What news from the Flanaess, fellow adventurers?
See now peeps have a place to ask questions and I shall wax poetic and ramble while not using punctuation and probably maybe sorta kinda answer their questions or not
so not much different than usual 😛
Very cool
I'll ask the first question: How have the writers been dealing with the change of the lore for various species?
Really well actually. I'm an old Greyhawk type - but with that D&D has always been about you, and your group, finding the flavor of ice cream you all love. So I've never been a super stickler for what is and is not 'canon'. Well except Canon Hazen (see inside Greyhawk joke)
To the vast majority of players who will be participating in this new campaign Lore is what is in the DMG - and what we teach them through our adventures and online interactions. That is what is important to them. Not what was in Dragon #23, an EnWorld post from Gary, or something heard around the bar at Gen Con 93'.
We've already made some changes. For example in the original Hommlet the inn was 'The Inn of the Welcome Wench'. An iconic location that is a bit dated in the sign out front. It is now 'The Inn of the Paladin Prince' - a needed change for a more inclusive campaign.
Greyhawk leaned heavily into wars around race or creature type. Those are all gone <insert poof noise here> - locals may hate a local tribe of goblinoids that have been raiding their village for generations but they don't hate and want to exterminate all goblins or kobolds.
I believe it is not our job to tell you what people or groups you should dislike. The campaign should do that itself through your interaction with it and the story. You become attached to some fun NPC's in one of the first adventure (it's gonna happen - I promise) and you find out later a local group is messing with them - you'll take a disliking to them and want to do something about it. Not because Greyhawk said that is how it works but because you're heroes and that's what heroes do.
Cool. Having gone through several years of Original D&D/White Box/0th Edition and Second Edition AD&D set in Greyhawk, you may understand why my thoughts went there. I also did some of the living Greyhawk stuff.
Ya there were some 'problems' with some of that older material. A few gods I am happy to see left off the list let us say.
I am more of a stickler for protecting the good times I had around the table - and not what was actually on the table. I can admit that some of those things had problems that 'teenage Baldman with hair' did not have the maturity to parse without somehow invalidating the great memories I made with friends.
Cherish those great memories - at the same time grow from it and realize we can all do better the next time around.
So far everything I’ve read still feels like greyhawk to me. That’s all I care about. Also curious to see if Dragonborn come from the valley of the mage, if tieflings are tied to Iuz, etc etc. I’m open to it.
To me that is your characters story to tell not ours.
I wonder if White Plume Mountain will show up in LoG
Because Keraptis is from Oerth no
And the lore of WPM is tied to him there
Highly doubt the TftYP version will.
Nah not the current 5e version, just WPM in general
Ive read Return to White Plume Mountain the old 2e module and its got some neat stuff
Give us Tamoachan if real ❤️
There are ~96 days until GenCon.
wiki's are for general lore info. This channel purpose is stated in #1365008455282331668
I’m excited for this endeavor! I’m curious, though, why LoG is being treated as a distinct format from AL. AL already has adventures in varied settings, such as Eberron and Spelljammer, why not keep Greyhawk within AL like those do?
Because it's not just a different setting, it has a whole different ruleset.
The levelling is different, the item distribution is different, the allowed sources are different (a single book: PHB 24).
LoG is just 2024+ core books.
It is not AL. Different on just about every front. Using that 'AL' moniker comes with a decade of baggage - good and bad.
What did pre-2025 organized D&D play lack that caused the invention of LoG? Is it just time for another living campaign? Is a politically powerful person angry at some aspect of AL? Is there some financial incentive?
AL has a lot of baggage from many years of rule changes that is not very desirable for many players. A different ruleset that addresses (and avoids) those issues and the baggage is part of the reason.
It also makes for an easier on ramp for new players and DMs. Here's one book for character creation and 1 page of rules specific to play with LoG.
🥲 I will miss SCAG
Is a politically powerful person angry at some aspect of AL?
I wouldn't call him "politically powerful," but The Baldman sure has some... opinions about AL.
I think most people in the Organized Play area of this discord have opinions about AL.
I had only great experiences with Baldman and his army of DMs doing AL play since 2011. I am sorry if behind the scenes AL was causing any of them headaches.
Sure, but he's the one ostensibly running the thing.
Even if apparently the AL Admins are participating as well.
it's not just behind the scenes. It is a lot of the AL rules and baggage from over a decade that creates problems.
A reset and simpler rules allows LoG to avoid the baggage, hopefully avoid the same problems, and adjust the rules to better conform to what is desired by many
I think it's been clear that WotC has a hand, other POs have a hand, and it isn't just one person's view.
He's the only one who's posted so far on this server about why, so that's who I bring up.
We still don't even know who the "other POs" even are yet.
And as, he has noted, it is based on research and surveys. It isn't one person's opinion.
Unpublished/shared surveys, sure.
I mean, I'm sure there are people who want that sort of thing.
How many people, and the demographic, I'm still curious.
Yes, there are some who want some of the things LoG is proposing.
Multiple things can be true at once. The Baldman doesn't not have strong opinions about AL. I'm sure other people do as well. There are lots of ways to play D&D. I don't think it's inaccurate to say The Baldman had a hand in spearheading this OP, from the way he talks about it.
As a DM and as a player, I'm just excited to return to something closer to how AL felt in the early days. Powerful characters and items had weight! It felt awesome to be at a high T2, much less 3 and 4.
Factions mattered! Your choices mattered! That's the stuff that has me itching for more LoG.
I still like AL, but it's a whole different beast now.
As an AL DM, I think getting magic items has gotten too easy and it's hard to balance encounters from table to table.
AL seems to be a place where players like to curb stomp, which is fine if that's your thing.
not just easy to get, but easy to have everything.
I’ve been playing 5e since launch, but only played AL since the new PHB dropped. So the only AL I know is the current one. It definitely needs a shot in the arm. Every game posted in my area is DC/CCC content, and when I checked out the official modules I could see why. A few Strahd runs here and there.
I’m definitely intrigued and excited by something new and more focused. Outside of this channel though, I’ve heard very little about it
I do lol. I'm not very subtle at times. I'm especially that way online where tone is often hard to convey. I try to speak very cleanly and to the point trying to be very clear but at the same time it can come off very condescending which is never my intention.
My opinions are of course valid no further then the end of my nose but always happy to discuss why I feel the way I do, why I make the choices I do, and to the best of my allowed ability share.
I'm not going to share a csv dump of the survey because there is a lot of private info in there (people share to much lol) and we did the work. The details are ours.
More than happy to share rolled up results though.
We got almost a thousand responses - initially to DMs only - then our BMG AL players - then as wide as net as we could cast with Wotc's help. So a pretty statistically significant number
So, LoG will primarily be for convention play, but what about after the GenCon launch? Will it still be primarily con-focused, or is the intention to have modules intended for casual store play?
Once the pipeline gets going you'll see almost no difference between LoG and AL in adventure access. Things will premiere at shows, be exclusive there for a while, then available for other cons for a bit (something not done now), and then available for purchase and play by anybody anywhere.
You will see some events that are show only (not many). You might see rewards change slightly between show and release (say a +1 sword that does +1d6 fire damage 3 times a day versus a normal +1 sword).
Going to big shows will get you nice physical certs while at home will just be logged on your logsheet.
We want to promote people getting out to shows now and then. Meeting people from the greater community and growing that community. Whether that is in-person or online.
is there a short term plan for making an LGS friendly storyline? because as described you're talking 2027 minimum before adventures become available at home based on con 1st access and prior publication timelines
We'll already have things hopefully ready for other cons in Q4 and for everybody anywhere Q1 2026.
I also realize that I'm ahead of the other 2 POs onboard by at least 6 months.
When everything gets grooving by spring I'd be surprised if you're not seeing an average of 2-3 new things a month.
Almost all of what we do wi be available in our VDDW as well. So you can play and participate and then be ready to run for your locals later.
I'm on my phone right now so.to be honest already surprised how much I'm typing. Thumb cramps. Its why I haven't shared any survey stuff yet. Not gonna try that from memory on a phone.
What if we double dare you?
I mean this is mostly because there is only DC & PO content still being written for AL (Although arguably if you want long form story telling like the older seasonal content some of the PO's stuff such as Baldman's excellent Moonshae adventures scratch that itch) - LoG it seems will only have new PO content and that from just 3 of the PO's - although one of them is the most active publishing PO.
BMG has weekly articles going up that are going to start getting a lot meatier.
I believe we'll see big DDB articles start in early summer leading up to Gen Con.
I coincidentally stumbled upon those just before all this was announced, I’m definitely eager to give them a go
Absolutely worth playing through some excellent adventures there.
If you want a long from series. ZODIAC T1 and T2, Makes a solid 14 part series. 😉
hi I'm a little lost, where do you find lfg?
thanks!
On a different note, one of my friends who played in the old LG days, was asking for if there was gonna be regional nature to character creation. And said something about how Australia & NZ has its own assigned region, and how other countries got there own region to create stories in. On behalf of them, whats the plan there. All good if no plans. Just curious on his behalf.
LG - There was, and wasn't, a regional nature to CCG. Creating a character was the same no matter where you lived/played - they just had a regional flavor that if you followed might make your characters life a little easier/more fun.
We will have regions/areas where stories are set in LoG. We (BMG) will be announcing our first 4 over the next 4-6 weeks. It will be up to you if you want to make a character 'from' that region - a character that travels from region to region trying to do everything (which will eventually be impossible - you won't be able to have a single character in LoG that can do everything) - or whatever mix ya come up with.
If you make a character that fits that region it will be easier for you to get into the stories - perhaps interact/join various groups of factions - etc.
Who is your hero? Is it a local kid who rises up to the challenge and saves his town or are you the mysterious stranger that rides into town and sees a problem that needs fixed.
Sharing a bit of our survey each month for those that are interested in those types of conversations:
70% of our respondents started their D&D OP with AL. Of the remaining 30% we get about 15% started in 3/3.5/LG, 10% in 4E/DDE, and the rest from other systems or pre-2000.
The average age of the D&D player is slowly coming down through the lifecycle of 5E - the average age of the OP D&D player is not. New players have no clue what OP is or why they should care.
How satisfied are you with AL right now? 24% are happy - 40% play but are ready for something new - 36% have either already hopped off the train or are just waiting for the next station.
The age disparity is interesting! My guess would be that younger players grew up with competitive video games; an organized play format that is not competitive would seem to them to defeat the point. Who cares about OP without PvP?
Only 24% being happy with AL is a staggeringly low number.
I'm not surprised at 24% with all the changes over the years.
I don't know that young people want PvP D&D lol. I think there are just so much fewer in person places that host game nights than pre-pandemic that a lot of folks are just playing with friends in home games rather than in public organized play spaces.
And that WotC isn't tending to encourage AL in any way, as well. (As a bit of anecdotial evidence - my LFGS that I go do has constantly been considering no longer running 5e nights because they don't get any outside support, and have merged them with CCG nights to try and recoup some of that. They tried to run proper AL, but again, not enough support from the community or outside it.)
I also think fewer game stores running/promoting AL and younger people may also just have gaming groups (school friends) so they don't do as much OP.
only 24% of the people who took the survey. People who are happy with AL are less likely to have weighed in a "what do you want to change about organized play" survey
Also if I remember correctly the original post was written as something akin to "What would you want in a new organized play system" which... people happy with AL probably weren't goint to weigh in on
I gotta say, despite initial confusion on why Greyhawk became its own campaign, I am VERY excited for Legends of Greyhawk. It looks like narratively and flavorfully it's keying in on what I love about Seasons 1 - 7 AL. Player driven factions, an evolving world state, a lived-in world and "on the ground" adventuring. I'm very excited for when we finally get access to the adventures for home and LGS play and wish all those playing at the cons happy adventuring! I can't wait for those new articles to drop on D&D Beyond. I love the lore stuff that BMG has been posting. And who knows, maybe some LoG influence will rub off an AL and vice versa. A healthy, cross pollinating organized play ecosystem is a win for all.
Didn’t say they did. But they may not see the purpose of organized play without it. Why not just play games with friends, what’s the point of keeping track and strict rules in a cooperative roleplaying game?
I have my own answers to these, but I’m a millennial.
ya know - lets get rid of that. We're here to talk about LoG - not AL (or what AL does/doesn't do need want blah blah blah) - LOL
The happiness # - when you look just at the DM portion of the survey - plummets - right off a cliff - right past neutron star and goes right to singularity.
To me that is the most important part of the equation. Without DM's - everything else is a moot point. Especially in my world of giant shows where demand already outstrips supply in a way that would require mass cloning facilities to meet.
They don't like a decade of rules changes, things that were allowed, now not allowed, changed, this rule was here and not there, another book, more sage advice, etc. It isn't easy being an AL DM and especially so at higher levels.
DM's should be rewarded - DM's should never get less then what a player would for an adventure - DM's are the lifeblood of any campaign and should be treated that way.
I love Greyhawk because
A - I'm old (I've been playing there for coming up on 43 years)
B - It was given an excellent refresh in the DMG
C - They aren't doing anything else with it. It is effectively ours now.
We know an Eberron book is coming out this year - we know a giant Forgotten Realms 'thing' is coming out this year. None of that matters to us. We won't be using any of it or will be affected by any of it. The entry bar to the campaign is pretty much the free rules on DDB - the bar is laying on a couple tooth picks on the floor.
We don't have to constantly twist our head 32 degrees to the side, squint, and bend slightly at the left knee to shoehorn in another adventure, or DDB thing, or whatever.
But isn't 90% of those changes - D&D rather than AL rules - so are you saying that Greyhawk will be static - no artificers, no new subclasses just the vanilla PHB 2024 forever?
Def no artificers- that's in the Eberron book
Artificer won't be in. As said that's on the Eberron book. The campaign will use Core books. New Tasha's comes out - in. FR books- out.
Adventures getting shoe-horned in - nope.
What's your plan for support outside of the US?
I think we laid it out already. Premiere, cons can apply for things, and then released to everybody.
Where can conventions apply for LoG modules?
That will be in announcements this summer (not sure on the exact process but a framework at least exists now).
I wonder if the age thing is that younger people have more open time. It's far easier to keep to a schedule for a home game for them than for those with other responsibilities. I loved AL while I had a game store for it, it gave me a chance to play since I couldn't get a game organized. It was essentially pickup D&D. If I could have had an organized game I would have preferred that though.
More survey results (because this meeting I am in is really really boring):
Favorite Things: (they could pick up to 3)
48% - Character Creation (1st party rulebooks and standard array)
44% - Low maintenance character tracking
44% - Old Seasonal Content
Disliked Things: (they could pick up to 3)
54% - Speed Leveling (once per adventure)
31% - Multiple Campaigns (different characters & rules)
28% - Item Trading
24% - Hardcover Inclusion
I think for many a home game and organized play scratch different itches. For some OP is where they do all the crazy things with no guardrails and light rules. Things that would never fly in most home games (not run by 12 year old me).
