not quite the same thing but I ended up learning blender as a previous social world I was in before VR chat I tried to bring in some models I made in SketchUp and they didn't render correctly at all so I had to fix the models in blender

Oh absolutely. I hit the max file size like twice ever and that was because I put a 200+mb Hatsune miku dance on the avatar
Like nowadays it’s so easy to compress textures down to excellent or good just because of ASTC compression

Channel-packing 4 channels into one texture allows all of those maps to look better than if they were each handled as DXT1, for half the video memory, and only one sample. But VRC has harsh limits on what shaders are permitted for Quest, so a lot of these very basic game dev tricks to optimize can't be used.

I also recently found out fallback shaders for avatars require a specific naming convention and independent texture maps for everything that isn't channel-packed. And I can't find any options to make a custom fallback shader under the requirements. So the technique, while essential for gamedev, and can be useful for worlds, can't be used on avatars, where it would absolutely be the most useful. Metallic, smoothness, AO, and masks/emission lines could all be driven by a single texture.

There were some hard requirements from what I understand. Like putting this info in alpha of another, and only one channel could be used at a time. It also demands the normals be in a standalone texture, even though only 2 channels are needed. And colors also need a full RGB texture, no reconstruction allowed. Not only that, but BC4 reads as red, not gray. So the option for high quality grayscale anything is tossed out the window.

Bottom line:
- You can do anything in a custom shader, and in worlds, with tools like Amplify (YAY!). I highly recommend everyone include shader-making as part of their process. Poiyomi and other shaders have many options to channel pack, but on a fundamental level the best way to optimize is to make shaders specific to your needs, using only the channels and features you need, at the quality you need, with vertex colors, mirroring, etc. all used to drive up quality and file sizes down. Anything short of custom shaders will hinder your ability to optimize.
- For Avatars, every map needs to be independent and named after the same texture slots to be compatible with fallback shaders. Otherwise, your fallback shader will be all white for anyone refusing to show your shader. I'm thinking on sticking with the all white look to force people to show my shaders to get the correct, optimized appearance.
The Standard shader has harsh limitations preventing many of these methods from being used, but it does allow certain optimizations:
- ✅ Smoothness channel can be derived from either Metallic alpha or Albedo alpha. However...
- ❌ DOES NOT support BC4 optimization for Occlusion, Height, Masks, Metallic, or anything that only requires a single channel. All of these need full-blown RGB textures for each channel at BC7 for appropriate quality, which requires double the texture size, and looks much worse.
- ❌DOES NOT support RGB/HSV reconstruction. If you want two colors, you have to use 3 channels on a single texture. There's no way around this.
- ✅ DOES support BC5 optimization for Normal Maps. Doesn't improve file size, but does improve quality dramatically.
- ✅ DOES support UV set 0 and 1 for tiling normals/detail maps. First set can be a trim sheet, second can be more even UVs.
- 🔶 DOES support custom tiling in X and Y directions to allow mirrored textures, but DOES NOT unmirror normal maps or permit multiple tilings.
- ❌ DOES NOT support vertex colors for anything.

Today I met someone who is sensitive to a lot of visual lighting effects, many of which are used in VRChat. They can't go to most worlds anymore, including all popular public hangout worlds because of this.
Before EAC, they used mods to disable these lighting effects so they could go to any world they wanted.
Could options to achieve this be implemented in VRChat? It was honestly really sad to hear how this person used to like exploring VRC and meeting new people and is now stuck in a select few worlds that don't have many visitors.

Question about quest, merged my oculus account to VRC. Is there a way to block or disable the headset from being able to use the oculus log in feature that doesn't require me to log in? Let my nephews play VR while they were here and they just logged right in to VRC.
