Hi, I just saw the message from a person asking about the cases, but I can't find where it was. Hence, I am just leaving it here - this document is an attempt to explain the cases in simple English.
Hope it helps!

Hello Guys.. Does anyone have the book "Deutsch intinsiv schreiben b1" pdf?
Sorry but we can't allow piracy on the server as it's against Discord TOS.
Hi guys! Can someone recommend me a comprehensive list of verbs with prepositions along with their meanings/usage?
I would find this really useful too
I found one in the resource list under intermediate grammar
@pure wolf @iron raven There should be lists like that in the Vocabulary section of the resource list.
Yup! Found the verb-proposition colocations in the advanced section of the vocab :) thanks!
curious how you would interpret the leaning of the politics channels that you've recommended
Tamara Wernli might be leaning a bit to the right-wing
SinansWoche tries to be rational overall, thought probably more left leaning.
Doktorant is also probably more left leaning though I'm not 100% sure on how much
Most of them however are not that political, but rather just providing social commentary in general and all of them aren't very political, as they usually offer solid reasons behind certain stances they have, which is the main reasons they are included.
I wouldn't include any political channels, that I think you couldn't have a healthy disagreement with

holy shit, this is amazing
Made a .pdf out of those, if you want to upload it somewhere and submit it as a resource again.
Two questions regarding the app LingQ:
1.) How is it recommended to treat verbs with separable prefixes on it? The way the app normally handles words in texts seems counterintuitive.
2.) Is there a way to edit the wording of an entry in your vocabulary? Or is that impossible and you simply have to add an entirely new entry?
LingQ has a forum. Check there. I just looked it up and people answered that already.

For everyone that has noticed that Quizlet has become a paid app I highly recommend Knowt. It's free and very user-friendly + it has notes from students on it
Dankbar
Any reason to use this over Anki?
Imo: Anki is not user friendly due to it’s out-dated interface and bad orientation. Also the fact that you have to download a whole app is a hassle for me on my laptop.
Knowt has a modern look and is easy to orientate in. You can import decks from quizlet and Knowt makes flashbacks from notes you and other users can upload to the site which brings me to the following point: it is made for students. Knowt has a big user contributions as they can share their notes from various universitair subjects. Both apps use spaced repetition and you can search textbooks by ISBN code and find corresponding card decks

faq gender
German nouns are sorted in three different genders: masculine, neuter and feminine. These have nothing to do with sex or social gender.
The first thing genders will influence are articles like der, das, die. Each word has its own and you better get it right: some words that look identical can have different meanings depending on the gender they're used with. For example:
die Band = the (musical) band,
der Band = the (book) volume,
das Band = the tape.
Some words, mainly trademarks and loanwords, have multiple acceptable genders while having no change in meaning:
der Jogurt = das Jogurt
das Virus = der Virus
These may vary by region or colloquiality.
💢 But WHY, German, WHY ⁉
Gender is actually quite useful! Since sentence structure is less rigid than in English, grammatical case helps you tell the various elements apart (with some practice), and that works through genders: each gender has its own forms, which makes everything a little less ambiguous. Besides, as you've seen with Band above, it allows us to make up words with different meanings that look the same but are not ambiguous, and if that's not magic, I don't know what is. ✨
🙀 But how am I supposed to tell them apart? 🙀
Check out >explain gender patterns. 😉

Hi, I'm looking for a book to improve my Vocabulary. Does anyone have any good suggestions?
I've been thinking of just crunching the English-German Dictionary, is that an efficient way to improve vocab.?
You should try short stories/short articles. Learning in context is better than random words in the dictionnary.
Gotcha, do you have any recommendations where I can find cool, comprehensive German short stories/articles? Would comics suffice? Given a visual explanation I feel like it would be even more effective
Comics/Mangas are really good to start since you also have images to help you with the context. (Webtoon.com) Then you can search for "Kurzgeschichten für Kinder" or just "Kurzgeschichten" on google go get longer sentences. As soon as you feel confortable you can try reading longer and longer texts.
@true flint I'll just add a small disclaimer to that: sometimes content like that can have bad grammar depending on the language skills of the person writing it and whether it's something formally published, so just keep that in mind if you're choosing something for the purpose of learning.

Hello, has anyone tried studying on Lingoda? Recommended or not as a learning tool?

