Expand the dynamic bones in the copy section and see what it's copying

General question. When you use the Float parameter does it also save the setting you use on the avatar like in the Toggle where you still see the same setting when you re-log in to VRchat?
yes, parameters are saved when you set them to be "saved" in your parameter file. you can do it for int, float and bool

My avatar has 1 single material and has individual controls for shirt emission color, hair color + brightness+ emission toggle, and has seperated emissions on the shirt and other parts
I don't know what's going on with my unity but for some reason I can not update my avatar to quest because it's saying that there is a standard material on the model but I changed everything to the VRChat/Mobile/StandardLite and it still pops up saying there is a standard material

have you checked to make sure that you have all materials extracted from your model, there could be one still in it you haven't changed

okay I somehow fixed it by merging a single vertex and re-exporting. but now the unity FBX is completely missing some vertices... I have never seen such weird ass bugs man..

The best ones are the ones custom made to the proportions of your body so no weird stuff happens

Besides being clunky and a larger filesize, what exactly would make an avatar have bad performance with 2 avatars in one, a toggle to go between the 2 with only one active at a given instance?
In other words what is still being calculated of the model that isnt active
and how impactful are those extra calcs to performance
If it is inactive, the performance impact is small. Probably the transforms get updated

with int you can only toggle 16 objects total, vs 128 with bool, bit of a difference
int is handy if you wanna toggle something and turn off other things same time if they are using the same paramter
(you can toggle alot with int but wont be synched to other that join the room)
guessing that goes for floats too right? and not triggers
int and float are 8 memory , bool are 1 , you can have a total of 128
already changed to bools
yeh if you try to use same float paramter to do stuff its not synched for late joiners into room
But for something like toggling music (more then 8 anyway) any state and int would be the way
0 = music off , 1-255 enable one of these
hey some one knows how to do an animation (if possible) where the model duplicates in the world and has the same movement as you (like the hand for example)
So I added some bones to my armature and changed a blendshape and now my avatar disappeared and the armature isnt updating on the avatar in the scene, I cant seem to figure out if there is a way to refresh the avatar in my scene
If you unpacked the prefab in the scene, then there isn't a way to update the one in the scene, you would need to put the avatar in the scene again

Generally not recommended to unpack prefabs in the scene unless you explicitly need to and understand that it breaks the connection to the file on disk. Avatars shouldn't be most of the time

in vr you can use the camera, otherwise just the avatar selection menu?
I need to view the avatar as I'm using it so the selection menu is not an option. also I'm on desktop (no vr) so I don't think there even is a camera?
The only other option I can think of is find a world that has a third person system. I don't know which ones have them and I don't know how to find them
You can attach a camera prefab to your avatar that will display a front view cutout on your desktop screen, I have a prefab if you'd like it

Anyone know how to redirect my audio to another place, for example on a ragdoll? I've seen it in one animation where you fly upward and voice follows but literally you are still in the same place where the animation starts
so the audio just follows your model? sounds like you'd just need to attach your audio to your model and enable 3D spatial audio
i don't mean audio from an audio source, i meant my voice follows the model for everyone else, like they hear me talking from the model not where i actually am

by default, the voice source should be spatially same as the viewball, unless tampered
I've seen an animation where the model floats upward and the voice source follows that model

anyone else experiencing crashes when testing a custom made avatar? I spend a lot of time changing stuff on my avatar in Unity and testing it in VRChat and the usual process is click Build & Test in the menu, go to vrchat, change to a different avatar and then change to my actual avatar (the one I'm testing). but sometimes when I change to a dummy avatar before changing to my actual avatar the game will crash. not sure why. I thought it might be the avatar but I don't see anything indicating it. sometimes it doesn't crash for a long time but sometimes it'll crash every time I try to test the avatar. this is when I'm changing to the dummy and not my own btw. kinda weird

