Ich garantiere dir, dass das niemand von dir erwartet, denn dafür müssten sie es selbst wissen
@hot cloak
Haben darüber eine Arbeit geschrieben….
Ja, aber da macht ihr ja nicht alle Regeln
es ist zu schnell haha
Das waren aber gefühlt schon zu viele
Ja, gut, das kann sein.
aber es gut für mich
War so, bekomme die morgen wahrscheinlich wieder…
https://www.duden.de/sprachwissen/rechtschreibregeln

Was hab ich verpasst? xD

You wanna speak?
anything i just want improve me
It does indeed.
Happy note — I’ve already done 2 interviews today and have 2 more to go.
Exciting note — my final interview with a German company to get a visa and move there should be next Wednesday.
Concerned note — I probably need to start doing some babysitting or temp work at a restaurant if I land the Germany job seeing as I don’t have a lot of money in the bank atm.
you changed your pfp
also i thought only npcs are here what are you doing
oh this must be co op
Absolutely. Also, I just dropped the Halloween costume PFP lmao
I can add the bird back tho

hey. How is it living in germany?🤷♀️ I live in sweden and my parent are thinking of moving there. Is someone avaible to talk about it?:)
i think you might find something in #1033125270217048246
https://yourdailygerman.com/german-word-order/ i found this super ambitious looking blog post series about word order (and also about why all explanations for nicht position are wrong based on this understanding) that looks super interesting! Any thoughts ya'll?
It fits quite well with other scholarly texts i've glanced at
warning though you can only read 2 posts in a week and you need at least 5 posts to get the whole thread including the nicht stuff
They’re good, but there’s a reason I use a mix of websites for my grammar instruction. Free shit haha.
this is amazingg thank youu
hahaha
how to learn a new language without spent any amount of money 101
I say free shit but like, I’ve probably dropped about $120+ on learning German so far ngl and plan to drop around 2500€ on Goethe lessons and certifications soon.

Prolly more like 4500€ ngl. I’m probably gonna need to take their B1 lessons.
if you want some honest advice, hire someone on italky to help you reach your desired Niveau. German courses in Germany are overly expensive. italky would cost less and do the same job
I've spent a total of around 900 on the language, including one certification exam, and it's doable in much less time and money with what I've experienced
I hella appreciate that.
@native stirrup You can use #1028991097277513770 for posting music.
thats like 1/4 of education in a uni
i took german in school so it costed me 0 to get B1 level certificate, so mb reconsider zour spendings on learning
Use that money to buy a loudspeaker
Nice. Was it at a Uni in Germany?
Yeah i gave a cost of education for uni in Germany (Jacobs University Bremen)
Ah wait no school itself wasn’t in Germany
It was required at my school when I was pupil
Lucky
German wasn’t offered in any of my schools.
On an interesting note, I inadvertently convinced my siblings to move to Germany.
If they move there, I know they’ll sponsor me. They have a better shot than I do because they’ve been in their professions longer.

Apparently all it took to convince them was talking about the same stuff that made me wanna go and then explaining how their daughter will be affected when she hits our age.
Didn’t even intend to convince them — it just did.
Me: ya know, Europe’s pretty neat
Them: sold
Me: oh…?
Them: ✈️
Me: 👀
Them: ✅
We can work something out lol
xDD ehrlich soo ne? when i think why i want to move to europe rn, traveling is the thing that excites me the most
and ausschließlich Germany because i like how it's economy works to a certain degree relative to other countries i could've moved to
the traveling thing is honestly so insane that the people there almost unknowingly take it for granted. a close relative of mine lives there, and he always soo casually mentions that hey, we're actually having an Urlaub in Italy. (jup, no big deal). they went to Switzerland once and mentioned that months later because it wasn't that big of a deal
That was the selling point for them tbh. Free education and more worker protections.
They have a daughter and want her to be able to start her life when she’s old enough and ready.
Kann man hier Gif-Animierte Bilder verbreiten?
kommt darauf an. Wenn sie mit dem Gespräch zu tun haben, dann schon, aber auch dann nicht zu viel davon
@chilly elm dont wanna respond in introduction, but the people here are very awesome and handsome and nicesome, im sure you'll be able to overcome your nervous thoughts 😁
thank you for reassuring! everyone already seems nice so im looking forward to that❤️
oh nice! das ist sehr gut i hope we get along then @hot cloak
@chilly elm 🌸

