Switching engines is a very big ordeal it be easier just to make VRC 2 at that point plus they'd be basically throwing out every single piece of user generated content ever made which is basically the entire game

Both do the same thing; however, you get more options and more intuitive ability to navigate your PC from VD.

That wouldn't help, it isn't a matter of engines, textures aren't going to be smaller just because VRChat used unreal, they are still constrained by the fact that the Q2 only has 6GB RAM/VRAM (4GB available for VRC) and Q3 and Q3s only has 8GB RAM/VRAM (6GB available), on PC we have separate VRAM and RAM and I run into issues with a combined 40GB (32GB RAM + 8GB VRAM).

the quest headsets are incredibly CPU Limited and it's already using up most of the audio channels available handling the Avatar voices

There was the short time before personal mirrors came to both PC and Quest where avatars on Quest did have sound, but it got patched out. Audio does take up space, and the limited download size of 10mb, it wouldn't be feasible to have ot included. Add the avatar as a world asset, then add then sound to the world asset, and hear the belly rub sounds.

My 1st 3 months were on Quest 2, and I enjoyed every minute of it in 2021. Perf Blocked bots, people changing from one PC avi to another PC avi, only for the fallback to change size, lags, crashes (not really), the very poor avis that were stuff full of great things.

PCVR is definitely worth it, but that doesn't mean that Quest only users have to settle for less in big amounts. Phone users are introduced to a water downed version of the Quest, or the new iOs version. But others are having fun playing it. I play with my very poor avi on mobile though I only see my fallback. But I get to see the avi from my friends' stream while I'm not home.

This is why I still push for the return of the very poor on mobile for just the user.

I was on Quest and mobile tonight myself. Moderating a group instance on Quest while others are bots ( which I do for PC too), and had fun.

i am mac and have to use shadow for pcvr (power plan). the gpu is server farm grade, the ones we use to render vfx in movies. so there is a price tag on that. i have a love/hate relationship with them though. the system is great if you have the bandwidth. support sucks and everything is always unsupported (example: they refuse to support the quest 3 or 3s and only support the quest 2, they refuse to support windows 11, only 10. refuse to support virtual desktop, only their clunky sideloaded app). virtual desktop and quest 3 and windows 11 all work fine, they just refuse to support anything that isn’t outdated. so be prepared if you go this route.

Worlds are, for the most part, open to anyone at any time. For roleplay groups, like you just mentioned, they often have their own VRC group you can join and a Discord for their communities. For Sunset Bar, they host their own group public instances and broadcast when they do so to people in their group.

It's true some videos from YouTube were/still aren't working because of some backend stuff on some video players, but generally, depending on the type of video player you can paste the direct link to the video and it'll work. So long as everyone has untrusted URLs on. A lot of the problems come from not pasting the link correctly or using the wrong link.

Not sure if right channel but just tried the 3S (boss ordered one and it arrived 2 days early)

Had a play with it after we closed the shop , Basically a quest 2 , headstrap it comes with still sucks balls , slightly better fov with my IPD (middle setting) the passthrough/mixed is nice though. Personally I wouldn't upgrade from my quest 2 due to it not having a headphone jack (I use a vive deluxe audio headstrap with mine)and the optics not being a major difference. I was unable to test the performance difference as he only had beatsaber installed as he recieved it last night. I use my quest 2 for pcvr but thought I'd share my thoughts incase anyone is thinking of pulling the trigger on one.

In terms of head strap it was above my ears and made it hurt my cheeks a little bit. I wouldn't say I have a big or a small head. But that's always the first thing people change

they should be applauded for doing what they did. from this point forward all quest releases will have the exact same hardware specs with exception to the lenses so that developers can release games that will run on the lower end and still have the ability to take advantage of the higher end. quest 3 could not have quest 3 powered games because of the quest 2. this all ends as of this month. this is not something to squawk at.

so in two years when the quest 4 comes out the only difference between them will be: 4s: fresnel lenses, 4: pancake lenses, 4 pro: pancake lenses + eye tracking + more ram. now it all plays equally for developers

That's exactly correct, aside from the lenses. The pancake lenses of the 3 give you a better sweet spot than the Fresnel lenses of the 2. As for the weight, even though the 3 is slightly heavier, it's balanced much better.

At the end of the day, the overall performance is determined by your pc, the headset is only a viewing device at that point.

Well, as I've said, all the processing is done by your PC, which is why it's still a valid option to use discontinued headsets like the Rift S and the Quest 1 on PCVR. It doesn't matter as much. Of course, there are going to be changes in quality, but PCVR will always be better than standalone. So many more pretty things to look at!

avatars in game have a performance rating from Excellent to Very Poor. avatars that are Poor performance or Very Poor performance will be blocked and replaced with pixelated/impostor versions or a fallback. this also happens if an avatar is only compatible with pc. you can tap show avatar like the message below showed to show them anyways, but be careful as too many of these avatars could crash or lag your game.