That's interesting about disliking hardcover inclusion, to me that's the bit that's most interesting, getting the chance to do a longer campaign and have more character development than pickup games. Though I guess with LoG being Con-focussed that's definitely not the setting for hardcover. I'd miss the anthologies though, those are some of my favourites
HC inclusion though is a bit odd without a fixed group. Yes, that can be done in AL, but isn't really the norm. And to be honest, HCs and their rewards are a good part of the treasure/reward issues that exist.
I think some of the weeds on hardcovers is they kinda had to be shoe-horned in, often created rules issues when mixed with everything else, and they could be very herky-jerky to run through (levels, when to level, playing other things while doing a hardcover, etc).
Honestly, these survey results are some of the most fascinating parts of this!
I'm a data guy by my day job (which I am technically at right now). I love talking if that this and that but at the end of the day I want some numbers. Give me the data.
As someone who only plays at conventions a few times a year, speed leveling is my #1 love about AL. I can try out a lot of different character types and learn what's fun, so when I do a home game campaign I play something I know I'm going to connect with. Alas, I do not seem to be typical here.
I much preferred the days of more adventures per level. I love playing a storyline on a single character, but having to level each adventure to keep up means I don't really get to experience and savor the new features each level.
have been there any news about the Advancement Poll ?
I'm sure people whose FLGS runs AL have a very different perspective.
Not yet. Because of the D8 Summit I haven't been able to talk to the team about it just yet.
Which survey is this, btw?
We (BMG) did a really big survey last year around October. Started with internal DM's, then internal players, then external people via AL channels, and then blasted out by Wotc socials.
So weird, I can't remember seeing it
We asked a lot of demographic questions upfront - then about current OP state of union, and then what they would love to see in the future if they had their choices.
BMG is not responsible for 1's rolled on Active Perception checks or dump stat Wisdom Passive Perception values.
<that is 100% a dad joke>
People were asking about some of the results - especially when it was towards "Why is LoG doing XXX?" type questions.
Seems weird to just dislike its existence, though. I get that it's hard to play a HC in AL, but then just don't? I don't know why that bothers other people.
Also like 80% of the content I run for my FLGS has been the anthology books. Folks get excited to play the bits they've heard about on the D&D news sites.
Looking back - it would be interesting to see how the anthology books fair versus the giant adventures. My guess is very very differently. We (DM's) love a quick drop-in adventure to fill a gap or unexpected need. Giant mods are work.
I like when questions or surveys lead to surprises. I don't want an echo chamber and I want my conclusions to be challenged because that is how things grow.
For me - the biggest surprise that came out of the survey was the word 'Official' - I've been playing a while - I take a little of this - little of that -steal some from this game - and smash it all together into what I need. I have books on the shelf behind me where I dislike almost every rule in the book but I'll steal the stories, art, and maps out of them all day long.
For the 5E forward players - the word 'Official' carries immense weight. They want official books, articles, Wotc stamp of approval, it is on DDB, etc. These things are REALLY important to the masses of current new players.
i mostly agree with the survey results. it's the non-standard awards and more planning that make the books an issue for me
but also i run the anthologies
Was there more surveys than the leveling up one??
yeah, I wonder if separating out Anthologies Vs Campaigns in the hardcover question would have changed the numbers
Regarding "official" I wonder if that comes from the questions being asked in the context of Organized Play.
If I want something unofficial I can just do that at home, if I'm making the effort to log and track stuff then I see the desire for that to be Official and not just some guy doing whatever (at home I am some guy doing whatever)
Yeah, I suspect anthologies vs campaigns would fair differently.
Would also be interested to see how the older, adapted anthologies fair vs. the brand new ones. Some of the older ones have more of the HC related issues.
SKT <cough cough>
WPM - Top 3 AL specific adaptations/rules that I think is and has been a huge mistake/problem.
That is an AL Admin follow-up one. My (BMG) survey was last October on a wide variety of questions.
I, the tall one of Baldness, have been personally working on this campaign for almost a year and a half now. There are many more onboard now and things are starting to gain momentum towards launch but I've put a lot of brain cells towards this.
But, I do think anthologies vs. campaign may be seen differently by many for an OP system. And even anthologies that are new may be viewed differently from just adaptations of things from older editions. Would be interesting, but also gets a bit into the weeds in areas.
Agreed, it would be a shame for anthologies to be tossed out with the campaign bathwater. I don't see why some (not necessarily all) that are new as you say couldn't slot in to Greyhawk if tonally appropriate
Ghosts of Saltmarsh
The older anthologies also weren't particularly drop-in one-shot friendly, since they were lengthy. Same issue with the Infinite Staircase adventures. ("Issue" being used lightly, since a 12-16 hour adventure has its place) The "designed for one session" adventures didn't really happen until Candlekeep.
I have a theory on this. A lot of the younger players are coming into Organized Play and D&D in a very different media landscape then what has come before. Star Wars, the MCU, the DCEU vs. DCU, video game franchises. All these things are very canon and continuity focused, and they are what dominate the media and nerd landscape. I know so many people who skip any Marvel movie that isn't directly tied into the main story/sacred timeline, for example. Or skipped Star Wars Legends because it wasn't mainline canon. People want their time investment to go towards what is "official" so they don't feel it's "wasted" and can get an eventual payoff a la Endgame. Plus it's easy to build a community around "official," it gives a common language for the modern fandom.
But I thought the survey said OP skewed much older than the general D&D playing audience?
It does - but
A - I think capturing or figuring how to capture that younger player market is important
B - In that market segment being 'official' is of much greater importance then it is to the older segment.
Organized Play is a bucket with holes in it (I use this line of thought all the time - if you've heard it before please skip ahead).
We want the players hoping into our bucket to equal or exceed those leaking out.
We do that in the easy fashion of just attracting a massive amount of players - that isn't infinitely sustainable.
We add to that by turning casual players into invested players into advocates for the campaign. Advocates help patch holes in the bucket (help new players, smooth over rough edges, pick things up when others drop the ball, etc.)
Getting players attention can be difficult - once you have it you need to make sure what you are waving in front of their faces is attractive to them. We know once you play a few games and interact with the community we can be a pretty 'sticky' bunch of peeps.
I would be curious to see what the options on the list of likes/dislikes were
Survey was mentioned #dnd-announcements message
Ah, the way it's phrased I think I assumed it was only about BMG and since I don't participate, I probably didn't think more about it.
Was there a lot of non-US response?
Whether the responses included sufficient non-US numbers matters.
Then again, since BMG is the incumbent for their domestic market, I don't think non-US respondents for their content is important.
This is just a bit of an off-hand comment I heard in Jan, but the con I tend to attend to play at Epics (CanCon, in Australia) does want to run LoG next year.
Well I kinda had to be a bit reserved in the wording - I couldn't exactly say "Hey I've been working on this massive new thing I want to launch next year and would love your feedback" - or the OP AL world might have burnt itself, and us, to the ground rioting.
Since I haven't seen it, I have no idea what was in it apart from what's been referenced. The way it was presented now was as if it was a survey about AL. How it was presented then was as if it was a survey about BMG-events. I would have replied to the first. Neither seemed to imply there was a new OP incoming. I get it's a fine line to walk. My point is mainly that the replies won't be possible to generalize across all AL communities, and they seem to vary a lot.
our first big region announcement happened today (starting to filter out to that various socials). Tied directly to what we are doing at Gen Con (which they have their big catalog release this Sunday)
Surprised that worked LOL
Question Baldman, what if the same adventure winds up at multiple conventions I go to?
In what regard?
A character can only play and received a benefit from an adventure one time. You can have multiple characters and thus play an adventure more then once if you want. This usually happens when say you convince your buddies to go to a show and they want to play A, B, and C and you already have.
Yeah, wasn't sure about per person/character limits.
Hey Peeps - The Baldman here - I am not all fancy like my amazing rockstar Social media peeps - so no snazzy graphics or meme'tastic things.
What do I bring?
The Gen Con event catalog - why does that matter? Because the entire listing for the launch of Legends of Greyhawk is out for everybody to see. It's pretty cool but then again I love me some D&D!!!!!
Question for the powers that be:
Legends of Greyhawk has been described in a couple places as a "Convention-focused experience". Will the adventures ever be made available for home/LGS play? And will any sessions of LoG run at LGSs count for character advancement and rewards? [https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1864-magiccon-chicago-and-legends-of-greyhawk]
They will 100% be released to other shows, home games, stores, and your basement if you so wish.
Convention-focused means that is where things start at - in my case I am creating the content I need to fuel the two dozen+ events I run on a yearly basis. Once done there it will continue to work its way through the system just like they always have.
doesn't matter where you play it - they all count - you just might get some cool things or perks playing at shows (like physical cert cards instead of just putting the item on your log-sheet - or an adventure that only runs at a big special event)
Great! Thanks for the information.
It seems like the latest news [https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1892-legends-of-greyhawk-characters-advancement-and?srsltid=AfmBOoo5h5srdm7DlRZIWqoVbj98_QsEoOrLD8zpFjSsLGD9-ivSsmBO] states that characters will be limited to one UC/R magic item in tier 1, and that only physically "certed" magic items will be tradeable, so an awarded item being certed and therefore tradeable would be a benefit exclusive to convention play.
We want you to play in the campaign and have fun. That's #1 - I'm a D&D dork and have been for a mighty long time (I do this because I have fun doing it - I have a day job - I do this cuz I enjoy it and it helps my hobby).
We also want you to form a community around the campaign. That could be at a convention with friends you see each year, online here in Discord land or a Virtual show, or around the table at your local stories with friends that meet once a month for a Greyhawk weekend.
All these things make the campaign better and more fulfilling. Then take that next step. Maybe you have 30 peeps playing LoG every month and a group decides - "Hey - we're gonna go to Gen Con this year and play in some big specials" - and you meet some more cool peeps and bring back stories to your community.
All these things are what make a campaign 'Alive' and fun.
Correct - The plan is to have Trading Posts at shows as well - and for a donation those trading posts can turn those non-cert'd items you got playing at home into physical items.
Thanks!
Where do I submit corrections? ;)
Shhhhhhh
Seriously though, I did find a small typo on https://www.gencon.com/events/296637, in the long description. Murder Among Thieves is spelled Amnog.
Yup
We must murder those terrible thieves of the Amnog! ✊
They stole my spellchecker
None of the three day tracks happen to be exclusively run after the expo hall is closed do they?
I’ve never been to GenCon, but I’ve heard that it runs 24/7, my understanding is that all of the LoG tracks take place during the day.
In the future, after GenCon, the various sessions will be available to be played outside of a convention setting. Last I heard it was speculated to be around 2027.
Hope that answers your question!
No clue where 2027 is coming from, it was stated to be Q1 2026.
Will be interesting to see which speculation is closer to reality...
This was mentioned on the BMG server.
I found the specific comment and a correction is needed on my part. It was stated “Sooner than 2027”, but no specific dates and any date listed to be taken with a grain of salt.
Ah yes, I missed that as it was in this chat much further up. The info I referenced was a little more recent for me.
Thanks for sharing!
Also, I do read. A lot 😉
Remembering everything exactly… not so much 😂
It doesn't actually. I'm talking about the actual paid games at GenCon as someone who is helping run a booth in the expo hall. Looking for something I can attend.
Our 3 main start times are 9am, 2pm, and 7pm. So plenty you can play each day after the hall closed.
Unfortunately none of the DDXP tracks run at night only for all parts.
Remains to be seen though. BMG still has unpublished adventures from 2023 iirc, so a 2027 release date doesn't seem that outside of pattern.
And with the announcement of the multi-table Special and the first module appearing at VDDW in July, 2026 seems very reasonable. :)
Sure, but the stated intent is very clearly Q1 2026, not sometime in 2027
Is there any information from the other groups writing for Legends of Greyhawk? It seems BMG is dominating the discussion while there are two others approved.
Not yet. They're a little further back on spinning things up though as BMG was the first PO to the table when details on the campaign were initially being worked on. I expect the other two groups (GamerConclave and West Coast Adventurers Guild) will pipe up and start chatting and sharing details about their involvement when they've got announcements ready to go. BMG folks are mostly here chatting right now about what little we can because we don't want to leave folks in the dark for too long.
I figured it would be something like that.
Howdy Kofuse! Welcome to the greatest game in the world (in my opinion at least).
This channel is for the new Legends of Greyhawk campaign, which is primarily convention focused, and might not be exactly what you are looking for. If you're looking for more specific direction, I'd recommend checking out the https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/966723268675510372
Oh, thank you very much🙏
How'd the GenCon rush go for folks?
Most people ended up getting at least some of what they wanted.
Still plenty of space for non-DDXP events though!
Agree didn't really hear folks saying they didnt get what they wanted. Though mostly I hang out places where folks are pretty in the know.
We REALLY focused our slate this year and put a lot of effort into getting a lot of tickets into the system. Now the push to drive that inventory to zero between now and the show.
We don't know how/if replays work right? I imagine there are folks that would play mods again if they are able
While we don't have final rules, I'm pretty sure, you as a player will be able to replay adventures. Characters will not be able to.
That makes sense
just means more characters!
Id need more hours in the day to play much more at Gencon though 😄
VVDW my friend. More D&D after GenCon!
I believe this answers that question... #legends-of-greyhawk message
ah yeah that sure does! guess you could do the special a few times at Gencon then 😄
Good Morning LoGers! hope you all are sticking it to Iuz and thwarting that Elemental Evil.
Zagyg would like y'all to pay more attention to his legacy. Thankyewvewwymush. 🙂
Why certainly, and congratulations
Bring back DM Quests. 🥺
6 months behind is an understatement. I am doin’ my darnedest to get the west coast team caught up, though!
Does this mean we might hear more about the region the West Coast Adventurers Guild has soon?? 😄
Wild coast and bandit kingdoms? We’re in contact with some of the living Greyhawk contributors. Nothing is set in stone yet except that Mike Olson is the story lead, and Jay Africa is on board. Both are exceptional gentlemen, whose reputation speaks for themselves. Their most recent collab work should be popping up on the DM’s guild under Wcag and strategicon. The rest of WCAG projects I shouldn’t spoil on their behalf 😉
That’s fair! We’ve been spoiled to know WCAG is doing “something” with LoG but mums been the word. 🤫 Few of us been keeping our eyes peeled for any news when it’s announced 😎
Something is a good start! Has Thomas V. announced at all what his team is up to?
Not that I’ve heard or seen. Mr Greg Marks let us know who the POs are for LoG but otherwise the only stuff I’ve seen has been from BMG.
