrid spellcaster who has a delete button
And with spell points, this is dialed up to 11
I felt the same way starting out, but I changed my mind. You just need to find a good group
13 str, 15 dex, 15 con, 18 int, 12 Wis, 11 charisma…in order.
You can use any voice you can bring
ur supposed to roll it during group character creation where everyone can see your rolls
Of course. But of course, being forced to use my own actual voice is my personal dealbreaker and something that cannot be taken lightly for me.
Why not?…
ah alr though i dont think the dm minds tbh
Better to ask them just in case
Wizard? You rolled for stats cuz it’s a bit higher than 27 rule.
Does your mouth shoot lasers when you talk?
So... how boned am I exactly?
I understand the insecurity issue but unless you’re playing a text-based game you’re gonna have to talk to play dnd
That I cannot explain.
It is not that bad
That was the 3d6 only and in order that I brought up earlier, just for fun at least
To clarify utility is being able to solve problems that are not combat focused.
Ok, then how are we supposed to help you
They do have some useful tools tbf, but they’re mostly socially oriented
Or I could go around such things and come up with a player character who is mute.
Yeah but you’ll still have to talk as a player to your other players and dm
How are you going to tell the DM what you’re doing in your turn?
Is it a good idea to turn on megalovania when my players are fighting a skeleton army?
No, it will be distracting
i suppose a bit of a fun fact i discovered recently
Standard Array represents the average array you would roll with roll 4d6 drop lowest. On average, if you roll 4d6kh3 6 times, your highest roll in the array would be ~15 and the lowest would be ~8
Dnd is physically impossible without communication
If it is online, then I could write something.
The game is a conversation that we share and weave into a wonderful shared experience, that conversation is most often out loud, but can be text bases in writing as well
There's a difference between speaking in charicter and describing your actions though
Nah. Thats saved for 1 super skeleton
My players are always listening to music during our sessions, they'll be fine
Spooky scary skeletons is for groups of skeletons
No table is going to accommodate you unless it’s already text-based
spooky scary skeletons won't make them scared
So, I tried bringing up the homebrew rules to my DM
And all I really got from that is "You're not changing my mind, we tried to tell you to look at what you can do"
And there are very very few text-based tables
Neither will Megalovania
I doubt I'll ever get to throw sans at them
Which, for context, there are homebrew rules that more or less invalidate almost everything I can do as a ranger
Can text-to-speech based voices work?
What are you talkin about bloodline
It will cause them PTSD
Then leave it at that
Sure I will have to type it out but I am used to it.
(Just my take, very good wizard stats, raise con with 1 point with taking a feat and it’s near perfect)
If you want a game with different rules then DM your own game.
Some tables might be fine with text to speech but I wouldn't expect it.
You ever had one of those times where homebrew rules or a game you played had every other person do what you do and better?
No
(That’s totally what I would do if it was rolled for a legit character and not just an experiment for in here, kinda wish I kept those though since they’re pretty insane for not even being the standard rolling method)
We need to know what your deal is to actually give you an answer
Why can’t you speak at a table
Basically I am trying to find alternative ways to speak without needing to use my own voice
Yeah but why
Some people aren’t comfortable sharing their voice online
Me included
You may be able to find an accommodating table, you may not, only way to find out is to go look
I wasn’t either, I did it anyways and loved it
It’s the quickest way to find out that one of yall is really Morgan freeman
Got so lucky last time, got an 18, 17 , 16, 14, 12, 10. Went with a wizard because I didn’t wanna abuse a mad class
Well, this is more or less me seeing that I am just about entirely out classes by every other player because homebrew rules boost their effectiveness heavily, but I don't get the same degree of help as a Ranger
You'll need to make sure that the table understands and is ok with you only interacting via text.
There aren't a lot of tables where that is within the scope of accommodation.
More so cybersecurity reasons I think, plus confidence
Man, I would’ve loved that for monk
Hey chat
What bardic inspiration do y'all have that is equal parts inspirational and equal parts roast?
I was really strongly considering it for a bard
I don’t think you can be identified with just your voice.
“Congratulations, you’re meeting expectations!”
Pardon me, but how jacked is that barbarian or fighter you got there? And damn agile too.
The only table perfect for you to play is the one you DM. You will only get compromises for games you join as a player.
