Getting less worried about this AWS exam I'm sitting tomorrow after sitting a couple of practise exams. Scoring in the mid to high 80's and the pass mark is 70% partyblobcatparrot

#

Was also worried about the length of the exam (140 minutes) but the practise ones have only taken 25 minutes each ๐Ÿ˜‚

deft pewter
#

Haha, yeah. Stroll out right as everyone else is getting warmed up.

clever mortar
#

I've done that ablobgrimace

deft pewter
#

I used to hate exams at school when you're in a huge hall and have to stay there until the end. Love them as an adult when you can just walk out when you're done.

clever mortar
#

Yup, I feel bad for others, but not bad enough to just sit for ages

deft pewter
#

This shouldn't be too bad, as it's multiple choice. The last exam I sat was for my degree... 3 hours long, pen and paper... for programming ๐Ÿคข

#

Actually had to do handwritten code.

#

Fortunately, the kind folk at Starbucks gave me a 5-shot Americano...

clever mortar
#

Multiple choice are my favourite - I can blast through those at scary speeds ablobjoy

deft pewter
clever mortar
#

I once did a 90 minute multiple choice exam in about 7 minutes... terrified the instructor when I walked out at that point since he thought it meant it was too hard

#

Nope, I'm done and I double checked the tricky ones

#

It was then I admitted that I can speed read, and that I learned to work on the answer while reading - so if I saw the answer I'd just pick it and move on. If I didn't I'd mark it and come back to it.

#

That approach means I'd blast through the bulk as fast as I can read, do a second pass that I'd often pick an answer for almost all the rest, and then just have to actually think about a few

deft pewter
#

If I didn't I'd mark it and come back to it
I think a lot of people forget this is an option. Don't waste time struggling on anything on the first pass.

clever mortar
#

Yup, it's a thing I keep reminding my son about when it's exam time - do everything you can answer right off, and then if you run out of time you have at least something

deft pewter
#

Indeed. Not reading all the questions means you're potentially throwing away free marks.

clever mortar
#

You mean all the times that they ask two related questions, that provide hints to the other question ๐Ÿ˜„

deft pewter
#

It's great that you shared that with your son... scary that teachers don't seem to ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

clever mortar
#

I'm sure they do, but I'm sure they get a deluge in class

deft pewter
#

I don't remember ever being taught that as a strategy. Just something that made sense.

clever mortar
#

To be honest, so few places teach problem solving as a skill

deft pewter
#

Yup. Just teaching to the test.

clever mortar
#

Which I get, since the school is going to be assessed on the pass rate facepalm

deft pewter
#

Yeah. Not the schools' fault, it's just a crappy system.

#

Not that I have any ideas for a better one ๐Ÿ˜…

clever mortar
#

Life skills as a class would be a smart approach

#

Teach people to think, to budget, to run a house, know how to judge a contractor's ability, etc

young sigil
#

First year of high school we were given a test exam, told to read the whole thing first then begin. The last question was an instruction not to answer any questions for full marks.

#

Very few people got full marks.

quartz hawk
#

i got that test 30 odd years ago, my 9yo daughter got the same thing this year. i enjoyed that it was still doing the rounds.

deft pewter
#

Yeah, there's a version of it going around social media quite often. Has a load of silly tasks, then the last one is to just write your name on the paper to pass.

low harness
#

I got a really stupid version of that once Read all questions before starting 1: [Do this] 2: [Do that] 3: [...etc...] 4: After reading all questions, sign your name at the top and hand in the sheet
What that tells you to do is read all questions, do all the things then read it again, sign your name and hand it in.

Yeah, just sucks when the only method of local-to-local control is Homekit ๐Ÿคข

#

My thermostat is like that. You either go through the cloud API, or have HomeAssistant talk to it locally using Homekit

But for whatever reason, Homekit is super unreliable on that thermostat, and it disconnects and/or stops updating sensors on a regular basis. The cloud API is actually waaaay more reliable.

i have home assistant pulling data from telldus live (the platform that is down) in this case. so it sucks:(

deft pewter

This is neat. Both the fact you can pipe directly to VS Code (even from within WSL2) and the format inference stuff: https://twitter.com/DennisCode/status/1437475352486420483

With the latest version of @code, piping output to the editor with "| code -" also does automatic syntax inference ๐Ÿคฏ

If you cURL some JSON into it, it will automatically apply JSON syntax formatting!

Special thanks to @TylerLeonhardt for the heads-up on this! https://t.co/jjaMkXLx40

I am excited , for my first automation. I have a motion sensor and I am going to be putting in the shower/bathtub room [there is a pocket door on each side of this room that leads to a 1/2 for bedroom 1 & 2.

Going to detect the lack of motion and turn off the light in the tub area.

Hello

tired temple
#

What are the odds that home assistant will more and more disappear behind a paywall? I heard something about esphome that was bought by nabu casa. Im afraid that the founder of HA is smelling money and will put more and more behind a subscription.