I could just not be in the know too. Only really keep my eyes here and BMG discord
If you need any more help I have a fair number of old LG BK people who would be happy to pitch in. And a bk centric LoG discord server just waiting for materials to be available for play 🙂
Our side of this is purely volunteer base; so we never turn down networking opportunities or connections. Fair warning, pay sucks! 😉
If you’re serious, shoot a dm. Promise I don’t bite!
Good Morning Legends and LoGers ☕
Hey there, I heard my name had been mentioned here re: LoG so I figured I oughtta poke my head in.
I'm in touch with former BK Triad member Casey Brown (not on this server, apparently!) and am eager for him to pitch in in some capacity, whether as a consultant or a writer or whatever. We had a good conversation about our vision for the Combination of Free Lords in 576 CY, which is a very different place from the Bandit Kingdoms of 591 CY in terms of character and tone. I'm super-excited about it!
Casey literally wrote the book on LG BK so good choice there 😄 And yes I imagine 576 is wildly different from 591 and (if LoG goes on long enough) if history repeats itself we will get to see the transition from actual bandit kingdoms to vassal state of Old Wicked
Coincidentally, I happened to have bought his book at the BK a couple years ago for a totally unrelated purpose. When I saw him mention it on a YouTube stream, I was like, oh, that guy! I missed LG altogether, myself -- I didn't do anything really with organized play until the AL came along.
Not to plug for a friend, but it is a really interesting book. I wish they had them for all the regions.
Same! But also the BK seems to have been a bit of an outlier in terms of the sheer amount of content they produced. It's really impressive.
I think it had the benefit of being the only region playable for 500+ miles in any direction if you were in Texas 😄 not to mention a very distinct different flavor. I know anecdotally a lot of folks appreciated the challenge of the region. Not just how hard the fights were, but how they were pretty quick to toss out significant penalties if you were caught being all lawful goody!
Surviving there really felt like an accomplishment.
Well; I’m happy to travel to cons. I can get involved anywhere that needs support in growth and organization—I have the resources and capacity to take on a project or two…. Or three….
So if Texas, Utah, Oklahoma, Colorado, Canada, Mexico, or any place that needs it—if they can get me there, I’m happy to help.
Yes but this isn't the channel for discussing it (please check the channel description or use #channel-guide to find the best channel for a topic)
Look for Play By Post or text-based D&D games.
So, LoG games probably don't exist yet in any situation not using voice because I think right now it's entirely in person or at Virtual D&D Weekends.
However, more generally for D&D, there are creative ways to play it and one of them is "Play-by-Post" or "PbP" for short. Loosely, this is the exchange of the table done by typing stuff out in postings. This obviously alters the pace of a game, but some people love it. I unfortunately don't have a lot of details on where to find a PbP.
See UndyingNoob's post to help you know where to go for more!
I see some talk of West Coast (potentially?) being Bandit Kingdoms, was this the California region? I remember up here in the Portland, Oregon area, we were Duchy of Urnst.
We were not originally BK. However, what happened then isn’t the same as what’s happening now 💜
West Coast Adventurer’s Guild (me and my team) are taking up BK and Wild Coast.
If you have a large scale event in mind, I used to live in SE Portland / Clackamas County area. I’d love an excuse to visit—just connect the current organizers and I, I’ll make a pitch and am pretty mobile.
Speaking of, do you have any cons for the foreseeable future where you know you’ll be running LoG content? I used to live in Cali and moved for work, but lots of my friends are still on the west coast and would love to do some LoG content closer to home for them.
Or I should say, anything you can tell us about! 😎
San Diego comic con is running content this year. All other dates / times are currently hush hush until at least Thursday
Oh that’s something exciting to look forward too 😁😁
So, if GenCon isn’t a thing but San Diego is… come find us in mezzanine 16AB.
We will have a similar schedule of content, along with WCAG’s story arc for AL. We have some fantastic writers doing a story series that started on a cruise ship. It made port in chult, waterdeep, and neverwinter so far. Baldur’s gate is next 😄
I saw that event on your website! That would have been on heck of an experience
D&D on a cruise ship is such a great idea. 🚢
& the boat rocks to the side and everyone needs to make a Dex save or fall Prone. Your call if it is players or characters. 🙂
How is everybody doing today? Folks getting ready for Game Con Canada / Origins / GenCon?
Yes / Yes / Yes
Then again I never stop working on Gen Con - year round - it is my only show that falls into that bucket
Yes and yes here! Well for origins and GenCon.
Otherwise, doing alright.
I can see why. I’m sure lots of folks In this channel will be adding cons to their schedule. Other than the big big cons, what are your favorite cons?
Same question for you @rancid sage
The Baldman's gonna say Winter Fantasy. XD
Most of the cons I went to were Blizzcon and similar like 15 years ago lol
So going more recent, I’d say MCC cause it was this year.
I mean smaller than that one
Like for me in college Aggiecon or Owlcon
I wouldn't say Winter Fantasy is in the realm of "big con" like GenCon though
"Big con" has to break like at least 20,000 people, surely.
It premieres stuff because it's BMG's convention
Winter Fantasy is kind of a Medium, like GameHole and GaryCon.
Small is like Polar Vortex or d8 Summit.
You probably haven't heard of most small cons that aren't in your region. :)
I guess there’s also an element how how DnD focused. Winter fantasy from what I gather isn’t huge but it’s very DnD focused
Because it's BMG's convention. XD
Exactly
Conventions for everything!
Hi guys
So it's not really a "big con" so much as it's notable when you're talking about conventions run by the main OP that's also running LOG.
But yeah, if the question is "What regional cons are your favorite," then probably the ones that are near you where you don't have to shell out for a hotel room! (Or at least don't have to shell out for air travel)
well whats about you talk
This channel is for the upcoming Legends of Greyhawk general discussion, fyi.
Valid. I was curious for some names, I always liked going to local/regional cons
Quest Con in Orlando a personal favorite. Small hotel, great selection of vendors, and relaxed. Plus its across the street from Universal for anyone who wants to go to Horror Nights.
Winter Fantasy is fun because I get to spend time and actually hang out with the other DMs rather than is all being super focused on our next games.
ya Winter Fantasy is about 500 people. I keep it small and focused on purpose. We bring in a few vendors to cover the basics (no duplicates) and we do all our big fancy meetings and presentations there (like DM of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Awards, etc.)
It feels like a bigger show from an OP standpoint because since we own it front to back - we can do whatever we want there - so we bring out the big guns and have fun. You will not find a show anywhere that backs as much special OP stuff into a show for the cost. Fort Wayne hates money.
Our schedule is laid back and relaxed. There is no hectic. Everything is in one place. We have nice big gaps so you can actually go sit down and eat lunch and then come back and play.
So what youre saying is I need to come to indiana in the winter
I mean, Indiana and Winter are why I've only been once, but I enjoyed myself while in the building. :)
GenCon is my one "big con" Premiere Con that I fly/hotel for
ya at this point we only get a 'real' winter there about once every 4-5 years now. When we do it can be a bit 'fun' - like a few years ago when they actually shutdown the roads (legally not allowed to drive unless it was an emergency) - so almost none of the restaurants and such opened up because their staff couldn't go to work.
Most years I'm in shorts
And plans for a "younger players" track (eventually) @low bluff
My kids are of the age they are starting to get interested in Dads dice beyond just goofing around with them
Get them interested early and often! Make them TTRPG pros 😄
All tracks are younger kid tracks LOL. We've had many a middle/high school D&D club come through.
fair enough! The sooner I can justify con trips as "you know for the kids" the easier my life will get 😉
'Family Outings'
hahaha the message for it deleting a gif is hilarious
For me it's more being LGBT in Indiana, but that's out of your control.
OK, let's chill on the Indiana hate. Proud Hoosier for most of my 50+ years on this planet! 😉 😆
"Hey kids, how would you like a week off school to go to Winter Fantasy with me?" Yeah, might just sell. 🙂
I live in the South, but I'm pretty fortunate there are two (soon to be three) regional cons only for gaming and two huge cons that include gaming within a short drive or public transit ride from my house.
I'm a short drive from Pax Unplugged so I should prioritize that one for sure
Is there a link or something that explains why LoG when we have AL? or what the difference is?
LOG is more convention-centric, with a few throughline storylines by various POs writing stuff. It's set in Greyhawk and it only uses the PHB 24 for character options. It's proposed to be slower to level, and more strict with magic items. If you are able to make it to certain specific conventions, you can influence the storyline to some degree.
AL has the wider breadth of adventures, and is community-driven, with anyone being able to write adventures in any style. It is more accessible for FLGS and home games. It's set in the Forgotten Realms (and to a smaller extent Dragonlance, Eberron, and Ravenloft) and while it uses the PHB 24 for its base classes and rules, it is open to a lot more 2014 player content. It is more generous with levels and magic items.
This makes me sad but I also get it - just know we always have your back (as does the convention center, hotel, and community there - otherwise we wouldn't be there)
Different campaigns for different vibes. AL became a little more of a wild free-for-all after 2019, LoG is closer to what AL used to be - More story driven, character choices matter, everyone isn't a god. Both are great for different reasons.
Slower leveling too which some really appreciate
is being a GOD so bad ?
Yeah, because other people who don't have a home game feeding them perfect gear don't have as much fun when they play with those that do.
Honestly, whats the fun in that? Power creep is a thing and when you can do everything and nothing gets in your way... it gets boring. There is a reason why even gods in D&D lore get bored and step down.
I think this is a case of two options for folks with different desires
not a right/wrong
No doubt there. To everyone the experience is different. In this case, I simply wish to point out the perspective its not always a good thing or fun for everyone 🙂
absolutely!
End of the day, play what makes you happy! AL and LoG can both exisit and both groups can have a good time
This stuff tends to happen as OP campaigns get longer and longer -- the high end gets higher and the barrier to entry does too
it's not good or bad inherently. But it isn't the type of game many want to play.
In my opinion, it isn't even what I would consider the "norm" or "typical" for D&D. It removes a lot of the fun for me and can make games a lot less interesting.
I think there's an appeal to something that isn't typical for D&D. I can get typical with home games. That why I like AL.
But for folks who don't have access to "normal" D&D, that's why they have LoG.
Yeah, that's why it isn't good or bad by itself. "typical" or "norm" is a factor in people's decisions and it very well may be a factor in what WotC (and others) want in their supported "organized play" as part of their marketing through it.
I think that's where our feelings differ - Home games are prone to spiralling into Godhood and it's fine, because everyone is in on it together. In a setting where you're sharing a space with thousands of others, it's a little exhausting. (imo.)
whatever my personal preferences are (and I do lean toward lower power being more fun) its hard to argue that a nice on ramp for new players that lets them play and not speed level is a good thing to have.
in the old days there were multiple Living campaigns and I hope thats what we get again
Ft. Wayne also has Dungeon Con, MastodonCon, Pentacon, and I think 1-2 others over the years
Anyone here ever heard of Speilfreaks?
Sup
👋
I haven’t played much AL, but I’ve enjoyed it. That being said, I’m very excited to start LoG. I primarily play at GameHole and wasn’t able to find a level 1 AL game there. I want to feel like I’m playing in a regular game, as I’m the forever DM for my home group. So this sounds awesome to me and what I’ve been hoping for. Just one person’s opinion, but I’m definitely excited for LoG and hope it will be happening in October at GameHole
As a forever DM myself, I went to the MCC preview event to be a player only and was not disappointed! I hope the same holds true for you.
I’m definitely looking forward to it.
Welcome Fellow LoGer/Legend 😄
GHC will be launching their own OP program this year so you'll probably not find much LoG there this year (but go - play DnD).
Places I know you'll find LoG the next 6 months post launch:
Gen Con
PAX West
NYCC
PAX Unplugged
Winter Fantasy
Virtual D&D Weekends (every month starting in July)
Other POs will be announcing their things soon I'm sure.
Game Con Canada too I believe if you want to play this weekend!
and Origins the week after that for Midwest located peeps
For those who know / played, from a player perspective, is LoG basically still just 2024 PH for characters? (At least until new books come out)
Yes.
Miss Shu is correct. I can also state it will always be 2024 Core Books and forward. LoG will not be using older material, there won't be some special cert allowing something from Tasha's, or a weird charity item.
Morning LoGers and Legends! Hope you are all having an awesome day!
Hi, all.
Has there been anything further on LoG since January? I'm booked for every LoG event I could grab at Gen Con, but I still have some questions about exactly how things are going to work.
There have been a few things here and there, if you toss your questions out I’m sure folks will answer if they can.
Finally found a group to play with and I’ve had my first few sessions
My only regret is not doing this sooner
What Sledgehammer said. You can also go to the BMG discord where we have discussed a lot of stuff.
Was there as specific question(s) you had?
- phb 2024 only; dnd beyond strongly encouraged (with implied possible incentive to do so)
- At this time only backgrounds in the Phb are allowed, you cannot use the DMG rules for making new backgrounds to make custom backgrounds
- there won’t ever be an older book included but the possibility of a future book exists if there is a 2024 version of Tasha’s
- Greyhawk 15 years before LG, only source you need to grok what’s going on is the DMG
- first arc - Hommlet
- second arc - Greyhawk
- recommended, but not required you play those with different characters
- somebody playing all the LoG content at Gencon won’t hit level 5.
- we are expecting the first page of player rules (that covers what you need to know to create a character and play through tier one) sometime before Gencon
- we are expecting the third region to have an arc that debuts in November’s Virtual D&D Weekend, we don’t know if there is new content debuting between Gencon and November.
- We expect the first wave of content to be available for smaller cons sometime in Q4 and home play in 2026 Q1
- all of the above content is from Baldman Games, we haven’t heard publicly from the other two POs
- Relative to Adventurer's League this is Lower Magic and Slower Levelling with a much bigger focus on Convention Play
- Lower Magic -- In tier one you can only have 1 uncommon (or higher) magic item. If you find a second one, you have to choose to either lose the first or the second, there is no "vault"
- Slower Leveling, we don't have the specifics for leveling yet but we know:
- Playing in the 6 modules, + the Special at Gencon are not enough to get a character to 5th level.
- We heard a proposal of 1 mod to get to 2nd; 2 mods to get to 3rd; 3 mods to get to 4th -- which seems to be about the speed folks are expecting
- Convention Focus means these modules will premiere at cons and there may be PERKS to playing them at cons. We expect almost everything to arrive for home play eventually
- Note the caveat "almost" is there to cover for future potential items that may not appear in home play, Mr. Baldman Games has stated the intent is for all the content they create to come out for home play and that if there is content that will not follow that path, you will know, well in advance.
-- Preview Event --
Battle of Emridy Meadows is a prequel set before the campaign where you bring a 7th level character (or play a pregen). You can choose 1 uncommon magic item and have 500 gold to spend on other gear.
