Our The Past Within demo build for gamescom is almost ready @everyone! We cannot wait to showcase it Indie Arena Booth next month!

Gamescom is our next big The Past Within milestone - we’re currently working on the replayability feature, the save system and testing translations. Ideally, we’ll have most of those features ready and implemented into the demo in time for the event.
After gamescom - and the incredible playtesting opportunities the event will offer - we expect to have a very clear picture of what’s next! 👀

“Let’s make some memories, WePlay 2025!”

7 years later, Rusty Lake officially returned to WePlay 2025 in Shanghai, China - a 2-day celebration where, at our booth, fans could play the demo of our upcoming game: Servant of the Lake, in booths made to resemble the inside of our now famous carriage! Not only that, but all visitors could also take pictures around the booth in various re-created scenes from our existing games, such as Cube Escape: Birthday and Rusty Lake: Hotel, while we welcomed our amazing fans during meet and greets on the lawn of the Vanderboom estate, and even hosted a Q&A session on the WePlay stage!

Thank you to all our fans who showed up in great numbers to welcome us, thank you to all the amazing cosplayers who blew us away with their talent and a big thank you to the WePlay organisers for accommodating us and making this incredible experience possible!

Our first announcement on Discord is: Rusty Lake Paradise Development update #5 Story

In this update we want to reveal a bit more about the story of Rusty Lake Paradise. It was back in March, when we came up with the idea for this project. Right from the start we were excited about creating an island which is cursed by plagues. Also after The Cave we really wanted to create a different narrative again, like Roots and Hotel.

The main story plot of the game is the 10 plagues, a variation of the ten biblical plagues of Egypt, which curses the island and its inhabitants after the main character's mother mysteriously dies. The player must interact with the family members around the island and partake in rituals in order to stop the plagues. Unfortunately we can’t reveil more info about the family, you will find out yourself 😃 The game will take place before Roots.

In the previous development update we revealed more info about the different gameplay. The last couple of months we showcased on as many gaming conferences as possible (Indigo, Gamescom, PAX and Tokyo Game Show), we do this to not only promote our work but also to play test the new gameplay and levels we already made. We wanted to be 100% sure this new gameplay would fit. And we are now 😃 this weekend in Japan it became more clear that our game doesn't have a language barrier and everyone could play Paradise easily.

Unfortunately the process of creating the story and finetuning the new gameplay caused a delay in development. We changed directions a couple of times and we had to redo a lot of stuff. There is also VERY exciting "next level" (but secret) stuff going on here at Rusty Lake, which also takes some time from us.

For all the people asking when the game comes out: we are aiming to finish all the levels within the next month and then we expect to need 2-3 weeks to test the final build. The game is done when its done :)

The tremendous amount of Rusty Lake fan art we receive throughout the year means a lot and keeps us going. This month is #inktober… so while finishing Paradise, we would like to do a small challenge for all the amazing Rusty Lake fan artists out there!

We have been working day and night to get this game done for you and we can finally see the pieces falling into place. Unfortunately the whole process is taking a bit longer than expected. We still cannot disclose a release date with you, all we can say we are getting closer and closer.

The game features a very big achievement system, Victor made an incredible soundtrack and Johans background is fitting perfectly again. Currently we are working together with a sound designer and we hope to add some voices for the Family next week with the help of Bob Rafferty, who also made this awesome teaser!

Rusty Lake Paradise will be released on iOS, Android, Steam and Itch.io on January 11th 2018 and will cost 3 €/$ (taxes can differ)! Of course we announce this news with mixed feelings; the game would have been perfect for Christmas… in Summer we already hoped for a release in November, but the development process just took longer then expected. Designing a new, bigger narrative with new characters takes a lot of time for us two and with every Rusty Lake premium game that we make, we seem to make it bigger, better and more attractive for you guys.