#

i have a very bad feeling about this in the long run

low harness
#

Slim to none.

#

Esphome wasn't bought. It was handed over.

#

It was always strongly linked to Home Assistant, and when the maintainer wanted to take a step back, the Home Assistant organization felt it was a good fit for the rest of the related open source ecosystem and decided to accept responsibility for it.

tired temple
#

thats true. It fits nicely within home assistant

#

I just think its weird that someone makes a platform which is stated open source and advertises it as local outside the cloud. then starts a cloud business nabu casa and let people take a subscription for a cloud based solution within home assistant. The most logical explaination would be that Paul started the project never imagined it to become this big and starts thinking damn i need to make money out of this. And starts to think of ways to do this in home assistant. It wouldnt be the first open project that was sold or slowly turned behind a paywall where it died a slow death

dusky plank
#

mailchimp: hold my beerโ€ฆ

low harness
#

I can see why one would think so, and there's no shortage of bad examples of exactly what you say. Unfortunately, there are costs related with running a project like this even disregarding the full-time employees - such as hosting for the manual and forums.
The only reasonable alternative to voluntary donations (which cloud is, really) is advertisements. And I know which I prefer.

#

In the end, all we can do is believe. And I honestly do. I trust the people behind HA and Nabu Casa fully. (damn you autocorrect)

clear cairn
#

It's also completely optional. Just a way to have all of the hard stuff taken care of for you. Almost everything can be done yourself with a varying amount of difficulty. That difficulty also isn't imposed by the people behind ha rather companies like Google/Amazon not having a good local control option.

low harness
#

Besides, with the speed things are moving, something else would fill the void in weeks.

#

Thatโ€™s why I call it a donation. You buy only convenience.

Is it ok to be confused reading about all the options in HA? Total beginner, will probably be setting up one in a few months and trying to learn now ahead of myself.

#

Already stuck with the base hardware question. Raspi, NAS, Amber, PC, and all the options for each... Is it only me?

clever mortar
#

So, before we direct you to a more suitable channel, what's your experience level with Linux and Docker? Loads/Some/None?

deft pewter
safe grotto
#

None, -> OS. But why would docker be better than OS?

clever mortar
deft pewter
#

More flexibility with Docker. You can install whatever you like alongside it.

clever mortar
#

Docker requires more from you, but you can get more from it

deft pewter
#

You don't have to dedicate a machine (real or virtual) to it.

safe grotto
#

Ok, does that mean I should forget HA on NAS? Is that actually preferable?

deft pewter
#

How? Docker or OS?

#

Some NAS support different ways of installing other software. Some only allow you to install from a really locked-down repository.

VM on the NAS will be fine for HAOS

So this is indeed turtles all the way down.

clever mortar

Well, there's two main choices, and then it's "just" where you run those

That bit isn't quite countless, but it's close enough

safe grotto
#

My feeling is that since I'm a beginner with both NAS and HA, I will go with two separate cheap starter hardwares for each.

clever mortar
#

The Pi4 isn't a bad starter, and if you run on an SSD rather than SD card will likely do you for a long time

deft pewter

As long as there are no takedown notices for copyright infringement for other things that happen to also have 'amber' in their names.

clever mortar
safe grotto

They're fine to leave running permanently.

It could be really fun if you have enough room. The wireless Oculus is probably awesome in that case

#

I've hit the wall a few times with my fist playing SuperHot...

deft pewter
#

That tag game needs something like 100 sqm to play in.

#

I'm guessing that's bigger than a lot of apartments.

orchid rose
#

Really the biggest issue I have is the lack of space. The most immersive experience is when you can move around in the virtual world, but I constantly have to keep in mind that there are walls close by

#

Even stuff like Google Earth is awesome when you can move around

deft pewter
#

Do the headsets warn you when you're getting close to a boundary? I thought you had to map out a 'safe area' for them?

orchid rose
#

Yes and it's quite good. Once you get close to the edge you get this mesh showing where the virtual walls are and if you push through it it shows the camera view. So for example if I have a virtual wall so I don't run into my desk I can push my head in there and look around if I need to pick something from the desk

#

The problem is quick movements. When I quickly try to catch something in SuperHot, I've already hit through those virtual walls before anything registers in my brain lol

#

I even tried setting up the guardian boundaries so I could walk into the next room through the door and it worked just fine

deft pewter
#

if you push through it it shows the camera view
This sounds great. I know it breaks the immersion but that's kinda the point and makes a good safety feature.

orchid rose
#

It helps when I want to grab a drink ๐Ÿ™‚

deft pewter
#

What about games like Beat Saber? That'd be one of the main reasons I'd get a headset. Hard to replicate that kinda gameplay without VR.

orchid rose
#

I haven't played beat saber, but there's not much movement in it afaik so I think it would work perfectly