🥓 Good Morning ***Legends ***and Loggers ☕
Fantastic summary!
Couple caveats:
No custom backgrounds
You will be limited in number of magic items (no hoarding)
The only (current) prequel event is called Battle of Emridy Meadows
Updated to include your very good points!
Where can i find people to play with?
@red smelt Currently, LoG content is only at conventions (it will be available outside of those later), so as of this moment you can find people and games at the following conventions for preview events:
Origins in Columbus, OH
San Diego Comic Con, San Diego, CA
The official release of the LoG Campaign will be at GenCon in Indianapolis, Indiana with the following stated Conventions where LoG will be available:
PAX West
NYCC
PAX Unplugged
Winter Fantasy
Virtual D&D Weekends (every month starting in July) - these are currently hosted by Baldman Games
I might be mixing up time frames here, if someone else remembers the specifics please correct me, but some time towards the end of 2025 and start of 2026, LoG content will be available for home play, including at your local comic shop.
In case you weren't specifically asking about Legends of Greyhawk (LoG) and were thinking this was a a Looking for Group (LFG) here is the LFG channel https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227
I believe the current idea is yes available for other cons (as in not put on by a PO) in Q4 with homeplay starting up in 2026
I kinda expect non-PO cons to get access the same time as home games: ie, paying for it when it goes up on DMs Guild.
We do want a way for other Cons to get access to things prior to them going up - we just need to figure out what the fair and equitable way to do so is.
We (PO's) are the ones paying the costs to create all the content upfront (much like I've done for AL for almost a decade). We then use it at our shows - get our $$ worth out of it - then it goes up for everybody else. I have never been against others having content (and have lets other shows use mine in the past - especially so for charity type events) - I just need to find a way to do it that supports them without undercutting the things that pay for it to start with.
There is a path where everybody wins, everybody is playing D&D, and that one friend still has crappy dice that he just needs to throw away.
It’s worse when that one friend thinks they are his lucky dice 💀😭
I LOVE THIS. Hopefully the info on this comes out sooner rather than later just so folks can plan. I imagine a lot of those June Updates we are expecting will start flowing soon 😄
I'm really hoping - I will keep leaning on the PTB
In the meantime is it worthwhile for smaller con runners to reach out to BMG directly or just wait patiently?
I would say post Gen Con - I'm not going to have any answers before then (and really won't have the bandwidth to make those answers materialize).
Thanks for everything you are doing to get this off the ground BTW
In the meantime, word of Lordship of the Isles for the Florida/Wisconsin PO group has emerged from Quest Con Orlando announcements.
Oooh where
I can't link it. But look up Quest Con Orlando on Facebook.
Found it, awesome
Florida/Wisconsin? An odd pairing of states
They have a shared identity as vacation destinations
I can't tell if that's a joke or not. 🤔
There is a PO who is from WI but now lives in FL and runs big cons in both places. Lordship of the Isles is the FL region.
Are there still only the 3 POs, or have others joined the fray?
Was there an announcement here?
Even their Facebook announcement was lacking in information
Enjoy Origins for those that are attending! 😄
Oooh fun!
Woot! Let there be more adventures and regions to explore! 🎉
Really thrilled about seeing where the new POs like GameConclace and West Coast Adventurer's Guild are gonna take all the new content!
It's gonna be so neat to see all the regions each PO has, once they're all announced and all the conventions begin!
But now guys let's take this with a Grain of Salt... I'm a 3.8ft Tabaxi Bard
Ummmm, this might be the wrong channel. I don’t believe Tabaxi is allowed in LoG since it is limited to the 2024 PH.
LoG is Legends of Greyhawk which is a specific organized play campaign. Posts about a Tabaxi Bard being so fun probably belong in #character-discussion or #dnd-discussion .
You can always be a gnome in a cat furry suit.
For some reason I read this and instantly pictured Mario in the cat suit 😂
It’s me meow-rio
Do I have to bring a device capable of accessing D&D Beyond to the game? Or is a hard copy of the character acceptable, as long as the character's set up on D&D Beyond?
(I’m not official I’m just a big fan) as I understand it dnd beyond is encouraged for chargen but you you don’t have to use it. You certainly can print it out and play with that. I generally like to make my own hand written sheets, but I built in dnd beyond, and have a printed copy from there as well as the sheet I prefer to use.
Oh and if anybody was looking for it, tracks C and D at gencon have a few tickets available today!
All of that is great, and correct, advice
So like
Is this In person
Or something that's possible to join via Discord calls or something?
Legends of Greyhawk is an official organized D&D play designed for conventions. So it's meant to be played in person with other folks at a convention.
That said I believe the adventures will eventually be released for public access/use later.
Although, it is debuting at D&D Virtual Weekends in just over a week.
To echo Vid, not only is it going to be at VDDW, VDDW has its own region and will have played there first premieres for that region.
He VDDW will be through Baldman Games, you can find further details at their website: https://www.baldmangames.com/virtual-dd-weekends/
Hi, all. So I'm looking at the "Character Creation Specifics". Point 2 says, "It also allows you to customize your character's origin, should you desire to do so." What does that mean? Can we use the custom Background options from the DMG? https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1892-legends-of-greyhawk-characters-advancement-and
Hi Ken! The short answer is no customer backgrounds.
The more extensive answer is we are allowed to use only character options from the PHB, which does not allow for custom backgrounds as they are not called out or explained. There is currently speculation that this might change in the future, or be explained in greater detail when the official rules release.
Thanks! So... what IS that sentence above referring to, then? Was it a mistake?
Your guess is as good as mine, however I suspect its more about the Species stuff than anything else. All the new ones allow you to customize your character pretty fluidly. You can be say Human but a small creature, which wasn't an option before. The same holds true for a lot of other Species specifc stuff.
They've also suggested that some LoG specific backgrounds might be a thing for the future.
Its also been stated that another issue with Custom Backgrounds is DND Beyond can't (currently) handle custom (2024) backgrounds and LoG is very unlikely to adopt options that D&D Beyond can't handle
I will just point out that following the guidance for character creation in D&D Beyond (so that only Core Rules is checked) WOULD allow for any content in the DMG to be used... it's just that the D&D Beyond folks haven't implemented an official character options from the DMG for characters yet (other than magic items).
thats both reasonable, and makes me more annoyed with DDB
(And yes you can sortof hack one in, but it uses the 2014 perks and you have to add a feat manually, and probably end up with not quite the right proficiencies)
yeah theres some homebrewed ones too
i already put request for 2024 custom background support into them
I am an optimist that believes eventually custom backgrounds will be allowed since at the end of the day its really just pick 3 attributes (gain +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1, pick an origin feat )
yeah, should have been looser in the base rules really and it wouldnt have been an issue
Yeah its one of those things where in a home game your DM clearly just says "oh you want to swap attributes or origin feat?" fine
but in Org Play, where you are trying to make chargen PAINLESS, and not have to field 1000 support messages 😄 you stick to what the tool does
and then you still field 1000 support messages x.x
yes but about different things 😄
All true! lol
The basic intention right now is to make it as easy as possible for new players to join OP and make it as stressfree for DM/GMs too.
Its also entirely possible the official launch chargen rules will allow custom backgrounds -- we dont technically know
in the meantime, just take farmer
Don't tell me how to play my character(s)!
*makes sure to NOT pick famer just to spite Sledge 😉
oh man, im playtesting one of the epics and me and a buddy went with farmer chars, buying trident pitchforks
any of the ones for magic initiate
but i had to switch to the hermit one so my healers kit was worthwhile as a cleric
Yeah origin feats seem like some are:
A) useful to everybody
B) very useful to some people
C) Mostly Flavor
more or less needing to pick a background your key attribute can get weirdly limiting if you don't like the origin feat on one of your options
yeah certain classes and stat layouts got weirdly pinched/pigeonholed
but mostly its okay
I really don't like Crafter - mostly useless unless you're saving up for something expensive. Savage Attacker is just bad from a game design standpoint (slows down play, often forgotten, tiny mechanical benefit).
I just wish it would stop you from applying both stat increases to the same stat, the builder in beyond doesn't prevent it and I keep seeing character sheets with all 3 points in one stat
I’m not wild about tavern brawler though if you’re already going to be unarmed or frequently get in combat without your weapons it’s good I suppose
Nor should all sailors be monks 🙂
It is really thematic though, it makes sense sailors get what they get from tavern brawler
and they didnt put charisma with it so its not good for the new dance bards
You know what the easiest fix would be is just let any background take any three abilities
yeah
Oh well there are plenty of good options and I can’t imagine any DM being upset if you said “look my background is mechanically “farmer” but I left the farm at age seven and have sailed the seas since”
my hermit was like "from farming community, cloistered to deal with crop issue involving fungal growth, called on pelor and the light dried up things to better growing condition" now off to find new growing techniques and crops"
Cause the bard sang “sailors fighting in the dance hall”, that’s why.
Does anyone remember when LoG stuff might be available for home play? (or in this case, for use at the FLGS) For some reason, I thought I remembered Q1 2026, but I wanted to be more ready for it when the time comes as I might have to see if the store and it's attendess are on board for running it.
I believe it was Q1, but possibly very late this year.
Dave from BMG has rough estimated that adventures MIGHT start being available for other cons (ie ones not directly supported by a PO) In Q4, and for homeplay as early as Q1 2026.
Its certainly not an official statement from LoG proper and had a lot of wiggle room on it to boot. I am also not sure if that is meant to apply to the other POs content.
The Baldman implied BMG was 6 months ahead of the other POs in terms of being informed on this thing, so I would imagine that also means being 6 months ahead of the others in terms of publication as well.
Yes with QuestCon Orlando (September) debuting Lordship of Isles, they are right around 6 months behind the Preview content from Magic Con
If I Had to guess at the "Goal" it would be ~6 months of premiere organizer only exclusivity. then ~3-6 months of available for other cons. Then Home Play
Which IMO is a pretty nice set up, plenty of incentive to partner with POs to get fresh(er) content, enough of a window for Non-Exclusive Con Only that you can run cons yourself and still charge enough to cover costs, and not so terribly long that folks that just dont want to play at cons are left out
So, 9-12 months potentially. OK.
Worth mentioning that getting it to non-PO cons is aspirational, and they haven't announced any actual plans for that to happen.
Oh absolutely -- its all aspirational and from one PO of Four
Good to know, but for my purposes, not a Con.
Sure. It was mostly a comment directed to Sledgehammer Jack that the "window for Non-Exclusive Con Only" is still unconfirmed.
Man. That's a TOUGH choice, but I'm committed to be there for the charity auction on Saturday. Otherwise I'd jump on that Track C ticket!
So flavoring an elf as a half-elf is acceptable, yes? The character I have in mind is the child of a Rhenee father and an elven mother, so he doesn't really fit in anywhere.
was there a thing in the PHB that said that orcs and elves can be reflavored as half orcs and half elves?
I can’t find the reference, but I believe you can flavor your character as being from mixed parentage; you just have to pick one of the two species as your dominant one and use it as your template (e.g., use human or elf if you want to be a half-elf)
Huh that’s interesting
That’s not actually in the books, it was in the UA but didn’t make it into the phb
could I flavor my orc as a half halfling?
Honest answer, I don’t see why not?
Father was an orc army guy. Mother was a halfling waitress (assassin)
Mechanically you’re one or the other I don’t want to police your backstory 🙂
But I’m just an Internet rando
Thats exactly what I've done. My halfling orc is a Warlock, so I've taken Lessons of the First Ones to give him Lucky as a nod to his Halfling origins
But his core species is Orc
You could always use a Tasha Background to do something similar
Not for LoG
can't use Tasha
oh, shit wrong channel lmao
Apparently it caught enough flack in the UA that they abandoned putting it in the PHB, and now there is no mention whatsoever about mixed parentage in the PHB.
Yeah I think that’s realistically more a setting decision for the table anyway
that's a damn shame, coming from a mixed heritage player.
Right?
The phb does give instructions for how to use species from older sources
I do get it though: while people were miffed at the whole "pick one" idea, in practice they already were by virtue of being a Half-Elf or Half-Orc in the first place, because half-Elf half-what?
Which still didn't solve the main issue in the first place with half-orcs and half-elves: that they shouldn't have been singled out.
but I thought LoG doesn't use older sources
It doesn't.
There shouldn't be in the future either.
I suspect not
Even in Eberron they're establishing them as Khoravar.
Which, to be fair in that setting, that's the name they use for themselves anyway.
I always liked the Eberron Khoravar
but I bring it up because you're gonna have players ask, if they can play a half elf or a half orc. And they're gonna need to be directed to flavor it. And once you introduce "flavor", they're gonna ask.. Can I be a Half Orc and Half Dwarf? Etc.
Can I be a Dragonborn Half Human, can I be a Goliath Half Gnome, etc.
The answer to all of those should be yes.
Can I be a warforged? But use the Goliath stat block ?
People might flavor in some things that aren’t traditionally associated with Greyhawk. I don’t know that it matters.
But some people will probably make a fuss
That's the "bad people aren't welcome here" vision from Baldman, right? The ones making a fuss can leave.
I think so
My Goliath is only half Warforged.
I mean a clockwork cyborg Goliath sounds awesome
And May be my next Eberron character
He's only clockwork from the waist down.
“My mother was a mermaid and my father was a Minotaur. I got the human half of both”
I seen that video. Punkydoodles does good stuff.
Oh I was referencing a petfoolery comic but I do like punkydoodles
Here me out: centaur + minotaur, the animal side of both.
wiiiiilllber
Isn't that just a jacked Shark in a way?
A shark?
Don't mind me, it's 1 Am. I'm out of it

And now back to Legends of Grayhawk discussion
For the not perpetually plugged into the news crowd, there is a Virtual D&D Weekend Next weekend, that has both the Battle of Emridy Meadows prequel special and the first of the Old Ferrond Modules - LOG-Core-1-1 - A Village Called Hommlet available for play. Link to the Event is in the Events section of this discord.
My LoG Rogue (charlatan false priest) is ready. Ratik represent.
Do we know yet for LoG what happens if a bug in Beyond exists (known or unknown), what the expectation at the table is? The reality is Beyond does have some.
Is RAW considered correct, Beyond considered correct (and what is correct changes when Beyond fixes it), or are both considered correct depending on whether you used Beyond? Is it instead DMs call?
I don't believe we have any of those answers as of yet.
Currently, as we are still awaiting the official rules, we are to follow what is in the PHB. I would assume for the moment the RAW is what is correct. If there are updates through an Errata or the like for the PHB, those would be what to follow.
Right now, I know there are some ways to "break" character creation by doing homebrew/custom backgrounds, however none of that is currently accepted as being allowed.
Best way to think of it is what takes the least amount of effort in creating a character at level 1? Whatever those steps are, will be official for the moment.