Well all Quest avatars can be Pc avatars but not all Pc avatars can be Quest avatars. If you design it for Quest from the get go it’ll work for Pc

also do quest users usually keep safety settings performance rating on medium or do they drop it to poor? I wanna convert my pc avatar to quest but it'll end up being Poor performance unless I reduce the polygon count even more which would only mess up the model even more. so is it worth it? or does enough have their performance ranking lowered to Poor?

i have avatars on for all roles but i still have to individually load people's avatars.
it's your safety settings. if you go to the Safety tab you'll see a small tap in the top right corner called Performance Settings or something like that. there you can change the minimum ranking from Medium to Poor or Very Poor. and you can change the max file size an avatar is allowed to have in order for it to show for you (default is 20 MB I think)

I know I can use the animator tracking control in the gesture layer to override my tracking but im unsure how to make it so it freezes my arms in the position they were in, instead of a preset animation

I am quite new to VRChat and wanted to import some models into the game. I am reading the Documentation for the SDK and am trying to understand how it all works, however I am finding myself getting confused and a tiny bit frustrated. If someone could possibly help me get the SDK installed and just run me through how to do an avatar in Unity and then transfer it into the game, that would be wonderful. I know Unity very well so the animation and rigging is not a problem for me.

I've got an issue. a friend asked me to add an animation to their tail. I followed M.o.o.n's tutorial, and this is what i got

Documentation says it should be in the gesture layer with an avatar mask on it because it moves transforms, but FX works too.
Keep that in mind just in case something messes up in the future with an sdk update.

Avatars 3.0 was a lot different when those tutorials were made. I believe MOON made a video discussing that the stuff they learned in the beta is much different than current 3.0.

Not necessarily. 29, 30 and 31 all work with VRChat running on 31 currently.
5.6, 2017 and 2018 avatars all still work in game so there is some compatibility there. In theory if you had the old sdks, 5.6.3p1 would still work. It's more of 'why' than 'could' though.

Depends on the perspective but I feel like it's pretty easy as it is.
Just like learning anything there's a general process that you need to get down. Plus it is game development in a sense. Not really a click one button and everything is fixed thing with how many different variables go into it.
But with tools like Pumkin's Avatar Tools and VRCQuestTools, both of which are free on GitHub, uploading has gotten a lot easier than it once was. Moving more towards that 'click one button and it's done' state
The difficult part is modelling, can take years of experience
But that's why things like ReadyPlayerMe or the other whatchamacallit exist so you don't need to upload yourself

you don't need trusted. I think you can upload content to vrchat after only 15 hours or so. or maybe you need the New User trust rank (first trust rank you can get)
Producing content helps get you trusted (u don't need it to upload content). Once you got the minimum rank to upload content, you can upload a free avatar or two to get your rank boosted a little. It's not a magic bullet tho, it will still take playtime to achieve a high rank.

is there some particular way I can get fingers to be bent or spread apart in different natural states? Like hands closed, peace, etch? Specifically for Index, I mean. Or in general! I dunno, but I use Index.
When I do various gestures, they seem so stiff and flat, meanwhile I see some avatars with really nicely spread out fingers in open-hand position.

There are plenty of tutorials on creating your first vrchat avatar on YouTube. It’s definitely easier to watch those than trying to have one explain every step

basically multiple problems, ran into a mesh problem which i mostly need to merge a hair mesh into the body mesh, the avatar is half way into the ground while testing in VRChat, and now i'm getting this "Humanoid avatar must have head,hands and feet bones mapped." problem
i have 0 knowledge of unity and rigging and uploading vrchat avatars, so this is all new to me.
oh yeah, forgot that the model is basically too small to even see in blender or unity

you need to upload twice, one for pc, one for quest (change the platform to android for this). Just keep in mind there are a lot of restrictions on quest so you might need to make some changes (the PC and quest version can be different so you can keep them separate). Check the official list of restrictions on the vrchat sdk docs

so my avatar has been uploading fine, i step away from the project for a few months only to find i cant update the avatar because it says the foot bones are not specified in the humanoid. i never touched it #1, #2 i go to the humanoid and the feet are there, #3 i set it back to generic, then reset up the humanoid and i get the same error, i tried clicking reimport on the FBX none of that seemed to fix it. is it a known bug for this to appear out of nowhere?! help!!

