When you learn vocabularly on the side, you can already understand some written german until then
Learning vocabulary should be thought of as steadily adding a few words each day without it feeling to much of a hussle
I'd suggest this instead of duolingo
Was war eigentlich der Grund dahinter, dass Stella und du dieses Mathezeugs vor eurem Namen habt? 😄
And the server also offers a lot of opportunities to get started. Maybe it’ll help you to listen to conversations in one of the voice chats or learn some basic's in #beginner-german
@fate.#8002

Ganz lange Geschichte
To sum up: Ich wollte was cooleres aus dem x in meinem Username machen, also packte ich ne Funktion drum
Welcome!
looking at the course, A1 seems really concise but I probably shouldn't rush through the course coz it's a language
btw, do u guys know about any unis germany with good english taught courses
Und Stella machte mit, weil ein Sinus kommt selten allein
Your priority should be to expose yourself to as much understandable German as possible. @mellow magnet
Ich versteh 😂
War meine Schuld 🤓
Stimmt! Er hat mich erst auf das x angesprochen
Yaa
ja.. that’s what i’m doing right now lol
or attempting
fick
the german urge to write wasser instead of water on anything
I say mein instead of mine way too much. saying wasser sounds horrible
when talking to almost anyone i’ll just say wasser instead of water-
I don't have my glasses on and I saw the dash as a tilda and I got confused and thought you were saying something about calling people tall glasses of water lmao
interesting
Hahaha
hi
alles klar chef
Thing is people say duo isnt good because it only gets you to A1, but thats it purpose and why it is good. You need to get to A1 before you can go further anyway. Its probably the best resource out there for beginning
Duolingo is a decent resource to start with if you're a complete beginner, but it's neither efficient nor comprehensive!
What Duolingo will teach you about grammar is very limited, and none of the systems they use will help you practise much of it.
You can learn some vocabulary with it, but their method (based on the concept of spaced repetition) doesn't work for everybody, and the way Duolingo teaches is not very effective compared to the amount of time it requires from you.
So, if you find it useful, by all means keep using it, but remember not to fall for its gamification of language learning, and move past it when it stops being beneficial. Ignore the streaks.
In any case, keep in mind that Duolingo is not enough to learn a language, ever.
If you're looking for guidance or alternatives, check out >faq beginner in our #botchannel .
Not efficient or comprehensive.
There are so many better apps and resources to try than just duo
Not comprehensive just literally means it gets u to a lower stage, ie A1
Busuu, drops, memrise, lingq, anki, readle, maybe pimsleur (super expensive)
Fair enough, but it is inefficient and lacks grammar info
It's a bad start imo
memrise and drops dont have grammar info really either
duo does technically
lingq technically no one uses it
anki is 0% helpful for a beginner
Yeah, they're definitely side resources but.. Duo is just as bad imo, if not worse
How can it be bad if its perfect at accomplishing its goal
Really I'd start with basics from good youtube channels or podcasts maybe. Obv talking to actual ppl if there's a choice
.. I'm saying this abt Duo partially because of my personal experience I suppose? I tried duo for a decent amount of time, learnt nothing and was confused about grammar due to the lack of comprehensive explanations. So based on that, for me, it achieved nothing
Yea im not a "duo fan" even tho I finished 3 or 4 trees
Oof.. No clue how many I did
But im more against people who say you can "learn" through duo to B level, some even say C level
B2 to C1 level is a lot of brute memorization of words and grammar
which is why im reading the dictionary
I would definitely say premium busuu is 100% better than duo, because of the grammar explanations, being able to save words, being able to upload text or audio to be corrected by natuves or ppl that know the language etc etc
But that obv costs money
Yeahhhh
I have a dictionary.. But I can barely read it
abdrucken - print
abdrücken - pull the trigger
this is making me scared of german
**Be scared? **
And overcome it
I said ö correctly earlier so I'm happy (I've struggled to say it for 3-4 years)
how do u guys even type that kind of u and o and stuff
i just use german kezboard
I've never seen oo in German, I'm scared
moss - Moos
My keyboard is set to recommend eng and ger words, but I keep eng layout
Oh boy
Me: feeling happy with pronunciation
Ziel: oo
My brain hasn't seen this before, it can't comprehend it
i cant get it quite right either
ziel

how long did u take to get to c1 btw
Bin ich nicht😔
Then B1/2?
ah german is a great but stupid language