The goal of LoG is to get people into it and playing without to much effort.
Beyond isnt required for play so I cant imagine that Beyond would overrule the rules
"I'm half halfing, half goliath."
Interesting. I look forward to how they will address that conflict in priorities. Cool, thanks.
PHB 2024 is the source of RAW. Not a bad line of code. No DM is going to care what trick/bug you found
note there is a published errata for the PHB
Correct. Doesn't change or affect my statement.
I was so literally about to say something about primary sources and secondary sources...
LOL.
And the Baldman jumped in and said it even more concisely, and perfectly. LOL!!!
Especially about finding a "trick" on DnDBeyond because the code is weird.
Thanks. I was confused earlier by some other comments (not yours). That clears it up. Much appreciated.
The first two LoG preview Hommlet adventures will be at San Diego Comic Con, along with Emridy Meadows, the prequel multi-table epic, as well.
Hey, welcome.
This channel is for Legends of Greyhawk, an Organized Play campaign that at least for a few more months is exclusive to Cons & for online play, VDDW Weekends (think of it as an online Con), so you' re really not going to get anyone in here that can play a pickup game.
You probably want to check out #find-a-game and see what's available.
Hey Legends! LoGers! How is everybody doing? Folks getting ready for SDCC? Gencon? VDDW?
☕ VDDW
currently trying to settle on a character for the VDDW, pondering how to make a monk work without a monastery
Gen Con!
you learned kung fu from a book. A rat that knows kung fu taught you kung fu. You woke up one day and suddenly knew kung fu.
Kung Fu, the legend continues?
Turns out, it wasn't terribly hard to learn. Everybody was kung fu fighting.
Madcutta over here suggesting ninja turtles 😄
Those tabaxi were fast as lightning?
I love and hate this, if only cause I heard the song in my head and i'm sick of it 😂
A martial arts master was the handyman where you grew up and watched you being bullied by a local martial arts gang.
You saw some guy kicking in the air on the beach and decided to take up the art. Next thing you knew, you were a master at kung fu!
you are the sorcerer-equivalent of a natural kung fu master. You are the descendant of Chuck Norris.
Oh god, queue the Chuck Norris jokes!
Telling a Chuck Norris joke a day until LoG starts?
I mean there are more than enough jokes to last until then, and beyond
Monk Patron channeling Wing Chun into your brain?
I think a lot of it is struggling with are Monks even A Thing™ since I can find barely anything about them in Greyhawk that isn't the Scarlet Brotherhood or worshipers of specific gods haha. And then, if I do square that, why is he now an adventurer, yknow? I am aware I'm massively overthinking this haha
You have an excellent point. The real answer is, Gary Gygax and his friends really enjoyed kung fu movies and wanted to include martial arts even though it didn't entirely fit the genre well, and the thematics were a lot more secondary at the time. Everything since then is just an attempt to square a circle, as it were.
gotta be an occidental monk
I mean, the whole reason martial arts of any sort develop in a country is often due to folks, often the poorer folks, not having the money for (or not legally being allowed to own) actual weapons.
I definitely wouldn't lean on any of Gygax's interpretations/iterations of kung fu movies.
I was planning to make my character from Highfolk or the Vesve forest since that's where the VDDW mods are gonna be based, which seems like it's a fairly nice and comfortable area.. it might just be that monk doesn't fit with a character being from there
I dunno; comfy folks have a lot of free time. Maybe your character learned from someone who wasn't from that area to begin with.
Or they developed their own style of monk fighting because their siblings would constantly beat them up? Or perhaps a relative taught them because THEY had siblings or met someone.
I think its fair to say the sky is the limits in terms of creativity; just have fun and enjoy it! 😄
You have a lot of freedom to describe monk strikes in D&D, the mechanics are generally not very specific!
There's the UK5 module Monk, but everyone keeps telling me it's not in Greyhawk even though I could swear the terrain matches the ranges adjacent to Hellfurnaces, right above UK2-3, and I (we?) also know it's supposed to be there, as all of the other UK modules are right there in that same region in or adjunct to the Hold of the Sea Princes (likely because Suel, Flan, and Baklunish Monks come from the primary sources of magic in surrounding regions, the Yatil Mountains, Barrier Peaks, and the Sea of Dust or what is left of it)
In any case, that UK5 Monk could be either Baklunish, Suel, or Flan -- not saying there's not Oeridian Monks -- but those would likely be in other areas of Oerik
All Monks appear to be able to be trained on the "18 Arms of Wushu", which sure, come from not just the films that Gygax and others watched, but from real-world history. Unfortunately, there isn't a mapping between the non-Mongol China-rooted cultural or ethnographic historical parallels and what is available in Greyhawk, so instead of washing the culture it is likely best to integrate the weapons to the closest-cultural tie or remove the weapons individually or entirely. I'm not sure how this was handled in the Living Greyhawk era, but I am curious
My recommendation is to keep the basics of Monks: they worship, train, and educate from hill-mountain oriented monasteries -- and then drop most or all of the 18 Arms and Shaolin trappings. There is also plenty of unforced allegory to support that Rumi-sourced Sufi mystics are related to D&D Monks and can pull indirect and polite parallels from Sufism -- in particular, Greyhawk's Tusmit. The Yatil monuments reflect the tradition of Sufi lodges and religious retreats in the mountainous regions of Iran and Central Asia, where spiritual leaders (pirs, sheikhs, or muftis) held sway over both religious and, at times, political matters
In particular, many D&D sources (TSR, WotC, Hasbro eras) reveal the presence of a Grand Mufti as a clerical authority: mirroring the Ottoman religious hierarchy, where the Shaykh al-Islam (Grand Mufti) was the highest religious official
Flan knights and the Old Kerk (Perrenland's version of the Old Faith), I found to be sustainable as another lead-in for the Monk
An example of a Flan Knight that roamed the parallel from Perrenland and the Vesve down into Barrier Peaks is Quaal. The sources show him as a ranger, but there's no reason why he wouldn't or couldn't be a Ranger-Monk multiclass given the direction D&D has taken over the years with multiclassing
Worth noting, RE: Monks, the little deities blurbs we got include a line on Rao the Mediator about "...Peace must be enforced and they don't shy away from using fists and brains to ensure it" (emphasis mine)
Implying that it must be their fists and not other parts of their body?
I mean to me its a choice of words that implies monks are about!
Helen Cook's PC from The Rogue's Gallery was named Luther (a monk) who worshipped Rao and used a spear +1
In Shaolin training, the Traveling Dragon Spear is the ultimate test for any sword fighter. It's a weapon used by a master to train his or her students
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_of_the_Five_Immortals_(Guangzhou) -- the Temple of the Five Immortals do represent some of the Flan deities well, in particular Rao, Pelor, Obad-hai, Beory, and Lydia
Allitur is also somehow perhaps related to the monk vibes I'm getting from Flan deities
Honestly the vibe I get is that there is plenty of space to carve your own little niche
Want to be from a small sect of Heironius monks? why not?
I'm planning a paladin that follows what amounts to a cult of Hextor redeemed. There isn't so much "official" lore in 576 that you can't make some stuff up that makes sense, especially if you keep it on a scale where its really unlikley to conflict.
I definitely agree, Sledge
I like to think of LoG as a re-envisioning of Greyhawk. It will have a lot of similar details, yet also a lot of new things too. As such we should not get to hung up on the old school lore.
Only thing to get caught up in is well, the fun of a new adventure!
There's pirate monks, scholar monks, fighter monks, peaceful monks, navigator or science-oriented monks, religious monks. It's a pretty varied class
I noticed that the Castles & Crusades rendition of Greyhawk, the World of Aihrde, also makes monks prominent. The Trail Guide to Aihrde is written by a monk named Maximillian Vincent who runs into a character suspiciously-named Eustace the Monk
My personal fave is this real-world monk. He's hilarious -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guiot_of_Provins
Maybe a giant head from wild space and their autognome side kick taught them mighty morphin Kung fu.
Man these kung fu options are amazing! 😆
it comes down, you can come up with a bunch of ways on being a monk without a monastery.
like Monk the tv show?
Sure, if you want to play the detective angle. And don't hit people because you don't wanna catch their germs.
DM "Do you want to attack the filthy mud coated Bugbear?" Monk player, "I would like to use my tavern brawler feat to use an improvised weapon to shove them away. In particular, a towel whip to their ass while shouting, BACK! BACK!"
hahaha World of Germhawk
There's absolutely monks in Greyhawk, established in lore.
There's actually two deities who specifically sponsor monks.
Xae Yae and Zuoken.
Like, Zuoken has "monks" as basically the first thing in his portfolio. ... then physical and mental mastery.
And that's not even going into the Gygax home game with the character the "Monk With No Name".
The Suloise language has a word for monk.
Syrul's avatar has monk levels. As do Rillifane Ralathil (even deity of nature/woodlands) and Keoghtom, and a couple/few others I think.
Hextorian monk is a thing in lore.
And all the way back in 1999, the adventure "The Setting Sun" mentions a piece of literature called "The Musings of a Flan Monk".
...
So, lots of monks.
Just a few thoughts, @errant iron, @rancid sage, @somber reef, @fluid tusk , since y'all were talking about it earlier, and I missed it. Hope these examples help! 😊 🫂 👍
PS, I think GH monks are cool. 😅 ... if it doesn't show. 😅
I think Gygax appropriating other cultures from stuff he saw in movies is cringe, if I'm being honest. So the less folks draw from his bad adaptations the better.
Just because Gygax didn’t do it well, doesn't mean that we can't tell great stories with elven martial artists, or Hextorian combat masters, or native hand-to-hand fighters.
...
Plus, I don't think we need to veer toward shaming players who want to play a class in LoG for choosing it.
Ramping up a dwarven Monk from Dumadan, bcz lore sure supports it.
No one's saying anything about elven martial artists. I'm talking about the bad attempts at Asian cultures.
Look, there's a reason Wizards decided to rename Kaladesh to Avishkar.
We are all products of our time, Gygax included. While it is cringe to us now, it wasn’t back then. Does it make it right? No, but then we also live in a world where we can access almost all human knowledge at the press of a button.
Let’s just build this community up better than the one before it, hoping those that come after make it even better still.
If it's cringe to you now, consider not using it now.
No one's saying not to play a monk. Just examine what sources you're using to build their backstory, and whether or not those sources are outdated now and should probably be left in the past.
Also I don't give Gygax a pass for being "a product of his time," considering he was still saying some heinous stuff in the 2000s, well past when it would've been "of the time."
I appropriate from movies, tv, and cartoons all the time. And anime. And games. But that's the nature of the nerd living their nerdcore fantasy.
I have also have seen 15 barbarian orphans looking for the man with two snakes (bicep flex), 17 dark elf rangers with duel wielding scimitars that are exiled from their households, way too may Spaghetti Western Clint Eastwood types, and at least a Jason Momoa once a month.
We aim to avoid misrepresenting or diluting cultural/racial identities and instead honor and accurately reflect diverse cultures and backgrounds. We want to ensure authentic cultural representation. We want to uphold genuine inclusivity
In LoG and in D&D going forward (for some of us, it's always been the best would could make of this), the best way to found that path is to avoid the bad tropes by focusing on and promoting the good ones. Sufi-like, Taoist-like, or Buddhist-like mystics -- mysticism in general -- is warranted to be instilled into the tableplay (this only works when not as a direct parallel), as are the scholarly pursuits: a mixing of nobility, educators, and kinspeople. If it promotes equality, then that's the start we all need
It's ok -- perhaps even better -- to have a fantastical religion that has nothing to do with any real-world religion. It's ok to come up with fighting styles uniquely-D&D when they don't walk all over sensibilities. That's why my fave monk subclass is the Warrior of the Elements: it has all of feels without tromping via misrepresentation of real-world cultures because some pre-century massmedia-provided onesidedness or shortsightedness evoked wrong or insensitive imagery or terminology. It's ok to be careful and cautious, using mechanics like the X-card to promote good manners and sensitivity at the gaming table
It's always going to be a combination of these things. You will learn as you play -- especially at friendly-local gaming stores or gaming conventions -- that making friends through kindness means being open to their ideas, and providing a safe place for everyone to come to the table. It means being open to vulnerability: your own and for and with others
Right...so about that Elder Elemental Eye...
Why "Eye"???
What about Tharizdun affords it that moniker? Like...is it elemental Sauron? Nothing in my (albeit super brief) reading describes anything physically similar to an "eye". 😄
Thoughts/Opinions/Epiphanies? Please and thank you!

This might be wrong, or I’m misremembering something I read once, but I recall a description of lore around the elemental evil and the eye. It was described as a void of swirling chaos, yet despite the formless swirling mass, it felt like something was staring out from the center. A presence older than the gods. Thus it just became known as the elder elemental eye.
I have zero clue how accurate that is lore wise but it’s stuck with me and was my interpretation of the name. Take it or leave it lol
go for the eye, Boo. Go for the eye.
So, @fathom rune ...
The phrase "Elder Elemental Evil" was first coined in Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil (2001)...or at least first vaulted into populat awareness.
It hasn't been used in all too many sources, but it's a little more common today.
The cult has used a ***symbol ***of a golden flaming eye, though they have had others.
But, while some worshippers called it "Elemental Evil", the "Elder Elemental Eye" was essentially just a cover for Tharizdun ,though the two manifest differently and give different divine domains to clerics.
But the people calling it the "Eye" don't know that it's Tharizdun.
So, to answer your question a little more directly ... that's just the imagery or phrasing the cult (or more precisely Tharizdun) chose to sell the cult to mortals, and hide the evil presence.
There's a some depictions which are more Tharizdun-themed, and it's an ugly tentacled thing, sometimes made into a swirl symbol or something similar, but, ultimately we (as the audience) know that the "eye" really isn't a thing.
But, IC ... there's not really a description of why the eye is an eye ... the NPCs call it an eye, one of the symbols is an eye. But there's nothing really saying why that is, or having an avatar that is, or anything.
The "eye" is on the cover of T1.
@bright summit ...that' would depend, I s'pose, upon which printing of The Village of Hommlet (publisher code T1) that one has.
There are at least three I'm aware of, and not all have the charging cultists with the umber hulk art by David A. Trampier. Some have art by Jeff Dee.
... but, yes. That's the the "golden flaming eye" symbol I was referring to above.
Oh, just pointing out the original referenced it on the first orange cover and in the adventure text in 1979. I'm no expert but I'd assume that was the direction they were going for...or expanded from just a flaming eye for fire to all elementals later.
It's funny to me ...
Sometimes artists just put things because it "feels right" kinda thing (as a published artist, personally).
And it's neat that sometimes, authors or content creators will take an element, and develop it into a whole thing, inspired by one little part in an artwork.