The good news is that we are becoming very proud of what the game has become since the initial idea back in February this year. Last month the game is finally coming together and we still need every day of the 31 days left to finalize the game with: voice overs, sounddesign, texts, translations and lots of bug testing.
Happy we can provide a clear date now and we just hope you will be excited and supportive as you have been throughout the whole development process. It really kept us motivated (and still is)!! And if you think Rusty Lake will stop after this? There is also a lot happening in the background next to Paradise, not only a new Cube Escape but also a very UNIQUE project that gets more shape every week… It will be something completely new for Rusty Lake and has never been done before in gaming. Guess we owe you guys a first teaser of this project during Christmas. Stay tuned and thanks for your patience… Paradise awaits you.

We probably lost you already...but below you can find a recap of the journey and a big thanks to all who helped us!

We always forget how much work there is in the last weeks before release. We literally spent our last weeks as cave man, finalizing the game as perfect as it can be and now it’s finally released worldwide! The last 10 months has been an incredible ride with lots of ups and downs. This is by far the most ambitious and difficult game we ever made.. it started with a small idea back in March, but it became a way bigger project than we thought. Changing the gameplay, choosing an island as environment, incorporating the ten plagues as a theme for each level, creating the overall storyline, making the connections with the family members and the protagonist, linking it with the overal Rusty Lake narrative, creating more than 100 puzzles and 50 achievements… this is just a small overview of what we have been doing and it was all a very big challenge. We couldn’t have done with the help of others. You all know we are just two guys, but luckily we had the help of other amazing artists, this week we already mentioned it..but Johan Scherft papercraft paintings drawings did an incredible job for Paradise, without his paintings for the plagues and island the game wouldn’t have the same feeling. The same counts for Victor Butzelaarr’s soundtracks, each plague and level has its own theme, which brings the whole atmosphere of the game to another level (soundtrack will be available later today). Thymo Boog, a fellow Dutch sounddesign guy, who helped us with dozens of sounds, from a walking praying mantis to a screaming goat. And then there is Bob Rafferty, more than ever his powerful voice acting is part of the game, he made more than 200 takes for all the voices and next to this he helped with the trailers & walkthroughs. Can’t wait to share a blogpost about all the audio work soon.

We also want to thank all the 12 translators, you guys have been a great help with both translating and testing the game, these people make it possible to release our work worldwide and we are happy they just keep supporting us during last 4 games, amazing job. And of course (as cliche as it sounds) thanks to our family & friends who tested the game beforehand.

Most of all we want thank you guys for your ongoing support! We always think back to the first Cube Escape releases, when we just had 200 followers on social media and there was nothing to worry about. We never imagined the Rusty lake universe would grow so big! This is something we dreamt off starting Rusty Lake, thanks guys for staying with us!
In the end we can say we are really proud what Paradise has become!

Thanks all for being part of this growing community! Unfortunately we aren’t active as much as we like, our daily job at Rusty Lake is already time consuming enough , especially now we work on 3 projects at the same time (+ some some secret stuff). But closer to a release we will be around a lot more. The last couple of weeks we have been making good progress on The White Door and the 3D project, so we are very happy that things are going the right way.

We want to thank @tame brook for his work as a moderator the past years, it means a lot he keeps an eye on the server while we are not here. Lately we have gained a lot more interest and more mods are necessary. Therefore we assigned @opaque hawk and @shell willow as two extra moderators of the Lake and we are sure they will do their best to keep the Discord as nice as possible :)

We just came back from Gamescom and we want to thank everyone that played the demo and gave feedback. Of course we also want to thank everyone at the Indie Arena Booth for having us on such a great showcase!

We also want to thank everyone for the overwhelming support on the teaser trailer we released last week 🙂We have been very excited to share it with you. The White Door has a bit different style than our previous games, interactions and narrative play important role in the overall gameplay experience. But we are making sure it feels like a Rusty Lake game, but this time the focus is a bit more on the narrative part.

We are beyond excited to share this new title with the world!

Let’s start off by saying that The White Door is different than anything we made so far, not only in style but also in gameplay. But we were ready to make a big change after creating 12 games with almost the same mechanics, interface and style. After combining the new black and white style with the split-screen gameplay, we really wanted to focus on telling a personal story, the story of Robert Hill.