Well 5 years but i have been learning es and fr so in 5 years i got B2 German, B1 French and Spanish
You're speaking in English
I will say it took me 6 months to get used to cases
we mix a lot of stuff
you guys know "jetzt haben wir den salat"
when translating straight to english, well ☠️
Right?
ich mach moves für den Salat
Now we have the salad.. I don't get it
oh
well basically when we say "jetzt haben wir den salad" in german we do not mean "now we have the salad"
but
"i knew this [problem or whatever] was going to happen, and now we have got it. [problem]."
Oh, is it supposed to be a saying??
Oh
I can't read sorry
My brain filters the most important words out at times
yep its a saying xD
That's so weird in comparison to the ones I know
yes its kinda famous
jemandem Abbitte leisten (wegen) u ever heard this @hard coral
i believe it was something to excuse yourself
oh nvm wait
ah i got it on my tongue
The tip of your tongue
yeah xD
ok, im not really sure but i believe it does mean of asking someone to accept their apology.

Hi everyone! I am now sitting with not enough understandable sentence: though I know all words from it
"Unsere Wellness-Programme machen Ihren Urlaub zu einem Erlebnis".
Was genau ist "zu einem Erlebnis"? "to the experience"? but it seems not to pass the meaning of the sentence
"Our wellness programs will turn your vacation into an experience"
(That's how I would translate it.)
@pastel karma I think the key to understand this sentence is the phrase "(jemanden) zu (etwas) machen", which means something like "to create something for someone".
@mental geyser hello, please keep in mind that we only allow English and German in most of the channels, and do refrain from spamming emoji. Take some time to read the #rules if necessary.

Oh sry
I used to. With german wasn’t not so good for me
with such easy questions like these
how come aufnahmeprüfung is so hard ?
with so much competition
Imagine all those flying mathematic symbols and forms and now picture those around my head and you‘ll have me while looking at this😅😂
Oh shit u at FU?
The math is rlly easy
I think the hardest part is understand the question (i.e. the language)
I solved the quesion 5 a)
sucks when you know the math but not the language smh
The math is everything but easy lmao, as of yesterday you know my age, so combine that with me having repeated 6th grade and you‘ll know why lol, despite being on a „Gymnasium“ for most my school time
Realschule doesn‘t teach like half of that
Even til the very end
So it‘s kind of baffling when you‘re finished with „Realschule“, and so with school in general, but still are as stupid as a 9th grade „Gymnasiast“
Because this is 11th/12th grade content
But even there you'd get harder exercises
Tbf, this is studienkolleg; it's supposed to prepare you for uni. Just like the Abitur
How so?
The gender stuff is obviously harder than English, but the tenses are a lot fewer in number
So I feel like German and English are relatively even
🤔
It’s not that, I’m just surprised because der die das is usually first thing on everyone’s list for how German’s difficult
The split verbs are kinda weird I guess
Especially coming from an English speaking background
@tiny violet heyo could you DM me when you catch some time, regarding you know what, no rush.
Admin being sus 👀
I’m not sure what about word order you’re finding a pain then to be honest 😆
It’s just patterns really
How so xD
English is incredibly easy to learn
German is a lot harder
dont do it
@frigid ether @blissful jasper please only write German in #german-only. If you wanna have a conversation in an other language use #other-languages.
Anyways, welcome on the server! I would suggest reading #getting-started, if you are unsure how everything works here
ок
One thing I've noticed in common with both languages is that speakers of neither language are confident with pronunciation of the other xD
Like the accents are so different that it's easy to stand out and have it be obvious that it's not your first language
I never had pronounciation issues.. neither did my friends
You can pronounce everything correctly and still have an accent. These are not mutually exclusive

Bulli: "I'm not a native English speaker!"
Also Bulli: can use the word attest in a sentence
Is this hard in english?
“Attest” is a pretty advanced word yeah
I’ve only heard it a few times in my entire life, and I suspect quite a few natives wouldn’t know what it means fully (especially when by itself like that)
Native speakers of languages often know fuck all
I mean, you don’t need to be a native speaker to be fluent in a language.
I give up

my english is slowly dwindling
Mine's getting worse too
I saw the word "sawn" today and had to remind myself of its existence

