Two options, one is a "smart switch" the other is a "module" that fits behind the existing switch
(for example)
awesome. Thank you!
Thanks for the reply, thats kinda the message im seeing around where its a hit or miss with the adapters
I dont have one plugged in directly. Im using a esp32 for Bluetooth detection. But the integration that i want to add needs it to be on the HA blue directly
I do search a temparature sensor for my living room which also mesure co2 humidity, etc.
Currently I do only have Zigbe (and for shure WLAN, router)
In best case it will work with battery, to place it wherever I like, but 220v is also ok.
What I try to use it for:
I'd like to check temparature and adjust the my heat valves (https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/devices/368308_2010.html#lidl-368308_2010) with it.
Any recommendations about that?
Perfect would be if the senor would have an display to adjust the temperature without smartphone

Yeah just go with a usb bt dongle then
Do you happen to know how this compares to https://github.com/shmuelzon/esp32-ble2mqtt ?
I also recommend monitor... without any extra configuration it already works very good (way better than the all time failing BT tracker), but you also have the possibility to fire arrival and departure events... since I use it I had no problem at all with my home presence detection
I can confirm (or so I think) that the problem is the graphite... I tried with an unmodified Aqara sensor and works like a charm! I'll have to wait patiently for the conductive glue to arrive 🤷♂️
ESPresense does room tracking doesn't it? I don't think ble2mqtt does
Well, it does, but it also reports signal strength
Ah yeah I guess that's a key component
And it works for all devices, not just those you configure it for
Ah, monitor requires you to manually specify?
The native BT integration doesn't require you to manually specify so it would seem like ble2mqtt would be closer to it
Yeah, the native integration floods your system with entities you don't care about
and also stops working until the host is restarted way too often
Yeah that's true. I haven't ever really used BT directly on my device to a full extent. My native BT setup is all screwed up on my NUC. I don't know why but the exact same BT dongle that works fine on say my desktop is flakey af on the NUC. And the NUCs built in BT is even worse
And this is excluding HA. I wrote up something to control my switchbots using their native lib and it was really flakey on the exact same dongle that wasn't flakey on another computer
and the built in BT I think didn't even work?
maybe it was some kind of interference. Drove me crazy though. Ended up having to buy a separate ESP board and flash something to it to control the switchbot. Still can be slow. Really made me dislike BTLE in general
Is there any restrictions or downfalls to use active usb extension cable with e.g. Zigbee and/or Z-wave USB adapters? Any other solutions how to place the adapter ~5meters away from the NUC? Idea is to place the adapters in roof to reach all HUE bulps outside the house and keep the NUC in the distribution board (share space with the switch).
Interesting, thank you. I actually don't have a ethernet inlet from the distribution board in to the roof atm, but I'll need to create one since I've a 4G mobile router that will be installed on the roof (above water roof). That's why I was just thinking should I install the USB cable as well to the roof, but the Zigbee coordinator sounds better.
Does anyone have an idea on how you could use a Philips hue light, keeping it permanently connected to a live, but using the switches in the room (multiway switches) to turn it on/off logically ?
I wondered if a Shelly something could be setup to detect a state change in voltage, either 0 to 240 or 240 to 0 (so the switched live that would nornally go to the light going to Shelly or something else) results in a trigger that uses HA to turn hue on/off
Would this be possible does anyone know?
Sure. You could permanently wire the bulb and use a smart switch (or remote) that's simply reporting the logical state of the switch to HA - not switching anything.
Then you can control the bulb using automations
I don't want to replace the switches, but I can throw the switched live to a device (and a neutral if required)
Do you know if this is possible / what I could use (any links to info much appreciated!!)
You don't have to replace the switches, you can fit a module behind the existing switch
(as discussed earlier today)
No way I have space, they're 4 gangs in a double socket, all multiway 😆
You can put the modules elsewhere, like by the light
You're going to have to do something like that to do what you want
Is there any info on how to set it up software wise ? Doesn't seem to suggest it can do what I need unless I missed something
Any good reading on ZigBee vs zwave? Future proof, matter, thread?
I'm wondering the same thing, ZigBee and z-wave are very similar from what I understand, ZigBee has to be certified, but also makes it more expensive and locked down, z-wave is usualyl cheaper because its just an open standard
I'm after a door look, not something crazy expensive, I'm wanting 2-3 of them. After pin code + HA integration for my 2 requriement, not fussy on protcol since I only use wifi atm, still need to pick Zigbee or Z-wave
Wrong way around. Z wave is expensive, zigbee is cheaper and is open standard. Z wave uses specific frequencies depending on your location, zigbee is all 2.4Ghz
Well at least I got the general idea haha, Z-Wave sounds better than? 2.4ghz is just so congested, my 2.4ghz wifi has issues when the microwave is working
I’ve had no issues with zigbee, as it uses a mesh, unlike normal wifi, all mains powered zigbee talk to each other
I'm looking at getting these https://www.liquidate-it.com.au/shop/p/lockwoodtlock seams to be by far the most recomended on a thread on the forms for Australian smart locks, and uses Zigbee
Yeah heard the same about them. Got one haven’t installed it yet
Seams to get mostly good feedback... any Zigbee dongle you recomend? currently running HA on a Pi4, but about to migrate to a VM on my new NAS its got a i7-8700
Buy something CC2652 based. This list is a good one, both Tube and Electrolama have been proven to have excellent customer service. The current generation of EZSP sticks (see here for some) are also a good choice for ZHA.
Anything CC2530 or CC2531 based should be avoided - they're old, slow, and only suitable for a dozen or so devices. The Sonoff ZBbridge isn't advised since it uses WiFi (built in interference causing stability/reliability issues), and the HUSBZB-1 uses an older chipset so should be avoided.
Finally, the ConBee range are fine with deCONZ, but experience with ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT appears to be mixed.
Also #zigbee-archived is the best channel for this stuff
What do you think guys think is the best media player hardware? Sonos, the Ikea speaker, Google speakers? I have bose right now but they tend to lose connection once a day.
The IKEA speakers are sonos for reference
I didn't realise you could buy Nanoleaf stuff pre-made. All the ones I've seen have been 3D printed. Gosh, these are expensive https://www.toolstation.com/search?q=nanoleaf
I think "best" is a bad word to use because it's very subjective. My definition of "best" could well differ from yours because we have different circumstances and needs. Please will you describe what you desire from your speaker in terms of functionality and budget and how you think your system would be in terms of where in your home you would like to cover?
Any recommendations for a lightswitch? Don't mind if it's wifi or zigbee (it's got mains power anyway, obviously).
Was looking at the glass sonoff one

Alrighty... I'm in the UK, budget er... well wouldn't expect to pay more than £20 for a lightswitch... zigbee or wifi. Just need to be able to turn it on/off at the switch and through ha or an app of some kind (though this is likely some horrible, buggy half chinese one)
Though actually if something exists with a motion sensor and a light level sensor, that could kill a few birds with one device...
£20, for a smart switch with sensors... 🤣
Well ok, for a light switch... £20, if there's one with sensors that's not the same device 😛
£20 for a smart switch that's not utter crap is being optimistic
Sonoff is probably around there though, so "slightly crap" for £20 is do-able
what about wifi light bulbs. I've had great success with LIFX for a year or 2 with HA. Integrates well and their support is pretty good
Sonoff's quality is ... variable
Better depends on many factors, but at £20 you're not going to get better, just meh
for an multisensor dectection/lux/humidity/temp etc zwave aeotec multisensor 6/7 aint bad
and I guess do you really want to wire up a 20 pound china special in to your house
Ok so alternative question... what then, is the rolls royce of smart light switches?
If budget was no factor... 🙂
Just looking at the zwave multisensor - nice...
Lutron RadioRA3
about $150/dimmer
Very nice, they look good too.
Are there any simple indicator light solutions out there? Like imagine an RGB lightbulb, but instead it's a tiny box with an LED that you can control from HA.
You could easily do that with WLED
Yeah and then I need a ESPwhatever and a 3D printed enclosure yada yada, I'm too lazy to fix my 3D printer right now, so I was wondering if there's something readymade
There's a few ready made units that you just hook the LEDs to
Aight cool
Looking for a Zigbee siren. Any recommendations?
#zigbee-archived has lists of known working hardware, and is the best place to ask about Zigbee stuff
I just got an Ecobee, is their service down or is it me? Unable to get through setup and it seems like they may be having issues
Does there happen to be a way to view specific hardware information without needing a reboot?
In ... Home Assistant OS?
Yes, trying to figure out the exact network card model.

Anybody have a preferred remote they’d recommend?
I’m in the US, Wi-Fi coverage is known good, and I don’t have line of sight to my zigbee/zwave dongle so not sure if either of those will reach where I want it to operate (I’m open to suggestions about bridging either to LAN while I’m at it.)
Hoping for something I can use to trigger 4 or so scenes for lights. Battery powered preferred but I’ve only ever tried an aqara button before so I’m open to learning about all options. Budget is kind of up in the air since I know so little about the topic, but if I can get something that works for me I’ll probably want 3-4 total so cheaper is nice. That said if I have to pay more for a better-quality answer I’m game.
Currently renting so I can’t opt for something that installs in place of existing light switches.
Zigbee's mesh is all that counts (same for Z-Wave), not direct range to the coordinator
The Aqara button is pretty good IMO, as is the Hue Dimmer
The Aqara cube is fun
I've got an Aqara cube, seemed to work 95% of the time for a while (maybe a year or more) but then it stopped pretty much overnight; tried swapping batteries but no luck. Is it possible the configuration in HA got borked by an update or something? Had same/similar issue with my button.
Re: Zibee's mesh: battery-powered units don't extend the mesh...do they? I haven't tried anything that plugs into a socket, might be that I just need to get a plug or two to daisy chain the connection where I want it. The whole mesh network thing sounds very appealing to me, I just don't know very much about it.
If you have no mains Zigbee devices you don't have a mesh, which is likely why the cube stopped working
If I added a mains Zigbee device could non-mains devices use that to communicate with my coordinator, or is it no-mains == never-mesh?
Thanks
Yes, the "non-mains" devices are end devices, the mains devices are (mostly) routers for the mesh - see the pinned messages in #zigbee-archived for details
Thanks for the clarification and direction. I've been meaning to read up on the topic, this seems like an apt time to get on that.
have a read of this too: https://community.hubitat.com/t/xiaomi-aqara-devices-pairing-keeping-them-connected/623
Will do, thanks!
Looking for some advice on what outdoor bulbs to buy. I live in the US and looking for something on the cheaper end that is reliable. I would like for the light bulbs to have RGB and be tunable.
I'm trying to determine if the remote for my Frigidaire air conditioner is IR or something else. I don't have the remote unfortunately. I'm reading the manual though and I'm seeing it say that you need to point it towards the unit. This would probably indicate that it's IR, right? The model is FFRA0622U10. Unfortunately the manual doesn't seem to say explicitly
Sounds like it’s ir
Because of the pointing thing? Or other reasons?
It's there any change to use a bluetooth usb passthrought to vm hassio?
Found old laptop celeron dual core 3gb ram. Will be enough to run HA? Xubuntu + vm
Hello everyone, I want to ask, I'm currently making an IoT project that can measure sound in decibels using the Ky-037 sensor, but after I tried repeatedly for 3 months, the ky-037 sensor has not been able to measure sound in decibels. Can anyone give me solutions and suggestions so I can measure sound in decibels using nodemCU/ESP32?. I really need your opinion🙏
Try the #diy-archived channel
Or better try on samsung galaxy s7?

