Funny thing with avatars is you can have layers do different things for specific people
Also, you can use the same parameter to drive animations in many layers, so you could simply add another layer and just drive a new animation with the same parameter
of course, but I don't think that's the goal here, and I didn't want to complicate things

I have a few things with an IsLocal check that splits into two different sections in the one layer

I wanted to ask the pros and cons of using blendshapes to hide and show sections of an avatar by shrinking them vs using UV Tile Discarding?
I want optimization to be a focus, most importantly texture memory. Though doesn't need to be like super super optimized.
@sharp oasis blendshape shrinking is the worst option performance wise, its just allows you to have less mesh renderers.
and the only such option available for quest

Just select that part in the scene and you will see material detail in the inspector.
This might have to do with low PC specs. Do you know the specs of her PC?

Because it's embedded material. Then you have to create new material and assign to the part instead.

Hi, i'm working on some clothes for my avatar, i've seen a lot of people adding clothes on top of their avatar while managing to avoid clipping but wouldn't be easier to delete the parts of the body hidden by the clothes?

you can, but that would be as optimized as just not deleting the underlying body

You could do that a few ways. A separate object is not ideal, since it means extra draw calls and thus inefficient for rendering.

Again, if you don't need the body under, deleting it is best. If you do, you could try shrinking with shape keys, or maybe UV tile discarding.
you absolutely should make an avatar per clothing outfit, don't put everything on one 🙂
uv discard/alpha it out works but if you are waay above limits you better off removing anything under clothing in blender

this one was also uploaded Sunday afternoon
But a more recent one I worked on has the seat location constrained to a physbone and it’s no longer showing collision at all

And then when I modified it, it placed me in the wrong location
I’m guessing they broke something when they tweaked physbones in the recent builds
I should NOT have the same parameter driver on both islocal true and islocal false side for contact reciever dual setups, right?

a synced parameter will be set the same on both sides of the IsLocal check. What you do with that is up to you though

last quick question: regarding particles. I currently have a smoke effect, but if you lean in close, the particles become mini, and if you lean out far (or use the mirror) they become giant.

For some reason my avatar makes my world look too big? My actual height doesn't go towards the vrchat avatar, it doesn't properly fix my view to make it as such even though my View Position is at the face...

It's Min/Max size settings in the renderer module.

Is there no way I can set the size of the particle like normal and have this not affect it?
max particle size 1 I guess?
It's percentage relative to screen height and can be more than 1.
ok as far as I can tell having min 0 and max 1 makes it ignore the viewport and only uses the particle's real size
It doesn't ignore. 1 just means big equal to screen height
so is there no way of having particles that are always the same size? regardless of how close you are to them?

So an int has greater than, equals to, less than, etc. Float only has greater than and less than.
if I have a state with two transitions, one greater than 0.5 and one less than 0.5, and the float is exactly 0.5, will it get stuck?

If your fbx prefab is not unpacked in Unity, you can just overwrite the file and updates will be applied.
As long as it's the same name, don't delete it from the hierarchy and just reimport it

that's a file in the project, unpacking is not a thing for that. It's the prefab object in the hierarchy which can be unpacked.
You should be fine to just put it back in, as long as the name stays the same

Need some help with an odd Local animation issue. So I've been making an animation for drills to spin. The odd part is that on my end the drills are jittering than spinning; but on other peoples ends the animation works perfectly. How do I fix this?

I'd do them in the same layer with the same audio source but use VRC Animator Play Audio to trigger them

The animator trees are identical, the right sound plays but not the left one. All of the settings seem identical
The animator tree shows it's triggering properly, but the sound doesn't play even though the animation is selected and there is a keyframe to enable and play the sound source on awake

any time it says "none" there, click that "x" so it says "default" instead. Or add your own controller.
Also it looks like your avatar isn't humanoid, that's why there's no gesture or additive layer. This is likely not what you want.