Look at step 1. Download and install AutoHotkey.
ah ok thank you
ill respond if it doesnt work
is there anyway i could relace parts of my keyboard with the german umulats and only that part of the keyboard?
What do you mean?
If you want to create your own keyboard layouts for Windows you can use this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=102134
But I think using AutoHotkey is much easier and faster.
Sorry I took a wile
This is what I mean
Place only these four keys with the German umulats
Yes, you can make a new keyboard layout. If your keyboard comes with its own software, you might be able to do it with that. Otherwise, you can use the tool I linked above.
ok thanks
i tried my own keyboard softwear but it doesnt let you use two different language charecters at one
tiem
Potentially you could also remove the default from those keys, just leave them blank, and then use autohotkey to set up hotkeys for them. I've never tried that though.
You can also use the premade autohotkey file for that, just change the key combinations for each letter.
i cant find the extract location for microsoft keyboard layoutcreator
wheres the default
Not sure but I'm sure there's plenty of info in the documentation / Google.

Are they not here?
how do i apply the code
I have no idea. Read the website. But that guide itself actually recommends to use AutoHotkey so maybe just try reading the AutoHotkey documentation instead.
But I'll guarantee that you will not be able to achieve what you want to achieve if you can't be bothered to read any documentation yourself.
but can autohotkey let me switch what letter goes where with 2 languages at once 🫃
I don't know what you mean about 2 languages at once.
my keyboard stays the same
but 4 keys use the special german charecters
Yes, that's what the AutoHotkey script I made does. It just uses Alt + A and so on instead of PgUp, etc..
So just open the script and change the key combinations.
You can open and edit it with Notepad.
ok
For anything else, you'll have to read AutoHotkey documentation.
sorry final question, what would the aberration for insert home pgup and delete be
nevermind

@silk summit I was looking for this! Do you have more recommendations for german cartoon?
Does anyone have article that explain the plural nouns really well? I'm stuck 😅
Sure! Just one minute!
Okay, a bit ago I asked some other people and a few native Germans gave fantastic reccomendations. I haven't looked into this a lot, but one suggested KIKA, which is a German broadcasting channel for kids! They apparently should have a lot of good and non stupid cartoons for various ages. Have a look at kika.de if it's not region blocked! It wasn't for me, but again I haven't looked too much into it. Still give it a shot, I'm sure you'll find some great stuff!

Oh! Apparrently u already subscribe to it and i do agree it's a great one. I enjoy their shows especially feuerwehnman sam a lot! Is there more?
Good! I don't know of many more... the others I was reccomended were Peter Und Findus (have not looked into this one) and Sessamestraße (though I did look into this one, and it was incredibly hard to follow for me. At least the ones I watched. A lot of overlapping chatter and a little overwhelming, my guess is it's not great for beginners. But I can be wrong! You're free to look into any of these, but I don't have any more. Gl!)

faq N-Deklination
Weak nouns are called this way because they receive the same endings as adjectives inflected with weak endings. They take an additional ending -n in every case except nominative singular. This is also known as N-Declension and affects almost exclusively masculine nouns.
Nominativ: der Junge, die Junge__n__
Genitiv: des Junge__n__, der Junge__n__
Dativ: dem Junge__n__, den Junge__n__
Akkusativ: den Junge__n__, die Junge__n__
Some nouns end with a suffix -en to make the pronunciation easier:
der Mensch, den Mensch__en__
‼ Das Herz is the only non-masculine (neuter) noun with N-Declension❣
So how do we recognize these nouns? We can divide them into 3 big groups:
- nouns of Greek and Latin origin,
- nouns ending with
-e(most of these refer to people or animals), - other random German nouns (Mensch, Herr, Student, Nachbar, Prinz etc.)
Another way to divide the groups could be:
- nouns denoting male beings in general (der Bauer, der Knabe, der Herr, der Junge, der Kunde etc.)
- nouns indicating nationality or religious affiliation (der Chinese, der Russe, der Türke, der Jude, der Katholik, der Protestant)
- nouns designating male beings and ending in the foreign suffixes (
-ant,-arch,-ast,-ege,-ent,-ist,-oge,-om,-oph,-ot: der Kollege, der Student, der Psychologe, der Polizist, der Philosoph)
‼ der Käse and words ending with -ee aren’t weak nouns.
Genitive of Weak Nouns
You might have noticed from the examples above that weak nouns don’t have the additional -s in genitive like other masculine nouns.
Some exceptions are das Herz and nouns of group 3 that don’t refer to people nor animals (Name, Wille, Glaube, Buchstabe etc.), which take both the -n and -s endings.
Example: der Name, des Name__ns__.

