Hello
Hallo
@wise harbor Try not to spam or the bot will mute you.
I didn’t I just said hallo.
If you post the same message a bunch of times, it will get marked as spam.
@unborn pagoda hey
shall we try? 👀
Eine sorgfältige Abwägung der Folgen einer potenziell existenzgefährdenden Entscheidung muss vorgenommen werden.
||A careful examination of the consequences of a potentially existence-threatning decision must be carried out?||
Hier schaffe ich dem zu Testenden die Möglichkeit, obenstehende Behauptung einer Prüfung zu unterziehen und aus eigener Anschauung zur Erkenntnis zu gelangen, ob er diese von Ihm selbst gestellte Leistung in seiner Gänze auch vollumfänglich erbringt.
yes. Did you google? 👀
No
Now that I had more time to think about it, I think ||thorough|| would've been better than ||careful|| here, but oh well
both are fine
I know the grammar, but not much vocabulary.
hes funi
And how is he funny? If you’re the type to think brutal dictators are funny, do us all a favour and leave the server.
hello folks!
is there anyone from Justus Liebig university?
I enrolled for the VIP program and I am curious about when the classes will begin and where I can see the time they'll start.
have you looked at their homepage? maybe you can find some info there
i'm pretty sure you can contact them as well
Wie kann Ich sagen“As much time as possible”
So schnell wie möglich.
Das wäre doch genau das Gegenteil davon.
as much time as possible = so viel Zeit wie möglich
ich dachte wegen as much as possible
thanks aldie.
I already took a look while enrolling there but I still have some doubts about the proccess.
I'll send them an email asking those questions that still lingers around :-)
does that mean "general 2 is the best"?
hallo ich bin auch neu da
hi
hi
wait so would "the" be "am" in german?
No.
The in German can be der, die, das, den, dem, depending on the sentence
wdym
these sentence fillers?
Every German word has a gender or neutral
Depending on what it is, you use "the" accordingly
Yeah
so for example
what would be the suffix of a word making it fem
like mutter iirc thats how you spell mother in german
would "er" ending make it feminine?
The word frau is feminine so you'd say "die frau"
neuter is a gender
Mann is masculine so, der mann
so do you just gotta remember what word is what gender wise or is there a way to decypher wether its mas fem or neu
You have to remember. There are patterns though
But they don't always work
but like, -ung, -heit, -keit = feminine
But to answer that, pretty much yeah
well, for occupations
i see
Not as a general rule
so in general
it's like actress vs actor
what makes a noun fem
sorry if i sound like a idiot im just tryna learn german but i dont have access to the recources to actuyally learn it as in school etc... rn bc covid
You can see that a word is feminine by the articles and the declension
die Frau = the woman
der Mann = the man
usually i would try to learn first then visit germany to help further improve my language but covid said yea no lol
would der be used in any sentence with a masculine noun?
Depending on case, but pretty much yeah
You could try looking in #resources for additional information too
Der Mann
Ich sehe den Mann
Ich verzeihe dem Mann
so what can i use as of right now to help myself learn german?
probably some resource there
like what can i use to help myself improve vocabulary and grammar?
If you're completely new to it, Duolingo could help with familiarizing words and sentences
Only insofar as you're already aware that cases are a thing, I guess?
Hm, I'm not sure since German isn't a romance language
gotcha
bc if i can help relate german to latin it would help me as im fluent in latin japanese and english
yes
im aware of gender case that basic stuff
German does have articles though, unlike Latin, which complicates things somewhat.
What does Latin do instead?
Well, only as far as the vocabulary is concerned, but Dutch grammar is much simpler than German grammar.
okay
It doesn't use articles, just like most Slavic languages don't use articles.
would knowing icelandic help
Wouldn't it be easier to invest all that time into just learning German instead?
no i speak icelandic
How does it differentiate between definite and indefinite?
kinda 50/50
Yeah, I guess it does, since you have exactly the same four cases. They may work somewhat differently in Icelandic, though.
Uh, Icelandic is Germanic so maybe
what i mean is like do any of these languages relate because thats hot i helped myself learn some languages by relating them to others to help remember things
Yeah, Icelandic is more closely related to German than Latin is.
ok thank you
so i should just run duolingo for a few months for now before actually like trying to speak it?
Duolingo has its limits, but I guess it can't hurt to use it if you're just starting out.
gotcha
ill use duolingo for now then and advance myself in some way later
thank you for the suggestions and help guys :)
appreciate it
