I thought that was always how it was. You could only select a battle pass you had purchased to earn the rewards from it once the season was over.

The season was the time you could get the free rewards but the good thing about infinite was that you get the option to earn the rewards you paid for even after it expires unlike other games where the battle pass disappears regardless if you spent money on it and didn't complete it. As well as you have the option to go back and buy a past season of you like what was in it but didn't get it at the time