May anyone recommend me any german song? I've been struggling a lil bit to find something that fits my taste
Just something to listen, sing and practice pronounciation
I am into jazz, bossa nova, pop (joji, billie, the weeknd) and classical
There's this playlist.
I found a couple songs I like because of it.
Oh thanks
You can also just search "German Jazz songs" for example. There will most likely be a playlist of one.
alter wie viel Musik Leute hören
Wie definierst du genau "Musik Leute"? Ich finde es nur eine interessante Beschreibung, das so zu nennen
Aber ich würde auch sagen, ich höre mehr, als der normale Mensch so hört
hey there
Hey
Hi. I just joined a few minutes ago.
I've wanted to go to school for German since 2020, but it wasn't possible.
Because of the pandemic, you know. As far as I'm concerned, learning a foreign language remotely doesn't really work because everyone has a different level of connection quality and a different level of familiarity with the remote format.
This server appears to be a more casual approach, which suits me just fine.
Classical? „Leck mich im Arsch“ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lmao
hä heißt das Lied wirklich so
bestimmt nicht
wieso würd Mozart sowas nennen xD
I thought that was a quote from Götz von Berlichingen, the mercenary.
Vielleicht ließ Mozart sich von ihm inspirieren 🤣
Wow. Herr Mozart was quite a guy.
Götz was probably an inspiration for Guts from the manga Berserk, too.
With that iron hand and all.
I‘ve never actually watched Berserk but love Guts memes
And Mozart‘s sense of humor
We‘re all 12 years old in our hearts
Do you like any contemporary German music? It's fun to sing along with lyrics that I don't fully understand.
Sometimes. I haven‘t found anything new I‘m into recently but was really into Wir Sind Helden and Kraftklub in high school
I relate to the singing along to things you don’t understand, like I have almost a year streak on Duolingo French because I found a bunch of French music I like but needed to learn the pronunciation rules to properly sing along lol
Also worth learning some Schlagertexte if you‘re in Germany because the experience of singing Schlager with a bunch of drunk Germans is….einzigartig
German sounds like a very precise language to me. Moreso than English, and much more so than French. I like how there are far fewer silent letters in German.
In some ways, French pronunciation is easier than English in that its rules seem pretty set, whereas English arbitrarily uses either French-like or more Germanic rules
I don’t want to say Romance language rules because Spanish is pretty phonetically spelled
The trouble with English is that we‘re not consistent with our silent letters
As far as I can tell, the majority of German words are spelt pretty much like how they sound. With French, I'm always surprised.
I wouldn’t necessarily say French pronunciation makes sense, but there’s at least a decent level of consistency in where they write unnecessary letters. German pronunciation does make sense most of the time, wofür ich noch immer dankbar bin
e
i agree with you 😔
french is just abstract art
you take an E, you take an A and you take an U and it makes O
and at the end it means "water"
o
uh hello, so im thinking of going to germany for my under graduation (computer science), i just wanna know if choosing automobile engineering for under graduation is harder or easier than computer science?
I can't help you with that, but I'd like to go to Germany after saving some money. Ever been there before?
What apps if any do you(s) use for german. Currently enjoying duolingo, the pathway version on ipad. Go bored of babbel.
Is busuu any good?
I have Grammatik aktiva and assimil pdf too
My comprehension is decent just writing/speaking i sound like a child 😦
Pretty sure most aren’t used, like in the Chinese dictionary.
I did mandarin in high school.
U dont need to learn 50,000 characters lol.
Dont know if this is allowed, but i recently drew this for a friend. Im trying to build a social media portfolio so if allowed dm me with a pic and ill gladly make a portrait for you x