Hello! I'm new to Home Assistant, so please bear with me. I'm trying to add a couple of Zigbee devices to my Conbee2 and add them to HomeKit using HASS Bridge. The IKEA outlets I've added show up in HomeKit, but the door lock does not. The lock can be controlled from within Home Assistant and "locks" are checked in HASS Bridge so they should be exposed. Where do I start to troubleshoot?
Last time I dabbled with Home Assistant, I had to use Phoscon web app to add devices, but this time I added them directly from Home Assistant.
If they're in HA you want the #integrations-archived channel for help with HomeKit
I'm looking at buying a device for a bedside table to stream our nanny camera to at night. Will an Amazon Echo Show 8 work as a media player? Or do I need a chromecast device?
I posted this earlier in #general-archived but realised this was a more appropriate place to ask
#cameras-archived is probably your best bet, I don't know about the Show, I know that you can stream to a Chromecast device, but those will turn the stream off after 10 minutes, so you'd have to re-cast
hi everyone, since two days i habe an issue with my zigbee stick.
it looks like it would not be recognized by my odroid n2+, the hardware page show no connected device.
Dose enyone else have this issue with the new OS?
I Use:
Home Assistant Core 2022.5.5
Home Assistant Supervisor 2022.05.2
Home Assistant OS 8.1
Kernel version 5.15.41
Agent version 1.2.1
ah good to know!
I might be better off building something with an old raspberry pi
Guys I've just watched this weeks Paul Hibbert where he compares ha to hubitat. The hubitat seems a decent price to include the 2 radio protocol support. Wacky idea, but is there a way to install ha onto a hubitat?
what even is their hardware based on?

And I cand find how to
What is the simplest Wi-Fi device with buttons that a 1year old could click and be connected to my HA? (Apart from making it from scratch on earphone) 🙌🏻

not sure if this is the correct forum, but what is a good presence sensor? the FP1 Aqara is not yet available and just with motion sensors I can't get my lights to stay on IN front of the TV. any suggestions?
what type of network? for zigbee if you have $$ the philips hue, I heard the RF PIR sensors are very reliable
yeah, I'm on zigbee
I will look at that one
Seems to be also only a motion sensor
I will try to get my hands on the FP1 I guess
need to see how I can get it from China....
Anyone else having intermittent issues with their Kasa devices losing connection recently? I'm not sure if it's an issue with the TP-link devices or possibly a bad service call causing it to get an error. I have a number of KL125 that have been dropping from the network but it almost seems like they are freezing up or restarting. I hadn't logged into the Kasa app for a while but had to the other day to reset a device..wondering if an update got pushed out from TP-Link. Anyone know how to troubleshoot what's going on for the device? I doubt they make it easy to see the logs 😅
KL125 Firmware / Hardware version from Home Assistant:
Firmware: 1.0.7 Build 211009 Rel.172044
Hardware: 1.20
My NSPanel's touchscreen does not work after flashing tasmota32.bin
Did I do something wrong?

@winged knoll a time ago you linked my a device to connect to lan and controll ZigBee devices? But can't seem to find it anymore

Did you maybe consider that you could just have asked in the right channel, and anybody could have helped you?
Hint ||there's a whole channel dedicated to Zigbee||
Looking for suggestions on on robot vacuums. I've done some research and so far I'm leaning towards the Roborock S7. Location is NA if that matters
Too bad about the Valetudo support, but the integration with HA looks pretty good otherwise
Looking at building a new machine for HA, storage, security cameras, Plex, etc, deciding on a motherboard, would there be any use case where it would be beneficial to get a mobo with Wi-Fi? It would be a wired setup but I wondered if there was anything cool that you could do with the Wi-Fi and if it could connect to any smart home devices? Might not be possible.
Wired > WiFi, and your (WiFi) smart home devices would connect to your WiFi access point/router
Ahh okay thank you for that. I wont bother with it then 🙂
I know this new Aqara fp1 presence sensor works with Zigbee2mqtt, but does it work with DeConz too?

Hi everyone, I'm new here and new to HA, but not new to technology. I've setup a usb-ITead_Sonoff_Zigbee_3.0_USB_Dongle_Plus, which I've flashed to the new firmware. All working OK with a couple of Zigbee switches. My question is how to confirm that the device is using the correct radio band. I'm in Australia and I've read that Zigbee 3.0 uses 915 MHz in the US and Australia. Sounds like a good thing to get out of the crowded 2.4 GHz band, but how can I confirm that is what is actually happening? Spectrum analyzer perhaps?
I have ADC-T2000 thermostat (Z-Wave). How do i control this device with HA or any other app
do you have a z-wave hub connected to HA?
No, i do not have a hub now. i bought a home with alarm.com security system. it controls the thermostat with zwave. now i want to move it to home assistant
could you provide the reference hub to intergrate
I have the "Nortek HUSBZB-1" it's a bit hefty in price but it is a hub for both zigbee and zwave. I'm sure you can get a cheaper individual dongle for only z-wave. I dont own any zwave devices yet so I can't really help you out there.
Thanks, will do some research
no problem! good luck!
With a raspberry pi and the 7” touch display, Is there anyway to have home assistant use the display as a touch panel vs the console/login screen?
Not if you are running Home Assistant OS.
Running Container or Core versions you could have a web browser display the frontend. This is also possible with a Supervised install but I would not recommend it.
yeah, i did the os.. so to undoing the case to install arch with home assistant is the better option i guess..... seems like an easy solution for Home Assistant OS though....
I mean i have to spend 1/2 hour of my life undoing this naive mistake 🙂
anyone?
hello, I would like to see pollen in air concentration. Usually it's above 10um, do you know if there are sensor to measure particles bigger than 10um? Thanks
I have the Aeotec gen 5. Works great but it might be a little outdated. Only does zwave but has been the go-to device for zwave for a while. #zwave-archived could assist also with newer models. There is a thread on the forums about the adc-2000 and also a custom component for adc.
Looks like the adc-2000 may have been officially added to zwavejs
Does anyone have any hunch on why I can’t seem to migrate my install from an SD card to an usb SSD? It boots but it fails rather often
You likely wanted the #installation-archived channel
Probably it's a power supply issue - the SSD draws more power
Thanks, I thought it has a hardware question
That’s my hunch too. The ssd has spikes of power above what the raspberry can provide.
You might look into a USB enclosure with an external power supply.
Any recomendation?
If that is the culprit however, there should be a low-power warning in the OS logs...Can't promise that though, I'm only speaking from my experience using RaspberryPis for other things.
What sort of SSD do you have?
I'd start with checking the logs, but not sure where those would be on your OS, my HA instance is HASS in a VM on a NUC so my underlying OS may be different?
Hmm, have you seen this?
But something along these lines:
https://www.amazon.ca/UGREEN-External-Enclosure-Adapter-Housing/dp/B076WQHK2G
The suggestion of a powered USB hub in #installation-archived is also a good option.
I am building a new house and want to choose my lights. I want them to be dimmable and integrate into HA.
Any advice on what lights and dimming technology to use/avoid?

One option you have is to not make the bulbs smart, but the light switches
what about Valetudo support? Valetudo has a list of vacuums that work with it.. I have a xiaomi v1 which works fine with valetudo/HA..
To answer your question though: it depends on your budget
I was optimistic but it seems like the latest Roborock doesn't have great support for it so it kinda feels like going forwards there may be less support there?
Any recommendations on vertical blinds (sliding glass door) with a wand integration?
This set doesn't have pull strings, which most of the automations that I'm looking at require, but it has a wand that rotates and opens/closes the blinds.
If I can get both rotate and open/close awesome!
at minimum: rotate (preferably with a sensor that will reject the command if the blinds are open.. I'll be setting up a script/automation for this if it comes down to it)
I'm in the US, budget is unknown at the moment, protocol: no preference (have a smartthings hub which has both zigbee and zwave)
I replaced my Vivint system with a HomeAssistant based setup. The only issue so far is the cheapa--ed doorbell Vivint used. It had to be replaced twice by them. Once for a recall (reportedly catching fire) and again because my ham-fisted delivery drivers destroyed it. I was able to get into it, reprogram and pull video from it. I was still working on audio. However someone rang the doorbell today and of course the button stuck and now I can't access the blasted thing anymore. I really don't want to have to reset the thing EVERY time this happens. So what are some recommendations for a decent, non bank breaking doorbells? Preferably WiFi, will use the current power wires, hopefully will either use the existing chimes or chime on my HAOS panel/phones. Of course 2-Way audio would be rally nice. Out other option is to install a smaller PTZ camera in the entryway and go old-school with the actual doorbell. Though that won't alert us remotely if someone rings the doorbell and I would have to setup an alert with the camera. That would leave me open to "false alarms" whenever it detects motion. I am in the US (Oklahoma City), have a MESH WiFi system with Gig internet from Cox.
Hi everyone, i have a Odroid N2+, that i tried learn about but I need to sell it instead.
Wich is the easiest way to make a factory reset on it before selling?
Note; i'm not good at this.😂
Hello, I am new to Home Assistant.
I can't add my Aeotec Home Energy Meter Gen 2 firmware 1.8 correctly.
The inclusion is done, I have different sensors but no values. I tried various settings in the configurations of the clamps but without success.
As well as a reset and deletion of the device.
What to do?
Thanks in advance...

I heard about them but didn't see too much talk of them when doing research
I currently have a TP Link switch controlling/switching the lights in one of my rooms. I am thinking of getting some CCT bulbs to allow for circadian lighting. I really dont want to lose wall switch capability though, and I know you shouldnt switch smart bulbs.
Thinking of just wiring the lighting load to the hot, capping off the switch leg, and then just setting up an automation to turn the bulb on/off based on the switch state.
Am I overlooking anything that would be better?
I guess I should test first and see if the TP link will still work if it detects no load.
I'm having some trouble getting the reed sensorsfor my Garage Door openers (Shelly1's) to show the status in HA. The status just shows as unavailable as you can see below
Here is what I added to my configuration.yml
https://pastebin.com/7wcWG3ij
Does anyone know of an iPhone app that I can create a quick rtsp stream from Frigate?
I'd ask the folks in #cameras-archived
i guess i might be in the right channel here - currently im running ble_monitor (yeah no support, but the problem is deeper) and suddenly it stopped working, the sensors stopped updating. When i checked its settings it told me that there are no bt controllers present. bluetoothctl scan on also tells me, that theres no default controller available. sucks.
raspberry pi 3b
on hass.io
fixed with a full reboot - ui tricked me into thinking that i rebooted the pi, instead i just restarted core lmao
Just about to buy 17 smart switches for the extension, cant wait for them to be wired in so I can set them all up in HA haha
Hi there!
I'm looking for a recomendation! I just got some blinds installed in my house and I want to be able to control those in home assistant. I have been searching online but I can't find anything that fully suites me but diy solutions (which i don't mind if there is nothing else).
I'm looking for a blind controller that can be attached to the pulling string and if possible to be controlled via zigbee or wifi. If possible that can connect to a power source for no battery operation.
There's a bunch of Zigbee options, see https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/supported-devices/#s=blind and https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/supported-devices/#s=roller
https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/devices/TI0001-cover.html for instance
Or the Zemismart M515EGB
Yes, i had laready make that searchs, but i was looking for a device recomendation that suits the requirements.
Thanks anyway!
The Zemismart one works
Hi guys, new to smart home stuff - I just want to find an extension lead that I can control with my phone over wifi & no internet connection 😄
I've been searching a long time on the net and i read stuff about tasmota/esp-home/zigbee etc but I really just want something very simple.
Am I overcomplicating the search for an extension lead or is the world of home automation really this complex of a rabbit hole?

- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)

Your country will have the biggest influence over your options
Country:England
Budget:Not to bothered
Protocols:I have nothing right now except WiFi
Features:Turn on and off individual sockets via phone & maybe turn on/off at specific time
England... well, there's not a lot of smart extension leads for UK sockets.
Outside of PDUs I don't think there's any any more. Single sockets, sure, but not multiple ones
A single socket would probably work fine also, I could just plug an extension lead into it I guess - it's for a bearded dragon vivarium to turn on/off his heat bulb & uv bulb
Then you've got a load of options, even some not totally crap WiFi ones
Personally I'd go Zigbee, it's cheap, scales well, and is always 100% local
Don't I need a dedicated device to act as a hub for this though?
You'd need a Zigbee coordinator - which is a fancy USB stick with a radio in it
But then you could also get Zigbee sensors, such as ones to measure the temperature and humidity in that vivarium
i'd be open to zigbee stuff if I got into home automation a bit more but for now I just want this single device
Thats pretty cool 😄
The challenge is that most WiFi stuff is cloud locked
I have home assistant running in docker on a synology NAS at the moment as I was just curious - not really doing anything with it though
https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/wemo/ is one option, it is at least local
What is the best hardwired smart door bell that works with HA? Everything I find is battery operated or subscription based/not local.
anybody using the aqara temp/humidity sensor and noticing issues with the battery? mine is running out fast. I have it running for a few weeks now and the battery reached 62%
Sounds like #zigbee-archived - and that they're in a weak signal/high interference location
What is a good robot vacuum brand, I’m not worried about price or country so far, just looking into basics. Would the iRobot ones be any good?
I’m looking at the Roomba i3/ J7, wonder how well it works with HA
so a weak signal will spend batteries faster? right now, that sensor has an LQI of 109, is that considered weak?
Yes, and not terrible, but LQI is a vague hint
what reliable way can be used to check for signal strength?
#zigbee-archived can help with all Zigbee things
if you planning to use valetudo, they have quite a good list : https://valetudo.cloud/pages/general/supported-robots.html
Back on stock if anyone were looking for Aqara FP1 presence sensors
https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_Ae6F9v
Leave it blank...
Got a usb zigbee dongle and a couple sensors to play around with. Was able to get one configured and working for a bit, but now it just shows a status of unavailable. I'm using ZHA. Could the fact that I have the mosquito broker installed be affecting things, even though I don't have any devices configured to use it?
Ah, I see there's a dedicated zigbee channel. Ignore me 🙂
What do I need to do to get HAos to recognize the system audio (speakers / mic via 3.5mm jack)?
audio:
input: {}
output:
auto_null: Dummy Output```
Same thing here. Noticing it on my HS103 the past few days after rebooting my router (though I'm not sure if that was the trigger or I just didn't notice it before). Not sure if it's a known issue with HA or just something in my setup. Just getting this generic " Error fetching 192.168.1.250 data: Unable to query the device 192.168.1.250: " error every so often which usually resolves itself within a few seconds or a minute, meanwhile in the Kasa app on my phone the device is always reachable.
I just got some Sunsa Wands for my blinds today and can highly recommend them... impressed how well they work
Issue is those vacuums on there are hard and/or expensive to get here
$800/900 now in aus
Plus doesn’t have a auto emptying station
Yeah it’s daylight robbery
Anyone know if shelly 1L can work without a switch
I have an always hot line however i can't figure out how to control power to the device and I have no physical switch
before flashing valetudo i used the standard xiaomi vacuum integration and it appears to work fine (although I didn't use the advanced features) I think the only thing was getting a map on the HA dashboard may require quite a number of steps.. but is available via HACS.. hope that helps
Is this the right place for advice on hardware solutions? If it's not I'm sorry
I have a dumb switch I want to trigger a smart light bulb with. Its a IKEA tradfi led strip, I can control with my phone or the driver button but I want the physical on the wall button to switch it on as well, rather than have the driver stuck on the wall. Is there a way to do this? Many thanks in advance
Does anyone know where (if anywhere) the list of devices and their popularity is? From the last State of the Open Home presentation, they shared (or maybe only showed?) a list of how many instances of each device were present in Home Assistant installations opted-in to analytics. That led me to try the Inovelli Red dimmer switch, which I like. So I've been wanting to look at that list again. But I haven't been able to find it after a few separate attempts when searching around. Sorry if this has been asked a bunch before, or is pinned somewhere and I'm just not coming up with the right search terms.
https://analytics.home-assistant.io/ is what was shown, but it doesn't cover devices
Hm... Wish I knew exactly what it was they showed, or in which presentation. I just have vague memory of a text list (HTML table-esque) of some of the most frequently-used devices.
There's no maintained list I know of. There are a lot of abandoned ones
In lieu of that, and noticing the pinned message, I'll ask for advice on the current thing I'm looking for; power outlets. (and thanks in advance!) 🙂
- Country: US
- Budget: Expecting $30-50 range, but there's not a hard cut-off.
- Prefer and currently only use Z-Wave, but can implement other local protocols if needed to support the right hardware.
- Features desired: Power monitoring, 20 Amp pass-through, 15-20A for plugged-in devices. Bonus points for remote control of one or both plugs.
Other, unexpected thing that'd be nice: any sort of power-monitoring AFCI/GFCI outlets (to have one per circuit).
Looking for a fan switch. My fan doesn’t have a pull chain at all. There is a switch with speed control already installed. In the us. Budget is whatever (Lurton prices don’t scare me). I’d prefer zigbee or zwave, no WiFi. I want speed control and monitoring
Also, not afraid of Lutron if that’s the best option. I also think that whatever brand I go with for the fans is what I go with for the light switches as well
I'm assuming this is a ceiling fan?
Yes sorry.
Is the current switch a "dimmer"?
Also, does it have lighting as well? And is that lighting on the same or separate circuit?
Switch is a dimmer style yes, no light in the fan
Yes, technically it should be a motor control switch which functions similar to a dimmer.
The only thing that comes to mind is the Lutron one.
Ok 👍
PD-FSQN
Ooo in black too. Hmm. I was thinking either the Lutron switches or the GE zigbee switches. I guess it’s Lutron for the whole house
says it only works with up to 1.5amp fan though..
How do I figure out how many amps my fan needs?
Oh I found the spec sheet. One fan says .5 amps on high
WC105-WH found the exact switch they used
Don't go Lutron right now, they are releasing a new Caseta series soon.
Ooh ok. How long do we think that’s going to be?
I'll be honest I have no clue. If you want something now, I'd get the GE Z-Wave one. I'd just feel bad spending full price on a soon to be last gen product lol
Yeah I might wait it out then. I think the current Caseta switches look like butt
I set up a couple s31 lite zigbee plugs to extend range for a hue remote. Now I’d like to move that hardware, temporarily, to a friend’s house to help determine if it’d fit his needs. Do I need to disassociate the hardware from my HA instance to be able to pair it when I get it to the other site?
You don't have to, but if you don't then you'll have mesh issues
Does anyone know if the following Cams can integrate into HA?
https://www.tink.de/eufy-solocam-solar-2k-s40-2er-set
Eufy Solocam S40, should be a good price, but I'm sceptical because of no RTSP..
#cameras-archived can help best with cameras, but if there's no RTSP it would need a dedicated integration
There is a integration, but the cam is not listed so I'm hoping someone has it and can report if it works..
@winged knoll would you recommend RTSP?
Yes
RTSP is local, and a standard
It's supported by lots of software, things like Frigate, MotionEye, etc
Okay but with only RTSP stream are there even further function like object detection and nightlight and so on?
Not with the stream, but that's where either a camera integration for that camera, support for ONVIF, or other software comes in
Okay, so always look for special integration or ONVIF
Well... depends on your goals really
ONVIF is RTSP and other stuff
But otherwise you want RTSP + dedicated integration or a camera that you can otherwise interface with
https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/hikvision for instance allows you to use the built in motion detection while using RTSP/ONVIF for the stream
Okay, thank you will read further..
Ah okay, I thought that might be the case. In this context would disassociating from my HA isntance just mean deleting the devices from my zha integration? I'm not too worried about the remote since it's got a reset switch under the battery cover, but I haven't seen anything on the s31's for resetting, and I'd like to avoid breaking them open if possible.
You have to remove them... how you do that with ZHA I don't know, but #zigbee-archived would
I totally forgot there was a channel for that. Thanks for the help!
I'm looking to see if anyone knows of a RPI4b case that is wall mountable that either has a plug built in or allow the case to "hang" from the plug. getting the inspiration from the Echo Dot holders
Can always drill a hole in any case and screw it to the wall
Or 3d print one
I think a lot of cases have screw slots on the bottom for mounting
is there a good replacement for the samsung/aeotec multifunction sensor that uses AA batteries or some such? sensors i'm mostly looking for is door/contact + temperature
see a lot of mention of the aqara door sensor but I'd like a temp sensor built in as well
anyone have a E21-N1EA smart led bulb and tried to get fading to work?
native fading to the bulb instead of having to send a bazillion commands to fade it.
How does everyone feel about the Kasa HS200? Looking to get this and adding it to HAOS
no 3d printer
I'm think more of one that mounts to the plug so it hangs below it
I'm looking to integrate an old TV and Amp into my system using an IR hub. Many of the products I see advertise that they work with Tuya. Is that a problem? I want to use Home Assistant, of course. Can I just ignore the Tuya bit?
Hi, I wondered whether any of you have tried using the Google Nest Hub as an interface? I currently have a raspberry pi running home assistance with a Zigbee USB dongle off of it. Is it possible to get google calendar and weather if I don't have a wifi connection?
I might have found the answer to my own question. Provided the device I buy uses a ESP82xx chip, I can flash it with Tasmota and that will allow me to use it directly with MQTT and home assistant (without the Tuya app).
Potentially wanting to get something like nano leaf, but want to have local control, be reasonably priced, and ZigBee or wifi. US/North America for regulations and availability.
looking for recommendations on zwave in-wall switches that are narrow enough to fit two in a gang box. US, whatever, zwave, just on/off

