the sooner the catch, the higher the odds of leg, and if you wait too long you won't get leg at all but you can still catch one
3 seconds between bobs, fourth one always has the catch if 3 bobs no catch
you can close your eyes and fish if you don't want to be baited by the bobbing

There can only be three fake bobs, so the fourth bob is always real if the first three were fake. Fake bobs have an interval of 2-5 seconds while the real bob has an interval of 1-2 seconds. So if it takes more than 2 seconds, it should be a fake bob. Meaning you should look for the real bob within a short time after you start fishing or within a short time after a previous bob.

Personally, I just look for the white flash above the bobber and ignore the bobber itself. Some players have said they have better success when putting their thumb on the bobber to not get distracted by that, so maybe you could give that a try.

A Perfect Catch means catching a fish within 340ms. Perfect Catches are 50/50 on being a legendary or rare fish. Any other catch is 50/50 on being a rare or common fish.

If you take them in tartarus or asphodel, you lose the ability to control your run (force the gods you want in via their keepsakes) which is a huge lose in your damage. if you take them later then that, the amount of stacks you get from them are so minimal that it isn't worth it

There are 2 types of doors they are marked by the laurel around it (gold or blue)
Gold laurel contains buffs for your runs
-god boons, those are the power ups(you can see who's who by their icon; Poseidon = trident, Zeus = lightning and so on)

Gold coins = used in shop or Charon wells (purple wells found during chambers)
Heart = more hp
Hammer = upgrade to the weapon itself

Darkness = use at mirror
Keys = used to unlock weapons and more mirror skills
Gemstones = use at the contractor (shade next to dad), these upgrades include stuff like fountain rooms to recover hp or pots with gold you can break (along a few other upgrades, but they take a while to show up)
Nectar = gift to a character to advance their storyline, the first nectar usually gives you a keepsake, which can be equipped at the cabinet in the courtyard/where your weapons are for buffs

When the game offers you the doors it'll always be just blue laurels or golden laurels, they can't be mixed

And regarding what abilities to take
First there's core boons, those are shown to the left of your UI and buff a certain part of Zag's moveset
They are always named the with the same stuff
strike - attack
Flourish - special
Shot - cast
Dash - dash
Aid - call
You can only have one per slot

All other boons are passive effects (can be shown by pressing B on keyboard or minus on controller)

You can lvl up any boon, as many times as you find poms

But they do have dimishing returns, with most boons falling off at like lvl 5 or so

For the start of the run you can actually influence who you want to start with

Gifting nectar to a god gives you their keepsake which "makes the next boon you find to be that god"

So if you wanna start athena always for example, gift her nectar then equip her keepsake

Oh yeah what I wanted to write before

To know what's better to deal dmg you can differentiate gods between 2 cases.

% gods = gods that their boons say "your weapon does +x%"(aphro/athena/pos/artemis).

Flat dmg gods = gods that add an extra effect to your weapon (zeus attack for example makes your weapon create a chain lightning which does 13 dmg, there's also ares and dionysus, though ares is a bit of a special case)

Depending on your weapon you may want one type of god over the other

Something like sword or bow attack wants a % god (ideally aphrodite or Artemis, highest % and crits are just nice dmg respectively) because they have high base dmg but medium/slow speed

Some later weapons prefer something like zeus attack because their base dmg is lower and hit often

So once you have most god keepsakes (and later on, an upgrade that allows you to see boon lists) you can decide better in what you want to take mid run

What I mean is that something like zeus attack later on wants to find more zeus boons to get a boon called static discharge for example

Or more general
Taking certain boons allows you to unlock duo boons, which combine the abilities of two gods for stronger effects

For example taking Artemis attack, then an aphro core boon (let's say aphro's dash) gives you a chance to see heart rend, where enemies with weak inflicted take +150% more crit dmg

Oh yeah forgot one of the biggest explanations

So you know your dash,
For most of its duration you are invincible

But if you are mid dash and do any sort of attack (most commonly dash strikes) that invincibility will be removed

So if you time your dashes right, you can even dodge attacks while going through them

@sterile ingot the hammers significantly change your options. The spear throw is much better on the hidden aspect and achilles