Can anyone recommend a (frequency) vocabulary list but for Switzerland specifically? Not the dialect, just the words that are more commonly used there than in other German speaking countries.
More context: I found myself learning different vocabulary lists just to realize some words are never used there, e.g. given a verb with 2 synonyms, only 1 version is actually commonly used. My mind cannot handle a full vocabulary + 2 synonyms for each word 🙈
Hi
Do you have any guide for testdaf exam plz?
are there any sites/apps that have english words in german flashcards?
ex beginner
Please make sure to read Part 1 before starting Part 2!
1: Conjunctions (coordinating and subordinating)
2: Subordinate clause word order
3: Dative case
4: Dative verbs
5: Verbs with two objects (e.g. geben)
6: Prepositions (accusative, dative, and two-way)
7: Spoken past tense (Perfekt)
8: Written past tense (Präteritum)
9: Genitive case
10: Relative clauses
11: Adjective declension
- Make sure to practice writing and reading simple texts
- Some of these concepts are confusing to start with, so it’s a good idea to ask for help in #questions when you’re unsure
- You should use a declension chart to help with declension to start with, because you won’t be able to memorize it straight away
- After you feel confident with creating sentences, you can start learning the adjective declension properly by using the command >faq adjective declension and reading the guide provided
does anyone have any books in german to read for like level one or 2 speakers

The simplest way to learn German is to find topics you don’t understand yet and search for explanations of them. This list provides you with a guide for which topics to learn if you are completely new to German. Type the topic into Google (or YouTube) and start learning!
1: Alphabet (especially ä, ü, ö and ß)
2: Basic greetings (hello, goodbye, etc.)
1: Noun gender & plurals
2: Nominative case (What are cases?)
3: Nominative pronouns (I, you, he, she, etc.)
4: Verbs in present tense
5: Definite/indefinite articles
6: Accusative case (for nouns)
7: Accusative pronouns
8: Word order of simple sentences
9: How to ask questions
See Part 2 on the next page.
- Always learn the gender of a noun when you learn a new noun
- Learn to use a translation dictionary (e.g. dict.cc, leo.org)
- Use
>faq resourcesto see our list of German learning resources - For listening and pronunciation practice, try watching movies or videos (incl. YouTube)
- You can listen to pronunciation for words on websites like dict.cc, forvo.com, and others
- Practice writing sentences every day (and asking people to correct them)
- Ask as many questions as possible
- Don’t be scared to make mistakes!!!! If you don’t let yourself make mistakes, you will never be able to learn German

Hi, I have two questions:
Does anybody know a good resource (whether it's book or online dictionary) where there is a list of useful noun-adjective-verb etc vocabulary? I mean for example erfahren-Erfahrung cause I have grammar book which contains possible endings for generating nouns, adjectives etc and very few examples but it's kinda really hard to do that by yourself. I know book can't handle all of them but I wonder if there are some books which countain tables/lists for most common words. (There are lots of English textbooks which do same but I found it little weird I haven't seen that in any of German books, haha). Or maybe if there's online dictionary which shows nouns, adjectives etc generated from verbs or vice versa. B1 level or maybe a little higher.
And does anyone have book Sicher B1-C1? I have it but it has no answer key? Is answer key not available at all?

ChatGPT is incredibly useful for language learning and can do almost anything a private tutor can
Well, if the screenshot is anything to go by, that's not really true, given that the response is inaccurate.
ChatGPT is very good at writing texts that sound convincing, but that does not mean the information provided is relevant or accurate.
The difference between Nähe and nah is that Nähe is a noun and nah is an adjective. Note how Nähe needs to be capitalised, because it's a noun, but that ChatGPT did not mention that and even used it incorrectly itself.
Ah, I see. The model is not perfect, and when tested, did make some mistakes, but it can still be very useful in certain situations.
How so?
I mean, a learner is not going to know when the model is giving them false information, so isn't it more problematic than helpful?
Well, for other things like correcting grammar, it's spot on. I've tried it on English and have had no objections.
Thank you.
Kind of you, it'd be helpful.

No, it's rare that one resource will cover everything from A1-C1. In fact I can't think of any that do that, because the style of learning changes so much between levels. If you need something to follow for Level B, a textbook might be a better option.
But if you're currently a beginner, Nicos Weg is a recommended option.

Oh, I don't know if they're meant to be exercises. But you should be able to find all the translations with a dictionary.
I don't use those books so this is just a guess, but I think the reason they have a blank space is so that you can put any language translation in there. Like if someone doesn't speak English natively, they can put something else.