I made a Valor bard that had the cadence of the soldier from team fortress 2 "you can do better than that you maggot!"
Xd
Because as a player your experience has to be scaled with the entire group.
how good of a spell is chill touch (2014)?
I'm supposed to focus mostly on Ranged damage and spellcasting, but can do neither one effectively
Ranged damage is outclassed easily because Paladins can smite from a range with no penalty
Ranged damage, spellcasting, healing, and other support spells are close to nonexistent for me, but are overflowing with our Cleric, Bard, and Wizard thanks to the spell point rule
Depends on the setting
It's not great, not terrible.
The only notably thing with Chill Touch was how it kills the Mythic bosses from Theros
You’ve said this a lot, is there something we can help you with or do you wanna just get it off your chest?
@crimson gulch Mean things are to be expected from positions like soldiers
Something like that is what I'm leaning more into ☝️
Because their Mythic form says “they regain hit points” so you can just skip phase 2 with Chill Touch
Yep
Can’t believe they allowed ranged smites for the paladin
that is pretty funny
A detail so amusing they fixed that with later Mythic Monsters like Tiamat and Bahamut saying “Their health resets to 500 hp”
I mostly wanna get it off my chest, if I'm real with ya
I'm trying my best to be optimistic about this, but it just isn't getting anywhere
Something tells me you have underhanded roasts
Ok good luck
And at level 11, they can cast the delete button at the third level 6 times if they wanted to
I have everything, I run so many sessions
i would talk to your DM and the other players about it
Gimme inspirational roasts
He did
This is why I do long adventuring days
Like, if 3d8+2d6+28 isn’t making you feel optimistic, you really should bring it up
Tried that already, I was told more or less "Nothing you say will change my mind. We already told you what to do (focus on what you can do), but you keep complaining"
Wel-
I was in a situation like that, left and never looked back
Hey are there any campaigns with space for 2?
Now i have a hard line against homebrew, I run raw games
If this is that damage formula you told for myself, I'll remind you that it doesn't pan out that well vs what everyone else can do
This goes beyond envy and delves into "I'm close to useless now, am I?"
Reason I like doing very long adventuring days because it soon does not matter if someone can “heal better”. Because that is a very limited resource you desperately need more of.
That’s more damage than a paladin by a mile by your level tho? Granted it’s for one turn
Anyway bloodline you should just look at things you can do that aren’t combat related
Combats is only 1 out of the 3 pillars of play after all.
That too, rangers have a ton of utility, namely expertise
Or do something that isn’t damage too.
I've already tried that and said in chat how that went. Spellcasting is not going to be great either because of the spell point rule
Where to find dm
Here, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
And? I don’t see how that gets in your way.
And points for trying to say that spells like Goodberry are useful and unique for me, but that doesn't exactly make my character's existence sunshine and rainbows
That just means you also can cast more low level spells.
Plus, expertise takes no spells
Why worry about having a unique spells?
You’re a gloomstalker, I’d be worried if your character was sunshine and rainbows
That is also a lie. Spell points means that our wizard, Bard, and Cleric can cast high and low level spells as freely as they have MP for it (which is a lot at 47MP each for level 11)
And? They just run out spamming bigger spells
They can cast cantrips and smaller spells on smaller enemies
And you can shoot enemies
And? I still don’t see the issue
Same here
If our eventual level 11 Wizard really wanted to, they can cast fireball 15 times before needing to long rest
And?
And I'm saying this because spell points means that they can be as damage dealing or well rounded as they would like with close to no drawbacks
Yeah and run out very quickly
is the issue that your GM is giving the other players preferential treatment by making homebrew rules that benefits them while not receiving the same treatment yourself?
Compare that to me being level 11 and having a maximum of... 19 MP with third level spells being the highest I can cast
Well you’re a half caster
Vs 3 spellcasters with 47 MP and 6th level spells as the max
That’s, like, to be expected
You wouldn’t have 19 spell points at level 11
4 points for 4 level 1
6 for 3 level 2
And 9 for 3 level 3
4 + 6 + 9 is 19
Not how that works
Well, it is how it works for this campaign
You would have 38 by level 11.
Just called mana points
Clearly you don't like ranger, so just play something else.
If you don’t like the game you can just play a different one as well
There is nothing else. Everything else that is remotely useful is taken
Nothing keeping you there.