Dont they have like 5 different speaking styles based on who ur speaking to?
Anyone else teach their language?
make a portrait of me 😍
German conjugation is hard ;-; can someone tell me easy ways to learn it?
Honestly the best way is to just use German a lot
There are a lot of irregular forms that you have to just memorise
Ohhkay 🫡
Like having a lot of conversations in German?
Yeah, and hearing/listening to it a lot
There are just too many irregular things (like English), you have to learn it one step at a time
Which conjugations are you learning right now? Is it just present tense or something else?
Yeah haha
Ich will den Schwarzweld sehen.
Hullooo, how come #general-2 is so active right now?
Ich mag Bäume und Tiere.
Keine Ahnung :D
Currently i am doing present tense
Sure thankyou!!
faq present tense
Präsens (Present Tense)
When you use a verb in a sentence (or clause), you have to conjugate it (change the form) to match the subject of the sentence (or clause).
For example, in English, we write I eat but he/she eats. The verb has a different ending! The concept is the same in German, except German has more endings.
The first thing you need to know in order to conjugate verbs is: which ending fits which subject? Here is a simple verb “trinken” (to drink) as an example:
trinken
ich trinke
du trinkst
er/sie/es trinkt
wir trinken
ihr trinkt
sie trinken / Sie trinken
(Note: the conjugation for sie (they) and Sie (formal you) is always the same)
Vowel/Stem Changes
There are a few variations and exceptions, but the most important is vowel changes (also called stem changes). Some verbs get a vowel change, which only affects the du and er/sie/es forms of the verb. (However, modal verbs and wissen have their own special pattern, which also has a vowel change in the ich form.)
Example: ich schlafe, du schläfst
Other Changes
There are various other differences but I can’t describe them all here, so please read these websites or use Google to find more information: https://www.vistawide.com/german/grammar/german_verbs_present_tense.htm
https://www.thoughtco.com/german-present-tense-verbs-4074838

Check this out first. If it doesn't help, feel free to ask in #questions for help. But try to identify exactly what part of it you find confusing, that way it's easier to help.
THANKYOU SO MUCH
Yes sure
This is a set of beginner lessons I've run a few times on the server. If you go to the Lesson 1 folder and open the Homework document, it will have some exercises you can do. Some of those are for present tense and you might find it helpful.
Ohkayy, I'll do those exercises!
Sure just dm a selfie
Exactly, like, after a while using German expressions, that's also modified my accent in Portuguese, somehow 😂
Mostly because of the fricatives, in there they are active in r-between vowels and not between vowels.
As seen in: ''Rato'' and ''Coração'', which means first, Mause and second Herz.
In Portuguese, we can use another word for heart, but, borrowed from French and used more in day-by-day speech with friends and family, fair enough.
🥱
I dont want to interrupt gen one but hi :0 I'm excited to be here! I used to take German for 2 years but I didn't get very far because 1- its middle/high school German and 2- im semi non verbal and schools force you to speak verbally, I got a lot of points off because when I get anxious I lose my voice, so I kind of bombed the second year I did it

Guten Abend
hello, can somebody help me in DM to understand a german song? it's from soundcloud and google doesn't have it's lyrics 🙂
Guten Abend
Ich habe gerade gelernt, dass es ein deutsches Wort für Pfannkuchen gibt.
Ich bin hungrig. Tschüss erstmal.
Hast du Kaiserschmarrn probiert?Es ist mega lecker
Hallo! Guten abend
been reading articles on the words schon and noch today! Very exciting words! Probably not the kinds of deep dives one should be doing in one's first month of learning a language, but anyway
although the word noch shows up some quite early in Nicos Weg!
was geht digga
Nein, aber danke für deinen Vorschlag.
Yes.
oh its 100% wrong sounding to me as well...but i got used to it since moving over....my people back in US will hear it sometimes when on VC and they trip out...its funny
Yeah I can imagine that.
They also made fun of me for eating thick fries.....not the most mature of friends..but the only kind of friends to have
there are some restrictions that can't be easily outmanouvred on a legislative level but it has been declared an official goal of the current coalition afaik
It has been declared a goal....but its still in the works on the legalization process....should hear more about it during this year...but its not an immediate thing...if we are lucky, it could be here in the next 2 years or so if it all gets hammered out....
That’s odd that they’d do that
Also...legal or not its abundant lol....afaik its illegal to posses it but not to smoke it....and in many places you can smell it, especially in Berlin
(Not saying ignore laws, just general information. As someone from California where its legal, i do miss it but avoid any potention legal issues by simply avoiding it in country)
Also, its super easy to hop on a train depending what part of Germany you are in to Amsterdam for a recreational weekend
which if you think about it is funny....cause you go to Coffee shops for marijuana....but its also illegal there, so its like otay..choose sides already so i can avoid any trouble

There were so many researches along it, and even one concerns the representation of the problem in terms of theory of groups (didn't help)
is there anyone who is doing master in medical informatics in degendroff institute of technology?