That's probably one of the coolest creative inspirations I ever see.
So, my son and I are looking to do at least one LoG event at GenCon this year. Is there a document like that ALPG that covers character creation and restriction and whatnot? The only thing I've been able to find on my own was posted back in January basically announcing the preview at MagicCon in Chicago.
That is all we have right now. Still waiting for final rules.
i believe there are some messages in this channel abour character creation, but it's mostly "2024 PHB for everything"
That is currently the only character creation rules we have since, as mentioned above, we are still awaiting official rules.
You are weclome to ask question about it here, or on the BMG discord. I've done the preview events, as have others, and are more than happy to help out. 🙂
I can further add that even though Beyond is recommended and it is primarily PH 2024, I have asked the question on DDB and have been assured that where DDB disagrees with 2024 RAW, you do use the RAW instead, which is to say... don't just blindly trust DDB.
You are also welcome to use a paper character sheet if that is your prefrence. The DMs at GenCon won't be upset. You are also welcome to use a pregen, which will be available at GenCon too.
Excellent. Thank you.
PHB 2024 only, Standard Array or Point Cost, fixed Hit Points. Easy peasy, and you'll be LoGing before you know it. :)
Oh god, Vid. You are gonna be calling everyone LoGers like Sledge at this rate! 🦫
Look I can go back to Lumberjacks
and no evil alignments. No blood sacrifices to Hextor.
No evil alignment is kinda already built in the text of the PHB.
is it really? Huh. That's a new one. (Puts on his glasses.) "D&D assumes that player characters aren’t of an evil alignment. Check with your DM before making an evil character." Neat. That's a detail I missed about the new 2024. Default no evil alignment.
I'm trying to join a campaign and there are a few but it won't let me post there. What am I supposed to do???
which campaign are you trying to join?
The only LoG campaigns are currently at conventions (including VDDW), so you may be in the wrong channel.
No the channel where dms post for looking for players
yes, you may need one of those channels. This channel is for Legends of Greyhawk organized play
That is just about the most amazing thing I've ever read!
Good on them!
Hello everybody, sorry for bothering, I know that LoG will be played at conventions but, as I'm based in Italy, will there be PDFs or something else to play the same games? I haven't happened to find materials about this topic. Thank you
Theres been nothing specific, but they've said adventures will premiere at conventions for a set period and then be released for anyone to play.
Pretty much what Calvin said! Right now, the best guess is content will be available for comic shops and home play in Q1 of 2026, maybe Q4 2025. Nothing is set in stone so it's all just guesses and speculation. We only know that eventually they will be for everyone.
Online conventions are also going to be a thing (and already are with BMGs VDDW)
Modules will also be released. Currently expected to start Q1 2026.
@dry belfry what LoG subscription fee are you referring to?
Which comment are you referring to? Lol
It was posted to #al-admin-questions but I figured this was the better place to discuss
Post is here if someone is reading this in the future... #al-admin-questions message << a direct link.
Not sure what fee they are referring too either unless they mean DDB sub, which isn’t required - just need an account.
I’m also not sure exactly what “centralized online tracking for LoG characters” they are referring to either. BMG has pretty up front that simple is better and while physical certs will be a thing, you’re welcome to play with pen and paper and just use a book. You are not (as far as I’ve seen or am aware) required to use DDB. It has been mentioned in the past that there maybe perks for using DDB, but again, nothings been announced that I’m aware of.
I am curious to know where they are getting this info myself
It was announced on the VDDW server about logging through discord (and then available elsewhere in the future)
Interesting. It would be nice to hear see this information more publicly stated.
For some additional context for those not in the VDDW server, the folks at BMG are in the process of rolling out a logging option. Currently very early days. Its been stated as a WIP and they stated
Looking at and editing your logs will not remain locked to discord commands forever, but we had to start somewhere.
I believe the primary driver of their implementation was the need for accurate tracking for the cert for the Battle Of Emridy Meadow reward.
Nobody has said its mandatory for all of LoG.
They have also clarified for those concerned, that it is A logging tool not the required logging tool
FWIW I love having an online tool for logging, I will use it wholeheartedly, I will also keep a spreadsheet and a paper log.
Thanks for the info, Sledge.
There is no fee. It was a worry of mine that they want a subfee because keeping up those servers etc. For logging costs money. You think they gift you stuff for free? Its a business not a charity.
I'm aware there is no fee. You said in response to a lengthy post
Only part missing is that they make you pay a subscription fee 👎 not gonna touch ghat with a 100 feet pole
which is very likely to confuse people who think you are speaking factually.
I have to ask. What is a log campaign?
Check out #1365008455282331668 message
Basically it's an official organized D&D campaign designed for conventions
It is set in Greyhawk and it focused on just the 2024 rules, not the older 2014 rules.
This channel is for an organized play campaign called Legends of Greyhawk.
The only real way to find a game of Legends of Greyhawk these days is to attend an in person convention that is running Legends of Greyhawk games or to attend one of the Virtual D&D Weekends. The Events section in this Discord lists a few of the upcoming events that may contain LoG games.
The place to look for games on this server is by using the looking for games functionality. See #find-a-game to find out how to do that.
Alright! Thanks : D
I see that there are multi-table events at GenCon also. How do those work exactly? I've never been a part of those.
Multi table specials are awesome. Think 10-35 tables of players all working together for a common goal. Best thing about conventions - you can't get that nearly anywhere else. But I'm a little biased. 😉
Generally lots of tables working toward the same goal. Take Emridy Meadows for an example -- thats an historic battle where many heroes fought and died. Lots of tables of heroes trying to accomplish their goals. With the ultimate goal being far larger than any group of 4-6 heroes could accomplish on their own.
Mechanically table A might impact table B through their actions, and the results from all tables contribute to the overall success or failure
Agreed, the one thing you really cannot recreate at home is 35 tables working toward a common goal and the roar of the collected players when they win!
Is winning an option?
Did they have fun? Then they won D&D....
You still play at your regular 5-6 person table and one DM, but the actions at your table can have an effect on the other tables. That usually boils down to a "that table accomplished X task, that stops Y effect for all tables, or that opens up Z route/sidequest for another table" sort of things. It could also mean big enemies with a lot of HP that go from table to table, doing damage and taking hits until its HP is whittled down low enough for a final blow. Those sorts of happenings are announced to the whole room.
Multi-table adventures tend to be a little bit more time-conscious and goal-oriented than a regular adventure where things can happen at the table's pace.
What is log?
It's a new organized play program for Greyhawk adventures, to be run at conventions (and elsewhere later--BMG is running them at virtual weekends now too)
Ty vm
Gotta be real tho, I still don't understand some big things
It's a campaign across multiple conventions? Are they connected?
That's the idea with organized play--you can take your character to anywhere with the same rules
Different organizers are writing adventures in different parts of the world
Hmm. That's very interesting!!
So is it like in order, or are they all roughly happening at the same time?
In universe
There is a prequel adventure where you bring a different character, and then a time skip to the "present"
It's different stories in different areas of the campaign world. Those in each area will likely be tied together, some more closely than others. But all happening in the same world at the same general time.
A good way to think of it like this: the world of Greyhawk where the campaign is a continent (this is the map in the 2024 DMG. The year is 576 (if I remember right) and there are different regions (countries) where adventures take place.
Baldman Games (BMG) is one of several team/groups writing up stories and have picked 3 regions to write for. Other groups will pick different regions. Each creates their own story line and adventures, with WotC helping to keep some of the continuity between them.
Your character starts at level 1 and you can play in any region or storyline you like, though most everything will first release at conventions starting at GenCon.
After a while, we assume GenCon 2026, the Greyhawk yeah will also move forward, thus adventures do typically take place at the same time.
It is recommended you have multiple characters if you want to fully experience multiple regions without leveling out, or declining levels.
All in all, it’s still new since GenCon hasn’t happened yet. This also means is the perfect time to jump in if you are interested @sharp lotus
This appeals to me a lot as a World of IO fan, lol
I wouldn't say that they're all taking place at the same time. Like, many multiples of tables are all going to play the same adventure at different cons at different times. The adventure will be the same experience for all of them. But they're connected storylines.
I’ve never played dungeons and dragons before, may I learn how to play
Like, I would say West Marches games are more of the "taking place at the same time" situation. Like, if Bob's table last week killed the evil warlock, then tables this week aren't going to be able to fight the evil warlock.
Organized play, however, in both LoG and AL, if you play the "The Death of Evil Warlock" adventure, every table's going to have a shot at killing the evil warlock.
That's probably a more accurate explination of "at the same time" for sure. Mine is more of "yes, these adventures across regions are all happening in the same world and around the same time" 🙂
Still, now is the best time to jump into LoG if you are interested! It's official starting date is at GenCon, and while it is convention focused, you can always play them at the Virtual D&D Weekends which are hosted by BMG.
What Komori said! But if you are going to a convention, either SDCC this weekend, or GenCon next weekend, there are many Learn to Play (LtP) sessions available; sign up and have fun!
So it begins!
Today is the start of San Diego Comic Con were the first preview adventures for Legends of Greyhawk games are run by West Coast Adventurer's League ( I think it is the first time LoG is run by any other than Baldman Games )
Never thought of that. Crazy
Hello, are there any organizers in the UK that are getting a region or offering to run?
We've heard some rumblings that the UK AL POs are possibly also UK LoG POs but nothing has been formally announced
While waiting for the Premiere Organizers to also running Legends of Greyhawk, any organizer can now apply to run some ready-made adventures:
( from https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/2024-legends-of-greyhawk-coming-to-a-con-near-you )
Looking to Get Organized?
Legends of Greyhawk is currently in a beta at conventions only. If you’re an organizer and would like to get Legends of Greyhawk adventures at your convention, head to the D&D customer service portal
What options should convention organisers choose in the support form? Assuming it's still 'D&D Adventurers League Event Submissions' the items in the Support Requested drop-down only refer to AL-specific requests for Epics and Trading Posts. (Not that I'm organising anything at the moment but I wanted to see what the form looked like).
I would assume so? Perhaps, @low bluff would know?
I'd guess. Don't know for sure (never had to use it lol)
I get things direct and in bulk lol.
Yes, I imagine it's something for WotC people to look at, at some point. There's no way at the moment to select anything that says 'Legends of Greyhawk' and you have to select from a list of AL things that don't apply. There's a separate 'AL General Questions' form, but I don't imagine that would be routed to the right people.
Since the AL Admin are also LoG Admin, picking AL will probably get to the right people.
Yes, but which of 'Charity Event Support', 'Epic - Seasonal Campaign', 'Epic - Alternate Campaign', 'Epic - DRW (Masters Campaign)', or 'Fai Chen/Trading Post' isn't going to confuse whoever reads the form?
Is LoG released for general con use already?
The launch is next week at Gen Con so your probably good to submit requests now. I wouldn't expect a response until after the 4th of August at the earliest.
There's some info about requesting LoG adventures in the campaign announcement post, and at the end of the FAQ in the LoG Guide: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/2024-legends-of-greyhawk-coming-to-a-con-near-you - the Guide says to request at least 60 days in advance.
The current form will be updated (eventually) as Organized Play with options for LoG and DDAL. For now you can explain in the note/email that you want to have LoG adventures.
I just sent you one. 🙏
And I just sat down at my desktop so ...
Exciting times, I bet you got a bunch of requests
yep, and I need to go to physical therapy soon, so some will need to wait till tonight.
so do I have to make a LOG character in D&D Beyond? I already purchased physical books.
You do not have to
However the certs only go out to verified characters on ddb
But you can do a lot with the free ddb
Is it for verified characters, or a verified DDB account?
Let me find the exact wording you don’t want to rely on my memory 🙂
Physical representations of rewards are only available to players with verified D&D Beyond accounts, so having a D&D Beyond account may get you a nice memento of your play! In addition, most magic item cards are tradable with other players who also possess a physical card
Okay, so it sounds like as long as you have an account (which is free to register for), you don't need to have your specific character created in DDB or have to futz with the homebrew tools (for any non-Basic Rules content).
Yes that’s how I would read that. But we’ve also heard multiple times that “there are advantages” to using DnD beyond so I’d not be surprised if the perks didn’t stop there
I also suspect (and this is just context clues and some hopium) that eventually these QR codes are going to unlock the item in your actual character
Sure, but you can also just type the content into your character. Right now the main benefit is getting the physical card, and you can get that with an account.
so how does that work? Because both the wifi and cellular data are.. bad on the gaming floor at my local con. So I get a card and somehow scan the QR code into the computer where I have D&D Beyond pulled up? I don't own a tablet and my laptop doesn't have a scanner. Do I have to pull up D&D Beyond on my phone?
For right now you just get a physical card with a QR code. You don’t need to do anything
I think you can expect to have to verify you have a beyond account, whether that’s pulling it up at the con or printing your character out from beyond I don’t know.
I hope the LOG DM's are prepared for a lot of Criminal Wizards as that this the only background/ caster class that synergizes well from the basic rules in D&D Beyond
Yeah im sure they are understanding that lots of folks grabbed physical books not digital ones
If you have a D&D Beyond account, you'll be able to pick up physical cards to represent Magic Items you gain during adventures. If you don't, you'll still receive those items, but with no card. You can trade Magic Items with other players only if you have the physical card.
The only QR codes I'm aware of at this time are ones that will direct you to make an account if you don't have one. Anything about QR codes unlocking items on your account is just a guess at this time.
You don't need to have your character on DDB to play or to earn the physical card. You just need an account. You can bring a character made with a physical book using physical paper, so that you're not just restricted to criminal wizards.
Agreed as far as we know just having an account is all you need for the card. Speculation about future possibilities is just speculation
I'd be interested to see. If they apply unique codes to each card, it'd make trading become complicated real quick.
That would kinda end up duplicating the item
Keep the unique digital version, trade away the physical card
And if codes aren't unique, they'd get posted online within minutes.
Honestly if they just led to the custom item. If its a +1 Warhammer that gives you +2 to Stealth checks it would be super cool if that item "unlocked" when you scanned the card something like that
@icy girder ... I'm sure we're not the first ones to think about the codes like that.
That's been a thing in most every other platform that codes get shared.
They've hinted that they'd "like to" do something where the items are on DDB ... but, I'm sure kinda like there not being a direct PDF of the PH, DMG, and MM to reduce piracy, they likely wouldn't make it just an "enter a code" kinda thing.
They'd likely make it so that you don't get a code, but there would be an access page or whatever, and it'd be a unique item on the site. ... and if it were traded, it'd be like trading tickets or passes on other Con sites where it has to be released from the owner, and purposefully transferred to the recipient.
I'm sure it wouldn't be super-duper easy, but similar technology already exists, so if they do, I'm sure they'll cover their own bases.