It took me 2 months to find this one campaign, and I had to pull a few strings to get there
And the rest of the 2 months was ghosting, rejection, and being verbally torn apart by a few DMs who loved to harass and bully new players
So?
It took me a month to find a campaign and it was horrid so I left, if you aren’t enjoying something it’s better to just leave than not have fun and not enjoy your role in the party
Just because it took time to get doesn’t mean it’s valuable
So I've accepted my weakness is the sunken cost fallacy because my options can be counted with 1 finger
Hi!
Gooooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
Just make your own group
What even IS my role that some other people can't already do I their sleep?
Host a game that’s like 3-4 session long. Now you have a group to play with.
I’m also on the hunt for good dnd groups (I’m already in one that is amazing)
Would take just as long hunting for a group but you still get to play by running very small games
Expertise, ungodly high first round burst, skill proficiencies (a lot), and a lower dependency on resources
Plus, gloomstalker cool
Expertise being double proficiency?
Ye
Insane amount of proficiency and having burst dmg
And first round bursts... idk, it doesn't seem that impressive for now, but I'll believe you
And I spent all that time talking about our team composition and homebrew rules to try to explain how resources are close to overflowing for the ones that rely on it
Also high mobility compared to everyone else
And clearly stealth based on the previous convo
Our first 3 sessions were in the Death House in Curse of Strahd
Gloomstalker is the strongest in terms of stealth
I have a fun question. What is everyone’s favorite kind of party?
Also ability to have things like info on what your fighting before you do with things like favored enemy and primeval awareness
Nearly 50 damage in one turn on average for a first level spell is pretty sweet, idk
That’s the old (and rather bad) 2014 PHB version
One where people actually care for the game, and respect the DM. That’s all I need.
Mine are the ones where the game is more limited, but everyone is having fun and having a specific dynamic/thing for the game
42 roughly without
I've played in combat one-shots, one of them with a gloomstalker ranger. I nearly beat out everyone else. It is demonstrably not "useless" in combat, and half the class is about an entirely different pillar.
No one knows each others classes or anything else about it each other beforehand, make it immersive (unless they, due to background, know each other of course)
I love games where everyone is invested and there’s a good amount of roleplay/plot
I don't see how. For moving as an individual, we have a Goliath Rogue for that (don't ask, I wouldn't know)
For moving as a team, we have about half of the team who wouldn't care about stealth
Peak dnd right here
One where everyone knows what they are doing, but don’t try to make a very broken character with a tiny bit of homebrew
I know Gloomstalker is strong with stealth, just not how I can leverage that
Flank from a dark place, barrage people with bullets/arrows
Is it obvious?
Can’t be targeted by spells if you can’t be seen.
Can easily scout or steal things.
And of course surprise enemies.
That currently are lucky to do more than 10 piercing damage
Getting surprise helps get rid of key enemies fast
Oh wow! That’s very different than what I enjoy. I love it when everyone has come together beforehand and made characters who work well together so the group can be invested in each other’s characters and have more congruent stories and lore. It’s so cool how differently everyone likes to play!
Maybe I should try that sort of thing some day!
You took sharpshooter, use it. You have spells, use them.
Ophid’s point was that missing doesn’t help, but if you have advantage then it is absolutely worth using it.
Huh, that’s…a unique opinion
Many people have an entire session dedicated to making sure that doesn’t happen
I mean yeah from a background perspective that's lovely! Never tried that, we've finished our first campaign of a year a couple weeks ago
But even if the PCs know each other I prefer not to "optimize" a party mechanically, e.g. just cause one is a Paladin doesn't mean noone else can be - in fact all could
We have an Arcane Archer, a Wildfire Druid (me) and another Druid lmao
Noice
Cool
Also I died in today's session because we got very unlucky, but got reincarnated as an Half-Orc. So yeah that was fun
Isn't stealth tossed out the window the moment you actually attack someone?
Also, I can't exactly tell you how I can make stealth work when most of our combats so far were in a 4x5 area tops when actually getting to said enemies means they already see me or might as well have
I enjoy a party where everyone gets a chance to shine, and where characters come to the table with preexisting bonds and desires.
If the enemy can’t see you, you still have advantage no?
Plus, skulker next level
No dnd class is going to be good at everything. Find your niche. You aren’t playing a ranger, you are playing a ranger character who does their own thing.