Good luck
Yes.
Most of the time it's pronounced as "f", actually.
"Vogel" (bird) is pronounced as "Fogel".
Same with "Vater" (father).
Also, I should tell you that as a German native, Icelandic is not all that intelligible to me, especially compared to Swedish or Danish, so I don't know how much your knowledge of Icelandic will actually help you with learning German as far as vocabulary is concerned.
yea vocab in my opinion is practice but grammar similarities does help me learn languages
idk why but it helps me
There will always be some similarities though, such as Icelandic "faðir", compared to English "father" and German "Vater". You can see that they're all related.
yea i mean in grammar tho
ive heard german is hard to learn if yoyure a native english person
Does Icelandic use articles, by the way?
thats why im tryna use as many resources as i can rn
definitite articles declentions
Did you answer this Raven?
Hmm, all right. In German, both the definite and indefinite articles can be declined (put into cases).
iirc it is added to the end of the word in icelandic
indeed
like this
That's common for North Germanic languages.
gotta doenload the language on my pc rq
ok so like in icelandic instead of saying "are you a penguin?" in english. you would say "ertu mörgæs?" in icelandic if i recall
i may have used the wrong word
"Bist du ein Pinguin?" in German.
I can already see similarities, such as the verb coming first.
yes
but the wods like a as well as an are not individual words in icelandic
you would add them to the end of the noun
Yes.
yes
im a idiot
wdym
Ertu looks like are you, but as one word
And the definite article is appended to the end of the noun, whereas in German it comes before the noun as a separate word, just like in English.
correct
Sástu húsið? (Did you see the house)
Sahst du das Haus? (literally)
Hast du das Haus gesehen? (more common)
the one thing that i do mess up often is accent marks in languages like diacritics
Well, good thing German has only ä, ö and ü.
tbh i just forget to add them lol
ä, ö, ü are the reason why I choose german than dutch😆
dutch orthography is so confusing. If I learned them, it would not be so bad, but there are too many darn repeating vowels in that language
Yep, therefore german is better
I heard Duch grammar is easier, so there is a trade-off of ease in reading vs. in speaking
Uhh, yep many pro-contra
But the one that I know. They are so similiar like indonesian and melayu
We don’t have cases so probably yep
Is causality shown purely by weird order?
Honestly German noun gender, noun strength, and verb strength are imo way harder to learn than cases, even when you count prepositions
Our sentence structure is pretty much the same as german:
Ich gebe ihm einen Apfel
Ik geef hem een appel
The dutch therefore generally speaking do not have much trouble with word order etc. When it comes to german
Baum? 🌳
hallo
Hallo
hallo
Hallo
German doesn't have a strict subject-verb-object order like English does.
Hallo alles
alle*
alles is never for people
I find that both good and bad
I tried learning turkish once and i gave up because i couldnt adjust to the word order
oh yeah it's far from English word order isn't it?
Am Dienstag habe ich meine B1 Prüfung, Haben sie etwas Tipps?
If you haven't already, try memorizing some last-minute Redewendungen.
For example, come up with alternatives for expressing your opinion. Instead of "Ich denke," try stuff like "Meiner Meinung/Ansicht nach," or "Ich vertrete die Meinung, dass...," usw.
Hadn't considered that. Thanks!
Em okey, now its not typo. 😶
in some cases its the exact reverse of english
turkish is so whack its great
yeah
basically clauses are backwards its really fun
elbise is a dress too
takım elbise is definitly a suit tho
i found the image online so it could definitely be wrong
This may sound silly, but I view it as a sort of phrasing. kinda like how Yoda phrases his sentence
if that's factual that is
That image is hilarious and the translation is mostly correct, it's how people try to teach English to beginners in Turkey: "guys: think of it like the order of everything is reversed"
a few words could be changed but yeah
How do people get access to the voice chats? 😐
I searched that sentence with other languages and most of the languages make sentences in reverse than English.
May be the reason for people making funny word order sentences in Englsh.
Both feels natural after a while once you get comfortable with the languages
I guess that goes for everything but eh
Mostly Asian languages.
Euro languages have similar structure barring a few changes here and there.
Takes time.
Around ten minutes I suppose.
Morgen
this is genius, im gonna use that for making turkish sentences now
fun fact, the word for kite in german is the same for dragon
hey any native german? please dm me please
hey
moin
Can someone recommend good junk food(in Germany)
I have just moved and would like to try some good chips and chocolates