Probably the biggest let down from switching from desktop to QuestVR was going to the FBT server and realizing most people are PCVR players so their cool/sexy high res avatars only displayed fallbacks. It was odd seeing a banana getting a poll/lap dance from an alien. I'll have to save up for a better rig next year. At least I can swap between the two.

Quest 3 isnt a full blown PCVR its a standalone that can turn into PCVR but the usual brands tend to be VIVE or Pico (oculus/meta is more aimed towards standalone lately but they've got some older PCVR headsets aswell not sure if they're supported anymore though)

yes its just as good as a PCVR hardware wise but standalones have issues of their own (require battery charge,more issues with port damage/problems, higher repair cost in some cases, less support lifetime then full blown PCVR headsets) so suggesting it over an actual PCVR when someone's looking for specifically a PCVR isnt that great to do (especially when its adding on risks that can sometimes outweigh the price difference for non-VR enthusiasts)

suggesting a headset meant strictly for PC is just better as its kinda what they were asking about

I don't agree with those points, though. But you're free to make your recommendations, as much as I am mine. It's up to them to do their own research. With proper cables, my Quest 3 has never run into battery issues; I can play for about 6 hours before it even drops below 95%, and the headset itself costs less than the value to repair some older PCVR headsets. Everything has its pros and cons, so thank you for stating so, but also make sure that unless you're recommending a PCVR system that is twice the price of a Quest 3, you're also recommending outdated tech. Also, saying that the Quest 3 has a shorter support lifetime doesn't make much sense either, since it comes down to other factors as well.

I think I have one of these! Or a similar design. I LOVE it because I always super hated the itchy stuff underneath. So much so that I bit it when I first got it so it didn't touch my cheek. IMU-based tracking (the likes of Mocopi, SlimeVR, Haritora, etc.) is the cheapest and capable of standalone use, but it is susceptible to constant drift and needs constant recalibration. Base station-based tracking remains the most accurate and reliable (but expensive) option.

If I would make a recommendation, look into Ultimate Trackers. They are cheaper than base station tracking, offer near parity, can be set up standalone like IMUs, but have more reliable tracking because they are camera-based. The main drawback is that they need light to track, like your Quest controllers. IMUs and base stations do not need light.

They are also middle-of-the-road in price, typically.

How I've seen it described is as building in one of those IR projectors you can buy for the Quests, which can allow you to play in the dark.

And it is because standalone headsets don't have much memory, the Quest 2 has 6GB of total RAM, but VRChat can only use 4GB (Quest OS takes up 2GB), that has to fit the base VRChat stuff (game logic, ui and etc), the world you are in and every avatar shown. (the Quest's GPU memory comes in there too, but not sure if it is in the 4GB portion or the 2GB portion).

Since the Quest 2 still has a sizeable market share and is severely memory constrained, it is what everything has to be balanced around, but even the Quest 3 and 3s's 8GB isn't really enough, us PC users use in the tens of GB.

it can, but there isn't a way to just "know" what is going to compress better. it depends on how it sees the patterns in the file, some patterns compress better than others. some compress better with RAR. compression should not really have been a restriction, the uncompressed size limit was already there. that one is in your control.

you can also use high compression which will compress even more patterns/passes. it does take longer to compress or uncompress, but it can result in smaller zip files. sometimes it doesn't make any diffence in size with high compression though. it's all a pattern thing.

Yes, my Quest versions don't look as good as on PC even with the same standard shaders, but just using ASTC 6x6 (or 8x8 if that doesn't work) has made it so I haven't run into any size issues for a while, haven't even seen the error in a while, my avis are pretty simple though. but vrchat doesnt want to actually pick them up

reinstalling vrc doesnt do it

there are only 32 audio sources in a world (unity). a world may have a few for ambient sound, it may have video, a pool table. if avatars have sound then there is no sound left for all the users to talk. easiest method to resolve this is to eliminate avatar audio

why do very detailed avatars look pixely when I go up close to them on my meta quest 3s

Because you are probably looking at the avatar's imposter, a cheap imitation of the actual avatar used when the actual avatar is hidden, most Quest avatars are ranked very poor (performance wise) so need to be manually shown, avatars that are "poor" are by default hidden, but you can change the minimum shown rank to automatically show those.

Oh, interesting, they updated it to include IOS.

And yes, this is something they are thinking about and that warning has been there for probably more than 1-2 years now.

And it is because very poor avis are a core reason why the mobile platforms run as badly as they do.

Assuming it actually happens, then I doubt that all they'll do is remove very poor, I am guessing they'll make some changes to the performance rankings as well.

Another reason for the warning is likely just as deterrent, since people don't seem to care about optimization for the performance reasons, give them another reason, the threat of their avatars stopping to work.
