@hot cloak can you clarify what you mean with brief summary lesson? Do you mean which grammar/vocabulary topics to study or something else?
moin
Moinmoin.
Grammatik
You could have taught him German.
German Grammar - Order of Topics A basic list of what order to study grammar topics in, separated by level. This is not the only order you can study in. This is just a simple list people can use if they’re unsure what to study next. I put an asterisk next to topics that aren’t really essential ...
Does this help guide you?
sadly, no
You meant you want all the lessons explained to you?
Pretty sure you can find that in books like German grammar drills.
Have you checked #resources ?
I agree

@ripe flint hello. Why have you posted a random youtube link in #questions-2?
@hot cloak hi, please don‘t use this server for advertising

i am trying to figure out what your emoji is trying to express
is it meant to be confusing?
a kissing mouth with closed eyes and pointing a finger?
Der erhobene Zeigefinger
yeah but the one in the emoji is pointing in the opposite direction
it's not the same thing
Hello @teal vector. Due to a large number of fake nitro scams, the bot isn't very fond of domains that look like discord.com, sorry about that.
oooh! man I was so confused, thanks for clearing it up 😄 I was trying to send an emoji link lol, cue my surprise 😂
Hi, could anyone spare 5 minutes to correct my texts? I need them for a test as soon as possible.

@celest thunder
There are many different definitions to describe a true, perfect Utopia. The reason that there are so many people with so many different ideas about the perfect world is because the act of making something perfect, is a vision of every individual, created to suit what the creator deems to be perfect.
My idea of a perfect place would be perfect only in my mind. Endless and steady income of money and freedom to do whatever we wish. The government that is not generally strict but very law-enforcing. Although the laws wouldn’t be very strict, they would be very serious. For instance, no killing, stealing from others and damaging nature. Ending world hunger and problems that have long plagued in todays society, would be first priority for a solution, a solution for global warming that is adequate for both people and animals. Our families that we never have to fight with and having a lot of siblings and cousins. The children would get top of the line education with the best teachers, teachers that would get paid well to teach our younger generations. The right of choice and free education would be available for everyone. A world where wars don’t exist, where religions are free for all and where everyone is equal. A world where you as an individual can dress, talk, and do activities that are your hearts desires. Equality between men and women, people of different colours and a place where anyone can be what they dreamed to be when they were younger.
Within each and every individual lies a set of beliefs that help set the foundation and fundamentals of his or her existence. These beliefs are uniquely crafted from one's own experience and personal choices, or established through an others' personal influences or belief. That is why in my "world" dreams are not dismayed, they are encouraged.
love it, though encouraged and dismayed are two opposite things
so if you want to show the contrast you can say, encouraged yet dismayed
and another thing is while implanted is not wrong, but it means that someone manually went there and planted the world hunger on purpose
you want to put emphasis on the dreaming part right?
i mean kinda true
let me re read
yes but what you're trying to say is that you want to end the problems that have been existing today for a long time, right?
problems that are deep rooth-ed?? in todays society
like they are how to say unsolvable
right?
rooted would be good yes
personally i would go with 'ending world hunger and problems that have long plagued the world today'
oop that is nicely said aswell
this shows that the problem is ever so old, and it still existing, with difficulties to overcome
it all depends on what you're trying to convey, while all the words you suggested are correct, the message behind them is different
the message i get from that line is this, so thats why im opting for 'long plagued' or 'blighted' depending on how dramatic you want to be
you are very dramatic with that long plagued
precisely
yeah i understand
same for this 'That is why in my “world” dreams are encouraged and not dismayed.'
i mean i must add something that will add emotional connection between me and reader
do you want to show that the dreams should be encouraged more than dismayed or that dreams shouldnt be feared
like what would middle aged woman think of me writing that
more enouraged
wait
should i say
personally i love it all, i really enjoyed the read
no dismayed means feared XD
buahahahah
a good thing about showing contrast is 2:1 on what you want to emphasize
so if you want to show that they should be encouraged more than 'not feared'
i would add' dreams are encouraged even celebrated(rejoiced also works) and not dismayed)
yes that works too
shut up
what
you're doing great, do not call yourself shit
i am little shit tho
anyways
thank you so much on opinion
it matters a lot, coming from you aswell yk
since you are gawkie

no worries mate, feel free to ask if you need more feedback ^^
but yea do not put yourself down, you're doing great
tis only 23:49 for a degen like me, thats the start of the day
ehh i wanna sleep in tmr morning
what i meant is that if you are writing them now and need feedback i will be here for a while xD
do you have to read it or you just write it and they correct it on paper
Oh i got writing exam today at 1