Hi, would it be possible to remove the word "Kg" being displayed on the HX711?
If that's a load cell, try #diy-archived
If that's something else, what the heck is it?
Yes it is a loadcell, ill jump in diy then. Although its more of a visual thing in lovelace
Well, if it's a display thing, that's done through template sensors
Your question was pretty damn vague 😉
Sorry abou that 😅
Hey
I might wanna use these switches in my home but do I need to connect lights to them or can I configure them to just switch the lights on and off and just hardwire the lights directly without a switch in between them.
I use the Conbee II and saw these switches are supported I only wanna know if I need to have a wire going to the switch and then the light or just the light and the switch sepperatly
Support isn't tied to the stick, but to the Zigbee software you're using
Kasa stuff is pretty good in my experience though in the past they've gotten a little persnickety about their API and etc
I'd happily buy another given the price point
Has anyone successfully been able to passthrough a Coral TPU to a ESXI 6.7 VM? I've been experimenting, and I even bought a PCI-E USB Hub to passthorugh, it all works - But the TPU refuses to correctly come up in the VM. I can see it listed in devices with lsusb - but nothing can actually utilize it.
https://www.woot.com/offers/dell-optiplex-7050-micro-intel-i7-desktop-17?ref=mwj_sh_cp_2_bs
Just bought on one these to run my HA and blue iris on!
Anybody use one of these?
I have a Google speaker which integrates with my HA via NubaCasa account. Google speaker uses WiFi. I don't think the speaker communicates directly with R Pi, but commands are passed via the cloud, from speaker to Google to HA. Getting music or weather on the Google speaker has nothing to do with my HA system, it's just Google.
Gotcha, I'll try it out with the subscription
Does a RPI4B have a limit of devices connected to it before it begins to bog down? I'm not really doing anything but controling lights and sockets. I'm thinking of moving away from my i7-6700t
I run 26 odd containers in kubernetes node on rpi4b. So running ha, esphome to control lights and sockets wouldn't even break sweat
If two gang switch connect only one key by wire, device is powered, so i will be able to set second key for whatever i want? Do i get it correct? 🙂
Hey there,
I have a quick question for you all (and I hope here is the right place to ask it. If not, I'm sorry for that):
Is there a good Zigbee-based radiator thermostat which integrates with HomeAssistant?
If not, is there one over WLAN?
I do not want a third-party bridge or app or whatever, I want HomeAssistant to be my only Hub/Gateway. (I already have a Zigbee-USB-Stick and Zigbee2MQTT, so that won't be a problem.)
Hi Guys I'm looking for ideas about how to read the gauge of my gas tank and integrate it with HA any suggestions ? Thanks
What kind of gauge? Is it a dial, digital display, ?
I have a radio I bought from tubes zb store a whole back, what kind of computer/raspberry pi should I have to run it with ZigBee2mqtt
it's a Rochester gauges
(remote ready)
it need to be cleaned :p
#zigbee-archived can help there
Looks like an image processing "challenge", I don't know how to solve it myself, but maybe somebody else will
Hey
Can someone please help me add denon reciever volume control to google home with home assistant
I can't seem to find anything on the internet
That'd be done through #integrations-archived
You'll need to integrate the receiver with HA, and then expose that to Google using the Google Assistant or Nabu Casa cloud integrations
sorry
Thank you for that information
hi! unfortunately I have external parts of home automations on 433MHz... (and no, I cannot exchange them) do you know any kind of device prepared for HA ? like zigbee dongles ?
simplifying your links... there isn't?
ok you got me, there are but not so easy to even install, as usb dongle is more like plug and play for me
this is the catch, I don't know, I cannot disassemble these parts of home...
Well, the good news is there's no security on RF433, so you don't have to dismantle things
https://www.hackster.io/markushaack/smart-home-433mhz-rf-mqtt-gateway-with-some-extras-bbb1ca and other solutions will allow you to see if you get get traffic
Hey folks, hoping somebody can provide a bit of expertise. I have a shelly1 hooked up to my pool light. It's been working fine-ish. The switch is quite far from my router and its slow and sometimes unavailable for a few seconds at a time. I decided to flash it with tasmota and I'm surprised its been performing much better. But the other day I used the physical light switch for the pool light, and now the Shelly1 won't get back on the network. What's the likelyhood it just died? It seems like a strange coincidence. Are they less reliable after flashing tasmota?
Are coral chips just sold out for the foreseeable future? I'm still not seeing any of the inventory being replenished.
Anybody has ab idea for a small display which i could use to out inside a wall or on top of it?😋
where should you put an outdoor hygrometer to get as accurate temps/humidity as possible while not destroying them? Guess most dont want be exposed to rain. I mean, if you put it under any type of shelter, then obviously you are getting shaded temperatures, etc
They occasionally pop up from what I’ve seen & heard, but otherwise yes. Sold out for a while
Mount a tablet on the wall, and use that? Unless you want to use it for something else
Yeah that is a good idea.. i thoughtof putting a small cheap screen in a room, which only shows the functios which are available for that room 😋
Anyone got a good recommendation for power monitoring? Needs to be Schuko, and I want voltage+current measurements, and power factor would be 👌 too. WiFi and Zigbee are both fine, and it would be a nice bonus if it didn't have a relay in it so I don't accidentally somehow turn it off, but I know that's gonna be a rarity.
With the latter, can easily set up an automation to turn it back on as soon as it switches off or just hide the switch from the front end
Oof, thanks for letting me know. I was interested in starting to experiment with presence detection but looks like that's on hold for a while. Shame.
anybody had any luck getting portisch to work on the sonoff rf bridgr 2.2
Follow the Facebook group. There’s a post once a week when they become available. Moments later they are sold out again. You just gotta jump on them when they’re available.
Definitely get you a cheap tablet. Preferably an android. Either load the app or use fully kiosk browser.
Oof, that's rough for me. I haven't had a Facebook in years.
Thanks for the heads up though.
Yeah I’m not even allowed to post on Facebook anymore but that’s where the pop up deals get posted. It’s all I use it for anymore.
Fair enough
Hi, Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm looking to add indirect lighting to my living room as the primary light source. My plan is to use a 24V RGB+CCT led strip. I also want to be able to sync the lights to music. Currently I'm already using homeassistant + zigbee for my smart home setup. Does anyone here have experience with indirect lighting and can give me some tips? Any opinions about Gledopto zigbee controllers?
I've got those controllers, both the Zigbee 1.2 and 3.0 versions - they work fine
given the Espressif ESP32-C3-DevKitM-1 is announced in the Matter workshop requirements, (but it costing 20E shipping..) would other devices do too? Unfamiliar with ESP hardware, I have no clue what to look out for..
Hi everyone, I’m looking for a small UPS for my HA machine. The latter is a NUC7i5 currently powered by a 65W plug (19V, 3.43A). My observations seems to indicate that it rarely exceed 0.6A under normal usage but I wonder if you have the same observations.
I find the Eaton 3S Mini which can handle 19V but maximum 1.9A (36W). Do you think it can keep the NUC online, or should I go with a bigger model?
any idea what would be the minimum usb version that could run zigbee modules? i have usb1.1 port inside my intel nuc and appropriate adapter with header to connecto to something - i think about moving HA there and getting new zigbee module 🙂
Are you sure it’s 1.1 and not 2? How old is the nuc
In theory other there are a few other devkits that could be made to work. However, you would not be able to follow along as easily in the workshop.
Nabu Casa have taken a few of matter example apps (which have ESP32 versions) configured them for this devkit (out of the several that the example supports), and have created an an easy to use web page to enable you you load the firmware via a web-browser using esp-web-tools. In theory if you buy one of the other devkits, compile the example yourself, and load the firmware via another method (like the esp web flasher: https://nabucasa.github.io/esp-web-flasher/), it should work perhaps with very minor tweaks to the rest of the process, but the team won't have actually tested that.
That said, the announcement has been updated to show a source within Germany that offers it for 16,99 €, plus 5 for shipping (the site does not seem immediately clear if they ship to the rest of the EU, or what the shipping would be in that case, would probably indicate during checkout, but I don't know any EU address to test with). And a few other EU sources were mentioned in the comments.
thanks, I ordered the Reichelt one, as mentioned in the Blog, and hope to follow along 😉 Unfamiliar with ESPHome yet, I am eager to learn what's in store, both Matter And ESPHome.
Hi, can anyone suggest LUX sensor for HA ? I want to calculate how many sunny days I have, because in future (3-5y) I want to buy solar panels. Is there any sensor which will give more parameters which I can use in photovoltaic calculations ?
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in

Personally, I have had good experience with those things, but the HUE motion sensor is also good.
or check: https://globalsolaratlas.info/map or https://photovoltaic-software.com/principle-ressources/how-get-solar-radiation-data-world-free ofc there are many more 😉
thanks
Anyone tried controlling a ceiling fan with a dimmable light module? I can't seem to find any Zigbee ceiling fan specific controllers.
That sounds like a bad idea. Electronic dimmers usually prefer resistive loads, and a fan is almost entirely inductive.
Best case, your module breaks.
Worst case, significantly worse stuff happen to your fan and/or house.
dimmers that clip the trailing edge can theoretically work. however, a light dimmer might let you set it so low that the fan would not start. or higher than the fan is rated to spin
Is there anything able to automate a (gas) fireplace that works with home assistant? Saw some relays that work with alexa, unsure if they will connect to hass. I'm in the us, any budget or protocol is fine as long as it works locally
I have an Eve energy smart plug that I like but it's thread based and I can't get it to work with HA. The only reason I have it is to monitor usage on my cat box and turn on the room exhaust fan. Anyone have an alternative they would recommend?