Hello everyone, I hope you are well. Personally, I have tried to learn with "DuoLingo", but I don't find the application impractical, in fact, I feel that it hinders my learning. I have tried another application called "LingQ", maybe the interface is more complicated and sometimes feels awkward, but I have learned more in this one than in the other one. I'm telling you in case the same thing has happened to you.
@rotund ridge, your message has been redirected here from #community-discussion:
I found that to really learn a language, its best to go beyond simply using apps. I do use duolingo, mondly and quizlet learn. To this, I add youtv.de (for German) to help me get used to hearing the language. I watch Marsha and the Bear in German. Plus, writing in German helps. Lastly, I will learn Dutch, using German. I found that using Mondly helpful for just learning basics. I use Mondly in one browser German to Hebrew, and in another browser I do Dutch to Japanese. Its loads of fun! I take notes and then will toss those notes up on Quizlet and use learn mode. After that, I'll have 2 characters talk to each other in which ever language I want to target.
@rotund ridge, your message has been redirected here from #community-discussion:
LingQ didn't work as well for me because it kept insisting that I be able to process what I hear like other people do. I'm glad it works for you though! Mondly also requires hearing, but I can usually flunk those questions and be okay, or guess the answer and be okay. lol
I found that using Quizlet to learn vocabulary, using their Learn Mode (cost involved) most helpful. You'll have to find the study sets that are by topic. There used to be a vocabulary list book in German. >resource link "Mastering German Vocabulary: A thematic approach" by Forst, Schnorr... Its a Barrons book. You could nab that book and then make flashcard sets on Quizlet, and then use learn mode to learn them. Very useful to type or write the words in order to learn them. I say the letters outloud while I type. (If I did not do this right, please fix if you can. Sorry!!!)

When creating flashcards it is not enough to just have a single german word on one side, and a single word translation on the other side of the card. You want to provide details that match your learning style and help you better understand what the word means.
At the very least, include the gender and the plural form. E.g. Der Mann | Die Männer or Der Mann -:er Whichever form helps you recognise the plural ending and any vowel changes. You may also want to add a note for weak masculine nouns. (See >explain N-Declension.)
Include the infinitive, the preterite (simple past) and the past participle (perfect form). E.g. rennen | rannte | gerannt or for a separable verb anrufen | rief an | angerufen. For irregular verbs, you may want to list all present tense conjugations. You may also want to include if the verb uses haben or sein as its auxiliary.
Adding an example sentence is important for helping you understand the usage and context of a word (dwds.de and linguee.com are good sources of example sentences). You may also want to add multiple translations for words that have multiple meanings. E.g. Die Auflage can mean both a requirement, and the edition of a book. You may also want to try picture cues or audio recordings (possible sources for voice recordings include dict.cc, linguee.com, duden.de, and wiktionary.de).
Flashcards based on close passages can be a very effective way to learn new vocabulary. E.g. put Ich kaufe Lebensmittel im [blank] ein. on one side of the flashcard, and Ich kaufe Lebensmittel im *Markt* ein; der Markt, die Märkte - market. This places vocabulary in context to help you understand its meaning and usages, and also provides you with whole phrases that help jolt your memory when trying to remember an individual word.
Flashcards are most effective when they train your ability to reproduce knowledge. I.e. Seeing the word Baum and recognising it as tree is a lot less effective than being able to look at a picture of a tree and know it means der Baum. Taking that a step further you want to be able to also know that that while die Struktur also means 'tree', it doesn't actually mean the plant. When creating flashcards, try to design them with these concepts in mind. E.g. Using minimal or no flashcards that show you a german word and ask you to recall what it means in english, and instead focus on the other way around: giving you an english word and asking you to recall what it means in german.

Ohh sorry!!
is there a textbook or single resources that goes through all german grammar that exists from A1 - C2?
like i dont want any "filler" acitivities. Just pure information of all grammar points from A1 - C2
You mean like a grammar reference book? Sure, there are several, but the most popular is Hammer's. People also use Duden for that.
You can't use it like a textbook though. It's more like a dictionary of grammar. When you're stuck on a niche grammar topic, you can use a grammar reference book to look up the exact details.
For redemittels are there any resources to prepare for exams bcz redemittels in textbooks are common and exams people get marked down for using the same redemittels. Does anyone know how to make redemittels or have any resources for really good redemittels

I'm only afraid it might be feeding me sometimes wrong information, but it certainly doesn't look like it
Careful with that tool. There are some videos on youtube testing it with German learning if you're interested.
I personally use dictionary e-books. There are total of 5 Dictionaries from Level A1 to Level C1. I think they are most comprehensive ones. These include Verbs, Nouns, Pronouns, etc. Link: https://store.pothi.com/book/ebook-bhager-publisher-most-detailed-german-english-dictionary-level-a1/
may be you include this in the resources list if you deem to believe so
So far I've pretty much only seen it provide wrong information for German learning. So I would also advise to be cautious with it.
Hello everyone, I've struggled with writing and speaking skills, and as a solution, I created a set of exercises to help myself improve. The idea of the exercises is to translate a text according to your proficiency level, and receive feedback and suggestions for corrections. I couldn't find any existing resource that allowed for open answers, so I decided to create my own. It's completely free and doesn't require any registration.