URBAN LEGEND
We have all heard of strange and gory stories that are supposedly true, experienced by a friend of a friend. Whether true or not these so called “urban legends” that tend to circulate throughout society, thriving on each individual’s fears and curiosity. Within these tales lies the attitude and value of humans.
One of the most common stories in today’s world certainly is the story about prince Vlad, or simply Vlad Dracula. Author Bram Stoker was the first person to get the idea of the character Dracula, he was named after the Romanian prince Vlad Dracul III who earned his place in history by impaling his enemies alive. Vlad Dracul, also known as Vlad the Impaler (Tepes), defended his beloved homeland with savage acts of barbarism. During his bloody reign, he delighted in torturing and murdering anyone who dared to trespass upon his domain. Vlad impaled his victims, skewering them on tall wooden stakes and leaving them on display along the borders of his territory as a warning to enemy armies. It is believed that Vlad executed somewhere between 40.000 and 100.000 people in this cruel and horrific fashion. Vlad was after impaling them going to feast among the fields of dying bodies as they writhe in agony. It was also said that he drank the blood of his victims. That is where the idea of vampires, blood-drinking, and wooden stakes, known to be connected to vampires came from.
Some consider Vlad a sadistic bloodthirsty ghoul, but others insist that his ruthless measures were a necessity to restore order to his beloved homeland and keep invaders at bay. Society dearly values life, whether due to religious or cultural influences, life is sacred and precious. That is why when hearing life-threatening stories, our heart races. An enormous amount of legends are possible. In conclusion, tales have some truth in them, and that is why tales are sometimes quite believable, distinct, and real. We can even say that urban legends are here to save historical events
Speaking of vampires, in honor of the 1922 film Nosferatu's 100 year anniversary, the German Redcross is doing a promotional blood drive
amazing, 10/10

This is very well written, greatjob!

im only around B1 but does anyone else find/found it hard to comprehend people actually speak german natively
like im not a native english speaker and can comprehend english as a native language but german seems "too complicated to actually be a native language" lol
Thank youu

That's the case with every language. Your brain region for English is like Tokyo where big highways and high speed trains travel information and words in no time. The brain region you have for German as a beginner - or any language for that matter - is more like a tiny village in a rain forest, where you can only go by foot.
Your brain slowly adapts to a language and gets faster over time. Thus it feels much harder. Your brain thinks too slow yet in German.
i get it but it feels like all the little things are too complicated
don't remember feeling that way with english but i was kid when i learned it so idk
When you learned English as a kid, you had no comparison. Everything feels complicated when you are young.
But it was the same way.
you had no comparision
i had my native language?
Yes, but you were still a kid, you said.
i mean i get all of that but it was sort of a vent
You probably got a lot of exposure of English back then
I kind of relate, French was my second and it still is worse than my English even when I learned it way younger and was pushed into it more by parents.
With English we just get a lot of exposure by being on the internet or whatever without realizing how many things nowadays everywhere are in English
Agree.
Not even just on the internet.
Commercials, bilingual signs, etc
Any language that isn't English is something we actively need to go out of our way to get exposure to. Thus it feels much more draining, than English, where the exposure is just kind of everwhere
is english actually simpler than other languages or is does it just look that way b/c its the global lingua franca
The difficulty of a language mostly depends on how far your own native language is
If a Chinese would learn English he would have as much of a hard time, as a Brit learning Chinese
As romance languages are structurally similar in many cases and share a lot of vocabulary, even Spanish, French and Italian Speakers will have it easier learning English than the African Xhosa language for example.
am talking about the non-mostly part
The " the non-mostly part"?
mostly depends
I think other factors exist, but really aren't worth taking into account. Sure English lost its cases, but on the other hand, the word order got much fixer, that German for example. "The big red dog" for example works, but "The red big dog" doesn't. So producing natural patterns is still subject to many rules, even grammar books don't talk about.
I don't think It can be easily decided if it is easier if we leave out the distance to any other language
Because children generally for any language take the same amount of time to learn them.
all languages are equal - fair enough (except esperanto?)
I heard danish children often take some more time
danish is the most difficult language then
Not necessarily. Picking up the different sounds for the children might take longer. So the pronunciation might be harder to grasp.
But for Germanic language speakers it will be easy non-theless
yeah was joking
Yeah, but it actually is an interesting question
Are all languages really alike
in terms of difficulty
I mean languages are a pack of phrases we say for certain situations and in every language there is a handful of things to say for each situations.
In one language you can differentiate nuances in one aspect and for another in a different one
espernato?
I think conlangs will change over time in a more natural direction if they are used often enough
If there are not many synonyms, people will create them.
Any language that is used for business needs business phrases and such.
A language like English that is used pretty much in every situation people do, thus has such a big palette of different vocabulary for example
While local minority languages might only have vocabulary for farming, food, family etc
in my opinion one of the more beautiful parts of conlangs are the vast differences, in how extreme one can go, just look at toki pona and then ithkuil
Surely nice to play with