Looking for a smart hose faucet (on/off functionality).
- location - USA
- budget - $100
- Zwave or Zibee, wifi last if that is the only option
- integration with Home Assistant.
Looking for an energy monitoring smart outlet.
- Location: USA
- Budget: ¯_(ツ)_/¯
- WiFi is good, otherwise zigbee and a recommended dongle for an intel NUC running Ubuntu 2020.04 and HA docker
- ability to run automations on power usage increase, in HA
i assume both of you have looked through https://zigbee.blakadder.com/ for zigbee devices?
With that ESP32-C3-DevKitM-1, has anyone heard of a M.2 variant in the works? It would fit beautifully in a NUC or SFFPC for an NVR/HA box
Hello,
I need some help to find cameras for security purpose. If some of you can help me with your experience, I would be very grateful.
I am searching for WIFI cameras, some for indoor and others for outdoor use. I don't want to pay for a monthly subscription service, I need to have person detection (not just motion detection) and I would like to have cameras that do this by themselves, without the need of an external AI solution like frigate.
I'm from France, and for the budget the lower will be the best, and I can spend up to about 100 euros for each one
I want, from Home Assistant :
- to be able to enable/disable person detection (not just motion detection)
- to be able to receive person detection events (not just motion detection)
- and eventually to be able to watch the stream
Did someone know a device that can fit my needs?
For example, I found the "Reolink Argus 3" ("Pro" or not, i don't know the difference), did some of you have one and can say if its a good choice and if it does all of what I need please ?
I was yesterday doing the hardware hack to my Aqara motion sensors, but it only really worked in 1 out of 3. I've notice that the 2 didn't work have a slightly different design in the plastic part that hides the chip, like it has little plastic legs, could it be that I got to newer versions and the hack isn't possible anymore?
got a link describing the hack?
sure
I used conductive glue instead of soldering though, but it works just fine
(for the one that works)
plastic shouldn't matter, but if they've changed the circuit then definitely that could be it
it's a hack, it's grounding (or pulling up) a test point
I see the circuit the same, but don't know if it could be something I'm not noticing
I hope anybody know some workaround, because I won't be able to use them with more than 1 minute of cooldown, these sensors are meant to control lights in a corridor
same on both sides?
the top side here doesn't really show anything
oh wow
https://mrdarrengriffin.com/hacking-the-xiaomi-aquara-motion-sensor-motion-timeout/ this explains what the hack is actually accomplishing, they're doing instant reset
do you have a multimeter?
if so, measure the resistance between the contact pin (inside the contact) and the test point that you shorted out
i'd measure both the one that works and the ones that doesn't
taking out any battery first if there is any
I'll give it a try later and see
funny thing is in the picture of the link you said, the plastic cover is the same as the ones that doesn't work for me
I hope it's just that I didn't add enough glue! 🤞
I'm still a newbie on electronics... do you mean to measure the resistance between the 2 pins soldered, or am I missing something?
yes, well glued in your case...
also verify you didn't get glue near the other pin
(measure resistance between pins perhaps)
sure!
if that would've been the case, is there a way I could remove it without damaging it?
depends on the glue, but i expect there would be a way or two
I'll check in a while and will let you know 🙂
ping me, busy at work 🙂
I'll have to check later, I'm having a busy day at work too
Looking for a temperature sensor 1°C of accuracy should be more than enough, just want to monitor a room and potentially turn on fans and/or ac as needed.
- Which country you're in: US
- What your budget is: up to $40 (hopefully much cheaper)
- What protocols you prefer: Wifi or zwave
- Any features you want humidity sensing would be great too
Battery or wired? For wired, DIY is one option that comes in cheap
I would actually prefer wired
Nodemcu or similar, your preferred temperature sensor and esphome would be the route I'd go in that case. Should be less than ten bucks depending on the availability of the stuff
I tried measuring the resistance and they look similar, between 10 and 12 both pcbs... I took a picture but I'm not allowed to upload things here for some reason, can I send it in a DM?
Not sure if it's visible in the photo, but I think the one that works has a thicker layer of glue
But if the resistance is the same, that wouldn't make much sense, right?
i know their not wifi or zwave but I would highly recommend the Xiaomi LYWSD03MMC (~10usd or less via aliexpress?), they work through BLE but all you need is an ESP32 (to act as a hub to receive BLE data) with ESPHome installed There's several youtube videos about how to flash it and get it setup. ESPHome ref: ( https://esphome.io/components/sensor/xiaomi_ble.html).. and it also has humidity
sure, but yeah if resistance is similar it shouldn't matter... hmm
I don't know if it has been the z2m update or HA or what, but now they don't detect movement at all 😦
sure but yeah if resistance is similar
how can I "make" under HomeAssistant OS?
I want to install the LiFePO4werer-Pi git files and I was able to do a git-clone and have the files, but I can't run the make command
that's not #hardware-archived related
and...you can't. HA OS isn't intended to be a development environment
Sorry, I am a total newbie both to HA and to Discord. Is there a better tag to ask the question? The UPS card requires their own app to be installed on the RPi. Maybe I'm better running the Supervised version of home assistant on top of Raspbian rather than the OS? I'm floundering here...
review the channel topics and start in #general-archived if you don't know where to start
There's a channel for #yellow-archived if you have questions about it.
Questions about a hardware device (not their #integrations-archived with HA, and not the thing that HA calls devices)? Someone might have the same device and be able to help you out! If you've got a Z-Wave or Zigbee devices, see #zwave-archived and #zigbee-archived, #cameras-archived for cameras, and #diy-archived for making your own stuff (or if you're asking about Tasmota or ESPHome).
If you have problems with the Blue or your installation see #installation-archived.
If you want to share images, use https://imgur.com/ or similar.
Please use https://www.codepile.net/ or https://paste.debian.net/ to share code or logs
Doing what you suggest would be an unsupported installation method
it sounds like you should just run a container installation of HA on whatever OS you want
OK, I was just looking for a simple UPS battery system for my RPi running HA OS, but it requires installing its own drivers to power the RPi up/down
then you're definitely using the wrong installation method if you need to do that
I had a perfectly good Insteon Hub integrated with Alexa until the company went out of business and it stopped working. Now I'm trying to recover with HA and Nabu Casa
Do you guys know of a high quality reed switch to be installed inside door/ door frame?
hi all, getting started with smart home stuff, loving home assistant so far. is there a recommended brand for smart switch that can replace an existing hard switch?
moes looks like they have something that combines both the switch, zigbee communications and electrical control but their website is partially broken regarding information. i can't find dimensions, the installation instructions which might answer questions link doesnt work,e tc
if yall were going to buy a router for your house today, which one would you buy and why?
if i felt like tinkering and being adventurous.. I would buy some kind of PC and install pfsense in it and get a wireless access point (more power, futureproof)
if not I would get a decent asus router that is supported by merlin's custom firmware (stable and feature rich)
that's just me of course..
Thanks!
I'll look until those
Just gathering knowledge right now
Still green in this world
what tinkerlevel? i got a NanoPI R2S running openwrt which i'm fairly happy with, wifi separate, but it's a bit low level... if you want to go pfsense route consider opnsense instead
i was running pfsense but ipv6 doesn't work on it since i don't have enterprise ipv6 (ie fully static prefix)
also some licensing issues and whatnot, so if i was to go that route again it'd be opnsense
im pretty green to this world, and have limited knowledge and expertise, but im pretty tech savy and quick to learn technical stuff.
ubiquiti has a fantastic entry->corporate series called unifi, they have great managament software, very easy to use but powerful and fast
cost is low
and they make some of the best access points around
They’re backordered everywhere, which is a real shame. But, you can pre-order them through some retailers (which I have done)
the dream machine is really cool, i have a USG + a few APs
ive had the USG for like 6 years, fantastic device
you can use it as is in the GUI, or dive into the config file if you are a network head
Hello! I am@new to all@of this and I am excited to learn everything I can on HA
I would like to know if I can use my nvidia jetson tx2 to run ha
I have a couple of WC115 fan switches that I would like to replace. It looks like the instruction manual says that this is a two wire switch. Will the Lutron caseta fan switch work with this?
Thank I'll check it out
What's the smallest motions sensor that works well with HA? I'm in the us, and need a small sensor to put under the kitchen cabinets, to turn on the led strips i have attached under them. Any budget/protocol is fine. Aqara/sonoff maybe?
Just setup my 2.5g poe switch. Now I'm looking for what are some of the good poe outdoor cameras that was not limited due to not using their app. Seems to be common
#cameras-archived can give you good advice, but the summary at https://docs.frigate.video/hardware/ is relevant whether you use Frigate or not
Frigates and home assistant on the same machine or splitted?
Trying to figure out what would work the best
Depends on your machine
Ill probably be getting an intel nuc
If it's powerful enough, no reason to run it on separate machines
Can someone recommend a resource for Zigbee/Zeewave hardware? Currently looking at using the Nortek Quickstick?
thanks so I could run unraid on the nuc then setup home assistant and frigates on it right
Sure
That's a terrible stick, don't 😉
Do see #zigbee-archived and #zwave-archived for recommendations on each though
(and in #zigbee-archived see the pinned messages there)
So, you recommend get a separate stick for each?
Looked through the resources there and don't see any comparisons or recommendations for either, just a list of "compatible" devices
@winged knoll what about a RK3399 box with 4gb ram and nvme? For frigate too
What about it?
It’s all about wiring
IMO I wouldn’t spend time on wiring motion sensors when I can change the battery once a year or more
Anything over 6 months I wouldn’t mind going with battery 🔋 pretty sure all devices comes with battery sensors to remind you to change them
Xiaomi motion sensors will typically go years between battery changes
Oh well I can understand now
I read that zigbee devices increase their range connecting to each other’s
Not sure about motion sensors
I'm happy with the Aqara ones. Small, don't look too bad and the battery lasts for ages
I can't say how long actually since I've never changed the battery on one yet in the few years I've had them
How's the range and field of vision?
range seems to be only a few meters, but I haven't really tested it. Mine are hidden around corners so I don't get false positives
That's just what I need
Awesome, thanks
Have some sensord from my thermostat, and the motion detection is too big for what I needed
400$ usd for a google coral sounds fair
Any workaround for frigate or anyone without a coral is just waiting for restock next year
anyone have any recommendations on a smart vent that integrates through nest? either directly with google or through HA? seems like keen and flair come up a lot
i had something similar.. maybe worth reading (https://community.hubitat.com/t/xiaomi-aqara-devices-pairing-keeping-them-connected/623) I also found it works both when the LQI is rather high
OT but a question about china shipped goods since I don't do that much:
Aqara and Bangood in this case. I have received a batch of 8 Aqara E1 door sensors. mf 3 of them were dead on arrival! No pairing led, nothing.
I did some battery contacts bending using small knife and cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and was able to bring them back to live.
Is this experience normal?
Just read the hubitat article about the aqara having issues with repeaters, righe before completing my order or innr plugs. Someone have experience with innr + aqara?
Hi,
I want my smart home data to remain local and Home Assistant promises to keep that data local.
However, in my smart home research, I read that Tasmoto firmware is installed on Wi-Fi smart home devices to stop them "phoning home". So my question is, how does Home Assistant stop WiFi smart home devices, without Tasmoto firmware, from "phoning home"?
Thank You.
Thank You.
Yes, have both. Got Innr bulbs and Aqara door sensors, motion sensors and buttons. Use it with a zzh stick and HASS OS running in a VM on a windows desktop. I have intermittent issues with some devices but it’s easily fixed with deleting the device and re adding it to zigbee2MQTT. But it’s been good for a few weeks now. Only issue I’ve had is finding a working blueprint for the aqara buttons
Quality of the Innr and Aqara devices is high. Up there with Philips stuff. But you pay a premium for them - im happy so far!
That’s not normal or typical. How do you troubleshoot?
Hi, I have two xiaomi illuminance sensor (GZCGQ01LM) but both of them show same value from the 1st connection to HA. Both of them are on different location, but illuminance value does not change . I´m using Conbee2 + ZHA integration for zigbee devices
https://i.imgur.com/sltsvra.png
they show value 3 576 020,5 lx
Try pairing them again and check the pinned blakadder link to verify they're supported with that combo.
yes, they are supported https://zigbee.blakadder.com/Xiaomi_GZCGQ01LM.html
removed, added, upgraded HA, restarted .. still same value
See the #zigbee-archived channel
Hi Guys, is there a device I could use to replace an analog bell? I just want to replace the actual chime of the doorbell, I already have a zigbee button to use on the the door but not a bell or chime, is there something like that?
Im not an native english speaker so its seems like im struggling finding the right device for it
I flashed openwrt on this thing thinking I would be able to use it to send TTs to it or mp3s as sounds, but I cant seem to do find a way to do anything there, most guides are in russian https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TiAgeg5P1T4/maxresdefault.jpg
It would have to show as a media_player in HA for that to work
Same answer as the last time you asked 😉
the thing was able to emit sounds with the app, but the app was not controllable on HA, had to flashing according to some forums
im not very good at discord, i know I asked before but cant find your previous reply
You can use the search function in the top right
@supple heath When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Use Shift + click on the Reply option, or click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).
Hello i m looking for a module that manage curtain and use zigbee and that can have a external switch that maybe use radio for exemple does that exist ?
There's lists of known working hardware pinned in #zigbee-archived
Sry i will check that
yeah but I cant even connect it to my HA
apparently I can download modules and mqtt stuff to it now that it has openwrt
this piece of hardware seems to be popular in russia
There's no MQTT media player though
crap
this might be an idiotic question, can I push an mqtt command to the thing and make it so that command plays media?
The MQTT command is easy, see the link I posted
What it can do on the device, you have the details to hand, and I don't
i know what it was able to do, i dont know what can I do with now lol
it seems to me, I have to install something on the openwrt os that it now runs
and somehow I need to connect it to my home assistant
perhaps and hopefully to push mqtt commands to it using mqtt
and all of those 3 steps are new to me
I feel like I should have flashed anything and perhaps should have bought something else for the doorbell
but i hate loosing hardware
yeah I managed to do this with a nest, but then it stops what is playing and it takes like 5 minutes to get spotify working on it again
Sonos is easier to work with IMO
https://github.com/jjlawren/sonos_cloud allows you to do TTS without interrupting the music
wait can I install a music player deamon on openwrt?
thats all I need!
haha i know google, i was asking to myself outloud, it looks like it can, thanks man!
grrrr About done with kasa plugs. several have gone "unavailable" again.
#zigbee-archived FTW
recommendation? I want power monitoring.
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
I can recommend you some great UK plugs, not so much for other countries
ha, well I guess there's that. I've looked at sonoff
You missed the not at all subtle hint, twice...
Third time lucky:
What country are you in?
eyeroll Isn't it obvious from the fact that 1) I can't take a hint, and 2) I think everyone who is awake at the same time lives where I do?
Illinois.
Ah yes, a resident of the country that confuses states with countries... 🇺🇸
has Illinois seceded from the union?
it's not the one I would have suspected would go first. That honor goes to Texas, Florida, or California
Illinois is the little California. Where they go, we will eventually go.
I don't confuse states with countries as much. But I do work with Austrians and have to remind them at the sheer size of the US. One guy wanted to drive from Florida to Las Vegas and thought he could do it in a day.
Some of our states are bigger than some countries 😉
To be fair, at the lower end of country sizes some cities are bigger than some countries
You are not wrong.
Also, I get dirty looks from them when I describe distance in time, not km. I live 75km from work, but that doesn't mean anything to most people (even in miles). But if I tell them I live 50 minutes from work, they understand. Unless they are from overseas.
To be fair, 75 km from work could be a huge range of travel times, that on motorway or high speed train is very different from that on twisty back roads
Oh, I agree. In Chicagoland going 10km can take 2 hours. I'm in rural Illinois so I can drive a lot faster.
I remember one time I drove into the middle of London - it took about the same time to drive the 100 miles or so to the outskirts of London as it did to then drive the rest of the way
Yep. Anywho, end of work day. later.
I understand the theory of driving 50 minutes to work, I don't really understand the why. ~45 minutes once every 3 weeks is enough for me 😂
@orchid jungle I'm also in the market for a power monitoring plug, I was looking at the Sonoff but don't really feel like doing the whole DIY flashing thing, so in looking for alternatives I've realized that Aqara has one and I already have a ton of Aqara stuff. I have no idea if it's any good mind you!
Better job, more money, better work environment, specific job advancement, and the like. I work IT now, and not a lot of jobs for that around where I live.
I thought that you could OTA flash now, as long as you create an account first?
I don't believe so, but there is an integration without flashing
oh, maybe? https://tasmota.github.io/docs/Sonoff-DIY/
Looking for some UK dual gang wall outlets that are ZigBee routers with energy monitoring.
Has anyone come across such a thing? I can find individual plugs
Does the Espressif ESP3-Pico-Mini-02 support matter?
I just got a raspberry pi 4 and run HA on a rpi3 atm. Is there a procedure i need to follow to move everything from the 3 to the 4 or isnit just a case of moving the sd card?
Hi, I'm building a device based on Raspberry Pi + USB camera, and I want it to:
- Initiate sending a still image to HA (And from there to notifications).
- Allow viewing live feed for the video.
My RPi is running a Python script with a Flask server.
Any tips on where to start?
anybody using zooz switches/dimmers and were able to make its scene control feature work?
is there a hardware button / device that can run scripts / automations on HA?
Well, yes but no
It's not the feature of the button/device to run scripts/automations - that's on HA
As long as you can integrate it then it'll work
do you own one? what kind?
I use Zigbee buttons, Xiaomi, Konke, Ikea, and more
i use ikea remote, works great
no hub needed? any other config to be done to work with HA?
ikea devices are ZigBee, so you would need a zigbee coordinator
There are three Zigbee options with Home Assistant (regardless of how you install it). These are:
deCONZ is relatively stable and mature with its own UI (and Discord server). It can run in an add-on, in a Docker container, or natively. Only the ConBee range of sticks and RaspBee GPIO boards are supported. Known working devices are documented, and how to request support for a new device is documented too (you can't add unsupported devices yourself).
zha is actively developed as part of Home Assistant Core, using the zigpy stack, the UI also being part of Home Assistant. The EmberZNet based sticks are recommended (though the HUSBZB-1 uses an older chipset), but there are other options. There is no list of supported devices, as any standards compliant device should work. Devices that require extra support are listed, and adding unsupported devices is documented.
Zigbee2MQTT is very actively developed and can run in an add-on, in a Docker container, and natively. As of 1.15 has a native UI, and it also uses MQTT for control and configuration. It supports mostly TI based sticks, with the recommended option being the [CC2652 based sticks](#zigbee-archived message). If you want to use an EmberZNet stick see this issue. The known working devices are well documented (which usually includes how to pair them so you don't have to find the manual), and adding unsupported devices is also documented.
nevermind, figured it out
Hello, do you think 36W would be enough to keep a NUC (NUC6i5) powered? I'm looking at the Eaton 3S mini UPS and wonder if it could keep my HA powered in case of power outage.
According to the notebookcheck review, yes
with HA you'll be closer to the idle end of the spectrum anyway
Thanks a lot, so I'll give it a go
Morning all. Hope this is the correct place to post this. I have bought Yuin Smart Plug with Energy Monitoring, WiFi Outlet Smart Sockets Alexa Accessories with Timing, Remote Control, Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT, TUYA Smart Plug Smart Life, No Hub Required,16A (4 Pack) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08JZ5JZTP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2KCA9Y9367G7HNWWGK2J?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and i am struggling to get total power into the HA energy dashboard. I can see total energy on the smart life app. But all I can get into HA is volts, amps and power. Is there anything I can do? Flash with another firmware perhaps? Thanks
#energy-archived can help with energy stuff
Cool thanks.
Anyone know is a atom 330 with 2gb ddr2 ram would be enough for a HA install with zigbee2mqtt and 40-50 zigbees and a couple of integretions?
Performance class... less than half the performance of a Pi4
It's probably going to be ok, but it's not going to be snappy
I'd guess it falls somewhere in the range of a Pi2 to a Pi3. If it's towards the higher end of that it'll be mostly ok.
Of course, the hardware it's in is almost certainly too old to run HAOS, which requires UEFI
hmm yeah ok maybe not the best option then
maybe i'll buy a new system with n6005 then 🙂
tnx for the help
Looking for a cheap preferably Poe camera to point at my serverrack. Any recommendations?
Looking for an chromecast audio reciever within a reasonable price. Can a pi run a chromecast audio stream?
anyone know why i cant get my lights into pairing mode? I flip the switch for 3 seconds on then off 5/10/10/20 times...... nothing happens...... my lights: https://www.wink.com/help/products/commercial-electric-smart-led-downlight/
i found some lights a while ago; it seems they moved off of amazon and on to shopify: https://www.nitebird.com/