Iss Döner mit den Jungs
Chips you can either get Pringles or Naturals from Lorenz
Chocolate uhh Ritter Sport is pretty good and also versatile
Is it too sweet?
Bitter chocolates with almonds or something are preferable! :3
Lol, Alleine ist besser
I mean if you can find it
but I think ritter sport mostly makes normal chocolate
Okay okay
I tried Kaufland's hazelnut chocolate
Wasn't the best ngl
Sounds like a Billigmarke lol
Ritter Sport chocolate 😍
Whenever I spot it anywhere I buy God knows how many bars
Not letting it get away
How bitter is it?
schön schön
BSJABSKANDAKDNAKSJAHDJWHS
KŞADAHLADAJŞADAKŞADAŞG
I wouldn't really say that it is at all (or maybe very slightly? But that's, of course, quite common when it isn't proper dairy milk chocolate)
Mhmm
Okay!
If you get a chance, I suggest you at least give it a try. (The price is also very reasonable for what you're getting, so really there's nothing to lose). 😊
Yeah I'll try it :3
When I lived there, I became addicted to Chipsfrisch Asiatisch Gesmachk, and they were only about a Euro, so many were bought haha
I'll try it out :3
Thank you!
I always bought it at Penny-Markt, so maybe check there. It just has this vague curry flavor, which I liked
Sounds spicy?
Not really tbh. I found that German products were more likely than not to be mild.
you're telling me
i bought a spice shaker that was crushed red peppers - in the usa it would be hella spicy. it barely adds any spice. i'm better off just adding more pepper
Hi. I'm here to learn german and do nothing else. what channels would be best if I want to discuss stuff like that
I studied german for 2 years but it's been almost 2 years since i've studied it and i've forgotten quite a bit of it
I would assume #german-only and anything under learning and resources would be good right?
yeah, the two questions channels are good for any help you need
@wraith talon "What are some good videos/audio tracks I can listen to and take notes from"
Easy German videos have subtitles in both German and English. If you're on desktop, you can move the browser down so that the English subtitles are covered and you can only see the German ones.
Easy German podcast is explicitly for learners--they speak fairly clearly, they enunciate fairly well, and they talk a bit slow. There's also a transcript if you subscribe to their Patreon.
There's also Coffee Break German, where one of the hosts is himself a German learner, and they literally work through a passage with you, breaking it down word-by-word often.
@wraith talon Can you explain some things about why you feel you can't learn it?
1: I’m not good at anything
2: I’m almost 18 and have accomplished nothing with my life
3: there were several grammatical errors in my example
4: one sentence was “unintelligible”
5: I haven’t studied German in almost 2 years
6: when I speak or write, something always goes wrong
A more realistic goal for when to have accomplished something is like 30 or so.
Like on average, I'd say 30 is a good age for most people.
So don't stress about being 18 without accomplishments.
And let's be honest, it's pretty clear that point number 5 explains points 3, 4, and 6.
You would be superhuman if you didn't study and were fluent.
But you're not superhuman. You're a normal person who has to study to learn.
And if you study, you'll learn. It's as simple as that.
Yes, it's frustrating because it takes time and effort and you make a lot of mistakes. Same for me. Same for everyone.
I've been studying for years and I still make tons of mistakes.
Mistakes are part of the journey
Mistakes are the journey
If you can't psychologically handle mistakes, then that's your true obstacle. And we can't help with that. That's something you'd need to work through with a therapist.
And it’s just like, I thought I did well and had a decent understanding of the language, because I did well in my classes. But obviously that’s false
On the other hand, if you're just frustrated and annoyed because of some mistakes, that's normal. You can just push through it and keep going and improve.
2 years ago. Knowledge doesn't stick around forever. A language is something you have to keep practicing all the time or it fades away.
And I can listen to others speak and read German writing and almost entirely understand it
That's great. That's a positive.
But when I speak it I forget words, word order is wrong, etc
If half your skills are good, you're in a great place. You just have to work on the other skills and get them to the same level.
Thanks for trying to help me
I had a rough day today, so ending it on a good note will ease my conscience.
Lol
- Don’t quit if you’re passionate about something 2. recognize that mistakes are inevitable
Yeah
Danke schön
❤️
There was actually a time, like 3 years ago, where I thought I was better at German than I actually was, and I got DMed by a mod that I needed to change my role back to B, because I was making too many mistakes that an average C level doesn’t, but after all this time, look where I‘ve ended up by just not giving up.