Hello People, I'd like to ask you to share with me your notes on vocab. Anki and flash cards don't really work for me, does someone have another suggestion?
thanks 🙂
A1 is Very easy
How do you use Anki? Like what are the settings, do you use the default presets?
I'm only asking because I believe Anki is the best way to learn vocab, I'd like to hear your opinion of course

Oi andreia, sou meio suspeita para dar dicas ja que estudo em uma escola alemã mas eu costumo assistir aulas online e fazer anotações, assistir séries e ouvir rádio também ajudam! (Desculpe o português brasileiro)
I've spent the past 5 years bouncing in and out of my German studying, but always felt overwhelmed and ending up burning out. I think the different cases contributed mostly to this
any advice for getting back on the saddle? any wise motivation to share?
native english speaker
I got one, but I don't know how I should explain it
Learn the endings of german verbs and nouns and just put them on the english version (take the ending off, ofc)
try to understand that and ask questions
we will get there
Sem problema eheh 🙂 pois eu faco o mesmo, mas nao sinto q seja eficiente sabes? :/
Yes, I'd say that it's mainly the method, it does not work for me. I'f say I'm much more of a note taking girl x.x
But with all the suggestions: leaning the meaning, learning the word in a sentence, check synonyms, etc. I have not found the "right" way to do it 😅
@wooden crystal i recommend using the words you learn in sentences, write them and read them aloud
Yeah, what Gawkie said is actually very important. Memorising words without any context is almost useless. There are some pre-made decks like the Goethe ones that are helpful when you're starting out, especially if you don't think you're confident enough to make your own decks. The thing about Anki's default settings is that they don't yield the best results since they only take care of the basics, I'd recommend checking this website out: https://refold.la/roadmap/stage-1/a/anki-setup
@wooden crystal see above ^
Here's how the settings should be if you're using the latest version of Anki
Why should we trust this source? 😄 I've been using ANKI for a bit, but never thought to change the default settings because someone once told me they were pretty good as is.
Have they ever tried changing the settings?
Do you also click the "hard" and "easy" buttons?
Regarding your question, you're absolutely right, you don't have to trust this website. That's why I said "I'd recommend" :v
I do
I actually just wanted to know if they were somehow credible or something - that’s all
Like, maybe I’m using ANKI wrong 😂
There's actually no wrong way of using Anki since our brains work differently, like I might need more review sessions than you, so you should change the settings accordingly :D I think you'll get the hang of it once you start reading the documentation or watch some videos on YouTube.
Speaking from experience, I usually avoid pressing the "Hard" and "Easy" buttons because doing so will change the algorithm and send cards maybe too far off in the future and your retention rate will obviously drop as a result, if you press "Easy" that is. Press "Hard" and you'll keep seeing the cards too often XD I only use "Easy" sparingly and for words like "Reis" or "Vier"
i will never stop confusing angewiesen and anwesend with each other
Is Tamino your real name or just a nickname?
My real name, why ?
Have you ever met someone that also has that name?
nope, I mean depends, the mother who was in the hospital with my mother stole the name and gave the same name to her son
Damn
Because it's my official second name 😅
I mean it is a pretty neat name
Did your mother hear it from someone in a hospital?
I don't know 😂
The situation of me having two names is a result from my father and mother unable to agree on a single name 😂
thats actually cool
Oh wait, you got a double name?
Yes "André Tamino"
That's why I have a second name too 💀
That actually sounds pretty good, ngl
Vorallem im deutschen
What did you teacher called you by ?
Most people only know my first name, as I rarely use my second
Same for me
Its usually a fun fact I throw in there when talking to people
Someone: "My dog died"
You: "Anyways, did you know I have a second name"
My first name is Tamino but my second name is the name of my father because you do that in Iraq.
I usually only keep my last name a secret online as its very rare and can be used to uniquely identify me and my family
Yeah, Tamino is above the 500 rarest names in Germany 💃
This is probably the first time I've heard it, that's for sure
My family name is a bit rare too 💀
If you google me by my first names you won't find out anything
Time to get both of you to doxx yourselves
But just google my family name and 50% of google images results are people I personally know including close family members
||For legal reasons that is a joke||
better be
that's crazy
Fun fact: we also have a coat of arms in the family, that can be seen on stone inscriptions from the 17th. century
In my own home town
Our family also still owns the house it has been living in for the last 400 years
bro would be on a rating of rarity higher than a 0.1 platinum trophy
That’s amazing wtf
And I will inherit that sooner or later
My whole identity is very much bound to our family
One of the sad parts about America is that we can’t really see a lot of our ancient history because of what we did to Native Americans
I mean there’s also the fact that there wasn’t stonework and such
But still
Well, the timeframes are very different too
An old building in america is around 60-70 years old
An old house in europe is around 200 years old
Just different perspectives
It is pretty fascinating though
Our house has been restorated and renovated multiple times, but the base building is like very old
Have you said your family name? How can we search for.it 😂😂 ?
i am forever cursed to confuse aufregen with anregen and vice versa
and auflösen and auslösen
@naive charm wie gehts
Auslösen ist einen process zu beginnen, kannst das S als eselsbrücke verwende.