however their return policy [https://www.nitebird.com/policies/refund-policy] seems like a copypasta, given how much is on https://www.google.com/search?q="like+perishable+goods+(such+as+food,+flowers,+or+plants)"
I'm pretty sure this gets asked over and over, from the searches i just did anyway, but I'm after a (UK) local polling smart lock for deadbolt multipoint, preferably with at least fingerprint unlock, better if NFC/android, BLE proximity.. seems like nothing exists with a local API, they're all cloud dependant?
Just got all my smart switches/dimmers delivered ready to be installed, doing an extension and the whole extension is getting smart switches/dimmers, went for these because they are work 100% dumb as well as smart, and they are WiFi, which I know some people hate, but I have all UniFi Networking gear, and never had a problem with WiFi stuff, and they were the cheapest I could find for switches that were dumb and smart
anyone got reccomendations for a way to get a 220V dryer on home assistant
i basically just want to know when its done, im thinking something like a smart current clamp
ive heard vibrate sensors are unreliable so i'd like to avoid those
I'm reasonably proficient in house wiring but I'm not an electrician or anything
@glad sinew im assuming your from the US?
Hey everyone, I'm from Romania.
I was looking for an alternative to the Philips Hue wall switch (https://www.philips-hue.com/en-us/p/hue-philips-hue-wall-switch-module-2-pack/046677571245#overview).
I read about shell and sonoff devices but I would want one that keeps the circuit open (always power to bulbs) but emits events that I can capture in HA when the physical switch is toggled.
#diy-archived is the channel you were looking for
You may also want to try the ESPHome and Tasmota Discords
I have a Roborock S7 failing to connect to a Xfinity router. Did a little back and forth with their tech support and they're telling me to downgrade the router firmware. Is this a known issue?
I'm wondering what the underlying problem is and if it's a problem with the router or the Roborock. Did a little research and it seems like it's the latter. I've also connected to the router no problem with plenty of other devices
a bit of random thought.. but is it anything to do with 5Ghz/2.4ghz networks? if you have a router that uses the same SSID for both it may struggle
They only connect to 2.4Ghz, yes. I was attempting to connect to the 2.4Ghz band my router offered
I was able to get it working with a spare travel router I use, but I don't want that as a permanent solution
I've wanted to get a separate router for a while now anyways since I'm just using the router that is packaged with my xfinity modem
So I think I'll be in the market for one soon
I have an ZWave+Zigbee dongle coming in the mail. I currently own a bunch of Hue bulbs. Should I wait for Inovelli Blue Series to come out? Or should I just get started with Reds
Bad news, you bought a stick nobody recommends
#zwave-archived can tell you all about Z-Wave though
Hey guys. I was hoping someone would be able to suggest a device that can control an AC unit via IR and could also be integrated with HA, ideally without cloud. I found some suggestions on HA forums, but most of the topics were quite old, so I was wondering what cool kids recommend these days. Thank you 🙂
Really? Nobody recommends? I found a lot of recommendations, but I understand things can change.
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/recommended-zigbee-zwave-dongles/140080
I didn't post in ZWave or Zigbee because this isn't a question for either specifically.
(ideally something hassle free that supports these devices out of the box without having to do strange stuff)
That joint stick is old, previous generation (and some) on both sides
Also, that thread started over 2 years ago - a lot changes in two years in technology
The latest comment is people saying that it's working for them.
anyway, that doesn't really answer my question about the Inovelli switches. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Works, but old, and as I said, #zwave-archived is the channel for asking about Z-Wave
Do you have a recommended stick?
But I'm not really asking about ZWave specifically.
Are the Inovelli range not Z-Wave?
The Reds are. The new Blue switches are Zigbee.
Then you get to pick whether you want to focus on building a Zigbee or Z-Wave mesh
Well, that's pretty much the root of my question. Which one should I pick? Or does it even matter if I've got a dongle that does both?
Given I already have Hue bulbs, should I wait for Blues (Zigbee) or get Reds (ZWave) now? Is there still an advantage keeping everything in the same system? Or does it not really matter, since everything is going to call back to Home Assistant one way or the other?
I could just keep Hue on Hue's Hub and just use ZWave for hardware going forward.
Well, it matters as you have to build the mesh
Zigbee is (often a lot) cheaper, but a little more challenging to get things working together
Z-Wave is expensive, but it will all work together
Why are the Inovelli Blue(Zigbee) switches more expensive then the Red(ZWave)?
sounds like it's a router issue rather than a vacuum one then.. might be worth turning off 5ghz on your router and trying it again? (that's my recommendation anyway) ..
That's actually what I did do. Turned off 5Ghz completely. It actually connected once I think after that then never again even while 5ghz was left off
Hi, did anyone manage to integrate a DSC alarm system on Home Assistant?
I have a two gang box in my master bedroom one for the light one for the fan, I was thinking of buying only one Kasa smart switch. If I go to Home Depot / Lowes and buy a two gang box that has one rectangle cut out and one switch cutout will the Kasa smart switch fit in it?
Looking for Router recommendations. In NA. Budget ~$150. Have a gigabit connection if that matters. Good integration with HA is a plus obv. but I'm not actually sure even what features I'd want to look for.
The only thing in particular I can think I'd want is something that could track devices (SNMP?), since right now I need to use nmap. But if there are other features you'd suggest I'm open to hearing what may be valuable.
I've found learning how to use pfsense very valuable, and provides a ton of control over the network. Would need just any linux box with two ethernet ports
Is pfsense just software though? I still need actual hardware
This is #hardware-archived after all 🙃
I used tomato and dd-wrt in the past
I've recommended this to a couple friends before, a bit more than 150 though
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G7H4M73?psc=1
I want to run home assistant docker image on my PC, with my radios located elsewhere and connected via ethernet. Is there a gateway device that can do zigbee, z-wave, and Bluetooth LE?
No, there's no single "gateway"
#zwave-archived : No, but you could put a stick on a Pi and run Z-Wave JS there
#zigbee-archived : Yes, buy one of Tube's excellent devices (https://www.tubeszb.com/shop/coordinators/2)
BLE: Never heard of one
Thanks... is it possible to run a Pi device with USB radios as a remote gateway? Does home assistant have a kind of chaining support?
For Z-Wave, yes, as I said
For Zigbee, it's complicated, #zigbee-archived can guide you there, but buy a network connected coordinator
For BLE... depends on what you're trying to do with BLE
Thanks... I'm not really sure about BLE... I would like to read humidity sensors but have not looked into it...
You're likely to find it easier to simply buy Zigbee ones
Sounds like it's much simpler to just run HA on a Pi device where I need the radios
Nah
If you need BLE there's likely other options, like https://esphome.io/#bluetooth-low-energy-ble
Remote Zigbee is trivial, and remote Z-Wave isn't exactly hard
thanks I'll read up on esphome.io.... what is a network connected coordinator?
It's a Zigbee coordinator (the "stick") that's got a network interface
So, plug it into your network somewhere convenient, point your #zigbee-archived stack at it, and go
ah, thanks very much
so i have a question: i've read that in order to connect to my switchbot btle devices, i have to have an ESP32 BTLE wifi device that extends its command range over MQTT. My question is what exactly do i aim for for this type of application and how would I go about implementing it?
Hey @wet canyon you don't seem to have an avatar set, which combined with your short handle means your messages appear to be part of the previous message. Please set an avatar.
Thanks
You can set one for just this server using the server profile
if i wanted an avatar i'd have one, i like this minimal aesthetic but i also understand your concern. this isn't the first time others have said something about this in other servers, so just to not step on toes i'll set one...i just don't know what to set(and is part of the reason i got rid of it altogether)
i think i have an idea
I get it, but it's a pain in the ass for everybody else
Somebody else went for something that's just a little darker than the default dark theme colour - enough to be clearly visible while still being minimal
you're currently asking me to use a nitro feature, which i don't have
in order to comply with your request i'd have to change my global avatar
Well... it's a little thing, to make it easier for everybody else
i would post a screenshot but that's not allowed in this server
Please use imgur or other image sharing web sites, and share the link here.
Image posting is blocked in most channels to discourage people from sharing text as images. Sharing text as images assumes that everybody sees the world as you do, which isn't the case. Some people are colour blind, or have visual impairment that means they can't make sense of an image of text.
so...you want me to pay for nitro to make it easier for people to read?
Or just set something that makes you visible
You know, be a decent member of the community?
you're the only one who has said anything to me about it though
and i never post here
this isn't the first time others have said something about this in other servers
here*
Also, if you never post here... clearly nobody will have said anything before
you're the first one
i dont want to get nitro
if that were a free feature i'd do it
but i can't
kinda affects my global appearance though
so i'd have to change my avatar for all servers so(the only one who has a problem) can see easier
just doesn't seem like a very balanced proposal
in other words
people have said something
and eventually they adapted
and forgot they had a problem
also
that's when i had no name at all
Well, I can at least fix that problem without you, and that may also make your posts stand out...
avatar color?
Nah, set you the longest nick Discord will allow
Now it'll be more obvious when you're posting, since you insist on making life difficult for others 😉
is it really such a massive deal that you couldn't just ask me what i'd prefer as my nick since i can't change it here?
You've been nothing but difficult ... but sure, what nice long nick would you like instead then?
how about SIGΣA
What part of long went whooshing past you?
your name is tinkerer, it's not hard to see...even with no avatar
how many syllables do people need to differentiate posts?
is it arbitrarily 40 characters?
so this isn't good enough for most people to see that it's somebody else? what are insinuating about others?
how about "Can You Read Now? (Σ³)"
you don't need nitro to set an avatar image
Hi, I would like to control my garage door with the actual best device (Shelly, Sonoff or another wifi module) compatible with Home Assistant.
Which one do you recommend ? Which add-on will be required ? I don't want a cloud solution but a local one.
As an alternative, which ZigBee device would you recommend under ZHA ?
Thanks in advance
Which one is locally available in your area? Online or offline?
Guys, Is it possible to install Home Assistant OS on a Qualcomm SC7180 ?
Just stumbled uppon this https://www.apcsilmic.com/products/dot-mini-pc?variant=42880178520313
could be the ideal solution for some clients
A quick glance at the supported hardware suggests not
ODroid, Pi (various), Tinkerboard, Generic PC, and VM
It "just" needs somebody willing to step up and support the platform
looking for smart plugs and switches which are small and flashable from a big box store like home depot. Moving my question to the esphome discord.
I'm looking for air quality monitors compatible with Home Assistant. In Canada, prefer Zigbee, but zwave is fine. Looking for CO2, CO, PM2.5 (if available), VOC.
#zigbee-archived has a pinned message with lists of working hardware
Need a recommendation for a smart bulb that has variable color temperature, can go really dim and is available in europe. I can go with either zigbee or bluetooth since I have really good signal for both.
Edit: also being able to be controlled completly locally is important
And I was wondering if there are any advantages with going with a smart ceiling lamp compared to just installing a smart bulb in my existing lamp
Hue are pretty much the gold standard there, at least for Zigbee
Any recommendation for a specific one? It's for a medium-sized bedroom (4x3.5m)
Also how well do they work with ZHA?
Looking for the best camera I could get that ticks my boxes, and those are.
- No Cloud, liek only Home Assistant connection, and Maybe also the Apple Secure Thing connection.
- A good quality video, at least 1080p but a sharp and detailed one
- The memory I have is around 200gb of space for 6 cameras
- They should be preferably battery operated and cargable through power bank or so
- Face detection
- Movement detection with zones
- Two way audio would be a nice extra
- No need for a local storage
- Night mode with good quality picture
- All the processing can be run on the Home Assistant, it should have the performance, it’s an M1 Mac Mini
pfsense as suggested or one of the asus routers supported by Asuswrt-Merlin (https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/) within the budget.. has a ASUSWRT integration
i think it depends on your bulb type and if you are looking for color temp etc .. i don't think there's multiple models with the same features? (maybe wrong) .. only heard good things in general about hue and compatibility with zigbee.. you might want to double check the pairing process though.
Isn't pfsense the software though?
I just started investigating, but it also sounds like pfsense doesn't handle wifi?
it's router software, not an AP
interesting
Yeah I dunno just seems like the consensus is to not do it
well, I guess you can try to use that
I'd probably go with dd-wrt
Or just whatever software came with the router
I was looking for hardware recommendations lol
yeah, pfSense itself is not a hardware recommendation
yeup
unless you buy one of their Netgate boxes
Yeah looking for an AP mainly though
I don't have too many wired devices. If I need more ports then i'll just get a switch
have any of you used any of these Air Conditioner controllers like Ciele Breez, Sensibo, or I guess just using Switchbot to control it?
Anyone managed to integrate an non smart wired alarm system to HA? Thanks!
Is there a bit of a crowd consensus on best non-cloud smart thermostat for forced air furnace?
Hey folks! I'm new here 🙂
I have HA running on a RPi3, and I'm trying to get a Raspbee II working. The hardware is installed, and I tweaked config.txt and uncommented these lines:
enable_uart=1
dtoverlay=miniuart-bt
After that, it's a bit of a mystery though. The docs at https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/deconz have a nice "install" button, which installs the integration. That asks for a hostname and port, though, so it seems to not install deCONZ itself but just some gateway. I'm guessing I also need to install deCONZ itself somehow, but I can't find docs on how to do that on HA.
How did you install HA?
If you have HAOS then you can use #add-ons-archived
If you don't you just follow deCONZ's own docs, though I'd suggest you use ZHA instead
@winged knoll I use HAOS indeed
I don't care much about which addon I use exactly, as long as I can use my zigbee devices
I'll pop over to #add-ons-archived then, to ask around there
ZHA is IMO better for you, and it's native to HA
Hey all, I haven't looked into HA in about 8 years so starting fresh here. Are there any serious drawbacks to committing to a 100% zigbee ecosystem? Are there any "...foo thing is crap on everything but z-wave" situations. My two top use cases are exterior door locks and fan control (both dimming and speed).
It's not about the protocol, it's about the brand. Some brands are generally good, or junk, regardless
For instance, avoid Tuya, and be careful with Sonoff
What's the safe bet - USB dongle on raspberry pi or some kind of ip->zigbee bridge for the first hop
either is fine from my standpoint
I'd buy one of https://www.tubeszb.com/shop/coordinators/2 if you want a network based bridge
Way better than using a Pi
Can anyone recommend a good indoor camera for baby monitoring? I'd highly prefer a local only mode (LAN)
not cloud
How so? I have a dongle on my pi4 and it seems ok. is it faster/more responsive?
ah, i bet it doesn't reset when you reboot the pi4
That and if you already have a Pi, plugging a dongle into the Pi is one thing
Buying a toy to use as your Zigbee hub... not so good
yes, but my thought was building/buying a pc to run pfsense + Access point.. (so hardware).. if you are after a normal router get an asus.. or use a dd-wrt router as you suggested 🙂
Yeah I don't think I need a dedicated computer for it since it's a small apartment network. A single AP is definitely enough. Though pfsense does sound nice
But yeah looking at TP-Link and Asus and maybe leaning towards the latter
Are there any good zigbee fan controllers?
Seeing people talk smack. Should I just grab caseta kit?
i have an RM4 Pro IR/RF blaster. if your fan has a remote it will definitely work - no zigbee or wifi needed. of course you can't read the State of your fan, but if that's not important, it's a much simpler setup
I'm about to buy new fans but none of the fans in the size and style I want have remotes
I really want to be able to set brightness and speed both
if you just want remotes, it's WAY cheaper to just use an IR or RF blaster that works with home assistant. If you fan has a remote and has buttons for the things you want it to do, my solution is probably the cheapest
No remote capability afaik unless there is a generic vendor module that fits that model that isn't advertised
if you are handy/DIY, you could add some smart relays into your fan. i think this is what you were originally looking for, right?
you can use Shelly smart relays to close a circuit on the fan remotely via Wifi
or get a MIMO device for soldering many control circuits (fan speeds, light settings, etc)
but your best bet is to find a fan that comes with a remote.
I spent like 3 hrs yesterday looking for a normal fan 44 in or smaller that had traditional styling
and none have a remote?
really not convinced here. i have had no issues in 3 years with my pi4, zigbee dongle, SD card or power. what am i missing?
@twilit relic When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Use Shift + click on the Reply option, or click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).
Well, maybe you got lucky, but a shed load of people get dead SD cards, issues with power, etc
Anyway, I don't care if you're convinced or not. The question was asked, and I answered it... you do you
Nah. I pulled a tape measure and I think I can go up to a 48 total span without it looking funny here so I think thay will open up some options for me
I just feel like i'm missing out on some magical stuff whenever you bad talk rPi setups, haha. Also thanks for the note about replies -- I didn't realize you could disable pings.
Aquara E1 Roller Blind not working
The topic states the problem, I’m a HA user since like three days, but I just can’t get that thing to work, I’ve set manually all the borders, the right direction, they go fully down sometimes after I press and move any possible toggle in Home Assistant…
How are you integrating it in HA? With their hub, or with one of the #zigbee-archived integrations?
Anyone using the honeywell t6 lyric? Got a question about the programming via zwave vs on the device directly
Can anyone recommend a USB Bluetooth dongle for presence detection on a VMWare/Intel install of HA? I currently have this and it's totally crap. It says I'm not home more than it thinks I'm here. VMWare says it's an "Intel 0x07dc" https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0953XM1ZH
Bluetooth presence detection used to work great on my RPi
there's a tp link bluetooth dongle that I saw is recommended by home assistant
Thank you. Needless to say, I don't recommend the one I have if anyone is looking
Do you recall where you saw it please? I'd like to check I'm buying the right thing
Hi all, sorry for a bit impudent question but could you please advise a cheap wifi camera for HA. I do not have direct internet access to my HA, therefore I want to set up next:
- when sensor triggered > send a screenshot to telegram messenger
- on-demand connect directly to the camera and stream
is it possible? I had few Xiaomi cameras but could not add them to HA 😦
I want to have the possibility to put it somewhere unexpected, under the sofa or on the cupboard. The first reason is that I have a cat and it usually triggers my motion sensors, the second case when I need to keep a "protection" in the basement or backyard or garage only.
it is cheaper to have two cameras instead of doing PoE in each room
https://itead.cc/product/sonoff-cam-slim-wi-fi-smart-security-camera/ apparently supports RTSP
Sorry forgot to mention, I'm in EU. This sonoff requires a subscription for almost everything including RTSP
Interesting, the review I read said nothing about that
【RTSP Settings】 With eWeLink Camera Plan(subscription sold separately), https://ewelink.cc/camera-plan/
Not really a shock, but disappointing
Subscriptions, subscriptions everywhere
@finite dock it might have been on the HA blog about Matter?
I would need multiple IR blasters for different rooms i presume or is 1 capable of being used in different rooms?
Hi guys I am running HA OS in Rpi4 4GB. It was running all well. But suddenly i don't if the recent version update caused it or no. But memory usage spiked after restarting or running the RPi4 for some time and it shoots to around 60% usage. The log book feels sluggish, and the whole HA stop responding after sometime. But there is no exact interval on when it caused. How can I find the cause for this? Is there any tool that finds out what is using the memory?
#installation-archived is the channel you wanted
What monitored alarm system integrates nicely with HA? Anything with an official integration? Currently owning a ring system, but kinda bummed by the price increase, so considering of options before investing into outdoor cameras as well. PS. I'm in usa
Hello all, I plan on installing two smart switches in my bedroom. One is wired to the ceiling fan light and one is wired to the ceiling fan blades. It is a traditional pull-chain fan. What do I need to be able to change the fan speed on the fan?
If your fans are RF, one can do most of the house. If your fans are IR, you will need multiple or you will need a blaster that allows extension sensors or child sensors (like the Harmony Hub)
Hi, i have a quick question about HA and what kind of machine to run it on. Today i run it in docker (un a ubuntu server) with nodered, mqtt, zigbee2mqtt and zwave2mqtt. I was thinking of moving theese containers to a laptop (that i got for free) since it can run on battery and seperate it from my server that sometimes have to reboot. Any thoughts on this?
it is a Lenovo ThinkBook 13s G2 13,3"
Intel Core i7 (11. gen) 1165G7 / 2.8 GHz
8 GB RAM and a nvme ssd
It has windows now, but i was thinking of running ubuntu on it, I run server edition on my main server, maybe i should run a version with desktop on this? what do you think?
Desktop?
Hell no
Ubuntu... also hell no
If you want HAOS and add-ons, use Proxmox
If you don't, just use Debian
ahh! that is a good idea!
can i just transfer my containers or do i have to start from scratch?
backup of the container data, yes
And if you're using Docker Compose, you have a backup of the container configs
If you're not using Compose, you should be
i have a compose of my hass stack, yes
Then you have everything you need
didn't use compose when i first set it up, but found a script to generate it phew!
thanks for the help! 🙂
man this sensibo thing is trash
I've got one - works ok for my AC. what's the issue?
Anyone got a recommendation for tubular motors that do venetian blinds???? I currently have 433Mhz Dooyas that link thru a broadlink pro but the dont give positional info so they only go open or closed and I really want anywhere between 10-100%