Building and testing on android is way too much effort requiring wireless ADB and VRChat on an android mobile device. You’re best off just building and publishing the avatar instead since file sizes aren’t going to be an issue anyway

That material is embedded in your model file, you cannot edit it. You can extract it in the 'Materials' tab in the inspector for the FBX, or just make a new one and drag it into the slot under "Mesh Renderer" in that image ^

I wanted to add a few bones for my avatar (Ear andTail) for physbones
I had a Prefab and luckily there was still a .fbx file of it, so i imported it into blender added some bones put weight on it everything seems to move and work in pose mode.
I exported it and then wanted to put it in unity again.
However i have no idea how to replace it in the already worked on previous Prefab (since i already made animations and everthing, etc). so how do i replace it?

its not really intended
you can't do it at runtime, but at the bottom of the avatar descriptor you can adjust the position of those if you just want the size or position changed, and you can actually relocate them to different bones with a build-time script

I've made an animation that effects the arms - i want it to not track arms (animation effects arms so user cant use them) but maintain the other tracking

can someone please tell me why his foot are under the ground?
So ive ran into an issue for my rig when making it a Humanoid one within Unity, essentially the model no longer is in its T-pose when I turn it into the humanoid one but when having no armature applied then its back in T.
Is your pivot below the feet?

vrchat likes to shove your feet underground (locomotion) , id have it slightly below to avoid it
i noticed that even the eye view point i needed to lower it under the eyes
i thought maybe theres a fix

if you use fbt most people just turn off locomotion so it doesnt do wierd things

Question for anyone who might have had this issue:
I have an avatar that appears to always float off the ground but only in my local view (i.e from my perspective when I look down)
If I view my avatar from say the VRchat camera my avatar appears to be on the ground like normal and I've not had anyone say that my avatar is floating and I appear to be on the ground when looking in mirrors as far as I can tell.
Anyone have any idea what could cause this?
That’s an issue caused by your view position
The farther your view point is forward, the worse that effect gets
common with putting it too far down your muzzle on furries 🙂
Does the problem become worse the futher the viewpoint is from the rig or the avatars center position?
If it's the latter I could probably get away with having the whole model set back a little bit, if it's in relation to the rig then well.. I guess I'll put up with it for now.
If you float when looking down, almost certainly it's the viewpoint.
I'll have to do some tests, see if I can find a middle ground between looking into my chest when looking down and floating.
Gotta love avatars with weird shaped heads and not standard proportioned humanoid rigs

you can hide stuff like the chest fluff, see the VRC Head Chop component.

you can't disable it using toon lit, but you can if you use toon standard iirc

Then yeah, you'd need to set it up at world origin with world constraints then measure the distance using dampening constraints and finally choose your target that way

In your case you can probably do something like that. This will make this receiver get to it's sender but while still having 1% of it's position being dictated by it's parent.

For your use case, have the receiver parented to your avatars and constrained like that to the world origin. That will give each avatar their distance to world origin. Now you're still going to need a lot of math and other tricks to do what you want, but that can be a start. Alternatively you can use https://github.com/VRLabs/Contact-Tracker to attach an object to a player and use it as a target for your receiver's constraint. Lots of options.

In Unity, this is the pose you get when animating, it's normal. But it's fine in most cases, if you're just going to animate the head, then just animate the head and ignore the body.
well the thing is in vrchat on quest, the legs still move up and I cant even crouch
for tracking, i have the hips, feet, and both left and right hands and all fingers checked and for animation i have the head checked, and for the avatar mask I have the head part highlighted green and everything else even the IK dots are red, and in the transform i made sure only the head bone was checked on and everything else was unchecked

Heya! Im having issues with Audio Sources in an Avatar.
Im trying to put a heartbeat onto my model, however when I test it out in vrchat, no one hears it.
IN Unity, when you have the camera near the model, you DO hear it though.
I tried redoing the audio source, implement the VRC Spatial Audio Source, but none of that worked.

In your full-body emote animation you're using VRC animator tracking control to also take control of the eyes, right?

can anyone tell me what setting to use if i want my float animations to snap? for example im animating a blendshape that hides a body part or piece of clothing, and when i use the radial instead of smoothly transitioning between the frames, i want them to more snappy or instantaneous if that makes sense?? and i should note i dont wanna use an animation for each state just one animation that has all the states on it in frames (eg. top & bottom > just top > just bottom > none)
Quick question, I just got a new avatar and some shoes for it as well. I got the avatar itself (mostly) working fine, but the shoes are fairly tall and they clip through the floor in the game. I was wondering if there was a way to adjust my avatars height to properly accomadate for the shoes. Ideally in unity since this is a preset i bought off booth but if i need to pull out blender I can try

my guess is that since they are not from the avatar itself but an add on, i need to shift the hip up to get the base height of the avatar to be slightly taller so that it can properly accommodate the new height gained from the shoes, problem being I have no clue how to do that

Go into the rig configuration of your avatar and raise the armature object till the shoes are properly against the floor
the shoes are a seperate object to the armature, should i move the shoes up to the floor line and then also move the armature up to match it?