Nowadays, when I am bored I like helping people out with German and there’s rarely a time where someone else who is native or C Level completely objects to an explanation I give to someone regarding their question
Good work @tardy palm
♥️
@wraith talon (this was to try and help show you that everyone used to be in your shoes)
@wraith talon If you got question about the German language I guess you always can DM someone from who you think they can help you
You have to recognize as well that when people correct you, it’s not coming from a place of disrespect or hatred, that’s just you being like, „wow, I hate being wrong“.
It's fine if someone offers to DM but we generally discourage people DMing randomly and prefer they use #questions or #questions-2 .
Tbf nobody likes being wrong lol
I have had to learn to drop my ego when a native is correcting me @wraith talon it takes a while to get used to I can tell you that, especially when you’re used to never doing that 😂
It will help you in the long run
Or just this option, just ask pls. I hate it If people don't talk when they got question...
Hmm, I wouldn't say that. When I was a beginner here, I would sometimes intentionally write sentences in a different way, even if I knew a "correct" way to say it, just to see if it would be wrong or a mistake. I think being curious and respecting the power of mistakes is a great way to boost your learning.
Mistakes are a tool that you should use to your advantage.
As I said earlier, mistakes are really just your friends in disguise.
I should’ve said “nobody likes being wrong when they’re almost certain they’re right”
They aren’t what they seem to be, you can’t test yourself down for not knowing something you’ve never even learned or fully grasped before
Tear*
I think the real problem there is not being wrong, but the assumption that you're right, lol.
Oh sorry
My advice for you right now is to just never assume with so much certainty that you're correct. I mean, you didn't study for 2 years. Of course you won't be able to know if you're wrong or not.
It would be unreasonable to expect yourself to be right.
It’s ok to not know how something works. You aren’t born being all-knowing. Language learning is a fantastic way to actually humble yourself, and realise you really don’t know everything.
In that case, the issue is the order of events.
The goal is not to be correct at the start. The goal is to be correct at the end.
So it doesn't matter if you make a mistake the first time you write something, or the tenth time, or the hundredth time. It matters that you reach the point where you get it correct.
So if you try out writing something, and someone corrects you, then you just learned the correct way to do it.
So in that exchange, you're correct.
At least, if we consider the outcome, which is the important part.
I also want to be correct. But how I do that is by making mistakes and finding the right answers. Once I go through that process, that's when I become correct, which is what I want. 😄
To me, that just makes sense.
Thanks for being so helpful
I was feeling extremely dejected about the German language earlier
I genuinely feel better about it now
Thanks for that
Even when you reach a high-level, you honestly never stop being corrected, but there does come a point where you sort of intentionally search out being corrected. Like for example we have sentences posted in #study-tasks, I did the last ones there, and a native and I went through them in a voice call. I only wrote one of them completely perfectly, I think the second one, because they’re actually extremely difficult to translate, but that’s normal, if I hadn’t been wrong with a single aspect of it, I would’ve learned nothing because well then I would’ve had nothing needing to be corrected. The point is you never really escape learning something new, no matter how experienced you are. I find it funny that sometimes even in English people who live somewhere totally different than me would say something in a certain way, even though for me it sounds strange af.
Also I apologize if I speak English too much
It is my native language so it’s kinda how I best understand things
I do know some Swedish as well, but I’d much rather speak English lmao
I have found the more you force yourself out of your comfort zone, e.i. not defaulting to English when you’re unsure of how to say something, the more you learn stuff, granted the other person actually corrects you.
Yeah, one method some people use is choosing specific days of the week where they speak only German.
So like, you know, Monday and Friday, or whatever.
Then you have those times where you get to force yourself to practice, but it's not completely overwhelming.
I wish they were as close as espanol and portuguese so i could talk to them