Hi,
I have tried setting HA up on Synology (via docker) and on an old PC via Oracle Virtual box. In both cases, I was in for some nasty surprises. The docker option has poor support for addons, which I need whereas the Virtual Box is a somewhat complex solution to manage. What is the best, most manageble, safest and most stable hardware for running HA at a reasonable cost if I want to have some addons (in particular Google Assistant and ESPHome) and as well?
If you can find a second hand laptop from the last decade or so that covers that then you're golden
Good morning everyone! Just have a quick question related with the upcoming Matter workshop - Is the Espressif ESP32-C3-DevKitM-1 needed even if I have HomeAssistant running on a RPI4?
I'm in an older house and I have a few bulbs that will pulsate due to some energy inconsistency I think. They are on dimmer switches. I replaced some of the dimmers with newer switches which fixed a few of them but there are still some that are really bad. In particular, the one in my bedroom flickers if it gets too dim on a warm temperature. It's a ceiling fan fixture with 3 sockets and I can't even use all 3. If I put in more than 1 it flickers no matter what and 3 is even worse. Is anyone familiar with this kind of problem?
Would swapping out the switches to completely non-dimmable ones fix the issue?
welp. I got halfway there. Ikea doesn't like making things easy apparently. I got the remote button for my new blinds paired but the actual button part doesn't show up on ZHA. Just diagnostic and ID elements.