Hi server, does anyone have any idea for if the Duolingo German levels align with the CEFR levels? For example, if I say I am on unit 27 in Duolingo, what does that say about my CEFR level?
I feel like I'm ready for A2, but I don't have enough vocabulary.
German Duolingo covers only A1 and a small amount of A2 topics.
https://blog.duolingo.com/how-well-does-duolingo-teach-speaking-skills/
From 2021 but yeah, what Base said
Learning a language on Duolingo is fun, totally free, and research shows it's
effective, too! Last year we shared results
[https://blog.duolingo.com/how-well-does-duolingo-work/] about how learners who complete
Unit 5 have reading and listening scores equivalent to four semesters of
university language classes.
We've just completed a new
Just keep in mind this blog post covers the French and Spanish courses, which have a higher rating than the German course.
German course is rated at A1 only.
I see, thank you for the information
Come to #general since this channel is a bit slow
i was thinking about asking about other people who learn or know both swedish and german, since the two languages are so similar it's a bit extra interesting for me to discuss it with others who have the same overlap in languages
btw side question one user just asked why german "sounds angry" in both of the channels intended for actual questions. How does the moderator team want users to handle such situations?
HI LILITH!
I've been using Duolingo to familiarize myself with the way the language is structured/sounds. But it definitely won't make me conversational 😂
It's a good resource for tho
what about flash academy
next big hole in my grammar that i'm excited to fill: all these words with separable prefixes or whatever they're called. There's a lot of them, and i don't quite understand why and how they separate yet, so looking forward to that
Duolingo is good to learn some basic words but even if you complete the full language course you will still be considered a beginner. Best to use Anki and have some tutoring of some sort
Imo
I’ve been using Duolingo for now. I’ve checked out Rosetta Stone and LingQ as well. LingQ was pretty good, but I only wanted to pay for one thing at a time. I supplement Duolingo with YouTube videos from YourGermanTeacher for grammar lessons. I’m going to check out Nicos Weg now.
Anki?
Flashcard app that helps with memory. Best for vocabulary learning
Grammar and etc. best taught through lessons

Can one stream something from ARD/ZDF in VC?
https://www.ard.de/die-ard/nutzungsbedingungen-ard-de-100/
Yes
Oh great! Thanks.
Were there movie/series nights at some point? Or has that never happened yet?
Yes, they happen now and then.
The other day I streamed documentaries.
Noted! Oh, I saw one of them, about fauna
👁️
Lingq is a good one but you have to pay after a short time
Yeah, one cool feature with LingQ is being able to do translations and it creating a lesson out of it. I would do that with song lyrics.
Exactly 💯

what happened to general?
Hello guys, sorry its a little bit of topic, but i want to ask something, i know that download pirated movies is illegal and will be fined in german, but is streaming movies will get fined too?
ja

Im sorry?

r/germany: English-language discussions and news relating to Germany and German culture.
Hallo
Which of these is correct and why:
- Ich geschlafe den ganzen Tag
- Ich habe den ganzen Tag geschlafen
I want to say, "I slept the whole day"
the second, because the first isn't grammatical and not the form you (probably) intended
in english the simple past and the past participle of 'sleep' (and other verbs, but not all) use the same form, in german this is not so
the first sentence as you presumably intended it, with the Präteritum, would be "Ich schlief den ganzen Tag" and that would then be grammatical.
the choice between "Ich schlief den ganzen Tag" and "Ich habe den ganzen Tag geschlafen" (and most other cases of Präteritum or Perfekt) is one of the type of situation: Präteritum (the first variant) is more common in writing then in speech, so this would sound unusual in a casual conversation

