I'm trying to find the "why" but shade soul and shriek routes have been almost identical in timing for a long while. shriek was less favored b/c no eyes sucks
but there was probably another small difference between cp and 1221 that made shriek faster and/or more reliable
probably most notably, radiance is easier with shriek
so it's kinda a trade off
do you want less RNG dependent runs, or do you want easier/faster radiance

idr if it ticks more consistently or what, but theres also some weird thing where if you face a direction (idr if its right or left) the knockback knocks the enemy down and not away making it easier to use
the reason you get key for shade soul route is that it costs 800 geo for key and 800 for dash slash, you have to go to peaks either way, and so it ends up being faster to not go to kingdoms edge
wraiths has very bad early game, if you're new to the category you can actually get shade soul and shriek, just pick up wraiths after no eyes and then shriek before voidheart
wraiths in cp can kill the big sentry through floor since they can't lever skip which is pretty massive
this is what i found btw from Quack
to consolidate into one place all the arguments for cp shriek route:
wraiths does more damage
shriek is actually consistent damage
TL health buff means having shriek is nicer
cp uumuu 1 cycle for free
lost kin has infinite staggers so while the fight still sucks it sucks less than on 1221
killing the great husk sentry through the floor since you can't lever skip
cp runners are all babies who variously want or need shriek for the damn moth 🙃

That was pretty frustrating. I was probing to see just how far one can get without Vengeful Spirit, just for a lark. I got up to the Mothwing Conveyor room in Crystal Peak, and while there's potentially a way to get further, it's bananas.

guys im trying to get through QGA without cdash or isma tears, and i am almost making it, it isn't optimal for speedruns, you need howling wraiths, shade dash and the sharp shadow charm, and its SUPER DIFFICULTY, im trying to do this as a challenge to myself, and probably the max you can get is past the spike thing and barely miss the floor on the other side
i walljump this part first, and try to get the max distance i can
when i am around this part i make a fireball skip with 2 fireballs, to get more distance and give me time to react
i dash when i am barely touching the acid
and then i use abyss shriek when i am on the other side to hold me in the air for a little longer
and then i am trying to use double jump
to get to the other side
and if it isnt enough
i will use spell twister
to have an extra fireball when i am at the other side

hey guys, very very new, and I've seen a lotta videos where runners open their inventory or something to avoid being stunned on falling. How do they do this?

on patch 1.2: you can open your inventory in the air at any point which will remove the falling acceleration cap and allow you to land without lag, this is known as inventory dropping. On patch 1.4 you can no longer open your inventory in the air at any point, but if you open it while sliding off a ledge, dashing off a ledge, or right as you hard fall you can achieve the same effect as long as you time it right. On current patch or 1.5 the later two instances of inventory dropping or inventory l canceling are patched out so the only thing you can do is time it so you slide off of ledges with your inventory open, and that will allow you to inventory drop

Yeah 1xx is super hard to optimize and even remember the route but in terms of difficulty of each individual thing, 1xx is often easier because you have more equipment

download the 112% splits from speedrun.com, watch a run, make some notes to remember everything and then just start running
if you dont wanna go competitive its also pretty fun to modify the route to make it a little more nice on you
since the competitive route is pretty damn hard

yeah, I've watched a couple of runs and it looks amazing, but I also know my limitations and some of the tricks and skips I have to practice for a long while before I am able to do them. The hardest part for me is to remember the order of things 😄

There are pretty much two required easy skips as to follow that route (there are a lot of detours to avoid harder ones); squit skip (which is very easy) and the crystal peak elevator skip (which is even easier), so it's actually not a difficult category (ignoring its length)

Do want to mention that it really isnt neccesary to read/watch everything in our guide for your first run as the guide's size is kinda intimidating. I recommend just getting a feel of the route first by doing a run just following the maps then going back in debug and learning the strats

but if u do decide u want to get steam/gog version again and downpatch, then the most popular "fastest" patch to run nmg cats on is 1221, bc it has inventory drops, lever skips, and some easier things compared to cp
however cp is plenty competitive as well, it has its own boards and is the most popular patch for meme runs

nvm found the issue, turns out I needed to turn off the default xbox controller config in steam

After downpatching to 1.2.2.1 via Steam, I am able to easily launch this patch, and the menu works totally fine. However, upon making a new save file, I see the Elegy for Hallownest excerpt, and then after skipping it, my screens goes black and there is no music or anything. I have never had this problem while playing current patch or anything. In case it matters, both of my other save files are in Godhome, which obviously doesn't exactly agree with this patch, but I don't know that it would affect this new save.
Anyone know how to fix this?

Does anyone know why in the speedrunning.com do they count time including loading screens and not the in-game timer at the end of the game?

ie if ur on pc ur loads do not count
we don't use in game timer because its often unreliable
on old patches it often just doesn't work

hey everyone, i'm having trouble with livesplit. Everytime i play hollow knight on 1221 livesplit gets hidden when i open the game; this never happens on 1432 and current patch, i was just wondering if anyone new how to fix it?

you probably have windowed borderless on in steam launch settings
step one bottom left add 1221 as non steam game
then add -popupwindow in launch settings by right clicking and hitting properties
then when you launch through steam it should work