@hot cloak to answer your question: I'm able to read Cyrillic, but my Russian vocabulary is really limited
Since my grandparents are the last ones who actually speak Russian, I didn’t grow up with it
ah kk that's quite interesting
KKKKK
Sorry if this is rude but are you okay with English corrections?
I’m happy to, if it helps :D
@hot cloak Brazilianisches Lächeln, wenn es KKK wäre dann bestände aus 3 K (das ist nicht jedoch der Fall meiner Schrift)
@merry inlet Ich weiß ich bin er nicht, aber ich würd gern wissen, ob er Fehler gemacht hat
hab keinen gesehen 🤔
@warm summit i didn't grow* up with it
Since my grandparents were* / or since my grandparents are the last ones who actually speak*
Sonst alles gut
ooh
It’s not rude, thank you for asking! Was the "grew/grow" thing the mistake you found?
Oh, es steht da ja sogar
Yeah xD That and the space in the word "grandparents"
Personally I would've said "My grandparents are the last people in my family to learn Russian; I didn't grow up with them, so I'm not very familiar (with it)". I think this way would be a bit more natural perhaps
Since my grandparents were the last ones to actually speak Russian, I wasn't able to grow up with it nor learn it through family
thats what id say
Since my grandparents were
I think the intended implication of the original message was that they're still alive, but they just simply didn't grow up with them
I see that too but also feel that the "were" depicts the ending of the line of family speaking russian
Thats how I use it but "are" is good too probably better
Ich bin neu hier
Willkommen! Les dir am besten mal #getting-started durch, da findest du sinnvolle Hinweise :D
Just want to ask a little question, what is the difference between saying - "Nein Idee" and "keine Ahnung"?
It means the same thing. it´s just a different way of saying that you dont know sth or you dont have an idea. Btw "nein Idee" is wrong it´s "keine Idee" and you have to put "keine Idee" in a sentence like "Ich habe keine Idee.". When you say "keine Ahnung" it´s not necessary to put it in a sentence

Es passiert mir recht häufig, dass ich auf YouTube kommentiere und manchmal bekomme ich sogar recht viele Upvotes. 😂
Jeder benutzt halt YouTube. 🤷♂️
xDD
Verstehen ist übertrieben
aber besser als schwedisch
Niederländisch geht, da vertseht man soagr recht viel
Norwegisch ist so lala, Swedisch ist wie französisch
Ich spreche Französisch auf C1-Niveau, also würde ich das sowieso verstehen. 😂
ist dein portugiesisch auch gut?
Ich rede es jeden Tag mit meinen Eltern.
Huh, that Norwegian was quite easy for me to understand
nice 🙂
Isn't it trivial to understand Norwegian if you speak Swedish? 🤔
Wie Französisch?
Depends on the dialect
Joa, ich lerns noch, und lass es lieber
Which dialect is the easiest to understand? Oslo?
Yeah, the more eastern, the easier
Northern dialects are honestly also easier to understand cuz they sound like northern Swedish dialects
But there are Swedes that can't even understand the most basic Norwegian 🙄 damn rookies
Hmm, that reminds me of the relationship between Spanish and Portuguese speakers. Portuguese speakers can understand Spanish speakers much better than Spanish speakers can understand Portuguese speakers, and it also varies heavily from dialect to dialect.
If you know a thing or two about the different phonologies of these languages, it makes perfect sense. Spanish sounds like Portuguese with vowels as they are written, whereas Portuguese is like Spanish with mumbled vowels.
I believe Norwegians understand Swedish better cuz they're more exposed to it than the other way around. Norwegians watch Swedish TV and stuff, but the reversed pretty much doesn't happen
Traurig
There is a similar case where that happens within the same language. European Portuguese speakers have almost no trouble at all understanding Brazilian Portuguese, since they're exposed to it all the time. Brazilians, however, have a hard time understanding the Portuguese because they have very little exposure to them.
It's a similar dynamic to Scottish English vs American English in that regard.
Yep.
Though at least you hear British accents all the time in American media. That isn't the case at all for Brazilian media. European Portuguese is basically non-existent there.
Oh, I see
its not only about exposure, european portuguese has weird sounds that make understanding harder for non-portuguese speakers too
Yeah, but it's nothing you couldn't get used to with more exposure to it. European Portuguese was almost unintelligible to me as a Brazilian kid, but now I can understand it just fine.
its funny, when i was in brazil they told me i spoke like a portuguese and when i was in portugal they told me i spoke like a brasilian
A danish girl started at my little sister's school and she can't understand anyone and noone can understand her lol
When you spoke Spanish?
i spoke portuguese
So maybe you were speaking with an Angolan accent then. It sounds to me like a cross between Brazilian and European Portuguese.
ive heard angolans and they do sound similar to me
Which accent are you trying to go for anyway?
north
It's also a common phenomenon for English learners, who often end up sounding oddly Mid-Atlantic.
im not trying to go for any accent, im cherry picking things from portugal and brasil
just like i do with english
No wonder they told you that then. 😂
Anyone here from berlin