Deutsch Kompakt (Renate Luscher)

explain N-Declension
Example: der Name, des Name__ns__.
has anyone had success using chatbots to practice german? i found i can make small talk with chat gpt in german and it seems to work fine. wondering if there are any further refined natural language tools designed for language learning?
i found i can also practice speaking and listening using the iphone dictation and speaking features (download the "enhanced" Anna voice for speaking), and using the DeepL app to check the sentences that I speak
You just have to be aware that it can contain mistakes. As a beginner, it may be hard for you to know if something is correct or not. So just never assume anything from ChatGPT is correct.
Certainly don't ask it to explain anything like grammar or vocab meanings though.
Hallo Deutsch 1
This is a good book but their are some extra topics not related to A1, you can skip them and start with others
Does anyone know of an extension that makes a popup dictionary when I hover over a word/text? and also shows gender/plural?
Note:im using firefox
yes, that is wise. another tool is the DeepL app: i find its comfortable to form a sentence in my mind, dictate it using the iOS dictation, and then read DeepL's translation to check my work. but, i am not sure if DeepL would tell me if the grammer is wrong, or if it would just intelligently infer what i'm trying to say and show me a corrected translation.
DeepL will not tell you if what you write is incorrect. If you write something wrong, it will simply try to guess the closest possible translation to what it thinks you wanted to write.
know of any that will?
Sapling seems like a good one. i'll experiment with it for a while.
Any website that ranks words by how often they're used/how colloquial they are? To know if a word is widely used or one that even many native spekaers dont know
May be Leo.org
Duden does by "Häufigkeit"
language tool is decent but not enough
also u need more than grammar
.
can I combine multiple ressources at once? for example use a German textbook and an audio course at the same time?
Yes and that's actually recommended. Using just one resource is too limiting. It's good to use several and also experiment to see what ones you prefer.
I started with Duolingo and it's good for learning some new words but I find it lacks in grammar and pronoucniation
Chat gpt seems quite useful if you ask it to correct your sentences or to explain a grammar rule
It will often make stuff up that's completely wrong. That's why you shouldn't use it for that.

This is a really a good blog that writes articles about differences between similar words and confusing grammatical topics, this article about "es" is pretty good and I've read other articles as well. definitely recommended since even the writing style is funny and keeps you engaged.
The amount of spelling and grammar mistakes in this blog post is ironic.
he is not an English native speaker, it happens. that doesn't mean that what he writes isn't beneficial. he even wrote in his about page:
All the explanations here in English because I want the page to be useful for as many people as possible.
I’ll do my very bestest to write understandable and correct but I am not a native speaker so there will certainly be a decent amount of weird phrasings or grammar glitches.
Also, I have to admit that I am awfully lazy when it comes to proofreading… who likes to read their own stuff anyways 🙂
So there will also be a few typos and editing mistakes in the posts.
But everything is hand crafted, no ChatGPT or whatever.
oh its still very beneficial. I was just noting the irony.

Can someone recommend me something to improve my vocabulary for A1-A2 level?
In the resource list there are some vocab lists for different CEFR levels. That's one option.
You can also do some reading. One option is simple news such as: https://www.nachrichtenleicht.de/
A really nice reading source for learners is a magazine called Deutsch Perfekt. https://www.deutsch-perfekt.com/
Deutsch perfekt hilft Ihnen, Deutsch zu lernen oder Ihr Deutsch zu verbessern. Hier finden Sie deutsche Texte, Audiofiles und Übungen!
There's a few free articles on the website, but mostly you have to pay for the magazine. However, there is a way to read it for free, which is to use Onleihe, a free online library: https://www.goethe.de/ins/fi/en/kul/bib/onl.html
With Onleihe you can borrow tons of German material for free.

Hi everyone! I'm looking for a A1 level grammar book. Any recommendations?
can i learn german on DuOlinGo
faq duo
Duolingo is a decent resource to start with if you're a complete beginner, but it's neither efficient nor comprehensive!
What Duolingo will teach you about grammar is very limited, and none of the systems they use will help you practise much of it.
You can learn some vocabulary with it, but their method (based on the concept of spaced repetition) doesn't work for everybody, and the way Duolingo teaches is not very effective compared to the amount of time it requires from you.
So, if you find it useful, by all means keep using it, but remember not to fall for its gamification of language learning, and move past it when it stops being beneficial. Ignore the streaks.
In any case, keep in mind that Duolingo is not enough to learn a language, ever.