@molten sun, as the name implies #german-only is for German only, so do keep it that way please.
Gute gramatik bücher?

Yes
yeah i failed school 😭 that was because i couldnt speak german
im doing an apprenticeship now
Oh I'm sorry 😭
Where are you from ?
Ohhh
Hello
Question about learning methods to people here. I find that consuming content to learn a language is better and it also keeps me entertained while helping me learn vocab.
But it's hard to find content in german as I barely have a netflix subscription and I struggle with conventional methods of learning like using text books.
maybe try to look for German YouTubers 👀
Should I look for a course or just bear with learning vocabulary first while watching content?
Such as?
I can recommend easy german
I love Hazel & Thomas. If you're into documentaries I'd recommend: WDR (auch WDR Doku); Y-Kollektiv.
god I'm so bored
I'm going to read the lotr again
better yet, Imma listen to the audiobook
Yes, aldi will not find us here @shell abyss!
Today she woke up and she said I cannot believe I am not going on a treasure hunt and she was crying in voice chat and I had to tell her no aldi stop crying. It was very tiring, so I don't want her to cry again.
@sudden panther I think you can care less about that.
It was you, who started not to invite her.
There was no talk about it in this mission
Yes, but you know how it is when people cry. They just cry and you have to say no it's okay. @shell abyss
Oh
I feel bad when people cry.
It's sad
@sudden panther I have got one clue how to explore true treasure .
- We should practice 10000 times the skill set used to do the searching
That is smart @shell abyss. Have you found the treasure?
Yeah but what can you do. Life is tough, you can't always go treasure hunting. Aldi should learn to accept that and stop crying, do you agree?
@sudden panther this is a forced emotion case.
You are bringing Aldi in this story. And then making her feel left out.
Is this a trick
Well you had the chance to say okay aldi you can come, but still, if she cannot come, she should accept that, yes.
Well I think the 10000 times practice of skill set is only beginning of the search adventure. You can see it is going to be tough
Yes very tough. Does the skill set include fighting a snake? I had to fight a snake once.
@sudden panther I have a secret tour guide map, one faithful companion, and hope with me for now
I hope I don't have to handle snake.
Why are you fighting with snake
Ok aarem
I will go and think about some plan, bye
╙☺
eine ziemliche kuriose Unterhaltung oben
Yea, I totally learned my German thru anime, lol
Haha, natürlich, aber ich schaue Anime mit deutschen Untertiteln
wo findest du die?
Netflix
Ach so, du lebst in DE
Jup, in Nordrhein-Westfalen
ich bin ein bisschen Eifersüchtig, ich muss immer ein VPN benutzen aber es geht immer nicht
Hmm ..
Aber es gibt mehrere Videos bei YT, die Anime mit deutschen Untertiteln zeigen
Vielleicht kannst du die suchen
ja, wäre sehr cool, wenn ich mir Food Wars oder Attack on Titan schauen könnte
HAHA
Food Wars!
Food Wars fucking rules