For example, I’m currently playing a character who is physically pathetic, agile as a tank playing the national anthem at max volume and with the charisma of a venomous toad. But he’s a great doctor and is incredible at getting out of locks and creative solutions.
As in, by the time the combat starts, I am already in melee range of 2 or more enemies
That…might be on you
i really like pig orcs better than the green warcraft orcs
If they can’t see you they can’t cast many spells at you
You also will have advantage on attacks and they have disadvantage.
Plus good if you need to run away
I struggle to believe that the largest combat map you've been on is 4x5 tiles.
To say that literally all of our combat locations were cramped is the understatement of the month
Either horrendous DM or your fault.
So get out of melee
I agree! I don’t like to optimize, I just like to know lore. Sometimes your entire party ends up being unable to throw a punch or have a half-way intelligent idea.
Lore is PEAK. I also love to see how DM’s tie the lore into the world
The smallest combat map I've been on is easily 5 times that size.
Again
Our 3 sessions so far have been in the Death House in Curse of Strahd
i found something on D&D Beyond Homebrew called 'cup of hot chocolate'... I am not disappointed! (https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/3147886-cup-of-hot-chocolate)
Yeah definitely! We're really trying to get better at RPing now
Me too!
Anyone have any tips on getting started with dnd?
In other words, inside a house in very tight tunnels and small rooms
Getting turned into a half orc was crazy for that lol
Oh god, the Death House?
Then you’re just out of your habitat. You’re a ranger for sakes sake.
idk... I'd reccomend that you watch videos and walkthroughs...
Yes. The Death House. Get the picture?
And?
How have you spent 3 whole sessions just in there?
Meaning you have plenty of stealth opportunities
Oh wait i should've specified, like tryna start a campaign with others 😭
Well, actually
Kill the lights everywhere, you’re the silent, swift and unseen death archer
Have you thought about using your ranger abilities to avoid combat/to find hiding spots.
I remember when I played in The Death House... I willingly let one of the kids possess me
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel.
I usually just find a dm and meet new people!
Oh thx!
Finding a campaing has lowk been too hard lately.
That, also works 😭
Gotta love being a DM, it’s much easier to
I've had this idea of a homebrew campaign to dm but I've never dm'd before 😢
Ah so hype, I'm on session 5 in my my 13 day streak of games before I'm off for Christmas,
First session was getting there and exploring floors 1-3 (and getting possessed for the crime of leaving a room first)
Second session was exploring the basement and getting ready for the boss
Third and most current was killing the boss and escaping
So get some practice
I'm a DM as well but organising can be tiring and honestly I enjoy being a player more anyways.
I’ve dmed, if you’d like a co-dm !
Hi a DM as well, I’m Nugget!
Things are easier when you just DM short campaigns.
Are there any decent necromancy spells for level 2 and 3?
Don’t need to do the big thesis style games the modules currently have
Level 2 and three spells or characters
Me and my friends (who I usually play with but personal things happened to one of them) just swap between me and the other dm for campaigns.
Things I need in life:
- A billion dollars
- A loving wife and family
- A cool endless D&D campaign with a close-knit group of friends
Allies just stumble into fights. Plus, DM and a few others keep saying it's my fault for "splitting up from the party"
And again, I don't know how I can find a place to be stealthy in the middle of a 5 foot tunnel with 3 people with heavy armor
Ray of sickness for a helpful debuff or False life to protect yourself.
Cause fear for another style of debuff and control
Level 2 and 3 spells, mb
Don’t forget food and water
Fair enough
the billion dollars will take care of that
Revivifyyyyyyyy
Peak
That is a spectacular point
I dm'ed once for friends and told them beforehand it's just gonna be 3-4 sessions
Was very refreshing and took the pressure off of worldbuilding/delivering for me
I'd rather be a player for now though 😅
Best recommendation I have is to just run campaigns that’s 4-6 session long
Give me a second
Really helps with burnout
Oh thanks!
For me preparing a world and writing a story tends to be more interesting than actually running the campaign anyways. I always end up kinda tired by session 6-8 and want to move onto newer things.
If this was referring to me
Paladin kept casting light on the bard. Making matters worse, I was the only level 2 character who did not have dark vision
Dnd is the most fun when you know all the players beforehand.