Thanks for the explanation!
Doing some of it using Duolingo, but not strictly
I think I'm ready for A 2 though
I‘m doing A2 of Nicos Weg in addition to Duolingo
I definitely need more conversation listening practice though.
me but my school teaches
@hot cloak I recommend „language transfer“ It is very helpful for learning naturally. I took a little bit of the Greek Course, however I imagine the German one is also good! Free on appstore 😄
language transfer is awesome
my spanish teacher recommended it and I passed with a 98 in the class
10/10 would recommend 👌
spanish 2 btw
hallo
Oh cool, thanks for the resource!
Bitte schön!
So, how to say thank you in German like a native
Danke
NAWWWWWWW
just had a massive realization
....August 19 happens to be my birthday
i am losing my mind
Kou's Geburtstag
August gang August gang
AYYYYYYY
Imagine if you were born in a time before planes were invented.
I think there's a reason why my soul chose this specific point in time.
you...you could choose?
wtf :') why didn't anyone tell me this
i think i would have picked the day before the extinction of humans
Hiiiii
you didn't know?
Hello @shy elk, please note that any kind of generalizing or discriminatory content is not allowed on the server, even if you later brush it off as a "joke". We're a learning community, and we don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable.
ai shi ya ok
what
today i'm going straight against all advice i got and doing a deep dive into her and hin 🥳
my sentence?
Yes that is self evident
i assume Pati is referring to something else
Same
👀
you were talking about my sentence? what kind of passive aggressive bullshit is that wtf, you're pinging other people to "help you out" when i'm right here?
ya'll are making this a lot less exciting and fun than i thought it would be
Chill he was just joking about how he misunderstood your sentence
i meant the whole dramatic display by Pati
anyway, i'll get to the reading!
bro chill it's not that deep
You dirty minded Pati!
I cant
is there a place on this server where i can talk with people about learning the german language without it being a direct question about german? I seem to have gone to the wrong channel...
No here is fine aswell
Otherwise you have beginner german
German
And languages
ah yes i probably should get started on trying to actually speak a bit german, it's scary to start to form one's own sentences, since i don't really have anything worthwhile saying in german lol
btw are you swedish? i'm looking at the name
i'd like to talk with swedish speakers a bit about similarities with german, i think that can be very fruitful, instead of having to go through english
You can also start by forming other people's sentences i.e. listening, reading and imitating natives. It's very good for practice
for example i find the word noch to be very similar to än/ännu, though not perfectly overlapping, it seems at least to follow along many of the seemingly weird cases that probably seems much odder to an english speaker
and her and hin seem roughly similar in idea to hit och dit even if not exactly the same either
The best explanation i found for noch is just a general sense of more
yourdailygerman gives the suggestion "now and..."
With hin and her i actually struggle a bit😂
so that it's in a way saying now, but also implying a moreness (and also, sometimes, it's not about time at all)
away from and towards the speaker
Yes that i understand
bist du ferdig?
noch nicht
inte än/ännu
But its some of the composit words
my struggles understanding nochher is part of the reason i wanted to dive deeper
Yes that is correct
Most often composite words are just best accepted as is. Learning them in context and using them in the same situations natives do
that is true
I guess
but with both nach and her and hin are so widely used, especailly the two latter, that it doesn't hurt to learn a bit more, since they're part of maybe hundreds of words? and many different uses
it's also motivational. I like looking at these things
They are best learned by just reading and listening to thousands of examples to actually make your brain understand it
learning german for me isn't just about learning german, but learning about languages as well
Du kommst nicht umhin manche Sachen einfach zu akzeptieren. 😅
Many things have historical reasons that do not apply anymore for example
In many cases if you know the basis it does go alot faster though
Yes of course.
Plus I have tried immersion
A foundation is important for actually understanding stuff you read or listen to
And will it has helped my hearing and reading
I have sadly neglected the technical parts speaking and writing a bit to much
They are best practiced alongside intensive immersion
Shadowing for example
Or speaking to yourself in the mirror
After having watched or listened to the language to get into the language mode
how many languages have you learned with this method, André?
Japanese and some Eastphalian as well as English tbh. I'm not trying to get as many languages under my belt as possible. I have other things to do
Eastphalian?
absolutely based for having learned a language i haven't even heard of 😄
Definaty
Yes a very niche practically extinct language of my ancestors
i assume japanese is connected with the country of japan?
Could be
it's a joke 😛
Just east of it is Eastphalia
😂
oh ok so it's a language from germany?
Yes
A small taste of Eastphalian
i think i need to look at what exactly is the difference between nach and nachher
nach after
nachher afterwards
Basically
i think i need a bit more elaborate analysis 😄
Reading up example sentences would be best
i usually like to learn through examples, yes
Instead of an elaborate dry theoretical analysis I mean
yes, if there aren't examples in what i'm reading i'll be disappointed
Nach especially can have a few slightly different meanings depending on context
kind of weird that it can mean both after and to

