what scares the most is that even with a medic salary you cant afford a car fully

Car is a mechanical thing, so even if it's brand new or old, something can be wrong. Ofc with new car the risk is far lower and you have manufacturer warranty to cover it. But I'd buy around 2-3 year old car if I had the money, rather than a new one, because new car loses a lot of value as soon as it rides out of the salon. (What model you're taking about, btw?)

And yea, it's so sad that such jobs as medic are underpaid

And probably more class based than usual because you likely need resources for your disability, and to become a competitive athlete

You also likely don't have a parent to drive you around if you are poor

They are either working, or you have a single parent and they're working

That is especially important for some disabilities that limit mobility

It doesnt make me feel hopeful as a disabled person, you know. That isn't someone like me competing. Not any more than any other person really.

A part of that is another issue. Paralympics is just Disabled broadly speaking.

coming in very late to say i've been thinking about the paralympics and it is cool that disabled people have a chance to compete in sports because that's historically been denied but there's been issues of cheating, like people faking intellectual disabilities, and the committee in charge of it is apparently not doing a very good of handling it

also not the fault of the paralympics but there's an inspiration porn aspect by abled people that happens because of it

found out that the US team might be the only team that pays their disabled athletes the same as the non-disabled athletes, which shocked me because the athletes with disabilities likely have higher costs of living

there was a time i have been invited to join training for the city's football team, that consists only of people with musculoskeletal system disability (specifically one leg)

at first i've seen that as an opportunity to really try something new, but after first couple of trainings it became obvious that i can't really join, bc even though i can't walk without canes, i still have two legs, even if left one is weak and messed up since childhood

and i still can use it somehow to kick the ball, like i used to with neighbour kids back in the day

but that was against the rules - everybody else had no second legs and that gave me an advantage

also a risk of falling, that others didn't have, but i did.. every knee bending equals fracture for me

so i had to quit, and that made me think a lot

it's not that easy to find people with exactly the same limits to make the competition fair

even healthy people are too different, and not everything can be achieved only by training

and here the difference is even more apparent.. so i don't really believe everything can be fair in such thing as sports

actually, tbh, since some point i don't even understand sports.. desperate tries to prove something, pushing to the extreme limits

accidents, injuries

frauds, cheatings

for what purpose

also.. living in a country that spent billions and billions on another olympic games, building a whole facility.. and then abandoned it for years, so now it serves no purpose at all other that being partially disassembled for scrap by local hobos..

and knowing all that money could be spent for something really meaningful, like, helping actual disabled people

that doesn't really help thinking about all that in a positive way

I only heard a story from a guy in a wheelchair that attended tennis at the paralympics and got matched up aganist a woman with a foot prothesis, which was pretty much an instant loss for him

he seemed to dislike that competition a lot for that

on the other hand you cant make everyone happy and the paralympics seem to be positive for other people

Yes, Animal Crossing is the more obvious example of optimism, but Plague Inc's escapism then led to the current DLC, where the goal is to find a cure instead of wipe out the world. And it's remaining free until the pandemic ends. And just that warms my heart: that even the developers of the most well-known pandemic game of all time have hope during these times

A lot of people have a sense of black-and-white thinking when it comes to optimism and pessimism, and often conflate the latter as a "more realistic world view." But I can look at the injustices and terrible events of the world and still work to better them. It's what I fricking do for a living. Hope is rebellious.

In fact, one of the main reasons I am considering going into public health is because of the pandemic (although I should have seen it coming: communicable diseases have been an interest to me since middle school). I mean, we wiped out smallpox! Do people not realize how amazing that was? How much that ravaged people for centuries? Hope is not just rebellious: it's the trigger for a better world.

As someone who formerly worked at Starbucks, coffee does some of the funniest things to people. As Hapi from Fire Emblem Three Houses once said about coffee, "it kind of tastes like mud, but also, it's delicious and I never want to stop drinking it."

Caffiene also can do differant things to differant people.
For some it does nothing at all, for others it will make them feel sleepy and the rest it has the intended result.

For me I've never had a case where caffiene has had the intended result

When I first worked at Starbucks, I actually never had coffee before. So when it was time for me to taste the espresso drinks, oh boy, everyone was along for the ride.

It will only be about six months later that the morning shift people decided to ban me from drinking anything caffeinated during their shift lol.

I actually prefer espresso-based drinks over brewed coffee: much easier on my palate, which is strange because espresso is supposed to have a stronger flavor?! And yet I hate brewed coffee, even if it's dark roast?!

my take on NFTs is that its actually somehow even more sinister than it appears. the initial success of crypto was on the back of money laundering, and then the industry ('industry') used that success to bait financially vulnerable people into gambling their savings into the pockets of a few successful schemers and organised crime. crypto has no inherent value. every real dollar that comes out of crypto in profit is because someone else paid it in as loss; huge profits for the few at the expense of losses for the many. NFTs are a way to make crypto look like it has value. you're not buying a .txt file — you're buying art! but you're not, actually. its the same system. and the monkeys are ugly as hell.

and idk anything about metaverse but i had an interview last week with a high-level exec at meta and she was one of the least bearable people i've ever met, so my opinions are 'nope.'

Just some thoughts that I wrote out, not sure if there is really a specific channel this would be posted to, but perhaps it will resonate with some of you:

I used to think that there was ultimate value in having good ideas. I spent a solid portion of my life meticulously laboring to make sure whatever I conceptualized was, what I would consider, a good idea. Because I saw that a good idea formed a solid foundation for everything else built upon it, thus being self evident in it's value. And while I still think that last statement is true, the older I've gotten, the more I see good ideas not really mattering quite as much as I once thought. Because the thing about any idea is that it requires other people to buy into it in order for the idea to live. If the good idea is one that is more complex than most people care for, or if the idea is 'not' complex but just unfamiliar, or if the way that the idea is communicated is confusing, then the good idea will never exist in the world. What seems to matter more than having a good idea is the power to make 'any' idea (good, bad, or mediocre) happen. And this is what I am redoubling my efforts on in the coming years as I continue to search for peers willing and able to put in the work to see ideas come to life.