I’m using Duolingo to dip into the language first, but I really enjoy the typing part of their lessons. It’s difficult in a good way? I feel like I learn more efficiently that way.
Are there any other apps, websites, etc that focus on a typing based learning style of sorts, especially for German? Not sure how to word that right, but I hope it makes sense.

faq how long to learn
According to the U.S. Foreign Service Institute (FSI), a person is estimated to require 750-900 hours of guided learning to reach B2 in German. However, study habits and other factors can drastically affect this estimation. These factors include your native language, previous language learning experience, the methods you use, your discipline and motivation, consistency, grammar, exposure and immersion, and training each ability equally. You can find an overview of these factors on page 3 of >faq best way to learn.
The term "guided learning hours" refers to time spent learning with a more advanced language partner (such as a tutor), while making use of language materials (tools, texts and other resources). Guided learning hours, while very helpful, are not necessarily required to learn German. Many people learn German by self-studying, however, self-study hours are too variable to measure, and are consequently excluded from this definition and estimate.

There are many combinations of activities you can use to study and practice a language. How do you know which combinations are suitable? The key is to make sure you cover each of the main skills with at least one activity. Some activities only train one skills, while some train multiple – either is fine, as long as all the 6 skills are covered somewhere in your studies.
• Reading
• Writing
• Listening
• Speaking
• Grammar
• Vocabulary
It doesn’t really matter which resources you use, as long as you can follow along, and the information is correct and reliable. If you have any doubts about whether a resource is correct, feel free to ask. You do not need to find just one resource and stick to it – in fact, to learn best, it’s recommended that you use a large variety of resources and switch between them when needed.

You can find vocab lists for Levels A and B in the resource list. A grammar list is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Kz1Xqx0sFXAWys-Mgfhjc-M8JDCMtoeeGXcg5-orP_A/edit
German Grammar - Order of Topics A basic list of what order to study grammar topics in, separated by level. This is not the only order you can study in. This is just a simple list people can use if they’re unsure what to study next. I put an asterisk next to topics that aren’t really essential ...
You generally won't be able to find information like this for B2+ because by that point it's too much to put in a list.
It was exactly this!
Thank you so much for helping me 🙂. Let me know if you want to add this to our curated list, in the server, so everyone has access to it, I added another source that I found googling:
https://kapitel-zwei.de/kursinhalte-sprachniveaus/
I think it might be beneficial, but ultimately is up to you guys 🙂

anyone knows an ebook reader for pc with builtin dictionary feature? (that lets you use an english-german dictionary)

Idk who might need this but I've made a mnemonic to remember verbs that use the dative case, it goes
Hot - helfen
dogs - danken
stink - sagen
and - antworten
suck - stehen
nuts - nützen
go- geben, gratulieren, glauben
get - gehören, gefallen, genügen
some - schaden
awesome - applaudieren
readymade - raten
german - gelingen, gehorchen
pepperoni - passen
pizza - passieren
with - wehtun
bagels - begegnen
and - allow (erlauben)
Fanta - fehlen
You'll have to associate 2 or 3 verbs that start with 'g' with the words that start with it cuz there's a lot of them :)
Also remember 'give show trust tell', they also use dative
Anyone know any good exercises for B2 Hören?

Ach ja 'dienen' fehlt es der Liste
I mean it does cover the most important ones, there's gotta be like 50 of them
I dunno, I just kinda brute force memorise most of them which have more than 3 'Worthäufigkeit' gauges in dwds.de
Mnemonics work for me, helps me retrieve stuff from the back of my head :)

Hello, I am looking for B1 Horenprufung practice
Ang recommendations for b1ish level video gamezs? Preferably text based
Do you have any ideas of what kind of games you like?
strategy ig?
or sandbox
id consider minecraft but idk what german servers to join
Oh, well, with Minecraft you can also just turn your language to German. It doesn't really give you full sentences but at least you can learn some vocab from it.
A game that I played a while ago in German was Graveyard Keeper. If you don't know it it's kinda similar to Stardew Valley but with more darker themes or whatever. But something like that is good. Probably Stardew Valley has a German language translation, and you can look into any other similar games of that genre.
Considered stradew calley
but wouldnt it have a lot of names for ingame stuff that i wouldnt know bc i never played it?
I think all games will have that.
fair
but im mostly referring to invented words
Like I was going to say that Sims is also a game with a lot of text but of course it has weird made up stuff as well.
That's what I mean. Most games have made up words.
I've never played it in German but probably yeah.
Disco Elysium is a highly rated game with a really cool language mode... You can select 2 languages and there's a button to switch between them any time during the game. However... it's more like C2 level so maybe not the best choice for B1.
And if you like point and click detective type of games, there are a few of those with German translation. Lacuna is really cool and has good puzzles. There's another one called Darkside Detective and it's more like silly puns and stuff but probably good for language practice.
Sorry, this is quite a random assortment of genres, I just wanted to throw out some ideas because even if these specific games don't fit what you want, maybe it inspires you to think of something.
How can I study for german
anyon e know a mobile ebook reader with useful language learning feature?
i.e cross language dictionary
i was playing sims 3 in german when i was at a lower level, i could write down thousands of words that I never learnt :) now that i am better i am thinking of starting to play sims again.
i am fluent in English, have read tons of books and while playing Disco Elysium i have met tons of new words i have never met before.
I would not advise this game like you said unless you are already fluent or close to fluent. Especially since this game does not have a German voiceover.
I would STRONGLY advise Detroit and the Witchers for german learning.
Just finished German in school. Any tips and resources for how I can continue to learn German by myself? Should I look more into grammatics? Should I read and listen to German? What's the best thing to do if I want to become even better in German?
Go to #botchannel and type >faq best way to learn
Thanks!