continuing the discussion here then 😄 Can nachher be used to describe things that already happened? Like "I went to get some pizza, and after that, i drove home"
Nope, you would use hinterher for that.
Don't ask me why 😅
Could you use danach?
Sure
Yeay
Anybody willing to help proofread my german text for an assignment due tomorrow? Please ❤️
hi
Danke 🙂

@hot cloak hello. To answer your question from the forum, yes, people can make their own posts during the initial testing phrase. We'll see in a couple of months whether we want to keep it like that. But either way, the posts should of course be on topic.
True
Agreed.
Kein Problem, Bre. Ich habe einen Typen dafür
Übrigens, nachdem ich meinen Fehler(zwischen die Wörter) korrigiert hatte, hat es mir auf Deutsch geantwortet. Also wenn man mit Fehlern schreibt, versteht das AI, dass man Deutsch schlecht spricht, und antwortet auf Englisch. Unglaublich

Random: Apparently, when I wake up from anesthesia, I only speak Deutsch until I’m aware of what’s going on. Since I’m in the A2 stage I can’t imagine I make much sense. They know I’m actually awake when I start speaking English again. My wife says she can tell I want coffee, and she says “You don’t get coffee until you speak English” 🤦♂️🤷♂️😂🇩🇪
Lol
Nachts steht Hunger starr in unserm Traum,
Tags die Schüsse knallen her vom Waldessaum.
Was denkst du darüber

hmm ich finds interessant
worum gehts in dem Gedicht? Mein Tipp wäre jetzt gewesen dass es um die ,,weiße Armee" (anhänger der Zarenfamilie) im russischen Bürgerkrieg 1918 nach Lenins Putsch
Hast dus selbst geschrieben?