I’m not so sure about that. As you can still use models that were uploaded in 2018 or earlier which have never been updated, as long as you have an sdk that works you could still create and upload functional models in any of the previously used versions.

There apparently are some weird random unity versions that let you upload and the content actually gets into the game

Afaik they’re just the previous versions vrc used. They can’t ditch them else they’d be cutting out a bunch of creations that people won’t be able to get back.

Ah you're right, even 2020 has it still. It was fixed in 2021.2.0a17 so hopefully they might implement this fix to a 2019.4.32 soon?

I guess it is a little out there that you can upload images in every other channel in Udon, Avatars, Worlds, Development, Oculus Quest, Media and Other but not this one or the 2 General channels.

To test Audiolink live in the editor for avatars you only import Audiolink into the project. Don't import Udonsharp or Udon.

the VRChat shaders work fine if you want your avatar to look the same between PC and Quest since you can't use anything other than the VRChat shaders for Quest avatars, but you can't do transparency

can anyone help me figure out why one set of emotes work fine, being params "VRCEmote = 1, 2, 3, & 4" but the other set doesn't work with params "VRCEmote = 101, 102, 103, 104". As far as I know, they're being called properly with a sub-menu with 4 selections, all toggles for 101, 102, 103, and 104, with their cooresponding animations.

if you're wondering the reason why custom shaders are not allowed is basically the quest to is a daily mobile phone so it's much easier to cause it to lag with custom shaders and there's some type of Shader effects that don't even run on Android

You can use a series of rotation constraints
hey um just to be sure the Avatar Parameter Driver can't change the default parameters like VelocityX, etc? it seems that the wiki says you can only change user defined parameters
Those default parameters should be driven by other things, so even if you were able to set it it would be instantly reset by your actual velocity or the like
hmm alright. I mean yea it makes sense. velocity variables would really just be read only and not some you can write to. it's just that the default locomotion has an issue that if you jump and press W to try and move forward it will glitch out and the velocityZ variable will switch between 0 and 0.03 making the animation jitter. I was hoping I could set them for an easy fix but I think I'll just go with my secondary fix where I have an animation state with the blend tree and one with only the animation
Velocity stuff is really unstable, especially when you compare what you see locally and what others see over the network. I would recommend some kind of buffer system so that the animation only plays when its a large enough number for a long enough time
Personally I've just avoided using velocity parameters, but then again I dont do much locomotion stuff as its all procedurally done on my avatars
it's the default locomotion base layer for the Prone blend tree that uses the velocity variables so it's not that I'm doing anything specific. it's a bit annoying that my setup won't work well for having multiple prone animations but I'll figure something out

eh one setting to rule em all?, dont really work that way , heavy depends on the weightpainting/poly , what i do is go into play mode wobble avatar around and mess with the sliders until its 'okey' , then copy and paste it after, (sometime just put a dance on avatar so it wobbles on its own)