That's all well and good, but for now the QR codes are literally just URLs that point you to DDB account creation, so it's still all just hopes and speculation. :)
Yeppers.
It is. As has been already said, "Speculation about future possibilities is just speculation."
We're just fans talking about what might be.
Just like if we were talking about how Marian and Bertha might have some fight which will make Bertha no longer want her dating Larry (perhaps going against Bertha in her plans to marry Gladys to the Duke). (The Gilded Age)
SOON
Hello everyone
Hi! Welcome
Thanks for the welcome.....
So far the data reception has been very good at the WotC wing of Lucas Oil
Hey there!
Going to Dragoncon not GenCon
DragonCon isn't running LoG afaik, but they are running AL. There's no requirement to use DDBeyond for AL, and there isn't a benefit for doing so, either.
Mark seemed to think they were going to run LoG and AL, but the campaign slots haven't dropped yet. I was going to join LoG because he thought that's all they be running next year.
Oh, then that's news to me. And kind of a shame. I was taking a year off from running D&D at Dragon Con, but if they're only doing LoG in 2026 then I guess that's it for me then.
I think they expect to have some CORE adventures, Emridy Meadows and then Last Orders and some DC content.
Some of it is the timing of the Cons and when their applications for LoG could be submitted. Some of the more recent Cons to apply for it are going to be running it, including our next one at UtF as the timing is finally right.
From what I'm reading, LoG is also being hosted in Virtual D&D Weekends. I've never played in any type of organized play. How do I join LoG and what do I need to know to play? I have the LoG guide and latest AL guide
First, always remember AL and LoG are both Organized Play but are completely separate. I.e., make sure to use the appropriate guide and try not to assume they allow the same or function the same and realize no crossover of characters, trading, whatever.
With that in mind, Organized Play is still just D&D. It is just D&D with restrictions placed on both DMs and Players to help make drop in style games feasible as well as with pre written stories, i.e., no off the cuff stuff or self made stuff that does not follow rules.
But as I said, basically just D&D played with RAW being the default unless the OPs rules make an exception.
As to what you need, build a first level character using the guidelines in the LoG Guide, sign up for a game, and enjoy. (If you do end up doing in person,I would also recommend dice.)
and snacks!
The August VDDW sign up will be available on next Tuesday, ticket link here:
Duly noted on the snacks! Thanks for the info and the link. So do I buy a badge to sign up for the games once they're available? I assume the general badge?
basically you buy the general badge for admission (after August Scry Ahead?) And then when tickets are ava for games, you pick the games and purchase the tickets for those games.
the Mark tickets are for something else I assume?
You earn marks by playing or DMing, which can be redeemed in future months for a free badge
Might want to check out Scry Ahead tomorrow for free badges:
Automod ate my links, recommend joining the BMG discord and also watching tomorrow's Scry Ahead stream
5 PM PT / 8 PM ET
Definitely! Planning on watching it. Thanks for the help everyone
You can get their discord link near the bottom of the page here https://www.baldmangames.com/virtual-dd-weekends/
there's always D&D 5e one-shots in non-campaign. Plus it probably depends on how LoG goes this year.
Oh sure. That's just a different department, is all
Yes, we are running LoG. 🙂
The list of what I'm running is on the GM survey, it is here
Short answer AL, Dungeoncraft, LoG (Nulb, Hommlet, and Emridy), a Special LoG from Thomas Valley, and Daggerheart (because I wanted to) 🙂
I'll look forward to seeing you. 👍
See you there!
Hello everyone!
Just back from GenCon. Enjoyed the LoG adventures.. I played Hommlet, Shadows/Free City, Sword/Shadows, Emridy, and Crown Conspiracy. Good time was had by all. Thanks to @low bluff and everyone at BMG. 👍🏼
Hey!
Hope you’re doing well today?
How was the new storyline from the Domain of Greyhawk. Shadows in the Free city, that is the first one - isn't it?
Yes, it was written well and a fun tier 1 module.
Really good!
The epic Specials were fun.
Hello everybuddy
Hello and welcome!
Hey!
Hello
Is anyone here?
Maybe?
Yes, but like, just repeatedly saying ‘hello’ does not incentivize conversation and has nothing to do with LoG, not that anyone wants to be mean.
Yep. We're here, just rolling dice (or working, I GUESS)
What is work when there is D&D, @icy girder ? lol Granted we are just coming off GenCon...
But yes, as mentioned, we are here! Have you played any LoG as of yet?
Can someone help explain to me what the deal is with legends of greyhawk a little bit more?
Mu current understanding: its a convention specific campaign, you can keep your reward items and transfer them between sessions, and the results of the adventures will impact the future of greyhawk? Does each convention get their own specific adventures to run? Is there a website or anything to tell us which upcoming cons will be running the campaign? I know they will all be organized by baldman games, westcoast adventurers league, and Game conclave with more being added later in the year.
I'd really like to participate but from where im at in life conventions take planning, they can be pricey and require taking some time off so id really like to know when these events would be
LoG is focused on convention play, but adventures will be released for others to buy in the future (likely starting 1Q 2026).
Additionally, other conventions can apply to get access to the adventures, so it isn't limited to conventions run by those writing the adventures.
Adding to what JT mentioned, there are also multi table specials that can decide the direction of the campaign as a whole. GenCon just did the crown of conspiracy and the results of that will determine who is on the council in Greyhawk.
While there is no official website (yet - I believe it’s in the works), @normal phoenix has a link to a website he manages with currently known adventures and several cons they can be played at.
Thanks for the plug! Link in my bio
@chrome moat also runs a Legends of Greyhawk wiki page that covers lots of lore (mostly lore from living Greyhawk) which is slowly being filled in with Legends of Greyhawk lore as it is revealed.
To more directly answer each question:
Rewards are specific to the character that completed the adventure. No sharing between your own characters and you cannot do the same adventure twice.
Each Con can request to host LoG content though specific Premiere Organizer (PO) will be at their usual cons. Those you mentioned are the biggest atm.
Website, check out the link in Sledges bio.
Yes, results based on groups of player actions at cons for the Specials will have a direct effect on the long term story.
🤔
Well, the Great Library of Greyhawk wiki is primarily a wiki based on official sourcebooks from the IP holder over the years.
Regardless of era, it can go in the GLoG wiki.
It’s a “canon” wiki first, and updates lore from all sourcebooks.
It also happens to additionally have some small amount of Living Greyhawk and is actively working toward including Legends of Greyhawk lore content as we learn it.
wow thank you guys so much, very big help! :D
one more thing, ()im new to al as a whole) ive heard you can rebuild characters as you lkevel up, i dont know how true this is?
for example if you took a specific feat or spell you could respec later?
on the "not doing an adventure twice", is that per character or for the player? I assume is the former, otherwise it would be pretty limiting
Per character.
You can rebuild when you level up. Take a moment to read the Player's Guide here!: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/marketing/Legends_of_Greyhawk_Guide_v0.5_July_2025.pdf
Notably, Legends of Greyhawk is not related to AL in any way. Totally separate campaign.
No crossover of characters, inventory, adventures, or anything.
ok good note, im back with more questions sry -_-''
I think i wanna join some of ther events for baldman games virtual weekend.
They are running Battle of emridy meadows, Darkness in nulb, and a village called hommlet
the later two are made for level 1-4 adventurers, buyt emridy meadows is meant for 7th level characters
i know the rules say all charactersstart at level one, so I cant make a seventh level character for emridy meadows correct?
meaning I am unable to qualify for the event? Alternativly would i be ALLOWED to go in with a charcter of a much lower level? (not that i would, it would screw over the other paarty members and result in my characters death I reckon)
I believe for Emridy they will also provide pre-gen characters
ohh so i COULD get a ticket! interesting!
You can either use a pregen or make a 7th level character according to certain rules.
The adventure is a prequel to the main series. You are encouraged to have your "main" character be a relative or friend of your Emridy Meadows character.
far out!
Yep!
The “correct” order (note the giant air quotes) is
- emridy
- hommlet
- nulb
- moathouse
Then in September/ October The Domain of Greyhawk content with either the same character or a different one:
- shadows over the freed city
- sword in the shadows
- murder among thieves
- crown conspiracy
come down to Greyhawk. See ol' Hommlet. Eat the chowder. See the Battle of Emridy Meadows memorabilia. You might see some memorabilia of your character from the Battle of Emridy Meadows hanging on the tavern's wall.
unfortunately for VDDW, Moathouse is only available with Dragonmarks or Red Carpet event. RIP
but watch out for dem folk from Nulb. They're mired in darkness.
Do note that any character(s) used for Emridy are used for that alone and you cannot use that character again for any other LoG games.
the character from Emridy could very well be your pappy or ma.
Moathouse is fun but it’s not required for the narrative
it could really be anyone. It's only 7 years before hte others.
It’s only 7 years
or 6ft under. It was a bloody battle as I understand
it's still a good background hook for future chars.
im kind of confused what the different levels of badges are used for... if its a virtual event, i may be stupid but im imagining like walking around the con like your scrolling google earth
really? I was worrying about that.
crown conspiracy is the next exclusive?
the badges are only to provide different ways to buy tickets and some early access to signups. Red Carpet is slightly different as it involves buying a 3+ group of adventures as whole tables.
Crown is the next multi table special. Murder among thieves is the next track exclusive
Emridy = crown
Moathouse = murder
a regular badge is fine at this point as early access is effectively over for this month.
okkk very cool. thank you guys for being so patient with my questions
We enjoy being useful
is murder needed for the narrative? I'm trying to gameplan which character to use (ditzy Ranger or quack Warlock)
gonna need to save up those dragonmarks or mullah for the Red Carpet for Murder.
I think murder provides some nice context
But it’s not needed
It was really good though
I wish there were more cons outside of LA on the WEST coast -_-' but maybe this will inspire me to finally visit the east coast.
interesting planning events. The way yall are talking, will baldman games do every adventure in the campaign virtually?
i know the websiote linked earlier shows that gameconclave is gonna run lordship of isles inorlando come september, but i dont see baldman making any more apearences
ive also never played anythign greyhawk so i dont know connected everything is
just noticed that the two track exclusives (so far) are a "nice to have but not required" for the region narrative. If that's the case, then I might skip them for now
Keep in mind that BMG is only one of the premiere organizers
But we certainly hope the others deliver online content similarly
nice. and how important is it to have backup characters ready do you guys think?
I think i wanna start with a rogue,maybe eventually he'll become a rogue wizard
If you want to play all the content you’re going to need multiples
After questcon Orlando there will be enough tier 1 mods to get you to 5th
My “Domain of Greyhawk” character played hommlet, shadows, sword, murder, and crown, and will be playing the highfolk series when it drops in November
My hommlet character will probably visit the lordship of isles this fall
ok interesting
so ill make 3-4 to start with.
Yeah it’s a bit tricky. On one hand BMG suggested you might not want to play hommlet trilogy and greyhawk triology on the same character if you want to see all the content without declining rewards
On the other hand if you just play a character per storyline you probably won’t be ready for tier two content when it drops
Agreed!
I can’t post screenshots but bmg suggested that different characters is a good idea if you want to be able to finish the storyline and collect rewards
I am guessing we will get more tier 1 hommlet content that it will be very possible to level out of
regarding the trilogies... generally, the first two modules stand just fine on their own, regardless of order, and the third frequently builds on things learned from the first two. It's part of why the "part 3" mods are generally only available as part of a set if you're at an in-person show, or as an exclusive thing online.
I think Moathouse and Murders are both very interesting! But they're definitely not required in any capacity.
Agreed there’s going to be a happy medium. If you played the hommlet trilogy, the DoG trilogy + special, and the highfolk trilogy, boom you’re 5th
But if all you play was hommlet, you won’t be ready for the Ferrond tier 2 content
Reminder: "Backup character"
Glad to see your questions are being answered @carmine mantle !
Overall, I don't have much to add other than to echo what everyone else has sad. If you play just the VDDWs a single character will be fine. I would personally recommend Emridy for the story elements that help set the stage as it were. Beyond that, you can play anything in any order. If you wanted to go in order based on the current timeline, it would be:
Emridy, Hommlet, Nulb, Moathouse, Shadows, Sword, Murder, Crown.
You are also welcome to join many of us on the BMG Discord too! We tend to talk a lot more there than here - but we do talk a lot too!
What’s up everyone
Working on some stuff for a LoG con. While sitting on the beach. You?
That’s good! But why’d you go to the beach today? i’m still in bed talking to you feels like a lazy day.
My in-laws do a beach trip every year it’s my post gencon wind down
Hopeful to find an “official answer” for the following question which is likely to come up next month at Quest Con.
When playing in your final tier one adventure (ie you’re 4th level and at the end of your current adventure you’ll be 5th) can you keep the featured item (or other uncommon + you roll at the end of the adventure even if you already have one because you are now tier two? Or do you have to be tier two at the start of the adventure to keep a second uncommon+ item.
Good question. I was looking at that Tiering last night.
it's a good question. I could see it either way. Leveling and items are both "at the conclusion" of an adventure. But treasure is listed before level in the PG.
AL used to let you level up before having to drop items for your Magic Item Limits. I don't know if LoG will follow the same.
I think either answer is fine. But I think it’d be good to have an answer
If you can keep it, I think there will be some amount of “pressure” to play specific tier one mods “last” which is kinda meta gamey but I mean let the metagamers metagame I guess
I believe the answer is yes, you can keep it, but let me check in with the other folks and make sure they agree.
It may take a few days to confirm, WOTC is on post-Gen Con summer break.
So that went much faster than expected! The answer is that it all happens at the end of an adventure so the player can decide the order; aka you can level then take the item if you want.
so it is written.. IN THE BOOK OF MARKS
so which character would y'all recommend for LOG: 1) a criminal, dwarf wizard 2)a human entertainer paladin or 3) a cloud goliath farmer cleric?
all of em work for LoG. For the goliath cleric, what deity you are thinking to follow?
Someone you will enjoy playing or just want to play?
I know, not the answer you probably wanted, but Customizing to the content tends to lead to players at the table that are either not as invested or stumble around more.
Also, that's one reason rebuild rules exist. You can pick something and if you goofed, fix it.
I was going to go light cleric so Pelor. Stronmaus is technically a sun god but really seems to focus on storms more.
Whichever you want to play is the one to choose.
Team Pelor!
too much bright light! it buuuurns
Pelor is a good choice for LoG
Living Greyhawk Gazeteer (which still got great ideas to mine for character ideas/concepts; pg. 179) and Complete Divine 3rd edition book (pg. 117) got decent information on Pelor and their clergy.
Sounds great. The only problem I have currently is cleric starting equipment doesn't let you get chain mail if you start as a protector. So I guess I just have to respect his dex and strength once I get heavy armor?
With 50 GP from background and 110 GP option from cleric, a chain mail at 75 GP should be affordable.