It was a big challenge for us to change the gameplay and puzzle mechanics we used to know, and also trying to create the most narrative based game we made so far. But after a year of hard work we can say that we are extremely proud we achieved this and that we can make something out of the ordinary, while remaining the Rusty Lake touch.

Since our start we have been lucky to have people helping us out. A lot of those people are listed in our new, almost movie worthy credits, so please take a look at them when finishing the game. The credits are accompanied by the beautiful theme song from Victor Butzelaar. His enthusiasm for this project kept us going and we couldn’t have made this story without his emotional, atmospheric and beautiful soundtrack. Bob Rafferty almost became Bob Hill with his amazing voiceovers, his work made the game so much more special. Also a big thanks to all the extra voiceovers, Sara Hill, Iris Muller, David Bowles and a cameo from John & Kimmy! The White Door probably contains the most text of all our games, so a big hands down to all our translators who did a terrific job as always, making this worldwide release possible. Thank you so much everyone - also the people in the special thanks section!

Most of all we want thank you all for your ongoing support! Our community of players is growing bigger and bigger and it is sometimes difficult to satisfy everyone and keep innovating at the same time - but we are happy you allow us to take the time to make something different like The White Door. We have a very exciting year ahead for both Rusty Lake and our new publishing label Second Maze. More of the old is coming and more exciting new projects are still in the pipeline! Hi @everyone! We had an amazing time on our Discord during the release of The White Door and especially with the ARG. It was truly mind blowing to see fans from all over the world helping each other and solving puzzles. We are very grateful to have such a wonderful community of fans - and we are very excited to do more of these big community things in the future :)

The last month more than 6000 new Rusty Lake fans joined the server, so we could really use some extra help! We would like to welcome @floral raven and @restive tinsel as our new moderators (<@&358613639554400258>). We are happy to have two great additions to the mod team, they will help us to make sure the server will keep being a nice and safe place for everyone.

We also want to thank our mods @tame brook and @shell willow for all their effort and keeping an eye on the server during the release of the TWD and ARG. Also big thanks to @opaque hawk for helping us out the past two weeks!

The last month we contacted all the winners from The White Door achievement contest and the Samsara Room secret contest. The lucky ones have received an email confirming the prize or you might have received a postcard in your mailbox 🙂 We are excited to share that we made two of the prizes available in our shop: a Samsara Shrimp t-shirt and a The White Door t-shirt, both using embroidery. Feel free to check them out in our merchandising shop: http://www.rustylake.com/merchandise/ (expect delays because of Covid-19).

Currently we are working on the Cube Escape Collection: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1292940/Cube_Escape_Collection/. It was a difficult process to make a new framework for the older games. Good thing is that we now can update them with translations and we have the ability to bundle them into one package. Next to this we are planning to add a whole new hint system, which hopefully can help a lot of newcomers. Our plan is to update all the mobile versions first (sorry for the Android users that experiencing a Black screen at the moment!) and then continue working on the bundle on Steam. Since Flash won't be supported at the end of this year, it is necessary we put all the effort in perserving these games on Desktop and bundle them for a small price. As mentioned the games won't be much different than the current versions, but we hope you will appreciate our efforts to maintain the series on desktop with enough achievements!

Beside the Collection we have more exciting projects… we cannot wait to share our second teaser of the 3D-ish project! Next to this we are helping Johan Scherft with his first game (about cats!). More info about this soon.

We are very excited to share that Johan Scherft, our amazing background artist, has been secretly working on his own game for a while! And it is a game about cats!

Long before we started Rusty Lake, we were inspired by this special web game called Mitoza: a surreal choose your own adventure with countless beautiful animations that would surprise you with every decision you made.

Mitoza initially released on Gal Mayalma’s own website. It subsequently became a massive hit on Kongregate and other Flash games websites.

10 years after its release, we are beyond excited and very honoured to re-release this beautiful game by Gal Mayalma through our publishing program Second Maze.
