Finde halt die preskriptive Ansicht ein wenig veraltet um ehrlich zu sein. Gut, aber Platt hat überlebt und kann wieder aufleben. Das ist etwas anderes als der heutige Untergang der Grammatik des Hochdeutschen...

Ich erinnere nur an Verena Feldbusch und "Der Dativ ist dem Genitiv sein Tod".

Platt aus unserer Region ist wie bereits erwähnt halt seit den 50s tot. Also ostfälisches Platt, was noch um einiges anders ist als was die an der Küste noch aktiv nutzen

Wenn ich Plattdeutsch reden würde, hätte man das nicht, dass man korrigiert wird. Weil das halt eine Mundart ist, die als das was sie ist gesehen und gelebt wird. Ein von Generation zu Generation weitergetragenes Kulturgut zur Kommunikation.

Das Hochdeutsch ist nun einmal die Sprache, auf die sich allgemein geeinigt wurde, damit jeder Deutsche jeden Deutschen verstehen kann*. Und damit das weiterhin verständlich bleibt, muss es natürlich einige Regeln geben.

*Wie bei den Römern damals das Latein, vor einigen Jahrhunderten das Französisch und heutzutage (noch) das Englisch.

why do some languages have grammatical gender/genus for non-living things or is this a stupid question to ask?

my native language is an analytic language so conjugating words differently based on grammatical gender seems like such an alien idea to me that i cant help but ask

Not quite sure but one thing i do know is a lot of words that don't get gendered see massive use in English
For instance we have one word
The. "The" is nearly double the number two spot of word frequency and towers above everything else being the Most used word in the English alphabet.
Splitting it up does seem to overcomplicate things but most languages overcomplicate things. Languages aren't designed they naturally evolve over time and often have strange and weird quirks that make little sense.

It exists because the languages it evolved from had it

Most European languages (specifically Indo European) tend to have gender like that

A few outliers like basque which existed before that, don't

Only a few are phasing it out

Notably swedish which inserted a neutral one and is slowly phasing the idea out

It originally started when languages had genders based on "animate" (alive) and "inanimate" (not alive) and then it transformed slowly, slowly for many thousands of years into different structures.

Basically language is just the way you talk, and once we're fluent in a language, we don't think that much about what the grammar is or why it exists. We just do it automatically, and new grammar comes up all the time (see all the current slang, etc. for an example). Some group just starts talking a bit differently without thinking and eventually over a long time it evolves to a new grammar.

Thank you, you can greatly improve any language you pursue by actively applying it. I love computer games. After getting to about A2 level traditional way, my first stage of improvement was playing them only using the language of choice. It works especially well if you write things down and actively research. Then I started chatting. I started seeking out people to play with via Discord servers - among rare toxicity there are always awesome co-op discoveries.
Than I proceeded to post on discussion forums and just speak my mind.

My next biggest stage of improvement is starting to read books in the language I study. Make it a daily habit (if only it's just a single sentence), which is going to be quite challenging at first. But it gets easier along the way - keep chipping at it. Reading aloud also helps, always check pronunciations online.

Books are generally so much better in original language, most of the time

In time, you'll notice how all the experience you absorb starts popping here and there in your mind, as you keep practicing

Of course, you'll find your own tricks and approaches along the way, that work for you. Don't be too hard on yourself, trust the power of small steps