you can open a ticket to talk and discuss something with the mods
You can use #report-issue if you haven't gotten in contact with one yet.
the struggle is real with remembering words
The stories are sometimes pretty entertaining!
Late reply, but I disagree
I mean misunderstanding pf and f, alright. I know weirdos like @arctic atlas who pronounce these the same
Fahrer also has a long a, however, and Pfarrer doesn't. I mean for learners, sure, they can be confused, but I don't think it's very common for natives to confuse one with the other
what

Yeah sure, if it's non pronounced correctly, then yeah
Don't you say the same when you see an f at the beginning of words as when it's pf?
Like Pferd and fährt
Oh yeah when I'm lazy
Ah, I see

In English and German, a verb can have one of two voices which describe the relationship between the verb and the subject. These voices are the active voice and passive voice.
Typically, we use the active voice, where the subject is the doer or agent of the action. For example:
The man eats the apple.
In this sentence, the agent (the man) is acting upon (by eating) the object (the apple).
In the passive voice, the subject is the receiver or patient of the action. This typically places the emphasis on the patient or action, and the agent can be left out altogether if it is unknown or irrelevant. For example, the above sentence converted into the passive voice becomes:
The apple is being eaten.
In this example, the patient (the apple) is being acted upon (by being eaten) by an unknown agent.
German offers two passive forms: the Vorgangspassiv and the Zustandspassiv. The Vorgangspassiv refers to the process of an action, while the Zustandspassiv refers to the state of an action. The Vorgangspassiv is more often used and relates closely to the active voice. See >explain Vorgangspassiv for an explanation of the Vorgangspassiv, and see >explain Stative Passive for an explanation of Zustandspassiv.

explain Word Order for Verbs
Word Order - Verbs
The placement of the finite verb (or conjugated verb) is very important to the structure of a German sentence. While most other elements in a sentence can be moved, the position of the finite verb is fixed.
🔸 Main clause
A main clause is an independent clause that makes sense by itself. Here the finite verb is always the second element.
Der Mann gibt der Frau das Buch.
An auxiliary/modal verb (e.g. müssen) replaces the original verb (called the main verb) as the finite verb and results in the main verb being placed at the end of the clause. Additionally, the main verb is returned to its infinitive or past participle form, depending on the tense.
Der Mann muss der Frau das Buch geben.
🔸 Questions & Statements
The finite verb is always the first element.
Siehst du den Ausgang?
Interrogative words (or w-words) are considered to be in the zeroth position.
Worauf wartet ihr?
Auxiliary/modal verbs have the same effect as before:
Kannst du den Ausgang sehen?
Worauf habt ihr gewartet?
🔸 Subordinate clause
A subordinate clause depends on a main clause to make sense. It is often introduced by a conjunction as the first element and the finite verb is usually the last element.
Ich bin nicht zur Arbeit gefahren, weil ich krank war.
Du könntest ihm helfen, statt dich nur zu beschweren!
When a single auxiliary modal verb is introduced, it becomes the finite verb and the main verb is placed before it::
Er ist sich immer noch nicht sicher, ob er ihr alles erzählen soll.
If a double infintive is present, it is placed at the end and the finite verb comes before it.
Das ist das Haus, das ich hätte verkaufen sollen.

Nice name
Hey guys does anyone have experience about studying in germany i have a lot of question and i will be super grateful if anybody can help me
@arctic atlashattest du auch mal Corona?
I did the math, if I waste 1000 dollars a day for the next 100 years (basically live like a king) it would cost me 36 million dollars. So basically I only need 36 million dollars in order to live like a king forever
So I need to figure out how I make 36 million dollars. I only have 50$ currently
@stone sorrel hello, please avoid comments like the one you made a bit ago. Discrimination of any kind, even if it's meant as a "joke", is not tolerated on the server.
