the second one is much more difficult and can be dodged by going around thru fungal and deepnest instead (~40s slower)

current patch has shorter setup with slightly less jank, 1221 is more competitive with some quality of life skips and bugs
1221 has significantly worse performance, you'll want to be getting at least 200fps on current patch to consider running 1221
any% is fairly similar on both patches, if you plan to do all skills or other mainboard categories those tend to be better on 1221
and the category extensions page is primarily current patch runners so you'll find more friends there
either way its pretty easy to swap once you know more about the game
list of 1221 exclusive things i guess:
- Inventory drops (uncap fall speed, go zoom zoom) are easier and can be done anywhere [current patch its frame perfect off ledge, very minimal timesave]
- baldur instant kill (less rng in greenpath)
- easier explosion pogo on 1221 [little harder on cp (current patch) but not by too much]
- Lever skip in city of tears [on cp you kill big bad husk]
- Uumuu is different, easier to reach optimal fight
- THK is easier
pros/cons to both don't want to list them all off but thats a brief idea

its all timing, if you can cdash off the wall on one side then you can jump off it on the other. The input isn't buffered, so your input needs to be after you regain control (when you also start moving) and before you slide into the acid.
its a balance between being low enough from the corner to allow you to cdash, and then as high as possible under that limit to maximise time on the left side to jump

It vastly depends. Is HK your first speedgame? Your first metroidvania? Did you jump right into running or did you practice segments/specific tech beforehand? You know these factors better than anyone in the community can judge them, so generally a "good time" is the one you've landed on, whether it's your first finished run, your first deathless run, or a specific time milestone like subhour or sub-40 in any%. (Those two get thrown around as various benchmark times, but that's the most satisfying an answer I can give you if you really want just a time to run against; whichever you're closer to of those). But honestly if you wanna keep speedrunning hk the best place to be is just running against past you 🙂

Bammy16, did you watch the "introduction" video that fireb0rn has made a couple of years ago? That should cover everything you need to know - if you didn't I suggest you to check it out, then if you have more specific doubts we'll fix those 
Void, are you on CurrentPatch or 1221? What doesn't go well in your aspid arena? You miss the second aspid? You miss both because they move out? - a general advice is to go on the spike platform as soon as you see the aspid spawn, then jump and hit the spike, but without a video (or more informations) that's hard to understand where you are making mistakes

and fwiw posting a clip of what you're doing is much more useful. however it just sounds like you're not swinging early enough - you have the nail hitbox moving up into the spike from quite far down. it may be helpful to show hitboxes using debug to get a feel for it

Does anyone know how to submit a real PoP speedrun? I know there have to be no mods on during the run, but there's a wall that has to be unbroken and when you complete a run without a save state, the wall is gone forever and you have to go to a new world for the next attempt.

runners used to copy a save file into their saves to get pop open again. However you are permitted (for IL runs only) to use MiniSavestates, which allows you to set a savestate before entering PoP and load it again when you finish/fail.

otherwise for the speedrun route, you can do spore shroom THK on console + deepnest route to avoid QG, which is one of the worse areas on cp (and in general). this run shows deepnest spore route relatively well, but this was in the early days of spore so may be suboptimal strats in THK https://www.speedrun.com/hollowknight/run/z06kq79z

FWIW you don't need to fight Mantis Lords to get into Deepnest. You can fall in near where you get Spore Shroom, that's the usual alternative to QGA

I don't know how, but I got livesplit to be on top even in Fullscreen. I think it has to do with the order in which you open each program. Try opening livesplit first and then launching hk

guys I have downpatched the game to 1.2.2.1 and I added the game to my steam library and the controller gets recognized by steam but not by the game itself, any suggestion on how to fix it?

use joy2key to map controller to keyboard inputs
especially if it's a switch pro controller. support for that didn't exist back on 1221

any controller to keyboard mapping program will work. I've also seen people say that if you switch out the game folder with your main patch game folder, then it could work. not sure how true that is for a pro controller though. but maybe it'll work for you

i do speedruns on 1221, and every time i quit from a save files, my nail hotkey is unbound, and i have to rebind it everytime (which wastes time when i quit out after mothwing cloak/claw/cdash)

i suppose socd would work for mouse as well? or is it only for the turnaround double input thingy. I forgot about blue.exe tbh

socd is just left/right or a/d (or any arbritrary keys) being released when you press the other for 1f turnarounds w/ no deadtime, blue.exe is separate entirely for rebinding mouse1 and mouse2 to h and t respectively (iirc)

You will need to use an external program like joy to key in order to map your controls to keyboard keys
Some controllers simply weren't supported back then

pop ending should be a hardcoded end split and as such shouldn't need end-triggering autosplit 
at least iirc, pop end splits predate the end-triggering autosplit option

I think before end-triggering autosplit existed, PoP was just stopped manually

whats the hardest skip for a newer player to learn? personally its QGAS, shade skip with just vengeful could be harder but way easier to setup, and doesnt have 2 hard parts, dark room skips would also be hard, but doable with bruteforcing unlike QGAS

In what sense? Hardest useful skip? Hardest skip used in any category that's actually ran? Hardest skip used in any category whatsoever?
(As for those, I think an significant amount of people would consider QGA to be easier than fireball-only blue lake shade skip)

The hardest skip that could be used in a speedrun is mag isma's in save myla (which requires several frame-perfect inputs in a row), but there are easier versions that people do instead
There's also the aspid pogo in great hopper%, which is mostly hard because of rng
Low% spelless optimally does blue lake shade skip with nothing but longnail
And then there's clawless shade cloak, which is chock-full of ridiculous and difficult skips

yeahi was, for som reason it would load my gamepad config but wouldn't recognize the controller as being connected in 1.2.2.1 but did in stable.. i got joytokey to work tho so

you can add -popupwindow to the launch arguments in steam to make it borderless fullscreen or press alt+enter while in windowed mode to make it borderless fullscreen
then make sure your livesplit layout has "Always On Top" enabled

Is there a special trick to getting under the big batch of thorns in Fog Canyon to the Queen's Gardens? I've been trying to get under them but I can't lock on to the edge long enough to activate crystal dash

Just go through Deepnest
Especially on current patch
It loses like 25s if you are a top level player
If you're on 1.4.3.2 it's even less because if Spore Shroom

If you wanna learn it it's called QGA (Queen's Garden Acid skip), there are different reasons you might be failing it, mainly being too fast with your inputs
There are different tutorials around the internet if you wanna know more about that trick

Helps to practise cdash timing on the wall above and just doing it over and over again in debug
But ye I agree with tami on just doing deepnest route esp if ur starting out
