Step 1: Sanity Checks
VRChat on Quest Problems
Almost all problems on the Quest version of VRChat can be solved by uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
The most common problem on the Quest version of VRChat is running out of memory, which causes crashes. This happens very often on the Quest 2, which has a limited amount of RAM. (Sidenote: Storage space is not memory!)
Showing or wearing Very Poor avatars and visiting some worlds will quickly run you out of memory. Avoid showing or wearing Very Poor avatars.
Wearing Very Poor avatars, in particular, can be especially detrimental to performance.
VRChat on PC Problems
Please make sure your OS and your drivers are up to date.
We only support Windows 10 and Windows 11. We cannot support preview, beta, or pirated versions of Windows.
VRChat on Linux is officially supported on the Steam Deck. Any popular Linux distribution should work with Proton Experimental, but is not officially supported. For video players to work, you need to run this command: steam-runtime steam://unlockh264/
VRChat running in a VM is not officially supported, although some configurations may work. We cannot guarantee or offer assistance for users trying to use VRChat in a VM. Check our docs: https://docs.vrchat.com/docs/using-vrchat-in-a-virtual-machine
We do not support the SteamVR Beta, although it usually works fine.
Networking Problems
Please uninstall any "network optimization" software like "Killer Network Manager".
If you use full body tracking and use wifi to connect to the internet, but you lose internet when you use VRChat, you need to upgrade your router or use an ethernet cable to connect your PC. FBT dongles interfere with older (2.4GHz) wifi signals.
If your ISP is Charter and you use/rent their router/modem, you may need to configure their IPv6 firewall to allow VRChat notifications through, or disable the IPv6 firewall completely (although we don't recommend this!). Alternately, you could replace the ISP hardware, as its firewall has a bug that makes it block our notification system!