Das ist ein altes Lied

one question: are NSDAP-era songs considered offensive in modern-day Germany?
sorry if rule 4 violation
@shy bobcat @warped socket Don't discuss this here please.
the amount of ads on duden upsets me greatly
I am currently reading Die Marquise von O... and jesus it is nothing but Schachtelsätze wtf
every sentence is 200 words long
200?
not literally. I was exaggerating
I'm exaggerating lol but almost every sentence looks like this: "*Bald darauf ward der Familie, eben zu einer Zeit, da sich auch der Forstmeister von G..., des Kommandanten Sohn, in dem Hause eingefunden hatte, der sonderbare Schrecken, durch einen Kammerdiener, der ins Zimmer trat, den Grafen F... anmelden zu hören. *"
just tons of clauses
probably 30 to 40. Not every sentence but many of them. I just put an example
Yeah it will definitely improve my reading. And apparently the story i'm reading is a very important and well studied piece of literature. It's not bad, just annoying to read
not even deepl can make complete sense of the sentence I posted btw.
What are you reading?
Heinrich von Kleist, Die Marquise von O.... from 1808
I'm reading it for university
I'm minoring in German. I'd say my reading is probably about C1 but my speaking and listening still kind of suck so I leave my label as B2
yeah cool nitro but dont spam this in every channel
How did u learn?
You're cool.
🥹
hi can you still see a doctor without the krankenversicherungsKARTE?
i have like a soft copy letter though
i wont get the physcial card in time is the problem
I think you need the original
Because of safety reasons and such
I took German throughout middle school and highschool and college but have also done a lot of self study with flash cards
bonk @runic dagger
You have prescribed 311 bonks to @runic dagger.
Hello anyone here learning the german language
I just need someone to talk to
As my partner in speaking
@steel grove were you able to make it?
what do you mean?
You said this stuff. Were you able to make it? Like, can you speak the German language well now, compared before?
Yeah my German is a lot better than before especially since I've been doing flashcards daily and started to read German literature intended for native speakers. I'm definitely not fluent but my German is good
Wow i do hope mine too will improve.
It is way better too if you keep on speaking to germans as well
Auf Wiedersehen
Help me too
I'm so happy
download Anki and a deck of vocabulary cards. Have the card give you the english (or whatever your native language is) meaning first, instead of it giving you the german first.
Learn grammar and stuff, read as much as you can
Ahh okay, tnx
Glückwunsch!
good afternoon
hallo
@hot cloak please have another look at the #rules and avoid all war-related content on the server.
Share Pizza with me pls
I heard Germans and their Scandi neighbors are really into kebab pizza. Do y'all like it?
never tried it but it doesn't sound so different from the really meat-heavy pizzas we often have in the states
don't eat Scandinavians
How do you say in german im taking my dog for a walk. The slang way?
Gassi gehen?
Mit dem Hund einen Gassie gemacht/gegangen?
Ich sage immer, ich mache einen Spaziergang mit meiner Hündin , oder ich habe einen Spaziergang mit meiner Hündin gemacht. But i think it sounds a bit schooly.
VD 🙂
Hallo, ganz gut und dir?
auch danke
hallo
Mm
@native stirrup you can report any issue with #report-issue
since it sounds like a nono
Please don't generalise here. As @ivory girder said, you are very welcome to report things via #report-issue @native stirrup
or bulli can just appear like a fairy
Certainly not to talk about it here though
Literally explaining my lived experience, happens very often
No matter how you’d like to gloss over the issue
Well, if that is what explaining your lived experience involves for you, you may not explain it here anywhere outside of #report-issue as it may make a lot of people feel unwelcome here
I'm not here to discuss it. If you want to report something, you know where to go. Otherwise it's unwanted content
That's it and any further comment will be deleted and may lead to a mute
Well moderator in the chat voice chat server. There were no options to report when clicking on the person I will always screen record everything now.
I don't want to repeat myself, but there is always the option to use #report-issue.
Please don't use #general-2 to either report things from vc or discuss these things
Hallo
Anyone here willing to teach me German. One on kinda thing or point me in the direction for that. I know standard greetings but that's it
you really need a partner? #resources can help and the vcs here are also useful for study partners
Thoughts on Duolingo as a language learning app, and if thoughts are negative, what are other free but good resources?
I personally like Duolingo for Japanese and Spanish learning, but i haven't heard a lot of positive feedback when people talk about learning German on there. I learned German in school so apologies but i can't really give my personal recommendation. You could try to look in #resources and see if anything would work for you
faq duolingo
Duolingo is a decent resource to start with if you're a complete beginner, but it's neither efficient nor comprehensive!
What Duolingo will teach you about grammar is very limited, and none of the systems they use will help you practise much of it.
You can learn some vocabulary with it, but their method (based on the concept of spaced repetition) doesn't work for everybody, and the way Duolingo teaches is not very effective compared to the amount of time it requires from you.
So, if you find it useful, by all means keep using it, but remember not to fall for its gamification of language learning, and move past it when it stops being beneficial. Ignore the streaks.
In any case, keep in mind that Duolingo is not enough to learn a language, ever.

wheres the solution
"Pick up your cross and follow me"
Gotta deal with our shit
Somehow
It's hard tho
That's my big problem right now with weed and videogames
Like I just waste time in my day instead of dealing with things
- realise the cycle 2. stop making an ideal reality 3. grieve your losses 4. pick yourself up and fight to make things better
solution: punk ideology
Oh, @opal sequoia by any chance did you share the Planning & Scheduling Workshop document somewhere. The one with suggestions and such?
Do you mean the one in #985224391849807872 ?
Or was there something else?
No, that one. I am just dumb. Sorry for the ping.
All is in there.
Are there any rules as to which German definite article to use for a fictional/made-up/fake noun?
das
i thin
@jagged oyster do you know
Like?
That idk
But if something like
Rabbit-Cat
Kaninchen-Katze
It would be "die" because of "die Katze" at the end
No, there's no set gender for new words. It could be any.
Unless there's another rule in play (like what @jagged oyster mentioned with the compound noun rules, or a related one being suffix genders) then it will just end up being whatever the consensus is between German-speaking people.
hey there!
So to determine the gender of her word she has to interview 100 Germans?
I don't know who "she" is. If you mean like an author making up a word for their own book, then probably they can choose what they want to use. But people might disagree when they hear it.
And no, you can't just interview 100 random German speakers to find out the gender of a new word.
Often it can vary by region.
The girl who asked the original question..?
Hello!
Hello
generally they'll often take on the gender of a pre-existing word with a similar meaning e.g. Das Handy - Das Smartphone
but there are words where the gender is disputed and depends on anything from region to personal taste. cola and nutella being prime examples
Why what’s up with coke and Nutella
idk their gender but if I had to choose
die Cola , der Nutella
cola on common usage is either neuter or feminine depending on who you ask, and nutella is all three genders
Well you know what they say about gender identity and that
People can choose their own gender
Why don’t we ask cola and nutella ?
der Cola sowie der Nutella
frag Arrem
^ this is trolling btw for the new learners
is ot really trolling if you say it's trolling?
No 😔 I just like the inside joke and don't want learners to get fucked over by it
I'm lame, you see
i've not been 'inside' for a long time lmao
😳