Hallo, ich bin haru, wie geht´s
Willkommen Haru!
Hallo hallo
danke
achso
hab gehört es wurde von einem türken der in deutschland lebt erfunden
wusste nicht dass er aus berlin war
Das ist mir auch neu
ja ich weiß eh was du meinst.
hallo

Wie geht es ihr
gut dir
how did an abjad become a character based language
Hallo!

.

Hallo alle
Hallo wie geht's
Mir gehst es sehr gut. Danke schön. Und du?
Mir auch
😁
Mir geht* es sehr gut. Danke schön. Und dir*?
Hello, is this the number for tech support?
I have a PDF where the pages don’t really line up with the pages of the document, so half of the page (sheet music in this case) is on one page of the pdf and the other half of the sheet is on the next page. Is there an easy way to copy/merge those onto one page?
why is it dir and not du?
Spiritual unfortunately I don’t think there is an easy way to do that. I would maybe try converting into a word document and then back into a pdf but I’ve never tried messing with sheet music and I don’t know that word would recognize it. did you create the pdf?
Thanks anyway! I didn’t create the pdf.
it’s du because the phrase is “es geht [mir/dir/euch/ihnen/ihm/ihr] [gut/schlecht etc.]” always takes dative
and the “und dir?” Is a shortening for “und wie geht es dir?” Since that’s what it’s in response to
I can’t explain very well 😦
haha no problem. that makes sense, thanks
tried my new espresso machine
its great

Hallo
Thats nice to hear :D
yum yum send pics of espresso
i will on my next cup : ) none of my mugs are the right size, i want to get a big latte mug
do you have a milk frother?
the machine has one yeah!
woo
cappuccino and latte time
yesss now that i work from home i will actually have time to make coffee at home
my parents espresso machine has one but since it has a relatively small internal tank that it heats, it's not very good at frothing
since it can only make enough steam for like 200ml of milk
great for solo ig
someday i do want to get a fancy one, but this one was a gift and will do the job just nicely
i want a coffee now but its midnight
yeah once it's not instant coffee i am usually happy
yeah not a great time for coffee lmao
Was los mit dir?
Guten Tag alle! I’m really looking forward to being able to ask a few questions to improve my German even further and help those just starting out!
thats nice
Welcome! We're glad to have you here
Don't hesitate to ask, if there are any questions & I hope you'll be able to improve your German here
Me and my friend having a laugh over a pronunciation mistake I made with “pizza” in German vs English (he’s the one recording). Spent like a minute trying to replicate it and kept laughing our asses off while trying.

Hello there
Oh right, I think I remember my mother saying that they speak German there.
but, it's not the German, like they speek in Germany
german is better than this xD
Yes, she said its slightly different. I think her native language is German but he forgot it after a while when she learned English at school
idk, for peoples who aren't from switzerland it's difficult to understand
Also hello, Dose
Hey
your mothers native is German?
No French name here?
i can change them back xD
Yes, but she forgot most of it. She said she can pick it up when she hears it
How long is she away from Germany?
Her mother is from Germany but moved to Canada during WW2 and my mother learned it from her