Would anyone know why an animation works just fine on a model. Works perfectly when you press play and it plays as it should. But the moment you go in playmode and turn on gesture animator. the thing that was animated just find is stretched out and not where the animation should be?(IE: Misplaced as opposed to before play mode.)
The only difference from the two model is me adding marshmallow and BPPP(Breast physics plus.)
So... I don't have any posotion to fix in the animation, because it plays out just fine out of play mode. Attached to the model and everything.

If it just now happened then it would be because VRC tweaked the server-side security checks to detect various things that previously let you bypass certain restrictions, the one I have heard the most about being putting lights on particles to hide them from the rankings.
It was because of the textures, they were over the limit.

I purchased it about 8 months ago and ever since ive only had problems trying to get it to work. I need a step by step or a guided type of help. Anyone having an issue lately where this crash happens within moments of joining specific worlds? I can join most worlds just fine but some start at an extremely low FPS and eventually crash. I'm currently on the latest Poiyomi Toon, latest SDK,, latest GPU drivers, and latest Windows update.
Thing is I have another avatar also using Poi Toon etc that isn't experiencing either the low FPS or the crash at all. In fact it's butter smooth but once I switch to this specific avatar the FPS tanks and crashes and only in a very small number of very oddly specific worlds. "Sunset Bay" (https://vrchat.com/home/world/wrld_36117d86-d759-4b9c-962e-eb25c8caebdf) is one of the worlds.
I actually rebuilt the entire avatar project to see if I could find any issues but couldn't so I decided to see if anyone else has seen this issue.

Optimizing shouldn't be too difficult.
- VRCFury gives you some things you can do
- Dark avatar optimizer, can merge some meshes and bring stats down
- Drop textures. Your eyes do not need to be 4k. I suggest using something like Thry's performance tools to look at the compression and size of each texture and see how low you can drop it.
This got someone from 320MB to 30MB VRAM, without any visible quality loss.
Those are the easiest things you can do

Hello all! Hope everyone is well.
Not to be too much of a nuisance but I've been trying to set up some functional coat physics for my avatar and struggling a lot with it.
I tried to use physbones at first with the cloth bones being attached to the hip bone, but it seemed like no matter what I tried it would always end up clipping with the legs even with colliders and angle limits in place (I may have been setting it up poorly though since I'm new to it.)
Second attempt was to use a cloth sim on the coat cloth which worked flawlessly, flowing and moving beautifully but as soon as I tried it with my headset on it would stutter terribly, especially when looking down, even with the coat itself turned off.
So if it's not too much to ask, would anyone have any advice on how to set this up well so that it moves at least somewhat flowingly without clipping with my thighs or shins?

So I tried again to get physbones on the whole thing just as a test, and in movement it's like the colliders don't work at all, and the cloth is super jittery no matter what settings I put
colliders go hurgh, too close
I angle limits and weightpaints nearly everything i can , my very old avs can have some colliders but they are ancient 
It seems more like the physics itself is to sensitive, not the colliders, like the cloth is overly reactive
cloth is unreliable cause its all local, people will never see your avatar right its enough to turn around (culled) and back it does something else or get stuck on some collider

you would have a good rated avatar if you did blender first and not all these wierd colliders

recommend this shader , have alot of features for quest and backface culling , no cutout tho and vrm/vroids use it alot

you need cats or its pain to convert, with it just a few clicks
you will get the black alpha parts tho (blender work to knife tool them away) , but least it has culling now
The cars or pain stuff is that separate things I need to install or is it already in blender?

install blender, add cats, install the vrm/matcombiner , import vrm * do stuff * export to unity, then set it up for vrchat

Is anyone else seeing inconsistencies with avatar ratings after the update? I have an avatar that has 2 skinned meshes and one basic mesh, but in the VRC client, it is showing in the ratings 4 skinned and 1 basic mesh.
had it before the update, now they are correct
I disagree. In Blender and Unity, there are only 2 skinned meshes. The avatar rating is showing an incorrect number.
What version for blender can run of any computer the most
3.6 probably lowest id suggest, some scripts arent updated so held me back abit , now switched to 4.5.1 tested the ones i use seems to behave