Basically you can remove 25 GP from your background and swap the chain shirt from Cleric starting gear to chain mail.
1500 gp for plate?
Yeah 1500 for plate, but still 🙂

How is everybody doing tonight? Excited for QuestCon and Lordship of Isles? Ready for exciting news about the Wild Coast? Perhaps planning their August VDDW games ?
Sooo...here's a question. My character wants to spend some of his hard-earned gold on books, because books are amazing. How are they being handled in LoG? Beyond seems to imply that you can just get a generic "arcana, history, nature, or religion" book, but that seems both awfully powerful and contrary to the text in the PHB. Would it be kosher, for instance, to pick up "Doctor Prosper's Guide to Dangerous Beasts of the Flanaess?" "A Brief History of Greyhawk and Its Environs?" How narrow/broad should the topic be?
I understand the question is how it is handled in LoG but might i ask what text it is contrary too?
Note here the book isn't about Arcana, History, Nature or Religion. The book is about a specific topic and all 4 of them have a bonus if it is relevant to that topic. Really not that OP.
"If you consult an accurate nonfiction book about its topic, you gain a +5 bonus to Intelligence (Arcana, History, Nature, or Religion) checks you make about that topic."
This at least strongly implies that:
- The topic of the book is not "Arcana, History, Nature, or Religion"
- The topic could cover more than one of those categories.
For example, "Dr. Prosper's Guide to Dangerous Beasts of the Flanaess" might cover undead, beasts, and magical creatures, and therefore, depending on the circumstances, give a bonus to Religion, Nature, or Arcana checks--but only when dealing with dangerous creatures.
I agree that as long as the book has a specific topic, it's not that OP. Being able to shell out 100 GP for generic books on the four skills and get a +5 bonus to all checks would be, I think, a bit much.
You keep saying all checks. The description is clear. It has to relate to the topic of the book.
Whether it is accurate nonfiction about the topic , is also highly DM 's call.
Again, I agree. Like I said, my concern was that Beyond simply categorizes books as "Arcana, History, Nature, or Religion."
Oh, Beyond issue, k,k.
No disagreement from me on how the text of the rules should be understood; I think you're absolutely correct.
One of the LoG people should be along shortly to give ya an answer.
Actually, I think I answered it myself--there's a customization option to allow you to assign a specific topic. That solves the problem and answers my question. (Though I'd still be curious how much latitude we have in coming up with book topics!)
I think that’s squarely in the we don’t have and can’t expect an official answer in the rules anywhere and will come down to what the table DMs call is
I don’t want to be spoiler-tastic in this channel but I can provide more information in the spoiler channel
Sounds like the sort of thing that boils down to how much effort you put in to selling it to the DM. 🙂
(and, secondarily, how far you are trying to push it)
So I don’t think you’d name the book unless you wanted too. You could buy it for 25g, and for example, notate that it is a book on arcana. You still be limited to selling price or half per the PHB. That said, there is nothing in the current rules saying you cannot buy 4 books, 1 for each subject.
Except I don’t think that’s how those books are meant to work
A Book contains fiction or nonfiction. If you consult an accurate nonfiction Book about its topic, you gain a +5 bonus to Intelligence (Arcana, History, Nature, or Religion) checks you make about that topic.
I read that as “I buy a book about Goblins of the Central Flaeness, when I consult that book about goblins I get a +5 bonus to all four of those checks”
How the books are meant to work and how they are worded in the PBH are certainly different.
While, from a DM perspective, I do not disagree with you, and I would easily provide something similar in my home games (get a book on something specific and get a +5 on it), for a new player looking at the PHB, I'd simply say "I buy 4 books, one on each 'general' topic of history, arcana, nature and religion"
And I'd consider that a valid argument at the table since the description is, imo, intentionally vague. I am guessing it is this way to help players feel like they can spend money on buying something and not be required to be descriptive unless they wish to be.
I honestly didnt realize there was anybody reading it as "you buy 4 books one for each of those 4 skills, and get +5 to that skill any time you use the book about any topic"
But I dont have a problem with "fundamentals of arcana" being a solid reference for all arcana checks either
From a DM perspective you have so many "outs" -- - No time to reference the book, - the book has to be accurate, in a home game I'd sort of treat it as "the more narrowly you define the topic of the book, the more likely it is to be accurate about rare into"
Yeah, it's certainly left up to interpretation, which I think is intended. Still, for what we currently have in LoG, I would not fault a player for wanting to buy 4 generalized books on those subjects to get the +5 to each. Might not be RAI but could fit a RAW vibe.
End of the day, it will be up to the DM and player at the table to discuss.
Yeah I think as long as everybody is being flexible and reasonable it should be fine
I read it as the book is on a specific topic, not on a whole broad skill "arcana". If the specific topic is relevant and one of the four skills is being used, you get a bonus. I don't read it as have a book on arcana and get a bonus on all arcana checks (as long as there is time to consult the book).
Yeah I would never have read it as just giving blanket +5 to arcana for a small gold cost, that's wild
keep in mind though it has to be accurate
Oh you want to research forgotten arcana lore that nobody has seen for 200 years? Sorry your "Primer of the Arcane" is not accurate for that
Totally. And that is where the nuance of it all comes in from the DM side. I've had plenty of games where I've told players, sorry this knowledge you are asking for is so obscure, outside of indepth research, you'll never know it.
Still, for arguments sake, in our own world we have books on "basics for X" that provide anyone with knowledge of a subject they didn't study or know much about. Why would there not be something similar in a D&D world? You have to start somewhere after all.
If a DM asks how someone got a 25+ on a knowledge check at level 1 or 2, and the player says I have a book that gives me +5, well then thats up to the DM to determine if the book would provide the benefit in the moment.
I think the "shock" for me is +5 is HUGE
I don't think, generally, that many players are going to buy said books, to try and get some random bit of knowledge they might otherwise have skipped.
I mean most of my tables, we work together. Sledge was our wizard and whenever he did an arcana check, we all gave him gudiance and the help action. We ended up joking that he'd call out the research team when the checks were needed.
The same held true for other skill checks.
This does seem rather high. I'd personally have capped it at +2 myself lol
honestly advantage!
I dont know why flat plus sneaks back in there
Lots of ways to add advantage. I'm sure that came up before they settled on the +
THOUGH I will say I do like the idea of it as a "if you have the right tools and sufficient time" checks are less likely to fail
one of my beefs about skills in D&D is that since you are rolling a d20, you really stink that things about 25% of the time
This convo made me reread the mundane gear.... yall I have been SLEEPING on some stuff
Totally. I prefer the mentality as a DM that if you have time to spare, you can just toss the room or discuss something to recall something.
Perfume!
Advantage on persuasion checks against indifferent humanoids?
Pole, advantage on high and long jumps
lol Sledge found a reason to have a bag of holding now
But none of that surprises me. Use the right tool for the job.
+5 bonus is basically better than expertise. That's ridiculous for a whole skill for just 25gp.
Yeah, rereading the PHB entry it really seems like it is intending it to be a +5 to a specific topic that spans one of the four knowledge checks and not just to the ability checks at large. That makes the +5 make more sense than just Advantage, too.
It absolutely is.
Outside the Arcana checks, the other Int checks are just for info. I've played a scribes wizard who was an ace with those, and it always made my DM happy to be able to lore-dump on the party or give us more information.
So honestly I don't see the harm. It's not like people are likely to spend their limited gold on information skills when they could spend it on a potion.
100 GP for permanent +5 to all knowledge-based skill checks is absolutely too much. This would be a very powerful uncommon magic item; getting it for 100 GP at a local bookseller is outrageous.
All modules have set DCs for important knowledge drops; this trivializes those if you use it that way.
I think it's fine if you play it as-written, which means the DM adjudicates what the topic of the book is and you get +5 to only checks related to that topic.
I tend to collect things like that form adventures, book with titles and other fun stuff. In a Adventurer's League game I found "Cults of the Moonsea", it felt something like a story award-that might have use in another adventure. I would use such a book to find traces of cult activity in that region.
I don't disagree, I think its way more reasonable on a specific topic like "Water Cults of Oerth"
But, I think we might be underestimating how onerous that "if you consult it" and "accurate" are
Referencing 4 tomes for specific details, on a unique thing is not going to be quick
Even if you read it liberally, and allowed the +5 for all four checks with 4 books, its not the same as an always on bonus
Goodbur, my gnome, still wants to craft a Map of Hommlet and surrounding hills.
WCAG announcing via their Instagram account that there will be some online sessions of "never before played" Legends of Greyhawk adventures. Whether that means they have new adventures ready or they think their followers haven't played the current array of adventures is an open question.
They posted the same on their Bluesky account too
They mean their Wild Coast adventures that nobody has played!
Hope so!
Know so!
Not a social I usually check!

A lot of mundane equipment has surprisingly powerful impact now. I mean, a costume gives you advantage on rolls to impersonate that type of person. perfume gives you advantage on Persuasion checks against indifferent humanoids. That's pretty gosh-darned significant for the gold outlay. (And you'd better believe Raj, being a Charlatan, has a few costumes and a bottle of nice cologne stashed away in his pack!)
I like the mundane stuff getting actual mechanical use. I've had a lot of new players look at me like, "So it says I've got a mirror in my equipment? What does that do?" and then me not having a satisfactory answer for them. XD So it's nice that they've added mechanics to these things.
This always makes me think of that scene in Rambo 3.
"What is this?"
"Blue light"
"What does it do?"
Click - "it turns blue"
Blank stare and confusion
But I do agree. It is so awesome to see those mundane items be given actual details to help players think about the items and maybe even outside of the box what they can do.
For the book thing, I would try to use it in-game, in such a way that 1) Players realize they need more information about something; 2) Players go on a mission to find said information by going to a Library or rare books store; 3) Player's buy the book, study it, and then make their roll with +5. The mechanics of the game should serve the story.
I would not consider it possible for a player to pre-buy a library worth of books just so they have specific knowledge about every possibe thing that may come up..... Maybe if the call to action gives away something about a very specific piece of knowledge, and they go out of their way to go find a book about it, then sure
Trouble with that is that they can just buy books now, according to the rules. It's equipment in the PHB, plus it's given out in some character creation.
The scholar's pack (default for wizards) just has "book," and three backgrounds have book (prayers), book (philosophy), and book (history).
Yeah, but it’s the DM who decides whether the information in the book is relevant to the check. This is a non-issue AFAIC…. If it’s information that would be in a general run of the mill book that every apprentice wizard starts with then they shouldn’t even need to do a check to get the information.
I personally find "if you can use the book you don't need the book" kind of a bad call, but different strokes for different folks.
If someone's spending exceptionally-limited gold on books, just let em get some use out of them.
But how would they know which book to get ahead of time?
Unless it's general knowledge
I mean, I guess it could be fun to RP a character who's carrying around the Encyclopedia Greyhawkia on their back through a dungeon, lol
Consults the Encyclopedia Greyhawkia for green slime. Entry reads: don't eat.
I like the idea of picking a specific subject for a book my character has in their starting equipment, like a book about dragon hunting patterns or something, and then maybe it might pay off or it might just be a thing he has for flavour
I agree that niche books are fun and flavorful, but I think books should give their mechanical effect. New players will have "book (history)" in their inventory, they should get the bonus if they remember they have it and want to use it for the majority of instances.
Perfume gives you advantage on Persuasion checks against indifferent humanoids, not just ones that arbitrarily like the scent of Eau du Goblin.
I just keep coming back to the DM has plenty of "outs" if they don't want the book to apply.
- You dont have time to consult the book if you want to get through this in time
- This knowledge is too esoteric to be included
If there is no time constraint and the knowledge is realistically in said book. Why wouldn't you want the players to be able to get the info?
This Komori said what I've been trying to say, just much better and with fewer words.
I've been trying to remeber the KISS acronym as of late (keep things simple stupid) and while I 1000% agree and would argue that for a homebrew game having a uniquly flavored book should be the standard. However in LoG, or an adventure book or AL adventure, KISS is what the default should be. Let the player have that generic "book of history" they paid gold for. It doesn't hurt anyone and they feel important. Win win.
The mechanical effect is that the book gives +5 on a topic in the book. It doesn't say it gives +5 on every topic in the universe. Just the topic in the book.
It's not an iPad 😛
How do you know?! I mean it could be! 😉
Irl example would be the “Young adventurer’s series”, which talks about monsters in general but don’t give out stat block details. In game, a PC might have a book about green dragon and gain a bit of knowledge knowing it breath weapon damage type if they pass the check with a bonus, or even its immunity if they roll high, but no matter how high the result be, the PC won’t know the dragon’s current HP, for example.
Players should never know the monsters HP from any kind of roll imo. It defeats the fun of the game. Plus there are spells and mechanics players can get to learn other details about monsters as is.
Signed up to finally play LoG 1-1 at DragonCon; planning on showing up with a dragonborn paladin, but feeling like I should have a 'secondary' option if i show up at the table and the table is 'lopsided' ie one or two paladin players also at the table
class balance isn't really important. Play what you want.
Level 1 parties can't really get all that lopsided. Casters only have a couple of spell slots and the difference between proficient and nonproficient skills is a measly 2 points, so you're never really lacking in anything.
Plus you can never have too many paladins in a level 1 party. Their Lay on Hands is 5 times someone else can go unconscious and (probably) not die.
Glad you signed up, see you there. 👍🏼
Good luck and say hi to the Tea- flingers from us here!
So does Emridy exclusively use pre-gens? I don't see rules for generating a LOG PC above 1st level.
ah thanks so, 1 uncommon item and 500 gp thanks
Don’t be to attached to your character either! While there will be pregens for Emridy, it was known as a killing field and many heroes lost their lives.

Cool
I might have lost in the web, mind pointing me directly to DM sign up? Gotta get my hands on all the modules and DM character levels ready for T2 games!
Absolutely link to the event page with sign up form at the bottom DM Signup or feel free to DM me on discord.
now time to make a new character for the Lordship of Isles... which seems very involved with the underworld. Paladin it is.
my chars a cleric of Pelor 🤣
it was recommended to make a character for each region?
progression makes it make sense
need to read up on the Wild Coast and Highfolk regions again to freshen up on the lore for character ideas.
i only have a char for the islands, but i cant say i looked into the lore terribly deeply
need to restart them level 1 to make them official char
If you want to take a peek at the adventure blurbs that are posted 😄
But I can say the LOI content is targeted at first level characters 001 is APL 1, 002 and 003 are APL 2, and the Special is APL 3
I am SURE though that some folks will want to bring their 3s and 4s and get to tier 2 😄
We intend to support both approaches
yeah reading the blurbs this seems like a fitting place for a more roguish or morally flexible character, I'm looking forward to it!
I did make our logo piratey for this 😄