I've tried watching some tutorials but the process doesn't really seem to line up with the files that i have. its an interesting file tree but its not necessarily one id call unusual, it just has a lotof folders, more than id use, and of course has way more materials than it probably actually needs among other assets that can be combined and optimized down.
worry about optimization eventually, but not right now if you need to understand unity first. in fact if i were you id try uploading a very simple avatar first in order to understand how unity works and how it works with the VRC SDK, one that isnt this one
and where's comes to worse folks will just see your fallback Avatar until you figure out Avatar optimizing stuff
for understanding unity, and avatars specifically, you need to know that all avatars in the end consist only of model files, material files, texture files, and animation files. also audio, but that is self explanatory, completely extra, and not that important.
model files consist of the actual 3d model or mesh(es) that make up your avatar. avatars have extra data on top of just its mesh - they also have bones or an Armature, a skeleton which tells an avatar how it moves. they also have shape keys, animations created by directly changing a mesh's shape, which lets you have lip-synced mouth movements and blinking animations. (common extensions for model files .fbx, .obj)
in order to give your model color and lighting information, a material or several materials must be applied to its mesh(es). you can give materials textures or image files (.png, .jpg, etc.) in order to influence how they look.
vrchat avatars specifically are driven almost entirely by animation files. there are animation controllers which have state machines, which are glorified flowcharts that describe how an avatar is supposed to move. the points on this flow chart are .anim files which, you know, move your avatar.
you first need to set up your avatar so that way it looks right by making sure that your model files have working materials. as for turning it into a vrchat avatar, you need a VRC Avatar Descriptor component on the avatar which allows you to configure it for final uploading.
since you bought this avatar, all of the work should have already been done for you. i would look in the Models folder near the bottom of the >Anone or >Anone_Street folder tree, there should be something in there called a Prefab or Prefab Asset. drag it into the Hierarchy window and it should show up in your scene as a complete, working avatar
from there you just need to log in to the VRC SDK and upload it
if you want to make further edits, i would highly reccommend watching Sippbox's VRC avatar tutorials if you havent already
all of them are really easy to parse and get straight to the goddamn point
Thanks. I do have some more simple avatars I can play with for learning with. With this one in particular though, i think i found the prefab file but like none of the animations were linked and was just having a bunch of small issues like clothes clipping, and the emote animations werent linked right, i could only get walking animation going forward but not backwards, etc.

Pipeline Manager is disconnected, and also already tried restarting unity. Updating existing avatars works aswell

Okay what, it was caused by not having something in the description. Since when do I have to fill that out? Normally it got autofilled with the avatars name if I recall correctly.

Just tried with blank description, current sdk allows uploading without a description, but not a blank name, but it will finish with both an error and a success box, with the error in console saying you need a description. Definitely a bug that needs to be reported if not already
Yep, had the same issue. Interestingly enough, I didn't have this issue with in the same Unity project and a new avatar aswell a couple days ago. Must be something on the backend
i think people miss the error when they go out of build phase, while their unity console has 'clear on build' and 'clear on play' enabled

Heya, I run fbt and notice that my movements are significantly "smoothed out" when I see myself on a video recording from another players point of view. Is this a kind of setting or is fbt motion smoothing just a built in part of vrchat?
It was kinda a strange sensation seeing myself on video because I knew that I did move a whole lot less fluent and more pronounced than what is actually being shown to other players.
On one side its good that I dont look as janky, but a lot of my small expressive movements gets reduced a lot and some doesnt even end up showing to others.
built-in part of VRChat, you do need to be slow and deliberate with your movements, especially with something fast like dancing. here's a good example of the networked IK:

This sounds like you have something preventing the SDK from compiling. Check the Console Log for errors, fix whatever is causing the issue. You also need to be using Unity 2019.4.31 for the current SDK, it does not work in 2018, and even if it works in 2020 or 2021, you won't be able to use the avatars uploaded

Do not reuse the project you have now, it will include things that cannot load in Unity 2019 and will just be a giant headache to even begin to fix it.
When doing avatar expressions what do people generally prefer on a toggle in a emotes menu or on a controller trigger?
I personally think emotes is better that way I can see what the emote is without having to look in a mirror but since it's going on a semi-public avatar I thought I'd ask the community
I prefer facial expressions on gestures so they can be accessed quickly in the moment and used while moving and turning. If they're in the menu, you have to fumble through the menu on one of your controllers. Emotes like dances or anything you would want to toggle on/off are best in the menu. Just my preference though, not sure what others prefer.

Sure if you put it on and keep it on, but the process of going into the menu and selecting one with a stick locks down one of your controller's analog sticks for that period of time
And generally I wouldn't just toggle on an expression for an extended period
I have a similar mindset. Running facial expressions on gestures feels more natural but if you still want options in the menu you could try the 2 axis puppet controller facial moods. Have it set between happy, sad, angry and another. Perhaps this can give a wider range of expressions.