@solar coyote
anyone knows a good pc dictionary program with a nice looking ui?
does anyone know where can i watch lectures in german?
Is using duolingo good? I have been for a while
I know some people have opinions on it so yeah
If you're looking for guidance or alternatives, check out >faq beginner in our #botchannel .
Hey chat, is there any way to learn German easily!? Like with App or something similar!?
faq nicos
Nicos Weg is a free online program aimed at helping people learn German. It includes video, audio, text, grammar explanations, notes, vocabulary, and exercises. It also includes very useful cultural and bureaucratic information, such as how to open a bank account, while teaching you the relevant grammar and vocabulary.
It’s fairly popular and well-recommended, but keep in mind that you can’t learn a language with only one resource, even if it’s a good one!
You can find the courses here: https://learngerman.dw.com/en/overview/
You can also see various other courses for learners by dw.com here: https://www.dw.com/en/learn-german/s-2469/

Besides stardew valley, anyone has reccomendations for text based games with a good german translation?
Because of a cyberattack, the second largest regional newspaper in Germany, the "Rheinische Post" ("Rhenian post", moderately conservative with a focus on the Western parts of North-Rhine Westphalia) had to temporarily drop it's paywall for its articles, so for the next few days, the last few months worth of articles are online for free and it's even possible to generate and download local versions of the newspaper as they were delivered: https://news.rp-online.de/
The editions of the last few days are reduced in size because of the aftermath of the attack. They claim they would try to have their regular systems up again till the end of the week.

I don't really think skyrim is text-based but I heard it has good German translation and because of how big and vast the game is, theres a lot for you to absorb
define text based
generally at this point all german translations should be really good. If you're looking for games focused on language, maybe a point and click adventure? Daedalic is a German company, and I really loved Deponia, or Edna & Harvey. Sims was already mentioned. If you like Skyrim, there's a rather popular german RPG series: Gothic 1-3, and Risen 1-3, and Elex 1-2. Tabletop Sim might also be fun and has a lot of German board games.
can pause and read text
Hey can you recommend me German movie
i watched munich the edge of war but thats the only one i think ive watched, its only half in german, i usually only watch shows
resource https://germanlistening.com a really, really awesome resource that allows you to improve listening skills in german by listening and writing (Diktat-style) or reading (like a transcript) the said sentences. it also allows you to create a free account to keep track of completed exercises and time every day. Sorry my bad
See if you can get youtv.de subscription. Some of their content has Close captioning, untertitel, subtitles and some does not, but they have lots of german movies and tv shows. You can even get Alarm Fuer Cobra 11, but that isn't with subtitles of any kind. Vater hoch Vier is a popular German movie series for family. Die Regeln von Floor is a awesome kids show that will be coming up with a new season soon. Its very popular, but its only available during certain months. How they work is you browse for what you want and press record and then it will record it for you. However, to get it with subtitles, you then have to watch it and record it with the subtitles or download it without subtitles. Sometimes I do both so that I can get it with and without.
Anyone know if these books are good?
Ignore the streaks
i don't think that's a good idea like that the best thing about it it forces you to actually do it every day it's very good at forcing you to make language learning a routine
but yeah it's way too slow
There are other apps you can use for that. I don't use any myself, but there a lot of apps designed to help you focus on getting tasks done.
I know Habitica is one.
what's the best dicitonary to download into an e-reader? onyx leaf 2 specifically

hello,
does anyone know a great book that has vocabulary, grammar, and reading materials?
or a list of good videos, websites, etc.?
hello <@&305455824174710787>
there is an outdated link in the resources, in 2.7 Vocabulary section.
freerice link was: https://freerice.com/categories/german
should be: https://play.freerice.com/categories/german
thank you and sorry for the ping.
Thanks. We'll update it soon.
I have used these brands. My book is called "Complete German All-in-One" and is a synthesis of six of the 'Practice Makes Perfect' publications. It seems to me to be quite helpful. The format is clean and the explanations fair. The exercises are the best I have used (with some but limited other experience).
I scanned the entire book (all 633 pages), and have them saved as PDFs to my email. Sadly, the scanning machine sent the PDFs in ~30 page sections. More unfortunate, I am unable to access my e-mail until I repair or replace my phone, which broke today. When I have access to the email, I will share the PDFs-- or PDF if I edit them together into one document.
I know vocabulary