@lavish minnow there are for sure times where I wouldn’t use one over the other. It’s a hard thing to explain because there are like gee idk 5 million different contexts we could discuss 🥸
It’s hard to sum it all up in another way other than just that sometimes you can use both words without being disrespectful.
That's true, but I think generally speaking their age group should be a pretty good indicator as to which is more appropriate.
Sometimes, definitely.
It’s pretty difficult to explain though and probably just a feeling I have developed for it having grown up where I have.
It might also be generational, who knows

That intro was pure ASMR until he spoke haha
lmaoooo
Yeah, I'm not getting much of anything haha. It sounds like slurred German >_>
I love how half of the sentences end with "hä?"
This is cool. It weaves in and out of understandable, like he hits a button at random
a lot of those words I only know because of my IRL experience too
Like when he says „gell“ it’s a regional word for „ne/oder?“
Damn yeah those little titbits are invaluable. I doubt I'd pick up on that in the wild
only understood sentences here and there
There are sentences where I understand 50-70% of the individual words but without the rest I’m lost
I understand him pretty well but there’s a few times where I had zero clue what he said at all as well 😂
Listening is my weakest skill at the best of times (i.e. when language is the standard, primarily-taught register), so I'm definitely buggered on this one
What is your current German level like?
Much worse than it used to be. I learned for a couple years, but that was nearly 10 years ago, stopped for years to concentrate on work, just restarted maybe a couple months ago. I've not assessed my level yet, working on pulling all my old progress back together first
A lot of the grammar stuck with me surprisingly well actually; it's the vocabulary primarily that trickled out
And that's kinda the fundamental building block for knowing WTF people are saying 😛
Imo vocabulary can be just as if not harder than grammar
Though grammar often intertwines with vocabulary, for example „sich etwas holen“, you not only need to understand each individual word, but also the grammatical rules behind a reflexive verb with both a dative and accusative object.
Definitely so for me. I love grammar actually. Nothing motivates me to learn a language more than grammar (tied with phonology). Vocabulary always just feels like a slog though, as essential as it is
Tbh that’s sorta how I feel
I‘m a wee bit better with grammar than vocabulary, which I could probably fix if I consumed more in German, but mostly I just talk to people.
My vocabulary is pretty good, but sometimes I find myself not knowing something basic which I should have and I question how the hell I never knew it.
I‘m at a point though where when actually just talking to people I almost never need to look something up or ask what something means
But when I try reading literature I need to do a bit more of looking stuff up
My big problem is that I am studying as a hobby and don't have the time to put, well, time into consuming. Mainly I read when I can (accompanied with an audiobook to try to get some semblance of listening in). I got back into German a couple months back just because I missed it so much. It's frustrating though when I know how much more easily I used to be able to read without having to constantly look things up, compared to now with so much bigger gaps in my vocabulary
Even native speakers can start to forget some of their language if they move somewhere else, but it’s less influential the older one is.
I remember reading an article about that. That must mess with your head in a big way O_o
It’s also comforting to know most people are either mono- or bilingual, multilingualism is very rare.
People who have no truly native language due to the circumstances of their life and all that
Monolingualism is super dominant in Scotland. It's kind of sad tbh
I met a guy with very interesting, rare circumstances on this server.
Especially with the people who throw abuse at those who speak Gaelic here; they're like monolingual as a personality trait
He doesn’t consider himself to have a native language because he grew up in a Russian-speaking household, in Germany, while also attending an „international-school“ where everything was taught in English.
Huh, interesting
A native speaker is usually someone who grows up not only speaking it with their parents, but with literally everyone
He considers himself not to have a native language, rather than being multilingual native?
So it’s a really odd case
He said word for word „I don’t consider myself to have a native language“ as far as I can remember
But honestly I don’t see why he couldn’t just say he has three native languages
I never understood that it’s almost like racism but with languages
