Yeah, that's the same thing. The black squares are just one type of symptom, it might show up as something else. Transparency isn't permitted on avatars on Quest.

There are two kinds of error messages:

1. If the error message says that the instance is out of date the people in the instance aren't up to date.
2. If the error message says that your client is out of date then you are the one not up to date.

You don't need to switch of open beta, it's up to date with live!

To force update your client on Steam you can:

• restart Steam OR
• Verify the game files by: right clicking on VRChat > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files

To update on Quest: (I'm unaware of a way to force it directly)

• exit VRChat
• open the Store page of VRChat and see if you can update it
• if that doesn't help try restarting your quest

I can tell you that unless you're getting it for free, the headset you should avoid like it's actually going to kill you is the HTC Vive Cosmos. (Non-elite version)
I had one as my first headset and it's not fun to use, as the tracking is purely camera based you gotta set up definite items and patterns in your space for the thing to not lose tracking and the headset also just sucks in general even it it did work properly due to the fact that the headset relies on lights within the visible spectrum to work, so you can't play in the dark or in the bright.