Can you recommend me a book for learning all aspects of German for an absolute beginner for self-study use? I want to give it a try, an ambitious one, cause I'm not yet so serious about it, but I want to take it seriously even if it is for a short period of time.
A good resource for bilinguals is if you're on your phone and you want quick access to special characters such as þ or ß, you can hold down on to the spacebar and add languages "Alphabet" Will add almost all special latin characters

Found this PDF full of speaking prompts (40 pages) for less than 2€. Great if like me, you need more speaking practice and sentence construction practice. I like that it's divided by level so that you can measure where your current ability is at. https://www.deutschesinstitut.it/eng/shop/speaking-german-a2-level/
Is noun town for oculus a good/decent tool for learning german for a beginner

yo anybody tried the Akademie Deutsch A2+ books before?
I have not seen either of these books, But I have other books from Perfect and they are useful.
When I was looking for 2 different Language programs to work with. One was Duolingo, I can use t his anywhere. After alot of YouTube research I settled on Ouino language program. I use this when I want to go deep on something.
As I've brought up in this server before, the latest (3rd) edition of Schenke & Seago's Basic German has a lot of very silly errors
this perhaps being the most outrageous one (page 88, then again on page 90)
3rd but not earlier ones?
Yeah just the third one
it seems to be fine in the 2nd
Okay I'll add a note in the resource list when I update it next.
Btw feel free to ping mods for things like errors or important info about existing resources.
That way we can know about it and fix it.
resource https://www.tandem-gpt.com/
Someone created this nice ChatGPT interface for language learners. You need to choose a level (A1-B2) and you can choose a topic or a situation. The bot will generate Ai based text based on your selections. Your answers will also be grammatically checked (this may not be 100% accurare).
I think it is a good resource to try out your understanding and exercise new learned words.
Thank you, your resource suggestion has been submitted!
Our current stance is that we don't support ChatGPT for language learning.
faq chatgpt
This FAQ explains rules and advice for using text AI tools such as ChatGPT.
- Do not answer any questions by using AI-generated text.
- Do not ask for AI-generated text to be corrected.
-
No fact-checking: Tools like ChatGPT are very good at writing texts and often provide answers that sound good, but they are not capable of fact-checking their own answers.
-
Fake information: It’s very common for these programs to make up fake or incomplete information, which is explained convincingly but is mostly wrong.
-
Non-deterministic: The information is also partially randomly generated, meaning that if you ask the same question multiple times, you will usually end up with different answers.
-
No language knowledge: It shouldn't be used for grammar or vocabulary questions, as it doesn't understand linguistics, nuance, or how a native speaker might actually use a given word or grammar point.
-
Missing context: When correcting texts it needs to understand what the writer was trying to express. As such it may miss mistakes or correct things that don't need to be corrected.
-
It delays the development of important skills in language learning.
Relying too much on AI generated texts or solutions may get in the way of learning the necessary skills of language acquisition, such as how to look up words or phrases in a dictionary, using critical thinking, or actually applying learned concepts. -
AI is not designed to guide learners.
If you ask an AI a question, it will provide you with information, whereas if you ask a human, they will ideally ask you to show your understanding and offer advice on how to find the answer. -
AI output requires scrutiny
AI output must be verified, but beginners to German or to language learning often lack the knowledge or experience to do so.
- Ask ChatGPT to come up with some story ideas that you can write about.
does anybody know an epub resource for german books? and also book recommendation for B2 would be great!
im starting with german so can u send me any good books or anything that can help?
I found that most workbooks made in German are the most accurate for German. It does not teach colloquial German. And you do need to see if the answers are in the back, otherwise, you won't know if you got it right or not. I have some Authentic German resources, but they aren't available right now, but I thought I had that one you mentioned. I prefer the Authentic German workbooks and textbooks once I got to a A2, B1 level, depending on what I'm looking at. I used them to cement what I should already know for A1-A2, and to challenge myself in B1.
The book Modern German, does have good grammar explanation and simple sentences for practice. However, there really isn't a good all in one book with answers for absolute beginners. The Modern German book does have some reading sections as well. Kontakte is another book, but that one is really reading heavy, has some grammar, and is big on communication. The biggest problem is answers are necessary to know what you did right or wrong. Getting the Teachers edition isn't always possible. Personally, I use Mondly and Duolingo so that I can do reverse study when I'm ready. I intend to learn the grammar later, but Duolingo does have grammar, albeit not the best. Mondly is best for reverse study, and Duolingo is best for Free study. Duolingo is what I'd use to get my feet wet and prove commitment. However, these aren't books.