I don't see why this is trolling, it is accurate and based on logic and facts.
Wie bitte????
Die Cola. Die Nutella.

Hello, all. I'm a student taking French, but I'd love to learn German (reading, writing, and speaking) because I'm a dual citizen. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Sure, #getting-started is pretty helpful so you should read it if you haven't yet.

@gleaming sundial Basically the old arabic instruments are used to give the old basic and simple arabic culture look
But its not used in modern music at all
😦
Ye sadly
But there are still some old instruments played in saudi arabia
mainly this one
Hi
Do you guys consider work experience as something useful while acquiring a degree
Planning to work for 1 or 2 years after my bachelors before coming for masters in India
yo i am srry to ask but does anyone have the book horetrainning for b2 completed
It certainly gives an edge, but I would recommend focusing more on entrance exams like JAM and JEST because unless you can make the qualification cut for those, the other stuff won't matter.
Source: a Bachelor's students in India looking for master's options in India and Germany
Guten natch
It's actually gute Nacht because Nacht is a feminine noun.
You say “eines Nachts” though so it’s feminine only until it isn’t

I swear sometimes it’s like the entire language wants to kill you
Oh was
It’s busted
And “Morgen” has multiple genders depending on what you mean
“der Morgen” means “the morning”
“das Morgen” refers to the future
Hallo, ich bin in Berlin. Es ist möglich, eine Kreditkarte für Online-Einkäufe zu haben, aber sie wird mir nicht gegeben, weil ich 18 Jahre alt bin. Kennen Sie einen Kartennamen für einen 18-Jährigen oder wo kann ich ihn finden?
I was half alive at that time
but thanks
ich kann nicht
ich kann auch nicht
xD
i think i asked about this movie before, but has anyone with a higher level of understanding of german than me seen Der Himmel Über Berlin? i'd like to know how good the language in it is as a basis for learning german. Like is it weirdly poetic in some way?
guten abend freunde
also there are parts of the movie where there is a narrator that sounds like he's kind of talking in verse or something. Is he quoting something famous?
@opal sequoia I see. Thanks, so a fictional country and its citizen could use any gender?
Wait, you have session holders here too?
Yes.
Well, when you talk about nationalities, usually you have a feminine and a masculine version. For countries, it depends. Most countries don't use an article and they are neuter.
If you have some specific example in mind, feel free to ask about it in #questions .
And of course for something like countries, you can easily find examples in fantasy books and so on.
Hi
Hello.
Hello

Gluten
Hi
How are you
@long stag I deleted your thread in #942470380692590632 . That forum is for asking questions about the German language, like grammar or vocab. Don't misuse it please.
what are some acryonyms in German? In English there's stuff like lol or tbh, in Italian there's pfv, what are some German ones used in texting?
i had this bookmarked: https://langster.org/en/blog/text-like-a-native-speaker-german-texting-abbreviations
only thing is i never know how current this sort of thing is because the inverse could have "ROFL" listed as an abbreviation
thank you!

Hi
Guys, when I ask for directions in german, people often say runter instead of gerade aus
Is that true?
What does runter mean in this context?
even i dont know
When I ask where a street is, people often say runter
runter in english means down then maybe they really mean gerade aus
Sonic is right here. It's the german version of the english phrase "down the road"
not surprising that it is lol
Hi
Hry
I'm good! How are you?
Im good thanks