It was a joke, I don't learn my German thru anime
But .. it does contribute somewhat
I usually enjoy old animes, any recommendations would be helpful.
Legends of the Galactic Heroes?
I'll look into it thx.
Alpha male recommendatjon
Gaming works and anime too. I like daily lifestyle blogs too.

Heey I've been too shy/lazy to participate in this discord, but I'm gonna hafta take an a1 test on the 30th to be an au pair, my native German boyfriend thinks I'll do great, but i feel I've been slacking
You can always join the voice chats and talk to other people or take part of the lessons
Is there a list of rules/directions somewhere cuz I'm not super used to discord in general n feel like I'll do it wrong somehow😅
Or like a schedule/calendar perhaps?
From what I gather there's new ones everyday, if I'm not wrong it looks like the ones now are for b2, so i guess I'd go back and do older simpler ones?
.

I feel very left out, vik
Oh no vik she found us run run run.
@sudden panther I am very tired, I can't run now arem
@sharp lantern you don't worry aldi. It's just a journey unplanned, and may be unpleasant

https://tweakers.net/nieuws/181152/bol-punt-com-trapte-in-phishingmail-en-maakte-750000-euro-over-naar-oplichters.html
Der Artikel, zwar auf Niederländisch, aber du könntest den Artikel übersetzen
Das witzige daran war, dass die E-Mail ziemlich viele Fehler enthielt

For German Native Speakers
When you say "so" in German naturally, do you say it with an s sound or with a z sound
Please react with an S or a Z on the comment
@naive pulsar my Airup finally arrived. I hope it works
why z
never z
Wait are you thinking z in german
wha
My bad i meant s and z in English
wym
S in german sounds like z in English right
nein
eh
the german Z is kinda different from the english one yes
German S can be an English sounding s or z depending on where in the word it is, but German z is neither the English s or z
i am now; confused.
Yes exactly, so in the word so in german, what is the sound of S
s
When I've heard so I've heard it with an English sounding s and with a german z before.
In terms of being correct, I think it should be pronounced like an English z with an emphasis on the o?
i guess
Was geht leude
I think I read that if the s comes after a consonant it becomes more like an English s, however. I'm sure a quick Google is a little more helpful than me though xD
was geeht
s oder z Probleme?
Yup
Oh Gott xD
Maybe Google the definition and have it pronounce it for you?
Ive been taught s in the beginning is like the English z but everyone says so like English so
Ich bin so nervös
Z has a "tssss" sound
No forget the Z in german
Zebra
Im saying Z in English as a reference for the sound
Yeah that sounds good
Good luck xD
Thanxx xD
👀
Me trying to properly pronounce ch like a proper German
As long as there are no Ks in it, you're doing miles better than some
I saw a review of a german learning book saying that "Ick" is the hoch Deutsch pronunciation yesterday 😂
It's not
No I know
It was hilarious to read that someone thought that
I'm saying did the book really say that?
Oh no a reviewer said that, but apparently the CD pronounced it like "eek"
So bad reviewer and bad CD/book
Oh jeez. Lemme find some gems from my book with bad pronunciation guides
Wirklich - verklikh (I can't see the bad ones now because I pronounce them right in my head so the guide manages to sound right)
And this same book also has Ich as Ikh
Nice, ive got the black one. Does it work?
naja sehr schwach
Echt??

Hi
spielt jemanden hier valorant?

@hot cloak Hi how are you?
I see that you like linux
You heard that eac now has linux support?
Quite good, tomorrow's weekend. And you?
Yeah and I'm very happy about it
Currently Cinnamon and KDE (I use both Mint and Fedora on 2 disks) but I also like GNOME
that's good
gentoo/dwl
Ohh that's nice
dwl is dwm but for wayland
How long it takes you to compile Gentoo?
the kernel is like 20 mins
firefox ~ 40(if you use the normal version)
there are precompiled versions available
I didn't know
So not really long I guess
no, not really
but only if you start from scratch
if you only change a few options, it won't have to recompile much
Maybe I'll try Gentoo once
i wouldn't reconment it if you are using cinnamon
i'd first at least try arch
Arch is actually quite easy to install, mostly just following instructions
gentoo on the other hand is a bit harder
@simple atlas thanks!
hi
Hello
Heyo

You were muted by the bot

i just made reactions
after texting for a long time
aber egal passt ich versuch kein "xd" mehr zu schreiben

@runic garden liest nur du oder jeder? Bin verwirrt 😂
I only know how to say my name in German how can i improve myself in speaking and grammer
teachers, textbooks
for grammar
for speaking practicing with other german speaking people and immersing yourself in the language by using it in your daily life is a good way to learn i think
there are a couple important grammar rules you can learn quickly, such as when to put a verb at the end of the sentence
Thank you i'll do my best

Yeah sure, you can dm me if you want.

Niemand ist da um zu reden würde ich sagen

Nicht nur german only, sondern auch casual und study group