Hi
Hello
Are you okay?
It wasn't you I replied to, was it?
It was @soft fog who seems to be going on a tagging spree...
It' my friend, so technically yes it was
Dear IKEA, why must you make things unnecessarily complicated?
I have spoken.
Hey @tacit pilot I had a similar issue - by any chance have you tried using bulbs of higher wattage? (I assume that the bulbs you are using are actually )
I bought one Tradfri bulb, my setup reset once, and the bulb bricked.
returning it, and never using ikea smart stuff again
the red was disappointing as well
guess ima have to shell the dollars for the HUE bulbs
Hm I actually do have some with higher wattage in my office and they're a little better though they do flicker a little from time to time. They're 100W and the others are 60W
Did 100W bulbs fix the issue for you?
Wiz 3 packs of 100w equivalent RGB bulbs are $19 each, work great.
@green vergehttps://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/740658186800857219/970788085220671498/IMG_20220421_213758.jpg
I know this might be a funny ask but i'm looking for a a19 bulb that can be brought down to dim as possible my Sengled seem to stop at 10%
Would this be able to run Home Assistant ? https://ibb.co/ns1K0gF
Anyone got the new aqara FP1? Any idea how to increase the refresh rate of the presence sensor? So far it took like 2 mins to change from “on” to “off”
oh I have 3x60W equivalent so they may consume 10W each
Hello everyone. The nice weather is coming. The pool is mounted. Does anyone has a nice solution for pool thermometer. Below 100 euros and for eu market?
I have zwave, zigbee, wifi, some eve Bluetooth with extender (but I am not happy about those)
wow IKEA with a swing and a miss. These blackout blinds have pretty bad light bleed up top...
Alright. I massively screwed up my zigbee network with my conbee ii. Seemed like everywhere I turned I was creating more issues sooo I just flashed my micro SD and I’m starting fresh and now when attempting to run ZHA it says “failed to probe usb” and I’m losing it lol
could any one recommend a reliable water/moisture detector ?standalone preferable
Hi 👋!
I'd like to get into the HUE ecosystem with 2 outdoor lamps. Ihave not used it ever and don't plan to buy much more than ~6 bulbs/lamps ever 💡.
Can someone give me the elevator pitch of what I need to make it controllable from HA? Do I need a Hue bridge, a dongle or an ESPHome thingy or nothing at all maybe?
Or is there even a better alternative (Europe/Austria) to Hue?
You can use the Hue hub, or you can use ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT and your choice of #zigbee-archived coordinator
Hi all, I am trying to get this display going (St7789 not version v) with an ESP32 and Esphome, however I am not understanding, what the MOSI and CLK pin is, my display doesnt seem to have it and the code appears to require it. Have I done something stupid?
@frigid quartz ESPHome is a system to control your ESP8266/ESP32, with a native integration for Home Assistant.
You can find their documentation here, and get help with ESPHome itself here in the #diy-archived channel (#integrations-archived for the Home Assistant side integration with it). They also have their own Discord server too.
Is there some air quality sensors you can hook up with HA?
Those that measure PM2.5, VOC, HCHO and other things like that.
Something that requires no hassle is preferrable but not a must. I am okay with hooking it up to esp or anything.
If there's nothing like that I'll probably ask #diy-archived about good sensors.
Hi, I’m new to IoT and HA in general. Been looking into making my old air conditioner a little smarter by controlling its power for on/off purposes using a Z-wave device and a pi 4. Is this something that is commonly done for old devices or is there a better approach? Thanks for your patience
Hello All I'm new to this Discord Channel but I figured I would check it out and see if I could get a few ideas on products to purchase. I decided I wanted to use Home Assistant as my main home automation system. Now I'm looking into different products. Home Security systems & cameras is the one I'm stuck on. Arlo, Nest seem like good options but fairly pricey. I was wanting to find a system with a keypad on entry and one that can contact the authorities if there is a problem. I'm not sure if there is a DIY option that would be a good choice.
For good cameras avoid cloud stuff and only buy things that support ONVIF or RTSP - the advice at https://docs.frigate.video/hardware/ is solid
Hey friends 🙂 Does anyone know of any UK smart light switches for use with smart bulbs? My thinking is that because I am using smart bulbs, it just needs to be a switch that leaves the fixture powered 24/7 but when the switch is used it sends a toggle command through home assistant to control the bulb? I've not had much luck finding anything like this, mostly I can only find switches or relays that control the power to the bulb to make dumb bulbs smart
You can configure Shelly devices to just send the command but leave the power going through. The other option is to cover or remove the light switch and put a button over it using ZigBee or similar
Anyone know of a smart, battery powered LED puck or similar?
I only need it to be turned on for a few seconds at a time.
You could possibly #diy-archived something with WLED, but that kind of thing tends not to do so well with battery life
I was wondering if anybody here is using smart smoke alarms that use zigbee? I am using some from "Heiman" (may I post links in here?) but my problem is that I quite often get a false alarm in home-assistant.
It's not the smoke-detectors that make a noice... they stay silent... but at least they seem to send some kind of signal to home-assistant which then thinks there is smoke and notifies me...
how would i debug that problem? I don't really know where to start...
Start with ... what is it that "notifies my"?
@winged knoll sorry... typo... notifies me... so i quite often get notifications about smoke... when the sensor does not beep or do anything... but it seems it's sending something to home-assistant
as i said... the smoke-sensor is using zigbee... i have a conbee stick and deconz running
i expose my sensor via homekit (iOS) and I get notifications there...
but also in home-assistant the sensor shows as "smoke detected"
Then #zigbee-archived can help you, though if it's being reported in deCONZ then you probably want to start with their Discord
deCONZ by dresden elektronik is a software that communicates with ConBee/RaspBee Zigbee gateways and exposes Zigbee devices that are connected to the gateway. Our #zigbee-archived channel is a good place to ask about using it with Home Assistant, but they also have their own Discord server.
good idea... i'll head over to their discord and ask there... thx
Hi! I'm planning my smart home setup for a new build, around 100m2, so not a very large home, single story. Anyone did a full ikea setup? I'm kinda thinking of going all out with Tradfri stuff, use all tradfri lightbulbs with the tradfri remote on the wall instead of regular wall switches.
I would still wire in a normal light switch, but it won't be connected, i would cover the junction box in the wall and mount the tradfri remote on top of it. So later if for some reason i need to do it, a regualar switch can be hooked up easily.
The tradfri remote is actually cheaper than a better quality regular light switch. So seems like a good idea, but i'm open to suggestions.
Downside is that i would have to replace batteries relatively frequently, upside is that i can have color changing bulbs, i can place my switches anywhere i want and overall its cheaper than a dimmable bulb + smart switch.
Where are you building? For a new build in Europe I'd go for KNX again. Cost-wise another league, but it can do lot more than controlling light and doesn't have to be done full-blown right away. And you don't need to think about a fallback-plan.
If you do some work yourself (like pulling cables, parametrizing the system, etc.) you can cut some costs compared to a professional-done installation.
I'm in europe and here the tradfri stuff is pretty cheap, for example the styrbar remote is like 7EUR
So yeah, cost is an important factor since every building material is crazy expensive, i'm way above my budget already, so trying to save as much as i can. And based on my calculations, the Styrbar is actuall cheaper than a regular wall switch even.
I’m trying to figure out a DIY security system to use. I think I’m down between Simplisafe and Abode. I’m looking for a system that I can set up without cameras and then use another camera option such as the ones you suggested above. I would like a system that I can pay for monthly monitoring and lastly use a cellular calling system in case the power or internet connection has been cut. Obviously I also want it to work with Home Assistant. It appears as though Abode is used more often with Home Assistant than Simplisafe when I look at the Home Assistant analytics.
Anyone have any ideas on good solutions I should look into other than Abode or Simplisafe? Also if you have a preference on one or the other above feel free to let me know I’m open for suggestions. Thanks
Also is it possible to get 2 way audio to work on some of the cameras? That seems to be an issue with Home Assistant and some Doorbell cameras
Does anyone know of a way to download the Firmware for Sengled light bulbs?
I got some Shelly S1, what is the most stable firmware to use ? Is there pro/con for one or another ?
The latest is fine.
#cameras-archived can tell you about cameras and audio, but AFAIK pretty much HA doesn't do camera audio
Universal IR Remote on Zigbee
Could I run the full home assistant OS on this? https://ibb.co/ns1K0gF
It was released in 2011 I think