That is the biggest downside of having them on gestures, but I personally, and I think most people, mostly use just a few avatars - so you can learn them, and then you've got the ability to quickly be expressive without having to think about it or fumble with anything. I get that some people don't like having to learn them, though, so it's a matter of what is a priority for each person

The combination of having to remember what each Index gesture shape is and what it does has made it pretty difficult for me nowadays

Not a facial expression but I also see people using "Rock'N Roll" to flip people off so I presume an angry face could go with that
I personally would make it a toggle between that and normal "Rock'N Roll" or Y for ASL
if it's a public avatar as not everyone wants to flip people off and some people sign so

so for example i toggle a gameobject on like a pair of catpaws and want the handgestures to be disabled that they dont clip through the paws

I’ve always just added all my outfits to a single model and set up the logic so it’s impossible for more than 1 outfit to be active. Though this will show as being Very Poor, each outfit + body individually can still preform as Good/Medium. What you need to consider is all the textures it’s loading for each different outfit’s material and how they affect people. Atlasing your outfit textures without merging the materials is still helpful as you’re reducing the number of texture it needs to load. Basically 1 file is better than 4 files.
You can still upload another version with only 1 outfit present for the Good/Medium rating for events and the such. Though the main may perform well there’s no way for the game/others to know.

Blender removes all my vertex groups for any bone missing in the armature linked to my mesh. Is there any way to retain these vertex groups or export them without the need for the armature?

A single animation can do as many actions as you want
So you can just have an animation disable the objects
You can't use wildcards in animations. They must be absolute paths

It's done on purpose. If you have two objects both named "My Object" in a slightly different path, say Armature/Hips/Spine and the other at Armature/Hips, how would the animation tell which one to animate if you use Armature/*/My Object?

When i click edit on the View position, the gizmo for it is completely gone. All i see is the gizmo for the entire model. Is this a known issue? i can't set up my view properly cause of it.
If you are in Unity 2019, and using the dark theme, make sure that the gizmos button is LIGHT GREY, not DARK GREY colored.

Anyone by chance know of a shader that makes the capsule around avatars visible?
I'm pretty sure that's not part of the avatar, but part of the world/game itself, you'd have to create a capsule shaped mesh, apply a vrchat/mobile/particle/additive shader, which will make it translucent, and then add light, and tada you have a pseudo capsule

trying to make an button that plays 5 frames of an animation when it is pressed, then when it’s pressed again it does the next 5 frames
could attempt something with motion time to set the speed of the animation on button press
but maybe it would be easier to split/duplicate the animation states and use transitions as a buffer

If i have 2-3 very different clothing options that only share the same head, armature, and animation, does it make sense to upload it all to the same model or does it keep poly count low to separate it?
If you find your avatar has way to many clothing items for one avatar you should probably seperate them into a few avatars but you dont have to

the Vrcsdk counts the tris as if everything was enabled, but ingame the meshs will only hurt ur performance if they sre enabled

If its pc you can have up to 70k and still be good, long as you dont overdo material/dyn bones/ect
having a problem trying to upload a booth model. I just get a "FileNotFound" error for a missing prefab of the model itself then it goes on to duplicate itself in the assets folder

Usually you want to spend time making sure things work before you upload something, unless you really don't care, so a "mass" upload seems like you are just throwing them up in a "they work kind of" way
Well most of it is just replacing textures since there’s only a handful of different models for the characters
There are also probably at least 100 other people who have uploaded in total all of the animals from ACNH so seems a little redundant. If you plan to use them or set up a world, once you can, for them, could be a worthwhile endeavor though

nah i just meant that the skinned mesh renderer was aligned like this in the case i had, they would be stuck in a different pose than the body, similar to the vid at the linked position
but i no longer have the problem anyway.
i wish unity would give you more tools to move skinned mesh renderers from model to model and such