Fair haha
I felt that. I change how I worldbuild so I avoid world building fatigue
I mean from now on
If you’re ever in a situation like that again, kill the lights
It's not on the wizard spell list sadly
This is true. Especially when you know each other's sense of humour.
You didn’t specify
LOL TRUE
Sorry, mb
The top 2 are more probable than the 3rd
THIS
Sure, but I'm hoping this doesn't result in either the enemies getting the jump on me
Or half my team doing their best Leroy Jenkins impression
You have darkvision no?
If I were you, I would just roleplay as the incompetent one and take notes for the party and make them do the fighting as a bit
Unfortunately
I have it now, but I was the last one to get it
God I have a cool idea for a D&D character that's heavily inspired by hellboy but at this rate I'll never be able to run it
Hence, in the future
That’s why I recommend the 4-6 session campaigns. Think of it similar to dating, you are testing the players and see how you all get a long with each other.
My dnd group has been together for what uh 3 years and we used to play 3 times a week
But don’t date all your players, that’s concerning/j
If it doesn’t work out after a few tries, well the group won’t be together that long.
Ok I envy you
Nah, I have met so many new freinds through dnd, if I had stayed to who I knew beforehand I would barly be able to play
already tried to join 2 online campaigns only for John DM to ditch twice
I'm envious, we manage 0,5-1 times per week
I agree! I just mean before session 1 lol
And most of the combat I had so far was
- A banshee immune to nonmagical piercing damage
- A boss who i couldn't hit for meaningful damage to save my life
- Shadows from someone taking a crystal sphere that didn't just practically surround me, but were also resistant to nonmagical piercing damage
Also disagree, I have new players joining all the time
I envy you too 😭
I’m here looking for more dnd friends as my group is not able to play until college midterms are over
Envy chain
K
Ask your DM for a magic weapon
You're playing a martial I'm guessing?
2014 Ranger
as a high school student graduating with an acute case of senioritis and too much free time with friends who take their studies 20% too seriously I need a D&D campaign yesterday
We will be doing an in person sesh though soon, excited
Also I need to make a back up in case I die again lol
Working on that for when I can get my hands on a magic hunting rifle
Ah, ok
Already rolled great stats
Yeah it's been idk how long since I last played dnd
We still hang out, but it’s mostly just doing silly things
Hopefully I can fix that this Tuesday
I…dunno if you’ll be able to do that soon. Those things are PRICEY, even when they’re not magical.
And from what I see, you need a fix fast.
Ranger. With almost OP levels of homebrew rules (that I mostly don't benefit from)
And with classes that do just about everything I can do, if not better
The last time I played a real game of dnd was a couple years ago
Me too! I have way more free time than most people
I half agree with the former, disagree with the latter
Perkins crit also benefits you, after all
I need to roll d6s bad
Or me forcing one of them to do their schoolwork <3
I guess I just don't have to study as much as others to get good results or something along those lines because I have much more free time than I know what to do with.
Doesn't sound too bad tbh. I feel like you not being able to hurt enemies is more on the dm for making them intangible to your attacks imo, unless they talked about it before the game
Remember: level 11 paladin can click a 3rd level delete button 6 times after a long rest
And spellcasters who rely on saving throws over attack rolls can get technical crits if the enemy gets a nat 1 saving throw
Are you level 11 yet?
You play with critical 1s?
Me too! I don’t study 😭😭
Cuz that’s MONTHS into the feature
Deal with what you have now
I mean I read all the material and become obsessed with the lessons/subject, but I don’t just read the same chapter 18 times and highlight things at random.
I am aware, but this is also virtually my only way out of this mess
I did have a third level 1 spell slot available that I used to return our wizard to consciousness... that our Bard effectively wasted by talking crap to Strahd himself and taking 5 slashing and 18 necrotic damage as a nonlethal hit
Similar with me. I feel like I can understand and (more importantly) apply concepts efficiently.
I didn’t think I’d ever be trying methods to age paper so I can write an in character paper
I’d use a quill and ink but that’s 13 bucks I’d rather not spend so I’ll just use a calligraphy pen
Yep...
do the coffee method and caligraphy pen
Yes!! Also what kind of campaigns do you like?
Just hit level 3 and finished the Death House
Yup, I’m using coffee