That's interesting. You know, actually, my first language was Irish, but I couldn't call it my native language (because, well, my mum stopped speaking to me in it by like 6 years old and we went back to Ireland less and less, so there was no exposure; I remember barely a word these days). But on the island my mum comes from, kids are raised speaking Irish until 5 or 6 before being taught English.
In the USA where I‘m from there are quite a lot of bilingual speakers of Spanish and English, basically people whose parents are Mexican but they themselves were not born in Mexico.
Yeah it's messed up. Scotland has a lot of problems that are sort of, well, we usually branch it all under sectarianism. Parts of Scotland are like Northern Ireland-lite in terms of the cultural divisions
And it’s kind of fascinating how they speak fluent Spanish to each other but then they have a very American accent in English
Isn‘t Irish sort of dying as well?
It's definitely on the downturn, but the Irish in the island we come from is strong, probably in part thanks to it being an island. Super tight-knit community
Gaelic here in Scotland is in a far worse state though. People overstate how hard it is to come across though. I think they're just oblivious a lot of the time due to not being attuned to it.
Huh, that‘s all very interesting. How different is that dialect from what your dad was actually speaking though?
It’s a real shame that it was discriminated against due to colonialism, same thing with the Americas and it’s native people. There used to be hundreds of languages spoken by them here, many still exist but are spoken by nearly nobody in comparison to before it was colonized. Lots of those languages completed died out.
Come across in what sense?
Well it wasn't full on standard English. Given similarities between Irish and Scottish English, we didn't have to go all the way standard. But the local dialect is a lot thicker (more Scots than Scottish English), many more traditional words and such. My mum even to this day still struggles with thicker speakers (typically very working class, out in the outskirts rather than from a town/city proper). I understand entirely but I can only speak it in a more diffuse form (Scots to Scottish English is on sort of a spectrum, with different speakers speaking somewhere on that spectrum based on their background; nobody these days speaks pure Scots unless doing so in the pursuit of Scots literary history), not personally using some words from my local dialect just because they don't feel natural. I do speak thickly enough that I have to work hard for my American cousins to understand me easily when I speak though
Just in the wild. I often overhear it wondering about in a town of city for example. Far from everyday, but it's certainly not dead. That said, I know what to listen for. I'm sure many people would presume it's just some other language (a friend of mine heard a Gaelic speaker once and said it was Dutch). People think you specifically have to go to some specific place to find it, and that is true in the sense that you can't rely on stumbling into it, but it does exist in the wild
.
Absolutely, yeah that shit always makes me a wee bit depressed. There's inevitably a cultural loss when a language is lost to boot.
Hell, even dialects just have unique qualities when it comes to stories, poems, etc. If you've ever tried converting a Scots poem to standard English, as I've done for a laugh once, even if you convey the same thing and use correspondingly appropriate English, it might well have its own charms, but the charms won't be the same
I’ve always wondered actually whether there’s a Scottish dialect that exists, somewhere in some village in the middle of nowhere, that I can’t even understand. It would be quite fascinating if there is, because it’s really a rarity for English, whereas with many other languages it’s quite common. I’ve heard with Arabic, literally nobody speaks standard at all, everyone speaks some thick dialect, and if you try speaking standard to them (and do it really well) it’s almost intimidating to them since they are way better at their dialect than the standardized Arabic.
But in the English speaking world, it’s so rare to actually hear someone speaking a dialect you can hardly understand.
Gaelic itself is Germanic though is it not
I funnily enough have a coworker whose family speaks Gaelic, so I think he’s sort of like a heritage-speaker, but he’s probably better at English.
Have you visited Scotland? If you visit some of the poorer towns, I'd wager you'd find plenty you can't understand. I have my moments myself 😛
Gaelic is Celtic; it's very close to Irish (some speakers insist they're still the same language, although some insist they're not. And most don't care :P)
I can understand exactly what you mean being able to easily understand German and English. Each one has its certain words or phrases, which although can be translated, carry no where near the level of charm as in the opposing language.
Does anyone consider it to be an „Irish dialect“?
Never
Honestly I love the Scottish accent, I think it’s my second favorite next to Australian.
Hmm, not sure, but Irish is a pluricentric language (maybe a little like your Arabic example) there is a "book Irish" which is taught in schools and such, but there are three major organic (for want of a better word) dialects of Irish. Would seem natural for their to be a fourth (or however many more for major Scottish dialects) major dialect. Irish is the parent language, with Gaelic having come from Ireland, so I'd suppose it'd be natural to consider it an Irish dialect (but then, Gaelic is the English cognate of the Irish word for the language, so honestly I'm none the wiser 😛 )
Damn you've got me trying to pick out my favourite accents. Not actually thought about it. I'm a sucker for accents though.
This is a whole other topic but does Ireland have its own kind of alcohol it’s proud of just like Scotland has?
Scotland‘s being whiskey ofc
Ahh, you've committed the cardinal sin there
Scotland is proud of its whisky, whereas Ireland is proud of its whiskey
_>
Lmao
It's more of a meme than anything, but a lot of Scots will point out when someone misspells whisky that comes from our country because we don't have the 'e' 😛
I know nothing about that spelling-difference
It looks downright weird to write whiskey as whisky to me
But thanks for correcting me, hopefully that sin can be forgiven 😂
Haha, but yeah, Ireland does have a strong whiskey tradition (in fact, despite Scotland having taken the reins in terms of whisky reputation, I believe it originated in Ireland)
Don't quote me on that though
I feel like me having learned German makes me so conscientious of terms that ought to have a hyphen in them like I just did there with spelling-difference (because German loves making massive words by smashing smaller words together) in German a spelling-difference is also smushed together, Rechtschreibungsunterschied 😂
I was hoping it had something entirely different from whisky
Haha, sorry to disappoint. The word whisky is from the Irish/Gaelic language btw, if you didn't know
From the word for water 😛
Doesn’t surprise me
uisge - pronounced /ɯʃgʲə/
Actually I’ve heard Whisky is actually one of the most healthy kinds of alcohol you can drink
I think I read it helps fight heart disease or something crazy like that
Hmm... can I take that as medical advice? 🙂
Interesting. I'll have to rethink my diet. 😛
I haven’t had proper whisky before, only bourbon
I'm far from a connoisseur , I stick mostly with a couple of brands I like, nothing particularly specialist.
This is probably pretty offensive, but some people here think bourbon is true whisky xD
Afaik bourbon is based off of corn
Honestly I was confused there, I had to look up bourbon. It's not a term we really use here
Tbh same but I will try something if someone recommends it
So is Jack Daniels a bourbon?
It’s kind of like an American hick‘s version of whisky tbh
Yeah it is
Haha, is it a decent representation? Because it might be my only meaningful experience of it 😛
That‘s why it‘s a „Tennessee whisky“
It’s actually really good honestly
Imo
But people often mix it like with coke, which I’m told with „true whisky“ you aren’t sUPppoSed To dO lmao
Haha, I feel like this is an elitist attitude now that I think about it, but for mixing drinks, we only mix foreign whiskeys with drinks (like Jack & Coke). I don't know anyone who'd ever mix a Scottish whisky with a drink
I should seek out a so-called true whisky and see if I can even tell the difference
Gute Nacht
It is, I kinda don’t like that about it
You can 🤷♀️
Like honestly as long as they enjoy and/or consume it and it isn’t wasted, who cares?
Maybe it was just strength for me but theres a difference between the high grade and lower grade stuff
Is it kind of like the difference between low and high-grade wine?
Yeah you can tell there too
Because cheap wine is absolutely disgusting
But does that stop me drinking cheap grog, no
I think even within Scottish whiskies you can taste differences quite easily (and drastically in some cases), nevermind between Scottish and foreign whiskies (whatever variety they might be)
Oh actually i had an Australian white that actually tasted like urine i dont recommend
Of course it'll be about production technique in the end
In Germany you can get a giant bottle of wine for 2€ but it’s the crappiest wine you’ve ever tasted, it’s not meant to taste good, just to f you up.
We have something like that here too
Its called little fat lamb and its reeeeaaaalllllly bad
But high percentage
Best German-wine ever is Glühwein doe
It’s served warm, it‘s often sold at Christmas markets
It’s like a Christmas drink tbh
Oh, have you ever heard of Buckfast? It's an infamous fortified wine produced in the UK that is beloved by neds (think... gopniks if you know the slavic reference, common meme) all over Scotland. It's funny how trashy its reputation is, given that its origin of being produced by monks in an Abbey in England
That sounds amazing actually
It’s so good
Nelken? Das ist mir ja neu
Uh no, is it horrible?
Ich wusste nicht dass man auch sie reintut
Glühwein wird gewürzt, ist heilig
Honestly, never tried it. I'm curious actually, but I was always put off by its reputation, as neds could be a nightmare if you clearly weren't one of them when I was growing up. I just wanted to know if it had any reputation outside of the UK. I don't even know if it's as popular elsewhere in the UK as in Scotland
I’ve never heard of that
Then again there are probably thousands of variations of drinks
Jo
Cloves auf Englisch
btw if you like beer, when you go to Bavarian (or if) try Weißbier @flat palm
It’s a traditional Bavarian beer
I don’t like Beer that much myself but that’s an alright one, but some people really love it
Hmm, scheint dass ich mehr Getränke mit Nelken ausprobieren muss. Kann mir Nelken in Tee oder Wein nicht vorstellen
Noted, thanks for the tip. Trying new foods/drinks/etc. is the highlight of travelling for me 😛
I just don’t prefer the taste of beer in general though, like that rotten bread taste. Really anything else I am fine with. I know some Germans who even prefer wine over beer.
I'm not the biggest fan either, but I still enjoy it on occasion. Feel like it's a mood thing for me. Honestly, rum is my go-to for a social drink
I would rather do tequila shots than drink beer also
I've only ever had good nights when tequila's been involved so I'd take that option any day of the week
Do you remember what the first thing was you ever tried
What, like first beer?
Lol, same
First alcoholic drink
What is the legal drinking age in Scotland
Hmm... no, but I was a child (I should probably clarify that in Scotland, children can legally drink from 5 years old with supervision). I'd imagine it was probably wine, red wine at church or white wine from my gran 😛
What the fuck
18 to buy, 16 to drink accompanied by a meal in a restaurant, 5 with supervision from an adult
Does anyone there realize what that can do to you when you’re still growing
That’s even crazier than in Germany
Haha. I think the general understanding is that children have little more than a taste
I was satisfied with a sip from my gran's white wine glass. And of course you only ever take a sip in church 😛
Oh ok
https://www.gov.uk/alcohol-young-people-law
"It’s illegal to give alcohol to children under 5."
I was gonna say that’s horrible for a 5 year old to have a whole drink
Seems like it's a UK thing rather than just Scotland
Honestly I think the reason for such a young age is probably because of wine at church
Oh that’s one difference though
It says there you can’t drink it in public, is that right?
In Germany it’s perfectly legal to carry around a drink on the streets.
The law on public drinking actually varies even between cities here, rather than nationally or regionally
IIRC Glasgow doesn't allow it, but Edinburgh does
Ah, it's a council-level decision, so it is regionally
Ah ok
I‘m pretty sure it’s just straight illegal everywhere in the States
You have to keep your open drinks in the house or a bar/club
Glasgow used to be the knife-crime or violence capital of Europe or something like that, back in the 90s, so that's probably why that law came in there specifically
Hi if I’m saying and you is it und du or und dir?
Highly context dependent
Depends on the context. What is the question?
Hello my name is fire fox and you
und du, in that case
what’s the difference
du is nominative, dir is dative
It depends on what role you are playing in the sentence grammatically.
If you are the subject, i.e. you are the one who has the name, then "du" for nominative case
If you are the object, i.e. "wie geht's dir", how are you [how is it to you], then dir for dative
So if I say what are you doing it’s dir?
and if I’m saying I am going to do this it’s du?
Although you wouldn’t actually say „und du“ in that case in German. More like „Mein name ist…., und wie heißt du?“
No
Would still be the subject for "what are you doing". So the subject is the person "acting" the verb. What are YOU doing = YOU are the actor, who will be doing.
You have to understand the German case system to understand how to use du/dich/dir
The pronouns correspond directly to German cases
Yeah
Yep
What channel could I use to learn basics like everything and have lessons and stuff? 🙂
This is one of those things that sound very confusing if you haven't tackled it yet, but it's honestly nowhere near as bad as it seems at first
I have done a year of German and I rlly don’t know much but I wanna take it for GCSE that’s why I joined 🙂 btw
Honestly this server is for 1. asking questions 2. practicing what you learn. It’s easier to learn grammar from like YouTube, nobody here is a professional teacher.
You can ask questions in the #questions or #questions-2 channel, people are very helpful. I'd find a book or online course to work through that deals with grammar, and ask here when you get stuck
Keep at it. It's satisfying when it clicks. And if it ever seems too confusing, don't be afraid to ask
Ich hab zu viele Nelken in meinen Tee reingetan :((
